thinking about adult/approaching middle aged robin being encouraged by a friend or maybe her wife to get a neuropsych evaluation because her insurance covers it and it couldn’t hurt right? and robin finally gets diagnosed with autism and she just breaks down crying because you mean she’s not broken? she’s different but there’s been a reason this whole time? just. adult robin getting closure

no matter what your thoughts are on the new plots of stranger things, queerbaiting is still wrong.
the take away should not be “no queer characters get to have a happy ending”
lgbtq+ people deserve to be happy and have healthy relationships depicted in mainstream media

I wish the Stranger Things fandom would let me have my autistic Robin headcanon in peace.
Autistic fans can't say "I read Robin as having autism" without someone saying "or ADHD"
She can have both
She verbally says she doesn't have a strong grasp on social cues, which is an autistic trait.
Any traits she has that align with ADHD are more often than not ones that are also found in autism.
You can let someone see her as autistic without saying "or ADHD". You can say "and ADHD".
I have both ADHD and autism, and I have a really strong connection to her and Dustin because they have a lot of the traits I have. I hate seeing people putting off her autistic traits because she *also* exhibits ADHD traits. Let her have both.

I’ve been looking at Robin’s autistic traits (because hyperfixations) and more often than not I came across comments saying things along the lines of “Everyone is on the wider spectrum. All of the characters have autistic traits, doesn’t mean they are autistic. Robin isn’t any more so than the others.” I’d like to hear your opinion on this.
Thanks for the ask (: I've seen that kind of stuff too. Also I've seen people saying it's "stereotyping" to say she's autistic because having autistic traits doesn't automatically make you autistic, which is along the same lines. Which is just... No. So many people immediately thought Robin was autistic after that scene with Nancy where she talks about her issues with social ques, not because of stereotypes, but because it's relatable and because she explicitly said it instead of implying it. Obviously implying it doesn't mean you can't see yourself in it, but the fact that she said she feels like she's annoyed Nancy but can't work out why because of her issues with social ques explicitly leads me to believe that she's autistic.
There's also the sheer amount of traits she has too. She has issues with social ques, talks a lot when she's nervous and/or when she's with a girl she likes, sensory issues around certain materials, is blunt or "unhelpful", has issues with coordination and shall I go on? Having some of these traits doesn't make you autistic but it's the sheer amount of them as well. Other characters in the show may exhibit some traits but I don't think they do to the extent of Robin. Obviously you can have issues with social ques and not be autistic, but so many people relate to and see themselves in Robin and as I said, she has a lot of traits.
Also, side note here, these other characters could be autistic too. I've seen people think Johnathan, Will and Nancy are all autistic and I really don't see an issue with that. If someone sees themselves or their traits in those characters even if they're no more autistic than others, than that's completely fine. But for me, whilst I can see the arguements for these characters, I do feel as though Robin has the most "proof" but again, if you see yourselves in these characters then that's awesome.
And on the whole stereotyping thing, I just don't get that arguement. Saying autistic people have social and sensory issues isn't a stereotype, it's what autism is. It's also the fact that these comments aren't coming from autistic people as well. And a lot of people saying she's autistic are just seeing their own traits in her and not saying "all autistic people are like this", y'know?
Thanks again for the ask (: I'm so obsessed with Robin and Ronance so please send me asks on this stuff, I'm willing and ready to rant about it and I have so many thoughts. Have a good day!

Eddie sometimes went quiet.
Wayne noticed it after Eddie moved in. He didn't do it as much when he was little and Mary would bring him round, but here he was at ten years old completely silent. When Eddie was little Wayne assumed the boy was just shy, but now that he lived with Eddie he knew that sometimes a whole week would pass with not a peep from the young boy. M
The doctor said it might be a trauma response, might just be something he would do from time to time, either way, Eddie Munson, one of the loudest and dramatic kids Wayne had ever met would still be him, just nonverbal. They worked with a notebook but sometimes Eddie would get frustrated he wasn't being answered fast enough and they were running out of paper.
It was Wayne's buddy from work that presented a solution. "Have you tried sign language? My son was born deaf and Susan and I went to night classes so we could talk to the kid." So that's exactly what Wayne did, he moved his shifts to the day and spent his nights at the school learning to talk to his boy. On his days off he'd show Eddie what he'd learnt and slowly they were able to bridge the gap that the silence presented.
The silent days didn't stop as he grew older, his teachers didn't really understand and sometimes he'd end up in detention with a note saying he was being disrespectful. His friends understood though and enthusiastically asked Eddie to teach them sign language, they'd use it even when Eddie was happily chatting with them, they liked that they shared a 'secret' language from the bullies.
He hadn't had any silent days since Vecna, which Eddie thought was a miracle in itself given the circumstances. However, he woke up a couple months after spring break knowing what kind of day it was going to be. He felt frustrated with himself, he was supposed to be hanging out with Steve and Robin today and was worried with how they'd take it, especially Steve. They'd been dancing around each other's feelings lately and he didn't want to ruin everything before it even started. Resigned he grabbed a notebook and pen and headed to Family Video.
He'd spent ten minutes psyching himself up in the parking lot before heading inside, note written and ready explaining that no it wasn't anything Upside Down related, he just wouldn't be speaking today. The door's bell rings in his ear as he stops suddenly staring at the scene before him. Steve and Robin were, quite rapidly, signing at each other. Steve turns at the bell, smiling at Eddie.
"Eddie!"
Still in a bit of shock, Eddie signs on instinct, "You know sign?"
Steve has the same look of shock now, before his face breaks into an even bigger smile and signs back, "You know sign! You know sign, how, why?"
His hands are faster than his brain as he explains how he goes quiet sometimes, and Wayne and night classes and Hellfire before asking Steve how he and Robin know sign.
Steve looks bashful as he signs back, "Um, after Starcourt my hearing started to go, so Robin, ever the linguist, insisted we learn, which was actually very smart of her. I can still kinda hear but I get by mainly on lip reading."
Things started to make sense now to Eddie, how sometimes Steve seemed to just nod and smile at whatever the kids were saying, or would need things repeated to him. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Why didn't you tell me about going nonverbal? Robbie has days like that too."
"Didn't want you to think I was weird."
"I like that you're weird, I like you, Eds."
Eddie blushes at what he interprets is his sign name from Steve, the letter E and the sign for love combined.
"I like you too, Stevie." Eddie signs, the letter S mixed with the sign for heart.
Eddie may still have his silent days, but now he shares them with Steve, and they can sign the things he's not allowed to say out loud, making sure they both know they're loved.

i really hope somebody from the stranger things writers team confirms that robin is autistic. give that it’s the 80s and robin is a girl, it’s pretty likely that robin as a character isn’t formally diagnosed with autism, but it would mean the whole entire world so so many people including me if it was confirmed that she was written to be autistic

Stranger Things LBGTQ+ Headcanons
Tumblr media
Eddie Munson
Sexuality: Omniromantic, Grayasexual. He would like the term omniro because omni people typically have a large, defined preference. I think his preference would be man/masculine aligned people. He would shorthand and say gay/mlm if he wasn't in a place where he felt like having a long conversation about sexuality. I could also see him as polyamorous, though he would like a smaller polycule.
Gender Identity: Masculine Aligned, Non-Binary
Pronouns: He/Him, He/They, They/Them
Billy Hargrove
Sexuality: Queer. He would explain himself as Gay/Bi/Pan and I don't feel like he would be attached to any particular label. He really likes being in mlm relationships and polycules. Definitely polyamorous.
Gender Identity: Genderfluid, Non-Binary
Pronouns: He/They, He/They/She
***Note: I have been seeing posts about Trans Girl!Billy and I also absolutely love that headcanon. Any creators who work within that headcanon, I thank you for your content.
Steve Harrington
Sexuality: Bisexual. You cannot convince me that he does not experience attraction to men. I think he tends to lean toward women, but he definitely likes men. It took him a while to figure it out and come to terms with it, but Billy was definitely his gay awakening. He's very thankful for that. He would totally be cool with a poly relationship, it would just take him time to adjust to the idea if he had never considered it before.
Gender Identity: Cis Man
Pronouns: He/Him
Robin Buckley
Sexuality: Lesbian (is also lesbian in canon; confirmed). I could also see her using the terms Neptunic and Demisexual.
Gender Identity: Demi-girl, Non-Binary
Pronouns: She/They or They/Them
Nancy Wheeler
Sexuality: Bisexual
Gender Identity: Cis Woman
Pronouns: She/Her
Jonathan Byers
Sexuality: Hetero, LGBTQ Ally
Gender Identity: Cis Man
Pronouns: He/Him
Author's Note:

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments, but do not be rude please! we are allowed to have differences of opinion. okay i cannot shut up about them
steve being the one average intelligence friend among fucking geniuses (most of which are like fucking 13 year olds / all of which are younger than him) must be so damaging to his self esteem
because he’s only surrounded by child prodigies, a literal genius that’s fluent in several languages, and (probably the valedictorian if she wanted to be) a badass genius journalist, he has no example of what average intelligence is and just assumes he is stupid
which is not helped by the fact that everyone looks down on him/calls him an idiot/expects him to know everything!! so they just enforce this belief that he’s stupid and less than just because he’s not as intelligent as the rest of them
and then along comes eddie munson who failed senior year twice, yet is an amazing storyteller and genius DM, who knows about all these cool things and guess what? dustin looks up to him!
and steve knows dustin isn’t replacing him but dustin thinking he was cool was one of the only things holding his facade together
and then robin is only thinking about vickie and of course steve wants to help and he listens and gives advice, but robin was the only one who was around, who hung out with him, who listened
and max is isolating herself, and lucas has basketball and hellfire, and he doesn’t think nancy would ever want to be friends, so it’s. just him.
and then
and THEN
steve is walking through the upside down with eddie munson, and eddie references something he doesn’t get, and steve expresses his confusion and is prepared to be made fun of- but eddie just. tells him? explains it to him?
and it catches him off guard because no one has done that before, even as King Steve carol would roll her eyes and tommy would laugh whenever he asked them something. whenever he asked questions in class (which was rarely) the teachers told him he should’ve been paying attention but he was- he just didn’t get it
so steve tests it again later on and the same thing happens- even in front of the others, when steve asks a question eddie just tells him without poking fun and it’s… it’s really nice actually
once vecna is defeated and everyone survives (bc fuck you) steve continues to badger eddie with questions, looks to him whenever he doesn’t understand what’s going on and eddie will immediately explain it in a way he can understand
a while after they become good friends, steve just has to ask.
“does it get annoying?”
“…does what get annoying?”
“me asking you about stuff all the time”
but eddie just smiles at him, tells him how he actually loves that steve asks because it means he’s engaged and interested, when eddie is used to people getting bored of his rants/tirades
he tells steve that he loves explaining things to him, loves that he listens and pays attention and steve realizes oh, we’re kind of perfect for each other aren’t we?
he thinks he’s okay with that. especially if eddie keeps smiling at him and telling him about anything and everything he wants to

Autistic eddie munson this, autistic robin Buckley that. What about autistic steve Harrington? What about the little audhd kid who wasn't in a safe place, a safe home, to unmask. To be born how you are and sniffed out that something is wrong with you, to spend hours in the bathroom, alone. Learning how to mimic tone and expressions.
To spend years masking until when the day comes where you have a best friend just like you, a boyfriend, a brother, just like you. To work that mask off of yourself, and finally see who you are. Crying in the same mirror you practiced in because you dont recognize yourself happy, safe, and loved.

he tried it once already.
"hey stevie! wanna hang out sometime? maybe catch a movie?"
"sure, sounds great, ed's!"
it was a date, he'd planned it all himself! so why was steve telling him about the cute person he saw the other day?
he tries again, maybe the first date wasn't good enough and that was steve's way of telling him.
"steve! uhm. can we try again? how about we go on a picnic?"
and steve looks confused, but he agrees happily anyways. "awh! a picnic sounds great ed! i'll be there."
eddie thinks this is it, but the day after the picnic dustin is at family video, pestering steve about how he needs to start dating again. and he deflates when steve sighs "i know, no one wants to take me out though!" and shrugs, and eddie has to hold in the "hey!" that wants to come out of his mouth.
robin must notice this internal struggle because she pulls him into the back. "dude, what gives?"
"i've been on TWO dates with him, rob! TWO!"
and robin sighs, "have you told him they're dates?"
eddie blanches. "what?"
"he thinks you want to hang out just as friends."
"i've held his hand though!"
"we literally share a bed eddie. just tell him straight up!"
eddie sighs.
that wasn't apart of his plan.
