Chapter 30: Home Remedies

Natasha and Rebecca only stayed in the medbay overnight.  They were home within a day and we quickly went back to normal life.  Things were getting hectic now with three infants and two toddlers but we still outnumbered them and we had the benefit of having staff to help.  Not just the nannies but cooks and cleaners and people to do laundry.  It meant we were free just to take care of the kids and for those still working, they had that too.  With all of us, we had this rotating wheel of people ready for midnight feelings, diaper changes, bedtime stories, trips to school, baths, and playtime.  No one was exactly well-rested, but no one was exhausted either.

One thing that was becoming increasingly clear though, Rose, Rebecca, and Sarah adored their older brother and sister.  All three infants’ gazes went automatically to where Riley and Pietro were in the room.  When they were fussy, it only took Riley and Pietro coming over and talking to them or playing with a toy in their line of view for them to quiet again, and when Rose and Sarah reached six weeks old and began to smile, they always had one for their big brother and sister.

Riley and Pietro still generally found the babies a little boring and thought they needed a little too much attention, but they were generally doing okay with the new babies in the house and as the babies started to be able to a little more, they began to warm up to them.  We each tried to make sure we spent proper quality time with each of them one-on-one at least once a week so that they never felt like they were neglected or overlooked by anyone.

The last big thing we were all waiting for was Edwin to arrive.

Unfortunately, he had other plans.  As my due date came and went I became more uncomfortable and exhausted.  I just wanted him out but he was determined to stay put.  I tried a few natural remedies.  I was eating spicy food and drinking raspberry leaf tea.  The others were ready and available to give me a massage whenever I asked.   I was walking the kids to school, and spending a lot of time doing yoga and swimming, (even if that meant taking Riley and Pietro down to the pool with me).  I even had Tony take me on long drives, making sure to hit every bit of bumpy road in the Tri-State area to try and get things going.  I was having sex every night and often during the day to try and get labor started, and on the day after Edwin’s due date I called in my prize from Sam and we had a marathon sex session while the kids were at school where he made me come to the point I ended up tapping out exhausted - but still that kid was determined to stay put.

I was desperate and stressed, which was doing nothing to help the situation because my blood pressure was going up, which only made Doctor Schroeder more adamant that if it didn’t happen naturally soon, it would have to be a c-section.

I came home from an appointment distraught.  Doctor Schroeder had told me that I would need to come in the following day and if my blood pressure hadn’t gone back down then it was time to intervene.

“Come on, sweetheart,” Steve said as our group came through the door.  “I’ll take you up and give you a nice relaxing massage, and you can have a nap.  We’ll get that blood pressure back down.”

I shook my head, and Bruce patted his shoulder.  “You heard the doc,” he said. “These things happen.  El knew there was the potential that she’d have to have another cesarean.  It’s no one’s fault and it’s better he gets here and everyone is safe and sound, right?”

“Right,” I said with a nod.  Of course, that was true, but it didn’t make me feel a whole lot better.

Steve led me up to our bedroom and dimmed the lights.  I stripped down naked while he lit some candles.  “See if you can sleep after this,” he said.  “The kids will be back from school when you wake up, and we can take them down to the pool together if you like.”

“I’ll try,” I said, and sat down in the special massage chair Tony had got for us.

“Shea or Mango?”  Steve asked.

They’re walking through the park. It’s warm, that first solid week of spring when all signs of winter are out of sight, out of mind, and the flowers begin to bud. They’re hand in hand, strolling down the sidewalk path. Neither is really talking, save for simple phrases, lines about the weather and a bird over yonder and what they’ll have for dinner. Things are good for them right now. 

Roy takes mental notes of the dogs. He turns to Jason, ever so suddenly. The corner of his lip rises and he looks down at the ground thoughtfully. 

“What are your thoughts on getting a dog?” 

Jason chuckles. They spend the rest of the afternoon spit-balling names back and forth. They spend the following day picking out chew toys and a leash and collar and harness and food bowls and a bed at the local pet store. By the weekend they’re at the shelter, wandering up and down aisles of kennels. They find a pitbull named Raptor. Jason chats with the receptionist and fills out adoption papers. Roy sits with the dog on the ground, covering him in kisses, scratches, and belly rubs. Jason smiles at the sight.

They just finished dinner, a roast chicken with mashed potatoes and corn. Jason cooked the majority of it, and he does the dishes now, scrubbing away at their plates and setting them aside to be dried. He hears Roy enter the kitchen and teases him with a comment about having to do dishes alone. No response. He rolls his eyes and shuts the water off, drying his hands, ready to say something else, but Roy beats him to it.

“What are your thoughts on marriage?”

Jason’s jaw drops the slightest bit. He turns around. Roy is knelt before him on the ground, a look of pure wonder on his face. One hand is caressing an open box, revealing a simple gold ring. The other reaches out for Jason. He grabs that hand, pulling Roy up. There’s a foot of space between the two and neither’s quite sure what to do. It doesn’t matter. It can’t possibly matter. They spend the night covering one another in kisses, drinking the finest wine their cupboard could serve them, straight from the bottle. They make plans. They aren’t in a rush, but they are in love, and perhaps there isn’t much of a difference. 

Their wedding is small. Immediate family and friends only. Alfred walks Jason down the aisle. They marry and eat cake and Dick gives a speech about each of the grooms and they spend the night dancing to a shitty playlist put together by Tim. Oliver and Bruce try to outdo each other with wedding gifts. And at the end of the night, when it’s just the pair of them, Red Hood and Arsenal, Robin and Speedy, Jason and Roy, they hold one another close and talk in soft voices, breath entwining, much like their bodies beneath the sheets. They speak of love and promises. 

Months later. Roy is working at the dining room table, clicking away on his laptop. Jason is in the living room, rereading Hamlet for the umpteenth time, twisting his wedding ring around on his finger. He loves that damn ring. Once so afraid of the weight it might bring, he’s been met with the utter opposite. He finds relief in it all. In having someone to hold onto when the nights get long, look forward to on the stressful days, lounge with when the outside world is gray and he’s in need of a day off. They work together. Everything aligned so perfectly, fit so snugly, like pieces of a puzzle. 

Jason’s never been happier.

He looks up now and is met with the image of Roy standing in the door frame, laptop in his hands still.

“What are your thoughts on a house with a white picket fence?”

They move to the middle of the country, far from both Gotham and Star City. They hang up their capes and never touch a weapon again. Their days open up and begin to be spent painting the walls of the house. Their nights are spent cuddled up on the couch, Jason reading aloud to Roy and Raptor, exposing them to worlds they’d never before tasted, never even thought to step foot in. 

With bliss comes rain and when it rains it pours. They just had a big fight. Each party said things he didn't mean, and though they both know they weren’t coming from truthful places, neither is ready to apologize just yet. 

They sit side by side on their bed, a few feet between them. Both stare absently at the wall. They won’t go to bed angry, it’s something they both agreed on. Still, this waiting game doesn’t seem to be going anywhere and it’s getting late. Roy has work early the next morning, Jason an appointment. 

It’s half past one when Roy breaks the silence. He gnaws on his cheek, straightens his back, bows his head and looks at his husband out of the corner of his eye. 

“What are your thoughts on kids?”

Jason’s shoulders drop, all pent-up tension released in a single second. He crawls across the bed and falls into Roy’s lap, wrapping arms around a slender waist. They stay up late dreaming up a family. 

Jason doesn’t make it to his appointment that day. Roy calls in sick to work.

Over the course of the next few years, they adopt three children, who they love as much as if they were their own. Their house becomes chaotic, the good kind. Jason cooks family meals and cleans up and gets the kids to school. Roy works as an engineer for some company and comes home every day to his husband and children. 

When the kids are asleep, and the house is still, and the night is a haven in opposed to a battleground, Jason and Roy still snuggle up on the couch for Jason to read aloud to his husband, their dog at their feet. It’s a particular night. Jason’s back is against Roy’s chest, Roy’s fingers are running through Jason’s hair as he reads Picture of Dorian Gray. There’s a candle burning on the coffee table, and a small, warm lamp is turned on from its place on an end table, but besides that, the house is dark, it’s sleepy, it’s homey. Roy trails kisses down Jason’s neck.

“What are your thoughts on me?” He begs, a whisper.

Jason smiles. It’s been twelve years since he was first asked that. He remembers his response to it then: a passionate kiss, a skipped patrol, a night in bed together. He had been young, full of fear, yet lust, yet a deep, growing love for this boy before him. And now, today, tonight, he sits with twelve years of experience in his back pocket.

He’s fallen in love with Roy. With his hands, freckles, eyes, cupids bow, back dimples. With his corny jokes, useless inventions, stupid catch phrases that aren’t catchy in the slightest. With his mannerisms, the essence of him, the ins, the outs, the very existence that is Roy William Harper.

Jason’s heart swells, it’s warm, his head is an eruption of butterflies and he simply thinks to himself, “I love him.”

“My thoughts, Roy Harper, love of my life, father of my children,” Jason starts slowly, taking small breaks between words, as if sounding it all out, warming up to the water before jumping in head first. “Are that I love you, and that you complete me.”

Roy buries his face in the crook of Jason’s neck. “God, I fucking love you.”

They fall asleep there, on the couch, a tangled mess of limps and a book discarded to the floor. They awake the next morning to their children bouncing atop them. They spend the Saturday as a family. Roy plays a board game with the youngest two while Jay helps the eldest with a history assignment in the kitchen. In the midst of it all, they exchange a look, a knowing look, a loving one, one which promises so much, one which reads, ‘we’ve made it.’

Fates Be Damned - fic

Characters: Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne, Damian Wayne, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Cassandra Cain, Selina Kyle Summary: Batman Incorporated was waging war against Leviathan. But Dick would be damned if he let Damian become a casualty to this fight. A/N: A fix it for Batman Inc. 4 from like five years ago!!! Because I’m clearly up with the times. Bruce’s starting dialogue is from that issue. I don’t want to call this a hurt/comfort fic, because it’s not a happy ending for everyone, and I’d be interested in anyone thoughts on the ending I chose because it’s not a ‘everything tied up neatly’ kind of ending like I tend to do. Anyways, this all happens over a year as hinted at. Alfred was away in the last part, and he is still in constant contact with Dick and Damian. Dick and Damian keep up their training, though really do enjoy not being vigilantes. No, Damian does not take Dick’s last name. Batcow and Goliath, of course, come with them to live in the ‘burbs, and the family visits often. Bruce does too, eventually.

It felt like someone shocked him. Or maybe slapped him, or just said the sky is falling.

Because this…this wasn’t happening, right?

He looked to his brothers, to Tim and Jason, and saw his own near-revulsion mirrored on their own faces.

So it wasn’t a dream. Or a miscommunication.

Here they were, in the middle of a goddamn war, all hands on deck. And Bruce just told one of their ranks, just told Damian – little, mostly innocent, eleven-year-old Damian – that he had to leave the life he chose, the life he loved, and go back to his mother, the one who hurt him more than anyone in the world.

And Damian’s face is wrecked. Dick had never seen this child cry, but here, there were tears in his eyes, and terror in his voice, as he tried to reason with Bruce, explain how much he gave up, how much he did. Just to belong, just to be loved by his old man.

How much he didn’t want to go.

But Bruce… Jesus Christ, Bruce just shook his head.

“If you don’t, Gotham, the world, will be plunged into chaos. And you, Damian…” Bruce sighed, like he was disappointed. “You’re going to be responsible…”

It was out of his mouth before he thought about it.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Dick snapped. Damian jumped in surprise, and Bruce turned so quick he may have given himself some sort of whiplash.

But any surprise Batman had immediately disappeared. “Excuse me?”

“He’s eleven, Bruce.” Dick hissed, balling his hands into fists. Damian had looked away now, stepped forward and grabbed Bruce’s cape to regain his attention, plead his case. “He’s eleven years old, your fucking son, and not only are you blaming him for this mess, you’re going to force him to go back to Talia?”

Bruce’s shoulders slumped. “Dick, you don’t understand…”

“The woman who put him through hell for most of his life?” Dick’s fury rose with every word, and he could feel his muscles start to shake with adrenaline. “The woman who put a fucking hit out on him, and you’re going to send him back to her?!”

“Dick…”

“No. No.” Dick started shaking his head. In his periphery he could see Tim and Jason glancing at each other, Damian still trying to take back Bruce’s attention. “You know what? No, I’m done. Because I let you take him back, I let you break up our partnership and regain guardianship even though I knew, deep down, it was a terrible idea, for both him and you. I let you uproot him and isolate him. I even let you abandon him for your rendezvous with Selina, or any time you felt the need to play Brucie Wayne halfway across the world.”

He stepped forward now, his breathing heavy as he got into Bruce’s face.

“But you must think I’m a goddamn idiot if you think I’m going to let you sacrifice him just because you and Talia can’t get along, and got the whole world involved in your stupid spat.” He poked Bruce in the chest now. Over and over, to emphasize his words. “Damian is innocent in this, and for you to have the audacity to blame him…” Dick bit his lip, and shook his head. “The needs of the many don’t outweigh the needs of the few. Not here. Not with your own fucking son, Bruce.”

“Dick, if there was another way you know I’d-”

“I’m done listening. I’m done being your soldier in this. I’m done letting you hurt him, for nothing.” Dick growled. Without waiting for a reply, he shoved past him to where Damian was standing, and scooped the boy up into his arms. “I’m taking him, and we’re going into hiding until this garbage is finished. I’ll help run computers with Oracle, and ping the communicators when I’m online.”

“Dick…!”

“I’m disappointed, Bruce.” Dick glanced back, just once, holding the back of Damian’s head. “You’ve made better plans in worse situations. And the one you settled on here, to save the day, was to sell your son back to the demon?” He narrowed his eyes. “Shame on you.”

Damian didn’t argue as Dick moved towards the door. Just wrapped his arms and legs as tightly around Dick as he dared. His breaths were shallow and hiccupped, and Dick could feel the tears splashing away from his cheeks.

“G-G-Grayson.” He murmured.

“I know.” He whispered, kissing Damian’s head. He couldn’t tell him it was okay. Because it was a lie, and Dick couldn’t do that to him. Not right now. “But I’ve got you.”

Damian dug his traumatized, trembling fingers into Dick’s neck.

“I’ve got you now, kiddo.”

Dick had been right, in the end. Bruce did come up with a better solution.

The world was saved. Talia and her army were dealt with. Blah, blah, blah.

That’d been about a month and a half ago, and it was still Dick’s kitchen table in a tiny rented house away from any city that Damian sat at every morning to eat his breakfast.

Bruce had called a week after the battle ended. Told Dick about the final fight between him and his once-lover, the injuries sustained. How everyone, from family to communities, were coping with the aftermath.

Dick listened politely, waiting for the real reason for the call.

“So…yeah. Everything has been settled. Talia won’t be bothering us again for a long time.” Bruce huffed, trying to be nonchalant. “You can…bring Damian home whenever it’s convenient for you.”

Bruce couldn’t see it, but Dick smiled. A sneering, cold, angry smile. “Who said I was bringing him home at all?”

And then he hung up.

Damian had been in the room during the call, drawing in the corner and taking pictures on his phone of his dozing pets. He’d heard everything Bruce said, just as he heard everything Dick said.

So when Dick tossed his phone on the table and looked up, it was no surprise that Damian was staring at him.

“What?”

“You…” Damian tilted his head thoughtfully. “You’re not making me go back to Father?”

Dick blinked as he leaned back in his chair. “Do you want to?”

Damian’s eyes lowered, his lips twisted in thought.

“…No.” He decided, looking back to his art. “I…after what happened, I…don’t think I’m ready to see Father yet.”

“Okay.” Dick smiled. “Sounds good to me.”

Dick turned on the TV. Damian went back to drawing.

It was no surprise when the Batman showed up at his door in the middle of the night.

“Took you long enough.” Dick muttered dryly when he answered the door with crossed arms. Stephanie, Batgirl, stood sheepishly behind him, clearly not wanting to be there as his partner.

“I need to see him.” Bruce growled.

“Well, he’s sleeping.” Dick smirked. “So how about you call again in the morning and make an appointment.”

“He’s my son, Dick.”

“Yeah, well.” Dick shrugged. “Maybe not anymore.”

And Dick knew Bruce well enough to see the hit that was coming, and block it.

“Oh, going to break into my house and beat me up?” Dick laughed, even as Stephanie tried to get between them. “Where was all this concern during you and Talia’s little tiff, hm?”

Before the fight could continue, there was a harsh whisper from further into the house. “Oh, will you two knock it off?”

Bruce hesitated, and glanced over Dick’s shoulder to find Tim standing at the mouth of another hallway. “If you two wake him up, I’m kicking you both out. He has a test in the morning and needs his rest.”

Bruce blinked, allowing Stephanie to push him away from Dick. “Test?” He looked at his eldest. “He’s in school?”

“Well he’s not getting private lessons from Alfred anymore, so I enrolled him here.” Dick pretended to dust dirt from his shoulders. “He’s still struggling with being a child genius and making friends, so Tim comes by and helps tutor him sometimes, since he knows what that’s like.”

“…This wasn’t a permanent move, Dick. For either of you.” Bruce scolded.

“Yeah, well. Maybe I decided it should be.” Dick spat. “He doesn’t need to be Robin, he doesn’t need to be out there on the streets like that anymore. And…maybe I don’t either. Haven’t thought about Nightwing once since we moved to the suburbs, if I’m honest.”

“Domesticated? You?” Steph snorted. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

“It’s wild, Steph.” Tim called from behind him.

Dick shot her a warm grin, but Bruce cut their own small moment off. “I want to speak to my son.”

“Well, A, I’m also your son and you’re speaking to me, so. You already have.” Dick mocked. “And B, you’ll talk to him when I say you can. Which is not right now.”

Bruce tried one of his tactics, pushed into Dick’s space and glared down at him. “He’s not your son, Dick.”

Dick shrugged, keeping his sneer. “Maybe he actually is.”

Dick smoothly backed away. “You’re welcome to a drink, snack or nap while you’re here. And if you don’t want any of those, then you can just get the fuck out, I guess.”

“Dick…” Tim sighed as Dick stood next to him.

Dick smiled. “You play host, Timmy. I’m beat. Mind if I hit the hay?”

He didn’t wait for an answer, just disappeared down the hall behind Tim.

Later, after he’d entertained Bruce and Stephanie, and gave them a little more insight into Dick and Damian’s new life – Dick’s job at a youth center, teaching each other how to cook, Damian’s friends – Tim checked on Dick before heading to the guest bedroom himself.

Dick wasn’t in his own room, and that didn’t surprise Tim at all. He sighed, turned to Damian’s room, and found Dick in there, all but octopus-wrapped around Damian.

Tim frowned at the escrima stick his sleeping older brother still held at the ready, though.

It was never stated out loud, or made official.

Damian lived with Dick now. Permanently.

It was one of those things that everyone knew, but no one talked about, at least, not in front of those involved.

Dick’s friends quietly texted each other about it. The Justice League murmured amongst themselves when Bruce wasn’t on the satellite. The rest of the Batfamily did what they could to just bridge the gap.

Bruce was more closed off than normal, and he talked about his eldest and youngest less and less. Even their codenames of Nightwing and Robin were like forbidden words.

There were cases with their uniforms in the cave now. And Batman’s other partners found him staring at them often.

Dick and Damian didn’t patrol anymore, and Robin and Nightwing hadn’t been seen since the War of Gotham, and the fight against Leviathan.

Most people thought they were dead. No one corrected them.

But Dick and Damian seemed to have traded their gauntlets for gardens. They walked the dog around the neighborhood every night. They meal-prepped, had movie nights, attended the local neighborhood block party.

To their neighbors, it was a single young father and his son. Just some normal folks with their not-quite-normal pets, trying to get away from the city life, and the darkness of Gotham. The father was charismatic and handsome. His son a bit aloof, but polite when approached.

They didn’t talk about their past. Didn’t talk about things like the boy’s mother, or any other family. They came from Gotham, that’s all anyone in town knew.

And they were happy, that’s all anyone in town knew, too.

Jason watched him for a few moments, slowly taking a gulp of his beer. Then, he slowly lowered his bottle and smacked his lips thoughtfully.

“You’re too giddy about this.”

Dick looked up from Damian, who was sleeping against his side. The child had fallen asleep after the three had had dinner, and continued to curl into Dick’s side in his slumber as the sun lowered behind the horizon.

“Too giddy about what?”

Jason motioned to Damian. “Being his dad.”

Dick blinked, and then fell into a huffed laugh. “I’m not his dad.”

“I bet he’d beg to differ.” Jason murmured. Paused to look at Damian himself. His chubby cheeks and long lashes. How small he was. “…If you didn’t want to give him back to Bruce in the first place, why did you?”

“I thought it was best for him. He’d always wanted to be with Bruce. It wasn’t my place to keep him from that.” Dick hummed, glancing back down to Damian himself, brushing his hair away from his eyes.

“Could have just asked him.”

“I also didn’t think I was ready to be a dad. It was a lot, that time Bruce was gone. Being Batman, raising him…” Dick shrugged. “I wasn’t doing that great of a job, despite what you all apparently think. And he deserved better.”

“And now after everything that’s happened, do you regret what you did?” Jason asked. “If you could go back, would you have kept him with you instead?”

“…I don’t know.” Dick sighed. “Maybe. If I knew Bruce was going to be this much of a prick, then yes. I would have kept him as far away from Bruce as humanly possible.”

“Well, better late than never on that last bit, right?” Jason snorted. He let the laugh die off as he took another drink of his beer. “You ever going to speak to him again?”

“I speak to him now, Jay, you know that. Just not…you know, frequently.” Dick defended. “But I know you mean in regards to Damian, and…no. I want to talk to Damian about it first, but I don’t think he’s ready.”

“Dick, it’s been months.”

“Yeah, and Bruce was trying to give him away forever.” Dick nearly spat. A sore spot still, Jason assumed. Though he wondered if it was a worse sore spot for Dick or Damian. “It’s…a lot to deal with. You were there, you saw how Damian reacted.”

“Yeah, he cried. Never seen that before.” Jason admitted. “Has he talked about Bruce at all?”

“In passing, and…coldly. Very detached.” Dick’s brows furrowed. “Doesn’t call him Father anymore. Just Bruce. Sometimes even Mr. Wayne.”

“Harsh. Does Bruce know that?” Jason asked.

“Tim knows, and I’m betting he’s mentioned it to him.” Dick explained. “But, I digress. It’s not something I want to push him on. I just…want to be here for him instead. In the interim, whenever he’s ready. Stuff like that.”

“AKA…like a dad.” Jason smirked.

“Shut it.” Dick laughed. “…What’s your thoughts on all this?”

Jason took another drink from his bottle, picked up his phone and read a quick text message. “I think Bruce was a piece of shit, deciding that was the only option for ending that stupid battle.” He placed his phone back down. “And I think you did the right thing by getting Damian out and as far away as possible.”

“Think I should have kept him?”

Jason thought a moment more. “…Yes.” A quick sniff. “And I think you should have gotten him out of the life. You getting out too was just a bonus, I think.”

Dick smiled warmly. “Thanks, Jay.” He inhaled. “I thought I’d miss it more, being Nightwing and all that, but.” He looked down at Damian, ran his hand up and down Damian’s arm. Damian just burrowed deeper into his side. “I don’t.”

“They say having kids changes you.” Jason reminded. “And this time around, you aren’t trying to juggle seven hundred different things. And you’re not grieving.”

“True.” Dick mumbled, staring down at the boy in his arms. “…I hate Bruce for what he tried to do.”

“We all do, I think.” Jason offered. “Damian’s a shitball, but…he didn’t deserve that.”

“Do you think Bruce understands that yet?” Dick asked.

“…I don’t know.” Jason admitted. “It’s hard to tell with him.”

Dick nodded, then slowly leaned his head against Damian’s, looking at Jason with a soft smile.

“Thanks for stopping by, Jay.” Dick hummed. “I really love when you do.” Then a laugh. “And Damian will never admit it, but he does too.”

“Yeah, yeah. It’s what’s family is for, and all that shit.”

Dick laughed and closed his eyes. Jason just took another drink.

“…Do you blame me?” Bruce, not Batman, asked, though his cape waved softly behind him. Cassandra and Tim glanced at each other, then to Bruce’s back, as he did not face them. Selina tilted her head. “Do you hate me?”

“Hate, no.” Selina hummed. “But blame? Well, Bat. What you almost did was terrible. Would you blame us if we did?”

“It was…” Bruce looked down at the streets below them. “I didn’t think I had another choice.”

“But in the end, you did.” Selina reminded. She looked at the younger two heroes, gave them an encouraging smile. They didn’t return it. “You found another solution that didn’t threaten your child’s life.”

“It was…” Cassandra offered. “A…poor choice.”

“And the only reason we don’t hate you is because Dick stepped in and stopped it from happening.” Tim added. “He saved Damian…and if he hadn’t gotten in your way, this conversation would be going very differently.”

Bruce closed his eyes, swayed slightly in the wind. “Would it make a difference if I said I was sorry?”

“We’re not the ones you should be apologizing to.” Selina sighed. “You know that, Bat.”

Bruce didn’t open his eyes. “…Do you think he’s happy?”

“I know he is.” Tim almost hissed. It was harsh and angry, but controlled, contained. Businesslike, and so very Tim. “He’s probably happier than he’s ever been, which is funny to say since you broke his heart and he’s still trying to put those pieces back together.”

“And better,” Cassandra cut in. “He is…safe.”

“And alive.” Selina continued.

No one spoke after that, for just a moment. Let those words – happy, safe, alive – linger between them, and float through the air into the Gotham night.

“…I miss him. I miss him and Dick both.” Bruce whispered. “Am I allowed to?”

Selina walked up behind him and put a hand on his shoulder. “You’re allowed to have emotions, Bruce.” A smirk, just for him. “In fact, we’re all pretty sure a lack of emotions is what got you here in the first place.”

Bruce tried to smile back to her. It didn’t feel right.

“…But to answer your question.” Tim exhaled, like he was exhausted. “No, we don’t hate you. We’re mad-”

“Pissed.” Cassandra interjected.

“-but would we be standing here if we hated you?”

It’d been ten months.

Ten months of Damian living with him, away from Bruce – and they hadn’t talked about it. Not once. Not even a mention, or a second.

It made him anxious, worrying about what might be clouding Damian’s brain, but it also made him happy. Because Damian seemed freer here, outside of Gotham, away from the costumes.

Away from his father.

He smiled so much out now. Laughed out loud, let himself feel.

And as much as he knew they needed to talk about it, Dick just didn’t want to wreck that.

But still – the tension of the topic was palpable. And Dick didn’t want that to get worse.

So it wasn’t his plan to talk about it right now, as they lay in the backyard, resting against Batcow, gazing at the stars above them.

But as he watched Damian pointing constellations out to his dog between them, the words just slipped out.

“I’m sorry.”

Damian looked up at him, confused. “For?”

Dick just kept staring at his charge, his voice quiet. Mournful. “For what Bruce did to you.”

Damian’s creased brows smoothed. He glanced down, reaching out to pet Titus’ head, and shrugged.

“I wish it didn’t. I wish I could have stopped him before he ever said anything.” Dick whispered. “I wish I didn’t have to take you away.”

“But I’m glad you did.” Damian interjected immediately, eyes fierce when he met Dick’s eyes once more. “Who knows where I would be right now if you hadn’t.”

Dick tried to give a little smile at that.

“…How are you feeling, though? Are you doing okay?” Dick asked. “Are you…happy?”

Damian leaned back, stared thoughtfully up at the stars.

Then smiled.

“Happier than I’ve been in a long time.” Damian decided. “A very long time.”

Dick allowed himself his own grin then, then shifted to pull Damian into his side and kiss his head.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Dick murmured into his hair. Damian merely shrugged again. “…Well, if you ever do, I’m here, okay?”

Damian looked up at him. His face was open and his smile was bright.

“I know you are.”

The manor was quiet, that was the first thing Damian noticed as he stepped in the front door.  Quiet and dusty.

He didn’t take off his shoes, didn’t plan to be here long, just looked around as he made his way towards his father’s study.

The house was so empty, he could hear the scratch of a pen from down the hall. When he reached the door, the noise was almost deafening.

He stood there, though, for just a moment. Collected himself, inhaled. Then pushed the door open.

Bruce was at his desk, proofreading some sort of document for Wayne Enterprises. There was the shadow of a beard around his face, and his hair was messy. He looked tired, but not Batman tired.

Old man tired.

He looked up at the movement of the door, and his eyes widened as he registered who it was. He learned back in his chair, braced the armrests like he was about to stand, but Damian held up his hand to wave him off.

“I’m not staying.” He said quickly. “Just…wanted to stop by.”

“…What are you doing here?” Bruce asked quietly. “In Gotham, I mean.”

“Grayson is having lunch with Gordon.” Damian hummed. “I asked to tag along, said I wanted to see a friend too.”

“…He doesn’t know you’re here.” Bruce concluded.

“No. But I will tell him later, when we’re finished.” Damian nodded. He hesitated for a moment, looked around the room, at the art and style. He didn’t feel any sense of nostalgia, though. Didn’t miss this place at all.

He sighed, and looked back at Bruce.

“…Father.” The word sounded strange, he hadn’t said it in so long. “I know we haven’t talked or seen each other since…since that day.” Damian started. He could see the pain in Bruce’s eyes immediately. The guilt. The regret. “Both through my own choices and Grayson’s interventions.”

Bruce waited, looked like he was holding his breath.

“But I just want you to know that I forgive you.” Damian said plainly. “I forgive you for what happened.”

Bruce watched for a moment, then slumped. “You don’t have to.” He whispered. “I know I don’t deserve it.”

“Debatable.” Damian shrugged. “But that doesn’t change anything, not from my perspective. I forgive you.”

Bruce looked down.

“So don’t…feel guilty. It’s okay.” Damian offered. “I...want you to be happy.”

“I’ll be happy when you come home.” Bruce admitted, not looking up. “…I miss you.”

Damian didn’t seem to expect that response. Blinked in surprise, then looked guilty himself.

“I feel that I am home.” Damian murmured. “With Grayson.”

Bruce closed his eyes.

“And I apologize for that, I know it’s not something you wanted to hear.” Damian sighed. “But…I’m happy to extend an invitation to you. To visit whenever you like.”

Bruce didn’t open his eyes. “Dick won’t like that.”

“I’ll get him to come around.” Damian paused then. “He won’t say it, but he forgives you too, or at least is in the process of it. He was only upset because your decision was not what he felt was best for me, and that’s all he wants.”

Bruce did look up at that.

“He just wants what’s best for me. And I’ve found that the life we’ve adopted since we left is that.”

“That’s…good.” Bruce forced himself to admit. “I’m glad. For you and Dick both.”

“Thank you.” Another hesitation. “And thank you for everything you’ve given me thus far. I appreciate it more than I can ever say, even with our last meeting what it was.”

Bruce flashed a grim smile. Thank you for introducing me to Dick, is what Damian wouldn’t say.

“…But I better get going. Like I said, I can’t stay. And I actually do have a friend I’d like to visit.” Damian ended. “…It’s good to see you…Father.”

“You as well, Damian.” Bruce stood. “Thank Dick for me. For protecting you when I should have.”

“I will.” Damian promised. Stopped again, like he didn’t know what to do next, then merely gave a quick wave. “Goodbye, Father.”

“Goodbye, Damian.”

Damian nodded, and disappeared back into the hall. Bruce didn’t follow.

Just sat back down, and hid his face in his hands as he heard the front door close.

Maria Hill A-Z

Honestly can she just wife me already?

× A = affection (how affectionate are they in day to day life? Do they show affection publicly or keep that more in private?)

Maria at first doesn’t show any PDA, she’s more of an ‘all about the job’ kinda gal, y’know? She’s comfortable with affection around the Avengers and Fury but anyone else is a no go. She does it solely to keep you both as safe as she can.

× B = best memory (what is the best memory they have with you)

Ofttt, it’s hard to pick just one. There’s your first date, your first ‘i love you’, your first mission together or there’s the first morning she woke up beside you, your birthday, your first anniversary.

But her favourite, her absolute favourite memory would have to be the day you both moved in together. Boxes surrounded you both, laughter could be heard throughout the apartment, Maria had finally got you to agree that moving in together would be beneficial for you both. 

The day itself couldn’t have gone any better, the moving went well, Tony and the other Avengers helped, Steve, Tony, and Bucky doing most of the heavy lifting whilst Bruce and Sam navigated where everything was going. Nat and Wanda didn’t do much but laugh at them but the two of them did hang back to help Maria unpack the kitchen stuff. Peter and Clint helped you carry the last of the boxes from the truck. Scott came by with pizza for everyone, after that they left with the promise of coming back once you’re both settled in. There were still a few boxes left, they could wait. Both of you sank on to your couch, wrapping her arm around you and pulling you closer.

Keep working with Nick and the Avengers for as long as needed but really she just wants to have a semi-normal life with you.

If she isn’t working or at one of Tony’s parties then, she’s spending all her time with you. Doing absolutely anything you want, from cooking together to just getting in the car and seeing where it takes you.  

× F = first date (what was it like?)

Maria counts it as the first date and you really don’t have the guts to argue with her. It was your first time at one of Tony’s parties, you came with Natasha, she’d been trying to get you to work up the nerve to at least talk to Maria.

Maria, however, was having the same issue with Steve and Tony. They’ve been trying to get Maria in the same room as you. Eventually, as the night passed you both found yourself’s at the bar. Stealing glances at each other until you finally snapped, swigging your drink. Making your way over to her, “If I try a cheesy pick-up line do you promise not to fire me?”

She was quick to shoot back, “I can’t promise that.” From that moment onward you tried your best pick up line on her, it made her laugh. The minute you heard it, you knew then and there that you needed to hear it daily. After a few drinks together, Tony had seen to it that everyone paired up and started to dance, Maria, extended her hand, dragging you with her. She walked you back to your apartment that night and asked you on a second date.

Poor pick-up lines, your back and forth banter with Tony and Thor and honestly how quickly you got Fury to like you.

She gives hands down, the best hugs on the planet. She’s always the big spoon and will, without a doubt always pull you into any hug she can manage. Even at work.

Honestly, I see Hill being a guitarist or at least was before her time with SHIELD

Maria is nothing but a passionate person, she’s just got a lot of love to give and will happily give it all to you. She’s got absolutely no problem, pulling you into a kiss the minute you walk through the door or into the same room. 

Her hands will make their way over any part of you she can reach, from sliding them into your pockets or slipping them into your belt loops- just to pull you closer. One sits on your neck as the other finds itself in your hair or both find comfort on your face as she pulls you both as close as she can.

Blushing, she’s a blusher y’all. She’s also a stubborn woman. She won’t tell you how she feels because that’s just how she is, she needs a lot of encouragement or to be physically forced into a situation where she needs to tell you exactly how she feels.

Absolutely anything to do with Fury. She doesn’t talk much about her life before SHIELD, but since you both got together everything positive she mentions involves him, any milestone she’s hit herself, Fury’s always been right there by her side.

Discussing work at dinner. She doesn’t mind bringing work home with her- if anything she does it the most but the golden rule is it stays out of the kitchen.

She didn’t really have much of a plan for herself until she fell into her SHIELD life since then she’s just wanted to climb the ranks.

She’s crazy involves, she’s everything you could ever hope for from talking to your bump, painting the nursery, going to all the doctor’s appointments, to getting involved with their homework, going to every school event, full on sobbing at every milestone they hit, sobbing even more once she gets her arms around them. Maria’s all about her family, there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her kids and they know it.

She always says nothing can surprise her anymore since she’s fairly open to every possibility of anything non-human existing.

Maria does it all. Flowers, surprise dates, chocolates, she’s not exactly big on Valentine's days since she showers you in all of her love daily but will always have something planned, normally something small that means something to the two of you.

You, because she’s cheesy like that.

You’re always subconsciously touching, it’s become second nature to the both of you. Holding hands, entwining your fingers together as your both going through the work on your tablets, swinging your legs onto the other's lap, resting your heads on each other's shoulder.

If you’ve had a hard mission, she doesn't like to suffocate you in affection but needs to be in the same room as you, just you know she’s there. You need a sense of normality when you come back, it helps you deal with whatever happened, but if you need it then she’s more than happy to wrap her arms around her.

If she’s been on a rough mission then the only place she wants and needs to be is with you. You’re there the minute she steps off the Quinjet, all through her medical, the debrief and then you’ll drive back home, never letting go of her. The second you get home, she’s dragging you to the couch. She just needs to let everything out.

You- you’re forever falling over her stuff, files, clothes, shoes. Anything and everything is left laying around.

Maria- she can’t stand you making random noises especially if she’s doing paperwork

There are albums of photos, polaroids, framed photos littered around your apartment and there’s plenty of videos and copies of your photos saved to a secure hard drive, you’re spies after all.

× W = wedding (what was the wedding like?)

Simple, intimate, all the Avengers (new and old) and the entirety of SHIELD attended and Fury officiated the entire thing. Maria looked breathtaking as usual and you scrubbed up well thanks to Tony. 

× X = eXtra (what’s an interestingness fact about them that they don’t tell anyone about?)

She needs to sleep on the window side of the bed as well as being a fan of Frank Sinatra.

× Y = yuck (what do they hate? Could be a food, sent, word anything)

She hates the word moist only because Tony’s said it so much to annoy Steve and Bucky.

× Z = zzzz (how heavy of a sleeper are they? How do they sleep? What mood do they wake up in? Really any sleeping headcanons)

She’s not a light sleeper but is fairly alert if there’s a lot of movement on the bed.

She loves tucking her head under your chin and falling asleep on your chest as you play with her hair. Listening to your heartbeat really helps her calm down. She knows you can handle yourself in any situation and that you’ll do anything to protect her so she can let herself be her around you.

natasha’s wings are… white.

a shock to her, to anyone who knows her. how is the black widow one with wings as white as snow, no soot or stain daring to change the color. but they’re perfect, as pure as the sacrificial lambs of old.

she uses them, when she can. letting them fan out to attract her mark. the light can filter through them, she looks like an angel (and no one’s original when they say it to her, asking when she fell from heaven, and she grins and plays along until they see how well she bites).

steve punches a wall after that doctor’s appointment. ends up walking straight to his mother with tears streaming down his face, bucky offering the sheepish smile this time around as they thrust forward a broken wrist and three broken fingers for examination.

his wings are so sparse, they look like someone plucked a chicken clean. pulled the feathers clean off, leaving nothing but the bones. no meat to be seen. pathetic. useless. the army won’t clear him based on the sight of him alone. maybe next time, kid. eat some more food, kid. go pick up some scrap, kid.

“you will never fly. but if i can help it, of course, give you a chance to fly… what would you do with it?”

the serum gives him wings. beautiful ones, too. they’re strong, deep, brown. look like they were made for a man ten feet taller than the little kid who punched walls and used trash cans as shields. he can fly now. it takes a while to learn, but he can do it. he does it well.

they’re nothing graceful. by the time’s he’s two they look like they can engulf him. his father yells at him for it. screams that that he’s a freak. his mother cowers.

years later she’s gone, and bruce sees blood on his hands. his father’s blood is on the pavement.

if anything, they grow as he does. they fill rooms, the closets he hides in. so he keeps them wrapped up tight. keeps them pulled close around him, at night, when the shakes start. he never flies. never dares to lift his eyes above the ground he’s walking on. but he makes it. somehow. he can think for himself after all and does a hell of a job doing it.

liz laughs at his wings. like she gets the joke, the professor in his glasses with the wings meant for a professional athlete. her father laughs along. but for the first time, bruce laughs with them. because if it makes her smile, well. he’s willing to trip over a few feathers.

his wings fit around her. the room is full of them, and her laughter and the smell of the breakfast they’re cooking. she preens, straightens them out when they bend. the molt happens, and she helps pick up the pieces.

until she’s gone. and it’s all because of him.

the room is full of his feathers, the piles he leaves behind like further proof that she’s not coming back. harder to pick up with one set of hands, so he doesn’t. harder to fix the ones out of place when he can’t reach, so he refuses to. they fold against his back, and they never fill a room, because the only thing that deserves that honor is the way elizabeth ross smiled.

how does a man with huge wings hide?

“the asgardians are a proud race,” odin tells them, and the authority makes their knees shake. even thor’s, as he stares at his father, at what he’s meant to be one day. “these wings, a gift from the gods. our strength, above all others in the universe. but we must be as strong with them as we are without.”

he can see it, even as a child. the coronation. beautiful women on his arms. loki by his side. he will be a good man. a great king. better than odin could ever be.

it is easy to practice. to pretend he holds the scepter, the crown on his head. to place bandages on his eye, tied behind his head, and boom his boys in an empty throne room. it is easy to see the future when that’s all you have ahead of you.

but soon he sees nothing else. sees nothing but the women that woo him and his friends that encourage him and his brother who envies him. he sees nothing else. mjolnir comes to him, and he feels it in every bone. he strikes down every enemy. what else does he need to tell him that he will be what he was always meant to be?

when they fight, he feels no wounds. he feels the wind in his hair, the chill of ice in his toes. watches giants fall, and challenges laufey where he sits above them.

a good king. he will be a good king.

“i was protecting our people!” he screams at his father, and he is a child again. his knees are shaking.

“you were protecting your pride!”

the world stops. the Bifrost splits open, and thor sees the rainbow, the crackling crystals. cold as jotunheim.

“i strip you of your power,” his father returns, and he sees not his father – he sees the odin of old. sees his fury, sees the pale horse he rides on. “i strip you of your wings. you do not deserve our ancestor’s gifts. you are a disgrace.”

his wings are gone.

he is falling.

so much for a good king.

the day after his father dies, clint barton turns in some homework, smokes behind the bleachers, and gives one last smile to the kid in his french class before he disappears.

the bartons were a dirty name anyway – it wasn’t like them leaving didn’t do more good than trying to stay in the house on the corner. the damn thing is torn down once they’re gone, and the property value of the whole neighborhood goes up a few thousand bucks.

no one brings them up again. because if they think about it too long, then they become part of the problem. the murder-suicide of a couple on the corner, the bruises on the boys’ necks. the father that drank, the mother that smoked.

so they let the boys leave, in their father’s ratty coup that barely fit the younger one. he was growing so fast he was gangly, and his wings could barely keep up. the older has his jaw so tight it’s gonna snap, and it does when the younger drops a box and starts crying like he killed his mom himself.

(he thinks he did. he couldn’t hear her, he couldn’t hear her, and no matter how many times he says that his brother shuts him up soon enough.)

and then they’re gone. they leave the box on the sidewalk.

later, the whole neighborhood sees the sign. the circus is in town, and everyone gathers to take a peek. there’s not much else to do in the place anyway, besides cheer for some high school football.

they scream loudly for each performer. someone walks on his hands. the lions dazzle. and an archer does a stunt with his brother that has the whole crowd whooping. when he flies, they all stare. goes up to his perch until the end of the show. he’s a favorite with the kids, but leaves the adults puzzled.

they can’t connect the dots. the long limbs, the striped wings, the look in his eyes like shattered glass inside a cardboard box.

“how could they,” barney snorts into his beer, “if they never bothered looking in the first place?”

they’re delicate. so fragile they snap when he comes crying into the world. tony cries so loud that the doctors almost don’t seem them, the bright red plumage, the color that never dulls. and when they heal, he never puts them away, especially since that’s all his father wants him to do.

“put those damn things away,” howard says, and the anger that simmers in his tone ripples the whiskey in his glass. “you’re not a girl. you don’t fucking flaunt.”

his mother is quiet, staring at her plate. tony isn’t even sure what her wings look like. what his mother looks like when she lifts off the ground. she is stiff. unmoving. the stillest of life, if that’s even what hides behind her eyes.

tony refuses to be silenced by howard, and his forced vibrancy almost burns him out.

he drinks, he dances, he flies in the night sky. the amount of times he almost get shot, the frustration from rhodey and the eye rolls from pep. they hit a steel wall and fall to the ground. he is invincible. he’s a god among men.

howard can’t scream at him anymore. can’t tell him to put his wings away. the quiver of maria’s lip can’t haunt him. he is his own man, he tells the women, tells the men, tells rhodey, tells pepper. they kiss him to shut him up, they huff, they laugh.

he’s his own man.

the whiskey doesn’t answer.

the humvee blows. his wings are out, basically pressed against the sides of the car as he takes the picture with the soldiers. the feathers singe. red becomes black and becomes red again.

put those damn things away.

oh, he could laugh if he didn’t cry first.

Queen of the Crows is a reference to Clea who takes over the Antivan Crows with Zevran and they do some reforming of the guild. She's one of the leaders so she's the queen of the Antivan Crows, hence queen of the Crows. Is that anything like me? Well I mean she's my OC and I'm alot like her so I would hope to be that badass if I was in Thedas.

When it Becomes too Much - Batfamily x Reader

Requested by robinlover11620 - A batsis imagine where she deals with depression and self-harm. 

You could feel their stares as you tried to find the energy to punch the punching bag. They watched you from across the cave, judging you. In that moment, you hated them for it. Landing a hard punch on the bag, you found agitation eating away at your soul. The punch seemed to drain you.

After a long moment, you heard footsteps behind you followed by a warm hand coming to rest on your shoulder. “(Y/N), are you okay?” Dick asked softly, coming around to face you. 

You suppressed the urge to scream or burst into tears as you laid a punch onto the bag. “I’m fine,” you growled, blinking back the tears that wanted to fall down your cheeks. You hated yourself so much at that moment. 

Dick’s hand started to rub your back. “Why don’t you take a break?” Dick suggested, trying to guide you towards the Batcave stairs. “Alfred has some of your favorite cookies waiting.” 

You glared at him, emotion bursting from you. “I said I was fine,” you screamed, elbowing him in the stomach and flipping him over your shoulder. Dick slammed into the ground, groaning from the impact. 

“What the hell, (Y/N)?” Tim shouted, running to Dick’s side. He helped Dick sit up before glaring at you. 

“I’m fine, Tim,” Dick reassured, rubbing his head where it smacked against the floor. The guilt from your actions ate you alive. Tears started to well up in your eyes. Tim’s face soften at the sight.

Before either man could speak again, you ran towards the stairs of the Batcave, desperately wanting to escape. Bruce and Jason were in the study when you stepped out of the clock entrance. Jason was arguing with Bruce, preventing them from noticing the tears on your face. You felt Bruce’s eyes on you as you slipped out of the study.

You ran down the hallway, bumping passed Damian and Duke to enter the kitchen. Alfred was cooking something, calling out to you, but you ignored him and sprinted out of the back door. Tears clouded your vision as you ran through the garden and into the woods surrounding the manor.  

Eventually once you were deep into the woods, you came to a stop. Leaning onto your knees, you caught your breath before sinking to the ground. A sob escaped your lips, burying your face in your hands. Your emotions were racing a hundred miles a minute. 

Everything was falling apart. You didn’t want to eat and all you wanted was to sleep. Alfred wouldn’t let you sleep, making you enraged beyond your control. You were restless and exhausted at the same time. More tears slipped out your face.

Reaching into your pocket, you pulled out a small pocket knife. Slowly, you rolled up your sleeve, revealing the scars you had made on your wrist. You traced the scars before flipping out the blade. Just when you were about to lower the blade to your wrist to reopen one of the scar, a gasp stopped you.

Your eyes shot up in surprise to find Duke standing only a few feet away from you. Duke took in the sight of the knife and the scars on your wrists before springing into action. He tried to disarm you, but you moved away from him.

“(Y/N), put the knife down,” he ordered, holding his hands up in surrender. His eyes were on the knife as if willing for it to disappear from your grasp. 

More tears fell down your cheeks. You shook your head, sobbing. “You weren’t supposed to see. No one was supposed to see.” 

While you were distracted, Duke shifted closer to you. You flinched at his movement, accidentally cutting your arm deeper than you meant. Hissing from the pain, you looked down as the blood started dripping down your arm.  

Suddenly, the knife was gone from your hand. You were too distracted by the blood rising from the rather deep cut on your arm that you didn’t see Duke taking the knife from your hand. He folded the knife before hiding it into his pocket. Slipping off his over-shirt, Duke pressed it to the cut.

“Come on,” he ordered, pulling you to your feet. He kept the shirt pressed to your wound while dragging you back towards the manor. You followed best you could, lightheaded by the blood loss. 

“Please don’t tell anyone,” you begged as you walked. “I won’t do it again. Just please don’t tell anyone.” 

Duke stopped, turning to look you in the eye. You could see his hesitation, but there was resolve in his eyes. “I’m sorry, (Y/N), but things like this can’t be kept a secret.” With that, he pushed on. Stumbling behind him, you knew your family was never going to look at you the same way again.

Later, you were laying on a couch in Bruce’s study with your head in Dick’s lap. He was stroking your hair as Alfred cleaned up the cut on your arm. Duke had told them everything, and your secret was out. 

Bruce was on the phone, making an appointment for you to see a doctor. Tim was sitting by your feet on the couch, typing rapidly on his laptop. Every once and while, he would stop to give you a long look before going back to work. Damian and Jason left a long time ago, unable to handle the news. Duke sat in the corner of the room, watching you with a solemn expression. 

“I’m so sorry, (Y/N),” Dick whispered, wiping a rouge tear that fell down your cheek. “We should have known.” You didn’t say a word, saying blankly at the ceiling.

Alfred finished bandaging your cut, getting to his feet. He rubbed his eyes, gathering the medical supplies. “I’ll go make some tea,” he mumbled before leaving the room. More tears slipped down your face when you heard the door shut behind him. You could feel them rejecting you already for what you had done to yourself. 

Tim laid a hand on your foot at the sound of your tears, trying to comfort you. Dick pulled you up in his arms, hugging you to his chest. 

You didn’t know how long you sobbed into Dick’s chest. All you knew was you felt dead inside. 

When your tears dried, you were handed over to Bruce. Bruce leaned down to whisper into your ear.

“I love you so much, (Y/N).” He kissed your forehead as he carried you up to your room. “I’m so sorry you were in so much pain, and I didn’t notice.” Entering your room, Bruce laid you down on your bed before sitting on the edge of it. 

“Please don’t hate me,” you coughed, your eyes burning from crying so much.

Bruce was taken back. “(Y/N), why would you think of such a thing? Sweetheart, I may have hated that you got to the point of hurting yourself, but I don’t blame you. I don’t hate you, (Y/N).” He reached out to take your hand.

“I’m sorry,” you whispered, exhausted. “I always cause you trouble.” 

He turned over your hand, studying the scars on your wrist. Bruce closed his eyes, gathering his next words. “You are not a burden to me, (Y/N). If you are suffering, I’m going to help you because I’m your father. You don’t have to be sorry, Sweetheart.” He smiled when he saw how you were trying to stay awake. “Go asleep, Honey. I’ll be here when you wake.”

Peace filled you at his words as your eyes drifted closed. You knew you were far from better, but somehow the future seemed just a little bit brighter than before.

"I can't believe he just gave us this apartment!" Octavia had assumed the two bedroom apartment would be like any normal apartment; small. Not even close. They could probably fit a family of twelve from looking at the size of this place. It had a large living room, dinning room, kitchen, two bathrooms; one included a laundry room, as well as the bedrooms. It was also conveniently furnished. "Are you sure there are only two bedrooms?”

"So it appears, though, the closets themselves are larger than my entire room." Loki scoffed, walking back out of the bathroom. "I feel ripped off."

"Who knew all you needed was a wife and kid to enjoy the finer things in life?" Octavia teased, giving him a quick kiss.

"Damn. If only I had seduced you sooner." he smirked. "Shall we try out the new bed?"

Octavia giggled."I should have known you'd suggest that. Which room?"

"The one with the bed." He grinned.

"Very funny."

"No, seriously, the other bedroom is empty."

"Oh." Octavia walked through the hallway until she found the empty room. "He must have left this one alone so we could decorate for the baby." she smiled. "That was sweet."

Loki grumbled. "Yeah, sweet."

Octavia glared at him. "Are you jealous? Don't think I missed all the possessiveness back there."

"I am not jealous." Loki protested. "I don't get jealous."

"Sure." Octavia eye rolled. "I could totally tell by the way the smoke was coming out of your ears." she giggled. "It's okay, I like possessive you."

"Oh, do you now?" Loki purred, picking her up off her feet.

"Put me down!" she shrieked. "I can walk!"

"I never got to do this, and since we have already walked inside-" he frowned. "-carrying you to the bedroom will just have to do."

She found it hard to complain when it put it like that. "Planning to seduce me, are you?"

"Always."

The bed was a lot larger than the bed Loki already had and they both found it way too comfortable. "Oh, my god. I'm in heaven. I feel like I'm laying on air."

"Agreed. I don't even know if I can have sex now. I'm way too comfortable, this should be a sin."

"I know." She snapped her heads towards Loki. "We could have cloud sex."

Loki chuckled. "Cloud sex?"

"That's what this feels like!"

"You are silly."

"Shut up."

Loki rolled over and pulled her against him. "How have you been feeling? Seriously."

"About what? Jane or the baby."

"If you are going to control what I eat, I at least get ranch with my salad that I would have never eaten on a good day. BUT-you are a good cook, so it works." she took a bit. "Mmm. Correction, amazing cook. One day I may even cook for you if you'd let me."

"Number one-it's a salad, hard to screw up and two-you cooked for me for months, I can return the favor. Plus, you need to stay off your feet."

300 Years of San Antonio

The history of San Antonio is fascinating and complex. Here, we highlight some of the people and developments that have shaped the Alamo City into what it is today

1718: The Founding of San Antonio

The city’s official operation begins in May of 1718 with the nearly simultaneous founding of military and mission establishments, according to Bruce Shakelford, one of the primary curators behind the Witte’s tricentennial Confluence and Culture exhibition. On May 1, 1718, the Spanish priest Father Antonio Olivares founds Mission San Antonio de Valero, named after St. Anthony of Padua. A few days later on May 5, San Antonio de Béxar Presidio, a military garrison, is established on the west side of the river. Within a few decades, four additional missions are planted near tribes along the river with the intent of converting indigenous people to Catholicism and Spanish ways of life, says Shakelford. Mission San José is founded in 1720 and Mission Concepción, Mission San Juan Capistrano and Mission San Francisco de la Espada are all established in San Antonio in 1731 after being relocated from other areas. Open plazas, jacal (sturdy houses made of logs, mud and straw) villages, workshops and acequias for irrigation surround the missions’ iconic central churches and allow for life filled with hard work making clothes and other goods, attending to new types of crops in the fields and herding cattle on ranches.

1730s: Spanish Governor’s Palace Established

The first section of the palace, also known as the Comandancia, is constructed in the 1730s by José de Urrutia, captain of the San Antonio de Bexar Presidio. The palace serves as a military outpost, a general store and a private home to another family over the next 100 years and in the 1850s—when City Hall is built nearby—houses a clothing store and other businesses. In 1929, the city purchases the building and it becomes one of San Antonio’s first preservation projects.

1731

Canary Islanders sent by the king of Spain to populate what is then the province of Texas travel to San Antonio de Bexar.

1773

San Antonio de Bexar is named the capital of Spanish Texas.

1793

The Spanish government secularizes San Antonio de Valero, transitioning the mission into a military post.

1813

The city declares for Mexican independence, but is recaptured following the battles of Medina and Alazan Creek.

Trailblazer: Samuel Maverick

A Texan not by birth but one who got here (nearly) as quick as he could, Samuel Maverick was among the two delegates selected to serve in the 1836 Independence Convention. He’d moved to San Antonio just before the Siege of Bexar but left the state again in 1836 to live in Alabama, returning to San Antonio a few years later after the birth of his son (another important San Antonian, Samuel Jr.). Maverick served as mayor and is known now largely because of the term “maverick,” which denotes unbranded calves and later led to the term being used for independent thinkers. It came about after Maverick let his own cattle roam in the 1840s, something uncommon at the time. He also served in the Texas Legislature, where he was known for working to win equal land rights for Mexican and German immigrants.

1835-1836: Battle of Goliad, Siege of Béxar and Battle of the Alamo

The Battle of Goliad, the second battle in the Texas Revolution, results in an early Texas victory when the Texan forces attack the Mexican Army at Presidio La Bahía near Goliad on the morning of Oct. 10, 1835. Samuel McCulloch Jr., a free black soldier, is the only Texan wounded in battle, becoming the first Texan casualty of the revolution. The first major campaign for Texas freedom is ignited during the Siege of Béxar (Oct. 27 – Dec. 9, 1835), which ends in a Texas victory over the Mexican troops. A few months later, the Mexican Army launches a return attack on San Antonio de Valero resulting in the deadly 13-day Battle of the Alamo (Feb. 23 – March 6, 1836). Every defender is killed, and “Remember the Alamo” becomes the rally of the Texan army as they continue to fight—and eventually gain—independence.

1837: San Antonio Named County Seat

In December 1836, Mexican forces leave the soon-to-be-formed Republic of Texas, which organizes Bexar County and, in January 1837, delegates San Antonio as the county seat.

1852: Higher Education Comes to Town

St. Mary’s University (first called St. Mary’s Institute) brings Catholic education, rooted in the Marianist ideals, to San Antonio. But that is just the start of higher education in the Alamo City:

Founded in 1869, Trinity University moves to San Antonio in 1942.

The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word found Incarnate Word College in 1881 for women. Men are first admitted in 1970 and it becomes the University of the Incarnate Word in 1996.

The Sisters of the Congregation of Divine Providence open Our Lady of the Lake College in 1895. It becomes Our Lady of the Lake University in 1975.

University of Texas at San Antonio is founded by the Texas Legislature in 1969. The first class (which includes just 1,113 students) begins taking courses in 1973.

The Legislature establishes Texas A&M–San Antonio as its own campus in 2009, fulfilling a vision that began over 10 years earlier.

Southwest School of Art is formed in 1965 at La Villita before moving to its current home in the former Ursuline Convent and Academy in 1971. In 2014, it establishes a bachelor’s of fine arts degree program. The first class will graduate this year.

1855: Brewing Begins in San Antonio

San Antonio’s brewing history begins in 1855 when William Menger and Charles Degen open the Western Brewery, located next to the Alamo. In 1887, the San Antonio Brewing Association (aka Pearl Brewery) begins brewing and—along with the original Lone Star Brewery—ushers in the city’s golden age of beer.

The growth, however, is halted just over three decades later by Prohibition. Only Pearl survives, and it goes on to become the largest brewery in the Southwest. Between 1933 and 1994 San Antonio has just two breweries: Pearl and the second iteration of Lone Star.

In 2001, after 115 years in business, Pearl Brewery closes (Lone Star already had halted production).

The growth of craft beer, though, means Pearl isn’t the end of local beer. Entrepreneurs behind Blue Star, Freetail, Alamo Beer and others have once again made the city a hub for brewing.

1858: St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Opens

Though missionaries form the group behind the church in 1850, it isn’t until eight years later that the downtown landmark (designed by Richard Upjohn) opens, according to a book by Lewis F. Fisher. It becomes a community leader in San Antonio and among Episcopalian churches. It’s also the site of future president Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1934 wedding.

1860s​: Chili Queens Introduce New Flavors

1947: Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children Opens

In 1945, Dela and John White learn that their infant daughter, Tuleta, is deaf. The Whites discover the John Tracy Clinic, one of only a few schools equipped to educate deaf children—but it is in California. Nevertheless, Dela has a strong belief that her daughter can learn to speak, so the Whites travel to the Tracy Clinic with their 18-month-old. With encouragement from its founder and initial funding from the Junior League of San Antonio, 26-year-old Dela White decides to open a school of her own. Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children enrolls seven students in 1947 in a former caretaker’s cottage near the site of today’s Landa Library, painted with bright yellow paint that had been donated. Over the next 70-plus years, Sunshine Cottage grows, moving from to what’s now the Zoo School and eventually to a 20-acre campus on Hildebrand that opens in 2010. There, the student body, which now includes 300 from infancy through fifth grade, benefit from state of-the-art spoken-word education.
