HERES A CUTE PROMPT FOR U BC THE ANGSTY ONES ARE KILLING ME peter and reader babysitting morgan together and being cute yeah that’s it but it cute :) also i totally agree w not writing for tom anymore, but either way it’s totally ur decision who you write for <3
oooooof a concept we don’t talk about enough :,) and thank you lovely <3
-
babysitting morgan is a task that often falls on you. your dad has major trust issues, so he’ll only allow one of his own to be responsible for such precious cargo.
tonight is tony’s and pepper’s date night, which means it’s also yours and morgan’s. you don’t mind because you thoroughly enjoy every second of your quality sister time.
she is a handful, however. you’ve invited peter over to join to compensate for that. he absolutely adores morgan, and you swear she likes your boyfriend more than she likes you.
traitor.
morgan is perched in peter’s lap, who has an arm gently tucked around her. he’s sitting cross cross and next to you on the floor. you’re currently reading the two of them a story—the hungry caterpillar. it’s a classic, whether they’ll admit it or not.
“one piece of chocolate cake, one ice cream cone, one pickle, one slice of-“ you’re once again interrupted, this time by a groan from morgan. she’s been sighing and scoffing every few pages. lowering the book, you glance over at your sister.
“what’s up, morg?” you finally ask her, though you’re dreading her answer. “i’m too old for this, y/n. you are, too,” she complains, earning an amused raise of peter’s eyebrows.
she’s a drama queen, just like your father.
“you’re five!” you remind morgan with a slight frown. “this is what five year olds are supposed to like.” morgan shifts on peter’s knee so she’s facing you. he’s doing his best to not laugh at your bickering.
“five and a half,” she corrects you. “same difference,” you retort. morgan smirks in her true wise guy fashion. “that’s an oxymoron.”
tossing the book aside in defeat, you hum. “i’d be careful if i were you, morgan. i know where you sleep.” morgan’s jaw drops, her little fingers tugging on peter’s flannel collar for help. “is that a threat?” she wonders. you stick your tongue out at her. “it can be.”
“ladies, ladies!” peter breaks up your argument just as it steers left. “c’mon, y/n/n. you’re better than this. violence is never the answer.” he shoots you a look, weaving a hand through morgan’s hair. she smiles wickedly.
“ugh, will you ever take my side? she started it!” you whine to peter and flick your sister’s shoulder. “no fair! i’m only five, remember?” morgan plays the age card, jutting out her bottom lip. peter continues to stroke her locks soothingly. “your sister’s a big meanie, but it’s okay. i’ll protect you,” he promises.
“you’re so fake, bug boy,” you reprimand your boyfriend. you tap on the hard cover of the hungry caterpillar. “don’t act like you weren’t entertained! this is good stuff right here.” peter shares a funny look with morgan, sucking in a breath. “uh… no comment.”
he slings his free arm around your shoulders and presses a kiss your temple. still annoyed, you push him off of you.
“don’t be like that, babe.” peter pulls you into his side with a chuckle, squeezing you closer. “i just think we could all use something a little more… stimulating, right?” having won the discourse, morgan beams. “i agree. two against one!” she taunts.
“yeah, yeah. you guys deserve each other,” you grumble back, but accept peter’s embrace nevertheless. “what do you wanna do instead, morgan?” “let me think,” she ponders her options, gasping when an idea comes to her. “can we try the shield from uncle steve? dad says peter knows how.”
morgan receives tons of high-tech paraphernalia from the team because they want her to get in touch with her roots. they’d done the same when you were her age. it’s insane, the things she has access to. peter is an actual avenger and doesn’t reap the benefits like she does.
peter does prefer not to engage in superhero activities on his days off. although, he clearly has a knack for operating cap’s shield, as he demonstrated in berlin. he can’t say no to morgan, either.
“this should be interesting. you down?” you check with him, rubbing his shoulder. peter gives you a grin and morgan a nudge forward. “go get it, morg. i’ll teach you all the skills you need to kick cap’s…” he pauses to censor himself. “rear end.”
giggling, you wrap your arms around peter’s neck. “we’ll meet you outside, okay?” you inform your sister. morgan happily hops up from peter’s lap. “okay! don’t swap too much saliva while i’m gone,” she teases you and peter before running along to the lab.
a light blush sets on peter’s cheeks, you hiding your face in his neck.
“where’d she learn how to talk that way?” peter murmurs and moves you to sit in his lap, where morgan was. “my dad, probably. they must be onto us,” you reply with a kiss to his shoulder. he lets out a quiet laugh, hugging you against his chest. “i noticed. nothing gets past a stark.”
“speaking of,” you prompt peter, gazing up into his doe eyes. “be honest. you were vibing with the hungry caterpillar, weren’t you?” a wide smile crossing peter’s features, his lips brush the tip of your nose softly.
“i might’ve been a little invested… don’t tell morgan.”

March TBR/W.
Every book, audiobook, tv show and movie I want to consume in March 2021.
-Hence ‘TBR/W’ - to-be-read/watched.
I’m not usually a fan of pre-planning my media for the month - I plan out all my media obsessively, but doing it by month seems a little too much like setting deadlines for my taste, and I’m sure I’ll somehow manage to turn watching tv into a chore. Regardless, it’s worth a shot, so this is going to be a rough guide - I’m going to pick four of each category, one per week, because I’d rather underestimate and surpass than overestimate and have to defer things to the next month. So let’s go.
Books
Tumblr media
1. Skyward and 2. Starsight by Brandon Sanderson
Skyward is set in a future where the human race is on the verge of extinction, trapped on a planet constantly attacked by alien warriors. Spensa, a teenage girl stuck on the planet, wants to be a pilot, but it seems far-off. Then, she finds the wreckage of a ship that appears to have a soul, and she must figure out how to repair it, and persuade it to help her navigate flight school.
In truth, I mainly want to read this because of how highly it’s been praised by Hailey in Bookland on YouTube. I actually tried reading Sanderson’s Mistborn series a couple years ago, and just didn’t click with it. I love fantasy, but I can pretty confidently say epic fantasy just isn’t for me. However, Sanderson’s work is adored by many, and Skyward and its sequel Starsight appeal so much more to me, and I can’t wait to get to them.
Tumblr media
3. House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas
This is Maas’s first technically-adult book; Throne of Glass is young adult, ACOTAR being classed either as young or new adult. I’ve been a fan of Maas for a long time, and, though I enjoy her books less now than I have in the past due to how seriously they tend to take themselves, I’d still love to read this one. Where her previous series were both fantasies, this sits somewhere between that and a sci-fi, but I can’t say as-of-yet what I think, because I haven’t read it yet.
Bryce Quinlan finds herself investigating her friends’ deaths in an attempt to avenge them after they were taken from her by a demon. Hunt Athalar is a Fallen angel, enslaved by Archangels, forced to assassinate their enemies, when he’s offered a deal to assist Bryce in exchange for his freedom.
Tumblr media
4. Scythe by Neal Shusterman
I listened to this as an audiobook in 2019 as part of BookTuber Book Roast’s Magical Readathon, and didn’t hugely get along with it in truth. The audiobook was excellent as an audiobook, but the story Ian’s I just didn’t really vibe. I think I just want to like this book, so I think it’s worth a reread to see if my opinion changes.
This follows Citra and Rowan, a reluctant pair of apprentice Scythes - in a utopian future where humanity has the means to live forever, it is the job of the Scythes to control the population by essentially reaping the souls of those they choose to die. Neither Citra or Rowan want it, but I don’t remember enough about this book to say any more.
Audiobooks
Tumblr media
1. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
This is the last book in the Hunger Games trilogy, and you either already know what this series is about, or you’ve been living under a rock for the last thirteen years. I read this book for the first time nearly seven years ago, and it’s stuck with me. It sent me into a phase of only reading dystopian books (The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken was part of this, and was the series that really got me into reading), but this was the main one that stuck with me.
It contains a powerful message about capitalism and discrimination, and this is the second time I’ve listened to the audiobooks, though the god-only-knows-what time I’ve read the series. I listened to The Hunger Games and Catching Fire in February, which automatically puts this on my to-listen for March.
Tumblr media
2. Ghosts of the Shadow Market by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan, Maureen Johnson, Kelly Link and Robin Wasserman
This is a novella bind-up set in the Shadowhunters world, that I would imagine has quite a bit to do with the Shadow Market, an aspect of the Downworld introduced in The Dark Artifices, which I finished in January.
In truth, I’m mainly planning to listen to this audiobook because it’s the only Shadowhunters novella bind-up with an audiobook, and I’d just rather read additions to the main Shadowhunters series in this format rather than physically.
Tumblr media
3. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
This is a Hunger Games prequel that was released early last year, and I just wasn’t going to read it. I heard several reviews, the general consensus of which was basically that it’s not as good as the trilogy and is somewhat unnecessary, but, in truth, my curiosity’s got the better of me, especially since I started listening to the trilogy’s audiobooks again.
This prequel follows Coriolanus Snow as a mentor in the Games before he became President of Panem and the wonderful villain of the original trilogy.
Tumblr media
4. Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
I mentioned this in my physical TBR post a couple weeks ago, but have decided to listen to the audiobook instead. A few weeks ago, I’d started to run out of audiobooks I wanted to listen to, and didn’t want to read anything on my regular TBR in this format, including this book. But, I went through a load of audiobook recommendations, and this was one of them, so it joined my to-listen.
I’m not hugely into contemporary books, but I’ve wanted to get more into the genre for a while, and this was the first one to join my TBR.
This novel follows Eliza Mirk, your typical high school outcast, who publishes a hugely popular web comic under the pseudonym LadyConstellation. Then Wallace Warland, the biggest fanfic writer of her comic transfers to her school and begins to draw her out of her shell.
TV Shows
Before I go into my list, I’d like to mention that I am currently watching WandaVision and am definitely planning to watch Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, but both come out on a weekly basis, so aren’t being included on this list. Also, I’ve been watching way too much YouTube recently, so I’m not sure I’ll get through all of these this month, especially since I’m watching the Arrowverse shows, which have such long seasons.
Tumblr media
1. Love, Victor Season 1
This Love, Simon spin-off follows a character named Victor at Creekwood (I think that’s the name?) High School. I saw Love, Simon twice in cinemas when it was released, and, miraculously, it made me cry. I love that movie.
This series was released last year on Hulu, which is only available in the US, but as of February 23rd, it’s one of the shows that came to Disney+ as part of Star.
Tumblr media
2. The Flash Season 1
As mentioned, I’ve started watching the DC Arrowverse shows. I watch tv shows through alternating seasons - as in, I watch season 1 of show A, then season 1 of show B, then 2 of A, etc., then when I finish one, I start watching show C - but I’m treating the Arrowverse as one show (even though it isn’t) so it’s not the only thing I’m watching. So this is technically Arrowverse S3, preceded by Arrow S1+2 (though I haven’t actually started S2 as of writing this because of how much YouTube I’ve been watching, so I’ll be finishing that first).
I genuinely don’t know that much about most DC superheroes, Flash included, but I’m going into this having been assured it takes itself less goddamn seriously than Arrow. It’s my sister’s favourite Arrowverse show, and I can’t wait.
Tumblr media
3. Dare Me Season 1
I added this Netflix show to my watchlist when it came out, and my basic understanding is that it focuses on the cheerleaders at a high school, and begins when a new coach arrives. It focuses on the psychological damage behind competitive cheerleading, and I’m not convinced I’m going to love it, but I think it’s worth a shot.
Tumblr media
4. Arrow Season 3
I’m so confused by this poster. This is specifically the season 3 poster, and I’m so confused, but I’m sure it’ll make more sense when I watch the season.
I explained the weird way I’m watching Arrowverse (named as such because Arrow was the first show in it) already, but Arrow follows Oliver Queen, the son of one of the billionaires of Starling City upon his return after being stuck for five years on an island when a cruise ship carrying him and his father sunk. His father left him with a list of names of the people ‘corrupting’ the city, and Oliver takes it upon himself to assume a vigilante identity and take them down.
Movies
I’m not a huge movie-watcher, but I end up compiling so many to watch that, to ensure I get round to them, I watch a movie every time I finish a tv show season. I’m also currently re-watching the MCU movies in chronological order.
Tumblr media
1. Instant Family
This is just something that came onto Netflix recently and I thought might be entertaining, and so it joined my list.
This follows a couple who decide to adopt a teenager, only to find out she has two more siblings.
Tumblr media
2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
This is just a continuation of my MCU re-watch - I love this movie. I love Guardians of the Galaxy, full stop (on another note, I just generally don’t understand why British people call it a full stop and Americans call it a period. Neither name makes particular sense).
Tumblr media
3. Avengers: Age of Ultron
And here we have another continuation of my MCU rewatch. I honestly think this is my favourite Avengers movie, because the whole teams actually together, and Wanda, Scarlet Witch, is introduced - I love her. I really didn’t like Vision until WandaVision came out, though.
Tumblr media
4. Behind The Try: A Try Guys Documentary
Not technically a movie, but still. (Are documentaries movies? I tend to think of them as separate categories, but I guess they’re both movies. Hm.) I’ve been watching the Try Guys for years, which means I need to convince my sister to give me her Google password so I don’t have to pay for this.
I’m probably not going to stick to this list, and even if I do, I’m either going to also consume things not on it, or just not finish it. But, you’ll have to wait for my March wrap-up to find out.

AU Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier - A Kiss of Life
MASSIVE ENDGAME SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Reader gender: neutral
Summary: A special person with special purpose whose only family are the heroes and who’s in love with Bucky gets stuck in the middle of the events of Infinity War and Endgame.
Author’s note: So I think we can all agree that Endgame isn’t cannon and I can do whatever I want because this is my very own pocket dimension.
Tumblr media
With just a flick of his arm, Thanos flings you into a tree nearly knocking you out. Vines tie you up as you walk the line of consciousness and darkness. Your ears are ringing as you look at the very last stand the Avengers can make. You see Steve standing his ground, holding back the titan, as you turn your head you see Bucky’s motionless body on the ground. You want to run to him, but you can’t move. From the corner of your eye you see Wanda, trying to destroy the last of the Stones. As Cap falls, she is the only hope, the last thing standing between Thanos and his goal. A shock wave knocks you again against the tree as the Infinity Stone is shattered. This time the darkness takes you.
You can’t tell how long it has been as you open your eyes again, but the vines around you loosen and fall off. As you look around you see the Avengers gather up again. Their faces reflect only horror and shock.
“Where did he go? Thor?” you hear Cap as you stand up.
You see Bucky walk towards you and feel relief to see that he’s still alive. You stumble forward to  take his outstretched hand.
“Darling,” the man says to you, but you hear a hint of something in his voice not understanding what it is.
“Where did he go?” you hear Steve ask again.
“Steve?” Bucky asks and you see his arm turn to dust just a moment before he falls to the ground and his whole body disappears.
You gasp in shock and horror. You too fall to the ground right next to the ashes. As your hands touch the ground the dust clings to your bloodied skin. And you look up. First your eyes meet Steve’s who has knelt down next to you, but then you look around. In the distance you see airships crash, you hear some shouts coming from the battle field. You see T’Challa helping up Okoye. They became your family when you spent your time here in Wakanda while Bucky was recovering. Okoye’s face reflects yours as the man disintegrates in front of her.
You hear more voices, the talking raccoon’s, the tree’s, Rhodey’s... You are paralysed as Steve offers you his hand to help you up. You look at the dust and blood on your hands.
“Bucky...” you whisper, tears in your eyes.
Steve realises that you don’t even notice him so he stumbles forward, towards Vision’s body. Everyone gathers around him and the realisation comes as a tidal wave - you had lost.
You sit on one of the fold up chairs on the balcony of the vacant home. Is it yours or does it still belong to the family who had lived here before? It doesn’t really matter at this point. It hadn’t mattered for a while because all hope of a home, of a family had turned to dust five years ago.
You hear a creak coming from inside the house, but you don’t bother to look who it is, you already know there is just one person who could find you.
“Hello, Steve,” you greet him as he sits down next to you.
“You weren’t easy to track down,” he says quietly as to not disturb the silence of the evening.
“Well I tried my best. Figured it would be easiest to just disappear like everyone else or maybe not quite like everyone else,” you say and tighten the blanket around you. “Why did you come here?”
“I came to tell you that there might be hope. Hope of bringing them all back and we could use all the help we can get.”
“Hope? It’s been five years,” you turn to look at him teary eyed, “Five years... but every day feels like a lifetime, even so, every time I close my eyes, I see them. It haunts my dreams, but I know I don’t have to tell you that. I would have given my life for his, but there was nothing left of him. I lost half of my family to a snap of the fingers. Bucky, Sam, Wanda, T’Challa, Shuri, Peter... And I just... I couldn’t bare the idea of losing any more of it so I left. I tried to find purpose, every day I tried, but I just couldn't see the light anymore. I live on borrowed time and I know it’s not mine to waste, but I can’t find a path. I already died once before, but They brought me back for a reason. I was just a kid when he gave his life for mine.”
“Who?” Steve wonders as he has never heard that story.
“I never did find out, but I remember seeing him in the Beyond just before his soul was reaped,” you look at your hands, “So tell me, what is this hope.”
You listen to him as he explains the plan. All this sounds insane to you, but at this point you’ve already had a giant purple man turn your happiness to ashes with a snap of his fingers so who is to say that time travel is the craziest plan out there.
“So then what? You get all the Stones, you build a new Gauntlet and then bring us all back to 2018?” you ask.
“No, we’ll bring everyone who was dusted back to today,” Steve clarifies.
“What about those who lost everything? What about those who took their lives, those who fell into depression and addiction?  What about the five years you’ll take from those who will have to come back to this messed up world?”
“We can’t save everybody, we never could. There are many people who have found a new life in this crazy world, who have moved on, who have families now, we would be taking that away from them.”
You nod silently, this is an impossible choice, one you don’t want to make so you just fall silent. Could this be your purpose? Or is this just empty promises? What could you possibly do to make a difference?
“Will you come with me? We could bring him back, we could bring everyone back,” Steve says insistently as he leans forward to look at you.
“I want them back. Whatever it takes,” you meet his gaze.
You are back at the compound. You are greeted by familiar faces, knowing nods. Everyone is focused and ready for what’s to come. This is it. The all or nothing time heist. You agreed to be left behind to watch over the machinery, to make sure everyone gets back. You watch out the massive window, or rather the glass wall. You overlook the grounds and see Tony. A little girl sprints into his arms and he picks her up. Pepper walks closer and Tony gives his girls a big long hug. At that moment you realise what’s at stake.
You had hoped to get your happiness back, to give others their happiness back, but now you see that some people truly did find their happiness in the darkness. If the mission failed, if something went wrong, all the rest of joy would die with it.
“Are you ready?” Steve asks and you turn around to give him a nod.
“This has to work.”
“It will.” he says with determination.
Everything that follows seems almost a blur. The last preparations before they go to retrieve the Stones, for you their mission only takes a couple seconds, but when they return, Natasha has been lost, she had sacrificed herself for the grater good. That gives you a new blow, but you do have all of the Infinity Stones. Without a body to mourn the rest of the Avengers seem lost and so do you. With a heavy heart you sit by the little dock, commemorating what she gave up, but no funeral, not now, not like this. You glide along, mourning for the friend you lost, but hopeful as you are so close of possibly getting everyone else back.
You watch the others work as they build the new gauntlet. They had brought the old and charred one with them, they studied it and also Thor’s weapons to be able to recreate the glove, but now it is ready. It feels like the world has gone silent. You see the others talking, but you know not of what, you only stare at the glove until Banner buts it on and snaps his fingers again. You just stand there, not being able to comprehend what is happening, not being sure what to expect, but all things considered, you did not guess that the building would collapse in on itself and bury you and the rest of the Avengers with it.
You fight for your life in the rubble, your communication device lost, all alone you call out for help, but know that you can’t be heard over the sounds of explosions coming from somewhere outside. You push aside the rubble, still coughing and choking. It takes you a long time to make your way forward, but eventually you find yourself face to face with a big concrete slab that you are not able to move. You look for another way out with no success, but then the rubble shifts and you are lucky enough to not get crushed by it, but instead you see light and you climb out to overlook the huge battlefield. You see golden sparkling portals all around you with soldiers and heroes walking out of them, you realise those are the people who were dusted and now they’ve returned. You see Thanos’ forces and are filled with new hope as the odds seem to be on your side. You look around hoping to see the one face you’ve missed the most, but it is impossible in this massive crowd.
You fight with all you have cutting trough the brutal creatures the titan sent your way. You get deeper and deeper into the battle field being surrounded by both enemies and friends. As is starts to rain down fire you find yourself under a golden shield. You keep fighting until you find your Bucky. You lock eyes and he smiles. Back to back you fight off the outriders. Everything will be alright now, you can feel it in your bones even though it gets harder and harder by the second. The dead creatures start to pile up and the savages leap towards you in greater and greater numbers. As it feels like you’re being overrun by the creatures they suddenly turn to ashes all around you. The fighting is over.
You turn to face Bucky and jump up to hug him he lets his gun fall to the ground as he wraps his arms around you tight. You can feel his relief and you almost start to cry. You have him back. Your happiness. You pull away and he gives you a heated kiss on the lips.
“We won,” you whisper and look around you. Then you notice the people standing together, heads lowered. You see Steve’s face, you see only one half of it, but it is enough to realise he’s crying. You take Bucky’s hand and hurry towards them. He follows you until you stop right next to Rhodey. You see Pepper crying over Tony’s dead body and your insides knot up. You remember so vividly him picking up his little girl, the love he had for them, for the world. “Earth’s best defender” Steve had called him. You see your purpose now, it never was about your happiness, it’s about the greater good, Tony knew it.
You turn to face Bucky again. This isn’t fair. You look at him, you imagine the life you always dreamed of, with him. A home, a family of your own, something Tony already had, something he gave up for everyone else. The true ultimate sacrifice.
“I love you,” you give the man a deep kiss, “I’ll always love you, remember that. And please forgive me.”
Bucky looks confused and concerned as you let go of his hand and step away. You kneel next to the dead hero and take his hand.
“You deserve to live, the world needs you,” you squeeze his fingers and place a light kiss on his forehead.
You feel the strength go out of your body and everything fades to black. From the darkness stars emerge, you recognise this place - the Beyond. All around you is the vast emptiness of space and millions upon millions of stars.
“Why did you do that?” you hear an almost accusing voice.
“I had to. You need to go back to your girls,” you smile a sad smile at Tony.
“What about Barnes?”
“I hope he’ll be alright, I hope he can forgive me,” you feel like you would cry, but not here, not with these being your last conscious moments.
“The universe will be a darker place without you,” he says right as your soul is reaped and carried off into a new life.

“Anybody can become angry, that is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way, that is not within everybody’s power, that is not easy.” - Aristotle, The Art of Rhetoric
Well, look at that ancient Greek dude rolling out a pitch-perfect summary of - what I currently consider to be - Liz’s core issue on TBL. My core issue is that I cannot keep things brief, so I’ll poke this some more bc damn S5 was so much better than I expected, and it left me with an urge to try and sort this canon mess into sth I can swallow.
What’s the deal with Liz, why is her relationship with Red in such a terrible shape at the end of S5, and why is that a likely promise of better things to come?
It’s possible to look at this deterioration as a more or less continuous (organic!) process that reaches back at the very beginning; a process to which both characters have contributed their fair share over the years and now they are reaping the consequences and setting themselves up for a potentially healing collision.
I. Liz has narcissistic traits. Red is a natural born charmer with closely-guarded secrets and a pervasive guilt-complex. Putting them together is like putting mints in a bottle of coke: even on a perfect sunny day it's the kind of fun that leaves a mess.
II. Liz’s traits are amplified by Red’s behavior and Red’s behavior is warped by Tom’s presence. When Red scales things back (i.e. stops going on guilt-trips whenever others don’t feel like facing the consequences of their actions), it only makes things worse. This is the dark side of their intense "lock and key" dynamic, the deep angst pit that has been fore-fronted since S3B due to a rapid sequence of betrayals Red suffers from those closest to him. Tom triggers both empathy and repulsion in him, which in turn feeds his self-hatred and prompts him to keep enabling Liz out of guilt, creating an unsustainable bubble that finally bursts in S5.
III. The current name of the game for Liz is repression and denial, for Red it’s still obsession and rumination. At any given time Liz works off of a partial image of him, which is less about him keeping things from her and more about her purposefully ignoring parts of him in a misguided and doomed attempt to keep an illusion of safe simplicity (she does this with Tom, too). Meanwhile Red displays clear signs of compassion fatigue, which comes with its own destructive habits and distortions of reality.
IV. Sprinters are bad at running marathons. This simple truth has been a background tension factor in the Red/Liz relationship from the get-go. It’s mirrored in Red’s earlier troubles with Madeline and in Liz’s “Tom problem”. It keeps them united yet out of sync, which leads to misunderstandings, doubts, and quite a lot of friction.
more on these behind the cut:
I. Liz has narcissistic traits. Red is a natural born charmer.
Liz has a narcissistic streak and a tendency to delude herself as a messed-up coping mechanism, all of which she voices right off the bat in the pilot episode when Cooper asks her to profile herself (and to give us a brief intro to the character). These manifest chiefly as
(1) angry, aggressive outbursts (2) a sense of entitlement/egocentrism (3) blame-shifting
and she displays these traits to varying degrees throughout the show.
Now add to these the standard “Reddington Effect” that gets pointed out by other characters, articulating what Liz has been feeling since day one:
“There's no one on earth who can make a woman feel like the center of his universe more than Raymond Reddington.” (204)
“I was star-struck. It was exciting and captivating and... it consumed me. My work, my marriage.” (411)
We can also witness this "soft power” in action when Red approaches Zoe, Berlin’s daughter, to use her against her father. We can see how easily he can charm and pull people in to get what he wants. Sometimes it hilariously backfires - as it should - but that’s beside the point rn. The point is, Liz seems to receive this standard treatment, too, and she’s immediately, intensely receptive to it.
We can see both the positive (fascination-attraction) and the negative (rejection-aggression) side of this chemistry early on. She gets exposed to Red’s regular charm routine but it’s ultimately a v different experience because what those women quoted above don’t know (and what Liz still doubts) is that with her, his feelings run very, very deep. She is both the means and the end, the journey and the destination. Neither can walk this road without the other but walk it they must.
II. Liz’s traits are amplified by Red’s behavior and Red’s behavior is warped by Tom’s presence.
Thank God I have Tom, because with you, I never know what to believe. I have never lied to you. How the hell would I know?
Red’s secretive, seductive, guilt-ridden behavior feeds Liz’s narcissistic impulses.
(1) His ingrained "I will never tell you everything” ground rule regularly forms a volatile mix with her proneness to irritability and anger. There are countless examples of this (often understandable) reaction with a wide range that goes from a raised voice to actual physical aggression.
(2) It also clashes with her belief that she's automatically entitled to be told everything, regardless of the possibility that knowing might not make much difference to her but could get others killed, or the fact that she’s often careless w/ sensitive info and sometimes straight-up ignores the answer anyway.
This is an irresponsible and wasteful way of going about getting answers. Wanting to know doesn't entitle anyone to know. It's not at all surprising that Red - whose very life depends on carefully calculated discretion - is rarely fully forthcoming. Still, this is a major source of friction, esp as it seems to run counter to him telling her how special she is and treating her as such with a consistency that most well-adjusted people would fall for. A narcissistic personality like hers stands even less chance. This triggers jealousy and possessiveness very early on, and later engenders a full-blown expectation that when push comes to shove, he would always put her needs above anybody else’s, including his own. This (partially conditioned) expectation is in play e.g. when Tom re-enters her life and also when he violently leaves it again.
(3) Red is also burdened with a lot of chronic guilt which makes him an easy target for blame-shifting by those select few he loves. He often allows Liz to push blame on him for things he is not responsible for and he suffers in silence because “in his heart, he knows he must pay”. This also enables her to delude herself into thinking that he's indeed the unified source of all her problems, which makes her receptive to Mr. Kaplan’s terrible Solution to Nothing that targets him as such. Red has branded himself a “sin eater” and this gets taken full advantage of in a way that veers into emotional abuse. It paves the way for Operation Possum and its fallout that ripples across the next two seasons.
These 3 major negative “lock and key” interactions combine and reach a very unhealthy peak in S3/B. Liz’s thoughtless, pointless fake death stunt pushes Red to an edge he barely manages to pull himself back from, and it throws a wrench in the delicate cogwheels of their relationship where the degree of functionality and “healthiness” has always hinged on proportionate reciprocity (of good and bad alike). The faked death plan is - among other things - so disproportionately cruel and so exceptionally dumb and pointless, it unhinges this interplay.
It shakes Red from his grief- and guilt-induced stupor and cracks his habit of putting Liz on a pedestal. In S4 it is now Dembe who gets to be referred to as the "light in the darkness", which, given the changed circumstances, is a much better arrangement for both Liz and Red. Red would never ask anyone to carry this burden but the truth is, he needs someone like that by his side to keep him from falling to pieces. Dembe is a centered, reliable, well-adjusted person who can carry this heavy weight. Liz can't and she shouldn't, either. Now Dembe needs to be the lighthouse keeper as they navigate their stormy relationship.
On top of pulling Liz from the pedestal, Red also begins to scale back his willingness to play buffer and absorb blame. He pushes back against the kind of behavior he partially conditioned and enabled. He refuses to give in to Mr. Kaplan’s absurd and reckless vendetta that still targets him as the “root of all evil” in Liz’s life. He refuses to keep serving as a scapegoat for Tom’s failings and Liz’s self-imposed blindness, but the most significant “slight” contributing to the big fracture in his relationship with her is his refusal to share the secret of the bag.
“That’s why you’re here. That’s… Not to help me, not to avenge Tom’s death, but to help yourself and get your precious secret back.”
It is less about the secret itself and more about Red prioritizing it above her. She is jealous again but this time it is not directed at a person but at his “precious secret” that ultimately separates him from her, and once again it masquerades as projected and misplaced anger stemming from her deeper desire for their relationship to be close and genuine.
We have been here before when the Fulcrum surfaced:
"That's why you came into my life then. And that's why you're here now. Not because of me or who I am to you, whatever connection we might have, but because of some... object. Some thing."
and after her name gets cleared in S3/B:
I thought maybe after all we've been through the past three months that you might want to take a break. It's a mythic battle, and it's not anywhere close to being over. It's your battle, not mine.
and then again with the bag of bones. “Not me but” is the underlying issue that gets to her in each of these instances and it always manifests as anger.
From her warped perspective (warped by pain, confusion, and narcissism) he is deeply hurting her and taking everything from her to keep himself safe and cozy. It is the complete betrayal of her (partially conditioned but still unreasonable) expectation that he’d always put her and her needs first. In her eyes, this is again proof that their relationship, just like the one with Tom, has been a mere tool, a manufactured illusion, which - coupled with the impostor reveal - must truly mean Red never really cared for her at all.
But her assessment is once again dead wrong because she refuses to take a careful look at all the available information in proper context - a broader context where her personal issues are not the only ones of importance and where Red not bending to her every wish, esp those that make him deeply miserable or an instant murder victim, is not a sign of lack of genuine feelings but of a healthier attitude. She is also projecting anger at her own dishonesty with herself on him, and while it worked back when Red was receptive to it bc it was conducive to his self-flagellation, this messed up coping mechanism is finally breaking down, too, due to his increasing resistance and the multiplying events that signal he was never that alleged single source of evil.
"We want the same thing."
Indeed. It's the need underpinning Liz's anger, the same one Red has already articulated, albeit indirectly: "an inextricable intimacy and a commitment." Liz uses anger to express this, Red uses fish stories and Tom.
We were both half right. Together, we were right.
Liz sees Red's commitment forever lying elsewhere: with his precious secrets. Red sees Liz's commitment tied up in her relationship with Tom even after his betrayal, even after his literal death. They’ve been longing for the other to break away and commit, but this longing still manifests indirectly and out of sync: she pulls Tom between them like a guardrail (and DG, too), so Red flees into his “work” as a defensive response, which she interprets as lack of genuine interest and withdraws further into safe denial, and we have a vicious cycle on our hands. Despite all that, she still wants him to give up his secrets and he still wants her to give up her fixation on Tom. It’s no accident Red is so captivated by her when she describes her fantasy to him. It’s v much his, too.
But they both feel betrayed right now and both cling to their respective security blankets: Red to his secrets, Liz to her anger.
III. The current name of the game for Liz is repression and denial, for Red, it’s obsession and rumination.
Liz's remark about Red during her therapy session is telling and relevant here:
"Some of what he's done is unimaginably bad. But some of what he's done for me is unimaginably good."
She has been privy to many good things Red has done for others (hell, an entire county once) but those are not factored in when she evaluates his "goodness". No, this is about her and again, it produces only a partial image. It is a good start to say to an outsider that they don’t have the full picture of who he is (or can be) and therefore their understanding is skewed. However, the same goes for Liz and she refuses to accept that her POV is limited, too, and that she is complicit in it being so. DG is a prime example: she is handed a DNA test and everything that contradicts the result is pushed aside at once. The same happened when Tom told her he was a changed man: she ignored the contradictions, so she could have the illusion of stability. Red withholds information but it’s Liz who blatantly lies to herself about many things.
But back to the quote above: so only what Red does for her is weighed on the scale of goodness. Only that defines his moral character. It is decidedly untrue but again it's a manifestation of possessiveness and something Red partially conditioned in her in moments where e.g. he says saving her helps him live w/ himself (104) or where he implies that being with her allows him to become less of a monster (209). As a result, he is reduced to something less but something confined to her, something conveniently simplified that - depending on her need - is easier to either embrace or scapegoat. When he goes along with what she wants (whether it is actually good or not), he is a welcome, positive presence. When he refuses her (no matter how justified or necessary it is), he is deemed toxic and gets rejected. But after Tom inserts himself back into their lives and after the fake death betrayal, Red seems to have less and less willingness to silently confine himself to her whims and wishes, and they finally reach a breaking point in S5.
Fans on both sides of the "why does Red care so much about Liz" fence focus heavily on love as his primary drive, and label the nature of the R/L relationship accordingly: parental and romantic respectively. What else could explain such grandiose display of unconditional love other than being related or being in love? To quote Red, "perhaps there's a third option." There is and despite it being on full display (or maybe because of it since the show has conditioned us to assume a convoluted mystery everywhere) we often overlook its importance:
With Red, guilt is the operative word. This is the governing emotion right next to love (a more recent development) to which many of his grand gestures are anchored. The pervasiveness of guilt in Red's life is pointed out several times in the show, most notably in episodes 104, 216, and 319:
“The farmer, who is no longer a farmer sees the wreckage he's left in his wake. It is now he who burns. It is he who slaughters. And he knows, in his heart he must pay.”
“The truth of it is, once you start down this road there's no logical place to stop. For the first few years, it may work. You'll draw some measure of virtue from being her invisible benefactor. But that won't last. It's all a fraud. That it's really not about her at all. That it's all about you. And you're just going through the motions to salve your own guilt. All the money, all the time and effort, all the favors in the world cannot possibly equal what you took away from her. Everything else is just a nice gesture.”
“It was a Hobson's choice. There was a woman and her child. Both were doomed. Both would die. I could either save one or lose both. I chose the child. It was the worst thing I've ever had to do in my life. Worst thing by far. I was arrogant. I presumed that there was an order to things, that there was... that if I nourished and protected and taught the child, she would be safe and happy. And she was neither. No matter what I tried to do, all I brought her was misery and violence.”
In each, the debilitating nature of guilt is given emphasis, the symptoms of which are exhibited by Red throughout the show. Chronic guilt can be an extremely powerful drive. As Red notes, "once you start down this road there's no logical place to stop". He genuinely believes he owes Liz an immeasurable debt and that nothing, not even wrecking or even giving his own life for her, could make up for it. If we look at his behavior from this perspective, the primary answer to why he is willing to go to such great lengths for her becomes obvious. He loves her, too, of course, but love is - as noted above - is a more recent, healthy development, and it still has to co-exist with deep-seated guilt that keeps it in a toxic choke hold. This combination is the main reason why he cannot deny Liz anything (see: Tom) and why he's so vulnerable to blame shifting. When someone believes they deserve to be used and punished by the one they also come to love more than anything, the danger of abuse skyrockets, too.
Guilt-driven gestures, no matter how grandiose, are ultimately selfish and fake, as Red observes. But after he finally meets her, love starts creeping into the picture, shifting their dynamic and imbuing it with something real and selfless. And Red starts pushing back a little now where Tom is concerned. This sprouting, deepening love, however, gets badly trampled on when the guilt-trips and betrayals come. Red endures them because guilt says "you deserve it", but it no longer has quite the same hold as it once did. Heartbreak is a somewhat sobering experience but until the still unknown source of his guilt is uncovered and addressed, his relationship with Liz, his love for her, cannot reach genuine fulfillment.
IV. Sprinters are bad at running marathons.
Red and Liz want the same thing (as we have established above) but she is impulsive and wants it now whereas he is wary and plans long-term.
“I can’t tell you what I’m gonna want 10 years from now. Even a year from now. I just know what I want right now.”
Liz is no fan of delayed gratification. She has wants and she wants those satisfied "right now" even if it means she has to trade a more secure, more enduring yet still unavailable future (Red) for a readily available present of poorer quality (Tom). The former requires hard work (of the sweat, blood, and tears kind), honest self-evaluation, careful planning, and lots of patience. The latter is just easy and right there, so she cuts straight to the finish line, then it all promptly comes crashing down on her.
This is what happens after her exoneration in S3B. She goes to Red but instead of some quality personal time, he acts prickly and distant, then whips out a giant map to show her how just much hard work still needs to be done before Odysseus can even consider returning home. Her response? She rejects it (and him with it) and goes straight back to Tom. He promises to give her everything she wants right there and then at a discount. She only has to bury her head in the sand regarding a couple of things and since Liz is prone to self-delusion and denial by default, she jumps at the opportunity. This is where her relationship with Red begins to go off the rails.
“Circumstances are far more complex than we ever imagined. I’m betting on the long play. The future.”
Red plays the long game when it comes to the most important things in his life, and he doesn’t shy away from torturous self-examination and self-denial to secure enduring results and a better future for those he loves. Liz’s relationship with Tom was a sprint with many corner-cutting and the inevitable letdown. They had a short present, but no future. With Red, there is a future still but Liz has to run a marathon to reach it and being a sprinter, she struggles a lot.
But she is not the only one struggling. Red is still traumatized by the loss of his family, which makes him instinctively reluctant to try to settle down again. Those who inflicted that debilitating loss still represent an active force in the world (see: the map). The longing to settle down is certainly there. It’s a dream he shares with Liz. They practically wish upon it under the stars while “Our House” is playing, but on top of his guilt and grief, the circumstances seem to be forever against him, so he doesn’t dare actively push for it like she does (he even rejects Agnes at first). He redirects his focus to the “job” to try and create a safer environment and maybe a future opportunity. This folds back to the marathon approach that Liz rejects at first but now, after Tom's demise, she must face. She vows to destroy Red but I don't think it will be a literal destruction. Deep down they still want the same thing and even though they have yet to admit it openly, they want it with each other.
Their time spent on the run in S3/A is immersed in the theme of a shared home. Liz and Red seek refuge in a theater where the stage is set as a home. This is where Liz tells Red about her fantasy and this is where Red immediately retreats behind a wall when he realizes that Liz will be pulled back into Tom's orbit.
“I’m not interested in what you want. I’m interested in what you deeply desire. I can sense that death and vengeance aren’t what drive you, Elizabeth. Or feed your soul. [What does?] A lost world, I suspect. Another life. If you can’t face your truths, I can’t be of service.”
The Djinn makes a clear distinction between “what you want” and “what you deeply desire”. It is echoed in the tension-filled dream Liz has where Red removes Tom from the picture just when he is about to spill a secret (nice piece of foreshadowing btw), then stalks up to her bed and asks her the same thing - not just what she wants but what she really wants. This image of Red stepping up as a sexual-romantic partner after her husband’s demise is shoved deep down in her subconscious. It is one she is not yet ready to face, but it is there - the option of making a home with him, an option he, too, keeps at arm’s length due to past trauma and present circumstances, and it adds even more tension to their interplay.
This exact type of unresolved tension has already popped up on this show when Madeline Pratt re-entered Red's life w/ some grievances.
"Florence was everything, our way out, a fresh start. But to you, it’s all just a job."
She feels betrayed and played for a fool because Red chose to continue living his danger-magnet criminal life, prioritizing it over her and their intended home.
"They used Pratt as bait, faked the kidnapping in order to bring Red into the Kings’ custody."
Later on, counting on his savior complex, she lands him in hot water to get even. She stages her own kidnapping and lures Red into a trap set by an enemy with a score to settle. If it sounds familiar, that’s because we see something similar play out between Liz and Red. It’s low-key in the background during S3-4 (w/ the whole home theme) and gets kicked into high-gear in the S5 finale (when Liz thinks he played her for a fool so he can continue living his criminal life):
We were out. You said the ship we were on was headed to Spain. Change of plans. Because? Because after far too much time playing defense, today’s the day we switch to offense.
They could get away and start a new life but Red refuses to quit his "mission". As mentioned above, he tells Liz they still have a lot to do and her reaction is disappointment, and when Tom offers her everything Red is not yet able (to go away and start fresh), she accepts. And this is when their downward spiral begins in earnest and all the accumulated hurt peaks in S5, in Liz's very Madeline-esque plan to fake a kidnapping and lure Red to one of his enemies for some answers and score-settling (the same business the Kings were into w/ their illicit auctions):
If you’re gonna tell him you hurt me, he’s got to believe you. You knew Reddington would come for you. He got to do what he always does: try and save me.
Indeed. And he is about to confess his greatest secret to save her life when they get interrupted and an alternate solution presents itself. He kills Sutton, takes the bag and leaves. Liz vows to destroy him after this and I think she is right. Raymond Reddington needs to die for good this time. He needs to die so the man behind that mask can finally emerge. He needs to die so Liz can finally face and understand the full picture.
Red’s guilt feeds on the secrets he keeps and Liz continues to cling to her anger because these secrets are a wedge between them. The murky past and their distorted perception of it (Red's warped by guilt, Liz's scrambled by memory manipulation) hold them and their relationship hostage, so it must be disclosed and sorted for both their sakes. The second chance will not come until this happens. When it does, I think it will be the most cathartic moment in the history of this show.
This collision course is their way back home.

The Trump/Twitter Hypocrisy.  When Will It End?
Tumblr media
Last week, the nice folks at Twitter permanently suspended my account - again.  For the fourth time.  The previous three times I was kicked off the site were for trolling upstanding patriots like Matt Gaetz, Mitch McConnell, and Lindsey Graham, respectively.
The interesting thing re: this latest suspension, was not that I was kicked off again. By now, I’m used to seeing my account suspended on what seems like a monthly basis - as well as having to rebuild my followers from scratch.  Whatever.  However, the apparent reason for this latest suspension was for posting a satirical clip a few of us Resisters made of president pie hole opening fire on a group of holiday shoppers -- an obvious nod to his own statement of being able to get away with “shooting people on Fifth Ave.”  The caption read "Raise your hand if you think this will be the scene the day after he’s acquitted by the Senate."
Interestingly enough, no sooner am I banished to the Phantom Zone, forever, the Trump campaign releases a video depicting the president as the mass-murdering 'Thanos' from the Avengers, showing the president waving his hand and eviscerating the entire Congressional Impeachment delegation.
Did the folks at Twitter suspend his deplorable offspring for retweeting such blatant hate speech and for all-but-calling for the deaths of these elected officials?  Did they at least suspend the accounts of those running Trump’s campaign who created the ad and who thought it was a good idea to publicly advocate for the annihilation of his rivals?  Did they do this because, as our Commander-in-Chief, he -as well as the people around him - should be held to higher standards than your average Twitter user? Did they do anything at all?  How about the last video, in which the president’s featured as “The Kingsman”, assassinating church goers, including entire news organizations, as well as shooting president Obama in the face?  Did they do anything then?  #Crickets
Why not, you ask?  Ah, that's the big head scratcher, kids.  Maybe it’s because there’s a shitload of GOP/Trump-sympathizing interns working the servers who make it their mission to tilt the scales every chance they get?  (That would explain our on-again-off-again relationship).  Maybe it’s because the geeks at Headquarters were playing Xbox when the spot was posted and not paying attention?  Or, perhaps it’s because CEO Jack Dorsey found himself puckering up and kissing some bloated, orange ass in exchange for a few undisclosed favors in one of the happy couple’s recent White House meetings?  Maybe good ole Jack’s so guilt-ridden, he decided to relocate to Africa to avoid the media?  Who knows?  The only thing certain is there is an unequivocal double-standard when it comes to how Twitter polices Trump vs. the rest of us, i.e. it’s non-existent.
Why, since this incredibly unqualified lunatic took office, has Twitter not done a thing to try and curb his attacks on private citizens?
Why haven’t they taken any action when the president of the Unites States uses members of Congress, the FBI (poor Lisa Page), career ambassadors, even dead Congressmen and Senators, as target practice?
Tumblr media
Why have they stood by and done nothing as the orange idiot calls for the “outing” of whistleblowers?  Why are they doing nothing now that he’s apparently followed through and leaked the Ukraine whistleblower’s name? Aside from being a crime, this makes Twitter accomplices in allowing this brave individual’s life, and possibly the lives of his/her family to be put in danger.
If all this is not enough, does it get any more pathetic than the president of the United States using his favorite app to publicly shame a sixteen year-old girl because he’s jealous he didn’t win “Person of the Year”? Or because he was virtually ignored at Davos in favor of this brilliant and brave teenager?
Tumblr media
However, the Orange Emperor’s favorite Twitter past time seems to be publicly shaming/attacking Congressman Adam Schiff - be it using his bully pulpit to criticize his physical appearance in front of an arena full of hungry zombies, or going so far as calling for his head on a spike.
There are so many things wrong with this mind-boggling ambivalence on the part of the world’s most popular communication tool, it’s beyond words.  Forget the fact that the president violates one of Twitter’s “Main Commandments” on an hourly basis.  That being:
“You may not engage in the targeted harassment of someone, or incite other people to do so.”
Seriously, Twitter?  You’re joking, right?  Take away every single tweet in which @RealdonaldTrump has either directly harassed, or called for the harassment/public shaming of one of his critics and/or opponents, and you’re left with about six on the economy.  Out of about twenty-five thousand.  If that’s not bias, I don’t know what is.
Why hasn’t there been a single article or opinion piece in the last three awful years by an executive at Twitter Central who’s watched their application be used for the primary purpose of sowing chaos and discord amongst his/her fellow Americans and who had the balls to try and put a stop to it?  Where is the Twitter whistleblower?  Something is definitely rotten in Denmark.
Legally speaking, at the moment, there doesn’t seem to be anything we can do.  I’ve had scores of friends who’ve had to deal with the two-faced, spineless, hypocritical policies of an entity that thrives on playing judge, jury and executioner towards its users for the most minor of infractions, who, like me, want to sue, and who are then told by an attorney that, because Twitter is not a state or federal agency, they are not bound by first amendment law.
This is a problem that needs fixing, asap.  After all, we, the users are the reason - the ONLY reason - Twitter is a multi-billion dollar company.  It would seem being allowed to operate, virtually unregulated (you listening Congress?), you’d think the Powers That Be would be forced to afford its users some sort of protection under the Constitution.  Especially if they define their main purpose as that of a tool for “Public Conversation.”
Should the biggest entity for conversation/communication/breaking news the world has ever seen be allowed to operate free of oversight?  To reap the financial/social rewards it gets by providing such a platform and, in turn, not be subjected to any rules, outside of the ones it provides for itself?  Seems a tad one-sided.  Especially since they’re now a publicly traded company.
Additionally, Twitter’s entire “Appeal Process” is an absolute joke.  A pathetic sham that mocks the user in its apathetic taunt to offer a chance at redemption.  Be interesting to know how many users whose accounts have been suspended were reinstated on appeal.  I’d venture to say the number is zero to none, as you aren’t ever given the opportunity to communicate w/ a live human being, or to fully explain your situation/defense.
Similar to Facebook’s M.O. of treating its users like batteries in The Matrix, sucking every bit of life they can get before flushing us into the void, Twitter provides one of the most pathetically inadequate support departments in the history of support departments.  They make the cable companies look like Trader Joe’s.   I’ve had my account suspended for stupid things like ‘wishing’ for Mitch McConnell’s untimely passing (please God, hurry).  However, there’s a big difference between wanting/wishing for something and threatening to do it, yourself.  With each one-sided suspension, Twitter is telling us they are the Thought Police.
The real dangerous part about what’s happening is, once again, we have technology far eclipsing the pace of regulatory practices/congressional oversight.  As we speak, there’s absolutely nothing stopping the most powerful man on earth from using the power of his office, and the technology at his fingertips, to threaten, intimidate, harass, bully, and lie, round-the-clock, 24/7.  Not Congress, not The People, and, Lord knows, not Twitter, itself.  It may take generations to recover from such a traumatic, incessant, daily assault on our senses, on the Truth, and our world as a whole.  And, for providing our unhinged POTUS a soapbox free of consequences, Twitter’s role cannot be understated.
Imagine, for a minute, how much better things would be if they actually held the president to the same standards as the rest of us?  Imagine if Trump’s Twitter account had been suspended for violating their terms early on? Even for a week.  Not only would it have made him think twice before he attacks another private citizen/company, or out a whistleblower, imagine what an amazing week that would’ve been?  Free of hate, free of malice and misleading proclamations and declarations being spewed out and blasted at us from the most powerful man on earth, every five minutes, like the spigot of a piping hot sprinkler of hate on a sweltering summer’s day?  One can dream.
Til then, perhaps a massive class action suit against Twitter by thousands of users who were suspended/kicked off/banned for the same things the president does on a daily basis would wake them and/or Congress up?  Even if it’s not winnable, watching their stock drop a dozen points due to such an egregious pr gaff would make any company rethink its relationship with its users, and the public.   Feel free to email me - [email protected] if you’re interested in joining the suit. When combined, we ‘snowflakes’ form an avalanche.
Social media has become the primary way of communication for 99% of modern society - not to mention a trillion dollar behemoth that’s virtually unregulated.  It’s about time these Titans of Text were held accountable to their users, from whom, they generate one hundred percent of their value.  Til then, keep a look out for my fifth Twitter profile. #RESIST
(UPDATE: 5/26/20 After nearly four years and twenty-thousand lies, it's good to see Twitter finally decided, to put a 'disclaimer' on ONE of orange idiot's ridiculous tweets and hold him to the same standards as the rest of us.  (wink). #Babysteps
Twitter also suspended my account, yet again, this past weekend for comparing White House press sec and houseplant, Kayleigh McEnany to the cliche bimbo at the opening of a slasher movie.  The Thought Police claim, by saying an empty-headed bimbo who walks right into a machete has more credibility than McEnany, I’m “promoting violence.”  Also, trying to fill out the “Appeal Box”- which, as stated above, as all but useless, would be a bit more fair if you were given more than a twenty character limit to state your case.
But my main point above, re: in lieu of a class action, public pressure can force Twitter and/or Congress to do the right thing and apply their policies equally, no matter the individual’s status, was just proven to work.  In fact, IMO the leader of the free world should be held to a higher standards than the rest of us.  Nonetheless, Twitter finally bowed to pressure due to all of us screaming bloody murder.  Keep it up, folks.

Many talk about ‘love’. If they only knew that love is a person; and WHOM this person is that love speaks of...
This is evidently not love for neighbor that offers itself hoping for a return (selfish). It is not self-interest love, offered out of a desire for release from the wheel of suffering (eastern religion) or for “heaven” or some such ulterior thing (works righteousness). It is not the kind of love that the ancient Roman poet Horace commends when he advises,“‘Tis your own safety that’s at stake, when your neighbor’s wall is in flames, and fires neglected are wont to gather strength.” {And it definitely is not the selfish ‘erotic’ desires and practices of a fallen humanity.}
What we see commended in the New Testament Gospels is, rather, self-giving, other focused love, which loves just because love is good. What is commended is love that knows that it is right to care about your neighbor’s house regardless of whether your own safety is at stake, and even if it is positively dangerous to help him.
“‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” - Matthew 5
However, Jesus did not just teach that people should love their fellow human beings in this openhearted and nonpartisan manner... He treated everyone he met as an image bearer of God.
Women were his neighbors, for example, even though one ancient Jewish text says, “He that talks much with women brings evil upon himself and neglects the study of the Law and at last will inherit Gehenna [hell].”
“Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, ‘Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John’— although it was not Jesus himself but his disciples who baptized— he left Judea and started back to Galilee. But he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.
A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink’. (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, ‘How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?’ (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, “Give me a drink”, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.’ The woman said to him, ‘Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?’ Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.’ The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.’
Jesus said to her, ‘Go, call your husband, and come back.’ The woman answered him, ‘I have no husband.’ Jesus said to her, ‘You are right in saying, “I have no husband”; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!’ The woman said to him, ‘Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.’ The woman said to him, ‘I know that Messiah is coming’ (who is called Christ). ‘When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.’ Jesus said to her, ‘I am he, the one who is speaking to you.’
Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, ‘What do you want?’ or, ‘Why are you speaking with her?’ Then the woman left her water-jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, ‘Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?’ They left the city and were on their way to him.
Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, ‘Rabbi, eat something.’ But he said to them, ‘I have food to eat that you do not know about.’ So the disciples said to one another, ‘Surely no one has brought him something to eat?’ Jesus said to them, ‘My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, “Four months more, then comes the harvest”? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, “One sows and another reaps.” I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour.’
Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, ‘He told me everything I have ever done.’ So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there for two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Saviour of the world.” - John 4
So were tax collectors, even though to stay in such a person’s home was essentially to share in his sin.
“He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax-collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycomore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.’ So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, ‘He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.’ Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.’” - Luke 19
The ritually unclean lepers and the social outcasts in general, often described in Bible translations as “sinners,” were also his neighbors.
“Once, when he was in one of the cities, there was a man covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he bowed with his face to the ground and begged him, ‘Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.’ Then Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, ‘I do choose. Be made clean.’ Immediately the leprosy left him. And he ordered him to tell no one. ‘Go’, he said, ‘and show yourself to the priest, and, as Moses commanded, make an offering for your cleansing, for a testimony to them.’ But now more than ever the word about Jesus spread abroad; many crowds would gather to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. But he would withdraw to deserted places and pray.“ - Luke 5
The entire life of Jesus Christ is remembered in the Gospels as a period of “gracious activity, directed especially to the sinful and despised people in Israel and even to gentiles,” which “aroused suspicion and downright opposition from the Pharisees and their scribes.”
Jesus is also remembered as loving these and other enemies and eventually as laying down his life for them.
“One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, ‘Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’” - Luke 23
God , who promises in Genesis 4 to be his enemy Cain’s avenger of blood and puts a mark on him so that no one will kill him , becomes in the New Testament the God who himself lays down his life for his enemy out of love for him.
“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends... - John 15

The Journal of Dr. Kiyo Alvara: Entry 1
Good evening, Journal.
My apologies for neglecting to write recently, there’s been little of note these past weeks. However I’ve had a very eventful couple of days. To get straight to the point, Gaedren Lamm is finally dead, and I’ve met an intriguing group of adventurers who helped make such a feat possible. It would seem that, willing or no, my fate has become intertwined with theirs.
Now, I will start from the beginning. When I woke the other day, I found a note placed on my bedside table. Nothing in my home or workplace had been moved or removed, so the culprit wasn’t a mere thief. The contents of the note informed me that if I wanted to track down Gaedren and avenge Kyth then the writer of the note, one Zellara Esmeralda, wished to help. The note gave me an address and specified that I should go to the location that night to meet with her and a group of adventurers who would be vital to stopping Gaedren from ruining more lives.
I took precautionary measures, of course. I brought along many of my best healing potions, as well as some formulaes, acid vials, and explosives. If things went south and this was some convoluted trap, I was well prepared to fight or flee.
When the sun was dipping down in the horizon, I took my leave and made for the address indicated. I found the door already open, and lights on within. I peeked my head inside, and heard voices down the hallway. Cautiously, I made my way inside.
I found the aforementioned group of adventurers, seated around a table. They asked me if I was the one who summoned them, which I denied. I showed them the letter which I received. One of their group showed me that she received a similar letter, signed with the same name.
Introductions were made. The first to offer his name was Garran, a tiefling and the son of Unae and Elkin Thandas. He’s quite the wide-eyed one, contrary to his appearance. He seems quite friendly, but I fear that the kind of optimism he carries rarely survives contact with the outside world, much as it pains me.
Next was Orda, a large half-orc with an impressive tower shield. He seems a friendly sort, and I shall likely enjoy his company going forward. I’ve made an offer of celebratory drinks later and look forward to getting to know him better.
After Orda was a young woman with dark eyes and a mousy look about her, who introduced herself as Sai Gwenn. The poor dear seems nice, but scared of her own shadow and the coat she wears is in absolute tatters. I have made offer to take her shopping for something more presentable, but she turned me down, claiming she liked the clothes she has.
The final member was a man named Hayden, a student of the sciences himself. He’s an interesting one, I can’t quite put my finger on him. He seems to guard his emotions well, I can’t get a good read on him. He’s clearly well learned and I respect that he’s chosen the same profession as I, albeit he has a focus on surgeries. However his proficiency with knives in a fight is more than I’d expect of someone only trained in surgery, and there’s a guardedness about him that makes me feel there’s more under the surface than I’ve seen. Still, the rest of the group are people with good hearts, so I am certain Hayden is no different. Sai especially seems connected to him at the hip, looking to him for guidance and following him like a lost pup.
When introductions were complete, our hostess made her appearance. She apologized for keeping us waiting, then explained why she brought us together. This group of adventurers had come to Korvosa in search of a woman named Rubella, a shiver dealer who had committed multiple murders and pinned them on a local carnival in the last town their group passed through. She was guilty of having made a powerful form of shiver, so potent that it caused multiple deaths before she was forced to flee Korvosa. What a waste of talent, this sickening misuse of alchemy.
Rubella, as it turned out, had returned to Korvosa after her murderous scheme had been uncovered. She fled to Gaedren with the promise that she would make a stronger variant of shiver to spread in the streets of Korvosa, making the drug lord that much more money.
Zellara informed us that Gaedren had stolen her harrow deck, which was a family heirloom, and in an attempt to get it back her son was murdered by him. One of many lives cut tragically short by his actions. I, for one, was more than happy to assist Zellara in reaping vengeance and bringing Gaedren to justice. Most of the adventuring group seemed to be in agreement on this, since they’d come to town seeking Rubella regardless.
Orda seemed to have his suspicions, however. Apparently in the last place they had been, someone had told a lie and kept a secret that caused more people to be killed, and he didn’t want a repeat of that. He told her he would be glad to help, but he wanted to know anything she might be hiding, anything that might come up later that we should know now.
In the interest of honesty and keeping Orda’s trust, Zellara did tell us one other thing. She was already dead, killed by Gaedren when she tried to avenge her son. She was now trapped, her spirit connected to her stolen harrow deck and her body’s remains, which Gaedren had kept out of some sick fascination. The room which we’d been standing in was not that lavish well lit home we’d believed, with a snap of her fingers she revealed the truth: we were in a place that had long been abandoned and forgotten with the death of its owners.
Orda seemed satisfied with the answer, if perhaps a bit shaken by her surprisingly straightforward admission to being a ghost. I admit to being caught off guard myself. It’s not every day you meet a friendly haunt, after all. Most are quite a bit more sinister.
Zellara informed us that we should prepare and seek out Gaedren’s hideout the next night, as he wouldn’t be there at the moment. Sai and Hayden decided that they would take the extra time to scout the old fishery Gaedren was based out of, while I’d decided to prepare more potions. I told the group of adventurers my idea: I would use a disguise potion and a vocal alteration potion to make myself appear as one of Gaedrens customers, someone drug addled and homeless. I would go inside and scout it out, see if I could locate the children he held hostage, and any other potential dangers. Then I would give them a signal to attack.
The plan was flawed, Hayden pointed out, as we didn’t know the interior to know how to best set off a signal, and we didn’t know just what Gaedren might do to his ‘customers’. Hayden suggested a counter idea, that he would disguise himself as Rubella’s deceased husband, using my disguise potions and a ring they had gotten off the man’s body. He would then take Sai as a ‘hostage’ to offer to Gaedren and Rubella, get close enough to them, and put a knife in their ribs. I was concerned about how realistically Hayden could pretend to be this dangerous woman’s husband as opposed to someone they’re less familiar with, like an addicted customer, but the rest of the group seemed fairly convinced it was a good plan, so I conceded the point.
We each went our separate ways, I spent the night making the potions Hayden would require for his plan, then I retired to bed for the night. I had a restful sleep. I feel as though I had a pleasant dream, although I don’t really remember it well now. I must have brewed my polypurpose panacea incorrectly, as I didn’t have the promised lucid dreams they give me.
Regardless, the next morning I met with the adventuring group in a local tavern called the Red Dragon Inn. We discussed our plans for the evening. Hayden and Sai would enter through the dockside entrance, while the rest of us would circle around back. If we heard any commotion, we were to burst in uninvited and help Hayden and Sai to dispatch any unsavory folks who might have set upon them. The plan concerned me for many reasons, but it was the best plan we had. I handed off the potions I’d brewed to Hayden and informed him of the time limit on each, telling him to be absolutely sure to drink the vocal alteration potion last, so that he wouldn’t waste any time with it on.
Afterwards, I returned home to open my office. Hayden came along, interested in what he might be able to learn from my medical practice. I will be happy to share my knowledge with him, and he agreed to share his notes as well, although he was very specific in telling me that his knowledge was purely surgical and not medical. That was fine, I’m practiced in surgery and while it’s not my forte there’s nothing to lose from reading what knowledge a college has to share. I get to meet with others in the field so rarely, I’m eager to pick Hayden’s brains. He’s only a student at the moment, but the very fact he’s in a medical college rather than apprenticing means that he’ll have experiences in the field that I do not.
Though he said a few things I found a tad off putting, if I am to be honest. For one, I heard him mention “The Lady of Graves” when he spoke to Zellara. I would like to find out what a pragmatic and intelligent man in the medical field could gain from worshipping the goddess of death. Yes, I am aware it’s a common line of worship, especially amongst those who must see death so often. Yes I am also aware that she also presides over childbirth. I still do not see the logic behind someone sworn to help heal others and prevent death in following the doctrine of a goddess who celebrates the nature of death. I can see how it’s a good coping mechanism, I suppose, but I would feel like a failure as a doctor if I needed to take comfort in the idea that my patients dying was simply fate or it’s their time or what-have-you.
I apologize. I got a little heated there. It’s a subject that utterly confounds me, and I cannot believe that an otherwise intelligent seeming man like Hayden would have to take comfort in the shallow platitudes offered by such a faith.
We also got into a conversation about the state of Korvosa after I went about setting a child’s broken leg. Her mother had no money to pay with, and the poor girl was asking if she would be able to walk again soon so that she could keep working so her family could eat. I wish I could say it’s the first time I’d heard this same heartbreaking tale, but this is all too common nowadays. I helped the child and gave them instructions on what they could do to help it heal faster and properly. Afterwards, I told Hayden what I just wrote: that this is all too common, and that there is a huge discrepancy between the rich and poor in this city. Hayden showed distain for how the city was being run, but not for quite the same reasons as I did. He said that this was no way to run a business, and that the short term gains wouldn’t outweigh the long-term consequences. Certainly, he’s not wrong. But it’s such a cold and pragmatic way of putting it when peoples’ lives and livelihoods are at state. Comparing Korvosa to a failing business doesn’t do justice to the cruelty the common folks in the city endure.
I don’t know if Hayden sensed that what he said bothered me, or he simply felt it was time to get ready for our plans. Either way, he excused himself to walk the streets and make sure he didn’t hear any whispers that might clue Gaedren in on our plans.
I closed up shop and made my way to meet the others at the inn, then we made our way to the docks. As we grew close to the abandoned fishery, the putrid smell of stale ocean water and rotting fish filled the air. Orda, Garran, and I slipped around to the back after Hayden drank down the disguise potion and readied the vocal altercation potion.
I didn’t see what happened next, but pieced it together from Sai and Hayden’s accounts later. Hayden and Sai played their parts excellently. Hayden dragged Sai inside and talked down to a violent little gnome who worked for Gaedren. When Rubella entered the picture, Hayden played his part to a tee, and had the shiver maker virtually wrapped around his finger with his quick thinking and perfectly timed use of the wedding ring.
There was one particularly dangerous part, in which I am relieved I didn’t go in by myself as I initially planned. Rubella accepted Hayden’s lie that he’d captured Sai and was using her as a hostage to keep the rest of the adventuring group at bay, and agreed to a plan to make her their drug addled servant much as they’d apparently once done to a group of skulks. However, Rubella pulled out a vial of shiver, and told Hayden they should get started.
With a level or finesse I wish I’d been there to see myself, Hayden managed to make it look like he’d forced the drug down her throat while really switching it out. If he can do that with someone scrutinizing him so closely, I bet he could give magicians and illusionists a run of their money.
Rubella and one of Gaedren’s lackeys took Hayden and Sai deeper into the fishery to work out a business proposition. It’s here that Hayden make a misstep. He tried to rush into the final part of the plan, and in an attempt to get Rubella close to him, he said that on dying he wished he would have been close to her, and that all he wanted now was a kiss. This was apparently too out of character for her husband, even if he’d died and been resurrected. Rubella called his bluff. She and Hayden ended up having a scuffle, and in the process Sai undid the knot Hayden had tied and screamed an ear shattering shriek.
Garran, Orda, and I heard the scream from outside the door, which happened to lead right into the room that the others were fighting in. Orda broke open the locked door, only to find a table in his way, which he also removed from the equation. Garran entered the room and I followed suit.
Hayden had his knives out and was facing Rubella and her alchemical bombs. Sai was…it’s difficult to describe. Her face was inhuman, she looked a bit like a monstrous humanoid bat. I’ve yet to ask her just what the cause of this form was, but she seemed fairly adept at it seeing as she took a good chunk off Rubella’s arm with a vicious bite.
I drew my bow as I entered the room and trained it on the other alchemist. I asked Rubella if she was the one who’d made and was planning to distribute a powerful new form of shiver, to which she agreed. I loosed an arrow into her, and told her that this was a waste of her alchemical talents, ruining others’ lives with her creations rather than helping others. She laughed at me, called me naïve for looking down on her choices. I argued that there are other ways to make money with alchemy, ways that help others and nurture them rather than harming and corrupting everything they touch.
Rather than reply to me, Rubella downed an invisibility potion. There was an open trapdoor nearby, which one of Gaedren’s other minions had escaped through before I’d entered the room. It was certain she’d made her escape through there, and Orda ran to follow after her. I would have gladly joined him, but the vicious little gnome had appeared behind Hayden and he looked like he needed some help. As I stepped into the room and got the gnome’s attention, there was a shout from the room I’d just left and manic laughing. Garran had been attacked by a crazed half-orc who called himself “Giggles”.
I told Hayden to try to back out of the room to give me room to use an explosive without catching him in it. The gnome didn’t take kindly to this and took a swipe at me. I’m quick on my feet when necessary, however, and I managed to avoid his attack. Then I followed up with my own attack. Not with a blade but with a bomb. The gnome knew he was outclassed, and expressed that the money just wasn’t worth it. I told him to run, then, because the only blood I was looking to spill was his boss’. I doubt the vicious little gnome learned his lesson, but perhaps he at least learned enough to find a low profile job that won’t end with adventurers out for his head.
I then went to help the others take care of “Giggles”. It was close quarters, forcing me to forego any explosives at first. However as the half-orc kept getting in swipes at Hayden and Garran, Hayden forcefully told me to hurry up and use a bomb, and not to worry about him. Garran assured me that tieflings are resistant to flames and that he’d be alright, too. Despite my misgivings, I did as Hayden demanded and loosed a bomb at the gleefully murderous half-orc. The others finished the job, and I made a beeline to the trapdoor to catch up with Orda and Sai.
Just in time, it would seem. Orda was trying to save a child who was hanging above a pit with a large alligator inside, and Sai had been deafened by a thunderstone and was being ganged up on by Gaedren and his minion who’d fled earlier.
In that moment, all other thoughts were lost to my rage. Finally, Gaedren was right in front of me. My brother’s murderer was right there. I forgot about everything else that was happening around me as I approached the scumbag. He mocked me, saying that he remembered my brother. He said I had the same weakness behind my eyes as my brother did. He laughed. That disgusting piece of trash laughed at the memory of my brother falling to weakness and dying of his drug.
I barely remember throwing the bomb. I know I said something to the man as I did, but it was all a blur. The next thing I knew, his charred body was on the floor at my feet. It was so easy. It was so, so easy to snuff out his life. I felt a knot of disgust and anger inside which hasn’t completely gone away even as I write this. There was no remorse in that piece of trash human. He didn’t beg for mercy or forgiveness. He laughed at what he did. He deserved what he got. He deserved what he got, he ruined so many lives, wasted so many peoples’ potential, just to make money off their suffering. He deserved to die… and killing him did absolutely nothing. My brother is still dead. His other victims are still dead. I’m still alone. All I accomplished was dirtying my hands. I’m a doctor, a healer. I’ve never killed someone in my life before now.
I feel sick, but this is not a disease I can cure myself of with any medicine.
The rest of the night was a blur. Someone set the building on fire. Sai fed Gaedren’s body to the alligator and freed it from its captivity, for better or for worse. Apparently she can speak to animals and convinced the predator that we were its allies. An extension of that bat-like form I saw before I’m certain. Zellara took in the orphaned children who Gaedren had been using as pickpockets, and we buried her head, which Gaedren had kept in a box as some twisted trophy.
We gathered at the inn where the others had been staying and looked through all the items we’d collected from Gaedren’s hideout before it burned to the ground. Of interest was a key shaped dagger which Hayden was convinced was cursed or haunted, and which bore a disturbing resemblance to the weapon used by the key-lock killer. I do hope it isn’t cursed, the last thing we need to be carrying around is an evil dagger. We also found a broach which bore the royal family’s insignia on it, and which we deduced had probably been stolen from the queen herself. We decided it would be prudent to return it.
I then returned home and collapsed for the night. I don’t think I’ve ever been so exhausted in my life. I do not envy the life of adventurers, if this is how it always is.
Unfortunately, it seems I am not destined to walk away from this group. In the night, I had a strange dream, which the others later told me they each had as well. An unrecognizable voice was speaking in my mind. They told me that we were going to become great heroes, protectors of the weak and innocent. I saw each member of our group in a battle against a large beast. Each member fought with the skill and power I’d only heard about in stories. Even I was there, using powerful formulae I could only dream of with my current skills. Some of the feats, frankly, looked impossible. Like something the Heroes of Sandpoint would do, not like something a ragtag group in Korvosa could ever pull off. Yet the voice promised we would get there someday.
I…have feelings about that. Not all of them positive. I don’t like that idea that I’m being tugged around by some invisible fate. I don’t like the idea that I’ll have to fight and kill again. I’m just a doctor. I’m the simple kind of hero, the kind who heals the sick and looks for ways to make the common person’s life better. I don’t need the flashy titles, the power, the danger of adventuring. I’d rather leave that to someone strong and capable like Orda, or someone like Garran, who is looking for that kind of adventure.
I feel as though I don’t have much choice, however. I am out of time to continue writing for now, it is late and I have things to do tomorrow. But I will say this: Korvosa is changing, not for the better. This city, my home, is in chaos.

Week 1 Postgame Analysis & Owner Interviews
The Fighting Maria Chanders v. Father of Dragons:
I'm sure at some point Stephanie Haltiwanger has been on the receiving end of
Maria's belt, but this week it was Russell who tasted her leather as he laid
across MC's knee. After only one week, the "Father of Dragons" might consider
changing his name to "Christian Grey" because it's as if he was BEGGING to
feel the sting of punishment just one more time.
Make no mistake, this game started on shaky ground for the MC's after their
#1 and #2 picks (Mike Evans & Jay Ajayi) were sidelined by hurricane Irma.
But their shoes were easily filled by Ty Montgomery (GB, 18 pts) and DeAndre
Hopkins (Hou, 18 pts). Capped-off with surprising production from a 7th-round
replacement WR, Stefon Diggs (Min, 28 pts), and a HUGE game by The Jaguar
Defense (29 pts).
Father of Dragons simply failed to reap the reward of the owner's risky
line-up. For instance, it was a bold move to start Odell Beckham Jr.(0 pts)
when he was reportedly out for week one's match-up against Dallas. Also,
starting rookie Joe Mixon (4 pts) at the RB2 position when he is listed as
the #3 RB in Cinci below Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard.
After the game, The Fighting Maria Chandler's owner Beau Bailey was asked
about his teams performance without his first or second round draft picks.
Bailey commented, "Yeah, I'm really proud of this team. It shows their
'next-man-up' mentality going into this season, and now we'll start preparing
for the Whitley's."
Final Score The Fighting Maria Chandlers-126, Father of Dragons-78
===================
Jack in the Cox v. Little Red Fournette:
In Game #2, experts are saying that Little Red Fournette didn't have the
horse-power to catch up to the lead Jack in the Cox established in the very
first game of the NFL Season, and simply ran out of gas after Sunday's early
games.
Jack in the Cox jumped out to a HUGE lead when rookie RB and 4th-round draft
pick Kareem Hunt (KC) exposed the Patriot defense scoring 46 points. Turns
out, JC's owners literally slept on this sleeper telling our insiders they
didn't even find out about his performance until the next morning. Well sleep
no more on Kareem Hunt, this rookie from the University of Toledo has
officially rocketed up the ranks of RBs in the NFL.
But Hunt wasn't the only rookie RB to go off in week one of this match-up.
The namesake of Little Red Fournette, Leonard Fournette (Jax), pounced on the
board scoring 21 points against a very stout Houston defense. But the
rookie's first career TD was the only one scored by LRF's position players.
Our reporters spoke to the owners after the game. When asked about his team's
week 1, one of JC's owners tempered their expectations moving forward saying,
"It's only week one, but it's a good start." It seems as if they feel like
they have more to prove this year, and it's going to take more than one good
week to achieve their goals.
We asked one of the LRF's owners what they thought about the week and their
team going into week 2?
She simply responded, "Crapola."
Final Score: Jack in the Cox-131, Little Red Fournette-93 ===================
Team Swinderman v. Team Nichols
In the battle of First Overall Draft Pick vs. Second Overall Autodraft Pick,
the owner of Team Swinderman's frustrations have nearly reached a feverpitch.
The first pick in a draft is very valuable. A few years ago, then
commissioner Caroline Glazebrook parlayed that pick into a championship. So
to see Le'Veon Bell (Pit, RB), who has more apostrophes in his first name
than TDs this season, only score 7 points left at least one of the owners
from Team Swinderman rather frustrated. Add that to their second and third
round picks (Lamar Miller, RB, Hou & Tom Brady, QB, NE) and the top three
picks of this promising team only scored a combined 30 points.
We asked one of the owners if she had anything to say about her team's week 1
showing. She did. She said, "Yeah, they sucked. I want to redraft. This is
bulls__."
We overheard her later as she took a go the Marital Blitz commissioner
saying, "I've never had a team score that low. Even my bench sucks. This is
your fault!"
Our league insiders tell us they don't think any fines will be handed down
following the confrontation. As a matter of fact, they said the commish
simply smiled, winked at her, then slowly reeled up his middle finger as if
it were a Sunday morning fishing trip. Then coyly mouthed, "O-S-U blows" as
the crazed owner was carried away crying, "I play to win!"
If there is any silver-lining to Team Swinderman's year it comes at a cost to
Team Nichols: at least Team Swinderman's first round pick will survive to
play another week.
While this game is a big win for Team Nichols to start the season, it comes
at the cost of the second overall draft pick, David Johnson (RB, Ari).
Johnson was drafted with extremely high expectations of productivity, but
after suffering a wrist injury in the third quarter, he did not return. Team
Nichols was later informed Johnson dislocated his left wrist which will
require surgery and will be forced to miss the next 8-12 weeks of action.
After the game, the ownership of Team Nichols had an optimistic perspective
of their team simply saying, "Auto-draft. 1st round pick gets hurt. Still
drops 100."
Final Score: Team Swinderman-70, Team Nichols-100 ===================
Team Whitley v. Game of Jones
In the closest match-up of the week, Game of Jones was able to fend off a
late surge from Team Whitley in Monday Night's late game to secure a victory
in a very well fought match.
Our insiders reported one of the owners of Team Whitley was looking to make
some roster moves in the coming weeks after witnessing the poor performance
in their early games, specifically when asked if they were going to carry
three QBs into week 1, saying, "As of now...[the] struggle is real this
week."
But Team Whitley's optimism was palpable heading into the last game of the
week. Their ownership sent out a press release saying, "We like to start at
rock bottom Week 1, but we're still waiting on a Melvin Gordon Miracle
tonight."
It is that type of confidence in their players that led first round draft
pick, Melvin Gorden (RB, LAC), to such a strong week scoring 18 points.
Unfortunately, Demaryius Thomas (WR, Den) wasn't able to keep up his side of
the offense only scoring 11 points.
It was obvious that Game of Jones had a better line-up than Team Whitley, but
moving forward, depth could haunt the two owners of Game of Jones.
Looking to get DeVante Parker (WR, Mia) back from a hurricane-induced bye-
week, and waiting on Doug Martin (RB, TB) to fulfill his three-game
suspension, Game of Jones will be looking to bolster their bench with some
roster moves over the next few weeks.
For example, they had three players (McFadden, Dal RB, Rawls, Sea RB, and
Henry, Lac TE) on their bench who combined scored less points than their
kicker, Adam Vinatieri (2 pts).
As the week of games came to a close, our beat-writer in the field got a
chance to speak with Alicia Walters, one of the owners of Game of Jones,
about their week against Team Whitley and moving forward. She said, "We are
pleased with our Week 1 performance. We dropped a few balls that we wish
we could get back, but it was like we were playing the Jets this weekend, so
we didn't have to be our best. We need to continue to get better and trust the
process."
Final Score: Team Whitley-77, Game of Jones-101 ===================
***WEEK ONE GAME OF THE WEEK*** Sleeping w/the Commissioner v. That's What She Said aka "The Battle of the Bedroom"
By far the most intriguing match-up of Week 1 was a subway series between
two owners who are married to one another. The past three seasons we have
had to wait until Week 2 to get this game, but this year our appetites were
spared and these two went head-2-head to kick off the 2017 season.
TWSS won their first ever meeting back in 2014 by the score of 106-94, but
was blown away in 2015 when SwtC avenged their embarassment 92-58. In
2016, SwtC retained the title Bedroom Belt in a bloody shootout 142-127.
We have become so accustomed to this great rivalry game, but this year,
That's What She Said had too many weapons for Sleeping w/the
Commissioner to ward off.
After witnessing the superiority of TWSS's first round draft pick, Antonio
Brown (WR, Pit)(29 pts), and QB Matt Ryan (Atl)(23 pts), and SwtC's inability
to respond, there wasn't much left ponder "what ifs..."
SwtC's TE, Jimmy Graham (Sea), opened the season looking to regain his
production since leaving New Orleans, but failed only scoring 3 points.
Marshawn Lynch was believed to be healthy and able to rebrand himself as the
premiere RB in Oakland, but failed only scoring 9 points. Even his own
favorite team's defense (Atl) could not help their owner overcome a loss only
scoring 5 points against a very poor Chicago team. Which left SwtC's Stephan
Glazebrook handing over the Battle of the Bedroom Belt late Monday night.
After the game, our reporters were in the press conference and got to hear
from the owner of SwtCs, Stephan Glazebrook. Disappointment surrounded the
young executive as he took responsibility for his teams lack of production.
However, he promised change was-a-comin', saying, "I would say that, as their
coach, I've failed. However, if they don't perform better this week, I'll be
handing out pink slips to their sorry asses."
As one defeated Glazebrook left the press room and one elated Glazebrook
entered, they exchanged fist bumps and the owner of TWSS patted S
Glazebrook on the butt and told him to keep his head up.
Once TWSS owner Caroline Glazebrook took to the podium, her assistants told
the press she would only be taking one question so she could return to
celebrate with her team. A Fox Sports One reporter asked what she thought of
her team's victory.
She spoke confidently, "No surprise here." And she dropped the mic and
kicked through the doors to a raucous locker room celebration.
Final Score Sleeping w/the Commissioner-105, That's What She Said-135

Prompt 29: Post-MJ, Growing Together. Peeta is finally showing his affection and love for Katniss as they heal and reconnect. Katniss, being Katniss, seems to act like she doesn't appreciate this, and is less than enthused. Peeta, taking this like an adult, stops showing her with the affection and tries to show her his love in other ways. Katniss, however, does not appreciate him stopping those things and set out to try and get him to continue it again because she misses it. [submitted by @albinokittens300]
Prompt 30: When Prim needs a bone marrow reconstitution that can only be accomplished via genetic matched umbilical stem cell transplantation, Mrs E confesses that the baker is Prim’s father.
