Another day, another time to debunk shitty takes I see online.
I've seen a multiple of people pointing out that "we don't know anything about Tommy" and how could people ship him with Buck (nevermind that the ship is canon and always will remain so) when we know so little about him?
First of all, I'd actually make a point to say that we as of now already know more about him then all the other LI that Buck or Eddie ever had in the show.
I shall make you a list, so that you may remember it more easily:
- He likes cars and he's a good mechanic (extrapolated by the fact that Eddie explicitly said that fixed/improved his engine)
- He likes playing basketball and he's also quite competitive ("we'll make short work of them" said in reference of Buck and Chim)
- He's sarcastic (the closet line)
- His favourite film is "Love, Actually"
- He loves Monster Truck and Craft Beer, and MMA
- He has a big scar on his chest and it came from a fire in a factory
- He's a very skilled pilot, able to manoeuvre in a hurrican, and doesn't waver in the face of danger
- He likes watching and practicing Muay Thai
- He was a pilot in the army
- He only came out when he started working in Harbor, but prefers not to publicise his sexuality
- He doesn't like Bella Swan (and it's implied he might like Jacob more) and he watched the Twilight movies
- He likes to drive his friends to events
- He has friends that can get him high up tickets for shows in Vegas
- He has permission to fly airplanes for personal reasons when he's not on the clock
- He likes to be helpful and he's thoughtful (driving Eddie to check out his sprain, going to Buck's to clear out the air without prompt, immediately agreeing in helping the 118 with the whole ship operation, trying to get Buck to be at ease on their date)
- He's loyal (he didn't rat the others out when the chief called on their way to Bobby)
- He's a smooth flirt
- He can do a mean mouth static (at least in his opinion)
- He pays the bill on first dates
- He is very much the definition of carpe diem (kissing buck was very much shooting his shot)
- He checks for consent
- He kept contact with Chim ever after he left the 118
- Chim called him for help in the episode Broken
- He went to the 217 and opened the spot for Buck at the 118
- He participated in the betting pool Hen made on how long Bobby would last at the 118 captain
- He apologises when he's in the wrong and is shown to be able to correct his behaviour
- He doesn't like chickens (lol)
- He likes the film fight club and can quote it
- Implies to have dated people he met on a call
See? We know quite a lot actually. So you may get off your high horse how about that.
I don't think I missed anything but do let me know.

If Tommy hadn't kissed Buck in 7x04 I don't think Buck would have realized he was attracted to him. Oliver has said that Buck has felt this way before and Buck has always been bisexual, he just didn't realize it and it was the kiss that prompted that realization, not just Buck's crush on Tommy. If it was just the crush on Tommy Buck would have realized he was bisexual way earlier.
Just today Oliver said that Buck was probably attracted to Eddie when he first met him and he didn't know what those feelings were or how to process them, so he acted out.
The difference between Buck meeting Eddie and Buck meeting Tommy is that Tommy is queer and knows it and can see the signs and signals that Buck didn't even realize he was putting out there so he kissed Buck. That was the moment Buck realized he wasn't straight.
And throughout the episode Buck is shown to be jealous of not just Tommy, but also of Eddie. There are so many moments in that episode that make you wonder who he's jealous of and why.
Is he jealous of Eddie for spending time with Tommy, this cool new person they met? Yeah. Is he jealous of Tommy for spending time that he views as his with Eddie? Yep. Is he concerned that Tommy might be taking his place in not just Eddie's life, but in Christoper's? Yes. Is he just general confused because he's feeling some type of way that he really doesn't understand? For sure.
It isn't as cut and dry as "Tommy was Buck's bisexual awakening" full stop, because we've heard Oliver say that Buck has always been bi he just understands it now. We've heard him say that Buck was attracted to Eddie when he first met him but didn't understand it. We heard Buck tell Maddie he checks out hot guys asses.
I fully believe that if Tommy hadn't kissed Buck in the loft that night that Buck would have written his weird feelings off as just new friend stuff like he probably felt for Eddie and has felt for other men but didn't understand and eventually he would have gotten over it.
Tommy's kiss was the catalyst for Buck realizing he isn't straight, but it wasn't just Tommy that made that realization possible - it was Buck's entire life that did. It was him talking to his sister and her affirming him and helping him understand that checking out a hot guys ass isn't abnormal, but it isn't straight. It was Buck looking back at his past feelings for men and realizing that they're similar to the crush he has on Tommy.
And this isn't me devaluing Tommy in Buck's coming out arc, because without that kiss Buck likely wouldn't be here yet. But I think saying it was all about Tommy and Buck's jealousy in 7x04 was only about Tommy is doing a disservice to the nuance of the episode and Buck's sexuality in general.

buck walked through fire because evan never felt like he was good enough. buck is the protective armor around that wounded child that felt unloved and unwanted. that felt like he was defective. tommy only calling him "evan" is a signal to the audience that buck's realization about his sexuality is a step in his journey to healing that child who never felt good enough or truly loved, who always felt like there was something missing even if he couldn't quite put a finger on what it was. and it's also a signal to buck that evan has always been good enough and deserving of love.

Can't stop thinking how after Buck asked A*by be on Chim's 1s welcome back party he never really asked his girlfriends into 118 parties again. Yes, Taylor was on the breakfast after treasure hunt and then on the Christmas, but first one more likely was just because they all talked about how this guy tricked them and it would be strange not to ask her to come when it was Christmas. But we really never normally saw her around 118, yet she knew how they all are close. And Ali and Natalia NEVER was around 118. they weren't asked by Buck to get close to 118.
But now with Tommy? He asks him to come to the wedding almost immediately and he doesn't even need to be somehow bridge between Tommy and 118. Tommy connected to them all without Buck, to all except Karen and Maddie. He even kind of knows Athena. Buck already immerses his new partner into his family, because he knows his family likes Tommy and I also think it's because he knows this connection between 118 will not scare Tommy. Tommy knows how they are, he saw it, he even wanted to be part of it and Buck give Tommy that opportunity to already have 118 as his family even so early in their relationship

you know what, eddie was probably losing it/letting go during the bachelor party because he's never actually had the chance to do anything like that before. and while buck had a chance maybe at some point during his travels to do something similar, this is probably the first time he's doing it with someone whose company he enjoys to the fullest. and that's kinda wholesome in itself

been thinking about buck throwing himself into things with tommy a little too fast and a little too all at once and like. it makes so much sense. it's a subconscious act of self preservation. somewhere deep down a part of buck knows that if he didn't have someone to focus this new part of himself on, someone to distract him from the depths of this revelation about himself, it would find its center with eddie. some part of him knows that if he were to stop and take a breath now he would end up thinking a little too hard about who eddie is to him and what he feels for him with this new knowledge of his bisexuality. and he can't do that. not right now. this is shiny and new and exciting and full of joy. it doesn't need to get so complicated so soon. and he definitely can't do it when eddie has someone. can't condemn himself to pining for someone he loves so deeply he doesn't even realise how far it goes yet. so he throws himself into things with tommy because he likes tommy and tommy is safe where eddie is every risk worth taking.

Buddie: Return of "The Couch Theory"
Buddie shippers HEARD AND SAW "The Couch Theory" in action last season only for F*X (yeah, I'm blaming them) to have the show end the season by trying to make the audience feel like we were seeing, hearing and/or making things up.
But the truth is it was REAL!
IYKYK the theory started way back in season 2 (linked here) but it was actually mentioned with regards to Buck's relationships in season 6.
Last season, the theory started in 6x1 when Chris said, "Buck, you don't even have a couch" (family, relationship; but he did have one with Eddie and Chris and they were sitting right in front of him) and it continued until 6x18 when it all went to $hit 🙄 after Natalia was shoehorned in as Buck's LI and he asked her to help him find a new one.
Anyway, all three members of the Buckley-Diaz family slept on it in different episodes.
Eddie slept on it in 6x9.
Tumblr media
Buck slept on it in 6x12.
Tumblr media
Chris slept on it in 6x15.
Tumblr media
Please note, they were all in different spots while they were sleeping (Eddie was lying down but his head was on the right side [when someone's facing it], Chris was in the middle and Buck was on the left).
Regardless of what will be said, the return of "The Couch Theory" will be interesting and hopefully with the way everything else has been explained or alluded to in OS's interviews over the last several days, only time will tell if what we already know is validated like the shooting, Buck's first impression of Eddie was and the other gazillion things we've all known were true since the beginning but once again F*X probably prevented it from being included in the episodes.
Now, only the interviewer and OS know what's included in the interview that will be published tomorrow but I'm posting this to prove "The Couch Theory" was/is real, we all saw it and interpreted it the way it was presented.

Me rambling like a madman to my coffee maker: no but if the will reveal and the fight Eddie and Shannon have at the station in merry exmas have the same color palette, and all of this is the same concept, then what does it all mean? Because it's all about Eddie trusting someone he loves with Chris and the way Shannon was only getting Eddie but Buck thinks he's only getting Christopher, but Eddie is actually offering everything, hence the way Eddie matches the background and isn't using movement to run from a conversation he didn't want to have, because he's basically literally running away from Shannon because he doesn't want to be forced to say it and he is sitting down and starting the conversation with Buck. And you have the way Eddie stands out in the warm lighting of the station in contrast to the lighting of the hospital, so can we argue a level of awareness of what he's doing actually means from Eddie based on previous interactions and the way that Shannon wanted a stance on their relationship based on being allowed to get Christopher back, so he thinks that offering Christopher is the stance into a relationship that shows that he's ready to work for it?

the way tommy reassures buck that no one is looking at them, that nobody cares about what they're doing, but also tells him that he gets why he's tense. he doesn't invalidate his feelings while trying to soothe him. the way he gives buck the space he needs to ask questions he hasn't felt like he could ask anyone else, and answers them patiently and gracefully. the way he flirts with him and even in that, he is kind. he is gentle. he checks for reactions and respects that buck has just started his journey while he's been on his own for years. tommy i love you... i love queer solidarity

wait eddie finding someone with similar interests actually goes beyond buck's jealousy or anything else because he's finding someone who embraces these parts of him that that previously were framed around his trauma (or rather, he's finding someone to embrace these parts with, even if tommy isn't necessarily aware):
the army
helicopters
mma/fighting
cars
like...this isn't just him getting a new friend. it's also him embracing all these things as hobbies rather than the depths of things he struggled with. (army, being shot out of the sky, street fighting, crashing his dad's truck/buying one with illegal money, etc)
anyway im gonna go cry about him

“My attention?”
That line for me says a lot of things. His face looks like he’s contemplating things and I don’t think it’s just one thing he’s questioning.
MY attention? You wanted to get MY attention? This was about me and not Eddie?
My ATTENTION? This is flirting, he’s flirting with me and he wants my attention bc he’s flirting.
I think he wasn’t prepared for Buck to be so straightforward, they were flirting but it was less what they were saying and more How they were saying it. Making plans to spend time can be normal friends but the slowly getting closer and the way they were talking makes it flirting. But that is very different than just stating Hey I’m Interested In You like Buck did. He’s checking that he’s picking up exactly what Buck is putting down, that he’s not misreading this before he makes the big move.
And yeah there is an element of Me? Not Eddie? But I think that’s also him double checking that he’s not about to start a disaster, that this is what Buck wants.
Tommy might seem more sure of himself but I think he still needed Buck to say exactly what he was feeling and wanting before he was willing to fully put himself out there.

Tommy may have been the first man buck actively realized he was attracted to, but he has found other men attractive in the past(which is why he was checking them out) and he will find other men attractive in the future his bisexuality exists outside of Tommy
You are purposefully misunderstanding me. I never said that Buck didn't found other man attractive in the past (since he also admits to it in canon "I've checked out other man's asses but that's normal") or that he won't find other men attractive in the future outside of Tommy.
I'm saying that the realisation and start of questioning his sexuality and coming to understand that he's in fact bisexual, only started because of Tommy. Without Tommy, in canon, we wouldn't be here. You can whine and cry about it, but it's just how it is.
Tommy is Buck's bi awakening. Buck's realisation of his bisexuality came from meeting Tommy. Ofc his bisexuality is not all centered on Tommy and that it's something it was always within him, but we are talking about an awakening here.
To be awaken you need something or someone to wake you up, anon.

Thinking about the fact that we really only see Eddie from Bucks POV in 7x04. Thinking about how silly and goofy and smiley and happy he is when we do. Thinking about the fact that this is how Buck sees Eddie.
Also thinking about the fact that in the firehouse scene we never see Eddie looking at buck, even though in other episodes Eddie is almost constantly gazing at Buck. Thinking about how Buck likely misses those glances, how Eddie likely looks away before Buck can notice.
Thinking a lot about Buddie

In all the excitement about bi!Buck, (which— yay! Amazing! Very exciting! No notes!) I think there’s a part of this story we’re missing. I haven’t seen anyone talk about it, so have some rambling.
It wasn’t just Buck who looked at this experienced, older, queer man and wanted to know him. It was also Eddie.
We have never seen Eddie go so hard, so immediately for anyone. To the point his best friend of years felt like he was being ignored by him. Yes, Buck wanted Tommy’s attention for obvious reasons. But he was also slighted by the perceived lack of attention from Eddie.
Suddenly, Eddie is spending multiple times a week going out with this man. Going to Vegas with this man. Working out with him, working on his car with him, doing karaoke and trivia night with him? Asking his alleged girlfriend to babysit more than once so that he can go out with Tommy? Obviously, it was from jealous!Buck’s point of view, but seriously. If Buck felt ignored, what is Marisol even thinking? Did Eddie bother to make time for his new girlfriend? What spare time would he even have if they work several 24 hour shifts and he’s also gone out with Tommy at least three times in one week? And is probably planning more?
Not that I think Eddie’s feelings for Tommy are necessarily in the same vein as Buck’s feelings for Tommy. But my gosh, Eddie giggly and kicking his feet and twirling his hair while on the phone with Tommy was so very loud. And actually a pretty neat contrast to being distracted and trying to text Marisol “hey mari it me eddie” to ask her out. Eddie’s sudden infatuation with Tommy was a thousand times more than anything we’ve seen from him for anyone. Considering that what he stated he wanted was the magical chemistry he’d found when he and Shannon got together, like… is that not what he just found with Tommy?
Again, it doesn’t necessarily mean Eddie has any explicit romantic or sexual attraction toward Tommy. I suppose he could? But the point is more that wow, there is some kind of intense draw pulling Eddie to him even if we interpret it as platonic.
Buck says at the end of the ep that they met this guy and he was so cool and Buck wanted to get to know him. Which makes sense given that Buck is canonically crushing on him and going to be dating him. But Eddie was actually the one who got there first. Eddie also had a reaction somewhere along those lines of “he’s really cool, I need to know him” to the point where he’s all of a sudden spending most if not all of his free time with him.
And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this person Eddie wants to spend time with is an experienced, out queer man who is comfortable in his own sexuality and his own masculinity. (He has so much in common with Eddie! They have so many similar interests! They have a magical click together that makes Eddie want to be around him all the time! There’s so much they can do together!)
Eddie might not have even known it, maybe in the same way Buck also didn’t know it, but Eddie definitely latched onto that, too. Which is very interesting, no? Very— queers finding each other and bonding over shared experiences even before they know that’s what they’re doing.
It can easily be someone who is likely confused about their own feelings but knows they are having certain feelings just not the names to put to those feelings, and consequently seeking guidance and reassurance that there are other people who are just like them who have these feelings as well. It’s realizing how they can be themselves, that they can be queer in a way that fits who they are instead of what they might conceptualize as queer because of stereotypes and preconceived notions. It’s learning you can be you and also be queer. That there are people like you out there.
Eddie found something with Tommy that he hasn’t been shown to have found anywhere else. It’s a new and different thing for him, too. And if it were just about excitement over a new friend, why is it so much so quickly all at once? Eddie’s a social person. He’s a friendly, charming, charismatic person. He has friends. But it feels like this is a very different sort of friendship for him.
And the fact that this is the same man who just gave Buck his bisexual awakening is verrrry inch resting.
Also regardless of what kind of feelings Eddie and Tommy might have been having for each other, they were so going on dates. Flying someone to Vegas because you have tickets that have been sold out for weeks to something they enjoy? Like damn Eddie. You pulled a sugar daddy.
Anyway. Eddie is queer, too. Double sexuality awakenings, ready go!
That is all! 💕

The little moment I don't think we talked about. During madney x henren 7x5 moment there's 0 sadness in Maddie's words about shrinking Jee to smaller sizes. She says it with smile and with the same intonation most of the parent use when they miss the times their babies were smaller and they can't believe how big they are now. But we know Maddie missed some of the moments of Jee being this small like the clothes they were packing, but she doesn't think about it. She is now thinking about memories she has and she can make, because no matter how hard it was and maybe not best decision to run, it anyway gave Maddie the healing she needed to not become how her parents and not woke up 30 years after finally trying to make amends with her kid when it's too much time missed and just can't be gotten back. She has so much time with Jee NOW because she found her way to heal herself . Maddie has her time with Jee to see here getting bigger and cherish every memory she can
And yes I still think this scene was foreshadowing for new madney baby
