How @yellowocaballero and I Fixed Daredevil by Headcannoning Him as Mexican
When Daredevil first appeared in 1964, he was a second-generation Irish-American from Hell’s Kitchen, a working-class Irish-immigrant neighborhood. In a time where Irish people weren’t viewed as “white” or “real Americas.” They were a part of the oppressed working class, the bottom of the food chain, who had nothing but their religion, the vehicle of their culture from the old world, to keep them together.
Note: Today, the argument that “Irish people aren’t really white” has been co-opted by white supremacists and has often been used in bad faith against POC. I want it to be clear that what is considered “white” is and has always been a political term with no backing in science. Discrimination against the Irish back in the day was tied to anti-Catholic sentiment in predominately Protestant states, such as England, Scotland, and the United States. Naturally, Anti-Catholic discrimination overlaps with nativist, xenophobic, ethnocentric and/or racist sentiments (ie Anti-Italian, Anti-Polish, Hispanicphonia).
Jack Murdock was a poor boxer with no education or prospects who had to exploit his body to provide for Matt. And recognized that not a way to live and thrive, so he pushed Matt into academics for social mobility. Sound familiar?
Tumblr media
At its core, the story of Matt Murdock is an immigrant story. Matt has the immigrant mentality;  immigrants-get-the-job-done type of thing. Gotta hustle and became a lawyer because that’s how he moves up the social and class ladder. And when he does “make it” he chooses to stay and help his neighborhood because he has a cultural connection to it.
This worked in 1964, I don’t know how much it works now.
Hell Kitchen isn’t a rough neighborhood primarily occupied by working-class immigrants, it’s another gentrified hipster hellhole. Irish people and people of Irish ancestry in the United States no long face systemic discrimination.
Therefore, modern-day recontextualizing is to make Matt Mexican.
Technically, Matt can also be from any other Latin American country or Filipino but I lean towards Mexican since a) this is my post go make your own and b) we get the most discrimination from the mainstream media. Yes, a lot of it is because racists use “Mexican” as a catch-all term for anyone from Latin America but still. Trump made his presidential platform by calling Mexicans illegal rapists and druggies.
If Matt was actually the son of Jack Murdock*, an undocumented brown immigrant living in a working-class immigrant/POC neighborhood, it gives him the underdog immigrant arc the character is missing in modern-day adaptations. Matt's core is still the same Matt we know and love, he’s still the son of a boxer, whose dad’s pushed him into succeeding academically, who lost his dad to gang violence, and who is extremely Catholic. Someone who wants to fit into middle-class educated (white) society and feels like he has to suppress the "devil" inside until one day he can’t. He's seeing discrimination and poverty and crime and gentrification tear his neighborhood apart and the police turn their back on it since it's predominantly POC. The law has failed them, he's not going to fail them too.
Meg made the fantastic point that Matt should still be white-passing (and ginger) so he could exist somewhere in between worlds.  And Matt takes advantage of that, as well as his Columbia Law degree to help his community. Matt not using his conditional whiteness and the fancy degree to “escape” his community and instead help it.

Matt casually mentioned that Rand Enterprises was responsible for blinding him and Danny's face just 😲 Then Danny does some digging only to find out that the settlement Matt received was pitiful, like barely enough to cover his medical bills and undergrad.
When Danny asks Matt about it he just says his dad didn't know what he was doing (language barrier) and was scared that they would investigate his immigration status. So Danny feels extremely guilty that his company screwed over a poor immigrant family and omg I'm the problem??? D:
Danny keeps offering Matt a shit ton of money as a sorry-my-company-was-shitty-we'll-do-better payment and Matt rejects it every time (Foggy finds out and calls Matt an idiot for not accepting money from the millionaire)
Danny gets so annoyed that Matt won't just take the money that he buys the building Nelson & Murdock's office is in and makes their monthly rent $4.20

Foggy: I’m back from my psychiatrist appointment.
Matt: mhm.
Foggy: I got diagnosed with ADHD.
Matt:
Foggy: They wrote me a prescription for adderall.
Matt:
Foggy: Maybe you should go. I’ll help you make the appointment. Maybe you can try some anti-depressants.
Matt:
Matt: Look I don’t care that you’re a gringo, just don’t rub it in my face.

Mexican Matt Murdock Headcannons
Yay my meta was well received thank y'all. Here are some hc as a treat :)
Jacobo "Jack" Murdock is from Monterrey 🤠🇲🇽 Super Norteño, he sounds like a cowboy. Has the thickest accent, it embarrass Matt so much
Jack never went to high school and tells Matt to copy how the people on TV talk. They speak "proper" Spanish.
Dad's great great great... granddad was an Irish soldier in the Saint Patrick's Battalion. Hence "Murdock"
He was boxing in Mexico when he met Roscoe Sweeney. Sweeney promised he'd sponsor Jack's work visa and help him immigrate to the US
Sweeney never followed through with the sponsorship. He'll get around to it, don't worry. But as long as Jack's undocumented, he can't box for other promoters/organizers
He would go back to Mexico but he's making more money here than he could back home. Plus he met someone.
Margarita "Maggie" was training to be a nun until she saw him
Baby Mateo Murdock takes after her. He has her eyes, red hair, and pale skin Maggie worries will burn in the sun.
(TW Intrusive thoughts/Post Partrum Psychosis) Maggie worries a lot. About Matty choking on his blanket, about SIDS, about how she betrayed God, about how her child carries her sin, about how the devil possessed her husband, how maybe she should borrow Mario's car with Matty in the back seat so she can drive them off a bridge so at least one of them gets the change to go to Heaven
She nearly kills him.
Jack calls Father Lantom and their marriage is annulled. Maggie leaves to get help and doesn't come back.
Jack still misses her. Matt never knows.
So many nicknames: Matty, Canelo (Cinnamon), Chiltepin (Small Peper), Rojo (Red), Tomatillo (Tomato), Chapulín Colorado, Diablito (little devil), Irlandés (Irish. Later takes a 23andme and finds out he's only 5% Irish)
Jack doesn't speak a lot of English. Matt becomes his personal translator by 1st grade
After the accident, Matt even has to translate what the nurse says for his dad. There's an interpreter when the doctors need to talk to his dad. It hurt hearing about his diagnosis and treatment from the doctor. It hurts all over hearing the interpreter repeat it to his dad.
Matt feels so guilty he can't help translate documents for his dad anymore.
His dad's funeral is the first time Matt meets his extended family. One of his Tia offers to take him in but that would mean leaving New York/the USA and going to Mexico.
He says no. New York is his home.
Sister Maggie is one of the few nuns who speak Spanish. And the only one who will read him poetry. She reads him Jose Marti, Juana Inés de la Cruz, Miguel de Cervantes. Matt likes her. Even if she's strict and doesn't tolerate his sass.
Nina Rosario from In The Heights Kinnie
Almost cried the first time he heard "Breathe," no song has even spoken to him more
NINA: They are all counting on me to succeed I am the one who made it out The one who always made the grade But maybe I should've just stayed home... When I was a child I stayed wide awake, climbed to the highest place, on every fire escape, restless to climb .... I got every scholarship Saved every dollar The first to go to college
Takes a 3000-level Spanish for Elektra. Should have thought this through, Elektra speaks it with an Ethpañol accent. Cringe.
But the class is interesting. So he takes another. And another. And soon enough he has enough credits for a Spanish language and literature major.
Eavesdrops on a lot of conversations. Both because no one assumes he knows Spanish and because of his senses
Foggy: Do you have health insurance?
Matt: of course *pulls out his Vick's Vaporub*
Can't eat spicy food. This face turns as red as his hair :( The other Defenders/HFH tease him for this
Dislikes Spanglish because text to speech/screenreaders don’t recognize it
Calls La Virgen de Guadalupe Mom
Drinks Corona :D

Important question: if we assume that Claire Temple is Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican like Rosario, how does Mexican!Matt relate to her when she fishes him out of a dumpster? I don’t know if her specific heritage is a factor; I'm just kind of curious how you see two Latinx people meeting as opposed to when Matt was broadly Irish.
Omg what an amazing question thank you thank you
If Matt was at all conscious while Santiago and Claire were carrying him up and he heard them speak Spanish, I think Matt would instinctively tell Claire not to call in the cops in Spanish. Then they'd have the following conversation in Spanish until they both simultaneously realize that the other also speaks English.
But, I think Claire would subsciously see Mexican!Matt as someone from her community trying to help their community instead of an well meaning outsider and trust him sooner. And while I won't call canon!Matt a "well-meaning outsider," it's based on first impressions. Claire doesn't know Matt was raised by a single dad in that same neighborhood who struggled to pay the bill and worked his way through law school, Claire just sees some white dude in her dumpster. She's heard the rumors of the guy in a black mask fighting crime but she doesn't know what his motivates are. As far as she knows, it's just some rich dude chasing fame and hoping to be recruited by the Avengers.
I think the show does an good job as showing class solidarity in Hell's Kitchen. The people most vulnerable to violent crime are poor people, not one specific ethnic group. Mrs. Cardenas and her neighbors weren't targeted because they're POC or lack English skills or are predominately undocumented workers, they were targeted because they were poor. Still, even when there is class solidarity in a community, it doesn't erase racism. A poor white person life experience will be different from a poor Latino or Black person.
Speaking from my own community (undocumented Latino) there is a great fear of calling the police due to fear of deportation and the involvement of ICE. Cops in LATAM are notoriously corrupt as well, so it's reasonable to believe that a lot of immigrants are generally distrustful of cops in the states because they're so corrupt in their home country. If you had a traumatic experience in your home country, you're not going to trust cops in the US. Because of this, I feel like the Latino community would be more support of vigilantes like Daredevil simply because they're not associated with law enforcement.
I don't think Matt and Claire's relationship would change too much since I don't think it took Claire too long to realize that canon!Matt was fighting because he cares about his city/the people (and not because of a white savior complex or ego or whatever). I have to assume that Claire had some discussion about race and crime with canon!Matt beforing fully enforcing his vigilante ways. You can't really be anti-crime without being actively anti-racist.
Mexican!Matt relationship with Luke Cage (and Danny because I hc him as Washian in my AU) might be different. Maybe there some unspoken solidarity. Or maybe there just more room for comedy
*Karen, Foggy, Jess and Trish talking in a circle*
Colleen: Are you guys better not start singing Sweet Caroline.
Matt: 🤭
Claire: Don't laugh canelo, you're already on thin ice
Matt: Hey! >:(

New Heroes for Hire/Defenders team directly copied inspired by @yellowocaballero's MK HFH AU: Mexican!Matt, Wasian!Danny, Jess(token white girl, we love her :) ), Luke, Claire, Colleen and Misty in lesbian in love, Elektra but they spray her with water every time she tries to kill a dude, Moon Knight but mostly Jake, Layla the contractor, and Miles the intern. More diversity than a college pamphlet.
They're are all in a polycule (not Miles). Is it a polycule or is the team just affectionate and open about their feelings?? No one knows. Jake's not involved with those freaks, he has a hot wife. Matt thinks the polycule is just a joke to fuck with Jake (and Miles). Danny makes them all matching bracelets.
Peter used to be an intern and thought the whole polycule-thing was super weird but now he's an adult and dating MJ and Felicia so 🤷

Charlie Cox will always have a soft spot in my heart because it was my introduction to Daredevil and I'm beyond happy he got invited back by Disney but!!!! Matt should be Latino. There are Matt variants in the comics who are Latine but gosh darn it I just want normal Matt with the same old backstory to be Mexican. I don't actually want to write the comics I just want to ability to whisper in the authors hear about my ideas XD

Mexican!Matt?
So when I was little, we'd spend four hours to go drive to see my Grandma.
We always had car snacks on the way there. Once we made the mistake of stopping for food because the trip was taking longer than normal and it was getting late. When we got there, Grandma asked if we were hungry. We said no.
You do not tell Abuela that you are not hungry. She had a whole pot roast with sides ready for us. We had not eaten 'real food' so therefore we could not possibly be full.
I bet Mexian!Matt knows how to cook but doesn't have the time or patience for it. But he also probably keeps a freezer full of tamales for emergency.
He also keeps Vicks vapor rub in the medicine cabinet, even though it overwhelms his senses unless he has a cold. And there's one specific type of candy that gives him flashbacks to five year old Matt sitting on his Abuela's plastic covered couch watching telenovellas. You know the kind. It's salty and sour and fruity.
I don't think Matt had any family (apart from his dad) in New York but I'm sure he got adopted by a neighbor abuelita. And maybe she invites him over for dinner and gives him candy. Jack's kid is too skinny, gotta make sure he's eating. Oh, you already ate? What did you eat? Chips? That's not real food, eat this.
What if Foggy helps Matt make the emergency tamales? Matt casually mentions that he's going to spend all weekend making tamales since it's a lot of work, so Foggy offers to help. And for the first 10 minutes, Matt is so happy because his best friend is helping him make his traditional food and for the rest of the time Matt is trying to hide his irritation because Foggy you're doing is wrong 😤
When they meet Karen, she also comes to help and it becomes a Christmas tradition to make them. They make some extra to give to Jess, Danny, Luke, and Peter. Matt totally forgets that Peter doesn't eat pork and feels so guilty he goes back just to make more tamales without any pork.
