TMO Alternative Epilogue

Summary: You and Harrison create a life together.

A/N: thank you all for the love on this series, can’t wait to hear your reactions!! this series meant a lot to me and I put a lot of work into it psychologically and all, im geniunely super proud of the story as a whole even though it ended up ending very different than how I originally intended! <3

The Birth

“There you go darling! Squeeze my hand as hard as you need to,” Harrison murmurs, pushing hair out of your eyes.

“Haz, I-, ow! This baby wants to kill me,” you cry, afraid you might break his hand as you squeeze it.

Your doctor, the one you met with the moment you arrived in Boston 5 months ago, Dr. Glenn, is encouraging you, telling you she sees the head.

You can hear the baby’s cries and the sound brings tears to your eyes, happy tears.

“Almost there, excellent work Adeline,” Dr. Glenn praises you, and all of a sudden a huge weight lifts off your shoulders as you give birth.

Harrison kisses your cheek as you let go of his hand, “Can I see him?” you ask, wiping the tears from your eyes as you watch Dr. Glenn clean your baby off and wrap him in a blue blanket.

“Happy, healthy, this little guy looks great,” Dr. Glenn helps position your child in your arms and you swallow down a sob, because he has Tom’s nose. And Tom is-

“Have you decided on a name yet?” one of the nurses asks as your baby coos and cries in your arms.

“I uh, I was thinking Phillip, Phil for short, like your mom,” you looked anxiously up at Harrison, hoping he liked the idea.

His face lit up brighter than Christmas tree and you felt your heart fill with warmth as he nods.

“Hey there Phillip, you’ve got the best mommy in the entire world,” Harrison smiles, reaching his hand out to rest on your shoulder.

8 Months Old

“No! I, I don’t deserve to be his mother!” you shout, sitting down on the couch as Harrison paces the room.

“When are you going to- Y/N, I thought we got through this! I thought you- when you left to go back with Tom-,”

“Don’t say his name.”

“When you left with him all that time ago, you were better! You were happy! I thought you were ready to be a mom! With me,” Harrison stops, turning toward you. Pleading with wide blue eyes, begging you to see you the way he sees you.

“I-,”

“I mean, what could have happened in four days that changed that? Is this because you-,”

“I killed him! Harrison, I killed the father of my child and now-,”

“Harrison! Y/N! Come quick!” Ian shouts from the kitchen and both of your eyes nearly bug out of your skulls, terrified something happened to Phillip.

By the time you and Harrison make it to the kitchen, Ian is sitting up against the fridge, clapping excitedly with a huge smile on his face.

“Where’s Phillip? Is something wrong?” You ask, looking around for your son when you hear him babbling from behind the center island.

You watch him, gasping as he struggles to stand on two feet, clapping his chubby hands together.

“Mama!” He cries out, your mouth falling open in awe.

“Phillip, oh my goodness, look at you!” You praise, kneeling down on the floor next to Ian, opening your arms to encourage him to keep moving.

“His first steps, look at him, practically running already,” Harrison chuckles, sitting next to you, the fight from earlier practically forgotten about.

“Come to mama,” you encourage, smiling widely as Phillip’s feet start to move faster, wanting to be wrapped in your arms.

“Da-da!” Phillip shouts instead, falling right onto Harrison’s lap.

His hand curls around Harrison’s thumb, snuggling against his chest as you brush a dark brown curl behind Phillip’s ear.

“Always knew he’d be a daddy’s boy,” you chuckle, “he did say your name first.”

“No! He was laughing, his speech slurred a little, that’s why it sounded like Haz, but his first word was loud and clear, mama, he loves his mama,” Harrison says, kissing your cheek.

As if to echo his words, Phillip wordlessly crawled from Harrison’s lap to yours, snuggling against your stomach as you hold him close. You could get used to this, you definitely could get used to this.

3 Years Old

“We need our own place,” Harrison reasons, “it isn’t safe to raise Phillip here. Bless Ian and the rest of the guys for helping us out these past few years, but I want to keep him away from the mob, from danger.”

“This place is like a built in babysitter though, there’s always someone here to help look after him when we want to go on a date night or we’re both working…”

“Well, that’s what babysitters are for, and besides, you’re almost never away from him for more than a few hours at a time. I found a beautiful townhouse for rent in the North End. Three bedrooms, two floors, even has a small backyard. Don’t you think Phillip would love to run around and play in a backyard someday?”

You nod, resting your head on Harrison’s chest as you think it through. Logically, there was no reason that you shouldn’t move into your own space. Sometimes the men got too excited during meetings, shouting and cheering when Phillip was trying to sleep. Plus, sharing a room with Harrison and your ever growing son is getting exhausting.

“Three bedrooms,” you muse, smiling at the idea of Phillip having a younger sibling to run around with.

“Yeah, you know, our room, Phillip’s room…” Harrison’s sentence tapers off so you can fill in the blank.

“Maybe a little brother or sister for him?” You smile, gently kissing Harrison’s jaw.

“Really?” Harrison sounds like a kid in a candy shop as you trail your lips along his jaw and down his neck.

“Really, I was an only child, it sucked, so Phillip deserves more than that,” You close your eyes and imagine having another kid, a kid of Harrison’s, a kid of yours.

“I would love for Phillip to have a little brother or sister,” Harrison sighs as you straddle his hips, “maybe both.”

“Oh no, we do not want a 19 kids and counting situation, mister,” you giggle as his hands curl around your sides.

“Who said 19? I just want three, darling, three cute little kids to run around and play with.”

“You’re a great dad, you know that, right?” You smile, tracing your finger along the curve of his nose.

“And you, Y/N, are the best mom Phillip could ever ask for.”

As if on cue, just to interrupt your moment, Phillip wakes up, “mama? Daddy?”

“Maybe we can make those babies when we have a room of our own,” you laugh, getting up out of your bed.

“Great plan,” Harrison sighs, watching you pick Phillip up to bring him to cuddle. He couldn’t imagine his life happening any differently. And neither could you.

4 Years Old

You just got Phillip to sleep in his new bedroom and you’re exhausted after moving into the new townhouse all day.

You all but collapse on your new bed next to Harrison, “finally got our little boy down,” you curl up with your head on Harrison’s chest.

“Are you talking about Phillip or me?” Harrison chuckles, his eyelids drooping.

“Hmmm both, but I have to ask you something, need to ask something of you.”

“Anything,” Harrison says, suddenly wide awake as you tap your fingers against his chest.

“If they finally catch up to me, if the FBI come snooping around asking you questions…”

Harrison’s breathing stops for a moment as his arm tightens around your side, “they haven’t in almost five years…”

“If they do,” you continue, “if they do, I need you to promise to kill me, to take me out, I-,”

Harrison sits up immediately, pulling you up with him, “no, absolutely not. Your case is cold, there’s been no activity on it according to my sources on the inside, we’re fine, you’re fine,” he sounds like he’s trying to convince himself more than you.

“Harrison,” you turn, cupping his cheeks, “it’s a precaution, me asking you this. But I have some leftover needles from back in the day, they’re locked away in the safe. If, and it’s a huge if, if something happens to me and they’re seconds away from catching me, then you use that needle on me. Simple jab to my neck.”

“Why would I- you know I could never kill you-,”

“Don’t think of it as killing me, okay?”

“How would it not be-,”

You press your forehead to his, forcing his eyes to meet yours, “it would be saving our child from the horror of finding out his mother is a-, was a serial killer, he can’t know that I- that I used to kill people. So you would have to kill me.”

“I can’t-,”

“Harrison,” your voice is final and you don’t give him a chance to speak, “babe, I- I wouldn’t ask this of you if I wasn’t thinking of Phillip, of our kid, of his future. It may never come up, you might be right, maybe the FBI has forgotten about the Scooby gang,” you shake your head, “but if they haven’t, please don’t hesitate to make sure Phillip has the best life possible, please take care of our baby.”

Tears well in his eyes as he kisses you slowly, “for Phillip,” he says through gritted teeth.

You nod, kissing him again, “for Phillip.”

5 Years Old

“Hey, Phillip, wave for daddy!” You laugh, holding onto Phillip’s arms in the wading pool.

Harrison was kneeling at the edge, video taping you and Phillip, his introduction to the public wade pool in Boston Common. It’s a hot day, probably in the mid 80’s and humid as hell. Your baby bump is peeking through your T-shirt, due in October.

Phillip waves, “hi dad!”

You wave as well before Phillip jumps in your arms, resting his head on your stomach.

“I think I can hear her, she’s my little sister, right? Can we name her Matilda?” Phillip giggles. He’s recently been on a Matilda binge, watching the movie over and over again when you and Harrison allow it.

“Matilda?” You giggle, feeling her kick once again, Phillip backing away with wide eyes.

“Was that her?” He squeals, reaching up on his tiptoes to press his hand against your stomach.

“That was, that’s your little sister,” you grin, resting your hand over his smaller one, feeling her little feet pressing right against your belly.

“Matilda?” He looks up at you with wide eyes, dark brown eyes that remind you of Tom’s.

“Why do you want her to be named Matilda, sweetie?” You smile, crouching down to tickle him slightly.

“Because mama! If she’s Matilda, she can use her super magic powers, and steal me cookies from the jar above the fridge before dinner!”

“Oh, so you just want a little sister so she can be your little cookie stealer?” You joke, picking Phillip up and resting him against your hip.

“Noooo,” Phillip insists, “I want a little sister because I know I would be the best big brother!”

“Alright, well since Matilda isn’t born yet and can’t steal cookies for you, how does a snow cone sound?”

“Yay! Snowcone! Come on mommy!” Phillip tugs at the sleeve of your shirt as you meet Harrison at the edge of the pool.

“How was it in there bud?” Harrison asks, draping a towel over your shoulders and kissing your cheek.

“My turn,” Phillip giggles before kissing your other cheek.

“Alright boys, there are plenty cheek kisses to go around, but I heard a little guy would like a snowcone,” you smile as Phillip rests his head on your shoulder.

Once you get to the stand, you squeeze your eyes shut when the sickly sweet smell of cherries hits your nose.

You’re not a kid. You’re not in your parent’s station wagon waiting for them to come out of their friends house, the now sour taste of a cherry ice pop lingering on your lips.

“Mommy! Open your eyes silly!” Phillip laughs, tugging at your shirt sleeve.

Harrison gently squeezes your hip, mildly concerned at the glazed over look in your eye.

“what flavor do you want bubs?”

“Could I get blue raspberry?” Phillip asks, “pleaseeee.”

“Of course, nice job using your manners, bubs.”

By the time you get Phillip home for his nap and the blue raspberry snowcone stain cleaned off his chin, you’re exhausted.

“C’mere, lemme give you a little massage,” Harrison says, patting the bed in front of him.

“What would I do without you?” You smile, stripping off your shirt and sitting in front of him, your hand resting on your baby bump.

“Well, you’ll never have to find out. Hey, do you think our baby, who Phil has very aptly named Matilda will have my eyes?”

You think for a moment, “I mean, I hope so, you have very beautiful eyes.”

Harrison’s hands start massaging your shoulders, “Do we tell Phillip?”

You raise an eyebrow, unsure of what he means, “tell Phillip what? That we aren’t naming our daughter Matilda?”

“Hey! Why not? Matilda is a cute name,” Harrison brushes your hair off your neck, pressing his lips to your skin.

“Okay, maybe we can call her Matilda, I feel like we have to get a good look at her first, like, what if she doesn’t look like a Matilda?”

“How do you mean?” Harrison asks, running his arms down your own, intertwining your hands together as he rests his chin on your shoulder.

“You know, I look like a Y/N, and an Adeline if I want to,” you laugh, “you look like a Harrison, Phillip looks like a Phillip. Was that what you were thinking of telling him?’’

“No, I was wondering if we should tell Phillip about his dad…”

You and Harrison haven’t talked about Tom, almost ever. From the day you came back to Boston and damn near collapsed in his arms.

“I- Harrison,” you smile weakly as he hugs you, “I took care of the things I needed to in Idaho.”

“Are you okay? What happened to-,”

“I’m fine,” you choke back a sob, “he’s dead.”

They seem like very contradictory statements.

You killed Tom. You killed him because the FBI was seconds away from catching both of you. In your mind, the only way he could- the only way either of you could escape the police was death.

When you first made the decision to kill Tom along with the rest of the men from your safe house away from home five months ago, you didn’t expect to be pregnant. When you fell in love with Tom Holland and you still had it set in your mind that you’d kill him, you figured you’d put yourself out of your misery shortly after. But if your life taught you anything, you had to clean up your messes. What happened between Tom and you was a mess, no doubt about it. And if you wanted to give your kid a life, more of a life than being known as the kid born from two serial killer, you had to stick with your original plan, no matter how horrible it made you feel. You couldn’t leave your baby parentless, and you certainly couldn’t kill him just because you wanted to die.

You turn around on the bed, cupping Harrison’s cheeks in your hands, “you, for all intents and purposes, have been Phillip’s dad since I found out I was pregnant.”

“I love you,” Harrison sighs, “I love Phillip, and I love Matilda or Julia or Elaina, whatever our baby’s name will be, I love our little family.”

“I love you too,” you smile, kissing him gently, “Thank you for being my sunshine.”

Harrison chuckles as he lays back, pulling you right down with him, your head resting on his chest as he curls the sun necklace in his palm.

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,” he begins to sing, nudging you to sing along with him.

“You make me happy, when skies are grey,” you sing along, smiling as he kisses the top of your head.

“You know, this song puts Phillip to sleep, just like it puts you to sleep,” Harrison smiles, reminiscing on all the times you’ve sung to Phillip with him and ended up almost drooling on his shoulder.

You’ve fallen asleep again, snoring lightly on Harrison’s chest as he rubs your shoulder and kisses the top of your head again.

“Goodnight darling, don’t forget that you’re my sunshine,” Harrison closes his eyes, quickly falling asleep with you.

8 Years Old

“Hey! We need to write Santa a letter!” Phillip jumps up, running around with his toy airplane, plopping down next to you.

“Is that so?” You grin, turning to wiggle an eyebrow at Harrison.

“Yes! Because he got Mattie the doll she wanted! And I got my airplane!”

Harrison holds Matilda close to him, snuggling her into his chest as she giggles and squeezes her plush doll.

“That’s very nice of you Phillip, why don’t we write the letter tomorrow?” You smile, picking up your mug of eggnog right as his foot collided with it, nearly knocking it over.

Suddenly you’re a little kid again, sitting through Christmas with parents who weren’t actually present as you accidentally knocked over your mom’s cup of coffee.

“When you make a mess you have to clean it up!”

“Y/N…”

And it’s not your dad’s biting voice and it’s not your mom’s was withdrawn one.

It’s Harrison and your parents are nowhere in sight, your stomach isn’t covered in coffee and you aren’t getting sent up to your room to spend Christmas alone.

You blink your eyes open and ruffle Phillip’s hair that looks all too much like his dad’s, grounding yourself in reality.

“Merry Christmas,” you smile at him, looking back to Harrison and nodding, a silent gesture that you’re okay.

“Nice save, darling,” Harrison chuckles, watching Matilda reach her arm out and make grabby hands at you.

“Want to come to mama?” You ask, holding your arms out.

“Mama,” Matilda giggles, tossing her doll to the side and crawling out of Harrison’s lap.

She walks over to you, stumbling a few times but ultimately climbing into your lap to snuggle into your body.

Last night Harrison and you exchanged gifts. For a while you’ve just been each other’s partners, that’s how you introduced yourself to Phillip’s friends parents at school and to the parents at Matilda’s play group.

“I got you something,” Harrison says, handing you a small bag as you settle into bed next to him.

You look at the red shiny material of the bag and smile, “thought you said we weren’t going to exchange gifts.”

He shrugs, slinging an arm around your shoulder, “I know but I saw this in the store the other day and couldn’t resist.”

“Well good because I got you something too, it might be stupid so like tell me and I’ll get you something else,” you sigh, turning your grab your small box off the nightstand. You had it specially made in a jewelry shop in the North End, you came across the idea one day while out walking with Matilda, she would tug on your sunshine necklace and remind you of all that time ago when Harrison bought it for you.

You hand him the ring box, resting your head on his shoulder, snuggling into the warmth of his white T-shirt.

“Oh my god,” Harrison chuckles, “open yours too.”

You open up the bag, pulling out a similar ring box.

“You didn’t, Haz…” you break into a huge grin, opening your box as he opens his.

You bought him a ring, in the center was a golden sun.

“You’re my sunshine,” you choke out, catching the glimmering diamond inside your box.

“I know you said we can’t get married, that we can’t legally be husband and wife but I feel, I know that we’re basically husband and wife and we’ve got two lovely kids and, wow I just am obsessed with the idea of calling you my wife.”

You smile through tears as he helps you put the diamond ring on your finger, “I like the idea of calling you hubby I guess.”

“Alright! Family picture! Squish together and I’ll try to get a timer on the camera,” Harrison sets his Polaroid on the fireplace, turning the self timer on for 10 seconds. He jogs over to you, kneeling behind you as Matilda claps her hands.

The camera clicks and you’re positive none of you are looking at it, but you’re going to cherish the photo. Phillip is sticking his tongue out and trying to do bunny ears with his fingers behind Matilda’s head. Matilda is half-turned to you, giggling with her eyes crinkled, she does, in fact, have Harrison’s eyes. Harrison and you are grinning as he rests a gentle hand on your shoulder. You’re a little mismatched family but you wouldn’t have it any other way.

BTS Reaction to you finding out they are a Vampire

Note: AHH, thank you so much!💜 You are so sweet :( I'm so happy that you guys seem to like the supernatural reactions, because I have a lot of fun writing them! I hope you also love this one, some of them got really long xD

(Ps, to everybody else that requested something: It can take some time for me to write it, but I will try to finish all requests.)

Jin

You stood still in shock.

Did you really just hear Jin talking about getting some guys blood?

You must have heard something wrong, right? Nodding your head, you were about to continue your way into the kitchen, when you perceived a sentence that made your breath stuck in your throat. ,,I need at least 7 blood bags, it's been a rough week for me. Can you also make sure it's A and not B? B tastes too sweet." He made a disgusted noise to bring his point across.

Oh shit...were you dating a psychopath?! You definitely needed to get out of the house as soon as possible.

Running down the hallway, you sprinted towards your keys, only to start panicking once you remembered they were in the same room as Jin. Of course this had to happen to you. Reminding yourself to take a deep breath, you slowly walked into the bedroom where he apparently stopped his phone call. Jin didn't see you before, so you should be fine. At least that's what you hope.

,,Princess are you okay?" Stopping on your way to your nightstand, you simply nodded. ,,Then why are you so nervous?"

Oh no. For a few seconds nobody said anything. Jin was confused and you were scared to death.

He took another 5 seconds to put two and two together, but when he finally understood what happened, he felt bad. ,,Look, I know you're probably really shocked and I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner...but I just didn't want you to run away from me because I'm a vampire, you know."

Wait a minute.

,,You are a vampire?!"

Opening his mouth, he suddenly looked around the room. ,,I thought you heard me talking on the phone and that's why you're freaking out?!"

,,I did. But I thought you were some kind of psycho..."

Well, vampire makes more sense.

Namjoon

Namjoon is clumsy, everbody knows that.

But breaking three plates, a vase, the TV and somehow cutting your hand in the process, was a new record even for him.

He hastily stood up to run over to you and take you away from all the shattered glas, but stopped himself in the last second when he saw your delicious blood running down your fingers. Oh, how he wanted to taste it...just a tiny bite in your neck would be everything he needed...

,,Joonie?! A little help would be appreciated!" Your angry voice snapped him back into reality. Sadly, the control it took in Namjoon to stay in his place, did not include keeping his eyes at a normal colour. So what he saw next, was you going from pissed to confused and then to shocked.

Stumbling back, you almost stepped into one of the shards, if Namjoon hadn't caught you. The sudden close proximity made you yelp and scream at the veins going down his eyes. A guilty look crossed his eyes before he said the two words that would haunt you in your dreams for weeks to come.

,,Jagiya, run."

You definitely didn't expect your movie night to turn out this way.

Hoseok

It was your first time meeting Hoseok's best friends and you were really nervous. You wanted to impress not only them, but also your boyfriend. Together, you guys decided it was best to make a simple dinner, so all of you could get to know each other.

About 3 hours in, you could gladly say that Hoseok kept great people around him. Even though some of them talked in a weird way, like they lived in the past, you were still able to have a good time with everyone.

Seokjin, the oldest in the room, turned to you and looked you up and down. His intense gaze made goosebumps appear on your skin. Narrowing his eyes, he seemed to be confused by something. A cough broke Jimin's and Jungkook's conversation about banana milk and made everyone look at Jin. ,,Hoseok, why haven't you bitten her yet? You know it's dangerous for her to walk around like a wrapped up snack, when everyone around you can't tell that she's yours. It's like you give them an open invitation for dinner. You know the other vampires would never decline."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The thumping of your own heart was ringing in your ears and made you question if the others could also hear it. Since you're apparently dining with vampires, yes.

Slowly moving your head to the right, your eyes met the ones of a furious Hoseok. ,,Vampires?" The question was more for yourself than him, so it came out as a whisper. Suddenly realising that Hoseok hadn't told you anything about that part of him, Jin held his hands up in the air. ,,I'm so sorry! I thought she knew!" Poor Jin. He would have to pay for this mistake for a long time.

Yoongi

He had a plan.

One day, when he felt like it was the right time, he would tell you about his true self. He would pick a moment where he knew he could trust you and you would still love him, despite the difference in your nature.

....Yeah, he could scratch that plan because you ruined it. But it was his own fault!

Yoongi knew that you were a curious person, so he can't ask for you to not go into his office. "There is a lock on there for a reason, princess. Please just trust me" he said. Well, what if he was a serial killer and hid all of the dead bodies in there? That's a meaningful thought, right? You obviously couldn't risk dating a psycho. That's why you took the key he hid (unprofessionally) under his pillow and opened the door to his secret room.

Fuck.

There wasn't exactly noticable dead bodies laying on the ground, but the coffin in the middle of the room looked pretty suspicious to you. ,,Didn't I tell you not to go in here?"

Jumping in shock, you walked backwards to create some space between you and Yoongi. ,,Did you kill someone?" Maybe that wasn't the smartest question, but it was the only thing stuck in your mind at that moment.

He shook his head. ,,That's my coffin." ,,What do you mean your coffin? Yoongi, you aren't dead!" He raised his brows.

,,I'm not?"

Maybe he wanted to tell you in a different way, but this was also really amusing.

Jimin

He didn't expect you to be home for at least another hour, but your boss had a family problem, so he told you that you could leave work earlier. You were beyond tired and the only thing on your mind for when you got home, was to lay down in bed with Jimin and cuddle all day. Apparently, fate had a different plan. Opening the door, you were met with the sight of Jimin drinking a deep-red liquid out of a clear bag....it looks a lot like-

,,Is that a blood bag?" Startled, Jimin let go of his treat and stared up at you with big eyes. The once filled bag burst, painting your floor to look like a crime scene. ,,What are you doing here so early?" Shaking your head, you took a step back...just in case. ,,I asked you a question first." Jimin sighed. ,,Okay...I guess it's finally time to tell you the truth. I'm a vampire." You would have laughed in disbelieve and ask Jimin to finally be honest, or you were gone, but the shiny fangs that were showing as he was biting his lip, proved you wrong. You were really dating a vampire.

Taehyung

You noticed that Taehyung loved to collect all of his memories. It started with simple things, like a teddy bear he won for you at a fair, or the watch you gave him as a present for his birthday. Later, you found boxes filled with polaroids, stashed away in his supply closet. Smiling, you sat one of the boxes down in the middle of the bed and grabbed a handful of pictures. Half of the polaroids consisted of photos you and Taehyung have taken, while the other one was of him and his friends. At the bottom of the box, you noticed extremely old looking pictures. Taking them out, the first one was a polaroid of Taehyung's great grandmother. He had once told you that she was a pilot and the plane in the background proved his statement. Switching the pictures, your heart stopped for a second at what you saw. It was Taehyung, wrapping his arm around the same woman you saw in the last picture and looking almost the same as now. ,,Are you serious right now?!" Laughing in disbelieve, you turned around to head to the door. Behind you, a gasp and what sounded a lot like a whine echoud in the living room. ,,Princess, wait! I can explain!" You sighed. ,,There's nothing to explain Jungkook. I understand. You don't feel attrackted to me anymore and Taehyung is a good looking guy...I just need some time to get over it." Uncomfortable silence spread in the room, until the one person you couldn't be more jealous of right now stood up and walked over to you. ,,Uhm...This isn't really my place to say something, but Y/N I think you got something wrong...It's not-"

A single blood droplet finding it's way down Taehyung's collarbone, made you tune out anything else he was saying. Since when did Jungkook like it this rough? You clenched your hands in frustration. Why did you only know so little about Jungkook? Were you such a bad partner? Sensing that you completely misunderstood the situation, Jungkook did the only thing he could think of right now. Telling you the truth.

The Killer Queen - {Roger Taylor X Reader, PART 4}

(It might get hot in there) Word Count: 5K Author’s Note: No one is reading this but I want to write it anyway. Yay. Whoever actually reads this, enjoy! And if you happen to be excellent at playing the drums, you’re not YET in this chapter. You’ll find out why...(I only proofread this quickly so enjoy the typos)

Deeper Conversation Your P.O.V.

The invitation that was written on a thick, black card was in my trembling hands and I just stared at it. My father’s letter was on my mind and the more I thought about it, the worse I felt. Was he threatening me? The guys? It sure seemed like that.

Let’s hope you and your boys don’t let me down. Or else, I am afraid I must ensure your safety and that means you can’t see them any more.

What the hell was that supposed to mean? Was he going to execute my date if he behaved wrongly? Or would he threaten them if I had to go alone? I had no clue and honestly, I didn’t have any low expectations. My father was insane because of his power and it drove him to do terrible things. In all honesty, I didn’t want to go to the charity event. I didn’t want to ask one of them to join me. There would be so many questions! Then again, I was scared what would happen if I didn’t go.

At the end of the way, a charity event was illegal. So in one way, going there wouldn’t be that bad, right? I only had to deliver something, chat with people and keep a pretty smile on my face. It seemed idiot-proof but then he had to say my skills were needed. For what? I had so many questions and thoughts that drove me nauseous. So I threw the invitation on the kitchen island and got up. “Fuck!” I cursed and ran my hands through my hair, pulling just a little bit out of frustration. Anger was bottling up inside me and so was pain. This life was so difficult! I simply wished to escape. I wanted something normal. I wanted friends, just like Brian, Deacy, Freddie and Roger and their friends.

Whatever I ended up doing, I had one week of time. In one week, I’d either be downing a bottle of vodka or then I’d be at a charity event with someone I dared call my friend. A friend I might’ve put in danger already. For that, I couldn’t help but hate my guts.

Two days passed as I just thought. I thought about my feelings, whether I saw Roger as something more than a simple friend, I thought about whether I’d go to the event, I thought about the consequences, a lot. A lot of process wasn’t seen but I figured out that I was definitely interested in Roger and that I had to go to the charity event. Perhaps, asking him wouldn’t be that bad. It wasn’t hosted by criminals so he should be safe. Besides, it was not criminal at all and we could spend time together. It should be just fine!

My nerves were getting the best of me. I had just gotten dressed so I could go and drive my motorcycle. Driving around helped me relax because I had to focus on controlling the fast vehicle. The wind, the speed and the way the road looked like stripes when I drove, it was all a mixture I wished I was experiencing right now. Just as I was putting on my boots, I heard the phone ring. Of course, how typical!

I sighed and made my way to the phone so I could pick up. Gosh, I hoped it wasn’t my father asking me about the damn event. As I brought the phone to my ear, I took a deep breath: ”Y/N”, I said simply.

”Hey there”, A familiar voice surprised me. It was Roger! Immediately a smile formed on my face. Hearing his voice made me oddly happy and I forgot my grumpy attitude. I certainly didn’t expect to hear from him!

“Hi, Rog. How are you?” I wanted to know. Then I sat down on the chair I had dragged by my phone and I twirled the wire again.

“I’m good, thanks. I was just wondering if you had some spare time?”

My heart kickstarted and I could feel it beating against my chest. This could be my opportunity to invite him as my date! I had a feeling Roger was the safest choice anyway. Whether I liked it or not, we had chemistry. Even Mary caught onto it! “I don’t have any plans, no. Are you going to ask me out?” I teased him just the way he had a couple days ago. Roger saw the connection because I heard a little chuckle over the line.

“Actually, I am”, he replied so smoothly. My eyes widened and I afraid he could somehow miraculously hear my silent shock. How was he so smooth and confident? He didn’t seem nervous at all to say something like that! Although, I did like it.

“Intriguing”, I admitted with a big smirk on my face. “Tell me more.”

“As I might’ve mentioned earlier, I’d like to figure out why you’re such a mystery. So I have something in mind. It won’t be fun if I spoil everything. Are you interested or...?” Roger wanted to know and maybe this time I could sense just a tad of nerves in his voice. He seemed genuinely excited about whatever this was and I found it adorable. On a darker part, I knew I could never tell him who I really was. So I would have to dodge his questions and probably frustrate the hell out of him.

“Where and when do we meet?” I wished to know and at the same time, said yes to his invitation. Now I could only hope he’d say the same to mine. That is, once I found the courage to ask him. Even as friends, it wasn’t easy to ask someone to be my date at a charity event. He’d probably be so confused

“I was actually wondering if you’d want to come to my flat”, Roger told me. Another surprise!

“You trust me enough for that? What if I’m a serial killer?” I giggled whimsically, which seemed to be contagious.

“I suppose I’ll find out about that when you have a gun against my head”, Roger replied just as playfully. That was settled then. I would go to his flat. And I couldn’t wait!

After Roger gave me his address, we ended the call and I was more than happy to jump on my bike and get my ass over there. I put on my black helmet that matched with my black boots, black ripped jeans, black leather jacket and my black gloves. Someone would say I was punk. I just loved the colour. With the address in my memory and a somewhat good idea of where he lived, I left my house and got on my bike. The second the engine started and it purred, I got on the road.

Roger’s flat, here I come!

After a fifteen minute drive around London, I found the correct street and the block of flats where Roger lived. He was standing outside on the pavement, smoking as I arrived. He glanced at me and his eyes widened in surprise as he saw me on my bike. I waved and drove towards him, parking my bike at the side of the road and then I took off my helmet. Roger walked over to me as I tried to clear my hair out of my face.

“I surely didn’t expect that”, Roger greeted me with that which made me smile.

“Well, I suppose that’s part of my ‘mystery’ ”, I shrugged casually. This entire mystery thing seemed fun. I found it sweet that he wanted to figure me out but I had no idea how far it could go. At the end of the day, I had a precious secret that would probably scare him away.

“Who knows, maybe we should go riding together? I have a bike in the back”, Roger let me know and he already had me hooked on the idea.

“That sounds like fun!” I admitted to him. It seemed we had another plan settled, for the future.

Together we walked inside and got on the third floor that he lived on. He unlocked the door and we walked inside. The flat smelled like his cologne so I assumed he had showered earlier and put some on before I came. I wasn’t complaining! It wasn’t a huge flat but it wasn’t the smallest either. There was a bathroom to the left once you came inside and I saw a big open kitchen and living room. The hallway continued to the right where his bedroom probably was. It was surprisingly clean inside but it had Roger’s personality stamped all over. He even had a drum set in the living room, which I absolutely loved. I noticed an acoustic guitar there as well, right behind the drums.

Roger walked into the kitchen as I stood nearby, taking in my surroundings. “This is a nice flat. You’ve got a good taste”, I complimented his home and finally looked at him instead of his furniture and art.

“I’m glad someone appreciates it”, He answered me. The way he said that made me wonder if someone else had thought differently about his flat. I was curious about it but I didn’t want to seem nosy. Before I would’ve even gotten a chance to do so, Roger continued: “Would you like something to drink? Tea? Coffee?” He asked me which was so polite. It amazed me how he could be so wild and free while also being so kind and thoughtful. Perhaps it had to do with the fact we were still quite new to each other. I was convinced he was sassy and fussy around the guys, which I already had witnessed with my own two eyes. ¨

“You know, tea sounds good.”

“Roger that”, Roger nodded and laughed at his own joke. It was such a silly thing but it made me crack as well.

As Roger prepared the tea for us, I walked over and took a seat around the round kitchen table he had. His flat was really cosy! I loved that it wasn’t way too big for one person or filled with fancy stuff you’d be terrified to leave a mark on. Although, I wasn’t going to scrape his table anyway. Everything was so nice. I wished I had a place that had my stamp all over it, just like this.

My eyes wandered again and I noticed something on his wall. There was a big blue poster on it with their band name and logo. As I examined it, I noticed tour dates! Of course, they just published their album. It would make sense they had a tour. “You’re going on tour, I see”, I broke the silence and took my eyes off the poster. I noticed that most of the gigs were in the United Kingdom but some were in Germany and I think I read Luxembourg as well!

“Yeah, in September. We’re thrilled but we’ve also practised so much we’re probably going to get sick of each other”, Roger joked around lightheartedly. I watched as he put teabags into two cups and then glanced at the boiling water.

“That’s awesome. I’m happy you guys get to spread your music”, I admitted to him which seemed to make him happy. Roger smiled as he poured the hot water into the cups. He was so adorable, damn!

“So you liked our music?” Roger wondered and now walked to the table, giving me a cup of hot tea that I gladly accepted. And so he sat down on the opposite of me with his tea. Sitting down together like this was nice so far. I felt like I could get used to this.

“Liked? I loved it. You really have something good going on.”

“I hope the people who hear our songs will think like that as well”, Roger told me and looked at his drink. He was stirring the spoon in it because it was still too hot to drink. The sweet scent of the tea was filling my nostrils and it smelled familiar. Maybe this was the sweet scent that mixed with Roger’s cologne? “Now that you know what I do for a living, it would be fair you told me what you do”, Roger continued and then it happened, the questioning began! Of course, he had to choose such a difficult question!

Nervously, I stirred my drink and followed the swirl that I created as I tried to form a proper answer that wasn’t a big lie. “I work for my father in a family business. I deliver messages, attend meetings and events and small stuff like that”, I finally formed my answer and I was happy how it turned out. That reminded me of the charity event! I had to ask him. “Uh- speaking of events and such, there’s a charity event this weekend that I have to attend. I have a plus one so I was wondering if you’d like to come. It’s nothing too crazy, just an evening of small talk and appetizers”, I pushed the question out of my mouth and then prayed to God or whoever sat on the heavenly throne that I didn’t just make a fool out of myself. I didn’t think asking him to join me would be this nerve-wracking!

To my luck, Roger seemed delighted I asked him. “How could I say no? It sounds like the perfect opportunity to get a glimpse of your life”, he accepted my invitation and I noticed that cocky smirk on his face. It was probably the only smirk on earth I didn’t want to wipe off. I got a date!

“That’s great! I was scared you’d think I was pushy and say no”, I admitted although I could’ve very well kept it as my own information.

“I’m the one who asked you here to be bombarded with questions so if anyone’s pushy or nosy, it’s me”, Roger said which helped me relax. My muscles kept tensing up every once in a while but somehow he made me less tense. Although, I was sure he was also the reason why I was tense.

“Fair enough”, I replied and took a sip of my ta. It was delicious! It also made me realize I was really warm so I took off my leather jacket and put it on the chair next to me. Being in just a white T-shirt felt so much better! I realized then that Roger had fallen quiet. As I looked at him again, he was quick to look away and he drank his hot tea. I couldn’t help but wonder what he was thinking.

“So, are you seeing anyone?” Roger asked another question. That simple question made my heart flutter strangely. Funny that he wanted to know. I was sure he didn’t mean anything special with that question but a girl could only dream. I wonder if things would take a turn once I told him I was as single as one could be. Then my mind just had to return to my ex and my smile faded away.

“No, I’m not. I haven’t in a while”, I revealed a little bit too much. A simple ‘no’ would’ve surely been enough. Roger noticed that his question made me distressed and I hated that. The last thing I wanted right now was pity or anything that resembled that! “Are you?” I cleared my throat and asked him before he could focus on my past relationships too much. Although talking about it sounded tempting, I figured now wasn’t the moment to do so.

“Not yet but I have my eyes on someone”, Roger let me know after a brief silence. The first word made me relieved but when he revealed the rest, my breath nearly hitched in my throat. I should’ve guessed! Of course, he had his eyes on a prize. Roger had an actual life that I wasn’t part of until less than a couple weeks ago. Surely he had to fancy someone. But it was good, right? At least, now I could have a good reason to think of him as just a friend. I didn’t want to make things awkward by being quiet so I smiled. Honestly, I was happy for him although I was slightly disappointed.

“That’s nice. I’m sure she or he is lucky”, I answered as sweetly as I could. At least I was good at pretending, thanks to my background. It was surprising how often my good acting and lying skills came in handy. Although, I didn’t want to be fake to Roger - or anyone else really.

For some odd reason, Roger had this odd smile on his face. His eyes never left me and I started to wonder if I did something wrong. Eventually, he decided to say something. “I guess you could say she’s a lucky girl”, Roger made a remark to what I said earlier. “But she’s also kind of oblivi-” His sentence was cut off by the doorbell that rang. His smile faded and he looked pissed off for some reason although I was relieved. I wasn’t sure how long I could listen to him talking about the lucky girl until I’d show my feelings on my face. I had to be happy for him but it was hard, at least now.

“I’ll get that”, Roger mumbled and got up. I nodded and stayed seated, which I preferred right now. My mind was in a haze and I couldn’t believe I let my hopes up. What a dumb move, I told myself. Who was I to think someone like Roger had eyes for me? All of a sudden, I heard a woman’s voice. I didn’t want to eavesdrop but I couldn’t help it because they weren’t being exactly quiet.

“You’re such a sweetheart, Rogie!” A high-pitched voice squealed by the door. My mind went straight to the lucky girl he mentioned before. It had to be her! Hearing her voice made my gut twist and I felt a bit sick. Why did she have to come right now? Would she stay? Oh god, I hoped not. I wasn’t ready to play pretend as a third wheel.

“Whatever you say, peach”, Roger replied to her. She even had a gross but sweet nickname! That was fantastic. I wanted to leave so I could clear my head but to leave now would be suspicious. Unless I figured out an escape plan.

“I’ll hold onto that thought until tonight. Don’t be late, okay? It would suck if I had to start without you”, the real mystery woman said her goodbyes and then the door shut. What could they possibly be doing tonight? Did I even want to know? Soon enough, Roger returned and I plastered that fake smile back on my face. Happy thoughts, Y/N!

Roger sat down back on the same seat and he stirred his tea which had cooled down a bit by now. “Sorry about that. Where were we?” He asked me oddly. I was pretty sure he remembered or maybe meeting her blew his mind to another dimension. I knew that I didn’t want to carry on our earlier conversation.

“I believe we were playing truth or truth, where we just ask each other stuff”, I refreshed his memory as well as I could at the moment.

“Ah- how could I forget?”

After a couple of cups of tea and what seemed like a thousand questions and playful answers, I felt a little bit better. Somehow, I managed to put my feelings aside and enjoy my time with Roger. We had changed our surroundings by sitting down on his soft couch. Right now, we were sat there as we watched the tv. We were watching a show called Sanford and son. I had watched it before and I knew it was good but I found my mind wandering.

“Hello?” Roger waved his hand near my face which made me flinch. I didn’t even realize I had fallen into the pits of my own mind.

“Sorry, what did you say?” I shook my head and tried to wake up my mind. Roger luckily didn’t seem to be bothered about my behaviour.

“I asked if you play any instrument. Do you?”

Fuck. A master at music asked me if I played. I had tried playing multiple instruments and I knew the basics of some. But I didn’t feel confident enough to tell him that. “I have played instruments, yeah but I don’t know if I would call myself any good”, I gave him my answer. He seemed happy to hear that, oddly enough.

“Perfect!” He clapped his hands together. What now? Before I could ask, he got up and continued: “I want to teach you something.”

My eyes widened and I felt nervous all over again. Did he want to hear me play? Oh dear...”This could end up a disaster, just forewarning you”, I admitted truthfully. Roger deserved to get a warning, at least.

“Come on, sit behind the drums. I promise it’ll be fun”, he told me excitedly. There was a spark in his beautiful blues and I could hear he really wanted to show me something. So I did as told. I got off the comfortable couch and then sat down on the chair behind his drums. Roger was following me closely and he stood behind me. “Here you go”, he smiled as he handed me his drumsticks. Gosh, I was really nervous to play but it was kind of fun as well.

“Thank you and I’m honoured to sit on your throne, my drama queen”, I thanked him as I grabbed the drumsticks. Although I couldn’t see his face right now, I could almost feel the energy radiating off his smirk. For a moment, I wished I could carry on the flirting but I was scared he’d find me annoying.

“Well, aren’t you lucky a princess can borrow the throne too”, he said and poked my shoulder. I turned around to face him and then his words hit me. Lucky. If the girl hadn’t visited earlier, I would’ve probably thought he was hinting I was the lucky girl. It had to be a misunderstanding. Coincidences happen, words get used in different settings. This couldn’t mean a thing.

I cleared my throat and turned around so I was facing the drums again. “What do I do now?” I asked him and abandoned our conversation. Roger sighed and began to name all the parts of the set. “...this is a cymbal, hi-hats, high and middle toms and the heart of the drum, the bass drum”, he finished the long list by tapping the big bass drum. Hearing the love in his voice that he had for the drums was heartwarming. He was really passionate about this. “Give it a go”, he encouraged me. So I put my foot on the pedal and pressed hard, making a loud thud sound. It surprised me how loud it was inside! I wondered what the neighbours thought. But if he still lived here, it was probably all fine.

“Eager are we? It’s good to use pressure so the sound doesn’t die off immediately. The drums aren’t meant for quiet environments”, Roger let me know and I listened carefully. He had a point there!

“Being loud is half of the fun”, I said without even thinking. Damn, it’s like everything I said today had a suggestive undertone! I just hoped Roger didn’t catch it. Who was I kidding? Of course, he did! He wasn’t an idiot.

“That’s true. Now let’s get to the fun part. This is very easy. Think of it as a four-step play, you hit the bass on one, the snare on three and on all four you hit the hi-hat”, Roger explained to me as it was the simplest thing on earth but I had a feeling I’d screw it up anyway. I got it but at the same time, I didn’t.

“Lead me through it, drummer”, I raised my hands in the air because I was obviously defeated.

Roger was more than happy to help. “How about I clap on each step so you can focus on the snare and the bass first?” He suggested to me. I thought it sounded reasonable and I agreed to it. Just like that, he began to clap and I did my best at playing. I hit the bass, waited, hit the snare and waited. It was actually quite simple!

“See? Now you just add the hi-hat and you’ll be good to go”, he declared happily. I wasn’t as confident. I gave it a go and noticed that I forgot the pressure on the bass once I focused on one more thing. As I tried and tried, I wondered how the hell Roger could hit each piece like it was the easiest thing on earth! He must’ve practised a lot.

“This seems much easier when you do it”, I let him know as I once again made a tiny mistake by hitting both the snare and the bass at the same go.

“You’re doing good. But I can help you if you don’t mind”, I was offered his help. Although I didn’t know what that was I wanted his help and fast. I wished to master at least one drum beat in my life! Whether I’d be something as simple as this or something else.

“Alright”, I gave in. Roger came closer to me slowly until I could almost feel him against my back.

“I’ll be your hands, you’ll control the bass. I’ll let go at some point and you can continue by yourself, okay?” He explained to me while gently grabbing both my wrists. His gentle touch felt magical although I had to remind myself we were just playing the drums! But damn, I couldn’t help but wonder what his touch would actually feel like. He was almost pressed against my back now and it was a tempting idea to lean against him. But I couldn’t. I shouldn’t.

“Okay. It’s like learning how to ride a bike”, I finally said something. And so, I got ready to play. Roger counted to four and led my hand to the hi-hats. In almost perfect sync I hit the bass. I was glad he couldn’t see my face right now! I probably looked like I had been caught doing something I shouldn’t have done. My cheeks were hot and I was chewing my bottom lip. Why did he have this effect on me? My poor heart was once again running errands. I wished Roger couldn’t actually hear my heartbeat over the drums.

“Now we go faster, can you do that?” He asked me after we played it over a few times. It was a miracle I could focus.

“Sure”, I nodded to that and tried to push away my dirty thoughts. Roger was probably amazing in bed. He knew how to maintain a rhythm and he controlled his body amazingly! Fuck- I couldn’t think about him like that. Get a grip, girl!

No matter what I told myself, it was undeniable I was interested in him and most certainly fascinated by him. It’s almost like it became real to me when I learned he was off the market. Why did I always want what I couldn’t have? I took a deep breath and focused on the rhythm he set. With his lead, I actually played well and I began to control my hands a bit more although he was still holding onto me. A few moments later, Roger let go and my arms automatically continued as if he still had a grip on me. A massive smile spread on my face and I kept playing, amazed that I managed to play without messing up yet.

“Jesus Roger! It worked!” I cheered excitedly and then stopped playing. I held onto the drumsticks tightly and turned around so I was facing him. Roger was sitting on a chair right behind me and he had a big grin on his face as well. He seemed proud.

“I told you so”, he said just as joyfully. For a moment, I felt happier than I had in a hot minute. Something as simple as this felt like a milestone for me. I was so happy I could’ve kissed him! But then something called reality came knocking on the door and I remembered he was into someone else, or so I thought. Our eyes locked and I found myself falling into an abyss once more. Why did he have to be so alluring?

All of a sudden, Roger chuckled and looked away from my eyes for a moment. Immediately, I wondered why. His cheeks seemed a bit more flush yet there was that confident ‘I’ve got everything under control’ spark in his eyes. He was hard to read or perhaps I was blinded. “Damnit, Y/N. I’ve been trying to tell you but you don’t want to catch on”, Roger started something. My throat felt dry by now. My hopes got up but my mind was screaming I had done something wrong. I hated to feel like this! I was so unsure and vulnerable.

Before I could ask him about it, Roger decided to make his actions speak louder than words. He put his warm hand behind my head ever so lightly so his thumb brushed against my jaw and then he closed the gap between us by pressing his soft lips against mine. My heart almost burst like a firework as things happened faster than my mind could even process it. Our lips moulded together although I was frozen of shock and surprise. Roger kissed me!

VENOM … FOR KIDS?

Throughout much of development and production on Venom, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Sony Pictures would follow the example set by Deadpool and make the violent character’s solo debut an R-rated feature. That conclusion proved wrong, though, when the film’s official rating was confirmed to be the more kid-friendly PG-13.

#Venom is officially rated PG-13. Hearing from studio sources the reason is so that Venom and Spider-Man can face off at some point down the line. If the movie is R, it’s hard to do that.

Rumors first began circulating in August (via Variety) that Venom probably wouldn’t be Sony’s first R-rated film based on a Marvel Comics property.

“Some members of Sony’s brain trust believe that the film should push the very limits of PG-13 without crossing over into a higher rating,” stated the report, which cites unidentified studio sources.

A BIG CAMEO?

The rumor machine shifted into high gear in January when a Collider host reported that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man — the star of Spider-Man: Homecoming and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s youngest star — might show up in Venom.

The report was denied by various official sources in the months that followed, but the shared status of the Spider-Man character — who became part of Marvel’s cinematic universe via a partnership with Sony Pictures — kept the report from being completely dismissed. The rumor regarding a Spider-Man cameo resurfaced in August when Venom director Ruben Fleischer gave a conspicuously noncommittal response to questions about the character appearing in the film.

“I honestly don’t know what I’m allowed to say,” Fleischer during an interview with The Los Angeles Times. “I mean, I know the answer — I’ve seen the movie. But I don’t want to get in trouble for saying something I’m not supposed to.”

And just like that, the rumor mill began turning again.

A LATE ARRIVAL

The end of filming didn’t stop the flow of casting news, with Luke Cage and This Is Usactor Ron Cephas Jones announced as one of the actors making an appearance in Venom just a few months before the film hits theaters.

The Hollywood Reporter made Jones’ presence in the film official, but his role in the feature has yet to be revealed.

NEW TRAILER, NEW SYMBIOTES

Another trailer for Venom (see above) arrived online July 31, and it offered the most action of any preview of the film so far. Along with showcasing quite a bit of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and his symbiotic alien alter ego, the trailer also offered a peek at some of the other symbiotes and their hosts — including a shot near the end of Hardy and Riz Ahmed’s characters engaged in battle while enveloped in their respective alien partners.

The trailer also debuted some of the footage that was shown at Comic-Con earlier in the month, finally providing everyone who couldn’t make it to San Diego with a peek at the much-discussed preview.

VILLAIN (AND MORE) REVEALED

Sony confirmed quite a bit about Venom during the studio’s Comic-Con panel in July. Not only did the studio show off some new footage from the film, but it also confirmed that Venom would face off against another alien symbiote named Riot in the film.

Ahmed’s character will reportedly be the human host for Riot, but that could change, given the alien’s ability to shift between hosts.

Although the footage that debuted during the event hasn’t been released online, The Hollywood Reporter has a detailed description of the clips, which include a scene that depicts “Venom’s head stretching out of Brock’s body to have a conversation with him, similar to what might happen in the comics, and Venom making axes with his own hands.”

LIFE AND SYMBIOTES

The character played by Rogue One actor Riz Ahmed was also confirmed — with some new details — during Sony’s Comic-Con panel.

Ahmed will portray Dr. Carlton Drake, a billionaire inventor and head of the Life Foundation, who believes humanity’s future lies in outer space. His interest in cosmic exploration brings him into contact with the powerful alien symbiotes, and Ahmed confirmed that he would end up becoming host to one of the shape-shifting creatures.

It appears certain now that Venom will be a tale of two (or more) symbiotes.

CONSIDERING CARNAGE?

The film’s high-profile cast got substantially bigger with the addition of two-time Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson (True Detective, Natural Born Killers) late in 2017.

The initial report of Harrelson’s attachment to Venom didn’t identify the role the veteran actor would play in the film. Variety simply indicated that he would play “a henchman of sorts,” but now the actor himself has offered some clarification.

Speaking to Collider, Harrelson revealed that his role in Venom will be a small one — but will likely increase significantly in the sequel.

“[It’s a] roll of the dice, because I’m just … I’m in a little fraction of this movie, but I’ll be in the next one, you know?” he said. “So I haven’t read that script, but anyways, just rolled the dice.”

It’s unlikely that Harrelson would play the traditional, lower-tier henchman role in any film these days, and rumors have suggested that he might play Cletus Kasady, a serial killer who became the villain Carnage in Marvel Comics lore. His description of the role as a small one and indication that he’d be in a sequel suggests that his character could be introduced in Venom before becoming the primary villain of the second film.

First introduced in a 1992 issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, Carnage is an offspring of the Venom symbiote that bonded with Kasady and lacks any moral foundation whatsoever. One of Spider-Man and Venom’s most dangerous, unpredictable foes, Carnage is a superpowered psychopath who wields all of the same powers as Venom and embraces — rather than fights to control — the bloodlust brought on by the alien symbiote.

Whatever role Harrelson plays in the film, it will be a reunion for him and Fleischer, who directed Harrelson in Zombieland.

ANIMATED HOMAGE

It’s not officially sanctioned by the studio, but a video making the rounds online offers a decidedly different spin on the second trailer for Venom.

YouTube user Darth Blender posted a remix of the trailer that replaces the live-action footage with clips from the popular 1990s television show Spider-Man: The Animated Series. The result is a surprisingly well-synchronized version of the trailer that should evoke some serious nostalgia for fans of the early incarnations of Spider-Man’s famous foe (and occasional ally).

We are Venom, indeed.

AT LONG LAST … VENOM!

After the first, Venom-less trailer for Venom received a less-than-stellar reception, Sony Pictures made up for past mistakes with a second trailer that went all-in on the fiendish black symbiote.

The trailer debuted after the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon in April, and it reveals quite a bit of the story that will connect Hardy’s journalist character, Eddie Brock, with the sentient creature that turns him into the powerful antihero known as Venom. Most importantly, however, is that the trailer offers the first good look at Venom in toothy, tongue-curling action.

The trailer was accompanied by a new poster for the film that depicts Eddie Brock in mid-transformation to Venom.

FROM WAKANDA TO SYMBIOTE CITY

Sony Pictures has reportedly recruited a prominent composer to provide the musical component to Venom’s solo feature. According to Deadline, Black Panthercomposer Ludwig Goransson will score the Venom movie.

The arrangement will be a reunion of sorts, as Goransson previously scored Fleischer’s 2011 comedy 30 Minutes or Less. Goransson is best known for his recent work on Black Panther and his frequent collaborations with that film’s director, Ryan Coogler, having scored both Creed and Fruitvale Station. He is also a frequent collaborator with actor-musician Donald Glover on his Childish Gambino music albums.

FOOTAGE, FINALLY!

After promising that something big would debut February 8, the studio followed through with the very first teaser trailer for Venom, offering audiences a sneak peek at the tone of Tom Hardy’s spin on the popular character.

The teaser (see above) features Eddie Brock (Hardy) prominently, but doesn’t reveal much of his lethal alter ego. There’s a scene depicting the squirming, black symbiote that — in Marvel Comics lore — bonds with Eddie and gives him his powerful abilities, but that’s about it as far as any look at the film’s namesake.

FIRST POSTER

The first, official poster for Venom was released February 7, and the image — which features the character’s iconic white eyes against a black background — was accompanied by a tease that something big will debut “tomorrow” (meaning February 8).

THAT’S A WRAP

In late January, Hardy posted a photo on Instagram to announced the conclusion of filming — for him, at least — on Venom.

PICTURE PREVIEW

The first official photo from Venom was released by Sony Pictures in January 2018, offering an early look at Hardy as Eddie Brock, complete with his reporter notebook.

Posted on IGN, the photo was accompanied by a video from the Venom panel that was held during the Brazil Comic-Con Experience in December. The video features a look at the set of the film with some commentary from the film’s director and cast.

Hardy posted a few additional, behind-the-scenes photos from the set of the film in recent weeks on Instagram, often showing the film’s comics-inspired promotional art on his clothing or members of the film’s creative team.

POSTERS, WE PRESUME?

Some of the first promotional material for Venom appeared to have finally gone public in early December 2017, with Collider and Argentinian fan site MarvelFlix both posting photos from the Brazilian convention Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) of promotional images for Venom posted at the Sony Pictures booth there.

Along with teasing Hardy’s attachment to the film, the photo also revealed which incarnation of Venom the actor will bring to the screen: Eddie Brock.

In Marvel Comics lore, Eddie Brock was a photographer who became the host of the alien entity known as Venom — which imbues its host with powerful abilities but also increases its host’s bloodlust and violent tendencies. Its previous host, Spider-Man, realized the danger it presented and managed to separate himself from it after a struggle both psychological and physical. Over the years, the character has spent time outside the traditional villain role and even went through a period in which he acted as a vicious, criminal-chasing vigilante while bonded with Brock.

Venom’s first big-screen appearance featured Topher Grace in the role of Brock, who bonded with the alien in director Sam Raimi’s 2007 film.

SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

Along with Hardy in the lead role, the cast of Venom also includes four-time Academy Award nominee Williams, who is expected to portray the film’s female lead.

According to a September 2017 report from Variety, Williams will likely play a district attorney and possibly the love interest of Hardy’s character. Also attached to the film in supporting roles are Slate and Veep actor Reid Scott, with Mully actor Scott Haze also rumored for an unidentified role. Slate is rumored to be playing a scientist in the film.

DARK AND DISTINCT

Although Spider-Man: Homecoming was firmly set within Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe, Venom will reportedly be set in its own, separate Sony Pictures universe, despite the character’s ties to Spider-Man. The script for the film was penned by Scott Rosenberg (Pain & Gain), Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), and Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey).

The notion of distancing Venom from Spider-Man and the Marvel Studios universe came as a surprise to fans when it was first rumored in March 2017, and continues to be the subject of much debate among comics fans and movie industry pundits. Given the critical and commercial success of Spider-Man: Homecoming and the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe up to this point, there is plenty of incentive to tie Venom to those films, but all signs point to Sony positioning Venom as the first film in a new cinematic universe based on Spider-Man spinoff properties.

Lucifer Season 6 Ending Explained

This article contains Lucifer Season 6 spoilers.

No Netflix resurrections this time, as Lucifer has departed this mortal realm after six terrific seasons. The show’s fans managed to rescue it from cancellation once, and the streaming service stepped up to keep the party going at Lux several times, but we’ve had to say goodbye to Lucifer, Chloe and the rest of our faves for good now.

There was a lot going on in the final season, as you might have expected before you even hit play on the first installment. There were certainly plenty of loose ends to tie up from Season 5, and a big new season arc to deal with after Lucifer’s estranged daughter from the future arrived on the scene with very bad tidings: Lucifer was set to suddenly vanish, leaving soon-to-be mom Chloe on Earth alone, and Rory without a dad.

Lucifer Season 6 was a huge improvement on Season 5, and the writers seemed to have a clear course mapped out from the very first episode all the way through to the series finale. Everyone got their happy ending eventually, even if some of them were a little bittersweet.

Let’s take a closer look at how everything wrapped up for Lucifer and the gang…

Lucifer

After diabolical French mercenary Vincent Le Mec kidnapped Rory and took her to the place where she told Lucifer he would soon disappear and never be seen again (according to her knowledge of past events) Lucifer and Chloe decided to ambush Vincent and his thugs at the scene, even if it meant Chloe got hurt or Lucifer died.

Chloe did get hurt quite badly, but she and Lucifer made short work of Le Mec’s henchmen, and Lucifer tried to get through to him about his ongoing guilt and terrible life choices. Though Rory eventually managed to get free of her chains, her instinct was to try and kill Le Mec for what he’d done to her.

Lucifer feared that killing her torturer would only lead to more guilt and pain, so Rory let Le Mec go. Unfortunately, he tried to attack them again, and Chloe shot him. He became impaled on Rory’s feathers and died, going straight to Hell – which he absolutely deserved – but everyone was a bit shaken by the fact that both Rory and Lucifer made it through their expected temporal crisis, and Rory realized that their continuing presence on Earth meant that Lucifer would still abandon them. But why?

The answer came to Chloe and Rory later, when they heard that Lucifer had helped Dan get to Heaven. Chloe remembered he’d previously helped a former criminal break his Hell loop and get to Heaven, too. Lucifer seemed to have learned a lot in his therapy sessions with Dr. Linda!

Rory convinced Lucifer that instead of ruling Hell with an iron fist, he should return there and help as many other souls trapped in Hell loops as he could. Lucifer was reticent to do so, but knew that if he did leave Chloe and go to Hell she would go on to give birth to Rory without him and Rory could return to the future where she belonged.

After Rory traveled forward in time, Lucifer and Chloe shared an emotional last night at Lux, and Lucifer indeed left to become a therapist to the troubled denizens of Hell so that he didn’t alter Rory’s future. They had slowly bonded and he had grown to love his daughter so much in the short time he knew her.

We later saw that Vincent Le Mec was a patient on Lucifer’s couch in Hell, but sadly didn’t seem to be making much progress under Lucifer’s care!

Rory

Rory arrived back in the future as Chloe was dying. It seemed that everything she’d told Chloe about their wonderful lives together was true, and Chloe acknowledged the events of their shared past with Lucifer when she and Rory had a last heart-to-heart at Chloe’s deathbed. They agreed to meet “on the other side” as Chloe passed away, but Rory’s future beyond that remained unclear.

Chloe

Chloe returned to work for the LAPD, and became a Lieutenant. She was often visited by Amenadiel, who was pleased to see that the work he’d done during his brief time at the department had paid dividends before he started his rather important new job.

Rory was born right on schedule, and everyone (minus Lucifer of course) was there to welcome Chloe’s new baby girl home.

In the future, Chloe passed away and went to Heaven. Amenadiel was there to meet her, but instead of taking Chloe to Heaven he took her to Hell and into the arms of her devilish beloved, where they kissed and then got to spend the rest of eternity together. Well, as far as we know!

Linda and Charlie

Linda carried on being the best, most patient therapist in LA, and raised her growing son Charlie, who turned out to be a sweet little angel – a real one, with wings! Even though she said she wouldn’t publish her tell-all book about helping Lucifer over the years, we like to think she changed her mind and did it anyway.

Amenadiel

Amenadiel rose to the challenge of being God, taking his seat on the throne in the Silver City and becoming the kind of God who didn’t feel comfortable being bowed down to. He welcomed the angels of Heaven to his side, and seemed content with his new path as the universe’s ultimate benevolent deity.

Amenadiel was busy in Heaven, but didn’t ever really leave his family on Earth behind, and took an active role in their lives. He was even there to see Charlie unexpectedly get his wings on his second birthday!

Dan

Dan (Kevin Alejandro) managed to get into Heaven after first idling in Hell for years (thanks to Lucifer) and then becoming a frustrated ghost on Earth (thanks to Rory), but he was finally able to move on to the afterlife after he saw Trixie one last time and made peace with leaving his daughter behind, knowing that she was a strong, smart young woman who had nothing but good memories of him and the time they spent together.

We saw that Dan reunited with Charlotte (Tricia Helfer) in Heaven, and the two seemed very much in love. Dan was naturally extremely delighted to find that he still got to eat his favorite dessert in the afterlife: chocolate pudding cups!

Ella

Despite the shock of learning the extent of Lucifer’s secret earlier in the season, Ella managed to process all the weirdness that had taken place around her at the LAPD over the years.

Her new relationship with Dan’s official replacement, Carol Corbett (Scott Porter), seemed to be healthy and honest, with both dealing with some personal problems that they were open to discussing. Carol talked in depth to Ella about his alcoholism, and Ella opened up to Carol about her ongoing trauma from dealing with her last boyfriend Pete, who turned out to be a horrific serial killer.

When we left Ella and Carol, they were welcoming a fresh batch of recruits to Ella’s new STEM program, the Miss Lopez STEM Initiative.

Mazikeen and Eve

Maze got cold feet about tying the knot with Eve earlier in the season, and the two learned to accept that not everything in their relationship would be smooth sailing. But after marrying in a very sweet ceremony that involved another well-deserved kick in the emotional nuts for Adam, they partnered up to lay the smackdown on criminals as part of their dream bounty hunter business, and lived life to the max.

Chapter 7

Ahhh next chapter is...going to brutalize my soul...

1. At first glance, this does seem really stupid, but it fits--especially with Bum’s mentality

Bum is about to do something super scary. He is going to try and run away from a serial killer with two broken legs. Like. That is fucking terrifying. Trying to do something to calm himself down before he leaves makes sense, even if it’s something as unimportant as trying to change clothes.

And it will also make him stand out less, which will cause less people to stare at him and question him, which would make him even more nervous. After the ordeal he went through, the last thing he wants to deal with is the judgmental stares of strangers.

This is also a way for him to keep Sangwoo’s secret safe. It doesn’t even seem to occur to him to rat out Sangwoo, which...that can say multiple things about him. He obviously still holds affection for Sangwoo (or, well, not Sangwoo but the sweet treatment he can sometimes get from Sangwoo), so he doesn’t want to see Sangwoo in jail.

He also probably doesn’t really...care about the murders Sangwoo committed. He feels morally repulsed about it, which is why he can’t do it himself even under dire circumstances that would warrant these measures, but on a personal level, that part doesn’t bother him so much as the fact that it’s Sangwoo doing the killing. I honestly believe that if Sangwoo treated Bum lovingly and was exclusive with him, Bum would’ve accepted Sangwoo’s serial killer tendencies and made sure there was no way Sangwoo could get caught.

2. Yes, why don’t we fkkn pull out the dead bodies, my clothes might be in there somewhere

What the fuck Bum, oh my god. OTL

Or maybe Bum subconsciously knows his mind is playing tricks on him and that it’s fake. Or maybe he really does think it could be real, but he doesn’t want it to be, so he opens up to make sure.

But what weirds me out the most is the fact that Bum doesn’t actually...respond when he seemingly pulls out an arm and dismembered limbs fall out. No desire to vomit. No horror. Only, he’s more confused and grossed out, but he seems more...detached from the situation than anything else. Which is even weirder when I consider how Bum is very vividly/visually piecing together how these clothes once belonged to women who were alive.

3. Honestly, I really want to know more about Sangwoo as a serial killer

Heeyyyy CEO girl’s undies are there too.

Here, we have clothes from what I can assume are the clothes of all the women Sangwoo murdered. But the moment Bum enters the picture, we don’t see anything explicit like Sangwoo bringing home women to kill them. So it makes these clothes have this air of...mystery. Like. If these are from old kills, we can assume that Sangwoo already put them through the laundry, so why are they in the laundry again? And if they are new kills, then why the heck isn’t there any explicit mentions of them, cuz Koogi isn’t the type to shy away from that?

If the former, I can assume that, maybe, Sangwoo is planning to dress Bum up in these clothes then try and fuck him in it. This might be the ‘reward’ he was thinking up had Bum not crossed the line. Actually...oh my god, this might be a mix of girls he has killed in the past + his mom’s clothes...Sangwoo...

ANYWAYS, in the latter...so, this is more or less through Bum’s eyes, so the lack of portrayal for Sangwoo’s kills could reflect Bum’s denial. He doesn’t want to see it happening, doesn’t want to connect the killing with Sangwoo--especially since it drives home just how close he is to getting killed by Sangwoo--so we don’t get to see that in his narrative.

4. God, this man does not have a good life doesn’t he

Bum is obviously conflicted. No matter what he chooses, it’s hell for him either way. The choices here is either the devil he has known for years--one he knows that he can survive--or an entirely unknown devil that can give him what he wants, but most likely before that devil kills him.

[As an aside, honestly, I’d probably stay with Sangwoo if those were my only two choices...Sangwoo seems like he can be manipulated if you can play his game right and there could even be some merit to keeping him together. But with Bum’s uncle, we’d both be in a losing game because he’s useless. However, I won’t deny that uncle here is the safest choice, even if I don’t get anything out of it in the end]

5. Goddamn Koogi, fkkn applaud you

Seriously, the way Koogi portrays Bum’s thought processes are amazing.

So, Bum obviously has some...sort of psychotic disorder because these visual and auditory hallucinations are another level. The thing is, Bum also seems to know very well that they aren’t real. With psychosis, the person usually can’t discern it from reality. In a way, it becomes their reality. Sangwoo seems to match this definition more actually, but I can’t say for sure because we haven’t gotten the in-depth look into his hallucinations like Bum here.

Anyways, going on, rather than a psychotic break from reality, it’s more like this is Bum’s way of parsing out his thoughts because, for whatever reason, he’s unable to think them through internally. Which fits with how indecisive he can be and how his actions can change on a dime.

Bum is a more...instinctual person. Like how Sangwoo seems to react in real time to his surroundings and situations, Bum reacts based on learned habits, like a broken record on repeat. It makes it difficult for him to adapt to situations unless he has, in some way, experienced it before. Both of them respond instinctually, but for Sangwoo, it’s with calculated anger, him trying to come up on top and make it so that he can never feel powerless.

But for Bum, he responds sexually. I don’t know if his uncle has always been sexually abusing him because if not, then I’m not sure where Bum’s hypersexuality comes from--unless it came due to not having any sexual experience until his uncle raped him later in life.

Either way, since Bum believes he has literally nothing to offer but his body--and it can also give him pleasure in the meanwhile, which is probably the only times he gets a dopamine release--that is Bum’s primary response.

6. Oooffff Bum’s thoughts in literally plain view

Bum is still holding onto his image of Sangwoo, as well as the sweet moments he had with him. Because that is obviously what Bum wants, more than anything. But the thing is, Bum knows that Sangwoo doesn’t actually love him. Sangwoo will end up killing him if he crosses the line--not just the metaphorical one Sangwoo ‘carved’ on the wooden floor. But every single line that Sangwoo draws up in the future as well.

With his uncle, if he crosses the line, then what he gets is a beating, but for the most part, he’s ignored. He’s able to go outside. If he keeps to himself, his uncle won’t care about him outside of whatever physical ‘sessions’. But with Sangwoo, if he crosses the line, then he’s useless. Killing him will be give Sangwoo more entertainment than keeping him alive. And there are so many lines Bum can’t cross, to a point where he won’t be able to live a life. With his uncle, it’s just about surviving certain moments. With Sangwoo, it’s about surviving second by second. Especially since he knows Sangwoo is a serial killer, so I think subconsciously, Bum knows Sangwoo can’t keep him alive if he doesn’t follow the rules.

7. Oh, wow, scratch my earlier comment, so Bum actually did have a psychotic break lol

...Though, it’s still like Bum knows that something is off about what he’s seeing.

He’s never had qualms about screaming for his life. We yell at Sangwoo not to break his leg, he whines about his broken leg, he complains to Sangwoo when being washed in the tub, and in the next chapter, he even calls Sangwoo a motherfucker.

So...why is it that, when he’s about to be killed, he doesn’t yell out to Sangwoo or beg to him?

Yes, he’s visually hallucinating (or whatever term is suppose to apply here arjgoerjgoe) time being faster than it actually is, but it’s still as if a part of him knows that it isn’t Sangwoo in front of him. It’s like he’s lost in his visualizations of a story where Sangwoo does kill him, like the visceral reaction a watcher has to a horror movie they get too into.

8. Wow, this really shows a more...attached reaction to leaving Sangwoo

Quietly bidding adieu to Sangwoo’s presence gives this feeling that Bum doesn’t actually want to leave. But he also wants to survive. It’s similar to how suicidal people don’t want die, they just want to escape the pain.

9. How people reacted once the shutdown ended lololol

Oh god imagine if KS happened during the pandemic O_O

ANYWAYS. The fact that Bum doesn’t fkkn check to see if Sangwoo is there. The fact that he doesn’t keep a hand on the door handle so that he could close the door. The fact that he doesn’t do it slowly and quietly.

No seriously, so many times and this one is probably the worst. Bum continuously does things that make it seem like he wants to get caught. It’s like he doesn’t fully commit to his plan.

It’s more like...instead of wanting to escape, he just wants to see the outside world. He wants to go outside again. He doesn’t want to get beaten and have his life threatened an inch of his life. But, again, he doesn’t want to actually leave.

So when he sees Sangwoo sitting there, he doesn’t...do anything. It’s like his instinct is to stay where Sangwoo is. Even in the face of being outside, the first thing he does is appeal to Sangwoo, THEN to crawl away begging for help when he realizes that this will be his last time being able to go outside.

But again, first instinct was to beg for Sangwoo’s forgiveness. In that triad of instincts, Bum’s is sexual first, social second, with fkkn self-preservation as his blind oh my god.

10. Uh wait

Is Sangwoo even singing? Or is he just listening to music right now?? I’d say more on this, but there’ll be a LOT to unpack in the next chapter, so I’ll just end it here.

The one where anon fumes in rage for the second half of the chapter

After chapter 143, I never thought I would read this looking for some lightheartedness.

I just found out I have a tag on your blog and I screamed to my fiancée happily about it. Once he made sure I wasn’t going into early labor, he told me to stop being a fucking weeb. He doesn’t understand I just made it! This is awesome!

On to the review then, the title does not bode well given the story’s content.

I hope the read more trick works.

He looks over to where she’s pointing, and sure enough there seemed to be a family of squirrels resting on a branch parallel to their window.

Squirrels mean preparation and resourcefulness. I see the symbolism. ;P

“You look like you’re happy,” She murmurs. “What’s the occasion?”

He hasn’t seen her look this happy in a long time.

Just how bad were the last 5 months if a simple smile and flush is something he hasn’t seen in a long time? Bitch, your relationship hasn’t reached the 6 months mark yet!

Why not put her in Cochlea with Hinami? At least she will help her with the baby when your ass is dead and gone. The fact that these thoughts are even occurring to him is scary since he can do it if he wants and Touka would be helpless to stop him

He looks around the space of the living room and can hardly recognize the change from a few months ago when he got the place.

What had happened?

A woman’s touch.

It felt like home. God, he wanted to laugh at how struck he was by all of this. Would it even matter when he went through with his plans? His child would grow up without him and Touka

I don’t know if this is intentional or not but it’s an odd choice of phrase “let her pick” as if he is controlling every aspect of her life. Oh fuck, he kinda is, isn’t he?

No, it didn’t. She likes to pretend most of the times. The last three months had been nothing but a happy dream. Ken isn’t the same anymore, even if he pretended to be meek and gentle with her now, that isn’t him at all. This was him. She just had to accept it.

This just made me depressed. Why does it have to be like this?

He tests her blood and the urine, not waiting for any lab work, knowing that Sasaki would not take that well, he does it himself.

(Well, Touka is doing that but I mean that metaphorically you line-cutting bastard)

just like the ones that make her eyes blank and roll behind her lids.

That’s probably because you shouldn’t be lying flat on your back once you enter the second trimester. The good doctor would have told you that if your boyfriend didn’t terrify the fuck out of him.

The sight of her completely tired and sated because of him, sends a thrill up his spine.

I hate to say this but same, Kaneki, same.

The baby seems to kick him right on his cheek as Ken leans in to nuzzle her belly. As if to tell his father that he was being ridiculous.

At least now we know both Ken and Touka have a recessive gene for common sense since the baby seems to have more of it than they do.

“I hope – that you’re like your mama. I hope I can make you both happy and proud.”

look over the email he had drafted to his good friend, another Associate Class investigator.

But why didn’t the doctor contact his investigator friend when Ken first threatened him though? His terror means they met before but he needed a dislocated shoulder to ask for his friend’s help?

He would look over the contents in his car and send the email.

What is in his car? Why is it important to check before the email? Does this have anything to do with Kanou’s experiments?

He’s too busy shoving his files inside his briefcase to notice the glint of metal glass frames and a fringe of dark hair.

This is such a well-written line, thrilling.

A smile comes across her lips as she thinks about that.

You’re keeping your expectations pretty low if that is what makes you smile.

Guess who is coming home to a vase thrown at their face? I want Touka to pack her stuff and call Nishiki to come pick her up! Put her stuff in the car and wait to punch Ken in the face then leave. Does he think some baby clothes and cushions will make her ignore her baby sister being thrown in jail? Fuck no, you got a big storm coming, Kaneki.

SO MUCH HYPE FOR NEXT CHAPTER!

By the way, I started writing a review for Aphrodisia but my fiancée heard “impregnation kink” and decided to join me in reading and we uh, got distracted. Future hubby is now a huge fan of yours though despite not knowing anything about the manga besides chapter 125. He says he related a lot to Kaneki in the second chapter (big surprise, huh?) despite not being a king or having any murder tentacles sprouting from his back so great job on that one.

Dexter was one of the most unique shows you could find. Featuring a serial killer who killed other serial killers, the show’s format generally followed a season-by-season template where a new opponent would antagonize Dexter. The formula ensured every season felt like something new was being offered, meaning fans wouldn’t get bored.

This also meant that plot threads unresolved from earlier seasons would carry on forward, with the hope they would be resolved in the series finale. It didn’t work out this way, though, as the finale was maligned by viewers to be unsatisfactory, leaving these 10 storylines still unresolved at present.

10 Debra Being In Love With Dexter

Despite being a show about a guy who killed people and chopped them up, the most uncomfortable part of Dexter was the storyline where his sister Debra fell in love with him. Even though they were adoptive siblings, they had acknowledged each other as siblings all through their lives, making this a very unsettling plot.

It seems as if the writers realized just how disturbing the fanbase found this angle, as it was done away with entirely. It had started out in Season 6, but after Debra kept quiet when she found out Dexter was a killer, the following seasons had nothing to do with her feelings for Dexter; even after they reconciled, Debra somehow went back to being his sister and not bringing up her former love.

9 Dexter's Stepchildren

Nobody missed of Aster, who was thoroughly unlikeable and a brat whom we had to put up with because she was Rita’s daughter. Cody was a much nicer character, and it was a shame we had to say goodbye to him.

This goodbye somehow turned into a permanent one, as Aster and Cody were only seen one more time. Dexter had confessed to himself he had loved those kids as his own, but they weren’t brought up at all when he went out in the ocean to kill himself. By the show’s end, we don’t know what happened to them or if they are aware Dexter is missing.

8 Dexter's Guilt At Killing Innocents

On more than a couple of occasions, Dexter was guilty of going against his code and killing those who weren’t killers themselves. The code of Harry was meant to keep Dexter as a “good guy,” but if Dexter broke it, that didn’t make him any different.

However, Dexter would always be shown to feel guilty when he realized what he’d done, but then overlook this very easily the next episode. In Season 5, he killed a guy called Rankin purely because he was upset at Rita’s death; bizarrely enough, the Rankin kill was never mentioned or touched upon ever again after that one moment.

7 The Evolution Of Dexter's Killing Methods

This might as well could be attributed to the trope called “Early Installment Weirdness”, where characters seem out of line with how they appear to be later in the series when characterization kicks in. Regardless, there’s no chronological explanation to why Dexter had this particular kill play out differently.

In the pilot episode, Dexter captured a killer, but pinned him to the wall and physically showed him his victims; later episodes (and chronologically earlier ones) had him strap his target to a table and show them their victims’ pictures. This then doesn’t explain why Dexter suddenly changed his style only to go back to his previous one.

6 Laguerta's Blatant Crush On Dexter

There was no explanation ever given to just how inappropriate Laguerta was in earlier episodes of Dexter, when she would throw herself at him. Laguerta’s crush on Dexter was so apparent, that scenes involving the two were uncomfortable to watch as she would brazenly flirt with him.

Starting from the latter half of the first season, this aspect of Laguerta’s personality was dropped altogether, and she only treated Dexter as a colleague. Season 7 would have Laguerta implicate Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher, and she seemed to have completely forgotten she once couldn’t contain herself around him.

5 Debra's Guilt

Debra spiraled into depression after taking Laguerta’s life to spare Dexter from being apprehended by the authorities. This led to her resigning from the force and becoming estranged from others.

Once Debra confronted Dexter over how she felt she had become a murderer because of him, this part of Debra’s story was dropped. In actuality, it shouldn’t matter if she and Dexter were on good terms or not, because the fact of the matter was that she still did kill an innocent person; however, Debra didn’t seem bothered by this by the second half of Season 8.

4 Lumen's Total Disappearance From Dexter's Life

Season 5 had focused on Dexter helping Lumen gain her revenge on the men who had tortured her. This then blossomed into love on Dexter’s part, who started seeing a future with her, one where he could be himself around her because she was aware of his Dark Passenger.

Unfortunately, Lumen decided she didn’t want to kill anymore and left him. This doesn’t explain as to how Dexter got over her so easily. He was clearly very much in love with her at the end of Season 5 but didn’t even think of her starting from Season 6 (except once). As far as the show is concerned, Lumen simply vanished like she never existed.

3 Dexter Letting Go Of His Dark Passenger

In Season 7, Dexter fell in love with Hannah, whose father came into town to abuse her into giving him her savings so he could mooch off her. Too bad the old man didn’t know Dexter was a killer, as he found himself murdered by his hand.

Dexter knew this went against his code, but had become enlightened that there was no actual Dark Passenger within him; he simply wanted to kill people. So, he killed Lumen’s father and felt liberated. After this, though, Dexter went back to following his code and once more attributed to his uncontrollable need to kill rather than him just wanting to do it.

2 Hannah And Harrison

Dexter forewent his initial plan of joining Hannah and Harrison in Argentina and disappeared, leaving his son in Hannah’s care. However, that’s not how the system works, and Hannah isn’t Harrison’s legal guardian.

Last we saw of them, Hannah came to terms with being Harrison’s new mother, but that really can’t work because they had no life based in Argentina and Harrison would be considered as abducted by her in the US. Plus, we have no clue where Hannah took Harrison in the end, or if the kid knows his father is missing.

1 What Became Of Dexter

The series finale was largely negatively received because it opened more questions than it answered and defied logic at various places. The biggest criticism was the perpetual cliffhanger Dexter got, where it was left ambiguous what he was supposed to do now.

After becoming a lumberjack, Dexter was shown to be in isolation and filled with sadness. This doesn’t explain what he would do about his killing problem. He had confessed he didn’t want to kill anymore only because he had Hannah; now that he didn’t, shouldn’t he want to kill again? It’s too bad we have no idea what became of him.

An idea for Persona 6

There are three things that helped me imagine this story and scenario for a Persona game. First, the mascots from the latest main Persona games, the second being Futaba’s palace in Persona 5, and lastly the idea of what Morgana truly is (not saying anything because spoilers). I will be putting my ideas under the cut since it will be VERY long and there will be spoilers for certain Persona games, but to summarize things, it’s a game where you stop people’s suicides in real life by restoring their hope in an alternate world. Now let me try to explain.

Also, TW for suicide

I really liked Futaba’s palace in P5 in how she thought of her home as a tomb, and that she was going to die there (likely by her own hands), and how the goal was to basically cure her depression/anxiety that was caused by other forces. I really liked that and was kinda disappointed that it wasn’t really used again later. So I combined this with P4′s idea of saving people from the TV world and created this. So here we go.

INTRODUCTION

You play as an introverted protagonist in the humble little (fictional) town of Kamonya. The protagonist Thae (pronounced similar to “stay”), is what others would call “The strange, quiet kid” in school. They don’t talk much to others because they would prefer to keep to themselves and not set themselves up for hurt. They believe that if they make any friends, they will lose them in some way and suffer afterwards, so they turn themself away from many, including their own family. However, Thae is an average student who gets decent grades and never acts out of line. Despite this, Thae constantly gets called by others “a weirdo” or “a serial killer in the making.” This could set up the idea of a fresh state for social links.

The town Thae lives in is a relatively peaceful place. Lots of things are in a convenient walking distance, from the movie theater to the grocery store, and many people in town know each other by name. Next to the town is a city where most of the townspeople go for work; the (also fictional) city of Katoro. The residents of Kamonya are all relaxed and friendly, while many in Katoro are stressed and antisocial due to their jobs. The residents in Kamonya are a breath of fresh air to the people of Katoro, and many times those in the city go to the quiet town to calm down. However, the stress of Katoro jobs does get under the skin of those in Kamonya, such people like Thae’s parents. This would set up the setting for certain things, like movie theaters and libraries in Kamonya for social stats, and weapon/armor shops in Katoro for battle.

In the heart of Kamonya is the Well of Prosperity, which has been around ever since the town was founded. Folk tales say that those who drank from the well were destined to always live peaceful lives, but many (including Thae and their family) did not believe the tales. Throughout Kamonya it is a tradition that when a baby is born, their first drink is from the well to ensure that they live a peaceful life. But one day the well begins to dry; the water level begins to drop drastically day by day. The well was always filled to the top no matter how many drank from it, so many residents of Kamonya worried that this was a bad omen for things to come. Thae didn’t believe this either, since they only believed that the Well of Prosperity was only a well.

Then Thae’s father commits suicide while at work one day. Many residents of Kamonya were devastated, assuming that he was pushed past his limit of stress; Thae’s mother had it worst. Despite being constantly pushed to the breaking point at her job in Katoro, she always brightened up everyone’s day with a smile. After her husband died, she became much like her child and shut herself away in her house. Thae began to take care of their mother, as some days she refused to even eat a single bite of food or get out of bed. Thae did not grieve as much as their mother, but still grieved all the same. But Thae had a feeling that something bigger was going on, as their father’s death was strange to them. At work he was doing the usual business, then stopped, got up, and stepped out of a high story window.

Then one day, Thae decides that it’s finally time to figure out what was going on. Kamonya is beginning to become bleak, their father’s suicide was unnatural and the well had completely dried after all of the years it had been filled! Thae believes that all of these must be connected somehow, and then one night decides to investigate the well. They grab a rope to climb down the well with, their practice sais (which they learn how to use as a hobby) and their crystal necklace; a gift from their father. They use rope to lower themself down to the depths, thinking that there might be something at the bottom that can explain everything. At the bottom, Thae discovers an entirely new world. It is filled with hundreds of bizarre creatures across a clear, wide open plain neighbored by a wide, vast ocean. They all seem outlandish, but peaceful and harmless (similar to previous Persona mascots).

But as Thae arrives, they’re all being attacked. Monsters are caging up the creatures and dragging them down into the water. As Thae arrives, it seems like it is already too late. All of the creatures are gone except for two. One is caged up and is being dragged into the water while the other is trying to save its friend. Vowing that they’ll let nobody else suffer, Thae rushes in to help, which causes the second creature to glow with a blue light along with their crystal necklace. The two create a contract together and fight the monster, with Thae commanding the creature as if it were their own, but are still no match for it. The rest of the creatures are dragged under and Thae is knocked out.

When Thae wakes, the creature from earlier is there trying to help them recover. Afterwards, the creature explains that the world Thae is in is The World of Hope: a place where the inhabitants within are physical embodiments of the hope of the people in the real world. The creature Thae had met and created a contract with is their Persona of Hope, but Thae’s persona was not strong because their hope for the world and its future was lingering. Recently the ocean next to them, the Sea of Souls, had become corrupt, and monsters from down below had taken everyone else’s hope. Then, Thae discovers that their father’s hope had been dragged under weeks before his death, confirming that these happenings were linked.

So teaming up with their Persona, Thae ventures into the depths of the sea of souls to save their home and discover why the sea had became corrupt.

MAIN GAME

As said earlier, this game would be about saving people from committing suicide in the real world. Like many other Persona titles, one half of the game would be everyday school life. Going to school, shopping for items, talking to people, etc. With Thae’s vow to stop people’s suffering, they are now willing to converse with others and try to help them with their problems, allowing Thae to obtain social links for special abilities both in the depths and in their world. It’s all good, nothing much changes on that part.

Down in the depths however, it’s a whole other ballgame. Your goal is to save as many people as you can by bringing their hope back to the surface and prevent them from drowning in despair. This would be akin to P5′s Mementos, as to save more people you need to go deeper into the depths. There would be five levels of depth, which would each represent the five stages of grief (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance). Each level of depth would be huge, and in order to purify the sea once again you have to defeat a Persona of despair, which holds captive the hope of somebody important in Thae’s life (The first boss holding their mother captive). But each level wouldn’t be fully purified until all of the Personas of Hope from that depth are brought back to the surface, and each level gets tougher as it goes down. Along with that, you have one year to save as much hope as you can. You don’t HAVE to purify every depth, but it will have an affect on the ending.

You also have a limited amount of time to complete each depth. Thae’s Persona of Hope is not that strong since they barely had any more hope left for their future. For each depth level, somebody close to Thae will be at risk, such as a friend or family member. If you do not complete the depth in a given amount of time, the person close to Thae will commit suicide, leading Thae to lose their hope as well and do the same soon after.

The process of gaining multiple Personas is still there, as is the Velvet room. (Igor is there for real this time don’t worry) I’m not sure what the form the Velvet Room would be for Thae, but I’d imagine it as some sort of place where Thae is alone in a place where they can only watch events on the outside unfold. The process of fusing Personas is also still there as well.

Now as for party members, this is where things get interesting. Aside from Thae, there are no human party members that can join Thae in the depths. The only other party members that join Thae are Personas of Hope that you save from bosses. The reason only these Personas can only be party members because they hold a strong hope for the future and/or are close in Thae’s new life. So in a way, Thae is the mascot in their team, since they’re the only human in the party of mascots. Party members get new abilities (in battle and out) if you hang out with their human counterparts in the real world and help with their problems. And yes you can also romance the social links as well, but cheating on them can prove difficult for the final boss.

THE FINALE

Once Thae reaches the depths and saves as many Personas of Hope as they can, the party discovers that there is indeed a larger being at play in the suicides and corruption of the Sea of Souls. It is the ultimate Persona of Despair (not sure what it would be right now). They claim that the reasoning behind corrupting the Sea of Souls and dragging the Personas of Hope down under is to bring the people of reality to their senses and see the truth of the world around them. Thae and the other Personas of Hope say that there is still good in the world and then they fight, getting royally whooped in the process. The Ultimate Persona of Despair (UPoD) also tells that draining the well was to add on to the people’s despair, making them realize that a good future cannot simply be given and confirmed from birth, which added onto the despair.

Meanwhile all of the Social Links/Confidants Thae has made discovers the other world and rushes to join with them in their fight when they’re down. The human counterparts of the party members all form contracts with their Personas of Hope and all team up with Thae to bring down the UPoD. In the end they all succeed and the Sea of Souls is completely purified. But any hope that was not saved is gone, along with their human counterpart.

Now here is where the multiple endings come in. When the UPoD is defeated, Thae’s persona tells them that the well will soon fill once again and their worlds will be separated for good. Whether or not you were able to save enough Personas of Hope will determine the outcome. If you barely rescue anybody and make it to the final boss all by yourself, Thae will stay in the World of Hope so they can try and prevent anything similar to this from happening ever again, and becomes a Persona themself. If you manage to save the strangers in the town and not those close to you, Thae will return to the real world but remain as the person they began as. The only way to obtain the best ending is to save all of the Personas of Hope; there, Thae will live happy with the friends they’ve made and keep their vow of preventing the suffering of others. The only way for Thae to live happy in the end is if they kept their vow from the beginning.

ADDITIONAL THINGS

-The way Thae summons their Personas are through a necklace that they wear. It’s a small white crystal connected by a black string. To summon a Persona, they grasp the crystal in their hand then crush it to summon the Persona. Once the Persona retreats back into the crystal, it reforms itself.

-Similar to P5, sometimes the player might have to save a certain person to advance a confidant/social link. However, if the person in question is already saved beforehand, the story changes slightly to make up for it, allowing the player to keep bonding with their friend.

-During the beginning when Thae’s mother is still depressed, their house will be bleak. But as Thae rescues more and more people from the corrupted Sea of Souls, the house will continue to grow brighter and livelier. This would symbolize how Thae letting people into their life and saving others from suffering is improving their own life!

-The Personas of Hope that can join your party are not limited to only spells. They all act like party members from previous Persona games and can use regular weapons too. During the final battle when the people create contracts with their respective Personas of Hope, they can each use the weapons that their Persona was using; the only difference being that the humans are much stronger.

-The more Personas of Hope you save from the depths and the more time you spend with your social links/confidants, the more lively the World of Hope will become, allowing you to use special services in the World of Hope such as special item shops or a place to rest and recover both HP and SP.

-Even though it is possible to beat an entire depth level in one session, you would have to go back to the real world afterwards since you faced a tough boss, story progression and for your own health. But you can’t go down to a deeper depth until Thae gets a reason to, such as somebody important to them needing saving.

-The main color would be purple and the music genre would be electro-swing.

And so concludes my thoughts for a Persona 6 concept! It started off simple but certainly grew bigger the more I thought about it! I hope you enjoyed reading my concept! (also let me know if I should send this to Atlus).

Monday are day of rest 2.0 (Sort of)

I rose once more to the sticky heat of my tent, the first bead of sweat already on my brow. I opened the flaps of the tent and like a blind mole tried to worm myself out to the breeze. It was a still morning so I resolved that I'd have to get up and out of the sweatbox. This was when I first felt the pangs of the stiffness from mixing concrete for the past 6 days. I rose and stretched a little, walked over to the kitchen. I then did something I'd not done before, I turned on my mobile data for 5 seconds, just enough time for whatsapp messages to come through to me but nothing else. 20 messages from 5 different chats. The first that came to my attention were the 13 from Beth. It wasn't good news. For people that don't know, i met Beth in Calais but a week or so before we met she went on a date with a Canadian fella him and they kept in touch. From what Beth told me about the lad he was a total dreamboat, charming, handsome and caring. She flew out to Canada to go travelling around Canada in his van. Wildly romantic and beautiful as the idea seemed not all went as planned. The first few days were great I'm told, I recieved whatsapp messages saying how nice a time she was having. Fantastic, I thought she took the risk and it paid off. Then things took a turn for the worse, the fella told Beth that he feared she was falling in love with him and that he didn't want to hurt her. The next day he abandoned her in a parking lot then 15 minutes later drove back, picked her up and acted as though nothing had happened. Having received these messages I dashed to my tent to pick up the essentials (wallet and suncream) and as though I were in a Hugh Grant film I grabbed a ridiculous looking bike completely unsuitable for the terrain (a pink number with no suspension that was too large for my stubby legs) and I set off down a bumpy dirt track. Feeling extremely unsafe I peddled the 3 km to Cesme, got to the cafe so I could use the WiFi and call Beth. In a flashback to 2 weeks prior, the cafe was locked so I just sat outside with weaker wifi but wifi nonetheless. I checked my phone and saw that Beth had texted 10 minutes earlier to say she was going to sleep. I hadn't thought about the time difference. Bugger. I sat there on my phone replying to other people's messages and reading the news. Resting and wasting my already low charge on my phone before heading back to the village, 20 minutes or so later Beth replied saying she couldn't sleep. Turn up for the books I thought to myself, I would have felt almost as silly as Beth if I'd cycled down for nothing. We texted for a short while and insulted the Canadian fella who apparently wasn't quite over his ex. Beth was undoubtedly naive to fly to Canada to see go on holiday with a man she had met once in her life. There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity and i think one can only really be judged by the outcome. I spent the weeks preceding it her trip teasing her that he might be a serial killer. Fortunately not a serial killer just weak pillock that thought it might be better to leave a girl in a parking lot in the middle of nowhere whilst she was in a foreign country than tell her his feelings. We’ve all been in those awkward situations where you've got to tell someone something they don't want to hear. I'm very guilty at avoiding awkward topics for as long as possible. Some people (reality TV stars) relish the prospect of confrontation but the Canadian fella and I are alike in the fact we avoid it at pretty much all costs. That being said I would like to think that I might draw the line at allowing a girl to fly across the Atlantic for me. We established that perhaps in future you should know a guy a little more than a day before flying halfway across the world to meet him we began to laugh at the ridiculousness of the situation. That was until the Samsung sign came up on my phone indicating that would be where our conversation would end. Phone dead I straddled my majestic pink bike a cycled bravely through the most confusing traffic light roundabout I've ever come across. I got back to The Village my baby blue shirt closer to navy under the armpits and the back. I had breakfast and explained where I'd been and why to everyone at the village. We did a little work measuring out where to put the next structure we were to start on, the volunteer house. I'm very keen to start this because I'm confident that once it's built I can take up permanent residence in it, closing down the sweat box tent. We discussed a large problem we've been discussing for almost a week now without finding a resolution. The dilemma we have is complex and, as is the way with many complex problems there is no obvious perfect solution. We need to build a stone wall to complete the children's room in the education centre. This would be fine were there not an 8 foot hole where the corner for the wall should go. ‘Why is there a hole?’ I here you ask. The plan for the education centre wasn't entirely clear or certain at the time so Imece adopted James Bond’s policy of shoot first, only it was digging not shooting. In fact a body might be a lot simpler a problem to rectify than this whacking great hole in the way. The hole will be used as a tank less septic tank. The waste water from the toilets and the kitchen will go into it and apparently it won't need to be emptied for 6 months to a year. Not a chance. Problem 1. We don't feel confident building a structure to support a stone wall over a great big hole Problem 2. It's going to smell horrendous and it is in the centre of activity. Ali promises that if we cover it well enough it's not going to smell. I don't believe it. It just so happens that we have a drainage expert volunteering with us this week and she says it can't be done. I'm a proponent of the plan of digging a new hole and filling the current one in with the soil we gain from that. All of this costs money that we don't have. A problem without an easy solution. After going back and forth about this issue we had lunch having made no progress. We did decide however to go to a nearby beach in the afternoon which had been used regularly by refugees attempting to swim to chios (5.5 km away). It wasn't quite what I was expecting but there were many dinghies washed up on the rocks. It was strange to think, whilst looking out across a beautiful coastline to Chios that people had died attempting to make the crossing. We cleaned up the beach. Cleaning beaches is a topic I have mixed feelings for. I feel that in order to cause any real difference the magnitude of people taking part must be incredibly large and people must take littering more seriously to prevent the issue occurring again. This being said I do believe that a bin liner full less of rubbish on the beach is a good thing and that if I am to expect others to do it I must first do it myself. We spent hours cutting dinghies away from the rocks and as we were losing the light and feeling rather tired we walked back in towards Cesme. I sat in the cafe writing this and will now head for a beer on my day off. If you're to take two things from this post take these two, don't litter on beaches and employ a Trumpian extreme vetting policy before buying your ticket to Canada.

Dragon Quest: Where to Start

Introduction

The “where do i start” question is asked quite frequently on /r/dragonquest and the main FB fangroup, so i assumed i’d make my own list.

I’m gonna compile each game that has been released outside of Japan into this post and give their most important features of each version available -at least- in English so anyone can see the differences and choose according to their needs or preferences.

Note 1: To mark in which languages is available each release, i’m gonna put these next to its platform: (E) = English; (F) = French; (G) = German; (I) = Italian; (S) = Spanish. “EFIGS” may only apply to the EU version, though.

Note 2: Some things might not be 100% accurate, I’m just a slime, sluurp 🙇🏻🙏.

Note 3: Games with only one version available in English (or Multi-5) will get this message in the recommendation: “There’s only a version.”. Games in which you can choose the gender of the main characters will include this sentence in its info: “In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character.”.

Note 4: Reminder about the Roman numerals (just in case): I = 1, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4, V = 5 , VI = 6, VII = 7, VIII = 8, IX = 9, X=10 and XI = 11.

Note 5: The post-2006 releases use lots of puns, jokes, and accents. It’s a characteristic of the series, as are the title alliterations (ie: Chapters of the Chosen, Luminaries of the Legendary Line, etc), the black and white menus, or the classic main theme, etc. Most of the post-2010 releases use visible encounters as well. As for now, there seems to be no turning back.

I’ll be skipping games that require fan-translation (I only mention them, but I highly prefer officially released titles).

What is Dragon Quest?

Dragon Quest is a JRPG franchise developed by Enix (now Square Enix). The series is very traditional, in various aspects, the most notorious being the turn-based encounters and the encouragement to explore every corner. The main staff behind the series is: Yuji Horii (Scenario), Akira Toriyama (Art) and Koichi Sugiyama (Music). DQ first started 31 years ago in Japan, in May of 1986. A few years later, in 1989, it was first released in North America, but due to copyright issues with “Dungeons & Dragons”, Enix had to change the name to “Dragon Warrior”. After the Square Enix merger in 2003, they could finally solve the naming issue and, starting with the eighth entry in the main series, in 2005, DQ was finally getting called “Dragon Quest” in North America. One year later, in 2006, the series was introduced in Europe with that same game, Dragon Quest VIII (prior to that, only one spinoff had came to Europe). Since then, many remakes, re-releases, and spinoffs came to the West, even with some years of silence between 2011 and 2014. In 2017 we’re getting Dragon Quest VIII for 3DS (in January) and Dragon Quest Heroes II for PS4 and Steam (in April). ---

It should be noted DQ is a very special JRPG series, and most of its narrative comes from NPCs or books. This series really encourages the player to explore everything and to talk to everyone. That might be the only way to get clues of what to do next. Aside from that, in the games that it’s available, the Party Chat feature is also one of the most reliable features you’ll find in these games. Party chat lets your party members give you their opinions and comment on lots of different things that happen in the game -from the reaction they get after talking to a NPC, to their reaction after an important cutscene-, and they might also give you tips and remind you of what you have to do next. Aside from that, it’s a great tool to see the personalities of your characters. That said, do not come to this series expecting lots of pre-rendered cutscenes and lots of flashy action, this series is not about that (there is some, of course, but not as many as in other JRPGs). As i said a bit earlier, DQ is very special for other things too. The combat is always turn-based in the main series (except in the MMO) and the dialogue is usually full of puns and jokes. Unlike many other series, almost all the games have the same quality and its a highly consistent series, due to the main creators always being the same (Mr Yuji Horii, Mr Koichi Sugiyama and Mr Akira Toriyama). What you need to know about the other works of these three gentlemen: Horii created one of the games that inspired Hideo Kojima that videogames could offer interesting stories (”The Portopia Serial Murder Incident”); Sugiyama has been composed many classic music and worked on various 70s Japanese tv shows such as “The Return for Ultraman”; and AKira Toriyama is a worldwide known manga artist, mainly for his two masterpieces: Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball.

NOTE: Okay, let me be clear, in this block i’ll talk about what are the best entry points IN MY OPINION, as the title clearly say.

To start playing the series, the best three entry points in the main series are IV (4) , VIII (8) and XI (11). The first one can be played in English on NES and Mobile and in Multi-5/EFIGS on DS. The second one can be played in English and French on Mobile and EFIGS on PS2 and 3DS. The third one will be available on PS4 and PC in Multi-5 later this year; sometime in the future also on Switch.

- IV is divided in chapters and features a highly likeable cast -specifically a certain Tsarevna. Each chapter is unique and follows a specific set of characters, who will later meet in the fifth and longest chapter. This story is quite tragic and is best enjoyed on the remakes of the game, since these remakes include a sixth chapter that gives an insight in the motives that drove the villain to do what he did. If you want to play in English and get its best version to date, the mobile (iOS/Android) version is the one. If you want to play using physical buttons or in French, German, Spanish or Italian, the (EU) DS release is for you. The DS/Mobile remakes use lots of puns and accents (the NES version doesn’t), and that can be bothersome until you get used to it, but it’s worth it (and I personally love it, except in the first chapter while playing in English. I didn’t have any issue while playing in Spanish). This is the one that gave me an obsession made me a DQ fan.

- VIII on the other hand, focuses a lot more on a major plot and its characters. Due to that, it is the easiest DQ to jump in if you already like other JRPG series. Given its artstyle and big scale of its world, it gives a great sense of adventure (its actually not that big, but it feels huge). As IV, VIII’s characters are regarded as some of the best in the whole series, specially Yangus and Trode. As in IV, the remake gives us some more information about the villain and his motives. If you value content and quality of life improvements over looks, the 3DS version is the definitive version. Otherwise, if you prefer prettier graphics, go for the PS2 version. The 3DS version is what i consider its best version to date, and its the easiest to find nowadays, besides the Mobile port.

- XI is an interesting title because despite being full of throwbacks and -maybe- connections to the older games, it introduces many quality-of-life improvements into the usual mechanics of the series. On top of that, has a killer soundtrack, composed with brand new songs (which some will say that are weaker) and a whole lot of classic songs from all the main games. And to round up the package, it also has gorgeous graphics. The cast is likeable, the story is interesting, the gag moments are nice, the sad moments are touching (i personally thought Horii couldn’t outdo himself after V, but boy i was wrong). It has a lot to like, and little to dislike. The real shame about this game is that we -apparently- won’t be getting the 3DS version.

Aside from these three games, the other main titles might be a good point to start too, but some might have give some trouble, for example:

I and II: (Terribly) Outdated. II is also the hardest game in the whole series, and its NES version is quite unbalanced at the final parts of the game.The devs even admitted in an interview that they couldn’t balance it properly because they couldn’t delay the game.

III and VII: These are better enjoyed if you have played some of the previous games, for example III is better enjoyed with knowledge of I and II (of their story, i mean), and VII with knowledge of what to expect from the game (how DQ’s narrative usually works, how the battles work, etc) as well as knowing a bit about VI’s mechanics.

V: Probably the top of the series, but I feel it’s not as DQ-newbie-friendly as IV and VIII. Still a solid game.

VI: Love it or hate it experience.

IX: It’s quite different from the other games since it focuses a lot more on character customization (there are no pre-made characters, besides some that are acquired in some postgame DLC quests), so it might give a wrong idea of what the series is like. It is a lovely game, though.

Other notes:

III, VI, VII and IX (and X, but that’s Japan-only for now) use class systems.

Outside the main series, in my opinion, the best entry points might also be:

- Dragon Quest Monsters 1 and 2 (better known as Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 and 2). Charming monster collecting games. The first one features Terry, originally from DQVI, on his quest to win the Starry Night Tournament, while the second one features two original characters (Tara & Coby) on a quest to save their new island. DQM2/DWM2 comes in two versions. In one you play as Tara and in the other as Coby. Might be a bit outdated, but they’re quite fun games. I feel like they’re better than the other monster-catching games of that era, at least technically.

- Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2. The most recent Monsters game we got. Has a quite deep synthesis system and it’s quite intuitive. Also has a large amount of beasts. Could feel a bit clunky and slow to play nowadays, though.

- Dragon Quest Builders. Easy to play and with really charming aspects. Has a long story and huge replay value, as each time the player can build their base differently. It has been called “the Minecraft for those who don’t like Minecraft”, due to it being more guided that the mentioned game. It has some connections to the first three games in the series, but can be enjoyed without previous knowledge of the series. If you had to choose a DQ spinoff, choose this one. Don’t think of it as a “Minecraft with DQ skins”. There’s a Minecraft mod for that, this is quite different.

Games & Releases: Versions that have been released in the West

In this huge block, we’re gonna look at each game, its western releases (trying to cover both NA-only and NA/EU/AUS releases), the features each re-release (if any) has in comparison to the first English/Western version, and my recommendations for each game.

Dragon Quest I

Info: Old JRPG with very simple mechanics. It is the first console JRPG out there (almost a year and a half earlier than Final Fantasy 1!). The story is quite simple (save the princess and defeat the bad guy) and the gameplay is very bare bones, but still an enjoyable game. It’s also really short, can be beaten in about 6 hours if you’re fast.

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest I · II (SFC), 1993; Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection (Wii), 2011. [There is a fantranslation for the SFC remake.]

- Dragon Warrior for NES (E)

- Dragon Warrior 1 · 2 for GBC (E)

- Dragon Quest I for iOS and Android (E)

Brighter, more colorful world, but poorly upscaled graphics. (Because its a port of an old mobile port they did in the mid 2000s, but fitted into a way higher screen)

My recommendation: “Dragon Quest I” for iOS and Android (E). Why?: It’s simply the best version: better graphics, music, translation and balancing (meaning less grinding).

The Mobile port is the only version available in Europe, btw.

Dragon Quest II

Info: Second game in the series. Adds extra two party members there can be various monsters on battle, there’s also a ship and a waaaay bigger world (the world of DQ1 is just a small part of the one in DQ2). That said, it is worth noting the original version of this game was quite rushed and the end-game areas are quite unbalanced. The story is quite simple too: An evil mage named Hargon plans on destroying the world and starts by attacking the kingdom of Moonbrooke. The princes of Midenhall and Cannock reunite with their lost cousin from Moonbrooke to stop Hargon.

Dragon Quest III

Info: First DQ game to feature a class system, which was supported by a personality system thus making almost every character unique. This game also features some big plot twists and even larger areas to explore. DQ3 also ends the Erdrick/Loto trilogy. The story follows the offspring of a great hero (Ortega) and their quest to finish what their disappeared father started: to defeat the evil Baramos. In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character. (Note: And the gender of any character you create.)

Versions and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest III (SFC), 1996; Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Collection (Wii), 2011. [There is a fantranslation for the SFC remake.]

- Dragon Warrior III for NES (E)

My recommendation: This is a hard choice, but it is between “Dragon Warrior 3” for GBC (E) and “Dragon Quest III Seeds of Salvation” for iOS and Android (E). Why?: The GBC version has a lot more content, but the Smartphone version has a newer DQ-style translation and better graphics. Many will say the SFC remake is better, but i love monster medals and the official translations 🤷‍♀️

The Mobile port is the only version available in Europe, btw.

Note about the Erdrick Trilogy (I - III): This trilogy is better enjoyed when played in order (DQ -> DQII -> DQIII).

Dragon Quest IV

Info: First game of the Zenithian trilogy (which is loosely connected). First -and only- DQ game to be told in chapters so far. Each one follows different people, and in the fifth, they all meet to fulfill their roles al the chosen ones. Here, instead of having generic characters with classes, we have set (and very charismatic) characters who learn a specific sets of spells and skills. In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character.

The overall story focuses on a demon who loves a lovely elf and hates human for how they treat elves, monsters and dwarves. The party must stop this demon, Psaro, from awakening the demon lord and destroying the world.

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest IV (PS1), 2001.

- Dragon Warrior IV for NES (E)

- Dragon Quest IV: (The) Chapters of the Chosen for DS (EFIGS)

New DQ translation.

No party-chat. (It was added in the Japanese remake, and was mostly translated by the release date, but SQEX decided to not put it for some reason)

- Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen for iOS and Android (E)

My recommendation: Depends, but choose one from the latter two. Why?: If you want to play in French, Spanish, Italian or German, go for the DS release. If you want to enjoy the party chat feature, for for the Smartphone release. The party chat seems pointless but it actually gives a lot of characterization to the party members.

Dragon Quest V

Info: Second game of the Zenithian trilogy. In this particular game, the story follows a young man through his (painful) life: from his childhood to his adulthood. DQ5 was one of the first games ever to let players recruit monsters to join their team (which, some years after its release, and after the success of Pokémon, inspired the birth of “Dragon Quest Monsters”). It also allows choosing a wife (well, it forces the player to choose one, since it is related to the plot): Bianca, the childhood friend; Nera, the sweetheart from a good family; or Debora, the passionate sister of Nera. This game has probably the best story in the whole series.

Versions and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest V (SFC), 1992; Dragon Quest V (PS2), 2004. [There are fantranslations for these two titles.]

- Dragon Quest V: (The) Hand of the Heavenly Bride for DS (EFIGS)

- Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride for iOS and Android (E)

Some slight tweaks.

The two versions of this game we got are quite similar, except some small balancing and changes of MP cost. Both feature DQ-style localization (it’s the same for both versions), a new bride not present in the original SFC release nor PS2 remake (Debora), a few more monsters of newer games (like DQVIII’s Jailcat) and some other tweaks.

The NES version only released in North America, btw.

Dragon Quest VI

Info: Third and last game of the Zenithian trilogy (First, chronologically). In this game the party travels between two worlds: reality and dream world. There are two extra “worlds”: underwater and the dread realm. In this game, there’s a class system quite different from III, since the classes of VI aren’t tied to the character’s level but to the number of battles won, with 8 levels of mastery (8 stars = mastered the class).

The story is about a group of young people who are off to fight the evil demon who rules the dreams and treats the land (Murdaw). But there’s more, the game is about traveling between worlds and solving problems and fighting the Dreadfiends.

Versions and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest VI (SFC), 1995. [There is a fantranslation for this title.]

- Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation / Reverie for DS (EFIGS)

- Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation for iOS and Android (E)

Better balanced and a few tweaks.

The two versions of the game we got are pretty similar, so there’s only these two differences: controls and enhanced balancing (for example, Terry joins with a few more classes mastered). Both feature the same graphic style, the same DQ-style translation and the same music.

My recommendation: Doesn’t matter. Why?: Both are pretty much the same, choose according to your wallet or control preferences. I’d choose DS though, since the mobile port can be buggy in some phones (and due to multi-5 too). The SFC version is objectively better (better atmosphere, much prettier graphics, can recruit monsters like in V), but it doesn’t have an official translation and the fan-translation covers 95% of it (but you can beat the main story, though).

Note about the Zenithian Trilogy (IV - VI): This trilogy, unlike Erdrick’s trilogy, is loosely connected. Only a few elements connect the games, so they can be played as individual experiences. A few details in VI imply the cronological order is different from the release order.

Dragon Quest VII

Info: Longest entry in the series. It is also the only DQ game with time-travel so far. The story is divided in islands, each of which is unlocked after completing a small puzzle made of shards/fragments. This game features the class system from VI, but extended.

The story starts in the only island in the world, but with the help of Prince Kiefer and Maribel, the player unravels the mysteries of an eerie abandoned shrine, which transports them into another island in the past. The party must solve the problems of the islands in the past to save the islands in the present, and learn what happened with the world and how can they fix it.

Versions and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest VII (iOS/Android), 2015.

- Dragon Warrior VII: Warriors of Eden for PS1 (E)

The JP version of the 3DS remake uses orchestral soundtrack, but the Western version doesn’t. It can be restored with a hacked 3DS, apparently. The Western release also added some lag in the menus.

My recommendation: “Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past” for 3DS (EFIGS). Why?: Firstly because of the multi-5 text, but also for the QoL improvements, specifically the faster class mastering and fragment radar.

Btw, the 3DS version is the only one in Europe.

Note: There is a patch for the 3DS that adds the orchestral soundtrack. (You need a CFW on your 3DS.)

Dragon Quest VIII

Info: First fully-3D (non-remake) game of the series. It had various changes: firstly, the story focused on a main plot. Secondly, each character had a few learning paths, which could be followed by allocating Skill Points, earned by leveling up, and that at certain milestones would teach them new skills, spells and passive bonuses. Other changes include the Monster Arena (which plays a bit like the Dragon Quest Monsters arenas), having orchestral music ingame and voice acting (these two things were only present in the western PS2 version), having the alchemy pot and some more innovations.

The story follows a young guard and a bandit, who are helping a cursed king and his daughter to catch the culprit of their curse. They follow him around the world, finding some interesting partners along the way.

There are some small changes made by SQEX Japan so the game would keep the same rating it got on the PS2 years ago (For All Ages). Nothing game changing.

On New 3DS, the C-stick can be used to rotate the camera. (There is no performance improvement on N3DS.)

My recommendation: “Dragon Quest VIII: (The) Journey of the Cursed King” for 3DS (EFIGS). Why?: The improvements, QoL enhancements and new features make it worth it despite it being inferior graphically to its PS2 original release. The music change doesn’t affect you a lot if you do not play using headphones. Also, the “censorship” is irrelevant since Jessica is 17 and the two other scenes don’t change that much anyway. If that’s your main concern, I may suggest you check your priorities, my dude. 🤷‍♂️

Note: There are patches for the 3DS version that give Jessica her PS2 outfits and put the orchestral soundtrack in. (You need a CFW on your 3DS.)

Dragon Quest IX

Info: In some aspects this game is a throwback to Dragon Quest III. The player can customize the party, their aspect and their equipment. It mixes DQIII’s classes and VIII’s skill trees. As VIII, it also has (instant) alchemy. This is the first main DQ game that allows playing with friends (up to 4, in local multiplayer). Unlike almost all the other games (except I and III), there aren’t set characters in this game*. In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character. (Note: And the gender of any character you create). IX has tons of throwbacks and cameos from the other heroes (as Inn Guests and costumes) and villains (as Bosses) from the main series and a character from DQ Swords.

*There ARE some set characters, but to be able to get them you need to have access to the DLC quests (the DS and Wii servers are dead right now, so you need to edit your file or connect with someone who has them unlocked) and have beaten the main story.

The story in this game follows a young celestrian (a guardian angel, basically) in their quest to find out what happened to their realm. They must travel around the world, helping as many people as possible while getting clues of what or who is responsable for the fall of their land.

- Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies for DS (EFIGS)

My recommendation: There is only the one version of this title. Its best enjoyed with friends, and/or if you like roleplaying/creating your own characters.

Dragon Quest XI

Info: Return to the classic formula after the multiplayer-focused IX and X.

The story focuses on a boy, who is the reincarnation of a Hero, who is acused of being “the demon’s child”. He has to escape and unravel the mysteries regarding this “demon’s child / hero’s child” controversy with a cast of great characters.

The most interesting part about this title was how it was made in three different styles: 2D, “chibi” 3D and full-scale 3d. The first one, tries to emulate the graphics of the original DQ6 and the SFC remake of DQ3; the second one tries to go for the aesthetic of DQ9 and the remake of DQ7; and the third one gives us the logical step after DQ8. The first two modes are only present on the Japan-only 3DS version, while the later is present in all the UE4 versions (PS4, PC and probably Switch). As each of them tries to emulate a different era of the series, there are gameplay mechanics that change. For instance, when playing in 2D mode (3DS), the items won’t have an image when looking at the inventory. Meanwhile, they will while playing in 3D (3DS). Or the way boomerang works: in the 3DS version, they hit from left to right, like in previous titles; while on the UE4 versions the player can choose which enemy it should hit first. (Since the 3DS version is staying Japan-only i’ll avoid making more comparisons to it.)

Nobody knows anything about it so far, except it’s confirmed for all regions.

My recommendation: Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age for PS4 or PC. Why?: So far, we’re only getting “one version” on two platforms, so it’s up to the player to decide their platform of choice. I’d personally choose PS4 because the game was designed with a PS4 in mind. If you can read japanese, the 3DS version is also a great option. I personally prefer it to the UE4 version.

And that’s all for the main series.

Dragon Quest X is a MMO for Wii, Wii U, PC, 3DS and Mobile, which will be soon available for PS4 and Switch in Japan. There are no plans for a Western release of this game for now. (There is a western localization campaign, started on October 2016. @imutone recently started a complementary campaign to send physical letters to SQEX. Here’s the latest update on the campaign. Make sure to join it!)

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland

Info: Inspired by DQV’s monster recruitment feature and Pokémon’s success, this was the first attempt to make a Monster-Catching DQ game. It features Terry and Milly (called Milayou in the old DWM translation) from DQVI as the protagonists (Note: Only Terry is playable, Milly is a secondary character).

In this game, you have to travel worlds to get stronger monsters to be able to win in the Starry Night tournament, which grants a wish to its winner, and save your kidnapped sister.

Versions and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Monsters 1 · 2 (PS1), 2002; Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D (3DS), 2012. [There is fantranslation for this remake.]

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Tara’s Adventure / Coby’s Journey

Info: In this sequel, they went the monster catching Pokémon way: two versions with exclusive monsters. Each version offers a protagonist: The young Tara, or her older brother Coby. This game offered monster trade.

In these games, you have to travel between worlds to save your new home, an island, while becoming a better monster master.

Versions and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Monsters 1 · 2 (PS1), 2002; Dragon Quest Monsters 2 (3DS), 2014.

- Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 for GBC (E)

Comes in two packages: Tara’s Adventure and Coby’s Journey. In the first one you play as a girl (Tara) and in the other as a boy (Coby). They’re sibilings.

There was DQM game for GBA, Caravan Heart, which was Japan-only. Quite different from the first two DQM/DWM games, but as DQM1/DWM1, it has a child version of a character of the main series as the protagonist: Kiefer from VII. [There is a fantranslation for this game.]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Info: This is a reboot of the DQM formula. Coming after the Japan-only DQM Caravan Heart that mixed DQVII’s monster hearts with the DQM formula, Joker tried something new, but in a similar direction of the GBC classics. In this game, the young monster scout must get stronger to become a master monster scout and also unfold the mystery of the Incarnus, a singular monster.

Versions and features:

Monster from DQI-VIII, or new.

New and updated mechanics (the skill system is inspired by VIII’s).

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

Info: Carries over many mechanics from Joker, but improves them. The biggest improvement is in the UI, which later became the base for all the 3DS DQM games and remakes. The story follows a young monster scout whose airship crushes into a mysterious island and how he and his team of monsters unfolds the mystery of the island to get back to civilization.

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Joker 2 Professional (DS), 2011. [There is a fantranslation for this title.]

- Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 for DS (EFIGS)

Over 300 monster, mostly from DQI-IX, or new.

There’s a third Joker game for 3DS, called “Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3” in Japan, released in April 2016. Said game got a “Professional” version with various enhancements and new monsters in early February 2017. As of March 2017, none of the 3DS DQM games has been announced for the West.

Dragon Quest: Torneko no Daibouken 2

Info: Second DQ Mystery Dungeon game, and as the first one (which only released in Japan), it follows the famous merchant from DQIV: Torneko Taloon.

In this title, players must outthink enemies who are often faster or stronger than them, efficiently using weapons and magic when the odds are against them. What's more, in order to succeed they will also test the limits of Torneko's insatiable appetite.

Versions and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest: Torneko no Daibouken 2 (GBA), 2001.

- World of Dragon Warrior: Torneko: The Last Hope for PS1 (E)

Play as Torneko.

It is the only Mystery Dungeon game set in the DQ universe we got.

This game uses randomly-generated dungeons.

My recommendation: There is only the one version available for us.

There were two other games of this series available in Japan: one for SFC (which was the first DQ spinoff and the first Mystery Dungeon game ever created) and another for PS2 and GBA. There is a fourth DQ Mystery Dungeon game, which doesn’t focus on Torneko anymore, but on the childhood of DQVIII’s Yangus and Red. This is Japan-only too.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime

Info: This is the second entry of the “Slime MoriMori” series. It got its American release in 2005. There are tank battles aside from the regular “slime vs the world” fights. This was the last DQ game to get released in America but not in Europe.

It is an action game in which we control a Slime called Rocket, who has to fight the Plattypunks to save the slime town of Boingburg.

Play as a slime (named Rocket)!

Tank Battles.

Lots of puns.

My recommendation: There is only the one version.

The other games in this subseries are Japan-only, as well as its manga. The first game (GBA) doesn’t have tank battles, and the third one (3DS) replaces them with ship battles.

Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors

Info: First person on-rails action game. The Wii’s nunchuck works as your shield and the Wiimote acts as your Sword. All the major characters are named after swords, like Claymore or Fleurette. In this game, you have to save the kingdom of Avalonia from an evil demon named Xiphos.

Versions and features:

On rails.

Use the Wiimote as your sword and the Nunchuk as your shield.

Likeable support cast.

My recommendation: There is only a version of this game.

Dragon Quest Wars

Info: A small turn-based strategy game for DSi. Think of it as a light mix of chess and Fire Emblem (not really, but its not 100% chess either).

Versions and features:

- Dragon Quest Wars for DSi (EFIGS) [Trailer]

Multiplayer: Up to 4 players.

Use some DQ monsters as your units.

My recommendation: There is only one version of this game. As the DS servers got shut down in 2014, so the only way to get it nowadays is using a 3DS.

Honestly? I wouldn’t recommend spending a cent on this.

Fortune Street / Boom Street

Info: First “Itadaki Street” game to release outside Japan. This is the second game in the Itadaki Street series to mix Dragon Quest with Super Mario Bros. The gameplay is a bit of a mix of Mario Party, DQ’s Treasures n' Trapdoors (T’n’T) and the classic boardgame Monopoly.

Versions and features:

- Fortune Street / Boom Street for Wii (EFIGS) [Trailer]

Play as characters from the main series like Slime, Dragonlord, Alena or Patty; and characters from the Super Mario Bros universe such as Peach, Luigi, Donkey Kong or Waluigi.

Multiplayer up to 4 players.

Wifi modes. (Note: As of 2014, Nintendo shut down the DS and Wii servers).

My recommendation: There is only the one version.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below

Info: First entry in the action-based Heroes subseries. It is a collaboration with Dynasty Warriors creator Tecmo Koei. This was also the first DQ for a gaming device to come West between 2011 and 2015, quite an honor! In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character. (Note: You can choose between Luceus and Aurora, but the one you don’t choose is still playable, the one you choose will be always in your party).

It a mix of Dragon Quest mechanics with Dynasty Warrior mechanics: parties of 4 characters, MP, tension, tons of enemies, just a handful of attacks per character... Story-wise is a quite simple light vs darkness story.

Monsters who were peaceful have started attacking humans. The player, the captain of the kingdom’s army have to find out why, battling hordes of monsters in the way.

Versions and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Heroes (PS3), 2015.

- Dragon Quest Heroes for PS4 (EFIGS) [Trailer]

Stable framerate.

Can’t get all the preorder bonuses.

- Dragon Quest Heroes for PC (EFIGS) [Trailer]

Better settings.

Unstable framerate.

My recommendation: The PS4 version. Why?: It was made with the PS4 in mind and has stable framerate. Also, Tecmo Koei’s PC ports are rather infamous...

Dragon Quest Heroes II

Info: Second entry in the action-based Heroes subseries. Doesn’t have any connection with the first one, and fixes or adds what the people wanted in the first game, like a worldmap, (online) multiplayer, or less tower-defense missions.

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twin Kings and the Prophecy's End (PS3, PSV), 2016.

Confirmed versions for the West:

- Dragon Quest Heroes II for PS4 and Steam (EFIGS) [Trailer] (Note: Western release dates: PS4: April 25th in NA and April 28th in EU; Steam: April 22nd in both.)

My recommendation: Still not out in the West, but the PS4 version. Why?: Firstly, Tecmo Koei PC ports are infamous for a reason; secondly, the PS4 version was the main version in Japan (and the one i have already played and enjoyed); and thirdly, because its the only one that has a physical release and that reversible cover is rather cool.

In May 2016, Square Enix released a sequel in Japan called “Dragon Quest Heroes II: Twins Kings and Ending of the Prophecy” for PS3, PS4 and PSV. It includes some upgrades from the feedback they got from the first game, including: having a world map, having multiplayer and being able to have more than four skills per character. On the 1st December 2016, Best Buy leaked its localization. On the 8th of the same month, Square Enix announced the western release dates for the PS4 version: April 25th (NA), and April 28th (EU). A Steam version is also releasing on April 25h (both NA & EU) Square Enix announced on February 22nd 2017. [The Vita version isn’t profitable for SQEX, so they will skip localizing it.] (x). The games’s director hinted to a third game on the PlayStation Awards 2016. (x)

Dragon Quest Builders

Info: “What if you mixed Dragon Quest and Minecraft and got a legit good game?”. In this game, you can choose the gender of the main character. (Note: you can change it and any character customization option anytime you want from the setting accessed from the main menu)

At the last part of DQ1 the player is given a choice. One option lets you continue and the other gives you a game over. DQB explores that option, the story in which the Dragonlord won. You, a builder chosen by the goddess Rubiss, must rebuild the land of Alefgard.

Versions available and features:

- Japan-only releases: Dragon Quest Builders: Revive Alefgard (PS3), 2016.

- Dragon Quest Builders for PS4 (EFIGS) [Trailer]

High quality graphics.

Better draw distance.

Better share options (can make videos and up to 4 image in tweets).

- Dragon Quest Builders for PSV (EFIGS) [Trailer]

Digital only (it is only about 270mb, though. The Asian physical release includes English.).

Portability.

Poor sharing options (screenshots with Start + PS Button. If you share it with the twitter app, you can only choose 1 image. If you want to share more than 1 at a time, you have to transfer your screenshots to your computer).

- Dragon Quest Builders for Switch (EFIGS) (*Releases in Spring 2018)

Its more akin to the PS4 version than the PSV version.

Has some exclusive content, like the DQ1 cartdrige work table and the Sabercub mount.

Portable.

My recommendation: Depends on your tastes. Why?: One is great for its portability (Vita) and the other looks way better and has better sharing methods (PS4).

On August 2016, Square Enix stated there were possibilities of this game getting a Nintendo Switch version. (x). (They announced it officially on the 14th of September of 2017. Will release next spring in all regions.) On September of the same year, they said a sequel was being considered. (x). Later, in the PlayStation Awards, they hinted to a sequel again. (x)

Dragon Quest Builders 2 was announced for Switch and PS4 on the 6th of August of 2017, with no release window announced so far.
