Part 2 of Eddie Making Jewelry For Steve; Part 1 here / Part 3 here / Part 4 here
Steve had figured it out after the second little box that was left on the Family Video counter.
He didn’t see Eddie leave it, he was too involved in his conversation with Robin that happened to be about his panic surrounding Eddie.
See the thing is, he knew there were bisexual people and he knew he liked men for years.
But saying it outloud and falling for his best friend? Well, that was a whole other thing.
The way Steve figured it out was the handwriting on the little notes. It felt a little crazy comparing his Family Video card paperwork to the notes, but Robin was the one who suggested it.
Eddie looped his lowercase Es tightly, to the point they almost looked like Cs. And his Is were always lowercase with a circle instead of a dot.
It really just had to be him leaving the beautiful pieces that made Steve’s heart melt and his stomach fall out his ass. Although, he still had his doubts. There was no way his dream guy was just being that fucking perfect, that wasn’t usually how Steve’s life went.
But oh god did he sure have hope.
Steve thought he was being obvious that he knew, wearing the ring that he had fallen in love with in front of Eddie. He even fidgeted with it and caught Eddie staring at it before the other man quickly looked away.
He couldn’t help but tear up in the Beamer after the outing, asking Robin for advice only resulted in drunken living room karaoke, not a plan.
Steve tried to ask where he got his pieces once so maybe him and Robin could run surveillance like old times, but Eddie ended up being vague and elusive.
When Steve brought Nancy into the secret op, she suggested a stake out which felt like stalking. She started a board with dates and drop off locations and roughly estimated it was every 2-4 weeks on dates Steve was usually busy.
It was coming up on almost a month since the last drop and Steve was practically showing off with the last chain, making sure his polo was just open at top enough for Eddie to see.
The flushing across Eddie’s cheeks into his chest was everything, but still his metalhead said nothing.
It was time for Nancy’s plan.
Steve dropped days he’d be busy, watching as Eddie seemingly made a mental note of them. His feigned disappointment was shaky, Steve hoping he’d just blurt it out without confrontation.
But alas, nothing.
Nancy put on her ‘undercover journalism best’ aka a literally just a black sweater and black pants, borrowing her parents car instead of using her own. And I’m that moment Steve felt—
“Am I crazy? Is this whole thing crazy?” Steve paces the Family Video aisles between romance and comedy, which felt pretty fitting considering his love life was a joke.
Robin places a hand on his shoulder and gives him that all encompassing look between the fact that she thinks it’s completely sane, but also really fucking crazy.
“You want to know for sure, right? Not just the handwriting or little weird glances?”
Steve sighs and then nods slowly, he really did want to know for sure. But the problem is what came after.
“Okay then, we’ll just see what Nancy says then hmm? For all we know it could be a boring—“
As if on cue, the walkie they stole from the kids crackles.
“Steve—it’s for sure him, he just—“
“HE JUST WHAT?! WE NEED ANSWERS WHEELER,” Robin shouts into the speaker before Nancy can even finish, Steve grabs the walk-in out of her hand with a scoff.
“Say sorry to your eardrums for her Nance— so wait, what happened?” Steve tries to shove down his nerves, but his fingers on the device tremble.
“He leave something in your mailbox, do you want me to—“
“Steve, GO!”
He really needs to teach her what an inside voice is.
“Are you—“
“I’ll cover you, if Keith comes back I’ll—I’ll make up a dead aunt or say you ripped your pants, I don’t know! I’m not good under pressure, you know how I get Steve. Goddamnit, just go before I start rambling!”
Steve nods and handing her the walkie, running out the door. He knows he breaks the speed limit on the way home, knows if he gets pulled over he can just use the Hopper card. He normally wouldn’t, but extreme times and all that.
Nancy is pulled into the drive when he gets there, popping out when she sees him pull up next to the mailbox.
“Hey I wanted to stay, for you know, support,” she says with a small smile, seeming to enjoy this all way too much.
“Nance, you didn’t have to—“
“Yes I did, Steve. Now fucking open it before me and Robs burst a blood vessel.”
Steve nervously chuckles, his fingers twitching on the mailbox door before pulling it down to a little red box.
‘Stevie, something different,’ is all it reads.
He shares a glance with Nancy, before pulling it out.

ages 2-6 (flexible, not mandatory): kindergarten
ages 6-10 (grades 1-4): elementary school
ages 10/11-16/17 (grades 5-10): "secondary school", the diploma qualifies you for an education outside of university (craft sector, social sector etc)
ages 16/17-18/19 (grades 11-12): "upper school", the diploma qualifies you for university
¸¸♬·¯·♩¸¸♪·¯·♫¸¸¸¸♫·¯·♪¸¸♩·¯·♬¸¸
Himejima Gyomei (27, theology major)
grew up in a buddhist orphanage after his parents gave him up because they were ableist idiots who didn't want to raise a blind child
had a very happy childhood, has never been adopted and isn't upset about it in the slightest
went on a spiritual journey for five years after school and wrote a bestseller book about it
started going to university at age 23, helps out at the orphanage whenever he can
has a seeing-eye dog named Curry (a four year old black labrador and the only being on earth he would kill for, he got her when he returned from his journey)
can afford his own flat and lives right next to the orphanage with Curry
advocate for a more inclusive university life and very active in groups fighting for disability rights, both on and off campus
Uzui Tengen (23, music major)
was somewhat of a public figure from a very young age because the Uzui clan is one the richest, most powerful families in the country and everyone in town knows who they are
always hated his parents and moved out at 18, got a small fortune (that's rich people slang for a ton of money, source: trust me) from a cool uncle and used it to open a night club which is very popular with the locals
has no contact to his siblings (even tho he'd like to) and avoids all of his dad's properties like the plague
started going to university at age 20 because he wanted to do something with his passion
plays a bunch of instruments (piano, harp, guitar, violin, shamizen, koto and like ten different types of flute)
lives with his girlfriends in an almost-a-mansion and throws the best partys anyone has ever been to
Tomioka Giyuu (21, philosophy major)
his parents died when he was three years old and him and his sister went through foster care until she came off age and became his legal guardian, they're super close
has been studying several martial arts at Urokodaki's dojo since he was in elementary school
picked philosophy as a major because he had no idea what else to do but it's actually fun??
he mostly just sits in the back and draws stick figures but once a week he'll say something that makes everyone rethink their entire life (no one really understands what's happening inside his head but his professors are convinced he's a genius)
teaches little kids in the dojo because Urokodaki thinks it'd be good for him, he's slowly warming up to it
the type of peanut allergy where his throat closes up at the sight of them, when they were in fifth grade Sanemi almost killed him because he didn't know about it and it delayed their friendship by roughly two years
Shinazugawa Sanemi (21, physics major)
abusive pos dad got stabbed when he was ten, helped his mom raise his younger siblings and is super close with all of them
moved out at 20 when his mom encouraged him to spend more time at university, roommates with Obanai, Giyuu and Sabito
colorblind from birth and dysgraphic when it comes to handwriting, uses recording devices and laptops in class
used to get into a lot of fights in school and still works on not doing that™, most people think he's scary and a delinquent (and also a murderer because it's kinda sus that none of the family members showed up at their dad's funeral)
biker, the motorcycle has wind art on it and he mostly uses it to pick up the tons of children that somehow snuck into his friend circle and take Kanae on drives, loves bringing his guitar to play her something in the moonlight
suffered through school for the most part, a new teacher (Kagaya) in tenth grade inspired him to finish "upper school" and study physics
loves Gyomei's dog like a daughter
Kocho Kanae (21, biology major)
lives with her family and has no plans of moving out until she finishes university, helps a ton in the household
the best big sister ever, drives all of her sisters and their friends around and picks them up at 3am when they're stranded somewhere (also doesn't pretend to hate it, unlike certain other older siblings with their own vehicles)
has always been into gardening and is really getting into permaculture, puts plants wherever she can and loves flowers
most of her cooking ingredients are from her own garden, vegetarian (everything she cooks or bakes will be the best thing you ever ate)
has the voice of an angel, Sumi, Kiyo and Naho refuse to go to bed without her singing them a lullaby
christmas is her favorite time of the year, she goes all out with planning the festivities and getting everyone gifts and needs three whole days to recharge afterwards
has to wear a biteguard when she's stressed because she'll start clenching her teeth in her sleep and works really hard to keep it a secret from everyone
Iguro Obanai (21, philosophy major)
somewhat of a local legend, not by his own doing but by people just making shit up about him
grew up in a cult of which all the members were killed in a fire with him being the only survivor and a huge news story all across the country at age 12
moved to another city as soon as he was old enough to start anew but the rumors follow him everywhere (and it doesn't help that he talks to his snake)
mostly annoyed by the rumors but also likes to use them to scare people of who are being super pushy or harassing his friends (that's the first time in his life he found friends, he can and will commit atrocious crimes on their behalf)
originally enrolled in zoology, then switched majors when the professors wanted to use Kaburamaru as a test subject
spends his time in philosophy class taking a stance against whatever Giyuu says and has an entire folder filled with essays criticizing his statements
always carries headphones with him, listens to lofi because he likes it, mcr because he feels it in his soul and doom metal solely to fuck with tengen ("Screaming is not music!")
Rengoku Kyojuro (20, history major)
still lives at home with his dad and brother because he didn't want to leave Senjuro behind, spends most of his time out of the house tho and is looking for a flat right now
works parttime at a restaurant that's called Umainia and his friends have yet to figure out whether he says "Umai" all the time because he likes his food or to advertise his work place
slightly hearing impaired, has hearing aids prescribed that he just forgets to put in at all times
doesn't have a driver's license, goes by bike everywhere no matter the weather
gets close to people easily, is well beloved amongst Senjuro's friends and also makes an effort to get to know them so he can be sure Senjuro's in good hands
regularly forgets people's names but never their birthdays
collects old books and learned a bunch of old languages just to be able to read them
Kanroji Mitsuri (19, art major)
still lives at home because she wants to stay with her family and help take care of her siblings, also claims that she had invested too much time in her room to just leave it behind (her room looks like every cool fluffy fairy core room you have ever seen on pinterest, it's the coziest place on earth)
if there's a sanrio themed version of stuff she needs, she's getting it, no questions asked.
slightly allergic to dogs, she doesn't care though and cuddles with Curry all the time, she calls it confrontation therapy (it works)
animal lover in general, she even built a little terrarium in her room so Kaburamaru has a comfy spot for his naps when Obanai stays over
has kept every drawing she ever made and sometimes looks through them for inspiration, also likes to track her progress that way
there's a coffee shop across the street from her house where she has been customer of the month every month consistently for four years as well as an honorary mention ever since she was six
Kocho Shinobu (18, student)
in her last year of school and likely about to graduate with a perfect score
founder and president of the first aid club, also head of the student council and an active member on every committee the school has to offer
recently got her driver's license but keeps it a secret so she doesn't have to play chauffeur for her sisters
effectively avoids getting asked out for dates by being very scary™ (and taking jiu jitsu classes since elementary school), she's also your go to person when creepy weirdos won't leave you alone
loves cooking with her sisters and often shares her own recipes with Kanao, she also has her own little corner in Kanae's garden where she plants stuff that she uses to make her own medicine
has a lot on her plate with school and her clubs and some volunteer stuff she does here and there, so she goes to the local animal shelter once a week to cuddle and play with the cats and dogs there, it's her little safe zone to unwind and she doesn't tell anyone about it
the biggest fan of psychological thrillers you will ever meet
Tokito Muichiro (14, student)
in eighth grade and no one knows how he did it but everyone suspects that his brother took at least some of his exams in his place
he's not bad at school per se but he just can't memorize stuff, you're lucky if he knows your name after sitting next to each other for six months
is a member of the cooking club tho and absolutely thriving there, he never goes by recipe and creates the most delicious things but he won't tell anyone his secret ingredients because he can't remember them either
absolutely loves visiting his friends' houses, he's so happy seeing how their rooms reflect them
followed Yuichiro everywhere all throughout elementary school, then made his first friend in fifth grade (Tanjiro of course) and has been getting more and more independent ever since
constantly misses bus stops or takes trains in the wrong direction and is always late because of it, however he has also acquired an extensive knowledge of the town and can give you directions to pretty much everywhere
tries his very best to remember his friends' birthdays but forgets his own every year because it just kinda slips his mind that he has the same birthday as Yuichiro

Chapter 3 - To Be Phocid [Qedivar's research]
It's that time again. Ishmael is a teenage boy, fair warning.
I'm posting this on mobile so I cba linking the previous chapters but go into the siren tag to find them.
x
Following these events, and at Maris’s insistence, Ishmael began to keep a journal. To the delight of this author, his writing was deep, introspective, and highly detailed. From now on, I no longer had to rely on pieced together scraps and reports, but from a primary source. As such, the way these events are related will shift a little, but that is only for events concerning Ishmael.
Cherta, unfortunately, did not keep a journal at this time and remains frustratingly opaque, given Ishmael’s somewhat biased recounting of their activities. Although one must concede to the difficulties of keeping a journal underwater, before the age of sub-aquatic writing systems, and with eighteen other overambitious adolescents in relatively close proximity.
Ishmael’s journal was recorded on a computerified device and was not written by hand, though his deep dream education had serviced to educate him in handwriting skills. This was tested when he was younger, as part of an evaluation to determine the extent of his dexterity. Although the notion of a form of writing which is stored in a purely hypothetical space is very odd, especially in its permanency, it has enabled us to access his thoughts at this day and age, whereas traditional aquatic knot-writing would have long since rotted away.
He wrote in the language of the Predecessors, which I believe to be the root of all air-speaking language families. The translation of these texts is what has taxed me more than any other part of this process, aside from the grievous bodily harm, and it has taken a fantastic span of time to achieve this translation. I cannot credit my sources for fear of implicating them but you can be assured that the finest minds of the Spire collaborated on this project. This Predecessor tongue is what is spoken in all of the videos, enabling me to learn it to a conversational level, though I am hardly fluent.
Some of the journal is rendered untranslatable due to it referring to objects or concepts which were considered common knowledge at the time, requiring no additional definition. These concepts or objects will be clearly marked. However, I believe much of the text to be familiar to many people, telling of the frustration and longing common and recognisable today. That said, I believe it is also important not to take for granted the relatability.
Ishmael is not always familiar to us and existed in a time we would find nigh incomprehensible. Do not take this as reason to doubt his interiority or personhood, and do not fall into the trap of believing that you would have done better in his place, that you would have seen clearly what he obviously did not (and had good reason not to). They may have been phocids, or the predecessors of phocids, but they were new. If you were the first of your kind, could you do better?
I will now present the text in chronological order, starting from the eve of his sixteenth birthday:
-
Entry 1 – I hate seeing that baby siphonid. It’s still moving. It drags itself around on the leg the researchers didn’t take. Now I’m just going to remember this forever, since I wrote it down. Great. I hate that fucking noise. Why can’t they just get it to shut up?
Thank [deity]. They took it away.
Update – it didn’t even taste good.
-
Entry 2 - Maris told me to talk more about my feelings. What does she know? Nobody understands me anyway. I don’t think they can feel all that on their face like me. The sipho noise kept touching me. The researchers are always talking about hydrofoils and antennae but I bet they don’t know what I do - how the siphos talk to each other. I told Callum and he didn’t know what I meant, even though he has a beard.
Talked to Lee again about sex since Dan said he wouldn’t tell me himself. I don’t think Lee told the truth about a lot of that stuff. The other kids sometimes joke around a bit too much, but it is kinda funny I guess.
Update - Dan shouted at me for asking, but now I have proof Lee was wrong.
-
Entry 3 – The phocids click at each other underwater with their tongues.
Dan got so angry after I pulled my face hair out. He made the interns [untranslatable] search my room for the hairs and they actually found them. They didn’t even do anything with it, just put it in a bag and sealed it away. Looks like nobody wants it at all. Dan says Atom spent 120 billion nua making me, so I think one face hair is worth a few million. If I started selling them to the people outside the lab, I could buy my own stake of land on Siren just like them. I wouldn’t let Lee in. My fingers are probably worth a couple billion each.
Should I
-
Entry 4 – Emer (the intern) looked at me like I did something wrong when she changed my pillowcases.
Spilled bile EVERYWHERE when they were testing me. I keep thinking about somehow saving it and trying to sell it. I’m supposed to be a digestive model for Siren food, so my insides are probably worth a lot. I should ask Dan when he calms down.
Callum came around to talk to Dan again. He’s getting really tall, he’s taller than me now even when I stand up straight. He’s so skinny, like the baby siphonids (I can snap one in half with just my teeth now). When Callum was there, he didn’t want to look at me, but I get it. They didn’t even cook the siphonid this time, it was raw and with the shell on. His leg is the same width as one of them.
Emer won’t stop changing my pillowcases. Is there a way to prevent them from smelling like that?? Callum hasn’t been around so I can’t ask. Maris thinks it’s just because people my age start getting sweaty but Dan specifically told me he made me not have sweat glands anywhere but my hands. Then he said the phocids do have sweat glands. I still don’t get the point of sweating if you’re already a stupid wet rat who lives in the
-
Entry 5 – I’m seventeen now. Since I’m an adult, I decided to stop being reticent around the phocids. I want to know if they found a comfortable way to walk without the skin coming off their tails. So I went to talk to them today for the first time. There is a window where you can do it, they let it open ever since the climate control got busted again last month.
Cherta is really weird. I knew they couldn’t stay in the pool for very long because they might have a seizure but apparently it can happen any time, not just underwater. They have a button implant that makes their muscles relax. Anyway, their tails have thicker skin than mine so that was useless. But it is still worthwhile, I think, to meet with the phocids. They remind me why I am a human, and they are not. I kind of pity them because all they're ever going to be is a bunch of test subjects in a tiny swimming pool.
Cherta told me that one of the phocids died a year ago. I don’t remember Dan ever talking about it to me, but they said it was a big deal. Apparently they got pressure sickness when climate control broke the first time. I think Cherta broke it the second time, they sounded too proud to mention it. I don’t get it. Anyway, breaking stuff in the lab is against the rules and I think I’m going to tell Dan about that.
-
Entry 6 – I made the right choice. Cherta got so angry when they found out I told on them that they had another seizure. The other phocids had to pull them out of the pool. Dan thought I did the right thing but I don’t think he liked me going to tell Cherta about it afterwards, told me no one likes a snitch. Well, then, what am I supposed to do? Just let it happen? I hope Cherta chokes on that gross pool water next time.
Dan suggested I go do something other than visit the phocids and I agree, they’re clearly not worth my time. I went to see Callum instead but he wasn’t in. He has a games console, I saw him show it off to Lee the other day. I wonder if he’d let me try it.
[End of Journal Entries]
-
It paints an interesting picture. As Ishmael mentions, Cherta suffered permanent neurological issues as a result of their birth mishaps. This was a point of contention within the lab, beyond Ishmael’s knowledge; the finance manager of the settlement questioned the wisdom of keeping a test subject in an aquatic locomotion study group who could not spend much time underwater. Every time, however, Dan Loris would respond that Cherta now provided essential information about phocid neurology and drowning mechanisms.
The phocid whose death Ishmael mentions was number seventeen, Ambla. It is highly likely that number seventeen’s death was accidental, but the circumstances were not caused by a failure of the lab’s climate system.
I have found the experimental notes from that day; Ambla was brought to an isolated chamber which was controlled by the climate system, with its own test pool, and the quality of the atmosphere was changed to match that of the Precursor home planet. The force of gravity was thus increased. What the Humans did not expect was Ambla’s sudden inability to swim to the surface. They inhaled water, which settled in their lungs and caused them to drown even after they had been pulled out of the pool.
Dan expressed grief in his notes, and surprise. He did not understand why such a thing would occur and blamed the climate system for somehow altering the test beyond his parameters. This is likely what led to Cherta’s misconception that the climate system had killed one of their friends, and their subsequent sabotage of the climate system every few months after that.
But any phocid or selkie reading this will intimately recognise the problem, and I believe the mystery of Ambla’s death may now be solved. The water taken to fill the pool was likely Tel!am’s Blood, a phenomenon all sea-faring people will know about. The Precursors, it seemed, were unfamiliar with it, and had pumped water in to the pool which nobody could swim in. But with the increased gravity, even the fittest phocid would struggle to rise in shallow water.
Regardless, there exists a substantial gap between that last journal entry and the next. Almost a year, in fact, when Ishmael did not write at all, and neither did he participate in Maris’s therapy sessions. I do, however, have a copy of Callum’s journal with me which provides at least half of the narrative, incomplete as it is.

Isolation
Ok, the first chapter of my Alexia Ashford fic. Again, I would appreciate short reviews on whether it is worth continuing or not. I'm not mad if you say it sucks. I just want an honest opinion.
______________________________________________
Chapter 1
December 12
What do you actually write in a diary? I guess I just write whatever comes into my mind.
My name is Samantha Blair, and I’ve been stationed at the Aurora Research Facility for about a month now. This place will be my home for roughly the next 11 months. I graduated two years ago with a PhD in chemistry. This is my new job. It wasn’t easy to get it. After all, there are only a few positions available in this facility. There are 12 of us in total, and my job is to analyze ice and soil samples. It’s summer here at the moment. The sun doesn’t set this close to the South Pole any more, and at night it only gets a bit dusky, which, admittedly, bothers me more than I thought it would. Doug* gave me this journal “so I won’t lose track of time.” I wonder if that will help. At least I can try.
*Douglas Garry, station leader
December 13
Nothing interesting. After breakfast, I set about sorting the samples from the last research team and finding out which of them still needed to be analyzed and which didn’t. So the same thing I’ve been doing for over a week now. What were they thinking? “We’ll be gone soon anyway, let the next team take care of it?” After me, the deluge. Typical. Half of the samples are not properly labeled, and even for those that are, it takes forever to find out what has already been done with them. It’s all in the lab books, my ass. I can hardly do anything with the cryptic notes there if I manage to decipher the handwriting at all. On top of that, I have to pick the measurement data out of disorganized piles of paper. It was all planned differently. They were actually supposed to measure their own stuff, but towards the end of their stay, one device after another broke down. The devices are working again. Now, we’re supposed to carry out these measurements first and send them the results.
December 14
Sorting samples, searching for corresponding measurement data. Nothing new. Jeff gave me a new drill core. At least I was able to take a few measurements today.
*Jeffrey Norris, geologist
December 15
As I was going about my usual business, John* arrived and said that we were going to be hit by a heavy snowstorm in the next few days. According to the weather data, the storm will last for several days, maybe even weeks. We have to prepare the station. So we spent the whole day outside moving equipment into storage rooms or fixating it. I’m still freezing.
*John Bennings, meteorologist
December 16
Dark clouds have gathered. After so many days of sunshine, the darkness, if you can call it that, is a welcome change.
December 17
It’s been snowing since last night, and the snowfall is getting heavier, although it will be another 2-3 days before it really starts. David* expressed concerns about the dogs, but Marcus** said they don’t mind the little bit of snow. Quite the opposite. Huskies love this weather. Marcus looks after the dogs. He will know best. When I think about it, it occurs to me that we are probably one of the only stations left that still uses dog sleds. We also have snowmobiles, but Marcus always says the dogs are more reliable.
Later, we decided who should clear the paths and when. The work should continue if possible. However, if the storm gets too bad, the research buildings will remain closed until it subsides.
*David Palmer, technical chief
**Marcus Clark, responsible for the dogs, thermal engineering, welding work
December 18
The howling of the wind gets stronger and stronger. Eerie. I have hardly slept a wink. At least I’m slowly making progress with the samples.
December 19
I spent half the day clearing paths. It is a Sisyphean task. As soon as I was finished, I had to start all over because everything was covered in snow again. And the worst is yet to come. If it goes on like this, I can forget about work for a while.
December 20
Jeff was on clearing duty today. He also said there was no point. After dinner, we agreed that we would only clear the paths to the important buildings, everything else would have to wait until the storm subsided. At least the dogs are having fun. And Lena. She built a giant snowman. Lena Fuchs is still a student and the youngest of our team, and you can tell. When I see her so carefree, I sometimes think I’m getting old...
The fact that Lena is here is not a matter of course. Normally, students are not accepted for research stays. However, Lena has excellent grades, so she was selected regardless of the usual rules. At least, that’s the official reason. For those who believe it. Her father just happens to have a lot of political influence and a ton of money. It would be a true miracle if he hadn’t set the whole thing up.
She’s supposed to help me with the measurements, but that will have to wait until the samples are sorted and the storm calmed down. In the first few weeks, however, I had already shown her how to operate the measurement devices. To pass the time, I’ve now given her a pile of papers to read.
December 21
We have a visitor. The last thing you expect at the South Pole in the middle of a snowstorm is a visitor. Her name is Veronica Edwards. She is British and works at the Umbrella facility nearby. She says she is a senior researcher. There’s been a virus outbreak. She hasn’t said what kind of virus it is, only that it’s not airborne and that the likelihood of her being infected is low. In general, she kept a rather low profile. However, she said that under the circumstances she cannot stay in the Umbrella facility. If she is infected with something, we can’t let her roam around freely, but not helping her is not an option either, so we put her in quarantine. Actually, that was her suggestion. Isaac* has prepared a room in the northeast storage building for the purpose. She waited in the snowmobile she came in. The building is quite large, and it also has a shower room and restrooms. Additionally, the supply in the northeastern storage building is largely separated from the other buildings, and we can lock an area from the outside. That could work. It was supposed to be modified into another research building this summer, but the modification has been postponed for another year or so. However, it has already been largely emptied. She said two weeks of quarantine would be enough. For the time being, only Isaac and Harry** will look after her. Isaac is our doctor. Harry has volunteered. They will stay away from the rest of us to minimize the risk of a virus outbreak during that time. In case of an emergency, they have walkie-talkies.
We have offered to contact Umbrella and tell them what happened, but Dr. Edwards said she had done that before she left the Umbrella facility. They’ll send people as soon as the storm subsides. If they’re taking so long, that must mean it’s not that bad, right? Or that it’s already too late, and there’s nothing they can do anyway. Shit. We’re not prepared for incidents like this.

December 21 Addendum I
I have to distract myself from the thought that the woman might have infected us all with some deadly virus. And I forgot to write that our new arrival is rather strange. She was at least wearing a jacket, but underneath, she had only put on a long purple dress, high-heeled shoes, and white velvet gloves. The clothes looked anything but cheap. She looked more like she wanted to go to a gala than work in a research laboratory. Who walks around like that in Antarctica? Well, maybe she wasn’t on duty when the outbreak happened. That would also explain why she managed to escape and, according to her own statement, is probably not infected. But even as casual wear, her outfit looks pretty bizarre in a place like this.
She had to wait quite a long time in the snowmobile until the provisional quarantine was ready. Wasn’t she cold in her thin clothes? She didn’t complain. And I couldn’t see any signs that she was freezing either. Admittedly, I kept a safe distance. Speaking of snowmobiles, judging by the tracks, she was driving as if she was drunk and almost crashed into one of the buildings. Can she just not drive, or are these signs that she’s not feeling well? A fever, perhaps?
Also, I remembered Doug mentioning in the first or second week that Umbrella isn’t even doing research at the facility anymore. It’s supposed to be a materials storage facility or something like that. Well, Dr. Edwards claims she is a researcher there. I’ll ask Doug about the facility again when I get a chance.
December 21 Addendum II
Nicole*** wanted to contact AAD and ask how we should proceed with Dr. Edwards. However, due to the storm, there is currently no way through with our communication system. Always at the best possible time, of course! At least it’s not broken. Nicole has checked it. In a few days, the storm should ease a little, although not stop. She’ll try again then. Until then, we’re on our own. As old as the communication system is, I’m not surprised that it doesn’t work currently. It probably dates back to when the station was founded in the 70s.

i am experiencing a dilemma
should i bring my backpack that can hold two devices to uni or should i bring the smaller one that can only hold one device but is way cuter
BACKPACK 1
pros:
- can fit two devices (laptop + ipad)
cons:
- idk if i’ll be using the laptop cause it’s so old the fans go crazy when i open it
- idk if i can use the ipad cause the keyboard (on the case) won’t work and i’ll be too slow typing on the screen keyboard
^basically i might need both
- not ugly but not cute and REALLY big
BACKPACK 2
pros:
- SO CUTE - has a little catbus attached and i wanna make friends
cons:
- can only fit the ipad (which might not work) and i might need my laptop
- could try taking notes with my apple pencil but it’s a knock off so while it still works great the battery is…
^also my handwriting still sucks so unfortunately it can’t detect half the words i write
don’t have to read below but this is what i originally wrote it’s basically the same thing but with more detail
1. the first backpack is really big and it’ll be heavy if i carry it around. HOWEVER i don’t know if i’l need two devices or not. i’d be bringing an old laptop which has fans that haven’t been cleaned in 6 years so it goes crazy when it’s open and an ipad that’s about 3 years old but the keyboard won’t work so i don’t know if i can type notes fast enough
2. the second backpack is smaller and would fit my ipad and is so cute but still has enough space for everything else just not the laptop. i could take notes using my apple pencil but i’m not used to it and it’s a knock off (literally $170 cheaper omg) so i’m worried that it won’t work. it has so far but the battery is ass (ngl i’ve never tried an actual apple pencil before though so the battery might just be like that)

hi there, just wanted to say i love your page a lot and appreciate all the info you put out. :3
we’re a system of i don’t know how many members, undiagnosed but we’ve been tracking symptoms for years and we got a specialist about a few months ago. i don’t feel like she’s taking us seriously and wanting to move forward with diagnosis, or at the very least treatment. we got an assessment and she says we may have DPDR, but i’ve had day- or week-long blackouts/grayouts and every time i mention them, she sort of glosses over it. i know there’s a possibility we don’t have DID or OSDD but i feel very strongly about it, and i’d like to tell her without being too forceful. do you have any advice? and do you also have advice on tracking alters + switches? much appreciated!
During our system discovery, we kept a notebook. Alters signed off if they could and wanted to, and we wrote everything from research to memories to conversations between us. When we were in a position to talk to our therapist, we handed that over and ran.
Y’all don’t have to do that, but there are a lot of pros to writing it down. A cheap spiral notebook would do it, and you have the benefit of seeing changes in organization and handwriting if those come up.
There are a few tests you can take just be reading the questions yourself. The DES 1 and 2 both have options to fill in bubbles on an internet-accessible device, with 2 being the more relevant version for you. The bottom describes possibilities with your calculated number.
There’s several online versions of the MID that compare your results to those of DID, OSDD-1, and PTSD test takers if you run it with a spreadsheet software. They usually require you type the number in the cell, then map it out in a color titled whatever you put in as ‘client name’. We never could use a cellphone for that, though you can run any Word sheet on the free version.
We use (*cough*) Simply Plural for alter tracking. You make little profiles, only requiring a name or placeholder, and add them to front with a button. You can choose ‘add’ or ‘replace’ as the default button.
Mostly we leave sticky notes for each other with task lists and daily information. We have a journal for therapy (memories, rants, research) and one for communication (conversations, front log, calendar).
Try introducing yourself and asking questions about the others on paper. Possessive switching makes this method look good, but switches that feel more like changing or shifting are more common and also require communication.
Alter-specific memories are common in complex dissociative disorders, and journals allow you to see those different experiences even if you don’t notice switches.
There’s a lot of use for the journals; those little discrepancies add up, and you don’t have to face the others too soon (which is a common phobia in systems with trauma-holding and trauma-free members).
The gathering of evidence makes it harder to turn you away. You can always fall back on the slow unmasking, using plural language and referring to the others. Working through trauma introduces the possible origins of dissociation, and clinicians might believe you more if you start there.
Not every therapist is willing to work with systems, and it’s up to y’all whether you could make progress with someone who isn’t. Therapy is yours, and your therapist should be a stone you can lean on.
If you do stay and don’t work with the system, consider working on that separately and deciding amongst yourselves who goes to each session. You don’t have to do trauma work to work through individual problems, though it is preferable your therapist recognize you as individuals.
And honestly? It’s okay if you don’t show the typical markers or have trauma on hand. If you are a CDD system, the hard parts will come up in time. If not, you can still work on system adaptions and quality of life.
Good luck with presenting your case. I hope your specialist will rise to meet you, but I believe you can find a way no matter how it goes.

30 Ways Gay Couples Can Embrace a 1950s Vintage Lifestyle
Tumblr media
1. Establish traditional gender roles. Even in same-sex relationships, couples can assign different roles to each partner, such as one partner being “the man” and the other “the wife.”
2. Utilize classic cleaning techniques from the 1950s. Polishing furniture, ironing linens and clothes washing using a hand-cranking device can be a fun project.
3. Embrace the style. A 1950s-inspired wardrobe of sweater vests, bow ties, slacks, saddle shoes and loafers can create a classic look with a modern twist. Or go the rockabilly route with denim and leather.
4. Upgrade the kitchen with mid-century wares. Invest in classic kitchenware such as Pyrex casserole dishes and Tupperware sets.
5. Learn some swing or jitterbug moves. Register for local dance classes or hold dance parties in the living room.
6. Send letters or postcards to each other. Handwrite some words of love to your partner and include a pressed flower or favorite recipe as an extra touch.
7. Relax in silk kimonos or satin robes. Vintage robes will make your partner smile when they tie it around their waist every morning.
8. Utilize mid-century magazines for decoration. Hang up Life magazines with classic covers or revel in the styles and fashions of early fashion magazines.
9. Adopt classic lifestyle habits such as a morning cup of homemade coffee, afternoon tea and a proper bedtime routine.
10. Bring back the classics. Everything from detective books to classic romance novels will make for great bedtime stories and conversation starters. Throw in some gay pulp fiction for spice.
11. Buy vintage kitchenware. Collecting mid-century cutlery and silverware will make your kitchen feel homey and inviting.
12. Spend a day gardening. Plant roses, tomatoes or other flowering plants as a fun couple’s activity and add a touch of beauty to the front yard.
13. Have picnics with cheese and fresh prepared foods from the market. Pack a box of classic treats such as apples, nuts and pickles in a wicker basket.
14. Care for your pet as if it were a child. Spend quality time together playing with your beloved pet or simply brushing their fur or petting them.
15. Play vintage board games. Connect with each other by buying classic board games such as Monopoly or Risk.
16. Cook dinner together. Whip up some classic dishes such as steak and mashed potatoes or pork chops and corn on the cob.
17. Spruce up your living room with mid-century furniture. Invest in more modern, retro-style furniture to give your living room a touch of charm.
18. Make fun activities from the 1950s such as baking, cleaning and home improvement projects. Have fun as a couple as you both reminisce about the past and create new memories.
19. Listen to classic music on vinyl records. Play nostalgic tunes from classic artists such as Elvis Presley or Frank Sinatra.
20. Collect antiques from the 1950s. Invest in classic wares such as tea sets or vintage lamps and use them as conversation starters or simply as decorative pieces.
21. Dress up for special occasions. Pull out all the stops and dress to the nines when attending special occasions such as anniversaries or holidays.
22. Have fun in the sun. Go for a vintage-style picnic near a lake or riverside to take advantage of the beautiful summer weather.
23. Get reading. Get your hands on the classics such as Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women,” and Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind.”
24. Walk together in nature. Put on some sturdy shoes or cowboy boots and take a stroll together in a nearby wooded area.
25. Buy old movies from the 1950s. Pop some popcorn and cuddle up on the couch as you watch the great films of the era.
26. Join a local vintage car club. Spend some time together admiring classic cars and seeing how the vintage lifestyle is still alive.
27. Learn to play instruments of the era. Take a banjo or ukulele lesson and you’ll have plenty of fun making music together.
28. Get lost is a classic bookstore. Lose yourself in the past as you browse through old books and share stories with each other.

Hi there! I’ve been getting back into critical role recently (only on episode 14 of C3 though ,:1) and I wanted to ask if you could please do a thing with Ashton and Imogen where it’s one of those soulmate tropes where you can write on your arm and your soulmate will see it? Thank you so much!!
Pardon the emoticon btw! I’m not sure if emojis translate through asks
What You Write On Your Skin Appears On Your Soulmate’s
Fandom: Critical Role, Campaign 3
Characters: Ashton Greymoore, Imogen Temult
Type of Request: Headcanons
Notes: Ooh nice! I need to catch up on the last two episodes, but buckle in cause C3 is a hell of a time~ And emoticons are just fine, I think depending on device is if emojis pop up as opposed to just being boxes? Idk the specifics but I do know I had lots of fun with this ask <3
Part 2 :: Part 3
Tumblr media
Ashton
I have no idea if Ashton would notice. He doesn't really have "skin"?
They're a rock person so any drawing you do is all wonky when translating to their body.
That said, they've tried drawing on themself to see if maybe they get something back. His hand writing is shit and it's only amplified with how difficult it is finding a smooth writing surface for you.
But they still try. They talk lots of shit about soulmates, but is interested in meeting his own. It could be amusing especially when you realize he's an earth genasi and that's why it seems he's writing in code.
Imogen
She has written down so many shopping lists on her hand/arms. Can't help but be amused when she looks back and sees your handwriting of adding something else.
There's some anxiousness as well excitement over the idea of her meeting her soulmate. Until then, she's glad to send you messages on her arms.
Many curses leave her should her quill break or she spills ink on herself. She's trying to have a moment and ends up leaving a mess instead.
There’s probably been many times where she’s absentmindedly let Laudna draw on her skin and so you get many messages from her (quite a bit being, “I know you’re Imogen’s soulmate but I will destroy you if you ever hurt her.”)

Chapter 3: Transmigrator.
You woke up a couple hours later to find a basket of food in the sick bay by your bed. There was an orange beside it, a paper flower, a book, pen and ink, and a sword propped up nearby. It very much felt like an assortment of Get Well blessings, but different enough to remind you where you were.
Sitting up slowly you grabbed one of the sandwiches and began to eat. You were ravenously hungry after everything that had happened. The two bowls of broth had vanished with all the muscle tension from the return of your memories, and the sandwiches were far more filling.
Just as delicious as well. It was a small wonder to you that the entire crew wasn’t rotund. It’d be difficult to control yourself with such delicious food so readily available.
You were on the second sandwich when Chopper came into the room.
“You’re awake!” He says cheerfully, coming in and closing the door before bringing his chair over to the bed and climbing into it. “How are you feeling?”
“Good, I think. I’m still a little groggy, but the sandwiches are delicious. Are these all gifts?” You ask, nodding your head to the assortment of items.
“Yeah, I had to remove some. Luffy brought you some meat, but Sanji’s keeping it safe for you. Zoro brought sake, but you shouldn’t have alcohol yet, so I moved that away in case I didn’t come back in time to stop you. The tangerine is from Nami, the paper flower’s from Usopp. Robin and Brook brought the empty journal and pen set.” Chopper checks your vitals as he talks. “I think it would be good if you kept a journal. We don’t know what caused your amnesia, but if it happens again, seeing details in your own handwriting will be more comforting than anything else that could be offered.”
“Your logic is sound, Dr. Chopper.” You admit, turning the paper flower over in your hands. It was not hastily crafted, and you could see several different tones of paper folded together to create a delicate ivory white blossom. “These gifts are all very thoughtful.”
“Jinbei says that his gift to you will be describing this world from his perspective, when you’re ready.” Chopper offers.
“He is from elsewhere as well?” You ask.
“Not from another world, no. Jinbei is a fishman, and while they are part of this world they tend to stay separate from the surface.” Chopper explains. “Some of that is due to the past, and some of that is due to them, being, well, fishmen.”
“When one is adapted to the water, one stays in it. I can understand that. Master Jinbei then is unique to the surface.” You eat another sandwich. “I’m sure his perspective will be useful. What I know of this world is still brief. It is made up of mostly islands, with vast expanses of water. There is a world government, but the islands are often left to their own devices. The… marines are the knights of your government, and we do not like them or the government.”
“We?”
“Myself and your crew.”
Chopper smiles. “We like some of them, but there is a big difference of opinion to consider.”
“Hm. If something happens, I suppose it is best if I follow someone else’s lead then.” You point to the sword against the wall. “Is that for me as well?”
“Huh, oh yeah, Franky made it.” Chopper explains. “Franky’s not a swordsmith, but he says it should give you something to use for practice at the minimum. Until we can find you something else.”
“Thoughtful gifts indeed.” You muse with a smile. “Am I free to go for now, Dr. Chopper?”
Chopper smiles up at you. “Yes, you can do pretty much anything except try to go swimming again.”
You laugh as you slide off the bed. “I will wait until we anchor somewhere, and I can practice in shallower and safer waters.” You promise Chopper as you pick up the sword. The scabbard was wooden, lined with felt and polished beautifully. It was simple, but elegant, and you had to admire Franky’s craftmanship for something that wasn’t his primary vocation.
Pulling the sword out you were surprised to see an actual sword. You had expected a wooden training blade, or even scrap metal pounded into a decent semblance of a sword shape. What you held in your hands instead was something that you would’ve had easily gifted to your liege back home. You put it back into scabbard and turned to Chopper once more before stepping out onto the deck.
“May I leave my gifts here until I know where I will be sleeping?”
“Of course!”
You attached the scabbard to your waist with the leather straps Franky had worked into it as you stepped around to the open grassy area of the deck. You thought maybe the leather had been worked by Usopp – there was something about the style that reminded you of the flower than had been in the sickbay. You adjusted the straps and how it sat on your hip a little bit and when it felt right you pulled the sword fully from the scabbard.
It was beautifully balanced. If Franky wanted to make a name for himself as a swordsmith, he could take over the entire continent back on your world. A year of practice and his swords would be legendary.
You focused on the movements, taking yourself through the practice routines you had been learning your entire life. It felt good to move your body in a way that required little thought, allowing your mind to focus on the details of your situation. The easy movements let you trace the line of your memories without getting lost in the emotions and physical reactions of them.
This wasn’t like when you jumped off the ship and the sensation of falling had triggered a flood of memories, this was you turning each page carefully. Minding the words, and considering the impacts.
By the time you finished you had a decently clear picture of what happened. The only thing you didn’t know was how you’d gotten from your world to here. Your memories end abruptly in the middle of your day in Winternight, and the resume with you walking on water before all hell broke loose.
“That was like watching a dance.” Robin muses, flashing you a smile that shows she means well.
“It was very elegant.” Sanji says in agreement. “Much better than watching that mossy brute swing his swords around.”
“Ah… thanks, I think?” You manage before offering a small bow. “Thank you for the delicious sandwiches, they were divine.”
Sanji’s eyes went wide, and his face goes pink. “It’s… it was nothing, I’m the cook, I can’t have anyone going hungry on my watch.” He puts his hand up to his nose and mouth and starts toward the kitchen. “Excuse me, ladies.”
“Is… Is he okay?”
Robin smiles and nods, “He is. Our esteemed chef has a soft spot for ladies and praise.”
“He needs more training,” a familiar voice grumbles and look over to see the swordsman sitting on the bench around the mast.
You step over to him, but something in you compels you to not bow. “I owe you an apology, and I also have a question, if you don’t mind.” You say the second part hastily, realizing he was getting ready to argue against the apology.
He looks at you for a moment with his good eye and then closes it. “What?”
You keep your voice low to avoid being overheard, but you’re sure he can hear you. “I struck you in the water.” His eye opens, but he doesn’t say anything. “I was trying to use magic, but that power doesn’t exist here. So… what did I do?”
“… Haki, probably.” He says after a moment.
“Can you teach me?”
“Eh?” Zoro looks shocked and confused.
“Oh, uh, no, I mean I can ask someone else. I just… don’t want to accidentally do that to anyone else.” You admit scratching the back of your head. “You’re sturdy, but if I hurt anyone else I’d-.”
“Fine.”
“Eh?” It was your turn to be caught off-guard.
“Follow me.” Zoro says shortly and walks to the helm with you.
Jinbei’s there, and once you’re standing beside him, Zoro gestures to the older man and then walks off.
“Eh? Eh?” You look at Jinbei in confusion, and he looks back before you both look at Zoro who is already gone from the area. “Uhm.”
Jinbei smiles. “Feeling better Miss (Y/N)?”
“Y-yes! Yes, I am, thank you for asking Master Jinbei.” You reply, the conversation helping to shake off your confusion. “I… I’m sorry, I asked him for help in learning about this Haki that he spoke of and he brought me here.”
“Ah.” Jinbei says knowingly. “Then allow me to instruct you. Young Zoro’s way of learning is very similar to the captain’s, and neither are done safely on the ship. When one learns by doing it is also difficult to teach another.”
“Ah. So, he is helping me learn by leading me to an instructor.” You say, looking back toward the deck.
“So it seems.” Jinbei agrees.
“Oh, and you also offered to provide me a better perspective on this world.” You bow. “I am grateful for everything, Master Jinbei.”
Jinbei laughs and there’s something deeply comforting about it. “It will be my pleasure. We’ll begin with the basics of Armament and Observation Haki, that way you can practice on your own when I’m busy.”
Over the next hour Jinbei walked you through the theory and practical applications of Haki. You caught on quickly, as you had suspected given what had happened earlier, channeling and utilizing Haki wasn’t too different from channeling and using winter magic. The applications of the two were different, though still fundamentally similar. Winter magic was meant for offense and defense, and so was Haki. But while winter magic had a chilling effect, often manifesting as tangible ice, haki was an invisible force that had no manifestation.
Advanced Haki techniques were a consideration for another day, your first desire was to simply make sure that you could control yourself going forward. The last thing you needed to do was harm a different member of this crew and have their guardian hold you to account for it.
You were trying to get back home, not be slashed into itty bitty pieces by someone who carries two extra swords.
“That is alarmingly fast progression, Miss (Y/N).” Jinbei admits as the sun begins to dip low.
“Haki it seems, is not too dissimilar from mana.” You explain. “Which means I have years of experience. Please don’t give me too much credit, and your instruction was very easy to follow, I don’t know how long I would’ve fumbled around on my own.”
“Oi! Dinner’s ready!” You heard Sanji’s voice from the mid-deck and headed toward the kitchen with Jinbei close behind.
Mealtimes with the crew were a lesson in chaotic control. You weren’t surprised to learn they had been restraining themselves the first time, but the difference between then and now was vast. On the plus side, it was a great way to work on your observation Haki while also eating delicious food.
Bonding over meals was also a good way to get to know the crew, as it gave you a chance to not only interact with all of them, but also watch how they interacted with one another. Half-way through the meal you realized this crew was more of a family than what you would think of for a pirate crew. Whatever motivated them to work together wasn’t simple adoration for their captain, nor was it desperation to survive in a world that had abandoned them.
It also certainly wasn’t fear. They may be protecting one another from something, but they certainly weren’t following Luffy out of fear.
“What’s brought you all together?” You ask during a brief moment of peace during the meal. “If it’s not rude of me to… ask.” You pause slightly as you realize the entire room is pointing at Luffy.
Turning toward Luffy, he just smiles and laughs light-heartedly. “I’m going to become the King of Pirates!” He announces.
You don’t know what the King of Pirates is, or what he would need to do to become one, but you’re suddenly struck with how certain you are that it will happen. It’s only a matter of when, not if.
“I see.” You say a little awe-struck. “Well, then I will do my best to help.”
“We’re going to help you get back home.” Luffy says matter-of-factly as he reaches over to someone else’s plate and snags a piece of food.
“Huh? Wait, are you going to put your goal on hold to help me?”
“Well, not completely,” Nami answers. “We have no idea how we’re going to help you get back home, so we’re going to look for clues while we’re traveling. We also have a couple places we can revisit to see if there’s anything useful there.”
“But -.”
“Captain’s already decided.” Zoro says, taking a drink.
“I… well, thank you.” You say trying to keep your emotions under control. “You owe me nothing and I haven’t even repaid you for saving my life, so I am deeply grateful for this, truly. I am in your care.”
“Hey, after this, Robin and I will show you where you’ll be staying, and we can see what kind of clothes you can use.” Nami offers. “I don’t imagine you want to wear pajamas all the time.”
You can feel your lip quivering a bit and manage a nod before going back to eating.
Ending up in a world completely different from your own, cut off from your Duchy and the magic surrounding it, with no explanation as to why, had been immensely stressful. It was almost worse knowing how utterly stranded you were, than when you didn’t even know who you were. To make it all worse you had been pursued by powerful people and deemed a threat before you even had a chance to explain yourself.
The whole encounter had nearly been the end of you, battered and left for dead in the middle of a vast ocean with nothing to keep you afloat but a barrel that had been slowly filling with water. Luffy’s hand had been a gift from the gods, and you hadn’t even been aware of yourself and your surroundings enough to understand how he had pulled you onto the ship when it first happened. After that you found yourself surrounded by mythical looking creatures, the undead, and a demon with green hair.
You had been lost, confused, scared, and even afraid of your own body until your memories started to return.
Despite all that, you felt that you were the luckiest person in this world.
A/N – Whew – almost done with setup and we can get into the story (I hope the setup hasn’t been boring, I felt like I needed to put down a good foundation for it, or it was going to feel off-balance, but so far this seems a good mix of juggling the whole crew, creating bonds/connections/etc., and setting up for things going forward. Also, I totally expected this to go from “ocean to Grandline Metro” but apparently we are ALL going on adventure and I’mma have to draw another map).

Digital Witchcraft 101
When you’re researching witchcraft and Paganism, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that there’s One Right Way to do it. When I was a baby witch, I thought adhering to Wiccan traditions and principles was the “correct” way. My first few months of research were filled with fantasies of elaborate altars carefully arranged with God and Goddess symbols and elemental objects, high-energy rituals for the sabbats, and an emphasis on incorporating various herbs, oils, and incenses into my practice. I looked online trying to find a wand that was both beautiful and inexpensive. I wondered where in my tiny cluttered room I could set up an altar. I tried my hand at keeping a Book of Shadows and planned to fill it with all the spells and correspondences I could find.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with these practices, and if they work for you, that’s fantastic! But it’s also important to acknowledge that magick isn’t one-size-fits-all and some methods aren’t accessible or feasible for everyone, for a variety of reasons.
Magickal tools like wands, athames, crystals, and tarot decks can be expensive, making them out of reach for witches who are unemployed or living in poverty. Ritual work tends to require a lot of focused physical and mental energy that witches with chronic illnesses and fatigue simply don’t have, as well as being time-consuming to perform. And, like myself, many witches are living in homes where it might be unsafe to reveal their craft to family members, which means that magickal tools and fancy altars aren’t an option.
Fortunately, non-traditional witchcraft is just as powerful and effective as the “traditional” stuff. (Sometimes even more so, because it allows you so much freedom to customize and figure out what works for you!) One of the most accessible and versatile tools available is digital technology. If you’ve got a computer and/or phone, there are tons of ways you can use them for your practice. Here are just a few ideas that could be useful to witches at any level of experience.
~
1. Digital Book of Shadows
I think most of us enjoy the images we see online of super-detailed grimoires and journals. The fancy leather covers, scrawling handwriting, stunning artwork, and beautiful border designs. The tables of correspondences and hand-drawn moon phase calendars. Beauty and detail like that makes people excited about witchcraft! It’s basically the bullet journal inspiration of the witchy world.
But if you’re like me, looking at those gorgeous flip-throughs on Tumblr and Instagram can also feel overwhelming. Not all of us feel great about our art skills. Not all of us have the time it takes to handwrite pages and pages of spells and lists. (My arm starts hurting after a few paragraphs of handwriting anything, to be honest.) If you have nosy or controlling housemates, a physical book might not be safe to keep. And physical grimoires can also be tougher to organize. I always worry that I’ll have something to add after a designated section is entirely full. I may be a witch, but I can’t just magickally make another blank page appear where I need it.
A digital grimoire or Book of Shadows, though? Easy to maintain.
Using a word processing program like Microsoft Word or Google Docs can make organization a breeze. As an example, I use Google Docs for storing a lot of my witchy information, split into their own sections: Correspondences, Deities, Holidays, Ideas/reminders, Journal prompts, Spells/rituals, and Tarot/divination. If you do a lot of research online, you can copy and paste relevant information into a document within seconds instead of copying it down by hand. You don’t have to worry about running out of space, either.
You can still personalize a digital version by using colorful fonts, copying and pasting pictures, and taking advantage of the templates offered by your word processor.
~
2. Digital Spellwork
One advantage of using your device in your magick is that the electricity powering it adds an extra boost of energy to your spells. I like to visualize the cord keeping my laptop charged also charging up my magick. This can be helpful for us witches who have issues with energy regulation and fatigue.
There are also countless ways you can cast spells with a computer as your tool. Some witches use social media likes and sharing to charge and cast their spells. Others use emojis to symbolize their intent. I’ve personally used my desktop background as a symbol with the intention that the spell will charge whenever I look at it. If you’re into writing magick, you can type up a quick incantation and activate it either by saving or deleting the document. If you’ve got witchy friends, you can cast and charge by messaging each other.
There are even more ideas out there that I haven’t listed. Get creative. Take a look at the built-in abilities of your device and figure out how you can harness them to focus your magick.
~
3. Digital Divination
I am, above all else, a tarot witch. I was unintentionally doing digital witchcraft long before calling myself a witch when my teenage self started using a website that gave free computer-generated tarot and rune readings. It was how I first started learning the meanings of the cards and where I first connected to tarot as a divination system.
Years later, I still take advantage of free online readings from time to time. This is especially true for moon phase readings — I can never guarantee that I’ll have the focus and motivation needed to clear off my desk, get out a deck and tarot journal, and do a full spread. Using computer-generated readings and typing my interpretations is a lot easier sometimes, particularly on days where my depression is strong.
There are plenty of other ways to use technology as a divination tool. You can use random word or writing generators for insight. Your digital music library is all you need for shufflemancy (the practice of using shuffled songs for divination). Word processors are ideal for quick-paced automatic writing sessions. Get creative and see what you can come up with.
~
4. Digital Worship
For those witchcraft practitioners who work with deities, there are plenty of ways to honor and interact with them using technology. The number one method I’ve found is the use of e-shrines. If you don’t have the space or you’re unable to be open with your practice, e-shrines are a great alternative to physical altars. All you need is a digital space where you can leave prayers and offerings.
Any social media site can house an e-shrine, but my personal favorite is Pinterest. I have an entire board dedicated to the deities I work with where each deity is given their own section. You can put anything you want on your shrine — I personally save any quotes, photos, and artwork that remind me of them. Your deities will appreciate the time you put into collecting such posts. An e-shrine also serves as a space where you can go to connect with your deities by reading or viewing things that remind you of their energy.
I know that looking at others’ elaborate methods of practice can lead to frustration and self-comparison. Even though I’ve gotten better at embracing my own unique way of making magick, I still often feel a pang of envy or inadequacy when I see those gorgeous Instagram altars packed with massive crystals, expensive tarot decks, and bundles of herbs and flowers. I sometimes worry that my magick won’t be as effective without all the traditional tools.
~
But the most important lesson I’ve seen and learned since beginning my practice is this: there is only one absolute essential you will ever need in witchcraft and that is you. Your magick comes from within. Any tools that you use in the process are simply there to help you focus your intention. That means that there’s no shame in using whatever options are available to you. If you want that added focus and your computer or your phone is all that you can or want to use, go for it. I promise your magick will be just as powerful and beautiful.

Things that help with focus/productivity, while I'm thinking about it.
This is by no means a comprehensive list but as someone who struggles with keeping up with workflow (especially going back to college), and balancing taking real breaks and how my brain works/keeps up with tasks, I've tried a lot of different apps, methods, and other such stuff -- especially stuff targeted toward ADHD brains and such.
So here is a non-exhaustive list of things I've tried and my rough opinions on them. A Disclaimer: I prefer handwriting things and tend to lose or forget things if they are on a screen. So please take any application/browser use with that grain of salt.
Notion
Calendar, wiki-maker, to-do list tracker, automation and innovation that excites. I get very overwhelmed in Notion, there's so much you can do there, but I get the interest in how it works and such. I use it to track my reading list (a snippet shown below) and a few other things that I don't really want to put somewhere else (because the tables on Notion auto-format, which is nice), so it's like a good 4/10 for me.
Tumblr media
Obsidian
The markdown file creator and organization vault system. It's daunting to get into, a bit confusing at first, but there's a ton of videos on how to get started and how to get organized and it's so nice to have everything link together in a way that follows a legitimate train of thought. You will have to force it to be your second brain, but I like it so much better than other note-taking apps. 9/10 (it is so terrifying to get into). Bonus, though, look at my baby:
Tumblr media
Google Calendar
yanno, one of the OGs. I want to use Microsoft calendar but that application has crashed every device I have tried to open it on. Google Calendar is good for organizing events, doing all the stuff calendar's do, and setting up recurring events and editing them with little hassle. I don't work in a team or need anyone to look at my calendar's except me, so I can't speak to that functionality, but I know it's used by a lot of people for that reason. 7/10 just because I only recently learned how to customize colors.
Microsoft Calendar
just to be fair. It would be an amazing application: integrated to-do list that is in-app, a very clean weekly look, sticky notes, all of it is hooked directly into the window you're looking at your emails at, it can auto-set reminders on a separate tab for you. Except, again, it has crashed every single piece of technology I own, including my university desktops. Just from opening it. 2/10 for wasted potential. If it works for you, I am so happy for you, but I cannot get it to work for me and that's what I'm focused on here.
Bullet Journaling
Another classic. Ryder Carrol was on something else. Quick, efficient, a great way to use up the notebooks you bought that you swore you'd use and then didn't touch for months because it "wasn't the right thing to use it for". You don't need the special dot-grid book, you don't need fancy fucking layouts. You just need a pen, some kind of notebook, and a list of things you need to get done. I love being extra about it, but there's no reason to. It's a good planner, I like having a physical copy of my life to look at and organize my thoughts with, and it's fun to do. 9/10 for easy onboarding and versatile creativity.
Various "Calendar/tracker/etc" Apps
I've gone through the gauntlet on these. Productivity apps that "plant a tree" so long as you don't use your phone so you can get stuff done, group calendar programs and browser applications, minimalist to-do lists on your phone, maximalist to-do lists on your phone, Habitica, etc. Fully ymmv on any of those, I do recommend checking out the to-do lists if you need them, but unless you have a team to manage, you don't need a calendar that isn't Google/iCal/Microsoft realistically.
Sticky Notes
Bad. Terrible idea. I hate doing it, I never remember them, and it feels wasteful. If it works for you, I'm so happy for you (genuine), but I hate it. 1/10.
White Board
Like a physical one. Full opposite of Sticky Notes, I'm not gonna lie. It's delightful, I love having it, it's not wasteful in the same way, and there's a satisfaction to erasing shit off that board. If you can afford a big one, get a big one. I have a desk one and I love it it's so nice to have. 10/10 no notes.
There's not a lot else I can think of at the moment, but thank you for reading if you've gotten this far. I do have YouTube recommendations if you would like to learn to use (say) Obsidian or Notion. I also have videos on formatting Google Calendar.

okay first off, you have a drop dead gorgeous handwriting TT jealousy is literally taking over me rn!
and next i need some recommendations :/
I'm looking for an affordable Android stylus pen for my digital ones and you are literally the best person to ask this to TT
also, could you please share what application you use for the digital notes? currently im using one notes but i just wanted to try something new for a bit.
I haven't used any other pencil other than Apple’s so I'll suggest that you refer few YouTube videos —
1. emilystudying
2. Brad Colbow
Note : the roundtip stylus isn't meant for drawing, but you can use it to take notes. And Logitech’s work in any device without the need to pair & if you do decide to get an iPad someday, it'll be able to perform all sorts of functions like an Apple Pencil (i.e. scribble, shortcuts) + it's prettier
I personally use CollaNotes for note-taking (it's completely free although its just for IOS)
In terms of note-taking (Android)
Try out Touchnotes , as far as I recall almost all the needed features are free.
Google Keep is another app to try (doesn't really have many features but it may fit your requirements)
You'd want to have Gridzzly to make your own templates!
Also, you can use drawing apps like Sketchbook or IBIS Paint for rough work, note-taking or making mindmaps because :
1. as they are art apps, they have tons of brushes, including Ballpoint pens (and you can create your own highlighters by decreasing opacity of round brushes)
2. choose your canvas size (which will be your paper size — potrait, landscape whatever)
3. you can import writing templates (grid, hexagonal etc)
4. Sketchbook & IBIS both provide cloud storage
there are cons for this approach like — you can't create a notebook, you can just use 1 paper at a time.
And yeah, OneNote can get boring after a while & the export system isn't impressive either :/
feel free to reach out if you have any other questions, if I can, I would be glad to help!

memory back in his universe flooded my mind during a breakdown so now you have this vent-induced sketch, enjoy I guess :D
Tumblr media
Texts under the cut:
Pre incident Memory snas; a summary in sketch form + monologues
1. "Mrrp Meow Mew Mrrp-Mew" (He just woke up, he's fine.)
2. "I honestly have no idea"
3. "Traveler. Look into my eyes and tell me. Did you or did you not commit arson?"
4. [Things I've learned from my job: 1. Acting, 2. How much of a pain having to "serve" everyone is, 3. Left to their own devices, people can be extremely stupid, 4. Being an ambassador is not as fun and worthwhile as being a wizard. (Sorry, too lazy to handwrite this)]
5. "I. Am. Perfectly. Healthy." (Is sleep deprived, malnourished, had too much socialising, overworked)
6. "It's not that I don't want to help you traveler, my brother gets upset when I skip lunch you see, especially if I just did for 4 days in a row."

ARCHIVE M: Transmission 1
No: 3531
SECURITY STATUS: Restricted
CLASSIFICATION: Audio-Visual Equipment
RECOVERY: M35,20,1:6
ACQUIRED BY: Saul/DUP/.omicron, Mechanicus
ACQUISITION CONDITIONS: Archaeotech Dig
PROVENANCE: Albia, Terra, M1,19.
PRIMARY INVESTIGATOR OBSERVATIONS:
Collected artifact/item/device from Albia:Brittanicum:North Europa. Archaeotech Dig investigated M1,19 urban site (Londinium Tertius.)
Item is a pict-capture device, monochromatic, photogram, manual. Very early type, using photographic plates. Metal, wood, and rubber construction. Arcane Machine Spirit.
Words “Goulston Street” etched with dull blade/edge of metal tool in precisely eleven locations scattered around the surface of the device.
There is a mounting point for a tripod; the tripod is missing.
Remarkable condition, otherwise.
OBSERVED DEVIANCE:
Subject appears to function as a standard archaic pict-capture machine. However, upon use as such, images developed using Subject are imprinted with hand scrawled graffiti that reads as follows, unaltered:
“The Juwes are the men who will not be blamed for nothing.”
This graffito/inscription/epigraphy appears to have been taken from another photograph, a sort of layering. Writing in primitive pigment, ink, or painting. Handwriting style hurried, frenetic. Likely male hand, human. Does not correspond in any way to words “Goulston Street” carved on exterior of device casing. Writers of the two are different individuals, in our estimation.
A) This was initially believed to be a problem within the inner glass/silicate/ reflective lenses, but replacing these portions of Subject did nothing to appease the Machine Spirit.
B) Acolytes removed each part still present within Subject and replaced them with replicated pieces of the originals. These did nothing to change presence of graffito/inscription/epigraphy.
C) Acolytes attempted replacement of parts with new designs intended to serve same role, accommodate archaeotech design. In no instance did this have any effect upon the presence of graffito/inscription/epigraphy.
Indeed, in all cases, when at least one portion of the original device was present, no matter how insignificant (connective screws, lense caps, etc.), the same graffito/inscriptive/epigraphy appears.
Meaning/Intent/Purpose unclear. Preservation/Archive/Isolation recommended.
ADDENDUM 1
ADDED, ARCHIVE M - Orator/SIM/.psi
ADDENDUM 2
Investigative Notes, Legion Relictory.
Research Notes 1, K.:
We have been able to replicate the same results, and can tell you that the notes by the Martian investigators remain applicable. ANY portion of the original device, when attached to Subject, seems to replicate effect.
One could, of course, completely reconstruct the device in entirety, and this would in theory remove the observed manifestation.
Research Notes 2,K:
Attempted reconstruction using entirely replicated parts. No repeated effect, except for a lovely if utterly arcane and somewhat useless pict-capture device.
Research Notes 3, A:
At request of Krateros, tests were conducted using replicated pict-capture device (hereafter: "Camera"), with portions of Subject within varying ranges (5, 50, 500 meters) of Camera. Camera unaffected by presence of Subject or portions thereof. We hesitate to replicate markings seen on original. Recommend redirection to Librarius for further analysis.
ADDENDUM 3
Remarks by Epistolary-Sergeant Tyche:
Under controlled conditions, markings were reproduced in "Camera." Analogous effect failed to manifest. No Warp energy detected within "Camera."
Remarks by Epistolary-Centurion Monroe:
This thing fairly reeks of Warp energy, but we cannot determine source. No apparent corruption of individuals handling or exposed to Subject. Recommend redirection to Epistolary Primus.
ADDENDUM 4
Remarks by Legionary-Archivist Kalinekos:
Epistolary Primus has asked us to investigate the history of these devices and referenced inscription. Nothing unusual stands out beyond the provenance of the name "Goulston Street," which seems to refer to a series of notorious homicides sometime in M1,19. "Goulston Street Graffito" referenced by archival materials. Subject's connection unclear.
Remarks by Legionary-Archivist Bolobeo:
Looked further into "Goulston Street Graffito" at request, Epistolary Primus. Regret records quite fragmentary. M30 period reconstruction of archives suggests series of murders, unsolved.
Remarks by Legionary-Archivist Kalinekos:
We had a look at this. A very close look. We are completely stumped here. Requesting further instructions from Legionary Epistolary-Primus.
