‘Are you excited?’ Joe said to Hallie, his daughter, who was bouncing up and down in his arms as she watched the giant caterpillar race around the track in front of them.
‘Caty pil,’ she squealed clapping her hands together, making him chuckle. Joe pushed a loose tendril of hair out of her face but as he did his gaze fell on his wife who was looking at the ride with worry.
‘Are you okay?’ he asked with concern trying to figure out what she was looking at. They were waiting in line for their first ride of the day. Though Hallie was a little young for rides he couldn’t resist bringing her to the local fete. It was a hive of activity. Food stalls, little fun fair games and a few rides with a section for little kids.
‘Yeah, I just don’t think I’m going to fit on this one,’ Y/N said looking down at her bump. Baby no. 2 was well on its way and once she spotted the locking bar that secured the riders in she realised she was going to have to sit this one out.
‘Dang it,’ Joe said spotting the bar as she pointed it out.
‘Dan it!’ Hallie copied.
‘Don’t worry sweetie, dada will take you on the ride and hopefully not teach you anymore curse words eh?’
‘Hey, I make no promises,’ Joe chuckled.
The ride had stopped now and riders were decanting allowing the line they were in to start moving. Y/N stepped out of the way and watched as Joe carried Hallie into the metal enclosure that the ride was in. She watched him as she wandered around to a spot where she could sit and watch them. She found a bench outside the wire fence that separated the ride from the rest of the fete. She could hear the screams and the giggles from everyone around her but she wasnt focused on that. Her gaze was looking at the big metal ride waiting for her baby and her husband to circle past.
All of a sudden the ride started whirring into action. It wasn’t fast or loud but noticeable that it got a few glances. There was a gentle chugging noise as the long caterpillar-shaped carriage started moving. Y/N got to her feet. Finally, as it moved past her Y/N spotted Hallie and Joe now buckled into their seats each as excited as one another. Hallie was pointing at everything that she could see when she spotted her mother looking at them. Y/N waved and Hallie waved back with a squeal.
‘Hi mama,’ Joe said with a smile.
Y/N smiled back and blew a kiss their way as the ride rounded a corner and they disappeared out of sight. She sighed a happy smile. As they left her view her mind wandered to how lucky she was. Even if she couldn't enjoy the fun today she was still lucky to have memories like these.
She remembered the first night she had ever met Joe. It had been at a party of a friend of a friend. She was young, free and single back then and the opportunity to party even at someone’s house that she didn’t even know didn’t discourage her. She had a good buzz going. A few drinks and home with her friend and then a couple more beers once she reached the party.
The party was pretty dry. More of a drink and chit-chat type of thing than the dancing on tables vibe she wanted. She didn’t mind though she figured she sink a few more drinks enough to get her buzzed enough so she wouldn’t have to spend much at the club she planned to head to later. As her friend’s friend came over to speak to them Y/N got bored and decided to head upstairs to the bathroom. After she had finished she decided she didn't want to go back downstairs and decided to have a mooch around upstairs. She had only made it into the first room when she heard a voice behind her say, ‘you know it’s rude to snoop right?’
She turned around to find a man watching her. He was standing in the door frame watching her with a small smirk which grew as she jumped at the sound of his voice. He was cute in a sort of boy next door kind of way.
‘I was looking for the bathroom,’ she said.
‘The bathroom you just came out of?’ he retorted.
‘Oh, um, well…’
‘It’s okay,’ he chuckled, ‘looking to escape huh?’
‘A little,’ she smiled.
‘Me too,’ he said sitting down on the bed, ‘care to join me?’
‘Um,’ she said clearly looking for an excuse.
‘I’ve got booze,’ he said pulling two beer bottles out from under the bed. She smirked and sat down on the bed beside him watching him as he twisted off the bottle cap and handed her a beer.
‘How come you have booze up here?’ she asked as she took a tentative sip.
‘I figured if I was going to do some hiding I best have an excuse when I went back to the party,’ he chuckled taking a swig too.
‘Smart,’ she giggled, ‘so you don’t like parties?’
‘No, I do, just not parties where I don’t know anyone.’
‘So why did you come?’ she asked.
‘It’s a friend's party I wanted to support him…besides it’s not so bad,’ he shrugged.
‘Why?’ she asked.
‘Because I get to speak to a pretty girl like you,’ he said with a small smile.
‘I’m Joe by the way,’ he said. Y/N could do nothing other than nod. At that moment, Y/N felt her heart melt. She had never thought that someone could fall in love with someone in an instant. But looking at this guy, looking at this sweet cute guy in front of her made her reevaluate everything.
She was pulled out of her thoughts as the carriage rattled by once more. Hallie was standing up on her seat now as Joe tried to force her to sit back down, evidently struggling. Y/N chuckled.
‘Sit down for mama,’ Y/N called over the fence.
‘Mama!!’ Hallie squealed waving again. Joe threw her a cute frown which made her giggle. Joe was the best dad. Even when Hallie pushed them to their wit's end. Even when she refused to sleep or decided to drop down in the middle of K-Mart screaming bloody murder he was always loving and understanding to the nth degree. Meeting him at the party all those years ago was the luckiest thing that had ever happened to her. She smiled thinking about all of the things that had happened since then.
Moving in together, getting married, Hallie and now their second little bundle of joy on the way.
She was one lucky woman.
