also on my last about Toph becoming a cop, pretty sure she was the one who created the police force right? So there’s also an argument to be made that because there probably were not police forces in the past Toph just wouldn’t have the knowledge of how corrupts the police force becomes when she made it. I’d get the “Toph becoming a cop is ooc” if the police force already existed and Toph just joined them, I’d get that point way more. But they didn’t and she was the one who made them.

and with that in mind, I think it’s perfectly in character for her! She wants to beat up bad guys, protect people, of course she’d create a force that can do that. She couldn’t have known how corrupt it would become because there wasn’t any police force in the past to look back to and see how they did.

(Again I don’t like cops, please do not misconstrue this as me defending irl cops—)

(Idk if you’ve seen it but I know you’ve seen ATLA so if you haven’t seen TLOK yet then let’s hear what you think about Uncle Iroh)

I have seen both series, so now you get to hear me rant about two fictional characters! Lucky you!

KORRA ( THE LEGEND OF KORRA )

First impression:

Pretty girl. Muscles. Short hair. Queer.

Need I say more?

Impression now:

I love how much Korra grew throughout the series.

I’m sure many many Tumblr folks have expended on it in proper essays, but it’s refreshing to see that the writing team approached her as they would any protagonist, instead of treating her differently because of her gender ( which makes sense, in a world where cool warrior ladies like Kyoshi have been a thing since the beginning of time ) !

Favorite moment:

No surprise here, I’m going to say the ending. I knew about it beforehand and it is the reason I started watching the series in the first place.

Idea for a story:

I’d love to see more content about Baby Korra discovering her powers and her parents absolutely F R E A K I N G O U T about it! What little we saw of her at that age was so cute.

Unpopular opinion:

Not sure if this is an “unpopular” opinion, but the relationships between the Main Four were the weakest point of the show in my opinion.

I was extremely annoyed by the whole love triangle debacle, and even Korrasami felt a bit underdeveloped ( There were HUGE instances of flirting between the two in S1, and then they kinda… Paused… Until halfway through S4? ). That one is understandable, though - we all know the challenges of trying to sneak a queer storyline into a kids’ show.

Overall, I didn’t get the “found family” feel that made ATLA so great from Korra and the gang. I’ve heard good things about the comics, though, so I might get my hands on them someday!

Favorite relationship:

Despite what I just said, it is Korrasami, 100%.

I like that they didn’t let the love triangle ruin their friendship ( any negative feelings they had were directed either at Makko or themselves, rather than each other ) and how well they work together despite being so different.

And Korrasami did so much for queer representation in general. It might not seem like much when we look back on it now, but these girls really kicked the portal door open for all of the great stuff we’re getting today!

Favorite headcanon:

Many people have created great art of Korrasami getting engaged using a Water Tribe betrothal necklace. I especially love scenarii in which Asami is the one to propose ( engaging in your partner’s cultural traditions because it’s important to them is a huge pro-gamer move in my book ) .

IROH ( AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER )

First impression:

A funny old man who might or might not be sabotaging Zuko’s efforts to find the Avatar on purpose. For his own good, of course.

Impression now:

A much more complex character than I originally expected. He’s great, obviously, but also imperfect, and I love him for that. More on that later.

Favorite moment:

Probably not a surprise either: the reunion with Zuko in the White Lotus camp. Cleared my skin and watered my crops.

Idea for a story:

I’d like to see more fluff of Iroh in his later years, when he can reflect on how much Zuko has grown throughout the years. Maybe play with Izumi as well! Intimate character pieces are my favourite type of fics to read and write.

Unpopular opinion:

He’s not as perfect as the fandom makes him out to be… And that’s a good thing, actually!

I especially think he could have done more to protect the kids from Ozai ( we see him look away when Ozai burns Zuko’s face, and his whole attitude towards Azula, A LITERAL KID, makes me uneasy ). The complexity only makes him more compelling though, and I think we could all benefit from recognising that even good people make mistakes sometimes.

Favorite relationship:

Iroh and Zuko, obviously. I absolutely ADORE the adoptive father figure / troubled kid working through his trauma dynamic ( something something Professor Layton, something something Hershel and Clive ).

Favorite headcanon:

I really hope he got to meet Baby Iroh and understand how much of an impact he truly had on Zuko’s, and probably Izumi’s, lives.

I could also see him b*tching about his nephew with Mai over tea. If they can’t embarrass him a little, what’s the point?

I love the legend of korra ofc like I enjoyed it and I love it but it makes me real sad and upset to think about that avatar cycle shit. like is that for real . is that forever. that connection was such an integral thematic piece of the entire story and it was such an insane plot device to use just built right into the heart of the story and everything and it fucks me up realbad that they threw that away. I am not a huge fan of stories told on tv just because the medium doesn't seem very optimized to me, but that device is one of the most efficient and dramatic I've ever seen, and the implication is that it is gone. and also now there is so much history that is so much harder to reach!! and I know the avatars spirits live in the spirit world and it was the inherent internal connection got severed not the previous lives themselves but the way it was before was just so much more unique. going to the spirit world to talk to a past life is a thing that could happen in any fantasy story like this; the personal connection to over a thousand of them was the kicker for this world and what made it so interesting and the avatar so culturally and politically powerful, and I feel like cutting those off is just shooting yourself in the foot so badly

hot take about adult Toph in legend of korra?

I don’t think her becoming a cop was a bad writing decision. Now put your pitchforks down, I do not like irl cops at all. I just think Toph becoming a cop is a good writing decision if you look at it in the right direction.

yes Toph is rule-breaking little shit gremlin who likes to cause trouble so at the surface her being a cop makes no sense. But walk with me here and consider the fact that that rule-breaking Toph we knew in ATLA was Toph when she was twelve. The Toph we see in lok being a cop is clearly an adult, I don’t think they ever specified how old she was but I’m guessing around 20-30 years old. People and the way they think and act are going to change from when they were a preteen to being an adult. So her developing from being a preteen who hates authority to becoming the authority as an adult does at least make sense when you look at it that way.

not only that, but Toph is clearly the type of character who loves to beat up a bad guys. That isn’t a bad thing that’s just…who she is. So when she gets older and is able to get more authority to beat up bad guys of course she would take it.

there’s also the possibility that when creating the police force Toph was most likely a young adult, Toph could’ve easily just been unaware of how much of a bad idea she was making. Like Toph could’ve naively thought that her creating a police force would help people instead of becoming corrupt. There’s also just the irony where characters end up becoming the things they hate in order to reach their respectable goals. So there’s that. Also like, I’m pretty sure Toph ended up retiring and basically becoming a hermit so there’s that lol. Not really important to this but I just wanna mention it cause it think it’s fun lol.

like again, I don’t like cops irl. Please do not misconstrue this as me defending cops, they deserve every bit of disdain they get. It’s just that imo in the writing sense, I don’t think Toph becoming a cop is totally ooc. Morally? Pretty bad. Writing wise? A little complicated.

there’s also a conversation that could be made about how at some point we kinda gotta start separating the way certain things work in fiction vs the way said things work irl from each other and that when said things show up in fiction it can but will not always be some sort of mirror of reality but I don’t feel scholarly enough to get into that conversation lmao.
