LCU Rewatch: Ragnarok Edition

My previously undying passion for MCU Loki has been waning lately. The Loki Series better bring it back or else…I’ll cry or something

No amount of words could describe how much I adore this movie, so my notes will be brief (I lied)

I will say they often took the humor too far for sincerity, mischaracterized Loki frequently, and made Thor too silly at times. This movie still hits different though

Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin is still one of the best soundtrack choices in movie history

If I wrote for Marvel I’d have introduced Amora in Thor the Dark World, had her present for Ragnarok, and given she and Loki an enemies/ lovers dynamic. I still would have introduced Sylvie as the love interest for TVA Loki, because it would be fucking hilarious if he managed to get with both Enchantresses in different timelines. Bonus points if Sylvie and Amora meet, and Amora chases Sylvie around with a knife (accusing her of stealing her Enchantress gig) so TVA Loki tries to help Sylvie by chasing Amora around with a knife, which prompts Sacred Timeline Loki to chase TVA Loki with a knife in the hopes of helping Amora. (Thor is in the background, crying.)

The way Thor places his hammer on enemies to immobilize them hahfjgkfkh

I headcanon that Loki doesn’t exclusively write and/or put on plays about himself, but Thor happened to show up on one such day where a play about Loki was being performed. Loki’s quite narcissistic and self obsessed, but it’s not his defining character trait. Knowing Loki’s character voice and sense of humor, (“little blue baby icicle”) he absolutely wrote that play himself too. (Also because I doubt Odin was able to hear “I didn’t do it for him” which confirmed Thor’s suspicions, too)

Loki pouted when Thor said he looked greasy and weaseley awww you’re gorgeous to meeeee

Loki focused on arts and infrastructure and decreased military intervention and imperialism…good bean. I guess they were trying to paint him as lazy or vain, but I just saw character growth. They went from attempting to genocide their own species and take over the world to at least claiming “it is best to respect our neighbors’ freedom” I’m so proud of them

No one in the Theatre troupe was even slightly surprised Loki was pretending to be Odin. They were probably the first to notice lmao.

Loki’s character voice is off in this movie, but it got better again in the Series

I have a gut instinct Loki is a passionate tea drinker. I just know she inhales the stuff. But he would also love coffee. So basically they would just like caffeine

Im so torn about Thor’s character development. On one hand, his “I don’t need a hammer, my power and strength come from within” arc is fascinating and profound, but his character growth was ruined and ignored later…

I like Hulk and Thor’s friendship. Theyre both angry, aggressive people who punch their problems out, so they understand each other, but it’s that same similarity that causes conflict between them. (And then there’s Loki, who thinks he’s not hot headed but obviously is, and always at the worst times. Loki’s anger is quieter, deeper, subtler, but it’s always bubbling, one crisis away from boiling over and causing irreparable damage. However, he also learns to put that anger to use “trust my rage”) Hulk is like fire, Thor is like fire, Loki is like water. Tempestuous and changeable.

Aaahhhhh yes, possibly *the* sexiest fight scene in cinematic history 😏 followed by one of the most jawdroppingly beautiful sequences of Cinematography. If you catch me rewinding every 3 seconds, no you didn’t

Sylvie and Valkyrie would be the most chaotic and feral team to grace a screen since…ever. Bonus if they fight each other at some point, because the homoeroticism would be incalculable

I do not buy that Loki actually genuinely tried to kill Thor before the events of Thor 1. Bluffs, threats, rambunctious mischief? Absolutely. But in my opinion, to imply that Loki regularly tried to kill Thor as a child? blatantly goes against her previous characterization. They really love painting him as a cold blooded serial killer don’t they? 😐 (he’s not a psychopath, and I’m sick of writers, other characters, and even his own fans treating him that way)

even in the MCU Loki sees his life as a tragic story to be told. Writes a play about it, refers to himself as a monster children are told about at night, notes the “poeticism” of Odin’s death potentially splitting he and Thor apart (especially because Frigga’s death brought them together) etc. This motif is taken further in the series, and needless to say, he’s literally the God of Stories in the comics.

Holy Ravioli the scene before “let’s do get help” is depressingly good. “Do you truly think so little of me?” “Loki, I thought the world of you.” Loki’s visible heartbreak when Thor agrees they should never see each other again? How the fuck did we go from “Loki tries to kill Thor once a week lol” to this…This movie is such a mixed bag when it comes to Loki’s characterization. Almost feels like there are two different versions of Loki in the writers room.

Thor more or less says “you’re too much for me” and Loki hears “I’m not enough for you”

Can we talk about this scene? Either Loki planned to betray Thor prior and was heartbroken because his fears that Thor no longer wanted him around were confirmed, confirming his decision, or he hoped that Thor would tell him to stay and was heartbroken because he doesn’t. Either way, Loki has just suffered what he sees as a rejection or abandonment, and that is what triggers or justifies his backstabbing behavior. BPD much?

“Life is about change, but you just want to stay the same” the meta level of Loki, a dynamic, tempestuous, mercurial, fluid character being told that his chaos is becoming predictable and he doesn’t truly want to change??? That’s good writing there.

I also suspect WHY he doesn’t want to change. toxic patterns of betraying and pushing people away to avoid/punish rejection and that hesitance to trust or get emotionally attached can feel like the only way to keep yourself safe, and you can get addicted to isolation and disappointment to the point where tragedy becomes your identity. Building a new identity is scary.

“You’ll always be the god of mischief, but you could be more!” “I’m the god of mischief, always have been, always will be” “You can be anything, anyone you want to be!” and so on

Loki’s an introverted loner who craves being the center of attention in any social situation. That’s a difficult mix to reconcile (I know too well) Also being a natural leader and original thinker yet not being taken seriously by anyone…I also get that

It feels like someone is missing from this movie, and at first I thought Jane, then had the startling realization that it could be Amora

Sylvie hiding from the TVA in Ragnarok would make a great episode of What If

As a writer, I still can’t decide if Thor should have become king or not…

The dynamic between Thor and Hela is intriguing, tragic, and narratively rich. If Loki and Hela are parallels, Hela and Thor are foils.

The only thing that could have made Loki’s Dramatic Entrance better would be if Lady Gaga started blaring.

I still get chills when Loki smiles and Thor reappears and Immigrant Song starts playing

Loki and Sylvie are frost giants but are also associated with fire, as the Norse God Loki sometimes is. One of my favorite details.

You sat at a table across from Loki, thinking about his proposition. Would this really be a good idea? You and Loki...pretend to be together? You help him gain more trust from the world; he helps you get noticed by the man you're crushing on.

You set your hands out on the table and looked around the party, making sure no one could hear your conversation. Quickly, you looked back at Loki, surveying his body language. He was serious; he wants to regain the trust he lost all those years ago and live peacefully in New Asgard with Thor and the other Asgardians. Though it has been a few years now, he was still in the same place of citizens, Asgardian and Midgardian alike, not trusting him and afraid of looking at him ever-so strangely.

"It is an absurd plan," You declared.

He thought this plan was foolproof. News outlets everywhere would deem both of you exactly what you want: Loki, trustworthy; you, desirable. "Whatever should you have to lose?" He egged on.

With a few more moments of silence, you smirked at him. "Okay," You said.

A smile grew on Loki's face as well. He reached out and grabbed your hands, leading you away from the table and into the middle of the crowd gathering around the dance floor. "If this is to work," Loki leaned in to whisper into your ear as all eyes were on the two of you. "We must appear madly in love."

You tried not to pay attention to the people watching the two of you, but it was difficult. Avengers and random patrons both were confused; no one was aware that you two had any interest in each other at all. You danced with Loki to the song playing as other couples around did the same, and you guys just stared at each other as you danced. You knew there would be some stressful conversations come morning, but you couldn't think about that right now. You had to keep your focus on this ruse for the night.

You sat at the breakfast bar in the kitchen in the Compound the next morning, a bit concerned that no one had come to ask you about this new relationship. You were reading the headlines on Twitter, seeing that the plan was working so far. People wanted to know more about this relationship; how it came to be, why you are together, when it happened; they wanted more. But you needed to talk with Loki again before either of you spoke to any press.

"So, Loki, huh?" Steve asked as he opened the fridge from across you. "When did that happen?"

"It's...new," You said carefully. "We decided last night to go public. It was about time," You told him.

Steve chuckled as he turned around with some fruit in his hand. "It was definitely a surprise to all of us. How's it going with him?" He asked. He didn't want to seem pushy, but Steve was curious. And, of course, he would report back to the other Avengers once he got the answers.

"Very well," You said. Keep it short and sweet; nothing can go wrong there. "I wasn't expecting it to blow up online, but I guess more people are interested in us than I thought. People are assuming so many things," You said, still vague.

Before Steve could ask anything more, Thor boomed his way into the kitchen. "Ah, Captain, I wanted to thank you for letting us stay here overnight before we head back to New Asgard!" He patted Steve on the back. "Oh!" Thor said as he turned around and saw you. "Good morning. Gave us quite a surprise last night, hmm?" Thor raised his eyebrow.

"I guess so," You said. "I'm sorry we didn't tell you, Thor," You apologized.

"Nonsense!" Thor demanded. "I'm just glad you two are happy. Maybe now that people see you and Loki together, they will realize he has changed. Especially if the rest of us approve?" He posed the question, and Steve nodded in agreement.

"It would be nice," Steve added. "I'm sure it would make things easier over in Asgard."

Thor laughed. "He's still a trickster; the people know that! Oh, good morning, brother," Thor stopped as Loki walked into the kitchen as well.

"Good morning," Loki greeted Thor and Steve, then smiled when he saw you. "Good morning, love," He said and walked over to stand next to you. "We will be heading back to New Asgard this morning; you must come visit soon, my dear," Loki commented.

You looked over your shoulder at his slight smile. "I would love that."

Steve nodded to you as he exited the kitchen, not interrupting your conversation with Loki. You were sure he would run off to tell the others about what you told him, but that may make it seem even more real with the gossip already spreading. Thor followed Steve after he grabbed something else out of the fridge, not saying anything as he left.

"We need to discuss this arrangement," You said in a hushed voice to Loki. Loki raised his eyebrow as he waited for you to elaborate, not speaking. "We have to play the part fully if we want this to work. The Avengers have some important appearances coming up that I have to attend, and you should go with me."

"How many?" Loki inquired.

You thought for a moment. "Depending on how long this ruse goes on, it could change. But right now, five."

"I will come to three," Loki said, and you rolled your eyes in response. "I am not one that likes to attend events like that. And before you say anything, I attended last night as a favor to Thor," Loki explained.

"So you'll go as a favor to Thor, but not me?" You asked.

"He is my brother. He has priority right now," Loki shrugged and turned so he was leaning against the breakfast bar with his arms crossed. "But I will compromise at three events."

You narrowed your eyes. "Four."

"Three."

You sighed. "Fine, but I'm sure I'll talk you into one more," You smirked. Before Loki could reject that idea, you grabbed your things and walked out of the kitchen and to the common room.

Loki followed, huffing at you slightly. He made sure no one was around to hear the rest of this conversation as it was continued into the common room. "In compromise, you will come visit Asgard and appear at a few events with Thor and me, as well. I do not have a schedule yet, but once I know, I will pass it on to you."

"I know that isn't meant to sound appealing to me, but I really do want to visit Asgard," You told him, and Loki didn't care whether you were interested in it or not; he just wanted you to show up. With Loki trying to gain more trust and currently at a standstill, he figured some events in Asgard would be wise. One of their picnic days, a market, and something else he would come up with. If, after only the announcement and a few dances together rallied all the social media and news outlets, a few events together were sure to send the two of you over the line, and the people would have no choice but to trust Loki again.

He just wanted to have redemption for the mistake in New York and show people that he has truly changed. Thor and the rest of the Avengers saw it, but everyone on the outside was still cautious and suspicious of him, and rightfully so. He needed to prove to them that he had changed, and with you by his side, how could they not believe him?

This ruse went on longer than either you or Loki thought it would. Initially, you two thought at most it would be two months. Now, four months later, here you are and still going with this. The original plan was for Loki to attend three Avengers events with you, and somehow, he managed to come to every single one by your side; even the ones that popped up with little warning, he was there. And you had come to enjoy the random promenading through Asgard and getting to know the people there, too. Without even realizing it, people all over the world had grown to love you and Loki together.

It was a bit overwhelming at first, especially for Loki. For someone who has been through so much, not much intimidated him anymore, but once he realized how popular you were among the Avengers' fans, it surprised him. Some fans were really intense and even a bit aggressive about this relationship and threatening things if it ended poorly, which only worried the two of you even more. But since the world was still wary about Loki, and your crush had yet to do anything, you two just continued with this ruse; why not?

Tonight was a very important night for the Avengers to attend. Tony Stark was hosting a charity gala, and hundreds of people would be there; it was one of the dead-set events that you and Loki agreed on going to together if the ruse was still going on. Even if the ruse was over, both of you had to be there. It was one of the few events that Tony asked (and expected) all of his superhero friends to be at, as it is the most important party he throws every year.

You sat at your designated table with Loki, Thor, Steve, Sam, and Natasha. All six of you were conversing on random conversations topics as you snacked on your food in front of you. Steve asked you how your relationship was going, and you managed to change the subject fairly quickly to not direct more attention to the ruse.

The rest of the table was confused why you turned the subject away from you and Loki so quickly, but were smart enough not to mention it. After "hiding" it for so long, they knew you and Loki would discuss your relationship only on your terms and never went into too much detail. But in reality, just earlier this week, the two of you had a disagreement, and both have refused to apologize. You agreed to save face for this event and to spare yourself from Tony's anger if things went awry, but it was clear you were both uncomfortable and upset. It was a stupid disagreement, really, much like how this ruse was a stupid idea.

Your one rule to yourself was to not think of Loki as anything other than a friend, and your mind and heart were betraying you, which caused you to take that frustration out on Loki himself. You weren't sure what set off Loki's anger, but you didn't care. You lost it when he barged into your room without knocking and interrupted your concentration, and you had warned him many times before not to do that. It was an accident on Loki's part, but it caused an explosion between the two of you, and it's already been five days since, with no reconciling.

Pushing the food around on your plate with your fork, you tried to zone out of the conversations at your table and the surrounding tables. You were so focused on your plate that you didn't hear Loki lean over and say your name until he tapped your shoulder. "Dear?" Loki asked again after the tap, and you looked up.

"Oh, sorry, yes?" You responded quickly.

"Are you all right?"

You nodded and set your fork down next to your plate. "Yes, just stuck in my own head."

Loki took a deep breath. "I was going to ask if you wanted to dance while there's a big group," Loki gestured to the center of the room, with Tony and Pepper in the middle of a bunch of other couples.

You peered around him and watched the couples sway for a few moments before conjuring up a sweet smile. "I would love to."

Loki grabbed your hand and led you out to the dance floor, and you two instinctively put your arms around one another. You swayed to the music in silence until Loki cleared his throat. "I think we should talk."

You cocked your head to the side. "About?"

"Our argument the other day. Now, I'm not quite sure what set us off, but I do know I intruded without making myself known, and I apologize for that. I know you asked me not to, but it slipped my mind," Loki explained.

You took a deep breath and nodded. "Thank you. I agree, I'm not positive what blew us up, and I apologize, too,"

Loki lifted his chin as he looked at you. "Though, I do think you overreacted a bit."

"Excuse me?" You asked, surprised.

He shrugged, not thinking what he said had anything wrong with it. "You must agree there was a little bit of an overreaction. I apologized when I realized I busted in, but it immediately went into a screaming match. It all seemed like a lot in so little time."

You scoffed and rolled your eyes. "Are you kidding me? You're telling me I overreacted?" You asked.

"I am," Loki said cautiously. "I believe I may have made a mistake saying that."

"I did not overreact!" You said harshly under your breath. "You're being ridiculous. We could have just left it at apologizing, but no, you had to keep it going," You said.

Loki sighed. "This is exactly what I meant by overreacting. You're doing it again."

You were stunned by what Loki was telling you, and you dropped your hands from around him with your jaw open. Quickly, you shook your head and took a deep breath to calm yourself. "I need some air," You said as you pulled away from him and rushed through the crowd to the open door on the side of the building.

Since this event was so large and important, this venue was the same way. You didn't know this venue and tried not to stray too far from the door so that you wouldn't get lost. But once you realized Loki was chasing after you, you made your way into the dark garden maze only lit by lanterns every so often.

Loki yelled your name as he jogged into the maze close on your tail. "Darling!" He shouted a few more times. "Come back to the party."

You didn't listen to him. "Stop walking!" He called.

"Stop following me!"

"I forbid you to go any further," Loki said, and he was now catching up to you.

You rolled your eyes again, even though Loki couldn't see it. "You cannot tell me what to do."

Loki was frustrated now and fully stood by his statement earlier that you were overreacting. It probably wasn't his best idea to bring that up now, though. "Will you not listen?" He huffed and grabbed your hand, turning you around to face him. You didn't say anything; you weren't even sure what you would say, but instead just stared at him. After a few seconds of silence, Loki pulled your hand, and effectively your body, closer to him and kissed you.

Quickly, he pulled away and didn't make eye contact. "My most sincere apologies. I-" He paused, not sure what to say now. He looked down and noticed your shoe was untied and diverted your attention toward that. "Ah, I must have stepped on your shoe; let me get that," Loki said, and before you could object, he knelt down to re-tie your shoe.

As Loki got down on his one knee, both of you jumped when you heard a squeal come from someone not too far away.

At the same time, both of your heads turned to see where the scream came from. A woman was standing at the corner of the maze, staring at you with her hands shaking in front of her, holding a phone in one hand. You both winced when a flash went off, and Loki stood up immediately, without tying your shoe. Internally, you groaned, recognizing the woman and not wanting to deal with her right now, especially with all that just happened in a span of two minutes.

She scurried up to you and Loki with a big smile still present on her face. "I knew it! I knew this is why I saw you guys leave the party!" She said, Loki cringing when he heard her high-pitched voice. Neither of you said anything in response and looked a little confused, but she didn't notice. "So, did you say yes? When's the wedding?" She asked you, her phone obviously recording.

Your head turned to look at Loki with wide eyes, and his reaction was the exact same. "Well, Miss-"

"Emily!" She answered for him when it took him more than a second to say her name. "I'm sure they have told you about me. I run the Avenger's biggest fan and update page online."

Loki nodded, pretending to know all about it. "But of course," He flashed a fake smile.

"So?" She egged you on.

You took a moment to answer, thinking about the smartest way to say it. "Emily," You started in a hushed tone.

She put her phone by her side when she heard your tone of voice. "Oh, my gosh, I totally interrupted, didn't I?" She gasped. "I'm so sorry! I was just so excited; you two have been the hot topic online since you went public with your relationship," She said, and her hand cupped her mouth as she leaned in closer to you like Loki wasn't there. "We've all sworn that if he breaks your heart, he'll definitely regret it," She laughed, but you knew she was serious. You didn't admit it to many people, but you did read her posts and the forums; it was too interesting not to! And you knew that if you and Loki broke up and ended out of nowhere, people would be angry.

Loki could still hear her but pretended not to. Once she stepped back from you a bit, he brushed his hands down the front of his suit, ready to break the not-so-good news to her. "Miss Emily, it-"

"Yes, Loki and I are getting married," You blurted out.

As Emily's smile grew even bigger on her face, if that was even possible, Loki's head snapped towards you with a look on his face that said, we are what?

"I knew it!" She squealed again and pulled her phone back out to take another picture of the happy couple. "I can't wait to tell everyone! They're going to be so excited!"

You put your hand up as Emily started to type on her phone and continued to talk about the excitement. "Emily," You said calmly, and she stopped mid-sentence to look back up at you. "This just happened, do not tell anyone until we're ready, okay?" You said, friendly but serious.

Emily nodded as fast as she could, now holding her phone close to her chest. "I promise! I'll save everything until you guys are ready; I wouldn't want to hurt you!" She said, continuing to nod. "But can I see the ring?"

You looked at your bare hands, and Emily's face fell. "Hmm, in the surprise, we must have dropped it. Do you see the ring, Loki?" You directed at him, hoping he would understand his cue.

Loki caught right on, even if he was a little taken back from everything going on. "Actually, yes, I do," He said and bent down again. "You almost stepped on it," Loki hid his hand behind your shoe and conjured up a small ring, and with Emily's head spinning a million miles an hour, she didn't notice the small flash of green. "Here we go, darling," Loki said as he grabbed your hand and put the ring on your finger.

You had to give credit where credit is due; for such short notice, Loki did a nice job with the ring.

Emily squealed again as another flash came out of her phone, capturing pictures of Loki putting the ring on you and just your hand out in front of you. After a few more photos, you put your hand up again. "Remember, Emily, don't post anything until we do, okay?" You reminded her once more.

"Of course!" She said, still shaking from the announcement.

"Now, Loki and I are going to take a few more minutes of fresh air. I suggest you go back to the party, they'll be bringing out dessert soon, and Stark got some good caterers this year," You smiled sweetly, and Emily nodded. You two said your goodbyes, and Loki gave an awkward wave, and she finally skipped out of the maze and into the party.

Once Loki was certain no one was in earshot, he turned his whole body to you and started stumbling over words to find what to say. In all the time you had seen Loki, whether fighting against him or working with him, you had never seen him at a loss for words. You let him work through his thoughts, and he eventually started right at you as he said, "We're getting married?" He shouted in a whisper, but it was loud enough that it got the point across. "Didn't we just go from arguing?"

You grabbed his hand to get him to look at you and to take a deep breath. "I know, it was a bit of an impulse decision. But you heard her; she runs the Avenger's gossip site. It may not be called that, but that's what it is. If I told her we weren't getting married and instead breaking up, people would go wild," You explained to him.

"I can handle them; I'm a god," He reminded you, pulling his hand back and crossing his arms.

"Maybe some, but I've seen the site, Loki. She has millions of followers, and the posts get so many hits that I can't even compute a number," You said. "I would rather not have to deal with backlash against you again."

Loki sighed and turned around, running his hands through his hair, still not sure what you got yourselves into. "What about your crush?" Loki asked.

You shrugged. "Not important anymore," You said. Your crush hadn't changed at all since you and Loki "got together," the desirable jealousy factor didn't work as you two intended. "Besides, I would rather you still be on the team without hoards of Avengers’ fans trying to end you. I know, you're a god, but you haven't read these posts," You told him.

Loki's arms were crossed again, but he was much calmer now. "You know me; you don't have to marry me. I'll be fine."

"No, we're going to do this," You shook your head, sure of yourself.

"I guess we're going through with this, then," Loki nodded once, confirming for both of you.

You nodded back at him. "We are."

Loki didn't say anything more but grabbed your hand and pulled you close to him so he could kiss your cheek. It was weird; you both agreed that this fake relationship would not include any PDA, but now it would have to be even more believable. He still held your hand and slowly led you out of the maze and back to the party.

Once back at your table, all your friends wanted to make sure both you and Loki were okay after they saw you both run out of the venue. You decided to just cut out the middleman. Nodding, you smiled. "Perfect, actually," You said and showed them your hand. Thor was the first to shout his congratulations, immediately getting up and pulling you and Loki into a tight hug. The rest went around the table, saying some variation of congrats, and the news traveled through the rest of the Avengers fast, as things usually do in this group.

Somehow, it managed to stay contained to the Avengers and not get out to the regular guests. That was a good thing, considering if you took the spotlight over the charity event, Tony would have had your head. But the following day, after all the charity festivities were over, you told the world your and Loki's big news. Sure, you were in over your heads, and this plan had gone farther than either of you expected, but at least all the news articles weren't referring to Loki as a villain anymore. An Avengers hero wouldn't marry Loki if he hadn't changed, right?

You did check up on Emily's page and saw her posts about she saw the whole proposal and all the pictures she posted. The one of Loki putting the ring on your finger, even if both of you looked a little shocked and confused, was your favorite. Now, you just had to plan a wedding.

The best idea was to get married fast.

That way, no one could back out and make things even more complicated for the Avengers. Some of your friends were a bit confused because it seemed like you were moving very fast, but no one outright questioned it; you both seemed happy and didn't want to get in the way. Besides, this would be better in the end for Loki and the rest of the team.

And now, here you are, a few months later celebrating your honeymoon in a town not too far away from New Asgard in Norway. It was a small town, so there wasn't anyone there to get juicy gossip about you and Loki, and Loki managed to get two rooms without looking suspicious. There might be a chance he used some type of magic on the manager, but you didn't ask.

You set your bag in your room and huffed as you sat on the bed. You'd be here for a few days doing...what? You weren't sure how this was all going to play out—spending your days in this cozy room and meeting Loki for meals? Continuously scrolling through social media until you're called for work? Stroll around the town daydreaming about him? You shook your head to get that last thought out of your head. Quickly, you tried to steer away from those thoughts and stood up to walk around your room and gather yourself. You lost track of time as you paced around your room.

With a soft knock on your door, you were pulled back to reality. Another knock had you heading toward the door, muttering "coming, coming," and finally swinging the door open.

You opened the door, and Loki nearly hit you. "My apologies," Loki said quickly and put his hand by his side. "Was going to knock again, but you opened the door," He explained.

"A little impatient, hmm?" You said and looked him up and down.

Loki didn't respond to that question. "We should go down to dinner," He gestured down the hallway.

You merely sighed and turned as you walked back into your room and paced a little more, not sure why your emotions were getting the best of you. "Dear?" Loki followed you in a shut the door. "Are you not hungry? I've heard the food here is excellent," He said.

"I do not want dinner!" You shouted, then stopped yourself once you realized you had raised your voice.

"What's going on?" Loki asked, not coming too close to not upset you more.

You muttered a few things before throwing up your hands and gesturing to the room as a whole. "This is what you call a honeymoon?" You asked, and Loki only raised his eyebrows at you, not understanding what you meant. "Pacing around our separate rooms? Running from our elaborate ruse?" You continued, then fell onto your bed and put your hand over your eyes. "We're doomed."

"Hey," Loki tried to stop you and catch your attention, but you weren't listening.

"Please, forgive me, your grace," You grimaced as you sat back up a minute later.

Loki scoffed. "Your grace?"

You looked at him and realized he still wasn't looking at you, even through all of this. It's like he was looking over your shoulder but always avoiding your eyes. You groaned when you realized this. "Can't even look me in the face. And now we must lie in this mess you made." You were standing now, ready to accuse him of more things.

"This mess we made," He clarified as he finally made eye contact.

"No, this was your mistake." You yelled at him. "You kissed me in the maze!"

Loki sighed again. "I was prepared to take my life that day."

You chuckled and shook your head. "I stole your fate."

"No, I stole your fate!"

You nearly jumped when you heard Loki yell back at you. "I don't understand-" You started, but he cut you off.

"And now, you're forced to love a man you hate," Loki said.

"Loki," You started again as you put your hand up to your chest.

Loki cut you off once more as he walked closer to you and put his hands on both of your upper arms, still making eye contact. "I know you don't feel the same, but I burn for you."

Your hand fell back to your side as you realized what he said. "You...burn for me?" You asked.

Loki nodded slowly, thinking about what he had just admitted. "I do," He said after a minute of silence.

"I burn for you," You repeated back to him while you both stared at each other, processing what this meant for the relationship. His hands were still on your arms, making you two only a foot apart.

Loki gently pulled you closer to him and brought you in for a kiss.

You weren't sure how long you and Loki stayed like that, but after some time, you two let go of each other and sat down on the edge of the bed, thinking. You both were still looking at each other but were still silent for a few moments as you thought through this whole relationship you and Loki have had. How much of it was really fake?

Finally, Loki broke the silence again. "How do you feel?" He asked.

A soft smile appeared on your face. "I feel...wonderful," You said.

As you two stared at each other, Loki began to tell you that he's been lying to himself this whole time. Sure, originally, it was a plan to just be in a fake relationship to get his reputation up, but then things changed. He tried to push those feelings down, but it only made it worse. And when you guys got into arguments, he fully believed that you really did hate him, which made him feel even worse when you said you were going to marry him.

At that, you burst out laughing. "You've got to be kidding me!" You said after you took a deep breath from the laughter. "I think the whole reason I was so angry with you was because I was realizing I was in love with you. Or, as you said, I was burning for you."

Loki chuckled and looked down as he shook his head. "We are idiots, hmm?" He posed the question, then looked back up at you. "I'm yours, love. I've always been yours."

You leaned in closer to him to where your foreheads were touching, a smile still clear on your face. "And I'm yours."

*crashes into your living room* HEY, BESTIES, ARE WE SURE THE GIANTS IN GOD OF WAR IS FORETOLD RAGNAROK BECAUSE I’M STARTING TO THINK THEY DIDN’T (or at least, not the Ragnarok we’re thinking). This is really long so it’s under a cut but hear me out, okay...

Here’s my logic. Most important detail: Mimir mentions that Ragnarok is supposed to happen hundreds of years from now, but they “changed something” and kick-started it early. All of this would line up with what we, the audience, know about Ragnarok, and what Asgard seems to know about it. It’s supposed to be Loki as an adult, having kids with Angrboda (one kid in particular being super important to Ragnarok), and everything kicks off then when he kills Baldur. But that’s not what happens. Loki (Atreus) is twelve when Baldur is killed, and technically he’s not even the one who does it. Kratos is.

This is important, because the giant’s prophecy mural depicts what happens in the game--the wrong version of Ragnarok, the version Mimir says wasn’t going to happen. Young Loki, Kratos actively involved. So they knew that Fimbulwinter was going to happen early, even though that flies in the face of other prophecies and things that seem to be common knowledge outside of Jotunheim.

On top of that, let’s go through that second piece of writing you can read before the mural is revealed.

We foresee Midgard’s fate, overrun, a second Hel. Neither Odin nor his dead may reach Jotunheim. The ways must be shut. - Discussing the events leading up to the closing of Jotunheim.

The serpent and the guardian remained. They alone shall keep our hope. - Faye + Jormi staying behind, serving as pieces in a puzzle that will play out later (Jormi helping Atreus and crew on their quest, Faye as his mother).

When doom befalls the indestructible, only then shall the guardian return. - Again, seems to foretell events in that game; Faye’s ashes are returned home after previously unkillable Baldur dies.

Now none of this points to the giants knowing about a second or differing Ragnarok, as it’s vague enough to apply both to the events of the game, or Ragnarok as we know it (for instance, there’s nothing that says in the standard Ragnarok timeline Faye isn’t still alive and came home post-Baldur, or maybe died but much later). BUT...this last bit caught my attention.

Until then, we await a better world - one without fear, without greed, without war. We wait for deliverance, and justice. - None of this sounds like the end of all creation, as Ragnarok is typically depicted.

We wait for a champion. - Most likely Loki (therefore Atreus).

We will wait for the word that gods grow good. - KRATOS HAS SPENT THE PAST DECADES GROWING AS A PERSON. Who is he, if not proof that gods can grow good? Him and, to an extent, Atreus, who had his brush with darkness but overcame it and seems to be doing well for himself? This could be proof that they accounted for Kratos, who is absent from Ragnarok in more than just the obvious ways of “Kratos not being myth canon” (Mimir probably would’ve guessed by now if he’d been in-game-Ragnarok canon).

So, what we’re seeing is that the giants, known for their gifts of foresight, foretold that Ragnarok is going to happen in a way different than what the Aesir know of, and then on top of that foretold a much brighter future (which also lines up with the reality of canon--Odin being alive actively makes things worse, as it’s his meddling that’s caused the Desolation and the slow sickness of Midgard). They seem to account for Kratos’s involvement in a way the Aesir didn’t. And seeing how giant prophecy seems to be on point (on point enough at least that Odin was desperate to know what they knew), I don’t think we can accurately use Ragnarok as a meter for what’s going to happen in game, even if you’re of the opinion (like me) that Kratos can defy fate. I think what we THINK is going to be fate is actually going to be quite different.

Now, this leaves a lot of questions, like for instance “why is this prophecy different than what Groa foretold? Is it that fate and destiny are a bit more malleable and Kratos showing up shifted the balance of fate in a way that only the giants knew, that Odin missed because he was too obsessed with a singular outcome? What does this mean for the missing parts of the mural (in particular the sad parts that I’m trying not to think about)? Can that fate be defied as well? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON??” And for that, unfortunately, we may have to wait...but if I’m right, and the actual canon is being put right in front of us, this could all also mean a more optimistic ending than a game called “Ragnarok” indicates. At the very least, it grants them some wiggle room to do so. (Seriously, picture an end reveal where things kinda work out, and then we find out the rest of the mural was the plot of Ragnarok. That’d slap.)

How Loki Shapeshifted From Nordic Folklore to a Marvel Icon

There are more than 800 years between the stories of Viking god Loki first being written down and his arrival (in the superb Tom Hiddleston) in the Marvel cinematic universe in 2011’s Thor. The new Disney+ series Loki, set to be released on June 9, is primed to explore more antics of Thor’s trickster brother as he attempts to fix the timeline he helped break in Avengers: Endgame. Among his many talents, Loki has cheated death a few times in the MCU, but that amounts to child’s play for this god.

In Norse mythology, Loki causes just as much confusion as his Marvel iteration. Though there aren’t any stories of him outwitting death, there are plenty of myths where he shapeshifts, swaps genders, or tricks gods into killing other gods. In the Marvel universe, he’s quite prone to allegiance swapping. Let’s dig into this troublemaker’s journey.

What is Loki’s origin?

The legends surrounding the Norse god are first documented in writing around the 13th century, primarily in Iceland. There are two versions of these legends that enter the historical record around the same time—the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda. The Poetic Edda is an anonymous collection of Old Norse poems that are mainly pulled from an Icelandic medieval manuscript known as the Codex Regius (some of the poems date back to 800 CE). The Prose Edda is an Old Norse textbook for composing poetry that was written by a single author, Snorri Sturluson, a colorful Icelandic historian, scholar, and lawspeaker.

“Within the myths, you can see Loki moving from being just mischievous to being absolutely evil. If you think of him as only being mischievous, he’s actually a creative force and often ends up getting the gods much of their magical possessions, like Thor’s Hammer, through his cunning.”

“Pretty much everything we know about Loki came from Snorri Sturluson,” Viking scholar Nancy Marie Brown, author of Song of the Vikings: Snorri and the Making of Norse Myths, told io9. Brown says this was very appropriate given that “Snorri was quite a trickster figure himself.” While calling him the “Homer of the North,” Brown also acknowledges that Snorri spent a lifetime “double-crossing friends and family… scheming and plotting, blustering and fleeing”— a life that eventually led to his unheroic demise in a nightshirt where his (supposed) final words were “don’t strike!” In both Eddas, Loki is always portrayed as a cunning trickster. In the Prose Edda, Snorri describes Loki as “pleasing and handsome in appearance, evil in character, very capricious in behavior. He possessed to a greater degree than other [gods] the kind of learning that is called cunning.”

Besides appearances, Loki is always getting the gods into trouble and then cleverly extricating them from the mess he’s made. He fathers the Midgard Serpent destined to bring about Ragnarök, the end of the world in Norse mythology. He convinces the blind god Hodr to kill the beautiful and favored god Baldur. He kidnaps the goddess Idun to save his own hide from a furious giant. The mythological character is constantly switching sides—sometimes supporting the gods and sometimes their enemies, the giants. In the MCU, Loki is both hero and villain—in The Avengers he opened a wormhole in New York City releasing alien monsters and in Thor: Ragnarok he helped Thor save the Asgardians from Hela’s wrath.

Loki might have begun as a Norse god of fire—fitting considering how fire can be both “helpful and destructive,” said Brown. Fire can both burn down your house and cook you dinner. It’s tricky that way—like Loki. As Brown puts it, “You can see his two sides there [reflected in fire].” Brown also explains that there was likely a transformation in Loki over the centuries. “Within the myths, you can see Loki moving from being just mischievous to being absolutely evil. If you think of him as only being mischievous, he’s actually a creative force and often ends up getting the gods much of their magical possessions, like Thor’s Hammer, through his cunning.” Again, it’s just like Marvel’s Loki, who sometimes helps the other gods out, like when he teamed up with Thor to escape the Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok.

What is Loki’s relationship with the Devil?

In the long, slow conversion of the Vikings to Christianity that took place between the 9th and 12th centuries, Loki became a parallel to the Christian Devil. The creative, positive elements of him fell away leaving only the god favored by the Father (Odin/God) before getting cast out. (It does sound a bit like Lucifer, right?) Christianity paints a world that is far more black and white, good vs. evil than the Norse pagan religion—here’s little room for a grey, ambiguous figure like Loki. As Brown puts it, “The Christian religion insists that you’re either with us or against us. Whereas in what we understand of the pagan Viking religion, there were a lot of shades of grey. There was a spectrum on which you could move back and forth. You weren’t all one thing or all the other. You weren’t all female or all male. You weren’t all good or all evil. It was more human.”

Loki always moved fluidly between those two polarities—helping Thor in one story, causing an overthrow of the gods in another. In one tale, Loki shapeshifts into a mare, becoming the mother of Odin’s great 8-legged horse, Sleipnir. In another, he fathers the wolf Fenrir. The Church couldn’t really handle all that grey area Loki liked to inhabit, and so it eventually cast him as the devil himself. “[Monks] had to sort the gods into saints and devils, and Loki by being sexually ambiguous and also morally ambiguous falls into the devil [category],” explained Brown. Though Marvel’s Loki certainly channels a bit of the devil at times, we’ve luckily yet to see him become both mother and father to world-ending, multi-legged monsters in the Marvel Universe. But, there’s still time, especially with the new Disney+ series hitting the small screen.

When was Loki’s Revival?

After the Viking conversion, the Norse myths started to fade, and Loki with them—until the 1600s, when medieval manuscripts like those containing the Prose and Poetic Edda began to be translated. “The reason [these myths] became popular was because of nationalism,” Brown told us. “In the mid to late 1800s, there was the idea that what distinguished one nation from another was its cultural heritage.” This spurred Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm and Wilhelm Carl Grimm—known to many simply as the Brothers Grimm—to go “collect the stories of the local people to prove that Germany was a nation, not a collection of states. You had the same thing happening in Ireland to prove that they were different from the English and you have the same thing happening in Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.” This eventually gave rise to the Nazis appropriating Norse myths in their twisted pursuit of alleging Aryan supremacy.

Following the Civil War, the United States also looked to the Middle Ages to redefine the country’s fractured identity. As Chris Bishop, author of Medievalist Comics and the American Century, explained to io9, “[the Middle Ages] offered an aesthetic that was individualistic (think: the knight errant, Robin Hood, etc.), given to interpretations of exceptionalism (Camelot, the once and future king), venerable (where old equalled established and respectable), and (unlike Classicism) Christian.” The Middle Ages, or more accurately the remixing of the Middle Ages known in academia as “medievalisms,” appealed to many Americans obsessed with ideas of American exceptionalism and singularity in the 19th century. Eventually the U.S.’s obsession with the Middle Ages made its way into comic books starting with Prince Valiant in 1937, a comic strip created by Hal Foster set in and around the legends of King Arthur. Other medievalist comics followed eventually leading to the inclusion of Norse gods like Loki, Thor, and Odin.

When was Marvel Comics’ Loki introduced?

While Loki first appeared in the 1949 comic book Venus styled after (you guessed it) the devil, the modern-age Loki didn’t hit the comic book scene until co-writers and brothers Stan Lee and Larry Lieber adapted him in 1962’s Journey into Mystery #85. It’s in that issue where Loki “becomes Thor’s enemy/ally/brother/adopted brother/etc,” said Bishop. The mischievous personality of the Norse god remains largely the same in the Loki of the comic books and films and even retains the ability to swap genders at times.

In the comics, Loki is raised as Thor’s brother in Asgard—somewhere the Marvel stories diverge from the Norse mythology. It’s Loki and Odin who are sworn brothers in the Norse myths, not Loki and Thor. As Brown explains, “Loki and Odin are blood brothers, which means they are even closer than real brothers.” In the Viking world, two people who swore a blood oath to one another formed a bond that went beyond kin, and so went the Norse Loki and Odin’s relationship. As Bishop points out, the Loki/Thor dynamic of the comics and movies is a “classic, formulaic archetype.” Thor is the “big, hunky, handsome (but slightly dumb) hero” and Loki is “his slight, quirky but super-smart frenemy. Loki is the dark, misunderstood, vulnerable shadow that audiences can relate to, reach out to, care for. Thor is that dumb jock who everyone looked up to at school, but Loki was that cool, quiet kid who went on to found a tech-empire.”

Why is Loki called a Trickster?

What does remain consistent with Loki is that he always plays the trickster. He is the manifestation of psychologist Carl Jung’s archetype: The trickster disrupts the individual and/or society causing either growth or destruction. Social scientist Helena Bassil-Morozow points out that when it comes to Loki, “despite the fact that the narrative details between the medieval Loki stories and their contemporary versions vary, the main idea remains the same—the trickster mercilessly attacks those in power and nearly causes the end of the world.” Both in the Norse myths and in Marvel, the world needs saving from Loki. He acts as the catalyst for a whole lot of upheaval—upheaval that in the Norse myths causes Ragnarök.

Loki “functions as a locus of salvation (literally, a prodigal son).” Loki just might be a savior. He’s someone audiences can look at and think “if Loki can be redeemed, so too might I.”

Perhaps that’s where the two narratives differ the most. In the Norse tales, the end of the world at Ragnarök is inevitable. Odin and Thor will die. Everything will change. Vikings lived with the knowledge that their world would end. In the MCU, we don’t know how the story ends, plus Ragnarök took place already and yet the Asgardians live on. There’s still hope that Loki will prove to be good and that the other superheroes will save the world from whatever mayhem he’s caused, or so we can hope in the upcoming Disney+ series. As Bishop puts it, Loki “functions as a locus of salvation (literally, a prodigal son).” Loki just might be a savior. He’s someone audiences can look at and think “if Loki can be redeemed, so too might I,” explains Bishop.

While the Vikings’ Loki caused the end of the world, today’s Loki might just save it. Or maybe not. And, perhaps that’s the fun of the trickster—you never quite know what they’ll get up to.

music recommendations because i have some thoughts™

i don't wanna be that person who's like "my music taste is so weird lol" but i find that very often most of my friends don't really care for the music i like so i thought i'd just make a long ass post about it on tumblr instead. Fair warning, I'm very passionate about MIKA and The Mechanisms and so this very quickly got VERY long because it is part of my ongoing campaign to convince people to listen to mika and the mechs.

1) MIKA in general, but especially My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019) and No Place In Heaven (2015) (especially the Deluxe version!!)

MIKA is a kind of British singer (half Lebanese, grew up in France blabla), and you probably know him for Grace Kelly and Relax, Take It Easy from his first album Life In Cartoon Motion from 2007. He writes a lot of FUN music, interspersed with the occasional slightly sadder song, especially when looking at an album like No Place In Heaven, which contains a lot of songs with gay themes, resulting in some songs that are just a little bit ouch. He's originally classically trained and has a frankly RIDICULOUS range and idk he just writes very good pop music. Also I have so much respect for that time he talked about how a lot of pop is very fake, with like expensive cars and stilettos and mini skirts in the snow and said "Because I walk down the street, and I don't see any of that. I see fat women and gay men. I don't know... That's real". He's written 5 albums; My Name Is Michael Holbrook (2019), No Place In Heaven (2015), The Origin Of Love (2012), The Boy Who Knew Too Much (2009), and Life In Cartoon Motion (2007).

For starters, I recommend listening to Last Party, Origin Of Love, Grace Kelly, Blame It On The Girls, Blue, Happy Ending, Pick Up Off The Floor, Last Party, Underwater, Tomorrow and Tiny Love (yes this is a long list but i REALLY love MIKA). If you want a slightly broader palette that's not just my favourites, I recommend the Mika starter pack on spotify.

2) The Mechanisms. I warn you. I am making this a thing. I have been obsessed with the mechs since last march.

Boy, where to start? The Mechanisms were a British 9 member space pirate story-telling cabaret that "died" in January 2020. They rewrite songs to fit retellings of various stories. I don't even know what genre I'd describe them as, but probably folk but steam-punk?? Their 4 "main" albums are concept albums, and I honestly just recommend listening to the from beginning to end in chronological order. A good way to get into the mechs is also to listen to UDAD and then watching the live show on youtube or alternately try giving Death To The Mechanisms a listen, to get good quality live show audio of TBI and various other stuff. Also, it was streamed on YouTube and someone combined the footage with the album audio and it rocks. Really, I think the mechs' best selling points are honestly just their concept albums:

Once Upon a Time (In Space) Their first album from 2012. I'd say this is the most "easily digestible" for the general public, since it's a retelling of various fairytales. So, what if Old King Cole was in fact not merry, but rather a cold-blooded dictator, intent on colonising as much of the galaxy as possible. What if Snow White was a general, looking to avenge what King Cole did to her sister, Rose. What if Cinderella was to be wedded to Rose the day that King Cole attacked in order to kidnap Rose? But y'know, In Space and also like every other mechs album it's a beautiful tragedy. Fave songs are Old King Cole, Pump Shanty, and No Happy Ending.

Ulysses Dies at Dawn You guessed it, it's a story about Odysseus, or Ulysses because I guess Ulysses is easier to rhyme or fit in the meter or something, idk. Ulysses is a war hero of unknown gender who is said to keep something that could take down the corrupt Olympians, meanest families in the City, in a vault to which only they know the passcode. Oedipus, Heracles, Orpheus, and Ariadne have been hired by Hades, who happens to be The Mechs' quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, to get into Ulysses' vault. I didn't care much for udad at first, but honestly it's got some real bangers and the story is really good. UDAD weirdly stands out as the only of the concept albums to not feature any gay relationships, per se. Fave songs are Riddle of the Sphinx, Favoured Son, and Underworld Blues.

High Noon over Camelot This is my favourite mehcs album. So basically, this is Arthurian legend, but it's a space western and Jonny D'Ville does a bad southern accent. This is the story of the cowboy lovers Arther, Lancelot, and Guinevere searching for the Galfridian Restricted Acces Interface Login, or GRAIL, in order to stop their world from falling into the sun. Meanwhile, Mordred and Gawaine are ruling Camelot, and Mordred has convinced Gawaine to try to establish peace with the Saxons by whom Mordred was raised, but Gawaine hates viciously. If you love getting your heart broken and songs by a fucking off the rails batshit preacher I HIGHLY recommend hnoc. Fave songs are Gunfight at the Dolorous Guard, Blood and Whiskey, and Once and Future King. Honorary mention for Hellfire because it awakens something animalistic in me.

The Bifrost Incident TBI is the frankly only good adaptation of norse mythology I've ever known of, and I say that as Dane who was literally forced to learn things about norse mythology in school because it's my heritage or whatever. I've been listening to TBI a lot lately because it's VERY good. It's definitely the most refined of the mechs' albums (because it's the newest) but also I just love a little bit of cosmic horror. 80 years ago, Odin, the All-Mother, ruler of Asgaard, launched a train through the wormhole Bifrost that would reduce the travel between Asgaard and Midgaard from 3 months to 3 days, but things didn't go quite as planned. Lyfrassir Edda of the New Midgaard Transport Police is trying to solve the case of why suddenly the train has arrived 80 years late; to figure out whether it was accident or maybe it was sabotaged by Loki, who was allegedly sentence to death her murder of Baldur, by the Midgaardian resistance led by Loki's wife Sigyn, or maybe by Thor, who was to take over after Odin, and who holds quite the grudge because he used to be a friend of Loki's. You might've heard the song Thor from this album, it's apparently quite popular. Fave songs are Loki, Ragnarok III: Strange Meeting, and Ragnarok V: End of The Line. Yet again an honorary mention: Red Signal because while Lovecraft was a bitch, his invocations are fucking RAW.

Basically, the Mechanisms do all of their performances in character as captain first mate Jonny D'Ville, quartermaster Ashes O'Reilly, pilot DrumBot Brian, master-at-arms Gunpowder Tim, science officer Raphaella la Cognizi, doctor Baron Marius Von Raum (neither a baron, nor a doctor), archivist Ivy Alexandria, engineer Nastya Rasputina, and The Toy Soldier, who is, as usual, present. You can find very obscure lore about the crew of the Aurora here, tidbits on Tales To Be Told and TTBT Vol. 2, such as One Eyed Jacks, The Ignominious Demise of Dr. Pilchard, Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser, Lucky Sevens, and Lost in the Cosmos.

If you feel like listening to a full 40-50 minute album to find out if you like a band is a bit much, I recommend listening to one of the mini stories Alice, Swan Song, or Frankenstein, which are about 12, 5 and 9:30 minutes respectively.

3) The Amazing Devil You know that guy who played Jaskier in the Witcher? I got into The Amazing Devil from spotify recommending them because I listened to the mechs, and apparently Joey Batey from The Amazing Devil is the same Joey Batey who was in the Witcher. Both him and Madeleine Hyland are VERY talented singers and songwriters and their second album The Horror and the Wild makes me go out into the forest and SCREAM. I listened to it on repeat for like a month straight. I guess they'd also be considered folk, but like. New Folk. Also yes, this is another British artist, I don't know why I'm like this. I've never really gotten that into their first album, Love Run, but King slaps. As I understand there's this whole lore about the Blue Furious Boy and Scarlet Scarlet, Joey and Madeleine respectively, but unlike the Mechanisms it's actually possible to find out things about the actual real people and harder to find the obscure lore? I'm open for people to please help me. Fave songs are The Horror and the Wild, Farewell Wanderlust, and That Unwanted Animal, which is literally a third of their second album, but again. I haven't really listened to Love Run that much, and I just LOVE the harmonies on THATW. (also im gay and dramatic leave me alone)

4) dodie I have so much love for this woman. Like many others, I first knew dodie as doddleoddle on youtube. I think I first stumbled across her in probably 2015, because I distinctly already knew her before she released her first EP Sick of Losing Soulmates in 2016. I think I watched probably every video she's ever made in the span of a few weeks. I just loved her quiet sound and was absolutely HOOKED. Also she's actually the reason I got into MIKA originally, so thanks for that. Dodie just realeased her first album Build A Problem (in addition to her three EP's; the one mentioned above, You, and Human) and it slaps. Yes dodie is also British Fave songs are probably Monster, Rainbow, and In The Middle.

5) Cladia Boleyn Unfortunately, Claudia Boleyn only has three singles and that's it. She's been making content on youtube for quite a while, and that's how I first discovered her. I don't know what genre her music is, but I like it. The songs are Celesta, George, and Mother Maiden Crone, of which the latter is my favourite. I'm not saying Claudia Boleyn invented women in 2017 when she released Mother Maiden Crone, but she did. Also you guessed it, Claudia Boleyn is British.

6) Hozier I'm not about to tell you about Hozier. You know who he is. Listen to Nina Cried Power, Angel Of Small Death & The Codeine Scene, and Shrike. Also Hozier isn't stricly British in that he is definitely from A British Isle, but Ireland is not part of the UK. Give me a break.

7) Oh Land Oh Land IS DANISH. I like her early music best, because I'm not that into the electronic sound. I guess Oh Land is just you regular old pop, but with the occasional weird vibe? Oddly enough, I like her first album Fauna best. Unfortunately I haven't really listened to her newest album Family Tree much, but it seems good? Fave songs are Frostbite, Love You Better and Family Tree. I cried on the bus, first time I listened to the Danish version of Love You Better, Elsker Dig Mer because my mother tongue always just hits harder. Also Frostbite is Oh Land doing a duet with herself which is pretty cool.

8) Oysterband This is a live recommendation. I mean they're a decent folk band and all, but they're a fucking experience live. If you like folk and you ever get the opportunity to see Oysterband live, do it. Unfortunately, yes. They are British. Either way, they are incredible on a scene and I think they deserve a mention for that.

9) Ben Platt Honestly don't know much about this guy, but he's not British and he was in Dear Evan Hansen. He released an album in 2019, Sing To Me Instead, and I just think it's a good album, there isn't really not much more to it. Fave songs are Grow As We Go, Bad Habit, and In Case You Don't Live Forever.

We're three days from the Loki finale and I’m back to spout more meta and theories about episodes 5 & 6! It’s a long one (again.)

I really enjoyed episode five. People have complained that they felt it didn't do much to move the show forward, but one of the things I've loved most about this show is the time it takes to sit with the characters and learn about their backstory, their feelings. (I'm always a little bugged when critics say that an episode hasn't done enough to move the plot forward, because without adequate character development, why should I care about the plot?) I thought the pacing of it was really well balanced.

….and I have never been so nervous for a finale in my entire life. There’s a lot of reasons.

The first is just the fact that I’ve been waiting for this show for a whole year, and the anticipation and excitement of it literally helped get me through the pandemic--so when those final end credits roll I’m going to be a whole mess no matter what happens. (I really hope the rumors floating around about season two are accurate) I also just feel like it’s somewhat inevitable that this is our final farewell to Tom’s Loki, and like—I’ll never be ready, but especially right now, amidst all the rampant controversy around this show, I’m just not ready to deal with that. I have a *small* modicum of hope that this won't be the case, but it feels unlikely. Anyway, guess I’ll die.

I really want this show to stick the landing, so to say. I loved the last episode, but a lot of the response has been that it felt like a lull in the plot. I want this show to end in a satisfying bang so it can get the credit it deserves.

Also I’m a whole hypocrite eating my words from last week—I’m fully on-board with Loki/Sylvie now (not that I was ever really against it)--I’m not sure why I’m surprised. They’re so adorable and wholesome, and I’m in love with seeing Loki in love. It’s so precious. (Just as a PSA, if you’re not into them that’s chill, and you’re allowed to dislike a ship without trying to justify your opinion by labeling shippers as morally problematic. Selfcest isn’t a real thing, therefore there isn’t a moral high ground to stand on here. Okay? Okay.) Wherever it ultimately leads, their relationship is still a really sweet exploration of them both growing and learning how to love themselves and trust others. Also, them cuddling under a tablecloth is the cutest shit I’ve ever seen with my two eyes.

MY THEORIES:

I love Sylvie so much, SO MUCH — and she is 100% going to stab Loki in the back by the end of the next episode. I don’t think the betrayal is going to stick, and by the end they’ll both be on the same page again, but the conversations on trust have been way too one-sided for my comfort. If nothing else she's going to seriously consider it. Here’s one way I can see that going. Spoiler alert: it hurts.

Sylvie betrays Loki at one point—and we see Loki’s growth and arc come full circle as, even after being betrayed by the person he hinged his entire development around, he still believes in doing the right thing, in saving her regardless. It ends in a heart-wrenching self-sacrifice of some kind, and his actions serve as the catalyst for her full development as well. We keep seeing different versions of Loki die for their ‘glorious purpose’, just like how Classic Loki shouts the phrase as he was consumed by Aloith (RIP King, I love you).

Loki has already called Sylvie his glorious purpose (or inferred it). There’s been backlash around him saying that, but the way I see it, it’s less “I’m obsessed with this girl she’s my purpose now” and more “I believe that she’s the best version of us and I’m going to make it my purpose to help her succeed and be what the rest of us aren’t”. That’s why seeing all the other variant Loki’s at their worst in the Loki clubhouse (? what do I call this lol) only fuels him more to find her. I think about what Mobius told him: “You exist to cause pain and suffering and death, all so others can achieve the best versions of themselves”. I don’t think Loki truly believes he can be the best version of Loki — I think he saw Sylvie and thought, "it's her". He’s decided he’s going to help her achieve the best version of herself, but he'll do it giving her love and trust and devotion, rather than through betrayal, pain and suffering. He’s re-writing his pre-determined role, in his own small way. I’m so proud of him.

So who’s behind it all and what’s truly going on here? (This isn’t really one theory, more like a string of possibilities and I don’t really know how they’d fit together.)

I still think it’s another version of Loki. And if it is, I can’t help but appreciate the connections between his position dictating the end of time in the show in relation to Loki’s role in the Norse myths, where he’s the catalyst for the destruction of all things. It feels relevant, considering the whole idea that ‘the end of time hasn’t been written yet’ has come up twice now. That would be a fascinating tie-in to the mythology. (Also—Alioth looks like a giant dog. And Fenrir’s role in Ragnarok was devouring the world—I realize this is a reach but am I the only person seeing this connection?) The thing I really can’t predict is the motivation. What would cause a Loki to want to prevent Loki’s from changing? Was there something that happened in the sacred timeline this Loki is trying to preserve? (I also like the idea of us maybe seeing another version of Sylvie behind it all, but I’m just going to leave that rabbit hole alone. )

But here’s the theory I can’t stop thinking about. There’s a theory floating around tik tok (by user twelvepercentcredit) saying the ‘castle’ we see beyond Alioth looks like a place called the House of Ideas, something that appeared in a (discontinued?) Loki comic. Here’s the wiki page on it. Just looking at the imagery of this compared to the location we’re seeing in the trailers, it’s too similar to be a coincidence. The huge bookshelves, the towering ceilings.

Here’s a description from the wiki:

“The House of Ideas is also home to a library which archives the exploits of every hero who has ever existed in the form of books, written unconsciously by the collective minds of their believers. This collection is curated by Now and Then, two of the children of Eternity. Now and Then routinely seek out heroes to bring into the House of Ideas to bargain with them and give their collections more pages, therefore more time for adventures and exploits. “

And later on the page on how Loki ties in:

“Heeding the desire in Loki's heart to do more with his life, Now and Then approached Loki and brought him to the House of Ideas,[5] where they struck up with him the deal to give more pages to his collection of exploits, rewriting the Books of Loki with a hero's stories in exchange for an eventual hero's death.”

Are they gonna play with the exact happenings of this? I don't know, but it sounds pretty cool!

It would be gutsy to go this route with the show given how meta it is, but I love the idea of it. Would they put characters that embody the abstract ideas of “Eternity” “Now & Then” into the show in the last episode? I’m not sure. Something I could see as a possibility though is an alternate version of Loki having overthrown whoever was previously guarding the timeline, and Loki and Sylvie will have to take them down in turn, thus ‘releasing’ the multiverse to its default, chaotic state.

What if our Loki’s ultimate destiny, ultimate Glorious Purpose, is to release the timelines--restoring all the variants back to their original timelines--and remain in this place for eternity, guarding the timeline and ensuring the multiverse is allowed to exist in its natural state? It seems a pretty fitting role for the God of Chaos. It would also explain why whoever’s behind the TVA would be so desperate to eliminate all variant Loki, if that was his ultimate destiny.

It would be an effective way to remove Hiddleston’s Loki from the movie-verse without killing him, AND place both Sylvie and any other Loki variants back in the the main timeline for use in future films—which we know has to happen somehow, because Young Avengers is definitely happening, and Kid Loki has got to get out of the void somehow.

And yea, this outcome would hurt like a bitch. Because even though that would truly be a lovely glorious purpose for our Loki, he’d be alone. And the whole point of this show is that he doesn’t have to be alone! It would be a very poetic sacrifice for him to take on the burden of watching over the timelines alone for all eternity so that his other variants could be the best versions of themselves, but I really just want him to be happy. I will be crying my eyes out if this happens. I’ll be proud but I won’t be okay.

And this all is probably speculative nonsense and could go off in an entirely different direction. Who knows. All in all, I just really want to see Loki fully believe in himself and his ability, to truly absorb what he said about being stronger than he realizes, and to take control of his destiny.

WHAT I WANT (NEED) FROM EPISODE 6:

Let Hunter B-15 and Mobius team up to burn the place to the ground. She was nerfed in the time-keeper fight, I want to see B-15 kick some ass.

I kind of want Ravonna to escape and be a character that carries over into the films for her tie-ins with Kang? I want to see more of her.

Give Loki a new badass costume. I’m begging. If he’s gonna go down, he deserves to go down in something other than khakis.

And then I want to see him and Sylvie fighting side by side in matching outfits.

I want a Mobius-level hug between them. Or a kiss. Or both. But I want the hug more. And you know what? I want her to initiate the hug or kiss or whatever it is because I want Loki to experience receiving love and affection from others as much as giving it. He deserves it ok??

I expect Mobius on a jet ski in the post credits and if I don’t get it I riot

Let’s talk about Hyper-fixation.

I’ve always had characters/actors that I’ve obsessed with and day dreamed about but only recently have I realised that I go through the stages of whatever character/actor, where I’ll either just watch the movie their character is in constantly or look them up on Tumblr or Pintrest. Or watch all of the actors films. I thought this was kinda weird so I decided to look it up and apparently its a coping mechanism for anxiety, which I have really bad. It’s kind of nice to know that this is actually a thing and that it’s my brain trying to comfort me.

It started off where I could just concentrate on one actor/character at a time, one of the main ones I can think of is Robin De Noir in the film The Secret of Moonacre. I was very obsessed with this character and later on when I was watching The Village which was a BBC period drama I began to fall in love with Augustus Prew which is the actor that plays Robin. So I made it my mission to watch ALL of his movies and collect his DVDs, I tend to call these phases so it would be a Augustus/Robin phase. Another big phase I go through which is kind of all ways there in the back group is Loki phase. When my anxiety got worse it got harder to control the switching between phases.

It’s got to a point where I have to be careful what I watch because watching another movie could trigger another phase. It feels weird for me to talk about, so I thought writing it down and sharing it here would help. Like I’ve been in a very Poe Dameron and Santiago phase lately, but with all the Harry Potter, Draco, Fred Tiktoks going around at the moment it’s kind of thrown me back into a Harry Potter phase. This can be annoying especially if I like the phase I’m in.

There’s been characters/actors that I’ve loved for a long time but I think only after the Augustus thing did I Hyper-fixate on them. There’s some films that are childhood films that I don’t remember watching for the first time, they’ve just always been with me such as: Labyrinth, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Mummy, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Tremors etc.

I have found though that it’s mainly characters that I do this with and I’ll leave a list down below, with the movies their in.

Starting from the main ones that return a lot:

Characters I have phases of a lot (decided to use gifs)-

~ Loki

(Thor-2011, The avengers-2012, Thor:dark world-2013, Thor: Ragnarok-2017, The Avengers: Infinity war-2018, The Avengers: Endgame-2019) The Loki phase never seems to go away, he’s always there in the back of my mind but comes to the front sometimes.

~ Will Scarlet (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves-1991.) A childhood crush who I love a lot.

~ Newt (The Maze Runner-2014, The Scorch Trails-2015, The Death Cure-2018.) The Maze Runner is my favourite trilogy and I enjoy both the books and films!

~ John Murphy (The 100- 2014-2020.) Murphy has to be one of my favourite characters of all time, and like Loki he’s always in the back of my mind but comes to the forefront now and then.

~ Archie Kennedy (Hornblower: The Even Chance -1998, Hornblower: The Duchess and the Devil -1999, Hornblower: The frogs and the Lobsters -1999, Hornblower: Mutiny -2001, Hornblower: Retribution -2001.) Archie’s another that’s always there in the back of my mind.

~ Poe Dameron (Star Wars: The Force Awakens -2015, Star Wars: The Last Jedi -2017, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker -2019) Poe/Oscar is a new phase that I developed over Quarantine, although I’ve always loved Poe since seeing The Force Awakens in cinema.

~ Collins (Dunkirk -2017) I loved Jack in the BBC War and Peace so when I saw Dunkirk in cinema it kinda started something.

~ Steve Harrington (Stranger Things -2016-) Hated Steve in the first season but dam that little shit worked his way deep into my heart.

~ Draco Malfoy (Harry Potter Series -2001-2011.) My original Harry Potter crush! also I die hard Slytherin so I don’t think I have to explain this one.

~ Fred Weasley (Harry Potter series -2001-2011.) The Fred phase is kind of new for me but I think that Draco and Fred is a very good combination. Also really love James Phelps and keep up with his new works.

~ Hawkeye (Thor -2011, The Avengers -2012, Avengers: Age of Ultron -2015, Captain America: Civil War -2016, Avengers: Endgame -2019)

~ Exo (South Korean group) This is a constant phase, it’s 24/7! Exo is my happy place I go to them when I feel at my lowest and they always make me so happy. I honestly owe them so so much and If I ever met them I would thank them for always being a source of happiness and comfort for me. Especially the member Kim Minseok, he’s my bias and I just adore and look up to him so much.

Scrapbook 2021 | Part II

For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!

It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.

Goals are: read 80 books (as of today, i am at 31 books, which sounds not great but goodreads assures me that it’s only 1 book behind schedule), finish five video games (at two at the moment... mostly because I keep dragging my feet on actually finishing P5R), write more than 20 fics (at... 6) or something larger than 20k (negative), and write either an original short story or start a novel (i have started plotting for the novel? does that count?)

It’s a lie and yet it’s also something he’d aspire to be. I wanted something that caused a roll of the eyes but was also extremely simple. Like, you know who he is just with one glimpse at my url XD

On Endgame: Tony, Thor, and Loki

So, Endgame spoilers below. Ye have been warned.

It was a good movie. It wasn't Infinity War, but.

You know, I want to be eloquent. I want to say something meaningful. I want to do something. But I can't. God, I can't and it hurts.

Loki...is my favorite character overall, and Thor and Tony my favorite Avengers. I'll unpack this from the bottom up.

I knew Tony was going to die. Did I want him to? No. Did I pray I was wrong? Desperately. But I have the uncanny misfortune of being right and Tony died. It was bitter. Pepper is what made it easier for me. When she bowed over him and told him he could rest, her strength and love radiated like aloe. I respect Pepper so much. But I'm still freaking ticked that Tony died. He had a kid! She needs her dad! That was like the point of the last ten years! And Peter...oh goodness, Peter! I just, Tony hurts.

And Thor...! Oh gosh, I don't even know where to begin! The whole point at the end of Ragnarok was Thor accepting his place as king, right? But what's this? He lets himself go after killing Thanos to gain empty vengeance for a brother he makes no reference to in the film. I mean, I liked the wild hair. It was very Odin, very Viking, I think. But Thor becomes an alcoholic who yells at kids playing Fortnite and it doesn't seem right. I understand the trauma he's gone through. Believe me, his I've followed and cared for more than that of any other Avenger's. But he's... he's not himself. He's not Thor. Not really. And it hurts. But I appreciate him making Valkyrie...Queen of Asgard?...and going off with the Guardians. Thor in GotGv3? Yes, please. And make it have closure!

Closure! Which brings me...to Loki.

Oh gods.

I knew as soon as I read Tom Hiddleston hadn't attended the LA premier that something wasn't right. I've spent the last year hoping against the winds and wishing on moonbeams that Loki would live. That Loki would come home. Would...do something. And he didn't.

I have a...very real problem, I think, in that while I love tons of characters, I tend to fixate on one specifically until it's a borderline obsession. I don't think I have an obsession with Loki (others may beg to differ), but my love for him outstrips that for most other fictional characters save Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. I say that to say, I was...not outright depressed. It wasn't worth a full depression, because real depression is serious, but the happenings of Infinity War weighed on me like a dark cloud that took months to shake. Thousands of words written with pain and lost love in mind and endless nights of insomnia where all I could do is ask why. I even went through the stages of grief.

Okay, maybe I'm a bit obsessed. But it's Marvel. It's Loki. It's okay.

No, it's not. It's just fiction.

But fiction shapes us into who we are...

Loki has been such a big part of my life since I was...gosh, thirteen? His smile and the promise of magic drew me into the world of Norse mythology. It led me down paths of mystery and myth that I would never have gone down without his influence. Loki has literally shaped parts of my life and has been a major influence even beyond the MCU and comics, as a character of lore, for years. His is the single character who hovers beyond my vision as I write and create. Kinda like an imaginary friend.

Oh gosh, I am obsessed.

Okay, I'm rambling. So basically, Loki means so, so much to me and I've been hoping on the wings of a prayer that Endgame would fix what shouldn't have been broken. And it didn't. So screw Endgame. This and everything else, just screw it!

I'm so confused. Is our Loki the 2012 version, off with the Tesseract? Is that a seperate timeline from the one 2014 Thanos left? If it is, that'd mean there could be a timeline where Loki is King of Asgard (as Odin) without fear of Thanos, in a reality where Thor doesn't search for the Infinity Stones and Ragnarok is different. I mean, I like that idea, but. Also! Didn't Bruce tell Thor they could get the other Asgardians back? And Bruce snapped, so did he restore them, too? Is Loki alive on a ship (half a ship?) out there with Heimdall and the other Asgardians? Is Thor going to find him and them?

What even is going on?

I went into this movie clinging to a fragile hope and penny wishes, but now I feel a twisting coil of heat inside that makes me feel a touch ill. The rest of me is cold, and in shock, and full of rage.

Endgame was spectacular. A cinematic masterpiece, in my opinion. But it held no real consolation. It didn't balm my soul. It tore back its cover and exposed it to a frigid wind. I couldn't watch it again anytime soon. I just want... consolation.

And it's so, so, so stupid how I'm this dependant on a fictional character. That his wellbeing and happiness have, quite literally, shaped my own on numerous occasions in the past. But this is how it is. I now have to deal with the further consequences of it, and the drawn out anticipation for answers I'm beginning to believe I may not like or even want.

I think Marvel and the Russos are cowards who're scared of how popular Loki is with fans. Way back in 2014 people talked like Loki was going to lose fans to all the new characters that were coming into the MCU. And maybe he has lost a few. But not like they talked about, no. People still care so much about this character (yay! I'm not the only obsessive nerd!) and we want him treated well. We want him to get the same respect every other character is afforded. Even Thanos got respect and he's literally the worst (worse than Hela, even), so what makes our Trickster Prince less worthy?

I'm serious. Is it the cow helmet?

Anyway, that's my raw emotional rant coming off of Endgame. Here's to the long, long...long waits for Guardians 3 and the Loki TV series, which will have answers...just very distant ones.

I guess I'll start my Norse adaption of Phantom now, then. I've got nothing else to do now.
