‘Walker’s Jared Padalecki Shares a Look at What’s to Come in Season 4
Collider: You’re four seasons into this TV series now, which isn’t the 15 seasons that Supernatural was on the air, but it’s a very respectable amount of time.
JARED PADALECKI: Thank you so much. Hopefully, we’ll have 40 more. But Season 4 is certainly bizarre and amazing and incredible, and I’m grateful and flattered and love the journey these characters have gone through.
What are you loving about Season 4 and about the Cordell Walker of Season 4? What are you most enjoying about this point of the journey?
PADALECKI: With Supernatural, we would flip between maybe the big bad guy and then the problems at home or with the brothers. But in the case of Walker, we will go from big bad guy to family stuff to bad guy of the week to family stuff. Just like life is, it gets big sometimes and it gets small sometimes, but there’s always some issue. And so, what I love about Season 4 is having a serial killer out there that is from our past and that haunted us back then and is sure to haunt us again this season, as The Jackal does, and also, there’s so much drama at home. Cordell has a daughter who’s a freshman in college and a son who’s a senior in high school. Mom and dad are trying to figure out what to do. His brother is trying to figure out what to do. It’s just that feeling that we all get, as humans and as adults, where it feels like, “Can’t just one part of my life calm down?” And sure as hell, it never does.
It feels like this show was originally brought back to television because there was a real hole in this type of programming at that time, and I’m glad the series is still on because it still feels like it’s really needed in that space.
PADALECKI: Agreed. What’s funny is that I grew up in Texas. I grew up in San Antonio. I’ve lived in Austin for 15 years. I grew up watching Walker, Texas Ranger with Sir Chuck Norris, himself, so that was a part of my childhood. For those who’ve seen the original and seen ours, this is obviously a very different show. I’m certainly a fan of action movies and action shows and action books and action stories, but I found myself, after 15 years on Supernatural, which was very much based in family as well, wanting something that anybody of any age could watch. I wanted something that wasn’t just about cutting off vampires’ heads, or killing God or the devil and everything in between, but was more like, “How can we make this as realistic as possible to what’s going on right now, and what has gone on in the past, and what is sure to go on in the future?” The commentary is oftentimes about how people have seen the original and love the re-imagining that we Walker put together. But more often than not, I love that I’ve had parents come up to me and talk about how Walker, though the situation is different because he’s a widower, is going through life and trying to figure out his kids while they’re changing, and he has to go to work because he has a job. There’s something universal about that struggle and that experience that seems to have really communicated and landed with people, no matter what their job is and what their family situation is.
Is it challenging to make this series with a shortened episode count, or does it feel like you can really just pack more into every episode?
PADALECKI: I get both. There’s a quote I heard one time about actors and writers and directors and producers and whatnot, and they used it in the form of an actor. They said, “If you give an actor three years to prepare, it’ll take three years. If you give him three months to prepare, it’ll take three months. If you give him three days, it’ll take three days. If you give him three minutes, it’ll take three minutes.” It’s one of those things where life imitates art. We’ve found such wonderful stuff, and kudos to our great writing team for making it possible, but it feels very like life. It feels very much like Cordell’s life would be. You find out sooner than you would’ve hoped, “Hey, this is coming up,” or “You’ve gotta do this or that.” While it’s certainly been different, if you could give me 30 days to do an episode, it’ll have its challenges. If you give me one day to do an episode, it’ll have its challenges. I think that goes from top to bottom, cast and crew alike. We’ve had a great time. Because of cross-boarding some episodes, we might be doing episodes one and two, and even if a character is only in episode two, since we will shoot two together, I still get to catch up with that human being during the filming, which is wonderful.
You’re kicking off this season with a lot of storylines happening for these characters. He’s stepped up his romance, his daughter is not coping well with things, and there’s a serial killer. I love that there’s really this balance where you have the romance and there are some good things on the horizon for the family, but then there’s also the dark and deadly aspect of a serial killer. What sort of balance will we see this season between the light and the dark? Will we get to a point where things get more dark and more intense, as things play out with The Jackal?
PADALECKI: You certainly will. Given what happened with the strikes, over the last 12 months, it didn’t make sense to do a direct pickup after Season 3. So much time has passed between the end of Season 3 and when Season 4 will air that it just didn’t make a lot of sense for our viewers and our lovely and wonderful loyal watchers. Kale [Culley] just turned 18 in May, and he’s almost my size now. If we picked up Season 4, episode one, directly after Season 3, the final episode, it wouldn’t make sense. You’d be like, “Oh, I guess August grew four inches overnight.” Our writers were very aware of that and tried to make every bit of that as real and human as possible. We certainly do see, as characters and as viewers, how this Jackal that haunted Captain James and Ranger Walker back in the day, five years ago, still has a stranglehold on them, and just how deep and dark they go while trying to keep all the other plates spinning in the other aspects of their lives.
It’s certainly never great to keep secrets from people you care about, especially when they’re big secrets. And on a TV series, those secrets are bound to come out, and likely at the worst possible time.
PADALECKI: Yep, that’s what our sadistic writers try to do. Teasing, teasing, teasing. No, they do it in such a wonderful way. Going back to before even the pilot, one of the things that Anna Fricke and I talked about before we’d even staffed the room and cast the characters and hired the crew was that we want this to be as real as possible. Although in a different arena, with Walker being a Texas Ranger and a widow, we want this to have universal problems and issues that every person goes through on different scales as they navigate this life.
Jensen Ackles directed an episode of the series. Do you think he’ll do that again?
PADALECKI: I sure hope so. Now and always, I will work with Jensen, wherever, whenever. He’s obviously a busy man. He’s got a wife and three kids of his own. He’s here, there, and everywhere. He’s been in Toronto, he’s been in Vancouver, and he’s been in New Mexico. He’s a very busy guy. He and I see each other a lot, obviously, with Supernatural conventions, and we text often. He certainly is up for it. It’s just like life and like Cordell Walker, trying to figure out when things will work out.
Do you see yourself directing an episode?
PADALECKI: Not to speak for Jensen, but to try to speak for Jensen, directing is something that he was always really passionate about, and producing is something that I was always really passionate about. I have a deep respect for directors, and the door is not closed. If the opportunity arises and I think, “Man, I really wanna direct,” then I will. But over 24 years in the industry, I’ve worked with so many talented directors who deserve the episode more than I do. Obviously, as the executive producer and the guy in the poster, I could probably make a phone call and say, “Hey, I want an episode,” and they might say, “Okay, you get one.” That’s not what Jensen did.
From day one, he was like, “Hey, I wanna direct some day.” That’s not where I was. And so, I don’t wanna take an episode away from a really deserving, talented director. I really love my job as an actor and as a storyteller, and as an executive producer, I help guide the storyline and help in the casting and help with the editing. So, I’m a pretty happy cat right now, where I stand. I love that puzzle. The director puts the puzzle pieces together. I like getting the puzzle pieces and figuring out how they can work even better. I think a lot of artists go, “Hey, I wanna guide this.” For me, I love the puzzle of acting and scene breakdown and story breakdown, and just trying to figure out how to make what’s already great on the page and great on the set, even better if I can.
You and Jensen Ackles have both talked about having interest in a possible revival of Supernatural. Is that something you’ve seriously considered doing? Have you had any real conversations about that, or are you just having conversations about having conversations?
PADALECKI: It’s not that I have seriously considered doing it, my single answer is yes. It’s timing. It’s availability. Jensen and I feel so strongly about our show that we had for 15 years together that we don’t wanna just do it just to do it. We don’t wanna go, “Hey, I have two weeks off in June. Let’s go ahead and shoot 10 pages a day, just so we can have some more content.” If and when Supernatural comes back, it’s going to be a labor of love, and we’re gonna put every hour in to make sure that it’s as true to the cannon and to the fandom and to the story and to the characters as possible. So, my short answer is it’s not a consideration, the answer is yes. I just don’t know when I’m available. I don’t know when he’s available. But again, my answer is yes.
Have you thought about all the different possibilities of what it could be, as far as whether you’d do a shortened season, whether you’d want to do a movie, or if none of it works, whether you’d do an animated series?
PADALECKI: Yeah. Honest to God, I don’t think about the medium in which it would air. I think about the story that I care about. If Jensen and I talk about where we would like to see Sam and Dean appear on screens again, and we think, “Cool, we like this, and we like this arc, and we like this conclusion,” then let’s do it. If they make it into a movie, great. If they make it into a limited series, great. If they make it into a flip book that’s available on Amazon, great. But at this point in time, I feel so protective of Supernatural that if the story’s fine, then I don’t care how it gets into the world.
Eric Kripke has also always made it known that he’d love to have you on The Boys anytime you were available. Would you like to make an appearance over there? Have you actually spoken to him about that? Would you even want to be in that world?
PADALECKI: Yeah, he has reached out to me and my response to him 90% of the time is, “Dude, I’m 41 now with three kids. I’m not 25 and working out three hours a day. I know you’re going to fucking make me get naked, so give me a heads up. I’m in, but let me get a nutritionist and a trainer and get in the hyperbaric chamber for eight months before you make me show up.” But yeah, it would obviously be a lot of fun to see Kripke again and to work on that show, which is a great show that I’m a fan of.
It certainly seems like a little wild break of fun.
PADALECKI: A little wild? Have you seen the show?!
Yes, and I love it very much. But I also have a sick sense of humor.
PADALECKI: I do, too. I love watching it, but imagine putting yourself in it. I’ve got kids. My mom and dad are still alive. I’ve got grandparents that are alive. I don’t know how to just unplug their electricity when the show airs.

OH your human writings were so good!! But on that 👀 what about human Caine getting sick for the first time (if you’d be comfortable writing it!)
I knew a sickfic was inevitable. Thank you for fulfilling the prophecy.
This is essentially a continuation of my other fic where they escape and whatnot. Please don't make me make this a series it requires too much creativity and I'm stupid /hj
While being human again had been more of an adjustment than what they were expecting, the group was happy to be free from the life-and-sanity-endangering environment the circus made them live in. They had all apparently been reported missing, which did help them with relearning their names, but they had chosen to keep their circus names anyway as they felt more like their own.
Despite being an abandoned company, C&A somehow had sent them all financial compensation, which they had all decided was too good to question. Even Pomni had stopped asking, especially considering how little progress it always got her. The troop had moved into an apartment complex together, as they had spent enough time with each other that living in completely different houses felt wrong. While Jax lived alone, Gangle and Zooble shared an apartment, Ragatha and Pomni shared another, and Kinger and Caine were paired together as well. Jax had no problems with being alone, liking the personal space it gave him, but he could always visit the others rather easily if he wanted to.
An unfortunate side effect of Caine coming with them was that he had no idea how to look after his human body or how it worked. He was getting better, but the first month or so was a lot of primarily Kinger teaching him how to function. The ringmaster got a lot of injuries now that his powers and cartoony physics weren't there to save him, although Kinger had no issues with patching him up each time.
Now, Kinger was in the kitchen, making breakfast for Caine. Caine was hopeless in the kitchen, as he was used to either just summoning food or Bubble making it instead. Kinger also had to keep track of when Caine was eating, as he frequently forgot it was something he needed to do. His lack of experience with eating as a whole was one of the most difficult parts of being in reality again, so Kinger often made him simpler meals that were easy to digest. At least Caine was surprisingly good at cleaning, so Kinger wouldn't have to do all the work.
Caine stumbled into the room, still in his striped pyjamas. He still tended to trip over his own feet, so Kinger made no note of it until he spoke up.
"Kingerrr... I think I might be dying..." The ringmaster's voice was hoarse and he sounded stuffy.
Panic spiked in the other man's chest, even though he knew Caine was likely overreacting. It was not an irregular occurrence, but that knowledge did little to calm him. "What?"
The man had to keep himself from rushing to Caine, gently putting a hand to his forehead to check his temperature. Caine leaned into the touch, his expression nothing less than pathetic. "Kiingeerrr-" he sneezed, spraying mucus across Kinger's front, "s-sorry. I don't know what's going on, breathing's so difficult now, my- my throat hurts, what-what's happening to me?"
Kinger removed his hand and wiped some of the mucus off of himself with his sleeve. "Eugh..." Caine sniffled, muttering another apology. "No, it's fine. You have a fever, and from everything else you told me, you're just sick. You aren't dying, which is good. Well, I don't think anyone's ever died from the common cold, at least."
"C-common? This horrid disease is meant to be common? I don't even wanna know what other things this reality subjects you to!" His yelling brought on a sudden fit of coughs, with Kinger slowly rubbing his back throughout, his concern growing.
"You are probably having worse symptoms than what you're supposed to, since you likely have a very weak immune system. How about I take you back to bed so you can rest?" Caine grabbed onto Kinger's shirt and held him close, whining into his front. Kinger took that as a yes and picked him up, taking Caine back to their shared bedroom. "You adorable, pathetic little man." Kinger placed a kiss on the ringmaster's temple as he set him down on the bed.
Suddenly, Caine wrapped his arms around the other man's neck and pulled him down, drawing a yelp from him.
"Caine- you're strangling me a bit-" He loosened his grip, but didn't let him get up.
"Don't leeeaave... pleeeaasse?" Kinger laughed, kissing him again.
"If you don't let me get up, then I can't get you anything to help with the cold."
"Mmm, I can live with that." A mischievous smile began to creep across Caine's face.
"Are you sure about that? Because I remember you saying just earlier that you were dying."
"That's what it felt like... but I feel so much better with you!" Caine turned away to cough again, fortunately less severely than last time.
"Thank you, dearest, but you'll feel even better when you let me take care of you properly." The ringmaster grumbled, but he did let go.
"Fine. Can I have another kiss first?" Kinger smiled and kissed Caine's lips before walking away.
"I'll go get your breakfast, then I'll go out to get you some medicine." Caine whined loudly at Kinger saying he would leave, making him laugh again. "I won't be gone that long! It'll keep you from 'dying', anyway."
Over the next week, Kinger looked after Caine as best as he could. Thankfully, the ringmaster had gotten most of his complaining out of his system in the first day, but that didn't stop him from being overdramatic every time Kinger had to leave the room, no matter how brief it was. He would admit that he was also overplaying it because it made Kinger laugh, which was a sound he always loved to hear. Caine did feel like it was Kinger who made him feel well again, even more so than the medicine, anyway.

Taking care of you on your period - Obey Me
Characters: Lucifer, Asmodeus, Diavolo
A/N: I’ve seen a lot of these types of posts, but they don’t feel specific enough for me, so I did it myself 💀 Might do other parts with the other characters eventually or if it gets requested. Reposting cause this isn’t showing up in tags :’) Requests are open!
Warnings: mentions of throwing up, blood, nudity (not sexual), and mention of fainting
Word count: 1.7k
part 2
part 3
Tumblr media
Lucifer:
-At the House of Lamentation, every day is a different person’s turn to cook. Conveniently enough, on the day it’s your turn, you’re hardly able to get out of your bed without the whole room spinning
-He definitely checks on whoever is meant to be cooking dinner every day a while before the usual time everyone sits to eat, since his brothers aren’t exactly the most punctual and responsible people around
-So he goes to check on you thinking you’re just being lazy and stuff, but he’s also a bit worried because he hasn’t seen you for a good portion of the day but didn’t realize it because of how busy he was
-After a while of lying down and feeling your body burning, you decide to try and pace around your room for a bit, hoping that a bit of movement would help ease the pain at least a little bit
-Except you’re still suffering so you’re kind of curled in on yourself, hunched over because it hurts to move but staying still feels like hell and it feels like nothing is working
-And you’re also trying not to puke the tiny amount of food you were able to just barely eat that morning because of the nausea
-I just know this man gets back pain, he definitely has some type of heating pad already that he keeps hidden away in his desk or something maybe like a couple rice packs or whatever the devildom version of those would be
-He’ll get you two of them, one for your back, one for your stomach and he also gives you a heavy pillow to put over your thighs in case they start hurting too (the weight helps quite a bit with the burning, and you feel less antsy)
-Once you feel better and are able to talk without the pain bothering you, he’s definitely gonna ask you more about it and if it’s that bad every month, so that he can be more prepared, especially if it gets worse the next time you get your period
-He’ll look into it some more and get you whatever supplements or meds you need (if you need any) to help with the pain and make sure you take them as often as you should
-Lucifer is such a workaholic but he’ll take a break since it’s for you 🥰
-Tbh he will probably give you an annoying lecture at some point ... as if you don’t know what you’re doing   😭 you just gotta tell him you obviously do know what you’re doing since it’s you feeling the pain and you’re doing what you can to take care of it but you’re not a doctor or able to just magically completely heal yourself and he’ll kinda shut up and stop being patronizing about it
-Will let you lay your head on his lap and he'll either play with your hair or rub your back gently until you either start feeling better, want to do something or want to get something to eat
Asmo:
-Asmo definitely has his fair share of experience with this kind of thing, I’m sure a few of the brothers do, but even though he loves to party and stuff, I doubt he’d just ditch everyone he’s with right after, he’d be attentive and especially if they got to know each other for a bit longer than just one night or a day, he’d learn to take care of them better
-He’ll notice you’re not feeling well and then ask you about it, but he doesn’t really need details, since he’s already familiar with humans and whatnot
-His bath is absolutely ginormous, so he’d definitely draw you a very hot bath (not to the point of it being super painful but enough to drown out the cramps with the amount of heat) + bubble bath if you’d prefer and Epsom salts to relieve the burning feeling on your back + other oils so the smells help you relax but nothing too strong
-If you’re comfortable with it he’ll keep you company while you take your bath and talk if you’re not feeling up to talking but don’t wanna be alone
-Or if you wanna play music to fill the silence and help you relax he’ll let you pick of course
-I feel like his room is very cool and not too stuffy which is perfect because the cramps make your body heat up a whole lot so if you’d like to stay, he’d let you nap on his bed and also bring you a heating pad just to help any more pain, just in case
-From the amount of cramps you were having + their intensity, he would know that you shouldn’t eat anything right away especially if you were nauseous as well, so he’d wait until about an hour and a half or so after you fall asleep to order something warm for you + he’d ask Solomon for recommendations because he’d know what foods are good for humans and stuff (he offers to cook something himself and Asmo has to hold himself back from telling him that the goal isn’t to hospitalize you 😭)
-He wouldn’t get anything spicy of course, since it could make your cramps even worse, and he doesn’t wanna risk it after they finally calm down/go away
-If it’s caused by vitamin deficiencies, he’ll order vitamin supplements for you and set alarms on his phone and remind you (over text or in person) when it’s time to take it, just in case you forget
-This man would absolutely not care the slightest bit if you happen to get some blood on his sheets, he may be super particular about lots of things but he knows that bedsheets being slightly stained is not a big deal and it hardly takes any time to wash them anyway, he’s so sweet too he’d probably try to make you feel better by saying he’s been meaning to change them anyway :’)
-He’ll gladly cuddle with you if you want, but he’s more than okay with giving you space if you want to just rest alone, as long as you have everything you need and have your phone near you so you can text or call him if you need anything else
-Will not hesitate to tell his brothers to shut up if they’re being loud when you’re resting because you need to replenish your energy and your hearing becomes more sensitive after all the pain (especially if you threw up before or were dizzy and your ears were ringing)
Diavolo:
-Let’s say you’re staying at the castle for a little while when you get your period all of a sudden
-It’s the first time you get it since coming to the devildom (since being around a bunch of demons would obviously cause quite a bit of stress, it just stopped for a while), so you’re a bit thrown off since it’s the last thing on your mind and you haven’t been keeping track of your cycle
-He’s not completely clueless when it comes to the differences between species and all that but he’s still not super great with how differently human bodies work in comparison to demons so he might just think you’re going to bleed to death for a little bit when you tell him :/ so you have to reassure him that you’re not gonna die and that unfortunately it is a very regular thing for humans
-Tbh you probably won’t be able to give him the whole rundown in detail of how it works because of how much pain you’re in so you just ask him to get you painkillers, and you go to take a nap and hope the pain fades once you fall asleep
-Instead, after napping for a bit the painkillers seem to just wear off as if you never took any to begin with and the pain comes back full force, so you ask him to draw you a hot bath
-The bath doesn’t seem to be helping much even after over half an hour of soaking in it so you decide to get out
-But then you get extremely dizzy all of a sudden, so you put on a towel robe and lay down on his bed to try and wait out the ringing in your ears + the dizziness and your heart beating insanely fast
-Conveniently enough you don’t have your phone on you and he’s who knows where probably working so you can’t even try to call him to help you (to get you a heating pad, painkillers, anything really, even just to have someone else’s presence because it legitimately feels like you’re about to die and not even in peace)
-You notice you got blood on the robe while lying down, so you go to the bathroom to get a pair of underwear and a pad (which you manage to do) but you get super nauseous all of a sudden so you just. sit on the floor for a bit, wearing basically nothing and hoping you’re not about to pass out or straight up die alone, partially naked on the cold bathroom floor
-After not too long (but what feels like a whole damn hour to you) he finally goes to his room and so you call him and he’s kinda panicky, but he brings you a new robe since you bled over the other one and helps you get up and walk over to his bed which is thankfully not too far from the bathroom since it’s in the room
-And then he helps you lie down under the covers, and then gives you a water bottle + he helps you drink from it since you’re dizzy and can’t really lift your head properly
-Gets into bed after you and just chills beside you, kinda rubbing your back and just making sure you’re not in too much pain (basically ignoring all the work he has to do)
-Makes sure you have food and water almost immediately after you wake up so the dizziness will go away faster
-Diavolo would feel really bad about not being able to help more, and I feel like he’d be the most likely to try to look into other solutions (aka stuff not meant for humans) if you find that human medicine and supplements aren’t doing anything even after months, he doesn’t want to see you in pain ever, let alone every single month, so he’d definitely want to fix the problem as soon as possible (and you do too obviously, although not exactly in the same way)

Sage Advice
Beth was not usually a fiend for gossip. Usually, she kept her head down, did her work, focused on her own life instead of other people’s.
But, oh, did Professor Gadling’s class provide such excellent gossip.
“Do you think he’s a student?” whispered Dylan at her side. They were, ostensibly, at a lecture event on medieval warfare. In reality, they were watching the Professor Gadling and his goth boyfriend show.
Beth squinted in their direction. Their professor was leaning against the wall several meters away, talking animatedly with a drink in one hand. His boyfriend – a word which felt insufficient somehow, though Beth couldn’t think of anything better – stood close to his side, just in his space, and, as she watched, leaned in to whisper something in his ear. “I don’t think he’s young enough to be an undergrad.”
“Grad student, then? But also, there are older undergrads, too, returning student things and whatnot?”
“Do you really think Professor Gadling is that kind of person?” Beth asked.
“I mean I wouldn’t have thought but you know what they say,” Dylan affected a dark tone, “you can never really know another human being.”
Beth snorted.
“He’s definitely way younger, though,” Dylan continued. “It’s a problem.”
“Oh, undoubtedly younger—” unless the guy just had a really excellent skincare routine “—but why is that such a huge problem for you? They’re both adults.”
“I just wanna know,” Dylan insisted.
“You need more excitement in your life.”
“This is my excitement.”
Beth was about to give up and go do something that didn’t involve creepily staring at her professor from across the room, when Professor Gadling rested his hand on his boyfriend’s hip and his boyfriend leaned in and said, just loud enough for Beth to make out, “You always offer such sage advice, Professor.”
She met Dylan’s gaze, both of them equally horrified.
“Is he fucking one of his TAs?” Beth hissed.
“Is he that guy’s advisor?” Dylan squeaked in return.
God. This was just getting worse and worse by the moment.
But also so much more interesting.

“Your students are gossiping about us again,” Dream murmured in Hob’s ear, voice rumbling so low Hob could swear his wine glass vibrated at the tenor.
“Only because you’re inciting them,” Hob grumbled back. “I know what you’re doing.”
“Contrary to what you believe, I am not manipulating their dreams. This is a game of the waking world only.”
“Why? Why limit yourself?”
“Because it is more of a challenge.” A sly smile cut across Dream’s face. “It has been a long time since I have worked with such raw material. Material that I cannot simply bend to my will. It is far more thrilling to succeed when the difficulty is greater.”
“Material? They’re my students, not clay.”
“That is where you are wrong.”
“So what exactly are you doing, then?” Hob demanded.
“I am crafting a story,” said Dream, and he lit up with such vibrancy at the words that Hob couldn’t bear to tell him to stop even if this all felt more like a mad science experiment than it did storytelling. “But I am not telling it, no. My materials are assumption and implication and I am letting the story tell itself.”
Hob was both impressed and frightened by the prospect of this. “How, exactly?”
Dream’s eyes glinted as if he had just been waiting for Hob to ask. “Like this.”
He leaned in next to Hob’s ear, and Hob caught him automatically by his hip. Dream said, louder than before, “You always offer such sage advice, Professor.”
Hob couldn’t stop his blush at the sultry tone of it. He watched out of the corner of his eye as the two students in the corner started whispering furiously at one another. Dream smirked, victorious.
“Before you say I am manipulating,” he said, back in his lower tone, “ask yourself, did I speak a false word?”
“Assuming you do in fact think I occasionally offer good advice, then no. What’s your point?”
“My point is this: blame me not for weaving lies in their heads. I speak no lies. Weak stories are built upon lies. Real stories grow from a seed of truth.”
“Like dreams,” Hob said, begrudgingly, and Dream nodded proudly. “God, your mind terrifies me sometimes,” Hob added, and knocked back the rest of his wine.

I see a lot of stories use the idea that Dani continues to be a fundamentally unstable clone who continues needing treatment for the rest of her life or even ends up melting even with treatment.  This surprised me because it went against some assumptions that I had forgotten were my idea in the first place.  I figured I would share them, in case anyone was interested.
My headcanon about how halfas (or Dannny at least) work is that the state of being is, first and foremost,  a survival adaptation.
I imagine that the portal works by overlapping the space inside it with a corresponding space in the ghost zone.  Basically,  both spaces exist in the same space for a brief time as the portal is opening.   This would have been all fine and dandy had those spaces only contained air and inert ectoplasm, but that's not what happened.
Danny's body was put under a kind of stress that would not usually be survivable by having a hole in reality torn through the space he was occupying.  Due to the portal opening into the afterlife,  his ghost started forming right where his not-quite-dead-yet human body was.  Now his dying human body and his still-forming ghost are both in the untenable position of existing in half of the overlapped space they are occupying.  In a last-ditch attempt at survival,  the two fuse into one body which is able to fully exist in the space it occupies,  which allows the portal to finish opening as Danny is no longer in the way.  This all happens in the space of a second.
In the following weeks,  Danny experiences a lot of craziness as the two halves of his biology integrate into a functional system.  Danny's ghost half acts as a kind of glue and maintenance system that keeps his body together and functional come hell or high water, and his human half provides a stable framework for his ghost half that allows it to keep its structure without expending energy on actively holding it.
This being the case, Danny's ghostly half doesn't have to put as much into maintaining its physical form because it has his human half's sturdy structure made up of proteins and Calcium and whatnot.  That's why Danny changes back when he's exhausted or kOed.  If there’s one thing physical matter is good at, it's continuing on as-is without being acted on by outside forces.
Vlad did not take this into account while trying to make clones entirely from ectoplasm, which he could get for free from the ghost Zone, without any of the componentsfrom which a human body is made.  The clones didn't have that secondary structure,  so when their bodies tried to lean on it, they failed and lost structural integrity.
Dani was a little heartier because the first thing she did was ask Danny for food and dig in when he gave her a whole lot.  This resulted in Dani's body having a collection of proteins, vitamins, minerals, etc to put to use.  Not enough to form a complete body without her ghostly side working overtime, but enough to take some of the strain off it.
The reason Dani remained unstable after escaping Vlad the first time was because she was facing food insecurity as a homeless child.  What the Fenton Ecto-Dejecto did was one of two things.  Either it beefed up her ghostly side to let her function in a manner more similar to a full ghost, or it energized her and bought her time feed herself up.
To put it simply,  Danny's clones were unstable because Vlad didn't feed them.  They didn't need a mid-morf DNA sample, they needed the Emergency Ham.

Hi! I’m sorry if my question seems to be silly, but I really was wondering.
Have you ever saw and/or heard you deities? How do you do that? I’ve never experienced something like that, but I see people sharing this sort of experience. Like… they can describe appearance, voice etc of their deities. How? I fully rely on my gut in my journey, but I do wish to see, hear and know my deities in face. So, if my question doesn’t bother you, could you share your experience and tips, please?
Thank you!
Hello there, lovely!! Your question isn't silly at all, don't worry. Thanks for asking. 🤍🌼
I indeed have! I've seen/felt and heard my deities before. And, the process to be able to do this is different for everyone.
But, for me, it took countless hours of meditation with them, I was spending so much time focusing on my already existing abilities. Like my active imagination, my sense of visualization that came from that, and so on and so forth which would eventually allow me to begin to see my beloved deities. Being able to recognize their energy soon led me to being able to comprehend their voices and feel their touches. Then that got me into the process of being able to see them.
Gut feelings are actually one of the ways you can get to learn your deities appearance as well. You could try and picture them from whatever comes to mind. A pop culture artwork of them, maybe a livened version of their statue, someone pretty on Pinterest with a few extra features, ect. Deity appearances are very fluid, and can change depending on any factor, so there's no pressure on finding out what they "exactly" look like. Because, they have no exact look. Just take whatever feels best for you. That's what it will come down to most of the time, anyway. What resonates. Like always, lol.
Actually, for about 6 months of being able to see them at first, I couldn't register their voices outside of when they would speak. If that makes sense, lol. Like, I'd understand it when they'd talk to me, but when they weren't speaking, I couldn't recall their voice, just what they had said. Sometimes, their appearance will do the same. You'll see it in the moment, you'll feel or hear them in the moment, then whenever that interaction/meditation ends - so does the...sensation? of them. You know?
For some part of my time with Apollon at first, I'd simply spend my time scrolling through Pinterest for pictures that reminded me of him. I kept them in a sort of e-altar board for him so I could go back and refresh my mind if I was having trouble seeing him in my imagination. Since, sometimes, it helps to simply - daydream of their appearances. At least for me. Getting more used to their eye colors, their body languages, imagine them speaking to you every now and then to try and have their voice be easier to comprehend, stuff like that.
Don't rush it, I can almost guarantee that you'll see and sense your deities in these ways eventually. However, they know what's best in the end. Seeing deities, feeling them, hearing them, ect - can be quite the energy drainer because of how high frequency they are and whatnot. Even if they lower themselves to some extreme degrees to be able to show themselves to us in these ways. So, if you aren't experiencing it just yet, that's probably because you aren't ready for it. Comprehending deities is a difficult task for anyone at first, and can be a persistent struggle even over months. And that's perfectly fine. Because these are celestial beings of the stars and all that other universe-y stuff, we as humans are conditioned not to believe these astral realm things because of how unlimited it all is. Of how... Ironically unbelievable the experience is.
So, even when you're sensing them, your brain will be like "mm...no" most of the time when you're first getting the hang of it. Out of the want to protect you and whatnot.
Deities will 9/10 times try their darndest to help you comprehend them by coming in appearances of like... TV characters, like I've heard some people see Loki as the Loki from the marvel series. Or, how you see book characters. There's been a few times where Aphroditus has appeared to me as a fanart of Lucien from ACOTAR that I loved and made the way I see him whenever he's present in the book. Their voices just the same. They might sound like a singer you very much enjoy, or like a comfort character of yours. I could go on, but I think you get the point, haha.
I saw Apollon as the Apollo from Blood of Zeus without ever having watched or have had heard of it, I only noticed he was taking that form after I looked up his name on Pinterest, and I just went with it. Same with Dionysus. Point is, let them show themselves to you however your brain allows them. I put so much tremendous pressure on myself to perfectly memorize how my higher self looked or how my deities looked, just to be reminded how their forms are infinite. How - they don't want you to stress over that.
They don't want you to feel less because you cannot experience them in the way another devotee can, because that's them, this is you. And they love you. And they'll meet you where you're at to help you progress and grow.
My motto for this? It'll happen when it happens, and when it does - I know they'll be refreshingly, ravishingly beautiful.
I never liked surprises, but, hey. When your deity pops out with a new look entirely and it takes the breath out of you to see it - you get more accustomed to it over time, haha.
Sorry if I dragged this on, I love questions like these lol. I hope it helped!! Blessed be. 💛🤍💛

Might I perhaps offer the idea of General Lilia learning the intimacies of food through a baby Silver? No longer is food a survival borne necessity-- No longer is it scavenged scraps, nor bottom barrel camp gruel. No longer is it meat stolen and seared by the ashes of a pillaged village, nor an unassuming toad, nor something cold, nor scheduled, and dull.
It cannot be.
The human wails and it is the screech of metal on metal. It does not often cry. Your error is extreme and grievous.
This vexes you.
The baby, of course.
Quickly now-- shut it up.
It is not old enough to consume solid foods. It has yet to bear fangs, or menace, and the flesh of its tongue is flaccid. This disgusts you. The human is not strong, nor smart, unable to not only defend itself with the simplicity of a bite, but unable to accomplish the base need of sustenance. You bear your own fangs, perhaps as a threat, perhaps of a (pleading) example.
You mash the food. What food? Well, you did resort to the toads before. If it wanted to live, surely it could eat the toad. No, you were told, (slapped, really, by warrior, daughter of Baul). Toads were unacceptable in either their nutrient fullness or mashed.
You worked hard to mash that.
Fine.
More for you.
It’s still crying.
Shit.
Fruits. Often a rare delicacy on the field. Wildberries were more-so cover than meal; more-so dare than comfort. Take it you damned human, and be grateful. You examine the pale yellows shoved towards your counter corner. An export, a gift from the golden bounties of the Scalding Sands, a gift from your Queen. Tsk. The expense far outweighs the cry of this human.
IT WAILS.
But perhaps it can buy you silence.
Your hand rises, meeting the hilt of your cleaver.
Your eye twitches…
No…
No, this will not do.
(Your weapon is clean, you fool! Meticulously sheen and prepped for immediate confrontation! To slice a simple fruit? Please.)
((The blood haunts your weapon. Pestilence haunts your weapon. The cries haunt your weapon– baby.))
(You cannot use your cleaver, it is far above such use for a human.)
You glare at it, and are proud to note its fear. One look, and you have calmed its torrent of tears, though, even now the salt escapes its eyes. But of course, it is nature for the weak to weep in the face of danger. Its eyes are wide and curious. It sniffles, and auroral skies bore into your reddened grounds. Eyes and souls and whatnot.
Look away.
You prefer it crying.
But, ah, there it is again. Soft hiccups, like the light rains of morning dew.
Fine, human. You win for now.
You peel the banana and it coos, birds joining along in song. Mash now… Mash more. More.
…More?
You squint at it. Human.
It blinks.
Yes, yes you. Can you eat… drink… eat this?
Its wide eyes are a nod.
A snarl. Annoying.
It is still lumpy. I shall mash it more, lest you choke and die.
Mash.
Mash.
Mash.
Giggle.
Giggle.
Silence, human! Were you not taught the value of patience?
Clapping.
A scoff. Of course not. You humans have no concept of nobility, let alone virtue.
You work at the meal in silence. The sun filters gently through your window. It catches on the boy’s hair, and the strands seem to dance with rainbows. Your arms do not tire from the repetitive motion– please. You’re a trained solider. A dinner cannot cripple you.
The boy smiles at you.
SLAM.
Fine human. Fine. Take your food. Choke.
And even if Lilia’s food is dog shit lol, and he half-way seems to be trolling you, I think there’s a genuine fondness when he prepares a meal. Learning/ *cough* experimenting with recipes seems to be a freedom for him. The freedom of leisure, of finding peace in a meal– fun! even! It’s fun to have the luxury of playing– emphasis on playing!-- with food! Because you can afford it! Because there is a surplus! And it's even more fun to share with your family! (Rip, lol.) And when that joy and (cackled) playfulness is reciprocated with a bite? When your peace has value, and your silliness appreciated? (Even if it’s gross? Lol? DESPITE it being gross?) Gosh, I– I think that genuinely touches him. Even if he’s amused by your (foolishness) bravery, there is a love there. And to have all of this born from raising Silver (obviously)? HA. HAHA. LOSER. HE LOVES HIS SON. WEIRD. LOVES HIM SO MUCH, ENOUGH TO THE POINT OF CHANGE AND EVOLUTION. POINT AND LAUGH.
(Yo, the thought of him feeding his young child? Bro. BRO.)
Anywho, thought you would enjoy this lil brain worm lol. (Idk if you remember, but I actually sent you an anon before! I wrote to you about Sebek and his lil Plover family :) its totally okay if you dont lmao, but just in case, hi!) I hope you’re having a fantastic day :) thanks for all that you write!! <3333
Tumblr media
plover anon, you came into my house and ripped out my sobbing heart piece by aching piece— this was wonderful.
it is one of my FAVORITE things in the entire fandom when an author digs inside lilia's general vanrouge persona, particularly now that we do know the bitter, stark contrast of how he behaved prior to finding silver and malleus' birth. how would he have reacted to being the sole guardian of a helpless child, especially one of his enemies, and possibly the child of the very human royalty who were responsible for the decimation of his country, his home? there's no love here, no grief for what's been lost, no bond of loyalty as he shares with malleus. this is a wailing and useless pink, squirming thing— he could not love it less.
and to capture that begrudging, spiteful attempt to simply ensure the child's survival (not care yet! not nurture!) through the act of FOOD no less! the journey of food being so intertwined with the journey of love for his human son is KILLING ME AND I'M IN LOVE!! i am eating up (no pun intended lol) lilia's inner monologue and it is SO SATISFYING!! the way you kept switching between the act of giving sustenance with the same blade that took the lives of this baby's kin, the way that lilia keeps struggling to view the child as anything more than the species responsible for their misery, the fucking hilarious way he keeps getting riled up for thinking he's being bested by silver's refusal of his absolute awful dinner offerings!!!
(and you did it all in second person pov my fucking BELOVED POV!!)
the transition of food from necessity, fuel, a means to an end, to a luxury explored with others, the delight in seeing a loved one's face react to your uncertain attempts— the fact that lilia knows his food is shit, and watches that baby-now-young-man take a bite no matter how many instances he's been stricken by it and smile weakly at him through his grimace and say, perhaps a bit less vinegar, father (father! FATHER!!), the fact that this boy will never refuse him, will love him and his godawful dishes until the end of time!! what kind of love is that but unconditional!!! what has general lilia vanrouge ever done in his long, lonely life to deserve that smile!!!

there's a quality here about language that this episode gets right. i think largely scifi media, particularly star trek, has sort of let the bias towards vocality influence the world-building of alien languages, when, to me, the more obvious standard galactic idiom if it came to exist would be something way closer to sign language. sounds as units of significance only work in very specific mediums and definitely don't work across voids. (and like i'm always hoping that i'll see the actual and complete linguistic complexity of a sign-language represented in alien-narratives (not just the ink-blots, like in arrival)--gestures as units of significance!--in human culture we haven't even scratched the surface of the ways a linguistically-trained human brain will create language from body-gestures, with all the home signing and whatnot going on all over the world from the creative and intuitive efforts of deaf and hearing impaired people--but that's sort of tangential to this post)--
so i really like that it's not immediately obvious that these aliens living in the "deuterium" in the nebula are speaking a language at all--let alone exist. it takes uhura, the linguist, to extrapolate from the facts of the situation as well as the fact that language is both fundamentally representative (the word is not the thing) while being drawn inextricably from material. while the language can barely be detected as a language, the abstractions are still communicated, and it makes sense that they would sound to uhura the way they do considering they're living in a nebula which is more dense with matter than the full void but is still not the stable atmosphere of a planet that would allow for a human-translatable vocality.
so "experience" becomes the unit of significance for these aliens, the evolved emotion of conscious beings recognizing another conscious being. the episode had a funny technobabble explanation about planes of existence and how the aliens were living in "higher-dimension," which makes sense, in a enormously abstract way, when you think of four-dimensional creatures being able to look down on us in the same way we look down on the second-dimension and can see everything. but that idea implies a relationship with time that i personally can't imagine and an understanding of causality that would dictate a specific way that uhura can communicate with them, which is contrary to what they show in the episode.
she says "keep going" looking at her own deep pain and takes a step closer to it because this plot of Translation is about what all translation is about---intimacy, embodied and immaterial. it's the sharing of vulnerability which allows one person to recognize the self-hood of another--and it requires uhura to be open to communication and the possibility of there being a self capable of communicating in the first place as well as quite literally opening her body up to receiving the tangible communication. the act of listening here is no different than the way ears allow a touch to communicate acoustic information. under the technobabble, the argument is really about what it means to exist in the state of translation, between one idiom and another, where everything is both ideation and sensation, and at some point you have to cross from one end to the other and lose as little data as possible.
and the way uhura is able to do that! she is literally discovering new worlds and new civilizations, because she is a linguist.

As autumn colors fall...
Week III: Crossover [x]
(Concepts + bonus sketches under the cut)
I had a LOT in my brain on this one but I’ve been busy pretty much all week. I highly doubt I’m the first to have this idea but hey, here’s my take on it at least.
Tumblr media
Leshy takes the role of the Beast. He’s a lot more “neutral” than the Beast we see in OGTW canon, but is motivated by self-preservation all the same. Not so much in terms of living forever, I don’t think he can really “die” in this AU because he sort of embodies the Unknown as much as it embodies him (he’d still be there, but would be without a physical form... not really ideal). But he definitely wants things to stay the way they are, which was going just fine until Luke Carder decided to waltz in and “help”.
On the topic of Luke, he’s pretty much the same as in canon. Maybe he originally had a Halloween costume like the brothers do in the show, but chances are it was either some last-minute “pun” costume or something equally simple and Horribly impractical to run around the woods in (i.e. a sheet ghost), so he loses it pretty early on, leading him to stick out like a sore thumb in the otherwise lost-in-an-antique-shop feel the Unknown seems to have. I’m not sure how he got there—didn’t think that far ahead—but we’ll go with he was lured there (for whatever reason) under the pretense that he’d finally get closure regarding his sister’s death. (He’s not going to, of course—at least not literally, the Unknown isn’t really an afterlife, more of just a “crossing over”—but let him keep thinking that).
That’s all well and good for Leshy; depressing, sure, but he can just subtly shift the trees to redirect Luke’s ass home before he starts inadvertently causing trouble by prodding around (though he can keep him around for a little bit, at least. Just to see what he does, not to trap him forever; he doesn’t exactly have a lot of company in the Unknown that aren’t immediately deterred by his presence). That is, until he stumbles across a group of animals pleading for help only an outsider can give and Leshy’s plan immediately begins to crumble.
Tumblr media
The other Scrybes pretty much serve the same role as they do in Act 1 as talking cards, or otherwise fill the same niche as Beatrice in OGTW proper. They weren’t originally animals, but they weren’t human either like Beatrice was. Instead, they were cursed by Leshy (who wasn’t too keen on continuing to share his forest with a gaggle of other supernaturally-inclined assholes) and his Woodsmen to take on their current forms. I can’t see them having been traveling together all this time, so they all individually come to Luke desperate for help and are thrilled (/s) to see the other two have done the same. But hey, they’re pretty desperate for a way out and the previous human who came through actively made things worse for them, so it’s pretty much a last-ditch effort at this point. Cue hijinks.
Tumblr media
The previous outsider to pass through was, of course, Kaycee, who arrived in the Unknown via near death experience like OGTW canon seems to imply. Being in the Unknown for long periods of time (assuming you’re not just born there) isn’t kind to the human body; if they don’t immediately start sprouting branches, one can expect lowered body temperature, a slowed pulse, gradually not needing to blink or sleep or eat... just generally weird shit that can’t be healthy. Kaycee’s been through all of that and then some; it’s a stretch to say she’s still alive, really. She’s not really the Woodsman; she opted to befriend the beast instead and now they’re pretty much inseparable (both because they’re genuinely buddies and because it’s mutually beneficial: Leshy ensures she’s not completely consumed by the Unknown, and Kaycee ensures Leshy gets to keep his form by bringing him animals and whatnot. Win for both parties). I’d imagine she’s also the only one who refers to him as just “Leshy” and not some sort of intimidating alias (Stoat, Stinkbug, and Wolf excluded, all of which only use his name when they’re being petty).
Tumblr media
The lantern is more of just a thematic convenience here, it’s not actually tied to Leshy’s being. Instead, he has his camera: taking pictures of creatures (or people) with it traps their own life force within the film and therefore allows him to persist for longer. The pictures themselves don’t really do anything special, nor does getting rid of them, but Kaycee probably has a room where she develops pictures anyway, if for no other reason than Luke stumbling into a room lined wall to wall with antique photographs and asking his animal companions to find themselves would be both nerve-racking and a little humorous.
Kaycee is the only other person allowed to use the camera; a little bit of a weak point for Beast!Leshy. Sure, she’s strong too (she lives in the woods mostly on her own, carries an axe, and just generally has had a ton of time to train herself up) but not nearly as much as someone who can quite literally command the trees to kill you. Probably Luke’s best chance to defeat Leshy would be to go through Kaycee, assuming he goes that route (probably not... I don’t know how this AU would “end” though).
Tumblr media
Again, Stoat, Stinkbug, and Wolf weren’t human + are similarly unkillable so they’re a little bit of a special case. Getting their visages captured just weakened them, allowing someone else to finish the job and solidify their respective “curses”. To return them to normal... it’s also kind of a Beatrice situation, giving Luke plenty of room to run around the forest in a wild goose chase. Stunted Wolf needs his other eye back, Stinkbug needs her wings plucked, and Stoat... I don’t know what Luke needs to do with those wire cutters, but he’ll figure it out (snip its whiskers, maybe?) He waits to get all three back before returning them to normal, both out of equity (much to their disdain and/or relief) and because... honestly, I don’t think he trusts them 100%. They may be tiny, but these guys clearly still have some sort of ulterior motive, even Luke isn’t blind to that.
Anyway that’s all I’ve got. I guarantee I missed something though. Feel free to send an ask if there’s any glaring issues/places that just need elaboration (or I might add on later unprompted anyway if I have the time). Thanks for reading my massive text walls; here’s a Stoat with my favorite Beatrice line.

Drakenier: Violence as expression and affirmation - Pt.1
It has become a rather well-known piece of trivia (or at least, well-known within the niche internet circles I flow through) that 2010's Nier Replicant / Gestalt had its overall message thoroughly inspired by well, 9/11 - the discourse that produced it, that came of it, and became it. Although it may not be a direct quote, "to kill someone, you don't have to be out of your mind, you just need to believe you are correct" is a sentiment clearly echoed throughout the game; as the many layers of its central and side conflicts drop alongside the curtains to its second, third (and maybe kind of fourth) playthrough, so does what had, for quite a ways into the game, seemed like a story mostly about finding, nurturing and protecting a community - people to call home.
However, the statement above seems to somewhat conceal-so-as-to-merely-hint-at what I'd argue is a much more complex argument the games lay forth, when looked at as one series. I, myself, have found it difficult in the past to distill both Replicant and the wider series as a whole into one coherent message or thematic frame; partly (and beautifully), because there mustn't be one - this singular reading which eclipses the broad range of experiences that people have come to share with the series - such an idea is preposterously reductive. Still, I think that this mish-mash of "the game is about philosophy and tragedy and nihilism and existentialism and society and humanity and life" and whatnot misses a bit of where the different themes intersect, producing further instances of meaning from the text. I hope to discuss the evolution (were I to sound even more pretentious, I might have used the word genealogy, but I would never stoop to that) of a few central concepts surrounding drakenier's "philosophy of violence" and where they seem to have informed or have been informed by other aspects of the works.
Strap in, because just from writing the introduction I can already tell this is gonna have to come in multiple parts. Hopefully my writing can steer away from boring you to tears throughout all of it.
Spoilers for the whole series!
Part 1: Replicant, and the subjective experience gained from that funky 9/11 fun fact
"Blood is sound, sound is words, and words are power"
This quote, almost a chant from Weiss as the player starts to grasp the gameplay loop of attacking enemies to allow for magical attacks, ties in the game's teaching of that system with what I consider to be the most powerful writing from Replicant (I'm going to refer to it as Replicant for the sake of convenience, obviously Gestalt is included in that). And it is deeply tied to what Taro himself has credited as a major source of inspiration for Replicant in relation to his previous game, Drakengard.
In some ways, Nier Replicant isn't introducing a new, foreign idea over the original Drakengard, so much as bringing out new elements from within its predecessors' critiques of the gaming landscape. Though that only really becomes clear by taking future foresights the series would reach into account; this is the point at which it becomes prudent to ask ourselves one question - how might the game's design regulate the player's interaction with the game world? (A question that, if you're at all even familiar with Drakengard, you probably already know the answer to)
From this, we can extrapolate a lot of meaning from how the original Drakengard was conceived: a game about violence, from the perspective of people who were so immersed in their own awfulness and the general precarity of their world that they cannot enact anything but that same violence. And it is that violence which comes to define them.
I'd also like to do the pedantic thing and bring up the fact that violence can be thought of as more than just physical harm, but also in terms of violation. In that sense, when I claim that Drakengard's characters are defined by violence, I mean it in that their reduction of other people to objects serves as an exertion of themselves - the Dynasty Warriors inspired combat of cleansing battlefields as the only win state reflects back at Caim as his only method of building an identity of his own, one based on strength demonstrated from conquering his enemies. You might find that these 'enemies' are violated the moment they're placed into the game as props that sustain its overall narrative.
In fact, this 'loss of personhood as self-affirmation' theme reverberates into another key factor of the game's story: pacts. They explicitly deprive humans of something of themselves - their ability to communicate, to see, to age, to have hair (sure????) -, and reduces both parties into one shared essence, yet it is what permits its characters to have strength through which they find themselves as able to inflict that dehumanization onto others. Dehumanization becomes their characterization, both from the audience's perspective as well as in-world.
Following that, Nier Replicant does not dispute that destruction of the other simultaneously inflicts upon the self both corruption and affirmation. If anything, it only takes measures to strengthen that sentiment, in light of how the added theme of perspective brings forth a need to now more closely study the subjective experience of perpetrating violence. Thus:
"Blood is sound, sound is words, and words are power"
The gameplay system I've anchored this analysis to comes into play; attacking your enemies gives you the literal strength to continue your offense, by design - ridding them of their life force, their blood, perpetuates the narrative, the words being built, the sealed verses of a prophecy you've set for yourself: that of being a hero to your sister/daughter, friends and general community. This even extends to the lyrics of Ashes of Dreams:
"Are we the plaything of fiends or merely the dreams that we're telling ourselves?"
Though we shouldn't forget that Weiss' comment takes the form of X=Y=Z=W, and it seems I've neglected the 'sound' part of the sentence. As I was writing this, my brain immediately made the association between that and Drakengard 3's focus on the power of Song, which, in fairness, definitely was made with the rest of the series in mind - but, in this instance, that sounds like a bit of a lucky coincidence. Still, what the concept of sound brings to the statement doesn't seem too far off from what meaning could be made at a bit more of a general, rudimentary level, that being: our lifeforce (blood) translates into our ability to be heard (sound), thus effectively giving us narratives about the world around us (words), which gives our actions direction, purpose (power).
From that, we can take a closer look into a lot of different aspects of the game. After all, the reason I proclaimed this piece of writing to be so powerful isn't really because I could - and did - stretch its interpretation to its fullest, but also from the way it manifests itself around the struggles of various characters, while being tied to the game's overall systems and world. Emil receding into his identity as a weapon in order to redirect what he sees as his curse onto those who seek to harm his friends - leading to his sacrifice; Weiss, who also goes on to sacrifice himself, does so in the name of putting an end to this now 5-year mission, grown into his own center of existence; Louise, perhaps reacting to the world around her, saw humanity as something to claim from others, and faced erasure upon perceiving herself as incapable of acquiring it. For better or for worse, the moral codes characters create from their own intentions of living become rigid scripts to follow as self-fulfilling prophecies of their own identities.
We can see that, ultimately, characters across both games tend to follow journeys with a general structure of: bleak circumstances > feeling of powerlessness > violence as a misguided means of reclaiming the power to define oneself > entrenchment in violence becomes overbearing, coming to annihilate the very self which sought to instigate it. From the first Drakengard to the first Nier, this hasn't changed a bit. What changed is a distinct awareness in how the self, or what we might call "us" stands in conflict with the generalized other, "them", and where it uses morality as a catalyst for smoothing out the uncomfortable edges of that conflict.
In fact, the annihilation of the self as, paradoxically, an act of self-affirmation is the very core of ending D for Replicant. And this is, partly, where the inciting 9/11 quote comes into play - given our newfound empathetic understanding of where violence comes from, how do we process it? How do we make sense of it? From the way the world is established, the very act of surviving, for both replicants and gestalts, is somewhat tainted as immoral, and predicated on the erasure of an 'other'. It leaves room for later material to find itself more at ease with this question (and those circle back nicely to ending E from the new version, as well). For now, most of what the game feels comfortable in concluding comes from Kainé, who stands in contrast with most characters by fully rejecting the notion of being a moral agent throughout the entire story, yet the game still offers us the chance to save her - it, mirroring the protagonist, relentlessly believes in her. Not even that "she can be better", whatever better might mean, just that "she can be".
And obviously, finally, we can extrapolate plenty of social commentary from this. Playing off of the thematic material introduced in Automata, we could argue that Replicant's plot is, in retrospect, about slowly building up to the depiction of a certain "Death of God" - which, in nietzschean terms, is not merely society straying from religiosity, but represents an irreparable shattering in the very idea of a centralizing narrative that everyone could subscribe to and fit within. So ends humanity, not just as a species, but as a concept; no longer are people able to identify themselves as containing some unified essence of 'humanity', recognizing the other as a complete self in its own right, as they retreat into the violence that was inflicted against them, which they inflict back at the world - to have your totality reduced to a role in a play that the winner gets to write. And in that sense, I'd argue it captures specific facets of a post-9/11 climate pretty well.
Anyway, gonna make a separate post that's just about Drakengard 3, and then one that's just about Automata, but at a later time!
also, this thesis becomes more relevant when the time comes to analyze automata, but it was still helpful in having me think through the previous games, so I'll drop it here as a reference for now, and will mention it more loudly once we come to specific sections later (not about to be the next target for hbomberguy lmao): http://dspace.library.uvic.ca/handle/1828/14525
Cool that there are people writing about it!! Thank you Xinlyu Tan, the goat!!! Would love to go through more material, but I'm writing this for fun on the side... hope anyone reading this has enough fun with it to go looking for more on their own, go extend the discussion further, blah blah blah. Also hope that I make any sort of vaguely coherent point. And, lastly, I hope you enjoy yourself!

Guardian // Optimus Prime, Ratchet, Smokescreen (TfP) & reader
Tumblr media
Optimus Prime
You were honoured that the leader of the Autobots assigned himself to be your guardian. However, you were concerned that having to ensure your safety would get in the way of his responsibilities. Optimus assured you that it would not. You struck him as a mature and responsible individual and so he knew that he didn't need to worry too much over you
You could tell a lot were weighing on Optimus's mind and so you encouraged him to open up to you, even going on drives with him to clear his mind. Optimus was grateful for that. Other than Ratchet, you were one of his closest confidants and friends, often seeking your opinion on things and confiding to you. He, in turn, would take the time to listen to your troubles, worries and whatnot.
Optimus took his job as your guardian very seriously and was protective of you, frequently risking his life to make sure you were not harmed during missions. You regularly worried when your guardian got injured, especially if it was because he was protecting you. And so you did whatever you could to ease Optimus's burden, whether was it keeping yourself out of danger or learning some useful skills such as self-defense and first-aid.
During your down time, you would usually keep Optimus company, doing your own thing. If not, you would hang out with Jack, Miko, Raf and the other Autobots.
Of course, everything must come to an end. When it was time for the Autobots to return to Cybertron, you stood on Optimus's shoulder and hugged him, tears pricking your eyes. You thanked him for everything he had done and told him that you were glad to have met him. Your guardian appeared a little sorrowful as well as he gave you a fond pat on the head, saying that he shared your sentiments.
"Farewell, (Y/N). Till all are one."
"Till all are one."
Ratchet
Ratchet wasn't exactly pleased when Optimus appointed him to be your guardian. But he trust his friend's decision and so did not protest much. As for you, you were a little hesitant. Ratchet didn't seem like the warmest of bots. However, Optimus assured you that underneath his gruff exterior, he had a kind spark. He would warm up to you eventually... as long as you didn't disturb him.
If a mission required an extra pair of hands, you would tag along. Otherwise, you would stay at the base with Ratchet. As much as Ratchet didn't want to admit it, he grew to enjoy your company. You were very interested in Cybertronian technology, physiology and such, and would ask him about them (if he was in the mood, of course). You also helped him with his experiments and treatment of patients sometimes, becoming an apprentice/assistant to him of sorts. Ratchet would ask you questions about human culture as well. It was the least he could do for someone who had a passion for science like he was. The others (except Optimus and Raf) would regularly teased Ratchet for having a soft spot for you, much to his chagrin.
Ratchet cared a great deal about you. When you felt down, he would try his best to cheer you up (albeit awkwardly). He would let you help him with whatever he was working with to get your mind off things, offer advice and occasionally give rides (to a deserted area, of course). He would be naggy or harsh if you got injured, depending on the severity of the situation. He would lecture you before his expression and tone softened, telling you to be careful next time.
When Ratchet decided to stay on Earth, you continued to be his partner and helped him monitor any remaining Decepticon threats until he had to return to Cybertron to treat an injured Ultra Magnus.
"Say 'hello' to the others for me, yeah?"
"Yeah, I will."
Smokescreen
Smokescreen was thrilled to be assigned your partner. His idol entrusted him with such an important task. Besides, you seemed like a cool person. You, too, didn't mind having him as your guardian. He was the one who rescued you from the Decepticons and appeared friendly. Optimus pulled you aside and asked you to take care of the young recruit as he could tell that you were the more responsible one between the two of you. Grinning, you readily agreed to the Autobot leader's request.
The two of you enjoyed going on joyrides, playing video games and doing other fun stuff together. Smokescreen never failed to make you smile and laugh and you, him.
During missions, you made sure that Smokescreen didn't do anything reckless, sometimes successfullly and sometimes not so much. During one of those unsuccessful attempts, your life was put in danger. Since then, Smokescreen had matured and took his role as your guardian more seriously. You were surprised by this change but you didn't mind it. It was a good change, after all. Moreover, he was still more or less the same Smokescreen that you knew and liked.
When it came the time to part ways, you fist bumped Smokescreen. Smiling sadly, you thanked him for being an awesome partner. Your guardian returned your smile with one of his own, saying that he felt the same way.
"Don't ever forget about me, alright?"
"Of course not, (Y/N). I will never, ever forget you."

TOONTOWN HEADCANON LORE POST THINGY NUMBER 2
(Like last time, this is also cantered around TTCC, and is mostly just me rambling like a lunatic about my headcanons.)
Topic: Toons
(This is sorta like the Toon counterpart of the Cog post I made earlier)
Basic Details
Toons are generally very silly beings, and are a very social species by nature. They come in a variety of sizes, shapes, etc.
They can be a singular species, or they can be a mishmash of different parts, there is not much limit to what a Toon can look like.
Variation in "animation style"
Their mannerisms and motion is usually akin to that of the kind of cartoons Toontown was inspired by (rubberhosey, vibrant and colorful) but there is also much variation in this as well. One Toon may move around/look like they're "animated" differently than another.
Toons are spread out far and wide, but when I say spread out, I mean it. Compared to how much of the world is inhabited by Suits, there aren't as many Toons, to the point where many Suits don't even know of their existence.
(This is largely because Toon culture/Toon subjects aren't really taught or talked about in Suit societies, both due to lack of knowledge on them, and the deliberate desire to stamp them out of public knowledge)
Regardless, there are notably other significant populations out there (think stuff like where Ducktales takes place and whatnot).
The Toons at Toontown aren't the only ones who have had to deal with the whims of Suits and their expansion, desire to take land, etc.
More Biology Stuff
There isn't really much that is concrete to the biology of Toons. Like stated earlier, they're extremely diverse and have many differences across each other.
Some might have skeletons or bones and whatnot, but whether they do or not probably wouldn't make too much of a difference.
Probably something like cartoon logic, where whatever is funniest at that moment will be true. That's probably the answer to a lot of things about Toons now that I think of it
Sillyness
Just about every Toon by nature needs to be happy to be healthy. The Laff meter is an invention that helps track a Toon's sillyness/happiness at a certain time. This is measured/quantifiable with the Laff formula. (I'm literally just making that up cause I thought it sounded funny so make of it what you will)
Laff increasing is essentially a sign of increased resistance to negativity, in a way. Not that high Laff Toons will never get sad, angry, or otherwise never feel negative emotions, but a Toon with high Laff may have a better time faring against deliberate attacks to one's happiness. Laff is generally increased by having fun, and is often boosted when experiencing that fun with someone else.
Sad or otherwise unhappy Toons often have very low Laff, whether it be that they have less than others, or that they have lost a lot of their Laff.
Some Toons are more serious than others, and may not show happiness/joy in the same way, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're a scrooge. Like us humans, (which don't exist in this world) they have wide ranges of emotions and may experience them/show them differently.
Despite this, some Toons might be edgy........... and reject happiness or something IDK why you'd willingly want to be miserable
Culture
It varies a lot. There's quite a lotta Toons of all shapes and sizes out there. Lots of communities. They all got different cultures! But they all most often share the same general traits (happiness, sillyness, helping each other out, etc. How nice.) i really dont know what else to write here.
Fin (i dont know how to end this)

Hello! Parental/platonic relationship please of a rescued kid reader, who has been experimented on & abused by M.E.C.H because of their incredible healing power on any living being (plants, animals, humans even the bots) and was left in bots' base for their protection.
With tfp optimus, ratchet and arcee. Thank you!
(The bots could be the ones who did the rescuing)
Optimus
He doesn't really mind how attached the kid seems to him—although he doesn't understand the reason behind it. So long as they don't try to follow him through the groundbridge on missions, everything's fine. He treats the kid the same way he treats the others for the most part, and that unfortunately includes the way he doesn't quite spent much time around them.
But even if they don't speak or talk too frequently, he'd take notice of their little mannerisms, and remember even the little moments shared with them, and he'd grow attached. He doesn't believe that keeping the kid here would be good for their development, so he asks Agent Fowler to keep him updated on when he finds a family to adopt them and give them a proper home.
He doesn't know how to entertain a kid, but he tries reading them children's books whenever he can. But if they don't show any interest in children's books, and seem more interested in any stories he has to tell, he'll tell them of his days as an archivist and nothing of the war because he was told that war stories are not suitable for young children. In general, he'll try his best to act as much of a father-figure as he can until you're under better care.
Ratchet
He didn't anticipate to find a human child in one of M.E.C.H's laboratories, and but neither did he care about the reason. In the aftermath of it all, he doesn't understand why they seem so attached to him when all he did was find them and take them out of that laboratory, and honestly he's peeved. He asks them to let him work in peace if they tend to bother him, but he wouldn't yell unless they really got on his nerves. So long as they don't tend to bother him, then they have the best chance for him to grow attached to them.
He'd try not to yell around them, and he'd try his best to be patient and understanding for their sake. But, it's only oh so long until one's patience runs dry, but even then he wouldn't yell at them. With how busy he is around the base, he hardly gets any time to sit down, but he tries to watch over them whenever he can. And when he does, he learns just how hard it is to raise a child.
Of course, after doing a bit of research on raising children, he resolves to keep them entertained with toys like stuffed animals, puzzles, books, paints, pillow forts, etc.. And while it's a hassle to clean up afterward, he considers it worth it so long as it keeps them happy.
It'll take time and patience, but after a long while he'll care about them, even if he doesn't openly admit it. If they have any trauma around being used solely for their powers, then he'll keep from asking them to do any healing for him, no matter how useful it may be. He'll leave them to decide on their own whether they'll use it to help or not.
Arcee
If they're a bit clingy toward her in the beginning, she's not gonna like that. She has no problems with hanging around them for a while, but when they start trying to follow her everywhere then that's where she draws the line. So long as they're well behaved (which is improbable, considering they're a child), there won't be many problems between them.
If they still act very frightened and scared around the base, she attempts to help them learn that no-one there is going to hurt them, and that they're in a safe place. They essentially bond over having been hurt and traumatized, and it doesn't take Arcee long to grow attached to them. If they have nightmares and whatnot because of the trauma they endured, she'll have some sort of idea on how to help with that. She'll try her best to serve as a support system for them.
With a bit of help from Raf, Jack, and Miko, she'll try getting them to play with toys, or to get them invested in some new hobbies to keep them entertained since stimulation plays an important developmental role.

Your OCs
:3c
!!!!oh sure i love showing them :]]]
Tumblr media
Augustine... auggie... my one and only gold watcher fellow. Effeminate bisexual ass mfer. His weapon of choice is a rapier but hardly uses it. Much prefers standing and taunting humans. Other hobbies include flirting with other gold watchers, sometimes humans too!
Tumblr media
Gabriel and his god Rogue.
Gabriel is a lovely old man who is a priest in his world. Genuinely a nice man who is pretty progressive compared to other priests/the clergy in general. He loves reading and gardening and when he's not leading sermons or in his church he has a lovely little garden by his rectory that he maintains.
Rogue is. Well. It's a God. One of the gods in its world (ive turned @a-rogue-god into the main lore/story blog if you're interested) unlike its siblings who have abandoned humanity, Rogue keeps an eye on them. Rogue comes off as scary but really it's just a jokester shithead. (That isn't to say rogue is never scary. If you try hurting Gabriel, Rogue Will make you experience Some Nightmares) believing in the rogue is kinda like a death sentence in Gabriel's world, but Gabriel gets a pass by and large simply because he's such a beloved nice figure
Tumblr media
Victor is. Um. Something.! They will sum up what they are as a vampire. They're not though. Their species do eat people, and I mean that literally. Victor just has a code where they eat the worst of humanity lol. You're an asshole? Well lol. You're their snack now! They're flirty and love interacting with people
Tumblr media
Romeo is my oldest oc I currently have any semblance of thoughts about. Idk what to do with him though! He's had a lot of story changes and whatnot. He loves writing poetry?? He loves flirting with women?? He's. Um. He's there certainly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MICHAEL!!! MICHAEL MICHAEL M-
Yay michael he's like. My favorite oc of all time I used to talk about him A LOT... all the time. He's an oc of the archangel michael. Um. He's very nice and very lovely. Kind of sad. Tired. Loves being on Earth and pretending to be a human. Um. Very comforting presence to be around. Come to him sad? Oh you bet your ass he's giving you the best hug in your LIFE!!!
Tumblr media
Mariel.... mariel is an interesting uh. Angel. It's kind of insane! Silly thing loves being taller than everyone else in the room! Will ramble on and on about some random object and how cool it is. Mariel is actually a cherub who somehow lost its mind so it tends to not be allowed around other cherubs and sticks to earth or other lower angels. Gaining Mariels trust is suuuper easy which is beneficial if you want to use it to get whatever you want :) it is quite quite naive.
Tumblr media
Mariel's true form holding Michael ^
I have a couple others but I don't like. My brain isn't as huge about them as these ones. But here's a bunch that I enjoy and like sharing info about ^^

Yuletide Ramblings
While I'm not religious by any measure, Christmas in Norway is honestly a decently secular experience once you tune out all the songs about Jesus and roses springing from barren fields and whatnot. This is to say that the holidays have always been about family and the people close to me. I may be overstepping my bounds a bit, but let's include my dear tumblr moots and general tumbl-o-sphere in the proceedings and talk a little bit about my 2023 on Tumblr.
If I'm going to be frank, and I want to unless the opportunity to be earnest should present itself, 2023 was a tough year for me. My ongoing journey to finding treatment for my depression stalled out, and my job search has similarly been quietly moved from the "top priority" box to the "it'll happen when it happens"-pile. I've been able to do this much thanks to the welfare systems in my neck of the woods, and although the process has kind of sucked along a number of axises, I do acknowledge it has helped me.
What has also helped me, though, is you guys. After starting using the platform in June of this year, I have found replete friendship and support, an almost overwhelming torrent of commisseration, enthusiasm and the particular brand of weird that seems to be the first language around here. Y'all have helped me get writing and stay writing, and really have honed my "take it easy, but take it" approach to a razor's edge.
While many parts of the internet are slowly but surely content-ifying themselves into a desolate wasteland of human connection, Tumblr keeps going with actually trying out the "social" part of this whole social media thing. Granted, that may be because of incompetence in trying to follow the trends on Tumblr's end. Still, I want to thank all y'all for keeping it personal, for keeping it weird, and keeping it as free of the scourge of "personal branding" as one could conceivably make a site full of artists and freelancers.
Cheerleading social media sites isn't really my bag, but I will concede that I've grown quite attached to the way Tumblr does things, and the weird arbitrary ways it prods us into acting. It's all down to the people, of course, and I've found quite a batch of good eggs on this here site. I almost don't want to shoutout specific users because I'm afraid I'm going to forget someone truly marvelous and even though there's every chance they'll never notice, I will know and the snub will eat at me.
That said, I do want to shout out a couple of people who've made my first half a year of tumblr great. @toribookworm22's timely asks have certainly helped me keep track of the weekdays, as well as helped me with a bunch of worldbuilding and minutiae. @dyrewrites and @teacupsandstarlight have both been great to talk to, and I would be in dereliction of my duties if I didn't at least mention the illustrious @scifimagpie in this context as well. @jeahreading and I seem to mostly pass as ships in the night, but sometimes the distant sound of a foghorn can be just the thing, to torture the metaphor a little. @that-weird-kid-from-your-school is also a joy to talk to, and her palpable enthusiasm is great.
Now for some people whose work I follow who I don't speak to much because I am intimidated by their skills. @canisalbus and their adorable gay dog-men never cease to fill my heart with love. @secondlina and their crows similarly also make me smile. @mlm-blues and @were--ralph have both done wonders for my self-esteem, and it is nice to see and share the enthusiasm for lads on occasion. @shyroism is mostly off-site what with the streaming, but they're definitely an underrated streamer who could do with some more eyeballs on their work. @fidgetspringer is an awesome punk, an awesome artist (shoutout @fidgetspringer-art,) and has a truly magnificent beast of a bird hound. @everythingfox is an endless source of cute animals which is an obvious lifesaver, @bearotonin-international is Important, @raccoon-central similarly does some heavy lifting for my mental health with their lil' grabby hands. @bodhrancomedy is a good lad who does good videos and do the acting real good. @sootchild has good art and I like it.
I'm running out of steam, which is a shame because there are a lot of people who deserve just heaps of praise heaped upon them on here. Hell, if you're still reading at this point, rest assured I think you're at the very least awesome and deserve good things happening to you.
In closing, I would like to once again express my delight and joy for how Tumblr has been in my first half year, and I hope the however long until I get maudling again is just as good if not even better!
