I don’t know if the show runners for FUBAR have actually been to Guyana or know anything about it besides a vague Jim Jones reference

I probably sent a lot of these now im so sorry lmfao 😅
You mentioned in one of the asks that some countries are like a prototype/based of our existing countries, like Germany=Mondstadt, Liyue=China, Inzauma=Japan....
So even though the language is more or less identical for you to make heads and tails in a conversation or writing in a book, the reverse side does not.
Creator!Reader who knows a couple of languages (plus points if they're atleast fluent or have a understanding of it despite not being able to speak said language) and being born from a country that doesnt have the same language as the countries Teyvat based off. Basically Spanish, Italian, Filipino, Scandinavian languages that also have their own way of writing.
Imagine feeling homesick and the only thing that keeps you occupied is the notebook and pen you have while the others converse in a meeting or in a hangout. You started writing in your tongue and re-reading it to relive memories.
Zhongli, AlHaitham, Albedo, Jean, maybe the Berry bros too (Diluc & Kaeya) get curious only to have a double-take and immediately thinks that maybe there is a forgotten land in Teyvat that has this language, I mean Morax stayed faithful to Liyue and Barbatos blessed his country with abundance of supplies and freedom. Teyvat gods and archons played favourites, so why wouldn't you as well? (Bonus: Khaenriah flashbacks) (also I know these arent enough characters but how should I know? I only have a handful of them and I ran out of Primos😭
The people from Akademiya though? I mean they went hard on theorizing and picking apart the language of their creator. Have you seen Matpat's descent to insanity the more FNAF continues to push out LoRe? Thats basically them because Teyvat doesn't have a country based on Creator's birth country. They're grasping nothing but air and dead ends and the only lead they have is you, but couldnt ask because you look so down and they cant bear to see Creator sad....
(NEW BANNER TOMORROW AND I DONT HAVE ENOGH PRIMOGEMS HALP---)
Rip Vine boom no primos 🙏 hope u got some more by this time bc i was so late to reply lol - DUDE IM SO READY FOR THE GORG KAVEH <333
BERRY BROS!! Thats it, thats the only way im gonna refer to them now.
Not super long to add onto ur bc UR SO SMART AND SUCH A GOOD WRITER VINEBOOM U SHOULD ALSO WRITE STUFF SO I CAN GO OBSESS OVER UR WRITING WITH A MILLION FERAL COMMENTS-!!!
Tumblr media
(Cute owl house gif is like, metaphorially u and zhongli in this lol)
EDIT 8/23/23: So this may be inaccurate/not that good to my Hispanic Readers out there! Sorry about that, I'l make sure to do better in the future.
EDIT 1/1/24: Unfortunately there are even more issues here, and I'm really sorry about that. I expanded on it more in my Eldritch fanfic post in Part 2, but it was exoticism of me to use the word "Huangdi". I have since replaced it with "Emperor", and don't intend to just erase the mistake like it never happened. But I did change it in the headcanons for better readability. Again, I'm genuninely sorry about this, and will absolutely be watching out/doing better in the future. I hope you understand.
THIS SOUNDS SO SAD, LIKE THIS COULD DEF BE ANGST, ESP SINCE U HAVE NO FAMILIAR-ISH CULTURE TO TURN TO-
tbh im american and i def dont think theres a u.s. country- oh god at least I hope not, damn but im also familiar with mexican culture so i wouldnt miss the united states, but id miss mexican culture…
BUT!!
You have a lot of amazing people who care about you in Teyvat, so they won’t let you stew in ur homesickness for long
like random said, i could see it being small stuff
ok so imma just-
LATINO! READER TIME BABBYYYYY
(i do this bc its just the culture/language im more familiar with, but dont let that discourage anyone from requesting other cultures! I will def do my research, or ur welcome to tell me all about it so i can write it better! <3)
THAT BEING SAID IM MOSTLY WHITE PLS LMK IF SHIT IS WRONG/SPANISH IS WRONG BC IM STILL A BEGINNER MY BELOVED LATINES!
<3 YOU GUYS
you’ve been in the game-turned-life world of Genshin Impact for nearly 6 months now, turns out time isnt wonky as hell like it is if you were playing the game, half bc u bribed Albedo with answers to his many questions about you if he figured out the time difference, and half bc of ur internal clock
people would notice the cuss words first lmao
like Xiao hearing u stubbing ur toe on the million and one steps up to Wangshu Inn, hijueputa!
or Keqing pointing out the words you coo at the dogs hanging out by the bridge outside the harbor,
un perrito tan buenoooo!! :’)
while most would just, " hmm, maybe a dialect of one of the other countries we havent heard…"
but Zhongli? he’s been ready for centuries in case the prophecy came true within his lifetime, afterall, many things changed while he’s been alive, not crazy to him that you might descend randomly
While everyone else was unprepared, bc u were like… the oldest deity, more legend than history, so ppl just thought Morax was a little overly faithful …so when it actually happened,, Morax was just smirking as he watched ur golden shooting star streak the night sky… while absolute pandemonium consumed the mortals and adepti in liyue lmao
(like that scene of Regina George in Mean Girls watching the student body break out into an all out brawl just smirking 😭 pls god look it up if u dont know what i mean- )
So Morax- Zhongli, has been ready for you, just in case, to pay attention to what kind of person you’d be, learn your favorite clothes/colors/offerings, see what things you’d like to talk about with him (hopefully for hours) etc.
He was observant, and with his memory, he practically gave himself headaches sometimes with how aware he was,
on one of those days he was overwhelmed by the mortal crowds, the smells, the market yelling, and all the change from what he thought he knew-
Zhongli noticed you in your own melancholy, and curious, he began to stroll just behind
You sit at Wanmin restaurant, still somber, and ask Xiangling to
“please try out these recipes? they’re from my world, and id really love to have something like them again..”
a true experimental chef as always, Xiangling quickly takes up your offer, and u follow her into the kitchens in the back (the restaurant is much more real than in game, they have gorgeous inside seating, all shades of red coloring the walls and lots of pretty latticework-)
Zhongli takes a seat finally, he has a usual table at this point he comes in so much coughtorunintoyoucough the staff know it's his and give him tea pretty quickly
the food, and the looks, makes it your favorite restaurant in Liyue, the Liuli Pavilion a little too fancy for casual dining, afterall, Zhongli would know
He’s tried to keep track of your favorite places to be in Liyue too, and kept his near full attention on what you say when he asks after your stays in Liyue (he hasn’t felt the need to pay that much attention or felt that much interest in conversation partners in… decades?)
So when you come out of the kitchen, throwing your head back and laughing, "Sí, sí! It all tastes so close Xiangling! Gracias, thank you!"
He wants… to know.
to know what those strange, but delicious looking, foods are all balanced on two big dinner plates
Xiangling carrying whatever you couldn’t just behind, a pitcher of white liquid, it smells, like cinnamon?
He raises a hand, and offers the extra seats at his table, (when did his tea go cold? he only just sat down, he couldn’t have spent that long thinking about you…)
You notice and look over, a giddy grin lighting up your face (…hmm, perhaps he needs to transform into his Exuvia form and let off some steam, his chest has warmed too much right now for him to just be sitting here…)
You plop into the seat beside him, but not before carefully placing the plates in front of both you and Zhongli
You scootch around until you’re turned towards him, as always, Zhongli looks… actually kind of, happy?
a small soft smile pulls at his lips, his eyes half-lidded as they meet yours, his usual red eyeliner framing his monolids perfectly, he looks like he’s been,, well, sculpted from stone, an artwork come to life
“…My Emperor? Could I trouble you to tell me about the dishes before us?”
the geo god’s pleasantly smooth and deep voice felt so soft asking you that, like he didn’t want to push you one direction or the other
“Oh! Right! Sorry, these are from my home country, back in my world, or at least, as close as Xiangling and I can get to them!”
Your smile brightens your face once more, clearing away any leftover stormclouds from your mood earlier, and as you launch into explaining (Xiangling had to get back to orders, so it’s just you two now)
You list it all, the quintessential: quesadillas, empanadas, tamales, chorizo (you had to combine at least 5 different spices to Mondstadt sausages to get anywhere close to the real thing) the dips obviously, salsa, queso, guacamole, and the easy street tacos, and finally the horchata, but also all the weird fruits Teyvat has with chile, like Sunsettias mixed with Harra from Sumeru or Lavender melons with Wolfhook berries… all surpringly pretty good
(the Sun-Harra combo tastes like mango, a sort of deeper taste of pineapple/kiwi and a sort of light orange taste? all with the nice addition of chile flavors, the Lavender melons and Wolfhooks helped imitate chamoy enough that your heart was satisfied)
…you realize you’ve just been talking about the last meal you had with your family/friends instead of the food after a bit, and Zhongli hasn’t said anything…
you trail off and look back over your shoulder (u were practically about to get your shirt in the imitation guac u were leaning so far over the table to point and talk)
you’re about to sheepishly apologize for taking over the conversation, and ask if he wants to try anything (Zhongli can handle spice so u dont have to worry abt that at least)
but as u finally see his face, u just stop, and dont end up saying anything
He’s just, looking at you.
his smile's not huge, but big enough to make his eyes look happy, and Zhongli’s just… looking at you.
You can’t describe the look he’s giving you, but you suddenly feel… a wave of shyness wash over your heart in your chest, because he’s looking almost like, maybe like, he’s sort of, waiting for you to keep talking, his tan skin warm in the golden rays of the sun beginning to set, you don’t know why you’re noticing any of these things, and he gently, slowly, makes a move to lean into your space a little
almost above your armrest, head inches from your shoulder, he finally moves to stop looking at you-
He looks like a painting as he looks down, his eyelashes almost sitting on his high cheekbones,
you have to move your head to looking at the table too as he moved so close,
you feel your shoulders reflexitively hitch upwards as you brushed the hair on the side of his head as you turned away
He looks around, and then moves his head, not his body, he’s still leaning toward you, to look you right in the eyes again
“Why did you stop? I haven’t said much, I apologize, but it’s only because I wanted to hear you without anything interrupting you.”
You cough a little strained, “Oh! Oh I get it now yeah, thanks-”
“I want to hear you more,” his black eyes begin to warm with gold, you can vaguely see the shape of his diamond pupil revealing itself, “I want to hear about… everything, if you’ll tell me? The language, the food, the drinks, your family, your dances, your country, I want to hear it all. Won’t you please let me hear your voice some more?”
GOOOD LOOORDDDD, ITS SO LONGGGGG IM SO SORRRYYY 😭😭
OKAY IM MOSTLY SORRY THAT THIS SCENARIO HAPPENED??? IDK WHERE ZHONGLI CAME FROM- GOD IM SUBCONCIOUSLY IN LOVE WITH THAT MAN I GUESS, SORRY RANDOMANTICS-
uh, hope somebody got anything out of this, sorry abt the length, again,
also pls somebody tell me if what i said about culture/food was alright! If not I’ll def change it, pls dont let me keep it up if its inaccurate/wrong!!
Safe Travels you guys,
💀♒️

Flamin' Not
Eva Longoria directed a movie about Flamin' Hot Cheetos. It is supposed to depict a real life Latino rags-to-riches story.
It's about a poor Mexican-American, Richard Montañez, who got a job as a janitor in a Frito-Lay factory and saved it from shutting down by inventing the "Flamin' Hot" line of products.
It was not terrible. Though it came very close to feeling like a Hallmark movie. But as I was watching it, the story felt very formulaic and a bit too... feel good. Like a bullshit fish story an uncle might tell you in order to seem cool. True stories usually aren't quite so tidy and trope-tastic.
Reality usually has some weirdness that is very difficult to capture when writing fiction. Like, in the movie about Reality Winner where they used a real life transcript, there were things a writer could never imagine. In one scene a random FBI dude opens the door and says, "Is this a room?"
So I was real suspicious there could be some Flamin' Hot nonsense in this movie. I figured they just took some dramatic license as many "based on a true story" movies do. I decided to look up the real life Richard and see how close his actual story was compared to the movie.
Turns out... it was a complete work of fiction.
He made it all up.
The only part that was true... he was a janitor at Frito-Lay and eventually got promoted to their Hispanic marketing department.
After he left the company he just started telling people he invented Flamin' Hot. And since the internet wasn't very robust yet, people were just like, "Yeah, okay. Neat."
He came up with an entire narrative with backstory and side characters and humorous anecdotes and a thrilling climax where his neighborhood drug dealers took samples to the street for some guerilla marketing to spread the word about spicy Cheetos--saving an entire factory and hundreds of jobs.
And in the less cynical 1990s, people just accepted it as the truth.
Companies would hire him to give motivational speeches. Eventually he wrote a book about his fake story. And he tours around the country telling his uplifting story of spice and puffed cornmeal.
And Frito-Lay just kinda... let him.
I think they liked his story more than the one where a bunch of food nerds created spicy Cheetos in a lab in the Midwest. He was giving them free marketing. He gave their Flamin' products street cred in Latin communities.
But when journalists finally got around to fact checking his story, Frito-Lay very casually told them "None of our records show that Richard Montañez was involved in any capacity in the Flamin’ Hot."
It seems their line was they would let him lie without consequence, but they weren't going to lie for him.
I have no idea what to think about this. I watched an entire movie about fucking Cheetos thinking it was a true story.
Part of me appreciates the hustle. He seems like an okay person. Stayed faithful to his wife for decades, speaks of her with love, and took good care of his kids. He inspires his community and is involved in philanthropy. And he made bank by tricking a bunch of white folks into hiring the Flamin' Hot dude to give speeches to motivate their employees.
Seems like a harmless enough grift. I don't know.

Why afrolatino Jason Todd works,an analysis by an irl afrolatina and thee Jason expert
His personality is EXTREMELY realistic for a black or latino and especially both man. He's cocky asf,a (multiple time!) mama's boy but mouths off to his dad with no hesitant and for fun even, respects women by seeing the female characters as either equals or above him, roughouses with his brothers,a big ass nerd since childhood and acts tough and invulnerable for the sake of looking cool but his heart's as big as his tits and a lot of his lines are so sappy in a poetic way i feel the need to avert my eyes when i see them to give him privacy
His pre-reboot Robin self reminds me of SEVERAL canon young black boy characters(Miles Morales,Oscar Pine,Zak Saturday and possibly more)
Duke is his favorite brother despite knowing him YEARS less than the other Batboys.Do i even need to say anything on this one
Every single woman he's been attracted to have been woc, those being Rose(half cambodian),Artemis(egyptian)and Dana(black). He dosen't like white girls <3
Further proof? He had KORIAND'R HERSELF throwing herself at him but showed active disenterest. For context:We're talking about post taking away her black-coding
Him growing up poor can be explained by being a second/third gen inmigrant making finding jobs hard for his family and to this day i remember when my history teacher called us 'a poor country' because of how much damage colonizers did here.Let me have this
The Joker killing him at 15 and him getting victim blamed and a bad rep despite what a good kid he was gains a new light if it's because he was a black child and so does him becoming Red Hood because of it.Also.Red HOOD.C'mon
The artist for Red Hood:Outlaws said he headcanons him as latino because he is and an iconic event a few years back was John Boyega clowning a racist on twitter by saying he wants to play Jason. Here's how the stars can align
African-American parents commonly give their kids greek names and the original Jason was a greek mythos hero!!
Let's be deeply serious,Jason would not have even HALF the gross fans he does if he was black. You think fanon onlys would be riding that hard for an afrolatino man seeking vengeance for himself with gray morality? They'd act like he's worse than Slade and the Joker combined and call him ugly nonstop💀Comics readers would have him all to ourselves with no weirdos getting their hands on him
Canonically almost entierly uniterested in casual relathionships, smoking or drinking so there's some stereotypes off the table
Selina,Babs and Kory have green eyes. They're all black in one way or another.Jason has green eyes. You understand
He's a classical literature nerd and latino lit is some of the best there is
Bombshells him is a spaniard and that's exactly the kind of move DC would pull with an actual latino character(the run released post the hc for him becoming popular)
Legoverse and webtoons made him a gamer.Hashtag cringefail black gamer dude realness
Something something the soft uwu black boy Robin is actually kid him and not Duke
Giving him a fridge ass build and a buzzcut in Gotham Knights was DC stereotyping(/BIG JOKE,PLEASE THERE'S ACTUAL REASONS IT'S SHIT)
Five words:Dominican horror folklore based tactics
Talia and his' mother-son relathionship is made all the more heartwarming and sad
Stephanie and i are the same person so she's black like me by extension and she's the only Batfam girl he really gets along with and imo this would also include Nell and Tiffany if the writers weren't fuckasses and went through with their actual good stories
Look up Aubrey Joseph vids. There's no better fancast for him out there not in looks but in personality
Trivia finale:His birthday is the same date as Dominican Restoration Day,red represents blood on our country's flag,at our schools we sell mini packets of neapolitan cream with mini spoons to eat them and his Lego movie is called 'Family Matters'

OPLA fan cast polls - Sir Crocodile prelims round 2
Tumblr media
There will only be 1 winner, so choose wisely.
Propaganda under the cut.
Tom Hardy: Okay so I feel like he's a very versatile actor especially with his voice, he played Bane in the Dark Knight Rises, so if you want LA Croco to have that classic deep voice he can get it. He can also get the body type. If you're not sure picture him with the make up.
Oscar Isaac:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laith Ashley: Transmasc, Latino, and has beautiful eyes, I think he would make for a pretty good Crocodile!
Pêpê Rapazote: he’s a Portuguese actor known for his role as Chepe from Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. he has a deep voice, a great smolder, and i think a scar running across his nose would look very cute. seriously, watch the Narcos shootout salon scene on youtube if you don’t believe me.
Dhafer L’Abidine:
He is Tunisian (which is one country away from Egypt, the country that Alabasta is based on). He has a really cool accent. He is 6’0, so he’s pretty tall. He’s 50 years old. He used to be a professional football player, so he’s beefy. I don’t know, he just looks a lot like Crocodile and checks all of the boxes in an actor I’d want to play Crocodile.
I met him 5 minutes ago and look at him and tell me there's not huge Crocodile's vibes. He's a Tunisian actor and he speaks 4 languages including English.

Vox's Wife 1: Cereal for Dinner (Scenario) Yandere Human Vox X Columbian Marie (Hazbin Hotel)
(Fun fact, My co-author who Marie is based on is part Columbian. We headcanon that Vox would be the type of man in the 1950's to like Latinas and Latinos (Valentino is possibly Latino) so we decided to do the thing where men go and marry someone from a different country and have a wife that way: Like mail-order bride, a bit WARNING THIS HAS SOME THINGS THAT ARE BASED OFF THE 1950s THE PAST SUCKED! WE DO NOT CONDONE ANY OF IT IF IT IS MENTIONED)
(No One's POV)
Marie had just legally married her husband three days ago, he had come to her country and offered her a life in America and now they were together. They spent a three-day honeymoon in a beautiful hotel. Now He is carrying her over the threshold of their home. She grins. It was such a big house. She was excited to have kids and see them running around! He kisses her and spins her around. He was so happy to have his new wife, the love of his life.
"Okay, I got to give you the tour!" He says and takes her hand. He lived in a sort of penthouse home, it was amazing, to say the least.
Marie looked at Vox. She could tell he was excited- the entire time he was there in her country, he'd show her everything there was to television at the station- she didn't understand much of it, but he was so excited that it didn't matter to Marie that she didn't understand much of it. She was sure he'd be the same with the house.
Which he was and then he pulled out a box that had a big bow on it. "I know your home did not have one, and I don't want you to feel like you have to take care of me. So a friend said, why not get a dishwasher? So I got the latest model!" He was so excited his friend told him how happy his wife was when she got one from him. So he wanted to make his wife happy."
He seemed so happy to show her it and to be honest, she was happy he seemed to think about her. He even got it in a pretty aquamarine color.
"Oh- Vox- I- I don't- know how to use it."
She said as she realized she wouldn't even know how to start it.
"I got instructions!" He says. "Do not worry, we will learn together, and hey if you can understand how to use it just fill it and empty it and I will manage the rest." He says and kisses her.
She pulls him close and smiles. He is such a good husband, he takes such good care of her~
(Vox being in charge of tech XD)
She was nervous at first.
It wasn't like she lived in another state, or even in North America.
She had to leave an entirely different country, a different continent, to be with him.
And it was scary, so many things could have happened..but she wouldn't have chosen differently if she could go back.
He nuzzles his face into her neck. "Now you sit down, and relax and I will make dinner." He says.
(Oh no XD Marie does not know he does not know how to cook but he is trying to be a good husband XD Welp I hope he has fire insurance XD)
(Oh god he's gonna be like my grandfather and give her food poisoning)
(He is trying but he is going end up killing his wife via fire or poisoned food XD)
She let out a hug, just holding his arms in place, enjoying the feeling of him wrapped around her.
"Just one more minute." She said softly, leaning back into him.
He smiles and nuzzles her more. He loved this, if they could stay like this forever they would.
"Mmmm, okay, I will sit." She says kissing his cheek, the one under his half-blind eye.
She sat down for only ten minutes later the smoke alarm to go off. Marie having a grandfather who could not cook knew what happened. She jumped into action and put out the fire. Vox felt terrible as he looked at the burnt food. He could not even do this right, what type of husband was he…
In the months they'd known each other, she was always the one to cook or he'd take her out.
Seems now she knew why.
She could tell he was upset. "Vox. It's okay. I'm just glad you're not hurt."
"I am sorry, I am not a good en-" She kisses him to shut him up.
"Honey." She says and strokes his cheek. "You do not have to be a good cook, I can be the main cook, An equal partnership is splitting it up equally. I am a good cook and you are good with tech, I can take care of the home and soon our kids. You can be the main breadwinner. We will be okay."
He pulls her into a kiss and they make out. He then looked at the burnt food. "All I got left is cereal and some milk."
"That will do, we can go shopping later." She kisses him again and then they make bowls of cereal. Marie was eager to try all the flavors she did not have in her country. So it ended up being good, cause it seem Vox had at least ten different characters.
(well when you burn everything you cook you need variety in other stuff XD)
(XD)
(I hate these cereals XD There are at least THREE Brands from the 1950s that had a clown mascot on their cereal like HELL NO XD)
He was back to his usual charming self, happy to show off the television and all the channels he had for them to watch as they ate side by side, with her leaning into his side once she had finished her cereal. She wasn't always able to keep up with shows, she spoke English of course, but it was a second language, Vox seemed more than happy to wrap his arm around her and tell her what was going on.
"So they were fighting and now-"
"I don't need a translation for that." She said laughing as the couple kissed.
"Oh- yeah- right-" he felt her hand on his face, turning him to look at her.
"Kiss me like that, Vox."
He could tell the tone in her voice and he smirked. Setting their empty bowls on the table. They did have a whole penthouse to break in,~
(My Co-author: Lmao the fact I was imagining it as a very soft and romantic act)
(XD Vox is a horn dog: Marie was thinking romance and Vox, we are breaking in this couch XD)

WE'RE STARTING SPOOKY SEASON EARLIER IM SOOOOOO EXCITED OMG
okay okay i wanna hear your opinion on pedro boys and what monsters they would be !!!!
LETS START SPOOKY SUMMER OFF RIGHT AND IM SO GLAD ITS WITH YOU BB thank you for sending this amazing ask in 🥺🎃 ✨
Okay…this is something I know we’ve talked about many times in our deep discussions but now that I think about the other boys I’m like “…oh shit” so here we GO LOL
Javi P: a type of were-creature, I love the idea of Javi having the ties to a Texas and Latino based monster and as someone who’s great tia swore she saw the chupacabra and then knowing there’s a monster/beast I’ve heard legend about living in the hill country, theres something familiar and close knit tradition about were-creatures based in local and cultural urban legends that fits Javi’s vibes about being so connected to his home
Pero T: yes he is a peak werewolf but I will say this until I write the fic but he is a lake monster, creature from the black lagoon style, he lurks likes his isolation and is aware to his surroundings. He would do perfect as a lake monster simply surviving as a grumpy hiding monster under the waves
Marcus Pike: DRAGON!!! Grand beautiful majestic creatures that hoard precious things? Marcus is all about the arts and seeing the beauty in everything, those vibes just make me think of him as this beautiful grand dragon that hoards art until he finds you his most precious treasure
Dave York: something demonic, he always reminds me of the Lucifer figure - this perfect soldier who followed orders until he questioned his existence and is now disillusioned and corrupt living on his own terms now
Frankie: my sweet werewolf boy, loyal big and forever protective and will bare his fangs whenever he feels threatens and has a bit of a temper, also can you imagine how COZY HE WOULD BE??
Din: ghost, he’s a ghost that’s simply living in this strange beskar armor but his spirit is so strong and righteous that it stays alive and haunts his armor. But he is tender and speaks with the softest whispers in the wind, like a echo you wonder if you even heard in the first place
Joel: a ghost like Din but a much scarier version, like a spirit of vengeance that is violent and fierce, powerful in its rage but a known protector that watches over anyone who walks home alone at night, he sits in the trees with eyes that are so dark they blend with the night
Jack: Vampire, suave a bit extravagant and luxurious and I only am doing this cause I want him to make all the stupid vampire puns and even has fake vampire plastic teeth he playfully uses from time to time, also can you imagine him slick gelled hair back super classic Dracula style?? 😮‍💨
Dieter: shapeshifter, he’s a man of many faces and many roles that you wonder if he even knows what his true self looks like anymore, goes into how he’s an actor and I think there’s so many layers to dieter that he keeps up to make sure no one truly knows him
Ezra: eldritch space creature, has many eyes speaks in many voices that seem out of this realm but he is kind and moves very gently. He is wise beyond his years and is interested in all things human, but like any eldritch creature it can be tricky and turn on a whim when need be
Javi G: Mothman!! Super sweet and chattery and is kind of an odd ball but simply wants to be left alone in the woods but remains curious about the world around him, holds a certain charm to him but is still a dangerous creature underneath it all
Wow I ramble away with these I’m SORRY

Ok okay but how does the VARIA spend christmas being the italian bitches they are living in a catholic country? Do they just IGNORE zhat christmas is happening? Is christmas actually a busy time because people wanna get someone killed for christmas/the new year so they all gotta do overtime like stressed store clerks? Is ANYONE going to church? Are any of them maybe just nor catholic and dont celebrate christmas in the first place? Is lussuria forcing a secret santa? I NEED TO KNOW YOUR TAKE
I fucking love thinking about Christmas with the Varia. Love it so much I’ve actually written countless headcanons on this, full fics on this, all quite a bit far back in the past though, so it was really great to come back to this! I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did!
Okay, so first off, I don’t believe that all of the Varia are Italian. It’s part of canon that Bel can’t reveal his actual nationality because of the havoc it would create among nations, but I do think he’s foreign royalty and I’ve always pretty strongly headcanoned Levi as Latino American. The Varia recruits from all around the world and I think that not all of them come from places where Christmas is traditionally celebrated and those that do come from Christmas-celebrating places do bring a mixing pot of Christmas traditions.
I will say that I don’t think many of the Varia members are practicing Catholics. Some might hold the Catholic faith in their own way or observe other religious beliefs (I don’t know why but I do think Lussuria dabbles, on and off, in Wicca and holds an interest in Hoodoo), but practicing...not by a long shot. Every part of their life’s flies against most of the strongly held tenants of Christianity-based faiths. I do think Lussuria really loves the idea of Christmas church services and church Christmas pageants/plays, and he definitely tries to rope the others into going with him, just because it’s so delightfully Christmasy, but it’s not because of any strongly held religious beliefs he has. Squalo is the only one I honestly headcanon as having any interest in attending Christmas mass, but he prefers to do so alone, blending into the crowd.
Xanxus hates Christmas. Absolutely detests it with every fiber of his being, though he, of course, expects all the Christmas gifts. Other than that, people learn quickly to leave him alone during the Christmas season, which puts him in an even worse mood than usual. He spends most of the Christmas season getting piss-ass drunk and avoiding going too much outside his rooms, where Lussuria’s Christmas obsession reigns supreme, or taking most of the harder missions as a way to blow off steam. Because Xanxus does snag most of the missions (and clears them quicker than anyone else in the Varia), the rest of the Varia members do have a slower than normal workload during the Christmas season.
Everyone buys Xanxus Christmas gifts. Plural. Even if they don’t personally celebrate Christmas, they buy him the gifts. It’s the same line of reasoning as to why people used to sacrifice gifts to the gods, honestly – if they do, they feel they’ll be safe. That being said, Bel puts almost no effort into the gift he gives, Squalo gives too practical of gifts, Lussuria’s gifts are always gaudy in their wrapping, but Levi…Levi spends months selecting just the right gifts for his boss.
Squalo doesn’t really like Christmas. He’d be fine with mostly not celebrating it, though Lussuria and the others really don’t give him much choice and even he’ll admit it’s not absolutely horrible. Christmas is just…too peace on early, goodwill to men feeling for him though, too slow-paced and merry and he tries to get out of as many of Lussuria’s Christmas ‘traditions’ as he possibly can. That being said, he’s not throwing things, like his boss does, every time someone so much as utters the words ‘merry Christmas’ or anything.
Christmas stresses Levi out to insane amounts because he really is very much a perfectionist and he wants every Christmas to be picture perfect. Both him and Lussuria are the two Varia members the most into Christmas, with Levi being the one who feels the stress of that time of year the most.
Bel just wants gifts and candy and treats. He really doesn’t give two flying fucks about the holiday as long as Santa shows up with what he’s asked for. Speaking of Santa, he still believes and still waits up…mostly because he wants to see if he can go toe to toe with Santa. I mean, Santa’s this magical being, he should be a good opponent, right? And Bel kind of wonders, being a magical being, what Santa’s blood would look like.
As mentioned, Lussuria…Christmas is one of his favourite things of all times. It’s his absolute favourite holiday. He’s the type who, once Halloween is done, plans this year’s Christmas and he really adores the traditional ideas of Christmas and all the related activities that go along with it, just one of those Christmas’s that seem like Norman Rockwell would paint a picture of it. He decorates the Varia’s base every year, helps plan Christmas dinner, tries to organize all these  ‘fun’ activities with the other Varia members, and definitely insists on every one of the core Varia members (excluding Xanxus, because not even Lussuria is going to be brave enough to try that one) to gather around the Christmas tree Christmas morning to open gifts together. He handmakes Christmas ornaments (and has roped the other Varia members into doing it with him) and he personally hand-sewed and embroidered the Varia member’s stockings.

straw hats ethnicity/birthplace/nationality headcanons
just a foreword. these are just my personal interpretations of these characters. also to define the difference between the three:
ethnicity is basically your heritage. (eg. mixed hispanic/black/white)
birthplace is just what it sounds like. country you are born in. does not necessarily indicate ethnicity. if I have a specific place in mind beyond the country i'll specify but it'll usually just be the country
nationality is the country or culture that you publicly associate with in this case. not always your birthplace.
excellent let's get into it then
Monkey D. Luffy
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Foosha Village, Goa Kingdom (East Blue) Oda's Pick: Brazil
Ethnicity: Latino Birthplace: Brazil Nationality: Brazilian
Other Notes: these headcanons were based on an SBS where Oda assigned nationalities to the straw hats, but very little detail was given beyond a location for each member. Luffy's chosen country of origin was Brazil, which I feel is a great fit for him, and I wouldn't change anything about it.
Roronoa Zoro
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Shimotsuki Village (East Blue) Oda's Pick: Japan
Ethnicity: Mixed (Hispanic-East Asian) Birthplace: Mexico Nationality: Japanese
Other Notes: Zoro was born in Mexico, but ended up in Japan through currently unknown means at a very, very young age. It's there that he ended up finding the Isshin Dojo and met Koushirou and his daughter, Kuina. It's unknown who his family is or if they're even still alive, much like in canon. He also has little to no memories of his early childhood due to the young age at which he ended up in Japan, nor any particular personal connection to his Mexican heritage due to this lack of memories.
EDIT IN LIGHT OF SBS VOL 105: After the Shimotsuki clan had settled in Japan, Roronoa Arashi, the son of Shimotsuki Furiko and Roronora Pinzoro, set off to Mexico to have adventures there, and instead met a woman there named Terra, and together, the two had the bouncing baby blade-loving moss ball who we all know and love.
That being said, while the circumstances of how exactly Zoro ended up in Shimotsuki Village again is unknown (it's thought that perhaps he crawled onto a departing boat as a toddler, but no one can be sure), perhaps it was fate that drew him back to the land of his father...
Nami
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Oykot Kingdom (East Blue) Oda's Pick: Sweden
Ethnicity: Gaelic Birthplace: Ireland Nationality: Indonesian
Other Notes: A lot (but not all) of the nationality picks are based on the geography of their hometown compared to real-life locations, and apparently Cocoyashi Village is based on the Bali town of Ubud.
I don't really see Nami as Swedish tbh. I think she's more Irish. I think it's mostly because she has red hair instead of blonde.
Usopp
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Syrup Village, Gecko Islands (East Blue) Oda's Pick: Africa (no specific nation given)
Ethnicity: Biracial (Black/White) Birthplace: England Nationality: English-Jamaican
Other Notes: first things first he was done SO dirty by Oda. hopefully this is a better interpretation. as such it's gonna be the longest entry here by far
Syrup Village highly resembles an archetypal rural English village, so it would make sense for it to just be in England's countryside.
Banchina was an Englishwoman who had lived there her entire life, and Yasopp is a Jamaican sailor who briefly settled down there before he left to become part of the Red-Hair Pirates.
Usopp considers himself both English and Jamaican, and takes great pride in being both, usually conveyed by his love of the Going Merry and fond memories of Kaya and the Usopp Pirates, and his immense respect for his father and his dreams of being a legendary warrior of the sea, although he has relatively little knowledge about Jamaica beyond his memories of his father due to lacking the proper resources to research it. He normally speaks with a country English accent, but as Sogeking, he speaks in a fake Jamaican accent pieced together from his memories of Yasopp, as his father is a source of both great pride and internal strength for him.
A year into the timeskip, Usopp left the Boin Archipelago after getting strong enough to and learning how to use the Pop Greens, and visited Jamaica for the remainder of it, mostly to finally learn about his heritage and his father's homeland straight from the source. By the time he returns to the Sabaody Archipelago, two years after being separated from everyone by Bartholomew Kuma, he now speaks in a genuine Jamaican accent, following his post-timeskip theme of truly becoming the tales he told, like Sogeking.
Sanji
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Germa Kingdom (North Blue) Oda's Pick: France
Ethnicity: White Birthplace: Sealand Nationality: French
Other Notes: when you think about it, Germa is basically Sealand if Sealand was much bigger and recognized as a country because the only family there was a military superpower. I do not feel comfortable drawing any other parallels to Germa here for obvious reasons. anyways Sanji ran away and ended up on a cruise ship's kitchen before being attacked by the Cook Pirates, a powerful pirate crew from French waters, and then ending up on a barren rock with the crew's captain, Zeff. They survived the horrible ordeal of starvation, and he then took in Sanji as his own son and raised him on the Baratie.
Because Sanji is believed to be dead by the Vinsmokes, he is no longer legally considered a Sealander, and as such, he quite proudly considers himself French, like his mentor and father figure, Zeff.
Tony Tony Chopper
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Sakura Kingdom (Grand Line) Oda's Pick: Canada
Ethnicity: Indigenous Canadian Birthplace: Canada Nationality: Canadian
Other Notes: I didn't really change much from Oda's original suggestion bc i think Chopper being from Canada is already pretty fitting. I did specify that he is Indigenous here bc reindeer are native to North America. Also, he reminds me of my best friend who is also Indigenous Canadian, so that definitely played a part as well. : >
Nefertari Vivi
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Alburna, Arabasta Kingdom (Grand Line) Oda's Pick: Not Listed
Ethnicity: Arabic Birthplace: Baghdad, Iraq Nationality: Iraqi
Other Notes: Vivi is and will always be part of the Straw Hat Pirates, even if it will likely never be made publicly known for the sake of her country. If she ever desires to sail with them again, they'll all be more than happy to take her aboard once more.
Arabasta is based on a wide variety of places in and around the Arabian peninsula, but Alburna, where Vivi is from, appears to be based specifically on Baghdad.
Nico Robin
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Ohara (West Blue) Oda's Pick: Russia
Ethnicity: Biracial (Black/Hispanic) Birthplace: Alexandria, Egypt Nationality: Mexican
Other Notes: While Ohara is indeed based on typical rural English villages, like Foosha and Syrup, it being the famous center of a hub of knowledge and being known for a subsequent horrific destruction mirrors the famous tale of Egypt's Library of Alexandria. As such, I think of Robin as being Egyptian with Mexican heritage.
Robin was born to to Nico Olvia, an Egyptian scholar, and an unnamed scholar from Mexico who met her while they were both working on the same archeological project. After Alexandria's destruction, Robin journeyed to Mexico to get into contact with her father, only to learn he had already been killed by the World Government for his connection to Olvia. She then lived in Mexico for a while, bouncing from place to place, before eventually getting acquainted with pirates and ending up working for Crocodile, and eventually, following the events of Arabasta, becoming part of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Franky
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: South Blue Oda's Pick: USA
Ethnicity: Mixed [White/Hispanic/Black] Birthplace: Santa Monica, USA Nationality: Italian
Other Notes: SUUUUUPERRRRR! Much like most of these entries, Oda's choice country is still present here in some way. Many of his most well-known character traits, such as his love of burgers and cola, bombastic personality, fondness of surf culture, and engineering talent link him heavily to the USA, particularly the U.S. state of California, which is famous for its beaches, technological innovation, and legendary film industry.
The Italian nationality is obvious, as Water 7 is heavily based on the Italian city of Venezia, with its gorgeous architecture and signature canals. While he does act like an American, he evidently loves Water 7 and considers it his true home, as it's where he really grew up as part of Tom's Workers.
there's no special reasoning behind making him mixed beyond that i'm also mixed and I think it's fun to add little bits of myself into characters I enjoy and respect. His parents were American pirates operating out of Santa Monica, and during a business trip to Italy, they abandoned him at Water 7. Oh well!
California Boys, No. 1 SUPER guys~! Cola, Steel, our ships are UNREAL~!
Brook
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: West Blue Oda's Pick: Austria
Ethnicity: Black Birthplace: Salzburg, Austria-Hungary Nationality: Austrian
Other Notes: i think it would be funny if Brook went "hey let's go visit my home town! i sure do hope nothing weird has happened in the 50 years i've been gone!" and then learned his home country was shattered into a bunch of other countries while he was dead that's the entire reason i chose austria-hungary over just austria btw
also everyone jokes that brook must personally know Mozart because he's so old, unaware that Brook was literally also born in Salzburg, albeit about a decade after Mozart had already died.
Jinbei
Tumblr media
Canon Origin: Fish-Man Island, Ryugu Kingom (Grand Line) Oda's Pick: India
Ethnicity: Polynesian Birthplace: Kingdom of Hawai'i Nationality: Hawaiian
Other Notes: Apparently a lot of people also feel that Jinbei is also from the Pacific, which is neat to know. As a whale-shark fishman, it would make sense for him to live there, after all!
(This blog does not recognize American ownership of Hawai'i as legitimate, and as such, I refer to it as a sovereign nation, rather than part of the United States.)
I don't really have any other notes to give since Jinbei is the only straw hat I haven't met yet at the time of writing, as I'm only about to start Impel Down and he hasn't been introduced yet. I'll flesh this page out a bit more as I learn more about him later on.
Thanks for listening!
(as I progress through the story, i might do one for the warlords once i learn more about one piece's worldbuilding! keep your eyes peeled for that)

I've talked about how weird is it that people think Aang is white even though his culture is not only based on that of tibetans and he looks like one too but is also literally a buddhist monk so it only feels right to make a post adressing it with Zuko too.Maybe it's because i'm black and grew up in a latino country and therefore am used to being around poc but even kid me never understood how people watched a show with a black haired boy named Zuko(very eurocentric name /s)who dresses in a way that's obviously not western, comes from a culture where dragons are seen as important and regains his honor as a major part of his character arc(along with several other things but these are the most obvious ones)and came to the conclusion that he wasn't asian. Also, you really mean to tell me you look at a guy who looks like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And go 'ah yes,an all-american white boy' like WHAT???Zuko's not your white e-boy,he's a realistically written abuse victim of color😭Please stop erasing that for the sake of turning him into tropes that suck anyway,i BEG of you

Important question: if we assume that Claire Temple is Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican like Rosario, how does Mexican!Matt relate to her when she fishes him out of a dumpster? I don’t know if her specific heritage is a factor; I'm just kind of curious how you see two Latinx people meeting as opposed to when Matt was broadly Irish.
Omg what an amazing question thank you thank you
If Matt was at all conscious while Santiago and Claire were carrying him up and he heard them speak Spanish, I think Matt would instinctively tell Claire not to call in the cops in Spanish. Then they'd have the following conversation in Spanish until they both simultaneously realize that the other also speaks English.
But, I think Claire would subsciously see Mexican!Matt as someone from her community trying to help their community instead of an well meaning outsider and trust him sooner. And while I won't call canon!Matt a "well-meaning outsider," it's based on first impressions. Claire doesn't know Matt was raised by a single dad in that same neighborhood who struggled to pay the bill and worked his way through law school, Claire just sees some white dude in her dumpster. She's heard the rumors of the guy in a black mask fighting crime but she doesn't know what his motivates are. As far as she knows, it's just some rich dude chasing fame and hoping to be recruited by the Avengers.
I think the show does an good job as showing class solidarity in Hell's Kitchen. The people most vulnerable to violent crime are poor people, not one specific ethnic group. Mrs. Cardenas and her neighbors weren't targeted because they're POC or lack English skills or are predominately undocumented workers, they were targeted because they were poor. Still, even when there is class solidarity in a community, it doesn't erase racism. A poor white person life experience will be different from a poor Latino or Black person.
Speaking from my own community (undocumented Latino) there is a great fear of calling the police due to fear of deportation and the involvement of ICE. Cops in LATAM are notoriously corrupt as well, so it's reasonable to believe that a lot of immigrants are generally distrustful of cops in the states because they're so corrupt in their home country. If you had a traumatic experience in your home country, you're not going to trust cops in the US. Because of this, I feel like the Latino community would be more support of vigilantes like Daredevil simply because they're not associated with law enforcement.
I don't think Matt and Claire's relationship would change too much since I don't think it took Claire too long to realize that canon!Matt was fighting because he cares about his city/the people (and not because of a white savior complex or ego or whatever). I have to assume that Claire had some discussion about race and crime with canon!Matt beforing fully enforcing his vigilante ways. You can't really be anti-crime without being actively anti-racist.
Mexican!Matt relationship with Luke Cage (and Danny because I hc him as Washian in my AU) might be different. Maybe there some unspoken solidarity. Or maybe there just more room for comedy
*Karen, Foggy, Jess and Trish talking in a circle*
Colleen: Are you guys better not start singing Sweet Caroline.
Matt: 🤭
Claire: Don't laugh canelo, you're already on thin ice
Matt: Hey! >:(

tmnt au!! im gonna copy paste the details from my notes so sorry if its messy. it goes over the details for the AU and my Mikey’s backstory. im gonna make Future Mikey’s (aka 22 year old mikey) design later. some of the mental health details for mikey are based off of what i learned in my high school health class with family relations
——————
Breeds:
mikey - (eastern) painted turtle
leo - red bellied short necked turtle
donnie - snake necked turtle
raph - philippine forest turtle
Heights - Tallest to shortest
Donnie (5’8)
Raph (5’5)
Mikey (5’4)
Leo (5’0)
roles are same as 2012
Lgbtq/Pronouns
Leo - Transfem (mtf) - she/her
Raph - Cis - he/him
Donnie - Bisexual - he/him
Mikey - Pansexual + Genderfluid - depends on what day - Mia on girl days Mikey on boy and non bi days - but sometimes likes to be called Max on non bi days
Ages
Mikey (he’s 2 years older cause of dimension X)
Leo
Raph
Donnie
Hobbies/Activities
Mikey - drumming, graffiti/drawing, skateboarding, parkour, cooking, hiking, skitching
Donnie - gardening, inventing, chemistry astrology, rock tumbling
Raph - weight lifting, parkour, people watching, playing with chompy, sparring
Leo - meditating, astronomy, tea making, and i also feel like she’d be into wine tasting when she’s older, and she’d do it with karai as she’d definitely be into it
Others
splinter - bushy tailed woodrat
casey - half latino half italian
april - scottish
Story Context
The 2012 storyline goes as in the show, with some differences. after season 5 though, mikey’s little siblings and april began to drift apart to lead their own lives. they still fought crime together. Mikey took up drinking to ease his nerves when he turned 20 and would hang with Leatherhead, Casey, and Mondo and they’d have fun
they find an abandoned building to make their hang out spot, the area covered in plants and graffiti, and they decorated it with a record player, various vinyls, a slightly broken drum set, and a couple hammocks hanging from the rafters
Then Mikey is recruited by Steam to join the Mixfits (temp name maybe) and he only lets Leatherhead, Mondo and Casey know that hes leaving and no one else
The turtles notice after about two weeks of Mikey being missing that they start to panic
Donnie starts searching through NYC cameras, police scanners, his old mutagen scanner (from season 2) to try and find out if Mikey is still in NY somewhere
Raph gets Mona’s help to keep an eye out in space in case he somehow made it out there. He also uses his pigeons to fly all over the country and report back to him in the case they find him
Leo starts to patrol NYC more often than not. She gets joined by April mostly as they beat up thugs to try and see if they have Mikey
Karai uses her international connections to see if Mikey made it out of the country and is living a life on the run
They all know Casey, Leatherhead and Mondo know something but they can’t get them to talk about it, and if it seemed like Mondo or Casey were about to break, Leatherhead would butt in, growl and leave with the teens (they’d be 19 at the time, a year younger than mikey and the rest of the turtles and april would be 18)
oh and i added this last minute while drawing, but i added a bit of Diabetic Raph into my au. I thought itd be a cool way to represent. i dont have it personally but i have a teammate who does and i had her in mind when drawing. also i think that lea would carry snacks like fruit gummies or nut bars for when raph’s sugar levels get low

Hey, you like Raimundo along with Jack, right? And you're Brazilian. Feel free not to answer this if you don't wanna okay. I just thought you'd be best suited. Like when you commented on the "Rai" nickname.
I'm wondering if you perhaps have any thoughts or headcanons on him, family, hobbies, his inner thoughts, cause I wanna flesh him out for my fic and stuff. I'll give you credit for the ideas of course
even though I'm not that active in the xs fandom currently you've surprisingly come to the right person bc I've rambled a bit about raimundo hcs before to my friends. I had to dig up some discord messages to find all my hcs
I hc raimundo to be white-passing and mixed race, which is like the majority of brazilian ppl tbh. side note: in brazil "race" is defined almost solely by skin color, so like if I left my country it's possible I'd be considered a person of color because of my features, but in brazil I'm considered white. raimundo would be in a similar situation
so in these discord messages past!lucas has said "the only mentions of his background is that he has 8 siblings with a lots of aunts and uncles" and "he mentions that the 'rough' part of rio is his 'element'". now, I, lucas of the present, barely rmr this bc it's been forever ago since I watched xs, but I'm trusting past!lucas on this I think he would never lie to me. based on that I'm a fan of the theory raimundo is an orphan and grew up as part of the lower class. I don't think I ever theorized what the fuck happened to his parents, but I like the idea of him acquiring abandonment issues because of it. since he grew up poor I think he'd also have a lot of survival skills, knowing how to make due with very little, etc.
I actually just thought abt this but it's very uncommon for latino people to only have two names. I myself have four, bc the family names just keep adding on top of each other when u marry instead of being absorbed into the husband's name. so realistically raimundo would probably has at least one other family name
not exactly a hc but something interesting to note about mundo is that he is a good example of something we call a "malandro" in brazil. a malandro is a brazilian concept of a cunning anti-hero who outsmarts, deceives and takes advantage of others, usually for personal gain. describing it like this makes it sound like a bad word, but it has a positive connotation. like culturally being malandro is considered a good thing. we even have a saying that goes like "every day a malandro (in this case a scammer) and a sucker (in this case the one who gets scammed) leave their houses.", implying that if you're not the one taking advantage of others, you're the one being taken advantage of. I don't think this was intentional on the xs writers' part to make raimundo embody these traits so perfectly that r culturally significant to brazil but and I find it interesting.
similar thing to above we also have something called "gambiarra", which is like achieving something through improvised means instead of the "correct" (and usually more expensive) way. also very important to brazilian culture and I think raimundo would be adept in it
#asks#lindendragon#this is all I have. hope that helps#there's a lot I could say about um. languages#like languages he speaks and the way he would speak them but. the thing abt that one is that it's such a complex subject#and it's so often misunderstood how it works by ppl who r monolingual#and it's Reeeeally hard if not outright impossible to accurately write a bilingual character if ur not bilingual urself#and even if you ARE bilingual u have to speak the same languages they do#bc the speech patterns from diff languages r different and they carry over to the newly acquired language but since they're specific#you can't just write them if you don't know what they are#example. in brazil it's really common to use religious expressions like 'oh my god'. like way more common than in other places#I didn't grow up religious AT ALL like I don't know a single prayer#but it's super normal for me to go 'may god hear you' or 'only god knows' or#'holy mary' to express surprise and stuff#english has similar expressions too of course everyone says 'oh my god' and 'holy shit' and 'jesus christ'#but we have MORE of them and we say them MORE often#so bc the way ideas r expressed is unique to every language. if you're not familiar with the language it's near impossible#to accurately write a bilingual character#books and fics where the character randomly speaks another language in the middle of their sentence for no reason#is a pet peeve of mine#bc ok that can happen sometimes but it's so much more complicated than that. there's a lot more things that happen#to the way you express yourself when you're speaking a language that is not your native one#one thing for sure for me who's been fluent in english for about 10 years now . I can say for sure that I fucking hate speaking this langua#I find it restricting. it's inflexible compared to portuguese and I can't express myself as freely as I would like#anw I didn't mean to ramble in the tags abt this HEAHIUWEHAI#thank you for the ask I love raimundo and feel free to ask me more stuff if you have questions#xs#raimundo#raimundo pedrosa#xiaolin showdown

Hola!
I have to preface this by saying I'm not Mexican, I don't speak for Mexicans or any nationality or ethnicity. I can only share what I know.
I would say it would be best to hear from someone who is a native speaker how they feel about it and where they are, I imagine you're going to see different feelings from different areas in Latin America, and probably within Mexico itself.
Followers/Native speakers, what do you think?
In my limited experience, it's yes and no. Yes it can be used pejoratively, but no it isn't always.
It's definitely not the kind of word you'd want to mess up using though
But in the case of Mexico, I wouldn't use that word as I'm very white and also not Mexican so I would be worried I'd come out sounding like an imperialist; but that's me. It's not that the word is always offensive (I believe), but there are people who use it as an insult. When people are using it as an insult in Mexico, it tends to carry a very negative stereotype. When Tenoch Huerta was talking about his experiences, there were people who called him a prieto in a way that implied that he was uppity and didn't know his place
I believe in some areas of Mexico it's less pejorative than others, but it's one of those things that it depends on the region and above all it depends on the intention
If you're trying to err on the side of caution, the correct word that is almost always perfectly fine to say is moreno/a which refers to people with dark skin, dark eyes, or dark hair. It is also the basic word for "brunette", so you may have to specify piel morena "dark skin". But in general, moreno/a is the most universally accepted word that will not get you into trouble
Please also know that moreno/a can refer to any ethnicity, the word negro/a for la gente negra "black people" usually gets used with people of African ancestry. The word prieto/a on the other hand - in Mexico at least - to me makes me think of people of indigenous ancestry with very dark skin, so it's like a different identity. I believe (but am not certain) that in other countries especially in the Caribbean it can be used for people of African descent too, so it's also a regional difference. And I believe even in the US, in a place like Louisiana, prieto/a can often refer to dark-skinned Creole people or black people in general
If you're looking at etymology, prieto/a refers to "black" the color, but as a descriptor of people it's regional who you're talking about
Now onto the things that I know which is more cultural and might give you more info in general...
It can be used offensively, but there are times when it does not mean that - and it can depend on the country, because the word can be used by other countries and can have less of a pejorative meaning
The general word prieto/a means "swarthy", and in some cases it refers to those of indigenous descent or mixed race that have skin that's very dark, and in some contexts they're said to "almost be black", which is from the times of colonialism where indigenous people, African people, and European people were in the same countries/regions/societies. But there was a clear distinction and "castes" based on someone's lineage and racial background
You have to remember that the word mestizo/a meaning "mixed-race" also does mean "mongrel" or "mutt"; and though it traditionally now refers to people of mixed indigenous roots [commonly it's a mix of indigenous and European; it's commonly said that Hernán Cortés the famous conquistador and his mistress La Malinche had a child who is known in history as the first mestizo; his name is usually understood to be Martín Cortés el Mestizo].
The word itself means "mixed together", but for people who value "purity" of blood, mestizo/a is an insult, and it's very antiquated like the castes
Also, when I say "castes" I mean there were specific words for specific mixes of bloodlines [if you're reading older things you'll see indio/a, prieto/a, mulato/a, mestizo/a, zambo/a or sambo/a... not many have totally carried over into modern Spanish except in certain contexts or etymologies, aside from maybe mestizo/a and mulato/a which I think most people recognize]
And within castes, there was colorism and so in many countries, not just Mexico, you'll find there are words for lighter-skinned people and words for darker-skinned people, and sometimes they're used as basic nouns and sometimes they're used as insults. The words for darker-skinned people as insults comes out as saying they're animalistic, savage, stupid, or sometimes uppity. The words for lighter-skinned people as insults come out as something like saying they think they're too good for everyone, they're pretentious, they're not really connected to the culture, and things like that.
Colorism in Latin America is far more present than "racism" as we would see it in the US, where even in the same families or communities, your skin tone might change how others treat you. Colorism in Latin America is very much also linked to classism, with lighter skinned people being treated better and having a better chance to marry upwards, which makes sense when you consider the history of imperialism and slavery in many countries in the Americas not just Latin America
There's even a fairly common expression in Spanish that I did not know was racist when I learned it but it was aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona se queda which means "call it what it is" but it literally means "even though the female monkey wears silk, she's still a monkey"... which I think speaks for itself
...
All of that aside, prieto/a in some Latin American countries means "really really dark", it's considered even darker than regular moreno/a "tan/dark-skin", and the other word that gets used is sometimes trigueño/a which you'd say as like "olive-skinned" or "dark"
Generally it just comes out as "swarthy"
In Spain, the word prieto/a can be "black" as in the color, but it could also be "tight" or "tightly-fitted" since the word comes from apretar "to squeeze" [your general word for "tight" is ajustado/a just FYI]
It doesn't quite have the same cultural connotations in Spain as far as I know, but in countries with colonial history it could, given that darker-skinned people in different countries were and still sometimes are treated a certain way or given certain jobs/roles in society, a word like prieto/a could be used as a way to "remind someone of their place"
(Also note that Prieto can be a surname, so it's not inherently racist but if you said it in the wrong place in the wrong way you might offend some people)
...
As you can probably tell this is one of those big issues with not a lot of good answers, and your experiences will vary.

I was looking at tags and i think you're the first person I've seen to actually suggest maybe Eddie's cultural heritage and upbringing accounts for his sassiness and expressive face and body language, so thank you for that. When everyone just says "it's because he's gay!" (which is pure fanon so far) it feels to me like it's kind of erasing his Latino-ness and personality 🫤
I’m going to approach this with a reality based type of answer, anon, as well as a care free type/wholesome answer. Apologies for the essay. I gave an intro/general context around the subject, my reality type answer (based on canon) and what I know as latino and my genuine answer of what I hope to see ( I call it wholesome answer). And just as a heads up, I disagree with you thinking buddies are trying to “erase” Eddie’s Latino-ness, but more like people tend to just mention/talk about things they know about, everything is answered under the cut and I hope it makes sense sense :)
Majority of the users here are perhaps of mainly European decent and/or just African/Asian only background (I don’t want to say white/black/brown, as it’s just colours that can fit within minority communities as well and not someone’s ethnicity) and majority of tumblr users are not emerged into Latino (Hispanic) culture as much as the next person. Although, there’s no feature in tumblr that could prove my statement regarding everyone’s ethnicity, I’m just speculating as a rule of thumb and things I’ve picked up along the way. The top 5 countries that use tumblr are not even in LATAM, nor Hispanic, and yes, although a majority of users are from the US, and yes there’s plenty of Latino (Hispanics) from there…they’re still minorities. So as rule of thumb, in tumblr? we’re minorities here as well.
Context: as a Latin@, born and raised in Latin America, I would say that Latino men are very affectionate with each other and when do these things majority of the times it means absolutely…nothing regarding their sexual orientation.
Tbh I’d compare Latino men to frat boys, majority love fútbol, hugging excessively, fake kiss, touching, don’t know what personal space is, and being the ultimate smart ass (depending on which regions they’re from lol) and don’t get me started if they’re the youngest of their family bc boy they sure are sassy 😂 and my god can they dance/twerk on anyone 💀
Women are pretty similar with each other like this, but they do portray it differently ofc. We literally hold each other to go shopping (link arms), we kiss each other’s cheeks as greeting, fake kiss when were drunk and that don’t mean anything most of the time.
(A/N:Everyone is just super affectionate and huggy (ugh I’m kinda glad I don’t live there no more, I hate this sometimes 🫠)
And they are just heterosexual people, but then there’s some of them that are not.
End of context.
Now with that in mind, let’s go in with Buck and Eddie. I’ve actually met people similar to Eddie in my life, the one’s that’ve done big gestures for friends, hell my uncle (who’s not blood related to me but is my father’s best friend since forever, is my godfather, and literally was my neighbour growing up bc he wanted to be close to my dad and their friend group. He promised to my dad and mum, if something were to happen to them no matter my age, he will take care of me as a daughter).
Keep in mind, Eddie is also an army man and that level of camaraderie is quite unique as well and now going to a fire house on top of this? When you risk your life with others, it creates this big connection, specially as a single guy and parents that are… certainly special on their own ways (derogatory).
His and Buck’s relationship is quite beautiful and there’s no hint in the show that’s goes into say either of them are anything but heterosexual.
That’s my serious answer.
Now going into my wholesome, care free answer, anon.
It be awesome if they turn their story around into a romantic one, I can see why others will view them that way and tbh? The story is there. If you flip everything I’ve told you about Latino men and what we know about them, and let’s say if Buck or Eddie did this for a woman? It would look like an actual romantic relationship under society eyes. So, I see the double standard here.
I tend to ship those relationships actually, rivals turned to great friends turn to lovers, and also…some of those looks they give each other? Gosh, it may be from what I said earlier, but it could also be something else. And hell, even though neither of them have been in relationships with men before (that we know of) sometimes you catch feelings from someone you didn’t expect out of nowhere yk? And that’ll be cool to see. The chemistry is there.
Sometimes, it’s fun not to take things so seriously. It’s fun to ship characters!
That being said, I genuinely don’t think buddies are trying to erase Eddie’s bg but I think because majority of tumblr users are not of Latino ethnicity they tend to, not forget about Eddie’s Latinoness (like you’re calling it), but will like to relate him to with what they know. And what they do know is being queer (again I’m assuming based on polls I’ve seen and as a rule of thumb, there a big sum of people who are queer and are also buddie fans/tumblr users), and just like everyone in this world, like every minority, they want to be represented :)
Representation for minority groups is always good. There’s not a lot of Hispanic/latino queer representation in TV and if we were to get it, I know that’ll make someone’s life better out there. Maybe not life changing but perhaps tell them that they’re not alone and that everything is and will be fine. Specially for those who unfortunately are not allowed to be their true selves. It gives people hope, that there’s some sense of belonging, out there, and that they can relate and feel included.
Sorry for the long post and thank you for the ask 🫡

As the no. 1 argentumblr user, any tips for someone visiting argentina for the first time?
Love your blog btw
i think i'm nowhere near the top of argentumblr users, but i'm incredibly flattered to be top dog in your heart 💙
and yes, of course, lemme give you some tips! (warning: most of them will probably be food based lmao)
ok, i wouldn't be a good argentine if my first instruction wasn't GO TRY SOME DULCE DE LECHE. seriously, it's the rite of passage, you need to try this sweet caramel-like treat. you can buy it in pots to eat with a spoon if you're feeling extra hedonistic, but if not you can find it in almost every single pastry and cake here, it's a classic.
kinda tied to that last one, you should definitely try an alfajor (especially an alfajor de dulce de leche!). it's kinda like a cookie sandwich type of deal, usually with DDL as the filling.
speaking of food, be aware that your eating habits will probably have a bit of a change of schedule (if you're not latino, that is). we argentines have dinner very late (by usamerican standards), anywhere between 8:30 to 10 or even later. that's why you'll find that most restaurants are open till late at night, usually past midnight on weekends!
'but if i don't have dinner at 6pm i'm gonna starve!' NO because at 5-6pm you'll be having the MERIENDA. that's like an 'afternoon tea' kind of meal, usually involving a coffee or some beverage of your choice and a little something to eat, like pastries, cake, or even grilled sandwiches if you're in the mood for something savory. cafés are booming during those hours, so def something you need to experience if it's not what you're used to in your culture!
enough about eating, and more about travelling. no idea where you're planning to go, but there's something beautiful to see everywhere you go in this country. from the incredible waterfalls of iguazú near the border with paraguay and brazil, to my favorite part of the country, the gorgeous landscapes of the south (snowy peaks during winter, the most breathtaking views during summer), to the bustling city of buenos aires, there's always something to see or do!
buenos aires is an amazing city, and definitely one that never sleeps--literally! if you're into nightlife, be aware that people here don't go to the clubs until about 1-2am (you pregame at someone's house, or at a bar, of course!), and don't leave before 6, 7, even 8am!
just have fun! maybe try to learn a little bit of spanish, if you don't know the language? don't worry if you're not perfect, or even good: just throw in some 'messi's in there and everyone will want to adopt you and make you feel at home!
hope i've tempted you to come and visit, son todos bienvenidos!
