TL;DR: HNL was studying how to give human subjects electromagnetic, most specifically visible light based, powers in order to bend space-time for their needs.

I’m going to try and condense this as much as I can because considering electromagnetism as a major force in ST (pun intended) opens up so many potential areas of analysis that can only be a brief cover of without turning into multiple essays.

Let’s go over the electromagnetic spectrum:

I hope you might already be recognizing some symbols we see often in Stranger Things, especially if you’ve been following the BTS and some location and set leaks from Season 5.

The electromagnetic spectrum encompasses the different frequencies of electromagnetic radiation - waves of energy that travel at the speed of light (and produce visible light to us at certain frequencies). You’ve probably heard of most of these, including cancer-causing gamma rays and x-rays, the visible light spectrum (the rainbow), microwaves, and radio waves.

In S5, we have the radio station as a main location for the characters. They’re also driving around in the radio station’s van, which has an image of a hawk emitting a rainbow (visible light radiation). Steve’s car also has a massive antenna on top of it. My first thoughts were that the team was trying to keep in contact with Max in hopes of her being able to hear them in her coma, considering she has a radio near her bedside. While that still may be a reason, I think the characters may have come to realize how important electromagnetic fields could be in their fight against Vecna (this where leader of the AV Club also focused on electromagnetic objects Scott Clarke may make his triumphant return).

Now to pivot onto why electromagnetism is so important to the lore of ST:

What the scientists in Hawkins Lab are likely studying is a way for human brains to produce or manipulate certain types of electromagnetic waves through telepathy. Most obviously this is seen by them having the kids try to manipulate and turn on a circle of light bulbs. Our brains actually already produce electromagnetic waves, but at a very slow frequency. The scientists are constantly measuring brain waves while conducting these experiments. We even get full shots of El’s brain waves during NINA, for example. We also see similar shots in S2 while Will is in the HNL.

You can also observe that the Hawkins National Laboratory has absolutely massive satellite dishes on it’s rooftop; ones that do not exist on the real life building but are added in post because they pose some sort of significance. Nudge, it’s because they are transmitting and receiving massive amounts of electromagnetic waves.

Why are they studying electromagnetic waves then?

They are studying electromagnetic waves because they are a method in which time travel can theoretically be achieved - the focus of the Montauk Project in which Stranger Things is based on. The military likely is investigating time travel as another war tactic against Russia.

Let us take a look at the first chapter of the Montauk Project: Experiments in Time book (they are seriously plagiarizing the living hell out of this thing):

Also, did you catch the whole 'attaching a massive antenna on the hood of my car to pick up a secret signal' thing? That's suspiciously similar to the state of Steve's car! Anyway...

The story of Stranger Things starts chronologically, as does Montauk, with the disappearance of the USS Eldridge and Project Rainbow (named after the bending of the visible light spectrum). Brenner’s father was revealed to have captained the boat in TFS, which disappeared for 12 hours into Dimension X and when it came back, the crew was killed or driven mad (except for Brenner Sr). This inspires Brenner to continue onto the Nevada project, and eventually, Hawkins National Lab’s studies. The USS Eldridge / Philadelphia Project conspiracy from real life went as follows:

They were studying electromagnetism, specifically the bending of light, to make objects invisible. This was only the first step in the experiments. Once Henry got involved and came back from his trip to Dimension X with powers, Brenner must have realized he could potentially use human subjects to manipulate electromagnetic fields themselves. Human subjects didn’t require machinery or set up and could bend space-time wherever they pleased, as long as they were able to learn the ability.

The more conspiratiorial side of Theoretical Physics proposes using circulating light beams to warp time-space, creating a wormhole in which one can literally walk through time. This is pop-science, likely not true but interesting for fiction purposes. This method of time travel being used is heavily implied due to the fact that the USS Eldridge was already able to disappear into another dimension by the bending of light.

This is how it worked in the Montauk Project book (absolutely ridiculous how much they took from this honestly):

My guess is that in the Stranger Things universe, they have not yet managed to time travel, only to create portals into this alien Dimension X. Previously, said portals were only made twice by highly advanced technological equipment. El demonstrated that she was able to open a portal all by herself - another step to achieving time travel with singular human subjects. Season five is when we will see the beginning of the time travel plot line, though it like in Montauk is likely already in a loop.

That’s where we get the name for the Rainbow Room, named after this Project Rainbow. The rainbow represents the full spectrum of visible light, and the goals of the project to bend said light into portals and eventually time travel wormholes.

Implications?:

-Well, first of all it seems very obvious by this point that we are going for a time travel plot line, and this is how it will be achieved.

-Will is heavily connected to light in general, the sun, and of course… the rainbow. He is also implied be the one involved in the time travel plot line. This will be very relevant going forward and deserves it’s own post. Potential funniness of defeating Vecna with the power of the rainbow afoot.

-Coma patients are known to have odd, barely detectable brain waves. The kids will be able to communicate with Max in her coma using the electromagnetic spectrum somehow, probably through the radio waves.

-On the farthest end of the spectrum, we have ionizing gamma ray radiation, which is known to cause cancer in humans. Expect Hopper’s daughter Sara to connect to this plot line (and perhaps Sam Owens’ dead son). There is a whole theory on this site already called radiationgate. I have not managed to look into it yet but I think they are probably onto something there. The original al pitch mentions the UD leakage into the real world causing cancer as well.

Your post about how many people are unknowingly falling for & spreading propaganda... yeah. I typed up a whole spiel of a comment on one of your posts the other day that I ended up deciding not to not actually post because it felt like detailing, but seriously. The amount of well meaning, genuinely anti-zionist people ignorantly sharing zionists' posts because they just don't pick up on the leading undertones is honestly more terrifying than than the amount of actual zionists in some ways.

I'm someone who was born into a doomsday cult, and seeing all these people falling for the exact same blatant (or so i thought lol) recruitment/manipulation tactics I've seen used by them my entire life has absolutely fucking terrifying. These are people who are actively trying to combat zionism, but I guess the general public is so uneducated about propaganda/cult tactics that what immediately reads as blatantly manipulative, misleading bullshit to me just doesn't even register as strange to most people. Not to be repetitive, but seriously: fucking terrifying.

There's so much focus on the way people/groups who want to manipulate you will use language of fear, but in this case especially, people need to realize they will almost always appeal to your compassion before they appeal to your fear.

It's all peace and love and happiness because that's what gets people in the door. You preach (or post) the mushy, happy, fun stuff that makes people feel good to draw them in, and you slowly start peppering in the ideas you actually want to lead them to believe later on once you've got them wanting to believe you.

This also has this added effect of helping the group or person's image. Even the people who you don't manage to draw in will have the impression of you as someone who runs their mouth 24/7 about how you're full of love and want the best for everyone, which is especially useful for when you inevitably want to frame yourself as the victim to demonize the people who will inevitably oppose you. If your first and only exposure to a person is seeing them calling for world peace and universal love, you are much more likely to be inclined to believe they (and by extension their cause) are the sympathetic, loving, peaceful good guys being unjustly targeted.

Sorry for rambling, but like... really. It won't always be something nefarious, of course--the vast majority of the the time, it won't be--but I think we would all be in a much better situation if people took it as a general rule of thumb that you should always be a little suspicious of overly vague talk about peace and love.

You're EXACTLY right. I really appreciate this message, because you put to words a lot of my inherent analysis of arguments and ideas. I like grew up with this rhetoric so it's easy to spot for me, but the way that people speak about "peace" as the overall goal when they're zionist is so blatant to me because there is no material change in the scenario they propose but rather a calmness where Palestinians are ignored.

And picking up on subtext of a lot of messages is something you have to have a muscle for kinda because of how subtle it is. The frightening part is, you're right, that the indoctrination part of zionism is the most harmful part because you appeal to their pathos — their fear, their sense of safety, etc — and you go on down the rabbit hole and slowly start being radicalized and pro-zionism or you might not even be pro-zionism 100% but enjoy... soft zionism as a mutual of mine put it once (if you read this and want to be tagged, lmk). Which soft zionism is the MAIN opinion in many liberal circles btw, its not an uncommon opinion.

I even remember once sharing a post by a zionist because i saw them talk about esims but when i went on their blog a few days later because something rubbed me the wrong way, I noticed their pinned and I was like "oh dam I gotta delete that other post" like that's how often this happens.

Idk, I try to combat this by putting sources or approaching from a standpoint of logical arguments rather than identity-based politics (although, sometimes i think there are some things that people who are a certain identity can be the only true experts on) so that I try to encourage actual engagement with ideas and walking them through thought processes rather than "I'm palestinian so just trust me."

Like even with my one fact checking list, idk if I succeeded but I wanted to emphasize that there are multiple factors you should consider when confronting ANY sort of information and should not blindly trust things. News sources have regularly burned or ignored Palestinians so I know a lot of us are really sensitive to these things, but I don't know! I hope people can engage with ideas more than just surface level thinking in general because it helps everyone when you actually interact with the point of view the other person is providing rather than just blindly trusting/distrusting people.

honestly i don’t understand how ppl get mad because others don’t wanna read no traumatic, struggle love, lowkey violent, cheating, smut galore toxic shit. the amount of thug, plug/drugdealer, bum!, straight up scary, PRISONER (which is crazy yall romanticizing mfs getting outta/being in jail??) black reader fics (from all kinds of fandoms btw) is actually concerning.. like frfr let’s be honest with ourselves cause the things i’ve seen on here has truly been interesting. (thanks to the ppl who’ll put warning tags tho ig) and ofc ima eat up some of them fics cause they be good sometimes but also that’s all i be seeing. i truly wanna read sumn cute and sweet that don’t leave a bad taste in my mouth like i don’t wanna read the fic and then be pissed off after. obvi we all can just scroll and not read what we don’t want which (if you harassing ppl for what they write it’s never that deep… be fucking fr. write something in your notes to fulfill you or sumn until you find something. don’t use that as a reason to spread negativity) and ik a lot of ppl get at blk writers abt how yn talk which (???) idc cause i talk the same so we’re not talking abt that. also i gotta say sometimes the drug dealer fics be treating yn like a princess (which 🫶🏽) but that’s every now and then when it’s not toxic or drugs, extremely excessive smut and cheating isn’t involved. ofc ofc write what you want but pls bffr and don’t act like them characters don’t be putting yn through some bullshit. yeah tension and stuff is cute cause yk you don’t want it to be boringg but toxicity and attractive tension isn’t the same. there’s sooo many ways of going abt getting that tension. and so many other blk girls say the same and it’s just can we get something positive please. and that legit can just be maybe possibly no aggressive smut.. or a annoying situationship, or all the other lowkey scary shit i be seeing. it’s disheartening to wanna read something abt blk girls and your fav that’ll have your feet kicking up and stuff and then getting pissed off cause your fav character just manipyadipped and cheated on yn or sumn. i’ll keep writing self indulgent fluff in my notes app tho until then. Y/N knew how it looked, but she can honestly say she did not burn down her old place of employment. No matter how many times she said she wanted to. Sure, maybe she threw one firework after the Mind Flayer went down, but she wanted to make sure it was actually dead. Like when you stomp on the dead spider for an extra time just to be safe. But, no matter how excited she was that her job did burn down, she is slightly bitter because now she worked at Family Video. Matched with the ugly green vest and girls flirting horribly with her co-worker (and she had to be subjected to it).

A shrill giggle cut through her skull, making her ears ring. Cringing, Y/N tried to continue her task of putting the new releases out. “She should come with a warning sign,” She muttered under her breath as she placed Warning Sign under the horror section. “Careful, long exposure may cause ear bleeds.” She rolled her eyes as another shrieking giggle hit her head like a dagger. What Steve was saying wasn’t even that funny.

“Oh my god! You’ve never seen Porky’s,” The girl gasped, her eyes wide at Steve. Y/N looked over her shoulder at them, giving Steve a glare. He has most definitely watched Porky’s. About twenty times within the past two months. “You are so missing out! You should come over to mine to watch it.” Okay, any girl who was willing to watch Porky’s voluntarily for a date deserves to be laid in Y/N’s opinion.

“Why would you need to see Porky’s when it’s your life, Stevie-boy?” Y/N chimed in, looking back to the shelf with a mischievous gleam in her eyes and a smirk on her face. One thing that Y/N enjoyed about him getting so much more female attention was the new opportunity to mess with him. He was vulnerable, an easy target. The girl snapped her head towards Y/N, chewing her gum more obnoxiously, her side ponytail swinging. Her blue covered eyelids nearly closed as she looked Y/N up and down with a disgusted look.

“Stevie-boy,” She repeated, her high voice oozing with disgust as she looked back over at Steve. Steve looked torn. He wanted to salvage the possible date because he really wanted to get some, but by the way she was looking at his friend, he was apprehensive. If she was acting this way with Y/N, what about with Robin and the kids? He couldn’t go with someone who didn’t mesh well with his found family. “The freak of the school is calling you Stevie-boy?” She was definitely judging not only Y/N, but also Steve.

That was the line and she just long-jumped over it. “Yeah, she is,” Steve stood up straighter, looking down his nose at her. “We’re friends. You have a problem with that?” He asked, his chest puffing protectively. Nobody made fun of his family except him.

She gave Steve the same disgusted once over, stepping away from the counter. “No. No problem,” She hummed. “Just thought you were cooler than this.” She muttered, turning on her heel and strutting out of the store, Porky’s in hand.

The bell ringing before the store front rattling with the door slamming behind her made Y/N look over at Steve, an innocent smile on her face. Steve glared at her, shaking his head slightly. “Look on the bright side, good thing you saw the real her before you caught feelings!” She cheered, putting out the last New Release.

“I wasn’t planning on catching feelings,” Steve rolled his eyes. “I just wanted sex,” He declared. Y/N snorted, grabbing the now empty box and walking behind the counter with him. “Were you too bored, or was I not giving you enough attention today? Why? Why would you ruin this for me?” Steve asked.

Y/N shrugged, folding the box down. “I was bored and her fake laugh was giving me a headache.”

The bell on the door rang out as Robin rushed in, greasy fast food bags and a tray of three drinks in her hands. “What did I miss? Why is Isabel French talking to her friends in the parking lot about how much of a dork Steve is,” Her blue eyes were frantic, she was on the edge of her seat to figure out what happened. She practically ran over to the counter, setting the bags and the drinks down. “Oh come on,” She drew out the last work, stomping her foot. “I went to get the food today, you have to tell me what happened!”

Steve groaned, his head falling to the counter as Y/N laughed wickedly, launching into the story. “I fucking hate both of you monsters!” He declared, his voice muffled by his arms as he stayed there, mortified slightly at the retelling and how loud Robin was laughing.

“Oh, shut up, Porky’s! This is revenge for calling her Wednesday Addams in front of Dean Anderson two-weeks ago,” Robin scolded. “Besides, you know you love us. If you didn’t, you would have still tried to go out with her.”

“Unfortunately, I do love you guys.” He grumbled half-heartedly. “Well, I unfortunately love you too, Stevie-boy.”

Well, this post has been made countless times, but I’m making one too because I’ve seen a lot of people say they’re new to tumblr and don’t know the whole “reblogging is better than liking” rule and other stuff. So without any further ado, here are ways YOU can support the fanfiction authors. Now keep in mind this applies to almost every author out there, not just the stayblr fandom, so if you’re a silent reader (or even if you aren’t), I advise you go through this post. Warning, this is a fairly long post going into detail, so yeah. I still expect you, the readers to read this, and if you’re a writer, feel free to lmk if i’ve written smth wrong or if you want me to add something! ^^

In this post I’ll go into thorough analysis of the pros and cons of each of the methods listed here and how YOU as a reader can show the authors whose fics you read more love and motivate them to produce content.

WARNING; LONG POST! GOES INTO A DECENT AMOUNT OF DETAIL. NOT EDITED, EXCUSE ANY TYPOS.

#1 : LIKING !

I think this is basic common knowledge, and a lot of people tend to do this. When you like the post, the author sees it, you see it, and if the author has their liked posts accessible (which majority of the time they don’t), and if someone deliberately goes to check it, then they see it. See why so many authors say just liking does nothing? Only liking says “Hey, I’m gonna tell you your story is not that good by simply liking it and not sharing it with other people. :D”

♯ PROS:

You’re telling the author that you've read their fic, and either you’ve enjoyed it to a certain extent, or you’re just saving it to read for later.

Likes are seen by you, the author and anyone who has access to your likes (which, most people don’t).

♯ CONS:

If you ONLY like, you’re not really helping the author’s work reach a wide audience because this site isn’t Instagram. Reblogging is the only way people can SEE our works. I’ll cover more on that in the next section.

In a nutshell, liking is good! But you should most likely use it in a combination with the other stuff I’ve listed below, because just the like itself doesn’t really do much in giving the author any feedback or interaction on their fics.

To clear shit up; I’m not talking about those people who don’t read the story or appreciate it in the first place. I’m talking about those who appreciate the fic, like it, but don’t leave any sort of feedback to show that.

#2 : REBLOGGING !

This is SO, SO important. I cannot stress on this enough. Let me explain WHY so many writers stress on reblogging content:

Tumblr’s tag system is inherently fucked up, and has grown more so over the year. I’m not kidding, at first, the fic either used to show up in the tags or it didn’t, but now, sometimes your fic can be REMOVED from the tags because of,,, idk tumblr tag shit. Anyways, as you can see, it’s very demotivating for authors at that point, because the major way for people to find their content and expand their blogs has been blocked.

Due to this reason, tumblr authors need to RELY on you, their followers to help spread their works to a wider audience. Now again, before you get me wrong, I’m not saying you ae forced to rb our works regardless of whether you like them or not. BUT, that being said, if you DO infact like the story, there’s no harm in reblogging, right? By doing this you’re indirectly telling the author — “hey! :D I liked your fic! Which is why I am gonna share it to my followers so they can read it too :D” Trust me, you’re doing nothing but helping the people who produce content for you to read. Seems like a worthy cause to hit the reblog button, right? It’s only a one, or maximum two step procedure.

Leave tags in your reblogs! Trust me, as an author myself and as much as I know from all my author friends, we oft check the tags of your reblogs to see if you found any part amazing or even if you have anything to say about the writing we put so much hard work into. Even a key smash or a “This was so [insert adjective] 🥺” is enough to leave a smile on your authors face.

♯ PROS :

You’re !! Sharing !! Your authors !! Works !! This leads to them getting more recognition, so for the content they’re so graciously providing for free, you’re promoting their blog and helping them expand it.

If the tags are being a shit, which majority of the time they are, then you’re literally making an author’s day by reblogging! You’re showing them that you, a follower and appreciator of their works are willingly sharing their content because it deserves to be seen by more people. Again before any dumb people decide to attack me, i am talking about people who like the fic but don't bother reblogging and are silent/ghost readers. I am not forcing anyone to read anybody’s work.

YOU’RE MAKING YOUR AUTHOR SO HAPPY WHAT MORE REASONS COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT !! 🥺

♯ CONS :

Literally none, because as far as I remember no author is against reblogging of their works. It’s quite literally the way this platform functions. Reblogging is IMPORTANT.

#3 : COMMENTING/SENDING FEEDBACK !

This kind of overlaps with the previous section, but THIS IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT STEP !! When you leave feedback, you are directly giving the author something so much more valuable to them than high follower/note counts or money. Your feedback is literally our serotonin. I kid you not the number of times I’ve received a positive comment and smiled and it has made my day. There’s a reason youtubers (though not the best example, bear with me here because it was the only one I could think of) ask people to subscribe, like and COMMENT. The subscription is like a follow, the like is ofc like a heart, and the comment is equivalent to an rb with comments in the tags.

You might argue and tell me that a comment is basically like an ask so the reblogging step isn’t necessary, but I’m sure 99% of you use YouTube and you know that more comments leads to people’s videos boosted in the stream/trending charts. This is what reblogging does. Reblogging shares the piece with other people like minded, which leads to a boost in reads. You are literally helping your author grow.

It’s quite literally the same thing as youtubers. Youtubers NEED validation to keep their content creation going, so do writers, so do other ccs on this site. This post is however, focused on WRITERS, so keep that in mind.

♯ PROS :

By doing this, you’re giving author valuable feedback! It’s similar to what you do in rbing with tags. Interactivity with their fics boosts their note counts and helps expand their audience, so srsly, now think of it: your one comment is playing such a massive role to help ccs create more content.

Imagine how much of a difference the note counts will be in when every person who simply likes after reading the fic, reblogs, leaves a comment and sends an ask. the note counts would be high on each and every fic, which is validation in itself, but your comments would inspire the writer so much more! Please, don’t skip the commenting part. Even a simple one like: “this is so cute!” is wonderful.

♯ CONS :

Remember, if you’re gonna give constructive criticism (which I’m sure you all are smart enough to know if different from hate), make sure the author is okay with it. Authors need to be in a specific mindset and must be ready to accept criticism, so if you’re gonna give constructive criticism to them when they’re at a low point, it may demotivate them.

Just commenting, instead of reblogging and commenting in the tags/ reblogging and then leaving an ask in their inbox, while it gives validation in plenty, will not lead to the author’s work being spread. Therefore I suggest either reblogging and commenting in the tags or reblog and then leave an ask, or comment under the fic!

!! reminder; I am not saying that if you don’t rb and just leave feedback, your feedback has no value. We authors truly appreciate every bit of feedback, but this post is aimed to help you learn how to interact with and support authors, and make them feel more motivated, because the current scenario of liking and scrolling is taking a toll on their creative abilities. Take it from a person who’s been writing for a year.

#4 : COMMSIONING VIA THEIR KO-FI/OTHER APPS !

Before any of you attack me, let me tell you that this is not a step that is 100% necessary to do. ONLY donate if you can and if you genuinely want to, and if anyone is forcing you to pay for something against your will, you need to get yourself out of there.

Regardless, if an author has a kofi and you’re able to and you want to donate, you definitely should! It’s also a valid form of support.

#5 : ADDING THEM ON REC LISTS/ RECOMMENDING THEM TO REC BLOGS

This is such an underrated option, to be honest. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen my fic was recommended onto some rec list and it’s made me smile so hard. If you like some fics, create a rec list! They’re oft very popular amongst the fans too. Making rec posts is such a great way to share your favorite stories with others.

Rec blogs! I’ve seen a couple going around, and needless to say they are a great way to get someone else to read your favorite author’s work whilst also giving them your own feedback. These blogs oft accept recs via a form or ask box, and they leave your feedback along with their own, or else they’ll oft tag the author in the feedback post, so look! You’re basically helping your author share their fic to many more people, because you’ve given them feedback and a reblog.

Validation! Feedback! Reblogs! More exposure! Helping a blog grow! Spreading love! basically a run down of the stuff I’ve said before!

Literally no con of this. Unless, a one in a million case, this author says they don’t like receiving feedback/being tagged, and I’m sure NO person has said this before, at least none that I’ve heard of.

#6 : FINAL COMMENTS; MISC !

When an author points out about how the interactivity is drastically reducing, don’t just give them blind apologies. Yes, you feel sorry for not interacting as much, we understand, but rather show that you’ll become a better content consumer through your actions. We need to see that we’re not just throwing words into a void and that people are actually trying to be better content consumers.

Understand the fact that authors don’t get paid for this, and 99% of the time, these authors don’t take commissions either. They’re giving you novel worthy writings for free. Take Percy Jackson: You think the author would have felt motivated to write the subsequent parts, let alone two whole series based off of it if literally no one showed that they were interested? Rick Riordan has sales, he is being paid, there are millions of people and big agencies who provide him feedback. Now take that huge amount and simmer it down to an audience of maybe 10000 people This is what fanfic authors want. They don’t want your money, nor are they telling you to risk your lives for them. All they want is, a reblog, some tags, some feedback, some INTERACTIVITY. A sign that they aren’t throwing fics into the void and that people actually like them, some motivation to continue. Seems fairly easy to throw an rb with some tags, right?

Don’t bother to tell me that we do this for ourselves and we shouldn’t ask for likes and reblogs and feedback, because 1) you are consuming the content that we “write for ourselves” and 2) writers post their content here for interactivity and feedback. We could just not post and write and save our fics in our dungeon drafts for years. But we choose to post to entertain the readers, the consumers. And we aren’t even asking that much in return.

Don’t give me the whole “I’m scared that authors feel that comments are annoying” excuse either because seriously this has been DEBUNKED SO MANY TIMES. Istg, in the nicest way possible, if you still think writers are annoyed by interaction and feedback, after so many posts, long rants have been posted as to how we’re not, then you must truly be living under a rock. There, I said it. Please stop thinking this way, I’ll say it again, AUTHORS ARE NOT ANNOYED OF FEEDBACK, COMMENTS, TAGS, REBLOGS. WE LOVE IT. Saying this is like saying that the audience in a theatre play shouldn’t clap when the play ends because the actors would find it noisy. 🤡

I’ve seen some people saying they have anxiety issues and such, so pls note that I’m not invalidating your condition. If you’re trying to be more interactive, I really appreciate it! If you can’t, that’s fine too. You’re trying.

But for the people who have no reason other than feeling lazy to rb and comment, your lack of interactiveness is not excused. Please. Tumblr is a reblogging site. If you’re gonna consume content like authors are some sort of machines, I encourage you to go get some more perspective.

This site is not Instagram or the satan bird app. Your likes are appreciated but frankly speaking, they do nothing to the author except tell them “Hey i read ur fic but i'm not gonna support u :D” and honestly, that is detrimental to their creative capabilities and mental health.

DON’T FOLLOW AN ACC JUST TO MINDLESS RB THEIR SIGNAL BOOST POSTS AND THEIR REBLOGS OF GIFS AND NOT INTERACT WITH THEIR WRITING AT ALL ! Trust me, authors prefer a lower amount of interactive followers than a high count that doesn’t even give them any feedback. Again your follows are appreciated, but when you’re following, you know the type of content the author creates, so the author expects that the more followers, the more interactivity. These days, this is just becoming the opposite. So don’t do it! If you’re gonna follow to read, interact with their works. I promise, this will make both you and the author happy. A win-win situation.

In conclusion: SUPPORT YOUR FUCKING AUTHORS! THEY ARE NOT MACHINES THAT HAVE NO FEELINGS TO PRODUCE CONTENT FOR YOU! FICS TAKE DAYS AND DAYS OF PLANNING, PLOTTING, OUTLINING, WRITING, EDITING, MAKING TEASERS. SO JUST SHOW THEM YOU APPRECIATE THEM WITH AN RB. IT’S THE L E A S T YOU CAN DO.

About reposted fanart accounts:

Hi guys! I’ve sort of noticed an influx of reposted fanart going around in the last few days and I wanted to make this post as a reminder of the general rules/guidelines for interacting with fanart from other artists. This applies to all artists from any community, not just the DR fandom, but since this fandom is so big, I thought it would be a good idea to write this post here.

That being said, I know a lot of reposters tend to be young and it may be their first time interacting with a fandom in general, so this post is meant to be informative and is not meant to inspire any harassment or bullying of reposters.

Let’s start with the basics.

What is reposting?

Reposting is the act of taking someone else’s art and posting it to your own social media account as if it were your own post, typically without crediting the original artist. However, many artists do not want their work reposted on another account or platform even if proper credit is given, and will deny permission for reposts even if asked directly.

Why is reposting bad?

To put it simply, it’s a form of art theft that prevents the original artist from receiving the traction and attention they might otherwise have gotten. Artists may have spent several hours, weeks, or even months on beautiful pieces of art, only for a reposter to save the picture and reupload it somewhere else in a matter of seconds. These reposts take attention away from the original artist, which can be frustrating for artists who rely on commissions or freelance work to make a living.

Even credited reposts can still harm the original artist, as many of the people who will like or reblog a reposted art piece won’t actually take the time to go like, bookmark, or comment on the original work. Additionally, once a piece is already reposted, it may inspire other reposters to upload it elsewhere, starting a chain of reposts where it becomes increasingly hard to pinpoint the original artist and give credit. This is why many reposts simply have captions like “Credit to the artist! (idk who they are)”. Some reposts may even gain enough traction that they eventually surpass the original post, which can be especially disheartening for the artist who spent so much time and effort on their work.

These many frustrating reasons often add up and cause many artists to become disillusioned with fandoms. In many cases, artists have been known to delete pieces which have been frequently reposted, or even delete their entire accounts out of sheer frustration. This is especially common in eastern fandoms, where the language barrier often means western reposters are even less likely to ask for permission first before reposting an artist’s work elsewhere. That being said, even western artists may delete their accounts or move fandoms altogether to get away from fandoms which have been known for frequent reposts.

Does reposting actually give an artist more exposure?

This doesn’t work for most artists, especially if the art isn’t credited. Some artists may decide to grant permission for reposts if they’re asked for permission directly, but many artists have accounts across multiple social media sites and prefer to upload their own work directly. If you actually want to support an artist or help their work reach a wider audience, it’s almost best to like, reblog, and comment on the original piece. Tumblr is even better for this than most social media sites, since you can leave your comments entirely in the tags if you’re too embarrassed to comment on the piece directly.

I guarantee artists will check your tags, see all the nice things you said about their art, and be very, very happy.

How can I tell if an art piece is reposted?

On Tumblr, most artists tend to have a tag for their own art, whether it’s just “my art” or “art by me” or something similar. Even if they don’t, you can usually tell whether a piece seems like it was drawn by the op by going through their blog and comparing it to similar posts that they’ve made. On other social media sites like twitter or instagram, most people will specifically call their account an art account, and you can usually tell whether they draw just by checking their bios.

Artwork which lacks any personal tags, sources, or seems incongruous with other artwork posted by the same person may be stolen from somewhere else. You can usually check by using Google’s reverse image source feature, or excellent sites like “Saucenao” to see if the piece exists anywhere else, like Pixiv or Deviantart. Saucenao even has an extension for most browsers that lets you just right click an image and immediately search it for a source.

Most artwork that’s been reposted with permission will usually say as much upfront. Art-with-permission accounts often credit the artist first and then say something like “this piece was posted with permission.” Some accounts have faked having permission in the past, but the legitimate ones who actually do ask for permission usually have screenshots of DMs where they talked to the artist. Typically they’ll either link to these screenshots in the caption or on their blog somewhere.

TL;DR Please try not to reblog or share around fanart if it seems like it may have been reposted! Reposts can be incredibly harmful to the careers and success of original artists, and it’s almost always better to interact instead with the original piece. Artists provide so much beautiful, engaging content in fandoms, and it’s a shame to see so many of them packing up or deleting their accounts all because their work was stolen without permission.

I think this is a good discussion to have with people who are newer to fandom who may not be familiar with all the proper “fandom etiquette” rules, so if people want to reblog this post I don’t mind!

csa survivor here, who's probably an "anti" (i used to be proship, bear with me) by your definition because i cannot even begin to comprehend how someone can look at horrible traumatic shit and go "damn that's hot". althought i'm obviously anti-harrassment cause i don't think anyone should be sending death threats to anyone. also i do have a few ships that are considered ~problematic~ because of an age gap or something else. so idk.

but do you have any sources or explanations on how being pro-ship is harmless?

because i can't wrap my head around people jerking off to fictional kids. because in my eyes, if the concept of a fictional child in a sexual situation is arousing, there's probably something not right with you. but again, that's just me.

if you have any genuine articles or responses that aren't just "it's fiction uwu", that would be great. if not, that's fine too. i just don't know how to feel about this discourse anymore because i got harrassed by both antis AND proshippers so lol. yea.

I can see how you would think it’s repulsive or concerning. And hey, I totally get where you’re coming from. It’s less “damn that’s hot”, and more “hey here’s a way for people to explore darker themes without any legal repercussions”. I can’t exactly give you articles about proshipping in general being harmless, but I can give you some stuff on exposure therapy for other survivors of CSA or any kind of abuse/trauma. Also big yikes to getting harassed by both sides of this. Proshippers are supposed to be anti-harassment, jfc.

Under the cut, it’s gonna be a long one.

It might not be how you cope, sure, but for some people it can give them a way to explore what happened to them and find some closure, almost in a way that desensitises the one suffering to the trauma itself, and it’s been shown in some cases with PTSD to help with the symptoms: x x x The big thing here is that it’s in a controlled environment. You can stop at any time if you’re exploring it through fandom content, which is probably the best part of it if you are shipping “problematic” ships to explore what happened to you. And some people might not do it to cope. Some people just enjoy exploring darker themes because it interests them. It doesn’t really reflect on them as a person, sometimes a spoon is just a spoon. Sometimes you see two characters and want them to make out. It doesn’t make you a bad person. This gif from a shoe0nhead video sorta explains it:

The next thing I want to cover is the whole “jerking it to fictional kids” thing. By definition, paedophilia is a psychological condition that can be treated, but not very well understood. I’ll make it clear now that I’m not defending the actions of paedophiles, but let’s make it clear that this condition needs to be better understood to prevent any harm to children and to better treat these people. I won’t deny that there are some very sketchy individuals on this website and other social media platforms. Now let’s discuss the laws around pornography portraying minors in very adult situations- while Australia doesn’t know the difference (because blanket solutions to intricate problems is kinda what we do here), in the US and UK, to my knowledge, explicit images of fictional minors is not considered CSEM (Child Sexual Exploitation Material). They do not portray real minors, and therefore does not endanger any real children or warrant an arrest or investigation- most of the time the artists have the good sense to age these characters up to be over 18. In the past, antis have wasted the time and resources of the relevant authorities by sending them after artists who haven’t broken the law, and organisations like the Centre for Missing and Exploited Children and INHOPE have repeatedly asked for this to stop happening. The use of the term ‘pedophile’ to brand proshippers ultimately ends up with a “boy who cried wolf” effect where the word loses its true meaning. Again, sometimes a spoon is just a spoon.

To put it rather simply: those who partake in problematic content or ships are not breaking the law or causing harm. What causes harm and distress is when the content that creators have tagged appropriately is dragged into spaces where it was never meant to be without the artist’s permission or knowledge or the right tags. I can understand how it upsets you and other csa survivors who might think similarly, really I do. But the best thing to do is trust that these people who ship the things you find problematic know the law and do not intend to hurt anyone because of it.

ok so disclaimer that i am very poorly read in this fandom bc (1) i am a slow fic reader generally especially (2) during pandemic times and especially ESPECIALLY (3) when i am using a lot of brainpower on writing fic, like, i have not read much in general and nothing at all now since idk like november? maybe longer it’s been a WHILE. also i have deeply idiosyncratic taste and highly specific personal dealbreakers that are not always to do with, like, “quality” lmao. so probably others would be better able to answer this and are MORE THAN WELCOME TO CHIME IN ON THIS POST! that said here’s some things that come to mind from what i have read:

pretty good year, hth/ @spiders-hth-is-an-outlier - this is i think the only total AU i’ve read? and while it is extremely specifically rewarding to magicians fans i also think it totally stands on its own as simply a beautiful and aching and sweet novel about falling in love and growing up. the tags call it a romantic comedy about depression, which immediately piqued my interest; you could also say it’s a story about love and pain. it’s funny and sexy and wise and raw and radiates love from every single sentence, i wanted to live in it forever.

moving into some season 1 AUs where all you need to know about the show is really Magic School, But It Fucks, be kind by longnationalnightmare is one of the few definitive Fandom Classics out there, and that’s because it is both insanely hot and exquisitely well-characterized, a fic about sex that’s secretly, if you’re paying attention, a fic about doing things right

i feel it in my body, i know it in my mind, @ameliajessica - this is a very sweet first date story that really sparkles with chemistry & care

beautiful something, @portraitofemmy - this is a really special story to me, i think because its mission is so in keeping with the key queliot concept of The Beauty Of All Life. it’s a story about what happens when the worst thing that’s ever happened to you and the best thing that’s ever happened to you are happening at the exact same time, and it’s about deciding to be brave enough to keep your hard open when it’s scary and when it hurts.

my lonely heart calls, @hmgfanfic - so i am obseeeeeeeeessed with this fic. like. OBSESSED. i love it so much it causes me physical pain. unbelievably clever conceit + astonishingly delightful dialogue + agonizingly good character work for both eliot and quentin, like, they’re just so well understood and conveyed and loved by this fic, and just so.... them. they’re just so them!!! also it’s screamingly funny and like the most thrillingly romantic thing i’ve read in my life.

ok and now some post-s4 stuff that i feel like you can just Vibe with! my crown is called content, cartographies/ @honeybabydichotomy - this is another fic that’s like, yeah all that “happens” in it is “people have sex,” but it’s so well-characterized and chock-full of teeny little bombs of delights that it’s a really rich and vibrant story. also the sex is great and incredibly romantic, so. also recommend living room, ny, in which quentin and eliot have emotional conversations, which we all know is what true romance is

bury the iron in the backroads, @propinquitous - this is a love story that is also about hating your dad, and, therefore, the most perfect work of fiction of all time. a beautiful tale of love and trauma that also has a dialogue exchange in a sex scene that will haunt me forever until i die. also extremely recommend the us sorry animals series, which is a gorgeous set of musings on what happens when you are in love but also your brain is still a nuclear accident zone, because of the trauma

unwish, waveleafcloud - ok so this one is like probably the most canon-dependent of the ones i’ve listed.... but it’s also cleverly plotted in its own right in a way that feels like it stands on its own, and also insaaaaanely romantic, so i am putting it here anyway. actually you might also wanna read their story reconnect, which is like an 18k series retell from q’s perspective + queliot happy ending, and so therefore might like, catch you up on the most important bits as you continue your adventures

everyone everywhere should read the stories hetrez wrote for this fandom, which are all completely perfect. from a quentin/eliot perspective, yes and yes and maybe yes and get loud are two stories about sex that are also stories about finding ways to come back together after life has torn you so thoroughly apart, and are sweet and smart and sexy; get loud in particular is also hilarious. the author’s note for get loud says “It's also kind of a sex farce and kind of a serious look at the way PTSD manifests in the body? I don't know, The Magicians has broken me.” which i think about every single day because nothing else has so succinctly yet completely captured what the magicians has done to me. the dreamers is established-relationship future fic in which quentin and eliot have a fight that is SOOOO PERFECTLY ARTICULATED i’m mad someone came up with it who wasn’t me. a partial age of miracles is like plottier and broader in scope than just A Queliot Story (although it is, also, UNBELIEVABLY ROMANTIC), and another one that is more canon-dependent than others on this list, but you should read it anyway because it is the best story in the world. you’re smart you can use context clues. your reward is getting to read things like this:

Alice said, "I shouldn't be thinking like this. I should," she rolled over onto her stomach, somehow keeping the vodka bottle upright, and muttered into the comforter. "It should be this beautiful pink-tinged softcore baby deer lovemaking, like in a Swedish porno or something."

Eliot turned his head and stared at her. "Excuse me?"

She tilted her head up at what looked like an excruciating angle, and frowned at him. "Because he's dead," she said. Then her expression crumpled, and she squeezed her eyes shut. Eliot felt a jolt of sadness, and pressed against his wound until he gasped. "I should be talking about the good things. What I loved about him. Not thinking that I wish he'd been, you know. Rougher. In bed."

Eliot took a second to gather his thoughts. Then he said, "You don't need to talk about the good things."

Alice rolled onto her back again, and she gave this horrible angry laugh that he felt under his ribs. "Don't tell me you're going to complain about, I don't know, that sound he used to make right before he — every time. He made it every time."

"I loved that sound," Eliot said.

"Every time!" Alice said. "See? You're doing the good grieving widow thing and I'm over here like a bitch saying he should have been better at fucking."

And Eliot — felt like he'd been ripped open. He hadn't been expecting it, and the surprise of it hurt almost more than the grief. "I'm not a widow," he said, and tried to sit up.

"He was good at fucking!" Alice said. "Mostly. And yes you are."

Hello :3 I saw your blog answering anons on the timeline, so a random A.C.E rant from a somewhat new Choice is coming if you’re ready. I’m not actually mad typing this all down but I’m frustrated and trying to find ways out to make A.C.E bigger with my social media managing/marketing/business lectures I’ve had in the past lol. Sorry if this is long but I need to hear opinions other than mine </3

I’m also an ARMY and saw a thread called “Jimin Being Tiny” and it was a bunch of pics him being cute and I enjoyed it so much. Now if I wanted to do the same for Byeongkwan for example, I know more than the half of the Choice fandom will literally be threatening me just because I called him small (FOR THE REASONS OF AN IDOL ACTING CUTE FOR THE FANS AND NOT THAT I DON’T RECOGNISE HIS STRENGTH). A populer choice on twitter would say “don’t call byeongkwan tiny he doesn’t like it” and others literally will be okay with it like they know as if byeongkwan is their cousin. I just know for a fact this fandom is so focused on attacking others AMONGST THE FANDOM and that is exactly why we can’t grow. It’s almost like popular choice accounts are gatekeeping A.C.E. Everyone is afraid of being cancelled and don’t talk about A.C.E on social media other than saying they are “talented” and “underrated”. They are very talented indeed, but Choice needs to understand that could be the least of marketing in the Kpop industry- especially if you don’t have a bigger company. Beat Ceo-nim is not doing the best job to promote them already, they almost never get a use of social media, when it basically is where everyone is into now. TXT for example, got so much attention just from several Tiktoks, promoting their music or hopping onto trends. They ain’t showing titties or anything, just some dances and songs. I mean A.C.E are already showing tits with this comeback lmao. I believe they have such hidden gems and would make a great use of them on the social media entering the trends. I know it’s not up to them, but it would’ve been so much better reaching out to new people. Another thing. I love their music, but as a BL lover, i first got into them with Wowkwan. Then, on a q&a their manager(?) says “Wowkwan is a fantasy, not real” (*screams* what was the reasonnnnn) and everyone in the fandom suddenly was against wowkwan and was “protecting boys” from the “rumors.” They won’t understand no one ships idols romantically already like it’s all about cute interactions and being close and the rest is up to imagination as any fan would do. For instance I can’t think anything like this happening to Woo/San from Ateez or Chan/Lix from Skz. I’m so upset about this lol. I love A.C.E and i’m an OT5, but we almost never get unit or OT5 interactions (the hotel room and the Christmas vlive were exceptions). For BTS, you could find millions of moments they give us as friendship moments or emotional moments with each other as a team, but I feel like A.C.E falls more into the individualistic category, where it’s important for every each of them to shine, rather than as a team. I’m not saying they don’t care about the team, they care about each other a lot and you can feel this from the letters they wrote each other or on that Sehyoon birthday vlive, I just don’t think they have enough interactions or moments that they showed a lot of emotions. It makes me question if they are not fully comfortable with each other or rather, stopping themselves from acting too much in front of the camera. Are they friends, or a team that was formed for a job? Junhee often talks about how being an idol is a job, but people on social media are on the social media just because they want to see the emotions they haven’t had the chance to feel irl. We already have struggles as international fans with A.C.E cause of the language barrier, unlike for example SKZ or NCT, we just need to understand as a fandom that this is a competition for A.C.E in the industry, and gatekeeping content or constantly fighting each other isn’t helping. For a win, we need to be promoting a bit more out of our comfort zone (also Beat Ceo-nim please hear me out) and stop being mad to each other for things like calling members positive adjectives, for liking an interaction between members or even for not streaming.

I'm pretty new to the fandom myself and haven't encountered any toxicity yet, but I've also only talked to Tumblr CHOICE. I know all the toxic stans play on the Twitter playground because it's a more popular platform and they'll have a greater chance of being seen to spread their negativity.

I feel like if you want to make a soft Byeongkwan thread on the bird app then by all means please do. There's going to be antis on the platform no matter what kind of thread you make. It doesn't matter how you word it, it's gonna offend someone. The antis are loud on Twitter on purpose. Their job is to push down the positive and bring up the negative.

I also don't really know how promos go for A.C.E. This was my very first comeback for them so I didn't know what to expect, and since they're from a small company it wouldn't have been fair of me to compare the quality to a group from the Big 3 or BigHit.

I mean they did a pretty great job with promotions prior to dropping the album and title, but I do know they they did a trash job of preparing CHOICE for when the actual song would drop. I remember seeing a lot of upset stans in the tag. Also I didn't know that they would only drop the MV on 1theK and not their own channel. Usually with MVs they're posted on 1theK as well as their own channel so there is dual exposure and more views. So that was pretty negligent too. IDK if A.C.E will be promoting a full month on music shows or just a couple of weeks.

I agree that TikTok would be a good platform for A.C.E as well as any kpop idol to promote on just because it's literally the most popular platform right now and they could be working on making one or maybe the members don't want a TikTok, honestly there's no real way of knowing about anything like that.

As far as interactions. I know nothing of the ships except maybe DongJun because they hang out a lot together. Also fans being mad about certain member interactions in a group is a toxic tale that's old as time. It happens in every fandom so I'm not surprised but what I've learned is that fans don't really dictate who interacts with whom, though it may seem that way to some stans. A.C.E spends most of their time with each other so they're not just going to stop interacting with a member because some immature and spoiled fan said it's messing with their ship.

I never really noticed a lack of ot5 content, but then again I don't really watch any lives of any idols because I don't have the time. I do know that both Byeongkwan and Sehyoon have taken personal hiatuses to work on their mental health so that could be a reason for lack of ot5 content. This job is stressful if not overwhelming most times, maybe some alone time is just something they really need to keep going. It doesn't matter if they're real friends or not (it's not really my place to say. Tho I think they are actual friends). Maybe one or more members is too tired to do a group live or maybe they're doing something else that they rarely have time to do. A lot of factors could go into why there may be a lack of ot5 content. That also could be a reason why they don't have personal IG/Twitter accounts. I could go on and on about possible reasons.

I'm sorry I'm not much help in these matters, my judgment is very impartial these days. I try not to be where any of the negativity is because it ruins things for me.

I have answered them, but it’s been a while and they may have gotten lost in the tag at this point, haha

1. Maintenance workers don’t leave. They exist at WRU and they are not resold, because they are trainees who are never quite up for resale for a variety of reasons. They have their own set of rooms, deep in the lowest levels of the Facility, where they have one big bedroom with bunk beds where they all sleep, their own large group shower area, and a ‘living’ room with couches, some games, and a TV that plays only preapproved pro-pet programming on a loop. They are encouraged to befriend or bond with each other because their health outcomes and life expectancies are better that way.

They eat the food the handlers eat, brought from the cafeteria, so they actually eat better than regular trainees.

They are sent through WRU during their ‘shift’ to clean up messes - blood and worse. They also go through each training room after training sessions to clean and resettle for the next trainee to be brought in, so they are in constant motion while they work. Any attempt to speak to current trainees is harshly punished.

Maintenance never sees sunlight. They will never leave the lower levels. They all wear shock collars that will go off if they attempt to get on the elevator or go outside.

They didn’t break - or didn’t break correctly, at least - and so they will never, ever be given the chance to show that WRU’s process might not work 100% of the time.

2. Basically, what I said is that WRU goes into near-total lockdown for a while, with a skeleton crew of handlers staying on 24/7 to keep training without exposure, while aboveground WRU transitions to work-from-home. Deliveries are delayed but not canceled. And by now, they would be up and running again with extra protocols for security and safety, and maintenance working even harder to disinfect.

hi!!! I remember reading one of the tags on one of your posts about how white people are like always racist and that they need to constantly unlearn racism. That's a vague summary so sorry but in the tags you said there was something psychological to do with it? Can you explain that so I can use it to explain to others???

Hi anon!! First of all it’s great that you’re trying to learn more about stuff like this and want to help explain to others!!

Second: I am white, so I can’t draw the line at what is or isn’t racist and my opinion/ arguments shouldn’t be the focus here. Instead I’d suggest reading through some of the notes of the post you mentioned because some actual POC, who are affected by day to day racism, explained more about it there and I don’t won’t to speak over their voices. (Also the op isn’t by me I’ve just reblogged it, but idk if that’s what you meant).

However since you asked about a particular tag and I don’t want to leave you without an answer I’m going to explain what i meant with it - if I’m overstepping here though, please tell me cause I really don’t want that.

Ok so in the tag you’re talking about I mentioned that internalized racism , on a sociological basis (there’s probably psychological explanations about it as well but I’m not a psychologist) can be related to the term of the Habitus.

Habitus is an important term in sociology that in its most common understanding has been introduced by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu.

To put it simply the Habitus is aspects of behavior that are 1. Usually unconscious and 2. Internalized through society and social standing. It’s not something someone was born with but something someone was born into.

Basically Bourdieu researched differences between social classes (and other social identifiers) and found out that members of specific groups didn’t just identify as members of their group because of objective criteria (for example wealth) but also because of their behavior - which, in many cases, the people didn’t even realize themselves - and that this is a phenomenon that happens not only in one aspect of societal structures but all of them (eg not just when it comes to class, but also to race, gender, orientation, etc etc.) and is something that is learned by exposure to the social circle you live in and also will stick with you your whole life, even if you can change parts of it.

(Because Bourdieu mainly researched different social classes and because I’ve only ever experienced xenophobic microaggressions but not racist ones in that sense, which means I lack the necessary understanding to talk about those in depth (also I’m white so it’s not my place to say what is and isn’t racism) I’ll use an example about classism instead)

For example: a rich person that has been born into wealth will never really know what it is like to be poor and what struggles poor people face. They can read all literature on class disparity in existence, and yet because they lack personal experience they will never truly know what it is like to be poor. So I’m all their actions, even if they try their best to not be classist, this lack of personal experience and the lack of understanding that comes with it will shine through in one way or another, usually unintentionally, because it is simply part of their ingrained behavioral structure. To them something can be completely innocuous and yet show their lack of understanding that’s been ingrained through growing up in the society they did in.

As an example: a rich person has a poor friend, who they care for dearly. One day when out and about together, the poor friend accidentally breaks their new phone and starts to panic about it. The rich friend tries to calm them down : “It’s ok please don’t cry, it’s just a phone - you can buy a new one!” . To them this statement shows their concern for their dear friend and is an attempt at calming them down by reassuring their friend and making them see the situation isn’t that bad and is fixable.

But instead of calming them down, this statement makes the friend cry even more. Because they can’t just buy a new phone, they don’t have the money. They’ve been saving up for this phone for months and now they have to cut edges all over again while also havibn to deal with not having a phone in a society where having one is pretty much a necessity. But the rich friend didn’t consider that - they couldn’t! Because in the life they live a 1000$ phone can be replaced at any moment, like you could replace a missing paper clip (I say, as if I haven’t panicked about this once as well cause I had to spend 2€ on a whole new pack of clips and couldn’t pay for my lunch that day because of that..). To the rich friend the situation registered only as a mild nuisance, but not as something worth crying or panicking over, because to them that’s what it is, which is why they acted accordingly.

They acted like they did because it’s the behavior and worldview they grew up with, and because it’s impossible for them to really understand the experience of someone who isn’t rich, because they’ve never had to experience it themselves and grew up in a society that was nothing but beneficial to them. So what they can do in the situation of the example, is apologizing for unintentionally upsetting their friend even more, educate themselves on why their friend reacted like that (eg learn about poor peoples situations through first hand accounts or scientific literature) ,work on themselves to ensure they won’t make the same mistake a second time, examine their behavior to see where it stems from and how to unlearn and help their friend , for example by offering to buy them a new phone (though they also have to accept it if the friend refuses their help or tells them it’s not their business.). And of course they also have to , at least try to, accept that what they did was wrong and that they aren’t exempt from making mistakes again in the future (because unlearning learnt behaviors takes a crap ton of work and won’t ever be fully possible, which is something that anyone who ever had a bad habit (-> which stems from the same root as the sociological term: the Latin word habitus , which has a lot of different meanings but literally translated to ‘something one has’) and tried to get rid of it knows.)

Bourdieu mainly focused his studies to the concept of Habitus on social class , but the concept is translatable to any other kind of socially learned behavior.

A straight person will always show homophobic behavior.

A cis person will always show transphobic behavior

A male person will always show misogynistic behavior. (Also before any terf tries to use this for their rhetoric: trans women face the same issues cis women face (as well as the added issues specific to trans people), because they are women and have to deal with misogyny as any other woman does. So don’t even try). (Edit: I first wrote ‘a cis male person will always show misogynistic behavior’ which is exactly the kind of unintentional mistake I’m talking about. Because writing it like this is already making a weird distinction between cis and trans men, and also implies trans men would be excempt from misogyny when they , just like any other men, aren’t either. Sorry for that!)

And, most importantly in the context of the op and your ask as well as the current situation, a white person will always show racist behavior.

No matter how hard a white person tries, no matter how much they educate themselves, listen to the voices of people in racial minorities (in this specific case black people), or how much they help - they can’t ever understand completely and can’t ever completely get rid of their internalized behavior , so with their Habitus they’ll always show their being privileged in a racist society.

Does this mean white people should just go ‘well if I can’t ever get rid of my internalized racism I don’t even have to try’ ? No. Because even if you always will keep making unintentional mistakes, it’s better to make those unintentional mistakes once, acknowledge them and try to avoid them in the future , than it is to make an unintentional mistake and then keep repeating it intentionally for the rest of your life simply because you couldn’t be bothered to try better.

Does this mean white people should be patting themselves on the back for trying to unlearn? Also no. Because for one like I said its impossible to ever truly unlearn every racist behavior, and two: trying to unlearn bad behavior isn’t some great feat, it’s basic decency. Just like in the example you wouldn’t call the rich friend a hero for trying not make their poor friend upset again, because that’s basic decency - of course they shouldn’t make their friend upset again that’s what being a friend is! So in a similar vein being an ally to Poc is trying your best to not harm anymore, and to acknowledge that even if you’re not doing it intentionally you’re hurting others with your behavior and help uphold a harmful system as long as you just ignore and profit from it.

As an example for this just read some of the replies on the op you mentioned: there’s dozens of white people applauding themselves for being ‘not at all racist’ or saying it’s impossible for them to be racist because their parents are voting for democrats or because they themselves are part of a different marginalized community (eg a woman, or part of the lgbt+ community). when that is just. Not the case. Because racism is a learnt behavior that can never get rid of completely. Because people don’t just learn behaviors from their parents but also from the rest of society (and even if they’d only learn from their parents they will also have internalised racist behaviors). Because being part of one marginalized group doesn’t mean you automatically have perfect understanding of the struggles of everyone else and this are now infallible (if that were the case then please explain how the leader of Germany’s most notorious right wing extremist party is a lesbian woman). Etc etc.

So, does this mean you should self flaggate over every little mistake? No of course not. You should realize your mistake, accept it and try to unlearn the behavior that led to it. Constant self punishment doesn’t help and might just make matters worse. And more than that by self flaggelating you will end up forcing others to pity you for being sad, instead of rightfully pointing out your mistake or investing energy to help or learn themselves - which is especially isnidious if the people that have to ‘cheer you up’ are poc themselves. It will also prevent people from pointing out your mistakes in the future because they’ll be worried you’d self hate for it again, making it even harder for yourself to unlearn bad behaviors. (also yes this point might be a bit hypocritical for me because I tend to apologize a dozen times to everyone for any small mistake no matter what the mistake was even about, but that’s something I try to work on bettering because oh wow is that a toxic behavior, no matter how understandable it might be)

So, lastly, what can you do? You can realize your mistake. Accept it. Learn what caused it and why it was harmful. Try your best to not make this or similar mistakes again. Understand and accept that you will inevitably make mistakes again. Understand that you’re not infallible. Understand that you live in and profit off of a harmful system. Listen to people from the affected communities and accept their opinions. Help where you can - even if it’s just by being a good friend. And don’t victimize yourself in the process.

I hope this made it a bit less vague and made my tag clear. Also again: I’m not infallible either and since I’m white i also might make hurtful mistakes, so if there’s anything wrong in this reply or if I’m overstepping with this please let me know so I can try to fix that. Also for the same reason take my opinions and explanations with a grain of salt and look up what people from the actually affected communities have said about this topic.

ok so. welcome to the rabbit hole that is my music taste and what is my no.1 most frequently done activity.. plastering emotions i have for fictional characters all over my music taste. I restricted myself to ¾ songs for each character & then to Edie, Hubert, Dorothea, Lysithea & Byleth because otherwise we’d be here all day (and those are the Primary Daydream Candidates rn)

Here are some songs.. welcome to my (notoriously bad) music taste. alsoi go in Very heavy handed about it all. i make only a few apologies:

Edelgard:Everybody wants to rule the word - tears for fears. (ucan go with Lorde’s cover but i prefer the original bc im like that.) i meanit’s pretty heavy handed but it’s such an Edelgard song it !!!! fuels my ficwriting. if it’s not so very Edelgard’s relationship with twsitd then idk whatto tell you. plus it’s an iconic song

Medicine - daughter. (daughter is My Favourite Band. Ever. I cannot articulate how much ilove their (and ex:re’s) music!!) anway. this is a hegegard song & i don’ttake constructive criticism. I’ll reiterate this better in other descriptions,but please don’t take my inclusion of a song about such a topic as adevaluation of it in any way, that’s not my intention. The reason I go so feralfor Hegegard is because im no stranger to watching someone you care about hurt themselvesin a way you can’t stop, and that’s what the AM ending evokes in me. Hence: asong I love that one can read the same story in. And then the lyrics ‘You couldstill be / What you want to / What you said you were / When I met you” just !! parallelsEdge of Dawn’s lyrics about regret & overall I’m very feral about this.

(Don’t Fear) The Reaper - blue oystercult. this is PRIME Edelgard telling freshly-awokenbyleth she’s been waging war for 5 years. also !!!! “Seasonsdon’t fear the reaper / Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be likethey are” >>> “The Edge of Dawn (Seasons ofWarfare) (フレスベルグの少女～風花雪月～,lit. Seneca - Novo Amor. this is another one of those songs that could mean something different to everyone. very easy to project onto, is novo amor. I like the story of being prepared to run and break ties at any given moment, but ending up - emotionally or physically - in the same place one always was. apart from the glaring tie of how Edelgard returned to garreg mach, this song is a lot of me trying to repatriate Edelgard’s lack of emotional arc in the game by saying . well. this song.

You can call me Al - paul simon. am i projecting edeleth thoughts onto my favourite song? it’s morelikely than you think!!! but also i like the chorus and all the exasperating ‘call me el’jokes i can make.. i may be half writing a fic based on this song.

Dorothea:Agnes - glass animals. so i have significant emotions about edelthea at the best of times !! and this song !!! really bloody hits it home !! yes I knowit’s got a really heavy and real subject matter and I’m not trying to devalueit or minimise it.. but the story - about watching someone close to you hurtthemselves/get hurt, and doing so in ways you can’t stop them from - is adamn real one. And a Lot of why I love Dorothea’s character in the gamebecause she’s the one who can’t stop her friends from getting hurt – through exposureto warfare .. or stopping Edelgard becomingthe monster at the end of the story. Even though she’s one of the healers onthe beagle’s team. And I feel that.

Ex’s and Oh’s – Elle King. So you know that one spn fanvid featuringthis song about all of dean winchester’s relationships? That, but for my flirting Queen Dorothea Arnault. (and I have the dumbest most fun little headcanon thatonce Dorothea and Sylvain derailed a lgbt+ society meeting whilst Edie wastrying to go over the budget by blasting this song and dancing on the table.The idea makes me laugh)

Hold My Girl – George Ezra. The whole thing about wanting just that onemoment to cherish the people you love for one moment more before you have goout face the world? If that’s not the timeskip’d Dorothea Arnault Aesthetic, Idon’t know what is.

(Call Me Out – sea girls. On a much lighter note, this song is fueling the later half of mydrafts of road trip au. And it’s literally because of that one verse. im gayshut up.)

Hubert:Red Right Hand – nick cave and the bad seeds. Is it on the nose? Is itheavy handed? Oh u fuckin bet but that won’t stop me!!! A) it’s a good song. ItIs. B) I like narrative songs. C) Any ‘red right hand’ symbolism in Anycharacter has me love them immediately and also plonk this song in the middleof any playlist about them. sure, the artic monkeys version might be a bit more on hubert’s brand.. but my mileage varies about it lmao

I had fortress by bear’s den earmarked for Hubie, as I think it’s easilyread about boundaries and a one sided intense relationship & that’s! Hubiebaybee! But I can’t possibly cover unhealthy relationships without shoving thealbum Hospice by The Antlers into every which way of it. It’s by no meansdirectly translatable to Edelgard and hubert’s relationship and it’s arguable ifI should even mention it in the same sentence as a bloody fictional character… that beingsaid, I’ve been having emotions about:Shiva – the antlers. This song specifically reads to me to be a really goodarticulation of my own thoughts about Hubert’s perspective of Edie getting experimentedon. heavy but damn. I like that. I just see a lot of what their teen years togethermust have been like in Shiva.

Time – Pink Floyd. Ok so.. it’s like Hubert in parallel bc I think thissong is a lot about searching for a purpose/reason or a quote unquote bloodyred path in life. And I may have been listening to it when I watched Hubert/DorotheaA support & now it’s just permanently associated with it bc it complementedit so well. And I like it. So . it stays. It’s very much a beagles song to meas well.

Lysithea:The Beautiful Dream – George Ezra. Ok so I read this Edelysithea ficwith this on repeat bc the title reminded me of it, and then I stuck it onrepeat because it worked too well and now.. im crying.. and i like the inflection of Lysithea’s bitterness over the titular lyric. (but also, it remains one of my steadfast edeleth songs.. sorry lys)

Secrets (Cellar Door) – Radical Face. Another Edelgard&/Lysitheasong!! I really like their relationship ok. And given the song itself can beread straight or an allegory for whatever you particularly want, but the storyis just too on the nose for me not to mention it here.(also general advocation of listening to the whole of radical face’s musicbecause I’ve loved it for years now & the work is beautiful.) (also it’swonderful for fe awakening projection. Or ur own.)

Oh Children – nick cave and the bad seeds. there’s a million different interpretations of this song, but to try nail a few onto Lysithea.. there’s the harry potter use of making/finding a light in the depths of tragedy & i love that for Lys. there’s the whole ‘the kids aren’t alright’ theme and it’s various depths. and i like narrative lyrics to plaster my large fictional-character-caused-emotions onto, so make of this one what you will.

Marianne (and Lysithea too if you like)Bad Blood – Radical Face. Ok so. This is one of my favourite songs in bloodyexistence, and it’s so loaded with meaning & it has a metric tonne of it. Icould wax lyrical about how much I love Radical Face’s work. I don’t want myinclusion of this song (specifically this one) to in any way devalue it. Butmusic is ofc incredibly subjective, and so is my reading of a lot of threehouses – in case it’s not bloody obvious by now. There’s a Lot of stories onecould take from Marianne’s character (and none of them are More Valid^tm thanany other), and I do see a very personal story in her – as I do in this song. Hgghhghive just spent 10 minutes trying to find an impersonal way to talk about twovery personal and relative stories, which naturally doesn’t work. That, and theway I read her story is Real Fucking Dicey for tumblr.com. so if this song is about accepting rejection because of parts of yourself so deep they’re in your blood, i think.. y’all can see.. where my neurodivergent gay self is going with this..

Byleth:Something to Believe In – Tom Walker. Yeah. You’re bloody welcome. If this isn’ta completely on the nose Byleth song, I’ll eat Dorothea’s hat.

Don’t Let the Man – Fatboy Slim. ~ And the sign said green-hairedpartially possessed emotionally void mercenaries need not apply for aprofessorship at the country’s most prestigious academic centre… ~

Emigrate - Novo Amor. this just fucking Got Me in the ‘actively choosing crimson flower’ feelings. im an emotional wreak but its aight. the lyrics just matched up too well for me to let it go !!!

Alps - Novo Amor. this hit me in the ‘i miss the gremlin child sothis’ feelings one day and now it’s permanently stuck that way.

Make Them Gold – chvrches. (this is very much associated with awakening’sfuture past kids and also the Carmilla series in my mind But!!) I love a story about‘if we’re all falling, we’re going down together’ and the magical power of teamwork, and how it brings out the best in people.. & that’s what this song& Byleth kinda bloody stand for ya know??

I want to start by saying that @captain-janegay is a truly amazing friend, and I want to hold them up as a paragon of someone who really deeply cares about their friends?

I also want to start by thanking them for making me really think about my attempts to distance myself from fandom for the past few months, and how my reaction to what happened when things got bad (withdrawing from posting most of my fandom related thoughts online, instead creating a series of very lengthy gdocs where I keep all my fandom thoughts and only very very very rarely sharing those thoughts online, as a response to a period of time where I was receiving at least one message calling me a particularly violent antisemitic slur each and every day) may be tied into the sort of bullying I experienced as a child.

They really made me reckon with how much of my current attempts to isolate myself from fandom (and then having this terribad cycle where I bottle my fan feelings up and when they come out it is as an over enthusiastic bubbling mess that I am immediately deeply ashamed of) are actually me attempting to reduce my exposure to attack, and how much of it really is me in the midst of a horrible depressive episode saying that my childhood bullies were right.

I am so grateful to have friends like them.

I also, I think, may really start posting my fandom thoughts more on here again? IDK.

I... am not sure as of right now how I’d even start doing that (did I mention I have several hundred pages of fandom thoughts and feelings written in a gdoc?) much less how to properly tag the sort of meta/analysis I’ve been engaging in as of late (I very much do not want to tag hate, and do not consider my analysis to be character hate in any way, but it is very very very different from the sort of things I see in those character’s tags and I am certain it would be read as bashing as opposed to an attempt to understand why certain narratives cause particular reactions when I consume them).

I do know however that I am a person who has special interest hyperfixations, I have since I was a child. Ever since I was a child I have responded to those by wanting to talk to people about them. Often desperately so. These past few months, where I stopped really talking to the internet at large about things... it was so stifling and suffocating, and the few times I did talk about these things it felt like a flood of over-enthusiasm breaking free, and I was always immediately ashamed after. I find myself fixating on the hyperfixation more weirdly, without any outlet for my feelings, and when something within it makes me happy, instead of sharing that joy with others, I have been catching myself berating myself for daring to find pleasure in something so “silly” that no one else cares about.

Quite frankly, trying not to talk about my fannish special interests is really fucking bad for my mental health.

I’m not going to pretend my thoughts on these things are profound or worth reading or anything like that, but there is a part of me that truly needs to at least put them out there, to pretend I am not alone in getting amusement and entertainment out of thinking about these things.

Watch me not act on any of this and keep isolating myself, but I just... idk... I feel like if I post this on here it makes me feel somewhat obligated to follow up with posting some stuff eventually?
