this is something i want to go deeper into in a video essay but it can't be understated how fucking weird it was as a deeply-oblivious-to-my-feelings-for-girls baby bi to be on tumblr during the time when every popular straight ship was healthy and sweet and every popular wlw ship was abusive and toxic.

i envy the gen z kids who grew up with avatrice and calliette and lumity. or even older gen z kids who grew up with korrasami and catadora. they got wlw ships that were not only canon but warm and sweet and based on genuine affection.

when i was a little baby bi on tumblr, the big sapphic ships were swan queen (regina was canonically a rapist and her most consistent character trait was torturing people who tried to help her) and emison (allison spent years bullying emily for her sexuality and only stopped when she decided she wanted to fuck her).

these are the ships that tumblr tried to sell me as high sapphic romance.

hetero couples were given grand love stories and confirmed soulmates. gay couples were rarely canon, but fanon told the story of star-crossed lovers, destined to be apart yet deeply embedded in each other's souls.

and the lesbian romances were... women yelling at each other and gaslighting each other as an audience of mainly grown women insisted one character's abuse would just go away if they were given the green light to fuck the other into submission.

as a teenager, i was just starting to understand that i liked girls. but i didn't want the kind of relationship that was being romanticized. i didn't want a girl to hate me but also want to sleep with me. i didn't want her to hurt me and then maybe feel a little sorry afterwards, but then do it again.

i wanted the grand love story i saw for straight couples. i wanted fairytales and friendship and devotion and affection. i wanted women who healed together, women who protected each other, women who built lives together.

that isn't what i saw in fandom, though. so i thought that maybe wlw relationships were just... like that. maybe they were mainly physical, always tumultuous, never soft. if i didn't want that, i probably didn't want to be with a girl. i buried the feelings deep.

also, the amount of swan queen shippers that called me an evil straight person for not liking the ship probably didn't help that particular journey of self-discovery.

i wish i could go back and tell baby me that the sapphic love stories i wanted exist and they are beautiful and canon and beloved. a couple of them are even written by me.

i guess i'm just feeling reflective. and i've never seen anyone share this kind of experience, so i figured... why not? someone will get it.

Hey, are you a Once Upon a Time fan? If not, disregard, but if so I’d love to read your thoughts on similarities/differences/parallels of Swan Queen vs. Buddie

Hi lovely Nonnie!

Thank you for the ask. IDK how you’re going to feel, if I tell you that I did watch OUaT, and that I absolutely loved it! But also that I was a Captain Swan shipper, not a Swan Queen one. I hope you don’t hate me! XD I’m very much a “ship and let ship” type of person, but for Swan Queen specifically, it was one of those ships where, even though it wasn’t mine, I could see why people shipped it. On paper, it has everything that I should be loving ('coz I suspect that, just like people have a specific romantic type, I have a specific kind of romantic ship I’m more into. I love the “king and lionheart” trope - let me know if you’re not familiar with it - mixed in with “battle couple.” I also adore it if my ship co-parents). So even though for some reason, I ended up being hooked on Emma and Hook (I apologize for the collective groan this awful pun is responsible for), I know exactly why people liked Swan Queen, I could see it, and I have even thought about parallels between them and Buddie. But then, I also think there are certain parallels between Captain Swan and Swan Queen, which obviously means I see parallels between Captain Swan and Buddie... I have to admit, the latter is more interesting to me, because they weren’t supposed to happen. Hook was only meant to be there for the one ep. But he and Emma not only went canon, they became each other’s and the show’s endgame.

So basically, IDK if you’d want me to talk about any of this if I’m not a Swan Queen shipper? I also don’t know which comparison you’d like me to talk about out of the two (and I’m guessing both would probably be too much). I guess, let me know whatever you decide? Affect and Emotion in Femslash Fandom

Dear people, I know I rarely post anything...not to say basically never...here, but now I have a favor to ask! And which place is better suited than Tumblr? I am currently writing my thesis on affect and emotions in femslash fandom, the aspect of community, the notion of comfort, and trauma. And I would like your thoughts and experiences regarding these points if you are willing to share them. What are your experiences with femslash fandom and fan fiction on an emotional level? How are you invested? Which emotions do you associate with femslash fandom? What are your affective responses when reading fan fiction, for example? What are your favorite ships and fandoms, and why? Has femslash fandom helped you in any way with dealing with some kind of trauma? I know these are very personal issues, and I completely understand if you do not like to share any answers to these questions. Concept: Jack Kline was turned into an Ostium

And looking at how the Ostium was used in the season finale further underscores what will be needed in the future for the story to move forward, and for Jack and his family to heal.

Let's go through it:

LATA: Our box has a name. They call it the Ostium.

CARLOS: Oh. Latin for "an opening in the body." What, didn't any of you guys ever go to Sunday School? ...So is that thing organic? Is it a mouth or... [chuckles] any other kind of hole?

LATA: Let's just stick with a mouth, please.

ADA: So this box eats monsters?

ADAM: It's one of my ribs, dude. Everything can contain the spark of the divine, but this puppy? It's packing enough punch to create life. Or, in your case, destroy God.

SERAFINA: Jack, making your vessel strong, reclaiming your human soul, it was... it was all preparing you for this.

JACK: What'll it do to me?

ADAM: Start an elemental chain reaction. It fuses your soul and your grace into a... Like a...

SERAFINA: Metaphysical supernova.

DEAN: Meaning what?

ADAM: You'll collapse into a living black hole for divine energy. One nothing can escape—not the darkness, not God himself. But once it starts... you can't stop it. So, don't use 'til game time. You dig?

Dean: All that prep work we did to turn Jack here into a cosmic bomb? Oh. Well, it turned him into sort of a power vacuum. He's been sucking up bits of power all over the place.

–SPN 15x19, "Inherit the Earth"

"A living black hole for divine energy" / "a power vacuum" is akin to how the Ostium functions. (And remember that Chuck orchestrated this outcome.)

The final step of Jack's transformation in 15x17 and the way the Ostium is activated are also similar:

Adam's rib, containing extra "spark of the divine," was placed in Jack's palm and he absorbed its power. After his initial explosion outward, Jack was then turned into a vessel that acted as a vacuum for divine power.

When an item was placed on the Ostium–like a rock from the Akrida's world–it absorbed the item, which determines what powerful beings the box "eats" and where it sends those beings when activated.

Both Jack and the Ostium were also wielded as weapons.

Which, of course, this show condemns explicitly:

LATA: So you had a friend stuck in a cycle of violence, and instead of helping him, you wielded him like some kind of weapon?

And, with Joan / the Akrida Queen, we saw what happened to a hunter who absorbed monster essence: she became corrupted.

JOAN: What I decided was that the monsters weren't the problem, kid. Mankind is the problem. They always need saving. And Hunters are the ones who end up paying the price with our lives. And then what do these rescued humans do with their precious second chance at life? They waste it… kill each other, beat each other down, destroy our planet. Monsters have it right. Humans are nothing more than food.

LATA: Is that you talking? Or is it the monster essence that's powering you?

MARY: The monster essence drove her mad. She became so obsessed with making sure that Hunters were protected, and she believed the only way to do that was to wipe out everyone who needed saving.

(Joan is also a dark mirror for Dean, but that's a separate meta topic entirely.)

With how Jack is acting in 15x19 and the SPNWIN finale (and as part of Chuck Won as a concept), something seems to be wrong with him along those lines.

So in regards to the Ostium, what was the solution the team used in the season finale? What did they need to defeat the Akrida Queen?

ADA: The Queen is about to sing her swan song. We can't rewind this tape here.

CARLOS: Wait. What if we could rewind the tape? Metaphysically speaking, if you know what I mean.

–SPNWIN 1x13, "Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye"

CARLOS: Well, whatever you feed it creates a portal connected to that object. So we fed it the rock, and it was able to shoot the Akrida back to their world.

MILLIE: So, if we feed it the journal and trace the sigils in reverse, the Ostium can bring here whatever was tied to the journal... the Mystery Man, if he's even alive.

They reversed the polarity of the Ostium to try to summon Dean, which required using the journal–something “personal” and “clearly connected” to him, as Mary said at one point.

Now, of course, the result when they used it on the Ostium was that it gave the team the Impala rather than Dean for plot reasons. However, the point holds: Dean's journal was the key to metaphysically rewinding the tape and getting the Ostium to release / return what it had absorbed.

That journal was filled with Dean's thoughts, which we got throughout the show in the form of the story he's telling / narrating. They're the healing lessons repeatedly demonstrated by the 1972 gang that Dean has to use in his own life to free himself from the trap he's in, break the cycle of violence, and get his own happy ending.

So, follow the through-line:

The Ostium and Jack are seemingly similar. Just like Dean's journal was used to reverse the Ostium and get it to release/return what it absorbed... The lessons inside of Dean's journal are what’s needed to reverse the polarity of Jack’s transformation, getting Jack to release the God power he absorbed too.

And what are those lessons in Dean's journal? Ah, well, that's what The Winchesters (the story Dean is telling) is dedicated to showing and telling us. That's the function of the entire show.

To highlight a few mirroring moments relevant to the topic at hand:

TONY: You're scared of your own son?

ADA: I'm not scared of you. I... you are my son, and I love you.

TONY: If you love me, you would've told me the truth.

[...]

ADA: I... was wrong to lie to you about who you are, and I was even more wrong for not believing in you. I know you're not your father. You're not the worst parts of him. You're not the worst parts of me. You're just... you're my... You're Tony.

MAC (possessing John): Why did you give up on me?

TRACY: I didn't know how to help you. I was scared.

MAC: I was scared too. I needed my family by my side.

TRACY: I know it's about ten years too late... but I'm here now, and I am so sorry.

LATA: It's not too late, Mac. You can still break the cycle.

Mutual honesty, apologies, and forgiveness between Dean and Jack are the vital place where they must start. After all... Jack went through with his transformation and later with the corrupting absorption of God power simply because he was desperately trying to earn Dean's forgiveness, something that was repeatedly emphasized throughout season 15. The cycle remained intact instead of broken, and that's why they lost.

So saying that they need to reverse the polarity... What does that mean? It means that their family needs to have emotional release for there to then be the cosmic release of God power, so that that power can be put back out into the universe and no longer have personhood.

Only then will they break the cycle of violence and be able to be free of Chuck's influence once and for all.

You don't need Jack and Ostium parallels to understand and know this about the story. But I do think it's neat, further enhances the overall themes, and once again supports the fact that a Chuck won plot / what happened to Jack was deliberately being centralized! :)

Phrases I think [tumblr] needs to learn.

They are. Temporal context. Periphery demographic. Queerbaiting. Collateral damage. Three of which a lot of people use incorrectly to their advantage. And another that I’m 90% sure they’re ignorant about the actual meaning of. So for the purposes of this post I’ll be listing them along with the meanings and some examples. Like so:

Temporal context. Understanding that when a show, film or book is made and/or set more often than not influences its contents. For example. Stranger things. Friends. Harry Potter. Original star trek. Classic doctor who. You cannot and should not approach these with a 2022 mindset because things made and set twenty or a hundred or hell even five years ago are never going to match the current morality system you’ve cultivated through social media. Either continue being mad that a show set in Reagan’s America hasn’t said the words gay or lesbian to describe its two lgbt characters yet or acknowledge they’re doing a helluva lot more than an actual show from the eighties would’ve done, move on and enjoy what they’ve done so far. Trust me. You’ll be so much better off if you do

Periphery demographic. Why we aren’t getting actual canonical lgbt characters in mainstream Disney movies while the current old guard are still around. It’s all very well and good to go on about how “don’t they know what I would’ve done for representation as a kid?” But they don’t. Because they don’t care about the Tumblr demographic. They care about entertaining the five year olds and the parents with the money to spend on the film who might not want to take the kids to see it if there’s anything they might find objectionable in it. And sadly. Quite a few believe that lgbt content kids films is poisonous to their precious offspring. It’s a truly, truly, horribly shitty belief system. But still. It’s the ugly truth.

Queerbaiting. I’ve heard of it. I’ve never seen it. And all the pairings I’ve seen labelled as it. Ain’t it. Destiel. Supercorp. Swan queen. Byler. Johnlock. That’s not queerbaiting. That’s fans latching on to something that isn’t there and going ballistic and quite frankly terrifyingly entitled when it doesn’t happen. Just because you think a character that’s only ever been interested in the opposite gender is secretly gay and in love with your obsession doesn’t make them gay or make you right. No matter how much meta, fanfic or gifsets you make and consume. Clothes, eating habits, hair and way of speaking doesn’t make someone gay. Do you know what does? Actually being homosexual. Which Dean, Kara, Emma, Mike and John are not. Headcanons are fine. But if you have to change every single little thing about a character to enjoy the show. Then you shouldn’t be watching said show.

Collateral damage. Audrey Rose in descendants. Lindsey Lister in Gilmore Girls. Side characters (Lindsey) or antagonists (Audrey) that exist to be a background character in the main characters story. Unfortunately. Many fans latch onto these characters are bleat about how they deserved better. When they didn’t. Especially in Audrey’s case. Lindsey existed purely to show that Dean Forester, that poor poor mistreated boy, wasn’t over Rory. Audrey existed as the stereotypical bitch that the boy leaves for the better option. And when they tried to give her depth. Her still didn’t get wet. I hate Audrey. Always have. Always will. And I don’t care about Lindsey. But they served their purpose. And fans should leave it at that.

So there you go. Four phrases that [tumblr] should learn. If you do. Then you might wind up being ever so slightly calmer than you were before.

Considering how the boarbatusk summon represents Weiss’s Huntress side, it makes total sense we see Willow summon the same type of Grimm to defend Whitley! Do you think we’ll get to see more of Willow’s past as a Huntress, and do you have any theories yet as to how her summons may tie in and what allusions she could possibly come to present in the arcs of the Schneeblings?

I have actually discussed Willow a little bit here and here.

In short:

1 - When it comes to Willow's giant Boarbatusk, I am not sure it hints to a possible past as a Huntress (even if it is still possible), but rather to her motherly instincts. After all, boars are known to be protective mothers, always ready to fight for their cubs. Throughout the years, Willow has instead failed to protect her children. She wants to, but can't find the strength to effectively oppose Jacques. However, in Dark she is able to act in order to protect Weiss and Whitley. Hence her true self aka a mama boar emerges as strong as ever.

2 -When it comes to Willow's allusion, in one of the 2 metas I suggest an analysis of her arc through the lens of The Six Swans. To be fair, it is a loosely allusion that fits thematically rather than plot-wise. The Six Swans is the story of a Queen that stays silent for 6 years in order to free her 6 brothers, who are stuck as swans. She must sew 6 shirts without laughing or talking. As a result her husband's mother accuses her of killing her 3 children and sentences her to death. In the end, though, she frees her brothers and defends herself, is reunited with her 3 children and the Evil Mother is killed. You can read Willow's passiveness as her keeping silent in front of Jacques's abuse towards herself and her 3 children. In the end, though, she finally stops her silence and stands up for her family.

That said, your ask had me realize Willow's Boarbatusk might have an additional meaning, which fits Weiss's Snowhite...

Willow is Snowhite's Hunter

The Hunter is told by the Evil Queen to kill Snowhite, but the man has pity of the girl and lets her go. Later on, he kills a boar and tells the Evil Queen its heart is actually Snowhite's. In short, he is a parental figure (he is symbolic of the Father), who wants to protect Snowhite, but is too weak to succeed. All he can do is to help the girl in an indirect way.

Willow fits to a T. She loves her children, but is incapable to protect them effectively. Even when Weiss returns, all Willow does is to share some information with her daughter. She could have stopped Jacques herself, but doesn't. She fails to act:

Weiss: I think Father may have done something. Something wrong. Willow: I thought we all simply assumed that at this point. Weiss: Yes, well, some of us are trying to do something about it.

However, throughout volume 8 she becomes more active until she fights with her Boarbatusk for Whitley's sake.

What does it mean? It means that Willow is being inspired by Weiss and is growing more into a Huntress. So, the point isn't if Willow was ever a Huntress (maybe she was! Not saying she wasn't :)), but that she is growing into one, just like her daughter. A person ready to risk her life for her loved ones.

All of this brings us to a cool idea I had thanks to you :D

So, if you have read some of my previous metas on Weiss's allusion (sorry they are so long :/), you know I think Weiss's summonings all represent a character from Snowhite.

The Boarbatusk is the Hunter:

The Arma Gigas is the Prince:

The Queen Lancer is the Queen:

All together they make Weiss, just like all the characters together make the story of Snowhite. Throughout her summonings, then Weiss grows more into herself. She polishes who she is and blossoms into a wonderful Snowhite of her own.

Still, this is just the first part of Weiss's story. After all, her arc is about reconciling who she is (Weiss) with her being part of her family (a Schnee). This is why her semblance has a double meaning:

It lets her project outside parts of herself

It is shared by all the members of her family

So, what happens after she integrates all her parts (Huntress, Knight and Queen)? Easy, she inspires her family members to grow more like her too. They blossom into Snowhite's characters, so that they can all be at Weiss's side. And so she realizes they are all important parts of who she is, as well. Like her summons...

So, we have:

Willow as the Hunter

As we have seen, Willow struggles with passiveness, like Weiss initially. However, in the darkest hour her inner Huntress comes out in the shape of a giant Boarbatusk.

Whitley as a Knight to be

Whitley's arc in volume 8 is literally Weiss's character development twice as fast :P He defrosts and starts using his resources to help others. Not only that, but his climatic moment in Dark is him killing the Hound with Nicholas's armour. (Yes, Willow helps, but Whitley has the idea). Just like his sister, he refuses the empty legacy he was handed (the decorative armour) and turns it into something useful (a weapon to save Weiss and her friends). Weiss starts her journey by killing an Arma Gigas, while Whitley starts his by breaking another one of his Grandfather's armours.

Winter as a Wonderful Queen

Winter is the Snow Queen (Winter Maiden), who is slowly warming up to grow more into a kind and open Queen like Weiss.

In short, Weiss's avatars are parts of who she is, but they are also linked to her family members, who are inspired by Weiss to grow into a specific role. All together they make our Weiss Schnee.

In the next volumes, it would be interesting to see the Schnee Family cements their positive developments. When it comes to Willow specifically, I think she needs to be there for her children, even more than before. Especially, I think she and Winter should have a moment of reconciliation and I would like if she were to mentor Weiss a little bit. Who knows? Maybe she knows something about their family semblance her daughters ignore.

If Willow ties into some other allusion or has some other minor one of her own, I don't know. Personally, I would like for the Schnees to have more Swans allusions :P I just like the idea, no deep reasoning here. Similarly, I would also love if the Christmas allusion they have were used more effectively. Like, can Weiss grow into Santa Klaus herself? And can Whitley be an elf (he has the right looks :P). Willow is a tree, so nothing can make me think she isn't meant to be Nicholas's little Christmas Tree.

So, I’m a big fan of the regular stand-up format: funny stories for varying lengths of time that average out to an hour, callbacks, building up a theme, tying threads together, serious and/or sad bit at the end, try getting overly personal or overly political if you think you have the chops to handle it (because it’s fantastic if done well and really hard to watch if done badly), preferably some meta commentary, up to four traditional punchline-driven jokes if there’s enough time. It’s an excellent formula.

I don’t completely object to experimentation. Nick Helm and Rhys James made me realize that spoken word poetry is probably the artsiest thing I really like in a stand-up show. And I often like people who add music in there. Sometimes I even don’t mind a prop or a costume.

What I find it less easy to get into is sketch comedy, and/or character comedy, something with a narrative that’s entirely fictional. Physical comedy. Anything that can be described with the word “clowning”. I think this is why I don’t mind that a lot of the comedy recordings I have are audio only. The visual side isn’t a big part of what I enjoy in most comedy.

Basically, I'm a big fan of stuff that was called alternative comedy twenty or more years ago, when the thing to which it was an alternative was just a misogynist going setup-punchline for 30 minutes straight. Whereas stuff that's called alternative now can be literally anything, and some of it I like, and some of it makes my chest feel weirdly tight in an uncanny valley sort of way. I don't like puppets. I'm glad everyone else is having a good time but I don't like the puppets.

I’ve posted about this before, and usually add that every once in a while I’ll watch something like that to try to expand my horizons. Here’s how that’s gone.

Shows that have made me think – yep, I was right to believe this isn’t for me, I mean I’m really glad everyone’s having a good time and I wish them the best and I can appreciate that this might be technically very well made, but not for me:

- The Delightful Sausage – Nowt But Sea

- Mr. Swallow – Houdini

- Phil Ellis - Excellent Comedy Show

- Anything with that little purple Feltface puppet

- I watched this show called Siblings that was streamed from the 2023 Edinburgh Fringe because it was a variety show and I wanted to know what that was like, there was someone who spun hula hoops and removed her clothes and someone else who juggled fire and various sketches and a drag queen and one guy who just slipped on banana skins as his whole act, I was very impressed with some of the technical skills on display but it also felt weird and uncomfortable and the only part where I had any idea what was going on was when Tom Ballard came on to tell jokes about his sex life and made me say “Oh thank God for something I recognize”

- Anna Man – A Sketch Show For Depressives

- Elf Lyons – Swan (to be fair, this is probably a lot funnier if you’re familiar with how ballet works)

- Christopher Bliss – Writing Wrongs (this barely belongs on the list because it’s very accessible, but technically it counts because the whole thing was in character, and the character seemed to pretty much have one joke, and that one joke was quite funny but not for a whole hour)

A lot of it made me laugh but it still gave me this strong sense of "this isn't really my thing":

- Lorna Rose Treen – Skin Pigeon

- Joseph Morpurgo – Hammerhead

Shows that have made me think – actually, I could be cultured and understand outside-the-box comedy, I am enjoying this a lot:

- The Delightful Sausage – Ginster’s Paradise (I don’t think this was actually more accessible than Nowt But Sea, I think it just watched it second and enjoyed it more once I’d figured out what to expect from them)

- John-Luke Roberts in general

- Zoe Coombs Marr in general

- Lazy Susan – Forgive Me, Mother!

- Crizards – Cowboys

- Does Jordan Brookes count? I went into his stuff thinking it might be too experimental for me, but then it ended up being much more accessible than I’d expected, I did really like it though.

Shows that I can definitely tell are very good, and they made me laugh and think at the right places, but also made me really uncomfortable while watching them and I don’t know if I could call the experience enjoyable, but it was still good in some other way I think, I mean I recently mentioned in a post that I find John Robins “pussy line” routine mildly uncomfortable just because I’m a bit squeamish about hearing someone say the word “pussy” that many times in a few minutes and this sure did have a challenge for that side of me, also I find puppets difficult to look at, but seriously, they were really good, they made me feel a lot of things in the way I believe art is supposed to, I mean they made me feel a bit anxious in a squeamish way but also I think made me feel some proper art things alongside that, and they were funny, overall I’d probably pay good money to see her live but only if I’m allowed to close my eyes at some parts, it’s at times like this that I remember I am a jock/athlete that migrated to this level of art appreciation in my thirties, I do not have the type of theatre kid background that may be necessary to be unbothered by all the weird shit going on in this, but still, really really good and I highly recommend them though with the caveat of trigger warning for like everything:

Debunking the Princess/Queen Genevieve Theory

This may disappoint some people...

This is a popular Barbie theory, and I’m sorry to say, but this theory cannot work without totally breaking canon/logic from both Princess and the Pauper and 12 Dancing Princesses.

I’ve seen in favor of this theory:

They share the same name

They both have blonde hair and blue eyes

That’s it. Two points of evidence. Let’s look at those individually:

They share a name: This is just one of many instances of Barbie re-using names for characters. Even just 9 movies in, they were doing this. Examples: Tommy (Nutcracker & Rapunzel), Kelly (two characters in Swan Lake, if you count that; technically it’s Kelly “playing” the elf during the story but they are still different characters. You wouldn’t call “Barbie” and “Odette” the same character), and Courtney (Barbie Diaries, 12 Dancing Princesses). Sidenote: PG’s original name was going to be Jocelyn.

They have blonde hair and blue eyes: Queen Genevieve is mother to Anneliese, who is also blonde with blue eyes, so it makes sense to give those traits to her mother as well. And if you want to get meta with it, Anneliese and PG are both “played” by Barbie, so of course PG is going to have blonde hair and blue eyes.

Now let’s observe all the evidence against this theory

1. Let’s go back to their appearances for a minute, as every once in a while I will see claims of their “similar” facial features. I admit, Barbie movies, especially the early ones, have an unfortunate case of “same face”; a lot of models have similar features. But that doesn’t mean Genevieve and Genevieve have the exact same features.

Sorry for my low-quality mock ups here, doing the best with what I have. Their eyes are different shapes, with P.G. having much sharper corners and bigger eyes overall. PG also has a bit of a straighter nose, while Q.G. has a small slope and a rounder tip. P.G.’s lips are also thicker than QG’s, and QG has a more pronounced cupid’s bow.

Their eyes, while both blue, are also different shades.

I do admit, though, this part of the argument has to be taken with a grain of salt, as QG is older, thus her features may be slightly different from when she was younger. We can never know for sure, as the only flashbacks we see are still images that aren’t very clear, and her older model is used anyway.

2. Accents: QG has a British accent (don’t know which region/area exactly). PG has an American accent (again, not sure which specifically because I know nothing about linguistics and dialect and whatnot). PG is already 16 during the events of her movie, so when and why would she suddenly develop a completely new accent? From what I’ve been able to find with a simple Google search says our accents usually get solidified during our adolescent & teen years. Yes, accents can be changed/manipulated overtime if you spend time around others with different accents enough, but lots of people in Anneliese’s castle have British accents as well, yet she doesn’t have one.

3. QG’s husband looks nothing like Derek, even an older version of him. So to make this point work, you’d have to assume he died or they got a divorce, either way PG got with someone else. In addition, QG’s husband was King, while Derek would’ve only been Prince Consort at most if he had married into PG’s kingdom. The other other explanation would MAYBE if he and Genevieve started their own kingdom, but again, he still looks nothing like Anneliese’s father so we’d have to go back to the idea he died or they divorced, neither of which are particularly good choices. However, I suppose that PG having a second husband isn’t entirely out of the question, because things can happen. But even if that were true, you have to specifically break canon and have her end up with someone else to make the theory work.

4. Speaking of kingdoms, Randolph’s kingdom and QG’s kingdoms and castles look nothing alike. And even if they did, Genevieve was 7th in line for her father’s throne. So if she rules that kingdom, then did 6 of her sisters die? Okay, you might be thinking, maybe she and Derek went and started their own kingdom. See the previous points again - then she couldn’t have ended up with Derek after all, because he would not have been called King. In addition, after everything King Randolph learned during 12DP, do you really think he would have just married his daughter off to another King?

5. Let’s observe another lesson from King Randolph - he finally took to heart what his beloved Isabella would tell him: their girls are unique and will each rule in their OWN princess ways, because there is no one way to be a princess. PG and her sisters were miserable with all the different “proper” etiquette they tried to learn. Do you really think PG would put her own daughter through the same kind of stifling lessons? Yes, as a princess, Anneliese would need to know some etiquette, of course. But some of her lessons (heard during “To Be a Princess”) include “never show a thing you feel inside”, “stay pleasant”, “be charming but detached and yet amused” (all at once!), “Don’t ever stray from protocol”, and “All through the day there’s just one day you must behave”. I don’t think PG would have her daughter follow those kinds of rules. Etiquette, yes, but not rules that would tell her to suppress her emotions or not to speak her mind.

6. PG knew almost immediately that something was up with Rowena, while QP was unfortunately fooled by Preminger for 10 entire years. Rowena was FAMILY, and yet Genevieve distrusted her almost from the start, even though it’s clear family is the most important thing to herself, her sisters, and their father. So I don’t believe PG would have gone a decade without sensing SOMETHING with Preminger. To think she would completely dismisses that piece of her canon personality. If anything, QG should be MORE protective of her own child because of what she herself went through. PG is more likely to turn into one of those overprotective mothers than one who would let someone like Preminger slip under the radar for nefarious deeds. And yes, I know Preminger was a master manipulator, but Rowena was good at that too. She easily fooled Randolph, the doctor, and basically everyone else into thinking she was doing what was best for the girls. Heck, even Ashlyn was initially doubtful to whether or not they should say something to their father.

7. Let’s stick with the idea that PG is running her own kingdom, fine. If that’s the case, why is her first idea to help her kingdom to marry Anneliese off? If she still has live family somewhere, surely she could ask for financial help. PatP was made before 12DP so of course that’s why there’s no mention of this kind of option, sure, but that’s actually another point in favor of debuking the theory - because again, you have to add more reasons of your own as to why she can’t just ask family for money. That means they either have to be all dead or unwilling to help her, leaving an arranged marriage as her only option. You can’t make this specific point work with just the details we already have.

In conclusion, you really can’t make this theory work without a lot of character assassination or lots of extra headcanon-ing and leaps in logic. By doing that, you really have to mess up PG’s life and make her miserable all over again - either half her sisters die, or she loses Derek, the boy who not only loved her, but also was the key to her and her sisters escaping the magic world (dancing together), and then STILL end up alone because her second husband dies too. So, lots of needless torturing. And for those of you thinking, “Well, it is a HEADCANON, so we can do whatever we want” and while that is true - there’s one more thing to consider. Theories need to be based on something more than just a name and a few physical traits. This theory has no ground to stand on without excessive rewriting of the canon. That is why it doesn’t work as a theory. I’m not saying “don’t headcanon things”, I’m saying “there isn’t enough evidence in the canons we are already presented to justify this theory”. If you still 100% believe this idea, then I ask you: how do you rewrite everything in PG’s future to turn her into QG? What further misery do you put her through to justify her entire personality shift as QG?

for you and @counselormills i believe who requested this, here we go...

besties... i have so many thoughts and feelings

(tw for marital rape & child abuse)

i know it's never really clarified in ouat's canon, but nothing's clarified in ouat's canon and nothing's consistent either so i'm just running with my little ideas in the same unbothered way the writers were (except you know, i'm doing it well)

so the concept that when you become the dark one, you sort of link minds with the past dark ones, gain their memories and knowledge and experience... wow that's super rich and complex and has so much potential for great storytelling i wonder why the writers DIDN'T EVER FOLLOW UP ON IT

(bc they're dumb)

in my headcanon these shared memories/knowledge is murky and inconsistent bc i think that's cool, but also it makes sense that the minds of the other dark ones were all unreliable narrators - their memories are underlined by their own feelings, wants, perceptions and fears

so when emma becomes the dark one she is hit with this dizzying lineage of memories and experiences she knows aren't hers, but at first she can barely sort them by which dark one they belong to, they are out of order and foggy and distorted, and it just feels like she's going crazy, like a headache, having to adapt to all of this...

so for a while she just doesn't. she does what emma swan does best: repress. she shoves it all down and powers throughs. after all, she has things to do.

but gradually repetitive images come back, threads of narratives of other people's lives, and she can't quite ignore them

and then, quite suddenly, a face she recognises - but not quite - and emma stops whatever she's doing abruptly, head aching because that's regina. that's her regina! but - she looks so young, barely more than a kid, and her hair is so long and she's in a castle and she's crying, she's scared, and emma wants to call out to her and help her because she hates seeing regina cry but - it's only a memory, and it's not even hers

she pushes it aside but it's freaked her out and intruiged her and suddenly, lying awake one night in camelot, emma realises she has more than just rumple's voice in her head now. she remembers vague words and brushed off questions, remembers that he has known regina mills for a very, very long time

the image comes back and emma, intrigued, can't help but keep chasing it

she sees a baby-faced regina curtseying clumsily, beautiful as she is now but with wide innocent eyes, and it almost makes her smile before it breaks her heart. 'i don't want to hurt anyone' regina protests in a tiny voice, and emma wants to run into the memory and push rumple away from her and keep her safe. but she can't.

so she just drifts deeper into memory, gradually becoming more and more angry at the cold tint that covers them all, at how rumple sees her as weak and pathetic and perfect for all he needs. she sees how alone regina is, leaning into his touch even as she shakes with fear, and emma's heart is breaking.

she doesn't know if she can handle all of this. she doesn't know if she wants more of these memories to come but she can't stop them. now she's started the whole road of memory stretches out in front of her and she cannot shut her eyes to it: that only makes them sharper

emma begins to understand rumple watched her for a long time. he knew when she'd been crying over daniel's body (emma swallows down her sickness at the feeling of rumple's glee, his satisfaction, that this is how broken he needs her). he knew when the king had called for her and left her fighting back tears and scrubbing her skin raw. (emma digs her nails into her palms til they bleed as she tries to reject his cold, cold appraisals, that this is the anger he needs from her).

he comes to her so perfectly, sometimes sweet and almost fatherly, sometimes cruel and pushing too hard, and emma watches her struggle with magic in a way she never would have believed knowing how skilled she is now

slowly, emma begins to understand some of these memories are out of order. because later, much later, she gets an image of a baby in her - his - arms, tiny eyes closed, a cold-eyed woman watching from the corner. she feels rumple's heart beat with hope. he has had this plan all this time, long before she was born, long before this woman broke his heart. it breaks emma's again now.

(and again, when she realises he watched her once or twice as a child too. emma gets only glimpses but what she gets makes her blood cold and fists clench - the same woman, more of the cora she recognises, striking a tiny dark-haired girl for some imagined crime, withholding and giving affection as carefully as rumple imitates later)

emma watches her, through rumple's cold calculating gaze. watches her try to run away and be trapped by her mothers confining spells. watches her try to throw herself off a balcony and be 'saved' by an interfering fairy. watches her tuck knives into her sleeves and then sit on her horrible bed breathing and do nothing with them. watches her cry into her pillow every night. watches her be left alone again and again, locked away, ignored, whispered about, raped and hurt and manipulated and used and she begins to understand everything with searing clarity, begins to regret every assumption and bad word and carelessly thrown out joke she ever made.

(and she feels rumple watch it all with mounting smugness and satisfaction and emma has never wanted to hunt him down and break his face more)

emma watches regina with wonder and fear and bated breath because she knows this only gets worse and worse. yet still, she finds fondness and awe and yes, love - she knows it's love now, has known since the darkness tried to take her and emma knew in a second she would lay down her own soul a thousand times over and never regret it - because this young regina is everything she glimpses once in a while. a sweet, kind soul who despite everything does not want to do harm. the kind of girl who falls asleep in the stables to nurse an injured horse, who brushes snow white's hair with gentle compliments and funny stories even as she fights back tears and intrusive thoughts and her knuckles turn white on the brush. the kind of girl who tries, tries, tries.

and emma sees, slowly, in starts and flashes over months and years, this light dim in her. she sees the pain and anger and fear take over, watches rumple and the king and the ghost of her mother and every other adult in her life who should have protected her stamp out the hope and scare away the gentleness.

she watches regina's power grow, day after day the ease with which fireballs flicker to her small palms, and emma feels rumple's pride mirrored in herself. she still doesn't support all the killing and murder, but she gets it now, she wonders if in the same shoes she would have done the same, wonders if there could be any other option.

(she feels, underneath it all, that rumple has always loved her in his own selfish way, this girl who should have been his daughter, this girl who he needs for his redemption and his revenge. emma wishes someone had loved her selflessly, in the way she deserved. someone does now, she reflects, but nothing can ever come of it, so she pushes it aside with the other memories)

emma watches rumple toy with regina even when she takes power, when she thinks she has it all. emma feels a shocking joy and satisfaction when regina kills the king - her own grandfather, she realises with sickness in her gut - and feels guilty that she ever felt sympathy for sidney. she begins to understand even as the evil queen regina was nothing more than a puppet on so many strings.

(she sees rumple grab her throat and threaten her and remembers their 'please' deal, and understands this was the case even in storybrooke, even when regina herself barely knew it)

and with all of this happening in her head, emma has to get about and go about her day and interact with her regina normally, when all she wants to do is squeeze her tight and tell her she understands now and she's sorry, sorry for everything. she has to force tight smiles at belle and pretend she isn't thinking of killing her husband every second of the day, in the back of her mind.

emma wants to reach out to regina more than ever but with everything else, she ends up pushing her further away. forcing neutral looks and casual smiles. avoiding her mother's eye when she mentions her wonderful father.

(and then regina has to look through a dreamcatcher to give emma a tear, and when emma sees the image whirling inside the strings she can't help the breath that escapes her because this girl, this eighteen year old regina screaming as her mother murders daniel before her eyes, is as familiar to her as the one sat across from her. and once again she just curls up her fists and murmurs how sorry she is.)

i like to think someday emma lets regina know she knows all of this, because regina's privacy and autonomy has rarely been respected, and now emma knows that better than anyone she doesn't want to contribute to that.

she just gently mentions one day, cuddled on the couch early on into their relationship, that she knows. when i was the dark one, i, we... our memories all kind of entwined. and regina stares back with wide eyes and processes, not sure she likes it, but emma kisses her hand and tells her it's okay and they never have to talk about it if she doesn't want to, and regina cuddles closer and is quiet for a long time

but she processes. she trusts emma to carry this knowledge, this intimate understanding of her more than anyone else. and gradually... it allows regina to talk about things with her that she can't, that she's never been able to before. to discuss triggers in a way that feels safe. to refer to her horrors and tragedies without going into graphic detail.

it's still strange for emma to have these memories. they dim after the darkness leaves her, and many of the ancient incoherant ones leave all together like a forgotten dream, but the ones that feature regina touched emma deeply, affected her in a way she doesn't think she'll ever forget.

but it's okay, because emma makes new memories of regina every day. much, much happier ones.

What made you ship it?

everything?? the enemies to lovers trope, the brunette/blonde thing, the rich entitled fary tale queen x rugged abandoned orphan with a jail past, the Childhood Trauma they could help each other with so well, the wonderful fucking family they are together with Henry.... not to mention the simple fact that if either one of them had been a man, they'd have been canon from the very beginning, cue Emma ending up with a dark evil-past dude who wears even more eyeliner than Regina, and Regina's boyfriend being a Good and Pure person who loves to shoot arrows and live in the woods???? as i was saying, EVERYTHING.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

the evolution in their dynamics throughout the show, the fact that they always help and understand each other, and I think mostly the way they used to tear each other apart over Henry before they realized he was what united them. i really love the fact that they give everything to that son they share to prevent him ever going through what they had to go through as kids.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

i don't think so? but it's been years since i've seen some meta takes that i might disagree with so i may simply not remember

Why don't you ship it?

for one, i never really cared about the beauty and the beast tale. and part of the rumbelle journey reminds me of some very toxic relationships i had when i was younger, so it's just really Fun all around with them isn't it.

What would make you like it?

if Rumple had stopped lying every single time he promised belle not to do so anymore? like, dude was all about her being his true love and shit, and then he'd turn around and betray everything he swore to her, each fucking time without fail. by the end i didn't even feel angry anymore i was jut like, ooh this shit again.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

i don't really? i mean i liked both characters separately though, like Rumple was an asshole but i liked him as a villain, and i liked the few times Belle got to have a personality that didn't revolve around him (esp loved her cursed personality, and shipped her hard with Red lmao)!
