"For fuck's sake."
Jim already has a headache and apparently it's gonna get much worse. He pours himself a cup of the shittiest coffee in Hawkins and turns to the kid sitting in front of his desk.
"What happened, kid?" he asks. "Why would you do that?"
Billy Hargrove reeks of cheap liquor, trouble and the metallic smell of blood. His lip is split and he looks like he hasn't slept in a week or so.
Billy doesn't answer, just glares at him.
"Breakin' and entering is no joke," Jim starts again. He sounds as pissed off as he feels, because he still has Mrs. Carters shrill voice in his ear, calling from Loch Nora about a burglar, about her fancy neighborhood getting sullied.
"I didn't do shit," Billy protests. "I…was just…"
He falls silent, mouth snapping shout like he regrets he even said a word.
"What?" Jim probes, because there's a piece of the puzzle missing.
Billy shakes his head, lips thin.
"Should I call the Harrington's and ask if you were invited?" Jim knows he's an asshole, but it comes more naturally to him than being nice.
Something flashes across Billy's face and his tan gets drained out by miserable paleness.
"Don't call them," Billy says, fingers digging into his thigh so hard his knuckles turn white.
"So, let's try again," Jim says, taking another sip from the dishwater the station claims is coffee.
"The key's under the flower pot," Billy mumbles.
Jim raises a brow. "And you know that why?"
Billy's eyes shoot dagger at him, the way only a pissed of teenager can look at an adult.
"Steve put it there for me," he says lowly, like it's a secret, something dirty and shameful you hide under your bed. "In case I need a place to go to…"
"So, you're pals?" Jim asks, huffing a laugh in disbelief. "Why didn't you say so?"
Billy's jaw tightens.
"Nobody knows," he finally says. His fingers find his necklace, tugging at the pendant. "It's better that way."
Jim is close to crack a joke about dramatic teenagers, but Billy's blue eyes are dark and there's a sadness there that doesn't belong to someone so young.
Whatever it is, Jim gets another piece of a puzzle - but apparently they're playing Hide and Seek.
"Okay," he says after a while. He'll put a stamp on the report, saying Confidential or similar shit. "You can go."
Surprise makes Billy look softer, less hurt. "What?"
Jim shrugs. "I've heard enough. Or do you want me to lock you up?"
It's a joke, but his throat clogs up when he looks down on Billy's file and sees that the kid had already spend a night the drunk tank a few weeks ago.
"Whatever, Chief." Billy lifts his hands. "I'm outta here, then."
The kid is halfway through the door, when it hits Jim. Billy can't go back to Loch Nora right now. Mrs. Carter is probably on guard.
"If you still need a place to stay, you can sleep in the break room," Jim offers. "The couch is a disaster though."
Billy stands in the doorway, eyes wide. He plays it cool when he catches himself.
"If I don't have to drink that shit." He points at the coffee. Jim can't blame him. Although 1 am is way too late to get cheeky.
"Just go to bed," Jim grumbles.
Billy salutes him. Jim can see his shoulders sinking, his whole body a bit less tense. Maybe he'll get them donuts for breakfast.

Reality collision where Billy shows up to school one day with a baby. No one knows who the kid is or why Billy showed up with him; but he waits to corner Steve in the parking lot. Shoves the baby into his arms unceremoniously all - "Take your spawn Harrington."
Steve's never seen this baby in his life, and if anything it looks like Billy. Brown hair sure, but the eyes,chin, and those ears are all Hargrove. He's confused even more when Billy starts babbling about holes opening up on the walls and what sounds like demo-dogs, which he shouldn't even know about!
One thing he is sure of, he definitely didn't get attacked by a demo-dog last night or run into Billy's car out near the powerplant. He definitely didn't give Billy this baby and ask him to take care of it, but someone did.
AKA Billy and Steve get stuck temporarily taking care of their alternate reality baby and it brings them together.

season 2 canon divergence where instead of just blowing Max off when she doesn’t show at the end of the day Billy does actually go looking for her.
But instead he finds El, fresh off seeing Mike and Max in the gym and nursing that bitter little sting. So when Billy's like, "Hey kid, you seen a loudmouth redhead around?" she lies and says no.
Billy quickly picks up that this kid is pretty odd and he's like, "You good? Where are your parents?"
"Papa's dead. I live with Jim now. He said not to leave the cabin. No one’s supposed to know." says El, and big ol alarm bells go off in Billy’s head.
"Can't belive I'm saying this, but I think we need to go to the police." he says.
"Jim's a police man."
Of course he fucking is. Creepy fucking nowheres-ville, ass-backwards goddamn town. "Okay, what about your mom? Any idea where she is?"
So Billy helps her track her mom down and then goes with her to Chicago to find her sister, because something absolutely fucked is clearly going on, and then he's in on the Hawkins happenings.
They show up at the Byers together and him and Max are like, "What are you doing here?!"

It happens at lunch. Tommy suddenly chokes on his drink. Steve pats his back, laughing at Tommy's red face when he gets his own spitefulness returned to himself. He stares at Billy and swallows his sandwich the wrong way, starting to cough.
It's the end of March and way too cold outside. Despite that Billy wears a crop top, showing off his blond happy trail and abs that are still tanned as if they're in California.
Carol sighs, putting on new lipstick. "Jesus, you guys are hopeless. Hey Billy!"
She waves at him. Billy gives her a short nod before setting down his tray next to her.
"What's up, losers?" He grins and it's like the sun has just risen inside the cafeteria. His nails are painted black, Steve notices absently. The crop top reveals so much of Billy's skin and for the first time Steve realizes that Billy's got freckles everywhere.
"Earth to Harrington," Billy says, clapping his hand in front of him.
Carol laughs so hard there are tears in her eyes and judging from Billy's pissed off face it's not the first time he addressed Steve.
"What?" Steve asks dumbly. From the corner of his eyes he can see Tommy's dreamy expression. At least he's not the only one who has gotten a bit distracted.
"Boys are so stupid," Carol wheezes. Billy glares at her, but there's a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
"You wanna hang out after school?" Billy says slowly like he's not sure Steve is listening. But Steve is listening. It's just that Billy is so distracting.
Carol kicks him under the table.
"Fuck," Steve groans.
Billy tilts his head, raising a brow.
"I mean yes," Steve says, neck burning.
"Cool," Billy answers, leaning a bit closer. "We can also do your idea," he whispers.
Steve's mouth hangs open. Carol clutches her belly, shaking with laughter. Billy smirks.
The bell rings. Tommy blinks. "What's goin' on?"

Eddie 'doomed by the narrative' Munson was such a great character. I wish they'd explored his life more. I look at characters like that and wonder how they would've interacted with other characters. What would be the dynamic between Eddie and Argyle? What would Eddie's relationship with Eleven be like? Would Eddie and Jonathan get along? If Billy was alive, what would that dynamic be like? Actually, what did Eddie think of Billy when they were in school together? All of these relationships, sub-plots, and character arcs that could have formed.
