Billboard USA Exclusion Zone Episode 21 (01/13/2024)

Now that all the Christmas stuff is gone, what do we have to replace all of the Christmas songs? Well seems like we are still stuck with what 2023 had to offered. Regional Mexican, J-Pop, old songs that went viral on TikTok, and some legacy songs just debuted. And yet looking at the chart reset I think showed a bigger picture that I will get to on my blog, stay tuned. Enough stalling let's get into these meaty lists of new arrival

You know the year hasn't even started yet and we might have a contender for the worst song of the year. Like imagine if Fleeting Lullaby by Ado was remixed by a B-tier boyband and the productions sounded like the backwash of Gen 3 boyband group sound...you get this.

51. "Rompe La Dompe" by Peso Pluma, Junior H, Oscar Maydon

This is probably the most well produced Peso Pluma song in corridos scene. I love how chill the song is. Definitely needed after...that car crash the size of opening lap of Belgian GP in 1998 proportion.

64. "Wherever u r" by UMI ft. V from BTS

Seems like V beside making solid RnB album, also want to platform small RnB artist as well. And it's a great song to boot as well. I'm instantly hooked by UMI's voice with the melodic guitar, spacious production, and just immaculate atmosphere which is perfect for the sort of cut about long distance longing. I do think the percussion is a bit loud. But hey it's still a high recommendation

Seems like the train of regional Mexican sound is still rolling because we have a newcomer by the name of Xavi. He's not Spanish by the way he's from Arizona. I feel like the reason why I've been positive with Xavi because in terms of corridos tumbados, his sounds are very full and competently produced for once. I love the horn lines here the most because it's kinda like all over the place.

TikTok strikes again and this time it might be their best find yet. Coming from the Saltburn ending where Barry Keoghan "dancing" to this song, we have quite possible the reason why Future Nostalgia existed in the first place. I'm glad that Americans are listening to this two decades later. The lush nu-disco production that didn't aged a day with the liquid guitar, tight bass, and the strings. Every seconds of this song is just tight and controlled which could be attributed to Gregg Alexander aka the bald guy with the bucket hat from New Radicals. The guitar solo is just an icing on the cake on otherwise fantastic tune.

Never thought I would hear a song from India like this to be honest. But hey it's a nice surprised to hear this type of sounds in other languages that I am not familiar with.

170. "Overdrive" by Ofenbach ft. Norma Jean Martine

It's kinda cool how dance genre has probably its stronger year in 2023. This is the first one I'm listening to this year and yeah the streak keep on going here. Never have I heard more beautiful piano house since...shit probably Hold My Hand.

172. "Alucin" by Eugenio Esquivel X Grupo Marca Registrada X Sebastian Esquivel

This is probably the best "Edm mixed with regional mexican" song I've heard. Though when your competition is a song by Fuerza Regida featuring Marshmello...yeah

Not gonna lie, the sound of DJ Snake just didn't hold up so well with time. This song in 2024 sounds so empty and devoid of anything interesting.

Meanwhile this song is timeless and could be played at any time where you are feeling down or just sick of the bullshit get thrown at you.

Assessment3

My final assessment chose the topic of option 4, and I used two tracks to complete this selection.

Initial idea

My idea was to create a chill rnb type of beat and the track should fit a rainy vibe and the scene that came out of my mind was a girl sitting alone in a café reading a novel while this song was playing in the background. In terms of creative techniques With this aim, I have used jazz guitar to play extended chords and their arpeggio with a very soft tone with ambience reverb (3.84s decay time). In order to approach the sound that I wanted, I use an eq low pass filter around 4500 Hz to make it sounds even warmer. For the drums section, I wanted the hihat pattern to sound like sea wave (fade in and out) and for the kick and snare I used a classic groove rhythm. And probably layered some keys and pad together to give unique vibe.

I have used jazz guitar, texture soundscape preset in omnisphere, Rhodes and Celeste in keyscape, rainy texture sample, drums oneshot samples that are suitable for rnb, some percussion loops and transition samples from splice.

artistic vision

Inspired by the song “Pretty” by Col3trane ft. Mahalia, I used similar drum patterns and arrangement but with my own settle changes. The drums and instrumental in this song are just so fascinating and instantly make the audience fall into the vibe.

Technical or other problems are I worried about

While I was layering different keys and pads together, I worried about this might cause phase issues and what I did to address this was using eq to cut some frequency to leave spaces for the main jazz guitar and Rhodes.

The second songs

Initial idea and artistic vision

My inspiration came from the painting "Ophelia" by the nineteenth-century English painter John Everett Millais. This is a painting depicting a character in the play Hamlet, who cannot accept Hamlet's betrayal and chooses to die after the death of her father. In the painting, her death is beautiful. Ophelia is lying in the water, surrounded by lush vegetation, and the picture shows an "abnormal" beauty. When I first saw this painting, I was attracted by the contrast presented in the picture, so the inspiration for this piece comes from this 19th-century painting.

When I first wrote this piece, I wanted to have a sad vibe. The piece can be divided into four main parts, and I tried to use a third-person perspective to describe the first part of the piece. It is quiet, lonely and desperate, just like Ophelia lying in a pool of water, and it was also my intuitive feeling when I first saw this painting. The second part is still a third perspective, but I tried to make the song a little lighter to reflect the youthful life that flows through the flowers and vegetation with the water. In addition, there is another layer of implication. I want to describe what I feel when watching the painting. "abnormal" beauty.

As the song progressed, in the third part, I began to try to bring myself into the role of Ophelia. Here I tried the first-person perspective. I want to use this paragraph to describe my short life in Ophelia’s memories. Also, I tried very light drumming to try to describe what it was like to face the world when Ophelia's life was coming to an end. At the end of the story, that is, the fourth part, calm was restored, and the third-person perspective was returned. Ophelia was still lying quietly and gracefully in the water.

In terms of creative techniques

My idea was to create an emotional track accomplished by piano, strings and drums. With this aim, I have used piano to play 6543 chord progression because in my opinion, I believe this is one of the saddest progressions that I know. The string part was very simple laid out because I want them to be relatively settle and leave space for the main piano and vocals. After the first chorus, I introduced the cello to give more the sense of sadness and loneliness. I made the snare and rim to be quite space out by using reverb to fit into the vibe more.

I have used Cinematic LA C7 in keyscape for the main piano and Frozen Piano Dreams in Omnisphere to play the chords with low velocity (just to add more texture and width). I also used Stone Mill Tuned Noise in Omnisphere as the arp in the second chorus. All strings were from the free version of BBC Symphony Orchestra.

This one I used the frozen piano dreams preset and then played chords with low velocity for adding some warmth and width

To reflect

Music art is a special aesthetic culture. In the creation of these two pieces and the study of music digital software this semester, I found that music art can directly reach people's hearts through a special charm. In the process of music art aesthetic experience and self-creation, my association and imagination have been greatly improved. The art of music is not only to simulate the sounds in nature, but also to arouse the audience's complex emotions in their own life experience by ordering the sounds in regular order, forming a rhythmic and aesthetically pleasing infinite free space. The process of creation is also a process of observing life. It also makes me learn to observe more carefully what is happening around me to abstract things and use different instruments to assist me in expressing this deliberate expression. mood.

This week seems to be pretty busier that one meets the eye. Yes we have some shakeups especially in the top 10 with Idol by Yoasobi surged so high. But, these debuts are just all over the place. Well it's gonna be a blast anyways so let's get to this!

4. "un x100to" by Grupo Frontera X Bad Bunny

You know since the regional Mexican sound is the biggest musical moment of 2023, I think I will make my stance on the broader genre of Regional Mexican sound. I get the appeal of these type of songs. Yeah it's ramshackled and the mix can be very live version of itself. But, the composition and the instrumentals here reminded me a lot of dangdut or koplo which is the Regional sound of my country. That said, I prefer the accordion one rather than the brass and acoustic bass that Peso Pluma helped popularized.

So apparently this guy is a tiktoker who is making folk pop that wanted to get Hozier to be on this song. All I can say right now is that he's definitely the poor man's Bon Iver with lyrics leftover from Father John Misty's b-side

28. "Chemical" by Post Malone

This is actually quite decent. But, this song is sounded like Fine Line rejects with a bit more inspiration from Tears for Fears.

72. "Princess Diana" by Ice Spice ft. Nicki Minaj

I did listened to Ice Spice debut EP and this is handly the worst song on the album. Getting Nicki Minaj isn't helping this generic ass beat to work y'know. Also I'm kinda mad that In Ha Mood didn't get pushed hard enough.

84. "美しい鰭" by SPITZ

Now we are talking about a veteran alternative rock band getting their first hit ever on the chart. This song is so likeable this is basically why I like J-Pop more that anything else sometimes. The guitar solo is just immaculate as does the production which is I would describe as "RHCP if they chose jazz influence than rap influence".

91. "Peaches" by Jack Black

I will give the Super Mario Bros movie a 7/10 it's a great popcorn movie.

98. "Wish You The Best" by Lewis Capaldi

See this song is the prime example as to why I don't like Lewis Capaldi's writing. There's not enough detail to justify this guy's longing for someone's that he used to love. Glimpse of Us this is not.

138. "El Tonto" by Lola Indigo & Quevedo

I think I can see the differences between Spanish reggaeton and LATAM reggaeton. The main one is the differences in how it's produced. The Spanish one seems to have other influences such as the dance scene in Europe. So that's why you have those sfx sprinkle throughout it.

151. "El Tsurito" by Junior H X Gabito Ballesteros X Peso Pluma

....Huh?????? Why does this sounds like DistantCry made this beat???

157. "See You Again" by Tyler, The Creator ft. Kali Uchis

I'm so glad this song became a viral hit because this is probably one of his best singles ever. The production here has influenced RnB world till this day with the trumpet, the strings, and that heavy hard hitting beat drop. Kali Uchis' breakout performance, the longing from Tyler about his crush is just breathtaking. This is truly one of the best songs of 2017.

170. "Cruel Summer" by Taylor Swift

[Insert the "this should've been a singles" jokes here]. But like can you blame Swifties in this? This song is too good for being a deepcut. The production is probably one of Jack Antonoff's best and yeah it's a great song.

181. "Fragil" by Yahritza y Su Esencia X Grupo Frontera

Remember the trio that gotten viral for their song? Yeah they're back with Grupo Frontera with probably the weakest accordion Regional Mexican song so far.

188. "Seu Brilho Sumiu" by Israel X Rodolffo & Mari Fernandez

Now for Brazilian sound...yeah I don't really get it. I think the percussion is not my thing in general here.

189. "Moonlight" by Kali Uchis

Speaking of Kali Uchis. If the vocals were mixed a bit better this could've been a sexy jam. Instead it's just a good one.

I highly recommend everyone to listen to these songs.
