Though she was known for hosting tea parties and luncheons for an eclectic troupe of friends on any given afternoon, the knock at the door that day came as a surprise. The sharply dressed creature, its waistcoat buttons glinting and its long ears held at a jaunty angle, bowed and pantomimed clearly enough to explain it was there for tea. Though they shared no spoken language in common, the two found shared interest enough in a pot of tea and a few day-old scones much improved by a touch of jam, which have always been one of the more stable foundations for friendship in any case.

I poured a glass for myself, with noisette liqueur and hazelnut chips. The smell is warm and intoxicating, like that of a woodpile in the late autumn sun. Guillaume ate his religieuse with careful enjoyment, dabbing the crumbs from the plate with a moistened forefinger.
“In that case, the things I've believed all my life – about sin and redemption and the mortification of the body – you'd say none of those things mean anything, wouldn't you?”
I smiled at his seriousness. “I'd say you've been talking to Armande,” I said gently. “And I'd also say that you and she are entitled to your beliefs. As long as they make you happy.”
“Oh.” He watched me warily, as if I were about to sprout horns. “And what – if it isn't an impertinent question – what do you believe?”
Magic-carpet rides, rune magic, Ali Baba and visions of the Holy Mother, astral travel and the future in the dregs of a glass of red wine...
Florida? Disneyland? The Everglades? What about it, chérie? What about it, hein?
Buddha. Frodo's journey into Mordor. The transubstantiation of the sacrament. Dorothy and Toto. The Easter Bunny. Space Aliens. The Thing in the closet. The Resurrection and the Life at the turn of a card...I've believed them all at one time or another. Or pretended to. Or pretended not to.
Whatever you like, Mother. Whatever makes you happy.
And now? What do I believe right now?
“I believe that being happy is the only important thing,” I told him at last.
Happiness. Simple as a glass of chocolate or tortuous as the heart. Bitter. Sweet. Alive.

Prompt: turn this prompt into the concept for a movie: At the age of 16 all witches are assigned a familiar. You are excited for yours as you see your friends turn 16 and get theirs. Cats, Crows, spiders. You are devastated to find out that out your 16th birthday, your familiar is a 27 year old hipster named Frank. (credit to @writing-prompt-s)
Title: Familiar Problems
Tagline: Magic doesn't discriminate… unfortunately
Logline: At 16, every witch receives a familiar – a magical creature to aid and bond with. Unfortunately, for Willow, a spunky and enthusiastic witch, her 16th birthday surprise is Frank, a sarcastic, flannel-clad 27-year-old hipster with zero magical ability.
Characters:
Willow "Willa" Thorne: A bubbly and headstrong 16-year-old witch who dreams of mastering spells and having epic magical adventures. Her enthusiasm is tested by her unexpected familiar.
Frank: A cynical and perpetually underemployed 27-year-old hipster barista. He's inexplicably chosen as Willa's familiar, much to his (and her) dismay. While lacking magical powers, he possesses a surprising amount of street smarts and knowledge of obscure pop culture references.
Ms. Hawthorne: Willa's wise and patient grandmother, also a powerful witch. She supports Willa and offers guidance on working with her unconventional familiar.
Tiffany and Beatrice: Willa's best friends and fellow witches. Tiffany has a sleek black cat familiar named Midnight, while Beatrice boasts a mischievous spider familiar named Arachne. They initially mock Willa for her "useless" familiar.
Plot:
Willa eagerly awaits her 16th birthday, the day every young witch receives their familiar. She imagines a majestic creature – a powerful owl, a loyal dog, or a mystical raven – to assist her in her magical studies and future adventures. Her friends boast about their familiars – Tiffany's sleek black cat and Beatrice's wisecracking spider – further amping up Willa's excitement.
On her birthday, surrounded by family and friends, Willa performs the ritual to summon her familiar. A bright light fills the room, then fades, revealing a bewildered Frank, clad in skinny jeans and a faded band t-shirt, holding a spilled latte.
Willa is devastated. Frank is the antithesis of the magical creature she envisioned. He offers no magical abilities and spends most of his time reading obscure poetry books and lamenting the decline of vinyl records. Her friends ridicule her, and even Ms. Hawthorne seems unsure how to handle the situation.
Determined to make the best of it, Willa and Frank embark on a series of training exercises. While Frank lacks magic, he uses his knowledge of history and pop culture to decipher ancient spells and devise unexpected solutions to magical problems. He inadvertently becomes a source of strength, teaching Willa the importance of resourcefulness and creative thinking.
The climax involves a confrontation with a malevolent magical entity that threatens the town. Willa, drawing upon her own power and Frank's unconventional strategies, defeats the creature, proving that a familiar doesn't have to be traditional to be effective.
Themes:
Embracing the unexpected.
True friendship transcends appearances and abilities.
Thinking outside the box to solve problems.
The importance of self-confidence and resourcefulness.
Humor:
The stark contrast between Willa's youthful enthusiasm and Frank's jaded hipster attitude.
Frank's utter confusion and sarcastic commentary on the magical world.
Situational humor arising from Frank's attempts to assist Willa with his non-magical skills.

On Earth, Where There Are No Angels by Tamsin Lillywhite
(Part 1 of a Duology)
Mini blurb
Nobody tells you how to recover from losing a friend, who you've lost from growing up and growing apart. And nobody tells you how you're meant to reconnect when they come back to you, or if you should. Can you get back to what you once had? A close friendship so nourishing, so close, like pure love.
Or did you grow apart for a reason.
On Earth, Where There Are No Angels is one part of a place-based magic realism duology that follows a somewhat non-chronological format. It centres on the dramatic and romantic tensions between old and new friends, with a backdrop of angelic intrigue via three main protagonists; Briellen, an archangel, Hazel, an ex-angel hunter, and Zeke, an angel hater.

Summary: Virtual Author Talk with Cassandra Clare at San Anselmo Public Library (23/08/23)
Cassie wrote her first “novel” when she was 12 on a Mac computer, the infamous The Beautiful Cassandra that she regularly teases to us. She got into writing fiction professionally full-time after leaving her journalism job in 2006.
Finishing City of Bones took about 3-4 years because it was her first novel. Holly Black was the one who hooked her up with her first agent who then got the book published, which was a really new experience. She said that the publishing process was initially surprising to her because of how crazily long it takes to get a single book published.
Cassie acknowledges that City of Bones is starkly “different” from the rest of all her books in colour and voice, because of how experimental the novel writing process was for her. She said she thinks she’s evolved a lot as a writer since then.
She aims for psychological realism in her books even though it’s fantasy. She tries to see each character as a fully-formed person who can exist outside of the immediate plot. She creates worksheets to write her characters.
She also believes it’s necessary to let your main characters make bad mistakes – she cites Matthew as a prominent example i.e. someone highly reactive to their own mistakes. Matthew is defined by his regret and his need to fix his mistakes. She thinks Matthew is one of the most relatable characters because of this.
She’s very drawn to the found family trope because of how much she moved around as a kid – the stability and love of a found family is something she’s worked to build her whole life. She emphasizes the importance of friendship and its different forms in life.
Cassie cites Magnus as the character who turned out most differently than she had initially planned – she hadn’t originally anticipated how significant Magnus would be in the wider scheme of the series.
Doing The Last Hours was, at least a little, in response to people’s excitement about The Family Tree back in 2013.
Her advice for writing fantasy worlds is to create a flexible and expansive magic system so it can grow with you as a writer. She also emphasizes letting your favorite characters make poor decisions – your characters determine the plot and not the other way around.
Cassie strikes a balance between planning worldbuilding details beforehand and then spontaneously adding in new things in the writing process. The Scholomance is an example of something new that was added later in the TSC writing chronology.
She decided that Sword Catcher had to be in the adult publishing category because when she initially developed the characters, they just appeared as people in their twenties. With TSC, the characters had just appeared to her as teenagers then. Writing characters in these different life stages was interesting and challenging.
Sword Catcher is the first in a duology, but she’d like it to be four books if it’s successful.
Cassie has always wanted to write Shadowhunters in the Roaring ‘20s but she has no idea what the plot would possibly be.
She doesn’t read TSC fanfiction, but her husband has informed her of a popular Magnus X BTS fanfiction on AO3. She stays away from fanfiction, but she is very invested in the fanart of her works. Her favorite artist is, of course, Cassandra Jean, and she also loves Charlie Bowater.
She loves writing with Holly Black and probably would only do more Middle Grade writing with her.
She is very much anti-censorship and anti-banning books, especially because of the form it takes in the US (aka, censorsing books dealing with issues affecting the BIPOC and queer communities).
She doesn’t believe they’ll do another TMI adaptation in any form, even though she doesn’t believe the TMI books’ story was ever truly told. She hopes, one day, that TID can get made as it’s the most adaptable series in her catalogue for logistical reasons.
If she couldn’t be a fiction writer, her dream job would be a travel writer. She intensely loves traveling and making her characters travel as well.
Her favorite author of all time is Dorothy Dunnett. She thinks you should check out The Queen’s Thief by Megan Whaler Turner (I agree). And she’s currently reading Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak (I really enjoyed this one).

They had never once spoken in all the years of frequenting the same fallen log out behind the playground. After graduation, they still encountered each other there, dolls and toy swords traded for paperbacks and handheld games, themselves replaced by cell phones and toolboxes. Through years of silence and knowing one seat in the world would always be saved for them alone, they forged something beyond the word "friendship," beyond any words at all.

hi loves
a wee announcement/bit of reflection below the cut
nothing heavy, just some thoughts & updates
First of all, I want to say I love this fandom so much. Truly I do. It has carried me though possibly the hardest, loneliest year of my life (and this ol' girl has been though some dark times). I've made friendships here that I hope to cherish for the rest of my life.
I came into fanfiction in October of last year, after not writing anything substantial for almost a decade. My dear friend at the time said she was looking for a specific Eddie Munson story, so I wrote it for her. I wrote it in first person because I didn't even understand how "reader perspective" was a thing, that's how wet behind the ears I was to this world. My friend, on the other hand, is a well-versed fic reader, and I distinctly remember messaging her like, "okay, what the hell is a Y/N??"
I spent that entire dark, cold winter writing and passing it to her in parts like notes in a classroom. The rush of getting back to something I loved so deeply after so much time away turned me into a monster. I lived and breathed that story. We sent endless messages back and forth every day about what each character would do next, imagining ourselves in that world, with Eddie. We made playlists, we cried. We screamed and giggled and kicked our feet when they finally kissed. We mourned the loss when it ended and moped around a bit before going back to read it all over again. Some 40k words and four months later I realized, holy shit, I think I write fanfiction now?
In a way, fanfiction saved my life. It brought me back to a part of myself I had buried, a part of me that worried it might never see the light of day again. It came crawling out of the ground, gasping for air like, "you better stretch your fingers bitch because I have a lot to say."
In April, I started posting here when the fandom was notably beginning to wane, but I was happy to see there were so many still going hard for our man. I kinda creeped in, like a little scuttling crab, and was grateful to find that a handful of you embraced me.
Long story short, I am NOT leaving, not at all. I know the tone is there, but that is not what this is, lmao. I will hopefully keep this blog for as long as you will have me. I plan to finish writing I'm on Fire and Death Becomes Us, as well as maybe another bit for gargoyle!Eddie, and nightmare!Eddie, but the other series I've started (or planned to start) will stay on hiatus for a while, possibly forever. I will continue to post blurbs and hc's and whatnot, but I won't be committing to any new series or long fics.
My masterlists will remain intact for the time being for those who want to enjoy what is there. That being said, The Nightmare Factory and Stop the World and Melt with You, might be taken down in the future only because I plan to re-work them into original stories. I have a second non-fandom blog in the works that is dedicated to monsters, nightmares, and magic realism, and I will let those who are interested know about it when the time comes.
Mostly, I wanted to let you know that, even if you notice some changes, I will continue to persist with "My 2 Joe's" delulu era, possibly until the earth swallows me up. I am no longer taking requests, but my asks will always be open for thots, blurbs, obsessions, etc. You know how much I love hearing from you.
That's all really. Perhaps this is simply one of those "end of year" thought dumps, but I also wanted to say a heartfelt Thank You to those who continue to support me, enjoy my work, and share it. My Ride or Die monsterfuckers and biker Eddie enthusiasts. My nightmare Eddie dreamers, my Twilight Zone Eddie pineapple heads. My gargoyle Eddie romantics who cheer on our Stone Boy, and my Hybrid Steve lovers who leave their windows open at night. My True Blood friends who appreciate a vampire Eddie who is nothing like Bill Compton. My darlings, my fellow rebel rousers and misfits, my friends.
This is a very symbiotic relationship, and I could not/would not do this without you ❤️

short books recs (under 200 pages)
1. Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa
This book follows Sentaro, who runs a dorayaki stall, and his friendship with Tokue, who makes killer sweet bean paste. It is a heart-warming and endearing story that brings you comfort. I love the friendship between Sentaro and Tokue, especially seeing how it develops. The ending feels a little rushed. I kind of wished it was longer. Kind of sad. I cried. 10/10 would read again.
2. Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
The Funiculi Funicula cafe provides a time-traveling service, and the book, divided into four parts, retells different characters' experiences traveling in time. I always associate time-traveling with angst and regret, and this book has just that. I love how each part explores different relationship dynamics, so the time-traveling experience varies for each character. Very heart-warming, but very emotional as well. Cried a lot. It's a series but you don't have to read other books. But if you want more info on the cafe and the characters' backstory, then I highly recommend reading the other books.
3. Heaven by Mieko Kawakami
This book revolves around two students, who are victims of bullying. Due to their shared struggle, a friendship blossoms between them. The depiction of bullying and its impacts is raw and authentic, the story providing the perspectives of both the victims and the perpetrators. It was a rage-inducing but thought-provoking read.
4. The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa
This book follows Nana the cat as he embarks on a road-trip with his owner, Satoru. Now, cats are my absolute weakness. I love cats. I WOULD DIE FOR THEM. Which is why reading this book was hard and painful. The writing is witty, since it is written from the perspective of a cat. The plot itself is kind of predictable, but it doesn't make it any less painful. Tldr; Shredded my heart into pieces. Cried so hard, I couldn't breathe.
5. Almond by Won-Pyung Sohn
The story follows the main character, Yunjae, who suffers from a rare condition called Alexithymia that essentially makes him unable to feel emotions. Due to that, he couldn't understand social cues so people shun him. The development of the story centers on the people Yunjae are going to meet, and how his relationship with these people develops. The ending felt a little anticlimactic, but I loved it nonetheless.
6. Eartheater by Dolores Reyes
The unnamed protagonist can locate missing people and find out their fate by eating dirt, so people seek her to know the fate of their missing loved ones. It was definitely an interesting read, with elements of magical realism in relation to the protagonist's ability. It is also an intriguing depiction of femicide, a reflection of a system that continuously fails women. I felt rage for the women failed by the system and the sufferings they had to endure at the hands of hateful men.
7. A House is a Body by Shruti Swamy
This book is a collection of short stories, which is a raw and authentic depiction of what it is like being human. I enjoyed certain stories, while some left me utterly confused. The narratives are enticing and poetic, so despite some stories not hitting that hard, I enjoyed the writing.
8. The Vegetarian by Han Kang
After having a bizarre dream, Yeong-Hye declares that she is turning vegetarian, and this sudden change concerned her family. I made the mistake of thinking that this book is merely a depiction of what it's like to be a vegetarian. HELL NO. It utterly deviates from my expectation. I could only describe the book as bizarre and spooky, in an unconventional way. It depicts the complexity of the human mind when the contraint of societal expectations is disregarded.

Falling In Love, Magical Realism, Dream is a Beautiful Fey Creature and Hob is a Handsome Bandit, Protective Hob Gadling, Protective Dream of the Endless, Historical References, Scotland, Middle English, Border Reiving, Adventure & Romance, Fairy Tale Retellings, Alternate Universe - Historical/Medieval/Fairy Tale, finding beauty in hard times, Oaths & Vows, Curses, Outdoor Sex, First Time Blowjobs, Frottage, Anal, Kissing in the Rain, really a lot of banging, Hair Braiding, Dirty Talk, Ballads, Duty, Friendship/Love, Mutual Pining, Miscommunication, Canon Echoes, Self-Denial, Repression, Tenderness, Confessions, Bathing/Washing, Strangers to Lovers, Lovers to Friends, Friends to Idiots, BAMF Hob Gadling, (absolutely fucking feral Hob Gadling), unhinged words and deeds, or: a man and a fey walk into a meadow and they're both equally insane
Dream woke himself shivering in the morning, limbs trembling, convulsive. He laughed in quiet delight, then had to tightly clench his jaw to stop his teeth from clattering together and waking Hob. For so long, he had been as cold as stone and tree. He’d forgotten what it was like to be warm enough to feel chilled by sleeping on the earth. He ran a hand over the bumps across his skin wonderingly. Gooseflesh, he thought. He reached out and pressed a hand into the damp moss. When he took it away, his fingers ached to the bone. His face ached too. He touched his wet hand to his cheek and discovered it was because he was smiling. Tender and fragile and alive.
A bit of ballad, a sunrise, a prologue.
[Read on AO3]
in truth I can’t believe I’m making this post — not because I didn’t think I would finish — but because I can’t believe I had the audacity to start in the first place. this has been so special to me. thank you to everyone who has read, commented, and sent asks!
I didn’t have a beta, but some of you very much filled the role of honing the fic and/or making me SO stoked to work on it, whether it was with essay-length insightful comments or insane amounts of art or incredible memes or gorgeous playlists or composed music!!! it wouldn’t have been nearly as fun or turned out this way without you. @that-banhus @fishfingersandscarves @fancy-rock-dove @mathomhouse-e @btwimkindagay @chubsonthemoon @tj-dragonblade and @mandolinearts
and @ anyone who ever reblogged a fic update post with unhinged tags…you made me beam at my phone like a dummy and i love you

Hi! Just read this fic (https://archiveofourown.org/works/33748141) and the post that inspired it (https://ladycrimsonandblack.tumblr.com/post/658164849325604866/brawltogethernow-brawltogethernow-tama-gives), and was wondering if you knew any other fics where Luffy is a Fae or a Changeling or just not really human? Thanks!
Hello ! Sorry this took us a while, as it seems there are very few fics that fall under that category, but here's what we've got for you:
The closest that comes to mind is :
Wild Wind At Dressrosa by khepiari (M)
[Mod notes: I am personally recommending this one as it is set in a world of magical realism. Luffy is not explicitly a magical creature, but there is certainly a certain magic and mystery surrounding him, which gives this story a whole air of surrealness and fairy tales.]
Doflamingo has troubles- to govern Dressrosa, collect taxes for the King, a womanizing Secretary, a stupid Brother, an angry Wife and a Rebelling Son who is romancing the Biggest Troublemaker- a Wayfaring Godless Curio-Shopkeeper, who is storming the calm streets of Dressrosa. Law's heart is hell-bent to unite with the Wild Wind called Monkey D Luffy- a tale of food, books, friendship and love.
The Moonwitch And His Dumb Werewolf (also) by khepiari (T)
A.U., Fantasy. Happy Ending. Three Part. LawLu (Switch Couple) When his village gets burned down and family captured by the bounty hunters, a young werewolf pup, Luffy, finds himself in the protection of a witch boy named Law and his father Corazon. As the war ravages, the magical creatures must unite to fight their biggest enemies; humans.
Perfect Completion by quackquackcey (E)
Water sprite Luffy curiously happens upon a gathering of vampires and falls at first sight for a certain golden-eyed vampire…but will his feelings be returned?~
A Crown of Flowers by @hyperbolicreverie (M)
The Wild is a mirror, a magic realm of possibility parallel to the mundane one, and people like Luffy, changelings who've made a devil's bargain for power, walk the line between worlds daily. When Luffy makes a mad dash to rescue his brother from certain death, he sets off a chain of events that makes the very foundations of that realm shudder. Soon, he's got several other people along for the ride, and the situation quickly spirals out of control. There's something the people in power aren't saying, and it might be the key to all the strange events that keep happening around them. Luffy just wants adventure and fun and freedom. Law just wants to be left alone to live his life. Kid wants to never be beholden to someone else again. And Ace just wants some goddamn agency for once. But there are other entities in the Wild with agendas of their own, and they don't care about what others want at all.
How To Snare A Life by xairylle (E)
Accidentally ensnaring a parasitic sexual demon and being his host wasn't exactly how Law wanted to end his night or his life for that matter. LawLu/LuLaw.
A Fleeting Moment (When the Sun Can Kiss the Moon) by purplehairedwonder (T)
Once upon a time, the Sun fell in love with the Moon.
[We also recommend checking the #Sun God Luffy tag for godly Luffy material.
And finally, not Fae Luffy, but we'd like to recommend Fae Law]
To Give You My Name by cosmicatta (M)
Trafalgar Law, last of the faes, had committed a fatal mistake 15 years ago: he had given Doflamingo his full name. Now, even after having escaped, the looming threat of his ownership still follows Law everyhwere he goes. He can only try to survive as a runaway, hoping to, someday, find a way to cut the invisible string tying him to his former captor. Until he meets Luffy. He’s just a regular human. But maybe that’s all Law needs.
And, ofc, the one you recommended:
waters of the wild by ladycrimsonandblack (T)
Even to his nakama, Luffy sometimes appears just a little bit too odd. (Or: Five times a Straw Hat notices something strange about Luffy, and the one time someone knows what's going on.)
We're also happy to tell you that your ask prompted some of our writers to give Fae Luffy a shot, so expect some new fics under that tag soon enough.
