What About The Kens?
I'm already seeing guys complain about the Barbie movie end, how they wanted Kens to be equal in Barbieland but were only given a small part on the Cabinet.
That's the point.
You're meant to feel bad for the Kens. Believe me, women aren't partying over the 'Returns to Matriarch' ending. Some will be, but the ones who also clocked the meaning behind it won't. Most women will also feel bad for Kens. Because it's an exact parallel to how women are treated in reality.
Men, you're meant to be upset. You're meant to question it. Because you're meant to feel it, and feel what that is like, so you can finally understand women. You're upset at seeing it in a movie, now imagine living it in reality. That's being a woman.
Kens were shit on so you could feel what it was like for women this entire time. Kens were being used as a placement so you could see yourself in a woman's shoes. A world dominated by the opposite sex. When Ken leaves, and sees male presidents (All men) for the first time, men being doctors and lawyers, etc, realising he is more than just a prop for Barbie, that was on purpose. Because that is the feeling that Barbie gave to women. It's why you cheer for him at first before he goes a little overboard.
It's exactly why the real world was an exaggerated Partriarchy and Barbieland an exaggerated Matriarchy. Neither wins. Neither is equal. None of them change for the better. It's why you should want women in the real world to be respected, and Kens in Barbieland to be respected.
The thing is, women also didn't win. Not in the real world. In Barbieland, yes, but not anywhere else. The real world didn't change. But you didn't notice, did you? That Gloria (The mother that helped Barbie) also didn't get a position on the Mattel board? It was still all men? Her idea was ignored until it made a profit, and the men will likely get the credit? She'll still just be the receptionist? The women representing the real world didn't get anymore opportunities, neither did the men in Barbieland.
I was hoping that Gloria would be offered a position on the board, and that the Barbie Cabinet would introduce another entire Cabinet to represent the Kens, but neither happened. They're complete mirrors.
But which one did you actually notice? Which did you actually care about? Now tell me again the ending was unfair. Because it was. For both parties. That's the point.
The difference is, Barbieland is fictional. You will walk out of the theatre with the reassurance that at least it's not real. Women won't. Women can't. Companies not giving women equal opportunities or voices isn't fictional, and that was just one example. There are no women presidents (USA at least) for us to go look at in the real world. We don't have somewhere to go to realise it could be different for us like Ken did. Barbie and make believe is all we had when we were kids, or even now.
You're supposed to be mad, just not at the movie.

i’d briefly like to talk about the “it was fine” dialogue option that happens the morning after gale’s Last Night Alive scene in act ii and about the fandom's general reaction to it.
gale is a character who evidently enjoys the occasional teasing. taking the piss out of your partner every once in a while can certainly be a way of showing affection. however, it is important to consider the context of the situation: what is at stake for him and his current emotional state, as well as what exactly had transpired between the two of them prior to said conversation.
Tumblr media
gale: forgive me. these were already trying times before elminster delivered his missive. now, for me at least, they are potentially end times.
after he and tav had spent the night together and confessed their love to each other, gale is once again showing himself utterly vulnerable and is carefully asking them for reassurance.
Tumblr media
gale: [..] i hope that night meant as much to you as it did to me.
Tumblr media
gale: but you - you led me away from the edge.
gale: without your words, your touch... i fear i would have sought purpose and solace in that void. you reminded me what living can feel like.
he wants to check in with them, after both of them have shared something tender and very intimate, something he might even consider life-altering.
Tumblr media
gale: we didn't just make love. we bonded, body and soul. i got lost in you.
it’s not even about gale “not being able to read social cues” and “not recognizing the fact that it was meant in jest.” in fact, i’d argue it is a rather tone-deaf, inconsiderate response and just genuinely a REALLY BAD TIME to joke at your partner's expense when they are actively baring their feelings to you and are asking you for reassurance.
i have seen people write off his reaction as “unwarranted” or “overtly dramatic” but in my humble opinion, it is pretty understandable given the nature of their conversation and what he is asking of them. it's also sad how there seems to be a general pattern of gale's emotions and boundaries getting played off as a joke, while other companions get shown the courtesy of thorough analysis/understanding. he is proud of his skill as a lover and the fact that he was able to bring them pleasure, yet his inquiry is less about him wanting tav to stroke his ego and more about him, once again, asking if you indeed share the same feelings for each other… after the emotional high has now passed.
gale has an ever-present need for clarity in his relationships, very likely due to the fact that this was something he couldn’t request of mystra. he might appear more sensitive in that regard compared to the other companions. he doesn’t want to take himself too seriously, but this still often clashes with his general feeling of inadequacy. where he is able to take criticism as long as it isn’t related to his performance, overall prowess and usefulness.
yes, his response is passive-aggressive and yes, he IS obviously hurt by what tav said. yet merely repeating “it was fine” in response to a heartfelt, genuine question could’ve as well been interpreted in that manner. if tav does clarify that they have only been joking, he apologizes to them instead. otherwise his dialogue remains the same, albeit said in a more embarrassed & awkward tone.
gale is a character who is dealing with deep-rooted self-worth issues and yet that doesn’t mean that he wants to be handled with kid gloves, far from it. he craves a relationship in which his emotional needs are recognized, respected and cared for, where he can be unabashedly open and vulnerable without facing ridicule nor pity for it. and he is more than willing to give the same in return.
also y’know — there is a time and a place.

Ventress is really enjoying being the master for once huh. she finds an untrained clueless young force sensitive and immediately goes full Yoda mode with the balance-stuff-on-your-head test and accompanying cryptic commentary
and it's even funnier when you remember that qui gon in TPM checked anakin's midichlorians with basically a covid rapid test

Invader Zim episode where Zim and Dib acquire the ability to transmit their own pain to each other. This forces them to repeatedly begrudgingly save each other from being gruesomely injured (often by their own death traps they set up for each other) just so they won't have to feel it, but also sometimes one of them will just slam their hand with a car door or something just to make the other person feel it. At one point Dib tells Zim to stop yelling all the time because it's making his throat sore.
At the end of the episode one of them suffers some crushing humiliation which makes them realize they can also feel each other's emotional pain.
"I'm fine."
"No, you're not."
"Oh, you can feel that too?"
"I guess so."
"Wait, why do I suddenly feel like... almost gleeful now?"
"( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)"

It's okay to give a bit more if someone you care for, especially in your family/friends, is in need (e.g. a bad period or something), but after this period ends, it's good to go back to a balanced give/take relationship. It's also in their wellbeing to start to care again for themselves/live as they want. Stop giving too much when the other doesn't need that anymore/doesn't give you back as much. Focus on giving back to yourself first.

Empathy is almost always part of the answer.
Shift sides and state their case; if only to yourself. Try and feel their fear. Because it’s always there, just as yours is, though you’ll rarely find it on your first attempt.
Very few are truly evil. The majority are just lost, just as you are.
So, just for today, surrender to their perspective. Regardless of your outrage.
We must hope that somewhere on the other side, someone else is quietly trying to see things from your point of view.
Find them.

Your timeline really highlight how put aside Orin is :( She deserved so much better
I like Orin a lot as a character and if you mean she deserved better karmically, I agree with you wholeheartedly--but if you mean she deserved better from the story, unfortunately, I don't agree with that.
I believe her role in the story is to be tragic and the story accomplishes that very effectively.
What you learn from talking to her and to Sarevok, and the writing left behind by and about her, all points to a person who never had a chance at a happy ending. She doesn't show up in the timeline very much because she doesn't do very much. She doesn't do very much because she was set up to fail by the people in her life.
We can glean all of that information from the existing material and we can have an emotional reaction to it, and that's what makes her such a fascinating and sympathetic character.
One of the lessons that Baldur's Gate 3 is trying to teach us is that no one is pure evil or pure good and a large part of what pushes people towards evil is a lack of support from positive relationships or community. Orin is in the story to be an example of someone who never stood a chance of being good because she didn't have any positive support. At the very end if you tell her that she's been lied to by her family and her god, she gets really upset about it and before she has an opportunity to exert agency for herself Bhaal takes control of her and forces her to fight you.
And it's extra tragic because she's the one who saved Durge, purely by accident, by betraying them. Withers explains that the only reason he's able to save Durge when Bhaal kills them is because they were separated from Bhaal's control by unreplicable circumstances long enough to develop their own autonomous personality. That's not an opportunity Orin ever got or was ever going to get and that's why Orin is Durge's tragic mirror. This kind of story needs a tragic mirror and Orin does her duty effectively and well.
If you disagree with me I'm sorry and I hope you're able to find fanfic out there that saves her in a way that's satisfying to you.
