How the Pillars react to your death
Important note: all of these deaths occur during the infinity castle arc, heavy and implied spoilers. Rengoku’s reaction to your death takes place before Mugen Train! Reader’s gender is unspecified.
Warnings: this post contains spoilers for the final arc of the manga. This includes implied spoilers for various characters. Please do not read this if you don’t want to be spoiled and don’t blame me if you go ahead and read it anyways lol
A/N: I wrote this whole post in my head while showering last night and I’m honestly offended it took me 3x as long to actually write it.
Tumblr media
Giyu
“CAWWW! DEAD! KOCHO SHINOBU AND L/N Y/N ARE DEAD! THEY DIED AFTER A CONFRONTATION WITH UPPER MOON TWO!” Giyu’s body comes to a screeching halt, Tanjiro shooting past him before falling to his knees as violent sobs wracked his body. Giyu, on the other hand, is frozen in place, a sob stuck in his throat. Shinobu’s death was a punch to the gut, but you? For the first time since Sabito had died, Giyu felt tears burning at the back of his eyes. Yet, nothing would come out, those tears wouldn’t break the barrier and slip down his cheeks. His tight throat would not let the sob escape. There was no possible way you were gone, you promised him you’d be okay. Though, childish beliefs like that reminded him of his own faults. Once again, he couldn’t protect the people he cared about. Rather than wallowing in sudden grief, he began moving again, past Tanjiro who was struggling to get back up. He needed to keep moving, if he didn’t stop, he was certain he would collapse entirely and never get up again. He couldn’t let your sacrifice go to waste.
Tumblr media
Shinobu
Her feet barely hit the ground, body manoeuvring through the endless castle with one destination in mind. “CAWWW! DEAD! L/N Y/N IS DEAD! THEY DIED AFTER ENCOUNTERING UPPER MOON TWO!” She stumbles, shock hitting her like a bucket of ice water being dumped over her head. Her mind is racing, not willing to believe what the crow had just said to be true. You had steered away from the plan. In a desperate attempt to save Shinobu’s life you tried to defeat Upper Two yourself. Hot, angry tears are spilling down her cheeks, hand clutching her heart as she tries to understand. “Why would you do this? Why wouldn’t you take my word for it and go with Tomioka? Look what you did… you went and got yourself killed,” Yet again, Upper Two had taken something precious to her. One word flashed through her mind, alongside your beautiful face. Revenge. She would get her revenge, not only for Kanae, but for you. “Don’t worry, my love. I’ll be with you soon.”
Tumblr media
Rengoku
It’s quiet, too quiet even. You should be back by now, the sun has fully risen. Kyojuro’s heart is hammering in his chest, doom creeping up his spine. He has an unshakable bad feeling about your late arrival. His worst fears are confirmed when your crow arrives without you. “No…” breathless, as if all the air is being ripped from his lungs. “Don’t say it…” his knees are giving out as your crow lands on the wooden porch. “T-they’re gone…aren’t they?” he chokes it out, the words are as bitter and burning as bile. Your crow only caws, soft and full of sorrow, unable to share the proper message as Kyojuro begins to sob. He’s curling in on himself, crying so loudly but unable to hear it due to the intensity of the ringing in his ears. It’s a panic attack manifesting in the most intense form. He can’t fathom a world without you, nevermind having to live in one. Senjuro is rushing to his brother's aid, seeing your crow gives him more than enough information to know as tears well in his eyes.
Tumblr media
Tengen
He’s kneeling dutifully outside of Nezuko’s room, Shinjuro by his side. His wives are inside, too stubborn to sit out and not help at all. Their excuse being that Nezuko saved his life, they owe her the same kind of protection now. You on the other hand, were too determined, leaving your retirement to fight the battle against the demon lord himself. Nothing Tengen nor his wives said could convince you to stay on the sidelines. His heart is sinking the moment your crow appears in the distance, he’d recognize it anywhere. “N-no… don’t you dare…” Tengen’s voice is cracking as it lands, Shinjuro is turning his head the other way, knowing what is to come. “Don’t you dare say they are dead…” his voice is rising in his panic, he knows the answer. The commotion has Makio, Suma and Hinatsuru running outside. The moment Hina’s eyes land on your crow, a violent sob escapes her chest, falling to her knees as Makio and Suma come to the same conclusion. “T-they’re dead…aren’t they?!” Makio sobs, Tengen can’t raise his head as your crow delivers your final message.
Tumblr media
Mitsuri
She’s frozen in place as a crow comes directly for her, fear is ebbing through her body, a cold sweat forming on her brow. She knows the message before the crow can even utter it. “No! Go back! I don’t want to hear it!” Obanai is frozen beside her, grabbing her arm so she doesn’t collapse. The crow circles around her, cawing woefully as she begins to cry. “I-I don’t want to know! Don’t tell me!” she’s hiccupping as Obanai tries to pull her forward, they need to keep moving. “Mitsuri…” his voice is surprisingly soft, the crow is still circling overhead. “We need to hear the message…” she shakes her head, hands coming up to cover her ears as tears slip down her cheeks. The crow caws again, Obanai signals for it to deliver the message. “CAWWW! L/N Y/N IS DEAD! THEY DIED AFTER AN ALTERCATION WITH UPPER MOON ONE!” The crow continued on about who lived and who died, what was important is that upper moon one was dead. That didn’t matter to her though, no she couldn’t even hear the rest of the message over the ringing in her years. Mitsuri let Obanai tug her along, they needed to keep moving at whatever the cost.
Tumblr media
Muichiro
“CAWWW! L/N Y/N IS DEAD!” He keeps running, uncertain as to why he feels a tightness in his chest at the crow’s message. “THEY DIED DURING A CONFLICT WITH UPPER TWO!” He’s still moving, more so concerned over his unexpected and overwhelming sadness. Why am I sad? I don’t even remember that name… but then your kind smile is flashing before his eyes and the world is crashing down around him. He comes to a screeching halt, eyes wide as he finally pieces together the message. “y/n…” how could he ever forget? Before he realizes it, he’s sniffling. Tears blur his vision for a moment before he blinks them away. He begins to move again, the sadness gripping his chest is slowly fading, fading until he can’t even remember why he got teary eyed in the first place. He needs to remember the task at hand… where was he heading again?
Tumblr media
Obanai
The flapping of wings catches him off guard, head craning upwards as the crow begins to caw. The noise is full of sorrow, which can only mean it bears bad news. “Obanai…” Mitsuri is watching the animal circle above them, her heart pounding erratically at the endless possibilities of the message it may share. “CAWWW! L/N Y/N IS DEAD! THEY DIED IN BATTLE AGAINST UPPER MOON ONE!” Obanai’s feet are slowing, hitting the floor beneath him with a little too much force as the message rings through his head over and over. “N-no… oh… Iguro I…” Mitsuri is crying, staring at the man beside her as the world seems to cave in on him. It’s as if everything is in slow motion for a few beats in time. The words the crow uttered felt foreign, your name paired with ‘dead’ didn’t make any sense in his mind. It was impossible really, there was no way you were dead. You had gone to face Upper One with Gyomei, Sanemi, Muichiro… four hashira against upper One and you didn’t make it? You were so strong… no the message can’t be correct. “Kanroji… let’s keep moving.” he’s turning it off, every swelling emotion is being suppressed as he takes off again. Mitsuri is left with no choice but to wipe her tears and follow.
Tumblr media
Sanemi
Upper Moon One is standing before him, Gyomei at his side. This battle needed to be won, if not, everything would be lost. The demon before him needed to be put down, there was no other option. He’s talking, but he couldn’t be bothered to listen. Rather, Sanemi is gauging every vital point he can strike and how to go about doing it. “CAWW! I BRING A MESSAGE!” he doesn’t glace up, nothing that crow could say would be able to break his focus. “L/N Y/N IS DEAD!” except for that. Sanemi inhales deeply, eyes widening significantly as he debates on if he heard the message correctly. “THEY DIED DURING AN ALTERCATION WITH UPPER MOON TWO! UPPER MOON TWO IS NOW DEAD!” it feels as if all the air in the room had been sucked away with the crow’s flapping wings. Upper One no longer seemed smug about the message after the addition of Upper Two being defeated. Beside him, Gyomei is crying. Sanemi doesn’t realize it, but so is he. He’s oblivious to the hot, angry tears rolling down his cheeks. Still, his patience remains intact, waiting for Gyomei’s signal to attack the high ranked demon. Now, he has absolutely nothing to lose. Kagaya is gone, now you are gone, it is likely the rest of the Hashira wouldn’t make it out of this… he has nothing left to fight for.
Tumblr media
Gyomei “CAWWW! L/N Y/N IS DEAD! THEY DIED AFTER ENCOUNTERING MUZAN!” Tears flow freely as he fights, part of him wishes he hadn’t been able to hear the message in the first place. You had met the unfortunate fate of encountering Muzan himself. It was likely that you were alone, if you weren’t, you were likely the strongest in your group. It pained him, knowing you likely died a brutal death. That pain fueled his attacks, taking every ounce of heartbreak and despair out on the demon before him. You didn’t deserve that, nobody deserved a fate that cruel. He keeps moving, mind reeling yet completely focused. It’s as if he is fighting in a bubble, the world muffled around him yet perfectly clear all at once. Too many emotions are raging through his soul to really pinpoint just one of them. He can only hope you’ll wait for him on the other side, he can only pray you’re watching over him at this very moment. Guiding him, giving him strength. “I’ll meet you again soon, don’t worry. I promise I won’t keep you waiting much longer. Wait for me, please? You will, won’t you?”

The Bitter & the Sweet — teaser | Kyojuro x F!Ice Hashira
Bundle of Joy (secret pregnancy fic)
Tumblr media
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
I meant what I said — in general, no more teasers.
However, this one has been a long time coming, and frankly, I’m interested to see what the reaction will be (if any) to Flame Boy’s Bundle of Joy.
Set post-Mugen with flashbacks. This teaser is from Shinobu’s POV. Y/N is around three months pregnant when Kyojuro is killed, though no one knew he was the father.
Song rec here.
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Hours later, Shinobu sat in her office, pouring over the early results from Y/L/N’s bloodwork. Her eyes strained to their limit to see if she could catch any sign, no matter how infinitesimal, of what could have caused the young woman’s chest pains.
Shinobu ground the charcoal stick between her fingers in agitation, her brown pinched as she scoured her brain for the possible causes. She had ruled out any physical ailment, she was certain. Y/L/N did not suffer from attacks brought about by nerves, and it was still early enough in her pregnancy that her hormones should still have been relatively stable.
Shinobu thought back to the Ice Pillar’s episode, the way that she had sobbed while hyperventilating, clutching madly at her chest, as if she were trying to hold herself together, as though her heart was falling apart.
Shinobu let out a little grunt of frustration. Just what had happened? Y/L/N’s screams, her tears, her broken utterance about something hurting, none of it pointed to any known injury or illness that the Insect Pillar had ever seen or studied.
It was almost as if it were a reaction — a deep, physical reaction to something else, something not from within, but from the outside-
Kyojuro Rengoku is dead.
Shinobu’s charcoal clattered to the floor, icy sweat breaking out across her forehead as the crow’s words echoed in her mind.
Kyojuro Rengoku is dead.
Dead. Dead. Dead.
Some said that when a loved one died, one’s heart felt as though it was quite literally broken.
Had Shinobu not experienced it herself first hand, she would have said such notions were ridiculous. She’d have scoffed at the idea that emotional injury could ever make a tangible, physical impact on the human body. Physical pain was caused by something real, not something as romantic as a broken heart.
Except, the day the Insect Pillar watched as her sister collapsed in her arms, fatally wounded, Shinobu had been convinced someone had punched through her chest to wrap a fist around her heart, to crush it until it was nothing but dust.
The pain had been unbearable; it had not subsided even hours after Lady Amane had pulled the sheet over her sister’s cold, lifeless face.
Kyojuro Rengoku is dead.
When she’d first informed Y/L/N that she was pregnant, the Ice Hashira had refused to say who fathered the child. But her refusal had not been out of shame or regret or fear — she had smiled, gentle and soft, as her hand caressed her stomach.
Shinobu shot backwards out of her stool, nearly toppling it over as her mind pieced together the dreadful puzzle.
Y/L/N had not suffered from any physical malady. She had suffered from something far worse.
Kyojuro Rengoku is dead.
A horrified, choked gasp squeaked its way out of Shinobu’s chest as her hand raised to clap over her mouth, her stomach clenched and roiling while nausea crept up the back of her throat.
Kyojuro Rengoku was the father of Y/N Y/L/N’s child.
But Kyojuro Rengoku was now dead.

How would kny characters hurt you in an argument?
Tumblr media
Includes: Tanjiro Kamado, Kyojuro Rengoku, Giyuu Tomioka, Sanemi Shinazugawa
A/N: Hello readers! This is an idea I got from a hc post on here, I'm not sure who made it but I give credit to them for this hc idea. Anyways, I hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
KAMADO TANJIRO:
I feel like most arguments would start becaude of Tanjiro's protectiveness of his friends
He would probably start scolding you for doing something he thought was reckless while fighting a demon
Especially if Nezuko we're to be the one to save you and get injured, he would probably be pissed off
Tanjiro is the type of person to bottle his emotions up, so he really just snapped at you
He seems like the person who yells and cries during an argument
He would bring up the fact that you had jumped into danger without thinking, calling you selfish for thinking only about the battle and not of your friends
If someone had gotten injured protecting you, like Nezuko, she wouldn't be able to say anything since she was healing and unable to stick up for you
You would just be too shocked to even say anything to defend yourself, along with everyone else, since no one has seen Tanjiro like this before
Once he finishes, he simply excuses himself quietly, saying that he's tired from dealing with this
Bonus!
Zenitsu would immediately rush to your side to comfort you as tears spilled down your cheeks
This would be especially hard if you had past problems with arguments and yelling
RENGOKU KYOJURO:
Now Rengoku seems like a type of person to be less of a yelling type at the beginning, but slowly builds up his anger to the point that he starts yelling
Usually the arguments are about how Shinjuro treats Rengoku and Senjuro, with Rengoku insisting that he can convince his father to be better
You try to tell him that Rengoku should ask for help to deal with his father, but Rengoku stubbornly disagrees
His demeanor during arguments is different, his eyes looking darker and it seems like he loses his friendly glow
When Rengoku argues back, he usually uses something your sensitive about, like if you had a bad relationship with your parents
He would claims that he's at least trying to fix his relationship with his dad, hitting you hard and causing you to go speechless
rengoku usually just stomps away from the fight when he's done saying his mind, leaving you teary eyes and with a broken heart
TOMIOKA GIYUU:
Giyuu always wants to avoid arguing as much as possible, always shutting you down when you want to talk about some problems
This causes you to get frustrated and start bombarding him with questions, like why is he avoiding their problems
Giyuu seems like the type of person to talk more than yell, but his voice is still strained as if he's holding back from yelling at you
Giyuu knows exactly where to hit you to make it hurt, taunting you about problems that you could never solve
His words would go to the point that he makes you burst out crying and run out of the room
He immediately regrets whatever he said in the argument, and ends up going to bed alone, covering himself in the sheets as tears of regret slide down his face
Bonus!
Giyuu wouldn't be able to face you for a few days after the a t in fear of hurting you again with his words
It takes a lot of reassurance from you to get him outside again
SHINAZUGAWA SANEMI:
Sanemi is the type of dude yo go all out during arguments, yelling and screaming at you, even sometimes going as far as you throw things into the ground in rage
You both seem like you're at each other's necks, not backing down from proving your side right
Sanemi seems like the type of person to call you degrading names, such as coward, selfish, etc.
You try to stay calm at first, but you have yo resort to yelling to get your point across
Sanemi is usually arguing to you about staying out of his and Genya's relationship, saying that it is non of your business
You end up running out of breath before he does, simply listening to him yell at you for a few more minutes before he storms out the room and slams the door
By the time he's gone, tears are already streaming down your face, breathless and tired from screaming your lungs out as you collapse to your knees, sobbing

𝐈 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐌𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬
— Kyojuro Rengoku x Oiran!Reader
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS : Falling in love is a sin that you didn't want to commit but when he is Kyojuro Rengoku, what can you do?
WARNINGS : Historical au, prostitution, Tengen is not married, mention of sex, cursing, open ending, a little angst, 0.6k words.
LOTUS'S NOTE : I was reading a lot of Rengoku smut today and just couldn't stop myself but write this fic. The fic title is from the song 'Seven' by Jeon Jungkook. I'm so bad at writing notes. Reposting this for the seventeenth time and I am not exaggerating (٥↼_↼).
𝐍𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐆𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 // 𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐑 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐓
Tumblr media
Falling in love was the worst sin you could have committed. Oirans were not allowed to fall in love, in fact they were not allowed to have any kind of feelings. They sell their body and that's their business. Having any kind of emotions other than hunger for money is an inconvenience. But you dared to commit the painful crime. You fell in love, that too with a customer and how could you not?
Between the mass of beautiful women and men, your eyes fell on a pair of blazing ones. He was easy to spot. Where everyone else was having fun, choosing who to disappear with, he looked like a lost soul there. Anyone who takes a look at him could tell that it was his first time and had no prior experience.
However the tall, white haired man beside him seemed to be a pro. How he talked to everyone, his attitude, his confidence was enough proof. The blazing eyes, as if feeling your stare, turned in your direction and fell on your sitting form. The eye contact raised a different kind of emotion in your heart. What is this feeling?
The man beside him followed his eyes' direction and saw you. With an encouraging and proud grin, the white haired man nudged him your way. And that's how it all started. "Kyojuro Rengoku" that's what he introduced himself as, with a smile that can give a competition to the sun.
As the night went deep, you escorted the man to your personal bedroom. Not to be cliche but he was different from the other men you had entertained before. One after another article of clothing came off, exposing yourself to each other.
Even if all you did was, as usual, have sex, his touch didn't make you feel dirty. He looked at you like you were the most beautiful woman to ever exist. His warm and rough hand traced every line on your body with passion while yours marked his back with scratches. His lips colour you in the most alluring colour. In the end you were so dazed that at the end you fell into slumber without any fight.
The next morning you woke up with a clean body, instead of the usual sticky one, tucked safely under the warm duvet. A note filled out with neat cursive words spelling the most beautiful words anyone had ever said. At the end he wrote, 'See you soon, till the goodbye.' beside it was a cartoon-ish drawing of a crow.
You burst out in laughter. Who writes this kind of things to an oiran? He said see you soon. Does that mean he will come again?
From that morning all you could think about was Rengoku. From the loud cheers of children outside to the orange hue of sunset, everything reminded you of him. You had entertained many customers after that day but everytime you unconsciously tried to find the Hashira in them.
He returned two weeks later, this time without that tall friend. The events repeated again. You escorted him to your room, helped each other out of the clothes and got lost in each other. This time, unlike the previous one, you were desperate to feel him against you, for him to make you feel like you are not worthless.
These events repeated again and again, and each time you were more eager to see the flame hashira. His visits were not constant. Sometimes he would come twice a week and sometimes he would disappear for months. Nights that you spent fucking turned into sharing about your days and passionate love making.
Even before you knew it you were in love. In love with the flame hashira. But it was not a luxury that you could afford. You were an oiran, a sex worker, a whore and on the other hand he was a well respected and well loved hashira, everyone's hero.

nights with rengoku where you both walk barefoot in the garden, he picks wildflowers and braids then into your hair
nights with rengoku where you watch a fire burn, the sounds of cicadas and the smell of smoke lulls you both to sleep
nights with rengoku when you want nothing to be close to him, he had taken longer than normal to come back to you and you were scared that he wouldn’t return
nights with rengoku where he wraps his arms around your waist, slowly swaying to music that only you two can hear
nights with rengoku where he holds your hands softly; he cradles your face in his palm as he speeds up, you feeling warm as he finishes inside
nights with rengoku where you can feel his heartbeat, it’s strong, steady, you can’t remember where you are but you know if you’re with him you’re safe
nights with rengoku when you’re sent out on missions together, people watching and silently rating everyone’s outfits as you sip on some tea
nights with rengoku where he introduces you as his spouse, and the three boys take turns touching the bump that’s beginning to form in your stomach
nights with rengoku as you fight side by side under the moonlight, you both move in sync to fight the demon in front of you
the last night with rengoku, you watch as akazas hand goes through his heart, you scream
the last night with rengoku, you hold him close as tears began to flow down your cheeks
your last night with rengoku, he brings his hand back up to your face, cradling it as he smiles and says “goodbye”

You set my heart, Ablaze (Kyojuro X Tsuguko reader)
Requested by: Becauseus. You and your master had always enjoyed training together, but as time went on, it became harder and harder to keep you cool. He was just too kind and attractive! So you began to distance yourself from the man, much to his confusion, but he could never know about your feelings. So you enlist the help of the sound Hashira to train you, this ends up backfiring, or dose it?
Warnings: miscommunications between (y/n) and Kyojuro. Tengen is a bit of a flirt, but nothing inappropriate.
You and Rengoku had met during one of his earliest missions as Hashira. Slayers had been vanishing after investigating the disappearances of wealthy estate owners in a small village located in the northern part of his district. Ubuyashiki had asked Rengoku to join the most recent group of low ranks sent to investigate in the hope that the presence of a hashira could lure out the elusive demon that had been plaguing the town for weeks.
Unfortunately, by the time Kyojuro had arrived at the village, the entire group of slayers had been ruthlessly slaughtered and messly scattered about the scene. Kyojuro felt his stomach turn in disgust. It was clear the demon was committing monstrosities for sport.
As Kyojuro looked over the bodies, he noticed that something was off. They usually send scouting parties of five, and there were only four bodies, torn to shreds, but still 4 none the less. Had the demon dragged off one of the slayers and devoured them? No, it wouldn't make sense why the demon would leave the rest and only take one? Kyojuros' contemplation was broken as he realized he heard something faint, it sounded as if a struggle was occurring in the clearing ahead.
As Kyojuro weaved through the thick brush of the woods , the sound of growling and a sword breaking wind grew more and more prominent. He silently cursed himself for not hearing the clashing sooner.
As he ran into the clearing Kyojuro could see you were the only Slayer left standing, there were bones scattered about the landscape that he couldn't help but note looked suspiciously human... The scene would have had any lower rank demon slayer quivering in fear, itching to turn around and run with their tail between their legs; but to a seasoned slayer and now Hashira like him it wasn't the first time he'd witnessed such a catastrophe. It was only something that would make it harder to sleep some nights and aid in his drive to protect the innocent in hopes to prevent such a scene from occurring again.
The thing that did surprise Kyojuro was seeing a lower ranked slayer such as yourself putting up such a brazen fight despite the pain you must have been in from your wounds; Your skill was clear, but you were growing tired with each strike you received. He knew if he didn't interfere soon, you would surely perish as did the others before you. So without a moment's hesitation he leapt into action, catching the offending demon off guard.
With the distraction his sudden entranced caused you were able to find an opening to quickly decapitate the demon, and as you stood there looking at the demon who was responsible for taking the lives of your friends, and countless others you felt the adrenaline coursing through your veins begin to wear off, and a throbbing pain began to spread across your body like wildfire, and as your limbs grew heavy and you lost grip of your sword.
Kyojuro's eyes followed the weapon as it clattered to the ground, and it was as if the world stopped for a moment- the sword was turning from its original flat silver to a striking red.
"Your sword-" Kyojuro began before pausing, noticing the fatigue and grief in your eyes. He knew now wasn't the time for celebration.
"It doesn't matter, I failed in the end. I didn't save them." Kyojuro took a step forward without second thought, and protested your claim.
"I have to disagree. If you hadn't defeated the demon, more slayers along with civilians would have surely met their ends. The demon was misclassified from the start, and what occurred because of that was not your fault! You had no clue what you were up against until it was too late to turn back. I'm sure your fallen comrades would agree that you had not abandoned them by fighting on and surviving." There was no hint of deceit in his voice. You were taken aback by the conviction and confidence he heald.
You looked from the decentagrated demon up to the stary night sky. It had no right to look as calm and unbothered as it did - as if it hadn't also witnessed the grotesque scean before you.
"Then tell me why I feel so usless right now, so weak? Innocent people die because of these monsters!" Flashes of your friends standing around the fire as you sung out key ballets that told outlandish stories of brave warriors and monsters, roasting smores and suspicious looking meat over the bright flames, and your throat constricted as you spoke, "Tell me why I couldn't do more? I became a slayer to save those who couldn't save themselves...and I failed- I failed miserably, and there's nothing I can do....It's like as soon as I make some sort of progress, something is pushing me back. How can I get anywhere if I'm this weak? I'm pathetic, and a waste of a slayer!"
Kyojuro didn't speak at that moment. He only listened as you cried, and he tried to figure out what to do at that moment, "Be my Tsugo, let's cultivate your skills together. You might feel useless now, but I know otherwise. No slayer with zero potential would be standing before me, still alive and breathing. I've only known you for a short time, but I know with the burning fire you have within you, you can achieve great things, young Mizunoe."
His words made you pause and look away from the spot the demon had been, "You want to train me?"
"Yes!" The Hashira's eye contact was unwaveringly as he nodded firmly.
That was well over a year ago, and here you were, blade in hand, sweating your ass off, and cursing yourself for losing your concentration once again. This was the fourth time you barely evaded being hit by the bokken your sensei was passionately wielding with an unmovable smile, almost as if he was enjoying your suffering. Despite now being a kinoto and usually being able to keep up with your master, you had to be off your game today, which didn't seem to go unnoticed by your young master, "Let's take a break, and enjoy some of the delicious food Senjouro packed for us!"
You couldn't help but sigh before nodding in agreement. There was no doubt in your mind that you were only taking a break due to your poor performance. Embarrassment swelled with in you and your face began to heat up.
As you ate in silence and your cheeks had returned to normal you were praying to all the gods you could think off that he wouldn't bring up how poorly you had been evading his attacks, but it seems the gods didn't hear your ple, or maybe they had and just wanted to watch you suffer.
"(Y/N), pardon me if this isn't my place, but you aren't performing at the same caliber you normally do. Is there something on your mind?" Rengoku had stopped eating, and painted on his face was a serious expression. You couldn't help the way your head swung around at that question. The truth was there was, in fact, something on your mind, something he as your master could never know.
"(Y/N), are you alright? We don't have to talk about it if it makes you uncomfortable, but know I'm always here if you need me." His serious tone drew you out of your thoughts, and you blush as you realize you had been gawking at his undeniably handsome features, framed by his equally beautiful and fiery locks.
"Don't worry Master, I'm alright." You lied with a small smile, hoping he wouldn't bat an eye at your bluff. The truth was you weren't alright. You were falling for your Master, and while the age difference wasn't all that extreme, only three years, the idea of a master and Tsuguko being involved with one another was unheard of, if not Taboo. You knew you had to get over this silly crush for both your and Rengokus sake.
So you begain to distance yourself from your master, much to his confusion.
First, you started by cutting lessons short, giving a different excuse each time as to why you had to leave.
"I forgot to give my cat food this morning, so I should really head back now."
"But (y/n), you're allergic to....." He stops as he realizes you had already walked away. His heart grew heavy at the lie you told. He began to wonder how best to approach the situation. You weren't usually one to slack off, so he knew something was wrong.
"(Y/n), if there is something bothering you, I'm willing to listen." Kyojuro said, looking up from his food to you, watching how you froze at the question.
"There's nothing wrong at all." You quickly respond before stuffing your face with more food, wanting to avoid further discussion. Kyojuro let's out a defeated sigh before looking back at his food, suddenly not feeling hungry despite the grumbling of his stomach. He decided he'd bring it up again later.
After trying to talk to you about what was bothering you and failing multiple times he finally decided enough was enough when you failed to show up to practice one day.
He was normally a patient man, but his anxiety filled thoughts were starting to get the best of him. Had he done something wrong? Had he overstepped your boundaries by asking you if you were alright? He only did that because he cared. Why won't you just tell him what he did wrong so he can fix it? He intended to find you and ask you outright, having grown impatient at the thought of waiting for you to reject him as your master... and friend.
"So (y/n), you decided to take me up on my offer?" You glared at Tengen, who's ego had seemed to double as you led him behind your house. You honestly were beginning to regret asking him to train you for the time being.
"Say, isn't Rengoku the one who usually trains you? Why aren't you training with him? I mean not that I'm complaining that I get to spend the afternoon with a beautiful girl such as yourself." You resisted the urge to rule your eyes as you fought off a blush at the mans flirting; more out of embarrassment than anything else.
"If I knew you were going to talk the whole time and not train me, I would have asked Mitsuri instead." You grumbled before getting in position to spar with the man.
"You wound me (Y/n), but you're right. We didn't come here to talk. We can do that after, hopefully over some sake and dinner." The man winked at you and then got into a ready position as well.
Fighting Tengen was interestingto say the least. While it was good in the sense that it was far easier to keep a level head and not turn into a blushing fumbling mess every time you made any sort of contact, compared to with Rengoku who you couldn't help but make a fool of yourself in front of.
You knew that Tengen was a flirt, so you paid little attention to his flatery remarks, mind focusing solely on training and pushing your fiery locked master to the back of your mind.
"So (Y/n), how would you feel about becoming my fourth wife?" Tengen suddenly asks mid fight, completely catching you off guard, giving him the perfect opening to attack and subdue you.
"Damnit, Uzui! Let me go, that was so uncalled for! Who asks questions like that in a spar?" You try to wiggle out of the Hashiras firm grasp, failing miserably. In your struggle, you hadn't noticed the presence that had joined you in the court yard.
As Rengoku watched you spar against his friend and fellow pillar, he could help the frown that crept onto his face.
So this is why you had stopped training with him? He felt his heart grow heavy at how you'd found a new master and didn't think to even tell him why. In that moment, he also felt something else that he couldn't quite pinpoint boil with in him as he saw Tengen say something that flusterd you. Kyojuro's fist trembled in rage. Who did Tengen think he was? He already had three wives, and he still felt the need to take the one woman Kyojuro had ever loved. Kyojuro's eyes widened at this realization. He loved you... he let out a heavy sigh, shoulders slightly dropping in defeat, "What am I doing? She's happy and he's my best friend, I can't be selfish...Who am i to get in the way?"
Kyojuro turned around and walked down the path he'd taken to your pausing and looking back the way he came. Maybe he should talk to Uzui?
"Well (y/n), I think it's time we part ways. I understand what Rengoku sees in you. I'm sure you'll make a flashy Hashira when the time comes. Oh, and if you don't end up with Rengoku, my offer still stands." The Hashira winks while getting ready to head out.
"What do you mean 'get with Rengoku' i never - when did i ever -" you stammered once again, caught off guard by the flashy Hashira who was already walking away, paying your question no mind. 'What the hell???'
As Tengen made his way down the scenic path, he couldn't help the laughter that escaped him once he saw Rengoku in the center of the path with his arms crossed in front of his chest, clearly waiting on him.
"Ah, Rengoku! I thought I heard you enter the garden! It's good to see my you! You should have joined (L/n) and I during training! You've trained her well, I think she could fairly well be a pillar in the near future." Tengen stopped in front of his fellow Hashiras as he spoke. Acting oblivious to the clear distain in the other mans gaze.
"It looked like you had the situation handled." The unusually short response from Rengoku caused Tengen to quirk a brow before an even bigger grin broke across his face, "Rengoku.... are you jealous?"
Rengoku only ignored the question, deciding to respond with one of his own, "What are your intentions with (Y/n)?"
"You are jealous! I was only helping her train. I won't lie and say she doesn't interest me slightly. She's an incredible woman, but i don't believe her interest lies with me." Tengen couldn't help but be amused by his friends perplexed look.
"I- what are you trying to say, Uzui?" Rengoku asks after a moment of hesitation, not understanding where this was going.
"What I'm saying is you should talk to her." Tengen pats his firey allies' shoulder, before brushing past him and continueing his way down the dirt trail.
Kyojuro didn't say anything as he watched his friend continue down the trail, feeling more confused than he had before their chat.
After weighing the pros and cons of following the sound Hashiras advice, he began to make his way towards your home, ignoring the erratic thumbing in his chest. Tengen was a lot of things, but Kyojuro knew he would never purposely mislead him.
As he approached your garden, he decided it was best to stop and try to figure out what he was going to say before approaching you, but his plan was soon foiled as you rounded the corner and barreled right into his chest. Why was nothing going right today? (Mwaahaha because i like making you suffer)
"I-uh,Rengoku! What can i do for you?" You stamer before you lept back, almost as if you were scalded by boiling water.
"You missed training." His voice was void of humor. It honstly seemed almost mornful.
"I did..." You knew there was no way of lying your way out of this, and honestly, you were tired of lying to your master and friend, so you told the truth.
"You were training with Uzui, do you want him to be your new master, or is there....more going on there?" You'd never seen your master so unsure of himself, but here he was voice wavering.
"It's more complicated than that, Kyojuro...I don't have a choice." Neither of you noticed your little slip up in the midst of you heightened emotions. "It shouldn't be, there's no inbetween (Y/n). You deserve someone who will love you unapologetically and wholeheartedly." Kyojuros' hand, which had somehow found its way onto your arm, lightly tightened to convey his sincerity. You then realized in that moment you both were talking about two very different things.
"Wait-wait- no, no, you misunderstand! There's absolutely nothing going on between me and Mr.Uzui." While Tengen was a good friend, you couldn't help but grimace at the thought of being his wife and having to spend the rest of your life with the flirty egotistical man bothering you constantly. He may have been pretty, but not that pretty.
Shaking yourself from your thoughts, you couldn't help but note the look of relief on Rengoku's face. "That's a relief. I thought I was going to have to watch you marry Tengen." Your brows furrowed in confusion, "Would that have been a bad thing if i didn't?"
Rengokus hand slid down your arm before finally landing on your callused but soft hand, "I suppose there's no use in hiding from you... It would have been horrible if you and Tengen had gotten together because I would have to watch him live out the life with you that I could only dream of having."
"Rengoku, are you saying you -" The anamored look in the Hasias eyes stopped you in your tracks, and a grin breaks across your face, and you knew you already had your answer.
"Yes, I love you (Y/N), I want to be yours if you'll take me." His large hand seemed to engulf yours as he brought it to rest over his rapidly beating heart.
"I've felt the same for a long time, but Kyojuro I'm your Tsuguko, what will people say when they see that we're more than master and student? I don't want to sully your good name." You try to pull your hand away from the man, only for his grip to only tighten, keeping your hand firmly in place above his passionately beating heart.
"I don't care about what anyone might say about us. We know the truth! Spending a life without you by my side seems far crueler than any dirty look I may receive from a faceless stranger." He firmly refuted with unwavering confidence. In that moment, you felt your resolve begin to start to chip away, and the unwavering passion in his eyes did little to help.
"Okay, if you're willing to be with me despite the challenges that may come our way, I'd be honored to be yours." You tried to steady your rapidly beating heart as you both grew closer together, cheast brushing against each other as your breaths mingled.
"You don't know how happy that makes me dear." Kyojuro finally closed the space in between you, and as your lips caressed his. You couldn't help but feel at ease for the first time in months. Kyojuro was yours and you his, and while you knew there would be consiquentense for being together you couldn't bring yourself to care, in that moment it was only the both of you basking in eachothers presence, as it should have been.
And as you separated and looked into his vibrant orbs, you found yourself saying with a battered breath, "Kyojuro, every time I see you, you set my heart ablaze."
He only smiled and pulled you closer to him and kissed your forehead, "I don't think I could describe the passion I feel with you any better myself."
I hope you all enjoyed it! I'm sorry it took me so long to get this out, I had it completed, but I couldn't find the time to edit it as my phone broke, and I didn't have access to a computer, but now we're back on track!

Approval? Not a Chance
Hey y'all! This is one (3/5) of my submissions for @renhoeku's Rengoku Birthday Month Collab. If you wish to join, then please check out their post regarding the collab! This fic was somewhat inspired by THG:Catching Fire. I wanted to write about Kyojuro from a slightly outside perspective using reader and Shinjuro.
Things to know: angst to comfort, established relationship, platonic!Shinjuro

Kyojuro anxiously fidgeted with the hair tie in his battle worn hands, his worry filled gaze looking in the mirror. Today was a very special day, an extremely special day. Today was the day that Kyojuro Rengoku, your loving and wonderful boyfriend, would finally introduce you to his family.
Finally putting his hair into a neat ponytail after three failed attempts, your boyfriend sighed softly; wondering how the day would go. He knew that Senjuro would love you, he’d always ask about you in his letters while Kyojuro was away or pester him when he was home. Senjuro was fine. The issue resided in his father. He had brought you up only three times to his father in the past; the first time was to ask for advice on how to ask you out which didn’t turn out too well. All his father said before turning his back to him was a simple yet stern, “My advice? Save her the trouble of dealing with you.”
The second time was when he informed his father about his successful mission in calling you his girl. The Rengoku senior’s response? “She must be stupid.” It took a bit of willpower and strength for Kyojuro to stop his hand from connecting with his father’s face. The third and final time? Just yesterday when he told him about you coming over to meet. As per usual, his father’s response was nothing but negativity. “Don’t embarrass her, Kyojuro.”
Whatever that meant.
With that thought, Kyojuro huffed in slight annoyance as he smoothed out his hakama. He didn’t expect his father to be the cheerful and passionate man he once was, he didn’t expect him to converse with you as if you were his very own daughter. All he wanted, truthfully and realistically, was for his father to say a short greeting and go back to his room. “It’ll be fine. She’ll be fine. I’ll be fine, we’ll be fine.” Kyojuro muttered softly as he watched his eyebrows relax in his reflection, thinking back to when you told him that his eyebrows were one of your favorite things about his body.
A soft knock resounded on his door, the even softer voice of his brother followed. “Anuie, um, are you ready?” Dear, Kami-Sama. This was the fifth time today that Senjuro had asked him if he was ready, the first time waking him up from his sleep. Kyojuro beamed as he opened the door, incandescent eyes drinking in his brother’s contained excitement that filled his face. He loved his brother, and he absolutely loved how much he loved you. Even though Senjuro only knew you from his letters, it was obvious just how much you meant to his little brother. Senjuro would often dream of you, hugging him and brushing his hair; all the motherly things he didn’t get to experience.
“Now,” Patting Senjuro’s head, he walked past his brother and closed the door, “I’m ready.” A giant smile instantly grew on Senjuro’s face as he followed his older brother to the front gate, happiness radiating off of his small frame. As Kyojuro fixed the zori on his feet, Senjuro gave him a small blue box; golden koi fish and cranes decorated it.
“This is for her, Anuie. Make sure to not eat it before you get there.” Senjuro warned, evoking a hearty laugh from his Anuie. Senjuro didn’t understand what was so funny. He was finally gonna meet you and he wanted to make a good first impression but his brother thought this was a laughing matter!
“I feel like you’re more excited today than me, Senjuro. If I wasn’t so wise I’d even say you’d wanna date her!” Seeing Senjuro’s face dawn a bright red shade, Kyojuro folded his arms in amusement and understanding. “Don’t worry, she already thinks highly of you. And I’ll make sure to not eat your gift. I promise.”
Senjuro simply nodded before shooing his brother onto the street. “J-Just hurry up, I still have a lot to do in the kitchen.” And with his brother’s final words, Kyojuro embarked on his journey to your house, heart fluttering with both excitement and worry with each step.
Shutting the door behind his brother, Senjuro released a small sigh, anxiety running through his veins. He truly wanted today to go well, he didn’t want you to run off at the sight of their broken family. Turning around, Senjuro jumped in surprise as he saw his father lean against the wall, sharp eyes gazing at the door. “Father, you startled me, I didn’t expect you to be there.”
“She should just dump him.” He said gruffly, crossing his arms. Senjuro blinked, taken aback by his father’s words.
“What- do you mean, Father?” He inquired, nervous hands gripping his hakama. Shinjuro grunted before walking off.
“She’d be better off if she stopped wasting her time with him. All he’ll do is bring her down.” Was all he said to a shocked and albeit hurt, Senjuro. He knew about the opinions his father held against his sons and was familiar with them every time he went on a drunken spiel, but to hear him say that regarding his older brother’s lover was something he didn’t expect. Sighing and walking towards the kitchen, Senjuro just hoped his father was wrong and that things would work out.

Kyojuro  released a soft chuckle at the scene that unfolded before him. Next to him on the edge of the engawa, you looked at Senjuro with so much patience and care as he stuttered in trying to converse with you. His face was beet red as he tried to share with you his hobbies, the boy’s eyes looking anywhere but you. You, on the other hand, thought it was all adorable; seeing a miniature Kyojuro all bashful and shy, the complete opposite of the actual Kyojuro.
The day so far had gone as smoothly as any of you had hoped for. Although you were a bit disappointed in not meeting Kyojuro’s father, you did understand their situation and sympathized; who wouldn’t go in a depressive state after losing the love of their life? In fact, if you were being absolutely honest, you’d probably be stuck in such a state if Kyojuro died. Then again, you were also a bit grateful that he hadn’t appeared all now; the memories of Kyojuro informing you of his father’s stern demeanor entering your mind.
Taking another sip of his tea, Kyojuro watched with love filled eyes as you softly reassured Senjuro and patted his head; the young boy nearly crumbling at the action. He knew the two of you would get along perfectly, but not this perfect. You being in the Rengoku estate was like a new light had entered a dark and damp cave, warming up the cold earth. For the first time in a long time, his home felt full, complete, put back together.
“Y-Yes but if I had to choose, pickled plums would be- father!” Senjuro’s explanation was cut short as the abrupt arrival of their father sucked out the air around you, the once engulfing warmth being replaced with mind numbing coldness. Kyojuro whipped his head around to see a look of absolute disapproval in his father’s sharp features; his eyes looking at his eldest before resting on your now nervous façade. Standing up, you wiped your hands on your kimono before bowing.
“Rengoku-Sama, i-it’s a pleasure to finally meet you. I am-” Your nervous introduction was cut short by Shinjuro, his battle worn hand raising itself to stop you. Your breath hitched at his motion, what if he already hated you? Was it because you wore the wrong attire? Or was it simply because he was one of those old men that didn’t think those younger than them should speak out of turn? Oh, Kami-Sama, you thought. Just let him be upset at my attire and nothing else.
“I know who you are. I’m only telling you this for your own good; you’re making a mistake.” He stated, sharp incandescent eyes swimming with multitudes of emotion. As you slowly processed his cryptic words, you began to dissect the mixed look he gave you. His face carried nothing but annoyance but his eyes, his eyes held worry, nostalgia and..sorrow? What did he mean by this? Surely, he meant that it would be a mistake to love someone with a higher, more noble status than you, right? Sucking air through your teeth, you watched as Kyojuro asked the very question on your mind, confusion and barely hidden hurt laced in his eyes.
“What do you mean, Father?” He asked in an abnormally soft voice, searching for any hint or answer in his father’s features. He didn’t understand. His father barely knew you, just your name and that you make his son trip over his own feet and disrupt his concentration breathing by giving him a simple smile. You held so much power over him and that wasn’t a bad thing, right? His father was like that when his mother was alive, hell he was probably a bigger love-sick fool than he let on.
“I meant what I said. She should be smart enough to figure it out. You know what we are, don’t you y/n? You understand perfectly and you’d be a fool to do anything but follow my words.” He said gruffly, eyes searching your face for the moment you figured it out; the moment you met him on the same wavelength. Without waiting for a proper response or question from any of you, Shinjuro left the engawa, leaving behind the three of you in a perplexed stupor.
With a slight frown, Kyojuro stood up and bowed. “I’m really sorry, y/n. My father he- you shouldn’t take his words to heart, he’s just-” Sighing and admitting defeat for lack of reasoning, he sank down to the wooden floor once more, a reassuring smile on his lips and saddened eyes resting on the sunset before turning to you, rough hands encasing your own. “I just didn’t think he’d leave his room. But never mind that, I should take you back home now, before it gets dark.”
You gave him a slight nod and that soft smile he absolutely adored, your heart banging with twinged sorrow and hope. At least he didn’t think lowly of you and went into a drunken rage. Senjuro rested his hand on your shoulder, giving it a light squeeze. “Anuie is right, father’s words can get a bit jumbled up when he's not all there. I’ll go pack you some snacks to bring home.” Shooting a narrowed gaze at his elder brother, his next words were laced with a cold warning. “Do not eat them on the way there, Anuie.” Hissing his words to his older brother, Senjuro quickly left for the kitchen, his eyes not leaving his brother until he was out of view.
Chuckling, Kyojuro rubbed the back of his neck. “He really does cherish you, I’d say he likes you a bit more than me!” You released a quick, short breath, humoring your boyfriend’s comment as your mind traveled elsewhere. You knew what his family was, what they were known for by those who did the same line of work. You knew and saw the potential dangers Kyojuro’s occupation entailed; evident by the couple of nights he would stumble into your home battered and bruised. You thought it was amazing and down right inspirational, seeing your boyfriend carry the torch from his father and ancestors with pride and dignity. At times you even envied him, possessing practically unlimited stamina and burning passion to fight for the weak.
Getting up, Kyojuro outstretched his hand for you to take, helping you up with ease. “Let’s get going, Sunflower. I can carry you all the way home if you wish.” Kyojuro ushered, gently pulling you along but stopping as he felt you stay in place. You had a hunch, based on Shinjuro’s words. He was a stern man, and from what Kyojuro had said about him from when he was a child, one that upheld a code of honor and justice. He and his wife were together for a while, managing to have two wonderful children in their time. His mother must’ve fretted over her husband every time he was out on a mission. Could that be the reasoning behind Shinjuro’s cryptic yet crystal clear words? Was he asking you to not be worried over his son?
“Kyojuro, wait, please.” You said, your short spell of silence finally broken. With a cocked eyebrow, Kyojuro looked at you with curiosity and tender love.
“Hm? What is it?” You let go of his hand as you dithered, the warmth leaving your hands as you were unsure how your request would come off.
“I wish to speak to your father,” Kyojuro’s face quickly morphed into one of utter confusion and bewilderment. “It’s just for a moment and then we can go.” You bit your lip as you watched the gears in your boyfriend’s head turn, clearly thinking hard about his answer. “Just show me to his room, I want to talk to him about something important.”
“Regarding his words?” Kyojuro asked as you nodded quickly to his question. Looking down the corridor his father disappeared down, he sighed softly. “Alright, I’ll take you to him. But, I cannot predict anything he says so if he says anything brash, just ignore it.” He complied, grabbing your hand again before guiding you down the darkening hallway. Stopping in front of the closed screen door, Kyojuro knocked on the wood.
“Father, y/n would like to say goodbye before we leave.” Opening the door, Kyojuro revealed to you a depressing scene; his father sitting and facing the darkening sky, his back being the only thing greeting you both. Entering the room, you shut the door behind you, a quiet yet clear signal that what you had to say was between you and his father.
Sitting down at the door, your senses soaked in the lingering scent of sake and the chill of the room. For a few pensive moments, it was silent. Shinjuro didn’t turn around as you shuffled closer and closer, finally stopping next to him. “Rengoku-Sama?” You called as you watched his sharp eyes continue to gaze out, not bothering to give you any attention. “Rengoku-Sama, you’re concerned, aren’t you? Concerned about me and how I’d manage if Kyojuro die-”
“When he dies. When.” He corrected quickly. “The damned idiot is destined to die early. It would’ve been one thing to die and not leave anyone that loves him behind but now you’re in the picture. And he’s an idiot for making you face such a possibility.” And with his last words, he looked at you, eyes swimming with sympathy. “I was an idiot for making Ruka worry every time I left, always waiting for a crow to tell her I died. I wouldn’t wish that on you. I don’t want that for you.” You blinked in slight shock, drinking in his words. “You seem like an alright person, someone that deserves the best, normal life possible. This isn’t normal. Having the one you love risk their life nearly every night fighting demons, isn’t normal.” He finished, fingers weaving and cracking themselves as he waited for your response.
You had to admit, you thought about the daunting possibility of Kyojuro dying on a mission, worried to hear his crow tell you the news of him dying with honor. His work life wasn’t an ideal one, especially when considering the domestic dream you both shared. But, that’s also what you loved about him. How he was able to protect people from what goes bump in the night, to be able to stare right at the perpetrators of inhuman cruelty and live to tell the tale. How he managed to see terrifying scenes of men, women and children killed and blood splattered everywhere yet still uphold that tantalizing smile that seemed to warm everything around it.
“I..understand what you mean.” You spoke softly, a small smile gracing your lips. “I get a bit afraid too whenever he’s away. I try not to think about it  but the fear is always there. I’ve also thought about the possibility of him dying as well and if I were to be honest, I might not take it too well.” Shinjuro’s eyes widened a bit, taken aback by your honesty. “However, I think that just goes to show how much I love him, don't you think? To love someone so much that them reaching the end of their short life span would be absolutely devastating. But, I think the manner in which he dies will make me feel very proud.”
Your smile grew a bit wider as you looked out to the sky. “Kyojuro is a man who upholds a strong sense of duty and justice. He believes that protecting the weak from those that misuse their strength is his birthright and I admire him for that. He truly understands the weight his righteous mission brings on his shoulders. He appreciates the little things in life. So, for him to die in battle, would be the best way he could die.” Looking again at Shinjuro, you took in his slightly furrowed eyebrows; sake drenched mind trying its best to take in your words. “I’m okay, not being able to live a normal life with a normal man. I love the extraordinary aspects of life, I fell in love with an extraordinary man! And I wouldn’t trade that in for nothing.”
Standing up, you brushed off your kimono, nimble fingers running over the detailed fabric. “Rengoku-Sama, thank you for being concerned about my future and worrying about what’s best for me. You truly are a nice person. But you needn’t worry anymore. I’ll be alright, I promise. Take care, now.” You said softly, finally leaving Shinjuro to his lonesome as you left the room.
Hearing yours and Kyojuro’s footsteps recede down the hall, the elder Rengoku sighed, mulling over your endearing words about his son. He hadn’t really thought about it in that way; having death in battle be the most optimal and respectful end to his son’s life. Instead, he used to see it as a way to show how weak a slayer was, a way to show to the world how talentless the person was while alive. Shinjuro felt his lips curl ever so slightly at the thought of you. The once chilled room seemed to flood with embracing warmth as Shinjuro’s gaze fell on the lone headstone under the blue wisteria.
“Kyojuro really did choose a good one, right Ruka?”

It had been two weeks since you had seen Rengoku. Your ankle had healed, and you were once again fully mobile- much to your relief. You weren’t sure how much more limping around with a cane or crutch you could take. After your ankle healed and you got the all-clear from Kocho, you went through the hoops of making her your primary physician.
You hadn’t ever met a doctor you could be so comfortable around- though the whole bonding over being attacked by a demon probably had everything to do with that. Still, you were pleased with your new doctor, nonetheless. Not to mention, giving your money to a smaller business worked more for your morality than signing it all away to a huge corporation like a hospital that already had more than enough business on its side.
Rengoku never went a day without sending you texts. You had a feeling he did this with all his friends and acquaintances; texting you a ‘very good morning!’ or asking when you’d be getting off work at night and to be careful on the way. You find it pretty cute. Finding a man as well rounded, optimistic and diligent in the ways of keeping in touch wasn’t exactly something you’d consider common; especially since he didn’t use any sort of abbreviations and spoke in fully formatted sentences like he was standing right in front of you.
Apparently, with midterms and exams coming up, he’s been busy keeping his students occupied and prepping them for passing grades. That, alongside any extra tutoring lessons or occasional substitute gigs has his days packed.
“Being a teacher must be tough,” you had thought to yourself during one of your many threads where he explained such things.
You remember the second time Kaname showed up to your house unannounced. Luckily you were home when he landed on the branch outside your window. Though, that didn’t stop you from being startled at the big black mass that landed and pecked at the window to your living room. You were confused as he hopped right on inside when you opened the glass window before he flew to your couch and just sat himself on the arm of it. You didn’t see anything attached to his leg like before- which would’ve been odd since Rengoku had literally texted you earlier- so you were wondering why he was there in the first place.
Then your phone dinged.
(Rengoku): Per chance, you haven’t seen Kaname flying around, have you?
Clearly, Rengoku was also unaware that his crow was hanging around your place. The picture you sent him of the black bird leisurely resting in your living room had him calling you for the first time. It was comical, hearing his voice over speaker phone to reprimand Kaname as if the crow would actually understand what was being said to him and reflect on his actions.
It obviously didn’t work since the next day Kaname was once again pecking at your window as you got ready to leave the house to run some errands. And you continued to allow him inside. Enabling this behavior is probably the opposite of what Rengoku wanted from his work crow, but were you just supposed to sit and stare at that poor, needy bird out your window? No. Of course you weren’t.
You were sat on the ground by your door, pulling on your shoes when Kaname had cawed behind you. You made a small noise of surprise before you felt his talons land on the shoulder of your jacket. His added weight on your shoulder and his black avian body perched on you was something he hadn’t done before, but you smiled at the fact this bird was getting more and more comfortable with you. Of course, you would then remember that this was a working bird, and he wasn’t exactly yours.
“You want to come out with me?” Kaname cawed with a small flap of his wings as if he truly understood your question and was giving you an answer. “Alright. You’ll have to stay outside when I’m in stores though, okay?” Another small flap of his wings.
You stand and grab your bag, going through the checklist of what you’ll need leaving the house. Phone. Wallet. Keys. And whatever else your bag had hiding inside it. With an impulsion decision, you pull out your phone and take a picture of Kaname resting on your shoulder before sending it to Rengoku- who was probably still working since it was still early afternoon- and slipping your phone in your pocket.
“Remember to behave, Kaname,” you tell the crow one more time before you leave the house with him remaining perched on your shoulder.
Tumblr media
You thought that having Kaname perched on your shoulder was a cute thing. It showed that he liked you and had- to some degree- grown to trusted you. Having a little friend around for Taco to chase was a bit of an annoying exercise sometimes since the feline must’ve felt jealous. Or that's how you justify the way Taco would crawl up your legs to try and get the same level of attention at the crow. Still, having a smart corvid hang around willingly made you feel… magical? For lack of better terms. If this is what witches in the woods in fairy tales felt like you were more than willing to commit to the bit.
That is, it’s all comfortable in the comfort of your home. The moment you stepped outside, you could feel the eyes of all the people also on the street focused on you. People from across the street giving you looks like you wouldn’t notice. Kids on playgrounds in the park you had to cross definitely had your face growing warm with the cheers of “that ladies got a big bird on her!”.
It's silly how you had completely forgotten that it wasn’t exactly a normal, everyday thing to witness.  Still, Kaname remained unbothered. Lucky him.
It wasn’t like you could shoo him off now. That would’ve made you feel more guilty than embarrassed. No, you couldn’t do that to him. So, instead of acting like a bitter woman, you just lifted your hand and used the back of your fingers to lightly ruffle his feathers just under his beak. His nuzzle into your hand as you gave him attention sealed the deal.
When you get to the first store you need to stop at- a department store- you point to a small, city planted tree that sat in its own little square of dirt surrounded by brick that really needed to be upkept a bit better.
“Now, you remember our agreement?” You talk face to face with the bird in broad daylight, not acting like a loon in the least. Still, Kaname bellows back to you like he was agreeing. “Good. I won’t be long.” You turn your back on your trusted corvid pal before you’re walking through the automated glass doors of the store.
True to your word, you were in and out as quick as you could be- or in this case, as quick as the newly trained cashier who was stressing out over their first real day could go. You made sure to give a quick “you’re doing great” on your way out. When the same automated doors- with a few new smudges from strangers who couldn’t resist touching the clean glass- reopen to let you back outside, you see a small gaggle of teenagers. They surround the same, wimpy looking city planted tree you had left Kaname in, and with their phones out were snapping photos and a video of the cawing bird.
For a bird, he sure had a lot of personality. Though, you supposed that all birds did in one way or another and crows were already smart to begin with. Though, you felt irritated as they all hovered around him like some sort of attraction.
Stepping off to the side, you get out of the way of the entrance before you’re calling him. You figured that the kids would probably keep filming and snapping photos, so you turned your back to them before calling him back. Kaname would know the back of your head anyways.
“Kaname,” you speak clearly. It wasn’t loud, but just enough to be heard over the bustle of the afternoon traffic. The crow’s head twitched before his wings unfurled and he was gliding gracefully over to your shoulder that he favored. With another quick finger pet on the crown of his bowed head, you start off again. You ignore the teens who were hollering after you, feeling like an attraction just as Kaname had been treated as.
When you finally don’t hear them anymore and make it to a section of street that isn’t so thick with people that you’re stepping on each other, you pat Kaname affectionately on his beak that he once again nuzzles into.
“I’m sorry about them. Your picture is probably going to be floating around school campus’s now.” Maybe he understood, maybe he didn’t. You didn’t speak crow, so his cawing back to your linguistic woes didn’t spark much need to keep talking.
You continue your errand running in much the same fashion. Window shopping here, stepping into a small shop there, always leaving Kaname somewhere to wait for you- although this time higher than eye level so he wouldn’t be as bothered by the public. It was when you had just finished your final store run when you felt Kaname tug at your hair after riding on your shoulder for a while.
“Ow!” You whine when his beak snags some of your hair and tugs on it. You turn to him to try and him to quit it when you see a familiar combination of blond and red. Though, it was atop a much smaller body.
A small boy, maybe high school aged, has that same flame styled hair that you recognize. He was stuck between two other boys, one with his arms slung around Rengoku’s(?) shoulder. The other was hovering around like he was herding him. The boy who resembled Rengoku looked so uncomfortable that when they rounded a corner, your body just took off after them.
You were right to trust your instincts.
The two were classic, low-grade bullies from the look of things. Taking the smaller Rengoku’s bag and shifting through it like they were looking for something. You didn’t even realize that now is the time that schools had released their students for the day. You wanted to help but had no idea how to start. Shouting maybe? A strong Hey! would surely get their attention and maybe little Rengoku, who may not even be related (somehow), could slip away in the distraction.
Luckily, Kaname disrupted your brainstorming and created an opportunity for you.
With a loud and crass and angry sounding caw, his wings opened, and he flew towards the two bullies like a graceful, winged bullet. His talon’s had landed in the nest of hair of the boy who had the little Rengoku’s bag, effectively making him drop it. With another warning caw, jumps off his head- taking a few stray hairs with him, and flew up and swooped back down to attack the other boy’s skull with small pecks of his beak. You were in awe. Kaname didn’t even need your help defending the bullied victim! Still-
“Hey!” Your original plan of just shouting was definitely more effective when you had an aggressive black bird on your side. Kaname stopped his pecking and flew back up into the air, circling around before he was landing on your shoulder. His eyes that were gentle and relaxed before were now narrowed and attentive. “Leave that boy alone and get out of here,” you command with your stance wide, and arms crossed with your errand shopping bags hanging in the crux of your elbow. You knew that it wasn’t your demeanor that sent the brats packing, but the aura of the angry corvid that added a boost to your intimidation.
When they were out of sight, you let out a sigh and you felt Kaname relax too. Uncrossing your ams, you jog over to the boy who was now gathering the things that had fallen out of his backpack. Kneeling on the ground with him, you place your bags down and put your hand gently on his shoulder to get his attention.
“Hey,” you say again, much softer this time than before when you bellowed it. “Are you alright?” You ask.
The boy nods and his completely tied back hair, aside from the front strands, bounce as he does. You hear him hum in affirmation too. He did a bad job of convincing you that he was really okay. Still, you give him a moment to collect himself.
“You’re name,” you start as you pick up a stray pencil that had rolled away from him, “it’s Rengoku, isn’t it?” You were near positive. After all, who else could look so closely related to the Rengoku that you know? When he lifts his head and the eyes that also resemble the ones you know was proof enough.
“Yes?” He sounded nervous. Rightfully so. You’re quick to defend yourself.
“Oh! I just- well, you look a lot like someone I know, so I just took a wild guess.” Rengoku had mentioned before that he had a little brother in high school. “He mentioned he had a kid brother once too.” The more you tried to save face, the more awkward the whole thing felt.
Still, the little boy’s face seemed to relax at the mention of familiar individual.
“You know my older brother?”
“Sure do,” you reassure. Helping him pack away the rest of his fallen items into his bag, you pick up your own bags and walk with him back out onto the main street. “Where are you heading? Do you want me to walk you?” Your sudden offer must’ve flustered him since his cheeks went pink. You were still a stranger, so yeah, it was kind of weird.
“I’m okay!” It sounded like he meant it that time, more so because he was embarrassed and blurted it out in such flustered conviction. “I’m just going home. I’m not far now.”
You hum worriedly but give in anyway. Then, the familiar weight you had gotten used to on your shoulder departed. Kaname and swapped from you to rest on the head of the smaller Rengoku, using his blonde roots as a nest. You chuckle. Looks like he’d have a well-trained escort home, so you weren’t needed after all.
“Alright, then. Be careful going home.” He bashfully nods before he’s walking away from you. With a small huff of anxiety for his safety, you check the time on your phone. “Oh, damn!” You curse to yourself before rushing back the way you had come. It had gotten so late that if you didn’t get home soon, you wouldn’t have time to feed and play with Taco before it got dark. He’d pout about that for days if you missed his usual ‘me time’!

Senjuro walks into the apartment he lives in with his older brother and let out a deep breath as he dropped his bag and sat to remove his shoes. Kyojuro, who had managed to come home earlier than usual by deciding to take the short, 15 question quizzes he had to grade back home with him instead of doing it on school premises, heard the familiar sounds of the front door opening, closing then locking. He didn’t need to go out tonight for demon slaying, so he had already changed into more comfortable clothes by the time Senjuro returned.
Hair pulled off his neck with a hair tie that was fighting for its life and his reading glasses on the bridge of his nose. The sweater he wore was light in color with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows as his lazy, black pants kept his legs warm. The air conditioning was almost always running in the apartment since both boys always seemed to run a bit warming than others.
“You are back early today,” Senjuro greets when the older sibling stood behind him and helped him off the floor when he slipped into his house shoes. Senjuro often wore slippers inside since his feet were always so cold- his older brother was the opposite walking around the apartment barefoot.
“It isn’t often I can spend so much free time at home,” Kyojuro answers. The two walk deeper into the house when Kaname flies inside and to the wooden perch Kyojuro had set up months ago for him to rest on in the living room.
The apartment was small, but just enough for the two boys. When Kyojuro had moved out of his family home, he was insistent that Senjuro come with him. Their father wasn’t fit to raise the youngest right now and everyone knew it.
The main space was open and spacious. A single three cushion couch was in the middle of the open area with a tv mounted on the wall. The small coffee table in front of the couch is scattered with items and random odds and ends that never made it back to their proper place. Behind the couch was a small table that could seat four and was currently covered in the quizzes Kyojuro was previously grading. Beyond the living room was a small kitchen that Senjuro was in charge of since his older brother could not cook to save his life. Just down the short hall were their respective bedrooms, an extra room Kyojuro uses for an office space and the bathroom.
Just quaint enough for the Rengoku boys.
Kyojuro took to gathering his graded and ungraded papers into piles so he could make room for the homework of Senjuro’s that would soon be replacing his own mess. He could finish in the office later- his little brother’s studies are more important and this way he could ask questions if he needed help instead of holing up in his room at his own desk.
Hearing Kaname honk softly for a dried treat, Senjuro is quick to oblige. Kyojuro stops his gathering as he takes his glasses off to have them hang off the v-neck of his sweater instead and crosses his arms. He sets his sights on his faithful crow.
“Where have you been all day?” Kyojuro knew Kaname understood him, and he also knew he could get an answer if the bird felt like he wanted to. Senjuro, who had fed him his treat, ran his hands along his back with the flow of his feathers. Then, the mysterious woman he met today came to his mind.
“Ani ue,” Senjuro calls out the formality of his brother even though he’s been told time and time again that he doesn’t need to. Still, Kyojuro answers with an acknowledged hum, pushing his slight annoyance at his crow aside. “Have you met a girl recently?”
The question stuns Kyojuro for a second. Longer than a second actually. Really, the bout of silence that followed the innocent question was long enough to make the air awkward.
“Could you be more specific?” Kyojuro asked in return. His mind went to a space that his little brother didn’t need to be meddling in. Meeting a woman like… romantically? Or was he just over thinking?
“In terms of meeting someone new.”
He was over thinking.
“Ah,” moron. He curses to himself. “I see.” He racks his brain with a hand at his chin. He often meets all sorts of people at work. New substitute teachers come and go all the time. Maybe he meant one of them? Or maybe…
Kyojuro’s eyes widen in epiphany as he looks back at Kaname. Senjuro had been in classes all day, as had he been. When he wasn’t busy with his job as messenger bird, Kaname often lazed here at home. There was only one place Kaname had been frequently disappearing to instead of staying in the comfort of his home recently. His arms dropped back down to his sides as he walked closer to his crow and brother.
“Is there a reason you want to know?” Kyojuro sits on the couch and offers the cushion next to him as Senjuro takes it easily. Slightly facing each other, they carried on their conversation.
“I dropped my bag on the street today,” Senjuro starts. Kyojuro knew that wasn’t the full truth. As much as he hated it, Senjuro was timid enough to be picked on by other kids and Kyojuro wasn’t always around to help him. “When I was picking up my stuff, this woman came to help me. She knew my name; said I looked like someone she knew.” Senjuro’s habit of picking at his nail beds started up and Kyojuro quietly pulled his hands away from each other. “Kaname was with her too. I was just curious.”
Kyojuro looked into the wide, curious eyes of his little brother and smiled. He called for his crow, and Kaname easily made a home on the back of the couch between the two siblings. Kyojuro pet Kaname’s back and under his beak, alternating.
“You were with y/n-san all day weren’t you?”
“Yes!” The crow loudly cawed.
“Don’t you go and forget where it is you actually live,” Kyojuro lightly reprimands. “And don’t go speaking around her either. You’ll scare the wits out of her cat.” He returns his attention back to his brother. “To answer your question from earlier now, yes. I do believe I’m familiar with the woman you ran into today." Senjuro took notice to the change in his brother's face. Did he know he was making such a softened expression? "She and I met recently.”
Something in Senjuro’s eyes shined at the mention of you from Kyojuro’s mouth directly. Maybe it was because he didn’t need to worry about a stranger knowing who he was. Or maybe it was something else Kyojuro just wasn’t picking up on. Senjuro spent a little bit longer talking about you, how you had shopping bags, how Kaname was so comfortably hanging around you, and how you seemed like a nice person.
Soon, the brother-on-brother chit-chat had to come to a stop. The sun would be setting soon and Senjuro still had homework to do and dinner to make. Kyojuro took his papers to his office and shut the door. Dropping his work on his desk, he flipped on the desk lamp before he sat himself in his chair. The leather creaked at his added weight and the chair reclined when he leaned back against it.
Digging his phone from his pocket of his slacks, he stared at his reflection in the black screen. Kyojuro really wanted to thank you for helping Senjuro, but for some reason he couldn’t even tap on the screen of his smartphone to wake it up.
Kyojuro wasn’t a religious man, but he did thank whatever god had been watching him when the screen lit itself up with an incoming text.
(y/n-san): Did Kaname make it back home?
Kyojuro laughs out loud at your message. Senjuro hears it echo from the kitchen. Kyojuro would get his grading done first, then he'd set aside time for you.
Tumblr media
You jump out of your skin when, as you’re mindlessly browsing through your socials, an unexpected call jumps your phone to life in both vibrations and a loud ringtone you had always seem to forget the sound of. Fumbling your phone in your hands, you snatch it up before it could give way to gravity and hit the ground... or Taco who was resting on your lap.
Seeing Rengoku’s name printed on your screen had you mentally lagging before you’re answering the call. Any later and it would’ve been dropped, then you’d be forced with the dilemma of if you call him back or just pretend it never happened.
The sound of light white noise greets you for a moment as you bring the phone up to your ear. Then, you start off the call first.
“Hello?”
“Ah! You picked up!” He sounded excited. You mindlessly start petting through Taco’s fur as he still lay peacefully on your lap. “I’m glad. I was worried you may be busy given the time.”
“That makes sense,” you agree. Any other night you’d be just about ready for work. “I have the night off tonight, so your timing works out.”
“How fortunate!” You’ve never heard someone say those words without it being sarcastic before. He really sounded like he was relieved he wasn’t taking up your time. You smile as you lean back against the cushions of your couch and turn the tv you had on for background noise down. It was turned onto some random celebrity reality show or something, you weren't really paying attention to it.
“Kaname did make it back safely to answer your earlier question. I apologize I couldn’t reply immediately. I was finishing up some work that I had already stopped in the middle of once.”
“Don’t worry about it.” You shift your legs. Taco mewls in annoyance. “Was it for…?” You didn’t know how to ask if he was talking about his work in education or his demon slaying gig.
“It was for my classes! Grading quizzes can take up a significant amount of my time. I was also helping my brother with some homework when he needed it!”
You perk up at the mention of his brother.
“That reminds me,” you start, “I ran into him on the road today. I was out running errands when we met.”
“Yes,” Rengoku's voice took on a softer tone, “that is one reason I wanted to call you.” You stay quiet. Unsure on what to say next. “Senjuro is a gentle child, so he is easily the target of people who feel the need to push other's around. I feel guilty that he doesn’t express to me all the things that happens, but you helped him out today, yes?”
“Well, sort of. Kaname did most of the work if I’m being honest.” You stop and think about what happened right before you noticed the little Rengoku- who’s name you now know to be Senjuro. Kaname was tugging at your hair, almost like he was trying to get your attention to shift somewhere else. “Without him, I don’t know if I would’ve been able to chase off those brats myself. So, really the credit is all his.”
You hear Rengoku chuckle on the other end of the line. It was easy to tell just by his voice and concerned tone alone that Rengoku really cared about his little brother.
“Does your brother do any after school clubs?”
“Pardon?” The question caught the flame-head off guard.
“I just- and stop me if this is totally invasive- but I thought that maybe if he needed, I could check on him from time to time after school. Just to make sure he’s not being bullied?” Saying it out loud made you realize just how crazy you sounded.  It sounded like you were trying to butt into their lives! “I’m sorry. It’s just I’m usually free in the afternoons and all so-”
“I’d appreciate that.”
“Oh,” you breathe. You half expected him to kindly reject you as you shoved your foot further into your big mouth. “Really?”
“Senjuro sometimes spends time in the school’s library until I’m ready to go home with him. On the days where he or I cannot go back home together, I do worry about him. I know he'll need to defend himself one day, but he’s still young.”
There’s a bout of silence between you both for an uncomfortable amount of time. You wonder if the call disconnected at one point because it was so quiet. Still, the time recording the length of the call kept ticking up, so Rengoku was definitely still on the other line.
“So,” you clear your throat. “Senjuro-kun likes to read?”
“He does!” The pep is thrust back into his voice and you feel relieved.
The call lasts for much longer than you anticipated. So long that Taco had gotten off your lap, paced around the couch twice, ran up and down the halls and whined for food all the span of it. You don’t remember the last time you had a long phone call that wasn’t work or business related. Even the few previous calls you've recieved from Rengoku weren't this drawn out. It was enjoyable.
You notice the numbers glaring at you from the clock of your living room and gasp. It was getting late. Really late. And Rengoku- even if he wasn’t working tonight- had classes tomorrow.
“It’s getting late,” you find the next best gap in conversation and throw in the beginning of the end of the call. “Shouldn’t you be getting some rest? It wouldn’t be good for a teacher to be dead tired all day because he was up so late.”
“Believe it or not, I’m not a morning person at all! Senjuro brews me coffee every morning since I tend to be grumpy from the long nights I should be used to by now.”
You laugh at the image. You don’t think you’ve seen him frown once since you met him- even if it hasn’t been that long.
“Even more reason to let you go.” You get up off the couch and stretch. As if predicting your moves, Taco races towards your room ahead of you. Of course, you’d wash up properly before joining your feline son. “I enjoyed talking to you, Rengoku-san.”
“You don’t need to be so polite,” he insists. “Referring to me by name alone is just fine.”
“You’ll need to drop the formalities with me too then. It’d be weird if I spoke casually with you, just for you to not.”
“Deal.”
“Good night, Rengoku.”
“Sweet dreams, y/n.
The call ends. Even though you wash your face with cold water, your skin still feels warm in your palms.

I know I said Kyojuro would never die on my watch but…
Imagine boarding the Mugen Train and finding yourself sitting near this handsome but eccentric man in a flaming haori. You truly try to mind your own business but he's far too fascinating to ignore. His eyes shine brighter than candle flames, his fiery hair is wild and unruly, and his smile is so contagious you have to cover your mouth with your hand to hide your own. You watch out of the corner of your eye as he eats box after box of beef and rice, effusively expressing his delight after every mouthful.
And then a bunch of kids join him and he's just so good with them, and you can't help but melt a little as they gather around him and he shares his food with them. There's just something about him. He's magnetic, and before you know it you're full-on staring at him. He's far too distracted by the kids and the food to notice though.
"Ticket please," the conductor says, ending your reverie. You hand him the ticket and he punches a hole in it.
The lights flicker for a second, pulling your gaze upward.
"Hello!" A bright, cheery voice says beside you.
Your heart leaps as you see the fiery man standing right next to you, smiling down at you.
He sits beside you and you chat for the rest of the journey. The conversation flows easily; you tell him about your life and he tells you about his. You laugh together, share little in-jokes, and when it comes time for you both to disembark the train, you find you don't want to leave each other's sides.
So you don't. You go and get lunch together– he somehow still has room for more food! Lunch leads to a walk together. Then dinner. Then talking beneath the stars. When it finally gets too late you bid each other farewell with a promise to meet again tomorrow.
And you do. You meet up the next day and the next day and the next. Before you know it you're head over heels for each other. He proposes, you accept of course, and the pair of you marry. You live in a beautiful house, filled with love. Children come, just as fiery and sweet as their father. He kisses you every day, tells you how much he adores you. Every single day, long after the children are grown and have children of their own, long after both your hair and his turns white.
You love each other with your entire hearts, your lives filled with a happiness you can scarcely believe is real.
And then you wake up to the sound of screaming. The sun is low in the sky; it's morning, and the Mugen Train is wrecked. You have no idea what is happening… your husband is gone, your hands are young again. Every inch of your body hurts.
People in brown uniforms are fussing over you, patching you up, telling you everything will be alright.
Your heart thrums as you search for him. Was he hurt in the train wreck? The thought sickens you.
"It was a dream," they tell you. "You were on the Mugen Train. A mechanical fault caused fumes which made all the passengers hallucinate. You're okay now."
The medics take you away on a stretcher and that's when you see him, the man you love, his body being covered by a shroud as the children you remember from a lifetime ago wail and mourn his passing.
Grief hits you like a landslide. You can't breathe, not without him. And as the medics carry you away, ignoring your desperate pleas, it occurs to you that you never even knew his name.

a/n: i don't really know if this is sad but I hope you liked it!
Tumblr media
"I'm sorry [name]-san, but you've developed this illness that I have no cure for yet." Shinobu said warily at you, eyeing the chart than you. Sadness could be seen in her eyes as she looked at you. You looked hopeless and motionless as you heard the news.
The ringing in your ears is the only thing you've heard. You knew this was coming. The hunch you had started when you coughed up blood one morning while Rengoku was making breakfast. The sadness flooding you and the dread filling your stomach made unwanted bile rise up in your throat. You didn't wanna leave him alone.
You don't wanna traumatize him again. He love you and you loves him dearly. To have an illness like his mother is a betrayal. You promised to stay with him till the end. You did.
What a cruel game you always have to play. As Shinobu looked at you with a deeper frown, she made a letter and sent it to Oyakata-sama. Those contents informing him what's your situation. As her crow flew away, she puts a reassuring hand on your shoulder but there was a sad frown on her face, eyes looking more sad. She couldn't lose you too.
You were a bit glad that Rengoku was away. You didn't wanna bear the sight of seeing him crying just because of you. Why? You felt useless. Utterly useless like what his father said.
"How are you a benefit to my son!? You're nothing but a hindrance to him! You can't even wield a sword properly! You weaklings won't ever be stronger! You guys are useless!" The head of the Rengoku estate was filled with shouting as you entered the premises. What a shame. You were being shouted by the Rengoku Shinjuro himself. That night was filled with Kyojuro reassuring you that you were enough for him and all that but you pretended everything.
What an utterly useless thing you really were. Faking it till you make it hurts. You never really made it but it is known to the hashiras and lower rank demon slayers that you never wanna go back to the estate. The fake smiles you give them were so pure and sweet to them that they missed loads of details.
The way you fiddled with your hands and the way you starved yourself and not eating food because of those thoughts consumed by you. The way those days ate you alive were something that made you wanna puke up the food you ate. You just wanted to drown yourself from thinking about it.
A little kid stumbled on the ground with a very very messy hair, like they've been ran over by a dozen of horses. An awfully big bruise can be noticed on the child's face as the suspect of the bruise threw more punches on them. Like as if it wasn't their child.
"you utterly useless child! you're the cause of your mother's death! because of you she had to suffer! she had to suffer from the pain because of you!" your father said. as if you weren't his child and as if you weren't already in so much pain. you could only do much but sob as your father threw more punches.
"oh look! it's them! the person who wasn't loved by their father!" a guy said, loud enough for you to hear as you walked by carrying a wooden basket on your back. your father passed away by the hands of a demon. and you couldn't do anything to save him. what a really useless child you were. as if he wasn't sacrificing you to the man-eating demon.
Cruelty was always in your side. You couldn't help the fact but be sad all over again as you realized this. You were just beginning to be happy. You were beginning to be loved. So why of all times does this has to happen?
"thank you Shinobu-chan for your help. I'm always grateful for you." You said to Shinobu as you faked a smile. And she returned it back to you. As you begin to stand up, you wobbled and as you finally begin to reach and open the door, you fell. Your feet and knees felt weak. Your calves felt as if they were so numb and sore. Your ankles felt like they were stabbed by nails.
"[name]-chan! Are you okay!?" Shinobu frantically shouted as she rushed to you with wide eyes. You reassured her with a I'm okay and tried to get up only to fall again.
"[name]-chan, please stop moving! you have wounds on your legs!" Shinobu shouted as she called her kakushis to help you to a room so that she could treat your wounds. After finishing up in cleaning your wounds she went out to check something out she said.
As Shinobu came out from your room, she pursed her lips into a thin line and went to her office. Seemingly taking out a paper and something to write with. After doing so and finishing the letter, she called out for her crow and sent the letter. She hope and prayed to God that the letter reaches him quickly.
As Kyojuro swiped the last demon of the horde, he noticed Shinobu's crow flying above as there was a letter attached to it's leg. Kyojuro wiped the sweat on his forehead and reached forward so that the crow of Shinobu would snoop down to his arm. Once the had done that, he scratched it's head as it perches on his arm. After awhile, he stopped and took the letter and he wasn't prepared for the contents inside.
Dear Kyojuro-san,
I am not pressuring you into finishing your mission quickly but I have to inform you of [name]-chan's condition. She has been ill for awhile and only now did it get worst. I've concluded and analyzed that her illness is like of what your mother has had. Just a few moments prior, she fell down on the floor and her feet hurts. Her skin is wounded with wounds from the wound and her skin is a bit pale. From my recent examination on her, her blood levels are low and she lacks iron. I've also found this chronic virus that I'm not sure off. Her organs are shutting down and her nutrients are low. She's been coughing out blood and her body has become weak. Please, as immediately as you're done with your mission, please visit the mansion immediately. She might not make it if you came late. Please keep safe too.
Sincerely, Shinobu.
His eyes are wide after he read the letter. Are you okay? Since were you sick? How does he not know? Did you know and you just did not tell him? Many questions were circling his mind as he went to the direction back to the headquarters. He didn't care if he was tired, he has to go to you. He ran and hopped on trees to get there immediately, with Shinobu's crow following behind.
As he arrived at the butterfly estate he immediately went to Shinobu's office and there she was shocked. After he asked where you were she redirected him to your room with pursed lips. He could sense that she too was sad. He knows that she see's you as her older sister.
As they saw your room he saw your face. You were a bit too pale and he could definitely sense that you're tired. You looked more worst than his mother ever was. You looked like you could die any minute and this illness was similar to his mother but more worst. This was eating you alive.
He could see your wide eyes as you look at him and then to Shinobu who only smiled sadly at you and he could see the sad smile you had too. Eyes wandering back to him, you faked a laugh, so fake just to make the atmosphere lighter.
"it seems you've found out my secret, kyojuro." You said smiling sadly at him as if you had already accepted your fate.
He just rushly sauntered his way to you and grabbed your hand gently, kissing it lightly as tears pooled down on his eyes. Shinobu turned to leave as she took it a sign for you guys to discuss the matter.
"why didn't you tell me?" He asked as tears slipped out of his eyes. The loving daze he once held now covered with fear looked on your own ones with tears slipping from them.
"I didn't want you to stress more. You have priorities." You just replied as if you knew this was coming.
"but you are a priority!" He whisper-shouted as he closed his eyes while more tears slid out.
"I love you very much Kyo, I'm sorry I didn't tell tou immediately. I just didn't want to be a hindrance to you." You recited his father's words as you wiped away the tears of sadness. He said nothing so you continued.
"we can't do anything Kyo. It's eating me alive. I can't even stand up properly anymore."
"there must be a way! You can't just die." He shouted, tears falling more from his eyes.
"i love you Kyo. I'm really sorry." You told him as you felt your pulse slowing. You kissed his lips and leaned on his neck.
"I love you too." Was all he said as he sobbed and cradled your body.
And those were the last words you told to him as you slept and took your last breath. You no longer held his hands nor cupped his face. Your hands were now cold and you weren't alive anymore. Everyone can hear Kyojuro sob in the room as he clinged on to you for dear life, hoping that you'd come back. As if there was a miracle going to happen. But sadly, it wasn't true as tou had no more heartbeat. As you no longer saw the bright rays of sunshine and you no longer ate with him.
And finally, he thought as he kneels down on the battle field with a hole in his stomach, that he can see you once again. That he can love you again. That he will see more sunrises and tomorrows with you. that you'd see more of his smiles and he'd see more of your's. And as he woke up, he saw you waiting for him in the gates of Heaven. Peacefully smiling at him and reaching out to hug him as tears slipped out from his eyes once again and there he felt at peace, once again.

Twenty One.
Kyojuro x gn reader
A/N: Today is my 21st birthday, since Kyojuro’s is only three days after mine, I figured I’d write this </3
Word count: 1.2k
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’re humming softly, hanging the laundry on the line so it will dry as the sun rises. It’s peaceful, dew covering the grass as a symphony of frogs can be heard through the trees by the pond. Birds chirp softly as they wake, accompanying you in your solitude. Today is a special one, Kyojuro is turning twenty. You smile at the thought, you had some activities planned for the day to celebrate his completed teenage years and welcome him into early adulthood. You’d make breakfast together, spend the morning quietly just as he liked.
Then, in the afternoon you’d go on a walk to the pond less than a mile from your estate and have a small picnic. Finally, in the evening, you’d be meeting up with your fellow Hashira to really celebrate him. Kyojuro wasn’t aware of any of this, which made it even more special to you. It was hard to get anything by him, never mind surprise him. You clipped the last piece of laundry, yelping as warm arms wrapped around your midsection. “Kyojuro! You scared me!” You’re laughing now, feet leaving the ground as he twirls you. “Sorry, my love.” He’s laughing too.
“It’s alright, it doesn’t even matter.” He’s setting you down, allowing you to turn and face him. “What matters is this…” you're pushing upwards, kissing his lips tenderly before pulling away. “Happy birthday, my shining star.” You smile harder as his face blooms red, eyes diverting from yours with a wobbly smile. “What’s that look for?” You teased softly, hands cupping his warm cheeks. “I didn’t think anyone would remember.” He confesses softly, a look of hurt dawning on your face. “Didn’t think anyone would remember? It’s May 10th, the most important day.”
He’s turning redder, eyes shutting as he presses his forehead to yours. “I’m sorry.” It’s soft and meek, you have to wonder how many birthdays passed him by where nobody remembered. “Nothing to be sorry for, it’s your birthday so stop apologizing.” A real smile creeps up his face, eyes opening slowly to look down at you. “Thank you.” You kiss him again, hoping it gets your feelings across better than any words you could utter. “I have a whole day planned for you, Kyo. So why don’t we start with breakfast?” His smile was blinding . “We’ll make it together?” He was letting you go, taking your hand in his to pull you back towards the house.
“Of course! We’ll make whatever you want.”
The kitchen was a mess by the time you were done, flour covering your cheeks while strawberry jam covered his. You were laughing, sitting on the porch because the sun had yet to dry the dew off the grass, eating the breakfast you had made together. “This is why we don’t make breakfast together.” He’s laughing as he eats, watching you carefully as you try the food. “No, this is why you don’t make breakfast.” It’s lighthearted, funny even, and it means the world to him for some reason. He loves how unserious you can be, a beautiful change of pace from the life he knew after his mother passed. He could laugh with you, speak his mind and not worry.
“Touché.” His face was beginning to hurt from the smile that wouldn’t leave. You made his heart feel so impossibly full, as if it would burst at any moment. “So, I was thinking we could clean up, us and the kitchen I mean. And then we can pack a basket and head down to the pond. Maybe go see Senjuro too, or even invite him on the picnic?” You loved the way his eyes seemed to sparkle. “That sounds wonderful, I’ll send a crow to him in a little bit. I’m sure he’s still sleeping.” If Kyojuro could, he’d have already moved Senjuro in with the two of you by now. The boy didn’t want to leave their father alone, even if he deserved it. Kyojuro respected the decision of course. Despite everything, he still loved his father.
“You know, I was thinking of ways to make this day special for you. Especially since you’ve been granted some time off by Master. I’ve been struggling, but I hope the things I have planned for you are worthwhile.” You were pretty sure he’d love it, though you still harboured doubt. “You could never disappoint me. This is already more than enough.” Which was the honest truth. A simple happy birthday from you would have been enough to make his heart full. The fact that you were going the extra mile was enough to solidify his decision… he’d ask you to marry him. Perhaps even at the picnic today, with his little brother present.
He’d been holding on to the ring for a while now anyways.
Tumblr media
The ring on your finger sparkles in the early morning sun. A whole year has passed, once again May 10th has arrived. Kyojuro turns twenty one today. Similarly, it marks one year since he asked you to marry him. You began clipping the fresh laundry, humming softly as you worked. Unlike last year, Kyojuro wasn’t home. He’d been sent on a mission, apparently many people had gone missing while riding a particular train. Knowing Kyojuro, if all went well, he’d be home by this afternoon to celebrate this special day.
“I wonder if he’ll want to go on a picnic again…” you hadn’t planned this day out like you did last year. The surprise party with the other pillars had turned into an engagement party as well. You smiled thinking back on that night, you wanted to go back so bad. You’d never seen Kyojuro smile that much, eyes sparkling in wonder like a small child trying candy for the first time. But, since he was on a mission, you figured taking the day to relax and spend time with one another was for the best. You could always go out with friends some time later in the week.
You’re soaking in the quiet morning, surprised you don’t hear birds chirping or the frogs croaking down by the pond. Rather, it seems everything has gone still, only a slight breeze rustling the leaves of the trees around you. The morning dew wasn’t as prominent as it had been last year, though you didn’t mind your feet being dry. Humming still, you picked up your half empty basket and made your way around to the other side of the drying line. The gentle flapping of a crow had you stopping in your tracks. “Oh, he must be on his way back…” you smiled at the thought.
You watched the crow land on top of the drying line’s pole, waiting for Kyojuro’s message. But, the words the crow uttered had your laundry basket slipping from your grasp. The basket tipped as it hit the ground, damp laundry spilling into the grass as you fell to your knees. Violent sobs shook you to your very core, lungs threatening to collapse as all oxygen was pulled from you. The morning that had been so unusually silent was now filled with your blood curdling screams, tears spilling down your cheeks in rivets. Kyojuro had left the world the same day he had entered it.
Never quite making it to twenty one.

Little Lion Man
Synopsis: Kyojuro messed things up. He said things he didn't mean. Can he fix things with you? (She/her pronouns)
Warnings: angst, cursing
He knew he'd messed up. He saw it in her face. As soon as the words left his mouth, she went dead silent. Her mouth opened slightly, and her eyes welled up with tears.
She had run out of his house then, taking nothing with her. He hadn't seen her since.
Rengoku knew exactly where she was. That didn't change the fact that she refused to see him.
Rengoku sighed sadly. He walked to the front door, clipped his sword and sheath to his belt, pulled his sandals on, and tugged his cape onto his shoulders. He had a hashira meeting to attend.
Something felt...off.
Suddenly, it hit him, harder than any blow. Rengoku had been waiting for her to say goodbye.
But she wasn’t there.
He forced himself to walk out of his house, down the steps, along the stone path, and down the road towards the meeting.
As the sun reached its highest point in its path across the sky, Rengoku arrived at the mansion. He looked around, checking to see if anyone had arrived. Rengoku was alone. Knowing that the other hashira would soon arrive, he forced a smile onto his face.
Silently, the mist hashira appeared several feet away from him. The sound and insect hashiras were next to approach, making small talk as they walked into the garden. The other hashiras trickled in and began to mingle, sharing the latest news about missions and other trivial topics.
After a few minutes of catching up and socializing, the master of the mansion stepped forward, aided by his guides. The hashira meeting passed in a blur. Rengoku spoke robotically when asked questions, and remained silent otherwise.
Soon enough, the meeting concluded. Some lingered, while others (namely the water, mist, and wind hashiras) ran off to complete the next mission.
Rengoku was about to leave as well, when Mitsuri approached him.
"She wants to see you," Mitsuri stated bluntly. "Come to my estate."
She walked away, then paused, beckoning for him to follow. Rengoku took a few hesitant steps in her direction. Mitsuri took that as an answer, so she walked away in the direction of her estate, Rengoku trailing behind.
The silence was suffocating.
The whole trip to the Love Estate, Rengoku worried. He tried to come up with an apology, but he had no idea of how to fix things with her.
Before Rengoku knew it, they reached the estate.
"Wait here. I'll go get her," Mitsuri instructed.
Five painfully long minutes elapsed. The sun began to slip below the horizon. The sliding front door opened slowly.
Rengoku felt as if all the air had just been knocked out of him. There, in the doorway, stood (Name). He noticed how her eyes were slightly puffy and red from crying. Dark circles underneath betrayed a lack of sleep. Her shoulders were slightly slumped, and her face, normally bright and cheery, was downcast. She looked utterly defeated.
"Love, I'm so, so, sorry. I never meant what I said. I should never have taken my frustration out on you, because it was not your fault but mine," Rengoku said.
(Name) stood there, listening but not responding.
"And it was your heart on the line. I really fucked it up this time. Didn't I, my dear?" Rengoku continued.
"Yes, yes you did," (Name) spoke sadly.
"If you never want to see me again... I... I understand. If you say, I will leave and never come back. But... I really hope that you will forgive me," he finished.
The sun finally set, and the moon rose, illuminating the garden-and (Name)- in a silver glow. Rengoku turned to leave.
Suddenly, he felt a hand grab his wrist. "Please, stay...my little lion man."
A/n: this whole fic was based off of the song Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons. I really loved writing this. Felt tears coming to my eyes as I wrote...

chapter 1 | chapter 2 | (ch3-10 coming soon!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you're sure that all your perfect stars were aligned when you met him.
Tumblr media
"A party?" You mumbled, straightening out your now fixed haori as you looked at your kasugai.
"Master Ubuyashiki has prepared a feast for the hashira for their outstanding work!" The crow chirped, opting to sit on your shoulder as you folded your haori, stretching your legs and leaning back on the tatami floor.
"Sorry for yesterday, Karase," you said to your crow as she chirped, which you thought of as an apology accepted.
"I could see this party going down for so many reasons, plus hashiras out of work?" You grumbled to yourself.
"Oyakata sama must have something in his mind."
"Alcohol!"
"There's alcohol present too? Wow, I'm pretty sure we all are going to pass out."
Being demon slayers most of you didn't indulge in any type of alcoholic beverages for most of the year, there were some exceptions but most of you highly refrained from drinking, the party could be fun but you couldn't help feel trepidation, no hashira at work? Not a single one?
"When is the party anyway?"
"In an hour."
"IN AN HOUR!"
Your crow flew off again.
"You aren't very fast! Are you?" You scoffed, you could swear that your kasugai was giggling, even if crows can't really giggle.
You sighed as you fervently rummaged through your closet, should you just wear your uniform? Or would that be too weird? It wasn't as if you didn't have a life outside of the corps! It just... seemed like that.
You rummaged through your seven pairs of uniform and ten pairs of casual clothes, of which several were worn out because you wore them at home... did you really not have a life?
Maybe you should invest your hard earned money on clothes instead of cinnamon.
You looked at the time,
"I'm gonna be late, aren't i?"
You fervently threw on a decent white kimono covered with yellow and red flowers while managing your very very wild hair.
Somehow you got ready in fifteen minutes and stepped out of the house.
"Where is the party, Karase?" You asked your prankster crow as she peered at you.
"The sound hashira's house!"
"You're sure Oyakata sama planned our vacation and not Uzui san?" You asked, your brows furrowed.
"Oyakata sama was the one who planned it, for sure!"
Ren...Rengoku again?
You whipped your head towards the sound of his voice as you saw him laughing, "Hello l/n kun! Are you well now?"
You eyes widened as you noticed his apparel, draped in red kimono, his cloth was full of swirls of golden and yellow leaves with black cuffed sleeves, his hair tamed and collected into a low ponytail as you shamelessly gaped at him.
"Is there something on my face?" he asked, his brows scrunching slightly as he tried to register your expression.
"No- NOT AT ALL," you cried out, mentally slapping yourself for staring at him for too long, "I- I just never saw your hair tied back."
"Oh? Does it look bad?"
You eyes flickered along his golden ones, a smile twitching on your lips as you grinned, "Not at all, you look very cool!"
The tip of his ears and cheeks reddened as he blinked rapidly, did he get you to smile like that?
He should say something, compliment you on how your kimono complimented the undertone of your skin, how your eyes twinkled under the sun rays or rather how neatly your hair was done— but you had turned around, the moment had passed.
"Did Uzui san tell you about the party? You both are rather close," you asked, calming down your nervous and shy jitters as you managed to look ahead at the road, you knew you won't be able to converse with him if you look at him.
"Surprisingly no, I hadn't had a chance to talk to him for weeks," he replied honestly as he looked at your figure leading the way to the said hashira's house.
Rengoku had walked this path many times before, he didn't need any guide or whatsoever, but whatever you were doing was making him happy, so he didn't ask you to slow down.
Walking with you was better, he quite liked your company.
"Were you running late for the party too?"
His face flushed again as he looked away from you for a second; for someone who was known to be very punctual, this tardiness didn't suit him at all.
"I was," he said in a rather soft voice, "Though I was sure I would make it in time if I make a run for it."
You realised he hated calling the cabs.
"Why not call the cab?"
"And waste an opportunity to exercise?"
Or he was just very passionate.
You looked back at him, "Am i slowing you down?" You asked with guilt laced in your voice as you looked forward, "If you want we can still make a run for it, I am a hashira too—"
"No! You already overwork yourself, I am not letting you not rest on a rest day," Rengoku retorted, his strides widening as he easily caught up to you.
"You aren't slowing me down, l/n kun, I feel honoured to walk with you."
Did this guy ever blink?
You smiled slightly, "What's so honorable in walking with me?" You asked, playing with the sleeves of your kimono as Rengoku held your hand to help you cross the road. Your heartbeat fastened, he knew you could easily cross the road, hell you're a hashira! You could easily do any normal thing. But, you being a hashira wasn't an excuse for him to not be gentle with you.
"Shinobu would have chomped your ears off if you had tried to help her," you giggled, causing Rengoku to shiver at his imagination. "she would have," he agreed letting go of your hand,
Hold it again please.
"I'm glad I'm walking with you."
You could only hum and smile at the male bashfully as he grinned at you.
You both were the ones flirting, right?
Tumblr media
"You're late."
"Not by much!" You retorted as Uzui grinned at you and Rengoku, not opting to remark on why you both were together.
"Well whatever, alcohol is there," he pointed to the distant corner of his very huge garden, "and food is there."
"Why are food and alcohol so far away?"
"I don't want to handle your drunk asses," he said; you could see his admittedly very pretty wives trying to serve hashiras with refreshments.
"Fair enough," Rengoku said as he walked further, his eyes very very set on the food.
"That was a rare sight," Uzui said, his lips widening into a smirk as you flinched.
"What do you mean?" You asked, being well aware of what he meant.
"You and Rengoku; I thought it was only Mitsuri and Obanai."
"It's not like that!" You retorted as you put your hands in the air, "We just met each other on the way!"
"So you aren't dating?"
"Not a chance," you replied, feeling a little disheartened.
"What a shame," the elder man said, turning to the direction of the party, "You don't look as flamboyant as me but still," he grinned back at you, "You look pretty today."
"Am I ugly otherwise?"
"I did NOT mean that, you just look depraved of food and sleep usually, you've rested well, that's good," he smiled at you as you followed him towards the party, not before noticing Rengoku devouring some type of meat and complimenting one of Uzui's wives (her name was Suma?) for the food.
"Glad that you could make it Y/N-san!"
"Thank you for hosting us, Hinatsuru-san," you smiled at the pretty lady who pushed a glass of sake in front of you, "Have fun!"
You looked around at the scene of the party; Uzui was trying to get Rengoku to slow down; Sanemi and Shinobu were into a deep conversation you had no idea about. Himejima san was snatching alcohol away from Muichiro and passing him an orange juice as Obanai looked at everyone annoyed, while Mitsuri tried to make him smile.
This is the closest to peace you all can have, isn't it?
Your gaze flickered towards the corner of the garden, where the water pillar sat alone with a drink in his hands.
Your heart throbbed, even you weren't that introverted.
You sauntered towards him, trying to keep him a company.
"Giyuu san," you called out, sitting in front of him.
"l/n," he nodded at you, his eyes softer than before.
"What are you doing?" You asked.
"Drinking."
You smiled at him, you knew that he was severely misunderstood, but who wouldn't misunderstand him if he gives them this sort of answer.
"Do you like it here?"
"Sanemi asked me to not be a buzz-kill so I'm sitting here."
You internally cringed as you looked at the wind hashira who was still engrossed in his conversation with Shinobu. He didn't have to be so mean.
"Don't think too much about it, you're fine, Giyuu san."
"I suppose... I should say thankyou."
"Well done!" You grinned at him, suddenly aware of the numerous stares on you both as you paid them no heed; Giyuu was known to be arrogant afterall, but not many of his rumours were true.
"How are you doing? I heard you got wounded," he asked, his eyes on you as you shuffled nervously.
"I wasn't particularly wounded! I was just... Burnt out, too exhausted to move, I didn't have any injury," you said, scratching your nape out of embarrassment.
"Why didn't you visit the butterfly mansion?"
"Well, i didn't see any need for it— it wasn't as if I was wounded and many others had to be treated with more priority," you replied, embarrassed out of your wit's end.
He gave you a disapproving glance, "Urokodaki san wouldn't like that."
"Hey! I sincerely didn't think that I required it!" You retorted as you sneezed, your body accepting the allegations you were trying to deny.
Giyuu passed you his handkerchief.
"Get a check up at the mansion soon, alright?" He said, his gaze averted to the empty glass sitting in front of you both.
You gave him a small smile; you had first met Giyuu three months before his final selection at Urokodaki's hut. He was your senior at the previous Water hashira's house. But, all your ties were cut after you had cultivated your own breathing style. It hurt you to see him being so painfully misunderstood, because you knew that he cared. He cared in his own way.
Yet when you see the Giyuu in front of you and the Giyuu you remember, there's a vast difference.
How could there not be?
You won't pry for his well being though, you don't need to. You suddenly remembered to write to the old man Urokodaki, you would soon.
"I will, Giyuu san," you replied, leaning back on your chair.
"l/n?"
"Yes?"
"What if... you come across a demon that doesn't kill humans?" Giyuu asked, his gaze still fixated on the empty glass.
"What? That's impossible, isn't it? A demon not wanting to eat human flesh?" You laughed, but something in Giyuu's demeanor made you think that it wasn't a joke.
"Only Muzan can do that right?" You asked, more alert than before as you tried to keep down all the foreign voices at the party.
". . ."
"Giyuu san," you said, your eyes squinting, "Did you see someone like that?"
"l/n, i-" the water hashira looked at you, he seemed uncomfortable, "there's a new demon slayer—"
"y/n kun! What are you doing sitting with Tomioka san all alone? Hasn't he bored you to death by now?"
You whipped around to see Shinobu grinning at you as Sanemi scoffed at the water pillar.
"Well— he hasn't. He's alright."
"Tomioka san, you shouldn't try to seem likable!"
"...people don't dislike me."
"Oh wow! Do you seriously believe that?" Shinobu gasped as you looked at Tomioka, you couldn't ask him for an explanation now— he looked too uncomfortable even in front of you to open up right away, it wouldn't be nice if you make him unload his baggage in front of everyone.
"Don't bully him, Shinobu," you nudged your friend as she grinned at you, "What do you need?" You asked with a smile.
"Has Tomioka's language skills rubbed off on you," she retorted as Sanemi rolled his eyes, "Well whatever, let's us all drink; This party exists so that we can strengthen our bonds and take a break, we should honor Oyakata sama's wishes."
"You should join us too, Tomioka san, even though it's not really required—"
"He will join us," You answered on Giyuu's behalf as you pulled him at front.
"She said it isn't required—"
"It is." You shut him up.
"Alright."
You all gathered at the huge table at the centre of the garden, Uzui sat at the head's seat while Rengoku sat just in front of you, he passed you a smile which you happily returned.
"Oh y/n kun! You look pretty," Mitsuri gasped as she looked at you. You blushed.
"Thankyou so much."
You felt Obanai's glare. Was it too hot today?
"Let us all drink and get to know each other well!" Shinobu announced as she beamed at others— she looked so passive aggressive at times—
You weren't against the idea, but was it safe for all of you to become drunkards? Plus, there was Muichiro.
"That excluded you, Muichiro kun, you shall eat rice," Himejima pushed a bowl in front of the boy's place. At least one problem was solved.
You were still astounded at the fact that everyone actually attended the party, although it was master's order.
"Are we sure we should all drink?" You voiced out. "We have to return back to our homes and prepare for our next mission— should we drink at all?"
"You worry too much, y/n-kun!" Shinobu smiled at you, "Uzui san, Rengoku san and Shinazugawa san all can hold their liquor— Kanroji kun isn't even affected by it. We will be fine! Plus we all have exceptional tolerance."
You reluctantly nodded at the insect pillar.
"Though, I am not sure about Tomioka san, did he ever drink with his friends before?"
"I haven't."
YOU SHOULDN'T ADMIT THAT!
"Ah... Poor Tomioka san..."
"I am not poor..."
Yeah, you couldn't help him anymore.
Your eyes flickered towards Rengoku from Giyuu who was already eyeing you intently as an unknown blush crept up to your cheeks, yet you couldn't help but notice that, Rengoku was also staring at the handkerchief in your hands, very intently too.
Tumblr media
Turns out you can't actually hold onto your liquor and it's pretty easy to get you drunk— along with Mitsuri.
Somehow you're sitting next to Rengoku now, as Obanai sits in your previous place between Mitsuri and Giyuu. Uzui shamelessly made out with his wives while Muichiro and Shinazugawa talked to Himejima, you could barely make out Giyuu and Shinobu quarreling on something.
But despite this admittedly exciting background, you could only focus at Rengoku.
"Did i tell you that you look very handsome today, Rengoku san?" You giggled as you laid your head on the table, looking up at Rengoku as he beamed at you.
"Hmm yes! Today! Before the party!"
"Did i now?" You pouted, covering your face with your hands, "Can I tell you again?"
"Haha! You may," he smiled at you, his heart racing because of your cuteness, how could someone as strong as you come off as such a little fluffball?
"But, i don't think you like me!" You pouted, smashing your face into the table as Rengoku tried to steady you.
His heart clenched, did he do something to make you feel that way?
"Why do you think that?" He asked, his voice quieter than before as you gazed up at him, "You didn't talk to me at the party even once!"
"Did i not? I'm sorry for that."
"You should be," you huffed as you leaned your head on his shoulder, making him blush slightly. "Don't be mean to me!"
"I promise I will not be," he smiled at your antics as you rested yourself on his shoulder, feeling more safe than ever. "l/n kun?"
"yes?"
"You look beautiful."
"Thankyou," you giggled as you closed your eyes, falling into a deep slumber.
Being with Rengoku always made you feel safe and secure, yes, you did fall asleep in front of him too much when you shouldn't— but did it matter? You were drunk and your crush was finding you adorable. You were on top of the world.
Shinobu's eyes fell upon you both as Rengoku's chest swelled with warmth, he loved it whenever you would get so vulnerable and light-hearted with him, it made him feel like you trusted him. Trusted him enough to show your inner child to him.
"It's cute how she fell asleep so easily after drinking," Shinobu said, her eyes on you.
Rengoku furrowed his brows, fell asleep easily? More often than not he had seen you dozing off earnestly.
"What do you mean?" He asked Shinobu as the insect pillar patted your head.
"She has acute insomnia because of her paranoia, it's hard for her to fall asleep usually— that's why I always urge her to visit for a checkup, but she rarely does," Shinobu said as she looked at Rengoku, "though the situation feels better now."
Rengoku's golden eyes flickered towards your figure which was half sprawled on him, his hands clutching your arm so that you don't fall as he tried to hide his smile, did you feel safe with him? He wondered as he got up from his seat, steadying your half limp body.
"I will get going," he announced to Tengen as the latter just nodded at him.
"Will you drop her off?" The sound pillar asked as he motioned towards your figure.
"Hmm. I will," Rengoku smiled at him as he picked you up gingerly, afraid of waking you up.
He called a cab as he placed you down on the seat, requesting the driver to drive slowly.
He chuckled as he saw you snuggling deeper into the seat, a small smile on your face as you lazily gazed up at Rengoku.
"Hehe, I like you very much, Rengoku san."
Tumblr media
The second time you had met Rengoku was two months after the final selection, at the foothills of a huge mountain where you laid severely injured as the yellow haired man scrambled towards you.
"Shit— it really is you, l/n," you could hear his loud voice as you tried to breathe softly, energy draining from your body as you saw the flame haired man patch you up.
He smiled at you when he saw that you were conscious, "Hey there! I never assumed we would meet this way."
"i hope we don't ever meet this way again," you could hear him say.
"Reinforcements..." You muttered out, your voice strained as the man tried to help you lay down.
"Don't sit up, you would lose blood that way!" He scolded as he laid you down, "and for reinforcements— the stone pillar was sent here when it was determined that the demon was a lower moon."
You looked around yourself, corpses of demon slayers laid out in the open ground as tears welled up in your eyes, you were so useless— so helpless against the strong foe.
"The stone hashira took care of the demon," Rengoku said as he helped you sit up after patching your wound at your stomach. You saw a wound on his shoulder, blood seeping from it.
"You're hurt," you whispered, you hand on his arm as he smiled at you, "Himejima sama was fast, I didn't get hurt badly."
You nodded as you leaned your head back, trying to relax.
You remembered that a number of demon slayers were sent behind the demon, numerous of lower classes trying to make up for a lack of hashira as you winced in pain.
"You're strong," you said, your eyes on Rengoku as you saw his eyes widening slightly, "Not really, I was useless against the demon," he said, his smile unfaltering.
"I have to train a lot more," he said, crouching in front of you.
"At least you were able to give him a fight," you muttered, looking down at your hands as Rengoku's hands went up to your face, he levelled your chin up to look at him as he said, "I knew you would make it out alive. You know why?"
"... Why?"
"Because you're strong too," he smiled at you as he turned out, his back facing you, "come now, get on."
"What?"
"Let me take you to the butterfly mansion," he grinned at you as you smiled at him. Grateful for having a friend.
It had only been a few months and Rengoku had gone up from Mizunoto to Kanoe; while you were still a Mizunoe. It was embarrassing but you were alright, you would train harder to get on to the same level as him. He was the motivation you needed in this cruel world, even if you didn't register it yourself.
While you dreamt happily, Rengoku was stuck in a dilemma as he held you in his arms in front of your house. You weren't waking up at all, should he break into your house? Or should he take you as a guest to his family mansion?
He heard you mumbled some incoherent sentences against his chest as his heart swelled, along with a little guilt. He couldn't help it, could he?
He moved towards his house with you in his hands.
He would keep you away from his father's gaze and take care of you in his own house, until you wake up.
He cursed at himself as he admired your soft figure, how was he to stay strong when you were so cute in his arms?
Tumblr media
When you woke up in a different room than yours you groaned at yourself, were you a nuisance to sound hashira last night?
Bracing yourself for incessant snarks from Uzui, you readied yourself before stepping out of the admittedly pretty and traditional room.
But, you were met with a different entity entirely, a little boy with very similar looks to Rengoku as your eyes widened.
"Senjuro kun?" You asked, your mind racing as you tried to figure out just what you did last night— but, it was all a blur, any memory after the sound hashira's house was a total blur.
Also, this permeating headache was nearly killing you.
"l/n san! Good morning," the boy smiled at you as he passed a tray towards you, you felt queasy looking at the food as you swore you wouldn't drink anymore.
"Good morning," you muttered out, your throat dry as you realised just how horrible you must be looking, should you really step in Rengoku's mansion like this? The thought of your physical condition made you more sick, you didn't care about the way you looked in front of Uzui— he was honestly like a big brother. But, Kyojuro Rengoku was another deal—
"This is for your hangover, you will feel better after this," the boy said as he passed you the fluid and you drank it in a gulp.
"That wasn't very tasty."
"It isn't supposed to be," Senjuro laughed at you as he took the dish from your hands, "you must have drunk a lot for nii-san to carry you here."
"You're telling me Rengoku carried me here?"
"Precisely."
"Wow, i must be such a burden."
"I don't think he felt the weight."
"Did you- did you just affirm that I am a burden?" You asked incredulously as Senjuro laughed at you.
You came to know Senjuro and Mitsuri because of Rengoku, yet— yet, you were closer to them than Rengoku. In the past, you had a habit of running away whenever Rengoku approached you, so that wasn't a surprise.
"I should go and say sorry, shouldn't i?" You said as Senjuro shrugged, "Someone made you hangover drink."
"Thankyou, dammit!"
"Mention not."
"Where is he?" You asked the boy as he smiled, "I think he just went towards the market to prepare for his mission."
"He has a mission today?"
"That's why he didn't drink yesterday," Senjuro said as he pulled a broom out of nowhere and went towards the garden.
"I would advise you to hurry to meet him before he actually steps into the market, you won't get to talk to him after that."
You rushed out of Rengoku's mansion but, really... You were late, or the hashira was too fast as you panted outside your house.
Your home was closer to the market than Rengoku's, so if he was returning anytime soon, you would meet him in front of your house.
"Oh? l/n!"
His loud voice boomed around your house as you smiled at him, waving at him sluggishly as he trotted towards you.
"Are you alright?" He asked, a smile on his face.
"I am, thanks for carrying me yesterday."
"It's no problem!"
"And sorry for being such an inconvenience—"
"You weren't," he cut you off as you noticed a change in his glances towards you, were you still dreaming?
"I- did I do anything weird yesterday?" You asked, playing with your cuffs as you looked at him bashfully.
"Haha! Not really, you were just singing some sappy songs on the way, do you not remember?" He asked, his glare more demanding than before.
"I was?" You squeaked as you looked at him, embarrassment flooding your cheeks, "I-I am sorry, I don't remember anything of yesterday," you admitted.
"oh... I see."
Did something happen yesterday? Did you say anything?
"It's alright, l/n, you were nice to me even when you were drunk," Rengoku smiled, he didn't lie— he hated lying, but half-truths weren't lies right?
"Yet again sorry—"
"It's alright, you didn't mean it... you didn't mean anything."
Something in his words made you snap into reality more than before as you looked at the food in his hands.
"Oh right, today's your mission right? When are you leaving?" You asked as Rengoku looked at the food in his hands momentarily.
"I will be leaving tonight," he said, "Something about frequent disappearances at the mountain, I hope it's not a demon."
You hummed at affirmation as you looked at his golden eyes, which ignited certain spark in your heart.
"Rengoku san?"
"yes?"
"When you return, can I treat you to a meal?" as a date, you wanted to add but you couldn't.
But, the flame haired smiled widely at you, as if just the offer was enough to fill warmth into his heart.
"Sure l/n kun, I will look forward to it!"
"Take care... Rengoku san," you said as a slight blush graced your features.
He looked at you in sheer silence for a while as he raised his hand to pat your head, full adoration in his voice as his eyes crinckled, "I will, l/n kun. Promise me you will take care of yourself too?"
You smiled, "I will."

rengoku possibly burst his eardrums when he was fighting the lower moon 2 for his position as a hashira— that's why his voice is too loud lol.
as far as I remember, when shinjuro stepped down as his position as a hashira rengoku went into a hashira meeting unannounced on behalf of his father when he wasn't even a tsuguko! thus, he had to kill a lower moon asap to become a flame hashira and step in his father's position!

I thought maybe you could love me like you used to. Even though I'm... different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Genre: Angst
Prompt: you were sent on a mission to kill an upper moon but unfortunately did not return leaving everyone to assume you were killed on that mission. three years later your s/o is sent in a mission to kill a demon wreaking havoc on a small village, how will they react when they find out that demon is you? And how will they react if you ask them if they could still love you?
Tl;dr: Kny characters reacting to you being a demon/ asking them if they could still love you even if you’re different
Giyuu
- The day you were presumed dead was the day Giyuu felt like a part of him had died as well, you were everything to him, the first good thing he had in a long long time
- Before meeting you Giyuu hated everything including himself and he hated seeing another day but once you were in his life, you made him want to continue living and he truly believed he would have a bright and happy future with you
- He couldn’t accept your death and move on, he grieved for you from sun rise to sunset and would constantly wish it was him that was sent on that dangerous mission instead, that it was him that had died not you
- Giyuu has always been extremely good at controlling his emotions, always carrying a blank expression to hide his true feelings
- But now, with you who he thought was dead, standing in front of him pupils now like slits, innocent human blood on your hands, face, as well as on your fangs and claws that were not there before
- He couldn’t hide his utter shock, his whole body shuts down and he looks at you eyes widen, and mouth slightly agape trying to piece together what he was seeing, he let his guard was down, if Giyuu wasn’t the love of your life you could have easily killed him
- He feels hurt and confused because the person who he was grieving everyday for was in fact alive but was the thing he hated most in this world
- You use this moment to explain everything that happened, from the day you were sent off on the mission to the moment you were turned into a demon adding emphasis on how you tried to control your killing urges for the longest time but failed
- He listened, or rather stayed completely silent through the entire thing, his face still in shock and his eyes constantly scanning your body mainly your claws and fangs to see if his eyes weren’t playing tricks on him
- You end it off with asking for forgiveness and if he could still love you like he used to even if you were… different
- When he heard those words he snaps out of his haze ,for a minute he sees you, the human version of you no claws, fangs, blood and no slit pupils, just you
- Giyuu had lost so many important people including you in his life and he would do anything if he could just spend five more minutes with them, hold them one last time and now in a way he’s giving that chance
- His heart sinks and his facial features soften , he looks like he’s on the brink of tears. He quietly calls your name and reaches out with his hand to touch yours
- However he quickly pulls away when your finger tips were only an inch away
- If he were to be honest he does think he would still be able to love you…. even as a demon but he wishes you didn’t spill blood during your time as one
- Giyuu would have took you in if your hands were still clean even if it meant breaking corps rules, even if it meant having to go into hiding away from other slayers, even if it meant putting himself in danger for trying to take care of you. He would do it all if it meant he still had you
- But it wasn’t that way….you were a threat and he has no other choice but to kill you it was his job after all
- He takes a step back from you not because he’s afraid but because he needs to collect his thoughts
- Once he does he tightly grips his sword and his face goes to the cold blank one he always seems to carry but never used on the old you
- He is able to look you dead in the eyes and say no, his icy blue eyes shooting like daggers into you
- With an emotionless tone he says he could never love a murderer before going in for the kill
- He does it smoothly and quickly your head was cut off one time
- He would stand there and wait until your body completely vanished but even when you were gone , Giyuu still felt this intense sadness for you, that part of him that left when he thought you died was still gone
- He didn’t feel closure, despite you becoming a demon there was a small part of him that still loved you so he decided to take your haori adding a piece of the fabric to the one he was wearing so he could always keep you with him
Kyōjurō
- Like with Giyuu he is extremely shocked by this, seeing you his s/o now a demon, his enemy
- Kyōjurō can’t help but pause and just stare, a million thoughts enter his head at once
- He thinks back to the day he found out you “died”, how he was extremely heartbroken and how it took him a long time to get back on his feet
- He thinks about when he finally did come to terms with your death how he’s been trying his best to keep your name alive by constantly talking about you and your brave work as a demon hunter
- But now he feels betrayed since this entire time he’s been trying to keep the name of a murderer alive
- He knows he shouldn’t blame himself since he didn’t know of this, but he can’t help but feel upset with himself for praising you all while your were taking away innocent lives he felt as though he was disrespecting your victims and victim’s families
- He finally snaps out of his daze and is pulled from his thoughts when you call his name you were concerned as to why he hasn’t said a word since he found you
- He shakes his head and curses at himself for losing focus in the middle of a battle
- He is a highly trained demon hunter he isn’t supposed to space out especially in front of a demon
- Yes… he is already labeling you as a demon and not as the human he once loved
- The reason why he is already convinced of this is because it is clear to him that you seem to still have some of your memories from your human life as a demon hunter and of him
- He thinks this because when he found you you didn’t attack and called out his name with teary eyes
- So he knows that you knew you were killing people but still didn’t stop yourself
- How he wished you didn’t, he wished that your mind was soiled and you remembered nothing of your human life even if it also meant not remembering him, then that way he could have remorse for you since you didn’t know what you were doing
- When you ask him if he could still love you like he use to even if you were different with tears streaming down your face
- He looks away unable to look you in the eyes , his eyes are downcast and you swear there’s a dullness to his usual bright red-orange eyes, his lips are formed into a frown opposed to being in the usual bright smile you loved so much
- He wishes he could hold you and wipe away those tears from your eyes he wishes he could still love you even as a demon
- But he can’t, he can’t love you even if he tried
- He feels guilty about the fact that he doesn’t have that fuzzy and warm feeling inside of him he always had whenever he looked at you, all he feels now is emptiness
- But he will admit those feelings did exist before, you were the love of his life once upon a time so he’ll give you this
- He opens his arms, signaling for you to come
- When you’re in his arms he squeezes you tightly as you cry apologizing for hurting all those people and he tells you he’s sorry too, sorry he no longer loves you, suddenly you feel like your entire body was heating up and you felt the sharp nichirin blade cut through your neck easily slicing your head off, you could feel your body slowly burn and turn to ash
- The hug wasn’t meant for who you were now but for who you use to be the sweet, kind, innocent human he loved and would sacrifice anything for
- He holds you close as you turn into ash basking in the last moments he has with you
- You’re happy he’s the last thing you feel before you die but the the same time heartbroken knowing that the person you loved most in the world didn’t feel the same

Overworked
Rengoku x F!reader
Genre: angsty fluff?
*Modern au*
Tumblr media
Kyojuro walked through the door after coming home from work, but noticing how you didn’t come to greet him when he walked in. He was slightly concerned but walked in the kitchen and saw Onigiri you made and left on the counter. “Did she make this for me?” Kyojuro thought.
He notices that the TV is still on, did you leave it on? Kyojuro was worried now as you never left the TV on if you weren’t in the room. He walked upstairs and into the bedroom and noticed your things on the bed, as if you’ve left your things then left somewhere. He walked into your shared home office and noticed you, slumped over on the desk sleeping. You worked in an office so you sometimes got very busy. Kyojuro knew that some nights you overworked yourself. He got your head off the desk so he can close your work program, making sure he saved everything. Then picked you up and to the bedroom. “My love why must you overwork yourself.”
Your rent went up so to help, you quit being a housewife and got a good paying job at the office and Kyojuro noticed how hard you’ve been working trying to help him. He wants you to understand that he can take of both of you with his job. But as you lay on the bed, Kyojuro sighs. He moves your thing to the floor as he joins you in bed, and pulls you in to cuddle and sleep.

The arrangement (Rengoku X Reader)-Capter 3
You made it back to the Rengoku Estate thankfully unscathed, only to be met with the voice of an angry voice that can only belong to the Rengoku patriarch within thirty minutes after your arrival. How will you handle his less than stellar introduction? Will you be able to stand such a brash man as your future father in-law?
Warnings: Mentions of Alcoholism, Arguments, Shinjurou is a bit of a jerk, and Cannon typical violence.
"What the hell's all that racket!" the youngest rengoku flinched at the booming voice that echoed from down the hall. You briefly glanced at Kyojuro who's vibrant carefree smile was replaced with an unsure and slightly embarrassed grimace.
"What are you not going to say anthi-" An older man stormed into the room before quickly cutting himself off apone noticing the unfamiliar presence. His face twisted in confusion before recognition quickly flashed in his clouded eyes.
"Rengoku-Sama, why don't you join us now that you're awake?" you gestured to the empty spot at the table with cool indifference in your tone making the older man flinch.
"Sure....I forgot you were coming today." He almost looked unsure as he settled between you and Kyojuro.
"We're sorry if we woke you, the boys and I were just talking. We may have gotten a bit carried away with the noise." You sipped your tea while looking at the Rengoku patriarch with a calculative gaze. You hoped being polite would deescalate the situation and would put the boys to ease. You didn't know what the situation was between the tree males, but the tension in the air was clear as day.
"I'll go get you a cup, Father." Senjuro quickly stood before scurrying off towards the kitchen, leaving the three of you in an uncomfortable silence.
"How was the trip?" The gruff voice of your father-in-law to-be eventually asked breaking the silence, pulling your eyes from the kitchen doorway to his scruffy form.
"It was alright. Rengoku-San, and I stopped for sweet potatoes in one of the towns on the way." You glanced at Kyojuro, who's eyes were wide in shock at the polite question from his father.
"Is that why you both returned so late?" he asked skepticism clear in his voice, as he raised a brow at you.
"Well, not entirely. There was a little mishap, but Rengoku-San handled it wonderfully." You said as you continued to sip on your tea, allowing Kyojuro to tell the story.
"We were attacked by a demon- well, two demons to be exact." He said bluntly, you nearly face palmed at his lack of elaboration.
"You were what?!" All your heads snapped to Senjuro, who seems to have returned with an additional cup and a platter of snacks. The poor boy appeared to have paled apone hearing his brother's words, and in the prosses of having an existential crisis, "Brother, why didn't you say anything sooner, you've been here for at least twenty minutes ?!"
Kyojuro couldn't seem to fight the blush that spread across his cheeks at this, "Well, you didn't ask...?" Senjuro sighed in exasperation and his small shoulders slumped; he clearly was not satisfied with his elder brothers' response, but not unuse to it seemingly.
"It's daylight out. How were you attacked by a demon?" Shinjuro stated after a moment of silence, disbelief clear in his tone.
"Well, it was in a very dense forest. Both demons also had blood demon arts that allowed them to teleport from place to place, so they were able to move rather freely." Kyojuro continued to explain what happened before remembering a key detail that he also found rather humorous and slightly admirable, "Oh, how could I forget?! (l/n)-San broke one of the demons' noses before I had the chance to behead it." The two other males practically choked on their tea before staring at you.
"YOU DID WHAT?!?! " Poor Senjuro looked as if he was ready to fall over at any moment, not knowing to deal with both you and his brother.
Shinjuro though, didn't seem all that concerned after a moment, "I shouldn't be surprised." He then continued drinking his tea, not elaborating any further.
'What did he mean by that?' It seems both the boys shared your confusion but chose not to verbalize such.
"Well, I'm going to head back to my room now. It's good to see that you both made it back safely." You all nod before Shinjurou stood and made his way down the long corridor. The moment you heard Shinjurou's door shut, the youngest Rengoku spoke lowly being clearly being mindful no to be heard, "Father seems to like you (y/n)." You raise a brow in in question before the boy then chose to add, "I've never seen him talk to a guest for so long."
"Ah, I see. Well, glad to hear I made a good impression on him." You grabbed the tea pot before poring yourself and then Kyojuro more tea after noticing his cup was nearly empty.
The young male gave you a nod of appreciation before speaking, "Thank you, and thank you for being polite with Father despite his less than...stellar introduction." The look of relief and gratefulness was clear on Kyojuro's face. You were surprised at the kindness he's shown you since your meeting earlier that day. "It's no problem. All he is a grumpy old man. There's no need for me to be hostile." You chuckled, and the boy joined in soon after before continuing your earlier conversation. Despite your initial dislike for the older man, you didn't see the point in treating him dryly before getting to know him more. How bad could he be?
Tumblr media
You stared at the ceiling above you, not thinking of anything in particular. The sound of birds and their annoying sweet melodies shook you from your sleep deprived daze. You'd hardly slept a wink the entire evening, the hundreds of thoughts you had swirled around relentlessly; making it impossible for you to get any proper rest. After a few hours, your mind grew far too tired to think anymore, and you laid in a haze for who knows how long.
'Guess I should get up and make myself useful.' You willed yourself to stand, ignoring the sweet call of your Futon, along with the protest of your limbs which felt as if they were filled with led. You found yourself making your way to the kitchen, then deciding to cook breakfast for everyone.
After searching through the many cabinets, the kitchen held, you found all the things you needed. You decided you were going to make a traditional breakfast, nothing fancy or shocking but filling all the same.
After a few minutes of cooking, you heard a door slide open and steps making their way towards the kitchen. Your chest began to tighten, and you found you were no longer tired, feeling as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over you. As the stepps grew closer you realized that you hadn't thought any of this through- you hadn't thought about how they may not want you in their kitchen, using their ingredients that they paid for. What in god's name where you thinking?
"(Y/n)-san, is that you?" A small, sleepy voice called out. Oh... it was only Senjuro, you felt your anxiety lessened greatly as you took in the boy's presence.
"Yea, it's me, I hope you guys don't mind, I made breakfast." The young boy directed his view to the pot of miso soup on the stove curiously.
"Oh! (Y/n)-San, you didn't need to wake up so early to make us all this food- not that I don't appreciate it, though!" The reassuring and grateful tone in his voice made you smile, and you couldn't stop yourself from reaching out and ruffling his fluffy fiery hair, "It's no problem at all, Kid. I wanted to." He playfully swatted your hand away before moving his head to peer at the ingredients on the counter.
"Can I at least help? I usually cook, so I can be useful!"
"You're the cook, but you're like 10?"
"I'm 12!" The look of minor offense that crossed the boy's face humored you greatly. The look of annoyance didn't suit his soft face.
"Okay, okay, you can help." As you laughed, you couldn't resist adding, "Need a stool or anything?" Earning you a glare and an equally quick remark from the youngest Rengoku.
"You're not much taller than me! So, you can't talk!" You chuckled before returning to stirring the soup.
"That's true, but shhhhh, we don't talk about that." The statement got a hearty laugh out of Senjuro, along with a small grin from of you.
"I'll clean and put the rice on."
"Sure, thank you, Senjuro-Kun." The boy hummed as he got to work, expertly cleaning the rice. As the minutes ticked by, and he put the rice on. You started to work on fileting the salmon you'd found in the icebox.
"The soup smells delicious (Y/N)! Do you like cooking?" The boy looked at you, curiosity shun in his vibrant orbs.
"I do, I find it to be rather relaxing. How about you? You seem to know your way around the kitchen pretty well." You pulled the last bone out of the fish, glad the tedious and your least favoret part of the process was on over with.
"Yes, I've always enjoyed cooking. I'm always trying to find a new recipe to try out." The boy continued to speak as you began to slice the fish.
"You know, I have a book full of desserts and pastry recipes. We can make something from it if you'd like."
The young boy's face lit up, excitement almost radiating from him, "I'd love to! Do you have a favorite recipe?"
"Not particularly, but I love the Chocolate Chiffon Cake. It's not too hard to make, and it tastes delicious." The thought of the chocolatey cake almost had your mouth watering. It'd been one of your favorite cakes growing up.
"I've heard of it, but I've never actually had it before. How is it made?" You begin to explain the desert to the curious boy as you began to cook the salmon.
"Wow, that dose sound delicious. We should make it! " The boy's enthusiasm was soon replaced with embarrassment that was also accompanied by a blush at his outburst, "well, that is if you would like too of course."
"Of course, I would like to Senjuro. Just let me know when you'd like us to make it alright?" The boys previous smile returns at your response.
"Alright, I will." A comfortable silence envelops you both as you pulled the salmon off the skillet and put a kettle on the burner in its place. You kept a close eye on the water's temperature, careful not to burn the tea leaves, before adding only a tablespoon or two of sugar to enhance the already natural sweet taste of the tea. You hoped this would placate Kyojuro's sweet tooth without having to give him too much sugar.
"Oh wow - the tea smells great!"
"It's all about the temperature in which you put the leaves in the water. If you put them in and the water isn't warm enough, you'll just be drinking leaf water; if the water's too hot, it'll taste bitter." You shut the lid of the kettle and allowed it to continue to brew as you and Senjuro set the table and place all the food down.
"The food looks incredible, (y/n)-San!" You were glad to see this excitement in the boy that seemed to be almost completely absent yesterday.
"You did a great job, Senjuro-Kun. You were a wonderful co-chef." The boys blush as you messed up his hair once more, almost making your cool expression slip as you held back a chuckle.
"Thank you (y/n)-San, but you did most of the work. I hardly contributed at all it wouldn't have made a difference whether I was here or not." His self-depreciating words made you frown slightly before you settled a light hand on his shoulder.
"Nonsense, great things are never done by one person." Your soft voice pulls him to look up at you. Seeing this causes a small smile to tug at the corner of your mouth. You could tell you were getting through to the boy, if only a bit.
"You have a pretty smile (y/n). "
His comment caught you off guard, though you didn't let it show as you patted his shoulder affectionately, "Thank you, Senjuro-Kun, no one's said that to me before." moments later, your attention was drawn to the sound of approaching footsteps coming from down the hallway, "I'll go get the tea." After you exited the room, you hear the cheery laugh of the eldest Rengoku son, "Good morning, little brother! I hope you slept well! Breakfast smells delicious!"
"Ah, thank you, Aniue! (Y/-oh, good morning, Father." The boy stumbles over his words, not expecting to see his father moving around early in the morning.
"Mornin." Senjuro was surprised at his father's response. It was still as short and gruff as always, but it lacked its usual bite along with his usually mannerless remarks. It seems Kyojuro was also surprised as he only stared owishly at their father, but his attention was soon drawn to you as you exited the kitchen, tea pot in hand, "Can't have breakfast without tea, now can we?"
You bow your head to the gentleman before seating yourself at the table between the oldest and youngest Rengoku's.
"Would you like tea, Rengoku-sama?" You gesture to his cup.
"Uh, yes, thank you." The man held out his yunomi cup and you gracefully poured the fragrant liquid into the beautifully painted ceramic piece, not spilling a single drop.
"How about you, Rengoku-San?" The young man smiled with a nod before holding out his cup as well.
"Thank you (Y/n)- San, it smells wonderful." You fight the blush that tries to appear on your face at the use of your given name.
"Thank you. I know you want some Senjuro, I saw you eyeing it earlier." The boy gave you a sheepish smile at your tease. You really needed to stop teasing the poor kid, but it was just too much fun.
"Th-that not true, I'm just thirsty, that's all!" the boy attempted to defend as you only hum as you poured the tea into his cup.
"Itadakimasu." You all prayed before digging into your food.
"Wow, Senjuro, this is delish!" Kyojuro complimented, mouth full of tasty food.
"Well (Y/N) did most of the work. I just did the presentation, really."
"That's not true. You made the rice and helped cook the soup. You did the presentation wonderfully as well." You pause for a moment before deciding to continue, "You should take pride in your accomplishments, Senjuro. Like I said earlier, great things are never done by one person."
You look up from your food when you heard the lack of a response, you look between the boys seeing a look of awe and determination on the eldest's face, "She's right, Senjuro, live with your head held high. You're capable of great things. Don't sell yourself short." Senjuros blush only grew as he nodded, "Your right Aniue, (Y/n). I'll think about what you've both said."
The look on the Eldest Rengoku pulled your attention from the two brothers. For a moment, the look it his eyes almost seemed regretful before being masked by a look of complete indifference as he grabbed his tea.
You watch as the Rengoku Patriarch breathed in the aromic smell produced by the tea before bringing the ceramic to his lips and taking a small sip of the liquid. As he pulled the cup away, the look on his face was unreadable, but you waited to hear what he had to say, you tried not to jump to conclusions.
"That... I haven't had tea like that since my early slaying days." The look of longing and a multitude of unknown emotions could be seen swimming in the man's eyes. The anger you held for the man cooled, and in that moment, it was replaced with sympathy. You could understand longing for things of the past.
"I'll make it for you whenever you'd like."
"I'd like that, thank you (l/n)-San." with the older males agreeable you noted how the boys seemed to share a sigh of relief and smiles spread aross their features.
"So (l/n)-San how did you become such a good tea maker?" The eldest son gave you an owlish look of curiosity, "or have you just always been talented in that regard?"
You contemplated your answer as you finished sipping your miso soup, "Well I worked in a tea house for a few years, and my father, before he joined the Corps was a tea maker, so I learned some tricks of the trade from him, you could say."
This seemed to peek Senjuros' curiosity, so he decided to join in on the conversation, "What made you want to follow in your father's footsteps?" You haulted brifly, not because you minded answering the boys innocent question, but because you could see their father was shifting uncomfortably.
"Well, I'll be honest, it was more out of necessity than enjoyment. I'd already had a grasp of how to make tea, and the owner needed help, so I guess it just worked out." The males all nod in understanding before the conversation was smoothly switched to another topic. Much to the Rengoku Patriarchs relief.
"Caw! Caw!" The sound of a crow interrupted your conversation before Kyojuro stood and opened a window just in time for a bird to quickly swoop in and landed on your shoulder, thoroughly surprising you, "Rengoku Kyojuro, Mission South, Southeast! Elderly men are going missing! Please hurry!" The bird remained on your shoulder unmoving as it spit out his orders.
"Understood. I'll leave as soon as possible. Did Master say how long the mission will take?" The determination on his face looked unshakable as he squared his large frame proudly. You'd never seen someone so eager to be called into work.
"The exact time frame is unknown, but he said to thank you for taking care of the demons along the trail for they had went undetected!"
"It was my pleasure, I'll leave as soon as possible! Yhank you, my feathered friend. Would you like anything to eat?" The bird seemed to look around the table before zeroing in on something on Shinjurous plate. your eyes widened and you tried to grab the bird, but it launched itself off of you. Narrowly slipping through your grasp, before darting towards the unexpecting man and swooping down to grab a piece of salmon off of his plate. Much to the older man's dismay, "Kyojuro! Get your damn bird out of my house!" The man yelled as he fended off the bird who quickly scoffed down the stolen food and was attempting to come back for seconds.
"Kaname, come here!" Kyojuro's firm tone had the crow complying with in seconds, abandoning its quest for Shinjuros salmon, "I asked if you were hungry, I didn't say to take food off of someone's plate now, did I?"
The crow looked ashamed as he looked down, trying to avoid eye contact with his master, while simultaneously nudging his hand wanting his affection dispite the scolding. Kyojuro's stern look melted almost immediately as he gave in and began to caress the crow's head.
You heard Shinjuro continue to mutter curses at the feathered creature under his breath. You almost wanted to laugh at how bent out of shape the older man was over the bird, but figured it was best not to agitate the man further like Kyojuro had warned last night.
"Would you like me to pack you some leftovers for the road Rengoku-San?"
"That won't be necessary (y/n)-San!" His booming voice rang through the room, though this time it didn't catch you off guard in the slightest.
"I insist, why waste perfectly good food? Go get ready for your departure. I'll go pack the food now." Kyojuro's mouth opened though he found himself unable to argue, as your point was valid. Seeing as you won the debate, you turned and made your way into the kitchen to prepare the slayers meal, leaving the three men in the dining room.
"I'm sure you'll enjoy the food, brother."
"I know I will, but she didn't even listen to my refusal?" The oldest brothers' confusion was clear.
Which earned a knowing chuckle from their father, "That's because it wasn't a question, Boy."
"But she asked, didn't she?" The young man looked between where you retreated to and his father confused.
"That doesn't mean a thing." The poor man looked even more confused as his younger brother patted his shoulder gently.
"I'm just going to go pack now." The young man walked away, clearly wanting out of the confusing conversation, leaving the youngest son and father together.
"Here's a piece of advice when it comes to women: they almost always say the opposite of what they really want."
Senjuro gave his father a confused look, not believing what he said to be true but letting him continue, "For example, if they're mad, they say to leave to them alone, right?" Senjuro nodded, not knowing where his father was going with this.
"Well, 70% of the time, they really mean they want you to stay and listen to them. Another example is what just happened. She was going to make him take the food either way. He really didn't have a choice, even if she asked."
"So, you're just saying listen to what women have to say, or I guess what they're not saying? Father, that doesn't sound right. Why wouldn't they say what they mean? Wouldn't that be easier?" The boy had never heard anything so absurd,
"Wait till you're older, and you'll see." His father let out a small chuckle. While Senjuro wasn't used to this side of his Father, he was glad to see the man in higher spirits. The boy knew it must have had something to do with your arrival, along with the older man, not having any sake that morning if his clean smell was anything to go by. He smiled at his father and hoped to continue to see this positive side of the man.
"All done, he should be set for lunch." You walked out of the kitchen wooden bento box covered in a floral furoshiki in hand.
"Thank you for packing him a meal. It's far better for him to eat a home cooked meal than the greasy food he usually gets from a street cart." A large gasp can be heard from the doorway the moment senjuro finished his critique.
"Senjuro, the food from the cars is tasty! How could you call their food greasy?" Kyojuro truly looked aghast as his brother staired at him plainly.
"Now, Rengoku-San, I agree that street food is delicious, but Senjuro is right that it's not as healthy as a home cooked meal." You handed the box to the larger man who excepted it immediately.
"I suppose you have a point. Don't mistake my earlier comment as ungrateful. I am appreciative of the meal you made." You nodded at the man who you notice is now clad in a slayer uniform, but something was off...
"Rengoku-San?" The man notices the confusion in your voice.
"Yes (y/n)-san, is something wrong?" he questioned.
"No, but your uniform is almost brown, and it has a special attachment for your haori..." Now it's his turn to be confused. What were you getting at?
"Yes, it does indeed!"
" It doesn't meet slayer guidelines. You're not allowed to change your uniform color. You can wear it differently and remove certain parts apone approval, but you can't add any features."
You suddenly hear a facepalm and a sigh of aggravation come from Shinjuro, "You foolish boy, you never told her, did you?" Kyojuro's eyes widened, and a look of suprise flooded his features.
"It just never came up, I forgot!" He fumbled over his words, and it looked like his father was about to respond before you interjected, not wanting to be left out of the loop any longer.
"Hold up, what are you two talking about? I'm so confused." the men's attention then turned to you.
"Hashira are allowed to customize their uniforms however they wish." You only stare at the taller man for a few moments, "So wait... you're a Hashira, one of the most powerful slayers of this generation?"
"That is correct." He nods in conformation.
"The haori... you're the Flame, Hashira, which explains the unusual hair and striking familial resemblance- I've heard stories about your family before, but I just never connected the dots."
"Well, I suppose now you know!" You could have sworn you'd seen his haori fly up as his voice boomed around the room before his crow who was standing by the door cawed and caught all of your attention.
It seemed you all forgot the small creature was there. Well, everyone, besides Shinjuro, who seemed to still be glaring daggers through the feathered creature.
"I should be going now. Thank you again for the lunch! I'm sure I will enjoy it!" You nodded as you all follow him out to the Engawa.
Senjuro was the first to speak one you made it outside, "Be careful, Aniue. I don't want to see you hurt."
"I promise you I'll be safe. You have no reason to worry!" His older brothers smile seemed to help Senjuro's worries lessen. You looked to Shinjuro, waiting for him to speak. After a moment, you realized he wasn't going to say anything.
"You have my best wishes, Rengoku-San. May things go in your favor." You hoped your words conveyed the sincerity you felt. While you didn't love this man, you held no ill wishes towards him. You truly hoped his mission would go smoothly.
"Thank you (L/n)-San..." Gone was Kyojuro's enthusiastic booming voice, replaced with something softer, as he didn't know what to say. There was no malice hidden within your voice, and your eyes only held sincerity.
Why were you doing this? First, you packed him lunch, and now you're sending him off while his own father refused to acknowledge the fact he was leaving for a mission. What did you have to gain? You were to be in a loveless marriage. You were suddenly thrust into living with three males with whom you've never met prior, and somehow, you still held a calm and thought spirit? What did you have to gain from kindness?
"Rengoku-San, are you alright?" Your voice shook him from his thoughts. Your relaxed features did little to hide to curious glint in your eyes as you gazed at him.
"Y-Yes, I'll be heading out now! I hope to see you all soon!" He ignored the heat that was rushing to his face as he turned around and quickly made his way out into the streets. Leaving you three behind on the Egawa.
"Well, I'm going to go clean up the mess." Senjuro spoke after a few moments of silence, and you nodded as the boy made his way into the house, leaving you and his father alone to watch Kyojuro leave.
You looked at Shinjurou, who's expression was almost unreadable at first glance, but as you looked closer, you could see the cracks, which revealed anguish, anger, and hopelessness as he stared off into the horizon after his eldest child.
"Rengoku-Sama, He'll be back, have faith in him." You tried to reassure the older man, but he didn't spare you a glance as he turned and opened the sliding door before halting, "Being a slayer is meaningless. You hardly live long enough to do anything meaningful, and if you do live long enough... you wish some demon would have put you out of your misery... He's a foolish boy who's doomed to wind up in an early grave."
You were shocked that he would say such a thing about his own son, "Your son is a Hashira, one of the strongest of his generation, and you doubt his capability? Why?"
The man only scoffed, "That title means nothing, especially not to a hungry demon! Their deaths were all meaningless. They were all too weak!"
Your calm exterior was beginning to crumble, as irrational rage began to bubble, "Watch your tongue, you clearly know nothing of honor... Those fallen slayers died in the name of justice. Don't discount their sacrifices due to your own self-pity." Your words seemed to surprise the man and enrage him even more, "How dare you disrespect me!" He took a step towards you towering over you, though you remained unmoved as you glared up at the larger man.
"Disrespect you? You want to talk about disrespect? Fine, we can talk about disrespect!" Your voice began to rise, and your fist began to clinch. You couldn't believe that this jerk had the audacity to lecture you about respect.
"Don't raise your voice at me, girl! You have no clue who you're speaking, too!" He shouted in your face.
"You think you scare me?" Your voice did little to hide your humor at his threat.
"Father... (Y/N), Please stop fighting..." A small voice whispered.
Alrighty and done editing that! What did you guys think? I wanted to add some comedic relief throughout the chapter before that ending, sorry if this chapter seemed like more of a filler because of that. I feel bad poor Senjuro had to overhear the fighting! I wonder how much he overheard? Speaking of him I plan on Senjuro to be a constant in this story because I feel I can't leave out such a big part of Kyojuro's character. (Let me explain) If you noticed in Kyojuro's dream on the train Senjuro was the main focus. As well as the fact Kyojuro's world outside of demon slaying probably revolved around Senjuro a fair bit. He most likely had to step up at a young age to help take care of the still toddler boy and be a good role model because their father was too consumed by his grief and alcoholism to do so. (This can be seen in him reassuring his little brother after Senjuro was upset at their father's rejection of Kyojuro's great achievement, and how he tells Senjuro he believes in him.) I believe this is why Senjuro turned out to be such a kind boy and selfless boy, because Kyojuro was there for him and instilled good values that their mother taught him into his younger brother. Let me hear your theories about things below! edited:8/4/23
