Becoming an Intelligent Woman
My Dears,
There is no greater goal than being a fine woman who is intelligent, kind, and elegant. As much as we all want to be described with these adjectives, it takes a great amount of discipline to get there. It is very doable only if you are ready to put in the work.
Here are steps you can add to your routine in the next 4 weeks that will make you 1% more intelligent than you were before. This is a process that should become a habit not a goal. It is long term, however, I want you to devote just 4 weeks into doing these steps first and recognize the changes that follow.
Watch documentaries: This is the easiest step, we all have access to Youtube. Youtube has a great number of content on art, history, technology, food, science etc that will increase your knowledge and pique your curiosity. I really did not know much about world history especially from the perspective of World war 1 & 2, the roaring 20s, Age of Enlightenment, Jazz era, monarchies etc but with several channels dedicated to breaking down history into easily digestible forms. I have in the last 4 weeks immersed myself into these documentaries. Here are a few I watched:
The fall of monarchies
The Entire History of United Kingdom
The Eight Ages of Greece
World War 1
World War 2
The Roaring '20s
The Cuisine of the Enlightenment
2. Read Classics: I recommend starting with short classics so that you do not get easily discouraged. Try to make reading easy and interesting especially if you struggle with finishing a book. Why classics? You see, if you never went to an exclusive private school in Europe or America with well crafted syllabus that emphasized philosophy, history, art, and literary classics, you might want to know what is felt like and for me this was a strong reason. Asides that, there is so much wisdom and knowledge available in these books. In these books, you gain insights to the authors mind, the historical context of the era, the ingenuity of the author, the hidden messages, and the cultural impact of these books. Most importantly, you develop your personal philosophy from the stories and lessons you have accumulated from the lives of the characters in the books you read. Here are classics to get you started:
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald
Candide by Voltaire
Paradise lost by John Milton
3. Study the lives of people who inspire you: I dedicate one month to each person that fascinates me. I read their biography (date of birth, background, death, influences, work, style, education, personal life) For this month, I decided to study Frank Lloyd Wright because I was fascinated by the Guggenheim Museum in New York. I began to read about his influence in American Architecture (Organic architecture, Prairie School, Usonian style), his tumultuous personal life, his difficult relationship with his mentor (Louis Sullivan), his most iconic works etc. By the end of the year I would have learned the ins and outs of people I am inspired by through books and documentaries. Here are other people I plan to learn more about:

Hi all,
Welcome to the last part of my 2024 altar tour! 4/4
What a year it has been! I have learned so much and made so many new friends! My altar has always been a reflection of my psyche, seeing it’s beauty reminds me of the beauty that exists within me. :)

So this is my final little work space where I do pendulum magick and tarot readings. There is a devotional mug to Lord Lucifer which I use for our morning coffee chats. There is also Lucifer’s devotional dragon statue, as well as the dual scrying mirror for him and Faviel.
There is a normal mirror and a statue of a pharaoh’s tomb. The board which the flowers and offerings are placed on dawns Faviel’s sigil and candle. To Faviel I have offered a palm stone, flowers, an acorn, smoky quartz, some black earrings, and some grubs.
Beside him is my pendulum in a selenite charging bowl along with my pendulum mat.
The black and white image you see was a piece of art I made for Archangel Jophiel after he gifted me a vision a year or so ago. I use it whenever I’m reaching out to him.

Beneath my altar is some space for storage where I keep my larger cauldron, mortar and pestle, larger candles, etc. There is also my stand where I keep my broom, fire poker, and shovel. My witch broom is wrapped in a protective seal. I use it to sweep ash from my prayer mat.

I wanted to end this tour off with my reading material because I want to emphasize how important it is to understand that “magick” is not just “stuff”.
I really enjoy all of my magical tools and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having and wanting pretty things or an aesthetically pleasing altar. In fact I believe aesthetic and care are acts of love in themselves. Don’t ever let someone shame you for wanting to decorate and indulge in the aesthetics of your craft.
But please do remember that our greatest magical tool is our minds, our senses, and our experiences- our brains. Remember to read read read lots of material from many different sources. Contemplate honestly on everything you read, hear and experience. Do not take everything you believe today as a fact, do not box yourself in to anything. (Maybe that’s the Luciferian in me speaking lol)
Learn how to do magick alone, without any tools. My magick is not my stuff, although my stuff greatly aids me in my magick. Does that make sense?

John Lennon brought his best friend to the band in 1960. Sutcliffe managed to record only three songs with The Beatles: "Hallelujah, I Love Her So", "You'll Be Mine" and "Cayenne". In fact, he was a talented artist, but Lennon persuaded him to give up his brushes and buy a bass guitar.
On tour in Hamburg, Sutcliffe met Astrid Kirchherr, a graduate of the Hamburg College of Art, fell in love and they married in November 1960. He decided to give up music in order to devote himself entirely to his beloved and return to drawing. However, the happiness did not last long - Stewart began to suffer from severe headaches, which at times caused blindness and sensitivity to light.

He wrote long (up to 30 pages) letters to John Lennon, and wrote in the name of Jesus Christ. On April 10, 1962, Stuart Sutcliffe died of a brain hemorrhage in an ambulance before reaching the hospital. The stroke occurred from a ruptured aneurysm, the cause of which is still unknown. He was 21 years old.

Not to put pressure on you, u don't have to answer this but was wondering if you could explain more about the cult mindset of gls u mentioned 👀
Disclaimer: while I have done research on this subject and this is mostly talking about the cult warning signs that the glc falls into, I have never been involved with a cult or closely interacted with someone in a cult, so please correct me if I say something wrong.
The Cult Like Nature of the Green Lantern Corps
The Green Lantern Corps of the 60s to the 90s (post Emerald Twilight GLC functions much differently) falls into cult-like practices in several ways. The most blatant is the belief of the perfection of the leaders, lack of ability to question or doubt the leaders, and dismissal and isolation of those who attempt to leave the Green Lantern Corps. 
Belief in the Perfection of the LEaders
The Guardians are the Green Lanterns’ masters. The first time we see Hal call the Guardians his masters was in Green Lantern (1960) #30, not even four years after Hal was introduced. This showcases the complete authority the Guardians have over their Lanterns, as the word master means that someone is dominating or owning another thing. The Guardians dominate their Lanterns' will and beliefs causing them to believe in the perfection of their leaders. Hal even says, “the Guardians were right, as always” in Green Lantern (1960) #150. The Guardians have an immense amount of knowledge and this causes an unhealthy amount of devotion and idealization in the minds of the Lanterns.
In fact, in Green Lantern: Mosaic #6, John Stewart says, “Ah, yes. Satisfying the Guardians. Isn’t that what we live for?” The idealization of the Guardians as perfect has led to a scenario where the Lanterns live to serve them. In this scenario especially, they do not care about the ethics of the Guardian’s actions. The Mosaic Cities is a 90s plot where the Old Timer kidnapped a large number of cities from different planets, and after he was defeated, the rest of the Guardians kept the cities to study. This was covered up by Hal who convinced, using a show of power at times, the original planets to allow their cities to stay with the Guardians (Green Lantern: Mosaic #16). The people had no choice in the matter and actually rebelled multiple times in an attempt to go home. Hal and John, the main Lanterns involved with the Guardians at the time, never really questioned the ethics behind the experiment. In fact, John actively opposes any attempts for the people to go home. This showcases how two usually logical and ethical men have become twisted because of how much they idealize the Guardians and their ideas of perfection.
Lack of Ability to Question Leaders
On the rare occasions that a Green Lantern questions the Guardians, they are either dismissed or forced to suffer for this question. In fact, in the Green Lantern (1960) #150 example, even though Hal admitted the Guardians were always right, he was still punished for initially doubting them by not being able to return to Earth for a whole year in universe. In addition, that arc was filled with tests for Hal to prove his loyalty. He, the Greatest of all their Green Lanterns as he was referred to even in this comic, was not granted even a moment of doubt or uncertainty. Even after a year filled with tests and repeatedly proving himself, the Guardians still responded to his pleas to go home with telling him how disappointed they are in him for still desiring to go home (Green Lantern (1960) #172). This showcases the unwillingness of the Guardians to admit their own faults. “Hal should have fallen in line with their thinking and abandoned Earth for them” is their thinking. 
Another prominent example of the Guardians punishing Hal for questioning them is in the classic Green Lantern/Green Arrow era. In Green Lantern (1960) #76, Ollie yells at the Guardians, telling them they’ve made a puppet out of Hal and that the Guardians need to “come off [their] perch…learn where [humans] are at…and why!” The Guardians do decide to entertain Ollie’s motion and send Appa ali Apsa (aka the Old Timer) to journey across America with Hal and Ollie. However, in Green Lantern (1960) #77, after Hal’s ring mysteriously failed, the Guardians reveal they’ve reduced the ring’s powers, specifically it’s power to protect Hal from mortal injury. Hal is on an Guardian approved mission with a Guardian, yet his ring is no longer allowed to work correctly because he’s not performing his regular duties. More than just that explanation, this feels like a retaliation. Hal supports Ollie’s yelling at the Guardians, so they punish Hal by reducing his power. In fact, when Hal goes solo again, he regains the full ability of his ring. This is not as explicit of a punishment for disobedience as the space exile, but it still shows the controlling nature of the Guardians and how they respond to questioning.
Dismissal and Isolation of Those Who Leave the Corps
Whenever a Green Lantern decides to leave the corps in any way but death, they are considered wrong for that. The first time we see this is in Green Lantern (1960) #30, Katma’s origin story. In this issue, Katma decides to quit the Green Lantern Corps for the sake of her love, and Hal is instructed to use any possible means to make her change her mind. Hal ends up tricking her that they’re being attacked to show that her loyalty to the Lanterns outweighs the love in her heart for her fiance. This shows the controlling natures of the Guardians. Katma was not allowed to quit of her own will. Instead, another Lantern, one she had never met before in fact, was sent to make her change her mind by any means necessary. There is no true, unpressured freedom to leave the corps once in it, and this is treated as something to be celebrated by the characters.
In fact, Katma Tui herself is the most prominent and repeated defender of the Guardians’ actions, especially revolving around her. She appreciates Hal changing her mind, and she changes his mind the first time he almost quits the corps (Green Lantern (1960) #150). The second time, he actually quits the corps, and both Hal and Katma consider this a personal offense against her. As she says in Green Lantern (1960) #193,  she can forgive him for tricking her, but “what [she] cannot forgive is his leaving the corps himself–for love!” Hal is a traitor for deciding to leave, and he is isolated from his former support group. Both Hal and Katma buy into the idea that “leaving == betraying,” and they are the two Lanterns supposed to most exemplify the values of the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians themselves. Hal only manages to make up for this transgression through years of work, and still, in Green Lantern (1990), the Guardians do not trust him as much as they did before. He will always be tainted because he attempted to leave. A Green Lantern should die before giving up their ring, that is the message that is taught in these stories.
Conclusion
The Green Lantern Corps’ cultish qualities stand out the most in the late 70s and early 80s as the writers begin to develop the darker side of the Green Lanterns and the Guardians, but it existed much earlier and much later. While this is just a small amount of the Corps history, it stands out for its harshness and controlling aspects. The isolating aspect of the corps and the tenacity for isolated, homeless people to be selected for it, showcases the more dark side of the corps, and why I call it cultish.

This recent talk about authors has me curious: Do you have favourite authors? Or favourite books that you'd recommend (as in not specifically recommend to a person looking to read a specific genre etc. but rather a book you loved reading and would love to shove into absolutely everybody's faces if you could)? Do you only read in English or do you also like to read in other languages? What book or books are you currently reading?
And just so these aren't one-way-street-like snoopily curious questions: my favourite authors are Emma Donoghue and Hannah Kent; my favourite books are "Slammerkin" by Emma Donoghue, "Burial Rites" by Hannah Kent, "Christmas Eve Kittens" by Wilma Counts, Cathleen Clare and Debbie Raleigh, "Every day" by David Levithan, "Der Kristallpalast" (The Crystal Palace) by Oliver Plaschka, Alexander Flory and Matthias Mösch; I'm currently reading "Time of the Magicians" by Wolfram Eilenberger and anxiously awaiting Hannah Kent's most recent book "Devotion" to be translated to my native language.
I am very bad at accurately sorting books into genres, but I'd guess most of the books I've read may be classified as YA, though I personally don't know what classifies a book as YA apart from "is written with young adults as the target group," but that's too broad a description to be useful to anyone in my opinion, heh. Some things I've read I'd sort into (also way too broadly classified) stuff like romance (Christmas Eve Kittens), crime or detective fiction [Krimi in german combines both] (for kids The Three Investigators and The Famous Five, and arguably for adults Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot though I've only seen Poirot films not yet read Poirot books, shame on me!), horror (Fear Street series as horror for kids and Lovecraft for adults), historical fiction (books by Hannah Kent and Emma Donoghue, Lilac Girls), historical nonfiction (Time of the Magicians and The Visionaries by Wolfram Eilenberger), steampunk (Der Kristallpalast, World Shaker, Steamed, Magierdämmerung), nonfiction (Zoo Station: The Story of Christiane F.), poetry (Heinrich Heine and Edgar Allan Poe) among other things like light-hearted children's books (St. Clare's series).
Some of the aforementioned books are classified as YA, and in my opinion reasonably so, though I do believe that classifying YA as a genre itself is quite useless since it only describes the target group but barely describes what a book is about, if that makes sense.
If I had to write down some classifiers for YA, I'd say it's maybe books that are written in a way that's accessible to a person who is no longer a child but still may be likely to not have experienced much of the adult world yet and may not necessarily be very well-read or knowledgeable about more "mature" topics on a deeper level. I'd guess that for example a book that's about topics that people may have come into contact with during their adolescence in some way may be YA like drugs (Blue Highway by Diane Tullson) and emotional rollercoasters and bullying (Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher, Easy Meat by Maureen Stewart) and stalking (Unheimliche Nähe by Patricia Schröder) and mental illnesses like eating disorders (Jeansgröße 0 by Brigitte Blobel) or depression and physical ilnesses (Before I Die by Jenny Downham, Skellig by David Almond though it's mainly about fantasy and arthritis isn't the focal point if I'm not misremembering) etc. (all of the examples are YA I've read and would also classify as such) or maybe a book that contains entry-level knowledge about philosophy that you may have learned in school or that you may yourself have come across in some way unrelated to school but that doesn't require deeper knowledge on that topic or on specific philosophers or philosophy schools for its target audience to understand well...
Now that I've forgotten whatever point I wanted to make: sorry for rambling, I've been sitting in your askbox trying to remember the titles and looking up their translations and the authors' names for the past hour or so instead of doing the household chores I had planned to do today lol. Off to eat bread for lunch because now I'm too hungry to cook, oops.

I'm currently reading Invitation to a Banquet: The Story of Chinese Food by Fuchsia Dunlop.
I don't have any books I want to thrust upon everyone. I think that's a good way to breed haters for things I love.
In general, favorite authors of mine are... hmm... Agatha Christie, Tamara Allen, Loretta Chase, Georgette Heyer, Mary Elizabeth Braddon... IDK. It's hard to think of people off the top of my head. I like the current indie "m/m romance" scene in English, but it feels like it's still early days for that industry, and I can't think of a lot of authors I love who have multiple series and who aren't going through a career slump. (Like I love Jordan L. Hawk in general, but his latest stuff isn't making me rush to read more even if I'm still backing his Patreon. KJ Charles not only irritated me with dumb posts but started writing suckier books till I no longer buy her at all.)
I've read a lot of Golden Age detective fiction and some hard boiled US stuff (think 1930s and 40s). I've probably reread those sorts of books more than any others. While I certainly have authors I like, I only very, very rarely reread anything, and a lot of what I read is by non-prolific or long-dead people, so I don't have a bunch of names I go to the bookstore for currently.
My grandmother owned a fuckton of Three Investigators books, so I devoured those as a kid, though I think most Americans my age don't care about them.
I read in Spanish too. The only thing I've gotten through a lot of that springs to mind is the capitan Alatriste series. In general, if I travel somewhere Spanish speaking, I'll try to pick up some books, but I usually end up with things that are too highfallutin and literary for my taste or that are real downers. (Plus I'm a slow reader in Spanish, so the more literary stuff is a slog.) I like fun trash, and most of the fun trash I've seen on bookshelves is translated American romance novels and that kind of thing. I'll read in translation, but not if it's from English.
I do read manga in Japanese, but I'm not anywhere near good enough to read novels at this point.

Nicolaia Rips: How are you guys? You’re all individually at home hanging?
Lucy Dacus: Phoebe and I both just got back from, what, five weeks of being away or more. I’m jet-lagged. I was sleepy at 7 p.m. and I had a friend come over and kind of push me until 10 p.m. so I wouldn’t fall asleep while the sun was out.
Nicolaia Rips: How’s tour?
Lucy Dacus: The tour, like, all of it has been awesome. Our next show is Boston. Right? Or is it New Haven? I don’t know. (Julien pops into the zoom, just the tip of her baseball hat as she slowly emerges into frame.)
Julien Baker: My phone died and then I just...Hi, I’m here now.
Nicolaia Rips: If boygenius was a family who’s the middle child, who’s the eldest?
Phoebe Bridgers: Am I the youngest?
LD: No!
JB: No. You’re not youngest! I’m youngest.
LD: Julien’s youngest.
PB: You also are literally the youngest.
LD: Is it boring to say that it’s just how the ages are? Me and Phoebe are both older sisters to younger brothers and Julian is an only child. I think you’re big sis Phoebe. Big brother. Big sis was weird.
PB: My brother calls me sis to give me the ick. He’s like, I love how they do it on TV. They’re always like, “what’s up, sis?” Who the fuck calls their sister that?
NR: The film [directed by Kristen Stewart]. The record. Can you talk about the finality of “The.” What other “The” would you want to do in the future?
LD: The amusement park, uh, the strip club...
JB: The musical!
PB: It’s cool because we wouldn’t do that in our solo work. I think it just highlights the specialness of the time. Like we’re setting out to make the boygenius things right now.
LD: It’s also acknowledging a bit of hype, which is fun because we’re members of the boygenius fandom ourselves. So, people asking for the record, we’re able to give them the record.
NR: What makes something a boygenius song versus a solo?
LD: At least for me, context changes what I write about, and how I write. So, we just decided to be each other’s context for a couple years. It’s not some big secret, we chose to do this, to devote space and time.
NR: Your music feels so vulnerable yet there’s always this play. How do you feel your senses of humor factor into your work?
PB: It’s silly. We kind of enable each other. I feel like there have been several times where I’m like, am I allowed to write this? And the boys were like, yeah, obviously.
NR: What’s on the essential boygenius book list? The Book Club?
LD: Myth of Sisyphus.
PB: Stop!
LD: What are books that we’ve all read? Like Carmen Maria Machado, both of her books. The Sympathizer, we all loved. Letters to a Young Poet.
JB: I’ve heard y’all reference a lot and it’s nice to feel like ideas, instead of slipping into like a landfill or whatever, get recycled to me. I don’t know, I just like hearing y’all talk about books that I haven’t read too.
PB: That’s my main experience. I’m always the one that did not read the thing. I read way more because of this band which is so tight.
JB: I feel like you’re always reading essays on some lane of art and I’m just like, dang, all I read was a graphic novel and Sartre again.
LD: Sartre again. Y’all have podcasts. I’m completely out for the podcast conversation.
JB: Phoebe got me into podcasts. I used to just be like, it’s not radio, I don’t understand it. All the podcasts I listen to are just things [Phoebe] told me to listen to —99 PI, Hidden Brain.
PB: I do not have the strength to have thoughts when I’m doing things.
NR: I was listening to My Favorite Murder a while ago and was like, wait a second. Is that Phoebe Bridgers??
PB: I felt so nervous. I think that’s the last time I had actual stage fright.
LD: Is that the one where you say, “yeah, me and my friend Lucy kissed” and then everyone freaked out?
PB: Now, no one could possibly get freaked out by us kissing. It’s just part of it. “I went to a Boygenius show and Julien and Phoebe or Lucy and Phoebe kissed.”
JB: There’s a picture of me and Lucy and my mom asked if it was the guitarist from Muna because I think she saw one picture of me and Joe [Maskin] kissing and thinks we’re dating. Mom, you’re on Twitter? Like she’s following me? I felt love.

NR: Who are your favorite unsung girl geniuses of history?
LD: Nick Drake’s mom, Molly Drake. She is an incredible poet and songwriter and pianist. They re-released a collection of her works recently. You can hear how Nick Drake was obviously inspired by her as her kid.
PB: Emily Bronte’s brother.
LD: We went to the Bronte mansion. Mansion. I just mixed up the Biltmore Mansion and the Bronte house because we also...
PB: We love to go to old places that people lived in.
LD: It’s like we’re trying to get haunted. We all showed up upset to the Bronte Museum and then in the first room they were like, “here’s the couch where Emily Bronte died of tuberculosis at age 30.” Now
whenever we’re all upset and it’s hard to get out of, we call it Brontitis. Emily and Anne had a brother named Branwell. Branwell Bronte who was a great artist. But he was underappreciated and wished he could be more like his sisters. (Phoebe has been roaming her house for the entire interview, white blonde hair streaming behind her, angles the camera down at a pug sitting alone on a large baroque couch.)
PB: Maxine Bridgers.
LD: I think Maxine’s pretty sung. She’s not unsung at all.
JB: Maxine’s sung.
NR: What were you about to say?
JB: Hilma af Klint. But obviously things come in tides of awareness. Something that’s unsung to me doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unsung in fine visual art.
PB: She was unsung in her life.
JB: But that was a choice, right? She was like, don’t publish anything or show my work until fifty years after my death.
PB: So sick.
NR: Going back to this haunting thing. Have you ever been haunted?
LD: We’ve been talking about this. Unclear.
JB: I was haunted! I was haunted!
LD: Julien was haunted.
JB: I was haunted. It was...demon. I don’t think it was a ghost.
LD: I have witnessed haunting but personally, I’m a clean vessel.
JB: What the fuck. This [interview] is so...
PB: My dating life in my early fucking twenties for sure was haunted.
LD: Are we just calling abuse haunting now? Ok. Well, I was haunted when I was in my early twenties too. (They all laugh.)
PB: Born haunted, dude,
JB: Born haunted just took me by surprise.
LD: That’s generational trauma babe.
JB: I had an apartment with bad vibes.
LD: Julien had an apartment where someone was murdered and rolled up in a carpet and put in a closet.
PB: Wait, was that the apartment that I was in? Yo? OK. UM. (Immediate chattering over each other.)
LD: How have we not talked about this? Julien recently said that she was told [about the murder] upon moving in and was like, bet, I’ll just be here.
PB: That does not surprise me.
LD: And then all that shit went down and you didn’t move. I can’t believe it.
JB: Let me tell you how metaphorical this shit was. Basically, they [realtors] just painted some stuff a hip color of green and put a pool in and doubled the rent. And I was like, okay, I’ll mime being an adult and pay way too much money for this apartment in the right part of town, to be the right kind of person, with all my cool East Nashville friends or whatever. And it was just full of murder and history. I did not have a good time there and I was all alone. That place had bad vibes. Top to bottom.
LD: Bad vibes is the most, like, inane way you could say what was happening in that apartment.

JB: Before I’d only ever lived in houses like on a yoga mat or with five other people who were in six different bands. Moving there and being like, nice a dishwasher, and it was this spot where somebody had been like, “I think there’s a murder” and the cops came and were like, no murder here. But there was! He was just rolled up in a carpet, and then the cops came back because of the smell and then they were like, oh, there was a murder. Anyway, that’s where I lived.
LD: You got way more info than you bargained for with that question.
NR: I don’t know how to transition here, wow. Do you feel like you’re optimists or pessimists?
LD: I’m an optimist.
NR: Didn’t sound very convincing.
LD: I’m the devil’s advocate for the best-case scenario. I don’t think it’s gonna be like that, but I might as well petition for it.
JB: I would like to say I am a present tense pessimist and a future optimist. I’m like, let’s not make light of how much it sucks right now. It does not help the situation to say, “it could always be worse” or to say, “it’s not that bad.” I’m an optimist when I’m with you guys. Like, this is a pretty sick day we’re living,
LD: Our whole Europe tour was awesome. And then we all had one terrible day.
PB: That is so true. I was like, this day isn’t hell, this is actually my usual self on tour. We had one day like that in our whole time together this year. (Phoebe cleans the crust out of her dog’s nose.)
NR: Are you cleaning your dog’s nose?
PB: She’s been with her grandma and her nose fold is so full of crust. I can’t believe it.
LD: I love her. I want her to come sneeze on me.
(Now Julien shows her dog who’s “camera shy.” Lucy sings, “I love you” to both dogs.)
NR: What’s your ultimate love song?
LD: I have a lot of answers. I Went To The Store One Day by Father John Misty. I think that’s a great song. There’s a compilation of love songs of Nina Simone. A lot of perfect love songs on that.
PB: For You by Laura Marling is a great song.
JB: I’m trying to think of an answer that isn’t Options by Pedro the Lion.
PB: That’s not a love song, dude.
LD: We’re not accepting that answer anymore.
JB: That’s 100% a love song.
LD: Don’t say that. I have a playlist called “Perfect Love Song”. Who Knows Where The Time Goes by Nina Simone. I Need Your Love So Bad by Irma Thomas. Dance Song by Dijon. P.S. LD: No, I’ll make the playlist name and then I’ll wait for the songs.
PB: I agree and then I’m curating forever.
LD: Never finished, always growing. It’s more of a catalog or an archive than a playlist that I would send to somebody. It’s a research tool.
JB: I have a playlist called “Queerly Specific” that’s all about coming out from a place of being in love. All songs about that. Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens. The one where he kisses his friend.
PB: My mom banned it from the house. She was like do not play the cancer song ever again.
LD: Reservations by Wilco. Modern Romance by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
JB: Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod by The Mountain Goats. Do you know that tune?
PB: No.
JB: Oh, ok. It’s a good one. They have a lot of good love songs because they’re like little vignettes of like living with a person and all the little intricate weirdo shit they do, which is what I ultimately think comprises a lot of love. Just checking out somebody’s weirdo shit.

Eric’s sensational 2017 Anthology album is definitely one of his best albums (and in my firm opinion, ALL of his solo work is *chefs kiss* bellissimo) i have nothing negative to say about any of his work. every album he’s ever made is pure perfection. my only caveat about this album—that he didn’t keep the name Eric’s Mind Revisted. i rather like that as an album title, it sounds sexy. shoulda kept that title honey tsk tsk.
everyone wants to moan and groan about how “bossy” he is. well guess what, he has every right to be! his assertiveness and tendency to be dominant has led him to be one of the most successful musicians in the industry, and of his generation even.
this is a man who put his entire heart and soul into producing and engineering the timeless hit “I’m Not In Love.” he took 3 men’s voices and multiplied them by 256 all while only using tape loops. 256 VOICES! WITH JUST TAPE LOOPS!
OUGH..it never ceases to amaze me how brilliant and tremendously talented this man is as a musician. i’m so SOO proud of him. everything he touches is pure magic.

Namjoon watches the metronome on his desk tick... tick... tick..., ignoring the glare of the monitor screens in front of him.
There are two. One's open on the definition of a word that's been lodged in his frontal lobe for months, now, and the other is crammed full to the brim with dark grey producing software that he's sick of seeing. The windows open encase remnants of love songs that he can't seem to finish. 
It's not for a lack of trying. Just impossible, he thinks. 
They're an amalgamation of a love he never thought he'd lose, and the hopes of a future basking in it; notes of adoration dedicated to a devotion he didn't realise was quite so delicate, until his clumsy hands got a hold of it. 
Mementoes for memories he can't bring himself to relive, they sit; solemn, unchanged. It's been like this for months. They're artefacts, now. Relics. Souvenirs. Trophies of a conquest he never entirely won; a bygone era in which his hair was lighter and the sun shone more frequently. Eventually, they'll be laid to rest in the paper waste icon down in the far corner of his screen. 
No good. Not fit for use. Discarded before they've reached full maturity. 
"Maturity," he mimics the screen with great contempt. He's 25. Brain's developed. Science says so. 
And yet the loss he's mourning is all thanks to his perceived 'maturity,' or lack thereof. 
It's not like you're dead, or anything dramatic like that. He knows he's being irrational. Knows his immaturity is shining through as he wallows in self-pity, four empty takeout cups of coffee waiting to be thrown away on the edge of his desk. He only leaves the studio to shower. 
Doesn't even really sleep much these days. Has grown a little stubble; wonders if maybe that would make you think he was more mature. More grown-up. He sneers a little as he jots down a lyric idea; something about fine wine, how it ages, and how it was ironic you preferred cheap-as-shit soju instead of the bottles in his cooler.
In fact, when he really thinks about it, Namjoon thinks you were fucking mad to cite 'maturity' as a reason for you to break up. 
He's old before his time; grew up quickly cause he didn't have a choice. Took it as an insult when you said 'we're at different stages in our lives.' Knows damn well he'd have stood on any stage with you. Fuck Wembley, fuck Jamsil, fuck SoFi. Fuck 'em all if they meant he couldn't have you.
But Namjoon would never give it up. You knew this at the time, and truthfully, so did he. 
You would have never asked him to - but you can't dictate your life around him, and his plans, and his obligations. You've desires and goals of your own. Five years his senior, the impending pressures of your friends settling down - celebrating milestone anniversaries, moving back to your hometown to raise their families after their wild twenties spent in the big cities - was getting to you. It felt like you were lagging behind. 
Whether either of you liked it or not, your relationship was a huge factor in that. You couldn't even tell your friends you were dating him. It's not like you ever wanted a huge legacy, but the erasure of your history together hurt. 
A year of your life has been lost to a relationship that you can never speak of. There's an NDA. And even if there wasn't, you've too much respect for him to ever go against his wishes, or put him in a situation that could implode everything he's worked so tirelessly for.
So yeah, maybe you were out of line when you said he was immature, but no adult woman wants to live her life in hiding.
Nor does he - but he thinks the fact he that makes the conscious choice to live his life so privately is mature. Thinks if you were ever to call him, he'd block you. Show you what immature really looks like.
But you never do, so he never will.
Instead, he just scoffs again. "Immature," he mutters, shaking his head as he slouches into his desk chair. It spins ever so gently, Namjoon too irritated to stop it - but then he's facing the sofa and he's right back where he started.
See, Namjoon has been thinking a lot about you lately. It's time to submit his mixtape to the company; time for them to approve it for release. Trouble is, he hasn't been able to work on it since you left. 
You've been in California for eight months. Since last August. Eight fucking months, and he hasn't touched a single thing, because it's all tainted with you. Stained. Ruined. 
It's your favourite classical symphony sampled beneath the opening track; your lyrical suggestion in the bridge of his third track; your name he wordplays into obscurity on his fifth track. No one would ever be able to decipher it. It's just for him.
A little bit of you preserved forevermore; from a time when you were still his.
Kind of like the folder his mouse is hovering over. 
It's password protected. Called 'drafts'. Looks inconspicuous. Just another plain folder icon. Nothing interesting. At least, it looks that way. 
He can't bring himself to get rid of it - and yet the tick... tick... tick... of his metronome becomes the click-click-click of his mouse as he follows the electronic pathway back to you.  
Namjoon enters the password. Knows he shouldn't. Knows he should also change the password, because typing in your birthday is fucking painful at this point.  
There are six files in the folder. Voice notes. Audio files marked with dates and time stamps of last summer. 
Above anything, he knows he shouldn't press play.
But he's 'immature'. Of course he'll do what he shouldn't - or at least that's how the voice in his head taunts him as he presses down on the play icon.
"Is it going?" Your voice echoes into the room. You giggle. Namjoon hears himself confirm that it is. He can picture it now. Remembers the shirt of his you'd been wearing after he'd snuck you into the company building. Knows exactly which part of his studio sofa you'd been on. "Okay, okay. Cool. What do you want me to do?"
"Just speak."
His voice sounds tender. Far softer than it does these days. He thinks he's grown since back then. Thinks he's matured. Thinks maybe if you'd have met him now, instead of then, perhaps it would have lasted.
"About what?" You had said with a laugh, and Namjoon finds himself burying his head in his hands at his desk.
"Anything. Everything. Your mind fascinates me, gorgeous."
"You're the one with genius-level, IQ," you had fondly teased him. "No one more fascinating than you. Did you really have to wear those sweats, though? You know they turn my mind to jelly."
"I can take them off, if it'll help."
"Keep them on," your voice had lowered. In the studio, Namjoon groans into his hands. Knows what's coming next. "Wanna see how much of a mess I make when I ride your-"
His nimble fingers race to the space bar, pausing the audio clip. Has listened to it enough times to know exactly what happens afterwards. 
It's not like he needs the recording to remember. He remembers it all. 
Remembers the semi he'd had at the time, and how the way you'd looked at him had him growing to full stiffness. Remembers the way you'd carried on talking nonsense when you were straddled across his thigh; and the way the conversation had dissolved into you being incredibly vocal about exactly what you wanted him to do with you. To you. For you.
And so it had become a goal: he'd been after the perfect moan to hide deep within the layers of his closing track. Would record you every now and again in the midst of a fuck. Would tell you how good you sound, how much he wants the world to hear you. Would say shit like 'you've got a voice that'll ruin lives, gorgeous,' or something about Augustine, and how he'd have never converted to celibacy if he'd have met you. Would whine along with you, and thank the lucky stars his apartment spanned over two floors - his poor neighbours probably would have complained, otherwise. 
He puffs out his cheeks and sighs. Tilts his head back against the top of his chair, and lets his hand fall to his crotch. He palms it slightly; firm from the thoughts of your clammy body sticking to his, and the musky scent that he wished he could have bottled up for times like these.
"Get a grip," he berates himself, and spins back to the desk. He needs to get his feelings out. Speak them into existence. Admit that he misses you, and that he's been a bit of a mess since you've been gone. His mental block isn't going away anytime soon, so he may as well try a little honesty in its place. 
He opens up the software for the mic that he keeps on his desk for rough recordings, and clicks on the red circle. Kind of feels kind of like a stop sign to him.
"Stop what?" he questions into the void. "Thinking about her? Avoiding her favourite coffee shop, even though it was mine too? Wasting all this fucking space in my brain like it's a storage unit for memories of her? I don't want them. I don't need them. Why can't I let them go? Why is she still in my head? And why am I scared of the day she won't be?"
He rambles and he rambles. Cries not once but four times.  Goes on and on about why you're the fucking worst, and then he spirals into how much he loves the way you laugh, and how he's never felt anything better than your arms wrapped around his waist. Gushes about how committed you are to your work, and how much he's in awe of the way you prioritise yourself. Is proud when he mentions your achievements; is pissed off when he mentions the little quirks of yours he didn't love.
They're lies, of course. He loved everything you did - but it makes him feel better to feign hatred.
Makes him feel like it was his choice. Like he's the one who left. 
He's pulled from his thoughts when his phone begins to ring. It's on loud, so he lets it ring for a bit. Knows it could sound good on the recording. He reaches over for his phone and rubs his spare hand over his face to psyche himself up. 
It's probably just Yoongi, he thinks, like it normally is, wondering if he's at the office building. He doesn't check the caller ID - just answers it and automatically switches to speakerphone. 
"Wassup?" He says into the receiver, far chirpier than he was during his rant. He's still a little dry, but he's performing now. Pretending like everything is fine.
There's a moment of silence. Namjoon's eyes flick to his phone screen. Checks the caller ID. Blood runs cold.
And then, there's a 'hey.' 
Namjoon is the silent one, now. Doesn't know what to fucking say - and thankfully, you hate empty spaces in conversations. 
So you fill it. 
"I quit my job," you tell him. 
Why you think he would care is beyond him.
But the last he knew, you loved your job. Something feels... uneasy within him. He remains silent. Lets you speak.
"There's a red-eye flight that leaves in four hours. LA to Seoul. I know it's..." You cut yourself off, struggling to find the right words to say. "Look, I know it's been eight months, and I know it's been rough. I thought I could do this whole 'life' thing without you, Nam, but... Fuck. I don't think I can. I... I think maybe I was the one who needed to mature. I know I put you through hell, but if I get on that flight, will you be there at the other end?"
It's a simple question, really - yes or no - yet it feels so much heavier than that. Feels like commitment. Feels like something he isn't ready for. Feels like something you rescinded your right to a long fucking time ago.
And so Namjoon laughs. It's cold. Is guaranteed to make you cry. He doesn't care.
"No."
The call ends, his finger forcefully tapping on the red button of his phone. He knows it'll hurt. Thinks 'good'. Reckons you deserve it. 
But then he's scrambling; dialling your number back, holding his phone to ear, stomach in his throat, heart in tatters, swallowing back tears that threaten to fall on his part. 
Being a cunt was much less satisfying than he thought it would be. In fact, if anything, it makes him feel even fucking worse. 
All he wants is to see you. It's the only thing he wants.
You take a while to answer. He was right. It did make you cry. Mainly because you know you do deserve it. 
There's no 'hello' when you answer. You say sorry, instead. "It was out of line for me to ask."
"Yeah," he says. "Kinda was."
"I just... I had to know. Eight months is a long time, isn't it? It's really fucking long."
Namjoon pauses. Bites down on his lip as it shakes. Sighs. "The flight... when does it land?"
"Nine-thirty."
"A.M.?"
"Yes."
"Into Incheon?"
"Uh-huh."
He can hear the tears you're fighting. Wonders if you can hear his. 
"Get the flight," he finally says. "I'll meet you there."
"Wait... are you sur-"
He doesn't let you finish. He's had eight months of fucking torture without you. Eight months to think about all the things he wishes he could have done differently, eight months to play scenarios in his head. Eight months. 
He can't go through it again. Can't be without you. It's too fucking hard. 
"Get your ass on that flight," he says, stern in his tone. 
"It's one-way," you warn him.
And even though you can't see him, you know there's a dimple in his cheek. Know he's smiling. Know it feels like a weight has lifted from his chest, because it feels that way for you, too.
"It better fucking be."

After Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker received well-deserved criticism for giving a bigoted and misogynist commencement speech at a conservative Catholic college, right-wing media types went into a tizzy, claiming Butker was being “canceled.”
“Nothing about the right-wing reaction is surprising, because the idea that there is an all-pervasive, all-powerful threat to free speech called ‘cancel culture’ has become a central tenet of modern conservatism,” Stewart explained. “They celebrate their being silenced at conferences. They celebrate their being silenced on podcasts and streaming outlets. They celebrate their being silenced with over 700 book titles about being ‘canceled.’” Stewart showed clips of Fox News’ Sean Hannity lamenting the outrage of those on the left, and even claiming that he, Sean Hannity, "doesn't get outraged" when he doesn’t agree with someone else. "They're so full of shit that Sean Hannity can say with a square head, 'I'm not the kind of guy who gets outraged.'” Stewart exclaimed. “Sean Hannity! He's basically just a meat-bag support system for a forehead vein." "But contrary to conservatives’ victimization complex, there is no organized cancel culture conspiracy where even the slightest misstep can 100% get someone on the right ‘canceled,’” Steward said. “But actually, there is—oh, there is one." 
On Monday's edition of Comedy Central's The Daily Show, rotating host Jon Stewart skewered the right-wing obsession of whining about cancel culture while simultaneously conducting acts of cancel culture at those opposed to their backwards cult.
