The former Republican David French does a good job of explaining what keeps MAGA folks continuing to support Trump. It's all about the "culture" of MAGA and the sense of "belonging," combined with years of propaganda that have painted anyone even slightly on the left as being "bad" and "out to get" conservatives and their families.
And if we don't understand that, we won't know how to combat it. Here are some excerpts:
I live in Tennessee outside Nashville, a very deep-red part of America. According to a New York Times tool that calculates the political composition of a community, only 15 percent of my neighbors are Democrats. I’ve been living here in the heart of MAGA country since Donald Trump came down the escalator. This is the world of my friends, my neighbors and many members of my family. That is perhaps why, when I’m asked what things are like now, eight years into the Trump era, I have a ready answer: Everything is normal until, suddenly, it’s not. And unless we can understand what’s normal and what’s not, we can’t truly understand why Trumpism endures. [...] It’s no coincidence that one of the most enduring cultural symbols of Trump’s 2020 campaign was the boat parade. To form battle lines behind Trump, the one man they believe can save America from total destruction, thousands of supporters in several states got in their MasterCrafts and had giant open-air water parties. Or take the Trump rally, the signature event of this political era. If you follow the rallies via Twitter or mainstream newscasts, you see the anger, but you miss the fun. When I was writing for The Dispatch, one of the best pieces we published was a report by Andrew Egger in 2020 about the “Front Row Joes,” the Trump superfans who follow Trump from rally to rally the way some people used to follow the Grateful Dead. Egger described the Trump rally perfectly: “For enthusiasts, Trump rallies aren’t just a way to see a favorite politician up close. They are major life events: festive opportunities to get together with like-minded folks and just go crazy about America and all the winning the Trump administration’s doing.”
[See more below the cut]
[...] Why do none of your arguments against Trump penetrate this mind-set? The Trumpists have an easy answer: You’re horrible, and no one should listen to horrible people. Why were Trumpists so vulnerable to insane stolen-election theories? Because they know that you’re horrible and that horrible people are capable of anything, including stealing an election. At the same time, their own joy and camaraderie insulates them against external critiques that focus on their anger and cruelty. Such charges ring hollow to Trump supporters, who can see firsthand the internal friendliness and good cheer that they experience when they get together with one another. They don’t feel angry — at least not most of the time. They are good, likable people who’ve just been provoked by a distant and alien “left” that many of them have never meaningfully encountered firsthand. Indeed, while countless gallons of ink have been spilled analyzing the MAGA movement’s rage, far too little has been spilled discussing its joy. Once you understand both dynamics, however, so much about the present moment makes clearer sense, including the dynamics of the Republican primary. Ron DeSantis, for example, channels all the rage of Trumpism and none of the joy. With relentless, grim determination he fights the left with every tool of government at his disposal. But can he lead stadiums full of people in an awkward dance to “Y.MC.A.” by the Village People? Will he be the subject of countless over-the-top memes and posters celebrating him as some kind of godlike, muscular superhero? [...] Trump’s fans, by contrast, don’t understand the effects of [the MAGA] fury because they mainly experience the joy. For them, the MAGA community is kind and welcoming. For them, supporting Trump is fun. Moreover, the MAGA movement is heavily clustered in the South, and Southerners see themselves as the nicest people in America. It feels false to them to be called “mean” or “cruel.” Cruel? No chance. In their minds, they’re the same people they’ve always been — it’s just that they finally understand how bad you are. And by “you,” again, they often mean the caricatures of people they’ve never met. In fact, they often don’t even know about the excesses of the Trump movement. Many of them will never know that their progressive neighbors have faced threats and intimidation. And even when they do see the movement at its worst, they can’t quite believe it. So Jan. 6 was a false flag. Or it was a “fedsurrection.” It couldn’t have really been a violent attempt to overthrow the elected government, because they know these people, or people like them, and they’re mostly good folks. It had to be a mistake, or an exaggeration, or a trick or a few bad apples. The real crime was the stolen election. It’s the combination of anger and joy that makes the MAGA enthusiasm so hard to break but also limits its breadth.  [...] The battle and the booze cruise both give MAGA devotees a sense of belonging. They see a country that’s changing around them and they are uncertain about their place in it. But they know they have a place at a Trump rally, surrounded by others — overwhelmingly white, many evangelical — who feel the same way they do. [...] During the Trump years, I’ve received countless email messages from distraught readers that echo a similar theme: My father (or mother or uncle or cousin) is lost to MAGA. They can seem normal, but they’re not, at least not any longer. It’s hard for me to know what to say in response, but one thing is clear: You can’t replace something with nothing. And until we fully understand what that “something” is — and that it includes not only passionate anger but also very real joy and a deep sense of belonging — then our efforts to persuade are doomed to fail.

It-Girl Check: Carina Zavline
Hey girlies,
todays topic is a German It-Girl named Carina Zavline. For those who are not familiar with her at all – she’s a German It-Girl, Model and influencer.
Tumblr media
As you can see – she has almost 1 million followers on instagram and posts frequently about her vacations, model jobs and various beauty treatments. In fact, I first heard about lympathic drainage in one of her instagram stories and been a fan of this treatment ever since!
Her career started 2017 when she was a contestant in the German casting show Germany’s Next Topmodel.
While she got the best job (the Opel campagne) of the season and was handled as the shows favorite she had to leave the show right before the semifinal.
However, her career had just started. She landed a job as one of Guess ambassadors and did cooperations with many companies, mostly over her instagram profile.
Tumblr media
But who is Carina and what makes her so succesful?
Carina is the daughter of a Russian father and an Ukrainian mother. She was born in Dortmund, Germany and grew up in Hamburg before she moved to Munich to study there. After she finished her studies in Germany she moved to Paris and went to university there. She also studied acting at the Strasberg institute in LA.
Carina is fluent in six languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Ukrainian and Russian.
Before she started her career as an influencer/model she was a succesful dancer and competed international.
In conclusion: she’s not only beautiful but also smart, well spoken and knows how to move her body.
These attributes helped her to land maybe the most important deal of her life: Kilian Hennessy.
Tumblr media
Kilian Hennessy is a french billionaire and maybe you already guessed it – yes, his family business is the cognac brand Henessy.
He’s also the founder of the luxurious perfume brand Kilian.
There is not much about the two as a couple on the internet but they made it official relatively recently, in 2022, when he and Carina walked together over the red carpet at the Cannes film festivals.
What can we learn from Carina?
Well, one thing would be: make friends on your way up and keep them. Nourish your friendships and make sure you don’t betray your friends or throw them under the bus for a man because maybe, they introduce you to your future husband.
Carina frequently posts pictures with one of her girlfriends, Hofit Golan – an israeli model, producer and entrepreneur.
Tumblr media
Hofit once was called Israels Paris Hilton and she seems to have the same lavish lifestyle as the American It-Girl.
Private jets, dinners in fancy restaurants and of course expensive clothes seem to be Carinas new normal.
Carinas personal style is very sexy but never too much. She’s often spotted wearing luxurious brands like LV, Hermès and Guess.
Her favorite accessoires seem to bee her Van Cleef & Arpels jewellry and her Hermès bags.
She always looks elegant, mix and matching different colors and materials. Look at her instagram for outfit inspirations!
Her makeup and hairstyles are rather simple. She’s sporting a basic nude face with winged eyeliner and wears her long hair down and with soft natural waves.
For nails, she mostly wears them short and with a soft pinkish color.
Tumblr media
I do understand the hype about her and I really do think that she’s a great role model in terms of levelling up and hypergamy.
She shows that you should not only look good but also need to be intelligent in order to bag a high value man.
Beauty can open doors, yes – but if you’re dumb and can’t hold a basic conversation even the most beautiful face won’t help you.
Most of those high value men are smart and want a partner they can talk to, a partner who’s able to discuss literature, politics or even art.
Work on yourself, not only on your appearence but also on your inside. Be gentle, generous, friendly and curious. Just never stop learning.

"There is not a single European country in which the traditions of the old communal property have entirely disappeared. In certain areas, notably in the Ardennes and in the steep mountainous regions of Switzerland, where the peasants did not have to submit to the kind of oppression to which the German villagers were subjected after the wars of the Reformation, communal property is still widespread enough to constitute a considerable part of the territory.
In the Belgian Ardennes, the collective lands are composed of three parts: the woods, the freshly cleared ground [sart], and the pastures. They also often include arable land and quarries.
(...)
These customs clearly influence the moral character of individuals and greatly develop their spirit of solidarity, mutual kindness, and heartfelt friendliness. Thus it is customary to form voluntary work crews for the benefit of those who need work done. The latter need only to state their request by proceeding noisily through the village, calling out, “So-and-so needs something done! Who wants to help out?” Immediately a group appears and its members put their heads together to figure out who can best undertake the job, and the service is rendered. Such stories also come to us from the Queyras.
In all of Switzerland, two-thirds of the alpine prairies and forests belong to the communes, which also own peat bogs, reed marshes, and quarries, as well as fields, orchards, and vineyards. On many occasions when the co-proprietors of the commune have to work together, they feel as though they are at a festival rather than at work. The young men and women climb to the high mountain pastures, driving their herds before them to the harmonious clinking of the bells. At other times, the work is more difficult. While the snow still covers the ground, the woodsmen, armed with axes, cut the high pines in the communal forest. They strip the sawlogs and slide them down the avalanche corridors to the torrent that will carry them away in its bends and rapids.
Then there are the evening gatherings on winter nights, in which all are summoned to the home of whoever has the most urgent work, whether it is to shell corn, hull nuts, or make wedding gifts for a woman engaged to be married. During these gatherings, the work is a pleasure. The children want to participate, for everything is new to them. Instead of going to bed, they stay up with the adults and are given the best of the chestnuts roasting under the hot embers. When dreamtime is near, they listen to songs and are told stories, adventures, and fables, which are transformed by their imaginations into marvelous apparitions. It is often during such nights of mutual good will that a child’s being permanently takes shape. Here, one’s loves in life are kindled, and life’s bitterness is made sweeter.
Thus the spirit of full association has by no means disappeared in the communes, despite all the ill will of the rich and the state, who have every interest in breaking apart these tightly bound bundles of resistance to their greed or power and who attempt to reduce society to a collection of isolated individuals. Traditional mutual aid occurs even among people of different languages and nations. In Switzerland, it is customary to exchange children from family to family, between the German and the French cantons. Similarly, the country people of Béarn send their children to the Basque country, welcoming in turn young Basques as farm boys. In this way, they will all soon learn the two languages without the parents having to spend any money. Finally, all individuals with a similar trade and common interests—whether they be coal merchants, hunters, or sailors—have established virtual confraternities having neither written constitutions nor signatures, but nevertheless forming small, close-knit republics. Throughout the world, carnival performers who meet by chance on the road are allied in a sort of freemasonry that is far more solemn than that of the “brothers” who gather in the temples of Hiram."
-Elisée Reclus, "Culture and Property" (1905)

ok musician au hear me out: (it’s season 12 so far because that’s what i know but i’d love to hear your thoughts for who could fit the rest of the band !!)
jan and jackie are a duo, famous for jan’s energy and bright vocals with jackie’s warmer tones to balance it and provide lower harmonies, not to mention their iconic chemistry and will-they-won’t-they energy that keeps audiences guessing. their careers are firmly in the limelight after a big break a few years back, and they’ve gotten the best team they could hope for (though they’re still looking for someone to help gigi, their hair and costume person, with the outfits for the shows). now on their second national tour, they feel on top of the world—especially with their friends by their side.
but there’s a new name on the scene that both of them find themselves maybe too bothered by. where they’d never been anything but friendly and welcoming to the people they met, something about this new hot french solo act named nicky doll seems to be affecting them more than normal. worse, somehow, is the fact that she gets along so well with the rest of the team, and even worse? she’s opening for them at their next show.
cast do characters so far:
jan and jackie (main duo)
crygi as makeup (crystal) and hair/wardrobe (gigi)
nicky (an up-and-coming solo act and opener for their next show)
jaida (her designer and best friend)
who else would be in the band/in their team?
Oh this is SO cute! And all their friends from other seasons could be friends they meet st different stops on tour - In new York they play a show at the bar where they got started - which just got taken over by Jan‘s Highschool friend Rosé who can immediately sense the chemistry between not just Jan and Jackie but also Jan and Nicky, pushing her to fool around a little.
In Missouri they save some money by parking their (kind of old and wacky - its their first big tour after all) tour bus in front of Crystal’s little sister Daya’s place. They all stay in the house while they’re there, and Jackie and Jan find themselves forced to sleep in the living room with Nicky, pushed together on a pullout couch. While they deal with crashing egos and maybe some jealousy, Gigi gets to know Crystal a lot more on a trip through her hometown, getting a tour of all her favourite spots.
In LA they stay for a whole week to play at a festival, and in the early mornings after shows in the sun all day, lots of alcohol and maybe some other recreational activities, shenanigans ensue. Meanwhile, Gigi is nervous for Crystal to meet her found family, worried the LA girls will judge her.
After that they’re on the road up the coast for a while, and Jackie gets jealous when Jan and Nicky start writing a song together, especially since Gigi and Crystal seem to get closer by the day too as they make their way towards Seattle…

3 movies i saw this week and why you should watch them.
(this is my 260th post but the first one i use a title for.)
i hesitated to write this in french but i choose english to be understood by more people.
Tumblr media
i'm starting with the first movie i have seen on monday evening with my mom : "kuolleet lehdet" by aki kaurismäki. so at first, we went there not really knowing what to expect, she had read me the summary just before we left and i almost didn't want to go. however, this movie is amazing. the cinematography and the colors are gorgeous and the characters really endearing. there are a lot of songs in finnish (both sang by characters and outside of the film) that gave this already slow and melancholic art piece several moments outside of time. what i love too is the reality of the characters, the situations : they are just two proletarian workers yet they are shown to be deserving to be the main characters. we see them working, being friendly with their colleagues, having fun with them but also facing exhaustion at the end of the day as well as being seen as negligible quantity and easily replaceable by their bosses. the relationship between the two main characters is really sweet as well as their relationships with their own friends and it shows love in a way i particularly love : there is no need to know the name of the other or to do romantic things, just being together and feeling happy with eachother is enough.
Tumblr media
the second film i saw on wednesday night was "anatomie d'une chute" by justine triet, it had won the palme d'or at this year's cannes festival. so my mom and i went to see it, again i didn't really know what to expect except that there was actors i love in it and that it was a trial movie also about medias and how they make people percieve things. and this prize was so deserved, every actor and actress was incredible, some scenes were so well made, especially a play with sound and image as well as what we see, what movements did the camera and what it showed us. it sometimes got so close of a documentary more than a fictional movie. i have so many thoughts about it, truly one of the best movies of the year but many people talked about it so i can't really add anything new to say. but if you can, go watch it.
Tumblr media
the last film i have seen this week was "le procès goldman", directed by cédric kahn. i saw it just yesterday, alone and i already knew pierre goldman's story very well, i learned about this movie in may in a french tv emission about cannes and have been really waiting to see it since. it is most certainly my favorite but for very personal reasons. the story seems very niche : it is a huis-clos, set in 1976, of the second trial of a far-left activist, son of jewish partisans from poland (and step-brother of a very popular singer, who is still the favorite personality of french people and has been so for years) who was accused of several robberies as well as the murders of two pharmacists, but if he admits the robberies, he claims his innocence for the murders. this movie is not only showing the faillures of the racist police and racist judiciary systems in france but also has very interesting conversations between the characters about being jewish and therefore racialized. but it also touches a subject that is so specific and personal, i never saw a movie talk about it : the feeling that when you come from a family that suffered and/or fought so much, you feel like no matter how much you fight, it will never be enough to live up to this history, even if you're not asked to. you feel like you never deserved to be born and live when you know what your family went through. there is a sentence he said that marked me : "i was born and died on the 22th june 1944.". to me, it is one of the best way the jewish experience in a racist society and racist country like france has ever been represented. and i really urge you, jewish or not, to go see it and especially if you are not so you can understand what it feels like a little bit more. the acting of everyone is superb, showing so well the intensity that reigns in this room, but the main actor, arieh worthalter, is phenomenal. the actors are well casted and look like their real life counterparts. the realisation is really beautiful even if there are around three or four places shown in the movie. i love how everything about the movie is simple : a basic white writing font on a black background giving us the contexte and the title, i think there is no music as well. the costumes are gorgeous too and i love how many details were put into the fabrics, patterns. i really want to meet the director to tell him how this movie made me feel so seen.

( Content Warnings ) Cursing, and spoilers for shattered if you haven't watched it.
( Word Count ) 0.7k words // EDITED!
PART ONE || PART TWO
( 1 ) 你能说, 我爱你?! — means “can you say, I love you?!
( 2 ) 我爱你 — means, “I love you”
Tumblr media
— VALORANT MODERN ACTING AU! THE SIMPLE THINGS, WHEREAS;
A whole year of festivities. Holidays, birthdays, traditions, award ceremonies. The list goes on. For example:
Everyone's a Mr. Worldwide: Food edition.
Every day they learn something new. Cultural shocks happened within their small family, and they had a big laugh about it every time. Brimstone has every moment saved in his photobook.
Each agent had a taste of the different cuisines. Neon's sinigang and adobo ranked first, Fade's pide ranked second, and Jett's kimchi third.
Rice and ulam, no one can survive without it. Neon claimed once.
Imagine how delicious their meals are since there's something new each time. The whole world to offer in one big dining table.
Sova's babushka delivered the cast lunch one time and they'd never seen the Russian so happy while he spoke about what the dishes were.
Chamber can't use chopsticks, everyone made fun of him. (In a friendly way, of course.)
There's a moment of silence if there are people who do their prayers before their meals.
Nobody disturbs Viper and Raze while they eat, absolute madwomen.
Sage fusses over them like the mother she is and insists they eat more. Kay/o gladly takes more servings of the free food.
Omen got invited to an eating show and dominated the whole thing.
Everyone's a Mr. Worldwide: Travel edition.
Some perks about being in Valorant; they get to travel the world. The most notable moments were:
Icebox? Bennett Island, Sakha, Russia. A few of them were never used to the cold of winter, so they were excited to try something new.
There’s a tally of how many times Yoru slipped on the ice. It's updated on the internet every time, courtesy of Skye.
Bind? Rabat, Morocco. Cypher never thought he would be comforted by the harsh heat of the place.
Phoenix withered in his seat while he watched Cypher take big lungfuls of air. Why?
DUALITY! While filming in Rabat, the air blew sand to Phoenix's eyes and the shoot was delayed for a full hour. Nobody had water, so everyone ran the whole area looking for water while Killjoy and Viper dragged poor Phoenix around.
Phoenix tripped on his shoelaces, dragging Killjoy and Viper down with him. He screamed while falling, so now there was sand in his eyes and inside his mouth. He hasn't recovered from this incident to this day.
Fracture? Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.
The younger agents had the time of their lives playing on the zipline. The older ones suffered because Raze kept pleading to join in on the fun.
'You go first' war between Fade and Chamber. Fade gave up and pushed the French first, and he was not prepared at all. Lost a shoe in the process.
Behind the scenes.
There's a compilation of Breach screaming about being late for a couple of shoots; his arms are still charging.
Somebody conveniently stole Yoru's motorcycle that's now sitting in the lost and found.
Jett accidentally threw a knife at one of the cameras. At least they don't need to put effects on the scene anymore...?
Cypher's hat and Omen's cape are official merchandise sold out every time.
SHATTERED! Reyna ties Neon's hair with her favorite rubber band after their shoot together since Neon was sweaty.
Also, Reyna's nails have their own name at the spa since everyone 'ooooooo' and 'aaaaaaaaa'd at it.
All of the pictures of them during the last seconds of the fifth cinematic were all the official art Valorant made to surprise their cast. Viper had a selfie with her stand.
Now, why didn't Cypher die? Nora didn't give him a morning kiss. So he was sulky.
Before 'SHATTERED' got released, Killjoy accidentally lost her glasses since she took a nap so everyone panicked. But they were on schedule so it was all good.
Neon threw her frenzy a bit too far and flew out the window, so they had to get it.
Killjoy genuinely wasn't expecting a robot to be in front of her once she opened the door. That was why she just slapped it and mumbled a 'sorry' while Neon tried not to laugh.
Overall one of the best experiences Valorant has ever done.
EXTRA:
If the director had a chance to describe the cast: A chaotic collision of cultures and languages. In a good way.
But sometimes, this leads to fans saying...
"Chamber! Can you say I’m a putangina!"
“Neon told me exactly what that means, no.”
"Sage! 你能说 (random fan name), 我爱你?!"
"Astra, 我爱你 <3"
"Aw, thanks fam! I love you too :D"
"CYPHER CAN I MARRY YOUR WIFE?"
"Absolutely not."
Yeah, Valorant has never done a meet and greet after this ever again.

Spider-Man Read-Through 046: Night Fever (SSM 22-24)
MASTERPOST
In this post:
Tumblr media
Hell yeah!
SSM #22 starts with Moon Knight failing to protect an informant and discovering that the Maggia may soon discover his secret identity.
Cue Peter Parker drawn by Mike Zeke.
Tumblr media
He does the Monthly Aunt-May-in-Hospital mention (interconnectedness, woohoo!) and the bell rings. Betty's here! Remember how she left Ned, and Peter got kinda dumped by MJ? Well, they're off to the movies now!
Turns out Betty's already seen every big movie with Ned in Paris, so they go to a Chaplin festival.
Tumblr media
Oh, I hate those faces. They look nothing like Peter and Betty have looked these past ~200 issues (not counting Team-Up). Why such harsh lines? They're in their 20-somethings!
By now, Flash and Sha-Shan are called regulars by the yellow box, which pleases me quite a bit. They seem to be doing just fine. Another regular is White Tiger, my beloved, who's angsting about the girl who won't date him because he's a super-hero. Yeah, we don't want another Gwen Stacy now, do we?
Anyway, thugs attack a coffee shop where Moon Knight (in his civilian identity) and Spidey cross paths, and we get a fun battle.
Tumblr media
I love that kind of thing.
Of course, MK and SM have to fight, because talking isn't a free action in this world. And suddenly, someone storms in...
Tumblr media
Literally. So we've got presumably French Moon Knight (and/or his acolyte, I don't know the lore and the way this is presented in this issues is confusing) and a French villain too. Yay, France?
On *another website*, readers are just as annoyed as me that Spidey keeps fighting potential allies before trying to talk to them. He makes the same mistake again and again!
In the letters, there's a very salty message I can't help but agree with.
Tumblr media
Recent issues have been better about it at least, but it's telling that the "not enough Peter Parker" complaint has been held again and again. I do love White Tiger, and found Razorback fun enough.
Thankfully, for #23, Mike Esposito is back.
For what's worth, I like Cyclone for no other reason that I love his design. So I'm happy to see him!
Cyclone helpfully informs us that it's been a year since his first appearance in ASM #143 and #144! That's neat to know. He also kills someone on-page.
That's actually kind of surprising to see, and it does up the stakes. Anyway, he leaves, thinking he also killed the two heroes, and the latter finally talk. Spidey ends up going to Moon Knight's base.
Tumblr media
Seems like our friend has been doing some work.
Meanwhile: we see a glipse of Hector's family, Holly's about to call him, MJ tries to call Peter but he doesn't answer and she goes to the disco with "Marty" (a proto-Paul?), and Betty also can't get a hold of Ned.
It's funny how in ASM, the Peter/Betty pair was recently quite outrageous, but then in SSM they dialed it back quite a bit. Just like the quick MJ appearance in a recent SSM issue, it seems like the writers are in conflict.
Anyway, SM and MK find a Maggia meeting and fight everyone.
Tumblr media
What the heck.
Aside from (probably) Big M, everyone is taken care of.
As for #24...
Tumblr media
Now, THIS is fun!
Tumblr media
First page. We got the Monthly Aunt-May-in-Hospital mention, phew!
This issue starts with Peter being forced to fight thugs in a train. It's quite original, since he has to wait for a tunnel to obscure everything and use his powers.
Later...
Tumblr media
So there's a lot to unpack here. First off, Mrs Muggins is much more friendly than in the past issues. Secondly, Peter mentions his "not so obvious" sex appeal and I have to laugh because COME ON. I don't know if it's a writer trying to rewrite history, or just Peter being clueless, but regardless, come oooooon...
This is also the first time in ages we see Harry, so that's also great. And Sha-Shan's part of the group, neat! By the way, where's Randy?
...Where IS Randy? For a few issues, a while back, it seemed like he was part of the group, but now? Who knows! Holly's here though. Without Hector, but still. But then... where's Gloria?!
Aaaah, they keep changing the cAAaaAaAaast!!!
Anyway, Peter says the place they're going to is fancy and he doesn't have a tuxedo, but Harry took care of that. Of course he'd know the measurements of his boyfriend!
Tumblr media
Oh, they came out alright. I missed seeing the cast interact with each other, that's cool!
Elsewhere, the Maggia steals a big magnet or what not, but it's for the next SSM batch and I kind of don't care.
Tumblr media
So this is kind of a disaster, but those interactions are delicious. See, when they try, Spider-Man can be really fun! Especially when Peter is dashing like that.
The Hypno-Hustler and his backup singers arrive on scene and hypnotize everybody, except for Peter, who quickly changes and beats him.
Anyway, in the reader's letters, someone is just as clueless as Peter:
Tumblr media
"OUR Peter? Who really was never even very handsome?" who ARE you, Al Shroeder III?
Tumblr media
I feel validated!
In the next SSM batch: more cloning! Can't wait.

Character Intro: Eiresione (Kingdom of Ichor)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicknames- The Laurel Maiden by the people of Olympius
Ren by her friends, mother, & others
Age- 14 (immortal)
Location- Little Athens, New Olympus
Personality- She's a bright cheerful young girl with an unwavering positive spirit & vibrant energy.
She has the standard abilities of a goddess- except shapeshifting. As the goddess of offerings & the laurel wreath her powers/abilities include limited chlorokinesis (as it pertains to the olive and laurel wreath) and is able to manipulate gold (though not Imperial Gold).
Ren is the only child of her mother Argía (goddess of holidays). They live in a large brownstone in the Little Athens neighborhood of New Olympus. They also have a cabin in the state of Meteora- complete with a chimney & fireplace. The interior design of the brownstone is very posh and modern- with all the doors being made out of Imperial Gold. Lots of olive plants & laurel wreaths serve as decorations. They also have a rooftop garden.
Some of her favorite drinks include eggnog milkshakes, cranberry fruit punch, peppermint tea, spiced apple cider, and sparkling water. Her usuals from The Roasted Bean is a large vanilla gingerbread latte & a medium cranberry apple splash.
Ren loves her mother's cooking- especially breakfast! Some of her favorite things to eat for breakfast include maple cinnamon oatmeal, scrambled eggs & roasted potato casserole (garnished with olives), french toast (topped with whipped cream & cranberry syrup), & toasted slices of banana bread topped with butter and fig preserves.
Ren is fluent in Latin and her Old Greek isn't too shabby!
She attends an esteemed school in downtown New Olympus, which she's currently on break from for the summer. Her best friends are Eleos (Ellie) (goddess of mercy, pity, & compassion) and Heimarmene (Marnie) (goddess of shared fate). Ren's aware of the other godly students & is friendly with all of them, especially Philautia (goddess of self love). At school, she's on the cheerleading team and is also a member of the drama club. Her favorite subject is literature.
One of her favorite gifts she's ever recieved is a pair of laurel wreath shaped earrings which Ellie made herself.
She thinks she's the best & fastest gift wrapper in the entire pantheon!
A go-to snack she loves eating are cucumber flavored potato chips. She also likes caramel apples, candy apples, & dolmadakia.
Ren plays an active role in coming into her godly responsibilities. Because she's the goddess of offerings (with one of her sacred symbols being the laurel wreath), she generally contributes to the festivals of Pyanopsia and Thargelia. There's even a song based on her which is sung during the festivals: "Eiresione for us brings figs and bread of the richest, brings us honey in pots and oil to rub off from the body, strong wine too in a beaker, that one may go to bed mellow."
Her and her mother go all out during the holiday season! Ren's favorite holidays include Olympius' Independence Day (which always include a beachside barbeque & a fireworks show), the Summer Solstice, Thanksgiving, & Christmas (loves, loves, loves caroling!)
She loves going to church and is even a part of the choir, with her mother designing the robes.
Her go-to product to use is the Olive Visibly's oil control toner. It was a godsend when she was going through acne!
Another favorite pasttime of Ren's is baking. In the pantheon, she's well known for her delicious christopsomo (Greek Christmas bread) & kourabiedes (Greek Christmas cookies). She even sold decorative tins filled with cookies for her school's bake sale.
In the pantheon (aside from her mother) she also looks up to Demeter (goddess of the harvest & agriculture), Apollo (god of the sun, music, poetry, healing, medicine, archery, plague, light, & knowledge), Dionysus (god of wine), and Athena (goddess of wisdom). Ren's godmother (and close family friend) is Panigýri (goddess of festivals) & mother to one of The Graces, Thalia.
She secretly wants to go to The Underworld to experience snow for the first time.
Ren still kind of has a crush on Ellie's uncle Adranos (god of fire).
Some of her favorite desserts include gingerbread cupcakes (with vanilla bean frosting), pecan pie, eggnog cheesecake, and mint chocolate chip ice cream.
Her favorite meals include rib roast (with a cherry glaze), garlic mashed potatoes, parmesan brussel sprouts salad (added with roasted pine nuts and pomegranate seeds then drizzled in cranberry vinegar dressing), & tapenade (served with white rice).
In her free time, Ren enjoys spending time with her mom, friends, & godmother. She's gotten into nail art & loves painting designs on her nails. She also likes knitting, sewing, doing embroidery, drawing, reading, shopping, caroling, listening to music, and gymnastics. She and her mom also participates in the annual toy & food drives.
"The art of giving is the ultimate sign of wealth."

The Trophy
Tumblr media
When flying back from a business trip in Poland, Kageyama Tobio finds himself seated next to a complete random stranger. He finds himself enthralled by her and the two agree to have a date when they return to Japan.
But there's a problem.
The stranger is unemployed, which completely clashes with his first class, upper class lifestyle.
Read first chapter here
Read previous chapter here
Kageyama had probably just broken the world record for the shortest engagement ever.
Ever since you had stormed out of his apartment, he had yet to hear back from you. He had been calling and texting you nonstop, begging you to come back so you two could talk face to face. His messages had been left on read and his calls were sent straight to voicemail, leaving him with a sinking feeling. Instead of confronting his feelings, he had thrown himself into work, staying late to go through proposals and throwing himself into lengthy projects.
The second week of not hearing from you, his secretary cautiously entered the office, expression nervous as she slowly approached his desk.
“Mr. Kageyama?”
He looked up from the reports he was reading, greeting her with a polite nod and inquiring about what she needed.
“I just need your confirmation about whether you will be attending the Governor’s Ball this year. They need a headcount by tonight to ensure they have enough food and drinks for everyone.”
Shit. Every year, Kageyama and his family would attend the ball, donating a generous amount of money to both the governor and his office to assist the city of Tokyo in any way needed. His hope this year was to bring you and announce that he was engaged, but it seemed that wasn’t going to happen.
“Oh, sure. Just put me down for myself, thank you.”
“Yes sir.”
With that, she scampered out, leaving Kageyama alone again with his mountain of paperwork. Sighing, he reached into his pocket and scrolled to his messages, opening the group chat with him and his friends.
Who else got invited to the Governor’s Ball?
The chat was quick to flood with responses from everyone, with most saying that they would be there. He shot back a simple thumbs up emoji before locking his phone and setting it back down. Sighing again, he picked up the previous report and dove back into it, putting the Governor’s Ball aside for now.
***
“Tobio! A pleasure!”
The Mayor greeted him with a warm smile, pulling him into a friendly embrace before bowing his head politely. Kageyama plastered on a gentle smile, bowing back before thanking the Mayor for the invitation.
“Oh please, you and your family do so much to help our beautiful city! This year, we’ll be taking donations in the form of an auction. I do hope you’ll join us for that!”
“But of course. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
The Mayor laughed, clapping him on the shoulder before urging him to enter and join the festivities. Kageyama obliged, climbing the remainder of the stairs of the venue until he entered the entrance hall. It was scattered with politicians, public figures, activists, and various other businessmen that he recognized. The actual ballroom was towards the back, the French doors wide open revealing wide tables filled with delicious, exotic foods and various bottles of alcohol. A waiter was walking around with flutes of champagne, and he quickly swiped one from the closest worker. Taking a sip, he let his eyes wander about the room, taking in the familiar faces and scrutinizing the strangers.
He nearly choked on his drink when he saw you approaching him.
You were wearing a white, satin, off the shoulder gown, with bows tied around your elbows to keep the sleeves upright. The rest of the gown flowed to the floor, slightly wrapped around your hips to showcase your figure. Your hair was pulled back into a low, sleek bun, a pair of diamond drop earrings hanging from your ears. A tan clutch was held in one hand, the other wrapped securely around a man’s arm.
Kageyama glared at Oikawa, who was grinning at him.
“Mr. Kageyama,” you greeted him, tone polite as if you were meeting him for the first time.
He could only blink, gaze flickering between you and Oikawa.
“O-Oikawa,” he stuttered, extending out a stiff hand for a handshake.
The man took it, squeezing tightly as he greeted him with a teasing tone as he always did. You leaned more into Oikawa, eyes fluttering as you looked at Kageyama curiously.
“Please let me introduce you to my date. Have you heard of Bōken Books?”
Bōken Books was an international company that had recently settled in Japan. Many had predicted that, due to the Digital Age, the company would go under due to the decrease in popularity of print. However, the company had managed to thrive, utilizing the Digital Age to their advantage to branch out while also publishing a significant amount of hard copies yearly. The couple who ran the company had a daughter that was set to take over, but she had never been introduced to the public eye and had been a secret. In fact, the daughter’s secrecy was so notorious that many gossip columns speculated about her true identity.
And it turned out that Tobio Kageyama, the current King of Tokyo, had been dating her.
You extended out a hand, coy smile on your face as he gently shook it, relishing in the familiar feel of your soft skin. Pulling back, you angled your head up to peer at Oikawa.
“You are right, he is a man of few words!” you giggled.
The world around Kageyama began to spin and he excused himself, stumbling off towards the closest hallway. Thankfully, the hallway seemed to lead to a staff exit, and he leaned against the wall, trying to catch his breath and keep his anger at bay.
“Kageyama?”
  Well fuck me.
Slowly turning his head, he turned to see Tsukishima standing there, hands tucked into the pockets of his suit pants. He had his phone out, and Kageyama assumed he had stepped aside to make a phone call.
“What are you doing here?”
“Attending the Governor’s Ball, what does it look like I’m doing,” he barked in response.
Tsukishima raised an eyebrow. “I mean here in this hallway.”
He hesitated. “I . . . needed a moment.”
“Overwhelmed already? Uh oh, the King of Tokyo might be losing his touch.”
Kageyama scowled, lowering his gaze towards the floor.
“I . . . bumped into someone I didn’t expect.”
“Oh? Is that someone a girl?”
His head shot up.
“Oh come on, you talked about that girl and I immediately knew something was up. What happened, you scared her off with your monstrous attitude?”
“Shut up,” Kageyama mumbled.
There was a moment before Tsukishima sighed and stepped closer.
“Tobio, what happened?”
Over the years, the two had learned to tolerate each other. Kageyama had always had a direct attitude, much like Tsukishima, and the two had butted heads due to that. However, at the end of the day, the two were still friends and tried to support each other as much as they could.
“It was that girl, you’re right. I proposed and she said yes but . . .”
“You proposed? Tobio, are you serious?”
Kageyama went on about the whole situation, about hiding you from his friends and how he was embarrassed about your lack of work, only to find out that you were, in fact, the heiress to a large publishing company. Tsukishima listened silently the whole time, expression blank until Kageyama finished.
“Fuck, that’s a situation I need a drink for. What are you going to do?”
“Well first I need to get her away from Shittykawa,” he frowned.
Tsukishima laughed, shaking his head.
“You’ll manage. It’s Oikawa. He’ll be swarmed later, don’t worry.”
He clapped a hand on his shoulder and gestured that they should return to the Ball. Nodding, the two returned to the entrance hall, making their way through the throngs of people to enter the ballroom. Tsukishima muttered something about meeting Yamaguchi, as he had gotten him an invite, before disappearing into the crowd. Sighing, Kageyama began making his way over to grab some food and find a table to sit.
While perusing the alcohol table, a pair of fingers gently tickled his arm, trailing down towards his wrist. Turning, he was surprised to see you standing there, face impassive as you blinked up at him.
“Now you want to talk?” he spat out, turning back towards the table.
“Oikawa got distracted by some activist. I took that chance to slip away.”
“Why are you even talking to me?”
“I read all your messages and listened to every voicemail.”
“Yet you couldn’t reach out?”
Frustrated, he grabbed an entire bottle of gin, grabbing two glasses before turning to face you again.
“I don’t have time for this. Goodbye.”
Although he was hurt, he began walking away. Your hand on his wrist again stopped him in his tracks, causing him to glare at you from over his shoulder.
“I’m sorry. I should have told you everything from the start.”
Kageyama barked out a humorless laugh. “You think?”
It was your turn to frown.
“I didn’t want my upbringing to determine our relationship. I knew that once you found out who I was, you would only want to be with me because it was beneficial for you.”
It stung him to hear you think that of him. He opened his mouth to argue but you were quick to beat him.
“Don’t deny it, you know it’s true.”
“Have you considered I would have still loved you for you?”
You blinked up at him, stunned.
“What, do you think I’m so incapable of love? Because I’m just some businessman who prioritizes work and my status over everything?”
He shook his head.
“I wouldn’t have done that for you. I never did that for you. Sure, I fucked up, I realize that now, but I still made you first in my life.”
For the first time since his grandfather died, Kageyama began to feel tears well up in his eyes. He turned his head away from you, shaking his head before walking away towards a table. Oikawa’s voice reached him from behind, asking where you had been and if Kageyama had bothered you.
He didn’t wait to hear your response.

The Cast of Characters
“The soul of a country lives in any one block” -Peter Hessler
The people make the place, and that’s especially true in Dakar. Besides the painted pirogues in Lebou villages, the bustling downtown markets and -gulp- the remaining French colonial architecture, Dakar is not a very Instagram ready city. “Lots to do, nothing to see,” is how someone described it to me. It’s a magical and compelling place because of the density and full commitment of it’s inhabitants to living their lives out in public space, and often together. Men work out in the dozens on the beach in muscled groups, women stride together in neon tailored dresses down the street, the nightclubs are filled with coordinated Afro-beat dancers, kids run squealing in neighborhood bunches down the alley, the fisherman grunt and haul their vessels together out to see, vendors cluster together with hair products and mangoes and dried fish. It was so overwhelming, at first, that it took a minute to separate out faces and stories from the crowd. Some of my first attempts at friendship didn’t quite take, as happens in anyplace. Here are snapshots of some of my favorite Senegalese and West African friends I spent time with this year:
-Ibraham: Guinean musician with a spider tattoo on his shoulder (he told me the spider protected the prophet Muhammed by weaving a web across the entrance to a cave where he was hiding, leading his pursuers to think it was abandoned.) I met him trying to haul heavy new flower pots up my stairs, when he stopped to lend a hand. He’d lived in Dakar for about 8 years, came looking for work and learned Wolof from kids here, though he spoke a half dozen other languages besides. He was an incredible musician, especially percussion, with a whole stable of guinean songs he could lead solo or sing as part of a group. I eventually started taking drumming lessons with him in the spring. He was constantly meeting new arrivals -especially from Guinea- and taking them under his wing, as well as striking up conversations with friendly foreigners. People were drawn to him, I could see. It was also a tough year for him, precarious housing and economic situation. COVID hit everywhere hard, especially creative industries that depended on live performance, and Senegal was no exception. He battled some dark days, alternating between seeking work in low-skill labor fields and holding out for musical gigs that never materialized. There was always his family home in Guinea to go back to, and at the end of my time he was ready to head home and recharge if things didn’t improve in a few months.
-Abdalla: I drew a portrait of Abdalla for his mom, and I needed to erase the mouth twice to make the smile bigger each time. That should tell you most of what you need to know. I had trouble connecting with a lot of the Baye Fall besides occasional greetings, but Abdalla was a local boy who seemed to dip his toe in just enough to scoop out reggae music and an extra dose of peace and love. The songs he composed himself are some of my favorite pieces of music from Senegal, and I hope he has the chance sometime to sing them in front of the huge crowd he deserves. His mom -Madame Faye- was not only acknowledged as making some of the best thieb in the village, but gave some of the best life advice around- I spent a good few days in her kitchen, where we’d berate Abdalla together for not helping with the cooking and he’d laugh his big laugh and play us another song. He was trying to organize a local music festival through the town, and waiting for enough funding to record an album. I worried about how trusting he was, sometimes; he always took people at face value. In the winter he let a new arrival looking for work sleep in his bed, and the man took off at 4 AM with his recording instrument, phone and guitar. The village seemed to take care of it’s own, though, the tough fisherman always jostling him affectionately when we walked around. He led a lot of our song circles, parceling out melodies and crooning high notes. During one golden afternoon I walked out to the beach and swam to Ngor Island, to find Abdalla on my favorite hidden beach with a few friends. They had guitars, flutes, drums. We sang together, and then when the sunset came we hugged and I swam home.
-Nalla: Friends who work towards goals are high on my list, whatever those goals. I few years ago Nalla was a pastry chef, when he decided he wanted to pursue art. He spent most of his time on the island, helpings uncle fix up a giant dilapidated house they were going to one day turn into a hotel/restaurant. There he holed up with paints and scraps of wood and canvasses and worked on his technique all year. Soft-spoken, blue-black skin, the chiseled Lebou cheekbones. He was one of the most constant presences at the Tuesday art nights, and I saw his technique improve dramatically while we were there. At the end of the year, he had a piece entered into the Dakar Biennial, and I felt like a proud cousin. He was an Ngorois through and through, with his dad a fisherman and dad an underwater welder. It was astonishing how may people he said hi to, both in the village and on the island. Sometimes we’d take out kayaks from the house, paddling out the the surf wave and daring each other to take bigger rides in the hard top. Even in the water, he knew every fishing boat and solitary figure that slippered along with a spear gun. He was focussed on bettering his art with a laser focus, to the exclusion of looking for a romantic partner, trying to stay on the island so he wouldn’t get distracted.
Julie: My Congolese friend, with a big smile and a weakness for sappy French love songs. She’d lived here for a few years, but been in a toxic relationship that she’d just escaped a few months before we met, with a jealous partner who didn’t want her to leave the house much. She talked about her mom often, a professional chef who cooked for airline pilots at the flight lounge. (Incidentally, her chicken recipe is one of my most treasured phone notes from my time there) When we met she was managing a clothing boutique, and sparring with an owner who seemed both not to trust her enough and to ask for too much commitment. It was fun to be around her; she had she energy of just having moved to the city and wanting to try everything. Carolyn took her along on several dance nights, and I think she might be hooked. Notably, she has an identical twin named Juliet, and two gorgeous twins with almost the same name caused a stir whenever I saw the two of them out together. In some ways she seemed to be adapting to life in Senegal, and others still seemed to grate. Taxi drivers going for the financial jugular in proposing fares never stopped annoying her. I’d long since resigned myself to giving the many kids asking for money a sympathetic smile and walking on, but it made her angry to see every time. “What parent would let their child out to do this??” She’d always ask. We were both trying to make friends and community in the new city, and reconcile it’s patterns with what we were familiar with. It was so nice to have a partner in that.
Petit: I first saw Petit marching around at midnight acting like a tree come to life. He was acting out a scene on the dance floor with his friend Tafa. The two of them remain some of the most creative individuals I’ve come across in any country. Like athletes slumped over chairs except for the big game, they had the ability to hide in a crowd, or to dazzle. Petit was often out of town, down performing or taking workshops down the coast in Toubab Diallo, but when he was around I loved getting together to dance or just play with movement. He had recently taken a puppet making course as well as a mask-styling workshop, and also worked as an acting teacher for a local school. He grew up in the southern region of Casamance, and talked about it always with deep, abiding love. I have no doubt when I go back he will be living there. His projects dealt often with the relationship between the self and the whole, or past traumas unearthed and confronted. One night he extemporized over Ibrahim’s drum beat, a monologue on the contentment we feel or don’t when alone. The last week before I left he was preparing a dance to welcome a group of black Americans, part of a program called Back to the Source. They were traveling to the famous Door of No Return on Goree Island, where slaves where loaded onto ships. After, they'd come to Ngor, where Petit and his crew were constructing a beautiful wooden door, through which they'd dance their American cousins as a blazing contrast to the door on Goree they’d just “closed.” Having such bright creative energy was a blessing and a half this year.
-Cheikh: ran a clothing boutique near the beach. He invested a lot in upgrading the space while I was there, until it became the hang-out spot for his group of friends. Twenty years ago he started out just selling clothes from a bag on this beach, and it was cool to see him now with a fancy shop. He started selling ice cream near the end, which I thought was a smart business move. I set him up with a Tinder account and we talked about love and dating a lot. His friend Moustafa always had a good sense of the political goings on of the neighborhood, and I lived leaning against the clothing racks, picking their brain and occasionally helping them sell things to tourists or lay out new merchandise.
-Amadou: Worked at a French-Senegalese organization around the corner, a center for unhoused kids, often running away from Quranic schools or home. Amadou ran soccer programs for them, helped with the lunch programs and literacy courses. He was a formidable soccer player himself, chiseled straight out of a men's health magazine. I couldn't believe he was still single. It was a treat watching the African Cup with him, such intense concentration and joy.
And many, many others of course, too many to fit here, everyone on their path, with lovely traits and foibles and disappointments and dreams little and big.
My European and American friends are dear as well, and just because I don’t spin out their stories here doesn’t mean they didn’t make this year so very special. Ben, Nick, Emily, Sait, Anne, Sara, Liz, Jake, if you’re reading this, sending you a big hug.
