This was always one of my personal headcanons, because he was one of the rare ones who also remembered his name. He felt something like affility (or name it something else) when he saw Muichiro.

There are many more reasons, but Kokushibo always stayed true to himself and for what he wanted for himself, and that was to overcome his younger brother.

I said this before but I want to elaborate a bit. I genuinely think out of everyone in Muzan’s circle past and ‘present,’ that Kokushibo is the only one who retains most of his humanity, just not what you would think.

I think you can make a valid argument, looking at Akaza and Rui especially who have this backstory where they were once ‘good,’ that “no, if anyone can be swayed towards their true self it would likely be (and was) those two.” But I think that’s only really looking at one side of a coin. Being human isn’t just compassion and being loving and fair. It’s not just wanting to connect to others, Working to help other people when they’re down, etc. etc. it’s also … jealousy. And it can look like vanity and pettiness and a lot of other very negative things and it’s usually the combination of the positive and the negative, that makes people, people. Nobody’s perfect, but it comes down to choice and choosing to do right and the good news is that for a lot of people that’s just second nature. Yes, I’m an optimist.

And so with Akaza and Rui, who unknowingly even as demons retain a lot of motifs and personal drives from when they were human, we can look at them and say “Oh, they were under Muzan’s influence, he twisted what they were into something bad, so on and such—“ they get a pass because for them this is not their true character or their true motivations. I guess how if you think of a tree, you can prune and reshape the branches but the root is the same. You can’t really cut or change that or else the whole thing would die. At their root, Akaza and Rui have generally wholesome goals and beliefs but you’d never see that when you first meet them at ground level.

…But with Kokushibo, he never strayed from what he was and what he believed as a human. That was, this is his true character. And for the only upper moon who Muzan considers as a business partner, who yes, is strict in upholding the hierarchy and … sort of helping with Muzan’s master plan (?) he’s completely in a league of his own.

So I guess the reason I think he alone retains most of his humanity is because the choices he’s made in life based off of very real, human emotion are the guide to his moral compass even now. Muzan has nothing to do with it, there was no real pruning or reshaping involved with him. He’s the exact same person he was as a human. I’d go so far as to say Kokushibo’s loyalties lie with Kokushibo alone. He’s stubborn when it comes to what he sees as right and wrong. He still holds resentment and jealousy over what his brother was … in the bulk of the narrative, he’s still holding on to something that feels very human and even if those things and feelings aren’t pretty, they’re still there.

I think I burned out myself with several things which is why I have this huge writers block and this mental health issues.
