Ruin of Stars by Linsey Miller
Tumblr media
SPOILERS FOR “MASK OF SHADOWS”!
The thrilling conclusion to the Mask of Shadows duology that weaves a tale of magic, shadows, and most importantly, revenge.
As one of the Queen's elite assassins, Sal finally has the power, prestige, and permission to hunt down the lords who killed their family. But Sal still has to figure out who the culprits are. They must enlist the help of some old friends and enemies while ignoring a growing distaste for the queen and that the charming Elise is being held prisoner by her father.
But there's something terribly wrong in the north. Talk of the return of shadows, missing children, and magic abounds. As Sal takes out the people responsible for their ruined homeland, Sal learns secrets and truths that can't be forgotten.

Note
It’s recently occurred to me that the characters in your books are your OCs, and I LOVE to talk about my OCs, so is there anything about Lord Ruby (or the rest of the Left Hand) that wasn’t shared in the books, but you Know and want to share? 👀 (still obsessed with Mask of Shadows)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much of my little thoughts are lost to time (by which I mean in notebooks on my shelf), but thank you for asking this, @sarcastic-fandomtastic-dragon!
Here are some general facts. Some I’ve talked about before and some I maybe haven’t:
Emerald had a pet squirrel in Ruin of Stars. She nursed it back to health after Five nearly killed it, and trained it to sit on her shoulder and fetch small things for her.
If the series had been a trilogy (it should not have been, but regardless), then Ruby and Sal would have spent book two developing a very close mentor-mentee bond.
Isidora is pregnant in Ruin and her son is named Rodolfo.
Rodolfo/Ruby was Nicolas’s apprentice when he was still at school.
Maud’s the sole provider for her and her siblings, and one absolutely adores Sal.
Amethyst is not from Erlend or Alona. She auditioned for her role after traveling through Erlend after the war (which she fought in) and witnessing an assassination attempt on Isidora while visiting Nic’shome. Amethyst was the only one who noticed Emerald killing the assassin.
Emerald was 100% aware that Amethyst was there and saw, and it was not an accident that Amethyst was told about the auditions by her employer once the old Amethyst retired.
The world of Mask of Shadows is the same world as the book I wrote before Mask. That story took place in Berengard and involved a magical smallpox, eight murdered gods and one god who was too busy reading to get murdered, and the origin of the shadows (called whispers in Berengard).
Some of those who went on to create Erlend were kicked out of Berengard because they tried to conquer it after accidentally destroying their own country.
In this world, immortality is usually a punishment. The time is meant to be spent atoning for past crimes.
In Belle, Laurence and Estrel foresaw their deaths and planned for them. They did not plan for Emilie and Annette.
Laurence’s mother was at the executions.
Emilie and Annette should really open that box.
In What We Devour, Crown of Strangling Vines reveals that he’s the Vile that cursed the original holder of Carlow’s curse, and he’s being honest when he tells her that it shouldn’t have gone on for so long. He was friends with a wrought and her wife back before the Door and Moon were created when Noble and Vile still existed in the world, but they were killed during a disagreement about the nature of wrought. He believed all of their children had been killed and cursed the person who had killed them. That’s the origin of Carlow’s curse.
He was locked behind the Door before he realized how long and how horrible the curse would be.
Alistair's boyfriend was one of several people Alistair tried to get close to, but he doesn't understand that his social and political power is a threat even when he is not being actively threatening, so his relationships never lasted long.
Delmond Creek was far older than he let on, cursed by the Noble Crown of A Time For All Seasons, and he did legitimately hate Carlow.
Vines was one of the first Vile to make a deal with mortals to prevent them from devouring him and to stop mortals from being wiped out. He didn’t want mortals to die because he thought they were fun. Now, though, he understands why they try to live forever and just dreads the day his latest crop of mortal acquaintances dies.
Franziska Carlow is never going to die unless she wants to. Lorena's on thin ice (if the ice is immortality). Vines likes Basil but knows they would hate immortality.
Noble sought perfect order to the point of physically altering whatever wasn’t perfect according to them, and that included mortals in mind, body, and soul. There’s a lot of body horror in that lore.
The lore of the Noble and Vile overlaps with another series I want to write, and if I do get to write it, there will be nods to Vines and Carlow in there.
If ice cream existed in Devour, Basil’s favorite would be mint chip.
And ignore the poor writing but enjoy the terrible rhyming.

Morrigan Reads - A Series of Short Reviews
So, I did a lot of reading over the weekend (I was only 50 pages short of reading 5 books in 48 hours.) and I thought I’d do some quick little reviews on them!! Or at least the 4 I finished and picked out myself.
What I read: - Mask of Shadows - 4/5 - Ruin of Stars - 4/5 - The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea - 3/5 - A Thousand Steps into Night - 5/5
Reviews under the cut!
Mask of Shadows + Ruin of Stars
The premise of these is nothing earthshattering (theif makes it through a contest to become a special assassin to the Queen and get revenge on those who killed their family) but the books themselves were still very good!! The main character, Sal, is genderfluid, and his love interest in bi.  This book proves that you can’t use the excuse “but I can’t just say ‘genderfluid’ in a fantasy novel” as an excuse.  Sal never uses the word “genderfluid” to describe her gender, but we know that’s what they are.  They do use the word “fluid” and analogies to a river to describe it, and she also uses clothing’s gender roles to cue other in as to what pronouns to use for him.  He says so himself that that’s not ideal, but it works in the moment.
Anyways, it was a good duology that was both interesting and satisfying to read.  It was my first time reading a book with a gendefluid MC, and I was very happy with how it was done!! Using first person eliminated some confusion that might have come in multi-character scenes, and Sal is a very lovable character.  Plus a bi love interest, and trans and aro side characters to name a few. <3
The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea
I wasn’t such a big fan of this one, but I didn’t dislike it.  It was entertaining enough, and the characters were pretty good.  The main characters are a genderfluid pirate (Flora/Florian) and her love interest, a noblewoman named Evelyn.  Florian is charged with “guarding” Evelyn on the first part of their journey.  They start to fall in love with her, and begin to dread when the Nameless Captain will reveal the ship’s true purpose: a slave ship.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending, and I would have loved to get to know more about the Pirate Supreme (they intrigue me a lot, especially how they got to be in their position of power and their relationship with the Sea.  Also, their previous romance with the Witch, Xenobia.)  Yeah, okay, I just want a book about the Pirate Supreme, askdjasd.
But anyways, black + genderfluid main character, woman spies, nonbinary pirate character, who does not get nearly enough screen time.
A Thousand Steps into Night - Tracy Chee
Oh my god, I love this book.  This was by FAR my favorite of the 4, and I’m still not over it.  The book is very heavily inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore, and I love it.  The main character, Miuko is cursed to transform into a shouha, or malevolance demon, who can drain a person’s life force with a touch.  In order to stop her transformation, she goes on an adventure with the help of Geiki, a trickster magpie spirit, and meets a hell of a lot of awesome characters (human, spirit, and ghost) along the way.
The story is amazing, and so are the characters.  Also, no romance whatsoever, which is a nice change of pace.   Just some good old-fashioned going on a quest and becoming best friends.  The ending is nice and satisfying too!!
Nonbinary priests + spirits, trans characters, and lots of awesome, powerful female characters await.  And Geiki.  The best magpie spirit to ever walk the earth or fly above it.  <3  Oh, and the world is saved by a deadly kitten.  (No, I will not explain.  You’ll have to read and find out.)  And a little bit of unexpected time travel.

the second i saw the temple mural in rebels i knew i had to do this
[Image ID: A mural-style drawing of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka styled after the mural of the Mortis gods seen in Rebels. Ahsoka is on the right in her white robe and carrying her scepter, a morai perched on her shoulder. Obi wan is in the middle in his Jedi robes, one hand raised. The Jedi Order symbol is behind his head. Anakin stands on the right, with one half of his face obscured by his Darth Vader mask. His hand is clenched into a fist.]
Version without noise (along with me ranting about couple details I'm way too proud of) under the cut:
Tumblr media
The beams of light are emanating from the Jedi Order symbol for Obi-Wan, but for Anakin and Ahsoka they are centred on Obi-Wan's heart
The beams emanating from Obi-Wan all reach the edge of the canvas, but for Anakin and Ahsoka some are incomplete
The colours circling their hands are indicative of their lightsaber colours
The light circling Anakin's hand is tinged blue in Obi-Wan's direction
The light circling Ahsoka's hand is primarily white, but tinged in green, and tinged blue in Anakin's direction

xavier is just casually saying things like this in the office
tara for sure is squealing somewhere in the background
meanwhile, someone nero mutters, “some of us are single, you know…”
/
xavier doesn’t deny allegations when asked if you’re together
in fact, this man is so sly he fans the flames on purpose, but when you ask him about it he just goes: “hmmm? I told them we’re partners”
/
the next day, a “no flirting” sign is posted in the office
xavier is clueless, “who was flirting?” he asks, as he brings you a cup of iced coffee and mixes the gum syrup in front of you, drinking a bit of it himself before handing it to you
“we should share one coffee cup so there’s less trash”, he says, oblivious that tara is still giggling and the other men in the office want to shake him
/
somehow a sign also ends up at jeremiah’s flower shop
xavier asks where are the signs coming from???
jeremiah shrugs, “I don’t know about the one in your office, but I‘ve had that one for years”
