Jasmine Potter loved Hogwarts. Granted she loved her home too but there was something about the old castle she adored. She used to reason it was because she loved to learn, absorbing every topic in every subject like a sponge as her teachers moulded her into an exceptional witch. Or it could have been her friends. She wasn’t like her brother, outgoing and friends with everyone, but she did have a circle of close friends who filled her days with happiness and laughter. Maybe it was just the castle itself, its scenic views and cosy atmosphere making it feel like a home away from home. There was nothing not to adore about Hogwarts even with the stresses and tensions of her final school year and the threat of the real-world looming.
And yet as she embarked upon the start of term she found the positive force that Hogwarts was not feeling the same way. Her classes didn’t spark her interest and though she was happy to see her friends she didn’t feel the urge to get too involved with them, preferring to stay in her dormitory or the library, her mind on a book. Not that she managed to keep her mind on whatever she was reading much. No, her mind was on Sirius as it had been the minute he’d put an end to their thing. It was consuming. Thinking of him, missing him, loving him.
Without him around everything just felt duller and it wasn’t as if she could explain that to her friends or her brother. In putting an end to it he’d buried the secret with her, doomed her to keep it inside whilst heartbreak made her insides rot. Today she tried to put it out of her mind, the aching inside her, and to her surprise she found her book on Troll Revolts somewhat engaging even if they did only take the edge off her restlessness.
Still she would’ve taken droning passages about troll on wizard violence any day if it got her out of whatever James wanted. He appeared out of nowhere, rolling over the back of the couch she was sitting on in the common room until he was sat beside her, his head on her shoulder as he read her book.
‘What?’ she said irritably, shifting away from his mop of messy dark hair which was obscuring her view of the page.
‘What you doing?’ James asked, unbothered by her standoffish demeanour as he pulled back and looked at her.
‘Reading,’ she said, ignoring him.
‘For a lesson?’ James asked.
‘Because I want to,’ she corrected.
‘Good then it’s optional,’ he smiled, ‘and you can hang out with me.’
‘No thanks,’ she muttered. That had been the other issue, in trying to put the whole thing out of her mind James had sort of become collateral damage. It wasn’t as though she intended to distance herself from him it was just that when it came to James, Sirius had the monopoly on his time. Where there was one there was the other and she couldn’t find it in her to be around him just even if staying friends had been one of his mantras for them no longer being together.
‘Oh come on I feel like I hardly ever see you these days,’ James said grabbing the book from her hands which caused her to jump at him, snatching it back from his hands before she settled back into her seat and snapped, ‘we’re fraternal twins not conjoined ones.’
‘Alright touchy,’ he said rolling his eyes. Jasmine glanced up from her book, earning herself a kind smile from her brother though she was being nothing but awkward to his friendly advances.
‘I’ve just been busy,’ she said though that was a lie. She’d never been as on top of work or refused to hang out with as many friends as this term.
‘That’s what you get for being the studious one,’ James said.
‘One of us has to be,’ she replied.
‘And it isn’t going to be me,’ James said.
‘That’s no way for a head boy to talk,’ she mused, feeling a smile creep onto her face.
‘Maybe I need some guidance,’ James smiled before his face turned begging, ‘come on hang out with me.’
‘Can’t,’ she sighed. She’d been enjoying this bit, just the two of them but no doubt hanging out with him would turn into hanging out his friends which was something she wasn’t prepared for just yet.
‘Why not?’ James pouted, resting his head on the back of the couch.
‘Hang out with your friends if you’ve got nothing to do,’ she said, dodging the question as best she could.
‘Can’t,’ James said simply.
‘Why?’ she asked, not looking up from her book though her ears had pricked up with curiosity.
‘Moony has prefect duties,’ he said with an eyeroll that was unbecoming of the head boy, ‘Petes got some gobstones thing and Sirius has got a new girlfriend.’
‘Oh,’ Jasmine said, the rotten feeling in her gut washing all the way up to her stomach and making her feel sick. And yet she couldn’t stop herself from asking as if she needed to ensure it hurt just as much as she thought it would, ‘who?’
‘Maria Caldwell in the year below us,’ James said with a yawn.
‘That’s nice,’ Jasmine replied, trying to keep her voice steady. James didn’t seem to notice offering her a snort of derision.
‘Hardly,’ he said, ‘she follows him around like a lost puppy.’
‘Like you and Lil then,’ she said, though her quipping felt hollow.
‘I’ll have you know she loves lost puppy charm,’ James said.
‘Yeah she only thinks you’re a pillock instead of a prat these days,’ Jasmine replied earning a shove from her brother.
‘Oh go on Jas,’ he begged. Jasmine looked at him. He had a point, it had been weeks since they’d hung out properly and it wasn’t as though it was his fault not to mention it was just going to be the two of them though she wanted to make sure that was a certainty and so she said, ‘fine but we’re doing what I want to do.’
‘Deal,’ James said with a grin.
✵✵✵
Whilst she had enjoyed spending time with her brother Jasmine’s mood didn’t lighten much though she figured that had more to do with the fact that over the next few weeks she was relentlessly subjected to Sirius and his new girlfriend or rather girlfriends. She didn’t know if they were for her benefit, she couldn’t see how hey was given he never outright flaunted them in front of her rather his trysts existed in places she was, but they spoke volumes to her. As Maria turned into Pamela and Pamela into Nova and then Nova into Jane Jasmine got the picture he was trying to convey. He was not a relationship person.
And as she watched him strut out of the great hall, his arm slung around the shoulders of Calliope Clearwater she couldn’t help but wonder how she could’ve thought he was. How had she been so silly to let herself get so lost in her feelings for him. She had hoped he felt the same or she thought he had but evidently she’d been wrong. That only soured her mood more.
‘What’s up with you?’ Marlene said as she stabbed her piece of steak and angrily started cutting it with her knife.
‘Nothing,’ Jasmine muttered, finding her irritation not easing through the ferocious sawing of her dinner.
‘Oh come off it not even you’re this quiet,’ Mary said making her look up. It was just the three of them at the table, Lily who had been a tight knit member of her friend group now opting to sit with James and his friends. That was a tiny comfort, if she was going to bare her soul she didn’t need it being relayed to her brother.
‘It’s nothing,’ Jasmine lied.
‘Nothing but a little lovesickness,’ Mary asked raising an eyebrow.
‘How do you know that?’ Jasmine asked flummoxed.
‘I know that look,’ she said, with a smug smile that made her brown eyes twinkle, ‘so go on whose the lucky boy?’
‘Ooh is he in our year?’ Marlene asked excitedly.
‘It’s no one!’ Jasmine hissed, hoping they’d lower their voices as a couple of heads twitched their way before going back to their dinners unable to hear anything juicy.
‘Like hell it isn’t,’ Mary scoffed, folding her arms and resting them on the wooden table as she stared Jasmine down. She tried to ignore her, she didn’t exactly fancy getting into the details, not when they still made a dull ache form in her stomach. But Mary wasn’t exactly a tactful soul. If she wanted gossip she’d pry it from you one way or the other, the other usually being that she’;d fill in the gaps regardless of if they added up or not.
‘It’s a boy…from home,’ Jasmine said. It wasn’t technically a lie considering their relationship had began within her home and didn’t extend beyond them coming back to school.
‘Home?’ Marlene asked curiously.
‘Yeah, we er had this thing over summer,’ Jasmine said quietly as flashes of her and Sirius ran through her mind.
‘Ooh!’ Mary squealed.
‘Yeah but no one knows,’ Jasmine said hurriedly, ‘you can’t tell anyone.’
‘Ooh a secret romance! How exciting!’ Marlene said with a smile. Jasmine returned it weekly.
‘What’s he like?’ Mary pressed.
‘He’s…amazing. Funny and so sweet,’ Jasmine said honestly. The words stung her tongue as they came out but not because they were untrue it was that because even though he’d hurt her those things were still true.
‘Fit?’ Mary giggled.
‘Yeah,’ Jasmine said with a blush.
‘So what happened?’ Mary said excitedly, frowning as Jasmine’s smile dimmed.
‘We had to end it,’ she said quietly, her confidence ebbing as they got down to the bones of the matter and her friends faces went from excited to pity.
‘Aw, that’s a shame,’ Marlene said.
‘Yeah, how come?’ Mary asked, never one to hold off getting the scoop. Jasmine hesitated, realising that she hadn’t prepared for anything further than light questioning so instead of lying she decided to go down a route that was truth adjacent.
‘Our lifestyles don’t fit together,’ she shrugged as casually as she could muster.
‘Is he a muggle?’ Marlene asked immediately.
‘Yeah,’ Jasmine lied which fortunately her friends appeared to buy as Mary smiled and said, ‘well maybe one day and if not we can always help.’
‘How?’ Jasmine asked, unaware how they could make her foul mood improve.
‘Well we’ve been through a few heartbreaks,’ Mary said.
‘Though there’s not much time between Mary’s heartbreaks admittedly,’ Marlene teased making Jasmine laugh and Mary roll her eyes, ‘anyway, we have just the treatment. Listening to sad songs-’
‘Eating your feelings,’ Marlene countered.
‘Dating someone knew,’ Mary teased making them laugh.
‘Whatever you want,’ Marlene said.
‘Thanks guys,’ Jasmine said. And though admittedly it didn’t immediately wrench her from the depths of despair she felt a touch better.
If Sirius could move on then so could she.

The end of summer came as fast as they all do whether that was because it was their last official summer break before they left school for good or that once Remus and Peter landed at the Potter’s things became a lot more chaotic Daisy didn't know. What she did realise was that rest became the enemy with the group trying to fit as many activities in per day before they were confined to the castle and wetter, wilder weather conditions. Still she didn’t let James, Sirius and Lily get their way entirely and insisted on a couple of days spent lounging around the house, playing in the games room or sunbathing on the back lawn. Admittedly the sunbathing had more to do with the reaction her and Lily’s bikini clad forms got with James’ tripping over himself, Sirius far more affectionate than he normally was with an audience and Peter desperate to look anywhere but in their direction. At the end of the day Daisy had an ongoing tally with Remus and the pair of them were actively baiting the boys into increasing their scores by a look here or a touch there.
It was a nice change from the chaos. An easy-going afternoon which varied drastically to the one they’d spent in Diagon Alley getting this year's school supplies. The day had started out like every other trip they’d done in years previous. They had managed to get their new books from Flourish and Blotts and new potion ingredients from Mr Mulpepper’s Apothecary but as they had headed into Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour they found it virtually empty when it should’ve been crammed full of students and general shoppers. Instead Alice sat alone behind the counter - not rushed off her feet as they were accustomed to seeing her when they visited at the height of summer.
‘Oh thank god! Hi guys,’ she said as she heard them enter, leaping up from the stool she’d been sitting on though she still remained behind the counter which encased dozens of tubs of brightly coloured delicious looking ice cream.
‘Hey Al. Happy to see us?’ Daisy chuckled, the first one in and close enough she could give her a hug over the counter as the others offered their various greetings though admittedly only the twins seemed intent on saying a proper hello with the rest surveying the various flavours as they entered a hushed debate.
‘Too bloody right I’m bored stiff,’ she said, ‘what can I get you?’
‘Well we want you if you can spare a minute,’ Lily smiled.
‘Or ten,’ Daisy added.
‘We thought we could have some ice cream and hang out here for a bit. We don’t have to head back for another hour or so,’ Lily explained, ‘if that’s not a problem.’
‘Shouldn’t be we’re hardly rushed off our feet are we,’ Alice said gesturing to the empty shop. It was long and narrow with booths and tables that could house up to six people lining each wall and yet it was empty bar from a couple of school kids Daisy recognised from the fourth year sitting by the window and a mother with her toddler who seemed very intent on smushing his ice cream cone directly onto the tabletop rather than into his mouth which made her keep having to redirect him, muttering cleaning spells every twenty seconds to prevent the wooden table from getting sticky with strawberry ice cream. Finally she caved and took him and his cone out into the alley so that the debris could litter the cobbles instead.
Given it was a summer’s day she had thought it odd it was so quiet. Normally Alice would only be able to spare ten minutes here and there, longer if her dad and brothers were working too, given that the shop was the perfect pitstop for families gathering their school supplies for the new year, as they were, or just for kids to hang out when they had nothing to do in the holidays. However she didn’t have time to dwell on her uneasiness for long as James swanned over, evidently the first to make his choice on what ice cream he wanted, as he said, ‘in that case I’ll have two scoops of the raspberry ripple and a butterbeer please and whatever everyone else wants.’
There was some arguing after that with everyone trying to stuff his galleons back in his pocket but he forced Alice to take it, threatening to put it in the till himself and use a sealing charm. Everyone knew he was bluffing but the warmth of an August day made it hard to find the energy to argue with him and so one by one they gave Alice their orders and then plonked themselves in a large booth by the window opposite the one the fourth years had just left. As the boys started to talk, very quickly getting into a conversation about the new flavour Mr Fortescue had cooked up, apple crumble and custard which Peter had opted to try, Daisy watched Alice. Whilst their orders scooped themselves into their respective cones she ran each item through the till which was no different to any other summer except this time there was no queue twenty deep excitedly waiting for her to get done or impatiently tapping their feet as they listened to their children whinge and whine about not getting their ice cream quick enough. Mr Fortescue was not behind the counter running the show as normal to ensure patrons were seen to, paid and out of their seats once done to prevent bottlenecks. There was no squabbling between Alice and her brothers as they got in each other’s way behind the small counter and where her youngest brother would normally have been wiping down the table next to them he was nowhere to be seen leaving the job to Alice though If someone else were to come In there were at good dozen tables they could opt for before they got to the one beside them still messy with empty cups and ice cream spoons. Daisy was so lost in her thoughts she didn’t even realise Alice was now coming towards them, their ice creams nestled in a silver cone stand that she placed down on the table in front of them.
‘Those two are yours,’ she said gesturing to the end two for Daisy and Sirius to pick up, ‘Pete that’s yours. And the rest are all the same. I’ll just grab the drinks.’
‘I’ll help,’ Remus said, sliding from the booth so he could help Alice bring seven bottles of butterbeer back to the table which they doled out amongst the group. Once everyone was seen to Alice dragged a chair up to the end of the booth and took a seat beside Daisy.
‘There we are,’ Alice said, picking up her own ice cream and taking a lick as she sat down.
‘Thanks Al,’ Lily said.
‘You’re welcome,’ Alice said, taking another quick lick of her ice cream before she added, ‘I’m just glad of something to do.’
‘Slow day huh?’ Daisy asked, a niggle in her stomach even though her words were joking.
‘All days are slow these days,’ Alice sighed.
‘What did you do, give someone food poisoning?’ James joked earning a couple of chuckles here and there but Alice’s face, which was normally bright and hopeful, fell making Daisy’s unease deepen.
‘Haven’t you heard?’ she asked curiously.
‘Heard what?’ Daisy asked.
‘About the robberies,’ she said, causing a sea of confused faces.
‘What robberies?’ Lily asked worriedly. Alice sighed.
‘Dad said they’d been trying to keep it out of the papers,’ Alice muttered though as she realised everyone was still waiting for her to explain she didn’t say anything and merely used her ice cream cone to point to the shop over the road. As far as Daisy could remember it had been an old antiques shop full of weird and wonderful wizarding artifacts – things that no doubt Euphemia would buy on a day out shopping and stuff on a shelf or end table to fade into the background even though the price would be eye watering. Now however it was empty. The large windows were dusty but clean enough to make out that there was nothing but the counter inside. No vases and lamps in the window. No ornately carved furniture cluttering the tiny aisles of the store. Just four walls barren of anything and a marble counter servicing no one.
‘What would someone rob the antiques shop for?’ Peter asked curiously.
‘What do people normally rob shops for thicko,’ James said, rolling his eyes.
‘Yeah but you can’t exactly apparate with a wardrobe up your sleeve,’ Lily reasoned, making Peter smile smugly at James who looked away and started to angrily lick at his ice cream, unaccustomed to Lily taking someone else’s side.
‘What did they take?’ Sirius said, ignoring their little spat, too intrigued at what had been happening in their world whilst they’d been enjoying a blissfully ignorant summer.
‘No one seems to know,’ Alice said, pulling her gaze from where she’d been staring at the empty shop, feeling the same worry she did every time she thought about what had happened just a stone’s throw away from her home, ‘they’re not really taking anything of value. I mean there were at least a dozen things they could’ve taken and flogged from the antiques shop and they didn’t. It was kind of like they’re looking for something.’
‘Like what?’ Sirius asked.
‘Merlin knows,’ Alice muttered.
‘You don’t think you’ll be next do you?’ Daisy asked worriedly as images of the Fortescue’s lovely parlour being ransacked ran through her mind.
‘Dad doesn’t seem to think so,’ Alice said.
‘Why not?’ James asked.
‘Yeah maybe you shouldn’t be in the shop on your own,’ Remus said, his eyes flicking to the back of the shop.
‘I’m not dads in the back but there’s been no point in having us all out-front working. Geralds even gone and got a job in the ministry to make up for the money we’ve been losing out on,’ Alice said. Daisy frowned. She liked Gerald, Alice’s older brother, but she knew he wasn’t the official type. It had always been the plan that he’d stay on and take over the family business when the time came so for him to have to go and work somewhere else spoke volumes. She wondered why they hadn’t seen any of it, how dire the situation was. Over the summer they’d kept an eye on the prophet but between articles about the Chudley Cannons winning the league and adverts for Fleamont’s Sleekeazy Hair Tonic there wasn’t any clues that anything had been a miss.
‘Still if it’s been random,’ Remus reasoned.
‘Well my dad doesn’t think it is,’ Alice said sheepishly, ‘every shop they’ve attacked the owners have been…’
‘Muggleborn,’ Daisy said queasily.
‘Or half-blood,’ Alice said, confirming her suspicions that this wasn’t just a speight of robberies and something rather more sinister. She swallowed thickly, trying to ignore the lump in her throat as she said, ‘it’s the death eaters isn’t it.’
‘No one really knows who it is,’ Alice said, not relieving her unease at all, ‘they’ve either wiped people’s memories or made it so they’re blinded when things are going on. In and out within ten minutes but like I said that’s because they’re not really taking anything.’
‘So it’s for whatever they’re hunting for?’ Peter asked.
‘Or panic,’ Sirius muttered bitterly.
‘Either way it’s working. The alley has been the quietest I’ve ever seen it,’ Alice said looking glumly out the window. Where the street would normally be bustling with people passing by the window every single second now it was one every minute or so and even then it was at a hurried pace as if they didn’t want to be there. Daisy wondered how they hadn’t noticed it when they were out on the street, too busy enjoying themselves she reasoned.
‘We didn’t even notice,’ Lily said sadly.
‘Too busy talking,’ James said, using his free arm to wrap around her shoulders and pull her to him. Lily smiled at him sadly.
‘It’s all anyone has been talking about here,’ Alice replied sadly.
‘But why not put it in the papers? Why keep it a secret?’ Daisy asked.
‘Don’t want to create mass panic I expect,’ Remus said.
‘But we should know what’s going on in our community!’ Daisy said indignantly, ‘what these pillocks are up to.’
‘But they can’t link it to anyone,’ Alice replied, ‘it’s horrible but they’re sneaky. Frank says they are seeing more and more muggleborns going missing but again it’s the ones that don’t have any family and few friends. Their muggle families don’t even know they’re missing because they live within our world and have lost touch or whatever.’
‘What about their friends?’ Peter frowned.
‘Yeah I mean we’d notice if one of us went missing,’ James said.
‘They do that’s who’s been reporting them missing but the ministry haven’t been doing much so told. They keep talking as if they’ve just gone back to muggle life or something,’ Alice said.
‘They wouldn’t do that,’ Lily said firmly.
‘But what would they gain from getting rid of them? I mean it doesn’t sound like they’re important or anything,’ James said, earning a stern glare from both of the twins and a kick in the shin from Sirius which made him back track, ‘I didn’t mean it like that! I mean they’re obviously not high up in government or people of influence. Surely it would make sense to harm someone like the minister or-’
‘And show their hand early. Think about it, they’re getting something out of it if everyone is talking about it,’ Remus said.
‘People are terrified,’ Alice corrected, ‘Dad can’t wait to send me back to school under Dumbledore’s watchful eye.’
‘I bet,’ Peter said.
‘Which is why he’s not thrilled I applied to be an auror,’ Alice said, looking nervously around the group as she took a self-conscious sip of butterbeer. Daisy felt floored by the revelation but only because it wasn’t something she’d seen Alice being interested in. James and Sirius felt like a natural fit. They were quick thinking, clever and personable. Even Frank seemed a better candidate even if he was more mellow than the boys. But Alice felt too nice. She was clever of course and worked well with others but to Daisy she felt out of place.
Evidently Lily had the same feelings as she said, ‘what? When?!’
‘Early summer,’ Alice said, looking towards Sirius and James as she explained, ‘I know you two applied early but Frank helped me do the application and they offered me the exam. I know what it sounds like but well it’s the right thing to do isn’t it with how it’s all headed. Hardly going to be of use scooping rum and raisin when the alleys gone to ruin.’
‘It doesn’t sound like anything,’ James said, ‘sounds like you know what you want and went for it. Besides, it sounds like the ministry could do with as many sane people as they can get.’
‘James is right,’ Sirius agreed, ‘better you taking a slot on the team than Snape or someone like him.’
That was something Daisy had to agree on. And listening to her explain made it make sense. Of course Alice had thought about helping in whatever way she could. Knowing it was a hard toll and maybe not what she had planned didn’t deter because she was too good hearted. Unwilling to let good people be hurt when she could do something about it. That was the Alice she knew.
And though it didn’t feel great for Daisy to think of not one but three of her friends signing up to be practically on the front lines when this thing got to blows there was solace in her words. It wasn’t happening yet. They still had another school year to at least try and delay the inevitable. Another year in a safe haven. Even if it did house mini death eaters they’d be being watched this term better than the ministry was watching actual death eaters it seemed. At least people still had faith in Dumbledore.
Daisy was busy thinking about that, it had been something she’d scarcely been able to stop thinking about even throughout their remaining days at the Potter’s and the train to Hogwarts. Even now sitting at the Gryffindor table in the great hall watching terrified first years be sorted into their houses it took precedence. So much so that she didn’t realise Sirius was in a world of his own too until she caught James’s eye across the table and watched his gaze flit to his friend and back to her. Daisy followed where he was staring, finding his narrowed gaze locked on the Slytherin table across the room, moving up and down as if he was counting each and every one of them.
‘What is it?’ she whispered as another first year was called up to the front and scurried to put themselves under the sorting hat McGonagall was holding.
‘Nothing,’ he said, looking away once he realised he was caught. Daisy said nothing but tugged on his sleeve impatiently which made him look at her irritably before he relented and muttered, ‘Reg isn’t here.’
Daisy and James, who’d been listening in, immediately looked in the direction of the Slytherin table to see if they could spot the familiar high cheekbones or luscious long locks of the other Black. James even craned his neck to look right at the end up near the doors earning himself a hissed, ‘stop looking would you,’ from Sirius.
‘Sorry,’ he said sheepishly as he turned around and leaned in just enough that he could hear what was being said without being caught in conversation by any of the teachers. Daisy pretended to look back at the sorting ceremony as she muttered, ‘where do you think he is?’
‘Who knows,’ Sirius said, far too casually given how much she knew he cared.
‘You don’t think they’d still be mad about what happened last summer do you?’ she asked, risking a look at him and finding concerned grey eyes looking at her.   ‘He failed though. Barty Crouch got the blame,’ James reasoned.
‘And the glory,’ Sirius reasoned.
‘But you don’t think he’d be in trouble, right?’ Daisy asked. She didn’t like Regulus but it wasn’t exactly personal. It was mostly on Sirius’ behalf, for the turmoil he put him through. Even if he did believe the rubbish they spouted it was only because he’d been in the cooking pot longer. Sirius had gotten a chance to escape. What were the odds two of them were going to have that chance? Especially if your personality didn’t lend itself to being outlandish and daring, like Sirius was, she could see why wanting to fade into the background or appease their gorgon of a mother may have its appeals.
‘With my parents definitely,’ Sirius grumbled.
‘But with him, he who must not be named?’ Daisy urged.
‘I don’t know Dais,’ Sirius sighed exasperatedly, ‘I doubt he’d even be bothered; I mean he’s just some school kid.’
‘But he’s gonna be one of them,’ James countered, talking out of the side of his mouth as he felt McGonagall’s beady eyes on them. He waited for a moment watching as the final first year was called and sorted into Hufflepuff by which time Dumbledore stood and spoke, his usual mantra of welcoming the students though none of them failed to notice a mention of vigilance, preparation and comradery which he linked in with exams though they doubted it had anything to do with sitting their NEWTs.
So as he declared they all tuck in James leaned in fully looking at his friend as he said, ‘if he’s going to be one of them why bother coming back?’
‘What else is he going to do?’ Daisy asked, after all Hogwarts was her safe haven why not his even if he was playing for the other side.
‘I’m just saying if they want him to prove his worth or whatever after having failed they’re not going to want him here to do it. I mean what’s he going to do? It’s not like he could get away with anything Dumbledore has to be watching him,’ James said.
‘But to not come back at all would be mental!’ Daisy protested. James shrugged and leaned back in his seat so that he could transfer a humongous piece of battered fish onto his plate as Peter started to talk to him. Daisy looked worriedly at Sirius who shrugged too.
Of course he knew he shouldn’t care where his brother was. The line had been drawn in the sand far too long ago but he had to admit he would rather him here than wherever else.
✵✵✵
Dinner lasted around an hour giving everyone ample chance to mix around the tables and get reacquainted with friends from other houses before they were shipped back to their common rooms ready to get an early night for the start of lessons tomorrow morning. Yet as the benches screeched back and hundreds of students began to filter out Sirius was stopped by a hand on his shoulder and turned to find McGonagall standing amongst the sea of first years moving past her in order to keep up with Lily who would be leading them to the tower.
‘Everything okay professor?’ he asked, feeling Daisy stop too, watching them curiously.
‘Would you please come with me Mr Black?’ she asked. Sirius hesitated and looked to Daisy who seemed reluctant to let him go alone fearing it was something to do with Regulus’ absence but she knew there was no arguing so she merely said, ‘we’ll meet you in the common room okay?’
‘Yeah, see you,’ Sirius nodded before he followed McGonagall who parted the sea of students effortlessly away from the entrance to the great hall and through a door behind the teachers' table. He followed her down a staircase and into a large room he recognised to be the trophy room as it was laden with cases, cabinets and tables full of various shields, cups and medals. He’d been in here before, usually in detention, except where he’d normally been left to his own company whilst scrubbing each inch of metal clean Dumbledore was here. He stood with his back to him, perusing the names on various trophies in a glass cabinet on the other side of the room and he didn’t even turn as they entered though Sirius was sure McGonagall’s shoes clicked along the floor loud enough to get his attention. She didn’t say anything, offering him no more than a nod before she hurried back upstairs leaving him watching his professor waiting for him to acknowledge his presence.
‘These trophies could do with a good polish. I dare say they’ve been sorely neglected given the absence of detentions over the summer,’ Dumbledore announced, breaking the uncomfortable silence which Sirius silently thanked him for. He was looking at him now, his blue eyes peering over his half-moon spectacles as he took Sirius in. It made the boy straighten up self-consciously. He had an inkling on why he was here but the silence and small talk was making him nervous. Dumbledore didn’t seem bothered and continued, ‘it seems to be a particular favourite of Filch.’
‘Yeah I’m aware,’ Sirius said, realising how snippy his tone sounded only once it was out his mouth forcing him to smile in order to soften the edges of his words. Dumbledore smiled, ‘I bet you are. Though I can’t help but notice your incidences of detention have decreased considerably. Mr Potters too. Must have some good influences.’
‘Must do,’ Sirius said, his mind wandering to Daisy. The old man had a point considering that since he and James had started dating, well for Sirius since he had become friends with Daisy, they had spent considerably less time in detention, too preoccupied to get in trouble.
‘Perhaps though I find even the most adventurous boys can become the most refined and sensible men,’ Dumbledore mused.
‘Sir?’ Sirius asked though he was tracking the praise enough for it to make his cheeks heat up.
‘I expect you’re wondering why I’ve brought you here,’ Dumbledore asked, moving forward to look at a trophy on a table closer by. The pivot was enough to knock Sirius off kilter but he recovered well and replied, ‘well I thought I might be in trouble but to get in bother this early would be a record even for me.’
‘Quite,’ Dumbledore agreed, lifting the lid and looking inside a gold trophy before back at Sirius as he said, ‘I don’t know if you’ve noticed your brother is not present this evening.’
‘I have,’ Sirius said, feeling his gaze weightier than expected as if he was waiting for him to give him something. A clue of where he was or upset at his absence. Sirius tried to keep his face neutral.
‘I have received an owl informing me that he will not be attending Hogwarts until after the Christmas break,’ Dumbledore said. Though his mind was buzzing immediately, Sirius tried again to keep his expression unbothered, offering little more than a, ‘Sir?’
‘It seems he has been on a holiday with your father to France which they have had to extend,’ Dumbledore explained.
‘Oh,’ Sirius replied, his mind spinning. Of course he’d been on holidays before but they were never like the ones James or Peter took. They were all about networking. Days of boring dinners and parties whichever family member had opted to host them. And his mother would never dare let them miss school for socialising. To thrive in high society was all well and good to risk them falling behind or failing, or more accurately giving them an excuse to blame anything other than their own lack of intellect or discipline, was not a concession she’d ever make.
‘Unless there was a reason,’ a voice in the back of his mind whispered. Sirius shivered inwardly because the voice had a point, if she was condoning this there must be a reason for it and all of them couldn’t be good. He must have gone quiet, the worries in his mind evident on his face as Dumbledore said, ‘bitter are the wars between brothers.’
‘I never chose war,’ Sirius said indignantly. Dumbledore smiled softly and said, ‘no, of course not but sometimes war chooses us and we must all accept the call when it comes.’
‘How if we’re not allowed to prepare?’ Sirius asked, again irked by the old man’s penchant for words rather than actions. It was all very well asking people to prepare for war but what was the point if they weren’t given the tools to do so.
‘Panicking people and preparing oneself are not the same thing,’ Dumbledore countered.
‘Professor?’ Sirius asked, the thread of the conversation quickly unspooling between them.
‘Not all of us are made to be soldiers,’ Dumbledore explained though Sirius still wasn’t following. The older man didn’t seem to care as he checked his pocket watch before looking back at Sirius and gesturing to the door he’d come through as he added, ‘you should go. Be with your friends, I’m sure they are waiting.’
Sirius didn’t argue and muttered goodbye before he trudged back up the stairs he’d come down. The great hall was empty now, the lamps burning lower than they had been and the sky a deep blue colour as night fell though the stars and firelight glinted off the polished wood of the long tables. Sirius hurried through the hall and up through the castle until he was safely through the portrait hole. His friends were all up and waiting for him when he got into the common room. They’d commandeered the old ratty couch and armchairs by the big fire. James and Lily were draped over one another on one end of the couch providing just enough room for Alice and Marlene to squash in at the other end. Peter had taken one chair, his plump form leaving little room for Remus to squeeze in beside him as they might have done in years gone by. Then again, Remus’ lankiness didn’t really lend itself to squeezing into anything these days and so he lay out on the floor, his bones being warmed by the fire which was a welcomed relief as it was coming up to the full moon.
Daisy had taken up the other chair, moving over once she saw him enter no doubt expecting him to slot in beside her but Dumbledore’s chat had stirred up an unease inside him, one that meant he didn’t fancy sitting down here and being interrogated. Though he knew there was no getting out of it, even if he gave them the condensed version, and so went to sit next her but instead opted to perch on the chair arm.
‘What did Dumbledore want?’ James asked, jumping on the question quicker than anyone. Sirius shrugged, ‘just to tell me Reg isn’t coming back until after Christmas.’
‘Really?’ Daisy asked.
‘Yeah,’ Sirius said.
‘Did he say why?’ Lily asked.
‘Some trip out of the country with my father,’ Sirius replied, that knot back in his stomach.
‘What do you suppose that is?’ Remus asked as he pushed himself up off his front until he was sitting up, his legs crossed in front of him. He looked as though he was ready for a discussion but Sirius wished he’d stay put because he didn’t really feel like getting into the long and short of it.
‘Who knows,’ Sirius said casually.
‘I expect it’ll be damage control appeasing what’s his chops,’ James speculated. That was exactly the conclusion Sirius had gotten to on his way up to Gryffindor tower and yet when the words came out of his best friend’s mouth it somehow felt so much worse. He didn’t know what it was but the flippancy of James' words irked him. This wasn’t just soldiers moving around a board. Army generals deciding who would be put on the front lines and who wouldn’t. These were real people. His brother. Regulus was a child and because of him he was now god knows where doing god knows what.
‘But at least he’s back after Christmas right?’ Alice reasoned, ‘that’s good isn’t it.’
‘What for?’ Marlene asked.
‘At least here he’s being watched,’ Alice replied.
‘I doubt Sirius’ mother would let him out of her sight as it is,’ Peter chopped in.
‘Yeah but her idea of what’s right is a bit skewed isn’t it,’ James said. With that Sirius felt his tolerance for discussing anything dry up and climbed up off the sofa causing all eyes to fall on him as he said, ‘I’m going to bed.’
‘It’s still early,’ Daisy said but he didn’t look her way.
‘C’mon mate it’s the first night back,’ James reasoned.
‘I’m tired,’ Sirius said irritably and before anyone else could throw their two pence worth in he muttered goodnight and headed for the stairs.
As he trudged up the stone staircase and into his dorm he sighed. He knew he was being unreasonable to feel annoyed at Dumbledore for not letting them prepare for a fight and simultaneously want to bury his head in the sand just because the subject matter hit a little close to home. But the others didn’t understand. They didn’t know what it was like to know how rotten his family was and still feel the innate urge to defend them. It was one thing for him to snipe and berate his harpy of a mother or his snob of a father but to hear others do it hurt because even if they were abhorrent people they still didn’t want him. To not be wanted was one thing, to not be wanted because you were too moral was another.
He was busy throwing on a t-shirt, happy to get out of the stiff uniform his friends had already dispensed of for the night, when there was a quiet knock on the door before it opened and Daisy popped her head in. He smiled at her but continued to change as she came closer, loitering by the edge of his four poster. He could feel her watching him worriedly but tried to ignore her. He knew she meant well but he had no doubt when she looked at him with those big green eyes and asked him to tell her what was the matter he would. And that meant dealing with these feelings himself.
‘Are you okay?’ she asked quietly after a moment of watching him get changed, angrily throwing clothes back into his trunk.
‘Fine,’ he muttered, not looking up.
‘Pads,’ she said, ‘we said no secrets, remember?’
‘I’m fine Dais,’ he said, finally looking up at her, his grey eyes lighter than they had been downstairs. It wasn’t a lie technically. He would be okay after a minute to think and it wasn’t like he was hiding anything from her as he had told them everything he knew. She still didn’t look convinced so he gave her his most reassuring smile and added, ‘promise.’
‘Okay,’ she said without confidence, ‘I’ll leave you be.’
Sirius watched as she turned and headed to the door. She had barely gotten five steps before the guilt kicked in and he found himself saying, ‘you don’t have to.’
‘I don’t mind,’ she lied.
‘No it’s okay,’ he said, ‘I want you to stay.’
Daisy nodded and moved to sit on the bed, peeling her jumper off and kicking her shoes somewhere under his bed as he moved to set up the record player. His was still at home, doomed to stay there forever, and though this technically belonged to Daisy the moving it between her bedroom and his had eventually gotten too much of a kerfuffle and so it had taken up permanent residence on Sirius’ bedside table, her ever-growing stack of albums in a box under his four poster. He was careful when considering his music choice. Slow and melodic wasn’t his normal choice but he needed time to think and it wasn’t exactly easy to do that with the sounds of Rainbow thrashing in his ears. Eventually he landed on Cold Spring Harbour, rousing romantic revelations peppered in between melodic piano solos.
Daisy waited for him to climb onto his bed before she moved to sit beside him, her head on his shoulder as his arms wrapped around her. And to his surprise his mind that had been whirring since realising Reg was further away than the other side of the dining hall fell silent other than the sound of their breathing and the tinkle of piano keys.
Daisy said nothing but traced soothing shapes on his cotton clad chest. After at least a song and a half Sirius finally spoke, the calm she’d provided making it easier to speak of everything he’d been thinking of though he didn’t dive straight into it instead just muttering, ‘he hates traveling you know.’
‘What?’ Daisy asked. She hadn’t been expecting him to speak and was too busy listening to the sounds of Billy Joel as they floated through the air.
‘Reg, he hates sidelong apparition and flooing. Makes him sick,’ Sirius muttered. Daisy knew this was just the start of whatever he wanted to get off his chest but she still couldn’t hide a sound of surprise at the revelation. She’d never thought about wizards having trouble with inherently wizard things. After all, weren’t they supposed to be better at things like that given they would have been doing it since childhood. Then again she supposed it was only like Petunia growing car sick on their family holiday to Wales. Sirius didn’t seem to notice her surprise and carried on, ‘when we were little, I remember one time we had to go to my aunt's house, mother sent us alone with Kreacher.’
‘Kreacher?’ Daisy asked, faintly aware she’d heard the name before though she couldn’t place it.
‘Our house elf,’ Sirius said.
‘Oh yeah I remember,’ Daisy muttered, recalling him being mentioned when Sirius had discussed his childhood which was rare. By all intents and purposes Kreacher had done most of the rearing. The black children left to their own devices until being shown off like prize cattle.
‘Loves the bones of my mother and detests the rest of us mere mortals,’ Sirius sniped, ‘anyway we landed in their drawing room and I could see he was seconds from spewing so I ‘accidentally’ fell into an expensive Ming vase and endured a twenty-minute lecture so that she wouldn’t spot him vomiting in one of the plant pots.’
‘That was nice of you,’ Daisy said, though none of it sounded that nice. It made her think of days off school where her mother would allow her to lay on the couch with a bottle of Ribena. She’d sometimes even get to watch tv if she was lucky and a trip to the doctors would almost always be followed by a trip to the sweet shop at the end of the high street provided she didn’t tell Lily or Petunia what spoils she had got.
‘Yeah so nice it got me a tanned arse from my father once we got back,’ Sirius grumbled, ‘still I can’t imagine he’d be any different these days. Him or my father which doesn’t bode well for traveling wherever they are.’
‘You really think he’s traveling?’ she asked doubtfully. Of course she didn’t know what was going on but why would they be traveling? What use would Regulus be if they were sent on ‘official’ business. She couldn’t exactly see him pulling off one of the robberies or helping someone ‘disappear’.
Sirius was quiet for a moment whatever it was weighing heavy on his mind before he answered, ‘in a way I hope so. Even if whatever he’s up to is on his behalf…because what’s the alternative? Being stuck in that god awful house not being able to do anything one way or the other.’
‘Pads?’ Daisy said, her heart aching for how forlorn he sounded about the whole thing. He’d never really spoken about his childhood much other than sarcastic drole or disgust that he quickly swept under the carpet. But Daisy knew that was because every time he did it hurt him. As tough as he was on the outside being the black sheep of a bad family still wounded him. Even if he had the Potter’s who showered them all with love and affection it wasn’t the same as your own parents – that she understood though it in a way she guessed it was easier for her because her parents weren’t absent through choice. They hadn’t abandoned her on purpose.
‘Yeah?’ Sirius murmured.
‘You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to,’ she started offering him the decline if he needed it, ‘but is it really that bad? Was it that bad?’
‘Remember your first day at school?’ Sirius said, making her brow furrow as she wondered where he was going with this.
‘Yeah?’ she replied.
‘How did you feel?’ he prompted. Daisy thought back to the first day of Hogwarts. It was such a whirlwind of excitement, anticipation and awe that had left her exhausted but eager to start in the wizarding world. But she had also been a bundle of nerves too. Everything was unfamiliar and strange with every quirk of the unknown hitting her for the first time and a good few weeks after as she settled in.
‘Nervous like I didn’t know what I was doing but excited at the same time,’ Daisy answered honestly.
‘That’s what my house is like only without the excitement and the good bits,’ Sirius replied.
‘What do you mean?’ Daisy asked, pushing up so that she was sitting, so that she could scrutinise every plane of that handsome face. She didn’t know why, probably because she was scared she was pushing him too far and was ready to retreat if needed, but he allowed her to and sat up with her.  Sirius shrugged.
‘You never know what you’re gonna get. What little remark or look will annoy my mother or infuriate my father. We were made for show, two perfect sons to be looked at with no thought or free will and well I ruined that when I came here and got sorted into Gryffindor. Made it worse by becoming friends with half-bloods and blood traitors,’ he said, the last bit devolving into the sneering voice he often used when pretending to be his mother, ‘I bet our relationship would send my mother to an early grave.’
‘I’m sorry,’ Daisy said, feeling as though she was an imposition though she didn’t know why. Sirius snorted, ‘what for? It’s not your fault. It’s not mine either.’
‘Bet it doesn’t always feel like that though,’ Daisy reasoned, making his reassuring smile fade to a look of sadness.
‘No, but I’m glad it’s this way. As shit as it could be I’d rather be who I am, with my people, than part of something just to fit in,’ he admitted. Daisy nodded though she couldn’t help but have more questions. She believed him of course. After all if she hadn’t almost gotten herself killed she would’ve never been part of this either but still she couldn’t help but wonder about Regulus. Lily had been pulled along by her sister into a different world and yet Regulus stayed stuck in the depths of dark wizards, unable to see the light through the trees.
‘What is it like for Regulus?’ she asked after a beat, ‘is she different with him?’
‘Yeah and no,’ he said, ‘when we were kids we were treated the same but Reg… he just wasn’t as tough and well weakness isn’t something my mother treats with kindness.’
‘So that’s why you protected him?’ she probed.
‘Kind of. It wasn’t really protection, more distraction and once I got to school he lost that. I was a lost cause by then an unruly kid failed to be straightened out by school,’ Sirius said.
‘Maybe he saw what happened and was too scared to follow,’ Daisy said. Again Sirius shrugged, ‘maybe. I mean he plays the part of mummy’s perfect little soldier well enough.’
‘Maybe it is all an act. Maybe once he’s of age he’ll see sense,’ Daisy said though there was little belief in it.
‘Maybe. That’s if my parents don’t make him do something daft beforehand,’ Sirius said grimly, ‘maybe they’ll see he’s not fit for war like Dumbledore does.’
‘What did Dumbledore say?’ Daisy asked, if she was being honest she’d forgotten they’d even had words, Sirius and his hellish relations front and centre of her brain.
‘Not really sure. The old codger barely makes sense at the best of times but he basically yammered on telling us we should carry on learning as we have been doing,’ Sirius said, taking her hand in his as his thumb danced across her tanned knuckles.
‘But they told us we can’t have the club anymore,’ Daisy said.
‘Not a club per se more like us, the boys, Mar, Alice,’ Sirius explained, looking up at her, ‘Dumbledore wants us to carry on for some reason. I think we should.’
‘Me too,’ Daisy agreed.

Sirius didn’t know how it had happened. How he’d ended up here, sitting on the window ledge of his new bedroom, fag in hand - something that would drive his newly acquired family batty if they knew. That’s why he did it now, in the dark of night where they couldn’t see. It’s where he did a lot of things they couldn’t see. Crying over his newly orphaned status had been the first, tears he couldn’t help but spill though he was thankful to get out of that godforsaken house. Anger was the next though he suspected they knew about that, or at least the house elves did, given that the mirror he’d punched to smithereens until his hand was bloodied and bruised had restored itself by the following morning though he’d not bothered to clean it up. But the smoking they didn’t know about. And this, this little thing he and Jasmine had going. They definitely didn’t know about that.
He hadn’t intended to start anything with her. Of course they were friends, it was hard not to be given he was best friends with her twin James and living in her family's house, but it had never gone past that. Even though she was her brother’s polar opposite, the only traits they shared being looks [the same dark hair, of which hers was more well tamed, and the same stunning hazel eyes] he’d still seen her as an extension of him. And though there had never been an explicit restriction on their friendship going any further there was an unspoken honour code that allowed him to know she was off limits. A code which he had followed right until he couldn’t.
The first time he kissed her he hadn’t been thinking properly. He was tired, fed up, hurt and angry and she was there. Whilst Euphemia fussed over him and James tried relentlessly to cheer him up she did nothing but let him think. She let him talk, if he wanted to, she even let him smoke in front of her though he respected her enough to do it by a window or in the garden.
They’d been outside in the garden when it happened. Admittedly he’d been hiding out around the back of the shed where James couldn’t find him when she’d come strolling around the corner, looking completely unsurprised to find him there. Obviously she wasn’t fazed, after all, these hidey holes had been bequeathed to him by her. A lifetime of being James Potter’s twin could drive a girl to that.
She’d asked him if he was okay and when he lied and muttered ‘yeah’ she’d pretended to believe him instead of rephrasing it and needling him for more. They’d fallen quiet but instead of looking out at the vast lawns of the Potter’s mansion, admiring the neatly manicured hedges and ornate fountains that made up the décor he’d watched her. He’d known she was pretty, like all the Potters she had that air of wealth and attractiveness that would make you hate them if they weren’t so nice, but staring at her in that nook in the garden he’d seen how beautiful she was. How her creamy skin had turned a soft golden colour due the unusually hot summer they were having. How her dark locks had red undertones that made her hazel eyes seem warmer. How her lips plumped when she was thinking, providing extra security as they kept in whatever thought was on her mind before she was ready to say it.
By then her lips were all he could think of and before he could stop himself he leaned in and kissed her finding to his surprise she didn’t stop him, in fact she’d kissed him back. She’d kissed him back every time he’d needed a distraction until eventually she’d ended up in his bed, like she was now. Only now it wasn’t a distraction. Now he could think of nothing but her. Nothing but the next moment alone or how long they could manage without being pulled apart. And it wasn’t even the physical anymore. It was how she made him feel, how his day got better just being around her, how his heart hurt a little less these days, thudding in his chest at the sight of her.
It was hammering now as he watched her laid in her bed, sleeping peacefully. He didn’t know how long he’d been staring at her but as the ash from his cigarette finally broke away dusting the dark wood of the windowsill in grey speckles he realised it had been a while. He brushed it off, flicking the end of the cigarette through the open window before he closed it apparently too loudly as Jasmine disturbed, her eyes fluttering open.
‘Sorry,’ Sirius mumbled as he turned around and noticed he’d woken her.
‘It’s alright,’ she said, pushing herself up until she was sitting. Sirius moved towards his side of the bed but she reached out and grabbed him, pulling him down until he was sitting in front of her. He was sure he smelt of cigarettes but she didn’t care, leaning in to kiss him gently, causing his heart to thump harder.
‘Couldn’t sleep?’ she asked, taking his hands in hers as she fiddled with his fingers, missing the rings that were usually there for her to play with.
‘Yeah,’ he said. She often did this, whenever there was something on his mind she’d hang back allowing him to disclose it or ignore whatever it was until he was ready. Where James would push or try and get his mind off of it she’d let him navigate it himself with her by his side if he needed her. Only this she couldn’t help with. What had gotten him up in the middle of the night he couldn’t talk out with her or ask her opinion. Because it was her he was thinking of and not in a good way. It was less than two days until they went back to school for their final year. Two days until they were forced into the petri dish and under the microscope that was Hogwarts. Two days until every inch of this, whatever this was, was scrutinised. Until James found out and hated him. Until his friends' sympathies evaporated because out of all the girls in Hogwarts he couldn’t just leave her alone. It was a disaster waiting to happen and he cared about her too much to do that.
‘I’ve been thinking,’ he said, after a moment of staring at her slender fingers tracing lines along his knuckles.
‘About what?’ she said, still watching his hands until he said, ‘this…us.’’
‘What about it?’ she said, trying to keep her voice as even as possible though as she looked up and found stormy grey eyes watching her she knew whatever it was wasn’t good.
‘Well, I was just thinking…about going back to school,’ Sirius said, clearing his throat awkwardly, ‘and how it might be better if we knock this thing on the head.’
‘Oh,’ she said, her stomach dropping at the use of the word ‘thing’. Sirius didn’t allow time for her to recover from the blow and continued.
‘I mean it might get complicated once we’re back at school what with James and-’
‘James hasn’t noticed us two feet under his nose,’ Jasmine reasoned, trying to keep her voice steady. She knew there was no point in getting upset, that fussing and emotions only made him uncomfortable. It was why she never pressed him to speak about his family. In a way she supposed that she had no reason to be surprised given that this wouldn’t be the first time he’d run away from a feeling, she just hadn't seen herself as something bad enough he needed to run away. She hadn't felt as though this, whatever this was, was something you could just ‘knock on the head’.
‘Yeah but he might do, or someone else. And we said that was the last thing we wanted, remember? For everything to be awkward,’ Sirius reasoned.
‘Yeah at the start. I’m sure he’d get over it,’ she said. Of course they had agreed that but only at the beginning before everything felt real. The only problem was that this felt real too, the way her heart squoze in her chest making it hard to breathe. The way he refused to look her way, his gaze on her stalled fingers, no longer trailing against his soft pale skin, felt too real. Real enough to drop her voice to an uncertain, ‘unless you don’t want to.’
‘I just don’t think it’s a good idea Jas,’ Sirius mumbled, ‘I mean it’s not like I’m the relationship type is it. James knows that, you do too.’
‘Right,’ she said, though it felt a little like a child trying to convince their parents they hadn't eaten all the cake with crumbs around their mouth. How could he possibly feel he couldn’t be the ‘relationship type’ when everything they'd shared over the last two months had felt like the best, realest relationship she’d ever had. How could he not see the way he held her, the way he made her smile, the care he paid her and not think about a relationship.
‘It was fun though,’ Sirius said, his words awkward in his mouth though they rolled off his tongue in the most blasé manner.
‘Yeah, it was fun,’ Jasmine said, watching him closely until he finally looked up and met her gaze.
He could see the hurt in her face. The tears behind her eyes that she was no doubt not letting herself cry in an effort to stay strong on his behalf. Like she always was. She was everything he needed and yet he couldn’t make himself what she wanted. He was a coward, through and through, and so if he couldn't tell her the truth he’d have to give her a sliver of it at least.
‘You’re a good friend Jas. I don’t want to lose that,’ he said sadly. Jasmine didn't say anything for a moment, those plump lips no doubt sealing in whatever it was she wanted to say in order to protect him. He knew she should probably let him have it, whatever abuse she could hurl was justified. And yet she didn't, which only proved his point. She deserved someone who could love her the way she loved. Not the broken, messed up kid he was. And so he was surprised at just how truthful her words sounded considering they were about someone like him.
‘I don’t want to lose you either.’

Oh my
don't count on it
Tumblr media
summary: buck can't sleep. bucky helps him out.
word count: 2675
warnings: period typical homophobia and homophobic attitudes, handjobs, brief objectification of women, brief talks of war, guys being dudes
notes: i began writing this before i watched mota yesterday so forgive me if anything seems out of character. this came to me in a dream at three am and i've been thinking about it since. this is also inspired by @precious-little-scoundrel so thank you for your lovely blog marina. i hope everyone enjoys!
Tumblr media
his entire body radiated with a dull ache deep in his joints. as soon as his back hit the bed, his eyes drooped as if he’d fall asleep right then and there. and yet, he laid there, staring at the dull gray ceiling.
he always did this. he yearned to sleep, but as soon as the time to lay down came, he couldn't fall into a sound slumber. too many thoughts racing in his head, too much aching in his body– too much noise all around him. the hum of the rickety air conditioning, the faint mutters and laughs of his bunkmates as they brushed their teeth and got dressed for bed, his own breathing reverberating in his ears. it all was so mundane, but too overwhelming.
he shut his eyes, hoping sleep would just come to him. he tried to ignore it all– the sounds, the thoughts…but nothing. he was still awake.
the bed dipped next to him, and he didn’t even have to open his eyes to see who it was.
“finally outta the shower?” buck asked, hands tucked behind his head as he waited for a response. “you take forever in there. you're like a woman.”
“yeah yeah,” bucky dismissed, shoving buck playfully as he set his belongings down. “and you didn’t shower long at all. dunno how ya got anything clean in that time.”
“i’m very clean.” gale huffed, cracking one eye open. “i just don’t like showering with other people. i like my alone time.”
“uh huh. you just wanna be able to rub one out in there.”
gale sat up and shoved him, laughing in surprise at his friend's brazen words. it was always like this. bucky, being brazen and outgoing, all while buck watched from the sidelines. he liked it that way. he always felt a weird joy when bucky would tell random stories of reckless things he did in the past, or when he insisted on singing after a few drinks at the bar. he’d always say that he was a prude when he resisted his drunken tugging of his arm, trying to urge him on stage with him. buck never took it personally though– mainly because bucky was right. compared to most of the men he’d been around he was prude. he didn’t gamble, drink– hell, he didn't even have one night stands. many of the guys got drunk and went home with the first broad they saw, but buck didn’t feel anything towards the women who would brazenly grip at his arms and called him a stud. sure, he’s made out with a few of them– and almost made a mess of his uniform– but he never took them back to base. he didn't want to lose his purity like that. sure, he’d done plenty of heavy petting and dry humping, but he’s never went all the way with a girl before. it just didn't happen.
he got teased about it, sure, but he stuck by his guns. he didn't see the big deal in rushing to stick your cock into some random woman and then brag about it the next day. it all seemed very shallow to him. he was always told that sex is special– between two people with a strong, loving bond. and he held that close to his heart. he actually was planning to save himself for marriage– but when you're a hormonal teen…its a little hard to fight those primal feelings.
“oh please, i haven't done that since i got here.” buck said earnestly, laying back down and stretching out. “honestly, i haven't done that in almost a year.”
bucky laughed. “no way. i always joked about you bein’ a prude, y’know, but this is a little far.” he cracked. “where ya too busy? or are you actually that green?”
“i’m not green,” buck grumbled, sitting up and rubbing at his eyes. “i jus’-- goddamn, i dunno. i wanna save myself, y’know. i try not to do it too often.”
“good god man, you didn't even go for it before you were here? you’re crazy.” egan snorted. “now you’re stuck ‘round all these guys.”
buck just shrugged, laying back down and sighing heavily. “oh well. what can ya do?”
it was quiet, for a moment. buck could feel that bucky was was there, but he was silent– like he was contemplating. buck opened one eye and gazed at him, confused at the way his lips were twitching.
“you…you really aren’t gonna…indulge in any ladies out here?” bucky said, softly, like he was ashamed of asking. “you’re gonna lose it, man. it’s only been a week and i already feel all pent up.”
buck felt his face heat up slightly at the implication that his friend was horny. he bit his lip, dragging his eyes away from his black-haired friend as he let those words soak in. “really?”
“yeah. i– it’s been a while for me too, actually. i didn't really think about how it’d only be us guys out here. shoulda got something before i came out here.”
despite buck’s stance on remaining celibate until his marriage, he strangely understood the other man. even though he hardly engaged in such things, he felt the tension in every room he walked in. everyone seemed taut, like a bowstring– waiting to snap. whenever they’d spar, workout, or shower, the air would be thick enough to cut with a knife. it was an unspoken thing– but everyone felt it. no one wanted to talk about it, because…well, what would that make them? they don't allow fairies in the force, that’s for sure. something so scandalous couldn't even be thought about, unless you wanted a good beat down by every other troop in sight.
“i dunno. i think the last time i did it left me satisfied for a while,” he lied, not wanting to admit that he had the same fire simmering, albeit dimly, in his belly. he never felt like this, so what the hell was his deal?
“bullshit,” bucky swore. “no way your fist leaves you satisfied for years to come. you need a woman, buck. one that’ll rock your world.”
“you know i’m savin’ myself.” buck hummed. “besides, hookin’ up with some random woman doesn't sound appealing.”
“you’re wrong, man.” bucky sighed, laying down next to buck and resting his head on his hands. “it’s magical. raw. primal. makes you feel like a real man.” he grunted, inhaling deeply. “hooked up with this one chick– god, she was gorgeous. eager to go down on me– and she gripped ‘round me so damn tight i thought she cut off my circulation. kept bouncin’ on me and talking about how big i was. goddamn.”
buck’s cheeks flushed at the words leaving his friends mouth. the way he spoke about the woman like she was a pastime or a hobby and not a person was surprising. he could see it, though, clear in his minds eye– a young lady, moaning and panting, bouncing eagerly on bucky’s thick cock, bucky panting and calling her a good girl–
he paused. why was he thinking about bucky so much? and why did it make his face flush even more?
“issat right,” buck mumbled, trying to calm the butterflies in his stomach from his lewd imagination.
“uh huh. god– i dream about her all the damn time. what i’d give to be buried in her now.”
silence again. only this time, it felt more tense than the last. the vision that buck had– bucky’s cock, his breathless voice, his flushed face. it made him all hot, like no other girl had before. it scared him.
“you ever been with a girl? obviously not all the way– but at all?”
“of course i have.” buck said defensively. “i– i just…it was high school, maybe. real nice girl, real pretty. she came over to study, and we ended up making out. i was still kinda new to the whole….sex thing, so i told her no when she tried to go all the way. we did end up uh…. rubbin’ on each other though. felt nice.”
“and this was high school?” bucky asked. “and you haven’t been with a girl since?”
buck shook his head. bucky stared at him for a moment, something unreadable flashing in his eyes as he gazed at the blonde. “damn. no wonder you're so damn tense all the time.”
“i’m not tense.”
“you are. you’re always quiet– thinkin’. you never let loose. i bet if you got a handy you’d be as rowdy as the rest of us.”
“quit bein’ dirty.” buck tsked, smacking bucky’s chest lightly. “i don’t need a handy. i need some goddamn sleep.”
“i’m tellin’ ya man. you need to get laid.”
“i’ll smack ya if you say somethin’ pervy again.” buck promised, making bucky snicker softly.
it was quiet again. buck closed his eyes, but he felt as restless as earlier. moreso, even. he kept thinking about bucky’s last hookup, the way he described her, how tight she was. was she really tight? or was bucky just that big, like the girl said?
and there his mind went again. thinking about bucky. that wasn't normal. he needed to stop thinking about bucky and think about girls. like the girl he frotted with in his childhood bed- whatever her name was. the way she grabbed onto him, panted into his neck, shivering and shaking something awful as she came undone all over his slacks. he remembered being shocked at the gush, his cock still unbelievably hard down his thigh after two orgasms. he remembered how bad it hurt, being hard for so long. he wondered if being in a girl was better. he wondered if bucky’s cock stayed hard after he came inside that girl. no– stop. don’t think about the man right next to you. why did he keep–
“you’re breathin’ funny.” bucky observed.
“no i’m not.” buck argued, flustered at how his friend picked up on his heavier breathing. he prayed that he didn't look down and see his dick tenting in his sweats.
he must've. no. he did. his eyes trailed down the lean length of buck’s torso, landing on the large bulge under the fabric of his sweats.
“see what i mean?” bucky breathed, his voice lower in tone than normal. “you're so tense, buck,” he muttered, his hand moving from behind his head. “always so damn tense.”
buck swallowed hard as he felt bucky’s hand rest on his thigh, slowly inching upwards towards his aching cock. his breath stuttered, his face red-hot– but he didn't make a move to stop him. not at all.
bucky’s hand slid into his loose sweats, past the blonde curls, and gently grasped at his cock. buck inhaled sharply, his hand moving to grab bucky’s wrist in a moment of panic. bucky halted, looking up at buck tentatively.
oh, god.
“don't think,” bucky muttered, giving buck a soft squeeze. “jus’ lemme help, yeah? lemme get rid of that tension.”
buck let go slowly, his adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed hard. bucky’s hand gave him a curious squeeze, making buck grunt and rock his hips up into his grasp. slowly, hesitantly, bucky started to move his hand up and down his throbbing shaft.
“oh, god,” buck swore, his face flushed dark red as he felt his stomach clenching with each milking tug of bucky’s hand. he felt himself, dripping with precum all over his friends hand like a girl. he hardly began touching him, and he was already….
“close,” buck warned, his voice breathy and embarrassed as he started to pant softly. “oh, jesus–”
“no,” bucky grunted, pulling his hand away abruptly, much to buck’s dismay. before the blonde could even complain, bucky was straddling him and staring holes into his pretty blue eyes. “wanna see you.”
buck swore his face was radiating light at this point, and bucky’s gaze wasn't helping one bit. it was so hot and intensely desirous that buck thought he was going to get eaten alive.
bucky grasped the blonde’s cock again, giving it small, rhythmic squeezes as he stared into buck’s eyes, taking in how they were welling up with tears– and how his flushed face was beading with sweat. it was so different, so absolutely wildy hot that buck, ever stoic, was falling apart below him.
buck had never had someone look at him so hotly before– not even that girl back then. it was making him nervous, but also hot and needy. the thought that his friend wanted him carnally set a fire in his stomach and his heart.
he began pumping him slowly, twisting his wrist and squeezing, all with an expertise that shocked him a little. he could still hear the buzzing of the ac and the quiet conversations of the other troops as his mouth fell open, head falling into the plush pillows behind him.
bucky’s breathing was growing heavier. he could feel the other man’s heat as he used his thumb to swipe at his leaking slit, his breath catching as buck gasped beneath him. the blonde swore he felt a certain hardness poking at his thigh, but he didn't care at all right now. he needed to cum. he needed bucky to make him cum.
“say my name.” bucky demanded, his face flushed as he began jerking buck’s cock faster. “need to hear ya say my name when you cum.”
“bucky–”
“nah. louder.” he demanded, his own breath speeding up and becoming ragged as he stroked buck faster. “scream it. yell it. make sure all our boys know.”
“fuck–” buck whimpered, his cool, stoic demeanor completely gone as he bucked his hips up into his friends fist, moaning like a cheap whore. “b-bucky!”
“that’s it. fuck– no one can make you feel like this–” he panted, speeding up his ministrations. “can they, buck? i’m the only one. don’t– ngh- ever let me catch ya with anyone else. i’ll kill ‘em.”
“bucky,” buck whimpered, his stomach clenching one final time as his orgasm washed over him, a fire like he hadn't experienced in forever. his cock shot thickly over the front of bucky’s shirt, making the other man groan and bite his lip as his friend came apart. the way bucky was straddling him, stroking him through his orgasm, the faint sounds of his friends voices through the thin wall– oh, fuck.
he dissolved into pathetic little tremors and whines as he came down, his cock bubbling weakly at the tip. bucky was panting hard, his face red and eyes hungry as he gazed at the blonde. suddenly, buck was sure that there was a hardness prodding at him.
silence.
“you–” buck panted, reaching out to grasp bucky’s erection, only to be stopped. “wha–”
“don’t worry about me.” he mumbled. “fuck, everyone’s gonna be here soon. jus’--” he stuttered, clambering off of buck awkwardly, tucking him back into his sweats. “get some sleep, buck.”
buck was too tired to try and chase after him as he scrambled away. his body felt heavy as he closed his eyes, finally succumbing to sleep.
when he awoke, he went straight to the breakfast hall. he felt like last night was some fever dream he had cooked up in his fucked up mind.
he sat at a table near the window, graciously taking the coffee he was given. only a few minutes later, the chair in front of him had been filled by his friend.
it was dead silent. then, bucky finally spoke, his voice calm and steadier than buck expected.
“sleep good last night?”
buck’s face flushed slightly, but he nodded, his eyes not leaving his plate.
“good.” bucky hummed, leaning back in his chair. “got a mission. you right and ready to fly?”
“you know it.”
“that’s my boy.” bucky smiled, and buck hated that he got butterflies in his stomach from it. “i’ll see ya in the air. don’t fall asleep in the seat, y’hear me?”
buck smiled, taking a sip from his bittersweet coffee. “don’t count on it.”

The air was electric, exhilarating the crowd of sweaty bodies crammed into the concert hall as they eagerly cheered and clapped in appreciation for their entertainers of the night. Daisy could barely believe she’d been able to see her favourite band, Queen, live in the flesh let alone be smiled at by the Freddie Mercury who’d clocked her and Sirius singing along very enthusiastically to Killer Queen. And yet that hadn’t even been her favourite point, no, her favourite moment was feeling Sirius’ arms around her, singing ‘You’re My Best Friend,’ down her ear not knowing just how much she felt those words. It was a moment she’d cherish forever and one she wouldn’t trade for anything even if it did come with the tax of having to fight their way through a crowd fifteen thousand deep and get half way across London to get home.
Given that they were still both underage neither were able to apparate and so they’d floo’d to Sirius’ flat from the Potters as it wasn’t so far away from the venue. They were supposed to be headed back the same way but Daisy had no sooner stepped foot over the threshold before Sirius was on her, his lips attacking hers as he steered her towards the couch. She fell onto it with a thump, breathless from his frenzied attack, and watched as he clambered on shirking off his jacket before he returned to kissing her. Daisy melted into him, feeling heady as his hand danced under her dress, caressing along her skin. She could feel herself getting excited but they didn’t have time to spare. Euphemia would no doubt be worried if they didn’t get home soon and she didn’t fancy her sending someone to find them. So reluctantly she mumbled his name.
‘Mmm?’ he mumbled against her lips, not bothering to stop kissing her even though she turned her head to the side to continue speaking. Instead he merely carried on moving his lips down her jaw and neck, making her heart pulse in response.
‘It’s late,’ she mumbled.
‘So?’ he murmured against her skin.
‘They’ll be expecting us back,’ she said glumly. Sirius pulled back to look at her, a mischievous grin on his lips as he said, ‘nah they won’t. We’re staying here tonight.’
‘How? We have no stuff and they think we’re coming home,’ she said, pushing herself up onto her elbows. Sirius moved to allow her, sitting back on the couch and pulling her onto his lap as he explained, ‘I squared it with Euphemia this morning and I put the stuff we need in your bag.’
‘How the hell did you manage that?’ Daisy gawked.
‘You should know there’s a lot I can pull off by now. Anyway, should I be offended that you don’t want to stay with me?’ Sirius asked, quirking an eyebrow. Daisy smacked his chest playfully, ‘don’t be daft you know I do but how the hell did you clear that with Euphemia. I mean she makes us stay in separate rooms for god’s sake.’
‘And because we’re so good at obeying her rules,’ Sirius joked, making her giggle as she recalled all the nights they’d started a floor away from one another only to end up in the same bed come the morning, ‘she felt sorry for us. Mainly because I played to her sympathies and explained that thanks to her son we barely get any time alone.’
‘Oh I bet she didn’t stand a chance,’ Daisy giggled.
‘She was very sympathetic to the cause,’ Sirius grinned.
‘Did you give her your best puppy dog eyes?’ Daisy teased though she knew even without them it wouldn’t have taken him long to talk her around.
‘Didn’t need to. I merely pointed out that with us out of the house she’d have the dear old lad and Lily alone. And with the boys coming tomorrow too it’d be her last chance to have them all to herself,’ Sirius said smugly.
It was a good tactic. Ever since they’d landed at the Potter’s Euphemia had fawned over them day in and day out as expected. But what had taken everyone by surprise however was just how much Euphemia had taken to Lily, much to James’ chagrin. Of course he liked that his mother and girlfriend got along but he’d started to feel put out that he wasn’t the sole person responsible in adoring everything her sister did from the moment she woke up to the moment she went to bed. And without Lily to follow around he’d resorted to doing whatever Sirius and Daisy were doing which often ended up to be not what they wanted to be doing now they had a third wheel. Daisy had to admire his cunning even though she knew it would mean an earful from Lily who, of course loved Euphemia, but was still struggling to find five minutes to herself even in a house as big as theirs.
‘Very crafty,’ she said, wrapping her arms around his neck as his lips met hers in a soft kiss.
‘That’s me,’ he mumbled.
‘With a one-track mind it seems,’ she giggled, grinding on the taught material of his pants.
‘Definitely,’ he growled and before she could respond he’d flipped her onto the couch.
✵✵✵
Grubby, that was the only word that sprung to mind as Daisy brushed her teeth in the bathroom of Sirius’ flat. Of course she wasn’t surprised that the bathroom could do with a good clean considering it had been left empty for months but as she rinsed off her toothbrush and spat into the sink she was just thankful that they’d only be staying here the night. And that Sirius had had the forethought to load up her enchanted bag with everything they might need seeing as she didn’t feel like dipping under the covers sans pyjamas after seeing the state of the toilet.
When she re-emerged in the bedroom Sirius was already in bed, dressed in just a t-shirt and his underwear, sitting reading a book which he subsequently placed on the bedside table once she appeared. Her heart thudded at the sight of him forcing any ideas of subpar cleanliness from her head with each thump as she rushed over to the bed and climbed on, cuddling into his side as he lay down and wrapped his arms around her. They lay there for a moment, watching each other in quiet adoration, listening to the sounds of each other breathing and the hum of traffic from far below muted by the windows and thick purple curtains.
After a moment she leaned in and brushed her lips against his, groaning as he moved her in closer to deepen it. She knew they should probably go to sleep, that it was late and if they overslept there’d no doubt be hell to pay when they eventually waltzed into the Potter’s mansion, but she couldn’t stop herself. She just had to kiss him so that she could add this moment to a dozen other memories of the day, each of them just as special as the rest. When she broke away from him however he was watching her as if there was not a thought in his mind as he said, ‘move in with me.’
‘What?’ Daisy asked, unsure that she’d heard him correctly. Sirius too paused as if he hadn’t heard his own words. As wide green eyes watched him, waiting for an explanation, he felt his mind spin. It was a question he’d been thinking about for a while, ever since they’d landed back at the Potters and found the house slightly chaotic with its now six inhabitants. Still, it was a big thing to ask as evidenced by the shock on her pretty face but he didn’t back down. If there was a time to do it was now, when it was just the two of them, happy and content.
‘I mean it,’ he said firmly, ‘move in with me.’
‘Like move in here?’ she asked, pulling back so that she could sit up as she tried to digest what he was asking of her. Sirius followed tentatively, trying to hide his disappointment at the loss of contact.
‘Yeah, I mean not right now but like next year, after school has finished,’ he reasoned, trying to establish whether his sentiments were as ridiculous as her expression was making him feel they were. Except her expression wasn’t reassuring and without meaning to he mumbled glumly, ‘you don’t want to.’
‘I hadn’t really thought about it,’ she admitted. She hadn’t thought about anything really. Given everything that had happened at the end of term she’d been focused on getting to seventh year unscathed let alone what they were going to do afterwards or what their living arrangements would be. Of course Sirius had thought about it. He always seemed to be one step ahead, almost better at planning than Lily which took some doing. With that thought she found herself asking, ‘when did you?’
‘Well I didn’t not really but I always figured I wouldn’t be able to stay with the Potters forever-‘
‘Euphemia would disagree I’m sure,’ Daisy joked, feeling a touch less tense when he smirked.
‘Yeah I know but I have this place so it makes sense to use it, right?’ Sirius asked.
‘True,’ Daisy said, ‘I guess I just hadn’t thought about it.’
‘It’s alright if you don’t want to,’ he said. Daisy sighed.
‘It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s just, oh, I don’t know, I guess I haven’t thought about any of it. I mean it makes sense for you to move in here after school but we still have the house which me and Lil haven’t even figured out yet,’ Daisy said.
‘Shit, yeah, I hadn’t thought about that,’ Sirius said, the sting of her not agreeing outright diminishing now that idea was in the mix.
‘Have you told James yet?’ she asked.
‘That I want to move in with you?’ Sirius asked as his brow furrowed. It was a question that had taken him off guard and for a moment he thought she may have been deflecting to spare his feelings over her reluctance until she replied, ‘I don’t know why but I guess I always saw the pair of you moving in together after school.’
‘Funnily enough I don’t like James in that way,’ he quipped, earning a thump on the arm and a roll of the eyes as she said, ‘you know what I mean! The pair of you are going to be doing the auror’s course together. You live together now it’s not a stretch.’
‘We might have talked about it at one point but is it such a stretch to think I might want to live with my girlfriend?’ Sirius reasoned. Daisy sighed.
‘No, I guess I just never saw myself settling down right out of Hogwarts. Like marriage and kids and all that,’ Daisy said, recalling her surprise at Lily not being averse to a picture-perfect traditional family life straight out of school instead of a career. Daisy wasn’t even career driven and the idea of stepping out of school robes into a wedding dress had baffled her even if Sirius was the one for her, they had the rest of their lives together so why would they rush it.
‘Well it’s a good job I didn’t ask for all that then isn’t it,’ Sirius said.
‘No but that’s what happens isn’t it? Once you live together that all follows,’ Daisy said.
‘Probably but it doesn’t have to. Not right away. We’re a family Dais,’ Sirius sighed as he placed his hand on her cheek, caressing his thumb against her soft skin. He could see her rationale but surely she knew that they didn’t have to do all that just off the back of one decision. Did he love her? With everything in him. Did he want to marry her? One day. But did that mean he needed her to do it right that second? Not at all.
‘I know that,’ she mumbled.
‘So you know that whether we live together or not we’re not going to stop being a family,’ he reasoned, ‘wherever we are. We don’t have to rush into anything.’
‘Can I sleep on it?’ she asked, gnawing on her lip.
‘Of course,’ Sirius said, pressing a kiss to her forehead before he slipped back down onto the bed. Daisy watched apprehensively for a moment; the easy-going ambience they’d been basking in now replaced by an uneasy tension as she settled down beside him. Sirius moved to turn off the light, plunging the room into darkness. Now that she couldn’t see him it was slightly less awkward and she felt a tad better as she cuddled into his side and found he allowed her to, wrapping his arms around her shoulders as he placed a kiss on the top of her head.
‘You know I love you right?’ she asked after a moment.
‘Of course I do,’ Sirius whispered.
‘Because I don’t want you to think that I don’t just because I didn’t agree right away,’ she whispered.
‘Daisy if you think you’re getting rid of me that easily you’ve got another thing coming,’ he quipped.
‘Yeah, never getting rid of you, am I?’ she smiled.
‘Not bloody likely,’ he agreed, ‘night Dais.’
‘Night Pads.’
✵✵✵
When Sirius awoke the following morning he was alone in the bed. He lay there listening for sounds of Daisy in the nearby bathroom but they didn’t come so after rubbing the sleep from his eyes he climbed out of bed with a yawn and went to investigate. As he pulled the French doors open he could hear her in the kitchen, the beat of the radio wafting through the flat along with the smell of bacon. When he got to the kitchen he found her standing by the cooker, nudging a couple pieces of bacon around in the pan causing them to sizzle and spit in protest. He moved towards her, wrapping his arms around her as he rested his chin on her shoulder to watch what she was doing.
‘Morning,’ she said, using her free hand to pat his arm in recognition he was there before she carried on cooking.
‘Morning,’ he yawned, ‘what are you doing?’
‘What does it look like,’ she giggled, ‘I’m making us some breakfast.’
‘How?’ he asked, it wasn’t like there would be any usable food in the cupboards since they’d all been cleared out.
‘Well you get your frying pan and your food and-’
‘Very funny,’ he said, poking her in the side and making her squirm.
‘Yeah well some of us didn’t grow up with house elves,’ she giggled, ‘I bet you’ve never even boiled an egg.’
‘Don’t need to, I've got you to do it for me,’ he chuckled, kissing her cheek as she rolled her eyes, ‘but I meant where did you get the stuff?’
‘I nipped the shop this morning,’ she said, moving to grab the toast that had just popped up from the toaster. As he let her go he realised she was now fully dressed, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt adorning her figure rather than the pyjamas he’d last seen her in. He was still watching her when she turned around, hot pieces of toast singing her fingertips as she pushed him out of the way. Sensing he was more of a hindrance standing there he took a seat at the small kitchen table and said, ‘you didn’t need to do that. We could’ve gone out.’
‘I didn’t mind,’ she said, waving him off before she returned to making him a plate. He watched her flit about the kitchen, eventually coming to sit beside him as she placed a plate in front of him.
‘Thanks,’ he smiled.
‘No problem,’ Daisy said.
Without hesitation he dove in, not realising just how hungry he had become until the food was staring him in the face. Daisy however didn’t follow suit. She pushed her fork around her plate to seem as though she was but she had yet to take a bite because she was too busy watching him. She had done the same when she’d woken up this morning as her mind whirred about the night before and what he had asked of her. It wasn’t exactly a simple thing to say yes to. After all she had Lily and their house to think of. Not to mention she was sure James would be under the impression the pair of them would be taking the next steps of their lives together. But watching him she realised that he was right and that this, sitting in this tiny kitchen eating breakfast or waking up in the same bed together, was what she wanted. And he was right that didn’t mean that all the other stuff had to follow right away. Sirius had been too busy mopping up the yolk of his egg with a piece of toast but when he noticed she hadn’t moved he looked up and found her watching him.
‘What?’ he asked, instinctively moving his hand to his face in case there might be something around his mouth from the frenzied way he’d attacked his morning meal.
‘Okay,’ Daisy said simply.
‘Okay?’ he asked.
‘Okay I’ll move in with you,’ she said.
‘Really?’ he asked excitedly.
‘Yeah, I mean we’ll have to talk to James and Lil about it and I have a feeling James will be heartbroken at the idea,’ Daisy giggled, placing her hand on the back of his. Sirius smirked, ‘he’ll survive.’
‘Good because I want to,’ she said firmly.
‘Daisy that’s brilliant,’ he said leaning in to kiss her.
When he pulled back he stayed closer, his hand ghosting up her neck as he said, ‘now will you marry me?’
‘Not funny,’ Daisy said, pushing him away as he laughed uproariously at the look on her face. Daisy ignored him and attempted to tuck into her eggs but his teasing appeared to have gotten hold of him which forced her to say, ‘I can still change my mind you know!’
‘Not a chance,’ Sirius smiled.
✵✵✵
By the time they got back to the Potter’s Remus and Peter had arrived for the rest of the summer and so the majority of the day was spent lounging around and catching up on each other’s holidays as well as the concert. It was a day spent indoors which is probably why Euphemia insisted they eat their dinner out in the garden, to make the most of the light summer’s night. It was warm outside but there was a slight breeze that made it just comfortable enough to be sat out there which was fortunate as they spent a long time outside, grazing at the copious amounts of food Euphemia had provided, whilst catching her and Fleamont up on what they had missed. Yet as the sky started to get darker with pinks and purples spanning across it signaling night was coming Euphemia and Fleamont announced they’d be heading back into the house.
The group bid them goodbye and they had no sooner gone back in through the back door before James said, ‘so anyone fancy a game of quidditch?’
‘We’ve just eaten,’ Lily protested.
‘So?’ James said.
‘Yeah Lil can’t waste a moment I mean the boys have been here all of ten seconds,’ Daisy teased.
‘Exactly we’ve waited long enough don’t you think,’ James said, ‘besides you girls can always join if you want.’
‘No thanks,’ Daisy said.
‘Suit yourself. Lil?’ James asked, receiving a shake of the head, ‘boys?’
‘Go on then,’ Sirius said, wiping his hands on a napkin as he stood up.
‘Yeah me too,’ Peter said.
‘Rem?’ Sirius asked, looking at Remus who looked between three expectant faces and then sighed.
‘Go on then,’ Remus grumbled, climbing out of his seat.
‘Sure we can't tempt you?’ James said as he climbed out of his seat. Lily shook her head once more, ‘suit yourselves. We won’t be long.’
‘Be careful,’ Lily said as he pressed a kiss to her temple before following the boys down towards the field.
Daisy watched as they trudged down the long, manicured lawn which descended into wilder grass before eventually being submerged by trees leaving them out of view. As they disappeared from sight four brooms zoomed from the house in the direction they’d gone. Daisy watched as the brooms disappeared into the treeline, wondering how the boys could be bothered to fly about after a full meal, though as she looked back she found her sister wasn’t thinking the same and instead Lily was watching her, a smile on her face, ‘so go on.’
‘What?’ Daisy asked self-consciously.
‘How was last night? More to the point, how did you convince Euphemia to let the pair of you out in the real world alone,’ Lily pressed.
‘I don’t know. That was all Sirius,’ Daisy mused, ‘but I’m glad because we had a good night and then we didn’t need to rush back or anything.’
‘Yeah I’ll bet it was better than mine,’ Lily grumbled.
‘That bad?’ Daisy winced.
‘Euphemia insisted we have a formal dinner,’ Lily explained, ‘which meant grilling every inch of our relationship practically from first year to yesterday.’
‘Ouch,’ Daisy muttered.
‘Yeah all whilst you and Pads were doing god knows what,’ Lily said, raising an eyebrow at Daisy who could feel pink tinge her cheeks even through her golden complexion. Though as she spoke she realised this would be a good time to bring up what Sirius had asked of her, more to the point it would help breaking the news to James a little easier.
‘Well if it makes you feel any better next summer you can always stay at our place,’ Daisy said, watching her sister closely as she sipped her drink. She could see the words landing, Lily not comprehending the joke as she said, ‘our place?’
‘Yeah,’ Daisy said, ‘Sirius asked me to move into the flat with him once we finish school and I said yes.’
‘Wow, that’s,’ Lily started, trailing off as the news finally registered which admittedly didn’t fill her sister with much hope though fortunately she didn’t shout or scold her as expected but merely asked, ‘and that’s what you want?’
‘I think so,’ Daisy said, ‘no, I do. I really do.’
‘That’s good,’ Lily said, though her tone lacked conviction.
‘And it’s not like it’s right now. I mean we’ve got another year of school before we even have to think about it. And in a way it’s good it’s not like I’ll be out in the big bad world on my own,’ Daisy reasoned. Lily nodded half-heartedly.
She could see Daisy’s point. She and Sirius had been dating just as long as her and James and it was the logical next step in both relationships. It just felt very final. They’d always been together, one entity. Even when they’d strived for individuality the other had always been there in some way. Even Daisy living in the boys dormitory for a good half of the year hadn’t stopped them from being apart because they’d still been under the same roof. Now they were going to be apart, for the first time ever. Their own people. With their own lives. It was a big change.
‘Are you mad?’ Daisy asked after a moment of quiet.
‘No,’ Lily said earnestly, ‘just surprised.’
‘Me too to be honest,’ Daisy admitted.
‘I just can’t believe he’s been thinking of it. I mean I haven’t even thought about what we’re gonna do after school,’ Lily said.
‘I know and he was me thinking Tuney was a loon for settling down so young,’ Daisy giggled.
‘My, my Daisy who said anything about settling down,’ Lily smirked.
‘Oh you know what I mean,’ Daisy said, rolling her eyes.
‘Mmmhmm,’ Lily teased. The pair fell quiet for a moment as Daisy took another sip. It was still quite warm out but as the breeze blew through the garden it made goosebumps appear on Daisy’s tanned skin. She wondered how they were still playing given that the breeze would no doubt be a lot colder twenty feet in the air though the shouts and jeers from just beyond the tree line were still audible.
Lily however wasn’t paying attention to what the boys were doing; she was too busy watching her little sister who had all of a sudden become ready to leave her side. She knew she wasn’t really leaving her rather that this was the natural progression of things but with all that had been going on and the prospect of the next few years being a literal war she couldn’t help but want to hold her close. That was probably why she had fended off thinking about what they would do after school. It had been why she had hated Euphemia’s grilling last night as she seemed intent on knowing where they were headed together when that still felt up in the air these days. Still if she was going to pick anyone for her sister it’d be Sirius. In fact being forced to discuss her and James courtship had made her realise just how lucky the pair of them were to become friends with the boys, how much emptier their lives would’ve been if Daisy hadn’t been so intent on bringing them down and almost getting herself killed.
‘I think they’d like him, you know,’ Lily said, catching her sister’s attention as her brow furrowed in confusion, ‘mum and dad. I think they’d like that you’re happy.’
‘Yeah I think they would,’ Daisy said, surprised to find that her heart didn’t hurt at the idea of her parents but rather twinged with wistfulness that they’d had to miss out on their lives as they were now, ‘James too.’
‘I think it’d take dad a minute to come around,’ Lily giggled.
‘Well I dare say he’d like him more than he likes Vernon. At least James wouldn’t bore him about drills,’ Daisy reasoned.
‘No but I’m sure he could bend his ear about Puddlemore United even though dad’s never watched a game,’ Lily giggled.
‘At least there’d be no interrogation from him,’ Daisy reasoned.
‘Yeah only because Tuney covered everything they could possibly ask,’ Lily said rolling her eyes as she recounted the endless slew of questions their older sister had unleashed on not only James but Sirius too the day that they’d gone back to the house in order to sort some things out given that they wouldn’t be spending the summer there.
‘Yeah well who cares what she thinks it’s not like she’s the one who has to go out with them,’ Daisy said.
‘True,’ Lily agreed.
At that moment Bonney and a house elf the pair hadn’t seen before appeared, looking apprehensive when they saw the girls sitting there though she managed to work up her nerve quickly and said, ‘I’m sorry Misses. Mistress has asked that we tidy everything away. Is that okay?’
‘Of course,’ Lily said, ‘do you need help?’
‘Oh no Miss we’ll be just fine. Thank you though,’ she squeaked as she started to load up plates and cutlery into a neat stack. Daisy watched her for a second before she stood up and said, ‘c’mon let’s go up to the patio.’
‘Yeah okay,’ Lily said, smiling at Bonney as she followed Daisy towards the stone steps to the second storey patio. It was colder up here, Daisy’s theory about the breeze being icier the higher up you were proved correct, but there was a blanket left on the outdoor furniture that the two cosied up under, watching the tree line as tiny figures dipped in and out of view against a purple-pink backdrop.
‘Lil?’ Daisy asked after a moment of watching the boys.
‘Yeah?’ Lily asked.
‘What do you think James will say?’ she asked, turning to look at her sister who shifted to face her.
‘About you and Sirius moving in?’ Lily asked, Daisy nodded, ‘oh I think he’ll be bereft.’
‘I thought so too,’ Daisy sighed.
‘Nah he’ll be fine. I know they’d spoken about it but it makes sense for you two to move in together,’ Lily said.
‘Maybe you can soothe the blow by asking him to move in with you?’ Daisy said, raising an eyebrow.
‘Doubt it. I’m sometimes sure he loves Pads more than he loves me,’ Lily giggled, ‘but it looks like we won't have much of a choice at this rate with the pair of you abandoning us and all.’
‘Oh I’m sure you two could find somewhere nearby,’ Daisy said, ‘maybe you could lead with that when you break the news?’
‘Oh it’s all on me is it?’ Lily said, rolling her eyes.
‘Definitely,’ Daisy giggled.

PART ONE // PART TWO // PART THREE
Though James had assured Sabrina not to worry about Sirius he couldn’t help but fret as time drew on without an appearance from his best mate. He didn’t return to the dormitory until well after curfew and when he did he rushed in, climbing into his bed without a word or chance for James to bob his head out of the curtains to check on him.
Not that he knew what he was going to say. So far his and Sabrina’s little ploy had not garnered the attention either of them wanted but now it was as if they were all playing a game of chicken, the train speeding towards them until one of them gave up the ghost and jumped out the way. That was why James made a resolution, if neither Sirius nor Lily had admitted anything by the end of the week he and Sabrina would have to knock this whole debacle on the head. Not that he got a chance to lay this decision on her though as he had to spend the following morning preparing for the Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw match. As he walked into the great hall he was met with a sea of red and gold from banners and flags to each house member's jumpers and scarves.  Even Sabrina had opted to adorn her house colours, though he doubted she’d be watching most of the game.
She offered him a smile as he sat down, and a cheery ‘good luck’ though she looked about as happy as he felt, the worry from last night still on his mind. Sirius didn’t appear until the end of breakfast, only scarfing down a piece of toast before he rose, already in his quidditch uniform, and headed to the door forcing James to finish up quickly so that they could walk down together. And despite neither of them speaking, other than to Peter who had hurried along to head down to the pitch with them though he’d be in the spectator stands, they managed to cinch a win. It was a tough game, with the Ravenclaw beaters intent on scuppering James solely though that was no surprise given how spectacularly he’d played. And he wasn’t too proud to admit that without his best friend he might not have been on such good form because even though he was barely speaking to him Sirius was still there blocking every player and bludger that came for his best pal.
Sabrina had watched the entire thing, nerves bubbling in her stomach as she watched the boys fly about like ants far above them. She’d fretted all night about Sirius, about the look on his face when he’d seen her kissing James. It looked wounded.
She hadn’t been sure about the reciprocation of his feelings before which was why she’d thought simply baiting him would work. But she should’ve known. Outside of the suave, debonair, painstakingly handsome teen was a sweet, sensitive man who cared deeply even if he pretended he didn’t. That was one of the things she adored in the first place. She’d bashed him for not being honest when she was just as guilty. So as Gryffindor claimed victory over the Ravenclaw she decided she’d end it, once the celebrations were done.
And of course Gryffindor went all out on the celebrations. After an outpouring of cheering and merriment on the pitch the students had been shepherded back to their common room, the Gryffindor’s wild with excitement, which was only amped as they found the common room now transformed for a party. Gold and red banners hung from the ceiling, music blared from a record player and food and drink gathered on every free table. There was a lot of recapping, a lot of congratulating from various students who came up to James beaming with house pride, and a lot of drinking which had Sabrina feeling merry even if she was thankful not to be noticed, the attention on her ‘beau’. Even Sirius had consented to cheering up, unable to shake the infectious joy of his team mates, though he stayed by the record player, using the role of DJ as means of avoiding his friends. That being said he had hugged James fiercely as they hit the ground of the pitch, congratulating one another before they were swept up in the crowd.
He was standing there now, beer in hand, chatting to Remus though admittedly he wasn’t paying much attention to the conversation, offering indifferent words or grunts where needed. Instead his eyes kept flicking to where James was sitting on the sofa, his mop of dark hair visible above the back of the couch where he was relaxed, a blonde sitting to his left, her head dangerously close to his friend as she kept leaning in to speak. With every glance his smile chipped away.  Fortunately his attention was diverted as a very merry seventh year drifted over to him, throwing his arms around his shoulders as he said, ‘you’re on the music right?’
‘Yeah,’ Sirius said, fighting the urge to shrug him off.
‘Taking requests?’ he asked, ‘it’s gettin’ a bit morbid in here.’
‘Go on then,’ Sirius said, hoping that would shirk him off.
‘Whack on We Are The Champions,’ he said, before strutting off back to his friends gathered in the corner watching them with anticipation. Sirius rolled his eyes but moved to flick through his stack of LPs anyway until he found the one he wanted, waving off the grumble of the crowd as the music died before being reignited again.
It was a slow melodic build that was harshened by the seventh year and his friends who immediately jumped in on the chorus as they realised their request had been heard. Soon enough every student in the room was joining in, revelling in their victory as they called out.
We are the champions  We are the champions  No time for losers  'Cause we are the champions of the World.
James was singing from his seat, his hand in Sabrina’s as the whole couch swayed to the music until they were suddenly pulled up by Marlene and Mary to dance beside the fireplace, huddled in a group of people. James was smiling so hard his cheeks were hurting until Mary smacked him on the arm and said, ‘you should make a speech!’
He glanced at her, finding her brown eyes wide and glinting as the idea set in. He knew it was just a drunken idea but that meant it was something she wouldn't let go of and apparently neither would others as Marlene said, ‘yeah go on Potter!’
‘Nah,’ James laughed, ‘I’m too sozzled for that.’
‘C’mon James,’ Peter encouraged from his other side.
‘Honestly I don’t know what to say,’ James said.
‘Since when do you opt out of a chance to gloat?’ Lily said scathingly from where she was still sitting, legs crossed over one another as she held her glass in hand, staring at it intently as an excuse not to look up.
James swallowed thickly and didn’t reply, his usual repertoire with her feeling empty and awkward now instead of the natural quipping it normally was.
‘Oh go on mate!’ Peter said, nudging his arm, ‘you’re the bloody reason we won.’
‘Yeah Potter!’ Mary said before calling the crowd to attention as she yelled, ‘speech!’
‘Guys,’ Sabrina said, seeing the discomfort in his eyes as all eyes turned to him, some muttering to others to get them to be quiet. James shook his head, waving her off as he knew there was no point fighting his friends.
‘Alright then,’ he said, clearing his throat and grabbing his half-empty bottle as he thought about what to say.
‘Shut it everyone!’ Mary decreed before gesturing that he had the floor. Sabrina slipped her hand into his free one and squoze it reassuringly, receiving a smile in return.
‘Well first I wanna congratulate the whole team for being on top form today,’ James said, looking around at the sea of happy faces. Sirius was standing at the back, watching him with a stony expression that separated him from the pack. Again James’ excitement dimmed but nevertheless he pressed on, unable to keep his adoring fans waiting, ‘without you lot we wouldn’t have won.’
‘Well you helped a bit,’ Peter mused, earning a laugh from everyone that made him beam with pride.
‘Yeah but it’s a team effort,’ James replied, gesturing to the wider crowd with his drink as he added, ‘same with you lot in the stands. Without you there wouldn’t be a reason to try as hard as we do.’
‘Not even to make sure Slytherin doesn’t win the cup?’ someone heckled from somewhere in the room.
‘Well I suppose that’s incentive in itself. Either way we still managed it so thanks and lets have some fun eh? Cheers,’ James said, raising his bottle as a chorus of replies rang out.
‘And let's get thoroughly rat-arsed,’ Mary shouted, earning a louder cheer as she pushed into the room, Marlene trailing behind her as they went for more drinks.
It was a move that knocked Sabrina into James, forcing him to grab onto her so that she wasn’t pulled along or spilled her own drink. She could feel his own bottle in his hand, nestled by her waist, her arm on his bicep as he’d steadied her. She smiled at him and to his disappointment he felt nothing. Nothing more than platonic happiness and looking at him Sabrina felt the same.
‘Well done,’ she said.
‘Thanks,’ James said, leaning further in so that she could hear him over the din of the next song on the record, ‘can’t believe they made me make a speech.’
‘Well at least if this quidditch thing doesn’t work out we know a public speaking career could be on the cards,’ she teased.
‘Oh yeah, next minister for magic I am,’ James grinned. Sabrina smiled back before she sighed. They were having fun but there was no point putting off the inevitable and so she said, ‘James look-’
But James wasn’t listening, he was too busy looking over her shoulder at where Lily had just slammed her drink down onto the coffee table and strode off, shoving through throngs of disgruntled students as she headed for the door. Sabrina whipped her head around and watched her go and before James could stop her she was heading out the portrait hole too, not slowing down as he called her name.
Sabrina had to give it to the girl she was fast. So quick that had she not followed her when she did she wouldn’t have seen the way she turned heading towards the courtyard. Given it was still spring and the night had drawn ever so close the air outside was cold and Lily’s shirt did nothing to protect her from the chill of it. She didn’t even know why she was out here; it wasn’t as if there was anywhere to sit down and she was liable to get cold quickly if she didn’t go back inside. All she knew was that she could no longer sit there watching Sabrina and James cosy up to one another. It made her insides spin and the room much to hot for her liking. That was why she had headed in the direction of a breeze, hoping the cool would clear her head. And it was working well until she heard her name called and turned to find Sabrina standing on the steps of the courtyard, Jamse a few steps behind him and Sirius coming into view just behind him. James glanced at his friend as he appeared but said nothing watching Sabrina and Lily instead.
‘What do you want?’ Lily said, folding her arms across her chest and holding her head high. Sabrina came a touch closer. In her Mary Janes they were almost the same height, looking at each other eye to eye as she stepped onto the cobbled stone of the courtyard.
‘Are you okay?’ Sabrina asked softly.
‘Fine,’ Lily said, glancing at James and tightening her jaw as she felt the sharp sting of tears in her eyes.
‘Are you sure? You run off pretty quickly,’ Sabrina reasoned.
‘Well sorry if I don’t want to watch you snog Potter’s face off,’ Lily said snarkily. At that Sabrina bristled, the original purpose of the prank blaring loud and clear. She had the floor now to just tell the truth and she couldn’t do it, more to the point she was angry at her because of it which was starting to get under her skin as she said, ‘well you were asking me to the other day. Why’s today any different?’
‘Why him?’ Lily shot back, taking Sabrina off guard.
‘What?’ she asked.
‘Out of all the people you could’ve picked to date you picked him,’ Lily said, sounding more upset than she intended, ‘why?’
‘Why not?’ Sabrina replied, ‘James is a good guy.’
‘Did you only just realise that? Because you could have anyone in the school and you picked him after years of being friends with him and no attraction and then boom one day you picked him!’ Lily said angrily.
‘So?’ Sabrina said.
‘It’s weird!’ Lily shouted. James and Sirius were watching on awkwardly now. It was getting more heated and though he couldn’t see Sabrina’s face he could see Lily's and she was getting more upset by the second. He was going to intervene, try and distract some attention to help them both calm down but Sirius put his hand on his arm, stopping him from moving forward. He wanted to hear this explanation.
‘Why do you care?’ Sabrina said, feeling the acceptance coming if she could just push that bit more, ‘I thought you didn't like him.’
‘Of course I bloody do!’ Lily shouted, ‘why do you think-‘
‘I know,’ Sabrina said, cutting her ranting short as her mouth fell agape though she recovered quick enough to say, ‘what?’
‘I know you like him,’ Sabrina said offering her a sympathetic smile, ‘I’ve known all along I was just hoping this would make you realise you did too. Instead of leading him on for the sake of it.’
‘I wasn’t leading him on!’ Lily protested, blushing as Sabrina raised an eyebrow, ‘besides how could you mess with me like that!’
‘It got you to admit the truth didn’t it,’ Sabrina reasoned. Lily sighed.
‘That’s not the…you shouldn’t have done that,’ Lily said sadly.
‘If it makes you feel any better it wasn’t meant to be like this. It was supposed to be a laugh,’ Sabrina said, moving forward to hug her friend loosely, ‘you were just a little more stubborn than planned. I’m sorry.’
‘It’s okay,’ Lily said, smiling sadly though she found her eyes trailing over to James who was far enough away he could no longer hear what either of them were saying as evidenced by the panicked look on his face.
‘Maybe now you can stop dancing around the fact that you actually like one another,’ Sabrina said softly, ‘he really likes you Lily.’
‘I really like him too,’ she said, gnawing on her lip nervously.
‘If it makes you feel any better he’s not as big of a prat as he makes out,’ Sabrina quipped.
‘I heard that,’ James said from somewhere close behind them. She didn’t turn but pulled her hand away from Lily to offer him the finger, giggling with Lily before she said, ‘maybe you two should go and talk about it somewhere?’
‘Good idea,’ Lily said, hugging her friend tightly before letting her go and heading up the steps into the castle before they disappeared from view.
Sirius had been watching the whole thing, trying to wrap his head around the entire charade. He barely paid attention to his friends as they left, James offering him an apologetic smile before he disappeared. He was too focused on Sabrina, on the feelings that churned in his stomach at the sight of her. Before this whole thing had started he hadn't been sure he liked her. She was a friend, a good one and considering he and the opposite sex were rarely just friends he wasn’t sure he wanted to meander into that territory and risk mucking things up for something that might be nothing. But seeing her with James had ruined him, sent him almost as mad as it had Lily though he couldn’t quite bring himself to have the same outburst.
If he was a different man, one not raised in expectation and propriety he would’ve rushed to her, told her how relieved he was that she wasn’t dating James and how it was him he wanted her to be with if she would Just let him. If he rid himself of all modesty and decorum he would’ve hit James the moment he saw them together just as he had wanted to. But no, he couldn’t do that.
In fact as she turned round, her face growing surprised as she realised he was there, he couldn’t find anything more to say than, ‘you two aren’t dating.’
‘Nope,’ Sabrina said, coming closer to him.
‘Why lie?’ he asked.
‘It made Lily see sense didn’t it?’ she shrugged. Sirius stood up off the wall he’d been leaning against and advanced towards her until they were feet apart. He wanted to believe that it was just a prank, a joke and nothing more, but he was scared. Scared that in his failure to pursue her properly he'd lost her to someone even if it was supposed to be a sham.
‘Yeah but what if she hadn't got upset. You would've been hurting her and not even know,’ Sirius said, hoping she’d say something that would make him feel better about the hurt in his own chest.
‘I wasn’t going to marry him,’ Sabrina said aggravatedly, ‘we would've fake split up.’
‘And if you fell for each other,’ he challenged, moving closer as if he could spot the lies in her gorgeous blue eyes.
‘Not a chance,’ she said.
‘That kiss looked pretty real to me,’ he challenged.
‘That was only because you were teasing us,’ Sabrina said.
‘Yeah right,’ Sirius scoffed.
‘It’s true,’ she said, earnestly placing her hand on his bicep. Even through his jumper her touch felt like lava, igniting his body on fire in a way that terrified him so he pulled away, trying to push his feelings down or find a way that he wouldn’t have to be honest with her, ‘yeah, I guess. I mean you don’t want to date anyone right? Should've known it was fake.’
‘I do want to date. I thought me going out with James would prove that,’ she said, stopping him in his tracks and making him look back at her. His grey gaze was heavy on her face now, making her shift awkwardly as she held her elbow, as if her arm across he could hold her together. That was like music to his ears and yet he was reluctant.
‘Why do you say no to everyone who asks you then?’ he asked puzzled, though her words were music to his ears.
‘Because I don’t want to date them,’ she said, she could feel him being reeled in now, dancing around the topic like James and Lily would. So she needed to be brave. If he couldn’t be honest she’d have to be.
‘But you want to date someone?’ he asked.
‘Yeah,’ she said, moving towards him so that there was barely a foot between them, her big blue eyes staring at him as she said, ‘someone who gets very irritable about me dating his best friend. Someone who was very intent on watching everyone who asks me out. Someone who doesn’t realise the reason I’m oblivious to that is because I’m too busy ogling him.’
‘What if you and this person don’t work out?’ Sirius asked quietly, his heart singing but his head very much worrying, ‘I mean what if he’s never dated a friend before.’
‘Well then if it doesn’t work out we go back to being friends,’ Sabrina said, moving to wrap her arms around his waist. Sirius sighed, ‘you make it sound so easy.’
‘Oh it's not. I'm no fan of the dating game, believe me,’ she said, leaning in, ‘but sometimes it's worth it for the right person.’
‘Yeah?’ he asked, his hand brushing past her cheek as he moved a lock of golden hair over her shoulder.
‘Yeah,’ she said, ‘so c’mon.’
‘What?’ Sirius asked.
‘Are you going to show if you’re a better kisser than Potter or not?’ she smiled.
And with that Sirius black made the final move of the game.

PART ONE // PART TWO // PART THREE
Following their agreement James and Sabrina hadn’t really spoken about what ‘dating’ would mean. Now that she was no longer sulking he suggested they go and finish studying in the library rather than a drab toilet block and in there it was too crowded to talk about logistics which is probably why she found a very frantic looking James loitering in the common room the following morning, trying to appear as though he wasn’t waiting for her.
‘Hey Sabs,’ he said, with an awkward smile as she appeared from the staircase. He was dressed in a shirt and jeans, his coat tossed over the ratty couch he was perched on the top of, talking to Sirius who turned as she appeared.
‘Hey,’ she said, glancing at Sirius. She was still miffed at him and irritated that her heart sped up at a mere glance his way. He too was dressed in muggle clothes but where James stayed neat and presentable (until it got to that messy mop of hair) Sirius seemed to thrive in scruffiness. His T-shirt hung loose on his athletic frame, his jacket was unzipped and his choice of shoe was a pair of doc martens she knew he’d bought to annoy his mother. He looked effortlessly cool and irritatingly handsome.
‘We’re waiting for Moony, heading off to the village if you want to join?’ James said.
‘Oh I think I’m meeting Mar,’ Sabrina said which was true but from the look on James’ face she knew it wasn’t a casual invitation. He wanted to speak to her. Sirius however didn’t catch the look on his friend’s face and grew sheepish, appearing to take her rebuttal as a continuation of her sulking.
‘I think she already went down with Mary,’ Sirius said quietly.
‘Oh,’ Sabrina replied.
‘Like I said, you're welcome to join us,’ James said, his eyes widening with suggestion. Sabrina smiled in recognition, ‘yeah, why not.’
‘I’ll just go and check where he is,’ James said, pushing up off the couch and heading to the stairwell. Once he was gone, just leaving the two of them behind in awkward silence, Sabrina folded her arms across her chest suddenly very interested in staring at the soft pink of her new nail polish. She could feel Sirius watching her and she could hear James’ words in her head - ‘He’s different when it comes to people he cares about’. She wanted to believe that was true but she still felt unsure until she heard him clear his throat to get her attention, his face remorseful when she looked up at him.
‘We’re alright aren’t we?’ he asked, genuine worry weaved in his tone which admittedly made her feel better.
‘You upset me,’ she said truthfully.
‘Never said I wasn’t a prat,’ he said, nudging her foot with his shoe. Sabrina smiled and rolled her eyes, ‘at least you’re aware.’
‘Yep,’ Sirius grinned, ‘even if I wasn’t the bollocking James gave me is enough to get anyone up to speed.’
‘James bollocked you?’ she asked, shocked.
‘Him and Moony take it in turns,’ Sirius said, ‘they have a point though. Sorry about yesterday.’
‘It’s fine,’ she said.
‘Yeah?’ he asked.
‘Yeah me and James talked it out. Not a big deal,’ she said.
‘Oh good,’ Sirius said, only half surprised it had been James to convince her to let him back in her good books. After all, cleaning up his messes was practically James’ full-time job at this point, ‘he’s a good one that Prongs.’
‘Yeah he is,’ Sabrina agreed.
✵✵✵
‘So what do we do?’ James murmured in Sabrina’s ear. He was standing behind her, perusing the table of neatly stacked books or at least pretending to. They hadn’t gotten a minute to talk about anything let alone tactics and she could tell he was growing antsy with waiting. Whenever they did pranks it was like this, where the others could bide their time and plan he wanted to rush in hence why he’d asked Lily out nigh on fifty times this year. Sabrina picked up a book and turned to show it to him. To anyone else they’d just look like they were perusing the offerings of Hogsmeade finest book shop, Tomes and Scrolls, rather than planning a fake relationship.
‘What do you mean?’ she asked quietly.
‘Well do I ask you out? Do we hold hands and tell them we’ve got together?’ James probed.
‘No, no nothing like that yet if we go over the top they’ll know somethings not right,’ she reasoned to herself more than anyone. No, This needed finesse.
‘So what?’ James asked, taking the book from her and flipping through a couple of pages. It gave her an excuse to lean in, close enough no one would be able to hear without being stood right next to them, placing her hand on his arm as she looked over the book.
‘I don’t know, maybe you mention how we had a good chat yesterday, lay the foundations of something changing, spend some time together just the two of us and then just announce it happened naturally.’
‘Mm,’ James said, his gaze still on the book, his glasses perched on the end of his nose.
‘What?’ Sabrina asked self-consciously. James grinned, ‘nothing. But considering you’re not a marauder you’re quite good at this prank stuff.’
After the bookshop they decided to head to the three broomsticks to avoid the slight chill blowing through the village which had been trying its best to bask in the spring sunshine. It was crowded inside with other students having the same idea but they spotted Marlene and Mary tucked away at the back, waving them over.
‘Fancy a drink?’ Sirius asked, looking back at his friends as he headed towards the bar.
‘Butter beer please mate,’ James said.
‘Make it two,’ Remus added.
‘Bri?’ He asked. Sabrina hesitated and glanced at her watch. She’d only come to the village for quills but since they were early she’d opted to follow them around. Now time was ticking on and though she’d come inside to get out of the cold she did have a choir practice to get to. But Sirius was watching her, those puppy dog eyes in full force. He’d been better today, overcompensating for their crossed word but still his natural charming self. She loved him like that and unwilling to let it go just yet she said, ‘a quick one. I’ve got choir in an hour.’
Sirius gave her a fake salute and headed to the bar before she headed to join the table of her friends. Marlene and Mary were on a booth side and Remus and James had taken a stool each around the table which meant there was only one seat left at the table and glancing around she didn’t spot any others free. Noticing her predicament James scooted over, leaving half a seat for her to perch on, his arm around her hip so that she wasn’t falling off. None of them seemed to notice because Mary was too busy grinning at her friend as she said, ‘hey Sabs.’
‘Hi,’ Sabrina replied.
‘Thought you couldn’t stay in the village today,’ Mary said casually though her eyes were locked on Sabrina as if she had something up her sleeve.
‘I’ve gotta go soon,’ Sabrina said, as Sirius appeared at her side and placed a tray of butterbeers on the table. He doled out the drinks, receiving looks of appreciation in return as Mary continued, ‘that’s a shame you could’ve said hi to Gabe. He’s been looking over here every five seconds.’
‘I’m not stopping,’ Sabrina said, fighting the urge to look at where Gabriel was sitting.
‘He’ll be crushed,’ Marlene giggled. Sabrina said nothing and picked up her butterbeer, taking a sip and hoping the sweet foam would be enough to make her not feel guilty about turning the boy down. Though as she did she locked eyes with Sirius who seemed unsure about how to tackle the topic given his previous input had not been well received. As he lowered his gaze though he noticed James’ hand planted firmly on Sabrina’s hip, his thumb entangled in the belt loop. Which is probably why James felt her tense, uncomfortable at the scrutiny, and promptly changed the topic to quidditch.
Sabrina kept quiet though most of the afternoon. It wasn’t exactly comfortable sitting in the pub feeling three sets of eyes on her but she didn’t want to flee for the second day in a row. James kept glancing at her making sure she was okay given how quiet she was. Sirius kept looking at her oddly, as if he wanted to ask her something but couldn’t find the words. And there was a distinct hot patch on the back of her head where Gabriel kept staring, not stupid enough, probably hurt but too proud to come and ask if she had lied about being free to spare his feelings.
Fortunately time finally ticked on close enough to her choir practice start time that her leaving wouldn’t be weird. With an exaggerated look at her watch she grabbed her bag and said, ‘I should probably head back. I’ve got choir practice.’
‘Rather you than me that wind looks Baltic,’ Mary said, looking out the window at the wizards and witches who hurried past looking windswept and ruddy from cold.
‘I’ll be fine,’ Sabrina said, grabbing her bag from under the table. Even though she’d only gone down to the village for quills it had managed to become quite heavy, with not only her extra spoils but Sirius, James and Remus’, all of them looking at her with begging expressions before she took whatever they’d bought and dumped it into her bag. She groaned under the weight.
‘Here give us that,’ James said, taking the bag from her, unbothered by the heaviness, ‘I’ll walk you up.’
‘You don’t need to,’ Sabrina said though her shoulder was already aching from the tiniest lift.
‘I don’t mind,’ James said, standing up tall and placing the bag on their vacated stool whilst he got his jacket on. Sabrina looked at him curiously but not having the time to waste threw on her own coat.
‘Why don’t we all head back,’ Sirius said, looking between them both.
‘Nah it’s alright mate,’ James said, swinging the bag over his shoulder, ‘right Sabs?’
‘Yeah,’ Sabrina said, unfurling her hair from where it nestled in the collar of her coat, ‘see you guys later.’
‘See you later,’ Mary, Marlene and Remus replied as the pair began to weave through the tables. Sirius watched them go before turning back to his butterbeer, a pout on his face.
Mary was right, the wind was bitter outside, hitting Sabrina’s face like little needles as they made their way through the village and onto the path back to the castle. She was quiet, focusing on trying to stop her teeth from chattering when she felt James’ eyes on her and looked to find him watching her, a smile on his face.
‘What?’ she asked with a smile.
‘Nothing,’ he shrugged, ‘you okay?’
‘Fine why?’ she replied.
‘You felt off, in the pub I mean,’ he said. He had been watching her most of the time, quiet and thoughtful. Sabrina sighed, ‘I felt bad about Gabe.’
‘Ah,’ James said. They had slowed down, the path in front of them now slick with a thick, muddy puddle that students had churned into slop as they walked to and from the village. James moved to the edge of the path and took a long stride, dipping his trainers in the shallowest spot of slutch so that he could launch himself to the other side of the water. Sabrina watched him go with envy. He was quite a bit taller than her and had an athletic grace about him that helped him get along with no issue at all. For her it was probably going to be a staggered squelch through the muck that would leave her muddy for choir practice and that was if Filch didn’t catch her first.
‘Here,’ James said, seeing her trying to plan her route. He offered his hand out, and she took it gratefully, allowing him to direct her until she was safely on terra firma.
‘Thanks,’ she said, as they started up the path. To her surprise he didn’t let go of her hand, his slender fingers wrapping around her small ones. His hand was cold, but so was hers so she couldn’t complain.
‘You didn’t have to come with me you know,’ she said. The castle was coming into view now, the grey stone looking darker as the bright spring afternoon lit it from behind.
‘I wanted to make sure you were okay,’ he said, offering her a smile that grew cheekier as he said, ‘besides a boyfriend would.’
✵✵✵
Over the next couple of days Sabrina and James put all their efforts into seeming quite the couple. They didn’t tell anyone but they did everything they could to arouse suspicion. Sitting together at meal times, disappearing to the library together, appearing together everywhere they went. She laughed at his jokes, an obscene giggle she had never heard come from her lips before and he was distinctly more familiar with her, carrying her bag, letting her rest her feet on him when they lay on the couch, her head on his shoulder during long study sessions. It didn’t take long for people to start noticing the difference but it was a while before anyone dared ask outright and of course it was Mary who did it first.
‘Okay what’s going on?’ she said, turning to look at Sabrina who had been sitting on the bench beside her reading her book instead of watching the gryffindor quidditch practice she’d been dragged to. She had been endeavouring to watch, something that the girlfriend of a quidditch superstar would do, but the game didn’t really interest her and so she had given up half way through. Apparently so had Mary, watching her instead of the game, an accusing look on her pretty face.
‘What do you mean?’ Sabrina asked, closing her book as she mustered her most innocent expression.
‘You and Potter,’ Mary said.
‘What about me and Potter?’ Sabrina asked.
‘Somethings going on,’ Marlene said from Mary’s other side. Sabrina looked between them, not daring to look at Lily beside her as she took a breath and said, ‘we’re dating.’
‘I knew it!’ Mary giggled.
‘Oh my god,’ Marlene gasped.
‘Since when?’ Lily asked, decidedly less amused than her other friends. Sabrina looked at her, a sympathetic smile on her face. Lily looked irritable but Sabrina knew there was only one reason for that. She didn’t have much chance to dwell on it though as Mary slapped her thigh to get her attention and said, ‘come on.’
‘Oh, um, about a week,’ Sabrina said.
‘How did that happen?’ Marlene asked excitedly.
‘We just got to talking, after the Gabe thing, I was a bit upset and he checked up on me. He was really sweet actually,’ Sabrina blushed.
‘But I thought he liked Lily,’ Mary frowned.
‘Probably just like winding me up,’ Lily sniped.
‘He wasn’t,’ Sabrina said, ‘but you don’t like him right?’
‘Course not,’ Lily said, utterly unconvincing. Marlene and Mary shared a look as a palpable tension settled between the girls.
‘Because if you do I would-’
‘I don’t like James bloody Potter,’ Lily grumbled.
‘Okay, okay, just checking,’ Sabrina said. She’d known the redhead was stubborn but this was unparallelled. Fortunately Mary was the one who spoke next.
‘Well that’s good. If you two like each other why not,’ Mary said, ‘he is proper fit.’
‘Hey you should be careful Mary, he’s a taken man now,’ Marlene giggled, deepening Lily’s scowl.
‘I don’t mind,’ Sabrina giggled, trying her best to ignore the red head. After all, she had a chance to speak up now but she wasn’t. She could put a stop to all this lunacy once and for all if she was just honest with herself and still nothing.
‘I bet,’ Marlene said, before she stood up, noticing that the team were now descending one by one to the ground and headed into the changing rooms, ‘c’mon they’re finished.’
Sabrina stood, throwing her book back into her bag and smoothing out her skirt until it was no longer crumpled. As the girls shuffled out of the bench Lily placed her hand on Sabrina’s arm forcing her to stop, ‘congratulations I suppose.’
‘Thanks,’ Sabrina said and with that Lily pushed past her and followed her friends down towards the changing rooms.
Sabrina trudged along behind them rolling her eyes at how stubborn Lily was being. She just wished she would get it over with. Be open and honest about her feelings for once. After all, hadn't she been putting James through the wringer just for the sake of it? She tried to put it out of her mind and let her sulk, but her idea was thwarted as Mary called out to where James and Sirius were appearing out of the changing rooms, now decked out in their normal clothes rather than flying gear.
‘Oi Potter,’ she hollered, causing the pair of them to look her way, ‘congrats.’
‘What for?’ James asked, his brow furrowed. Sabrina knew where it was going and rather than have Mary scream it throughout the grounds she pushed herself forward and said, ‘I told them.’
‘Told them, oh, told them,’ James said, his thoughts clicking into place as she stared at him pointedly, ‘thanks MacDonald.’
‘Told them what?’ Sirius asked gruffly from beside him.
‘We’re dating,’ James said, offering an arm out for Sabrina to climb under. She moved quickly to him, nestling into his side in a way that made Mary and Marlene giggle and Sirius and Lily’s unimpressed looks deepen.
‘Since when?’ Sirius asked with a scowl.
‘About a week,’ James said, analysing his best friend's face for any trace of anger or hurt, not entirely unconvinced Sirius wouldn’t lamp him then and there. But no, Sirius was much too proper for that and forced his face into something neutral, his anger not on James but Sabrina as he accusingly said, ‘I thought you didn’t want to date anyone.’
‘Well he’s not just anyone is he,’ she said, ignoring the flutter in her stomach at his disapproval instead leaning into James’s shoulder. Lily looked away.
‘Soppy gits,’ Marlene teased.
With that they made their way back to the castle, Hogwarts hottest couple striding ahead with Marlene and Mary asking several questions as they headed back up the path to the castle. Sirius and Lily brought up the rear, trudging silently behind their friends, sulky faces mirroring one another.
After a while Lily managed to get a hold of herself, scarfing down dinner and proceeding to the library, but Sirius remained glum and muttered something about heading to bed the moment he’d finished his pudding. James and Sabrina shared a look but said nothing other than polite goodbyes.
When James did go to bed all three of his dorm mates were already up there pottering about their bedsides as prepared for sleep. James went to his bed without a word, kicking his shoes under the bed and shirking his jacket off. Remus was sitting in the bed next to him, reading peacefully, and he could hear Peter in the bathroom finishing up brushing his teeth before he appeared a second later. He didn’t dare look over at Sirius who was throwing his clothes wherever they landed as he shoved on his pyjamas. James had just pulled his shirt off when he heard Remus speak, not looking up from his book as he said, ‘the rumour mill says you and Sabs are dating.’
As his gaze went to James so did everyone else’s, Peter's mouth dropping open as he heard the news for the first time. He could feel Sirius glaring at him but he kept his focus on Remus as he replied, ‘yeah we are.’
‘Since when?!’ Peter gasped.
‘Couple of days,’ James shrugged, for once feeling hot under true scrutiny, his normal penchant for attention all but vanished.
‘Bloody hell!’ Peter beamed, ‘congrats mate.’
‘Thanks,’ James said hesitantly as he looked at Remus who seemed less enthused, ‘aren’t you happy for me Moony?’
‘Are you happy?’ Remus asked.
‘Course,’ James said.
‘Then of course I am,’ Remus shrugged though he glanced over at Sirius, who gaze was now intently fixed on undoing his watch.  James cleared his throat and without thinking the black haired boy looked up.
‘You alright mate?’ James asked. Now was his chance. All he had to do was admit to the feelings he blatantly had. But he didn't, instead he diverted his attention to another topic, one that made James’ insides churn as it required lying.
‘What about Lily?’ he asked, throwing his now undone watch on the bedside table. James swallowed.
‘What about her?’ he asked, praying his voice wouldn’t crack.
‘You’ve talked about her every day since third year,’ Sirius said.
‘Yeah and she’s clearly not interested in me,’ James said, the words hurting his mouth as they came out though he reminded himself of what Sabrina had said, why they were putting on this show in the first place, ‘might as well be with someone who does.’
‘If you’re just dating her for the sake of it-’ Sirius started angrily.
‘Since when do you care about treating girls properly,’ James said harshly. It was getting heated now, he could tell from the way Remus sat up, preparing to get involved if needed, but he didn’t back down. It didn’t have to be like this if Sirius would just be honest with himself, with his best friend.
‘She’s my friend,’ Sirius said angrily.
‘Yeah and she’s my friend too,’ James replied just as irritably.
‘More apparently,’ Sirius sniped.
‘So? Have you got a problem with that?’ James baited.
‘Why would I?’ Sirius huffed, stomping towards the bathroom before slamming the door behind him angrily, the force of it making the thin windows rattle. James sighed and sat down on his bed.
‘I’m happy for you James,’ Peter said as he climbed into his own bed. James smiled weakly, ‘thanks mate.’
✵✵✵
To no one’s surprise James and Sabrina were the talk of the entire year. No one had seen this romance coming, with several confused about just how it had come about, and yet almost every began to accept them with only two exceptions. Lily seemed to have taken the slight on the chin, being overly okay with the pair of them, even when they added a hand holding or hug in front of her for flourish. Sirius however was in quite the mood and seemingly avoiding them whenever he could. James had commented on him not being around but he had shrugged and told him he was busy which was why James was surprised he’d opted to join their study session. In the run up to exams the great hall had been opened up in between meals to allow students more places to revise. It wasn’t as quiet as the library or as comfortable as the common room but it did encourage students to support one another which everyone needed during the busy season. Teachers had even started presiding over these periods, offering to mark practice essays or papers if students wanted it.
James had just given his to Professor McGonagall who appeared at his shoulder and handed it back as she said, ‘well done Potter and good luck for tomorrow.’
‘Thanks Professor,’ James said, taking the piece of parchment from her to find Exceeds Expectations elegantly written in red ink at the top of his paper. He tucked it under his stack of homework with a smile.
‘Ready for tomorrow then?’ Sabrina asked with a smile.
‘Think so,’ James said, ‘though the weathers not looking good so I’ll take all the luck McGonagall’s offering.’
‘You don’t need luck, you’ll be great,’ Sabrina said, rolling her eyes.
‘Well I have to be when my little cheerleader is in the stands,’ James teased. Sabrina giggled, her lack of interest for the game despite being his ‘girlfriend’ amusing them both. Especially considering Lily’s appreciation for quidditch had come out of the blue, James the topic of conversation in any post-match analysis she offered.
‘Oh I’ll be front and centre with my Pom poms,’ Sabrina mused.
‘Might even seal the victory with a kiss eh?’ Sirius said scathingly from across the table causing both their heads to turn to look at him. He wasn’t looking up, pretending to read from a heavy textbook though he must’ve been listening to be able to interject. It was the most he’d said all period.
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’ James asked tersely.
‘Nothing,’ Sirius shrugged, ‘I just find it odd that the two of you haven’t kissed yet.’
‘Who says?’ Sabrina scoffed. It was true, though they’d made a good show of it their feelings were still platonic and somehow kissing felt over the line even if it was pretend. She didn’t think anyone had noticed.
‘Well I haven’t seen you kiss him,’ Sirius said, his grey eyes challenging as he watched her before looking at those around and asking, ‘anyone else?’
No one replied but there were a couple of sceptical murmurs further up the table, a distinct thud as Mary slapped Marlene’s thigh making her fall quiet in case it interrupted the show. Sirius smirked.
‘Funny that.’
‘Well sorry to disappoint but this isn’t a window in Amsterdam,’ Sabrina snapped.
‘Sabs is right just because we don’t flaunt ourselves in front of you-’ James reasoned, earning a snort from Lily. As eyes turned towards her she pretended not to notice and shrugged, ‘well when has James Potter ever not flaunted something.’
‘Maybe some things are private,’ Sabrina snapped, grabbing her parchment and scrambling over the desk so that she could join the back of the queue for McGonagall.
She was seething though she didn’t know why. Of course all this was to make them think they were dating so that they’d come clean but what was the point if they didn’t believe it? More importantly had they not said anything because they knew their friends were messing with them.
She was about ten deep in the queue which was moving slowly as a beak nosed second year was holding it up, asking McGonagall a million questions about his upcoming transfiguration exam. She stood with her arms folded, pouting, but she straightened up when she felt someone come and stand behind her. As they leaned in and spoke she tensed.
‘You’re not dating are you,’ Remus’ soft soothing voice whispered in her ear. Sabrina whipped around, looking at his scarred face and finding a sympathetic smile breaking the one across his lips apart. She swallowed thickly, ‘of course, I mean why would…how did you know?’
‘Because you like Sirius as much as James likes Lily,’ he said simply, gesturing for her to move forward as the line moved up. This was what baffled her. How could every boy in Hogwarts see her true intentions but the one she wanted to.
‘Oh,’ she said softly, ‘should’ve known you’d work it out.’
‘Only because he’s too busy moping to see what’s in front of his face,’ Remus whispered, his face growing thoughtful as he asked, ‘why?’
‘Because,’ Sabrina said as if that was an answer. Remus merely raised an eyebrow making her sigh and say, ‘because everyone seems to be intent on playing games instead of being bloody honest! We just figured we would join in, see if it made a difference.’
‘Ah,’ Remus said knowingly, meandering forward another step. They were only a couple of people away from McGonagall now and moving quickly as the older years had no time or want to chit chat with her and simply handed over their work without issue.
‘Don’t say anything,’ Sabrina pleaded, dropping a voice to a whisper just in case her house mistress was listening. No doubt if she knew she’d put a stop to all this silliness whether that just be for the benefit of the quidditch scores she didn’t know.
‘My lips are sealed,’ Remus said as the pair of them redhed the front and handed over their essays. McGonagall nodded curtly and tucked them to the back of her pile.
As they turned around James appeared, his bag slung over his shoulder and a scowl on his face though it relaxed as he approached them. Sabrina felt her stomach flip flop wondering what she had missed.
‘Everything okay?’ Remus asked first.
‘Everyone keeps muttering about us kissing,’ James sighed, looking at Sabrina as he said, ‘wanna go?’
Sabrina looked down the table to where Sirius was sitting a self satisfied smirk, one that always roused whenever he was immensely pleased with himself, which he evidently was now that he had gotten the students around them buzzing about their personal displays of affection. She sighed, she did still have things to be doing work wise but there was no way she'd be able to sit still hearing everyone rabbit on about her in hushed tones and so she nodded, smiling sympathetically at Remus who offered her a reassuring wink indicating he’d keep her secret for her. After grabbing her bag, ignoring the cool gaze of Sirius Black they headed out of the great hall together, James’ arm slung over her shoulder.
✵✵✵
After the upset in the great hall the pair decided that being around people wasn’t their favourite thing for now and so retreated to the safety of the girls bathroom, even though it meant skipping their last lesson. They stayed there for a long time, working in comfortable silence before eventually James’ stomach growls got too loud to ignore and the pair headed for some food, favouring going to the kitchens rather than sitting in the hall again. Once they loaded up on dinner they headed back to the tower, the cold stone of the bathroom no longer an appealing option.
Sabrina had been in the boys dormitory before, on a couple of occasions but it was mostly to study with Remus or listen to music with Sirius rather than to hang out with James. Which was a surprise given the immaculate conditions he kept his side of the room in and the ample amount of sweets he managed to scrounge up, promising her he’d buy Remus them back as soon he had a chance. It was nice even if it did end up with them doing their own thing, James polishing his already spotless broom and Sabrina reading her book. Though as she watched him, ensuring the handles shined bright as a galleon she couldn’t help but feel the niggle that Sirius had a point.
After all how many girls had she seen Sirius kiss, too many to count, even if he had slowed down a bit this year. He was never going to believe that she and James were a couple unless he had visual proof. The only problem was that she had never kissed anyone. That was why she was so reluctant to do so, waiting for the right person, a certain tall, dark and handsome prat. But if it wasn’t going to be him, why not James.
Though she was sure he’d already got it as clean as possible he rubbed furiously on a piece of chrome, pink tongue jutting out between his lips as he concentrated, but he looked up as she placed her book down and scooted to the edge of the bed. He watched her, placing his broom so that it leaned up against one of the supports of his four poster, waiting for her to say something.
‘Maybe they’re right,’ she said nervously.
‘Right about?’ he asked.
‘Us kissing,’ she said embarrassedly dropping her gaze to her lap, ‘I mean we’re supposed to be a couple so I guess they have a point.’
‘Yeah, you’re right,’ James said, though admittedly the only reason he hadnt kissed her so far was because he was sure that would drive Sirius over the edge and not in the desired way. He just wanted his friend to be honest with himself, he didn’t want a black eye. Sabrina hesitated, deliberating on what to say before she said, ‘maybe we should try it…now instead of in front of everyone.’
‘Yeah,’ James said, ‘good idea.’
She shuffled forward, allowing her legs to hang over the edge of the bed though given the height of it they barely skimmed the floor. James turned, placing his hand behind her on the bed so that he could see her properly. He had thought she was just going to lean in and kiss him but she kept her eyes down, too nervous to look up as she muttered, ‘have you ever…you know?’
‘Oh, um yeah,’ he said, his cheeks flushing as he clocked on to why she was asking. His embarrassment was probably why he found himself adding more detail than necessary, the words falling out of his mouth, ‘Delphine Greengrass in third year, remember me and Sirius had that bet.’
‘Oh yeah,’ she said quietly. James cleared his throat, ‘have you?’
‘No,’ she said honestly.
‘Oh, are you sure you want to?’ he asked, ‘because we don’t have to you know. We can just tell everyone it’s none of their bloody business.’
‘Not it’s okay,’ she said, chewing on the inside of her cheek, ‘we’re never gonna convince them if not. Moony already knows.’
‘Yeah but that’s no reason,’ James started before the words sunk in, ‘wait how does Moony, you know what never mind, I’m not surprised.’
‘He’s clever our Moony,’ Sabrina smiled softly.
‘Yeah he is,’ James grinned, his tone dropping lower as he said, ‘are you sure you want to?’
‘Yeah,’ she nodded, ‘just kiss me.’
Tentatively James leant in allowing his lips to brush against hers. They were soft and pliable and admittedly a little tense before she relaxed, her hand ghosting up the side of his face as she returned the kiss before they broke apart breathlessly.
‘That wasn’t too bad,’ Sabrina giggled.
‘Oh thanks Sabs,’ James grinned, ‘I’ll try not to have too much of a wounded ego.’
‘Oh shut up,’ she chuckled, pulling him back towards her by the hair, leading this time as their lips met once more. Not to be out done James pulled her to him until they were smushed up against the headboard of his bed, lost to anything that wasn’t this.
That was until the door opened without warning, giving them little time to break apart and by the time James was a decent amount of space away, wiping his mouth from the excess saliva, Sirius was watching them, his jaw set.
‘Sorry,’ he muttered, staring angrily at Sabrina before he turned away and added, ‘didn’t know you were here.’
With that he headed out, slamming the door roughly behind him and though she had been breathless from the kiss now she felt as though all the air had been sucked from her lungs, worry settling in. This was meant to be a bit of good fun, a lesson for all and yet now it felt very much no fun at all.
‘Did he seem mad?’ she asked nervously. James forced a smile and shrugged, ‘he’ll be fine. Promise.’
Sabina nodded but she wasn’t so sure.

Sirius was awake. He had been for a good five minutes and yet he hadn’t endeavoured to wake Daisy who was laying on her back beside him, as peaceful as he’d seen her these past few days. In fact he hadn’t realised just how much he had missed her, the absence of her only made more evident now that she was back in his bed. Though she must’ve felt him staring at her as after a moment she stirred, her eyes fluttering open as she stretched and smiled. He offered her a smile in return which widened as she lifted her hand up and pushed the fallen strands of hair from his eyes, her hand ghosting along his cheek until he took it and pressed a kiss to her palm. At that she hummed softly which was enough to spark a fire in him, making him move forward until they were nose to nose before he pressed a kiss to her lips. Daisy responded with enthusiasm, her fingers knotting in his hair to pull him to her as he draped his body across her, his hand ghosting down her torso and dancing underneath the hem of her t-shirt.
Sirius could feel his excitement building, the urges of a teenage boy running rampant as did his hands though he knew his friends were only on the other side of the curtain and would no doubt be waking up soon if they hadn’t already. He was racing against the clock, responding to Daisy’s quiet moans of encouragement which were cruelly replaced by a startled shriek as the curtains flew open.
‘Mate are you getting out of bed or what we’re gonna be late,’ James said as he appeared at the bedside, not noticing their entanglement until it was too late, his cheeks going pink as he looked down and mumbled, ‘oh sorry I didn’t know…’
‘Evidently,’ Sirius grumbled, pulling away from Daisy and sitting up so he could yank the other canopies open now that they were already disturbed and his other friends would no doubt be angling to see what was occurring.
‘It’s alright we’re up,’ Daisy said, sitting up until she sat beside him.
‘Yeah I bet,’ James teased, dodging a pillow as Sirius launched it with the hand that wasn’t interlaced with Daisy’s. Remus chuckled from where he was putting his shoes on at the end of his bed making James beam a cocky smile as he said, ‘anyway come on. Can’t be late for the last game of the season.’
‘Especially not when you’re technically on the team,’ Peter reasoned from where he was also getting his shoes and socks on.
‘Oh yeah I forgot about that,’ James said, not looking up from where he was rummaging in his quidditch bag until Sirius snorted and said, ‘thanks mate. Not like I won the last match for you or anything.’
‘A lot has happened since then,’ James said, rolling his eyes. Daisy stayed quiet, resting her head on Sirius’ shoulder as she listened intently. James had a point, the last match felt like eons ago yet everything that had occurred in between felt as though it had all in one day.
‘It’s a shame you can’t play today Pads,’ Remus said, ‘it’ll be the first cup you’ve not been a part of.’
‘Yeah it’d be nice to have you on side when we win,’ James said.
‘Wow that’s confident,’ Daisy giggled, making Sirius smile and James smirk smugly as he said, ‘there’s no way we’re losing.’
‘Prongs is right. Hufflepuff doesn't stand a chance,’ Peter agreed.
‘Well then I suppose we better get ready huh?’ Daisy smiled, pulling away from Sirius though she spoke only to him in, her voice low and loving as she said, ‘I’m gonna go get changed, ‘kay?’
‘Okay,’ Sirius said, missing her already.
‘Meet me downstairs? Say common room in ten?’ she asked, earning nothing but a nod in agreement before he leaned in and kissed her once more. She smiled against his lips, not seeing the way the boys rolled their eyes and averted their gazes to allow them to have a moment. Sirius watched forlornly as she climbed out of the bed, leaning in to give him one last kiss on the cheek as she murmured, ‘goodbye.’
‘Bye,’ he muttered as she pulled away and waltzed through the room throwing a, ‘see ya soon,’ over her shoulder before she left receiving a round of ‘bye Daisys’ in reply.
Once she was gone Sirius watched the door, trying to quell the yearning in his chest and the throb in his lower half she’d stirred up in less than five minutes of being awake. He was in his own world so he didn’t notice James waiting for him to look his way, leaning against the bed post with a smirk on his face.
‘What?’ Sirius said when he noted the staring.
‘You two made up then?’ James asked, making his friend’s brow furrow as he said, ‘how did you-’
‘Oh come on mate,’ Remus snorted.
‘Look at him thinking he’s all mysterious and aloof,’ James grinned, going back to his quidditch bag as Sirius clambered over his bed clothes until he was sitting on the end of his bed.
‘Yeah and not a right miserable git when they’re not talking,’ Remus grinned.
‘Very funny,’ Sirius said sarcastically though he couldn’t help but worry how they’d seemed if everyone had cottoned on to what had been happening. He’d tried to keep his emotions in check so that they needn’t tell the group in case it was handled poorly but it appeared he might as well not have bothered which is why he found himself adding, ‘are we that obvious?’
‘As I always say,’ Remus said, making Sirius look in his direction, ‘the two of you are as bad as one another.’
‘Yeah and it’s hard not to notice when you’ve had a face like a wet weekend all week,’ Peter reasoned.
‘Well, well done detectives,’ Sirius said, partially embarrassed at how transparent he’d been.
‘Thanks but it was Lil who noticed it,’ James explained, ‘she said something was off but then Dais didn’t spend the night in our dorm the night of Moony’s transition so then she was sure.’
‘Why didn’t you say something?’ Sirius asked, slightly panicked at just how perceptive Lily had been. After all the reason he’d been stewing by himself was that he didn't dare tell James or her and cause more upset. For them or Daisy.
‘Like I said there’s been a lot going on besides we figured you’d get over it sooner or later,’ James replied as he took a seat on his bed, all dressed in his match day clothes with his bag by his side ready to head down to the pitch. He was looking at Sirius now as if waiting for a reply, one that Sirius didn’t know how to give as he didn’t know what details to share until he said, ‘so go on what was it?’
Sirius hesitated, glancing at his other friends who were now watching him just as carefully, hanging on for the explanation he had to give. He couldn’t lie of course if anything his inability to fool them had been evidenced within the last five minutes and he was sure if he tried to fib they’d sniff it out nevertheless he started slow, ‘we had a fight.’
‘About?’ James asked.
‘She had an argument with Regulus,’ he said, hesitating before he said, ‘before the attack.’
‘And?’ Remus pressed.
‘And he basically said it wasn’t over, that they had something else planned,’ Sirius said.
‘Bloody hell,’ Peter said.
‘But she didn’t tell me or anyone else,’ Sirius said, ‘so I got upset because she was keeping secrets which led to her almost being hurt. I mean Lil did get hurt.’
‘Yeah but she didn’t do it on purpose,’ James reasoned, taking him by surprise at how calm and collected he sounded.
‘No, I know but we promised no secrets and she didn’t say anything,’ Sirius said, feeling foolish at treating her so badly.
‘Yeah because we’ve never kept secrets thinking the others can’t handle it,’ Remus said pointedly, making Sirius recall at least the first two years he’d dodged every question and suspicion about him being a werewolf for fear of losing them as friends.
‘I know, I know,’ Sirius sighed, ‘I know I was being unfair. I was just hurt I guess.’
‘Well I’m glad you made up. I bet she was feeling guilty enough,’ James said with concern lacing his tone.
‘You’re not mad at her?’ Sirius asked, recalling the way he’d been fizzing with anger and worry the night Lily had been hurt. That had been partly why he’d not caved to forgive her straight away, the moment she looked at him with those big sad green eyes.
‘Why would I be?’ James asked, confused.
‘Lil got hurt,’ Sirius reasoned.
‘So did Dais,’ James rebutted, ‘look I care about both of them. And at the end of the day I know she would’ve only been thinking of us well, probably of you.’
Sirius’ brow furrowed wondering what he could mean. Sure Daisy’s intention would’ve been to not panic the group but why would she not tell him. If he was being honest with himself that had been what had hurt him the most because there was nothing he wouldn’t tell her. James sighed, ‘I mean you haven’t exactly been okay when it comes to him.’
‘What does that mean?’ Sirius asked.
‘See again wet weekend,’ Peter chimed in. Sirius sighed wondering just how obvious he was. Of course he’d noticed over the past few weeks how depressed the idea of Regulus joining death eater ranks made him. At first he could push it away and feel as though it was something that was far on the horizon but the poisoning had made him realise that it was coming quicker than ever. That soon enough his baby brother would be one of them for good. And though they’d never been particularly close, as evidenced by Regulus’ scathing accusations yesterday, he had been hit with a wave of melancholia every time someone brought up his brother. Evidently he hadn’t hid it very well.
‘She was probably just worried she’d upset you,’ Remus said, pulling him from his thoughts.
‘Yeah probably,’ Sirius nodded, before reasoning, ‘but we need to be honest with each other. All of us.’
‘Agreed,’ James said, misinterpreting that as the end of the conversation as he tried to grab his bag and get ready to head downstairs. However his black-haired friend still had more to say and mumbled, ‘speaking of honesty…me and Reg had it out.’
‘Really?’ James asked, turning around from where he’d stood up.
‘When?’ Peter added, standing up too and coming forward since James had blocked his view.
‘Last night,’ Sirius said, looking at his feet as he felt that old familiar wave of sadness hitting.
‘We wondered where the two of you had gotten to,’ Remus said, offering his friend a sad smile.
‘Thought you were making up to be honest,’ Peter quipped, earning a weak laugh from the boys as Sirius chuckled half-heartedly and mumbled, ‘I wish.’
‘So what happened?’ Remus asked after a beat. Sirius shrugged.
‘I basically accused him of being the one behind it all and he said I was right,’ Sirius explained.
‘I knew it couldn’t have been Crouch,’ James muttered bitterly.
‘Not on his own at least,’ Remus agreed.
‘So what?’ Peter asked, urging Sirius to continue.
‘He basically said he didn’t want to do it but he had to. He explained how his idea was anticipating him getting caught and then when we didn’t manage to he arranged the whole thing to happen when no one was around so that he could say he mistimed it. Only thing was that the girls ruined his plans,’ Sirius said, his chest tightening at the idea of the girls unknowingly walking into a trap.
‘Maybe he shouldn’t have done it at all then if he felt so bad about it,’ James said through gritted teeth, the anger Sirius had anticipated for Daisy evidently finding a different channel, one that sparked a guilt to flood through him followed by the urge to defend his brother as he said, ‘he doesn’t have a choice.’
‘Everyone has choices Pads,’ James retorted.
‘Not him,’ Sirius said, swallowing thickly, ‘or at least he doesn’t see that he does. I offered him an out, an olive branch, to come with me but he said no. Basically told me to let him go because I already abandoned him for…well you lot.’
‘Well we can’t force him to choose the right thing. Maybe he’ll see one day and decide to go a different way,’ Remus said, offering him a small smile when he saw just how het up his friend had become. James must’ve seen the guilt churning around in Sirius’ stomach too because he softened, his anger mellowing as he said, ‘as long as you’re there for him that’s all you can do.’
‘Yeah, the boys are right,’ Peter agreed.
‘I guess,’ Sirius said sadly. James nodded and stood up, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder as he looked down at him with a sympathetic smile, ‘anyway let’s forget about it. We’ve got quidditch to think of.’
‘That’s true,’ Sirius smiled.
‘And let's face it if you keep Dais waiting any longer she might think you’ve fallen out with her again,’ James quipped, dodging Sirius’ fist as he threw a playful jab his way, his laugh bouncing around the dorm as he ran to the door.
✵✵✵
Since it was the last game of the season James had insisted on being down at the pitch early and since the sun was shining and the air warm but breezy the others had decided to join him. It meant they were the first down there and could therefore grab good seats but since there were so many of them they decided to spread out over two benches rather than one, mostly given that the boys would be properly watching and the girls watching and talking. They chatted for a while in their huddle, mostly about the final exam, but as others started to filter in conversation split into two groups and tension started to rise. Daisy could feel Lily becoming fidgety, watching the doors to the changing rooms closely instead of paying attention to the girl's conversation. Watching her sister Daisy had to suppress a smile. It was crazy to think that less than a year ago Lily wouldn’t have had a care in the world about quidditch, other than house pride, and now she was wringing her hands with nerves just waiting for them to start. Rather than embarrass her by bringing up her newfound nerves Daisy let her fret and continued to talk to Marlene about her summer plans which mostly revolved around going to visit Pierre who would be going back to France with his parents for the season. But the nerves must’ve gotten the better of Lily as she spoke, muttering mid conversation, ‘god I hope they win today.’
‘Well I’m sure you can cheer James up if not eh Lil?’ Daisy asked, smiling sympathetically at Marlene who thankfully didn’t seem too put out by the interruption.
‘Funny,’ Lily said, rolling her eyes.
‘Speaking of cheering up you seem in a better mood today,’ Alice said to Daisy.
‘Yeah, I take it you two are speaking again,’ Lily said, laughing as Daisy’s face became shocked, ‘don’t look at me like that you two are bloody see through.’
‘I guess,’ Daisy grumbled, embarrassed that she hadn’t realised how transparent she’d been. She glanced at Sirius who fortunately hadn’t heard even though he was sitting a row in front.
‘So go on, what was it about?’ Marlene asked, lowering her voice. Daisy looked between the girls and then sighed, ‘the attack. I… I had an argument…with Regulus.’
‘After the last meeting?’ Marlene prompted; Daisy nodded.
‘Yeah, he basically said he was going to do something else but I didn’t tell anyone,’ Daisy admitted, looking worriedly at Lily who frowned as she asked, ‘why not?’
‘Because I thought I could handle it myself,’ Daisy explained, ‘I thought I’d have time and I didn’t want to upset-’
‘Sirius,’ Lily finished. Again Daisy nodded, glancing back to where Sirius was sitting, laughing along with something Remus had said. He must’ve felt her looking as his head turned and he offered her a smile which she returned hoping he wouldn’t see through her as her friends did. When he turned away she huddled closer to ensure he didn’t hear as she said, ‘yeah but he got annoyed about me keeping secrets which I understand. I mean it was my fault.’
‘Dais it wasn’t your fault,’ Lily protested.
‘Lils right if it’s anyone’s it’s theirs,’ Alice agreed.
‘But-’
‘Listen it wasn’t your fault. It’s theirs. No one else’s,’ Lily said firmly, ‘you’ve not been worried about this have you?’
‘A little,’ Daisy admitted, though as Lily placed a reassuring hand on her thigh Daisy’s lip quivered making her sister sigh as she said, ‘oh Dais you should’ve said!’
‘You’ve had enough to deal with,’ Daisy mumbled, feeling embarrassed about going to pieces especially considering everything was fine now. Lily pulled her in for a hug and muttered, ‘yeah and I still want to know when my sister is upset! Sirius is right we need to be there for one another no matter what. No more secrets.’
‘No more secrets,’ Daisy agreed, pulling out of the hug to look at her sister though as she did she realised that there was still something she was keeping back so she added, ‘there’s something else I’ve not told you.’
‘What?’ Lily asked worriedly.
‘I don’t want to go home this summer,’ Daisy said hurriedly, figuring if she didn’t get it out now she never would but her jumble words didn’t seem to land, her sister’s brow furrowed until she said, ‘to our house.’
‘Oh,’ Lily said sadly, looking out towards the field where the teams were now appearing, coming into the arena as they started to warm up. Sensing this was a conversation just for the two of them Marlene and Alice looked away quickly, immersing themselves in their own conversation to signal they were no longer listening. Daisy felt her stomach flip flop and hurried to explain.
‘I just don’t think it’ll be the same, without them,’ Daisy said, trying to force the lump in her throat down, ‘and I don’t want to try and force it to. And I know I royally kicked off and you’re gonna be annoyed at me but that’s how I feel and I want you to understand-’
‘It’s fine,’ Lily said with a soft smile.
‘Really?’ Daisy asked incredulously.
‘Honestly I’ve been worrying about the same,’ Lily admitted, gnawing on her lip nervously, ‘I think it might feel…empty and I don’t want that.’
‘Me either, which is why I asked James if we could stay with the Potters,’ Daisy said, growing meek as Lily looked at her, ‘don’t be mad at them. I asked him and Sirius not to say anything.’
‘It’s alright,’ Lily said, ‘but what about Petunia?’
‘I’m sure she’ll be heartbroken to not see us,’ Daisy said sarcastically.
‘I mean it. We can't just not see her,’ Lily reasoned.
‘Well, we’ll have to go home at some point,’ Daisy shrugged, ‘we can see her then.’
‘Sounds good to me,’ Lily agreed.
✵✵✵
After Gryffindors house cup win the end of term came faster than ever and though she still wasn't enjoying exams Daisy had to admit she was faring better now that she and Sirius were on speaking terms. In fact the group all seemed to be in agreement not to dwell on the past few weeks and celebrate the end of term. Though admittedly putting the attack and the loss of the club behind them wasn't exactly easy given every man and his dog had questions for them when Dumbledore had made a formal announcement all ‘unapproved school clubs would henceforth be disbanded with immediate effect.’ Still they managed to wangle a few relaxing days before they were shipped off home with Daisy, Sirius, James and Lily headed to the Potter’s mansion.
And though she knew it was better than going back to a big empty house Daisy couldn't help but feel apprehensive as their car weaved through the narrow lanes of the English countryside. Of course her apprehension didn't have chance to take root given they had barely stepped foot out of the car before Euphemia appeared at the front door and herded them in, her excitement palpable as she said, ‘there you are! I thought you were never going to get here! Hello darling. Lily dear.’
‘Hi Mum,’ James said, placing a kiss on her cheek as he walked in the house, pulling Lily in by the hand leaving Daisy and Sirius in the firing line for affection.
‘Sirius! Oh my gosh haven’t you gotten tall!’ she cooed, giving him a brief hug before she turned on Daisy and said, ‘Daisy, so lovely to see you.’
‘Thanks for having us Euphemia,’ Daisy smiled.
‘Oh it’s no bother you know that. Now leave your stuff here because I’ve got dinner waiting,’ she said gesturing for them to dump their bags by the front door where house elves were already bringing their trunks in, waiting for instruction of where to take them, ‘girls you’ll be back in the annexe and boys your regular rooms. And I thought we could eat out on the back patio whilst it’s still nice out, what do you think?’
‘Sounds good. I’m starving,’ James said.
‘Me too,’ Sirius agreed.
‘Well hurry up,’ Euphemia said, beckoning into the drawing room so they could head out towards the patio, ‘I left your father alone with a bowl of bread and the longer we stand around chatting the more chance there’ll be nothing left.’
‘Coming,’ James chuckled, pulling Lily with him as he followed his mother through the double doors, though as Daisy went to follow them she felt a hand on her elbow pulling her back until she was face to face with Sirius who leaned in and kissed her, taking her off guard.
‘What was that for?’ she giggled as he pulled back.
‘Nothing,’ he grinned, ‘I just have a feeling this might be the last minute we get alone all summer.’
‘Oh stop it,’ she said, rolling her eyes.
‘I mean it. Euphemia likes having guests you know,’ Sirius smirked pulling her closer.
‘Yeah and she’s got James’ new girlfriend to fawn over, remember? Me and you will simply blend into the background,’ Daisy giggled wondering just how Lily was going to take to being harassed by two Potters this holiday.
‘Like we were never here,’ Sirius joked though his voice got softer as he said, ‘I’m glad you are though.’
‘Me too,’ she smiled, ‘now come on. I’m starving.’
