Thinking about Effie and Zebulon losing their congregation because they performed an interracial marriage in 1920s Arkansas against the law and how we see them stand behind what they did while also seeing the pain that caused. “The failings of our community are our own.” And Gloria, the only POC in the joint, being the only person who knew that interracial marriages were not legalised across the country until mid-60s, because of course Leif and Ava find it appalling but it wasn’t something they ever had to stop to think about before. Oof.

This podcast has surprised me time and again by how human and thoughtful it is and also how expertly they reveal backstories bit by bit. It absolutely deserves to be a fandom darling.

mary and lily, who constantly show up at her flat and let themselves in with their spare keys, are standing over her. "marlene!" lily sings out. "get up already, babe."

"sweets, you're such a drag sometimes," mary sighs. "what's wrong with you?"

"i screwed up my date," marlene sighs. "she totally thinks i'm a freak." mary and lily sit down on her bed with her, not caring that she's wearing a sports bra and underwear and no real clothes.

"she doesn't think that."

"i dunno what that girl was on," marlene says and shakes her head. mary strips off her sweater, apparently dying of heatstroke in marlene's flat.

"tell us about it," lily replies, getting comfy. mary pulls a full bottle of some sort of alcohol out of her tote bag.

"i told her i was a cancer and she fucking burst into tears!" marlene starts and the two others start laughing. "oh my god, she was so annoying." they spend all night drowning themselves in alcohol, mary has some clothes to show off and models them all for them, they bake muffins. they're terrible.

in the end, they end up on the balcony, burrowed in their winter coats against the freezing weather. they lay half on top of each other, giggling and whispering with each other.

in the end, marlene forgets about her shitty date and she has the best night of her life with her ridiculous best friends.
