A small tribute to Freyja’s grandmother who, when life gave her lemons, robbed and cursed the family she worked for and escaped to the UK alone.

Maria Soledad, better known as Marisol, was well aware of just how much of a bitch life could be. Despite being born with magical abilities, she was never formally educated on how to perform magic. From age 14, she worked as a domestic servant to a Spanish pureblood family. She befriended the youngest son, Luis Ángel, who over the course of several years tried to teach her some magic from his lessons and textbooks.

She worked for the family for 7 years, the last few of which she’d been in a secret relationship with Luis Ángel. While she hadn’t expected outpourings of joy from an unplanned pregnancy, she didn’t expect to be utterly betrayed by her lover. When his family found out about the relationship and resulting “little accident”, they accused her of bewitching him, hoodwinking him to succumb to her will. And what did he do? Agree with them. In the end, she had nobody to turn to for help.

Now she didn’t have a wand. Never owned one, tried one a few times with disastrous results. But what she did have was an extraordinary ability for wandless hexes and curses. So she put the house under a short-term sleeping spell, cleaned their house out of their most valuable treasures, cursed them for good measure, and ran away. She knew that escaping to a foreign country where she knew next to nothing about the culture and language was a risky move, but she also knew that if it meant her children would have a better life and education than she did, she would do it a million times over.

Fast forward 10 years, she had near-fluency in English, regular employment, a safe secluded home in Skye, two healthy daughters, and an overwhelming sense of pride and satisfaction. Life hadn’t been without its struggles, it was indeed a bitch — but it hadn’t counted on this witch.

WIP Re-Intro: Herald At Dawn

Title: Herald at Dawn

Genre: Steampunk fantasy murder mystery

Status: 25k draft 0, working on draft 1 & rewriting some of draft 0

Pov: Third person limited, multiple POVs

Setting: A steampunk city called Volimere, loosely based on victorian/edwardian london

Universal TW/CW: Murder, corruption, legal systems being really really shit at their job, implied homophobia, cheating/affairs on spouses (past), bribery, stabbing, implied past sexual assualt

Plot/Synopsis: 11 years ago a woman named Marisol Ekker was murdered by the wife of her son's father, Evelyn Belmont. Despite evidence to the contrary, Evelyn Belmont was acquitted, and faced no punishment. Nearly a decade later, investigative reporter Alexandrina McLelland approached Marisol Ekker's son, Nathaniel--who was 12 at the time of her death--, to write an article about the corruption present in the case. Shortly after the article is published a string of murders begins, with no seeming rhyme or reason to connect the victims. But the timing seem suspect, and as the fallout of the articles publishing hits Nathaniel, more and more people keep dying, until the killer targets somebody much closer to home than Alex would've ever guessed.

León "Leo" Rivera. 33, he/him, bisexual. Writes the pages on politics at the Herald & is James' partner. He's also bilingual, and is who wrote the articles osn the original Ekker trial, 11 years ago.

Nathaniel Ekker. 23, he/him, queer. Tailor, and the son of the woman whose murder was the focus of the Ekker trial. He agreed to do Alex's article on the condition it would be anonymous (and it was).

Arthur Hall. 30, he/him, cishet. Investigative reporter at the Volimere Daily, and Alex's (friendly) rival. Also one of her closest friends.

re: last post to more or less procure a rec list. some short story collections i finished recently that i thought were pretty fucking good: friday black by nana kwame adjei-brenyah; all that’s left to you by ghassan kanafani. go read those. also finished my reread of kafka on the shore by haruki murakami which is sooo fucking beautifully insane. on the beach by nevil shute i finished like 3 days ago and it’s still fucking haunting me fucked up book. and then rapid fire round of plays; marisol by josé rivera. intimate apparel by lynn nottage; and i’m midway through for colored girls by ntozake shange which has a really interesting concoction of poetry/drama formatting….

MURDERED: Rivera/Martinez (Prime Time True Crime)

On June 24, 2019, 28-year-old Alyssa Marie Torres shot and killed her 54-year-old stepfather, Felix Rivera, and her 8-year-old daughter, Amarilyss Martinez, at their Port St. Lucie, Florida home. She had been staying at her parents house for several months. Alyssa used a handgun she’d taken from her stepfather’s closet and waited until a little after midnight to shoot him once in the head from the foot of his bed. The shot immediately woke her 53-year-old mother, Marisol Rivera, who suffered injuries to her head and face during a brutal pistol-whipping, but luckily, none were life threatening. Alyssa then ran down a hallway and shot Amarilyss in the head. After the murders, she fled the scene in her Toyota Rav 4. Alyssa was located in nearby Fort Pierce, about 8 miles from her parent's home, and arrested without incident, after a brief manhunt. She admitted to the killings and was charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Alyssa Torres pled guilty to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to three life terms without the possibility of parole on December 4, 2020. Mental health issues were cited as the cause for the murders.

Mario Rafael Llergo indicó que tanto el presidente López Obrador como la  coordinadora nacional, Claudia Sheinbaum, respaldaron la entrega de al menos cinco candidaturas a mujeres El diputado de Morena, Mario Rafael Llergo Latournerie, anunció que el partido no impugnará el acuerdo del Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) que busca promover la paridad de género en las candidaturas para las gubernaturas. El representante de Morena indicó que tanto el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador como la coordinadora nacional de la 4T, Claudia Sheinbaum, respaldaron la entrega de al menos cinco candidaturas a mujeres. Llergo Latournerie afirmó que Morena acompañará la decisión mayoritaria.
