The Redbridge Hunts, Chapter 6
Tumblr media
‘Have you seen this?’ Loki snarled as he slammed a newspaper down on the table in the teacher’s lounge.
It was Friday morning, before the human teachers and Claire had arrived.
‘What’s happened?’ Hannibal frowned as Severus leaned forward and grabbed the paper to read aloud.
‘Two young women found dead last night down Oak Alley, police say they aren’t sure of the cause of death yet, but they were found with large chunks of flesh torn out of their necks. It’s unsure if this is part of the cause of death or if wild dogs got to the bodies before they were found.’ Severus trailed off and looked at everyone.
‘I wonder who that could have been.’ Matt sighed and ran a hand down his face.
‘Why does he keep doing this? There’s no need to be killing them, we don’t need to do that!’ Loki almost shouted as he paced back and fore.
‘I know it’s difficult for some vampires to let go of the old traditional ways, but even for that the humans don’t need to be killed. Especially if they were drunk anyway, there’s so many options to get our fill without resorting to that manner.’ Jessica said.
‘Exactly, but we know he enjoys the torture aspect of it all, it’s just one big power trip to him.’ Loki snarled.
‘Are we sure it’s him?’ David asked.
‘Of course, it is. Who else would be so sadistic to tear their flesh off? That’s one of his signature marks.’ Loki snapped.
‘Calm down, Loki. You know none of us here condone that level of torture, we’re not disagreeing with you.’ Severus said calmly.
Loki, far from calm, wasn’t sure if he would be able to control himself if he saw Chris today. He hoped he would keep himself scarce, as he often did.
‘Just try and focus on keeping Claire safe, he showed far too much interest in her last night.’ David chimed in with.
‘In her defence though, I could tell she felt a little uncomfortable with him. She seems to be most comfortable around you, Loki. Plus, the way her eyes lit up a little every time you went near her, I think you’re not the only one that’s smitten.’ Jessica said with a smile.
Loki abruptly stopped pacing and stared at Jessica with his eyebrows up. ‘Really?’
Jessica nodded.
‘Well… she has spent the most time with me, so it would make sense she’s more comfortable around me.’ He shrugged, looking a little bit bashful.
‘Speak of the devil, Claire and Jeremy are coming.’ David said as his nostrils flared a little.
Loki quickly grabbed the newspaper and tossed it in the bin. He wasn’t sure if he’d be able to contain his rage even talking about it with humans. He managed to take a few deep breaths before Claire and Jeremy entered, he forced on a smile but it turned into a genuine one when Claire entered and her eyes instantly landed on him, smiling widely.
For the first time, he felt his heart swell with happiness and adoration instead of just the cravings of lust and thirst he usually felt…
-
That night, Claire made her way through the trees once again, she had her flashlight on already so she could see better. The light bounced off the bright white snow, making her have to squint a little, but still better than nothing.
She could hear some fluttering up above her, but she knew it would just be the bats so remained calm. She had peppermint spray in her pocket, she’d read that bats weren’t fond of the smell, so if one tried getting all up in her business again, she’d give it a spray.
When she got a little further than the previous night she’d tried, she came across a gap in the fence that looked to have been cut with wire cutters, though large enough of a gap to get through.
‘Bingo!’
She had to get down on her hands and knees to crawl through the hole, which wasn’t the best thing to be doing in the snow, but as she began crawling forward the back of her jacket got caught in the fence.
‘Shit.’ Claire struggled to get herself free, the wet and cold started to seep through her trousers around her knees. What made things worse though, she could hear faint crunching in the snow, slowly getting louder and louder.
Her heart started drumming so hard in her chest, she thought it would burst at any moment. She felt so foolish for coming here alone again, certain she was going to die, she should have listened to Loki.
The footsteps were even louder now, coming so close… She’d never been so frightened in her entire life.
‘What are you doing crawling around in the snow?’ Came a sultry voice from behind her.
‘LOKI?’ She screeched, craning her neck to look round at the handsome man towering over her from behind, his hands buried deep in the pockets of his long coat. If her legs and hands weren’t so cold, she would’ve found being stuck in this position before her boss to be rather… interesting.
‘Do you need a hand?’ Loki couldn’t withhold a smirk at her predicament.
Don’t think dirty thoughts, don’t think dirty thoughts.
‘Ya think?’ Claire huffed.
Loki chuckled as he bent over and unhooked the bit of wire that clung to her jacket, as soon as he freed her, she crawled forward and clambered quickly up to her feet and wiped down her trousers.
‘Not my finest hour.’ She sighed.
‘No, I’d say not.’ Loki folded his arms over his chest.
Claire found herself staring at him for a little bit too long. He looked so handsomely cosy, she just wanted to be wrapped up in his big coat with him… She shook her head and snapped out of her thoughts, she had to work with this guy, she couldn’t be thinking that way about him.
‘What are you doing here?’ Claire asked.
‘Rescuing you, and by the looks of it I got here at the right time. Or you’d be frozen solid by morning.’ He said, slightly amused.
Claire rolled her eyes. ‘Ok, ok. Yeah, I've been pretty stupid coming here again on my own. But hey, I’m through the fence, so I’m going to go check it out.’
‘Not on your own you’re not.’
‘I’d like to see you get through that hole.’ Claire laughed and turned around, she began walking towards the river. She heard a brief snapping sound that made her spin around, her eyes widened as Loki had made the hole bigger and simply crouched down a little to squeeze through.
‘Jesus. How strong are you to break the fence like that?’ She squeaked.
Loki smirked as he walked up to her, then continued on past her. ‘I work out a lot.’ He commented.
Claire shook her head and jogged to catch up with him.
‘Hey, how did you know I’d be here at this time?’ She asked as she fell into step beside him.
‘I figured you’d be waiting till dark, but also not coming out too late as you said earlier you were tired after the late-night last night.’ Loki said proudly.
‘I guess being a teacher makes you super observant of everyone around you.’ Claire laughed.
‘Indeed.’ Loki chuckled. ‘I also figured after the murder of those two young women last night, it wasn’t a good idea that you were out here on your own.’ He said seriously.
‘Yeah.’ Claire said sadly. ‘That sounded pretty rough, those poor girls.’
‘It did. I certainly don’t want anything like that to happen to you, and since you seem rather reckless about your own safety, I figured I better do the job.’ He said as he raised an eyebrow at her.
‘Alright, alright, Sir. Treating me like a student.’ Claire said teasingly.
‘You think that is my naughty student voice? I could go much scarier if that’s what you’d prefer, darling.’ He grinned widely at her.
‘Maybe another time, I’m frozen. Let’s get this figured out so we can go home.’ Claire giggled as she pulled her jacket in tighter around herself.
Loki frowned and took off his leather gloves. ‘Here, put these on. Yours must be soaked through.’
‘No, then you’ll get cold.’ She argued.
‘I’ve not been crawling around in the snow, my hands will be fine. Put them on.’ He said firmly and shoved his gloves at her.
‘Ok, thanks.’ She pulled off her own wool gloves and tucked them into her pocket, then slipped on Loki’s leather gloves. They were too big, but they certainly did the trick compared to her own damp ones.
‘I draw the line at giving you my trousers though.’
Claire burst out laughing and nudged him with her elbow. ‘Yeah, I’d rather my eyes didn’t burn at the sight of you in your undies.’
Loki mocked a gasp and nudged her back. ‘Who said I wear undies?’
They both laughed as they reached the river and began walking alongside. Loki wasn’t sure what his dad had planned, but he certainly hoped there would be something there that would put an end to her risky intrigue.
After walking for around half a mile, they came across a pile of old tubs lying at the side of the water, no lids and some of the tubs were broken. When they got closer, Claire aimed her torch at the tubs and her eyes widened. They were large chemical containers that farmers would use, lots of them littered the immediate area, right at the water’s edge.
‘So… it has just been chemicals getting into the water. There are so many.’ Claire gasped.
Loki felt relief flood through him. ‘Seems so. There’s a lot here, I suspect a farmer uses this area as his dumping ground every so often. Would explain why it just happens once a year or so.’ Loki hummed.
‘Doesn’t explain the red colour though, surely this would just make the water look oily or off... but, red?’
‘Look.’ Loki pointed towards a large bottle. Claire shone the torch onto it. ‘It’s red dye. Farmers often use a dye, usually blue but they can get other colours too, so they can see where they’ve already sprayed. It saves over spraying, it’s a harmless product, but you only need a tiny amount for it to be effective when mixed with a liquid. It’s a perfect explanation as to why the water would turn red for a while.’
Claire just stared at it all in disbelief.
‘Are you ok?’ Loki asked.
‘Yeah… I just... I don’t know. I kind of feel a little disappointed, not going to lie.’ Claire admitted sheepishly.
‘Disappointed?’
‘Yeah. I mean, I don’t really know what I had hoped to find. I guess it's just the confirmation that there is a reasonable explanation for it all has kind of sucked the fun out of it.’ She shrugged.
Loki smiled softly. ‘You were the one adamant to come and investigate, maybe some things are better left unknown and to the imagination.’
‘Yeah, I know… Oh well, at least we now know there’s no vampires running around.’ She laughed.
‘True…’ Loki nodded. ‘Come on, let’s get going. You’re shivering.’ Loki said worriedly as he gently took hold of her elbow and began to guide her back.
Claire didn’t even realise she had been shivering until he pointed it out. By the time they got back to the park, her whole body shook as she just couldn’t get warm because of her wet trousers.
‘My place is just across the road over there, why don’t you come in and get warmed up by the fire, I’ll fish out some dry trousers to get you home in.’ Loki offered as he pointed to a street just across the road from the park.
‘I’m only a ten-minute walk from here, I don’t want to ruin your night any further.’ Claire said while her teeth chattered.
‘Ten more minutes like this might make you ill. You’re not ruining my night, at all. I chose to come with you, remember?’
‘True… ok, I’ll come and warm up. A nice fire does sound so good right now.’ Claire smiled.
Loki felt relieved that she agreed, because of course he wouldn’t force her to come in. Though he genuinely was concerned about how cold she was and he definitely didn’t want her getting ill.
Taking her to his place would be difficult for him, as her smell would be in his home, and it would likely linger for a day or so, which would drive him nuts over the weekend.
They were across at Loki’s house in less than a minute, the thought of a warm fire was a strong pull for Claire. She was surprised to see the size of his house, a Georgian style home, identical to the rest of the street, it had two floors and looked to have multiple bedrooms.
‘Luckily I started the fire before I left and put plenty of logs on, so it should be cosy enough.’ Loki said as he unlocked the front door and stepped just inside before turning sideways and motioning for her to come in with an outstretched arm.

CP- declines the hotel – H- advises letting the market on a lease of 21 years at a fixed rent – likes Mr. Gray’s plan for the exchange etc only afraid there is not room enough – will think it over and give me a birds’ eye sort of perspective view of the 2 markets exchange buildings and the whole of the ground laid out – gave him away with him the ground plan of Northgate and G-‘s 2 sketches the exchange pile, and the [streeting]- H- advised that if C- should come to terms for the coaches, I should have a person to overlook his coachbooks to see what the 9 coaches would be worth – H- to find the person to do this – Mr. Dobson the great coach account auditor at York would overlook the books and collect the facts and Kemplay of Leeds the auditor general as it were son to Kemplay the school master (has £400 a year for this which takes him but little time) and a man of £800 to £1000 a year independence would vale the custom for me to oblige Mr. H- not a man to do it for money – H- if I wanted to apply to him by letter will be till next Monday morning at the house of ‘Mr. James Hacking, Enfield, near Blackbrune’ (I rather think this Hacking is uncle to Mr. Husband) – and will pass thro’ Bradford per coach and be at the Talbot Inn there at 5pm. on Monday evening next – Messrs. Harper and G- together (after H- had had Hainsworth on his Harper’s leaving me at 3) setting out the East tower so that the foundations can be laid and the cellar done, and setting out the back Lodge till H- went away at a little before 5 – I out from 3 to 7 20 about but chiefly with Sam and Jack planting the ½ doz. thorns and 1 Ragland oak – Zebedee fetched up Booths’ 2 long timbers from the meer to the haybarn for wall-plates – Hainsworth came to me about 6 50 with a long bill for stones – said it must be checked by Mr. Booth – mentioned his not coming to the rent day as a thing that must not occur again – and he promised it should not – then mentioned the market – TG- having spoken about it – I suppose a deputation coming about it – mentioned the names of Mr. Whitley and old Mr. Mitchell – H- seemed to know nothing about it – said I had my own plans but would oblige the town if I could – told H- to get me 2 tenants for my 2 fields – 2 votes – A- and I were determined to have voters – would not rest till we had about 50 – H- much pleased – entering upon a long recital of our praises at the conservative association now consisting 600 members – wanted a room for general meetings that would hold one thousand people – on coming in wrote and sent by Frank (who went this morning to inquire if Thomas Greenwood would hire him as carter) my note to ‘Messrs. Parker and Adam solicitors H-x’ saying that after my note of last night perhaps it was hardly necessary to say I should be much obliged to Mr. P- to communicate with C- and lay his proposal before me, as it seemed not impossible some terms might be come to – dinner at 7 40 – coffee – A- very agreeable and sat long at table and afterwards at coffee till we both came upstairs together at 10 5 and she sat with me in the blue room 20 minutes or more – then wrote all the above of today till 11 55 very fine day F57° at 10 5 pm

“you only want me when i’m taken” pt5
sirius raised his head from remus’ chest when his brother passed quickly through the gryffindor common room with his head low. he sat up, looking between the closing portrait hole and the stairs up to the dorm.
“go see your brother” remus said, sitting up behind him.
“which one?” sirius asked, turning to face his boyfriend.
he leant forward, hoping to land comfortably in the warmth of remus’ jumper but instead felt two of remus’ fingers slip under his chin, forcing eye contact. remus raised a single eyebrow and sirius exhaled, climbing out of his position within remus’ limbs.
out in the corridor, sirius paused. he turned to the fat lady expectantly.
“which way did regulus go?” he asked her.
she looked down at him, her thin, pink lips forming a pout when she saw his skinny black jeans and half tucked-in david bowie t-shirt. the sleeves came down a little further than they were supposed to for a t-shirt, but as it was his boyfriend’s, sirius couldn’t really complain.
she raised her right eyebrow, tilting her head accordingly as she did so.
“finally” sirius mumbled to himself. “thank you.”
sirius wandered the corridor slowly, checking each classroom he passed. he huffed, finding each one empty. he crossed to the other side of the school, the magical staircases taking him the long way round.
he vaguely remembered regulus telling him that there was an abandoned classroom on the far side of the fifth floor so the gryffindor beater headed in that direction. he was quickly distracted however, by the sound of slight snoring. sirius looked around, unsure of where the sound was coming from.
his grey eyes narrowed as they landed on the wooden door of a small classroom. the metal handle was cold and refused to budge when he turned it. he threw himself against it but the old oak held firm in the wake of his repeated attempts.
eventually conceding, sirius took out his wand, muttering a quick “alohomora.” he heard the metal lock and invisible key knocking against each other and when the creaking stopped he carefully pushed open the door.
the classroom was dark and it took a moment for sirius’ eyes to adjust to the change. he blinked, cocking his head like a dog as he heard the slight groaning noise again. sirius rolled his eyes as he identified the source of the sound.
a head of ginger waves was splayed out over the floor and two empty bottles of firewhiskey and one of white wine were lying not too far from lily evan’s still body. trying his best to be quiet, sirius made his way over to her. he slipped between the rows of desks and knelt down. he was relieved to see the slow, steady movements of her chest as he got closer.
“lily? hey, evans!”
sirius raised his voice and lily flinched somewhat, lifting her arms to cover her ears and block the noise.
“don’t ignore me - you should be grateful i’m even talking to you” sirius told her. “now sit up.”
lily raised her head from the floor, the green eyes taking a while to focus. the features of sirius black’s eventually came into view but they weren’t as soft as they normally were. his jawline seemed more prominent, as though it was clenched as he looked down at her.
she pushed herself up into a sitting position, crossing her legs as she carefully scanned his face for any possible hint for where the conversation was about to go.
“get a grip of yourself” sirius told her harshly. “a, it’s almost midday and you’re still in your clothes from last night, and b, keep your libido in check.”
lily opened her mouth to reply, but found it dry, almost painfully so. she coughed, her eyes watering as she regained control of her breathing.
“i didn’t mean to. sirius, i-”
“i don’t care” sirius said bluntly, cutting her off. “it’s not me you need to apologise to.”
“apologise?”
“i can think of a couple of people that deserve an apology.”
sirius stood up, picking up the discarded bottles, surprised to find some liquid still in one of them. he looked down at lily disdainfully before crossing the room and leaving. she felt small being on the receiving end of sirius’ cold stare. she tucked her knees up under her chin, rocking back and forth as she contemplated what sirius had just said.
she sighed, hating to admit that he’d been right, though grateful he wasn’t there so she’d have to say it to his face. the ego inflation would be exponential if that was to happen. using the wall to support her, lily stood up, wobbling in her heels. she immediately reached down to undo the straps. the floor was cold, the thin layer of carpet that covered the stone corridors having been worn to within an inch of its life by the thousands of pairs of feet that used the corridors daily. she slowly started making her way back to gryffindor tower, her head pounding.
remus was still sat on the faded red armchair, his toes curling in the direction of the warm fire. he bent them slowly, feeling each joint crack satisfyingly. once all ten had been clicked, he stood up, heading towards the stone steps that spiralled up to the gryffindor dorms.
remus carefully folded the corner of his page and placed his book down on the table next to the arm of the sofa. as he climbed each step, the sound of crying became more distinct. when remus knocked on the dormitory door he heard a gasp and pushed the door open.
his eyebrows drew together briefly as he scanned the empty room before the sound of sniffling returned. remus headed straight for the bathroom, not expecting to find james potter slumped against the tiled wall with his head leant back.
tear tracks had clearly marked his cheeks, and remus unraveled part of the nearby toilet roll, offering it to his friend.
remus silently joined his friend on the floor, waiting for james to start talking. he didn’t - he just let his head fall onto remus’ shoulder, the smell of the coffee remus had drunk at breakfast still hanging in the air around him. remus looked down at the usually smiling quidditch captain, noticing how the dark eyes had lost their excitement and hope.
after ten minutes of silence, james sat up with a large sniff, making his splutter slightly.
“he won’t listen to me” james whispered. “and i don’t know what to do.”
remus exhaled, fiddling with a loose thread at the hem of his jumper.
“maybe he needs time?” remus suggested. “it’s a lot for him to process.”
“but there’s nothing to process” james said a little louder than he’d intended. “if he’d just listen to me, he’d know that there’s nothing that needs to be processed because it wasn’t my fault.”
“hey” remus said, “i know that, but regulus was already insecure about your past feelings for lily and now he feels that he was right all along - that you never really stopped liking her.”
“b-but why would i get into a relationship with him if i still liked her?” james asked, not finding it within himself to even say lily’s name.
remus shrugged nonchalantly: “people like to play games.”
“well i don’t” james huffed. “other than quidditch, obviously.”
remus smiled softly.
“do you want to go get some lunch?”
“what i want is for regulus to talk to me, or at the very least listen” james said, standing up suddenly and leaving remus on the bathroom floor.
stood facing his open wardrobe, james stared blankly at the hangers of clothes, his fingers running through the different materials. he chose an old rugby shirt, the blue and red faded slightly from the amount of washes it had been through.
having not worn it for so long, the smell of his mother’s washing powder was still on it, and as he yanked it over his head, he closed his eyes, letting the comforting smell of home wash over him.
“remus?” james called over his shoulder, already halfway out the door, “i’m going down for lunch.”
“okay, see you there” remus replied, quickly turning away from the mirror and leaving the bathroom.
he returned the toilet roll to its rightful place before following james out of the dorm.
the staircase up to the dorms was thin and winding as it followed the shape of gryffindor tower. with her head still feeling heavy, lily’s chin was practically in her chest as she concentrated on keeping on putting one foot in front of the other.
she straightened up when she saw a pair of what used to be white converse appear in her field of vision. her eyes immediately found james’. she leant back into the wall as he stared at her momentarily before brushing past her. he knocked into her, not bothering to turn back and apologise.
she sighed, watching him disappear down the rest of the steps without looking back. remus had watched their interaction from the top of the staircase, and slowly began making his way down, only stopping when lily grabbed his wrist.
remus looked down at the contact disdainfully and lily quickly retracted her hand.
“help me fix this” she implored, looking up into the caramel-speckled eyes for any sign of support. “please, remus.”
“i warned you” remus told her, watching her physically fold in on herself at his words. “i told you to stay out their relationship and you didn’t. this is your mess.”
“i didn’t mean to make a mess” lily said, stepping to the side as remus attempted to move past her.
“yeah but that’s what’s happened, isn’t it?”
remus raised a single eyebrow, challenging her to disagree. lily moved out the way, accepting remus’ words. he re-entered the common room, finding a three small first years crammed into the armchair he had been sat in earlier. the blonde girl nervously tapped her friend’s knee to get her start moving as remus approached.
“it’s alright” he assured them. “stay where you are.”
he picked up the book he’d left on the coffee table and left the common room, heading in the direction of the great hall.
having peered through the window of every classroom on the fifth floor, sirius was about to give in to the noises his stomach had been making for the past five minutes before his eyes landed on the back of a dark head leant against a window.
he tapped his knuckle against the glass his brother was leaning, smiling to himself when regulus jumped, a pale hand flying up over his heart. he immediately lowered it, instead offering his older brother a slender middle finger.
sirius grinned, reaching for the door handle. he frowned, finding it locked. regulus slid off the counter that ran along the length of the back wall of the classroom and unlocked the door.
“you alright?” regulus asked, suspicious of his brother’s intentions.
“i’m supposed to be asking you that” sirius told him. “so, are you alright?”
regulus turned his back on sirius, heading back to the counter. he perched on the end, fiddling with the silver rings on his fingers.
“hey” sirius said softly, moving to sit next to his brother. “whatever you’re feeling is completely valid. and that includes anger.”
regulus turned to face him, tears have been building up for the past couple of minutes. as soon as sirius opened his arms regulus’ head fell heavily into the embrace.
“i just really thought i was enough, you know?” regulus said quietly, some of his words lost into the material of sirius’ t-shirt.
sirius pulled away, looking at the tears running down regulus’ face.
“you are enough reg. i promise you, you’re more than enough. but you should know that lily instigated it - james didn’t want it. he wants you; he chose you.”
“only as a backup though” regulus sniffed, rubbing the back of his hand across his nose in a way his parents would not approve of.
“you’re not a backup.”
“yeah i am” regulus said, his tone suddenly cold. “the backup relationship, the backup heir. i don’t actually have a purpose.”
“shut up.” regulus raised his eyebrows at the harshness of his brother’s words. “i just mean, you have value, you know? so stop talking like you don’t.”
sirius raised an eyebrow and regulus nodded, a move that pleased sirius.
“i should probably talk to him, shouldn’t i?” regulus asked the room, not really intending to address sirius.
sirius shrugged.
“if you need time you don’t have to rush anything. you don’t want to say anything you might later regret.”
regulus couldn’t help the way the corners of his lips had started to rise.
“when did you become so wise and philosophical?”
sirius punched regulus’ arm, a grin on his face. regulus shuffled across the counter, crossing his legs as he adjusted himself so he was now sat opposite his brother. he leant forward, his forehead hitting sirius’ chest. he quickly retracted it with a giggle.
“was that your stomach?” he asked, his smile spreading as sirius’ cheeks burned.
“i’m hungry, okay?” sirius said, jumping off the counter and heading for the door. “let’s go get lunch.”
regulus followed his brother back out into the corridor, not realising how much the door blocked out noise. the sound of people moving around the castle, laughing and talking, reached his ears. he stopped at the top of a staircase, watching amusedly as a couple leant back, too lost in their moment to realise that they were leaning on a suit of armour that quickly collapsed under their combined weight.
he shook his head with a slight smile at his lips, before catching up with sirius who was waiting at the bottom of the stairs.
they walked to the great hall in silence, but in the entrance hall just before they went their separate ways to their respective house tables, sirius gently squeezed regulus’ hand. regulus smiled up at him, before watching sirius slip onto the gryffindor bench next to james.
regulus took a deep breath before heading for the deserted end of the slytherin table. he prodded his shepherd’s pie disinterestedly, and looked up, scanning the table on the furthest side of the hall for the gryffindor quidditch captain. james’ eyes were already on him, watching him not eating the food on his plate.
when james smiled at him, regulus couldn’t help the feeling of warmth that washed over him at james’ simple gesture. he hated it; he wanted to be able to stay mad but the dimples that appeared on james’ face were having such an effect on the slytherin seeker that he couldn’t help but smile back.

 April 2019
“Hey honey, you ok?” Frank juggled his phone, pinning it between his ear and his shoulder as he leaned over his computer in the office, scanning the database on the screen for a filter part they needed to order.
“No, I mean yes! I’ve just heard some awesome news!”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, so you remember the guy that bought the house that backs onto the yard when Old Man River died…” “That wasn’t his name.” Frank chuckled “It was Mr Morris.”
“He called himself River, it was funny and suited him. Anyway, that’s not the point. You know the guy who bought it…guess what I found out before?”
Frank stopped what he was doing and straightened up. He didn’t like that dick, one bit. When Mr Morris had died at the start of the year, Fliss had been quite upset about the news as the old man had been very friendly to her, often popping in for a cup of tea a few afternoons a week for some company. Mr Morris’ son had sold the house without them even knowing it had gone on the market, which was a shame as it would have been perfect for them given the location. The guy who had bought it, Frank didn’t even know his name, nor did he care because he was a dick and a pervert to boot. The way he looked at Fliss made Frank want to punch his face in.
“What’s Douchey Mc Douchebag done now?”
“You’re so childish.” she scoffed “Anyway, I was only commenting to Joanne last night that we haven’t seen him for like a month and she went home and mentioned it to her dad who works with some other guy in the property development business and the long and short of it is he’s gone bankrupt Frank!”
Frank laughed loudly “Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, babe!”
“I know right!” Fliss voice was gathering pace and pitch, the way it always did when she was excited. “So literally about half hour after she’s told me this, someone turns up and there’s a For Sale sign outside, the house is on the market!”
Ok now he was interested. Frank could picture the look of excitement on her face as she spoke to him and he felt the smile cross his face “No shit?”
“Yeah, I’ll send you the website to look at the photos but…oh God, it would be perfect! Some of it is really nice, some of it needs decorating but…”
“Ok, well, why don’t you call the realtor? Arrange a viewing” he said “Hopefully you won’t puke halfway round this one.”
“Ok, first off that wasn’t my fault. Bean objected to the smell. Who the fuck cooks eggs the day they know they have someone coming to view their house?” her indignant tone made Frank chuckle “And second off…”she paused “I already did. He said he can meet us at half 12.”
“Half 12? As in lunch time? Today?” Frank frowned.
“I know I just really don’t want to miss out on this one Frank, and you said you were gonna come up here for lunch and-”
“Ok, ok.” Frank sighed “I’ll shuffle some stuff around, work a little later tonight and take an extra half hour.”
“I love you.” she replied and he could hear the smile in her voice.
“Good job I love you too.” he said back gruffly “Because you’re a pain in my ass.”
He bid her goodbye and just as he was looking at the rota to make sure there were enough staff in to cope if he took a longer lunch, his phone beeped. He clicked through to the link Fliss had sent him and had a scan through the photos. To be fair the house didn’t look in too bad condition. It was deceptive from the outside, looked like a small farmhouse but they knew thanks to the extension Douchebag had put on the back it now formed an L shape and from the look of it, was pretty spacious. The kitchen was new, the main bathroom was new so the big work looked like it had been mostly done. The décor in some of the rooms was really old fashioned, especially the hallway you and the front reception room, but that was all cosmetic. What really grabbed him was the price. It was up for just over 320 thousand, which was a fucking steal considering the size, location, the garden and the garage/outhouse it came with.
“You ok Frank?”
He looked up and smiled as Alan, his boss walked in to the office. “Yeah, sorry, Fliss has found a house and managed to book a viewing for lunch time. Fucking 7th one in 2 weeks.”
Alan snorted “Keeping you on your toes I see?”
“Well I gotta say, this one’s looking pretty good. It’s the house that backs onto our Yard out in Pinellas Park.” Frank explained “It was sold not even 6 months ago to a developer and he’s apparently gone bankrupt so put it back on the market.”
“Huh.” Alan smiled “Sounds like it was meant to be. Take it you’re going then?”
“Yeah, Charlie and Gary are in all afternoon. I thought I could take an extra half hour, work it back tonight or…”
“Frank, when was the last time you actually took a full hour for your lunch and didn’t cut it short by 10 or 15?” Alan looked at him.
Frank hesitated “Yeah, but that’s-”
“No buts.” Alan shook his head. “Do what you gotta do.”
“Thanks Alan.” Frank smiled, “I appreciate it.”
Alan waved away his gratitude before he dropped into the chair on the opposite side of Frank’s small desk and gestured for Frank to sit down.
“I wanted to talk to you in person, before the news gets out. I’m looking at retiring Frank, fully this time.”
“That’s good news, for you I mean.” Frank smiled, taking his seat. “You must be happy?”
“Kinda bitter sweet.” He shrugged “But I hit 70 this year and bout time I let it all go. Bill’s already chomping at the bit to book damned fishing trips so...it’ll be nice to step back. But I wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Shoot.”
“My son, James is going to be taking over, that won’t come as any surprise to you as you’ve seen him knocking around a bit and he likes you.”
“Good to know I’m not going to be out on my ass.” Frank smiled, breathing out a little.
“No, not a chance. I wouldn’t allow it.” Alan said “I’ll still be the owner, just stepping back from major decision making and day to day running. Anyway, the point is Frank, James needs a deputy. He is young and a little inexperienced. I’ve seen how quickly over the last year you’ve picked up rotas, staffing issues, dealt with the stock takes, haggled with the supply chain…I wondered if you’d consider it.”
Frank blinked “You wanna make me deputy manager?”
“In a word, yes. And I know you got your hands full at the moment and they’ll be even more full when that boy of yours arrives but the changes won’t come into effect until the end of the year so we got plenty of time to work out the details.”
“Wow, I err…” Frank shook his head “I don’t know what to say.”
“I don’t need an answer now.” Alan said, “Take some time to consider it. Talk it over with Fliss.”
“I will, I’ll give it some thought.”
“Ok, well, that’s all I dropped in for.” Alan said, standing up, groaning a little “Did you just hear my damned knees click?”
Frank laughed and shook his head “No, but to be honest mine click too so I wouldn’t worry about it.”
“Getting old sucks.” Alan said, shaking his head “I tell ya, the minute I can’t enjoy the simple things in life, put a bullet in my head.”
Frank snorted as Alan shot him a wink and left him to his thoughts.
******* Frank glanced down at the wooden boards beneath his feet in the entrance hall. They were solid old wood, oak he thought, and with a clean and polish would look stunning. He looked up and saw Fliss talking animatedly to the realtor, a young man called David as he nodded and gestured to his left. Fliss opened the door and looked at Frank who followed her into the first reception room. It smelt musty, and there was an old sofa and threadbare carpet in the room but it was light and had a nice, airey feeling to it thanks to the large windows at the front of the house.
“New carpet and a bit of paint…” Frank mused nodding, “Be good as new.”
She nodded eagerly, her eyes shining a she looked around and nodded at the fire place “Really, in Florida?”
“It gets cold, as you know.” he teased “Besides, we just fill it with some of your million candles or whatever…”
She nudged him and they turned around, David watching them.
“So, you’re obviously in the older part of the house that hasn’t really been touched apart from upstairs.” he explained, “But if you follow me I’ll show you the extension which is all new and, well, to be honest, I think it’s stunning.”
The three of them moved back into the hall and through a door at the end which led into a huge open plan kitchen and living area. The kitchen was gorgeous. Sleek white units, modern appliances, marble tops, a huge breakfast bar. Douchebag had clearly spent a fortune doing this up. The floor was a light grey and white laminate which David pointed out was heavy wearing.  To the left of the kitchen area was a huge space where Frank could clearly picture their sofas and TV, and then just off that was a door which led into another smaller reception room, freshly painted and carpeted.  He was just pondering how they could turn that into a play room when Fliss gave a gasp and nudged Frank pointing to the large bay window at the back which had been converted into a seating nook of sorts. They made their way over and saw that the view extended right over their garden highlighting a small pool area which was surrounded by a low set of railings with a gate that were all painted a glossy black. The pool itself was sparklingly clean and clearly brand new.
“Oh wow… “ Fliss mumbled, looking at the sand stone tiles that surrounded the area and the rest of the garden.
“Yeah the rear garden loops in an L round the house” David said. “There’s a larger fence around this area to keep it private and separate from the land at the front that runs flush to the yard area.”
Frank’s hands dropping to her hips as he nodded to the right “Could extend that little patio area for a table and chairs, maybe build a brick BBQ. Couple of sun-loungers for that bit at the back of the pool.”
She nodded eagerly before they headed back into the hallway they’d entered into where the realtor showed them the little room that was to the right as you came in the door which held a number of shelves and coat hooks and a toilet and sink basin. They then headed up stairs to find 4 bedrooms. The master extended down the entire side of the house overlooking the main yard area of Sandybrook. It needed some work, the plaster and paint was peeling away in some areas, but Frank wasn’t worried at that. It was an easy job. What he was pleased to see was that the rest of it was in good condition. There was a brand new en-suite attached to it, housing a toilet, a huge shower and his and hers sinks. The room also had built in wardrobes and huge ceiling to floor bi-folding doors which opened up onto a small balcony. Douchebag had clearly been focussing on the big jobs first before he got into the cosmetics, which Frank had to give him credit for.
The main bathroom was in between the wall of their en-suite and the next bedroom, both situated at the back of the house over the extension and overlooking the fields belonging to the yard. The plaster was fresh in that bedroom but hadn’t been painted, again, not an issue, because Frank knew a certain little miss would be no doubt picking a colour as soon a she spotted this room.
“Bet Mary chooses this one.” Frank said, voicing his thoughts and Fliss nodded, smiling
“I would if the Master didn’t have that en-suite.” she grinned “Look at that view!”
“Yeah, who’d have thought you could work from home in the equestrian business” he chuckled as they then headed to the next bedroom on the opposite side of the landing. This was also rather large, but like the main part of the master bedroom, was clearly one of the original two bedrooms the house had and it needed some updating.
The 4th bedroom was a smaller one up a narrow set of stairs hidden by door in the hallway. It opened up into an attic room which tucked into the roof of the house.
The realtor then led them back down and the out to the outbuildings. There was a huge garage with a half- finished apartment of sorts above it that had been used as storage but could be easily a guest suite if they so wanted,  and then the thing Frank had really loved was the workshop off the side of the garage, accessed by a small door. It was musty and full of crap but was somewhere for him to store all his tools and work on any side projects he decided to pick up.
All in all Frank was finding it pretty damned hard to pick faults in the place.
As they headed back to the main house and Frank asked David politely to give them a moment to look around alone and he nodded eagerly before Frank and Fliss headed back into the house.
“I’m getting good vibes Sailor.” Fliss said as she turned round, looking at the kitchen, once more heading over to the bay window seat, “really good vibes.” she spun back to him and he smiled at the look on her face. “I mean, ok, a few rooms need decorating and there’s some finishing off bits to do all over but it’s nothing that dad can’t help with and I’m sure-“
At that she stopped dead, and gave a little gasp as her hand flew to her bump.
“You ok?” Frank stepped forward.
“Yeah he’s…” she swallowed “Bean’s kicking, Frankie! Quick!”
He reached out with his hand and she took it, pressing it to the side of her bump. After a second or two he felt something wriggle a little under his palm and he looked at Fliss, his face cracking into an open mouthed smile as he felt his son move for the first time.
“Lissy…” he swallowed his eyes misting over. “That’s…oh my God!”
“You should feel it from my POV!” Fliss smiled her own eyes glassy too.
Frank didn’t want to take his hand away. Instead, he kept moving his palm, tracking their baby’s movements when eventually they stopped.
“I think that means BB likes the house.” Fliss looked at him.
Frank scoffed, shaking his head. “BB’s Momma likes the house.”
“Doesn’t his Daddy?” she asked, her hands sliding round his neck.
“Yeah, his Daddy does.” he replied honestly in a low voice as he looked around the large room. “In fact, I like it a lot.”
“You think Mary will?”
“Are you kidding?” Frank snorted “Soon as she sees that view and that pool, she’ll be packing to move in straight away.”
“Suppose there’s only one way to find out.” Fliss smiled.
So they did. They brought Mary back the next day after school. She had squealed at the window seat, yelled about the pool and as she had shot upstairs and headed into the bedroom Frank had predicted she would like, given a jump for joy as she realised from the upstairs she had a view over the tall picket fencing that shielded the private area of the garden.
“I can see Monty!” she gleefully pointed out before turning to Frank and looking at him then to Fliss, her hands on her hips “If you don’t buy this house you’re a pair of dumbasses.”
The same sentiment was echoed by Bill when he turned up fifteen minutes or so later and walked around with Frank whilst Fliss and Mary headed to feed the horses. He did exactly the same thing he had done when they had looked at the apartment, pointed out what they needed to do, how long it should take them to do, rough estimates of cost. Plus, he also reminded Frank they were in a great position. They could buy the place and then give his months’ notice on the apartment meaning they could stay where they were until it was finished.
So that was it. Decision made. The next morning they went in with a cheeky offer, some twenty thou below the asking price which was rejected instantly. Then they upped their offer by five…then an additional three to total eight, with the fact that they were cash buyers and not in a chain a huge bargaining chip.
It was later that evening, just after they had finished dinner when the realtor called back.
“Evening Mr Adler, ok so…I have spoken to the vendor. He says if you can up your offer by another two thousand then you’ve got a deal.” David spoke. At that, Frank let out a huge grin, as he looked out of the kitchen window at Mary and Fliss who were outside the apartment, both sat on a chair round the table. He and Fliss had both agreed they were prepared to go to the full asking price, in their mind it was worth it, but they were about to seal the deal here for ten thousand less.
“Ok, two thousand more.” Frank said, keeping his voice level “But the property comes off the market as we don’t want anyone else spotting it and offering him more before we exchange contracts.” he repeated word for word what Greg had instructed him to do when he had asked him to handle the conveyancing earlier that morning.
“Ok, so the offer on the table is Three-ten on the proviso he grants exclusivity…” David repeated. “Ok, leave it with me.”
Frank finished loading the dishwasher, and had just grabbed himself a beer when David called back not even five minutes later.
“Congratulations Mr Adler, you have a deal.”
He thanked him, and grinning ear to ear headed outside, jumping down the steps onto the lawn.
“What you looking so pleased about?” Fliss looked up at him suspiciously.
“David called… we’ve settled on three-ten plus exclusivity” he smiled
“What, you mean…” Fliss’ mouth fell open and Frank nodded.
“Yup, subject to contracts, the place is ours!”
Mary gave a loud cheer as Fliss jumped up and leapt at him as he smiled, wrapping her in his arms, swinging her up slightly.
“I can’t believe it…” she whispered. “Our own home!”
“I know” he beamed, setting her down as he gave her a quick peck. “I’ll call Greg in the morning. When I talked to him about it he said that with no loans involved it shouldn’t take too long. We could be looking a having the keys in a month.” His hands dropped to her hips, palms resting either side of where his son was growing “So plenty of time to do his nursery.”
Fliss grinned and using the arms that were round his neck pulled his face down to hers and pressed a fierce kiss to his mouth. “God I love you.” she mumbled.
“Love you too.” he grinned, kissing her again, ignoring Mary’s fake puking noises in the background.
*****
June 2019
“Mr Adler?"
Frank stopped as he had been striding over the yard to collect Mary and turned to see Mrs McCarthy, her teacher walking towards him.
"Hi." He smiled, removing his sunglasses so he could look her in the eyes.
"I'm so sorry to bother you"
"No bother at all." He assured her "is everything OK?"
Mrs McCarthy glanced over to where Mary was stood talking to her friend, Rosie, and turned back to him
"Yes...nothing too drastic but I wanted to make you aware about a little incident in class this afternoon"
Frank looked at her, blinking "incident?"
"Maybe that's the wrong word." The older, blonde woman said "Look, as you know next week it's the end of year Gala, the fundraiser and we invite the parents to join us for activities.”
Frank nodded, wishing the woman would get to the damned point. He was hot, dirty and bothered after an afternoon of helping the team on a particularly awkward repair and wanted nothing more than to stand under a cold shower for an hour and flop down outside with a beer.
"Well, one of the girls asked Mary if she was bringing her mom and if they were making anything for the bake sale and Mary rather bluntly told the girl her mother was dead and then clammed up. She didn't speak a word for the rest of the afternoon."
Frank felt his chest tighten as he looked over at Mary who was now giggling with Rosie and sighed
"She didn't do anything wrong" Mrs McCarthy pressed "I was just a little worried."
"Thanks for letting me know, I'll talk to her later, make sure she's okay." Frank assured her.
The woman nodded and headed back across the yard as Frank gave a sharp whistle and slid his aviators back onto his face. Mary looked up and said goodbye to Rosie and came wandering over as Frank waved to Rosie's mom who tossed a hand in greeting in response.
"I'm not Thor" She fixed Frank with a stare.
"I know but I couldn't be bothered walking over." He replied honestly as they climbed into the truck
"You have a good day?"
"It was OK." She shrugged. Frank eyed her for a second before she pulled the car away from the kerb and set off down the road.
"What's for dinner?" Mary asked.
"Steak, baked potatoes and salad." He replies "Fliss' choice."
"Are you grilling?" Mary asked.
"Yup." He nodded
"Cool." Mary nodded "Can I go in the pool before?"
"Got any homework?" Frank countered with another question as he looked at her. Mary shook her head
“End of year next week and Uni didn't give me any summer work."
"Then yeah, of course you can.”
Frank didn't raise the so called incident, deciding to let her chill out a little bit at home first and digest how she felt. After 20 minutes or so of general chat Frank pulled up their driveway and stopped the truck next to Fliss' truck. As they hopped out Mary glanced across the garden over the smaller part of the fence where she could just see Fliss walking across the yard.
"Please can I go see Monty?" She looked at Frank and he nodded.
"I'll watch you." He agreed. With a grin she sprinted over the lawn, climbed over the fence and dropped over onto the other side. Thor gave a bark and Fliss turned round and smiled at her, before she waved at Frank. He waved back before he headed down the side of the house, through the gate in the larger fence before he unlocked the back door and stepped inside the cool air conditioned kitchen, kicking off his shoes and heading straight to the fridge for a beer. Draining half in one he stood, looking around and smiling. They’d finally unpacked the last box yesterday evening and Fliss was still in the process of moving things around their new home, positioning them where she wanted them.
True to Greg’s word, they’d had the keys to the house 4 and a half weeks after making the offer, and 2 weeks post that once the bedrooms and hall had been decorated with a lot of help from Bill, Verity and Roberta (who had been happy for them yet still cried her eyes out when they’d left the park, despite the fact they had assured her they would still come visit and she could also come stay with them too) they’d moved in. The only thing left to do was the reception room (which could wait, it was easy to just shut the door and pretend it didn’t exist) and Bean’s nursery, which he, Fliss and Mary had decided to do together as a project. Mary and Fliss had spent nights pouring over Pinterest for ideas and they’d finally settled on a scheme. Frank had picked up all the plastering supplies and the paint, the furniture was on order and should be arriving at any time that week now he thought about it…so hopefully that weekend they could get cracking. That might cheer Mary up now he thought about it.
Taking his beer with him, he picked up his boots and took them to the cloakroom/bathroom by the stairs. He trudged up the steps, shaking his head at Fred who was led at the top, his paws hanging over the edge of the step as he eyed Frank.
"You're gonna cause a fucking accident." He looked at the ginger cat who merely swished his tail in response. Frank headed into their bedroom, stripping off as he went, walking straight into the en-suite, turning on the shower, setting his beer down on the edge of the sink unit. He stepped in and under the stream of cool water, closing the screen behind him, his mind still on Mary and how he was going to bring up what her teacher has said. With a groan he opened the door, reached out of the cubicle for his beer, took another gulp before he set about washing the grime of the day away.
***** "Have you finished grooming him?" Fliss asked, standing in the doorway to Monty's stable. Mary glanced over from where she had been brushing through his white tail and nodded.
"Wanna take him to the paddock?" Fliss smiled. "Cap and Bronson are waiting for their little pal."
"Sure." Mary shrugged and Fliss frowned a little at her demeanour. She was quiet, which was unlike her when she was round the horses. She was normally full of excitement.
"You OK?" She asked and Mary nodded.
"Why wouldn't I be?"
"You seem quiet, that's all."
"No, I'm good." She shrugged, before she tossed her brush into the little grooming box she had, closing the lid and passing it to Fliss. Fliss placed the box into the larger wooden one outside the stable before Mary put Monty's halter on and led him out of his stall. Fliss allowed them to walk ahead, her hand on her bump as she followed them out of the yard and down the little path to the gate that led to the paddocks. They reached the one were Monty was going and undoing the gate, Mary led him in. The white pony stood patiently for her to take his halter off before he stuck his nose into the crook of her neck and shoulder. Fliss smiled as Mary gently stroked his neck and then to her utter horror she saw Mary’s shoulders begin to shake as the girl started to cry.
"Hey, Mary..." she soothed, stepping forward as the small girl turned to her, wrapping her arms around her as best she could, pressing her face into her bump "Oh baby what's wrong?"
Mary didn’t reply, instead she continued to sob and Fliss felt powerless to do anything other than wrap her arms around her, one hand resting on her head, the other between her shoulders.
“Something happened at School…” Mary whispered and Fliss gently tipped her head up to look at her. “Someone said something and…”
“Ok, how about we go back to the office and you can tell me all about it ok?”
Mary nodded, sniffing as her sobs died down. Fliss held out her hand and Mary took it and together they headed back down to the yard. Joanne looked at Mary who was hiccupping slightly with her sobs and frowned but Fliss shook her head.
“Can you feed the top barn for me and then you can go.” she said to Jo who nodded. “I’ll lock up.” “Sure, see you tomorrow. Bye Mary.” she smiled. Mary looked at her and gave a small wave before Fliss led her into the office. She grabbed them both an apple juice from the fridge and then Mary sat on the chair at the end of the desk, wiping her eyes with a tissue that Fliss handed her from the box.
“You ready to talk?”
Mary nodded, and then she stood up and walked over to Fliss who made room for her to clamber up onto her lap. It was a bit awkward but after a little shifting around they found a way she could sit unobstructed by Boston Bean and Mary lay her head against Fliss’ shoulder.
“It was about the gala.” she sniffed “One of them asked me if my mom was coming and…”
“Oh sweetie.” Fliss sighed, rubbing her back. “I get that must have been hard.”
Mary shrugged “I told them she was dead.” she said matter of factly “I get that and I never knew my mom so I don’t miss her as a person…but then I started to think about why she died and I don’t understand.” “Understand what?”
“Why?” Mary looked at her. “Why would she do what she did when she had me? Why did she want to leave me behind?”
Fliss took a deep breath and cradled the girl as best she could, trying to think of a way to explain to which Mary could relate, and then it came to her, she could use her own experience here. There was no getting around the fact this was going to be a heave conversation, but Mary was a smart kid and deserved to be treated as such.
With another deep inhale, Fliss looked down at her, kissing her head before she opened rather bluntly "You know I tried to kill myself."
"You did?" Mary pulled back to look up at her "Why?"
"Because I saw it as my only way out." Fliss gently smoothing Mary’s hair back. "I was stuck in an awful situation. My ex-husband hurt me physically and mentally and I gave up. I wanted out."
Mary remained silent and looked at her.
"For someone to get to that point...they have to have hit rock bottom. Like there is nowhere to go. It's not their fault. And it doesn't mean they don't love the people they leave behind just that they're desperate to escape whatever pain they feel, be it in their head or their body or both."
"But I still don't understand." Mary shook her head.
"And you may never, not fully." Fliss sighed gently "And as horrible as it is that's something you are gonna have to live with but you have to remember that your mom was sick. And for whatever reason she saw this as her only escape. It wasn't Evelyn's fault, it wasn't Frank's fault and it certainly wasn't yours."
"But if she loved me like Frank says she did..."
"You think I don't love my mum and dad? Or Steve? Charlie, Joel?"
Mary blinked before she lay her head back against Fliss' shoulder. "Of course you do.”
"But I was still gonna leave them behind. I was desperate. And you wanna know the real stupid thing?"
"What?"
"When I got better I still went back to John. I went back to a real toxic environment and a man that abused me. Because I felt like it was what I deserved. And even though I left him way before I met you and Frank, it wasn't until me and Frank started dating that I really understood I wasn't to blame. I always thought I did something to make him hurt me but I didn't. Being with Frank, the way he treats me and loves me made me see that it was him with the problem, not me.”
"But that's different" Mary glanced up
"The trigger was, yes." Fliss nodded "But your mom, like me, was in a position so helpless, so unbelievably sad that she thought she was to blame and that the world, including you, would be better off without her even though she was so wrong."
**** Once showered and dried, Frank dressed in a pair of shorts and clean T-shirt before he headed back downstairs. There was no sign of Fliss or Mary but as he strode out into the garden he heard a car heading down the drive by the side of the house from the yard and correctly assumed it was Joanne leaving for the day. He opened the gate and just saw the tail of her car turn onto the main road as he headed into the garage for the charcoal to light the BBQ.
Once that was done, leaving the flames to die down he headed out across the lawn, vaulting over the small fence onto the yard. He headed round the barn and frowned as he couldn't see anyone. After a quick look round he spotted the door to Fliss' office was closed. He went to open it but stopped as he could hear the sound of voices. It was Mary and Fliss but he could tell from the pitch and stutters in Mary's that she was upset. He paused, hand hovering over the handle as he heard Fliss speaking to her softly. "Stack, you are so loved. Frank loves you, I love you, Nanny V, Poppa Bill, Uncle Steeby, Roberta, Evelyn...Thor, Fred and Monty..." she paused "You're such a special little girl and I know I'm not your mom but, well, I feel like I am."
"You do?"
"I'd do anything to keep you safe and happy. And so would Frank"
They both fell silent and Frank swallowed, the lump in his throat almost choking him.
"Don't ever feel like we don't" Fliss continued "and if I have to bake 200 fucking cookies for your Gala next week to prove it then I will."
Mary giggles "You know Bean can hear you swearing."
"Well I won't tell Frank if you don't"
"Do you think Frank feels like my dad?" Mary asked a moment later and at that point Frank really wanted to walk away. He couldn't listen to this, he didn't want to listen to this...but something kept him rooted to the spot.
"I know he does." Fliss replied.
"But he doesn't like it when people say it. I know that, I heard him talking to you. Bill’s not your real dad but you still say he is…."
“That’s slightly different sweetheart.” Fliss sighed "My real dad left my mom before I was born, so when he died. I didn’t even know him and I don’t care that I didn’t either. But your mom was Frank's sister. He wants to make sure you remember her, understand who she was. He could have easily just pretended to be your dad all this time, you would never have known any different but he didn't. Because he loves you and your mom too much. He's too honest and it’s important to him that you understand. But that doesn't mean he doesn't love you like he is your dad, or that you can't love him like he is."
Frank turned away from the door, looking up at the sky and taking a deep shuddering breath. Fuck, this was hard to hear. He knew Mary had been upset before but the thought that it ran this deep was killing me. Wiping at his face, his hands then dropped to his hips and he looked down at his sneakers before he turned to the door, reaching for the handle but once more pausing as he couldn’t face interrupting them, not whilst they were in the middle of a moment.
“I suppose that makes sense.” Mary continued  “And I do love him like he is. And I love you like you’re my mom too.”
“Well that’s all that matters.” Fliss replied “It may be unconventional but we’re a family, and that’s the main thing huh?”
“Yeah, you’re right. Thanks Lissy.” Mary spoke.
“You’re welcome Stack” Fliss’s voice was soft and there was a pause as Frank could picture the pair of them hugging.
“Hey, did you now I’m going to be doing all the money stuff for the bake stall?” Mary’s voice was suddenly up beat as she switched topic “Because I’m good at maths they said I could be in charge of payments and handing people their change and stuff.”
“Nice work kiddo.” Fliss smiled, “Tell you what, we’ll put Nanny V on the case, her baking is way better than mine. We can get her over one night next week whilst Pops is helping Frank with the plastering in the nursery.”
Ok, that was it, safe to enter without interrupting anything. Frank gave a little knock and then opened the door, fixing a smile on his face.
“Hope I haven’t interrupted any girl talk” he smiled and Mary jumped up and ran to him, giving him a hug. He looked at Fliss who wiped her eyes.
“Ok?” he mouthed at her and she nodded back, her lips moving silently as she replied.
“Tell you later.”
“BBQ is lit.” Frank said, looking down at Mary “You still wanna play in the pool?”
She nodded and grinned. “Yeah.”
“Sounds like a great idea.” Fliss grinned “Let’s lock up and head home…oh wait, we don’t need to head home because…” “We’re already there!” Mary grinned, and then she spun round to see Fred peering round the door. “Hey, look who came to visit!” “Bout time he earned his keep.” Frank grumbled “Go catch some mice.”
Fred stalked past him into the office, looked around, before he sauntered back out, clearly not interested.
“He’s a lover not a killer Frank.” Mary grinned, as Frank watched the cat walk off into the evening sun.
The three of them locked up before they headed back to the house and Mary shot upstairs to get changed.
“So, how much did you hear?” Fliss turned to Frank as he pulled a beer from the fridge along with a bottle of water, sliding it over to her.
“Enough.” he sighed “Her teacher collared me before. Said that one of the kids had asked about her mom in class and she’d gotten upset.”
“She asked me why Diane did what she did.” Fliss sighed, “Why she left her behind if she loved her so much.”
Frank swallowed. “What did you say?”
“I explained about why I tried to kill myself.” Fliss shrugged “Told her about the desperation I felt…but that didn’t mean that I didn’t love my family just that I saw it as my only way out. I know it was heavy and maybe not really the right thing to do but...”
She was cut off as Frank stepped forward, taking her face in his hands as he kissed her, hard. It took her a moment to catch up but once she did she melted into him, her mouth opening to grant him access as he ran his tongue along her bottom lip.
“Thank you.” He said gently as he pulled away, his hands still cupping her face.
“What for?” Fliss asked, reaching up to gently wrap her fingers around his wrists.
“For loving her as much as you do.” he shrugged. “For loving us both as much as you do.”
“Oh, Sailor.” Fliss’ eyes brimmed with tears “How could I not?”
***** Frank didn’t sleep particularly well that night. Mary’s conversation with Fliss was running through his brain and every time he drifted off he would wake about an hour or so later, fresh worries and concerns running through his mind. In the end, at just before 5 am he gave up and climbed out of bed. He grabbed a T-shirt and a pair of sweats and putting them on he headed downstairs. He flipped on the TV in the hope the early morning new would distract him, but it didn’t.
It was clear to him that Mary was struggling with where she was going to fit in the family dynamic. He hadn’t really worried much up to that point, being convinced by Fliss that if they kept her involved with stuff to do with Bean she would be ok but this went much deeper than the fact they were expecting a baby.
He’d be lying if he said the thought of him claiming to be Mary’s Father had never entered his mind. It would have been a lot easier but out of loyalty and love to Diane he had wanted to make sure she knew about her mother, and understood the truth because in the end, a lie would always come round to bite you on the ass. It wasn’t that he had a problem with people assuming he was Mary’s father but…
God what a fucking mess.
“Hey…” a soft voice drew him from his thoughts and he looked up to see Fliss stood in the doorway, his T-shirt she was wearing now hardly covered the top of her thighs thanks to her Bean bump.
“Sorry beautiful, did I wake you?” he asked.
“No.” she shook her head, dropping down next to him. “I got up to pee and you were gone.”
“Couldn’t sleep.” he shrugged.
“What’s wrong handsome?”  she lay her head on his shoulder and he took a deep breath.
“Just thinking about Mary that’s all.” he shrugged. “She’s always asked questions about Diane but not like that.”
“She’s getting older Frank.” Fliss said, her hand reaching out for his as she began to play with his fingers “She’s bound to start thinking about things differently. She was ok last night after she talked to me, and then later you when you tucked her in. She doesn’t keep her feelings bottled up, and that’s good. It’s a testament to you that she feels like she can talk to us about things.”
“I know.” Frank looked down at her, kissing her head “I guess I just worry Lissy, worry about how she’s gonna feel when Bean is here and he’s calling us mom and dad and she doesn’t.”
“Frank.” Fliss sighed as she sat up straight. “Mary knows we love her. And what she calls us doesn’t change a damned thing. You’re worrying unduly now. We can’t do anything about that other than-“
“Yes, yes we could.” Frank looked at her. Fliss took a deep breath as his eyes locked onto hers, instantly understanding.
“I thought you said you’d never even consider adopting her?”
“I never thought I would.” he shrugged. “But it’s been playing on my mind after what mother said and then after last night…” “Why? What did Evelyn say?” Fliss asked.
“When she was here last, she told me that Diane’s memory wouldn’t suddenly fade if Mary called me dad…” he licked his lips “It was almost like she was giving me permission to do it…you know? Not that I need it or really give a shit what she thinks.” he paused, taking a deep breath “If I’m totally honest Diane isn’t the only reason I said I didn’t want to. I just never thought of myself as being dad material. I was such a screw up until I met you and I thought that by staying as her Uncle, it would give her that distance, you know?”
“Not dad material?” Fliss looked at him, shaking her head “Oh Frank, you idiot. You’ve done an amazing job with her…and you will do with Bean too.”
He smiled at her, sniffing slightly as she continued.
“But there is one person who’s opinion counts most here.” Fliss said gently “And that’s Mary. If you’re serious then you should ask her if it’s what she wants. Because after 9 years of calling you Frank…”
“I know.” Frank agreed, “And I agree, completely. It would have to be her decision. But at least if I ask her if she would like us to then-“
“Us?” Fliss looked at him, blinking. “You mean you want me to?”
“Of course I do.” Frank nodded, before he frowned slightly “But if that isn’t what you want, I understand. It’s a big-“ Fliss cut him off by pressing a kiss to his lips “Of course I do Frank. I love Mary like she is my own anyway so…” Frank beamed at her and wrapped his arms around her, kissing her head. “So, we’re agreed. We ask her?”
Fliss nodded and pulled back, her hand resting on his cheek. “We ask her.”

Valentine Throwbacks: Day 2
Tumblr media
This was written a few years ago for the 14 Days of Valentine’s Prompts on tumblr. This was for day three: the meet-cute.
Summary: Emma Swan doesn’t do “cute.” So when she meets Killian Jones for the first time, well, she meets ALL of him. Or what happens when gym employee Emma walks in on Killian in the tanning bed.
Making a picset for this fic was simultaneously fun and frustrating. Colin’s chest hair is one of a kind, isn’t it? ;) I also didn’t want this to be NSFW, so the tanning bed pic isn’t exactly as described in the story, lol.
Words: almost 3k
Rated: High T ? I mean, Emma accidentally sees him nude, but that’s about it. I just can’t bring myself to rate this an M because it’s overall just funny and cute.

Emma Swan did not work her butt off just to wipe things. She practically crawled and scraped her way into a meaningful life after getting out of prison. She worked multiple jobs, lived in her car, ate nothing but beans straight from the can, and when the misery was all said and done, she had a college degree in exercise science. But like any field these days everyone wanted experience, so until she somehow got some, she was relegated to wiping things. Wiping down the equipment, wiping down mats, wiping, wiping, and more wiping. And she only made slightly more than the teenagers at the reception desk and the college guy who made the smoothies.
Emma sighed as she grabbed yet another fresh rag after her boss told her the tanning machines needed . . . you guessed it, wiping. She was paying more attention to her internal raging about how much her life sucked than she was to her superior telling her which beds were occupied. She was pretty sure she said they were all being used except for bed three, so Emma went all the way to the end of the narrow hallway that housed the tanning beds and stopped at the last door. If she hadn’t been distracted and moody, she might have thought to knock. Maybe. Then again, most people locked the damn door.
Well, not this guy. He also didn't wear underwear to tan like most people. Nope, he was completely nude. He lay there, in all his glory, shimmering under the UV bulbs like the god Apollo or something. And the Greek god comparison wasn’t an exaggeration between the light shining on him, and the chiseled muscles, and the perfect . . . He was sort of like a living version of the statue of the David, but tanned and with lots of chest hair.
“Who’s there!” he called out.
Emma gasped, then cursed under her breath as she turned and left, slamming the door behind her. She sagged against the heavy oak door, her heart racing. She groaned and covered her face with the hand that wasn’t still clutching the bottle of cleanser and rag. Had she just stood there and stared at the guy? Oh god, she had.
Suddenly, the door behind her gave way and Emma fell backwards with a yelp. From her place on the floor, she looked up to see Apollo himself standing above her, smirking, wearing nothing but a pair of tight, white briefs. Did he look . . . pleased with himself? She suddenly realized she was clutching the bottle of cleanser to her chest.
“Like what you saw, darling?” he asked with an arched brow. He had a British accent. Of course.
Emma rolled her eyes at him as she struggled to her feet, irritatingly brushing off his attempts to assist her. “Please, I didn’t even look. Do you think I want to burn my retinas?”
His eyes, which were an amazing shade of blue, seemed alight with mirth as he regarded her. “Then why the blush?” He leaned towards her slightly, his encroachment upon her personal space made all the more infuriating by his lack of clothing. She took a step back towards the doorway.
“Oh great,” she snapped, “you’re that type.”
His brow furrowed, and for a moment he actually looked slightly hurt. “What type?”
Emma crossed her arms across her chest, despite the awkwardness of the cleaning supplies clutched in her hand. “Isn’t it obvious? I mean, seriously, who uses a tanning bed in the middle of the winter? Except for –“ she vaguely gestured up and down his person, “wanna-be Calvin Klein underwear models.”
It was his turn to scowl and cross his arms over his chest. His very appealing chest that Emma was trying really hard not to stare at.
“Or maybe some people do it for their health. You ever think of that?”
“Yeah right,” Emma bit out, “health of what? Your sex life, playboy?”
His blue eyes sparked with indignation. “Oh, you get an eye-full and you suddenly know me?”
Guilt pricked at her for a moment. She was in the wrong here for barging in without knocking. But his smirking and innuendos had her defenses up. “I know your type,” she told him smugly with a tilt of her chin.
“You walk in on me, and I’m the bad guy?”
He had a point, and she knew it. She took several more steps backwards into the hallway and turned on her heel, her ponytail swinging with irritation all its own. “Ugh, I’ve got work to do. Wipe the bed down, I get tired of cleaning up other people’s sweat all day.”
Emma half expected him to get in one last word, but as she marched away, all she heard was the slamming of the door to tanning room three.
***********************************************************
The week of her little embarrassing tanning bed episode, there had been a slight lull at the gym. It had been the last week of January, when New Year’s resolutions were waning and the cold weather dampened people’s motivation. But now people seemed to suddenly realize that Valentine’s Day was only two weeks away, and the gym was once again packed. Even the indoor pool had been in more frequent usage, so Emma’s boss sent her to check the chlorine levels. With the flu epidemic, they couldn’t afford to let germs spread in the warm water.
It had also been a week since Emma had seen “Apollo the sun god,” much to her relief. But when she exited the women’s locker room, into the pool area, there he was: his muscular back an appealing sight as his arms cut through the water. He was evidently an experienced swimmer as he turned off the wall expertly and did a strong backstroke across the length of the pool. Emma shook her head and cursed herself. Damn it, she was staring again!
Emma was leaning over the edge, a nice distance away from the tanning god, getting samples of the water in little test tubes. She was shaking the first one to get a result when she was sprayed with little droplets of water. She looked up, her eyes angry, narrow slits, to see him, treading water easily with a maddening grin on his face. The pool water made his blue eyes almost glitter like sapphires, and he looked unfairly sexy wet.
“I’ve been hoping to see you again,” he told her. “We didn’t exactly get off on the right foot. I’m sorry I teased you, I was just trying to help you see the humor in the situation. It came off wrong, obviously.”
Emma purposely ignored him, staring at the little tube in her hand and trying to remember what the hell she was looking at. He cut through the water towards her, and rested his arm on the edge of the pool inches away from where she crouched.
“I’m Killian Jones by the way,” he said. Emma pressed her lips together in frustration as she blushed for absolutely no reason. She still refused to look at him. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him cock his head. “And this is the part where you say, hello, I’m Emma Swan.”
She jerked her head so fast, she almost dropped the test tube. “How did you –“
“I can read, love,” he laughed, gesturing towards her right shoulder.
Emma groaned as she glanced down at her employee name tag. She got hit on all the time at the gym, and had heard a million different pick-up lines involving her last name. But she had sworn off men since Neal, except for an occasional one night stand. But those were never men from work; too much familiarity.
“Some men would take your silence as off-putting,” Killian told her then with a smirk, “but I love a challenge.” Then he had the audacity to wink before diving back under the water.
Emma rubbed her forehead wearily as she stood. The water was low on chemicals, so she pushed the handsome swimmer/sun bather from her mind as she collected what she needed from the supply closet. She measured the chlorine as well as a small dose of shock and added it to the filtration system, then she headed back for the locker room.
Emma wasn’t sure exactly what happened next. There was a puddle of water on the tile floor deep enough to send her sensible sneakers sliding out from under her. Then her arms were wind-milling in empty air, and the pool water seemed to be rushing up to meet her. But before she could hit the water, a hand shot out and grasped her by the elbow. She was hauled from the pool edge, colliding with a warm, wet, very masculine chest.
Killian Jones chuckled as his other arm came around her. “Next time, don’t stand on ceremony.”
Emma blamed her shocked surprise for her delayed reaction in pulling away from him. “Please, Jones, don’t flatter yourself.”
He tucked his tongue into his cheek and waggled his eyebrows, “Remembering yesterday?”
Emma fumed as she gave him a disdainful once-over. “I’m just shocked you’re not in a speedo, mister tighty-whitey.”
Killian’s eyes widened and his gaze went from playful to irritated. “You wouldn’t even know I wore tighty-whities if you hadn’t walked in on me!”
Emma threw up her hands in frustration, resisting the urge to shove him. “It was an accident!”
He arched one brow. “Like you almost falling in the pool?”
Emma scoffed as she crossed her arms over her chest, “Who said I was falling?”
“Fine,” he spat out, “next time, I’ll just let you fall.”
He brushed past her then, grabbing his towel angrily as he marched towards the men’s locker room. Emma started to stomp her way in the opposite direction, but then decided she better tread more carefully on the wet floor.
Not that she had needed Killian Jones to catch her. She was just fine on her own.
********************************************************
Several hours later, Emma walked into her apartment and kicked her gym shoes off by the door. Her feet ached as she dragged herself over to the couch and plopped down next to her roommate. She groaned and Elsa laughed, handing her a slice of pizza from the pie resting on the coffee table.
“Rough day?”
“Yeah,” Emma muttered around a bite, “tanning bed guy showed up again.”
“Oh,” Elsa laughed, wrinkling her nose, “that must have been embarrassing.”
Emma waved her hand. “Don’t want to talk about it. I just want to stuff my face with pizza and zone out in front of the TV.” She narrowed her eyes at the screen and groaned, “Not this, Elsa, seriously?”
Her best friend shook her head as she chuckled at Emma. “Dr. Oz gives lots of good advice.” She poked Emma in the shoulder. “You should listen to him, junk food junkie. How you’re ever going to be a personal trainer when you eat like a fourteen year old, is beyond me.”
Emma smirked and lifted two fingers, “One, I was gifted with an amazing metabolism. Two, my clients will just need to do as I say, not as I do.”
They both laughed then and continued devouring the pizza. Emma’s brow furrowed as she tried to follow the show, since she had missed the first half. “What’s wrong with this girl he’s talking to?” she finally asked Elsa.
“Seasonal affective disorder,” Elsa explained, “lots of people get it in the winter.”
Emma snorted. “Is that a real thing? It sounds made up.”
Elsa shrugged, “I don’t understand it, since I love winter. The snow is so pretty, and the cold – I just don’t get why it bothers people.”
Emma rolled her eyes and tossed a throw pillow at her friends’ head, “Okay, you’re weird, we’ve established that.”
Elsa whacked Emma with the pillow then hugged it to her chest instead of giving it back. “Seriously though, it is a real thing. My friend at work struggles with it. I finally talked him into seeing a therapist, and Killian says it really helps him. Some things that help are physical, like –“
The blood had drained from Emma’s face as she choked out, “like a tanning bed?”
Elsa’s eyes widened, “Yeah, actually, and he swims in an indoor pool, too. Why?”
Emma groaned, dropping her pizza back to the box. She covered her face with both hands. “Please,” she muttered between her fingers, “don’t tell me his last name is Jones and that he has a British accent.”
“Yeah, he –“ Elsa’s words cut off as understanding dawned, “oh my god, you’re not saying he’s the tanning bed guy?”
Emma peeked through her fingers, “Yes, that’s what I’m saying. He introduced himself today – at the pool. Trying to be nice, actually.” She moaned as she lowered her head to Elsa’s lap. “I’m a bitch,” she whispered.
Elsa just gave a tiny, soft laugh as she worked the tangles out of Emma’s hair with her long fingers. “Well, so am I, that’s why we’re friends.”
*****************************************************
Emma hoped that good intentions justified quasi-stalking. She had to make it up to Killian for being so horrible, and she couldn’t just wait around to bump into him again. She pulled his account up on her work computer and learned his gym routine. Killian Jones was an extremely punctual person of habit. On Tuesdays and Thursdays he got to the gym at 5 am and left at 6:30. Emma didn’t get to her shift on those days until 8:00. But on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, he arrived at 7:00 pm and left at 8:30, which were the same days that Emma worked late.
Unfortunately, Elsa informed her that Killian had come down with the dreaded flu. By the time he came back to the gym, and Emma had figured out how to approach him, it was February the 14th. It wasn’t ideal to approach him on Valentine’s Day. After all, she didn’t want him to get the wrong idea. But if she put it off any longer, she knew she would chicken out. So on Valentine’s Day, when Killian Jones exited the gym, he found Emma Swan leaning against his black SUV with a smoothie in her hand. (That had taken additional stalking. To ascertain the smoothie he usually ordered and which vehicle in the parking lot belonged to him.)
“A peace offering?” Emma asked, hating when her voice cracked a bit. When he just stood there with his mouth hanging open, she rushed on, “And an apology? For walking in on you and then. . .well, for being a bitch.”
That finally got a chuckle out of him. He shuffled forward, and for the first time looked nervous. He tossed his bag in the back seat then turned to her with a smile as he leaned against the car with his arms crossed. “What brought on this sudden change?”
Emma’s face fell, and her eyes lowered to stare at the cup in her hand. “Your friend, Elsa Arrendale? I’m her roommate.”
“Oh,” Killian said, scratching behind his ear.
“And she didn’t tell me much,” Emma rushed to explain, “just enough to make me see how quick I was to judge you.”
Killian nodded. “So she told you I’m a mess this time of year, huh?”
Emma smiled and shrugged, “Hey, not everyone loves freezing their ass off the way Elsa does.” That got another chuckle out of him. “And besides, I’m a mess pretty much year round.”
“Well,” Killian said with a long sigh, “I was too, for a while. Right after my Milah died, I could barely get out of bed each morning. That was five years ago.”
Emma frowned. “I’m so sorry. Who was she? Your wife?”
“Aye,” Killian answered softly, “she died in a car accident. This time of year. We were going out on a nice date.”
“Valentine’s day?”
“No,” he said with a shake of his head and a false grin, “my birthday, actually, end of January.”
“I’m so sorry, Killian. No wonder this time of year is so hard for you.” She bit her lip. “Can you ever forgive me for being such a jerk to you?”
He ran his hand down his face, and afterwards, he gave her a more relaxed smile. “Of course I forgive you, Swan. I do make an arse of myself at times, so I can’t really blame you.”
They shared a laugh at that. Emma cocked her head, studying him and seeing him in a whole new light. “You have Valentine plans?”
Both his eyebrows lifted, “Can’t say I do. Why?”
She shrugged, “How about I buy you a drink?” She shook the smoothie cup still in her hand. “A bit stronger than this.”
Killian gave her a sinful smile, cocked his head, and tapped his lips. “I’d say you owe me a proper apology, love.”
Emma wanted to scoff, to roll her eyes, but all she could do was smile as a blush crept up her face. “That’s what the drink is for.”
Killian pouted then, quite affectively. “That’s all I get? When this time of year makes me so, so sad?”
What Emma did next was partly to shut him up. However, she had to admit, it was also because she had imagined what it would be like to kiss him a thousand times since the tanning bed. So she lunged for him, the smoothie falling to the ground forgotten with a thud and a splash. She hauled him in by the collar of his shirt, her mouth hungrily taking his.
Because she could admit it now: Yes, she liked what she saw.

The guy who had bought it, Frank didn’t even know his name, nor did he care because he was a douchebag and a pervert to boot.
Some of it is really nice, some of it needs decorating but…” “Ok, well, why don’t you call the realtor? Arrange a viewing” he said “Hopefully you won’t puke halfway round this one.” “Ok, first off that wasn’t my fault.
It was up for just over 320 thousand, which was a fucking steal considering the size, location, the garden and the garge/outhouse it came with.
I thought I could take an extra half hour, work it back tonight or…” “Frank, when was the last time you actually took a full hour for your lunch and didn’t cut it short by 10 or 15?” Alan looked at him.
“I wanted to talk to you in person.” Alan said, “Before the news gets out.
“Wow, I err…” Frank shook his head “I don’t know what to say.” “I don’t need an answer now.” Alan said, “Take some time to consider it. Talk it over with Fliss.”
“I will, I’ll give it some thought.” “Ok, well, that’s all I dropped in for.” Alan said, standing up, groaning a little “Did you just hear my damned knees click?”
We could be looking a having the keys in a month.” His hands dropped to her hips, palms resting either side of where his son was growing “So plenty of time to do his nursery.” Fliss grinned and using the arms that were round his neck pulled his face down to hers and pressed a fierce kiss to his mouth. “God I love you.” she mumbled. “Love you too.” he grinned, kissing her again, ignoring Mary’s fake puking noises in the background.

June 2019
"OK...thanks for letting me know, I'll make sure she's ok." Frank assured her.
The woman nodded and headed back across the yard as Frank gave a sharp whistle and slid his aviators back onto his face. Mary looked up and said goodbye to Rosie and came wandering over as Frank waved to Rosie's mom who tossed a hand in greeting in response.
"I'm not Thor" she said, fixing Frank with a stare.
"I know but I couldn't be bothered walking over." He said honestly as they climbed into the truck
"You have a good day?"
"It was OK." She shrugged. Frank eyed her for a second before she pulled the car away from the kerb and set off down the road.
"What's for dinner." Mary asked.
“It was about the gala.” she said gently “One of them asked me if my mom was coming and…”
“Oh sweetie.” Fliss sighed, rubbing her back.
"Because I saw it as my only way out." Fliss said gently, smoothing her hair back.
"And you may never, not fully." Fliss said gently "And as horrible as it is that's something you are gonna have to live with but you have to remember that your mom was sick. And for whatever reason she saw this as her only escape. It wasn't Evelyn's fault, it wasn't Frank's fault and it certainly wasn't yours."
"But if she loved me like Frank says she did..."
"You think I don't love my mum? Or Bill? Or Steve?"
Mary blinked before she lay her head back against Fliss' shoulder. "Yeah"
"But I was still gonna leave them behind." Fliss sighed "I was desperate. And you wanna know the real stupid thing?"
"What?"
"When I got better I still went back.
Frank loves you, I love you, Nanny V, Poppa Bill, Uncle Steeby, Roberta, Evelyn...Thor, Fred and Monty..." she paused "You're such a special little girl and I know I'm not your mom but...I feel like I am."
“That’s slightly different sweetheart.” Fliss sighed "My real dad left my mom before I was born, so when he died…I didn’t even know him and I don’t care that I didn’t either.
“You’re welcome Stack” Lissy’s voice was soft and there was a pause as Frank could picture the pair of them hugging.
“For loving her as much as you do.” he said simply “for loving us both as much as you do.”
“Oh Sailor.” Fliss’ eyes brimmed with tears “How could I not?”
“We ask her.”

denki kaminari x reader
prompt: lost in the woods ( @bnhabookclub‘s bingo event!!)
in the end, only the watcher stays.
a/n: thank you to the wonderful @pixxiesdust, fantastic @chubbynegget, the amazing @samanthaa-leanne, the incredible @fanfic-me-up, the celestial @tamasoft, and the exceptional @eddiesfuckinzone for beta’ing for me!! y’all are so sweet ;; the transparents are from @bellushimiko! you can find them here!
Denki Kaminari didn’t know how he got in this situation.
He was in the middle of a ring of trees, which inside had a ring of rocks. A snowy wolf was on top of the rocks with a dissatisfied snarl, their tail wrapped around the top of it in a cartoonish way. Denki didn’t know what wrong turn he made, where he separated from Bakugou, Kirishima, and Sero, but he had found himself in front of a pack of dark wolves, all growling at him. He was sure that they would’ve eviscerated him, had the white wolf not come along. They turned without question or fear, and the white wolf simply stared at him like a disappointed mother. Not only that, something was just off about the ring, like if he stretched his hand forward, he could touch something not quite mortal.
“Hooh-kay…” He sighed, leaning away from the wolf. “This is weird.”
The wolf narrowed their e/c eyes. Denki gripped the strap of his hiking backpack tighter.
“I am going...to leave you alone. I am not dying today. Nuh-uh.” Denki pursed his lips before attempting to go around the rocks. A sharp, female voice pierced the air.
“What are you doing in my forest?”
Denki froze, golden eyes wide. “Who said that?”
He spun left and right, panic in his veins. The voice echoed all around him, and he near snapped his neck trying to locate it. A twig snapped behind him, and when he looked, the wolf was gone.
“Didn’t your parents ever teach you to not answer a question with a question?”
Denki spun around and saw the wolf was gone. His heart stopped, just a bit, and he looked around to try and track the wolf. There were glimpses of it, just barely, like a wisp in the dark trees. There was no sunlight, no moonlight, no light at all, except for the vaguely glowing rocks and the white wolf. A voice hissed, everywhere and nowhere at once. Every word was annoyed and packed a punch, echoing in the deepest parts of the forest like an auditorium.
“What are you doing in my forest?”
Denki jumped out his skin, leaping away and trying to turn, but something snagged his ankle and he plummeted to the ground. He tried to catch his breath until he saw the barest wisp of a white shadow before someone walked up to him. Before him was a young woman, maybe his age, with h/c hair and startling white streaks running through it. Despite her skin being s/c, she was practically glowing, and one eye was even so grey it was white. The other was a warmer e/c. It could only be described as more human, tangibly vulnerable. Denki swallowed.
She was, without a doubt, ethereal. Celestial, earthly, ghostly and immortal all at once.
“Are you deaf?” She hissed, and Denki was broken out of his stupor. Her tone was more irked than anything, and she leaned in. Denki backed up and she took a step forward, and they played it as though it were tag until Denki’s back hit the biggest rock in the middle.
“Uh, well, uh, I, uh, my friends, we were, uh, you’re...you’re pretty. Who are you?” Denki stuttered out what he hoped was a comprehensive sentence, but the girl’s eyes darkened. “What are you?”
“That’s a bit rude, innit?” She stood straight, holding her nose up in the air. “You’re in my forest, and you’re asking what I am?”
“I’m sorry, ma’am, miss. Uh.” He fumbled over his words when she leaned in again, and he breathed in something that was purely terrestrial. It was all sorts of sweet things, like berries, and there was mud and bark and the sunlight wafting through the trees when you’re alone.
“Well?”
Denki blinked. “Well, what?”
“Why. Are. You. In. My. Forest?”
“I thought it was government property.”
“That’s what I let them think.” The girl shrugged haughtily.
“Then…I was here with some of my friends.” Denki stepped from the rock, feeling something tingling up his back. “We were walking the trails, actually.”
“Then you should’ve stayed on the trails.” The girl tilted her head condescendingly. “Didn’t anyone ever tell you to not stray in the woods?”
“Well, if it meant I would meet pretty girls, then I would do it anyway.” The girl jumped when Denki said it so smugly, and her head whipped around. She wore a pout before huffing.
“You’re in the face of...of me, and you flirt?”
“I flirt with danger. What can I say?”
“Insufferable.” She gave a cross between a concerned and disgusted. “Are all humans like this?”
“Only me.” Denki gave a cheesy grin. The girl’s frown shook at its foundation.
“Absolutely amazing. Are you aware that I could kill you?”
Something in Denki told him that he should be terrified, but he wasn’t. It was like when humans go skydiving; stupid, but entirely within their will.
“I guess. You look too cute though.”
“C-!” The girl sputtered a bit.”Why would you…?!”
“What’s your name?” Denki felt his confidence grow at the crack in her exterior. “I’m Denki Kaminari.”
“I have many names.” The girl hesitated, still looking confused. “Aisling, some call me. But I know myself as YN.”
Denki nodded fervently, a finger on his chin like he was trying to mimic Michelangelo’s David. “A pretty name for a pretty lady! I like it!”
“You’re named for thunder.” YN mused, slowly letting her shell edge away. “Why?”
“I have an electric quirk!”  He snapped his fingers and let out a little spark. YN’s eyes got impossibly big.
“How did you do that?” There was a veiled shock in her voice like she either didn’t want to show her confusion or didn’t want to offend him. “You...are you...do you have magicks?”
“Huh? Magic? Nah! It’s a quirk! All my friends have quirks. If you want, we can go and look for them.”
“Your...friends. The ones you got lost from.”
“Yeah! Sero can use tape, and Mina, she’s super cool, she’s got acid!”
“...Alright, then.” YN rose to her full height for the first time, and Denki felt something deep in him shift when he realised she was his height if not taller. He couldn’t tell if it was good or bad. “Where did you lose them?”
“What?” Denki paused. “I figured you knew, like, everything about the forest?”
YN frowned. “I’m not omnipotent. This is my forest, but I don’t know everything.”
“Well,” Denki turned, beginning to go back to the way he came. “This got a lot harder.”
“They are your age, yes?” YN followed without making so much as a sound, quicker on her feet than she should’ve been. When Denki glanced down, he saw she was like a gazelle; prancing with her feet barely touching the ground. She often let him move ahead of her, only to leap forward in a graceful movement that made Denki jealous, flitting left and right like a curious faerie.
“I mean, yeah. We all go to school together.”
“Then they are most likely still looking for you. We shall listen, and I can send the madaidhean-allaidh to look.”
“The what?”
“Wolves. The wolves.”
“Oh.” Denki turned back around and began trying to retrace his steps. The trees loomed over him, and when he glanced around, YN was gone. Panic flooded his system until there was a small giggle from above him. He looked up to see YN perched on a branch that in no way could’ve held her weight and leap from limb to limb of the trees. She didn’t so much as wobble, and Denki tripped on a rock watching her. He fell into a faceful of moss and he heard YN slump onto a branch, laughing.
“Come on, buachaill toirneach! We shall find your friends!”
Tumblr media
They didn’t find Denki’s friends.
It had been well over an hour and Denki could feel the sun sapping at his energy. Sweat clung to his skin and he used some spare cloth from his bag to hold his hair back. There was conversation at the beginning of the search, soft murmurings from YN that lead Denki to somehow make a fool of himself, but as time went on, they drained away into silence.
YN.
With every moment she moved, with every glance Denki sneaked in, he began to realise something about her. When he first met her, he thought she was a quirk user, just not socialised. She spoke fondly about her forest and the wolves. She was lithe and fast, running across the trees without touching the ground. She became little more than a streak of a white dress, dancing through the leaves and sunlight. Her feet never seemed to touch anything.
Denki wondered if she was even human.
It made sense. Maybe she was something older than him, or even older than quirks. Was she from an age bygone? Or was she as old as the planet itself? Did she plant the first tree of the wood and remained with it, long after all the other little plants and animals had left? She seemed so cosmically amaranthine, like the very oaks and pines kneeled their branches so she could flit across them. She didn’t even look human, with kind hands and arms that lead to a coldly beautiful torso, and a graceful neck, and a head that Denki was sure not even Toga could duplicate.  She was strangely deathless, like a corpse brought back to life. Even her hair seemed to defy mortality and gravity.
Denki blinked. He had been staring at her, and she was staring unblinkingly right back, not even glancing to see where her feet would go. Her arms were behind her back and she looked mischievously innocent.
“Penny for your thoughts?” She mused, weaving behind the trunk of a redwood and reappearing on the other side. Denki pursed his lips.
“What are you?”
YN faltered for the first time, stopping and staring at Denki with her full attention. He stopped, too, but because of the severity of her eyes. One white, one e/c. It was spectral and eerie, and something in Denki’s blood cooled and was lit on fire at the same time.
“What do you think I am, thunder boy?” She asked. She sat on a branch, but it was airy, like she lifted her legs and floated down onto the bark.
“I don’t know.” Denki hesitated. “I don’t think you’re human.” “No, I’m not.” YN held her head in her palm, looking thoughtful. “I don’t think I ever was.”
Denki swallowed thickly. “Then...are you some sort of god?”
YN paused before beginning to shake with laughter. It consumed her whole until she had to wipe a tear from one immortal eye.
“There are no gods here. It’s just me. No god would dare step in here.”
“Why not?”
YN tilted her head. “Why not…? I suppose they are afraid of me. I am not something to be controlled.”
“Then what are you?” Denki felt the slightest sense of frustration. They were back to the original question.
“I don’t know.”
Instantly, Denki felt all emotions except for guilt vanish. She sounded so sad and confused, looking up towards the sky and dangling her legs back and forth. The dress swirled around her thighs.
“Oh.”
“I suppose I’m the forest, itself. I’ve been here for so long, I’m not quite sure. I remember when the humans came in with axes and blades, and I howled and bit at them until they bled.” She looked back down at Denki. “It took them years, but they learned their lesson. They will not touch my forest ever again.”
Denki said nothing but swallowed again. He could only imagine the fear; something you didn’t know, monsters even, coming in and tearing down your home, your heart. Of course, YN would react the way she did, to both them and Denki. She wasn’t hostile, she was defensive. She wasn’t mean or rude. She was scared and confused.
“You’re a curious human, thunder boy.”
Denki snapped out of his thoughts when YN fell to the ground. Her arms were spread for the fall and her feet touched the forest floor without so much as a sound. Where she stepped, Denki realised, little white, star-shaped flowers bloomed. She looked at him and Denki looked at her.
“Why are you guilty, thunder boy?” She walked to him as though he were a scared animal. He felt his breath catch when she got unbelievably close. “You are kind. And that is...rare in humans.”
“I just...I feel bad. For what we’ve done.”
“Then fix it. Learn from your mistakes.” She was close, so close, and Denki was sure he stopped breathing. He could smell her, and she smelled like rain and sunlight and all the little green things.
“I will,” He gasped out. “I will.”
And YN leaned in, just enough, and Denki leaned in, and quietly, like the moon on a cloudy night, their lips met.
It wasn’t more than skin on skin, but it was soft, and Denki shook. He placed a gentle, quivering hand on YN’s cheek and he could feel her smiling, ever so sweetly. When she pulled away, there was a softness in her eyes, and she held a hand to his cheek. She began swiping her thumb against it, and Denki realised he had been crying. Something tugged at his heart, and he kneeled to the ground.
“I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry.”
YN kneeled down, too, and the plants around them seemed to lean in. The wind fell silent and the trees stopped whispering, and it was like the whole forest leaned in to hear.
“I know, Denki. I know.”
Tumblr media
Denki didn’t know when he fell asleep or woke up, but it was with Sero looming over him.
“Dude!” Sero cheered. “You’re finally awake! Hey guys!” Sero turned, waving. “He’s awake!”
Denki sat up as the other three began walking over. Bakugou looked furious as usual, but both Kirishima and Mina looked relieved.
“Lucky! We were worried something happened!”
“Yeah, bro! Next time, we’ll keep better tabs on everyone!”
“Stick the dunce on a leash.”
“Don’t pretend you weren’t worried, bro.”
Denki rubbed his head. “Wait...what happened?”
“We lost you around, like, three o’clock.” Kirishima squatted, jutting a thumb towards the woods. Denki realised they were outside the ranger’s cabin, and off to the side were two rangers (one a dog, and the other a duck.) He swallowed.
“Wait. Where did you guys find me?”
“More like you found us and then passed out, or something.” Sero shrugged. “You were in your sleeping bag, by the campsite. We went back so we could get signal to call someone, and you were there, just chilling.”
“Don’t you remember?” Mina cooed.
“No. I remember...I was in…” Denki faltered.
“Maybe you sleepwalked, then. It was pretty far off from where we realised we lost you.” Sero mused. Kirishima sighed, crossing his arms.
“We’re lucky something worse didn’t happen, bro.”
“Yeah…” Denki glanced to his left, seeing the campsite, before realising there was a series of plants leading up to his and Sero’s tent. They all were swaying softly, little white, star-shaped flowers that seemed to wave to him. Denki felt his heart race, mind running as he tuned out the others. He glanced around rapidly before looking back to the tree line.
And there, a lone white wolf stared back with one white eye.
She bowed her head, and the others fell silent. She had one paw extended, before turning quietly and slowly back into the heart of the forest.
“What the hell was that?” Bakugou growled. Denki felt a flush rise to his cheeks, and he brought a hand up to his lips. The trees shuffled and whispered, as though they were saying goodbye, and the little white flowers followed the white wolf home.

Hey Hope you're doing okay It's a really random question (feel free to ignore it) but it just happened and I saw your ex-mormon tag My cousin who grew up in a very strict mormon family and got married at nineteen and had two kids very young Just came out as a lesbian and left her ex husband As someone who was in this religion, do you think she can stay in it and will be accepted? Like is there lgbt space there ? And even if there is what's the general view on the inside ?
Short answer: no
Longer answer: Mormons will talk about how they “love” lgbt people but you have to know that this is pretty much. just a straight up lie when you compare their beliefs and practices to how they want to be perceived as loving Everyone No Matter What.
In mormonism, it is required that gay people stay completely celibate for their whole lives until they die and God “sorts things out” in heaven, meaning that a gay man would be “given” a wife or a lesbian would be “given” to a husband. And by celibacy, they mean no having any sort of romantic inclinations ever. All gay thoughts must be repressed, no holding hands, no kissing, CERTAINLY no marriage. They are required to just stick out being alone in this life until God can make you straight in the afterlife. Hopefully I don’t have to explain to anyone that telling gay people “everything will be better and God will fix you once you die” is. not great.
The additional problem with this is, Mormons believe in an “Eternal Plan of Happiness” which necessitates marriage in the mormon temple for someone to be truly happy. Other kinds of marriage/living together without being married outside of mormonism (referenced specifically in a gay way lmao) aren’t “real” marriages.
Iconic quote from a church apostle Jeffrey Holland:
“Can you see the moral schizophrenia that comes from pretending you are one [in marriage], pretending you have made solemn promises before God, sharing the physical symbols and the physical intimacy of your counterfeit union but then fleeing, retreating, severing all such other aspects of what was meant to be a total obligation?” (Ensign, 1998, pg. 76-77)
From 2015-2019, it was mormon doctrine that if a gay person got married, they would be automatically excommunicated and their children would not be allowed to join the church until they were 18, no longer lived with their gay parents, and specifically disavowed their parents’ marriage. Making being gay a more heavily punished sin than murder/rape/etc.! If your parent commits a crime in mormonism, then you personally are not judged or restricted at all. If your parents are gay, then you have to take specific steps to distance yourself from them. From a church that thinks that the only way to be truly happy is to be Mormon and take all the necessary steps in mormonism such as baptism and being sealed in marriage you can see why this is such a huge deal to them to deny it to people! (This policy was reversed in 2019, which makes it kind wild to think that god apparently changed his mind about how severely to punish gay people within a span of four years. don’t worry now gay marriage is just equivalent to murder/rape instead of being worse)
The church has been staunchly opposed to every form of progress for lgbt rights for decades. In 2008 they advocated heavily for prop 8 in california, which would deny lgbt people the right to marry. They’ve also been vocally anti-gay marriage in their own sermons and addresses to the mormon population in a service called General Conference. As a lesbian who was mormon until I turned 18, I can tell you without any doubt that an anti-gay message was worked into nearly EVERY lesson/sermon/etc. It’s been their THING for the past 20 years or so, once everyone called them out on being racist and they had to try to stop that. (the insanely racist aspects of mormonism is ANOTHER post for another time)
Let’s go through some of my favorite anti “same sex attracted” quotes from the past couple of years!
“Our knowledge of God’s revealed plan of salvation requires us to oppose many of the current social and legal pressures to retreat from traditional marriage or to make changes that confuse or alter gender or homogenize the differences between men and women,” Oaks said in an address to the church's General Conference in October. Those pressures, he said, come from none other than Satan, who “seeks to confuse gender, to distort marriage, and to discourage childbearing, especially by parents who will raise children in truth.” -Dallan H. Oaks, General Conference Oct. 2018
“There are no homosexual members of the church.” David A. Bednar, Feb. 23, 2016
pretty much anything Boyd K. Packer ever said, fuck this guy for real
more boyd again I hate this man
“There are some men who entice young men to join them in these immoral acts. If you are ever approached to participate in anything like that, it is time to vigorously resist. While I was in a mission on one occasion, a missionary said he had something to confess. I was very worried because he just could not get himself to tell me what he had done. After patient encouragement he finally blurted out, 'I hit my companion.' 'Oh, is that all,' I said in great relief. 'But I floored him,' he said. After learning a little more, my response was 'Well, thanks. Somebody had to do it, and it wouldn't be well for a General Authority to solve the problem that way.' I am not recommending that course to you, but I am not omitting it. You must protect yourself.“ - Boyd K. Packer, 1976
There’s about a million more, but a good summary exists here on wikipedia about the church’s changing homophobic stances. Including all the electroshock therapy at BYU! good times.
Here are some good videos that explain why mormons trying to say they’re not homophobic are Complete Bullshit
youtube
youtube
On a more personal level, I can tell you that my experience with homophobia in the mormon church has been pretty devastatingly awful and I’m still experiencing the repercussions of being raised in an environment that actively told me what a horrible thing I was for Being Gay. Not all experiences are universal of course, but I can pretty much guarantee that any lgbt people still in the church are experiencing some major cognitive dissonance in order to justify their treatment there and keep believing that this is what God wants for them.
The homophobia usually isn’t outwardly violent and obvious -- it’s always couched in “language of love” while still conveying the meaning that gay people are inherently bad and will be better off once they die. Some people are still trying to change the church’s general opinion about this, especially the younger generation. The fact is, though, that the mormon church is inherently homophobic and that its doctrine cannot be separated from that. So, your cousin might know some good people who will do their best to accept her in spite of their mormon beliefs. Just know that those people will also probably be believing all the above things I’ve stated as absolute truth/doctrine at the same time.

Saturday GC Sessions Summary
Topics, quotes, and summaries of the talks given in the Saturday sessions of the fall 2020 General Conference (with occasional commentary in parenthesis)
*This is (mostly) written from a TBM pov, so I’ve glossed over many... unsavory things. That said, if you’re gonna quote this, definitely proofread it first because I occasionally switch to exmo pov.
Sunday Sessions (long version)
Sunday Sessions (shorter version)
Russel M Nelson
Hopeful, holy bullshit/look at all the spiritually awesome stuff we're doing/gonna do. (idk, there didn't really seem to be much of a talk there)
David A Bednar
Tests in school are as important as the tests of us living on earth.
"Prove, examine, and try."
"If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear."
Susan and I looked over our food storage and learned that we did well in most areas, but found some expired things we were afraid would unleash another global pandemic.
Remember, when loved ones die, and you don't know why, god does. It's a lesson in faith.
Scott D Whiting
How to be more like christ.
Wife and I were in Japan, hiking up a mountain; it was hard because altitude.
One step at a time is how we become more like christ.
Honesty is important, honesty with ourselves.
You can ask others how they view you, but god is a better person to ask, with his perfect view of us.
REPENT! to be the best version of ourselves. Change your heart and mind to be like christ.
Choose one attribute to focus on at a time. Constantly ask god for help, but don't be selfish.
"Be the tide that raises all boats in the harbor."
Recognize that desired attribute in others. Put in a lot of effort.
Caution- don't feel guilty, unworthy, or unloved; that is not what life is about.
You are good enough and loved, but that doesn't mean you're a perfect version of yourself.
Michelle D Craig
Story of Elijah for allegory of struggling to see how god is in your life.
Wait and trust in god. Pray for the lord to open your eyes. Understand how god sees you.
Ask yourself: what am I doing that I should stop and what should I be doing?
Stop looking at your phone. I think it's a good time to multitask, but the spirit told me to stop and the next day, while in line at the grocery store, I looked at the people around me instead. I saw old man and struck up a conversation with him based on what was in his cart (cat food). He said it was his birthday so I wished him a happy birthday. This guy needed me to see him.
A story of a friend who separated from her husband and hoped nobody would talk to her at church. A young woman kept looking back at her and came up to her after sacrament meeting. The young woman told her she loved her and they became friends and it helped her because she felt noticed and cared about.
Ask god to help you see others and act to affirm their lives. This is how we identify our own purpose.
Quentin L Cook
Righteousness. Female followers of brigham young found career opportunites in Utah and friends in the native americans. (Gave a whole bullshit Utah thanksgiving story, complete with rewriting history so white people can feel better about themselves for feeding the natives). There is unity in respect. Historically, we have not been perfect, but that is the goal. We don't need to have all the blessings of god to be righteous. Love god and fellow man to live in eternal peace and happiness with god. "Historical record" in 1 nephi shows there were no happier people because of righteousness. But then that society was destroyed so much that mormon asked how they would avoid punishment. We live in that latter time, not unity. Our challenge is to lift and bless society as a whole. Demonstrated by ethnic harmony and an all inclusive doctrine. Unity and diversity are not opposites. All races and colors are children of god. Laws written in god's chosen land (US) were written by imperfect men, but inspired by god for equal treatment of all men. Remember that we were onced very opressed because we wanted to share jesus' love. If you are not united, you are not god's children. Gosple culture is greater than regional cultures. We honor pioneers because of their struggles.
Ronald A Rasband
Supplying the world with temples is a holy duty.
Sacred ordinaces lead to exaltation.
"Temples rise above the ways of the world. Every temple... stand as testaments to our faith and eternal life and the joy of spending it with our families and heavenly father. They increase understanding of the godhead and the everlasting gospel and commitment to live and teach truth and our willingness to follow the example of jesus."
I learned an important lesson while visiting my father in law as he was dying; that temple recommends are important, even while dying.
The worthiness interview "is not about do's and dont's. It is about finding your worthiness and to testify of your devotion to the gospel teachings."
(I stopped paying attention for a while.)
Hunter said his biggest desire was to have every member hold a temple recommend.
Come get yo rec's! "Whether you have access to a temple or not, it is still important to remain and prove your worthiness."
(I'm really struggling to pay attention to this guy and holy shit he stressed "be patient" while I was typing that.)
Dallin H Oaks
"The lord's teachings are for eternity and for all of god's children."
My examples will be US-centric, but I'm sure that the issues the US face are universal, right?
Destrucitve behavior in political statements are not good.
Remember that JC said to love your enemies. Contention is of the devil, not JC. It isn't easy. Seek and ye shall find the strength to love.
Follow the laws of man.
Nobody can make us angry, it is our choice to be angry.
(Reference to The King and I-) learn about other people's culture.
Don't participate in rioting.
Wait, he's supporting the first ammendement- oh, the stress here is on the word "peaceful". We must do better to end racism. But remember to be peaceful! No violence. Anarchy is evil. Lincoln said "there is no greivance that is a fit object of redress by mob law". It undermines individual rights, not protects.
The US was started by diverse people! We're inherintly diverse! Here's a diverse (british) example!
AFTERNOON SESSION
D Todd Christofferson
There's a 2030 sustainable development agreement thingy. It's got 17 goals including- no poverty, no hunger, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and decent work. It is interesting and important.
More important is a sustainable society.
Two biblical examples: 1. The city of enoch. They were of one heart and one mind. 2. The 1st generations of nephites an lamanites. No envies nor strifes. No murders or lying. No happier people than them. Love thy neighbor. Every man seeking the interests of his neighbor. Virtues uphold these societies.
Then they became exceedingly wicked and millions died in wars amongst themselves.
"When people turn from a sense of accountability to god and begin to trust instead in the arm of flesh (?)", disaster lurks.
A good life is more important than a long life.
I'm so fucking blessed, so this really isn't a good topic for me, but here we are.
The light of christ is what uneducated people call a consience.
"When one has no higher god than himself, and seeks no greater good than satisfying his own appetites and preferences, the effects will be manifest in due course. A society, for example, in which individual consent is the only constraint on sexual activity is a society in decay. Adultery, promiscuity, elective abortion and out of wedlock births are but some of the bitter fruit that grow out of the immorality sanctioned by the sexual revolution." This leads to poverty and fatherless families, sometimes in multiple generations, and deficient education and mental destruction.
"Our joyous message is that there is a better way through god... (the core truths of this message are) god lives, he is the heavenly father of our spirits, that as a manifestation of his love, he's given us commandments that lead to a fullnes of joy with him, that JC is the son of god and our redeemer, that he suffered and died to atone for sins on condition of our repentance, that he rose from the dead, bringing to pass the resurrection of human kind, and that we will all stand before him to be judged."
Steven J Lund
My son had cancer. It was hard. He was in lots of pain, but still wanted to go to church even when his mom suggested he stay home. He knew he inspired others when they saw him there, representing the savior by willingly suffering to serve.
All youth programs are there to help them be more like JC.
They are surrounded by things that keep helping them do that, but they're still making mistakes, so parents and leaders need to step up (potterheads grab your wands).
Gerrit W Gong
Family of 10 is hated by neighbors, nobody likes them until their house burns down. Then they were showed kindness, hope, and understanding by their neighbors helping them.
"Our 2020 bicentenniel proclamation begins with the profoundly inclusive promise that god loves his children in every nation of the world. Each of us in every nation... god promises covenants, and invites us to come partake of his abundant joy and goodness. God's love for all people is affirmed throughout scripture that love encompasses the abrahamic covenent, gathering his scattered children, and his plan of happiness. In the house of faith, there are to be no strangers, no foreigners, no rich and poor, no outside others. As fellow citizens with the saints, we're invited to help the world for the better, from inside out; one person, one family, one neighborhood at a time. This happens when we share the gospel."
Church materials are available in many regions and languages. We're gonna focus on that for a while. (And I stopped paying attention again. This dude is boring af. And I have a high threshold for boring right now)
Talking about how members do charity work.
W Christopher Waddell
Some kid said it was the greatest day of his life to meet this guy who talks to the profit a couple of times a week. The story is given with the obvious topic of "we thank thee oh god for a prophet".
Prophets tell us to prepare for crisis.
We understand your struggles and want to express that there are better days ahead. Church leaders can help you.
The lord loves effort.
Have stores of food and money, but don't go to extremes in your efforts to establish those things.
We have a brochure on finances with quotes from people about how god will provide.
Remember Joseph in Egypt.
"All things are spiritual to the lord and not at any time has he given us a law which is temporal."
Manage your finances and have food storage.
Matthew S Holland
The feeling of Alma remembering his sins are as painful as passing a kidney stone (?!).
Repentance will bring us relief.
We have no idea how bad our suffering will be if we don't repent.
"Medical science, professional counseling or legal rectification can help alleviate such suffering but note, all good gifts including these, come from the savior. Regardless [of] the causes of our worst hurt or heartaches, the ultimate source of relief is the same: JC. He alone holds the full power and healing balm to correct every mistake, right every wrong, adjust every imperfection, mend every wound, and deliver every delayed blessing."
When you feel like nobody could understand your suffering, remember that jesus can.
"Suffering in righteousness helps qualify your for, rather than distinguishes you from, god's elect."
William K Jackson
An Indian dude didn't want to turn his back on his culture in order to convert with the rest of his family. But JC was able to open his eyes to a different viewpoint.
Our original culture is the culture of Adam and Enoch. It is the greatest of all cultures. There is no "us v them" mentality in the greatest of all cultures.
"We believe that we are responsible and accountable for ourselves, each other, the church, and our world. Faith in JC is the first principle of our culture, and obedience to his teachings and commandments is the outcome.”
“It is a culture of covenants and ordinances, high moral standards, sacrifice, forgiveness, repentance, and caring for the temple of our bodies. It is a culture of the preisthood, the authority to act in god's name, the power of god to bless his children. It edifies and enables individuals to be better people, leaders, mothers, fathers, and companions- and it sanctifies the home. In the culture of christ, women are elevated to their proper and eternal status. They are not subservient to men, as in many cultures in today's world, but full and equal partners here and in the world to come.”
“The family is the basic unit of eternity. The perfection of the family is worth any sacrifice" because, as has been taught, "no other success can compensate for failure in the home."
This culture is concerned with things of lasting worth.
It is inclusive, not exclusive.
"Because this culture results from the application of our savior's teachings, it helps provide a healing balm of which our world (cue crying) is in such desperate need. What a blessing it is to be a part of this grand and (voice wavering) *noble* way of life. The church is hardly a western society or an american cultural phenomenon. it is an international church, as it was always meant to be. New members from around the world bring richness, diversity, and excitement into our ever-growing family!" (hallelujah!)
Indian dude joined the church, of course.
"What a marvelous heritage (quiet sob) we all share!"
Dieter F Uchtdorf
Because of a threat from the US military, the SLC temple was buried during constrution. When the threat had passed, they excavated it and found that many stones in the foundation had cracked and were replaced. "Finally, the saints could sing How Firm a Foundation and know their holy temple was built on a foundation that would last for generations.”
“This story can teach us how god uses adversity to bring about his purposes." Which is an appropriate topic these days.
We mourn with those who have lost loved ones to covid.
"My message today is that even though this pandemic is not what we wanted or expected, god has prepared his children and his church for this time."
We will do more than survive, we will move forward and we will be better as a result.
We are like seeds that must be buried before they can sprout. "The love of god and blessing of the restored gospel of JC will bring something unimaginable to spring forth."
Hardships strengthen our character.
"What we learn from biblical examples? 1. The righteous are not given a free pass that allows them to avoid the valleys of shadow... 2. Our heavenly father knows that we suffer, and because we are his children, he will not abandon us..."
"Our best days are ahead of us, not behind us. This is why god gives us modern revelation."
(I stopped paying attention during an aviation allegory.)
Stories of new/potential converts going to appointments early because of excitement. "Our missionaries are busier than ever."
WOMEN'S SESSION
Sharon Eubank
Story of a kid rewarded with his favorite pie for doing chores. He was selfish when his sister asked if she and her friend could have some because they didn't earn it, but changed his mind later. This showed that he was willing to change and show kindness to those who didn't deserve it.
"By union of feeling, we obtain power with god."
I don't like this world. It sucks and I want to make it better and sometimes I feel powerless, but I have done lots of soul searching and have three suggestions.
1. Have mercy. Jacob 2:17, but replace the word "substance" with the word "mercy". We need more mercy in our ministering. "If you would have god have mercy on you, have mercy on each other."
2. Make your boat swing. Rowing definition: "swing" is when all are rowing in such perfect unison that not a single action is out of sync. Somehow, individuality is crucial to this; clones couldn't do it. "Differences can be turned to advantage instead of disadvantage." This makes you go fast and they won because of that.
3. Clear away the bad as fast as the good can grow. Jacob 5: good tree is planted in good ground but was corrupted. A servant asks that the tree be given another chance and then the tree grows good fruit. JC is like the owner of the vinyard, and gives us mercy, if we can give it to each other.
"I believe the change we seek in ourselves and in the groups we belong to will come less by activism and more by actively trying every day to understand one another" because we're building zion.
As women, we have broad influence to remove prejudice and build unity. "I offer this invitation: be part of a collective force that changes the world for good." We're supposed to help others. "The women of this church have the potential to change society."
Rebecca M Craven
(I... I can't focus on this woman long enough to piece together what the fuck she's saying. Sorry.)
I think the overall topic is changing yourself to atone/repent.
Cristina B Franco
This year has given us many surprises that have left us broken.
Personal story about getting a piano. One of the delivery guys slipped and broke it. The delivery guys went back to arrange the delivery of a new piano, but her husband asked if it could just be repaired instead. The manager said "the wood is broken, and once the wood is broken, it can never sound the same."
We are like the broken piano, feeling broken and that we'll never be the same again. "However, as we come unto JC by exercising faith in him, repenting, and making and keeping covenants, our brokenness, whatever it's cause, can be healed [by the savior's healing power to make us better than we were.]." Faith in god heals us.
Story of Alma where god promised to ease their burdens.
(Really long quote  from Alma that she doesn't source).
The savior is a refuge from the storm.
(Is there a rule that women can't have more than 20% original content in their talks? What is with all the quotes from other people, with barely anything to make them relate to each other?)
THAT'S MY HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR TEACHER DIRECTING THE SEPT 2014 CHOIR!!!
Bonnie H Cordon
JC is the light and the life of the world; the light that shines in the darkness.
Shit's been hard these last few months, but we see you praying and working hard to seek out JC.
Video
Gloomy shit and then "inspiring/soothing" pics of JC, then those same gloomy people are shown being happy while doing normal, everyday stuff. Lots of black people to show diversity and even a deaf woman signing in a video chat on her phone. (It's driving me crazy that i can't remember the song that's playing.) Then back to a pic of JC.
Henry B Eyring
"Every day we are approaching closer to the glorious moment when the savior JC will come to earth again."
"As the beloved daughters of heavenly father, and as the daughters of the lord JC in his kingdom, you will play a crucial part in the grand times ahead."
Prepare to live as the people in the city of enoch did.
Another unsourced quote of "what will happen in this last dispensation of the fulness of times": (was that wording really necessary?) dark skies, earthquakes, etc, but chosen people will be fine. They'll all be gathered into one place (that we could... maybee.... do something to? jk. unless...?).
Women will be at the heart of creating that society.
Quotes about the importance of women and the relief society.
Quotes about how pure and faithful the city of Enoch was.
"My experience has taught me that heavenly father's daughters have a gift to allay contention and to promote righteousness with their love of god and with the love of god they engender in those they serve." (fuck you)
Seeing a household without a preisthood member gave me glimpse of zion because the women were supportive and loving.
Why is it Oaks again?
"In the world, ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, i have overcome the world."
Today, "we are also troubled on every side, and we also need that same message not to despair, but to be of good cheer."
JC knows your wants and fears.
"Be of good cheer."
"Be of good cheer."
"Be of good cheer."
Opposition is essential (anyone know of that musical 'my turn on earth' or am i just old? I've got 'opposition' stuck in my head).
Shit sucks right now. Covid and election shit, the election shit is bad "the most severe many of the oldest of us can ever remember." People are dealing with "the many adversities of mortality: poverty, racism, sickness, job loss, wayward children, bad/no marriages, and the effects of sin" but "be of good cheer." (broken record much?)
Poor JS had lots of adversities! But he still managed to "maintain his native cheery temperament and the love and loyalty of his people." The pioneers had it hard, too, but they still "were of hope and good cheer."
(If I heard this right) The orignal missionaries were sent out for up to 7 years.
The presidency loves you and cares about you and we pray for you (y'all should look up 'ill pray for you' by Jaron Lowenstein, btw. i promise it's hilarious).
"There is boundless power in the doctrine of the restored gospel of JC. Our unshakeable faith in that doctrine guides our steps and gives us joy. It enlightens our minds and gives strength and confidence to our actions. This guidance and enlightenment and power are promised gifts we have recieved from our heavenly father. By understanding and conforming our lives to that doctrine, including the divine gift of repentance, we can be of good cheer as we keep ourselves on the path of eternal destiny, reunion, and exaltation with our loving heavenly parents." (sidenote- I typed that quote really fast with very few mistakes and I'm very proud of myself. I'm sure I've never typed that fast and correctly in my life.)
Russel M Nelson
Shit's been hard and different than normal.
We greive with the women who have experienced loss.
Social media is evil for young women, but "many of you have found ways to encourage others and share our savior's light."
The future gonna be lit, yo.
"If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear."
"Moroni prepared his people in three essential ways:”
“1. He helped them create areas where they would be safe; places of security, he called them.” "Create a home that is a place of security."
“2. He prepared the minds of the people to be faithful unto the lord.”  "Each time we have the faith to be obedient to god's laws, even when popular opinions belittle us, or each time we resist entertainment or ideaologies that celebrate covenant breaking, we are exercising our faith, which in turn increases our faith." "Life without god is a life filled with fear. Life with god is a life filled with peace."
“3. He never stopped preparing his people; physically or spiritually." "The adversary never stops attacking, so we can never stop preparing. The more self-reliant we are, temporally, emotionally, and spiritually, the more prepared we are to thwart satan's relentless assualts."
"We have so much to look forward to. The lord placed you here, now, because he knew you had the capacity to negotiate the complexities of the latter part of these latter days. He knew you would grasp the grandeur of his work and be eager to help bring it to pass. I am not saying that the days ahead will be easy, but I promise you that the future will be glorious for those who are prepared, and those who continue to prepare to be instruments in the lord's hands."
"Embrace the future with faith."

Jensen’s POV:
Jensen paced around his father’s office where his father, sister, brother, Clif, and a few other high ups in the Ackles pack tried to watch the security cameras to look for any sign of you coming out of the women’s bathroom. There was an outside entrance to the bathroom, and they figured that’s where the person or person’s had taken you when they left the bathroom with you. If you ever made it there.
Jensen couldn’t stop the growls falling from his lips as he eyed the security tapes. David Y/L/N was tied to a chair across from the large oak desk that they were all standing behind.
“Alan, I swear I don’t know what’s going on! If I knew where she was I’d tell you! I have no part in this you know that!!”
“I don’t know anything at this point, David, either way, this is a good lesson for you. This happened to my son’s Omega because of a male in your pack. So you need to learn there for that you are responsible as a pack leader for actions like these,” Alan stated calmly, not looking up from the computer screens.
One glare from Jensen and David shut up really quickly.
“There!!” Clif yelled, making everyone in the room jump.
There, on the video, was a man carrying you thrown over his shoulder toward a black SUV. Throwing you inside, before pulling out of the parking lot in a hurry.
Jensen wanted to cry, scream, and throw shit all at the same time. He didn’t know what to do, but he knew he wanted to do something.
“I recognize him. That’s one of Y/D/N bodyguards. Looks like Y/N’s dad was to damn chicken to come to do the dirty work himself. So he sent his bodyguard to do it for him.” Clif said. Typing away on his computer.
“I can pull up the traffic camera footage and see which direction he went in, me and my men will start the hunt from there. We’re gonna find her Jensen.” Clif said, he’d been Jensen’s friend for a long time now, and he could see Jensen was just about to snap.
“If her dad wasn’t here himself, then where is he?” Jensen snapped, crossing the floor in only three strides of his long legs, and hoving over David with malice written across his face.
“Hom,e last I check,” David said, too fearful of what the Ackles was going to do to him at this point to withhold any information he might know. Y/D/N got himself into this, he can get himself out of it. Though by the look on the Alpha’s face standing directly in front of him he didn’t see his brother getting out of this alive.
Jensen reached up and hit David hard enough to knock him out. He had, had just about enough of looking at his face, and didn’t want him to hear what he was about to say next.
“I’m going to her dad’s, and one way or another he's going to tell me where he’s keeping my Omega, and why.” Jensen snatched up his jacket and went to go out of the door.
“Stay here son, we will have him fetched. I’ve already sent a detail to have him removed from the home, remember there are innocent people in there with him. We don’t want to cause them any harm. They have no part in this. Let’s just deal with the source.”
Alan’s voice was calm, but his eyes held the same rage as his sons. He hated to see his son in this much distress. He always had a soft spot for Jensen, and everyone in the family knew it. Now, looking at him this desperate, it made his blood boil.
“What if we don’t get to her in time Dad? We’re wasting time!” Jensen yelled, frustration getting harder and harder to control.
“He’s been collected. He should be here within five minutes.” A young Alpha Jensen didn’t recognize stood just inside his father’s office door and announced. Alan thanked the young man, and he excused himself quickly.
“Her father is on his way here. We will get to the bottom of this son. She’s going to be just fine.”
Just as Jensen was about to argue the point, Josh cleared his throat from across the room. Making all heads turn toward him.
“Jensen, your Omega was wearing a mating collar wasn’t she?” he asked, approaching his brother cautiously.
“Yes,” Jensen said, obviously not following his brother’s train of thought.
“Where did you purchase it?”
Jensen stood there thinking for a second getting annoyed with the twenty questions when his Omega was out there and in danger.
“From the family jeweler here in Dallas. Same place you all got your Omega’s there’s.”
A smile broke out over his brother's face.
“Jensen, the reason we have those collars made at that particular place is because they put tracking devices inside the collars. If we turn on her GPS locator on her collar we can find her down to the street! It will just take about 30 minutes to get it all up and running.”
Jensen stood there stock-still in the middle of the floor.
“What if they took it off of her? Threw it somewhere random on the way.”
The room was so still you could hear a pin drop. All eyes on Josh and Jensen.
“They can’t. You are the one that put it on her. It would take your fingerprints to release the clasp. There’s no way they could get it off of her.”
Just as Jensen was about to open his mouth and tell them ‘well what the fuck are you waiting for’ the door opened. The young Alpha poking his head just inside.
“Excuse me, sir. Y/D/N is here. He’s locked down in the basement.”
Alan turned to Jensen.
“Go, get what you can out of her father. Do whatever you have to do. I’ll take care of the rest…”
A look of understanding crossing between father and son that was enough to make a cold shiver run down everyone in the room’s spine.  “We will track down your Omega, and then come and retrieve you when we have her location.”
Jensen nodded and followed the young Alpha to the door of the basement. Where he opened it for him and stood aside. Letting Jensen descent the stairs on his own.
Jensen was livid. His eyes flashing red in intervals as he descended the stairs. Taking off his white dress shirt at the end of the stairs, and hanging it there. leaving him just in his undershirt and slacks.  He could hear y/n father cursing at him, and everyone else in the house as he rounded the corner. Seeing the man tied to the chair.
“Hello Y/D/N…” Jensen drew out. Y/N's father stopped yelling immediately.
Staring down Jensen like if he could kill him with his bare hands he would.
“You know Jensen all this is your fault! If you would have just taken your rightful place in your pack you would still have your Omega right now, but since I can’t have what I want, you can’t have what you want. Simples as that.” The smile that spread across his face made Jensen’s vision go red, and his stomach churns all at the same time.
“You will tell me what you did with y/n.” He said, Leaning over the man that was tied to the chair.
“Oh really I am, and what makes you think I would do a thing like that?” He mouthed back.
Jensen didn’t have time to think before his first made contact with the man’s mouth. Blood running down his now busted lip.
“Let’s try that again.. Where is my Omega?”
This time the man said nothing. Just sat there staring at Jensen, a sinister smirk spread across his face.
“You know, before I came here tonight with Y/n I promised her something…. I promised her I would protect her. You made me break that promise.. I don't appreciate that. I’ll be spending the rest of my life making it up to her….”
Jensen’s vision was starting to go completely red, he was losing what little bit of control he had left. His temper was getting harder and harder to control, and he knew if he kept up this little game he was going to lose it.
“Mr. Ackles! We found her! They’re holding her in an abandoned warehouse down by the lake.”
The young Alpha happily reported to his elder in the pack. Jensen nodded his head.
“Give me two minutes... “ he said, his eyes never left Y/N’s father, and he knew by the look on his face that it was y/n’s true location.
“You know Y/D/N, I made Y/n another promise. This one I intend to keep. What to know that promise was?”
Jensen leaned over the chair. Holding either side of the man’s shoulders.
“What’s that?” he tried to sound cocky, but it was laced in fear.
“I told her if you tried anything I’d rip your throat out….. With my teeth…”
Jensen’s vision went red, All he saw was red…
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Less than an hour later Jensen’s SUV in the lead, the convoy pulled up to the old warehouse where y/n’s GPS was showing her location.
Jensen jumped out of the SUV before the car even fully came to a stop. Running into the building. Calling for his Omega, praying with everything in him that he wasn’t too late…
He went from room to room. Searching, and so far nothing, no guards, no nothing. Fear gripped him deep in his gut. What if they had it wrong? What if she wasn’t here?
Then just when panic pulled at the corner of his subconscious, he did what she should have done instead of running around like an idiot. Stopping the stilling himself. Taking a deep breath, at first nothing. His heart sank in his chest, but he tried again. Taking an even deeper breath, walking a little deeper into the warehouse.
That’s when he caught it. Her scent, he would know it if he was clinically dead….
Running toward the upstairs office looking room he began to pound on the door. He could smell her stronger now, he knew she was in there. She just had to be.
Finally, with one kick of his foot the door caved, and swung open hitting the wall hard.
At first, he didn’t see her, then as his eyes adjusted to the darkroom walking around the desk following his sense he found her. Laying on the cold hard ground of the warehouse office floor.
Falling to his knees he didn’t know much after that. He remembers screaming for his father. He remembered the paramedics rushing into the warehouse where he was sitting on the floor with her cold body pressed to his as tight as he could hold her.
He remembered his father and his brother having to hold him back while the paramedics looked her over.
He remembered all of this, but it was like walking through a clouded blur.
Finally, a young Omega girl dressed in a paramedics outfit came to stand in front of him and addressed him directly. Jensen shook himself hard enough to pull himself out of his fog. Even though it was hard.
“Mr. Ackles, your Omega is going to be just fine. She’s just sedated. We can’t even find an injury on her. We want to take her to the hospital of your choosing so she can be monitored while she sleeps off the sedative, and maybe they can give her something to counteract it.”
He stood there for a moment, trying to catch his breath. Relief flooded his system as he processed the news that his Omega was going to be okay.
“Mr. Ackles? Do you want us to transport her to Dallas…”
“NO!” Jensen snapping back to himself jumped up to his feet. Even though the threat had been handled. He didn’t want to stay in Dallas. He said he was going to take her home, and that’s what he intended to do.
“Take her to Austin State Hospital.” Jensen said. Walking over to the medical gurney that they had loaded y/n onto. His heart clenching in his chest at the sight before him. He wanted more than anything to crawl into the gurney with her and hold her more than anything else in the world.
“Mr. Ackles… That’s a long drive from here…” The young girl said. Afraid to confront the Alpha who was obviously distress about his Omega and her current state.
“Don’t worry about it. We will just call in a med flight. With a chopper, we can have them both there within the hour.” The older paramedic said. Walking out of the warehouse ahead of the gurney and Jensen who was holding as tightly to Y/n’s hand as he could.
“We’re going home, sweetheart. We’re going home…”

J hangs the towel I let him on the line I set on my balcony. I set it myself because there’s something so comforting and relaxing for me about watching clothes hanging from the line. I think it reminds me of my Nana because she always seems to have something on the line. That’s crazy, really, because there was just my Nana and my Papa so it’s technically impossible that they had washing every day but that’s what I remember. It’s just costumbrist and I like it.
With his short blond hair still wet he takes a seat in front of Coco and me. He told us both the story between sobs and fits of crying on the way home. The bastard of David had dumped him forty minutes away by car from Grad because Jason told him he had gotten an acceptance letter from a hospital in New York. It’s for an internship in the summer, two months in New York learning Medicine. And the bastard, instead of being happy and proud, threw him out of the car. I’ve tried to keep it together and not tell him I’ve planned nine different ways of killing David and get away with it. He probably doesn’t need to hear that now. His green eyes are still bloodshot from all the crying but his breathing is back to normal. The warm shower did him good. He smiles when his eyes finally set on us.
“Thank you, guys, really. I don’t know what would have been of me without you girls.”
“Marie would have gone pick you up.” I tell him.
He smiles and nods but the smile doesn’t reach his eyes.
“How are you feeling?” Coco asks.
Jason gives her a look before he sighs and shrugs.
“Embarrassed.” He confesses. “And silly and humiliated.”
“What are you going to do now?”
“I’m going to break up with him, obviously.” He raises his eyebrows at my question. “I mean I’m not even sure we’re still together. I should have told him about the internship sooner.”
“What?” I can’t believe him. “That has nothing- absolutely nothing to do with what he did. What he did was wrong and he’s sick. I mean, even if you had told him something wrong, which you didn’t, but even if you had told him- I don’t know that you had cheated on him- it doesn’t justify that he fucking dumped you in the middle of the highway, J!”
“I know. I’m not saying that.”
“You’re justifying him! Again!”
“I’m not!” He yells.
I know Coco is uncomfortable by the way she’s sunk down on her chair but I don’t care. Jason needs to hear this.
“Yes, you are! You keep trying to turn him into this guy he’s not!”
“You don’t know him, Indie!”
“That’s right! He doesn’t let us! He keeps trying to take you away from us! I mean what kind of boyfriend doesn’t try to get involved into his partner’s life! He’s never even tried to talk to me.”
“Well he knows you have an opinion.”
“Of course I have an opinion! He’s a violent abuser!”
“He suffered a lot when he was a child! Do you know what it’s like to be abandoned by your dad? No, you don’t!” He cuts me off when I’m about to talk. “And he’s good, he just has a bad temper and anger issues but he’s trying to get better, okay?”
“Is he? Is he even going to therapy?”
“He doesn’t believe in therapy…”
I chuckle a mad laugh of crazy woman.
“That’s what they all say, J. Abusers justify their abuse with a dark past and they made you feel sorry for them so they can still hurt you over and over. He’s manipulating you, can’t you see it? You have to take that idea of your mind that you’re going to fix him because you won’t! He needs help, professional help, and you can’t give him that. I’ll tell you more, you’re perpetuating his toxic behaviour by allowing it.”
“That’s rich coming from you. You’re just projecting Javier on him, but David is not Javier, Indie.”
“Yes, he is! And I know because you’re doing all the things I used to do! Don’t you remember? You told me to break up with him a thousand times and I didn’t because I loved him and I also thought he was good deep down because he could be sweet too but that was only him being manipulative too… And I thought he would change for me too, that he loved me… But… It’s not your responsibility to try to help someone who keeps hurting you. Moreover, you can’t even do it. This is dangerous for you and for him.”
“Don’t even try to pretend like you care about him.”
“Of course I don’t. I care about you. And I’m not happy with what happened to you today, Jason” I start seeing him blurry until I can’t see him anymore and so I wipe my tears away with my hands. “But you need to break up with him, he’s no good for you or for anyone and he needs to get his shit together. What he did to you today was sick, J. You cannot forgive that.”
I feel his arms wrapping around me before I take my hands away from my eyes. And he rests his chin on top of my head like he had done so many times before. JJ’s always been there for me. He was there when Dylan died and he was there during his funeral and during all the months that follow that seemed to be my own slow, never-ending funeral; and then he was there for me every time Javier would do something twisted and when I left him too. I wrap my smaller arms around his broad back and rest my ear against where his heart is, feeling that old familiar heartbeat.
“I love you, Indie.”
“I love you too.”
“Aww.”
Jason laughs and tilts his neck to see a teary Coco. My sister is so emotional all the time, just like my Mum. I feel his chest rumbling when he laughs.
“Get in here, Coconut.”
She smashes her face against mine and from the corner of my eye I can see her smiling with her eyes closed. She loves a hug, too.
We hear my Mum’s laughter before we hear our friends coming. She walked with them towards my wing.
“Baby, the girls are here.” She says on the door. “Coco and I are going out but order something for dinner for you guys.”
It’s not strange for me that my mum speaks English to me. Usually we speak Spanish but she always says she remembers how she felt when her English wasn’t that good and she would hear my dad’s family speak English and laugh but wouldn’t understand much. She says she doesn’t want our friends to feel like that.
“What time is it?”
I haven’t checked my phone all day.
“It’s 4 pm, honey.” She smiles. “Are you high?”
I roll my eyes at her and she giggles. She knows I’m not. Coco kisses Jason’s cheek before she gives a quick hug to Ollie and Marie and follow my mum outside.
“Hasta luego, Blue.”
“Bye, doofus.” My sister grins as she leaves.
Despite being twenty years old, sometimes she acts like she’s twelve.  Marie and Ollie fight like a married couple about who locked the door when they went out before Ollie deploys an army of candy and junk food on the table. Jason looks at them amused.
“We brought the break up kit.” Olivia smiles.
“Because we’re breaking up with David Dick, aren’t we?”
My eyes widen at Marie and Olivia kicks her feet “discreetly”. Marie’s lips part and her eyes widen in horror of her realization too.
“Is that how you guys call him?” Jason tries to keep a straight face but the three of us see his hidden smile.
“You did say he had a big dick.” Ollie shrugs.
“And he’s a dick.” Marie adds.
Jason finally bursts out laughing. And the three of us join him before Olivia motions for us to hug him and the three of us surround him like he was an oak tree and we were trying to get positive energy.
Then the four of us sit on the table and eat chocolates and lollies without even realizing Jason and I haven’t even had lunch. Jason tells Ollie and Marie the full story and the two of them tell him David’s such a jerk and that not him neither anyone deserves that kind of treatment.
“Anyway what happened last night with Mario?” Jason asks Ollie.
I tilt my neck slowly so I’m facing my friend and she avoids my eyes looking down at the liquorice she’s eating. The last time we talked Mario was Mario who? and had clumsy hands. I suck my lips inside my mouth trying to hide my smile.
“So?”
“We didn’t have sex.” Ollie blushes.
“What?” The three of us ask in unison.
“It didn’t go well?” Jason asks.
“Wait, I need some context!”
“Right, you weren’t there.” Jason’s eyes widen.
“Mario came with Harry. Apparently they were together in O’Clock so when Harry said he was going Mario asked if he was going to see you and he said yes because apparently Harry’s got verbosity” Marie tells me and I chuckle. He really does sometimes. “And so he tagged alone in case you were with Ollie. Isn’t that romantic?” Marie looks at me like the heart eyed emoji and I smirk.
“But you were talking to that guy.” I interrupt.
“Well, we stopped talking.” She shrugs. “I don’t know what’s going on with your lips, Indie.” She points out all my hidden smiles. “But yeah then he came, we were drinking we danced, we kissed and I went home with him.”
Maybe he really does have clumsy hands and that’s why they didn’t have sex but then why is she leading him on?
“It didn’t go well after you left?”
“It was perfect.”
“Then?”
“It didn’t happen.” She shrugs.
There’s something going on with Mario for Ollie to act this way. I’ll ask Harry. Mario and Harry are friends and Harry’s nosy beyond believe. He’ll tell me.
“And you?” I ask Marie.
“What about me?”
“The redhead.” I smile.
“He burped.” She pouts as her eyebrows frown like Emile Clarke’s.
We all burst into laughter but she keeps pouting despite her growing smile.
“And you can’t judge me because you dumped Álvaro for no reason and he was so cute.”
“And Spanish.” Olivia adds.
Jason celebrates Álvaro’s nationality too and I roll my eyes. I don’t care that he’s Spanish. I mean I like meeting Spanish people because they remind me of my mum’s heritage and I can speak Spanish to them but there’s nothing else you know about a person if you know they’re Spanish. I mean you know where they were born. That’s it. Then for what is worth, every person is their own person.
“But you left with Harry, didn’t you?” Olivia’s eyes widen.
“Wait were you with Harry when I called in the morning?”
I nod.
“Shit, dude, I’m sorry! I didn’t know. I thought you guys had cut things off.”
“Yes, but a leopard never changes its spots.” Olivia shrugs.
I roll my eyes. My eyes set on Marie and I can read her disapproving expression.
“He offered to drive to get you in the morning.” I defend him. “And he…”
I was about to tell them about how he showered me with compliments but I decide that should stay between us. I don’t have to prove anything about him to Marie or to anyone else for that matter.
“That was sweet of him.”
Thinking about Harry makes me think I haven’t checked my phone all day. Maybe I should call him? Let him know everything’s fine? But what am I thinking? That he’s going to be waiting for me to tell him about my adventures with The Golden Girls? I blush at the idea.
“You’re not falling for Harry, are you?”
“What?” I frown. “No! Of course not! He’s such an idiot!”
Because he is. Sometimes. When he guesses things about me assuming I’m a posh bitch or when he tells me I have many flaws or when he pulls away for no better reason after confusing me with affection. Plus, he’s said it himself; it’s just sex.
“If only you felt something for him…” Marie adds.
Her words shock me.
“What?”
“Well if you were dating maybe the rest of doctors wouldn’t look down on you as bad as they will when they know about you two.”
“They won’t know.”
“They will too.”
“Does Harry burp, Indie?” Jason changes the topic, God bless him, and the three of us chuckle.
“Not in front of me, no.”
“But anyway I didn’t know about this redhead, Marie.” Jason wiggles his eyebrows but she just rolls her eyes.
“There’s nothing to know, Jason.” She sighs and rests her chin on her hand. “I need love, not burps.”
“You need to stop thinking your prince will arrive on a white horse and fuck some guy so you’ll forget about it.” Olivia tells her.
I laugh at her cheekiness.
“What Olivia’s trying to say” I correct “is that being single is also fun. You don’t need to have a boyfriend, Marie; but maybe your obsession with finding love is overshadowing it?”
Maria shakes her head.
“No, it’s not that. I know I don’t need a man but I just… I want to be in love, you know? And I want someone to love me. I’m tired of being alone…”
I give her a sympathetic smile.
“Don’t lose hope, Marie Anne” Olivia wraps an arm around her shoulders and rest her cheek on top of her head “it’ll come.”
“Love?”
She looks up at Olivia, confused that our less romantic friend says that. To be honest, I’m confused too.
“No, sillyhead, mind-blowing sex.” The three of us laugh. “Like the one Indie has with Harry.”
I chuckle and roll my eyes. She’s such an idiot. I don’t know why I’m laughing.
“Did you know he’s from Bellamond?” I tell them.
The three of them look at me with wide eyes and I tell them the little I know about him. Jason hands me my phone over.
“Talking about the devil…” He smirks.
I’ve never replied faster to a text.
Harry: How’s your friend?
Indie: A lot better, thank you.
“Look at that smile!” Jason teases and I swat him away playfully.
Indie: Thanks for asking.
Harry: No problem 😊 And you? How are you?
Indie: I’m good thanks
Harry: My blunt Indie
Indie: I’m not yours.
Harry: haha you’re so curt is even funny
Indie: I’m sorry I didn’t text you back before. I’ve been with my friends all day.
Harry: No problem.
Harry: What are you doing now?
Indie: We’re just hanging at my house
Harry: Would you like to have a drink?
Indie: All of us?
Harry: I mean it’s you I want to see but they can come too
“Aw, he’s adorable!”
When I lift my head from my phone, I see my three friends are behind me reading my texts. I blush and bring my phone to my chest covering the screen.
“Guys, you’re the worst!”
Jason stands up and walks towards my room. He comes back with his shoes on his hands.
“Tell him we’re coming and ask him for the location.”
“Yay!” Marie throws her head back. “Indie, do you have lipstick?”
“But you bite your lips a lot and stain your teeth!” Olivia reminds her.
“But what if Harry has a cute friend? Or what if the waiter is cute?”
Jason rolls his eyes and Olivia and Marie disappear on my bathroom in the search for my lipsticks.
“Are you sure you want to go?” I ask him.
“Damn right.” Jason smiles. “It’d only do me good.” He shrugs. “Plus we can’t leave your man like that.”
“Harry’s not my man.”
“Whatever.” He chuckles.
Indie: Where are you?
Harry: Cahoot
The pub is dark like the ones Jason likes and there’s quite a lot of people inside but it’s not suffocating. I spot Harry straight away. He’s leaning his elbow on the bar and is talking to Mario who gives us his back. I look at Ollie and find her talking to Marie and doing a scan of the bar, surely looking for possible prince charming for the brunette.
I wonder how I’m going to greet Harry. Should I give him a hug? Or a kiss? Or shake hands? His grin widens when he sees me as I reach him in the bar.
“Hello, Indie.”
I smile back. Okay so no hug, no kiss, no handshake.
“Hi there, Indie!” Mario seems happier to see me than Harry himself.
“Hi, Mario. How are you?”
“I’m good, good.” He smiles. “How are you?”
“I’m good too. Are you guys alone?”
Jason greets them both and so do Marie and Ollie. I notice the way Mario’s hand rests on Ollie’s lower back as he presses a kiss on her cheek but my friend looks away.
“No.” Mario shakes his head. “We’re on that table there. There’s a bunch of people from the hospital. You might know some of them.”
My eyes widen as I look at Harry. He knows I don’t want people to know we’re sleeping together in Uni but he just shakes his head and frowns as if dismissing Mario’s words. The Golden Girls order our drinks before we join them on the booths they have taken on a corner of the pub.
Harry’s got an empty spot beside him and I wonder whether he did that on purpose or whether it just was there because after his greeting I doubt he even wants to sit down next to me. I also notice, even from afar, the beautiful blonde sitting next to him. She’s everything I’m not. She’s thin, like, extremely thin actually, and her skin is paler than mine. She’s blonde but her hairstyle reminds me of my own, she has long opened bangs that skim her cheekbones just like me and her face is just perfect. Yeah, that’s the way to describe her, perfect. Her lips are full and pink and her nose is small and delicate and her eyes are olive green.
Olivia motions to Marie for her to sit down next to Mario so she doesn’t have to but Marie refuses to and even though I don’t agree with whatever the hell it is she’s doing with him, I take that seat before they give a scene- and so I don’t have to sit down next to Harry too. I see him frown from the corner of my eye.
“Hello, I’m Rose.” She’s nice too.
“I’m Indie.” I tell her.
“Indie?” Her green eyes widen. “Where does it come from?”
“It’s… It’s a colour.” My face contorts in embarrassment. “My name’s Indigo Blue. And it’s my mum’s favourite colour. She’s a painter.”
“Wow!” Rose smiles. “That’s so cool.”
From the corner of my eye I see Harry smiling next to her. Olivia sat down next to Harry eventually but he isn’t paying any attention to her and he must be the first man to ever do that. Instead, his eyes are on me the entirety of the night.
We all talk about music and Mario seems interested in Extremoduro. I tell him about them and about my favourite Spanish artists and he asks me stuff and even gets his phone out to type down the songs I tell him. See? He’s such a nice guy. I widen my eyes at Olivia and point at him every time he says something cute but she just gives me warning looks and cuts the air in front of her throat threatening to kill me.
Marie wants to dance and she takes Ollie with her who’s dying to get out of the table anyway. Jason’s been chatting to another two guys about God knows what and Harry’s been mostly quiet even though as nosy as he is I suspect he’s been eavesdropping every conversation on the table. Rose’s chatted to him some too but she’s also been talking to another girl who’s sitting in front of me. I think her name is Cris.
My eyes meet Harry’s but I quickly look away and turn to Mario yet his brown eyes are set on Olivia as she dances. I look at my friends too before I give him a sympathetic smile.
“Olivia is…” I start.
“Incredible.” He cuts me off.
I smile. Yeah, that too. But I wasn’t going to say that.
“Where did you go when you guys had dinner?”
That seems like a good way to start coming around it. I normally wouldn’t be so meddling but alcohol removes my inhibitions like autumn takes the leaves of a tree. I rest my elbow on the table and then my cheek on my hand so I stop taking glances at Harry from the corner of my eye.
“We went to this Indian restaurant she suggested...” His brown eyes narrow as he thinks about the name.
My blood freezes on my veins.
“The Siddharta?” I fear.
“Yeah!” He smiles. “That’s the one.”
“Oh.”
“You know it too?” He chuckles. “She seems to go there so much even the waiter knew her.”
“Jack?” I can’t believe her.
“Yes.” He looks at me as if we were very strange people. “You guys love Indian food, don’t you?”
“Yes, we do.” I try to hide how angry I am. “I’m gonna order another drink, you want one?”
“I’m fine, thank you. Do you want me to go with you?”
Stop being such a good guy! Olivia’s gonna hear me.
“No, that’s fine. Thanks.” I give him a smile.
I need another drink. Especially because I need to calm down before I yell at Olivia. I don’t know why it bothers me so much that he’s using Mario like that. Well, yes I know; because that’s not what you do to people and I don’t want my friends to be terrible people. My frown feels heavy as I wait for my Bulldog gin and tonic.
“That was an interesting seat choice.”
Harry’s voice makes my belly flip. I swallow at his proximity.
“Your greeting choice was also interesting.”
I shut my eyes internally but on the outside I just look away from him. Why am I such a bigmouth when I drink? When I look back at him, he’s grinning. He presses his body against mine and corners me against the bar.
“Did my girl want a especial greeting?”
“I’m not your girl.” I frown.
“Then why do you want a special greeting?” He’s still grinning.
“Because… Well, because, you said you wanted to see me so…”
“So?” I want to slap that stupid grin out of his face.
“So I was expecting…” I bring my hand to my forehead but mostly to protect my face from his because I’m desperate to kiss him. “Actually, I don’t know what I was expecting.”
“Well” He tacks a strand of hair behind my ear “I, on the other hand, can tell you I was expecting you to sit next to me.”
“You seemed busy.” I look away again.
What am I doing? I can’t be jealous. Wait, am I jealous? What the hell am I doing? I need to get out of here.
“I gotta go.”
But his fingers lift my chin and his lips press against mine. I drink from his mouth contently and my breath catches on my throat when I feel his tongue parting my lips. His hands snake around my waist and he pulls my body to him as we kiss and my hands find the back of his neck.
“Hello, baby.” He smiles against my lips.
He’s intoxicating.
“Hello.”
“You said you didn’t want people from the hospital to know.” He shrugs. “That’s why I didn’t kiss you.”
“No, yeah, you’re right. I am just drunk.”
I don’t know why I said that. I don’t mean that. I wanted that kiss and I would kiss him again, drunk or not. But I don’t want things between us to get… complicated.
“As lovely as usual.”
“I need to talk to Olivia.”
“Fine.”
He moves aside so I can walk away from him and towards my friends, already angry and anxious. When I reach them, they’re both dancing to some lame background song and of course they’re the centre of attention of a group of guys.
“Olivia” I grab her elbow and push her even farther away from Harry’s friends “why did you go to The Siddharta with Mario?”
Her pink cheeks confirm my suspicion. From the corner of my eyes, I can see Marie’s lips parting as she stares at Olivia too. I let her talk even though I know the answer.
“It’s a good restaurant.”
“You don’t like Indian food.”
“I thought he might like it..”
“You went there to get Jack jealous?” She swallows and looks away from me. “Olivia! It’s been a year!”
“I saw him the other night.” She explains. “I… He was with her and they went to my dad’s jeweller’s. He did that on purpose.”
“And you played his game?”
“What did you want me to do, Indie? I just wanted to get back to him! And I was going to go out with Mario anyway. The only thing that changed was the place.” She shrugs.
“Is that why you keep leading him on? You said he had clumsy hands and that you didn’t like him and you went home with him last night. Do you just want him there so you can get your ex jealous?”
“Indie, this is none of your business.” She looks away from me but her lips are set on a thin line.
“Well someone has to tell you you’re acting like a bitch.”
“What? I’ve had enough, Indigo. Go fuck yourself or better be the canned vagina you are these days.”
Her words freeze me to the spot and I feel a hurricane unleashing on my chest until it reaches my throat. I can’t believe she just said that. She’s been doing this fuck-and-leave thing for a year now and not even once I’ve judged her and now she throws this at my face? Is that what she really thinks of me? Is that what Harry thinks too? Is that even what I am?
I walk away before she sees me crying, I won’t give her the satisfaction and I don’t stop walking until I’ve turn the corner. I left my jacket inside and it’s rather cold now but I’ll text Marie to grab it for me.
I’ve never been punched on the throat but I reckon this is how it must feel like. It’s hard to breathe and I feel betrayed, beaten and dirty. I walk home. My tears keep rolling freely down my cheeks while my mind goes into a frenzy.
Jason’s words resound in my mind “you’re not falling for Harry, are you?” No, of course, I’m not. We have nothing in common, other than Medicine, but that’s in no way reason enough and he’s nothing like what I... I’m not looking for that. Now or ever.
And then it hits me why it bothered me to see him with that Rose girl. It wasn’t jealousy, it was just the fact that I’m not ready to be a canned vagine. I mean I thought I didn’t care at all that he would be with other girls and I don’t think I do but for him to be with other women and for me to see that are two different things. The fact that he called me and told me to come over even if he didn’t event plan on kissing me, then why the hell did he call me if he was with other girl?
The thought that he might have wanted a threesome with Rose and me flahes through my mind like a falling star. He’s clearly into sex in a way I might not be ready for. He probably has done it before too and maybe that’s what he wants from me now.
My head aches too and I feel it dull and full and suddenly I feel so tired and cold and I just want to cover my head with my blanket and cry myself to sleep.
That’s what I do.

High School Confidential

Beverly Hills, 90210 Gets Its Heat from a Dangerously Cute Cast of TV's Hottest New Stars CONFIDENTIAL MEMO: FROM: The Vice Principal TO: The Faculty, High School U.S.A. I'm sure I don't need to remind you what happened when we didn't prepare for Bart Simpson last fall. The school was flooded with rude, antieducational T-shirts. Some cows were had. Well, as a new school year gets under way, I believe we face another daunting challenge: Brace yourselves for Beverly Hills, 90210. That's the Fox drama about unworldly twin teens Brandon and Brenda Walsh (played by Jason Priestley and Shannen Doherty), recent transferees from Minneapolis to the Hills of Beverly. There they struggle to assimilate into the fast-lane lifestyle of West Beverly Hills High School, where the kids come equipped with BMWs, call waiting and designer surfboards. In the process, the teens examine their emerging identities and the problems that adolescents everywhere face.

The show languished in the Nielsen ratings against Thursday powerhouse Cheers last year. But Fox had no replacement, so it stayed. While we were on summer vacation, new 90210 episodes began airing, and the show landed in the Top 20, becoming the most popular show among teenagers. To some extent, I take responsibility for having ignored 90210. I made the mistake of reading newspaper critics instead of my daughter's diary, and so I believed, as Howard Rosenberg sniffed in the Los Angeles Times, that the show was merely a "ZIP code for stereotypes and stock characters." Little did I know that this show would mesmerize teens by doing emotionally realistic shows that involved adolescent rebellion, alcoholic; parents, a breast-cancer scare and plenty of worrisome teen sex. "Most shows for adolescents," says 90210 creator Darren Star, "seem like they are written by 50-year-olds who think teenagers behave like 7-year-olds."
Tumblr media
It also doesn't hurt that the show's male stars, Priestley and Luke Perry (who plays brooding loner Dylan McKay), are "to die for," as my daughter puts it. These two have each been receiving about 1,500 fan letters a week. So be vigilant: Surely some of these will be written by our students...during class! And I'm afraid that 90210 is only going to get bigger with our kids, if producer Aaron Spelling is to be believed. "I thought The Mod Squad and Charlie's Angels got a lot of publicity in their heyday," says Spelling, whose company produced those shows, "but it doesn't compare to this. It's crazy. We have merchandising coming out of our ears"—a complete line of T-shirts, beach towels, notebooks, etc. "And now these actors can't walk down the street!"
Tumblr media
Or even streak through malls. You probably saw those alarming news reports about a frenzied mob of 10,000 fans that stampeded Perry when he appeared at a south Florida mall last month. "It's a little scary," says Perry. Scarier is the amount of time students will waste this fall discussing Luke. And Jason. And who is sexier. I provide some information on the two. Jason Priestley, 22, plays Brandon Walsh, a model of thoughtful level-headedness. In real life, however, the brown-haired, blue-eyed star, who started acting in commercials at age 4 and played an orphan on that very nice NBC sitcom Sister Kate, is no Oliver Twist. He likes dirt bikes, bungee jumping and is a chain-smoker (just about the whole cast puffs it up—but not on-camera). Vancouver-born Priestley likes to hang out in Las Vegas. As for his real romantic life, he was reportedly dating actress Robin (Doogie Howser, M.D.) Lively last spring, but it seems likely that now he is too busy for such dalliance;. He must be on the set 14 hours a day, five days a week. To avoid ever-present fans, Priestley says, "I look different from my character when I'm just walking around. I don't shave, I don't dress like Brandon."
Tumblr media
On the show, 26-year-old Luke Perry (Brenda Walsh's boyfriend, Dylan) sports a leather jacket, dagger sideburns and a squint that spells t-r-o-u-b-l-e. Although he grew up and graduated from high school in Fredericktown, Ohio, he seems to have attended James Dean wise-guy classes. Perry, who played country-boy Ned Bates on the ABC soap Loving, entertains the 90210 cast by strutting around bare-chested making jokes. Does he have a girlfriend? "No. You know how I can get in touch with Linda Hamilton?" What kind of music does he listen to? "Tom Jones is awesome." Are he and Priestley ever mistaken for each other? "He's mistaken for me on his good days." And 90210, he says, is "the best show on television, except for Jeopardy!" We should act quickly, faculty, when we see any signs that Beverly Hills, 90210 is disrupting normal student activity.
Tumblr media
How abnormal might things get? Consider: "It's almost like there are cults," says Brian Austin Green, 18, the North Hollywood High grad who plays the cutely dweeby David Silver. "Girls go to school the day after the show, and they actually become these characters. They say, 'Okay, today I want to be Dylan, you can be Brenda, you can be Brandon.' " Needless to say, students caught pretending to be TV characters should be brought directly to my office for detention. But you know, it might not be a bad thing if our students could show some of the good sense that the 90210ers display in coping with the pressures of fame and fortune. Jennie Garth, 19, who plays the very sexy, very blond, very snotty Kelly Taylor, is particularly admirable. The youngest of seven children, she grew up on a farm near Champaign, Ill., until her schoolteacher parents moved to Phoenix when she was 13. "Living in a small town and coming from a very tight and close family instilled a lot of standards that I need to live up to," says Garth, who just bought a home in Sherman Oaks. She also recently supplied her parents with the down payment for their new home, setting a splendid example for today's youth.
Tumblr media
According to a tabloid that someone left in the faculty lounge, Memphis-raised Shannen Doherty, 20, a veteran of such wonderful shows as Little House: A New Beginning, is the only cast member to be accused of behaving like "a spoiled brat" on the set. But she maintains she is no such thing. "I think everybody gets in a bad mood," Shannen says. "You do not work 16-hour days and not start feeling it. But I have never thrown a tantrum. I've gotten upset on the set, but it's never been just to be a bitch. You have to stand up for yourself in this business. That was something I was told when I was 12 years old and working with Michael Landon."
Tumblr media
As with about half the cast members, Doherty is in a relationship—in her case, a real-estate developer with whom she's exchanged commitment rings. "You really have to date a while before you decide if this is the person you want to marry," she says with Brenda-like candor. Almost sounds like the relationship could be a future 90210 plot. "The problems of young people have accelerated," says Aaron Spelling, "and so have their feelings and thoughts." The show, he says, has kept pace: Even with their Clearasil-perfect complexions and plump allowances, the students at Beverly Hills have encountered their share of problems. "We had the guts to make Luke Perry be a member of AA," says Spelling. "We had Jason, our star, drinking and driving. That's reality."
Tumblr media
And, apparently, the adulatory fan mail often includes a sad dose of that reality. "I got a letter the other day from a girl who mentioned the show we did on parental drug abuse," says Perry in a rare moment of seriousness. "She wrote about catching her father freebasing in the basement. I get letters like that all the time, from people all over the country." Gabrielle Carteris (at age 30, she's 90210's oldest cast-kid), who plays Andrea Zuckerman, the bright student who comes from the wrong side of Rodeo Drive, remembers an encouraging close encounter in a grocery store. "One girl came up to me after we'd done the breast-cancer show," says Carteris. "She said, 'I went home with all my friends and we checked our breasts for lumps.' "
Tumblr media
In conclusion: Maybe I didn't need to write this memo. Maybe things won't be that bad, even if every locker in every corridor has a picture of Jason, Luke, Shannen or Jennie in it. Perhaps our dear little school is more like West Beverly Hills High—at least the TV version—than I thought. That's what Ian Ziering, 27, thinks too. "The reality on the show pretty much mirrors the way life is all over, in terms of teenagers," says New Jersey—bred Ziering, who once did Fruit of the Loom underwear ads and now plays 90210's curly-headed jock, Steve Sanders. "There's a mystique about Beverly Hills. But that's not what keeps people tuning in. The show could have been Montana E-I-E-I-O." By the way, should any student pronounce his name "eee-an," correct him or her, please. It's "eye-an."
Tumblr media
-- WHEN BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 PREMIERED last October, Highlights, the student newspaper at Beverly Hills High, ran articles mocking the school's TV counterpart, West Beverly Hills High. "They said that the show was a joke," says Jenny Brandt, 14, a sophomore at the 1,900-student school. But as the story lines improved and Jason Priestley and Luke Perry became stars, the jokes stopped, and Brandt found herself, like many of her pals, glued to the set on Thursday nights from 9 to 10 P.M. "No phone calls allowed," says Brandt. "Except during commercials." Hope Levy, a 17-year-old senior, has taken fandom a step further with her friends. "We have little handmade cards," she says, speaking from her mom's car phone. "They say you're a member of Club 90210." While some kids think the show treats them as snobby stereotypes, most agree with sophomore Jordan Rynes when he says, "It's like a soap opera for teens. The shows dealing with drinking and drugs are the most real—adults don't realize how accurate it is."

Under Cut For Content.
Sebastian sat slumped in an expensive oak chair, his Dalton Academy blazer crumpled despite being at the dry cleaner’s over the weekend. He held an ice pack to the side of his neck and stared out the window behind his headmaster’s desk. Thomas Smythe was on speaker phone on the desk as Sabine sat perched and perfect next to him. David and his father were there, too. The topic at hand was the fight the two boys had just gotten into at the beginning of Warbler rehearsal. They should be lucky he even fucking showed up at all. He didn’t want to be there, or at school or at home. Seb wasn’t sure where he wanted to be, but he knew that he wanted to be numb and distracted.
He couldn’t focus on any of the words anybody was saying, just kept his tired eyes on the grey clouds that were clumped and heavy in the sky.  The pain in his neck throbbed in and out just like the words did, he’d heard David apologize and his father reprimand him, heard Sabine clear her throat, his headmaster admonished his attitude but he didn’t respond to anything and couldn’t quite place the exact moment they had happened. Sebastian just wanted to leave, just wanted to hide in his bed until he could sneak out and go get drunk or high somewhere.
The headmaster slammed his hand on his desk and demanded Sebastian explain himself. He let his eyes lazily drift from the window finally. He simply shrugged his shoulders and stood up, dropped the slushy ice pack on the ground with a satisfying splat and sauntered out of the room. Seb hoped that they would just expel him but of course they wouldn’t. He was sure his father was doing damage control already, sure he had promised a donation, sure he had brought up his athletic son’s many talents.
Sebastian retrieved his things out of his locker and headed to the dorm room his parents agreed to let him stay in after the break up. Thomas told him he could only stay on campus during the week and that he needed to stay out of trouble. He hadn’t kept either promise and was curious if the fight with David was the last straw, wondered if Thomas would storm up there that evening and drag him out by his ear. Seb had to laugh, his father couldn’t even be bothered to come to the goddamn Headmaster’s office.
He took the long way to the dorms so that he could smoke a few cigarettes and linger in the cold air. Sebastian’s mind wandered to the events of the afternoon. How had the fight even started? He had been flirting with the new guy. This kid had been hanging around his dorm with puppy eyes and an obvious crush so he figured why the hell not? Seb had been messing with the other boy’s collar in the hallway outside of rehearsal and the other boy had him pressed against the wall of an empty classroom doorway. This kid smiled all big and ate everything he had said up and was so obviously weak in the knees that Sebastian should have been a little ashamed at how easy this was. But his eyes were big and his smile was nice and he wasn’t quite Blaine but he’d work.
Seb could hear the Warblers begin to warm up and he was late but didn’t care. He knew that this guy wanted to kiss him but suddenly the rehearsal room door flew open and harmony flooded the hallway followed by a few gasps and laughs.
“What the hell is your problem, Sebastian?”
David stood in the doorway with his arms crossed. David, Blaine’s best friend who had probably heard all about the break up and how he hadn’t returned any texts. Sebastian didn’t want him to go report to his best friend that he had scared him or the other guy off. He wanted everyone to know that he was over it all, even if he wasn’t...they didn’t need to know what went on inside of his fucked up head.
Seb pushed himself off of the wall, the other kid stepped away with this guilty look on his face that reminded him of Blaine.
“I’m trying to get laid, David. You should try it some time.”
“It’s been a whole two weeks since Blaine. That’s great. Classic Sebastian Smythe.”
A little crowd of warblers had gathered in the door behind David, Seb refused to look at them but he heard a few snickers. His top lip twitched and he tried so hard to keep his cool demeanor but he just couldn’t. These guys had no fucking clue how he felt and he didn’t need David following him around campus like the goddamn  ghost of relationship past to make him feel guilty anytime he nodded at a cute guy.
Hunter had finally pushed his way through the crowded doorway but Sebastian was on top of David, his fists everywhere before he could say anything. He could feel Hunter’s hands on his shoulders, could hear his deep voice ‘Bas, stop! Dude, come on! Fuck, stop it!”
David got a hold of his neck and pushed him off into Hunter, who wrapped his arms around his best friend as he screamed and thrashed until Nick brought the headmaster and another teacher over.
Sebastian sat huddled in his blazer on the bleachers as he smoked. He knew what he had to do, he had to leave. Seb couldn’t stand being in Ohio, around all of these people that knew him and knew Blaine. He’d wait a few days for his father to calm down and he’d call and tell them that he would finish the year at Dalton but after that he was moving to Paris and would finish high school there. Sebastian knew his mother would be on his side which meant Thomas would give in. He just needed to get through this fucking year.
---------
Paris was a blur. Sebastian had spent more time drunk than sober and his last year of school was a huge disappointment to his parents. Well, everything he had done was a huge disappointment, he was sure. Seb knew he was too young to act so reckless but he couldn’t find it in himself to care anymore. Sabine cried on the phone to him and Hunter begged him to slow down and he woke up in strange apartments and hotels.
Hunter and his mother had rescued him so many times they had all lost count. Lost count of the cold fully clothed showers, the stomach pumps, the screaming matches, cigarette burns, and tears.
It all came to head in his darkest moment, he could see his mother through his blurry eyes as Hunter paced behind her on his cell phone. Could feel the cold porcelain of a bathtub press into the back of his neck. He remembered racing through the streets in an ambulance as his vision cut in and out. The following month was spent in rehab and he promised his parents he’d clean up his act as much as possible. Thomas had told him he needed to go to college and Sebastian's impressive extracurriculars and personal essays saved his ass. Sometimes he wondered if his father had committed a crime to get him into a good school because he knew that in the back of his head he didn’t deserve it. He didn’t deserve anything nice, not after years of acting like a petulant cry baby. Seb had his heart broken one time and couldn’t fucking let it go. He still chased the taste of whiskey colored eyes in random men and searched the city streets for a kind smile and eye crinkled laughter.
Sebastian had become a manageable mess. He did his schoolwork and earned decent grades but still partied and drank and fucked around. He’d learned how to hide his scars instead of healing them and had become an expert pretender. Sure, Hunter knew he was still drinking and getting high and chain smoking but he  couldn’t fix it. He just went along with it because he was tired, Seb knew it. There was only one person in the world who would have understood all of the pretending but he didn’t think he’d ever have a second chance.
Sebastian knew that love tasted like cherry chapstick and that regret tasted like hot cocoa and snow. Loneliness looked like honey eyes and sounded like pop songs hummed under the breath. That missing someone ached in a way that was impossible to describe and that being numb didn’t ever fully take any of it away.

Should I Walk By Again A hockey game, a slowly-failing business, talks of skin care, and a mutual crush.  Rated E  3.2k AO3
+ + +
David only comes to these stupid hockey games for Alexis. She’s been to almost every single game since she and Ted started dating, and once they got engaged she started inviting David. He’s really not into sports at all and doesn’t understand how anyone can find that much physical endurance fun. This is only his fifth week coming, wrapped in his warm sweater as he sits on the cold bleachers, hot chocolate warming his hands.
“Remind me again why I’m here?” David huffs, glaring at Alexis, who’s got Ted's other jersey on. She looks cute, he has to admit, wearing her fiancés too-big jersey in support, her blond hair curled and falling down past her shoulders.
“Uhm, because David, I told you- Ted told me he wished you’d come because then it could be a family thing,” she looks at him with her eyebrows raised. “He’s told me like twenty times the past month how hes always excited to see you here. You’re going to be brother in laws soon, he just wants to be part of the family.”
“Right,” David frowns. “But couldn't we do something else together? Like...I bet he’d like manicures! Or I could shop with him for new clothes?”
“Da-vid!”
“Fine! I’ve been here the past month haven’t I? I even watched that one guy break his arm? That was traumatizing Alexis!”
Alexis rolls her eyes. “Whatever David. Just…” her expression softens a little, going kind of shy. “I just want him to feel like there’s more than one person rooting for him in the family. I know Mom and Dad like him, but I also know Mom will never come to a game, and Dad’s so busy with the motel…” she trails off, eyes darting all over the large ice house.
“I suppose,” David sighs, looking like he’s about to regret his next words. “I suppose that there could be worse things to be doing. We’re at least in the city, and there’s food here, so…”
“Thank you David,” Alexis brightens up, watching the game. He grumbles about being hungry and gets up to go find a pretzel. He’s not been paying attention to the game, too busy texting Stevie and browsing Instagram. Looking at the scoreboard, he sees their team is up four points to Lancaster. That’s good right? Promising? Maybe? He stands in line, deciding next time he’s inviting Stevie too. After getting his pretzel and making it back to the stands, he tries to actually watch the game, begrudgingly letting Alexis take a pinch of the pretzel, too.
Because they’re in Elm Glenn (which is where Ted and Jake both play, because it’s the closest minor league hockey team), their team is in their home jerseys, dark blue. David watches most of the team start going towards the opposite goal, Lancaster in all white jerseys. Ted, number 12, is speeding down the rink along side another guy, who hits the puck into the goal, completely missing the goalie, going straight into the net on the upper right corner.
“...and newcomer Brewer makes the shot! The Guardian’s win!!” The commentator says into the mic. Everyone on their side of the rink yells and claps and hollers. David claps a little, but not too much, because that would mean possibly dropping his pretzel, and that’s absolutely not happening. Alexis is bouncing up and down on her heels, grinning widely. Ted is good for her, David thinks. He’s known this for a long time, but it’s reaffirmed now, seeing how happy she is. He tries not to think about his own love life, or lack thereof, and takes another bite.
A good twenty minutes later, Ted is walking up to them, sweaty and red faced, but happy. He’s got shoes on now, instead of his skates. “You did so good, babe! Like...so good!”
“Yeah...you did great,” David offers, wishing half heartedly that he knew more about hockey so he could at least seem like he knew what he was talking about.
Ted leans in close to Alexis for a quick kiss and then beams at David.
“Thanks bud! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Oh, hey, hold on…” Ted walks a few paces over to where a guy that looks a little out of place is standing. He has on an Elm Glenn jersey too, but David’s not sure he’s ever seen him before. True, he rarely pays attention to the players, but this man is beautiful, he knows he would have noticed him before.
“Guys, this is Patrick. He’s been on the team since Tuesday, since Mark broke his arm. He was great though wasn’t he? That last shot was golden!”
Alexis shakes his hand and compliments him, but David’s barely aware of it all, as he stares at the guy- Patrick. As he stares at Patrick. He’s smaller than Ted, but still muscular, his brown hair wavy, like maybe if he grew it out, he’d have curls. His eyes are a warm brown, and when David meets them he has to look away, the intensity too much.
“Hi, I’m David...Alexis’s brother,” David is suddenly very aware of the older Givenchy sweater he’s wearing, sure he probably looks more dingy than he’d like. “You uhm...you played great!” Played great? Come on Rose. Jesus.
“David...nice to meet you,” Patrick’s smile is more of a smirk, kind of cocky. “Thank you. I was nervous to start on the team, but everyone’s been great. I live in Schitt’s Creek too, just moved here. Ted and Jake have been great.”
“Oh! You should totally come have dinner with us then,” Alexis pipes up, looking at David with a knowing smile. “We’d love to get to talk more, wouldn't we David?”
David shoots her a withering glare. “Yeah. You should come.”
“Oh, I don’t want to intr-“
“It’s a tradition! Seriously, it’ll be fun. I insist,” Ted speaks up, his golden retriever attitude coming out. David snorts as Patrick looks a little overwhelmed.
“Sure, I’ll come.”
“Great!! We’ll meet you at the cafe?” Alexis wraps an arm around Ted. After a nod from Patrick, both men go back to the locker room to change.
“What the fuck, Alexis?”
Alexis has the audacity to just shrug. David is going to kill her, and her weird ability to seem to be able to read his mind.
“Look, Ted told me he’s single, just broke up with his like...high school on again off again girlfriend or something. And he’s super nice, and kind of hot, in a weird, cute way. All I’m saying, is it might be good for you to put yourself out there.”
David rolls his eyes, fighting the urge to shake her. “One problem- you said girlfriend. Clearly he’s not into guys.”
“Wow, okay, you of all people should know not to judge. From what Ted’s told me, he’s bi. They were talking about celebrity crushes or something while practicing and Patrick said he’d die to kiss Sebastian Stan, sooo….”
At least his taste in celebrities isn’t awful, David thinks. “He’s not going to be into me. I’m like, the furthest thing away from Sebastian Stan. But whatever. We’re getting dinner with him. Let’s go.”
The forty five minute drive is filled with 90’s pop music and Alexis talking about Jared Leto’s apparent new yacht. They get to the cafe and sit in their usual booth, but when Twyla sits the usual three menus down, Alexis grins. “Actually, Twy, we need another tonight. One of Ted’s teammates is coming too.”
“Oh! Okay! That’s really nice of you guys, I know when Jake tried to-“
“Jake’s different from this guy, we have a...history,” David grimaces, trying to push the weird thruple memory out of his head. A few moments after Twyla’s put the other menu down and headed back to the kitchen, Ted walks in, followed shortly after by Patrick, and oh...okay. Wow. Patrick looks amazing in his deep blue sweater and khakis. Usually not the type of thing David’s into (he tried dating that one jcrew model back in his early twenties but…), but it suits Patrick, and he looks especially...cozy.
Alexis kisses Ted’s cheek when he sits, and David scoots down on his side to let Patrick have room. He smells like cedar, citrus and...oak moss, maybe? David’s mind flashes to one of the Burberry colognes he’d sampled a while back while at the mall with Stevie.
“When did you move here?” Alexis asks Patrick, as they all browse over the menu. He looks up and smiles.
“Two weeks ago.”
“Oh wow, so you’re like...really new,” she laughs a little.
“Yeah, uhm,” Patrick clears his throat. “I uh...needed a change. So I came here. I work for Ray Butani?”
Both Alexis and David groan, making Patrick and Ted laugh.
“He’s not that bad,” Patrick tries to defend his boss. “I mean...he’s a talker, that’s for sure, but...what do you guys do?”
Alexis starts rambling about Interflix and her PR stuff, and David tunes her out, thinking about what she’d said earlier about Patrick being single. He’s pulled out of his thoughts when a hand touches his shoulder. Patrick’s looking at him, a mix of amusement and worry on his face
“What?”
“I asked what you did,” he laughs a little, lips quirking up. David blushes and sees Alexis talking to Ted.
“Oh...oh, uhm. I own Rose Apothecary, across the street.”
Patrick’s eyebrows raise. “Wow, that’s...amazing. I haven’t been in yet, but I’ve walked by, it seems really nice. I’ll have to stop in,” he assures, and David feels his heart stutter.
“Oh..you don’t...you don’t have to. It’s a lot of face care and candles and…” he trails off, thinking Patrick wouldn’t be interested in anything his store has to offer.
“And what makes you think I’m not into that kind of stuff? I mean...I know my skin could use some work but...maybe you could recommend some stuff…” Patrick looks hesitant.
“Your skin is good, especially if you don’t do anything to it,” David frowns. “But...yes, I’d be happy to help. Your t-zone could use work.” He watches pink blossom on Patrick’s neck and cheeks. Cute.
“You should stop in before it’s closed,” Alexis pipes in, and David kicks her under the table, glaring. “What? I’m being realistic David. I don’t want it to close either, but..”
Patrick is looking at him, frowning. “Why would it be closing?”
“Uhm….well...I don’t,” David groans, wishing he could smack Alexis. Of course he now has to explain to this cute stranger why his business is failing. “I’m not great with numbers? And my dad...he’s trying to help. He co-owns the motel with my best friend Stevie. But…” he trails off, feeling his whole face heat up.
“Oh,” Patrick suddenly looks much more worried. “I went to school for business...I’m really good at forecasting numbers, I can take a look if you want?”
David isn’t sure whether to be amazed or insulted or embarrassed. He’s maybe all three. “As nice as that is, I think I can handle it on my own, but thank you,” he clears his throat, then gives Patrick a small smile, hoping he’s not offended him.
“Of course David, sorry for overstepping.”
At that moment, they’re interrupted by Twyla, who takes their orders. David expects Patrick to order a beer, but is surprised to hear him order mint tea. It’s a pleasant change from every other guy he’s met here. The dinner is easy with Patrick there, the dynamic hasn’t changed. If anything, now David has someone to talk to while Alexis and Ted have little private moments. It’s nice. By the time they’re all outside in the cool autumn air, David’s surprised to find he doesn’t really want the night to end, happy that the slight awkwardness about his business hasn’t actually deterred the nice company.
“It was great meeting you,” Patrick looks at the Rose’s, then turns to look at just David. “I might stop in soon, see about some new face care,” he winks, and David tries to stop from smiling. After saying by to Ted, Patrick gets in his silver Kia and drives off. Tonight has been a surprisingly good one, and with that, David goes to text Stevie.
++++
“So, Alexis just told this guy all about your business having issues?” Stevie’s eyebrows are knitted together, eyes a little wide. “I mean...I knew she was stupid, but-“
“She just fucking trashed my whole store. In front of him!”
“And what did he say?” Stevie leans over the front desk, watching As David paces around the small check in. He feels antsy, like if he doesn’t keep moving he’s going to fall into the pit of despair he always falls into when something isn’t going the way he’s planned.
“He offered to help? Which, who does that?! Who offers to help a complete and total stranger with their financial issues? It was mortifying,” he huffs, shaking his head. “He works for Ray, apparently. Just moved here two weeks ago,” David adds, chewing on his lip.
“Well...I don’t know David. I know it’s a little sketchy, but. If your dads not even having luck, maybe it couldn’t hurt? You said he went to school for business?”
David widens his eyes, mouth open. “Are you siding with him?!” His hands fly upwards.
“No! No...I just,” Stevie looks away. “You’ve worked so hard, and the store is amazing. I don’t want to see you fail.”
Feeling a lump in his throat, David blinks rapidly, then rubs his eyes. “...I guess it couldn’t hurt...to at least see what he has to say,” he decides. “Thank you...for believing in me.”
“Of course, I’m your best friend. What else am I going to do? You need to talk to him,” Stevie gives him another small smile. “Okay, too much emotion. Go work.”
“Thanks Stevie,” David calls as he leaves and heads over to the Apothecary for another day of what he’s sure will be slow business. He has to tamper down the smallest bit of hope that maybe, Patrick Brewer can help him.
++++
As expected, business is slow, but not slower than normal. There’s been the few stragglers, but also a handful of people buying body milk or new candles. The bell chimes while David is eating a sandwich, and it takes a moment for him to swallow and go out. If it’s Jocelyn, he swears he’s going to tell her they’re closed. Stepping out from behind the curtain, he freezes. Patrick is standing at the middle table, a bottle of the body milk in his hand, reading the label.
“What can I help you with?” David walks over, smiling. Patrick’s eyes find his own, the man's face lighting up. He’s wearing Levi jeans and a light blue sweater today, and while usually that kind of mid range denim and sweater would make him cringe, seeing it on Patrick isn’t bad- it suits him.
“David! It’s so different from what I pictured, but better,” Patrick assures. “It’s calming...an oasis in the desert of Schitt’s Creek.”
“How philosophical of you,” David shakes his head a little. “But thank you, it...it’s something that helps living here, I guess,” he shrugs. Patrick nods, then looks around.
“So...are you still willing to show me the skin care products you were raving about?”
David nods and flits around, in his element now. He’s happy Patrick’s going to see him here, instead of a hockey game. He picks up a couple different glass jars and a tube. He can tell, as he shows everything to Patrick, that he’s out of his element, so David takes a breath and starts again.
“This,” he holds up the first bottle. “This is for washing your face. It’s like the baseline of good skin care. Literally just use it twice a day, it’s easy, I promise. You can’t go wrong.” Patrick nods, which makes David laugh. “I know it’s overwhelming, but it gets easier.”
“Next is your toner. All you have to do is put some on a cotton ball and swipe it all over your face. There’s a spray too, but the cotton ball lets you make sure you get it evenly everywhere. It takes off any left over face wash, balances oils, and evens skin tone. Lastly,” David holds up the little tube. “This is moisturizer. This one specifically is good for combination skin types. You probably get oily on your t-zone but dry out everywhere else. It’s also got spf 50 sunscreen in it, which will help protect your pale skin.”
Patrick seems to actually be understanding this time, smiling along. “So face wash, toner, moisturizer. Got it. That’s pretty easy,” he says, and David nods.
“Just remember not to wipe your face like...ever. Pat it dry. That’ll help not clog your pores. And cold water to rinse the face wash off.” David puts the three items up on the counter, watching as Patrick continues to look around. He stops at the scarves hanging on the back wall, touching the black one.
“This is soft.”
“100 percent cat hair,” David admits, making Patrick instantly drop it. “Allergic?”
“Yeah, don’t really feel like going into a Benadryl induced coma right now,” Patrick laughs, scrunching his nose up. It should be illegal to be as cute as he is.
“So, uhm,” David wrings his hands together as Patrick turns to look at him. His eyes are trained on David, making him feel exposed. “After talking with Stevie...I think...does your offer still stand on looking at some of the store’s numbers?” He’s nervous and embarrassed, staring at the floor, and then Patrick’s closer.
“Of course, David. I’d be happy to. Just let me know a good time that works for you, and I’ll come over. It can be whenever, during store hours or not, I’d just be in the back anyway.”
David lets out a sigh of relief. “I uhm...We could do Thursday, if you’re free?” He needs some time to tell his dad that he’s found someone to help, so he’s not blindsided and offended.
“Sounds perfect to me,” Patrick looks at the tea at the front of the middle table and grabs a bag of the mint, setting it on the counter too.
“Good choice. It’s popular,” David nods at the paper bag with the loose leaves in it.
“Have you not had it?”
“I am...not a fan of tea, I’d rather have coffee, like, injected into my blood,” David talks as he rings the items up. He glares a little at the laugh that comes from the other man's mouth. “Coffee is an essential way of getting my energy, I’ll have you know.”
“Of course, David,” Patrick smirks, and okay, it should be illegal to be that cute, especially when he’s in a boring button down and Levi’s. “Thank you for the lesson on skin care, and I guess I’ll see you Thursday?” He looks like he wants to say something else but stops himself at the last second. Watching him walk out the door, and down the sidewalk, his breath catches when Patrick stops mid step, turn around, then pause. As if he’s talking to himself, Patrick bites his lip and then turns back around, decidedly walking away this time. David can’t help but let his mind wander to all the possibilities of what Patrick might have said, or why he would have come back, for the rest of the day.
