The problems with the DC fandom's potrayals of Jason Todd

Hi,hello!!You might recognize me as that one Jason selfshipper who's self-insert is a pink Super that's always making shitposts and drawing parallels because autism go brrrr.If not,then that's a pretty good summary of my blog for newcomers!But today,i'm here to talk about a serious matter involving Jason and the bad depictions of him by fanon.As an autistic person who has the Batfam as one of his biggest spinterest,it's incredibly important and personal to me that Jason be done justice not just by canon but by the fans too.Which as you probably guessed by the title,dosen't happen very often.And i want to get into why and how that is!This ride is gonna be a bit long so buckle in

So to start off,the most blantant one:Making him into a misogynist who treats women badly based off their gender.Jason is an asshole and edgelord but that does not equal hating women and he's proven that many times.Has he been rude to characters who're girls?Yes but not once has he used their gender against them.You don't see him throwing around 'bitch' or the sexual kinds of insults(such as 'whore')towards them and that's because it's not a part of his character and never has been.When he was Robin,he showed such strong respect towards girls of all ages to the point where it was all but outright stated he was willing to push a man off a roof because he SA'd a woman and even as Red Hood,he never looses that as seen by his treatment of Talia and his female love interests.The idea that a guy being 'manly' means he must also be sexist perpetuates toxic masculinity and it's messed up to erase male characters being feminists(for lack of a better term)because you buy in it

To continue off that,the headcanon that he's a horndog who sleeps around is also a direct contradiction of his character.Jason is not actively interested in a relathionship for himself and he has shown this across pretty much all his incarnations in his actions and at least in the case of Rhato,his words too:

And the pervert sense of humor?Straight up made up out of thin air by non-comic readers.I get it,he's very hot,i agree with that very much,but assuming he must also be a sleaze because of it is making extremely weird assumptions.Attractive dosen't mean overly sexual and i don't think i have to explain why it's bad to change him being a total prude to a player because you believe it does,even more so since it's crystal clear that his reluctance towards intimacy is a trauma response.I get that people have different coping mechanisms but they're not interchangable and you're erasing rep by switching Jason's for another one

There's also how he barely drinks alcohol-there's actually a gag of him as Robin where he orders milk at a bar-and hasn't been shown to particularly be into smoking but guess what two of the most popular things he's shown enjoying in fanon are.Ironically enough,he's a huge literature nerd who's unashamed of and shows off his love for books and was implied to be into theater as a kid and guess what again?Those get stolen and given to Tim instead(*Flashbacks to Btas*).It's been shown that in the DC verse,it takes smarts to be a succesful vigilante and/or villain(the former of which Jason is and the latter of which he was for a long ass time)and he's ABSOLUTELY not just getting by on luck.Almost the entierty of Utrh wouldn't have happened if he wasn't a genius.Is he brutal?Yes,so much.Is he a brute?Not in the slightest bit

All this culminates in a particular and very big ick i have when it comes to fanon Jason:How all this combined with the latino hc for him turns him into a walking stereotype of my people.Latino Jason means the world to me,especially if he's also black,and it breaks my heart that gringos have sullied it with their lack of research and fetishization of him but that'll never stop me from reclaiming it and making it into the beautiful rep i know it is!Back on track:This point is something that under no circumstances should be let slide,it's racist fullstop.Reactions to it should only be either 1)attempting to educate or 2)blocking.If you disagree,please just do the blocking towards me

And the last thing i'd like to adress is his relathionship with Bruce:Jason does NOT have 'd*ddy issues',he has TRAUMA.It's one thing to joke about him wanting Bruce to love him so bad he became evil and being petty asf towards him,i actually love that type of humor,and it's a whole nother to be an ableist jackass because Jason wasn't all sunshine and rainbows when he found out his dad didn't avenge his death at FIFTEEN by a guy who does shit like domestic abuse and is a deviant who's not afraid to act on his thoughts.Don't take this as Bruce bashing,as i am aware that this is the fault of the writers bigotry and hating on him squicks me out

What i'm trying to say is:Jason Todd is a much better character than he's given credit for and i hope this helps him get it,even if just a little bit

(by the way its less LITERALLY the producers, and more heavily fictionalized versions of them with exaggerated personalities. because it being literally the producers would be kinda weird)

I think it's about time to mention that these in fact WERE meant for an AU/potential webcomic with a very similar premise, with vocaloids as a semi-eldrich-horrory supporting cast and seeing yall react to that one post so positively made me very confident in this idea!! As long as we agree that these are characters not the direct representations of producers themselves okay Moreover I've had a blog lying around dedicated to this specific idea, but it's been just a lore dump regarding vocaloids themselves. But if enough people are interested I'll probably post stuff like designs or shitpost sketches and.... maybe something else?? Whatever I'll come up with will be at @project-koe And again seeing your reblogs and anonymous messages is very validating because vocalo-p's specifically have been a special interest of mine for a good while and I'm overjoyed to see it resonate with ppl aaaa <3 ty all!!!

If you are like me, that is chronically sad, cynical, into weird media and maybe going through a rough patch, I beg of you CONSUME SOME WHOLESOME, EVEN SILLY MEDIA.

Low-effort youtube shitposts, children’s media, anime you liked when you were 14. Whatever inspires a laugh or gives you a little bit of that despicable emotion of hope you remember from somewhere in the distant past.

I have a tendency to fall into fucked-up, nihilistic and thoroughly miserable stories when I am feeling bad. They seem like the only thing that gets it. I suspect this practice lets me engage with my emotions and fears with a degree of separation. But it also seeps into how I view the world. When my mindset is dominated by darkness and hopelessness, even if I’m processing those feelings by going deeper into them, they are not questioned. They just are.

So, while it’s important and meaningful to feel sad in a productive way, it’s also important to feel happy in any way, even artificially. No one has ever been fixed by ‘thinking positively’, but positive emotional responses are as much part of getting better as untangling negative ones. Store bought hope is fine if you can’t grow it at home. I know it can feel fake and naive, but life isn’t always bleak. Sometimes it’s silly and hopeful.

We use media to examine specific parts of our mind for our own benefit. Not every narrative needs to be a nuanced exploration of ethics or pay tithe to worst things people can do to each other. There is no tradeoff between quality and optimism in art and even the simplest, most reductive piece of art exists with a purpose if it made you feel better. We have a tendency to assign added value to gloomy crap with no good reason. Angst and blind melancholy are the easiest emotions to evoke, and that’s why edgelords rely on them and insists it elevates their art. It’s a slippery slope and not any better than crying over cartoons at 3am because they made you feel hope again.

I know it’s not instinctual for everyone to stare deeper into the void in response to bad stuff, but it is for me and I am sure it is for some others as well. So, I’m writing this for those folks and maybe myself as a reminder.

Go watch or read something fun for a bit. I promise it will be worth it.

ON THE GRADUATION OF HOLOLIVE 4TH GENERATION’S KIRYU COCO

Some context is going to be required here.

Hololive is a group of virtual youtubers, or vtubers. This group is run by Cover Corporation, a talent management agency, and is organized along the lines of a Japanese idol group, meaning that new members are added in batches (referred to as “generations“ here but generally called “classes.”) There are between five and seven generations in Hololive’s Japanese branch, depending on how you count, two in their Indonesian branch, and one in their English branch. There was also a Chinese branch, at one point, but they all graduated.

Graduation: when a real life idol reaches a certain age (23 or so, usually) and is deemed too old for the business, she “graduates” from her group, with great ceremony, and has to figure out what to do with the rest of her life. But virtual idols don’t age. They could go on forever, or at least as long as the person playing them can do the voice. Nonetheless, graduations do happen - one member of the fifth generation resigned shortly after her introduction following a doxxing and harassment campaign, and the Chinese branch quit en masse after one of the Japanese Hololive members referred to Taiwan as a country. That member was Kiryu Coco: Yakuza, drug dealer, guerilla filmmaker, edgelord, bilingual comedian, host of the weekly Reddit Shitpost Review, and, fundamentally, an anime dragon woman with enormous tits. (Her horns are real, but her tail, she lets us know, is a plug-in.)

Coco announced her graduation yesterday. She will be the first established member to leave the group. It came as a shock; sure, there had been a difficult period following the Taiwan incident when mainland Chinese trolls were invading her streams and spamming her chat (the community referred to these people as “antis”, hilariously,) but that had blown over, for the most part. We knew there had been conflicts between her and Cover management over some of her more risque material - she was constantly pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable for an “idol”, or, frankly, for a female public figure of any kind in Japan - but she was so integral to the community, building bridges between the generations and the different language groups, refining and amplifying and in some cases inventing the running gags that were integral to the identities of so many of her colleagues, and, in general, working more hours than a human being should to make Hololive a success. Burnout is of course a big deal with streamers but Coco so rarely let her fatigue come across, and it’s not even clear that that’s what happened here. Coco is, most likely, going on to bigger and better things.

Except “Coco” isn’t.

A Hololive vtuber is a weird gestalt entity, composed in part of the affectations and backstory and design created for the character and in part of the personality, real life and real history of the performer. We know that Coco’s real mother is sick and had to go back to America for treatment, because Coco tells us what’s going in her life, except she says that Mama Dragon has to go far across the sea and Papa Dragon is staying home; this blending of reality and kayfabe (a term in general use among english-speaking Hololive fans, tellingly) reminds me of pro wrestling, where the best characters and storylines make use of real personalities and events and rivalries to give them their charge. In Hololive as in WWE the company owns the character, but if a performer leaves WWE we know we will probably see them again soon enough. They’ll be under a new name, but it’ll be the same person with the same face and the same moves and the same personality - maybe tweaked a little to avoid a lawsuit, but close. With vtubers, though, it’s a different story. There is a person called Kiryu Coco with a voice and a face and friends and a history and on July 1st there will be a big farewell concert streamed live over the internet and then that person will cease to exist.

And that’s weird, right? I had enough of a parasocial relationship with this fake person that when I went to my discord to be sad about her imminent departure I had legitimately forgotten that she was a big titty anime dragon lady and that I was going to get roasted the second someone googled her. She’s just Coco in my brain, and I know that the woman who performs that role isn’t actually about to be erased but part of me insists that I’m awaiting an execution. That part of me - the part that had me writing “but what if cartoons were real and had feelings though” stories when I was in high school - is doing backflips about it. I can’t figure out the meta here. Does this entity have a soul? Does it live in a certain streamer who also goes by KSON, or somewhere else? Will it haunt the giant statue of Cover CEO Motoaki “Yagoo” Tanigo looking sad that Coco built in Minecraft as her last great contribution before her departure?

Whatever she is and wherever she’s off to, she will be missed, and I will hear her cheerful “good morning, motherfuckers!” on the wind.

ROOT Reformed

Okay so you know how Yamato, Sai, and Shin were in ROOT? Well, what if Yamato had seen the two children, one so sick he was throwing up blood and the other so antisocial he kept getting bullied because of how he talked, and adopted them? The Dad!Yamato, and Child!Shin and Sai headcanons that nobody asked for coming right up :)

When Yamato first met Shin and Sai, Sai was hiding behind Shin because he accidentally insulted someone and got punched. Shin was trying to comfort the small boy and protect him.

Yamato then decided to adopt them both, he scared away the bullies and helped Sai cover his black eye, which looked worse than it was since Sai’s skin is so pale and markable.

When Yamato learned that Danzo was sending the two small children on B-Rank missions as PAWNS and they just barely survive all their missions, he personally whooped Danzo’s ass

Yamato was put in charge of Shin and Sai and the two children warmed up to him quickly

Yamato chasing Shin around the room trying to get him to eat vegetables

What your average person who’s favourite Blazblue character is (insert char here) is like:

(Read-more because this is a looooong post)

Ragna: 50% chance of being a Blazblue giga-normie who’s only played cross tag battle and who’s only knowledge of Blazblue comes from abridged Alter Memory parodies on youtube. Other 50% chance of actually being a giant fan of the series since the old days and a chill guy.

Jin: Almost certainly a giant edgelord and if you’re unlucky, a big-time role-player who’s cleaned out the RagJin tag on AO3 and Fanfiction.net dozens of times. Approach with great caution.

Noel: Twitter resident who’s feed is full of pictures of Noel and whatever other half-obscure anime girls they’re obsessed with. Overuses the word ‘waifu’ and likely has a fightstick with a Noel decal on it.

Mu-12: Same as above except with a slight added hint of edge.

Rachel: Similar energy to the Noel fan except probably an even bigger weirdo. Has gotten into countless twitter wars that probably go something like “but she’s actually a thousand years old!!!”.

Taokaka: 50/50 chance of either being a horny furry who doesn’t even know what game Taokaka is from, or a really chill person who likes Tao for her cute and funny personality. Even if they’re the second type, they probably don’t know or care much about the ridiculous story of the series.

Iron Tager: Giant shitposter who’s only here to do epic funnies on netplay as Tager. Spends at least 50x more time labbing obscure tech and combos than actually playing the game. Likely a hardened and punished war veteran of Blazblue if they actually played Tager back in the Calamity Trigger days.

Litchi: An enormous tournament tryhard who’s success in locals half comes from the huge amount of time they spend on the game, and half from the deafening clickety-clackety-ass noise their custom fightstick makes that tilts the opponent to hell and back.

Arakune: They remember what was taken from them since the days of CT and CS. They will still beat your ass anyway. Extremely powerful person you must treat with caution and respect.

Bang: Absolute legend with god-tier taste. Bang fans are the chads of the Blazblue fandom that while small in number, are great in heart and passion. On a side-note, they probably kinda suck at the game.

Carl: An obscure person, but one who knows a lot about the series and only wanted the best for Carl. 50/50 chance of either being a god at the game, or being unable to do a 236 input.

Relius: A bastard but in a sexy way that makes you kind of respect them. They probably just like his aesthetic and playstyle, but that doesn’t stop them from making jokes about his robot wife.

Hakumen: Probably only ever got into Blazblue in the first place because Hakumen looked badass and they wanted to main him. Knows Hakumen’s entire monologue off by heart; doesn’t know when to stop pressing drive.

Nu-13: Highly volatile and dangerous being. I strongly recommend you stay as far away as possible from them, because whether they’re an enormously horny weeb or someone maniacal enough to main her, nothing good can come of interaction with this perilous partitioner.

Lambda-11: An actually normal person unlike the Nu fan, they’re just here for the cute girls and a good time. That said, if they main her then prepare to get your ass beat just the same as if you versed the Nu main.

Tsubaki: An underdog of the Blazblue fandom, they understand and appreciate greatness where the rabble of the fandom cannot. Probably sick to death of everyone saying Tsubaki sucks and is annoying. Probably can’t play Tsubaki.

Izayoi: Same as above except they’re also a giant tryhard. Netplay monster that messages “anyone wanna play cf?” on discord except no one replies because they play Izayoi and have a 80%+ winrate.

Makoto: They’re like the Taokaka fan except they actually play the game. Some are weird, but most are cool people with good taste.

Platinum: Doesn’t know what a Blazblue is; just here because Platinum is cute and looks like a magical girl. Either into Pretty Cure, Madoka, or both.

Bullet: Horny. They’re like in a middle-ground of shamelessness between the Hazama and Terumi fan, except their twitter feed can’t be flooded with Bullet images like the Noel fan’s because no one else’s favourite character is Bullet.

Azrael: Extremely powerful and kingly aura, the Azrael fan strikes a primal fear into my heart that no other person can. Whether or not they’re horny for Azrael doesn’t matter, their energy is mighty enough to make all respect them.

Izanami: No one calls Izanami their favourite character unless they’re REALLY good at her, so if you see the Izanami fan, watch out. Like the Izayoi fan, no one wants to verse them because they’ll get their ass beaten 100-0 and will get a freshly filled salt shaker while they’re at it.

Es: Have they actually played Xblaze? Do they really like Es for non-superficial reasons? Could it be that their love of Es is one deeply rooted in her characterisation and storyline? Yeah probably not.

Mai: See above but replace “played Xblaze” with “read Remix Heart”.

Hibiki: Do not be fooled. Although the Hibiki fan seems innocent enough, that maybe they just like his design and playstyle, these people are horny as HELL. Bonus points if there’s a clear pattern of them being horny for twinks in other media too.

Naoto: Unlike Es and Mai, this person most likely actually DOES know something about Bloodedge Experience and is a big Naoto fan because of it. However they’re sad because no one else does and when they say something like “Spinner Superior is such a cool villain” everyone else says “Who?”.

Something Awful's "Fuck You and Die" forum went from freewheeling jokesters to Nazi shitposters, so it's dead

Long before 4chan and other anything-goes forums existed, every major online community had a similar community: the Well had its "weird" forum, Usenet had alt.syntax.tactical (among others), and Something Awful had the "Fuck You and Die" forum, where people were funny, mean, obscene, and gross, sometimes all at once.

But "edgy" has a tendency to become "edgelord" and over the years, Something Awful's FYAD forum has seen a steady erosion of the playfully gross and fun posts, with Nazi shitposters coming to dominate the community, filling it with white supremacist memes, attacks on sexual and racial minorities, and other kinds of hateful, threatening behavior.

Something Awful founder Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka discovered that the moderators on the forum were scared to enforce their own rules, worried that they'd come in for doxing and harassment. After multiple ultimatums and a one-week shutdown, Lowtax has finally killed FYAD, telling Motherboard that "whenever you ban an ironic Nazi, suddenly they become actual Nazis."

Okay so to take a break from my stoner ass making shitposts in the bumbleby tag, just wanted to bring up something I’ve noticed

Whiny trash dudes who are Adam stans always say the same thing, “fuck you yang,” or some version of it. “Adam should’ve killed her,” and other similar shit. And yeah, some of it is just people being trolls and edgelords to get a reaction but what really gets me?

They never really say things like that about Blake.

It’s weird. In their bizarro projecting of themselves into Adam, in their weird self insert fantasy, they’ve turned Blake into a *prize* for Adam/Sun/Whatever cishet male character they can project themselves onto. Something they deserve.

While more than a few of them will admit that Yang’s hot or waifu material, it’s not really to the level they put Blake. And I always wondered why

Could it be they’re also subconsciously picking up on the fact that Yang has shown no interest in men aside from a joke? Shes perceived as unobtainable at best, and a romantic rival for their self-inserts at worst.

They perceive Blake as a prize, something to be possessed and won, easily molded and obtainable to whoever they’re projecting onto at the time.

Isn’t that more than a little terrifying?

I’m dealing with the same level of frustration and insecurity that I’m always dealing with, but my reblogging a bunch of depressing posts all in a row was just me going back through my tag and having a little laugh at myself because boy I guess this is just my brand of humor. also the thing about taking time away from social media, tumblr in particular, is that I don’t really have another social outlet? I realize how sad that sounds, but I’m just not in a place where I have the energy to be like, A Person In The Real World who has a social life or whatever (plus all my friends live elsewhere and fuck if I’m gonna learn how to be social in the real world as an old woman), so me being on tumblr is actually a little better for my mental health. it’s definitely not great in some ways, but if I take a break from social media, that means that I just don’t talk to people, which is sometimes necessary! and I have been feeling the “diminish and go into the west” vibes for a while. so I might do that at some point in the near future, especially if I can screw my brain on right and actually fucking write something.

if you meant break from writing well don’t worry about that I have written almost nothing in the past two months lol. but! this is still very sweet of you and I appreciate it. no need to worry. I’m just going through a dry spell with the writing and when that happens it tends to bleed into every other aspect of my life, so I just get kinda bummed and frustrated at not being able to do all the things I want to do. and it’s hard to articulate that because there is literally no part of me that wants to like, stop trying to write? I understand that creativity is a cyclical thing and it waxes and wanes but, I’m trying to do this as a career one day, and I kind of need to figure out how to write something when I’m not Feeling Inspired. like I need to build up some grit and stamina and I think my writerly brain is just pouting because she’s not getting what she used to get. so I’m just kind of stuck in this nebulous place of feeling fatigue for a thing I have not done in months. it’s gr8.

so I am not big D depressed (although I have that and it is a separate thing I’m working on with the lovely help of meds, sweet sweet meds), just little d depressed, or like, melancholic. still haven’t figured out how to separate my self-worth from the things that I produce lol, and when I just stop producing, it kind of feels like I just cease to exist. which is very healthy and totally not something to examine. :/ god this is the world’s longest response but I’m Good and Don’t Worry if you see me on this hellsite it means I am in a good enough place to vocalize what’s going on in my head. and right now it’s just a lot of eeyore-ing and sheith, which is what this blog has become in the past few months and I’ve apologized for that before so I won’t again because honestly this is where I live now and this is what I can do. indulge my inner edgelord and get concerningly emotional about sheith. so no worries! your neighborhood charlie is just a little frustrated and taking it out on all of your lovely eyeballs. also, I completely understand needing to unfollow or mute or blacklist that tag (#charlie aesthetic is where most of those Depression Memes go to languish). your dash should be your happy place and if you can’t deal with me dealing with my shit, I completely understand

I had a sort of bad start on Tumblr. There’s a really long story, but to cut it short, I was a major political edgelord who associated with both fascists and tankies, and I built a really bad reputation for myself. I was a major Soviet apologist and said a lot of mean shit about Poland in particular (I think that’s probably part of why I took an interest in Polish history years later- perhaps to make up for things I did and said).

I eventually became disillusioned with everything I was passionate about, probably prompted by the fact that I lost a very important friend as a result of my behavior. I decided history was an unhealthy interest for the time being, and I just dropped it entirely and became active in the Kingdom Hearts fandom to start building a new reputation and improving as a person. That was in 2014.

2014-2015 was overall just a weird, but good, time on Tumblr. I challenged things I once stood for. Like, I used to be an anti-SJW, so I started getting into social justice- very specifically discourse related to mental illness. I also got more involved in the wildlife/animal community and got really into animal welfare issues, responsible exotic pet ownership, etc.

I only got back into history stuff in late 2016. But over this past year I think I’ve been building a negative reputation for myself yet again- I’m just becoming increasingly obnoxious and I can’t even act normally about my interests anymore (90% of my “historical” content nowadays is just UPA shitposting and man it really does not make me look good, as someone who used to be Tumblr’s only source of information on anything relating to the Volhynia genocide) and this ~*obnoxious edgy horny shitposter lel XDD*~ behavior has basically just became my entire personality at this point and that’s not healthy.

I always consider taking a break from Tumblr in general but it just never works. I probably need it though. Using this website is just a stressful experience nowadays.

Thank you for the ask!!! I have a hard time finding things I like about myself, but I’ll do my best o7

1. Honesty. My honesty is one of the character traits I’m most proud of. I am almost brutally honest, though I do try to be nice about it, and you can always count on me to mean what I say. I’m also honest to myself.

2. Height. It’s kind of a weird thing, but I like being pretty tall and on the heavier side. I feel big and tough, like I can protect others.

3. Writing. It frustrates me almost as much as it makes me happy, but I’m a little proud that I’ve managed to write some stuff. I cringe at a lot of stuff I write, but I also genuinely enjoy how shitty some of it is. There’s so much joy at writing complete shitposts and laughing the entire time.

4. Reading people. I’m really good at figuring out what people are thinking and why they’re acting a certain way-it really helps me treat them better. Plus it helps me understand myself better. Plus it’s fun!

5. Excitability! There are a ton of things that make me happy, and I like that I can find a lot of pure joy out of someone merely wearing a yellow I like, or the smell of rain. Not to mention I’m very grateful for anything I receive.
