Rengoku Shinjuro x GN! Reader
Officer Rengoku is a regular in the coffee shop you work at.
Tags: fluff, flirting, modern AU, young police officer Shinjuro (thus OOC) Word count: 0,7k
Masterlist
AN: Written as birthday piece for Rengoku Shinjuro. He doesn't have an official birthday date, but I have accepted @/shinjuro-rengoku-ask's HC (23rd January).
Tumblr media
Rengoku Shinjuro had many dreams in his life. When young, he had wanted to impress his father - an impossible feat, more so given the fact he passed away when Shinjuro was in his teen years. Afterwards, he wanted to make his mother happy - he spent hours striving towards that ideal, to be the son she could be proud of. He wanted to support his brother in achieving his own dreams.
Sometimes, dreams were too grand a name for what he wanted. For example, now he wished to be rid of the newbie he was stuck with, but that was impossible, at least for the day, so he had to settle for wanting coffee. Call him unmanly but he enjoyed a good latte on any day.
“This has to be my favorite place to get coffee,” Shinjuro remarked to the newbie as they walked to the door. The queue was short and there wasn’t anyone sitting down; the duo would also take their coffees to-go, as they had to patrol the center just a few streets away. “It’s good and the service is…” he trailed off, catching sight of you as you served a tired student their coffee.
Another one of his wishes - for you to agree to a date with him.
“Senpai?”
Shinjuro cleared his throat, annoyed for getting interrupted in his routine admiration of your person. “As I was saying, coffee is good.” He didn’t elaborate.
The line moved up, the newbie commenting on the muffin selection as Shinjuro tried to discreetly wipe his palms. It wouldn’t do to appear like an untried rookie when he talked to you.
“Good morning, sir. What can I get for you today?”
The way you called him sir did things to him - which he swiftly buried in the far corners of his mind as he ordered his usual latte, thoughts and senses filled with coffee.
“Sugar?”
Shinjuro gave you an alluring smile and replied, “No, thank you. Your sweetness is all I need.” Your lips spread into a shy smile, eyes darting behind him as the last customer before them left before focusing on the police officer again. Officer Rengoku was sun incarnated - hot with blazing eyes to match his visage. He started flirting with you a few weeks ago, but you couldn’t reciprocate, as there were always other people around. Perhaps today would present an opportunity?
You went about making Shinjuro’s latte and his colleague’s americano; you really hoped he would drop by later as well, seeing him in his uniform was… exquisite.
The americano done faster, his colleague walked outside to wait for Shinjuro while you focused on making a little something with his foam. You had been trying out different animals recently and you felt like you could nail what you had in mind today.
Sure enough, it came out perfectly. You presented the paper cup with a proud smile and offered a cap for it, which he took but didn’t put on.
“Your latte art is always beautiful,” he said as he studied the swan you made for him. “Elegant  and charming, just like you.”
Blood rushed to your cheeks at the compliment, and you tried to hide how flustered the comment made you; the way you clenched your apron with your hands gave you away though.
Shinjuro gave you a smug smile, sipping his latte and licking his lips enticingly. Tsk.
Mischief previously concealed buzzed underneath your skin, and a flirtatious remark made its way past your lips without your mind being able to stop it. “If you were a coffee,” you leaned in slowly, your hands laying on the counter, your eyes becoming hooded, as if you were under the influence of his charm, and he leaned in too, as if you were to tell him a great secret, “you would be a triple shot of espresso, because you're strong, bold and you make my heart race.”
Bright red blush spread across his cheeks and Shinjuro blinked a few times, surprise painting over the usual smile he bore. It was delightful. You grinned fiendishly. Oh how the tables have turned.
With a hasty thank you and an even deeper flush, he nearly ran out, like an untried rookie.
You were bad for his heart.
…he had to return in the afternoon and ask you out properly.

Psst, be quiet and listen carefully. Do you hear them? They whisper very softly but if you concentrate, you can hear them. They whisper stories to me at night. Stories about different people. Normal, average people. But what makes these people so different, so…special, enough for stories to be told of them? They all had a special encounter. I don't know what exactly they've encountered, but it must be special enough for Them to whisper it to me. Every night they've been whispering and I couldn't get them to stop. Not until now.
As of now, they told me exactly 11 stories about 11 people and I managed to write them all down. Listen. They're whispering harshly now. They’re chanting something: Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them. Read Them.
The Visitor (Geto S., JJK) nsfw(sexual), hinted at gore
You shouldn’t feel that you must always welcome every visitor who comes to see you.
2. Stories (Tengen U., KNY)
Even if you don’t know why they’re here, you hold the greatest amount of fear for them.
3. Peripheral (Connie S., AOT)
When you see something just beyond your peripheral vision, you may be inclined to take a closer look. But it’s also best not to do so.
4. Friend (Gojo S., JJK) nsfw(suggestive)
Do you have a friend that pulls you by the hand even before they ask you to join them? Why does that never bother you?
5. Guardian Angel (Shinjuro R., KNY)
The feeling that something’s invading your privacy, even without ill will, is still disturbing.
6. Prey (Jean K., AOT)
If someone is coming after us and drawing nearer, what can we do?
7. Peek (Toji F., JJK)
Am I under the delusion that I’m lonely? Perhaps I feel the opposite in reality.
8. Customers (Haganezuka H., KNY)
A crowd of people in a place where inexplicably strange people roam..That is a scene that will stay in your mind.
9. Dark (Reiner B., AOT)
As your eyes try to get accustomed to the darkness, have you ever tried to stare into your room?
10. Overtime (Nanami K., JJK)
Having no worries would mean an obstacle-free life. Unfortunately, I do worry.
11. Attention (Eren J., AOT)
When you inadvertently get the attention of something you don’t want, what do you do?

You were the tenth hashira. The Wisteria Pillar to be exact. You were proposed to by Kyojuro Rengoku. And you were planning your wedding.
Kyojuro had been called for a mission, apprently, according to his crow, many people had been seen entering the train, but never coming back out. They had sent out demon slayers, but none of them came back either.
"(Name)! Do you wanna accompany me on a mission?" "Oh sure! When are we leaving?" "about hmm... Less than an hour, but I wanna visit Senjuro and my father before I leave! Do you also wanna come with me?" "Of course! Your brother is adorable!" you laughed and so did he.
After your short journey to the Flame estate, you caught sight of Senjuro outside, sweeping. "Hey Senjuro!" you yelled, making Senjuro look up and wave with a shy smile on his face. Kyojuro smiled at his younger brother's shyness. Senjuro then jumped in Kyojuro's arms and swung him playfully, making you all laugh.
"Do you two want something to eat? I was already making lunch for Father and I think I might have gone overboard with the cooking because I had so much food and I don't think he and I could eat it all by ourselves!" he said, scratching the nape of his neck in embarrassment, but you only grinned. "Of course! Your cooking is amazing, I don't think I could ever decline your cooking, Senjuro!" Kyojuro cheered, and you only nodded in agreement.
There was laughing, the crunching of the food, and the happy era in the room. "I'm going to say goodbye to Father before I go, be right back!" Kyojuro smiled. He walked confidently down the hallway where Shinjuro, His father's room door was in front of him. He knocked before waiting a few seconds and then walking in. Shinjuro was sitting out at the Engawa, a bottle of sake in his rough hands. Ever since his mother, Ruka, a loving mother who cared for her three boys, caught an untreatable illness and unfortunately passed away, leaving Shinjuro in a state of shock and rage, it seemed to keep his sadness at bay, had could drink them away.
That was until Kyojuro caught sight of the clock and immediately stood up. "it seems that (name) and I have to go unless we're gonna be late for the train!" he exclaimed playfully ruffling Senjuro's hair. He drank the rest of his water before setting it back on the table.
"wait! I'll walk you two to the gate!" and so he did. "Senjuro, lunch was lovely! I really hope sometime we get another chance to have some more time with you! You also need to tell me your recipe for that onigiri." You said, Senjuro blushing at the compliment and nodding confidently.
Kyojuro held your hand as you bid your goodbyes before Kyojuro and you ran to the station where the train sat. You merely made it in time as you and Kyojuro stepped onto the train.
You sat down and Kyojuro sat across from you, he sat with his arms crossed with a big smile on his face. You started to talk but was interrupted by a waiter on the train, asking if you wanted something to eat, to which you nodded and so did Kyojuro. It will be a long journey after all.
"Umai!" munch.. "Umai!" munch.. "is that really the flame hashira?" "he looks like an idiot." "inosuke! That's rude! And zenitsu, it is. He looks like an admirable person."
"u-um... Mr. Rengoku?" "Umai!" "Kyojuro! Someone is calling you! It's the boy with the demon sister!" You said, lightly hitting him on the arm to get his attention. He turned his head towards the three boys. "Ah yes! Kamado, my boy! Come sit here!" He grinned patting the seat next to him and Tanjiro nodded and sat next to him.
"Kyaaaaa!! A pretty lady is in the same place as meeee!! Can you please marry meee?! I don't wanna die alone!!!!" Zenitsu cried, clinging his arms around your waist. You looked away in awkwardness. You felt Kyojuros burning gaze on you, so you adverted your eyes to him, his smile dropped a bit, eyes looking stern.
Could he be.. Jealous? The thought made you laugh, and Kyojuro's stern face was replaced with happiness and love when he saw you laugh.
"That's my fiancé, Yellow boy." "WHAAATTT?! I... YOU... HOW?! EEEEHHHH!? NEZUKO-CHAN!! SAVE ME!!" "Zenitsu, stop it."
"Come and fight me!!" "Settle down now, pig boy." "I AM NOT A PIG!! I AM KING INOSUKE!" "You are so embarrassing Inosuke!" "Shut up monitsu!" You sighed and shoved the two boys onto a seat on their own, tired of their behaviour already.
Kyojuro and Tanjiro we're talking amongst themselves, something about breathing styles. While you looked over at the boys to check on them, but regretted it when you saw Inosuke trying to stick his head out the window and Zenitsu trying to hold him back, calling Tanjiro for help.
The ticket man came around looking for people's tickets. As he came to you, the once happy space had now become a dark, gloomy era. You noticed his appearance, he had very dark eye bags under his eyes, and his eyes were blank. You reluctantly gave him your ticket, your suspicion raising, and it seemed like Kyojuro had the same. You stared at the lively smile he gave the man, just admiring his beauty. It's funny how the other hashiras call you both 'love birds.'
The click of the ticket removed you from your trance. You shook your head, trying to get rid of the thoughts that blasted through your head.
A few minutes passed and you felt sudden drowsiness, your eyes struggling to stay open. You thought it was weird, but didn't think much of it since you hadn't got much sleep in a while.
You opened your eyes only to be big green eyes starting back at you. Feeling a little frightened, you let out a squeal, before the person jumped up, but then you noticed it was the Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji, also known as your best friend.
"(Name)! (Name)! Get up! Get up!" She squealed, shaking you by the shoulders a bit too hard. "Hey, hey, hey! What's wrong?! Is it a demon?!" You yelled, ready to get up and grab your sword to fight in your pajamas if you must. "It's your- a demon?! Are you silly?! Today is your big day!" "Mitsuri-Chan, I'll handle it." you heard a voice say, and Mitsuri stopped shaking you.
Shinobu Kocho, The insect Hashira, also known as your best friend, along with Mitsuri stepped out and helped you out of bed.
"What's happening?" You asked confusion on your face. "You're getting married to Rengoku-San, remember?" She asked, her thin eyebrows furrowing. You widened your eyes and started pacing around the room.
"but I need a dress! What ifidontlookgoodandhesaysnoatthevowsandrunsaway-" "(name)!"
After many almost mental breakdowns, you finally got your dress on, Suma and Makio & Hinatsuru Uzui worked on your makeup, and damn, they made you feel like a goddess. Mitsuri, Shinobu, Aoi, and the three butterfly girls worked on your dress compartment as your dress processes some errors while they fixed them. Nezuko popped up with small flowers in her hands, putting them into your hair beautifully. Kanao then came, placing a small butterfly clip in your hair. You then cooed, almost crying because of their cuteness.
But to your surprise, a familiar head peaked in, almost making you sob and ruin your makeup.
Your family passed a few years back, and you've just finally faced reality to accept it, but all the years you've survived without them, but as soon as you saw her face, you felt the need to be with them again.
"Oh my sweet baby... (Name)... You look gorgeous.. Oh my dear, don't cry!" Your mother cooed, smiling at your face.
The ladies then finished your look, which you squealed at and hugged them all. Mitsuri then had to hold back her tears, she felt so happy for you that she started crying, and soon enough, your mother joined in, claiming that you "grew up so fast."
𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞...
"Oh come on Kyojuro! Don't be so nervous, it'll be alright man." Tengen laughed at his best buddy's face. Kyojuro kept worrying about his hair, and constantly asking him if he looked alright, but tengen only laughed and nodded in response.
"Hisssss..." "Yeah, I wonder how Mitsuri looks as well. I'm she she'll be as stunning as always." "Are you talking to a... Snake? What the fuck." "Shut the fuck up Shinazugawa. Mind your own business." "Obanai, Shinazugawa. Do not fight on this special, holy day." "I agree. It's a special day for Rengoku-san and L/n-san." "Shut up Tomioka. Nobody asked for your opinion." "I simply said that do not fight on Rengoku and L/n's special day. There is no reason to get upset." "What the fuck? I'm out of here." Sanemi said, storming out of the room.
"Why am I here again..." "To celebrate Rengoku-san and L/n's wedding, Tokito." "What's a wedding... And who's Rengoku and L/n..." "Nevermind, Tokito. We must go now." "Go where?" "Just follow me, boy."
The flower girls were up, Which was the three butterfly triplets. Sumi, Naho, Kiyo throwing petals on the floor. Some people cooed at their cuteness.
It was time for you to walk up to your soon to be husband, holding your fathers arm as he smiled at you gently, he was a little emotional about today since his daughter was getting married, which made you giggle. It felt like a dream come true to you, honestly.
But then you finally looked up at him. He looked so, so, so good. His hair was in his usual, small ponytail, hair still on his shoulders, Swiftly blowing in the wind, You blushed. He looked at you, in shock, a warm blush complimenting his lovely face. He quickly came back to his loving smile, his hands getting a bit clammy, going over his vows in his head while trying to look at his soon to be wife. You noticed that his other two family members, Shinjuro, His father, and Senjuro, his sweet little brother looking at you with a gentle smile on his face, his eyes almost telling you run up there and say 'I do!'
Then you saw all the male hashiras by his side, Tengen, Gyomei, Obanai, Giyuu, Sanemi & Muichiro. Most of them looked like they didn't wanna be here, except Gyomei and Tengen, while sanemi looked at the bush at the side, giyuu staring into space, obanai staring at Mitsuri, wishing that it was him and her and Muichiro looking at the clouds, slowly floating past in the bright blue sky.
You finally made it to where Kyojuro was standing, your sandals making a small 'click' due to the added platform. (im trying to say heels but in a sadal way?)
While the priest was talking, you tried to quickly glance at the wedding setting but your (e/c) eyes caught something.
Your wedding setting plan was a lovely garden, greenery everywhere, ponds and lakes everywhere, flowers growing in the perfect spots.
But the thing that caught your eye was.. Someone was in the pond? It almost looked like you, but you ignored it, looking at your husband, thinking it was just your imagination.
You both then said your vows, making you giggle as yiu recall the times you spent together, leading up to this moment. He then said his vows, a smile on his face.
The priest then turned over to you.
"Miss L/n, do accept Mr Rengoku Kyojuro as your loving husband?" He asked you.
"I do."
"Mr Rengoku Kyojuro, do you accept Miss L/n as your loving wife?"
"I do!" Kyojyro said enthusiastically, making everyone laugh.
"Any objections?"
....... ....... .......
"You may kiss the bride." after he said that, kuojuro pounced. He grabbed your waist and leaned into your lips, you then wrapping your arms around his neck, screams and yells booming through the air. Screams mixed with Mitsuri and the girls and your parents and yells mixed with Tengen, Shinjuro and Senjuro.
After the kiss, he started twirling you around, laughing loudly, making you squeal in delight and shock.
"Why hello there, Mrs. Rengoku!" Kyojuro said and kissed your cheek. You booped his nose. "Hello there, Mr. Rengoku~!" "Okay, Okay we get it lovebirds."
Tengen then grabbed Kyojuro. "Mind if I take him for a bit?" "Nope! I don't mind!" You said, smiling and Tengen dragged him over somewhere.
You then saw fish jumping over at the pond, so you decided to take a closer look. You then kneeled on the grass, but made sure the dirt didn't stain your dress. You then looked at your reflection.
"This doesn't feel real.." you mumbled. You could of sworn that you were on the Mugen Train, sitting with Kyojuro and the Kamaboko Squad. As you thought you didn't realise a face starting back at you, but it wasnt just any face, it was your face. You jumped, today was feeling odd, and now this was feeling very strange.
You then realised that... You.. In the water, was trying to say something, so you looked closer to hear what you were saying, only for your arms to get your actual arms and pull you into the pond. Feeling panicked, you tried to swim back up but you held a deathly grip.
"WAKE UP! WAKE UP!" You screamed, bubbles forming around your mouth. You then disappeared somewhere into the water, making you feel even more uncomfortable.
'Wake up? Wake up? From what? From what?!'
"THE BRIDE HAS FALLEN INRO THE POND! SOOMEONE HELP HER! SHE ISNT COMING UP!" Someone screamed, and you felt a rush of hands trying to grip your arm, but no luck. You weren't thinking straight. 'Wake up? I'm so confused! Is this... All a dream?..'
"I'LL GET HER!!" Someone else yelled before you heard a big splash of water and someone pulling you up. As your head finally got above the water, you suddenly needed air, so you took big gasps of it.
The person who you recognized is your now husband, his eyebrows furrowed. "Are you okay my dear? You need to be more careful." Kyojuro mumbled and you nodded and hugged him. You were so confused, one moment you were on the Mugen Train and now your at your future wedding with Kyojuro? This has to be a dream.
You then excused yourself to the bathroom, looking yourself in the mirror, trying to process what just happened.
You then saw your blade in the corner, in your eyes, it's almost glimmering, as if it's the only thing you see in the room. You squinted your eyes and walked over to it. You picked it up, unsheathing the sword from the case.
Suddenly, multiple voices in your head started swarming in your head. Whispering and muttering "𝐂𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐊." "𝐒𝐖𝐈𝐏𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃 𝐀𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐒 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐊."
Panting, you hands shakily brought the sword up to your neck, closing your eyes shut.
'maybe, maybe, it will get me out of this dream, as much as I wanna stay, I have to get back to reality, especially since I'm vulnerable asleep.' she thought, you clenched the sword and screamed, swiping the sword against your neck.
Your body collapsed on the bathroom floor, unknown to you, someone heard your scream, and came rushing in, collapsing himself at the sight of your dead body on the floor.
But in reality however, you snapped your eyes open, and the first thing you see is some purple things on the train ceiling, making you jump and get into action, quickly slicing it. But to your surprise however, it was consuming the whole train, whatever it was. You noticed Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Nezuko and Kyojuro disappear, making you worry a bit.
You ran, slicing the purple guts that went into your way within a second. Slamming the door open with a bang, you saw your firey fiancee using his Flame breathing on a demon, making you sigh in relief. As you looked around, you noticed that everyone was asleep, so you suspected that the demon's ability was to make someone's dream come true and never wake again to the real world.
Kyojuro seemed to notice you after he finished the demon. "(Name)! It seems you have awoken, to my relief. Are you alright?!" He yelled and sped walked over to you, cradling your face in his hand, while his other on held his sword. You smiled and held the hand touching your face.
"I'm fine Kyojuro. Are you alright though?" You asked softly, wiping the small droplets from the demons blood on his face.
Kyojuro did his signature smile and kissed your cheek. "Of course I am! Now, let us defeat this demon and go home! I am looking forward to stay home with you after this is over! Do you wanna go to the festival after this actually? I promise it this time!" He said, the last time he said that he had to go to a mission when you two just got ready, making you sulk. You giggled and shook your head.
"I'll take care of the two cars while you take the other two!" Kyojuro yelled and you nodded, you two separating once again.
Soon enough, Tanjiro and the others defeated the main body of the demon, but after they did, the train tipped over, but none of the 200 passengers were killed. When the train tipped over, people's heavy luggage and belongings toppled over you, making you bang your head aggressively on the wall, making you fall unconscious with a bleeding head and some small bruises on your body.
When you opened your eyes again, your vision was hazy, seeing the moon shining down on you. Your ears started ringing and you closed your eyes as a headache started forming. When you opened your eyes again, you saw a pair of firey eyes starting back into yours, making you yelp, but realising it's Kyojuro's.
"Are you alright honey?" He asked softly getting on his knees and bandaging your head with the bandages from his haori.
You managed to mumble a 'yes'. But his warming presence didn't last long.
The mist and smoke from the train was still in the air, making it foggy, but you could somehow manage to spot a figure, aiming towards... Tanjiro?!
You tried getting up and aiming for the demon that was heading to tanjiro, but it seems Kyojuro had gotten to him first. The demon quickly recoiled, licking the blood of his arm as it regenerated in a blink of an eye. You wondered, why it regenerate so quickly? Not even a lower rank demon can regenerate that fast.
"Nice blade you got there." The demon spoke, opening his honey-coloured eyes. He had long eyelashes. You were shaken to the bone as you read his eyes. The writing in his eyes read...
Ʉ₱₱ɆⱤ₥ØØ₦ ₮ⱧⱤɆɆ
U..uppermoon three? Kyojuro was incredibly strong and fast, but this is uppermoon three, no human has survived him, ever. But you prayed that he would be okay.
"My name is Akaza, uppermoon three, what's yours?" "Rengoku Kyojuro, the Flame Hashira."
"Oh! A hashira? This is getting exciting! Not to mention, A flame hashira, I think I've killed a few!" Right after he said that, you could tell Kyojuro tensed, grabbing his sword in front of him more tighter, much after he did before.
Kyojuro saw Akaza's eyes flicker to you, so we started moving in front of you, blocking Akaza's vision of you.
"I assume she's a hashira aswell. You two sure look like the perfect couple, are you perhaps married?" Akaza asked, and Kyojuro tensed even more. If he didn't answer, it's only longer to get this over with.
"Yes, soon to be." "ah, I see." Kyojuro's eyes narrowed at him, gritting his teeth slightly. Akaza put his hands up in defence.
"don't you worry there bud. I don't eat or hurt women." That assured him, a bit, but that doesnt mean he'll go off guard when he comes close to you.
"Why don't you become a demon, Kyojuro? You look incredibly strong. Instead of having this one battle once, we could have it multiple times! That is, if you become a demon of course. You could train and live for a hundred years! No, two hundred years! You're strong enough to be an uppermoon, I can tell clearly. Now come on! Be a demon Kyojuro! Why live in this human form when you can be a demon and live forever?!"
"Because dying is life. It happens to all of us, you must treasure life before it ends. And that's what i'm gonna do. I have friends, and I've got family waiting for me home, and I have my soon-to-be wife fighting along side me, battling evil creatures like you. So, I decline your offer. If I die tonight, I will be remembered as a human who refuses to be a demon!" He yelled, getting passionate and angryier by the minute, making Akaza smirk and get in position.
Akaza dug his feet onto the ground, making it crack and break under him as he muttered his blood demon art.
"Technique development... Destructive Death: Compass Needle!" Akaza yelled, a snowflake shape under him, running straight and fast at Kyojuro.
And so, the battle began. You could hear the clashes of Kyojuros sword and the grunts coming out of his mouth. You narrowed your eyes, starting to get up, and it seems Tanjiro had the same idea.
"Kamado, (Name)! Don't get up! Your wounds will reopen and there is a high- chance of you bleeding to death! Let me handle this!" He yelled, focused on the battle before him. You looked at your surroundings. Zenitsu was lying there, unconscious, and you hoped it would stay that way, he was a very emotional boy and if he found out the situation he was in, he would start panicking and screaming, making your headache worse.
Tanjiro looked lost, he didn't know what to do. He didn't know if he should listen to Kyojuro, or if he should help him. I put my hand on his shoulder, giving him the best reassuringly smile you could pull, giving him a look 'leave him be.'
You heard Inosuke in the distance, yelling something about the ticket man under the train. Apparently, the man had stabbed Tanjiro with some sort of weapon. You knew he looked suspicious. Tanjiro replied, telling him to help him, Inosuke grunting and grumbling in response.
Your (e/c) eyes followed the fight again, trying to make out the figures. You head loud clashing of swords, making your eyebrows furrow as worry had made onto your features. You clenched your hand around the hilt of your sword, if Kyojuro ever turned his head and gave you the go ahead to join in, but he never did.
The sounds stopped and you heard Kyojuro panting. Your eyes managed to look to his face, blood was dripping down his mouth, blood dripping onto his forehead, and he seems to have crushed his eye badly. You quietly gasped at his wounds, feeling the urge to run at him and take him away, before he got killed. But you knew better. Kyojuro never, never, ever, ran away from his missions, nor the scariest demon, he always fight back, never backing down. He would never run away.
"Kyojuro! Become a demon! You are in the verge of dying, if you become a demon now, you will be healed within a blink of an eye! Don't go dying now! That's pathetic!" Akaza yelled, veins popping out of his face.
"I... I refuse... I refuse to become a demon! I would never... Become murderer, killer, ugly creature like you!" Kyojuro yelled, blood dripping down on the right side of his face now. The more blood he shed, the more you worried. The attacks never stopped, the two never stopped for a moment.
"let's fight more. Don't die on me, Kyojuro!" Akaza yelled, now frowning as Kyojuro's blood dripped onto the ground.
The two were a few meters apart, and Kyojuro was panting. He then pushed his foot back, the dust lifting from the movement.
It was as if his body lit into flames, his haori was blowing in the wind. The flames stopped, and Kyojuro swung his sword over his shoulder, his two hands on his sword.
"Set your heart ablaze, go beyond your limits."
"I will fulfil my duty! I will not let anyone here die!" He yelled, his eyes bursting with flames, determined to finish him. His face was covered in blood, yet, he still wore his signature smile. You only wished for him to be okay.
"Flame breathing... Esoteric Art!" He yelled, his thick eyebrows furrowing in anger and focusing on Akaza, his smiling dropping for once. Kyojuro's sword lit up in flames. Akaza seemed shaken and had a look of disbelief on his face.
"what a tremendous fighting spirit!" Akaza gasped, giving his evil and mischievous smile.
"You have to become a demon after all, Kyojuro!" Akaza grit his teeth in excitement.
Tanjiro looked at you worriedly, clutching your hand to bring you some sort of comfort.
"𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆.. 𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐇 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐌... 𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐎𝐊𝐔!" Kyojuro cried out, grasping his sword tighter then he did. The ground shook underneath him, and he lunged at Akaza, who was wearing a smile. He preformed his blood demon art, and the two collided.
You could hear yelling, blood gushing, Akaza's laughing, the both of them yelling. You covered your mouth, as you hoped for the best. A cloud of dust formed everywhere, and ground stilled.
The dust was fading away, slowly uncovering the scene before you.
The sight was the sight you never wanted to see in your life. All you wanted was to go home, hand-in-hand with your lover, not scratch on him and prepare your upcoming wedding. Was that too much to ask for?
Akaza's arm... Was impaled in Kyojuro's stomach. Blood dripped from Kyojuro's mouth, his white teeth stained with his own red blood.
You gasped, your whole body shook, your brain went blank, and big salty tears were already sliding down your face. Your voice was stuck in your throat, only sounds of disbelief and sadness groans coming out. Tanjiro grasped at the dirt beneath him, struggling to get up. Inosuke stood there, baffled at the scene before him, he didn't know what to do.
"Say that you'll become a demon Kyojuro!" Akaza shouted, his arm and the gashes had already regenerated while Kyojuro's was permanent.
Before Akaza spoke another word, Kyojuro gritted his teeth and aimed his sword at Akaza's neck. The demon groaned out in pain as Kyojuro dig his sword deeper into his neck, yelling in fury.
Akaza got his other hand and aimed it at Kyojuro's face, but luckily, Kyojuro stopped it with his other hand.
'he stopped it?!' Akaza thought, his eyes bulging in anger.
The veins popping out of their heads. They both screamed out in pain, and anger. Kyojuro digging his sword deeper while Akaza still had his hand in his stomach and trying to fight off Kyojuro.
'Damn! It'll be daybreak soon! I have to kill him and get out of here! I have to get out of here!'
"Out of my way!!" Akaza shouted, ripping his hand out of Kyojuro's grip and tearing out his hand from his stomach, leaving his sword stuck in his neck and hands ripped off him.
'I have to find refuge from the sunlight!' Akaza thought, fleeing from the sun and into the dark forest. Tanjiro was quick to get up and follow him.
"Tanjiro!"
He unshealted his sword, using his breathing to throw it at the pink-haired demon deep in the back.
"don't run away, you coward! Don't run away!"
'i'm not running from you, im running from the sun!'
"don't run away, you bastard! You bastard! You coward!" Tanjiro cried out, tears running down his cheeks. Your vision was blurry and you were unable to move. But you eventually wanted, no, needed to go to Kyojuro.
"Kyojuro!!" You screamed, wobbling over to him. You felt heartbroken that you lost most of your strength, almost like a half of you is fading.
Tanjiro limped over to you two as tears came down his face.
"Kamado, my young boy. I have high hopes for you and and your sister, I wish you two well. I hope that your sister turns human soon. The breathings we were talking about... I believe my father has a book of the type of breathing you seek. Go to the Rengoku residence, I'm sure my brother can guide you. Remember, set your heart ablaze, go beyond your limits. I believe in you." He managed to murmur out, turning his gaze to you.
"Ah, (name)... I'm.. I'm sorry. I wasn't able to make you happy, I wasn't able to make you my wife in time. I love you so, so much. After I die, I want you to never forget me, but... Find love... In another person.. I don't want you crying over my death..." "Kyojuro..." "(Name), Make sure father is okay, don't let him drink too much, and comfort Senjuro. He's too young to experience this.. I love you. I must see my mother soon...I... I think I see her... I don't think it's possible for me to live, again, i'm... Sorry. It was not... Meant to be this way." He said, whispering the last part as his life was being taken, slowly in front of your eyes.
He began to look behind you and Tanjiro, his eyes widening, and his mouth curling onto a smile. He must of seen his mother.
"Kyojuro... I love you so much, don't ever forget that, 𝐦𝐲... 𝐒𝐨𝐨𝐧-𝐭𝐨-𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝."
"I love you too, 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐨𝐨𝐧-𝐭𝐨-𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐞."
✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦
"Good morning Kyojuro... It's a lovely morning, isn't it? I'm sure you would love it as much as I love it. We miss you, honey. I miss you. Maybe in another life, we could have our happy ending. I guess fate just didn't wish for us to be together." You murmured, placing flowers on the grave.
"Shinjuro-san has changed after what had happened, he has stopped his drinking habits and has opened up to me a little. Senjuro-san is also starting to heal, but very slowly. He misses you very much, my love. Tanjiro-kun and the others are working very hard. They are currently staying at the butterfly estate."
"I don't know how much I can take without being with you. I haven't taken my ring off at all. Everything has reminded me of you, Kyojuro." You weeped, covering your face.
"𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐌𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞. 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞, 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐞. 𝐈 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡, 𝐦𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐞."
"I love you too, My husband."

"Kyojuro! I..i'll help you!" You yelled and Kyojuro widened his eyes. You were one of the fastest hashira. Trying your best not to hurt him, you carried Kyojuro in your arms while you yelled at Tanjiro on what to do.
"Tanjiro-Kun! I'll get Kyojuro to help! Make sure you and everyone else is safe and check for any injuries!" You yelled, focusing on getting Kyojuro the medical help. You knew the kakushi's would come eventually, but by that time, it would be too late. So your legs sped faster then ever.
You went to the nearest hospital in the town. People stared at you weirdly. First, the man is in the woman's arms and second, Kyojuro is on the verge of death, and third, you both have swords. But did you care? Of course not, you only cared about Kyojuro.
Luckily, the best doctors there were available and got to work immediately. You sent your crow to the group of boys to see what's happening on their end. Kakushi's probably landed by now.
You sat in the waiting room, waiting for the white door to be opened. You didn't even have to appetite to eat and your leg constantly jumped on nervousment. Due to the nevousment and the lack of sleep you've gotten, you eventually fell asleep in the uncomfortable chair.
"Miss? Ma'am? Can you wake up please?" The nurse spoke, shaking you softly. You blinked your eyes opened repeatedly, still half asleep. You wanted to go to sleep, closing your eyes again in tiredness.
Realizing your surroundings and why your here, you shot up.
"K-Kyojuro! Is he okay? Is my husband okay?!" "Oh uhm, yes Mrs, He is okay. His eye got crushed, so we wrapped bandages around the eye. His ribs and fingers are broken. And obviously, the hole in his abdomen was deep. It might take a long time to fully heal. You are lucky you got here fast enough, or else we couldn't have saved him."
"M-May I see him?" "You may. He is currently resting and I may inform you not to wake him up. He had struggled not sleeping next to 'Y/n' he said." your eyes softened at what she said. Oh, how you adore him.
You sped to his door, not bothering knocking in case he'd wake up. The state he was in, was bad. He was covered in bandages all over, especially his abdomen.
You couldn't help yourself as tears pushed their way through your eyes, now rolling your face. Limping over to his form, you crawled in beside him, careful not to touch any of his injuries. He looked so peaceful sleeping. He was like an angel sent from heaven just for you. He was your sun, he was your life. He was everything to you, for you. He was like the other half of you, if he ever passed, you would feel empty, broken.
You touched his face, looking at his closed eye. You kissed every part of his face, a little happy that he still has a chance with him.
His body shuffled a bit, making you jump and a bit worried since you weren't supposed to wake him up.
His only eye opened, adjusting to the room. He felt another presence beside him, so he looked next to him.
𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐎𝐊𝐔 𝐊𝐘𝐎𝐉𝐔𝐑𝐎'𝐒 𝐏𝐎𝐕:
What... What am I doing here? What happened... All I remember is... Fighting Akaza, the pain of my injuries, the pain in my abdomen... Am I... Dead? Will I get to meet mother again? No... I left Father... Senjuro... Y/n... I never got to forfil my promise of marrying you and making you happy.
No, I am not dead, I still feel the pain... Over my body, my fingers, my abdomen... Then who is next to me?
I look over to my left, only to see my lover lying next to me.
"Y-Y-" "Shh my love. Don't waste your breath. Please rest. I wasn't supposed to wake you up. I love you, my love."
Did she... Save me? I... Survived..? All thanks to her... My lover... If I haven't loved her enough, I love her more than ever.
I nodded and she wrapped her arms around my neck since my body was full of cuts, bruises and broken bones. I was comfortable in her arms, I always have been, forever.
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
After a few months, I healed, except the hole in my abdomen hasn't healed fully. I go to Kocho's butterfly manor for checkup's now.
My wedding with Y/n is tomorrow. I have my suit ready. I am very happy to get married to my lover and I'm glad that I could be her husband. We don't want anything to happen to each other. I have retired from being the Flame Hashira, and she continues to be The Wisteria Hashira.
My father and Senjuro were happy to see me, but a sad that I was on the verge of death. Shinjuro has treated me, Senjuro and Y/n better and has stopped his drinking habits, thankfully.
I'm glad Father has gone back to his old ways, back to caring about us again. I understand that he was emotionally and physically upset about my Mother's death, but drinking alcohol is not gonna help in any way.
Tomorrow came and I was nervous. I mean, what if I mess up? What if she has her doubts? What if she says no? What if- no. I shouldn't think like this. She's gonna say yes and I know it.
The male hashiras and friends, Tengen, Shinazugawa, Obanai, Gyomei, Muichiro, Giyuu, Kamado, yellow boy and Boar boy.
"Oi dude! I need to fix your hair!"
"My hair? I-Is something wrong with it?!"
"Yeah. I need to put flashiness into it!" tengen said, pointing to something.
"...Tengen. We are not putting glitter in my hair. I'm getting married, not being a gliterbomb."
"Psh, whatever. Kyojuro, there's a stain on your ass! Did you shit yourself?!"
"WHAT?! I- HOW?-"
"HAHAHA! YOU SHOULD IF SEEN YOUR FACE!"
"TENGEN! YOU BETTER NOT BE MESSING AROUND WITH KYOJURO!"
".... I'm not Makio! I swear!"
Makio quickly opened the door, grabbing Tengen by the ear, and dragging him out. Hinatsuru and Suma only giggled before heading to (Name)'s room.
I only shook my head. Tengen was not helping. Tanjiro and the two boys then spoke up.
"Rengoku-san, You look amazing! I hope the wedding goes as plan. Y/n-san is very lucky to have you. You two look like the very best couple!" Tanjiro said, giving a closed eye smile. I smile back with enthusiasm, even though the nevousment is still bubbling in my stomach.
"Thank you, Kamado!"
"WHERE'S THE FOOD?! ARE THERE ANY DEMONS?!"
"INOSUKE! PUT YOUR SWORDS AWAY! AND PUT ON YOUR GODDAMN SHIRT!"
"Erm, ew, no. I am not putting on the suffocating killer of a thing."
"TANJIRO!!"
Tanjiro's sweat dropped, while I smiled at the scene. The boar boy sure knew how to make noise. Tanjiro then said a goodbye, shoving the two out the sorry, yelling a 'sorry' as I didn't hear him mutter a sorry the first time.
Senjuro then came in, smiling up at me. He was growing! His head was about to my shoulders! I then ruffled his head.
"Brother! You look good. I'm sure Y/N thinks so when she sees you too!"
"Haha! Thank you Senjuro! I am quite nervous! I hope everything goes as planned." I say, giving a smile down at him. My father then came in, putting his hands on my shoulders.
"I'm proud of you son. Remember, I want some grandchildren as well." He winked and my face heated up at what he said.
"I will ask Y/N on how she thinks on that idea! We will only go at her pace!" My father only laughed, tugging Senjuro softly.
"Well, Me and Senjuro are gonna get into place. After all, I am walking Y/n down the aisle. We don't wanna be late, do we Senjuro?"
"Nope!"
"Well then, I'll see you later, Kyojuro." "Okay!"
Looking at myself in the mirror, I wonder how she's feeling right now...
𝐘/𝐍 𝐋/𝐍'𝐒 𝐏𝐎𝐕:
I am so nervous! Mitsuri and Shinobu did a wonderful job, as well as the butterfly ladies and the Uzui ladies. Only this time, my family wasn't here. But I've learned to accept that. I'm sure they're cheering me on, even if it's from above. Shinjuro-san is walking me down the aisle. He was like a father figure to me, apart from Master of course. His illness has gotten worse, so he unfortunately couldn't come. He sends his blessings and his apologies.
"Thank you guys. I love you guys so much. Thank you for doing this all for me!"
"WAHHH! Y/N-CHAN!! I LOVE YOU TOO!"
"Now now now, Mitsuri-chan, we wouldn't wanna ruin your makeup now would we?~"
"N-no..."
"well then. I'm gonna get back to Tomioka-san while Mitsuri-chan goes with Iguro-san. It's almost time for you to walk down, Y/n-chan. We'll be right here for you. I'll be right next to you, okay?"
"O-Okay!" You stuttered, trying to be confident. My palms were sweating.
It was time to walk down.
The scenery was beautiful, flowers decorated the place. While you and Kyojuro were friends, you two discovered a lovely waterfall on a mission, it was actually the same waterfall place where he confessed his love. Kyojuro and you thought it would be amazing to have the wedding here.
(ᴀ ʀᴏᴜɢʜ ᴘɪᴄ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴇᴅᴅɪɴɢ)
Flowers were everywhere, which you loved. When you were walking, you noticed all of your friends and the people you call family, noticed you walking, standing up. You saw Shinjuro, hooking your arms with his.
He then leaned in close in your ear, whispering that you look beautiful, which you replied with a thank you.
Looking up at Kyojuro's face, you noticed his pink tainted cheeks, and the loving smile he always gave you.
Tengen looked at Kyojuro's face with a smug smile, sanemi looking bored, thinking he could slay over 100 demons in this moment. Giyuu had a small smile, aswell as Gyomei. Muichiro snatched one of the flowers, staring at the flower, no thought behind his eyes.
Tanjiro smiled at the two of you, Inosuke was busing himself with food, the crumbs sticking onto his face. Zenitsu having love hearts in his eyes while staring at Nezuko, aswell as obanai. He gave you a few looks, but moving his different coloured eyes to Mitsuri lovingly. As if it was their wedding.
Mitsuri wore a big smile and blushed, Shinobu kept her small smile, as well as Kanao and Aoi. Nezuko smiled behind her muzzle. Suma was covering her mouth, trying to prevent her from squealing, Makio had her hands on her hips, smiling while Hinatsuru kept her hand on her wrist, smiling gently.
Making it up to where Kyojuro stood and letting go of Shinjuro's arm, giving a shy smile across to Kyojuro. While the preist was speaking, You looked at your surroundings, taking in the scenery. This time, you didn't see anything, making you sigh and relief. A soft smile replacing your shy one.
You stared at his fiery orbs, while the priest spoke.
"Miss L/n, would you take Rengoku Kyojuro as your lawfully wedded husband?"
"I do."
"Rengoku Kyojuro, do you take Y/n L/n as your lawfully wedded wife?"
"I do!" Kyojuro yelled, making everyone laugh. Just like your dream.
........
"you may kiss the bride."
Kyojuro wasted no time, quickly grabbing your waist and kissing your lips. The crowd cheered in joy.
You were glad that this wasn't a dream. Being a Rengoku wasn't a dream, at last.
You and kyojuro lived happily ever after.

The old lady's statements opened many questions for Kyojuro. Even when he said goodbye to her, he brooded over her words, but came to no conclusion. He was confused and a little hurt. Didn't you two trust each other that day so you kept something that important from him? Why were you hiding it? He thought that you were both close friends. He couldn't answer the question and would ask you about it later when you were feeling better. First, he had to talk to his father. He needed to know what had happened back then.
He entered the room where his father spent the most of his time and didn’t see him lying on his futon for the first time in years. Usually, he was either drinking and laying sideways while reading in that book but now he sat on the engawa, and his eyes were staring into the distance. Respectful as Kyojuro was, he sat down on the tatami mat to keep a distance and just as he was about to open his mouth, Shinjuro interrupted him.
"Is your girlfriend okay?"
Kyojuro had not expected this question. She was not his girlfriend. In general, he hadn't expected his father to ask about anyone's wellbeing, but it looked like he was sober. "Yes, she's unconscious, but-"
"And her burns?"
Kyojuro's eyes widened at this statement, and it hit him like a slap. Even his father knew that crucial detail about you. His gaze dropped as he clenched his fists on his knees. "The old lady next door treated her. She said she will be fine and should wake up in the next hour or so. She also told me that Y/N has several old burns. Something you seem to know about, father."
Shinjuro turned his head sideways to give him a silent look, before he turned ahead again and sighed. "15 years ago, there was a fire demon who attacked a village. His eye bore the sign Lower Rank One. A powerful opponent who managed to spread a firestorm and turned countless people into demons. It was something I had never seen in my lifetime as a slayer."
Kyojuro swallowed and listened to his father's words. Lower Moon One? He remembered the fight he had against Lower Moon Two to become a Hashira and how he had terrorized a whole city with his bombs.
Shinjuro continued. "Your girlfriend looked at me the same way back then, full of fear and terror. Unfortunately, she witnessed how I beheaded her parents while protecting her. They had been turned into demons who wanted to eat their own daughter. I was able to decapitate the Lower Moon One… but at what cost? There was no one left to save. He had killed everyone without exception or turned them into demons which forced me to kill them all. Only she survived, but she ran away from me like I was the monster… I found her buried under a heap of rubble and wounded with the worst burns I have ever seen on a human being. Her chances of survival were slim and yet I wanted to save at least one person in this tragedy. The scale of the catastrophe was great, the village burned beyond recognition of its existence. Just as she bore her scars from it, I too have one from this fiery hell."
Shinjuro turned his foot around so Kyojuro could see the burned soles. "The demon slayer uniform protected me, the tabi socks didn't and yet I wished that I would be the one who's skin burned and not that of a little child. I can understand if she doesn't want to talk about it. It must have traumatized her badly. Even I-"
Suddenly a stifled sob sounded behind the shoji door. Father and son immediately turned their heads and knew that you had been listening to them the whole time behind the thin paper walls.
You had woken up alone and scared in a room with a headache. A penetrating herbal smell immediately hit your nose. An earlier memory from your childhood had come alive again and you knew immediately that you were covered with a burn ointment. A similar one that they used on you as a child. One quick look under your hakama and you saw the reddened skin. Your leg couldn't get any uglier than it already is, you thought dryly. You stepped out of the room and looked around for Kyojuro and couldn't see him until you heard his voice.
You stood there petrified and listened to the complete story of Shinjuro and your village. So that's why your memories were patchy without even knowing. There was simply no one left to tell you about it because they were all dead and your parents- Your breath caught and the memory of them coming at you with contorted faces came back with a bang. They- they tried to eat you! You hadn't even noticed how the tears flowed down your cheeks when a choked sob escaped you and you immediately covered your mouth with your hand. You looked in the direction of the shoji door in fear and hurried away with quick steps. You didn't want to be seen by them - not in this state - and entered the first room that you saw.
You dropped to the ground and cried uncontrollably. A heavy burden seemed to have been lifted from your shoulders and the unrestrained grief over the death of your family and friends overcame you. You finally knew the complete truth without knowing you were living a lie. You were not alone because you were avoided, but because you were brutally robbed of every person you ever knew.
With your head on your knees, you succumbed to your grief when you suddenly felt a presence next to you. You looked up with tear-stained eyes right into golden-red hues. Kyojuro's gaze contained no pity and yet they were filled with sadness and empathy for you. "Y/N..." He took your hand in his and pulled you up. "You are not alone in this. I won't allow that, so share your pain with me." If Kyojuro could, he would take all your pain to never see you cry again.
More tears gathered in your eyes until you couldn't see anything anymore. "K-Kyojuro-" With a sob, you threw yourself into his arms. He immediately wrapped his arms around you tightly, holding you in a fierce embrace.
You cried into the crook of his neck. It took a while for you to calm down, but that didn't matter, Kyojuro was here to hold you. His tight warm hug, it was like he gathered all the broken and burned pieces and made you whole again. Without realizing you nuzzled your face into the crook of his neck and took in his scent which sent you into a light buzz. His scent was warm like the ray of sunshine with an earthy undertone. It was so comforting for your senses that you wanted to nuzzle your nose more until you realized what you were about to do, but you didn't pull immediately away. Kyojuro’s grip on your yukata was so tight, his face buried also into your neck. It seemed like as he didn’t want let go of you, like he had to make sure you were still whole.
It took a while for the two of you to loosen your grip on each other. Very slowly you moved your heads apart but only to look deep into each other's eyes. Still in his embrace, you gazed into his beautiful golden red hues, which always radiated such a passionate optimism, but now seemed to have a gleam you had never seen in him before. A pleasant tingling spread through you, and you felt the looming tension between you. Without realizing your faces came closer until your lips met.
It was soft and chaste, fleeting - the touch of his lips hotter than you thought in the short moment you kissed. The butterflies in your stomach fluttered excitedly when you saw a hint of blush on his cheeks.
"I- apologize!"
"For what?"
"For touching you in such an inappropriate way!" His face was now completely red, and you could not help but start to giggle.
"I think it’s called a kiss, Kyojuro."
Mesmerized, he stared at your lips while you giggled. "Yeah, and I think I am going to do it again..."
He was about to bend down to give you another kiss when you quickly placed your finger on his lips. "W-Wait! What if someone just barges in here?" You looked around with a slight panic.
You heard his deep chuckle. "That is not going to happen, since this is my room."
“Oh,” was the only thing that left your lips. You looked around wide-eyed and indeed, it looked like it belonged to him. You just went into the next available room in such a hurry that you didn't even notice it, but on closer inspection it was obvious. It included the usual things a room needed. A futon to sleep, a chest of drawers and a picture of his family. But there was one thing- no two things that stood out. One was a small chest that seemed to hold writing stuff and the other was a hanging scroll where "protection" was written in a calligraphy. It was above his futon. The origin didn’t seem to be himself.
“Do you like it?”
You nodded and started to blush madly when you realized how intimate this situation actually was. You were here alone in Kyojuro’s room as the said man was still holding you.
He laughed his boisterous laugh, and you felt his laughter vibrate all over your body. Your blush was just so adorable that he couldn’t hold himself back and kissed your cheek. Another silent moment passed between you when you just looked into each other's eyes and then he suddenly shouted. “Y/N!” His face was red like a tomato. “I love you and I would be happy if you could become my girlfriend!”
His confession was bold and like a burning fire. He literally was the Flame Pillar as a slayer and in his private time. You smiled as you pulled him in for another kiss, holding his face in your hands. It was not a long and passionate kiss as this was the first one you ever shared in your life, that was followed by several others. Each of them was short and soft, feather light like the butterflies that were fluttering in your stomach. Each kiss had him sigh in delight, between each kiss you whispered how you loved him too, how much you wanted to be his, until you rested your head on his chest with closed eyes, and heard the strong and steady beat of his heart. You heard how excited he was that the feeling was mutual.
He noticed your exhaustion of the day and laid down on his futon, pulling you close in a comfortable and comforting embrace. You nuzzled your face into his chest, the symbol of protection over both of your heads, and you indeed felt protected for the first time in your life in the embrace of a Flame.

The Arrangement (Rengoku x reader) - Chapter 5
In his eagerness to get home and gather information about what his father is hiding Kyojuro forgoes sleep after his latest mission. This is proven to be a poor lapse of judgement, but thankfully your there to patch him up, and in the prosses a glimpse of your true self is unveiled to him, so maybe the blood and the scare he was sure to have was worth it?
Warnings: Mentions of Alcohol abuse, canon Typically violence, minor injuries (Kyojuro), awkward (y/n), and Kyojuro.
As Kyojuro stumbled out of his sandals and made his way down the corridor to the washroom, he couldn't help but wince as he barely caught his balance on one of the walls, narrowly avoiding landing on the floor. Kyojuro realized in that moment he had lost a lot more blood than he had originally anticipated. As he stared down at his hand that was putting pressure on his rib. He couldn't help the feeling of shame rise in him at the sight of his blood which stained his palm and dripping onto the floor below, 'You're a Hashira it's pathetic that you let a lower rank demon put you in such a state.' In his eagerness to figure out what his father was hiding he had an uncharacteristically poor lapse in judgment and decided to forgo sleep after his latest mission and head straight home in the hopes of speaking to you at first light. The lack of sleep and the tole the mission left on his body left him vulnerable to an opportunistic demon that caught him off guard as he ran through a neighboring village, though the demon was dispatched within seconds that didn't change the fact it was able to claw a deep gash across the Hashiras chest down to his ribs.
"Kyojuro? Is that - oh god. Uh, come on, we need to get you patched up." Your surprised voice pulled him from his self-depreciating thoughts before you firmly grabbed his arm and led him to the bathroom and went along wordlessly.
The young man watched from the toilet lid as your eyebrows were nit firmly in what could have been worry, while you searched through the first aid kit you'd dug out from under the sink. Your features softened a fraction once you found the bottle of antiseptic and some cotton swabs.
Not even glancing in his direction you gestured to the rag you had given him when you both first entered the bathroom, "Bite down on that, I'm sure this'll hurt like a bitch.",
Kyojuro didn't even have time to react to your foul language you turned, and a pained grunt left him and he quickly bit down on the rag, as you gently cleaned out his wound and wiped away excess blood with a damp rag as you went. You only stopped when Kyojuro softly laid a scared hand over your own, much smaller hands, not allowing you to clean the area over his heart. This action made you pause to look up at the slayer and give him a questioning look, noticing he removed the rag from his mouth. You were having to dig debris out of his wound so to say you were confused at this action would be an understatement.
"Thank you (Y/n), I'm truly sorry for waking you, that wasn't my intention." Kyojuro said with an apologetic smile, which you wouldn't help but return despite how every fiber of your being screamed at you to keep yourself guarded.
"It's alright. It's not a big deal." His grip loosened, allowing you to continue your work, "You're pretty banged up." You state, filling the silence, leaving an opening for him to continue if he wished.
"Yea..." he paused, seeming to debate if he should say more, "A demon got the jump on me." he said humiliation clear in his voice.
"That's alright, even the strongest make mistakes. Life is full of lessons. This could be one of them." Kyojuro too in your wise words as he watched you pull out a needle and thread from the box and got to patching him up. Your steady and confident moments, along with the persistence of your stitches impressed him, "You've done this before." He states after you were halfway done with his stiches.
"No, I just thought it would be a fun experience to stitch up a Hashira, in the middle of the night, you know? Just for the hell of it." If Kyojuro hadn't seen the small smirk that dawned your soft lips, he would have thought you'd been serious by the steady and monotoned sound of your voice,"I worked at a doctor's office as a cleaner when I was a young teen. The doctor was a kind woman and was eager to nurse my curiosity about medicine despite my lack of a formal education... She taught me a few things while she was in my village." you glanced up at him, gauging his pain levels before continuing, "Sadly, she and her assistant decided to move their practice after a while, so I had to start working full time at the tea house." You finished off as you masterfully tied the last stitch.
"That was nice of her. What else did you learn from her?" He asked, curiosity peaked as you began to dress his now closed wound.
"Oh, basic things like first aid, simple remedies and medicines, as well as how to take blood and give vaccinations. So, nothing too extreme, it was nothing that a normal person couldn't learn from a book." You shrug nonchalantly, focusing more on dressing his wound.
"Still, not enough people know first aid! So, I think it's wonderful you took time to learn it!" He says earnestly, with a smile that you swore could outshine the morning sun. You couldn't find it in yourself to turn away from the man before you. You froze when his gaze met your own,causing your hand to rest flat on his toned chest as you briefly stopped wrapping his wound. The look in his eyes wasn't one you had anticipated. He wasn't looking at you with distain or even disgust, as you would have originally thought, but with a slight curiosity and... what appears to be tenderness?  No, you must have been mistaken! Why would he give you of all people such a look? Your eyes followed Kyojuro's' hand as he reached out and grasped a stray lock of your hair that was in your face before pushing it behind your ear, "That's better." One of his scared knuckles grazed your jawline for a fraction of a second. Despite how feather light the motion was, it left your skin heating with a pleasant warmth in its wake, "It's getting late. You should get to bed; I truly appreciate your assistance. You got me sewed up quicker than I could have done on my own, and you did a better job as well. " He added after a moment of silence, breaking away from your gaze, and retracting his hand slowly, as you nodded.
"You should as well, I'm sure you're tired from your travels, and duties." You agreed before helping the taller man stand and shadowing him down the long corridor. As you watched him walk ahead of you, you noted he thankfully seemed to be fairings better than he had been when you first found him. Despite this, you chose to stay nearby just in case he became faint again. Thankful he hadn't and the short walk to your rooms was uneventful, and as you both begin to go to enter your separate room, you both stopped and turned to speak at the same time, cutting each other off. "Kyo-"
"(Y/-" You stared at each other for a few moments before you gave him a small but beautifully striking smile.
 "I hope you sleep well, Kyojuro." Your soft voice broke the tension in the air, as your orbs held his own.
"I- uh- you too (Y/n)! Th-thank you for everything." Kyojuro, in that moment as he stumbled over his words, as he bore into your kind eyes owlishly. In that moment Kyojuro felt more like a shy schoolboy than the revered and powerful Hashira he was meant to be. His flustered appeared only increased tenfold when you bowed your head slightly before entering your room, the pleats of your sleeping yukata flowing behind you as if the fabric was casketing water, and not linen, before you shut the sliding door. Leaving him standing in the hallway with only the shine of the moon to keep him company, feeling like a blushing fool.
Tumblr media
Kyojuro woke to the morning sun shining in his eyes as it spilled through the opened window of his room.
He blushed as his thoughts traveled to the events of last night, or hell was it really the early hours of that morning? He didn't know if it was the blood loss or your bewitching beauty, that allowed him to act so impulsively. Then as he thought about it more, he supposed it didn't matter, what was done was done... More importantly, you hadn't seemed at all bothered by his actions, or at least it didn't seem that way. You were quite a hard person to read if he was honest, or maybe he wasn't all that good with women? He had never really actually courted one before or been around one for extended periods of time other than his friend Mitsuri. Did that count though, they spent most of their time together training and eating?
Pushing off his thoughts not wanting to confuse himself further on the matter of the matter, he began to get ready for the day, choosing to dawn a vibrant red yukata with a dark carco grey Obi. He then put on a matching pair of grey tabi socks before exiting his room.
As he walked down the corridor leading to the main room, the aromic smell of tea filled his senses. You and Senjuro must have been awake, preparing breakfast. He wondered if that been the routine in the days he'd been absent?
He tried to stifle his laughter as he entered the kitchen and saw Senjuro standing closely by your side almost as if he were your shadow, his eyebrows creased in firm consecration, as he watched you expertly grill salmon.
"Ah, Anuie! You're back from your mission! I'm assuming you arrived last night?" Senjuro's attention snapped to the doorway the moment he heard his older brother's distinctive laughter, with a surprised smile.
"I am, I arrived late last night. The mission was thankfully successful!" He walked closer to the two of you and gave you both his signature smile before offering his assistance while he looked over the ingredients you had out.
You looked up in thought, thinking about what task to assign him, missing how his little brother looked at him as if he had multiple heads. What was Kyojuro thinking?
"Sure, would you mind cleaning and starting the rice? Thank you." You accepted before pointing to the bag of rice that was on the center island and going back to work on the salmon.
"What are you doing? You can't cook!" Senjuro whispers to his elder brother as they both made their way to the rice, kyojuro with a pot in hand.
"I'm a Hashira. I can surlily cook rice, Senjuro!" Kyojuro confidently stated as he took a cup of rice out of the cloth bag, Senjuro let out a defeated sigh as he watched his brother turn on hot water to clean the rice instead of cold... this was going to be fun.
-
Kyojuro later realized he in fact- could not cook rice. He felt warmth creep up his neck as he stared down at the scorched, almost unrecognizably burnt rice grains.
"I swear, I only looked away for a moment!" He practically yelled, trying to mask his embarrassment. Only for you to give him an unreadable look before you gently removed the pot of from his hold and disposed of the entire thing, as there was no chance of saving the also scorched pot. (Honestly parts of the pot looked on the verge of melting)
"I told you, Kyojuro!" Senjuro whispered as he propped open one of the windows in the kitchen in hopes of removing the burnt smell and smoke that filled the air and his older brother stood slightly behind him seemingly unsure of what to do.
"Hey, I didn't know it would burn, I figured it would just cook faster on high, and then we could eat sooner!" He rubbed his neck and looked down, trying to push down the humiliation he felt. You must have thought he was unless... A grown man who couldn't even cook rice.
"You know I don't recall ever seeing someone scorch rice before... I'll show you how to properly make it tomorrow, okay?" Kyojuro's head sprung up at your offer. The look on his face was almost reminiscent of a dog being given a table scrape after going on a day's long hunting trip. To say he was elated at the offer would be a serious understatement.
"That actually worked?" Senjuro mumbled under his breath in shock as he stared at the two of you. His brother's confidence seemed restored at the offer, and you had a cool and calm air around you. As much as your personalities seemed to contrast, he couldn't help but think you complemented each other nicely, and made a charming pair.
Senjuro never pretended to understand his father, but he was starting to see why he chose you for Kyojuro. With someone like you, you'd make him slow down and enjoy the smaller things, and with someone like him, you'd open up more and hopefully grow more spontaneous. You two gave each other balance. He may not have agreed with how Shinjuro went about pairing the both of you, but he couldn't deny that this was one of his father's smarter choices.
"Morn'in, did something burn?" A gruff voice sounded from the doorway. Speaking of the man, it seemed he'd decided to join you that morning.
"Yea, it seems we won't be having rice this morning." You began to put the salmon and vegetables on a serving dish, missing the confused look on the Rengoku Patriarchs face, as he realized what burned.
"How'd you manage to burn rice? You were able to make it just fine yesterday, and all the other days before that." The man said gruffly as you handed him the serving tray silently ordering him to take it to the table, and much to his son's shock and amazement, he did without complaint.
" It wasn't (Y/n) who burnt the rice, Father." Senjuro said with humor as his father's eyes narrowed slightly in a silent question because it's been years since Senjuro burnt rice.
"I was the one who burnt the rice." Kyojuro spoke up after a moment of silence, the tips of his ears turning red, and embarrassment radiated off of him, despite his owlish features being pulled in a large smile.
"I'm going to show him how to properly make rice tomorrow, but for today, Muso soup and some salmon with veggies will have to suffice." If Kyojuro hasn't been looking, he would have missed your humored expression as you put a bowl of soup in each person's spot. In that moment, his features relaxed into a calmer, pleasant smile.
You all sat down and gave thanks before starting to feast on the meal. Kyojuro and Senjuro imminently began to dig in, but you noticed Shinjuro hadn't started eating yet, seemingly too occupied with his reading.
"Rengoku-Sama." You said expectantly after a few moments of him not making any moves to put the book down. The man in question looked up, giving you a questioning look when you hadn't continued speaking after saying his name.
"What is it?" You gestured to the book with a blank expression.
"It's not proper to read at the table, Sir." You said simply, no accusatory tone in your voice, but making it clear you wanted him to put the book down.
"Fine, I guess I can get to the damn thing later." The man grumbled before begrudgingly placing the book by his side.
It was at that moment that Kyojuro noticed his father was clean shaven that day, and if his temper (or lack thereof) meant he hadn't hit the sake yet, or at least not enough to inebriate him to the usual degree.
"You look well, Father." Kyojuro decided to voice his thoughts, he hoped that this wouldn't be a one-time thing. His father only responded with a grunt of acknowledgment. Still, this pleased Kyojuro, who was used to not getting a response at all from the older male most of the time.
"When did you come in from your mission?" Shinjuro asked, smoothly changing the subject as he started to eat his food.
"Late last night, the mission itself went smoothly, I decided to come home instead of staying at the local inn." Kyojuro looked up at the male not having had expected that question but responded as he continued to eat.
"How about the trip back? You must not have gotten much rest if you came back immediately." You watched as Senjuro's brows pulled together in worry the moment the question left his lips. You couldn't help but wonder how would Kyojuro respond?
"The journey back went smoothly until a third of the way back. As you said, I hadn't gotten much sleep, so a demon was able to catch me off guard, embarrassingly enough. Though, it was quickly dispatched after its first attack." Kyojuro made sure to stress the last bit as too, as to not worry Senjuro further.
"So you were injured?" The boy frowned seemingly not reassured. You decided to save poor Kyojuro in that moment and redirect Senjuro's attention.
"Yes, he was, but don't worry, we got him fixed up when he made it home." You softly squeezed the boy's shoulder, which seemed to finally ease his worries.
"Next time, just go to a damn inn boy." The oldest Rengoku spoke up suddenly, in the same gruff tone his voice always seemed to carry, but the look in his eyes had shifted to something unfamiliar. He almost seemed... worried? It didn't seem the boys could see this as they turned their attention to him, not that you could really blame them with how he was glaring.
"I believe what your father is trying to say is we'd all prefer it if you wouldn't put yourself at risk, and that if you're tired, you'll go to an inn, instead of racing back home." You then let out a small sigh before looking at him voice softening, "Not that I minded patching you up, I understand such injuries come with your occupation, but I'd like you to avoid injuries if you can, it'd put mine and everyone's else's minds to ease." Senjuro nodded firmly in agreement with your words, and Shinjuro only looked at his eldest son with an unreadable expression before focusing his attention on his food.
"I'm sorry if I worried you, but I'll be sure to keep your words in mind in the future. Thank you!" Kyojuro gave you a genuine smile before he seemed to revert back to his boisterous and energetic self.
The rest of breakfast went without a hitch, most of the talking being done by the two brothers, with you contributing to the conversation when you saw fit, and their father remaining silent.
"So, you took (Y/n) to the market? Did you do anything else?" Kyojuro inquired curiously after Senjuro told him about you going to buy ingredients.
"Oh, we saw Toshi-San! She seemed well. " Senjuro mused as he set down his chopsticks once he finished his meal.
"That's good to hear! She's been running that stand of hers since before I was your age! I actually don't remember when she first moved here. It's been that long!" Kyojuro looked up as he scratched his chin in thought. He knew the old woman had moved here at some point when he was a young boy, but he had no clue when. Though he was aware she knew his mother to a certain extent as he remembered visiting the old womans stand and even her home as a young child.
"She was a matchmaker before she was a vender." Shinjuro said simply with a shrugged as he took a slow sip of his tea.
Senjuro's head cocked at his father's words, "She'd mentioned that before, I think she's from Tokyo? That's where she worked before moving here." Shinjuro only shook his head, and the boys looked at him with silent questioning gazes.
"No, before she left for the city, she was a matchmaker here originally..." Shinjuro's voice drifted off and he was seemingly lost in thought.
"When did she leave for the city?" You spoke after a few moments of silence. Truly curious to learn more about the energetic woman.
"Twenty years ago, maybe more? Her husband passed away, and she moved to the city with her boy. She came back when Kyojuro was, maybe seven- Why does it matter?" When the man gave the three of you an irritated scowl, you knew it was time to switch the subject, and it seemed Kyojuro did as well.
"No particular reason, Father." Kyojuro's eyes then met yours, and his face lit up as if he'd thought of the most brilliant idea, "Say (Y/n), why don't we go to the market today? Senjuro mentioned while we were cooking you wanted to make a cake. While we're there, you guys can get the ingredients you need! We also need a few odds and inns, since it's been a week since you last went to town!" His eager voice bounced off of the walls of the dining room and it almost seemed as if his hair was blowing in the wind despite no draft being present in the room.
You felt a little skeptical about letting him go out so soon after being injured, but almost as if he read your thoughts, he quickly reasured, "I assure you (y/n). I wouldn't propose going out if I didn't think I'd be up to it!" This seemed to satisfy you and you nodded in reply.
"Alright then, we can go a bit after lunch."
Tumblr media
"It's so beautiful out, especially with the leaves starting to change color." Senjuro comments with a content smile as the three of you took in the atmosphere the trees that dotted the area provided.
You hum in agreement before turning to the boy, who was walking by your side, "It truly is, Autumn is one of my favorite seasons for that reason."
"Yes, I can agree. The cool weather Autumn also brings makes it far more comfortable to work as a slayer compared to summer!" Kyojuro nodded as he joined in on the light-hearted conversation.
"I'm sure it does. Those uniforms don't look like they'd be all that comfortable to work in, especially in the heat." You look up in thought, thinking about the long sleeves and pants of the uniform and how sticky with sweat they must get after each mission.
"They're fine most of the time but can be uncomfortable in the heat, but the fabric is strong and helps combat some injuries so it's a small price to pay!" His voice boomed, scaring some birds out of a nearby tree, but not catching you or Senjuro off guard.
"That reminds me, how did your mission go, big brother?" Senjuro perked up as he awaited his elder brothers answer eagerly.
"The mission went well! The demon was quite elusive, but I was able to defeat it with minimal casualties." Senjuro, in that moment, looked to his older brother as if he'd hung the Stars and spoke with a gleam in his wide eyes,
"I wish I was strong like you, Kyojuro!" His comment wouldn't have caught you off guard if it didn't seem to have a hidden meaning making you frown.
"Why, do you think you aren't strong, Senjuro?" You quickly wiped the small frown off of your face as he turned to look at you as to not give him the wrong impression.
"I'm weak... No matter how hard I train, I can't perform flame breathing properly." Senjuro looked down in shame and humiliation.
You and Kyojuro both felt your hearts constrict to an unpleasant degree, and right when Kyojuro was about to reach out to comfort his younger brother, he realized you'd beaten him to it. You'd already had grabbed the youngest Rengoku by both his shoulders, "Senjuro, look at me." You gently grabbed the young boys chin making him look into your firm unwavering gaze, "You must understand that without failure, success has no true meaning. Just because flame breathing doesn't come easy doesn't make you weak. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses; yours may lay somewhere else."
The boy looked up at you with watery eyes before letting out a ragged breath and asking, "What is my strength (y/n)?" Clearly this had been weighing on the poor child's mind for quite a while.
"I don't know, that's for you to learn with time Senjuro, but never let anyone tell you, you can't do something. It's never over until you say it is." The boy quickly sprung forward after you finished your speech. His arms circled your waste in a deathly tight grip. You hesitated for a brief moment before settling on hand on his golden locks and another on his back in a comforting manner. It wasn't that you were uncomfortable with the boys' sudden affection, just unsure of how to respond.
"Okay... I promise." He mumbled into the soft fabric of your kimono.
Kyojuro stood stuck in place. He felt as if a freezing bucket of water had been poured over him as he watched the two of you . In that moment, despite the fact you looked nothing alike. The two of you reminded him so vividly of his departed mother and himself as a young lad; your calm but firm expression, the way your hand softly caressed Senjuros hair in a comforting manor, and most importantly the wisdom your words held. The way you treated Senjuro also reminded him of the kindness she held, a kindness he'd never thought he'd see in another human being... He almost felt as if he was looking back in time.
"Kyojuro, are you alright?" Your calm tone paired with your slightly furrowed brows pulled Kyojuro out of his reminiscent thoughts.
"Ah, y-yes (y/n)! Why wouldn't I be?" Kyojuro quickly smiles, erasing the surprised expression on his face in an instant. As he looks at the both of you. He noted that it appeared that Senjuros' tears had dried, and the boy seemed at ease.
" I just thought I would ask. You seemed lost in thought." You took a small step towards the male though you maintained a reasonable distance, as you did want to offend the Hashira. This proved to be an unnecessary worry as Kyojuro took a step forward narrowing the space between the two of you before gently taking your smaller hand in his own with a slight squeeze, "Don't worry about me, I was remembering a fond memory." He gave you a small smile, and at that moment, there was a sense of calm and understanding surrounding the both of you.
"That's relieving to hear. Perhaps you would be willing to share this memory with me sometime over tea?" You politely suggested before your eyes narrowed on a piece of lint, which you quickly flicked off his broad shoulders.
"I would like that! Would you be willing to make that tea you made when you first arrived?" The flame locked man bent his head slightly to the side, catching you gaze once more.
"Yea... whatever you'd like." Despite your calm expression, a blush had spread across your face, and your heartbeat had begun to rapidly increase
The rest of the walk to the was uneventful, and once you arrived to the market, Senjuro decided to split off from you and Kyojuro. He reasoned that you'd be able to get the things you needed faster this way (not that you were in a rush in the first place),and walked off before you could question him further, leaving you and Kyojuro alone to set off in your search for the things on your part of the list.
"Uh Kyojuro, did you hear that?" You looked around the busy marketplace wondering if you had finally gone mad or if you actualy had heard someone had call your name.
"I didn't hear anything (Y/n)!" Kyojuro says while sporting his usual mile, making you sweat drop slightly. There was no way someone hadn't called your name, right?
"Are you su-"? Your question was cut off by the sound of who you realized to be the woman you'd met the other day, "(L/n)-San, Rengoku-San! Over here!"
"Oh, I suppose you were right (Y/n)! Someone was indeed calling for us." The way Kyojuro laughed self-consciously caught you off guard. You'd taken him for a confident and boisterous man. Being embarrassed about burning rice was understandable but this?
"Yes, let's go greet her. She looks eager to speak with us." Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Why was she looking at the both of you like that? As if you were an infamous pair out of an old epic.
"Rengoku-San, it's good to see you're back in town and showing (L/n)-San around, aye!" The older woman said with a slight teasing glint before continuing with, "You both look so well together! It reminds me of my days as a matchmaker. Seeing all the lovely young couples prepare for the rest of their lives, it was a truly wonderful thing!" The older woman gushed as she clapped her hands and looked between the two of you.
"Oh, uh - thank you, Toshi-San. How have you been?" Kyojuro answered slightly flustered, but still maintaining his polite demeanor.
"Oh, I've been well dear. Looking at you both remind me so much of Shinjuro and Ruka when they were your age!" The woman looked at you with a reminiscent gaze.
Kyojuro's eyes widen a fraction at this, and his eyebrows raised ever so slightly in interest. He hadn't realized that the woman had known his mother and father that long ago.
"So, when's the wedding?!" The artist grabbed both yours and Kyojuro's hands, practically vibrating you both with her excitement, as you just stood there in shock and Kyojuro with his never wavering grin.
"Mother, please stop harassing those two." An attractive man with tanned skin and slight stubble sighed as he entered the stall, setting down a large wooden crate with a grunt.
"Oh dear, I suppose I did get a bit carried away." The grey-haired woman blushed slightly and laughed releasing the two of you from her hold.
"It's alright, we haven't settled on a date yet, actually." You answer the woman's previous question politely with a raised hand.
"I was surprised when Mother told me about meeting your fiancé." The man, Toshi-San's son directed to Kyojuro as he began to stock the shelves.
"Only because we thought you were going to see the day you settled down Rengoku-san." Toshi-San added with a slight tease.
"You've always seemed married to your job, whatever that may be. What changed?" Toshi's son stood and flashed Kyojuro with a curious smile, which the man returned.
"I have always been dedicated to my job. And to answer your question... I suppose some things change, despite how much one might feel uneasy at the idea at first." Kyojuro caught your gaze for a split second before turning back to the man and laughing light heartedly, making your breath catch in your throat.
'What does he mean by that?'

And scene! Okay, we're getting somewhere now! If you've been paying attention, you might be able to peice together future plot points,or maybe I'm pulling your leg?🤔
This chapter took me a bit to write, as I've been quite busy lately, I'm not sure if I like how, it turned out, but it'll never be perfect. I actually originally wasn't going to have Toshi-Sans son make an appearance at all in the story, but I chose to include him because I was struggling with the conversation between you and Toshi-San, and his characters entrance redirected the conversation. Edited:8/7/23 (I like it much better now lol)
Taisho era secret
Kyojuro & Senjuro: Welcome everyone!
Senjuro: Today's Taisho era secret is about Toshi-San's son, Kentarō.
Kyojuro: I've known Kentarō since I was a young child, and in that time I've learned that while he is quite the artist, he refuses to pick up a paint brush!
Senjuro: But why?
Kyojuro: Well ladies would commission him and ask him to paint them like "French girls" Whatever that means!?
Author:*Whispers in Kyojuros ear
Kyojuro: Oh my! That is quite scandals! Well after time of one girl in particular kept asking he ended up snapping his brush in rage and vowed to never paint again.
Senjuro: Thats unfortunate but big brother, what did they mean by "French girls" is that some sort of western expression?
Kyojuro: Well, uuuuhhhh you see Senjuro-

 typed in random anime man into Google and this is the first photo that popped up so I'm using this as reference to what Akira looks like.

Tumblr media
It was a beautiful day today.
That's usually what the default positive thing you thought was whenever something went wrong or you were feeling bad. You'd look outside and even if it was raining, you'd still find something outside to think about. The clouds looked like funny bunnies today. The next the sky would be a beautiful blue. Those flowers look wonderful. The snow looked sparkly in the sunlight.
Anything to stay positive in the crazy world ruled by creatures unseen and more powerful than the average human. You've never seen one personally thank the gods, but you knew something must've been going on with all of the disappearances that's happened for hundreds of years. Whether it's some humans, natural accidents, runaways, or something else you didn't know but you weren't going to be one of the ones that ended up disappearing. You had a plan for your life.
You wanted to work on yourself and maybe find someone to settle down with, and then maybe have a few children later down the line when your career was solid and you knew you'd be secure enough. Maybe even adopt a few animals! You've always wanted a small pony! Maybe a big dog you could roughhouse and snuggle with. That'd be nice. Just you and a domestic life. But for now you were just content with just working at the local florist shop and putting your life together.
It wasn't bad. You got to help with lots of pretty flowers all year round, there was always the pleasant smell of flowers in the air, it earnt you a decent living, it wasn't too far from your house, and your boss was a very kind old lady who's been doing this for years. You were lucky to have found such a good job.
"Thank you for coming by. It's always so nice to see you again, Akira."
You briefly looked up from where you were watering a pot of begonias with an old teapot. One of the local men was in today buying a small bouquet of peonies for whatever reason he wanted them. Being a decently big town, you kinda knew him but with the town still being big you also didn't. You knew this man, Akira, was the son of one of the fishermen families while his mother's family were glass blowers. You only knew that because your boss mentioned that Akira's mother's family were the ones that made the giant glass greenhouse connected to her house, she used it to grow all her flowers year round. But outside of that and just seeing him around every so often, you didn't personally know Akira. But he also had a reputation for being handsome.
He certainly has the looks to back that up. Greyish-white soft hair. Silver eyes. A tall muscular physic. And a handsome face that looked like it was sculpted by an excellent artist. You only gave a brief look over your shoulder as the two spoke.. before going back to work. It'd be rude to stare while they spoke and you had a job to do which was to finish watering these plants.
"You too, Mrs. Satoshi. And may I say you don't look a day over forty."
A strong of chuckles that had you rolling your eyes and inwardly groaning. "Oh, stop. You always say the sweetest things to people."
"I can't help it if I wear my heart on my sleeve.~ But while I'm here, I might as well give you this." You heard a distant sound of rustling paper and a moment later Akira spoke again. "Here! I've been handing these out for everyone to see."
There was a pause of silence before your boss hummed again. "Your uncle finally gotten that display up has he?"
"Absolutely! He calls it an 'ocean viewing through glass' and he's planning on showing it off at the end of this month!"
"Having a small tank of pet fish is one thing, but who's ever heard of people keeping giant tanks full of fish just for people to gawk at? Anyone can just go down to the beach and see most of the critters in the water."
Akira gave a deep chuckle in return. "Oh it's going to be be so much more than 'just fish's, Mrs. Satoshi. The opening night is free to everyone who shows up, and there's going to be plenty to see."
"I'll certainly think about it. Tell your family I said hi."
"I certainly will." Footsteps carried away the man from the counter before they slowly came to a stop right behind you. The sudden feeling on eyes on your back had you pausing before turning over your shoulder and finding Akira staring at you with a half lidded smiling face. "I can't forget about your lovely assistant now!"
You blinked and a second later a hand held up a piece of paper to you. F/c eyes glanced at the parchment and noticed that he must've pulled it out of the bag slung over his right shoulder since a few more corners of paper were sticking out and the top opening. The paper made some crinkle sounds when he waggled it at you pulling your attention back to it, and slowly you reached out to take it from him. Your eyes gazed over it and it became pretty apparent that it was a flyer advertising the opening of a new business. Hand written too, detailing the opening date and time and other things.
"Oh...Thank you," you remained polite.
He smiled maybe a bit too widely but only turned to start walking away with the flowers in his hands. "I hope to see you there."
You watched as he left through the front door and slowly looked back to the flier in your hands.. before just putting it away and carrying on with your business. The roses were in need of the water and the flowers weren't going to water themselves.
"You know I think he likes you."
"...What?" Your head turned to the smiling older lady.
"He passed by here practically every day and he always gives a look at you through the window," she teased, "He's a rather handsome young man, and his family has such a profitable business."
You grimaced. "That's just really creepy. If he likes me then he can be a man and talk to me about it, and I don't even know him. We're strangers. Besides-" You turned back to the flowers pouring more water from the large teapot in your hands. "-he's not my type."
You just wasn't feeling like getting close to Akira. He gave you a bad feeling, and genuinely he really was not you type. He looked really handsome but it was more than good looks that counts. What about personality and character? Nah. The other girls could have him for all you cared. The older woman only hummed in thought before shrugging.
"If you say so, Dear. Just remember you're only young once. It wouldn't hurt to find someone nice to settle down with before it's too late."
"I also have my whole life ahead of me so I have plenty of time to settle down and find someone if I even wanted to. I don't want to rush into anything that I'll just regret later."
You didn't want to end up like so many unhappy couples you've seen over the years. Fighting and yelling and having affairs- No. You didn't want that. You were going to take your time and if someone comes along then it'll happen. If not- Well you can always get that pony or dog you've always wanted to keep you company. You didn't need to be married or have children to have a good fulfilling life.
Besides you were perfectly content right now with how things were. You didn't need anything changing or any surprises. Everything was just fine how they were. Not a single thing needs to be added.
"Are you going to his uncle's grand opening? I think it would be quite interesting to see what all of the excitements about."
"I don't think so. It's just going to be a bunch of fish in giant tanks. If you ask me, that's too much work to maintain. Not to mention that the amount of cleaning the tanks and constantly hauling new water to replace the old sea water-..." You shook your head. "No. Not worth it if you ask me."
She hummed turning to grab a pair of tweezers and cut away the dead leaves off a miniature rose bush. "Well you never know. It might be fun to just go and look. It is going to be free after all. "
"Maybe."
You both left the conversation at that and didn't bring it up again. There was no point. You didn't want to go and really you shouldn't to not give Akira any more encouragement for his creepy behavior. It made a shudder run through your spine and you cringe in disgust. You'd definitely be avoiding him from now on. You'd just ignore him and everything would be fine again.
With a sigh of relief, you just went on about your day and ignored the feeling in the back of your mind. It was nothing.
You hadn't heard anything else for the next three days, and it was just business as usual around here. You were having a peaceful time with your work and had all but forgotten about the encounter with Akira or his uncle's 'grand opening' except for the occasional old flier on the ground or the occasional topic of it being brought up in conversation, but it wasn't very often and you'd forget about it quickly after anyways. But there was one strange thing that happened to at the end of the week. It was really a spectacle. Really it was. Not really a thing you'd usually see around these parts. You hadn't even noticed it really, with your back towards the roads. You were too busy helping your elderly boss pick up big plant pots outside that her frail body was too weak to lift. You'd be needing these for an upcoming big delivery for (ironically) Akira's Aunt Linna as you were informed by your boss. Apparently she was planning on adding a whole lot of giant rose bushes around her home and these heavy pots were gonna be used to transport the bushes over once they were ready in one of two weeks. Unfortunately your work was interrupted by your boss when the kind lady looked over her shoulder and gasped catching your attention.
"My oh my." She looked surprised with a hand to her chin.
You followed her gaze and paused surprised as well as a few other people on the streets around you. Coming from up the road was two giant stallions being pulled along by a strong looking middle aged man. He was cursing at the animals straining to pull along their cargo and angrily whipping the reigns with each curse.
"That's sick!" The words escaped you before you could even think.
A nasiating disgusted feeling churned about in your stomach as you watched as the poor animals strained and slowly came up the road and past you both. The sounds those poor ponies were making made you want to grab a whip and swing it at the gruff looking man as they slowly walked by you. The cargo they were straining to pull was...Well you couldn't tell what it was. It was BIG. At least six feet high, ten feet long, very rectangular, and covered by old wet tarps tied together by ropes. Your eyes widened looking up at the thing as it slowly pulled past you with the man yelling at the struggling ponies, briefly a shadow fell over you both and you froze solid as it continued to be pulled by you both.
"It ..seems like they had come up from the beach. That's probably one of the tanks Akira's uncle wanted for his opening," your boss eventually broke the silence and pointed out the size of the presumed tank.
You didn't say anything about it for you were frozen in shock. For your eyes could have SWORN they saw the brief sight of a hand and half a face peeking out at you from a gap in the tarps..The light. You told yourself. It was just the light playing tricks on you. There's no way a human was under that tarp. You were seeing things. You shouldn't involve yourself in this. Forget it. Don't get involved in this. It wasn't worth it. Nothing good would ever come out of sticking your nose into other people's business anyways. You turned away from the sight of the cart disappearing and the distant cries of the man's cussing to place another heavy pot down off to the side, the last thing you needed was unnecessary drama in your life.
Besides it's not like whatever Akira's family was doing would affect you.

Kyojuro Rengoku x Wife! Reader
18+ MDNI!🚫
CW: NSFW Content, minor angst, controlling/manipulating behavior, fluff-ish.
Y/N POV
Scenario : You've recently married into the respected Rengoku family, and while you continue your work as a demon slayer, life starts to get a bit messy. Balancing your duties becomes a real challenge as you navigate the challenges of married life. You find yourself having to make tough choices just to keep your husband happy, all while debating to stay true to yourself and your calling as a demon slayer.
Marriage. Truly one of the most beautiful milestones a couple can achieve. Marrying Kyojuro has undoubtedly been my greatest accomplishment.
I still remember it vividly, as if it were yesterday. Surrounded by friends, family, and core members, we pledged our lives to each other. Though it wasn't the most glamorous wedding ever seen, it was enough. Because really, all I've ever wanted was Kyojuro, and now, finally, I have him.
For the first few months, our marriage was nothing short of perfect. I moved into the Rengoku estate with Kyojuro's family, assisting Shenjuro with chores and gradually trying to get closer to Shinjuro. Though I'm not sure how successful I was.
It was only six months in that I realized being a demon slayer and a wife wasn't as easy as I thought.
Before our relationship, I was Kyojuro's Tsuguko. He was simply my mentor, and I trained hard under him to get myself where I am today. It was later down the road that we noticed each other's lingering gazes, the occasional flirting, and all the other subtle hints of wanting to be more.
Kyojuro was strong, and I knew he wanted a family, but I simply wasn't ready to give up training and my duties as a demon slayer just yet.
Every day, after helping out around the estate, I would hike over to HQ and pick up where I had left off the previous day, training until the late hours of the night. I would often come home exhausted, which usually caused Kyojuro to worry. As much as I reassured him, he never seemed fully convinced.
Now, here I was, sitting at the dinner table with Kyo across from me. It was a rare occasion for us to eat alone together like this. We made small talk about our day and training, and then he finally stopped eating and put his silverware down.
"Little Flame, I think it’s time we have a serious discussion about the way things have been as of late,” his usual happy smile seemed almost nervous.
I set my spoon down on my plate, giving him my full attention.
“Yes? What is it?”
“Sunflower, you have been working so hard as of late, and it’s quite admirable. I truly admire your dedication to the demon slayer corps and your training!”
“But…?” I ask, confused.
“But… since our marriage, I’ve found myself in constant worry over you. Every time you go on a mission without me, I have to painfully wait for your return. Not knowing whether or not you'd be injured or even-“
“Dead?” I finish.
I saw his body tense up at the word.
“Yes, my love. Dead. I cannot even bear the thought of you never returning to me. It pains me to my core,” he seemed so sad, so worried about me.
I know Kyojuro, I know he didn’t mean anything bad by what he was saying. However, I felt almost offended. He too was a slayer, a hashira. I also had to deal with the fear of him returning with serious injuries or even never returning at all.
Did he believe me to be incapable of protecting myself? He was the very one who trained me. Even though I knew Kyojuro was strong, much stronger than me, it just felt like he lacked faith in me.
“You don’t think I’m strong enough anymore? Do you think marriage has made me soft?” I realized I might have come off a little too harsh, but my emotions were getting the best of me.
His expression seemed surprised, but I could tell. While he may not have used those words, that was definitely the gist of it.
I watched him get up from his place at the table and walk over to me. He pulled my chair out from under the table, then grabbed my hands and kneeled down in front of me.
His big, bright eyes were now staring up at me.
“You are one of the strongest people I know, my love. I know how capable you are, but please remember…”
He brought my hands to his lips, kissing them softly.
“You are my wife before you are a demon slayer. I cannot risk sending you off only for you to never return.”
I could practically hear the desperation and love in his voice.
Kyojuro wasn’t someone who would usually discourage anyone from pursuing something they're passionate about. So if he was now, I knew that it’s something he’s been internally battling with for a while.
“What about you? Is it not the same? What about my worry? What if you never come home to me?” I could feel my face start to heat up. Everything he was saying seemed to come from genuine care, but it felt so hypocritical.
“I am a Hashira, my little flame. I have a certain responsibility you do not have to burden yourself with. I shall retire soon, in just a few years. So please…”
There’s no way he’d ask me-
“Please retire your sword, Y/N. Please stay home for me. Please allow my heart to rest easy knowing you'll be here waiting for me whenever I shall return,” his voice was pleading.
I felt so conflicted. I’d worked so hard. All of these years of training to hopefully become a high-ranking swordsman myself. However, at the same time, I never stopped to consider my romantic life and how being married would affect things.
We both sat there in silence for a few moments, and I finally rose up from the chair, pulling him up off his knees along with me.
I looked up at him, reaching my hand up to rest on his cheek.
“Kyojuro, you are the only one I would retire my sword for. So please promise me, promise me you will always come home to me. Until the day you yourself retire.”
“I promise you, Sunflower. As long as I know you are safe and waiting for me, there is no demon that could ever keep me away.”
I felt his hand on my lower back and the other holding up my chin.
We both leaned in, our lips meeting in a tender kiss.
This kiss started so gently, so lovingly at first. As we pulled away for just a moment, staring into each other’s eyes, we realized how long it had been since we really enjoyed each other’s company.
After that, the kiss only grew hotter and more passionate.
Kyojuro swept me off my feet and carried me straight to our shared room at the back of the estate, the most private spot. It seemed fitting for newlyweds, after all.
As he gently laid me back on the soft futon, I couldn't help but stay focused on him. Kyojuro was simply beautiful. His hair, his eyes, his body, everything about him looked like he was perfectly sculpted.
My admiration was interrupted as I felt him begin to kiss me again. One of his hands traveling to my breasts, gently squeezing it.
The other massaging my thigh.
I feel him pull away from me starting to kiss on my neck traveling all the way down to my chest.
Kyojuro had always known my weak points and how to make me say yes to his every request. He knew my body just as well as I did, and now he was taking full advantage of that knowledge.
I could feel him pressing against me as he moved his hand down my body, lightly touching me. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer to me, wanting more.
Then I heard, Kyojuro's soft voice whisper these words, almost as a demand. "Enjoy this little flame, you've kept me waiting far too long.”
As soon as those words left his lips, I felt myself begin to relax. His movements were so gentle, so careful, so loving.
His fingers trailed down my sides, sending chills through my body. His hands went back up and caressed my neck, making me tremble. He kissed me once more, and I melted into him.
It was as if he had cast a spell over me, and all I could do was obey him. He was completely in control of me.
After a moment, I felt him move back down and remove my underwear, revealing my already wet entrance. His hand slid between my thighs, and I couldn't help but let out a moan as his finger slipped inside me. He was gentle at first, just barely grazing me, but it felt incredible.
"Is this okay?" he asked softly, his breath hot against my ear.
I nodded but I could tell that wasn’t enough for him.
“Use your words my love.” He demanded sweetly.
“Yes Kyo, it’s perfect.” I said, my voice trembling.
He leaned down and kissed my lips before pulling back again, smiling at me.
"I want to be inside of you," he whispered, his voice filled with desire.
"Please," I begged.
He removed his fingers, replacing them with his cock, his tip rubbing against my clit.
"Good girl," he whispered, thrusting into me.
I threw back my head, arching my back and digging my nails into his shoulders. His movements were slow and deep at first and then they became faster and harder, and soon my whole body began to shake. I couldn't stop the moans from escaping my lips, and I couldn't help but beg for more.
When he starts to speed up I know we are both about to reach our limit.
I feel his fingers interlock with mine and his lips pressing against mine again, but this time, he wasn’t just kissing me, he was also letting his teeth graze my bottom lip.
He was biting down hard enough to draw blood.
We were both so close and we were both trying to hold back but we couldn’t anymore. We were finally going to let ourselves release.
I was the first one to let myself go, arching my back as I moaned his name.
Then he followed not too far behind.
After he finishes, we just lay there for a bit catching our breath.
“I love you, Y/N,” he finally breathed out, turning his head to look at me.
I turned to face him as well. “I love you, Kyojuro.”
After that, the two of us drifted off in each other's arms for the rest of the night.
The next morning when I awoke, I was still trapped wrapped in Kyojuro's arms.
After a bit of struggling, I managed to maneuver my way out and make it to the kitchen.
There I saw Senjuro, who was already preparing breakfast for everyone.
“Good morning, Sen,” I greeted with a yawn.
“Oh, good morning, Y/N!”
“I'm almost finished with breakfast. Is my brother awake yet?”
“He should be awake soon. We both have to see Master Kagaya today,” I said, rubbing my eyes.
He stopped to turn and look at me.
“Did something bad happen?” he asked nervously.
Poor Senjuro always assumes the absolute worst in every situation. Well, I suppose in this case it’s somewhat understandable.
“No, Sen, nothing's wrong. Kyojuro and I are just going to inform Master Kagaya of my retirement. That’s all.”
He gave a puzzled look.
“Retirement? Why? Haven’t you been training for years to improve your sword skills to move up in the ranks?” he asked.
He was right. I know I shouldn’t go back on my word to Kyojuro, but I really was having second thoughts about my decision.
Senjuro could probably sense my doubt because his next response was:
"If this is something that you're not sure of, then you shouldn't do it. If you have doubts about this decision, then maybe you're not ready for retirement just yet."
His words really struck a chord with me.
Maybe he was right.
Before I could ponder that any further, Kyojuro had made his way into the kitchen.
"Good morning! How are my two favorite people doing?" he said cheerfully.
I smiled.
"Morning, Kyo. Did you sleep well?"
"I did, actually. Thank you, little flame," he walked over to me, giving me a kiss.
I could feel my chest tightening, nervous about what was to come.
The whole time at breakfast, I felt so spaced out. All I could hear was Kyojuro and Senjuro talking and the occasional grunt from Shinjuro drinking away at the table.
“Sunflower? Are you okay?”
I was snapped out of my daze by Kyojuro waving a hand in front of my face. All three of them were staring at me, kind of concerned.
“Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Sorry.”
I shook my head a little and looked down at my plate. I felt bad for Senjuro going through all that trouble to cook, but I simply couldn’t eat right now.
After we finished breakfast, Kyojuro and I headed out.
The thought that this would be the last time wearing my uniform with my sword by my side was so weird and almost uncomfortable to me.
I knew that this day would come eventually, but I always hoped in the back of my mind that Kyojuro would be the one to retire before me.
I had been so focused on training and my duties as a demon slayer that it had never even occurred to me how my marriage would affect everything.
I was now a wife. My first priority should be the estate, and helping Shinjuro while he was in his state of grief, and being there for Senjuro as well.
It wouldn’t be right of me to go against my husband's wishes either. Especially after the intimate moment we shared. Right?
As we made it to HQ waiting to speak with the master I felt my heartbeat racing inside of me.
The room was quiet, I could feel Kyojuro’s eyes lingering on me but I couldn’t bring myself to face him right now.
Both mine and Kyojuro’s attention was shifted as we heard the door open and Master Kagaya entered the room.
"Rengoku, Y/N. It's a pleasure to see you both," Kagaya said, his face as warm as ever.
"It's wonderful to see you too, Master," I replied.
"So what brings you two here? It seems urgent, judging by the fact that you came in so early."
"It is very urgent," Kyojuro began.
He then proceeded to explain our conversation from the night before, and how I was considering retiring.
"Y/N, this is a big decision, and it's important that you feel comfortable and confident in it. Do you think you can fully retire, knowing you won't be able to assist the demon slayers as you are now?" Kagaya asked.
I looked at the master and then glanced at Kyojuro. He seemed so proud and happy that we were here. I could feel the warmth radiating from him.
But, I could also sense the worry in his expression. He was nervous, scared almost.
I couldn't do that to him.
"Master, I've spent most of my life training for the opportunity to become a hashira. To serve the demon slayer corps and protect those who cannot protect themselves. But...I'm no longer just a demon slayer. I'm also a wife, and as such, I think it's only right that I focus on that," I answered.
The room fell silent for a moment.
"If you truly feel this is the right choice, then we support you, Y/N," Kagaya finally spoke.
"Thank you, Master," I bowed.
"Thank you so much, Master! I will never
forget your kindness!" Kyojuro bowed as well.
The two of us left the room and started to head out.
As we exited, we ran into a few of the other Hashira, who asked us about what we had gone to see Master Kagaya about.
They too seemed surprised and a little concerned when Kyojuro explained to them that I would be retiring so soon.
I could tell some of their reactions to the news annoyed Kyojuro. Shinobu used the word “controlling,” and you could see his smile almost falter.
"Controlling" was never a word I would have used to describe my husband. He just loves me, right? He wants to protect me. There's no way my sweet and kind Kyo would ever do anything to control or manipulate me.
Right?

Tumblr media
The low down: History is repeating itself and for once, Kyojuro is tired.
The things to know: Reader uses she/her pronouns, Absolute angst (I kind of got teary eyed while writing this), mentions of blood, character death, this mostly takes place before mugen train , ooc shinjuro but he's a nice guy promise, Venting, sobbing kyojuro, like literally this ray of sunshine is BROKEN, a peaceful and sober Shinjuro, Y/N is literally a bg character lmao sorry, daddy issues
Pairing: Kyojuro x Reader
W/C: A WHOPPING 3.8K WORDS, MY BIGGEST ONE YET!
Words/phrases to know:
Monstuki Haori Hakama: Traditional formal garment that would be worn as simplified attire by people in the Samurai Society (during the Edo Period)
A/N: Hey you guys, I'll come clean. This one is a doozy not necessarily in length but in the emotions I tried my best to display in this one. It's true, reader is nothing but a background character and I kinda apologize for that. I really wanted to write a fic that portrays a new leaf in Kyojuro and Shinjuro's relationship and what better way than with sacrificing Y/N? Anyway, I finally made a pinned post linking my masterlist and other stuff for my mobile users. I plan on posting this and my other stuff on AO3 probably tmr as well. I hope you guys enjoyed and DO TELL ME YOUR FAVORITE PART
Tumblr media
It was happening again.
Kyojuro laid wide awake within his futon, puffy and reddened eyes burning the ceiling with his intense gaze. The calming silence of the night was occasionally interrupted with your pained coughs erupting from the other room. Kyojuro ran a tired hand through his disheveled mane, completely fed up with it all.
The coughing, the wheezing, the piles upon piles of tissues that were stained with spots of blood and phlegm. The never ending servings of soup, the countless doctor visits that always ended on the same confusing and irritating note.
“It’s only a matter of time.”
Kyojuro didn’t hate a lot of things in the world, but that sentence he hated the most. “It’s only a matter of time.”
A matter of time until what? Until she gets better? Until she becomes the second one to leave them? What the hell did it mean? The situation weighed heavily on the Rengoku males, tension forever present within the household. At the beginning, all three of them would listen intensely to whatever orders and updates the doctors gave. They would each take turns administering medicine and delivering soup, massaging sore muscles that grew tired of being idle under a futon. Now, however, it was only Senjuro who listened. Kyojuro, as well as his father, continued to serve your every need despite giving up on worshiping the vague and aggravating words of the doctors.
Your lover tried to keep his cheerful façade on display as usual, but as the days went on and the coughing grew louder and longer, his smile would falter and heavy sighs would take the place of his boisterous laughter. The bubbling fear and anger within him replaced his ever so optimistic and happy demeanor. There was no doubt that his family took notice of his change no matter how hard he tried to hide it, you included. Any time he would be with you, you would always ask the same things:
“How have you been, honestly?”
“Have you been eating?”
“Are you taking care of yourself while you’re away?”
“Something is on your mind, my love. What’s upsetting you?”
You were easily satisfied with the simple “I’m alright, don’t worry about me.”, “yes” or “nothing is wrong my dear, honest.” You’d always give him that smile which he loved dearly before turning your back to him, returning to the warm embrace of slumber. Kyojuro’s beaming smile would always dissipate immediately when your eyes were no longer on him, fatigue tugging at his spirit. Of course something was bothering him; you were crumbling away right in front of him and he was absolutely powerless to do anything.
On the days he would be free from pillar duties, all he could do was roam the house aimlessly like a ghost who couldn’t pass on properly. Even at night when sleep couldn’t find him, he would wander the halls. His frame would always buckle and slide against the walls, silent tears covered his cheeks every time as he curled in on himself. This all felt like Deja Vu to the flame hashira, every second he experienced was just another second he had already gone through. However this time he would be the grieving partner. He was grateful, though, that instead of turning to alcohol like his father did once upon a time, he stuck to wandering like a stray dog.
Kyojuro grew to envy his father when your illness took a turn for the worst. He took notice of the lack of sake present in the house and the ever growing moments he and Senjuro would catch their father outside his room. He took note of how attentive his father was to your every beck and call, even to those that didn’t require him or ask of him in the first place. Even without being told he would do his damndest to ensure his would be daughter-in-law is alright. Opening the Shoji to let the sunlight flood into the room, cooking hot meals for the house and giving you the largest servings, taking up extra chores so Senjuro could keep you company. All these things Kyojuro wished he had the enthusiasm for. He loved helping you, truly, but his determination had depleted almost completely.
Rubbing his eyes, Kyojuro sat up, a heavy sigh leaving his dusted red nose. The corners of his mouth twitched, heavy with sadness as a revelation dawned upon him. His father was probably doing this out of habit, out of fear. He faintly remembered what it was like when his mother was sick, his father doing everything he could when he had the time to be at home. He supposed that maybe doing all of these things and more was a way for his father to cope with the haunting truth that another person he cared about would die due to unchangeable circumstances. Maybe, just maybe, his father hoped that things would get better and that he wouldn’t have to relive the same pain he had once experienced; even if it wasn’t him who would take it the hardest.
A single tear escaped Kyojuro’s fiery eyes, his hand quickly erasing it as he sniffled softly. No, the one to bear the pain the most would be him. It was his turn now, and no amount of soup and small conversations his father offered to the family’s source of light would change that. Getting up from his futon, Kyojuro wondered if there had been a curse placed upon his family. It couldn’t be a coincidence that this same situation would happen twice. Did a demon from his father’s past place a curse on the bloodline as it died to his blade? Damning every Rengoku to suffer absolute heartbreak?
Entering the dark hallway, Kyojuro silently stalked his way to the entrance, mind lost in sorrow. Staying in bed couldn’t help him and wandering the halls wasn’t something he was up for. Instead, he aimed for the fresh, crisp night air to fill his lungs and clear his mind. Oh, how he wanted so badly to purge the sickness in you and toss it to the farthest reaches of the earth. He wished to take you out to all your favorite restaurants again, to go on a picnic with you again, to bear witness to you playing with Senjuro under the cherry blossom trees again. He missed being able to kiss you during the cold winter nights that only a lover’s embrace could heat up. He could no longer give you the sweet kisses you had once pleaded for, your illness putting a stop to most intimate tokens of affection you were both accustomed to.
As a heavy sigh left his lips, Kyojuro opened the shoji and blinked in surprise. His father, broad back facing the house and his eyes focused on the sky above, was sitting on the engawa. Legs hung over the edge, a half empty cup sitting next to its owner. Shinjuro turned around slightly, acknowledging his son.
“I couldn’t sleep.” He explained softly, turning his attention back to the dark sky, the bright moon the only thing decorating the endless dark abyss. Kyojuro closed the shoji behind him and took a seat next to his father, burning eyes gazing at the cup in suspicion before looking at his father in silent question. Shinjuro picked the cup up and slightly turned it. “It’s just water.” He said simply, resting the cup on the other side of him before resting his hands in his lap.
“I..couldn’t sleep either.” Kyojuro said softly, hesitation ladened in his sleep-deprived voice. Although things within the house had gotten better since you entered his life and the lives of his family, Kyojuro still had a slight problem conversing with his father. You managed to change his father for the better, instead of heaps of sake littering the house only one or two bottles were kept in the kitchen before his father made the decision to get rid of it entirely once you fell ill. He started to eat with the family, although he barely spoke, only talking when answering a question or giving Senjuro or you his praises for the meal. He started training Senjuro in simple hand to hand combat, leaving the sword work to Kyojuro. He even had daily, lengthy conversations with you about an array of things; from what Ruka was like to how happy the birds seemed to be that day.
It wasn’t easy but progress was slightly made between the father and son. His father started returning any greetings he was given, he waited alongside you and Senjuro when Kyojuro finally arrived home from a grueling mission and even confessed to him that he was proud of him being a hashira but still preferred it if he turned away for his own safety. But, all of that still didn’t quite quell the nervousness Kyojuro had when it came to him.
“I know. That’s why you’re here, Kyojuro.” He remarked quietly, taking a sip of his drink. If he focused hard enough, he could’ve sworn that there was a twinge of tease hidden in his father’s voice.
“R-right.” He replied, voice barely above a whisper. For a few pensive moments, there was a cold silence between them. Kyojuro furrowed his wild eyebrows slightly, oh how awkward this all was! He didn’t know what to say to his father, even if he did he still wasn’t sure if he should voice it. He was in an intense battle with himself and by the looks of it, it was going to end in a draw.
One part of him wanted to vent to his father, to tell him all of his frustrations and woes about the depressing situation all of them were currently in. He wanted to bawl and curl up by his father, have his hot tears soak through the clothing on his father’s shoulder. He wished to be a little boy again, to trip and scrape his knee and have his father pick him up like he used to and comfort him. To hear him say: “It’s alright little one, you don’t need to cry anymore. I’ll patch you up, good as new.” like he used to. To plant a loving kiss on the top of his head and rock him in his arms. To call him a big boy when he was finally at ease and say how proud he was for being brave. All that he wished to have again.
The other part of Kyojuro, however, wanted to keep the peaceful silence between them. To just gaze up at the moon with his father and bottle up his emotions; to burn through it all passionately as he usually would. But even Kyojuro knew that would end in failure. He wanted to be as strong as he could, to bear it all on his tired and weakened shoulders. To give hope to his father -and to himself- that things would be alright and that you would bounce back better than ever. That you would play with Senjuro again, that you would do morning stretches with his father again in the garden, that you would plant millions of loving and passionate kisses all over Kyojuro’s face.
As the young man sat in silence, mind ravaging with his thoughts, Shinjuro broke the silence with the clearing of his throat. “I..think it would be best for the two of you to get married as soon as possible.” Kyojuro turned his head to his father, his puffy eyes blown wide as his father continued to stare at the sky. “It..would be best for all of us if there was one last good memory to hold onto.” With that, he finally gazed at him, tired eyes drinking in the clear signs that his son was crying earlier.
“Oh, um, yes. You have a point…I’ll bring it up with Y/N tomorrow morning.” Kyojuro muttered, calloused hands slightly gripping his yukata. Kyojuro’s gaze lowered to his lap as he tried to figure out how to pose his question. “Um, father?” He called out. Shinjuro answered with a gruff hum, taking another sip of water.
“Father, Y/N..isn’t going to get better, is she?” Kyojuro could feel his ears heat slightly at his question. He sounded like a small child that couldn’t grasp the concept of someone he cared about dying. He reminded him of himself once upon a time. Shinjuro grunted again, looking at Kyojuro.
“She won’t, Kyojuro.” He answered simply, flaming eyes once more concentrating on the moon. Kyojuro’s bottom lip twitched at the obvious confirmation, a painful lump slowly forming in his throat.
“Father?” He started again, picking at the hangnail that resided on his pointer finger. Shinjuro sighed softly and leaned back on his palms.
“Yes, Kyojuro?” He answered patiently, completely understanding the heavy task he was assigned once Kyojuro sat next to him. He knew how fragile his son currently was and he knew just how painful it was. Nobody was by his side when Ruka fell ill but he’d be damned if he wouldn’t be the lighthouse for the ship his son sailed on, horrible waves from the daunting storm threatening to capsize him.
“It’s all useless, isn’t it? The doctor visits and the soup.” He started, worry taking the reins and causing him to talk faster. “A-As well as the medication and the massages and-”
“Kyojuro.” Shinjuro interrupted sternly, shocking the young man and causing him to look at his father with worry plastered on his face. An iron gaze was focused on the young man’s sorrowful features. A sigh flew from the older man’s lips as Kyojuro looked back down at his fingers, eyes covered in a sheen film. “It may all seem useless, hell, it might actually be. But those things..bring her ease. It brings Senjuro ease. It gives them hope and it would be cruel to just stop it and force them to face the grave truth.”
“Right, I apologize.” Kyojuro said meekly, lolling his head back to keep from sniffling. A tender yet battle-worn hand rested on the top of Kyojuro’s head, giving him a slight pat before leaving his messy hair.
“It’s alright, Kyo.” Shinjuro reassured softly, sitting up straight again. He dithered, unsure of how to say his next words. If one thing Shinjuro wasn't good at, it was being reassuring. But, his son needed him and he truly didn't want to let him down this time. Never again, he silently vowed to himself as he took a deep breath, lips parting slightly.
“It’s okay to feel this way. I don’t have to tell you how hard this all is and how awful everything feels. But just know that I won’t leave your side for any of it. I’ll be there to hold your hand through it all and I’ll make sure that you don’t end up like I did. I promise you, Kyojuro.” He finished, a small yet reassuring smile resting on his lips. Kyojuro looked at his father in both bewilderment and comfort. For the first time in a while, Kyojuro was finally receiving the love and care that he had longed for from his father for a long time. With a slight nod, Kyojuro once more looked down in his lap, fingers tightly woven. A single tear finally broke through, leaving a small dot on his clothing.
“Father, I..I’m so scared. I don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t know if I can keep being cheerful anymore. I’m so tired, father. I feel like I'm lying to her, lying to myself. And I can't stand it, I just-” And with the last word to leave his trembling lips, a struggling wail escaped Kyojuro’s throat. Rapid streams of tears left his screwed shut eyes as his shoulders convulsed, rough hands frantically trying to wipe away the stains on his crimson cheeks however they just kept coming even stronger than before. Large hands grabbed the side of Kyojuro’s head and shoulder, pushing him into a tight hug. Soft hushes filled the heavy night air as Kyojuro’s wails grew louder and became filled with incoherent babbling.
“I don’t wan’ to lose her, I hate it. I hate it all! I-I wanna save her but- but I can’t!” Kyojuro spoke through an agape frown, drool beginning to leave his mouth while his hands gripped the back of his father’s yukata tightly as Shinjuro’s hand rubbed his back. “P-please, Papa, help me, Please!” He pleaded, voice muffled as he buried his head further into his father’s embrace. Shinjuro’s lower lip twitched slightly before burying it on the top of his son’s head, placing a soft kiss in the blond tresses.
“I know, Kyo, I know. I’ll help you out, don’t worry. It’s okay, my son...I promise.” Shinjuro whispered as the gut wrenching sobs left his son’s lips. Shinjuro hated it all too. He hated seeing the memories of Ruka’s final moments every time he visited you. He hated seeing Kyojuro slowly turn into a shell of his former self, he hated looking into the mirror that was his son. He hated seeing younger Kyojuro within Senjuro, always trying his hardest to raise everyone’s hopes and quietly asking him if Y/N will for sure get better; always being met with vague answers. It was all Deja Vu to the older man, as if he was watching the past play out right in front of him but ten times worse. They hadn’t even gotten married yet, let alone have one or two children. Shinjuro could feel nothing but the sorrow and anguish within his battered heart beating loudly in his ears as Kyojuro finally succumbed to his emotions.
Shinjuro started to slightly rock his son side to side as burning tears soaked through his clothes. He didn’t mind not one bit. He would have all of his clothes drenched in the salty tears of his children if that is what they needed. He would rock them and comfort them as many times as they requested, no matter how big the issue was or how old the children were. It was his responsibility as their father to do so, as well as something he owed to them for all the years of negligence.
Kyojuro’s wails died down to occasional sniffles and heavy breathing. His grip on his father slightly loosened as he partially uncovered his bloodshot eyes, gaze resting on nothing in particular. “What..am I going to do? I love her so much, it hurts. It hurts so bad. I feel like I can’t breathe, my lungs are burning. I-I’m so tired, Papa.” Kyojuro mumbled, no longer caring about how childish he seemed calling his father “Papa”. That’s what he was after all, Papa. Papa the Brave that chases the demons away every night before bed and when he’s away from home. Papa the Strong that can carry both his children and his wife on his body, carrying them throughout the house as tiny, sweet giggles filled the air. Proud Papa that teaches his sons how to hold a sword and praises them when they beat the air with wooden swords. Loving Papa that coats Mama in sweet kisses when he comes back home. Helpful Papa that saves little boys with snakes from sorrowful places and wipes his children’s faces every meal time. His Papa.
Shinjuro sighed softly, rugged hand traveling in his son’s hair. “I’m sorry, Kyojuro. There isn’t much you can do but be there for her. Love her as much as possible no matter what. Try to make her happy every day, even if you feel like giving up. And when you do feel like giving up, find me. And I’ll carry you.”
Kyojuro sniffled as his body felt the brunt force of fatigue. His wild eyebrows furrowed as he began to succumb to the sweet luls of slumber. “Okay, Papa..” Softly leaving his lips as he finally slept, Shinjuro kept his steady rhythm of rocking until the morning sun crested the horizon, birds singing their wake-up songs to the once still Earth.
Tumblr media
A warm, gentle breeze traveled throughout the lively forest as boisterous laughter filled the air. Shinjuro chuckled softly as he watched his two sons walk briskly ahead of them, jokes and funny stories exchanging between the two. Kyojuro laughed loudly again as Senjuro entertained him with a funny face in the middle of his story, swinging the picnic basket in his hand.
“Kyojuro!” Shinjuro called out, his sons giving him their attention. “Try not to laugh too hard, remember? You’re still healing.” He reminded the young man, gesturing to the bandages that were wrapped around his torso, hidden underneath his Monstuki Haori Hakama. Kyojuro gently rubbed the eyepatch that rested on his face, a habit he started to pick up when in thought, a beaming smile shining at his father.
“Don’t worry, I feel good enough to laugh. It doesn’t hurt, promise!” He assured before joining his little brother that was already ahead of the both of them and underneath the tree. Heaps of food sprawled out on the red blanket once Shinjuro finally caught up to his children, a bento and chopsticks already out for him. He sat down carefully next to Senjuro, content eyes soaking in the picturesque view that laid before him. Many trees danced with the gentle summer wind, birds swooping and diving into the canopy for their lunch. A nearby stream sang its song elegantly as the two sons conversed with each other. Shinjuro took a deep breath in, the sweet scent of the manju and flowers filling his nose.
“She would’ve liked this place, right Aniue?” Senjuro said softly, snapping his father from his silent appreciation of nature. Kyojuro lowered his chopsticks, a small smile plastered on his face. He rubbed his stomach gingerly, before turning his attention to his little brother.
“She would have. Both of them would, I reckon. However, they’d probably yell at us for being late.” He chuckled, producing a large smile from Senjuro, a smaller one from his father. “Not to mention, we didn’t make Y/N favorite food to bring with us.” He finished, laughing loudly as Shinjuro released a soft snort.
“She’d be mad at you, not me and Sen. I told you we should’ve made some but you insisted on rushing.” He retorted, Senjuro giggling softly at his father’s remark. Kyojuro chuckled sheepishly as he rubbed his neck. His father was right, of course. But you would forgive him, Kyojuro knew you would.
“Then let’s make some when we get home and give it to her. Now hurry up and eat before I end up taking everything.” Senjuro warned before quickly snatching up a mitarashi dango, eliciting a shocked and hurried response from his brother as well as a scoff from his father, joining in the competition.
Things hadn’t been fair to the Rengoku family and although things would forever change for them, one thing was for sure; no sorrowful bouts of Deja Vu would visit them. And if they did, Papa the Brave would be there.

“Oh, my beautiful flame.” Kyoujuro hums as he enters your shared bedroom, sending chills dancing down your spine as you await for him to approach from behind. You were applying your favorite color lipstick that would match well with his outfit of choice. Your desired taste was not on the menu when it came to your life now. You learned to accept it over time. His fashion taste was bearable, though, it reminded you of your place: beneath him.
Today was a special day; you get to meet his family. You have built up curiosity of Kyoujuro’s upbringing over the months you have been stuck with him. A man with a flame in his heart still manages to have ice in his veins. It was disturbing.
His large calloused palm found refuge on your shoulder, the heat sending a breeze upon your bones. You dared to meet his eyes in the mirror, attempting to mask the terror that lied within your pupils.
“Y-Yes, Kyoujuro?” You replied within a shaky breath, alerting Kyoujuro that you were still drowning in fear. He hated and loved it all at once.
“You look magnificent, my dear, but we must get going. My father and brother should not be kept waiting much longer.” Kyoujuro stated, keeping his gaze upon yours in the mirror. His words were calm and innocent, but his irises held dominance and control that dared you to try and make a fool out of him tonight in front of his family. You would never see the light of day again.
Nodding, you provide a false smile. “Okay, I’m ready.”
Your hand laces with your captor, his vigorous grip reminding you that even without chains upon your limbs, you are still within his shackles. You are always under his grasp and one thing Kyoujuro will refuse to do is ever let you go.
Approaching the Rengoku residence, Senjuro is quick to run out and greet his older brother. “Brother, you have finally arrived!” He beamed, a bright innocent smile glowing in the sunset. He looked just like his older brother. His locks were yellow with red tips, red eyes with yellow on the outside, and a smile that was soft yet sickening.
“‘Bout damn time.” A deep, drunken voice exited the home and into view. Kyoujuro is quick to push you behind him in a protective manner. Usually, that would annoy you, but this time, you appreciated it.
Shinjuro was a tall man, aggression swallowing him whole. You finally saw where Kyoujuro got his evil side from. His polite ways must come from his mother that is no longer here. You didn’t dare ask questions, but it was all starting to make sense now.
“My apologies, father. We were running a bit behind.” Kyoujuro apologized, his stance turning even more stiff when he noticed his father’s eyes lingered onto you.
Taking another sip of his sake, he gestured towards the inside of his home. “Dinner’s ready. Don’t let it get cold now.”
Kyoujuro led you up the stairs, Shinjuro’s pupils beaming upon you as you walked by. He mumbled something under his breath that wasn’t clear, but this sent Kyoujuro into high alert.
Sitting down around the dining area, Shinjuro sat at the head of the table. “Dinner smells lovely.” You compliment, earning a warning glare from Kyoujuro, but a less stiffened expression from Shinjuro. That was the only ‘thank you’ you were going to get out of him.
Starting off with the miso soup and white rice, you see where Kyoujuro got some of his cooking skills. Luckily, Kyoujuro has improved and made decent meals since you have been in his care.
Still, the meal was still somewhat edible and you were happy to be out of the house. Senjuro was the one to break the silence by flooding his brother’s ears about everything he wanted him to know. It was a very cute sight to witness.
“Maybe after dinner, I can show you some of my skills! I have gotten better with my sword, big brother!” Senjuro raved, not even noticing the way Shinjuro was staring you down, your spine stiff. Kyojuro is quick to wrap his arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him to show ownership.
“I would love to see it!” Kyojuro smiled, his grip around your waist tightening due to his father. You were not fond of Shinjuro, but you did think that Kyojuro was overreacting. His father is just putting up a harsh front, right? And maybe the seductive eyes hidden behind all that fire gaze was just your imagination mixed with Kyojuro’s paranoia.
This is all a huge misunderstanding, right?
Dinner carried on, Senjuro chatted his older brother’s ear off about any and everything. While Kyojuro gave his brother his full attention, his arm remained snaked around your waist and he was sure to watch you out of the corner of his eyes. Even with the protection you had and the evilness of Kyojuro’s glare, Shinjuro’s eyes still lingered onto you. You could not help, but squirm under the intense pressure.
Kyojuro noticed your discomfort, but when he opened his mouth to speak, his little brother chimes in, “big brother! I’m finished with dinner, let’s go outside—“
Senjuro grabbed hold of Kyojuro’s hand and practically dragged him outside. He was quite amazed by how strong his brother has gotten over the years. Besides, a promise is a promise. Kyojuro always kept his word, especially to those he held close.
You have mixed emotions when it comes to Kyojuro. He was familiar to you now that you have been captured for so long. You also felt safe from the dangers the world poses. Kyojuro was sure to remind you daily that nowhere is safe. The only true safe place is with him and him only. Now, that your safety is gone, you feel vulnerable, the predator gazing right at you.
The silence was thick and still as Shinjuro examined you, drinking his Sake. You were taught not to speak unless given permission to do so and in all honesty, you did not have much to say to this man.
“What are you doing with my boy?” Shinjuro finally muttered out, catching you off guard. “W-What?” You stammered, not believing your ears. “You deaf or somethin’? I said,” Shinjuro stood up, placing his hands on the table as he narrowed his gaze, “what are you doing with my boy,” he cupped your face, “when you should be with me?”
The calloused touch sent chills skipping down your spine. Kyojuro was right this whole time, his sick father did like you and now you are all alone with him. “I-I love Kyojuro.” You mumbled out, barely above a whisper. The fire that ignited in Shinjuro’s eyes worried you.
“Lies!” He exclaimed, slamming his hands on the table. A small gasp leaves you, fear written all over you. Though you were lying about having love for Kyojuro, you were obligated to be loyal to the man. You sure as hell was not going to cheat on him with his father.
Taking another sip of his sake, Shinjuro towered over you. Pulling you up, he bent you over the table. You attempted to remove yourself from the situation, but Shinjuro was obviously much stronger. There was no way to compete with this monster.
“Please don’t do this! Kyojuro! Help!” You cried, hoping the one person you despise would be your savior. Shinjuro pushed your face into the dark wooden table. “Shut it!” The older man growled as he began lifting up your dress.
Just when you thought it was about to be hell, a familiar voice is heard from behind you, “what do you think you’re doing with my girl?” Kyojuro asked, lowly. Shinjuro was not afraid of his son, but the sword that was pressed to his neck made him nervous.
“What does it look like I’m doing?” Shinjuro retorts, his voice not sounding as gruff as usual. Kyojuro let out a condescending chuckle. You were still held down so you could not witness the scene behind you, but all you know is that you are safe.
“Unhand her.” Kyojuro demanded, pressing the blade more to his father’s windpipe. Shinjuro contemplated for a second but respected his son’s wishes. You are quick to get up and give Kyojuro thankful eyes.
“If you ever touch my girl again, I will not be afraid to decapitate you right where you stand.” Kyojuro warned, putting his sword down so you can run into his arms. “Oh, Kyojuro! Thank you for coming to save me!” You beamed, snuggling your face into his muscular chest. Kyojuro placed a gentle kiss on the top of your head.
“Big brother!” Senjuro called as he entered the house, oblivious to what just occurred. Kyojuro hid his anger and as always, had a bright smile. “Go to your room, Senjuro. I have something to discuss.” He stated.
“But, we were—“ Senjuro pouted, tugging at Kyojuro’s heart strings. He walked over to his little brother, ruffling his hair. “I promise once we are done we can do whatever you want, okay?”
Senjuro smiled, hugging Kyojuro tight before running to his room and closing the door. You were nervous about what was about to go down, but nothing could prepare you for Kyojuro bending you over the table like you just were moments before. “K-Kyojuro, what are you—“
Lifting up your dress, his hand rubbed your exposed ass since he always made you wear thongs. “Teaching my father a valuable lesson on who you belong to.”
You did not even have time to protest. All you felt was his large thick cock entering your tight pussy, your moans immediately falling from your lips as they always do. All Shinjuro could do was stare in disbelief, disgust, and horror as his son fucked you in front of him.
“See this?” Kyojuro lifted your face up by your hair so your blurry vision as well as mewl expressions could be seen, “this pussy belongs to me. I’m the only man that makes her feel this good.”
You could not recall what was said as Kyojuro put all his anger and stress into your pussy. The wet sounds as well as moans echoed in the kitchen. If Shinjuro even thought about leaving the area, Kyojuro would be quick to stop him. This is what he gets for trying to invade you the way he did. Only Kyojuro claims this cunt and with each demand, “tell him who you belong to.”
“You, Kyojuro. I belong to you.” You whimper, being too cockdrunk to even realize what you were saying, but you knew the words were true. As long as Kyojuro is alive, you shall not belong to anyone else.
And even Shinjuro knows that now.

I don't know If this counts as an Emergency Request and I know I've already made like two, but can I have an emergeny request?!
I'm just now realizing how freaking messed up I am with comfort and knowing when I need help and Why I want and hate physical contact so much!
I'm terrified when people start yelling and I get really shaking and -twitchy when people start raising their voices becuase I associate loud voices with "physical punishment"
I hate asking for emotinal support becuase I'm afraid of being pushed aside and scolded. I'm now realizing why I want to be hugged with so much force and just scream!
I'm asking for Kyojuro, Tengen and his wives, Akaza and Sanemi in a scenario where fem reader is remebering her home life as a child so she suddenly gets really jumping, twitchy, emotinal, and anxious, but refuses to admit she needs help becuase actaully aknowleging it terrifies her, but then she hears someone loudly yelling and breaks down just wanting to squeeze and scream and becuase her family relationship, she doesn't know how to react when she is just genuinly comforted.
Please, I'm really wanting some comfort right now, even if its just ficton.

KYOJURO RENGOKU
kyojuro is checking senjuro's training, giving him advice and such, while you're cleaning the living area. you remember a moment from when you were young, casually: it's your mother scolding you because you're crying, then your father is here too... you sigh heavily and shake your head, as if to get rid of that memory.
you're unconsciously trembling the whole time, but keep on cleaning. every noise starts to get you more and more nervous, until you hear shinjuro calling kyojuro's name from his room, his tone always so rude, that you break down.
you fall on the ground, hiding your teary face and heavily shaking. kyojuro notices and is soon by your side, checking on you. senjuro goes to their father instead, avoiding him getting angry.
"y/n, what's wrong?" he asks you, trying to gently move your hands from your face. "i'll... i can handle this," you quickly reply, pushing him away. kyojuro frowns, not truly understanding the situation. "i just need to finish cleaning," you whisper and try to grab the cloth you were using to clean the table before kyojuro stops you.
"why are you crying?" he tries again, searching for your eyes. "i'm not crying!" you snap at him, not really making him back away. "baby..." it is as if you're crying even more at this point. kyojuro pulls you against his chest, circling you with his arms.
he's warm, his perfume is comforting and familiar, his big hands are caressing your back gently, soothing you. "w-what are you doing?" you ask, trying to move in his embrace. "i'm comforting you. you're not alone, darling," he caresses your wet cheek and smiles down at you. "i'm here for you, when you're feeling good and when you're down, you don't have to push away your feelings, or else it will get worse."
you stare into his glowing eyes, listening in silence. you've never felt like this before. you were used to force yourself to simply push forward when you were feeling down or overwhelmed, your parents never truly comforted you and kyojuro doing it so loving made a new wave of tears streaming down your cheeks.
"it's okay, let it out."
TENGEN, HINATSURU, MAKIO AND SUMA UZUI
[the memory is pretty much the same for the tengen & sanemi too]
you let a plate fall on the floor, making hinatsuru, who's standing by your side, jump. "wait, don't move..." she says, before kneeling down to gather the broken pieces before throwing them away. "i'm so sorry," you say on the verge of tears.
hina simply shakes her head and smiles at you. "we have plenty of plates, honey," she chuckles, before resuming washing the rest of dirty dishes.
you follow her example and keep drying the now clean dishes. in the back of your head you hear your father shouting at you for breking something and you jump, making another plate fall and break. hinatsuru turns towards you, nothing your distressed expression.
"lord tengen is gonna get mad... i'm so sorry, hinatsuru!" you cry, even though deep inside you know tengen rarely raised his voice at the four of you. "oh baby... don't worry about the plates, no one will scold you for breaking them," she tries to assure you, taking your hand.
makio comes into the kitchen, noticing the broken plate. "what happened?? someone tried to attack you?!" she raises her voice due to preoccupation, checking the whole area to make sure nobody is there to hurt you. "an attack?!" here comes suma. "hey!" tengen enters the kitchen too, to see what's the matter.
"he will get angry, he will scold me again, he will..." you curl up on the floor, cutting your hand with one of the broken pieces but you can't notice it. you're repeating the two phrases over and over, hina and tengen are the first to notice.
"there's nothing, calm down," makio pushes suma away, sighing. "but what if he’s hiding?" she cries, looking around nervously. "don't be dumb, how can he hide when there's five of us here?!"
"shut up!" hinatsuru shouts at the two, making you flinch. tengen moves closer, moving you away from the broken plate and checking your hand. "dumb baby," he whispers while carefully removing the splinter. "don't get mad at me please," you're crying at this point.
"i didn't wanted to break them, i swear!" you scream right into his face while more and more tears stream down your face. "i don't care about a bunch of boring dishes," tengen assures you deathly serious. "get of the kitchen," he orders the others, who quickly obey and say nothing.
tengen notices you're shaking while staring at the ground. "hey, it's okay," tengen cups your cheeks and kisses your forehead, trying to calm you down. "i... i don't know what to do," you whisper, simply staring at his face. "you’re very nervous baby, why don’t you try breathing with me?”
you follow his suggestion and once you’re more calmed tengen hugs you, cuddling with you. he leaves a few kisses on your head while holding you.
“this is… so comforting,” you mutter against his chest, surprising him. “t-that’s the point,” he stutters, noticing how you never actually asked for help and are the one who’s rarely seen seeking this kind of treatment. “you’re okay, darling.”
SANEMI SHINAZUGAWA
you’re walking by his side while you two go back to his mansion. he just finished training with iguro and you clearly see he’s a bit tired from the past few days.
when you walk past a little group of slayers, you don’t notice at first but they’re arguing about something. when one of them shouts you jump, bumping into sanemi’s side. “what?” he glances at you and notices something isn’t right. the following screaming and shouting stress you even more, while memories from your childhood take control over your mind.
“what’s wrong?” sanemi asks you, stopping mid track. “n-nothing, i’m alright,” you reply, as if you weren’t clearly shaking and on the verge of tears. “yeah, well that’s bullshit.”
you meet his eyes and flinch back a bit, scared of actually opening up. “i just want to go home…” you try to avoid talking about it and resume walking, moving rapidly. sanemi grunts in response but follows you, staring at you.
once you reach his mansion you’re quick to get the dinner ready, hoping to distract yourself, but you’re failing. sanemi follows your every action and it makes you even more nervous.
if i speak about it, he would push me away and start hating me, stating that i’m weak.
“okay, i’ve had enough of your shit,” he snaps and stops you. he grabs your hands and makes you turn towards him. “you’re all twitchy, you’re holding back tears and you’re clearly distressed. what’s wrong? someone hurt you?” you shake your head, knowing that you would end up crying if you speak. “y/n, i just want to help alright? but i can’t do that if you don’t tell me what’s wrong,” sanemi gets more worried as the time pass.
you notice it and you start crying, feeling bad for making him worry so much. “jeez,” sanemi pulls you into an embrace and you hide your face against his chest. “i’m so sorry!” you raise your voice, crying. his hands caress your back slowly, trying to calm you. “it’s okay,” he assures you and rest his chin on your head, keeping you close to his body. “i-i don’t know how i should react, i just don’t know,” you grip his uniform and sniff, shaking a bit. “just let it out, baby.”
sanemi keeps comforting you, making sure you know that he’s here for you and that it’s okay. it’s okay to cry and ask for help.
AKAZA
[i opted for a nightmare in his case, akaza is visiting reader during the night]
you’re turning in your sleep and sometimes little wails leave your lips, you’re sweating. akaza enters into your house and reaches the bedroom. you wake up right before he enters the bedroom and quickly wipe your tears, catching your breath.
dreaming your parents scolding and yelling at you is the last thing you expected. you’re feeling as if your every next move would be the wrong one and someone will appear to scold you, making you feel small and useless.
“you okay?” he kneels beside your futon and notices your status. “mh, i just had a nightmare. it’s okay,” you reply, trying your best to get over it soon. “you wanna cuddle for a while?” akaza asks, a gentle smile appears on his face. “oh, um… why would i?” you genuinely ask, confusing him a bit.
“well… i think humans like being comforted after a bad dream,” he scratches his neck while chuckling lowly. “i-i’ve never done that… i mean, i don’t know how…” you stutter and start crying without noticing. akaza frowns and raises his hand to wipe away your tears. “let’s do that, alright,” he says before laying down beside you. he circles your body with his arms and holds you closer to his chest. “t-thank you..?” you whisper, letting him do whatever he please.
akaza caresses your hips slowly, kissing your cheeks every once in a while. “i love you,” he mutters against your skin. “i’ll always be with you,” he promises. you scoot closer and smile, taking one of his hands into yours.

The laughter from downstairs woke you out of your slumber, as you notice a pillow was replacing Tengen. You smile to yourself as you hurriedly bathe and head down, ready for your day at the Rengoku Estate. The other wives all wave at you with smiles as they were preparing breakfast. You appreciate that if you are taking care of others, they take care of you. Tengen is sitting at the table, arms stretched as he pouts, wanting a hug. You walk over quite slowly and give him a kiss on his cheek before hugging him tightly. “y/n, my love, I need more than that! Too boring for me” He brought your chin close for a short kiss. As you back up he goes to bite your lip and you swat him away, both giggling. Hina walked in and pinched your cheek as you smile at her.
Makio brought out chopsticks and a basket, and bent down for a hug as she said “Good morning! I made extra bread for the boy” referring to Senjuro. You nodded and smiled, smelling the sweet scent. “How kind!” You exclaim with stars in your eyes. It was joyful when all the girls were interacting like one unit. “I hate how you have to go so far… so often” Suma says as she brings your plate. “I just enjoy their presence. You all should come with me one day.” You say with a bite.
Finishing your tea, you make your way to a bin near the front door as you overhear their complaints about leaving the comfort of the estate. You steal a glance at Tengen, as you notice the way he’s looking at the other wives. The look of admiration on his face as they discuss and try to make the others see their point. He suddenly stands up and walks over to you as you grab your hairpin to push your hair to the side.
"Take care, my love." He barely whispers and holds your hand as he slides a ring from the bin onto your finger. He sure enjoys marking you guys in his own way every time someone leaves. The carriage is stationed outside, and the girls are all waving from the front door. Tengen pushes your hair behind your ear and cracks a smile. “Send Kyojuro my regards” as he helps you into the seat. You nod, getting into the carriage and smiling at everyone as you start moving.
This part makes you so tense. Your hand reaches to knock on the main door to the Rengoku Estate. You brace yourself to be tackled by Senjuro, but are surprised when Kyojuro is there with his signature smile. "Good morning, y/n! Come in." He says in a soft voice. You bow before you enter. “It’s nice to see you, Kyojuro. Tengen sends his regards.” He nods "Oh, no need to be all formal with me. You’ve helped so much, I don't think the bowing is necessary." He laughs and smiles warmly at you. You look around curiously “Where is Senjuro?” Kyojuro closes the door and leads you into the kitchen. “He must still be sleeping” He wonders off to check on him. You get started on tea and breakfast for Kyojuro and Senjuro.
After a while you hear Senjuro’s fast footsteps and immediately put down the cups just in time for a hug. “Mornin’ Sen!” you bend down and ruffle his hair. The boy smiles at you sweetly. “Morning! You’re here early!” he walks to the table and sits. Kyojuro enters the kitchen “What should I do?” You get startled and avoid eye contact. “Well, nothing. Its my job today to handle things-” He cuts you off with a determined look “Nonsense! If I’m able to, I can help. You have helped my brother so much, and I’m home today” he looks at you with a genuine smile. You face him and grin. “Alright, take these cups to the table and bring Sen his bread.”
You grab Shinjuro’s cup and head to his room, placing it on the table next to him as you tell him good morning. Before closing his door you hear a grumpy greeting as he reads his book. On your way back, you notice that Kyojuro’s plate is moved to the table without you doing so and smile to yourself.
Your mind starts to wander as you see how Kyojuro acts with his brother, patting his back after he rips some bread for himself. ‘Tengen is a statue, me and the girls are always doting on him, and he’s sweet when he notices efforts, but how many efforts until I feel like less of a maid with benefits’ you think to yourself. You picture how Kyojuro looks at you with gratitude for handling the domestic work, and even- “y/n! Kyo said you allowed him to have some of my bread?” You walk up behind them and grab the loaf, “I did, and now that you mention it, I’ll take some, too!” Ripping yourself a piece, you split it in half and offered the other piece to Kyojuro, who took it with a grin towards his brother, leaving you both laughing as Senjuro pouts while eating. Eventually he finishes his breakfast and excuses himself to go buy some fruit, while Kyojuro is finishing his tea.
You glance at Kyojuro to see him already staring at you. “Every meal of yours never fails to make my taste buds sing, delicious!” You blush and look down at your thighs, “Thank you, it’s the best I can do. Is there anything else before I sweep?” He paused in the middle of taking another sip, clearly thinking of something. A sparkle of joy landed in his eyes, and a huge smile appeared. “I need you to help me plan something!” He leans in closer at a respectable distance, and tells you about Senjuro’s birthday coming up, and what his favorite meal is.
It makes your eyes water to hear that only Kyojuro celebrates his big day, and now he wants you to join in. You look at him with worry “But this is a family moment, and I think that I can only go so far in planning everything.” Kyojuro quickly interjected “y/n, my brother adores you, and” he paused to look you in the eyes, brows furrowed “ever since you started helping us take care of him, he is more joyful. It would be a shame if you couldn’t taste the amazing food we will prepare together, as well!” His face is so bright and cheery, did you hear correctly? “Alright, we will make this celebration a memorable one, for Sen’s sake!”
You felt lightheaded. The imagery of you and Kyojuro cooking, and it leading into a flour fight, and Senjuro joining, and you guys ganging up on him- your breath hitches in your throat as Kyojuro touches your arm. “I’ve started making a list on what we need, and I’ll depart as soon as he comes in!”
“Alright then” you spoke quietly, a blush creeping up your cheeks as you smile at Kyojuro, who you swore had a hint of pink before clearing his throat and staring at his notes. Senjuro’s footsteps are heard and Kyojuro moves his hand away. You get up to grab the broom and step onto the patio, as Kyojuro rubbed his brother’s head before stepping out, sparing you a glance and muttering about getting his father some beverage loud enough for Senjuro to hear.
You stare at him walking away, and wonder if silent confidence like what he has is more desirable in a man. You feel guilty. Tengen has his moments, but you must be patient. It’s 4 of you now, plus Tengen. It still isn’t right to introduce well meaning men such as Kyojuro into your fantasies, even if he would make a great father, and his maturity and cooperation is desirable as well, his calmness and-
Once the patio is clean, you enter the kitchen to prepare dinner in advance in cute bento boxes before you take your leave, honestly excited about celebrating Senjuro’s birthday as close you can, the next time you’re due to be here. Starting to seal up the bentos, Kyojuro enters and pops up next to you, smiling with his eyes closed with two bags of groceries. “Another satisfying meal in the works! It smells amazing!” He exclaims. You look at him eagerly, “Tastes amazing, too! It’s two simple dishes, I hope you understand.” He looks at you in surprise. “I would enjoy even a grain of rice, y/n.”
To hide your blush, you grab the rice ball you were going to take home and try to hand it to Kyojuro. You remember he’s holding the bags and move your hands up to his mouth, looking at his lips a little too long as he laughs loudly and bites a good chunk of the rice ball before putting the grocery bags on a counter. “Mmm, wonderful” he whispers as he passes his hand on the top of your head. He moves all around the kitchen putting the groceries away, showing you what combinations are possible for Senjuro’s special day, then stands behind you, watching you packing the bentos.
As it’s time for you to leave to your own estate, you look at Senjuro and Kyojuro with a hidden sense of sadness. “Alright guys, it’s time for me to leave…” Kyojuro is mumbling thanks for doing individual chores, while Senjuro runs, planning a hug attack. “Don’t go! It can’t be time yet, can it?” Kyojuro stands up to get him off of you, as he continues pleading, “Sleep over… or watch me train longer!” You and Kyojuro are laughing as you step down the front path, and it dies down as he reaches for your hand to prevent you from going further into the cold breeze outside.
Your heart drops as you realize that Tengen once again had not called the carriage as he usually does. You look to Kyojuro as his brows are furrowed and he avoids your gaze. He calls you inside to wait as he finds you a trusted rider. The way back is painfully quiet, and your eyes go dim as you recall how embarrassing it all was. The estate is on the horizon: bright, and some of the shadows inside seem quite lively. You panic as you dismiss the carriage and reach to open the front door, uninterested to know what’s happening inside.

Masterlist of Flame and Water
Kyojuro didn't know how to act towards you for several reasons after that one specific evening when he was struck, or more like you had set his heart ablaze, with love. It was impossible for him to see you in any other light and yet he tried his best to appear as he always had. It just backfired. He was either too loud or too quiet. Both of his behaviors made you raise your eyebrows in surprise, and the only thing he could do in that moment was to turn his face away as it was reddening under your attentive eyes. And these eyes of yours were so beautiful even if he felt caught by you. As if you were able to look into the depth of his soul.
But that wasn't the only thing that troubled him. He remembered your terrified face during your first meeting and the image still haunted him. Even if you had explained that he wasn't really the cause of it but his father was, it didn't really make it better. He was a Rengoku and proud of it. That meant he also looked like a Rengoku, like his father and their ancestors before and so would his descendants. The last thing he wanted was that his appearance might scare you or bring you bad memories. Or anything negative. He wanted to be with you, bring you joy and see this beautiful laugh of yours again.
But that also meant he had to finally address this issue between you and his father. With his decision to want to talk to you first, he walked along the engawa when he heard your clear laughter. His heart jumped at that moment, and he walked in the direction of the sound and saw you chatting happily with Senjuro. You both laughed at something he couldn't hear from the distance, but that did not matter. He just used that moment to watch you standing in the daylight and how you showed the excited Senjuro a movement with the bokken. Your gentle smile beamed brighter than the light that shone on you, and in general he thought that your smile suited you better than your silent and stoic expression that you had had in the beginning. You had come out of your shell and Kyojuro could only hope that he might be the cause for it. He fervently hoped so.
"So, what were you two laughing about?" Kyojuro walked up to you and looked at you both intently.
You and Senjuro exchanged looks and then started giggling. "Oh nothing, it's just something between me and Senjuro."
"Really? Senjuro? You don't want to tell me either?"
But the younger Rengoku just smiled and shook his head. "If Y/N-chan doesn't say it, then I won't say anything either."
Y/N-chan... What would he give to call you by your first name. What would he do to hear his first name from your lips. He tried to gather his focus back. There was an important matter to discuss. "L/N-san, there's something I'd like to discuss with you."
It was as if Senjuro understood so walked back inside, saying he's going to make some tea. You both looked after him before looking at each other again. "Yes, Rengoku-san?"
Perhaps he could fulfill this one wish of his and- "Please call me Kyojuro." He saw the endearing blush in your cheeks. "I'd like to take up the subject with my father..." He saw your smile fade and your face stiffen. He could have slapped himself for bringing back that terror in your eyes again. Even regretting and being pained by your stiffened body language, it was still something that needed to be addressed. Especially if he harbored those kinds of feelings towards you.
~~~
You weren't happy about the situation you were in now, but you did it for Kyojuro. You saw it in his eyes how important this issue seemed to be for him. How important it was that you know more about your past and that his father wasn't the murderer you thought he was. You had looked at him in disbelief, but his words made sense too. You must face him, face your past even if it was uncomfortable.
So, you sat with a tense posture behind the shoji door now and heard how Kyojuro addressed his father in the room behind the shoji. At first, he didn't answer him, then he gave a gruff answer, the wording of which you did not understand.
But what you caught was the pain and disappointment in Kyojuro's next words. You remembered what his greatest desire was and how this man destroyed it with his harsh words. The desire to open the shoji door and reach for him to give him comfort was greater than ever, but you held back and took a shaky breath. He had asked you to wait for him behind the door until he came to get you and not a second earlier.
"Father, it's important. There's a person here who wants to meet you."
"I'm not interested in your girlfriend! When will you get it?!" You heard glass shatter and inevitably flinched, grabbing your nichirin sword tightly. No, calm down, nothing is ever how it seems. Water changes too... A mantra you kept saying to yourself, but you knew that it would not help much as you must face the confrontation. You had to face this fear called Shinjuro Rengoku. If not for you then for Kyojuro.
Kyojuro didn't correct him and started again. "Father, please, it's important to her. She knows you from back then and-"
"Are you deaf?!" You could hear the drunkenness behind the words and suddenly some footsteps. "I don't give a shit who's there!" He opened the shoji door and a tall man in a traditional yukata robe towered over you while looking down at and on you.
You couldn't breathe as your whole body froze. The menacing aura that emanated from him was the same as back then. Your instincts cried out: Flee for your life, but you were in such a state of terror that you couldn't help but look up at this intimidating man while you gripped your blade.
"Are you trying to attack me in my own house?!" He saw you gripping your blade, taking a threatening step towards you but instead of getting into an attack position, you backed away, startled, and landed on your butt, practically crawling backwards. Your face reflected pure and sheer terror. Shinjuro didn’t expected this reaction and stared, surprised, into your wide-open eyes and in that moment, he remembered the little girl from back then. The same eyes that had looked at him the same way.
It was sobering for him to see you like this and he took another step, but not to threaten you again, but to help you up. But you were so full of adrenaline and fear that you followed your instincts. You got up at his next step and ran. You didn't even realize that you had crashed into another person and knocked them over. You also didn't notice how the freshly brewed tea got on your clothes and scalded you. The familiar pain was secondary, you had to flee and get away from here. You ran stumbling out of the house, heard shouts, but you didn't care. You just ran.
After a while you allowed yourself a quick glance back to see if anyone had been following you, but that was enough for you to not notice where you were running, and you banged your head against something hard. Before you knew it, everything went black, and you knew no more.
"Shit..." Shinjuro ground out through his teeth. Kyojuro had seen the chaos evolve before his eyes, and regret spread through him. He didn't wait for his father's reaction and was about to run after you, calling your name, when he saw the surprised Senjuro on the floor just collecting the fallen tea pot and mugs on his tray.
"Senjuro! Are you hurt?" He knew the tea was boiling hot and was concerned accordingly.
"N-No, I don't think so, Aniue." Senjuro looked down at himself and not a drop of the hot tea had landed on him, but not much had landed on the tatami mat either. "I-I think Y/N got the most of it."
Kyojuro swallowed hard, your fear and panic must have been so great that you didn’t even realize that you had been burnt. He quickly ran after you and couldn't see you anywhere, when he suddenly saw a few passers-by in the distance who were gathering around something. A bad feeling spread through him, and he approached the crowd when he saw you there unconscious. He felt his heart clench. Your hakama, which you wore in your free time and during training, was covered in tea and he knew at that moment that you must have been scalded. He carefully knelt down and picked you up, weaving through the crowd of people to get you out of there and to safety. With hasty steps he went back home when he was suddenly approached by an old lady whom he recognized as his neighbor. He saw her worried gaze wander between him and your unconscious body in his arms and offered her help.
Kyojuro sat and waited nervously behind the shoji door of the extra room where he had laid you down on a futon. It was thoughtful of his neighbor to look after you, since they were a household full of men. He was very grateful to the old lady for her help in this regard.
While he was waiting there, endless feelings of guilt arose in him. This was all his fault. You only gave in because he wanted you to. He shouldn't have pushed you and now you were hurt, and it was all because of him. He should commit sepukku!
His dramatic thoughts were interrupted by the gentle sliding of the shoji door and hope gathered in his eyes when he saw the old lady leave the room.
He got up immediately, but she gestured for him to stay seated and sat down next to him.
"Is Y/N okay? Is she awake?!" He was impatient in his concern and wanted to know how you were doing.
She explained that you were merely unconscious from hitting your head and that it was nothing major, but when it came to your burns, she fell silent and Kyojuro looked at her questioningly.
"Young Rengoku, there are severe burns on her legs."
His eyes widened. "Just from tea?!"
She looked at him and shook her head. "No, they are old – as if they came from a big fire. That's why there wasn't much to see, but I put a balm on the red spots with a special herb. I left it next to her."
Kyojuro heard her words but still lingered on the first part. He remembered talking to her in the butterfly mansion and how they had opened up to each other. Sadness overcame him, it seemed that you hadn't told him everything about yourself. You were not only scarred mentally from your past, but also physically.
The Arrangement (Rengoku x reader) - Chapter 4
Your and Shinjuro's argument has been interrupted by Senjuro, who has been listening in for an unknown amount of time. How will you and the Rengoku Patriarch react to the boy's interface, and more importantly how will you act around each other going on from here?
"Father... (Y/N), Please stop fighting..." A small voice whispered quietly; one could almost miss it with the wind. Shinjurou's enraged features morphed into a look of suprise, as his attention turned from you to his youngest son. Shame began to weigh heavy on your shoulders, what are you doing? Why were you arguing with your future father-in-law and in front of Senjuro no less? You looked at the boy whose blond head was peeking at you from behind the shoji door meekly. The boy shouldn't have had to hear this...
"Senjuro... I'm sorry. How much did you hear?" You ask gently anger having dissipated at the sight of the boy. Senjuro couldn't help but flinch at the guilt the swam in your eyes. It wasn't his intention to upset you further, he just didn't want you to face his father's unadulterated rage.
"Not much." the boy hesitated clearly lying but no one chose to voice this, opting instead to change the subject.
"Why don't we all head inside?" You only received a grunt of agreement from Shinjurou, who roughly pushed past you into the house. You found yourself having to fight off throwing a violent glare his way, keeping his youngest son's presence in mind.
"(Y/N)-San, are you alright?" You looked at the boy with mild surprise apone realizing he'd stayed with you on the porch instead of following his father inside.
"Yes, yes, I'm alright. I'm sorry you shouldn't have had to hear me and your father fight." You put your hands on his shoulder with a light squeeze, hoping to convey the sincerity behind your words.
You felt that heavy feeling of guilt weight lift off your shoulders when the young boy gave you a small understanding smile, "It's alright (y/n)-San, I forgive you. I understand that Father can be hard to deal with at times. He wasn't always like this.... or at least that's what Aniue says." The boy looked almost unsure of himself as he added that last bit. You were so astounded by the boy's kindness towards you - a stranger, that it took you a moment to gather your thoughts and find your voice.
"Your compassion... I- don't ever lose that, okay? It'll take you far in life." You couldn't help but let out a light-hearted chuckle as the boy blushed and looked away shyly, before quickly nodding, "Let's head inside. We can look through those books for a recipe to make. How does that sound?" You walk towards the door before looking back at Senjuro, who was smiling from ear to ear, "That sounds fantastic!"
-
"Hmmmm, found anything yet, Senjuro?" You glanced at the flaming locked boy curiously. You'd gotten out your recipe book and allowed the boy to flip through it to see if anything caught his eye, but he seemed to be having a hard time choosing as he flipped back and forth throughout the pages with a concentrated look.
"They're so many great options! I'm having a hard time choosing only one." The boy let out a sigh of disappointment as his golden orbs continued to scan the text, and his young mind weighed the pros and cons of each recipe.
"Well, we can always make more later. Why don't we start with something simple?"
"Why don't we make mochi?" Senjuro quickly stood with a smile as he pointed to what you assumed was one of the mochi recipes.
"I like how you think, kid, any particular flavor in mind?" You listen closely and nodded as the boy eagerly explained all the different ideas he had in mind, as you looked through the cabinets.
"Okay, so we'll need to go into town to get the ingredients for that, then?" You ask as you look through the sparse cabinets that seem only to hold rice, flour, and a few condiments. You dead panned how had you not realized how sparse the cabinets were this morning?
"Yes, I haven't had the chance to stop at the market, so we're out of a few things." The boy nodded simply in conformation.
"No worries, let me just go grab my change purse, and we can go." You go to stand before being interrupted by Senjuro who stood Infront of.
"Wait (y/n)! I can wake Father and ask for money, so you don't have to use your money - it'll only take a moment. " The boy waved his hands in front of him quickly.
You couldn't help but be slightly humored by the boys' reaction, "There's no need to wake your father. It was my idea for us to bake something anyway."
Your calm voice helped soothe the young blonds pounding heart before he found himself asking, "Are you sure?"
"Positive, now go get ready!" You shooed the hesitant tween down the hall before heading to clean up the cookbooks that were messily scattered around the sitting area.
You were honestly grateful for the young boys' company. You were unsure of what you would have done if he wasn't here. (Most likely lock yourself away in your room and avoid the Rengoku Patriarch like the plague.)
"(Y/n), I'm ready." The young boys' sudden presences made you flinch. Where you really so wrapped up in your thoughts that you hadn't heard his entrance into the room?
"Oh, I didn't see you there, Senjuro. I'll go get the money then we'll be ready to go."
You went to grab the money needed along with a cloth bag to carry the items you were planning to purchase, "I think that's everything I need." you said to no one in particular as you got yourself situated.
You made your way into the dimly lit corridor before turning around to shut the door behind you, but you pause as the sound of objects falling followed by a string of curses sounded as if it was coming from the room at the end of the hall... Shinjuro's room.
You stood there for a moment, contemplating between going to see if something was wrong, or just leaving and acting as if you heard nothing... You had just gotten into an argument in the man, and he sounded rather angry at the moment. Would he really want you bothering him, but then again, what if he needed help or even someone to talk to? You took a step forward, but a smaller hand grasping your arm stopped you, "Big brother told you not to bother father, right?"
You nodded slowly, not looking in Senjuros' direction and only straight ahead to the man in questions door. The boy then let out a sigh before letting go of your arm, "I know you're just concerned, but Father can have a temper...it's better to leave him be during moments like this..."
Your finally turned and took in the boy's sad smile, "I think I can understand that..."
As senjuro looked into your eyes, he could see the honestly behind your words, the pain that marked your being. He couldn't help but wonder why such a kind person like you held pain? He couldn't find an answer, as much as he wished he could.
It may not have shown in how you carried yourself, but it pained you not to reach out and help the man, just like how you could never help her... 'No, no- God (y/n)! This isn't the time to do this. Why are you thinking about her now?' You shook your head trying to rid your mind of the wretched woman before speaking.' "Let's head out, Senjuro. I have everything we need." You began walking towards the entrance of the flame estate, hoping that by putting distance between you and the Rengoku Patriarch, it'd be easier to get your mind on more pleasant topics.
"I'll need you to lead the way to the market, I'm not familiar with the area yet." You looked to your young companion who agreed.
"Sure, I don't mind at all!" The young boy began to lead the two of you down the large street as you made pleasant conversation.
"The market isn't usually busy at this time, so we should be able to find everything we need without too much of a hassle." You hummed and nodded your head in response as the marketplace came into view.
It was surprisingly large, far larger than the one that belonged to the little town you grew up in. It also appeared to have a large array of products that ranged from food to accessories like jewelry.
"The stand that sells flour is this way." The youngest Rengoku chirped as you both navigated your way through the streets of the square before he suddenly froze in his tracks almost making you bump into him, "Wait, I want to stop here really quick!" Senjuro grabbed your hand and pulled you towards a colorful stand that seemed to sell art supplies.
As you approached the stand with your young companion, you noticed how the older woman who was in charge of the stands face lit up as you neared, "Ah, Rengoku-Kun, is that you!? It's been too long dearly! I've missed my favorite customer! We're about to get that shipment of origami paper in, I know you've been looking forward to it!"
"Ah, Toshi-San, that's good to hear! I'm sorry I haven't been by recently. I've been rather busy lately; I would have come by to see you sooner if I was given the chance!" Said Senjuro, with a very flustered appearance as he shyly rubbed the back of his neck, "This is my friend (L/N)- San, I'm showing her around town. " He cleverly changed the conversation when he noticed the older womans dark orbs appraising you.
"Well, any friend of Rengoku-Kuns is a friend of mine! So, you're new in town, Aye?" A friendly smile spread across her aged face giving her a youthful glow.
"I am. I got here last night." You replied with little expression in your voice, though woman hardly seemed to mind this, if anything it amplified her curiosity.
"Oh, I see! What brings you to our town? Just passing through or settling down to stay?" While you knew the question itself should have been a simple one to answer, the honest answer could have been anything but simple.
"I'm getting married." You tried to keep your responses short, wanting to change the subject as quickly as possible, without seeming rude... you didn't want to think about how you didn't have a choice but to be here, right when you were just starting to feel comfortable.
The woman gasped before clapping her hands together in a silent cheer, "That's wonderful news! You must be so excited! Who's the lucky man, I may know him?"
In that moment, you wanted to take one of the paint knives on her table and ram it into your skull repeatedly at the irony, but refrained from doing so, as you didn't want to traumatize sweet Senjuro who was standing next to you still grasping your callused hand.
It wasn't that you didn't like Rengoku-San. He'd been nothing but kind to you since you'd met, you had no reason to hate him, but you really didn't know what to make of the situation. Only 48 hours ago did you learn you were going to marry him, you had to leave your old life behind, and now you're living with him? It was a lot to take in.
You take a deep breath and kept your expression schooled, knowing the woman in front of you had no way of knowing the complex situation you found yourself in.
"I'm engaged to Senjuro's older brother Kyojuro. He's currently away on important business, which is why Senjuro is showing me around in his stead." You found yourself saying a moment later, your calm and almost detached demeanor greatly contrasting the elder womans kind and open personality.
The woman seemed rather surprised at hearing of your engagement as she let out a small gasp and her eyes widened, "You're marrying Rengoku Kyojuro? I'd never thought I'd see the day where he'd settle down! The ladies will be upset when word gets out that he's no longer available." She off handedly added with a humored chuckle.
'Ladies?' Your mind could help but question before it hit you - of course, he had others interested in courting him, it wasn't as if he were an unattractive by any means, and then you pair that with his polite nature, how hadn't you thought of any of this before now?! Hell, you wouldn't have been surprised if he had someone he was interested in as well. Guilt began to fill you, 'Here I am wrecking everything... He could have been with whoever he wished if it wasn't for you (Y/n).'
"(Y/n), are you alright?" Senjuro's voice thankfully drew you from your unpleasant thoughts.
"Yes, I'm quite all right." You reassured quickly before the art supplies before you caught your attention once more. Toshi-San seemed to have a wide variety of supplies to choose from. Though the pencil set is what caught your attention. The labeling on it seemed to be in an unfamiliar dialect. The green colored tin reminded you of another pencil set you had owned as a girl. It had the same forest green tone and muddy brown labeling.
Your father had ended up saving an artist on one of his missions, and the artist had gifted him a pencil set to show her gratitude. He later gave to you said set because he noticed your interest in the arts, "It's a nice set, from France, I think? It'd be a shame to let it go to waste. I know you'll use it more than me." You remembered him saying when you asked if he was sure he wanted to give it to you, even at a young age you could tell the set wasn't for an amateur.
You were later heartbroken when your mother had taken it away from you after your father vanished, but now, before you, was a near identical set. It felt almost as if the fates had decided to show you some kindness after all.
You found yourself reaching out and flipping the price tag over only to pause once you saw the price. Your father hadn't been joking when he said they were expensive...
"Ah, those are imported from Europe." The lady chirped once she saw you looking at the price.
"Yes, they're from France, right? I think I've seen a similar set before." You let go of the tag as the lady smiled and nodded.
"I believe you're correct. If you want it, it's yours. Consider it a welcoming gift." Your head quickly shot up to look at the woman in disbelief.
"Thank you for the kind offer, but I have to refuse! I'm sure this set cost you a pretty penny. There's no way I could accept such an expensive gift." You wave your hands in front of you in refusal.
"Are you sure dear? It's really not that big of a deal it's used set anyway." You reassured and thanked the older woman for her generosity and ended up buying a medium-sized sketch book.
"Well, it was nice meeting you (L/n)-San. Don't be a stranger now." Toshi-San gave you a kind smile as she handed you your change.
"Same to you. Have a great rest of your day. " You waved before walking off with Senjuro to continue the rest of your shopping.
-
It didn't take you long to gather everything you needed with Senjuros' help.
"Can you think of anything else we need?" You watch as the young boy looks up in thought.
"No, I think we got everything (y/n)!" You hum in reply before spotting a Kakigori stand. Senjuro seemed to follow your line of sight, "Oh, shaved ice! That's one of my favorite treats!" He cheered with enthusiasm practically radiating off of him.
You soon found yourself walking towards the stand, leaving the blond confused.
"Come on, Senny-boy, we're getting shaved ice." You turn around just in time to see the boy's face light up, and while you didn't show it (or so you thought-) you felt yourself starting to grow a soft spot for this young boy. Maybe it was because he was so friendly, or maybe because you saw a small part of yourself in him? You weren't for sure, but you supposed it didn't really matter.
As you ate your shaved ice, your mind drifted to the events that occurred earlier that day. You knew you couldn't avoid the Rengoku Patriarch forever, so the only other option was to apologize to the man, and while the idea of doing such a thing wounded your pride slightly you knew it had to be done.
"How do you like your shaved ice, Sen?" You look at the boys shaved ice, which seemed to already be nearly gone.
"It's really good! You made the right call having us stop here." You couldn't help the small smile that graced your lips, "Well if you'd like another, just let me know."
"Thank you, but I think one will be enough for me. I don't want to spoil my lunch." The boy said politely, as you nodded in agreement and continued to eat your sweet treat in a comfortable silence.
"Hey, (Y/n) can I ask you a question?" Senjuro asks after a few moments of silence.
"Yea, what's up, kid?" You glance at the boy who seems a little unsure of if he should proceed. Thought it seems after a few moments he'd decided to just ask.
"Not to be disrespectful, but why did you buy a sketch book if you don't have anything to draw with?"
You blunck and gave the boy an unreadable deadpan before you looked up in thought, "You know, Senjuro, that's a good question.... I don't know why I bought the book."
Silence hung between the two of you for a few moments before the youngest Rengoku gave you an odd look, "(Y/n) you confuse me..." you continued to stare at eachother for a few moments.
"I confuse me too." Senjuro snorted upon hearing this, and you smiled before playfully ruffling the boy's flame like hair.
"(Y/N), stop! You'll mess up my hair!" The boy wined while trying to swat your hand away. You eventually relented with a small laugh that Senjuro shared, showing you he didn't really mind. As you both took the final few bites of your icy treats, you noticed how more people began to fill the market and agreed to start heading back to the estate before more people filled the square.
The walk back was filled with light-hearted chatter as you discussed your ideas for dinner that night, what Senjuro wanted to do before dinner, and as you neared the house, the conversation topic switched to his elder brother, "Your brother loves sweet potatoes, right? Why don't we make some for him when he gets back?" Senjuro nodded at this before looking up in thought, "He does indeed... You know, before becoming a slayer, Aniue used to make baked sweet potatoes for dinner every night. I don't know how he can love them as much as he does after eating them so often?" You felt your chest tighten at the implications behind that statement that Senjuro himself didn't seem to realize.
'His innocence...'
"You can never eat too many sweet potatoes." You found yourself saying with a small laugh as you opened the shoji door, 'Must be preserved.'
You stepped through the doorway face absent of a smile as you made eye contact with the Rengoku Patriarch who was eyeing your bags.
"You went to the market?" His gruff voice broke through the silence.
"Yes, we left an hour or so ago." You move to the kitchen to put away the groceries you'd purchased without giving the man a second glance.
"Did you get any sake?" Shinjuro asked as he followed behind you into the kitchen.
"No, I didn't realize you wanted me to get any. Say, would you mind helping me put this all away?" The man seemed caught off guard by your request but wordlessly complied none the less.
"What would you like me to do (Y/N)?" The soft voice of the youngest Rengoku had your previously expressionless face shift into one with a soft smile.
"Hmmmmm, why don't you figure out what you want for lunch? You then can tell me, and we'll make it." The boy seemed confused at you not giving him an actual task, but excited as he ran off to look through the cookbooks.
"He behaved well for you?" Shinjuro suddenly asked as you both finished putting away the last of the groceries.
"Yes, he was wonderful, he showed me around town. He's a sweet boy. You should be proud; he'll be a fine man one day." You said with sincerity, as you shut the cabinet.
The man only grunted in response before shutting the doors of the cabinet after placing the last of his items on the top shelf. He went to walk away before something made him pause. You were confused when you saw his eyes narrow on the leather-bound book you'd purchased.
"You draw?" The man said as his unreadable gaze shifted towards you.
You were confused about why he cared, but responded none the less, "Yes, I haven't in a while, but I'm thinking about picking it back up now."
The man only nodded before making his way out of the kitchen, but before he exited, he paused again, and without looking back, he asked, "How about calligraphy?"
"I wanted to, but the amount of ink needed to learn and do it was too expensive for my family to afford." You replied softy, trying to understand the enigma before you. You didn't understand why the man was taking a sudden interest in your hobbies when he'd seemed ready to take your head off earlier, 'Maybe he's trying to be polite after earlier?' If this was the case, you didn't see the harm in humoring his curiosity.
The man stepped into the hallway, but not before letting out a grunt and a short, "I see."
As he walked away, you only had one thought, 'He's truly a confusing person to understand.'
You weren't left alone for long when Senjuro soon stepped into the room with a recipe card in hand, "(Y/n), we should make Nikujaga! What do you think?" (Meat and potato soup) The boy handed you the recipe and awaited your response as you looked over the card carefully.
"Well, we have everything we need, and there's a slight chill in the air, so I don't see why not."
-
You couldn't help the defeated sigh that escaped you as you looked out upon the shadowy terrain of the Rengoku estate. You'd long since finished cooking lunch, and most recently, dinner.
The Patriarch of the Rengoku family hadn't joined you and Senjuro for either meal. You didn't know whether to feel saddened that he wouldn't join his youngest son, or relieved that you didn't have to worry about irritating the short-tempered man further than you already had that day.
You needed time to think things over, which is what led you here, sitting on the Engawa staring into the koi pond with only the sound of crickets and your thoughts keeping you company. 'I still don't understand why I'm here. I know it's to marry Rengoku-San, but why me? There are surly more eligible women that Rengoku-Sama could have chosen for his son.' You didn't understand why Shinjuro wanted you specifically. You had nothing to offer, and he'd never seen you before. He may have been a drunk, but he wasn't stupid; He must have known that any high-class courtesan with training in the arts would have happily married his son, and have had far more to offer, but he chose you- a poor tea house worker with hardly a yen to your name, and no other redeemable qualities? You weren't stupid either. There was something you didn't know, so what was that man hiding, and how were you going to figure it out?
Tumblr media
Kyojuro didn't know why he was here and not back in his room at the inn he had bought for the night sleeping soundly. He had finished this mission rather quickly and was given orders to leave for another mission at first light, but the thought of you, his father, demon slaying, and his future weighed heavy on his shoulders, so he found himself here instead.
Kyojuro's attention was drawn from his thoughts, and the stary reflections that painted the river to the flamboyant sound of laughter coming from his left. Was that who he thought it was?
"Rengoku! How flashy seeing you here, by friend! I'm guessing you had a mission in the area?" The man said with his usual dramatic flair.
Rengoku didn't need to look at the figure to know who that voice belonged to, "Hello Uzui, I wasn't expecting to see you here. Not that I'm complaining, it's always good to be in company of a friend." Rengoku turned to look at said man with his signature smile, which was returned before Tengen invited himself to sit with Rengoku at the river's edge. Rengoku glanced at Tengen noticing the absence of his uniform along with the absence of his wives, "The girls are not with you?"
The question, that was more of a statement was returned with a nod, "They aren't, the last mission was quite taxing, so I asked them to stay home and take it easy while I went to take care of misalliance things." Tengen paused before slapping the flame-haired man on the back, "So are you gonna tell me why there's an unflashy aura surrounding you, or you going to keep asking me about my beautiful wives? I mean, you won't hear me complain if the latter is the route you choose." The taller piller laughed at his own joke, which had Rengoku chuckling, "There we go- so what's up? I don't think I've ever seen you so troubled, it doesn't suit you."
The flame-haired looked ahead for a few moments, trying to formulate his thoughts. "Your marriage to your wives' were arranged, right? How did you feel when you were told to marry them?"
Tengen was a little surprised at the seemingly out of nowhere question, but wanted to see where the Flame Hashira was going with this, "Yes they were, well with Hinatsuru and Makio. Suma approached me first. I was originally meant to marry her sister. I had known Makio and Hinatsuru prior, so I was delighted to be marrying such capable women, and Suma had a unique charm, so I had no complaints there." The man explained before turning slightly, "Why do you ask?"
"I'm getting married. My father arranged it without my knowledge." Kyojuro said flatly, and Tengen hummed in understandment.
"Ah, okay, it makes sense why you're upset. Do you know why he arranged the marriage? It's weird that he would spring it on you just like that."
The Hashira only shook his head, "No, he said to continue the family legacy, but I don't think that's the truth, or at least not the full truth. He's said himself that demon slaying is useless and that there's no point. Why would he out of the blue want me to continue the legacy? Why would he care? None of it adds up Tengen."
The two men then made eye contact and it seemed they came to the same conclusion.
"Your father is definitely hiding something. How are you going to figure out what?"
"Indeed. I can't ask him out right. I think I could try and talk to (Y/N), though I think we're in pretty much the same boat in the knowledge department." The flame haired man looked down at the flowing water of the river below with a shake of his head.
Despite how unsure he felt in that moment, Kyojuro knew talking to you first was the start of solving what was being hidden from him.
Alright, were almost done with the 'Set Up Arc' of the story. Then we'll be getting into the juicy stuff! Just one or two more chapters. Fun fact: Toshi-San was originally going to be a middle-aged, unnamed man with a bar styled mustache who sold potatoes, but I just couldn't get the feel for his character. So, i changed it to an elderly woman who sold art supplies, as it fit better with a small plot point, I have planned in the future. edited: 8/4/23
