Chimney: Hello, Diazes!
Eddie: Shhh, it's nap time.
Chimney, blinking: Chris is right there playing his video game.
Chris: Hey, Uncle Chimney.
Eddie, rolling his eyes: Who said anything about Chris?
Buck: *currently drooling on Eddie's lap without a care in the world*

Buck: Why is there so much blood on the ground??
Eddie: *Scrubbing the floor* I inadvertently performed an emergency appendectomy earlier today.
Buck: Eddie, what the fuck does that even mean?
Eddie: It means I accidentally stabbed someone, Buck. Please, get the bleach.

Buddie and Madney: Dad Buck and Uncle Buck-Part 1 of 4
Part 1: The drop off
Buck had the opportunity to take care of both his son Christopher and his niece Jee-Yun on two separate occasions.  He is a great dad and uncle; he loves both of them and he wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice his own life to save them if they were in danger.  Buck’s role in their lives shouldn’t be misunderstood because he’s a dad to Christopher and he’s an uncle to Jee-Yun.  Buck is Christopher’s legal guardian/second dad but it should be noted that he and Eddie were already co-parenting Christopher long before Eddie changed his will.  Also Buck and Christopher had already developed a bond in season 2 that was highlighted during Buck’s welcome back to the 118 party in 3x1 “Kids Today” when Christopher gave Buck the card that he made for him.  Buck is Jee-Yun’s uncle because Maddie is Buck’s sister.  Therefore, the way Eddie dropped off Christopher so that he could spend the day with Buck in 3x1 “Kids Today” was completely different from the way Maddie and Chimney dropped off Jee-Yun in 6x8 “9-1-1 What’s Your Fantasy?” and the different drop off methods clearly illustrate Buck’s distinct roles in both children’s lives.
The drop off
Eddie didn’t prearrange or schedule anything and he didn’t call Buck to let him know that he was going to be at his loft in 3x1.  Eddie simply let himself into Buck’s loft with his key, he took Christopher into the living room, proceeded to go upstairs to Buck’s bedroom to wake him up and he didn’t tell him that he brought their son Christopher with him.  Buck was surprised to learn that Christopher was there once he went downstairs and he didn’t know Eddie was going to leave Christopher with him until Eddie said, “He’s hanging out with his Buck today. Cause I have to go to work”.  Eddie didn’t ask Buck to watch Christopher, he told him to take him out and have some fun so that he could learn something.  He didn’t bring any food or money because Buck is Christopher’s other dad and Eddie was basically saying, ‘You’re going to take care of our son today so that you will feel better because you can’t keep moping around here.  I’m worried about you so take our son out and have some fun then text me some pictures of the two of you so that I can show everyone at work that you’re doing ok’.  They communicated with each other the same way separated spouses do who have joint custody of their son.  There was no arguing between Buck and Eddie during the drop off and Eddie just left after he told Buck that Christopher was spending the day with him.  Then Buck looked at Christopher and said, “So, what do you like to do for fun?” and Chris looked at him like ‘I don’t know. Whatever you want to do’.  When Hen asked Eddie in 3x2 “Sink or Swim” how operation Buck up Buck was going, Eddie proceeded to pull out his phone to show Hen and Chimney the picture Buck sent him of the two of them while they were having breakfast.  Please note that Eddie’s behavior during the drop off with Buck was that of a HUSBAND/SPOUSE and not the behavior of a best friend, a brother, a platonic friend, a bromance or even a work partner.  Buck’s behavior mimicked Eddie’s because he cared for Christopher the exact same way that Eddie does.
Maddie prearranged everything with Buck because she scheduled it with him far in advance in 6x8 since she knew that she and Chimney would be going house hunting.  Therefore, Buck was expecting them and he already had things setup at his loft for Jee-Yun’s arrival.  Maddie and Chimney knocked on the door, waited for Buck to answer it and didn’t enter until after Buck took Jee-Yun from Maddie.  Maddie told Buck that she had already fed Jee breakfast, that her diaper had been changed and that she should be good until lunch. Chimney walked over to the counter, placed the lunch cooler on top of it and proceeded to take Jee’s lunch and other snacks out of the bag.  He gave Buck specific instructions about Jee’s eating habits regarding the organic chicken nuggets and he also explained how she was currently in the “terrible twos” stage.  They chatted a bit about the house hunt then Chimney told Maddie they needed to leave.  Maddie asked Buck before they left if he was sure he would be ok spending the whole day with Jee and he said that he would because he was living the dream by spending the whole day with his favorite girl.  Maddie and Chimney’s behaviors with Buck were that of a SISTER and a soon to be BROTHER-IN-LAW who dropped their daughter off to spend the day with her uncle.  Buck’s behavior with Jee was that of an uncle and he said several times that Jee was his niece.  Therefore the difference between the way Eddie completed the drop off process when compared with the way Maddie and Chimney did it, illustrates Buck’s role in Chris’ and Jee’s lives; he’s a dad to Chris and an uncle to Jee.
Part 2 will be posted soon.

things from the tsunami arc that altered my brain chemistry irrevocably and eternally:
buck's hand twisted in christopher's shirt pre-wave
you're gonna be okay, kid and the hand on buck's face
the way buck cups christopher's head when he's finally got him in his arms
and the way he clings to christopher as soon as they're up on the fire truck for the rest of the episodes, always keeping chris nestled against his side or tucked under his chin whenever he's not saving people
how he freezes when he hears christopher fall in and just Knows its chris
buck finding christopher's glasses
the fact that we see the moment buck cuts himself and he doesn't even react because he's too heartbroken to feel anything else besides the grief
do i even need to mention buck carrying himself through most of LA on willpower alone?
or the black tent?
or buck calling maddie and not even worrying about telling eddie, just worrying about christopher, until he sees him at the VA hospital?
or how eddie nods as buck stammers through his explanation like he believes that its not buck's fault even as his heart is breaking over losing his child?
or the way buck hands eddie christopher's glasses?
or he was looking for buck?
how about the way eddie presses his forehead to christopher's temple?
and the Look between buck and eddie? buck, disbelieving, relieved, just utterly and completely relieved because whatever happens next, even if he never gets to see his diaz boys again, at least christopher is alive. and eddie, disbelieving, relieved, entirely and wondrously in awe of the man that kept his son safe and alive despite a tsunami.
and buck collapsing because finally, finally his job is done. nothing else matters now.
not to mention!!! the After
wait for me to come home my beloved <3
buck's whole voiceover
the way chris walks into the loft and rests his head against buck's stomach, trusting him to wrap him in a hug, and the way buck hesitates like he's not sure he's allowed
eddie pushing in, eddie, the strong silent type, filling the silence that buck would usually to try to drown (poor choice of words, i admit) out whatever thoughts are going through buck's head as he tries to object to being left alone
eddie's instantaneous, easy switch from nonchalant teasing to serious reassuring
two men five centimetres apart because they are gay!
eddie's hand on buck's shoulder and the fucking thumb on his neck... kill me :D
eddie being honest and vulnerable about his parenting
i love him enough to never stop trying and i know you do too because of course eddie has just had more than enough evidence of that, and not just evidence but tsunami-proof evidence that buck would quite literally go to the ends of the earth for christopher, but this quote, buddie or not, links buck to christopher, to that co-parent role, indefinitely and irrefutably
eddie's little comment about buck losing weight (sir... why are you paying so much attention 🤨)
and FUCK, perhaps the worst of them all, eddie pausing in the doorway, one hand on the doorframe, eyes down as he says buck's name and that little moment of hesitation before he looks up and says thank you. for not giving up.

the lie that eddie catches christopher in is that he’s been telling everyone in his new class that buck and eddie are married because he’s tired of having to explain how he has two dads but they’re just “best friends”. in this essay i will—

one of my fav little buddie moments is the ‘can’t you both be good cops?’ and buck and eddie going ‘no’ TOGETHER and then EVERYONE LOOKING BACK AT THEM??? like sometimes i think the rest of the firefam don’t realize how important buck is to eddie and christopher (and vice versa). but then again—how could they? they get slices of their lives. they get the grocery store fight and buck taking care of chris during the shooting and then eddie when he was breaking down but they don’t GET IT. they don’t get that buck is in eddie’s will. they don’t get that eddie’s kind of therapy is playing video games with his boys. they don’t get that chris runs away to buck when things get hard. ‘his buck’ ‘there’s no one i trust with my son more than you’ ‘i love him enough to keep trying and i know you do too’ ‘christopher already in bed?’ ‘buck, can we play video games at your house?’ ‘eddie’ ‘eddie’ ‘eddie’ ‘eddie’ all of these private moments. do they know buck found carla for eddie? i’m sure they assume, but do they get how much that means for eddie? for someone who was assuming he’d land in la with no support system (beside his grandmother and tia pepa)? buck arranged the christmas lunch for the whole crew but none of them get that it was because chris asked to spend the holiday with him. there’s so much in that little moment. for buck and eddie it’s so casual—a throwaway comment at best—but for everyone else it’s a glimpse into the lives of their little family. it makes me emotional.

Buddie and Madney: Dad Buck and Uncle Buck-Part 3 of 4
Part 3: Christopher’s second drop off and the pickup of Jee-Yun
Since Buck and Christopher got caught in a Tsunami in 3x2 “Sink or Swim” while they were on the pier and they got separated from each other, Eddie wasn’t able to go back to Buck’s loft to pick up Christopher.  But he did take Chris back to Buck’s loft so that Buck could take care of him again in 3x3 “The Searchers”.  Eddie knocked on the door instead of using his key so that Buck could let them in and when Buck opened the door Christopher said, “Hey Buck”, hugged him and Buck replied, “Hey Buddy”.  Eddie said, “Good Morning Buck” then he proceeded to walk past Buck so that he could sit Christopher’s lunch and toys on the counter.  He left twenty dollars for them to get a pizza for lunch and he told Buck to eat a couple of extra slices since it looked like he was losing weight.  Buck was shocked to see them and it caused him to ask Eddie if he wanted him to watch Chrstopher after everything that happened.  Eddie said that a natural disaster happened and Buck told him that he lost Christopher but Eddie responded that he saved him because that’s how Chris remembered it.  Eddie told Buck that he knew he loved Christopher the same way he does and then he said, “There’s nobody in this world I trust with my son more than you”.  Eddie walked into the living room, hugged Chris, said goodbye to him and then he told Buck to take him some place inland like the zoo.  Before he left, he thanked Buck for not giving up and then Buck walked over and sat next to his son and they both smiled at each other.  Buck and Christopher already had a bond prior to the Tsunami but after they went through that natural disaster together, their bond became even stronger.  Buck cares for Christopher the exact same way that Eddie does and that was long before Eddie added Buck to his will as Christopher’s legal guardian.  Buck and Eddie’s interactions during the second drop off further illustrated how they not only co-parent Christopher but how they are also HUSBANDS/SPOUSES.
When Maddie and Chimney returned to Buck’s loft in 6x8 “9-1-1 What’s Your Fantasy?” to pick up Jee-Yun, Chimney asked Buck where Jee was and Buck explained that she was upstairs asleep because he was finally able to convince her to take a nap.  Maddie asked him, “So how was she? Good I hope.” and Buck responded that she wasn’t the only one who needed a nap.  Maddie and Chimney’s interactions with Buck after they returned from their house hunt were the same as they were before they left Jee with Buck so that he could babysit; they’re Jee’s parents and Buck’s her uncle.  Buck’s role in Christopher’s life is different from his role in Jee-Yun’s life.  Of course he wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice himself for both of them but he’s a second father to Christopher and it’s been shown many times over in CANON.  Part 4 of this series will include some examples to illustrate that fact.  His role as uncle to Jee has also been shown several times in CANON and examples of those times will also be included in part 4.  Buck is a second dad to Christopher and an uncle to Jee-Yun.
