Canonical Batfamily Birthdays

Here are all the birthdates I know of that are canon somewhere in DC, with a preference for the main comics continuities. I have included exact sources and image references when possible. I am not including character introduction dates, just actual birthdays.

If you find any other sources for Batfamily birthdays, please do share!

A moment of silence for Batfamily characters who don’t have canonical birthdays yet, so far as I know. This includes Damian Wayne, Stephanie Brown, Duke Thomas, and more. :(

Summary

Source images will be further down, but here’s an overview in roughly age order (I’m not sure of Kate vs Selina’s ages) with the dates the birthdays were introduced and used:

Tim Drake: July 19th (from 2003)

Jason Todd: August 16th (from 2004)

Cassandra Cain: January 26th (from 2002)

Helena Bertinelli: February 14th (in the Batman: The Brave and the Bold universe, from 2010)

Helena Wayne: September 7th (from 1984), potentially October 20th or the 22nd of unknown month or maybe October 22 or maybe Feb 28th (all the New 52 on passports from 2011-2012). These could also be New 52 Helena Bertinelli’s birthdays or nobody’s birthdays. who even knows.

Alfred Pennyworth: April 8th (from 1976), August 16th (in the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe, from 2016)

Note: in this post when I say “main comics continuity(s)/universe” I’m referring to anything that’s been a “home” continuity for the comics at some point. For example, pre-Crisis Earth-2, Earth-1/New Earth, and Earth-0/Prime Earth, as opposed to Elseworlds or DCEU earths that are still part of the broader DC multiverse but have never been the primary continuity of the comics.

Tim Drake

Tim has only been given one canon birthday. He turned 16 on July 19th in Robin Vol. 2 #116 (cover date Sep 2003).

Jason Todd

Jason turned 18 on August 16th in Detective Comics #790 (March 2004). This is his only canon birthday.

In post-Crisis/preboot (1986-2011) continuity, there was a gap of six months between when Jason died and when he was resurrected (Batman Annual 25). Jason died April 27th according to his death certificates in Batman Annual 25 and Batman Files 2011, so he would’ve resurrected near late October.

So, it could be that post-resurrection Jason is biologically 6 months younger than he chronologically should be. But honestly, do we even really know what multiverse-breaking resurrection punches and then a Lazarus Pit on top of that do to someone’s body??? Either way it’s just much more simple to just use his chronological age.

Cassandra Cain

Much like Tim and Jason, Cass has only ever been given one birthdate: January 26th from Batgirl Vol. 1 #33. With that birthday, she turned 18 in Batgirl Vol. 1 #37.

When Jan 26th actually comes, Bruce suggests David Cain could’ve lied about it, but Cass denies that idea and continues to treat the day as her birthday.

Why it's likely her real birthday: Bruce initially believes Cain must’ve lied because he doesn’t think Cain could’ve known her birthday. However, we later learn Cain had lied about her origins and was actually her biological father. Batgirl v1 #62 and #73 show he was there for her birth and could absolutely know the date.

On top of that, in Batgirl #37 Cass remembers celebrating her birthday with him as a child, so he did seem to actually keep track of it. I honestly don’t see any reason to believe he’d lie (Bruce is just a jealous spoilsport).

Helena Bertinelli + Wayne

I’m combining them here because the New 52 gives me a headache.

Helena Bertinelli celebrated her birthday on February 14th in a spin-off comic from the animated Batman: The Brave and the Bold series. This is obviously not part of regular comics continuity and the characters differ from the usual comics in many ways. And yet, for reasons that will soon be clear, it’s my favorite for actually being about Helena Bertinelli the Huntress and for not being an utter mess.

In a character profile at the end of Infinity Inc. #7 (Oct 1984), Helena Wayne’s birthday was September 7th, 1959. Calculating back from October 1984, that would make her 25 at the time.

During the New 52, Helena Bertinelli was initially portrayed as a long-dead (secretly alive but don’t worry about it) mobster’s daughter and replaced by Earth-2’s Helena Wayne who got stranded on Prime Earth. This H. Wayne stole H. Bertinelli’s identity in the form of several forged passports and IDs, which had hints toward birthdates. The question is, can we take any of those birthdates seriously, and if so, which birthdates and for which character? (Cue my headache.)

Skip ahead to Dick if overthinking fake passports sounds boring.

When comparing to a real Italian passport, the date on H. Wayne’s fake Italian passport appears to be a birthdate. Note that the fake name is Carol Bertinelli, not Helena. H. Wayne said her IDs were inspired by H. Bertinelli but clearly she’s taking liberties for the IDs so that’s a point toward these being useless for H. Bertinelli birthdays.

Huntress Vol. 3 #1 (Dec 2011)

I don’t recognize the month abbreviation as a real abbreviation, but from the visible letter O I’m going to assume it means October. If it is, then the date is 20 October 1985. Sidenote: a 1985 birthdate during 2011 could put her age at about 26, which is actually quite close to how old she could’ve been based on pre-Flashpoint! 1985 has been given as Helena Wayne’s death year before, so it’s an interesting choice of a birth year for her. (Thanks to DC’s sliding timescale, though, birth years don’t actually mean anything in the comics.)

They don’t show her complete US passport, but I can see a “22” in line where the day of the month should be for her birthdate. This already contradicts the previous passport. This one uses Helena Bertinelli’s actual name, though–does that make it more relevant than the Carol one or this all still ridiculous because of the discrepancies?

Worlds’ Finest Vol. 1 #1 (Jul 2012)

We can try to glean the US passport birth month from the passport number at the bottom. The first two digits (“12” here) indicate the agency that issued the passport. 12 means the Honolulu agency. Right after “USA” is supposed to be the birthdate plus an extra number, in the order of year/month/day with the year being the last two digits of a year. Here we encounter another problem. It says 810228. This would imply her birthdate is 1981/02/28. That’s February 28, 1981. Since the earlier line indicated her birthday fell on a 22nd, this already contradicts itself.

However, I’d bet comic writers and artists aren’t always well versed in passport numbers (it’s already a stretch for me to bother checking it…). If they put the extra digit before the birthdate instead after, and the date is formatted month/day/year (the most common format in American English, so probably their first instinct), then we can drop the first 8 and it’s 10/22/8[?] with the last digit unknown. This would put her birthday as October 22, sometime in the 1980s. The 22 matches the earlier line, the October might match the previous passport if that really did say October (but contradicts the 20th), and the 1980s year could be 1985 to match the Italian passport.

At the end of the day I’m personally just going to let Helena Bertinelli be a Valentine’s born baby and call it a day, unless/until she gets a better one in the comics. For Helena Wayne I’d easily pick September 7th.

(My question is: did they give the crossbow vigilante a Valentine’s birthday as a Cupid joke??)

Dick Grayson

Dick has probably had the most birthdays of everyone (unless Bruce has more I don’t know about). All of them have their drawbacks.

In a main comics continuity, his most popular and most recent is “the first day of spring” so probably March 20th. This comes from Robin Annual 4 when his mom says she calls him Robin because he was born on the first day of spring. That presents some problems since there are other explanations given for the origin of “Robin,” including that his mom said he was “always bobbin’ along” (Dark Victory #12, page 17) or the original inspiration of Robin Hood (Detective Comics #38, p3).

Before that, in Secret Origins Vol. 2 #50 (Aug 1990), Marv Wolfman wrote a version of Dick’s origins where Dick turned 10 a week before his parents died on Halloween. That would make his birthday October ~24th (presuming that “a week” before Halloween literally means 7 days here).

The first drawback of the October birthday is that it’s tied to Dick being 10 when his parents die on Halloween. Dick’s age and the date his parents die change a lot depending on the writer (Nightwing Vol. 1 #1 says his parents died June 27th, Dark Victory #8-9 says May, etc.). The second drawback is that few people remember this version of his birthday even exists.

Dick’s birthday is November 11th in Super DC Calendar 1976. Note: Despite being a non-diegetic calendar from almost 50 years ago, this source remains well known and used among comic enthusiasts (including those working at DC). Generally, I would say it should mainly apply just to pre-Crisis continuity, but it is also useful for characters that haven’t gotten updated birthdays ever since (like Roy Harper, Barbara Gordon, or Selina Kyle, for example).

Sidenote: Since Damian doesn’t have a canon birthday, November 11th is favorite to steal for my own fan canon Damian birthday. Dick has plenty birthdays to share and I think it’s cute. @ DC, give Damian and Steph birthdays, they’ve been birthday-less for decades!

Indeed, DC writer Tim Sheridan and editor Mike Cotton debated whether Dick’s birthday was in March or November. They favored March 20th and wrote a birthday scene in Teen Titans Academy #1 (published March 23rd, 2021). The publishing time near Dick’s birthday was intentional, though the date isn’t mentioned within the comic itself.

The above birthdays were all meant to apply to a main comics continuity at some point. However, Earth-16, better known as the animated Young Justice universe (therefore outside of main comics continuity), says YJ Dick’s birthday is December 1st.

Unlike Helena Bertinelli, Dick has plenty of comics birthdays to choose from, so personally I’ll only count Dec 1st as being the birthday for YJ animated/Earth-16 Dick Grayson until or unless it’s ever mentioned to apply to main comics continuity.

Barbara Gordon

Super DC Calendar 1976 says Barbara’s birthday is September 23rd.

Since then, the only time I recall her birthdate hinted at is in Secret Origins #20 when her adoptive mom says her birthday is in the fall. This could support her birthday being September 23rd.

Although she has celebrated her birthday on panel since then (the end of Nightwing Vol. 2 #153), she hasn’t been given any other actual birthdate. So I’ll keep September 23rd and call it a day.

Selina Kyle

Super DC Calendar 1976 says Selina’s birthday is March 14th. Once again, although it hasn’t been mentioned within a comic, it’s stuck around in popular consciousness (see: Catwoman actress Zoë Kravitz wishing Selina a happy birthday on March 14th).

Selina celebrated a birthday on panel in Catwoman (2002) #37 but the date was never mentioned. I don’t know of any other reference to her birthday, but my reading of Selina is thus far more sparse than my reading of the others.

Kate Kane

Kate’s birthday options all come from outside of the comics themselves.

In “An Un-Birthday Present,” season 1 episode 11 of Batwoman, a parallel version of her twin Beth had a driver’s license showing her date of birth as January 26, 1990. She and Kate later celebrated their birthdays on an episode aired Jan 26th, 2020. I don’t keep up with live action DC shows so I unfortunately can’t offer a screenshot (if anyone has one or the timestamp, please let me know!).

(I kinda wonder if somebody looked up Batwoman’s birthday for these episodes, saw Batgirl’s (Cass’s) birthday, and just ran with it. Batwoman and a Batgirl sharing a birthday is just. Ughhh.)

In 2012, one of her comic writers tweeted to choose a random date for her birthday and picked March 21st, which so far as I know has never been used as her birthday in comics.

Bruce Wayne

Bruce’s most popular birthday is February 19th, but his most recent one is October 7th from the digital-only comic Legends of the Dark Knight. I believe that’s the only time October 7th has been referenced, but I’ve heard the animated show The Batman said his birthday was in October (can’t confirm, haven’t watched it recently).

Still, even associates of DC seem to remember his February 19th birthday better. In February 2023, Warner Bro’s Gotham Knights game did a sale for Bruce’s birthday. I’ve also heard the birthday was used in the Gotham TV show, but again, I don’t watch much live action DC shows.

The February 19th birthday appears to come from the 70s and 80s. It’s his birthday in the Super DC Calendar 1976, and in Batman Family Vol. 1 #11: “Suprise, Suprise!” (May 1977). Bob Rozakis (known as DC’s “Answer Man”) said Feb 19th was Bruce’s birthday in the letter column of Detective Comics #494 (Sep 1980).

Way back in the 40s, his birthday was in April, possibly April 7th. During a birthstone murder mystery, Bruce says his birthstone is a diamond, which is traditionally the April birthstone.

World’s Finest Comics #33/6 (Mar-Apr 1948): “The 5 Jewels of Doom!”

Star Spangled Comics #91 (Apr 1949) might imply the exact date was April 7th but we’d have to assume the party is on his birthday and that “this month” refers to the publishing month of April. I believe this is where people get the April 7th birthday when they bring it up.

Early April also shines in Batman: Year One where it shows Bruce’s first night out as Batman being either the night of April 6th or the early morning of April 7th (Batman #405). So although the April Bruce birthday hasn’t been used in decades, it’s still a Batman birthday in a way.

I have also heard people say Frank Miller considered Bruce’s birthday to be in November. However, I have yet to find an original source of him saying that, and honestly (just like the “March 21st” birthday for Kate) if he never used it in any canon material I don’t put much weight in that.

Jim Gordon

The only birthday I’ve ever seen for Jim is January 5th from Super DC Calendar 1976.

Alfred’s birthday in Super DC Calendar 1976 is April 8th.

In the Injustice: Gods Among Us universe (an alternate reality where the video game of the same name is set in), they show Alfred’s birth certificate, where it says his birthday is August 16th, 1943.

Maybe you’ll notice that August 16th is Jason’s birthday. A little funny considering the issue features Alfred refusing to share his birthday only for us to learn it’s the same date as Jason’s. Still, annoying. There are so many days in the year! Stop choosing the same ones!

This Alfred birthdate runs into a similar problem Helena’s birthdates did: it’s not part of main comics canon, it’s an alternate universe, so it may not be applicable to the main comics universe.

Note: if we calculate that 1943 birth year from Jun 2016 when the comic was published, that’d make Alfred 72 soon to be 73. Does that mean anything in canon? Probably not, but oh well. Also...token British character born by Windsor Castle? …of course.

Personally, I would rather go with the April 8th birthday than the Injustice one, since Injustice is an alternate universe. Also, outside of the humor of it, the idea of Alfred and Jason sharing a birthday is a bit too much for me. Still, it’s up to people’s own cherry picking.

Chronology

The birthdays in publishing order alongside notable reboots. A soft-reboot refers to reboots that only changed a few details with minor consequences, keeping the overall continuity mostly intact. A major reboot has significant effects on continuity (too many to list).

1935-1986: Pre-Crisis era (Golden Age begins ~1946, Silver Age runs from late 50s--early 70s)

Here's my 2023 Art Year in Review!

Oof. Yeah, not a great year for output. As you can tell by my having to put in some photos I took for May and October, since I didn't have any drawn art for those months. What I used for January and Sept. is definitely fudging things (in a "hmm close enough" way.)

So, here's the damage: 15 pieces total (all but one full background and color); 54 individuals.

BUT.

I'm not going to be super hard on myself, because this year is when I organized a big fan project that I'd been wanting to see get done for years and years -- the "Trouble" multi-artist lyric comic. (Art here, video version here by the amazing @stariousfalls.) As I've said before, absolutely awesome seeing 72 people step up wanting to do a big GF fan project in 2024! I was truly blown away by what a spectacular job everyone did.

And while I'm noting some of the stuff I can feel good about, I was happy to finish the Stan Twins meet the Jersey Devil comic that I'd also been meaning to finish for years.

So, not a great year personally, but some things to feel satisfied about.

Saying it here: my new year's resolution is just to DRAW SOMETHING in every month. Even just one thing!

Ok I'm sorry but this is gonna be a long rant.

I am an ex swiftie (also a minor) and I joined the fandom back in 2022 after midnights released. Before that I had heard a few songs but I barely knew anything about Taylor before 2020 and I did not know about the Kimye stuff or anything.

When the bejeweled music video was released I did not realize the easter eggs so thus I thought that I need to become parasocial and I NEED to know everything that taylor has done every minute of the day (referencing Do you really wanna know where I was April 29?)

I went deeper into the hole. I started getting obsessed with Taylor. I clicked on every video , post and podcast mentioning her. I genuinely became a parasocial fan. I only heard her songs and barely cared about other artists. I hated on her exes (Jake Gyllenhaal and John Mayer especially) because I believed that they had hurt Taylor to no extent. I still don't like them/am neutral but I don't hate them anymore. In march I joined tumblr because I heard Taylor was on here and I have no other social media to support her from so I came here to give her my support.

In April , the breakup happened. I was genuinely devastated. Joe was and is an amazing person. I was shocked to see her move on so quickly and date m*tty he*ly . I was even as a child shocked as to how someone can move on so fast. But also move on to someone so problematic after calling herself an activist? Idk what was wrong with her. But IG as long as she is happy.

She broke up with him. We all rejoiced. Speak now TV was also announced! Yay!

I remember so well on 7th July I was in school and I was so fucking excited about it coming so soon I couldn't sit still. I was counting down minutes until it's release even tho I did not have any devices to listen to it on. My friends were so happy to see me happy and excited af.

I went home and heard speak now tv. Amazing experience for me at that time.

I became the person who said shit like : I hate everyone but Taylor and Taylor is a gift to this Earth and etc etc.

But the amount of joe hate and joeover and joebless jokes annoyed me. Why were we hating a person who was in her life at her worst moments? Taylor would never condone or allow this.

But boy was I wrong.

Most of the hate against joe was my #Strike 1 for leaving the fandom.

Then came along Traylor. I was like oh ok as long as she is happy :))

Then she started associating with the nfl people. Br*ttany M*homes and Abuser bitch.

When I heard of this I was like wtf Taylor???

Weren't you the one who was going off about being on the right side of the history and believing victims?

I was like it's fine maybe she doesn't know or maybe she will stop once she knows.

She didn't

Then she won person of the year. I was already very unhappy with Taylor at that time. But I still was like Yay! Congrats! But maybe you shouldn't be the one to win it?

Then the doxxing by a swiftie happened. It was #strike 3

I left the fandom. I still had hope she would change.

Now after seeing her jets emissions (I'm a huge Environmentalist and a feminist so this shit bothered the living helm out of me) and her continuously hanging out with brittany piece of shit and all the joe hate going on, I am beginning to despise her.

I had initally blocked hate pages like yours but Now I open your posts everyday and check them because I relate to them sm.

I went from a person defending every action of Taylor's, being the only one in my entire theatre who knew the lyrics to all the songs of the eras tour movie , having Taylor as my top artist of the year with more than 60 percent of the songs being hers to despising her so much for being fake and stuck up.

I remember after I left the fandom and not many people knew about it , A classmate said something against Taylor and her songs directly to me daring me to oppose it and I genuinely wanted to cry because I thought that I would now always be associated with this fandom.

The ex swiftie in me genuinely wants 2016 to happen again so Taylor will be removed from the pedestal she is put on by so many. She needs to be saved from herself and her parasocial fans.

And I used to say I would love Taylor forever but I suppose forever really is the sweetest con.

TLDR :- I USED TO BE A PARASOCIAL SWIFTIE WHO USED TO LIVE AND BREATHE TAYLOR BUT NOW I'M SLOWLY STARTING TO DESPISE HER.

Okay... I'm definitely not ready to say anything about this elsewhere so what u read here stays here PLEEEAAAAASE 🙏😭 I'll split it into sections so its easier to digest LOL

Okay, I finally admit it aloud:

Reading orion's reply to this post about me having "I turned my hobby into a task"-itis really struck me. I've felt it to be true for about a year now but kept it inside...

When writing my super doc in April, I thought "I can't wait until I never think about Daybreak Town again." And the idea of me restarting all over with KHML if it gets overly-complicated too... ugh

So I think in a year at the earliest, I'm going to try leaving the KH community. I will keep this beloved blog and still play future KH titles, but I want to focus on my real life. I want a career, but I'm 26 and have made no strides towards it at all. I want my driver's license and an onsite job! I don't want my life to revolve around sitting at my computer anymore.

what this means for my projects:

But I can't stop now since I'd let down people I made promises to. I said I would release all of X-position as videos, and I literally just started a new podcast with my friend Hannah like 2 weeks ago... Both projects I said yes to while still thinking about how burnt out on KH I am... What is wrong with me!

the podcast: I double-checked to see that Hannah doesn't follow me here because I really I don't want to hurt her, I love her and don't want to let her down. I want the podcast to continue at least a year before breaking this to her. I counted our topics up to DDD, and that already gives us 50+ topics, plenty for a weekly release. Plus, I do like the idea of helping new KH fans learn without being spoiled, it's why I said yes to begin with!

as for my youtube channel, I'll make an announcement after X-Position is entirely out. I will give my Patreon a heads up beforehand, so they can decide to keep supporting until the end or not, but I will close it entirely when the channel ends. I planned other videos outside of KHUX, but they'll have to be good-ol'-fashion text analyses here.

And as for my webcomic, this hurts too because I LOVED writing it! I want to finish the 7th chapter I started long ago, then release the entire story as text, and then finally release a certain chapter that I was really looking forward to illustrating.

It sucks too because my IRL friends are new KH fans, so they're all learning things I've known for years, making jokes I've heard for years. They think I'm still in it for the long haul, one of them just bought all of us matching seasalt icecream charms 😭 How do I break it to them that I want to move on from KH. I feel like a movie where a washed up gunman wants to retire LOL

I have journaled (and sometimes cried lol) about this almost daily for the past 2 weeks, but that comment orion made (with multiple seconding replies!) made me go ".... ok yeah I have to talk about this." It just feels SO cathartic seeing people say aloud what I have been feeling. It gives me the courage to continue until the end and not like... fake my death online LOL AAAAAA—

if this was 2019 I would have thought "yeah I'll just stop, people won't mind that much" because my philosophy was what I did online wasn't THAT important to people (tone I truly say this with: at peace, content, meditative). But ever since 2020, it feels like the internet is so important to people's values and focus, it's scarier to leave things!

I promised I'll be making intros to my DRs, so let's start off with my Main DR ! I have not shifted to this DR yet, but it's the one I try to shift to almost every night and it's one of the two DRs that stay consistent in my scripts !

I begin training under SM Ent. There aren't many trainees my age, so I befriend older trainees, which are Sehun (EXO), Johnny (NCT), Irene (Red Velvet). Soon after I begin training, my family informs me that they will be moving back to Bulgaria, where my older brother can receive better higher education there, so I am left alone in Seoul. They tell me to come with them, but becoming an Idol is my dream, so I refuse, to which they get furious, and tell me never to contact them ever again.

2011-2012

I become great friends with Yeri (Red Velvet) and we train together, aligned for the same group. We are roommates, so we become good friends the moment she becomes a trainee. I've gone no contact with my family, aside from my aunt, uncle and cousin. I also befriend Mark (NCT), but we get close due to me not being able to speak good Korean and communicating in English instead (same situation with Johnny). True love is a powerful thing and you learned that in your 7th year at Hogwarts.

You had joined Dumbledore’s army a couple of weeks ago and it was a breath of fresh air, you know, ever since Umbridge stopped you guys from using wands in her class. You could take out your wand and cast a million spells in the room of requirement without getting punished for “going against the Ministry”.

You rushed to the room of requirement after dark with a few others, making sure not to be caught. You guys walked inside and started your lesson right away.

“Alright everyone, today, we are going to keep practicing the Patronus charm,” Harry announced, “now everyone, say it with me just so we know we’re doing it right: Expecto Patronum,”. “Expecto Patronum,” you all repeated.

“Good, good! Now watch me do it once more as a demonstration,” Harry said, “Expecto Patronum!”. Out of the end of his wand burst, a blinding, dazzling, silver stag. “Woah,” you gasped as you watched it run around, even though you’ve seen it so many times it still amazes you. It soon disappeared and everyone started nodding their heads, saying that they were ready to practice.

“Alright, practice,” Harry said and motioned for you all to get started. You walked to a spot toward the corner of the room and started practicing. “Expecto Patronum,” you said quietly, rehearsing the words before doing it full-out. You then waved your wand around a few times and readied yourself. The room was filled with everyone either screaming the charm at their wand or having only a little bit of silver mist.

“Expecto Patronum!” you chanted, only to have a little bit of silver mist come out. You huffed and tried again, “Expecto Patronum!”. It still did the same though. “You’re doing good Y/n, just keep trying,” Harry told you. You nodded your head and tried once more.

You thought of when you and your sister were playing in a field, you didn’t have a care in the world, it was just you and your sister. You were playing animals and you were a horse while she was a bunny. “Hop. Hop,” she said and hopped through the grass. “Neigh!” you giggled and trotted after her. You smiled at the memory and readied yourself again.

“Expecto Patronum!” you chanted, rather loudly. Soon a silver mist appeared and then a hedgehog started scurrying in the air. You chuckled a bit and followed it as it made its way around you. “That’s great Y/n!” Harry cheered from across the room and then went back to helping Cho. You smiled and then felt a presence behind you.

You turned around to see Fred standing there. “Good job,” he complimented and pointed to your Patronus. It immediately went away because you need to stay focused on your Patronus to keep working, and you could not. “Thanks,” you thanked him and looked up at him.

He was very handsome, very handsome indeed. But you two were only acquaintances. You guys hadn’t even spoken before this army was formed and the only reason why you’ve ever talked was that you got paired up for dueling while learning Stupefy and Expelliarmus charms.

“What did you think of as your memory?” Fred asked, “Oh, um, me and my sister playing in a field together,” you told him. “That seems fun,” he chuckled, “Yeah,” you laughed awkwardly. You were never good at keeping up a conversation, especially with a cute boy.

“Alright! That’s it for our lesson today!” Harry announced, “Make sure to not get caught by Filch or Umbridge!”. “Okay, well uh, see you tomorrow,” Fred said and walked away, joining George and the others. “See you,” you sighed.

Over the next few weeks, your liking for Fred only grew stronger. His funny ways and charming smiles just made you swoon over him. When you were around him all you wanted to do was hug him, kiss him, just be with him. You were walking down the hallway when you saw Fred secretly giving kids treats from their Skiving Snackboxes while Umbridge was standing on the stairs.

You just kept walking trying not to look at Fred to draw any attention towards him because if she saw you looking she would get him in trouble and would probably bring you in for questioning. “Hey, Y/n!” you heard from behind you. You turned around and saw Fred running toward you. “H-Hey Fred,” you smiled and kept walking.

“How are you today?” he asked, “Good,” you said quickly, trying to end the conversation for the time being so that you could get past Umbridge. “So I was wondering about today’s lesson if we do anything with dueling would you want to-?”, “Fred, shush!” you scolded. “What? Why?” he asked.

You nodded your head over to Umbridge. You both looked at her, accidentally making eye contact with her. “Shit,” you both mumbled and looked away rather quickly. “Misses Y/l/n, Mr. Weasley, may I ask what you two are doing?” Umbridge called. You both stopped and turned around. “Uh, walking?” Fred answered, making you giggle slightly.

“Mr. Weasley, how about you come to my office,” she told him, “Why?” he asked. “For questioning,”. Fred rolled his eyes and looked at you, you just gave him a small sympathetic smile and watched as he walked with her.

It’s now a week later and you and Fred really haven’t talked since he had to go to Umbridge’s for questioning. That was until Fred had landed himself detention. “Mr. Weasley, my office,” Umbridge told him. Fred hesitantly got up out of his desk and followed her.

The next time you saw him was in the halls, his hand freshly carved into and a cold, emotionless look on his face. “Hey Fred,” you tried greeting him, but he just kept walking. “Um, how did it go?” you asked, “How do you think,” Fred snapped and looked toward you.

You were taken aback a bit. You’ve never seen him mad at anyone, ever. “Oh, um, s-sorry,” you apologized, not knowing what to do. “No, I’m sorry,” Fred sighed and walked over to a bench, you following behind, “I just, I just hate that lady. She takes the fun out of everything and is so… cruel. This place used to be magical, but now it’s not,”.

Your heart kind of ached when he said that because it was true. It’s not magical like it used to be. “I know, but there’s nothing we can do about it. We just need to focus on things a little more… positive,” you smiled and leaned in a little. “This is my chance,” you thought.

You slowly leaned in and kissed him, but he pulled back almost immediately. Your eyes widened and you stood up, backing away slowly. “I-I’m sorry,” you apologized, drowning in embarrassment and heartbreak. “Wait, Y/n,” Fred said but you couldn’t face him right now. It was obvious that he didn’t like you back. “I-I-I c-can’t I’m sorry,” you choked out, tears streaming down your face. You turned around quickly and ran to your dorm, sobbing.

The next few weeks were awful. You had to be around him almost all of the time, and before, you found it a blessing, but now, it was a curse. Your heart ached every time you looked at him. You had driven yourself insane over the fact that you couldn’t have him.

You laid awake at night crying and thinking about him. You dreamed about being together, only to be woken up to a heartbreaking reality. He was perfect to you and you couldn’t convince yourself otherwise, no matter how many times you tried.

“Y/n, you need to get over him. He’s stupid to not like you back,” Hermione tried convincing you. You were sitting outside near a tree, crying once more. “I know, I just- you don’t understand! He’s the thing that I want most, and I. Can’t. Have. Him. I’m- I’m-”, “You’re what?” she asked.

“I’m… in love with him. I love him with everything I’ve got. It’s almost painful how much,” you told her. You were in love with him and there was no stopping it.

“Oh Y/n,” she cooed and hugged you which led you to cry more. She then looked down at her watch and sighed, looking up and giving you a look of sympathy. “We’ve got to go to our lesson,” she told you and stood up. “I don’t want to go, he’ll be there,” you pouted. “The only way that you’ll ever get over him is if you face him,” Hermione said firmly and pulled you off the ground. “You’re a great friend Hermione, you know that right?” you told her, she nodded her head and hugged you.

“Are you sure that you know how good of a friend you are?” you asked her. “Yes, I’m sure, why?” she questioned. You couldn’t tell her what you were planning to do tonight, but, you could remind her that it’s not her fault. “Nothing, just know that you’re the best friend a girl could ask for,” you told her and hugged her once more.

She just gave you an unassured, weird, hug back before you composed yourself and quickly headed to lessons, making sure not to get caught. You both walked in and all eyes were on you. You quickly looked down before you both walked up to the group.

Soon lessons started and you were, once again, practicing Patronus charms because a couple of kids still couldn’t get it, which was understandable because it is very hard to produce.

“Make it a powerful memory, the happiest you can remember. Allow it to fill you up,” Harry announced, walking around the room, “Keep trying Seamus,” he said and then walked over near you. “Fred, your turn now,” Harry told him. You looked over and saw Fred focusing while George watched his twin. Your heart ached once more, almost bringing you to tears.

“Expecto Patronum!” Fred chanted and a silver Magpie started flying around. You watched in amazement as Fred was finally able to produce one. Fred looked up in amazement as well, before catching sight of you. You made eye contact with him before quickly looking away.

“Just remember, your Patronus can only protect you for as long as you stay focused,” Harry told everyone. “Alright Y/n, focus,” you whispered to yourself and thought of you and your sister playing in the field once more. “Expecto Patronum!” you chanted, but only a small silver mist came out. “Huh? That worked before, why isn’t it working now?”. You tried once more, but still nothing. You huffed out and went to try again.

“Are you thinking of the happiest memory you could think of?” you heard someone say from behind you. You turned your head to see Fred standing there with a smirk. He was acting like nothing ever happened. “Yes, I am,” you spat and turned back around. “Well then, think of a happier one,” Fred said like you were dumb.

You just rolled your eyes and looked back. Once you had felt that he had walked away, you closed your eyes, trying to think of what your happiest memory really is. You thought of you and your sister in the field, but that didn’t make your heart happy like it used to. You thought of getting outstanding on a potions quiz that you studied really hard for, still not happy enough. You then thought of when you and Fred were in class together, laughing up a storm. You were admiring his features and every little thing about him.

Your heart filled up with happiness at the memory, making you step back a little and hold your heart, for it had hurt a little. Your lip started to quiver as you came to the realization that Fred was your happiest memory, but also the person that made your heart ache.

You composed yourself for the second time today and readied yourself. “Expecto Patronum!” you chanted. An animal emerged from your wand, but it wasn’t a hedgehog.

It was a Magpie.

You got really confused and then heard people gasp. You looked over at everyone. “Why did my Patronus change?” you asked. Hermione stepped forward a little, “Your Patronus can change due to either bereavement, profound shifts in a person’s character or-” Hermione stopped. Everyone was quiet and watching this all unfold. “Or what?” you asked, kind of scared. “…falling in love,”.

Your heart dropped at her statement. “F-Falling in love?” you shook and looked over to Fred. He was just as in shock as you were. “Falling in love,” Hermione assured. You knew you were in deep trouble now and so did Hermione. She ran over to you as you dropped to the floor, sobbing.

“What’s going on?” asked Fred. “Can’t you see?!” you yelled, “I’m in love with you and you don’t love me back! I’m screwed!”. You sobbed even harder as Hermione hugged you tighter. “Oh my gosh,” everyone gasped. “Y-You’re in love with me?” Fred asked. You just nodded your head and slightly opened your eyes. Fred had a small smile on his face.

“What are you smiling about?” Hermione snapped. “The fact that I-” Fred didn’t finish his sentence. He pulled you out of Hermione’s arms and kissed you. You were shocked at first but started kissing back too. A few seconds later, you both pulled back and looked into each other’s eyes.

“But the last time you pulled away, I-”, “When you kissed me, you put your hand on my hand and it hurt, like, bad. So, I pulled away. I really did want to kiss you back, it just hurt too much but when I tried to talk to you you ran away crying, it broke my heart, to be honest,” Fred chuckled and hugged you tighter when he saw your tears coming back from his statement.

“I’m sor-sorry,” you choked out, “Hey, hey, hey, shhh,” he soothed you until you stopped crying, “you have nothing to be sorry about”. You two looked in each other’s eyes and started to lean in. But right before you could kiss the lights went dark and the room started to shake.

You and Fred both broke from each other’s gaze and looked around at everyone. You all were looking around frantically, all of you scared and confused. Within seconds the glass on the wall where the door to the room of requirement was shattered, throwing glass in every direction. Everyone ducked and Fred covered your body from getting cut by towering over you.

After the glass had all fallen, you and Fred both stood up, watching Colin walk up to a small hole in the wall. He looked through and his eyes widened. You only heard a lady’s voice say, “I’ll make short work of this” and then a small pause “Bombarda Maxima,”.

The wall blew out and everyone inside the room walked to the now bigger hole in the wall. There stood Umbridge, some Slytherins, and Mr. Filch. Draco then pulled Cho into view and you felt your heart sting. She and you were good friends. “How could she do this?” you thought.

“Get them,” Umbridge spat, making your eyes go wide. Everyone in the room started to scramble in different directions, gradually getting caught by the Slytherins. Cho just stood there, not helping one bit.

You then saw Goyle in front of you, ready to grab you but a tall body quickly stood in front of you. You looked up to see Fred, “Don’t even think about it, Goyle,” he spat and pushed you farther behind him.

Someone then grabbed you from behind, yanking you from him. “Fred!” you yelped and turned your head to see Mr. Filch. You tried to get out of his grasp and Fred, who has noticed your absence from behind him, was trying to free you as well.

“Let go of her!” Fred yelled before Goyle yanked him back. Although Fred had tried to get loose, it was no hope, Goyle wasn’t letting go. After a few seconds of everyone resisting and trying to get out of the grip of Umbridge’s posse, you all were caught and Umbridge had one of the most terrifying smiles you have ever seen on her face.

She looked like a full-blown psychopath. “Detention,” she said quietly, “all of you!”. You flinched at her scream and looked at Fred with fear in your eyes. “It’ll be fine,” he whispered to you before you were yanked by Mr. Filch. He had a rather firm grip on your arm, hurting you a lot.

“Stop Mr. Filch!” Hermione, who was being held by another one of the Slytherins, yelled, “You’re hurting her!”. Mr. Filch just growled and made his grip tighter. You looked at Fred and Hermione with tears in your eyes and then looked down at the ground.

You were all basically thrown in your chairs once you got to detention. “You will be doing lines for 4 hours!” Umbridge screamed. “But it’s nearly quarter till midnight!” Hermione exclaimed. “SILENCE!” Umbridge screamed, “LINES UNTIL BREAKFAST, TOMORROW MORNING!”. You looked at her with a shocked expression, everyone else doing the same. 9 hours of cruel punishment.

You started to silently cry when you realized how bad your punishment was and how much trouble you were in. Umbridge then composed herself a little and put back on a smile, “‘I must not break rules’ is what you all will be writing,”.

Everyone started writing their lines and groans were heard across the whole room. You watched as the words were being carved into your hands, “Why did I ever agree to do this?” you whispered to yourself and kept writing. You kept your head down nearly the whole time, trying to hide the fact that you were crying from Umbridge.

About 4 hours in, your hand was nearly numb and you were exhausted. Every time your eyes fluttered closed for some shut-eye Umbridge would tap your desk with her wand, waking you up.

Another hour passed and you felt hopeless. You were exhausted mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Your eyes started fluttering shut once again and yet another tap was made on your desk. You groaned and looked up, finally for the first time in 5 hours. You looked around and everyone looked disheveled.

Ron’s eyes were blood-shot, Hermione’s hair was a mess, George looked like he was about to kill somebody with the way his eyes were drooping, and Fred, well, Fred still looked perfect to you. It broke your heart to see him wince when he wrote another line.

Your lip started to quiver again and that’s when Fred just so happened to look back at you. His heart shattered at the sight of you. Your face was stained with tears, lips swollen, hair a mess, dark circles were under your eyes. You looked so… broken.

Fred looked up at Umbridge who was near you and gave her a death glare. But, he couldn’t do anything. She would give everyone a worse punishment if he were to do anything and he couldn’t do that to everyone, his brother, you.

Finally, after 9 hours of torture, it was over. “I assume you’ve all learned your lesson?” Umbridge said. Some nodded their heads and some looked so dead that they didn’t even give a response. She giggled, “Okay, now off to breakfast you go,”. You all stood up from your chairs and walked out of the room.

A few kids looked at you guys terrified, for you looked like monsters. Others snickered, especially Draco and his goons who had gotten a full night’s sleep and waited for you outside of the room.

“How was detention?” Draco asked you all. Everyone just gave him a glare and kept walking. Fred soon walked next to you and pulled you close to him. “Are you okay?” he whispered, sounding exhausted. “Yeah,” you simply said, not having enough energy to give a full response.

“Couldn’t protect your girlfriend last night, huh Weasley?!” Draco yelled over to you two. Fred stopped in his tracks and turned around. “Fred,” you whispered as you saw his fist clench. The sleep-deprivation must have caused him to have anger issues because he never acts like this. “Fred!” you exclaimed as he ran over to Draco and grabbed him by the collar.

“You shut up!” Fred screamed, “If you say another word about me or Y/n, you’ll regret it!”. Draco was shaking in fear and dropped to the ground when Fred let go. Fred just gave him one last glare before walking over to you, putting a hand on your waist, and pulling you away from the scene.

“Thank you, Fred,” you thanked him and snuggled into his side, “I’m sorry Y/n. I love you so much, just know that I will do anything in my power to make Umbridge pay for what she did to you. George and I will make it rain hell on her, I promise. I’m going to protect you with all I’ve got, I’ll be your human Patronus”.

You looked up at him and giggled slightly at his joke, “I love you too, my Patronus” you said and kissed his cheek.

“Anyone will do anything for true love, I suppose. They’ll let their heart be broken, they’ll risk themselves, but most of all, they’ll protect you with their life. Which is what your daddy promised himself that he’ll do for me for the rest of his life,” you told your children, who were sitting with you on the couch by the fire.

“Wow, you really must’ve loved daddy. You’re Patronus changed for him before you two even got together,” your oldest daughter, Elena, said. “Yep, I sure did,” you sighed and rubbed your two other children’s foreheads, “now come on Elena, Naomi and Minerva have fallen asleep,” you whispered to her and picked up the 5-year-old, Naomi, and 7-year-old, Minerva, while your 10-year-old followed behind.

The two of you walked to the two younger girls’ rooms and laid them down in bed. You then walked Elena to her room and tucked her in, kissing her goodnight.

You sighed and walked out of their rooms and to the kitchen. As you were cleaning up for the day, a voice boomed in your ear, startling you.

“Fred!” you yelped and hit his chest. “Hi love,” he whispered and kissed you, grabbing your wedding ring and fiddling with it. After you pulled away, you turned back around to keep cleaning up. “You should come and get some sleep, love,” Fred yawned and placed his head on your shoulder, hugging you from behind.

“I know, I know, just give me a few minutes,” you told him. “Love, come on, you’ve been up since dawn,” he told you and pulled you from the kitchen. “Fred, there are still dishes,” you whined, but Fred didn’t say anything. He laid you down on your shared bed and got in on the other side, pulling you into his embrace.

“I love you,” Fred whispered, “I just can’t see you tired anymore, not after all those years ago,”. “Fred, that was 13 years ago,” you giggled, “Umbridge can’t hurt me anymore,”. “I know, but still. I promised to protect you and that was the one time I didn’t. There was so much I could’ve done, but I didn’t and you got hurt and I just can’t forgive myself-” you cut him off with a kiss.

“You might not have protected me that time, but you protected me before that,” you told him and looked in his eyes. “What do you mean?” he asked, “Those were dark times and you, my love, brightened them. I felt so hopeless that year and you saved me from doing something horrible,”. “What did I save you from doing exactly?” Fred asked and pushed a piece of hair behind your ear.

“That day when my Patronus turned into yours, I was so heartbroken and sad that life didn’t have meaning anymore. I had planned that after lessons that day, I was going to pitch myself off of the astronomy tower and just end it all. But when you told me you loved me back, it all changed. I didn’t want to die anymore, my life had meaning and I wanted to live for the first time in months,” you whispered, tearing up at the end.

Fred pulled you tighter into his embrace and kissed your forehead. “I’m glad I saved you that day because I don’t know what I would’ve done with you gone,” Fred said. “You would’ve lived your life to become the handsome young chap that you are,” you giggled.

“No, Y/n, I probably wouldn’t have been able to live with myself. We wouldn’t have our little girls,” Fred was now tearing up too, “and I wouldn’t be married to the love of my life,”. You both looked in each other’s eyes and started sobbing.

“I promise to love you and the girls forever and ever and I will protect all of you with my life,” Fred told you. “And I promise to do the same,” you whispered. And with that, the two of you fell asleep in each other’s arms.

Falling in love can be painful sometimes, hell, it can be excruciatingly painful. But in the end, it’s always worth it because true love is one of the most powerful things in the world. It’s the true protection.

April 2024 Important Dates

AKA my notes on The Astrology Podcast's April forecast, hosted by Chris Brennan and Diana Rose Harper (Austin is away on paternity leave). This is one of the most astrologically active months in the year. In addition to planetary movements, there's a comet that will be visible soon in the night sky and a nova.

We're going into the month right off the tail of a Libra lunar eclipse on March 25th. We're in "eclipse season," the time between eclipses, with much activity to report. Starting off, Baltimore's Key Bridge collapsed after a container ship crashed into it, which Austin called last forecast when he said that Mars's entry into Pisces (approaching a conjunction to Saturn) would involve a sudden halt in maritime trade. Astrologically it's quite on the nose, with a Libra (associated with trade/commerce) moon conjunct the South Node (symbolizing lack and decrease). We even have a chart for the opening of this bridge: it was an exact Mars return for this bridge, as well as its Uranus opposition and nodal opposition. Also on the Libra eclipse was the UN Security Council's vote for a ceasefire in Gaza. The April 8th eclipse will show us whether this resolution is successful, and a final Libra eclipse in October will tie these events together.

In celebrity news, we had obviously doctored photos of Kate Middleton prompting increasingly wild speculation on what the British royal family was hiding, culminating in Kate announcing her cancer diagnosis & chemotherapy plans on the March 22nd Venus(women, exalted in Pisces = royalty)-Saturn (slow illnesses) conjunction. She was also born on a lunar eclipse & announced this right before one. Just 3 days after the eclipse, on March 28th, Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX was sentenced to 25 years in prison, the newest development in a story that began on an eclipse when BitCoin crashed and revealed his role in one of the biggest instances of financial fraud in US history.

In smaller news, a nova in the T Coronae Borealis system will be visible as a new star in the night sky this year. This nova is visible every 76 years or so (the last time was 1946), and has been observed as far back as the Middle Ages. Add this to the eclipses and the comet, and Chris hasn't seen such an astrological buildup since forecasting 2020. As the eclipse hit his 3rd house Donald Trump published a book combining the Bible and the US Constitution, while in other news an orca was stranded in British Columbia, another dolphin & orca-related development in the (Mars-)Saturn in Pisces in cycle and Arizona announced Pluto as their state planet.

April Overview: with significant activity in Pisces, Aries, and Taurus simultaneously, we'll be getting hard aspects to every modality (and trines to every element)--everyone will be getting hit with some kind of change (but will have opportunities for growth as well). Chris makes a distinction between the challenging first half of the month, and a second half which will see more clarity.

April 1st - Mercury stations retrograde By time of posting this retrograde is in full swing: disruptions in communication, plans, travel and technology. Diana describes this as especially frustrating in Aries, trying to go one way but some huge miscommunication gets in the way. We may have to walk back on words spoken in anger and renegotiate situations where we identified the wrong target as our enemy. With the eclipse's ruler Mars conjoining Saturn on the 10th, anyone who travels for the eclipse and hangs around for a few days may run into blockages, likely due to rain and floods. Other general Mercury retrograde significations: people come back into your life, unfinished projects become relevant again, and situations from the past resurface. For example, Sagittarius risings often see the "duderang" effect where male lovers come back into their lives, as Mercury rules their Gemini 7th house. Mercury rx also brings delays and slowdowns, and is generally a good time for introspection and "emotional alchemy."

April 3rd - Venus conjoins Neptune This occurs right as she leaves the sign of Pisces. Venus-Neptune keywords: dreamy, fantastical, imaginative (especially with art), compassionate, and opportunities to find new avenues of enjoyment and pleasure. Saturn's copresence in Pisces can bring us some grounding and reality. This can also bring unclear boundaries, uncertain relationships, and idealizing one's lover--like using the soft lens. In events, AI images and videos and toxic synthetic dyes also fall under Venus-Neptune. Is the siren's call too good to be true?

April 4th - Venus enters Aries Chris hopes that Venus's copresence to the eclipse will mitigate some of its effects, but on the flipside this means she's left Mars and Saturn alone with each other in the Pisces chart of our house.

April 8th - Total Solar Eclipse in Aries This eclipse will be visible over much of the (particularly eastern) continental US:

Diana calls it a chiron eclipse, so here's the chart with chiron:

The Moon will eclipse the Sun at 19 Aries, which is where Chiron will be as well. Mythologically, Hercules brings back the head (North Node, Aries) of the hydra to Chiron, whose poison causes him incredible pain because he is immortal and cannot die from it. He eventually trades his immortality for Prometheus and Zeus puts him in the heavens as a constellation. Narratively, eclipses invert what we expect: it becomes dark in the middle of the day! Prominent people fall suddenly from grace and new rulers skyrocket to power during eclipses. Because the eclipse occurs in the sign of the Sun's exaltation, leaders and heads of state/organization/etc will be especially affected. A similar Chiron-influenced Aries solar eclipse occurred in 1968 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. Nelson Mandela was sent to jail under an eclipse, but was also freed under another eclipse and elected to office under yet another eclipse.

For individuals, make note of what house this occurs in for you; this will be the end of one chapter and the opening of a new one in this area of life. Anything close to 19° of Aries will definitely feel it, as will any placements at that degree of Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn (hard aspects to the cardinal signs), while 19 Leo and Sagittarius (trine to fire signs) may feel some support. Generally, this series of events in Aries-Libra began a year ago, and will have its final eclipse on this axis in March of 2025.

This eclipse is ruled by a Mars (♓) who's just about conjunct with Saturn (♓), grinding things to a halt. Whatever's happening in the Aries and Pisces place is going to take some extra time. Other keywords: the end of a life cycle, matters of great importance & turning points in world history, major disasters as well as scientific discoveries. Eclipses highlight just how much is out of our control, like being on a teacup ride that's going too fast and being unable to stop unless something hits you. 6 months later, we'll get an eclipse that connects to some of these events:

Diana also points out that there will be an influx of tourists to rural areas of the US, advising travelers to stay courteous and noting that many local municipalities advise residents to stock up on basic supplies so they won't be lacking when a small area is flooded with new people & their needs. Generally, the eclipse will be a very creepy experience, with the Sun going completely dark, colors becoming muted, and stars may even be visible--some cultures have warnings against going outside during eclipses. Back to metaphors, Chris points out that the small seeds of much larger events are often planted during eclipses. Sometimes you don't know until later just how important this obscured implantation is because, like the Sun, our vision is occulted. Take notes, even of subtle things.

April 10th - Mars conjunct Saturn in Pisces We expect the two malefics to bring us challenges: their conjunctions in late Capricorn & early Aquarius heralded the first COVID lockdowns, and other hard aspects brought new variants and similar pandemic news. In 2022 a Mars-Saturn conjunction occurred with an epidemic of ebola. However, note that these are all airborne viruses, and these movements occurred with Saturn in the air sign of Aquarius. What will this look like in Pisces, a water sign? Chris predicts that existing Saturn-Pisces issues with water pollution and maritime trade/travel will have destructive moments as Mars comes in, while Diana thinks about water as a vector of disease, such as cholera & sewage treatment. Now that deep permafrost is melting due to climate change, we may also see new pathogens or substances released, as well as complications from farm water runoff. We'll definitely see the effects of this Baltimore bridge collapse, and, with the outbreak of dengue fever in Latin America, may see developments around diseases borne of insect bites. We may also hear about the ill effects of microplastics, lead, and asbestos as a result of this conjunction. More generally: pollution, ocean, liquids, extremes of hot and cold, feelings of constraint (and literal constraint), and spiritual or emotional burnout. Pisces is a sign of inescapable enmeshment with each other, so we'll likely deal with compassion fatigue and emotional isolation (especially involving social media). Questions of whether or not something is "real" remain relevant as ever.

On the positive side, Mars-Saturn brings discipline and self-control. Sometimes Mars and Saturn can temper each other to give us self-sustaining focus. We can combine hard-won wisdom with the drive we need to achieve it, like a martial arts training montage. Do we have the belief and conviction to achieve mastery? With determination we can reach heights we once only imagined. There's also stamina, resilience, and rigidity. Overlapping with the Mercury retrograde, we can also see delays and obstructions. If there are boundaries you've been meaning to enact, now is the time. We can see potential pitfalls, but beware of pessimism and not believing in yourself. Resentment and pent-up anger can also come into play as Mars's impulse butts up against Saturn's inaction, but incremental progress adds up.

April 11th - Sun conjunct retrograde Mercury (Cazimi) This marks a turning point in the retrograde. Diana uses a spelunking metaphor: during the retrograde we're diving into the cave, and at the cazimi we've found our treasure...but we still have to make our way back out. Our personal eclipse stories may become clearer during this time as well.

April 19th - Sun enters Taurus, Retrograde Mercury conjunct Venus Venus will help sweeten communications during the last week of Mercury's regression.

April 20th - Jupiter conjunct Uranus This brings freedom, liberation, and sudden rapid growth--completely different from the Mars-Saturn activity earlier this month. This may also set us up for the Jupiter-Mars conjunction later this summer. The Uranus in Taurus story has brought labor organizing and unions to prominence, so expect those stories to intensify during this conjunction. General keywords: technological breakthroughs and scientific discoveries, sudden revelations and growth, revolutions, rupture, and unexpected shifts. This conjunction takes place every 14 years, so Chris expects new discoveries, optimism and "quantum leaps" or new precedents in some fields. In Taurus this is related to food and agriculture--in addition to new technologies we'll likely see further developments with the farmer's protests in India and Europe. Finance and money is another Taurus signification, so disruptions in banks & questions about decentralizing currency may arise. Freedom, rebellion, and general eccentricity become important. We'll feel like anything is possible, but in disregarding the rules and refusing to compromise we may make rash decisions.

The comet Pons-Brooks may also start to become visible during this time. It comes by about every 80 years and is named for its 18th century discoverers. Ancient literature on comets is similar to that of eclipse: an ominous phenomenon heralding the deaths of rulers and falls of kingdoms. However, they note the color and appearance as indicating some positive effects when associated with Jupiter, and the planets whose path it crosses are relevant as well. Pons-Brooks passes closely by the Jupiter-Uranus conjunction, putting an exclamation point on the planetary significations.

April 23rd - Scorpio Full Moon

We're finally out of eclipse season, so things are starting to calm down. However, this lunation (04♏) squares Pluto (02♒), bringing some conflict in. It'll be stabilizing, but not necessarily comforting. Acceptance is bittersweet medicine. The full moon illuminates the deep transformative experiences Pluto brings to the early degrees of fixed signs in our charts. We're really getting to the bedrock of things. When Venus enters Taurus she'll square Pluto, and Mars will trine Pluto when he enters Aries. With those personal planets in domicile, it'll feel like coming home, but home is a little different. Pluto will retrograde soon and Chris predicts this station will bring major events in AI and related technologies. Mars is also quickly nearing his conjunction with Neptune, bringing the weaponization of these technologies.

April 25th - Mercury stations direct

April 28th - Mars conjunct Neptune (typo in image) Aside from weaponization of AI and social media, Mars-Neptune also connotes the manipulation of reality for political purposes. Revealing that a shocking news story was actually false wont necessarily diffuse the feelings it arose. Even if it didn't happen, you may still hold resentment towards the wrong target. Think the "fog of war" or shadowboxing. Other keywords include conflicts in or about water, idealism & ideologically-charged conflicts, confusion, acid, corrosion, lethargy, sapped vitality, and unnecessary martyrdom.

April 29th - Venus enters Taurus She immediately squares Pluto. Venus in domicile brings us to the election for the month:

Set the chart for about 12:55PM local time, which gets you Leo rising with the Ascendant ruler Sun in the 10th whole sign house in Taurus, where it's copresent with Jupiter, Uranus, and Venus. This chart is good for 10th house matters like career, reputation, social standing, overall life direction and accomplishing goals. The Moon is in Capricorn, applying to a trine with Jupiter, bringing support. Mercury has stationed direct, bringing us away from some of the delays and issues we experienced earlier. Even the Mars-Saturn conjunction is about as far away as we can get, and a day chart Jupiter conjunct Uranus brings creativity to our efforts. Diana associates the 10th house with the gestating parent and thus recommends doing something nice for your mom now.

April 30th - Mars enters Aries Entering firey and decisive Aries, Mars is no longer encumbered by slow Saturn and diffuse Neptune. This complete chapter change comes with a sextile to Pluto--the tone shift will feel like getting our oxygen back. This opens us up for a lot of quick movements through Aries and Gemini in May.

So you wanna get into NCT eh?

Let's do this.

NCT - Neo Culture Technology - is naturally an intimidating group to get into - there's twenty members but there have been members added and people have left and there's another group set to debut and there's subgroups and everything seems all over the place all the time, but if you're willing to jump into it all it's so absolutely incredibly worth it and less complicated than it seems at first! Let me walk you through some basics- I'll do more posts to get deeper into each group later, but this will be a primer for getting you started.

Where to start? NCT officially debuted in April 2016 with fifteen members after promoting for a while as trainees and with other trainees (including future members of Red Velvet) under the SM Rookies banner. Part of the original plan for NCT as announced at their debut was to continuously add members with no end in sight, and to expand into a group with members from all over the world who could promote in different areas at the same time. This... didn't really come to fruition ultimately, tho they do have members from seven(ish) countries. (Taiwan is a free country y'all, that makes seven. Macau is a "special administrative region of China", that's the ish.) There will be one more unit added to NCT soon, the final new set of members, but this post is going to proceed with only the current groups and subunits since The Babies (as I like to call them) aren't officially debuted yet and I don't feel like explaining them here since this is already going to be long enough. Either way, NCT's unlimited expansion has officially ended which hopefully removes that bit of intimidation.

Now on to some music!

The first song and MV that NCT released was under the broad NCT U umbrella, and started with The 7th Sense. (Wait what the heck is NCT U, you ask? I'll get there, trust me, keep reading)

The 7th Sense unit was comprised of Taeyong, Mark, Jaehyun, Doyoung, and Ten, five of the fifteen debut members.

The next day, NCT U released Without You, sung by Doyoung, Taeil, and Jaehyun, so two boys we saw already plus a new one.

The full list of members (that I and no one else expects you to remember at this point) at debut were Taeil, Taeyong, Johnny, Yuta, Ten, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark, Haechan, Jaemin, Jeno, Renjun, Chenle, and Jisung.

Since debut, members have been added, growing NCT to 23, and then a few left, dropping it back to 20. In 2018, Kun, Jungwoo and Lucas were added; in 2019, Xiaojun, Hendery, and Yangyang were added; in 2020, Shotaro and Sungchan were added. In 2023, Lucas was removed after being on hiatus for almost two years because of a scandal, and then Shotaro and Sungchan were pulled from NCT and re-debuted in SM's new boy group, RIIZE. (No, we're not going to get into my opinions or emotions about any of this right now, yes, I have a lot of opinions about both things and a lot of emotions about SungTaro. Maybe in a different post if people really wanna know.)

So what do I mean when I call NCT U an umbrella? Is that what the U stands for? No, not really, tho it's a handy way to think of things! U stands for United (or Unlimited, depending on who you ask) and is a flexible title that allows them to release songs using any members of the whole group. This lets them pick from a pool of currently 20 different members with different skills to best fit the concept of a song, and has allowed them to do things like release songs with multiple lead vocalists, songs with a collection of rappers, etc. It's super flexible- some U songs have only two members performing, some have nine, etc. (Once you become familiar with all of the members, the U songs become a lot of fun when it comes to seeing who gets mixed and matched for projects!)

Overall, don't worry too much about NCT U yet. Having the basic knowledge that it could be anyone is really enough to get you going and you can come back to all of the NCT U releases later. NCT has released four albums now as a full group (Empathy, Resonance, Universe, and Golden Age) that have both fixed subunit songs and NCT U songs with mixed members so there's a bunch of fun with all that later once you've gotten more of the basics down.

The key to getting into NCT is splitting it into the sub-units, of which there are currently four, including U.

NCT U - flexible subunit of varying combined members

NCT 127 - 9 member fixed unit, concept being that they're focused on Seoul (127 is the longitude of Seoul)

NCT Dream - 7 member fixed unit, original concept involving the fact that they were the seven youngest members at debut

WayV - 6 member fixed unit, releasing music primarily in Mandarin with a focus on promotion in China

The easiest thing to do if you want to take on learning all 20 members (plus the 3 former members which are at least in past MVs and content so you'll come across them either way) is to pick one of the three fixed units (NCT 127, NCT Dream, or WayV) and learn the members of that group before moving on to the next. NCT 127 and NCT Dream also share two members, which gives you a little leg up when you get to going from one to the other!

I'll make posts getting into each group more in depth soon to talk about members and with my fave songs and recommendations etc, so for each of the fixed units, I'll put in here their debut plus a recent song so you can get a grasp of how each group has grown and changed.

NCT 127 was the first of the subunits to debut, releasing Firetruck in July 2016.

127 debuted with Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Haechan. The fashion and hair in this MV is uhhhhhh wild? Yeah we'll go with wild.

127 has gone through some lineup changes over the years as they've changed and grown- they added Johnny, Doyoung, and Jungwoo, and then Winwin went on indefinite 127-hiatus when he joined WayV in 2019.

Their most recent release was in October of this year and is so good that it managed to make it into my top 5 songs of this year on Spotify in slightly over a month so uhhhhh yeah here's Fact Check-

NCT 127 is known for having music that's a little more experimental and sometimes just straight up weird, so you'll see a lot of mixed opinions of them on the internet (I've seen people calling some/all of their songs just noise music) but they're ultimately like most kpop groups and have released stuff in all kinds of styles with different mixed influences, so it's worth listening to at least a few things before forming any kinds of opinions about their music if you don't like the first song or two you hear. I mean. It's worth it EXTRA if you do like thier music obviously. Anyway.

Next up!

NCT Dream debuted not long after NCT 127 in August 2016 as a bunch of ACTUAL BABIES, aged between 14-17 at debut. Yeah that's right, Chenle and Jisung were both 14. They debuted with the now iconic Chewing Gum, that involves some wild hoverboard choreography that isn't shown as much in the MV but was probably more dangerous than a bunch of kids should have been doing on stages all the time (especially one time outdoors in the rain???), but they all survived so I guess it's fine?

WHAT A BUNCH OF ADORABLE BABIES.

NCT Dream debuted with Mark, Haechan, Renjun, Jeno, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung. Yes, Mark and Haechan are also in the NCT 127 list! They are workaholics who can't stop won't stop basically. (Yes, we also all worry about their health. It's A Thing.)

The original concept behind Dream was that it would be the youngest members of NCT, and when members grew old enough they would graduate out, and new younger members of NCT would be added in turn as members were added to NCT. The only element of this that was ever put into practice was graduating out Mark in December 2018 as he was the eldest member; no new members were added however, and eventually the whole plan was scrapped and Mark was re-added to Dream in 2020 (back where he BELONGS) and Dream officially became a fixed unit like 127 and WayV.

The boys are now between the ages of 21-24, and their music has grown a lot as they've grown out of their cute concepts and into more mature looks and sounds. Their most recent release was in July of this year, ISTJ.

They're still known for having a more youthful, optimistic vibe, and there's something incredibly uplifting and exuberant about them in general at basically all times. These boys have been together for half of their lives at this point and really grown up together and- yeah I have a lot of emotions about Dream that I'll save for later.

Moving on!

WayV time! WayV officially debuted in 2019 with the Mandarin version of Regular.

(NCT 127 released both Korean and English versions of Regular as well, and they are the last NCT 127 MVs that feature Winwin before he became 127-inactive and became fully active with WayV instead.)

WayV debuted with Winwin, Kun, Ten, Xiaojun, Hendery, Yangyang, and Lucas. Lucas has since been removed from NCT and WayV and the other six members have continued to promote as a six member group.

WayV has hit some snags, especially with things out of their control like the pandemic- they live in Seoul when they're not promoting or touring, and travel into and out of China has been difficult for obvious reasons for the past few years, which has made it harder for them to be pushing into the Chinese music industry when they haven't been able to travel in China as freely as they could have under other circumstances and couldn't do things like concerts or fanmeets. They have started touring and promoting more heavily in Southeast Asia more recently, and some of the members like Winwin and Ten have spent time in China over the past few years working on things like acting in dramas, participating in variety shows, or judging on Chinese dance competition shows as well. Xiaojun is also currently a host on one of the the Korean weekly music shows, SBS's The Show.

WayV's most recent comeback was actually last month but I'm gonna use their comeback from the VERY end of last year (Dec 28) in this post because I'm still obsessed with this song-

WayV mix a lot of different elements into their music and are the most multilingual of the groups- since they're based in Seoul, they've often performed on the weekly Korean music shows with English versions of their songs, and they have the NCT member who speaks the most languages in Ten, who is Thai, and speaks Thai, Mandarin, Korean, English, and Japanese, as well as multiple members who speak four (Hendery and Xiaojun both speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and English; Yangyang speaks Mandarin, English, Korean and German). They also have Kun, who is both a licensed airplane pilot and licensed sky diver (who promoted Phantom by skydiving with a banner for it) as well as being a music producer AND the only member of NCT to have a university degree. Basically WayV is a bunch of overachievers who deserve the whole world.

So..... that's all the subunits! I hope this breakdown gave you a place to start with. Feel free to use this as a base to go look up more information about each subunit, or watch the videos I included here and the ones I linked throughout in the text in various places to get started. I will also make some more posts about each subunit to get into more about the members and more songs by each so you can hang out and wait for those too!

I've talked to a few people about how to get into NCT in basics, and this post is dedicated to @catatonicrainbow most specifically as being the most recent internet pal to want to get into NCT and being the one who finally got me to make some kind of thing like this. Meanwhile, @poetry-protest-pornography and I have been discussing starting a kpop podcast where I teach her about different groups as my knowledge is vast and deep and has been accumulating in my brain since around 2008 and she's MUCH newer to kpop than me, and I often infodump at her already about various groups. Theory: Who was conspiring with Nick?

In season 2 of the All Saints Street donghua Nick's goal is to take the Demon King's powers from Neil. His first attempt by making a deal with Demon King directly fails (S2E02) and he would later get a call from a shadow figure (S02E04). That is how we learn that he was not working alone; someone was helping him find a method to absorb the Demon King's power.

As of now (Season 4) nothing has been revealed about this figure even if they still appear in the opening and Nick has turned 'good'. Because the Demong King story line is wholly original to the adaptation, there is no hint as to who this person might be in the manhua either. That can't stop me from speculating. I have three theories right now as it who could it be. Spoilers for two yet to be introduced manghua characters.

First Suspect: Will Bovil

First, I'll start with my least likely suspect. Will was introduced in Chapter 386; his black horns indicate that he is from a noble lineage of demons. He is very powerful, probably the most powerful out of all the demons in the series right now. He and his family could easily be rewritten to be connected to the Demon King (who coincidentally has a black color scheme) in the adaptation.

Outside of this tenuous connection there is also the note that Nick receives being written in ochre yellow. The eye color in the official illustrations is flexible. Most of the time all demons will have a yellow eye color, but in the most recent 7th anniversary illustration Will and his brother have the most intense yellow shade eye color that matches with the note. An even weaker connection is that the scheme for the clubs line (The one with Will as king) in the 6th anniversary deck is yellow, admittedly for the 7th anniversary the color scheme is now purple.

The weakest point of this theory is that none of the actions taken by the shadow figure fit Will's apathetic character at all. He isn't one to seek power, or anything outside of being with Sasha really. It would be too OOC and while the adaptation has significantly changed some characters (Damao being the biggest example) I think it could be a step too far to make Will a villain.

Second Suspect: Witt 'Iron Fang'

Iron Fang is a commoner vampire introduced in Chapter 412. He befriends Lynn online to scam him, but Ira stops him and turns him in to the police because Iron Fang is an international smuggler. Iron Fang is the closest that we have to a straight up 'bad guy' in 1031 WSJ. One of the most recent fantasy AU comics (Ch 780) makes him a confidant that betrayed the king Lynn to usurp his throne. If anyone could be a villain in the adaptation is him.

As he is a smuggler it would also explain how he got the book and later on the 'wand' to extract the Demon King's powers. Iron Fang also displayed a disdain towards angels, giving him a motive for why he would want to awaken the Demon King: destroy the current peace between evil beings and angels.

The biggest point against it being Iron fang, is that he was introduced too close to when the anime was being released. March/April 2020 was the first strip where he appears. Season 1 was released in April 2020 with season 2 releasing in October, but obviously the donghua was being worked on way before that. However, Iron Fang could easily retroactively be made to be this shadowy figure even if back then they had no idea who this character would be. Which leads me to...

Third Suspect: New character

The dongua has created a few, admittedly nameless, characters. Mostly the supernatural league leaders are all original and of course the Demon King himself. I can see out suspect being a new character, maybe someone to contrast with the Demon King. Previously I was rambling about the demons' yellow eye color matching a note, but you know what group is also associated with yellow/gold?

I think an angel villain would be an interesting twist, but I'm just a humble reader and this is just my opinion. Right now, anything is possible, and I trust the team behind the adaptation to cook up something good.

The State of The International Proletariat

The State of The International Proletariat report May 1 2024

Yesterday April 30th marked the 49th anniversary of the liberation of Saigon by the National Liberation Front. Yesterday in Vietnam, celebrations took place reflecting the history and heroics of those who gave their lives to liberate Vietnam from France and then the American occupation government. However, like many celebrations in recent days, since 2023, there has been a shift in the focus of many celebrations. Just as much as yesterday’s celebrations were about a united and free Vietnam, too many it was also about those who were still unfree. This led to the Peoples’ War in Palestine that was reignited on October 7th in what many are calling the 3rd Intifada. And the reactionary genocide that Isreal is carrying out as revenge. Vietnam, however, is not the only nation to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people in their fight against apartheid. In recent days, people from all around the world have come together and drew a line to say ‘no more’. The international proletariat spearheaded these movements directly. Facing state repression and violence as a reaction to the solidarity of the working class is showing the Palestinian People, So on this the 135th International Workers Day, we wish to publish the State of The International Proletariat to examine the state of causes from the international proletariat and the world more broadly.

We will break this down into two regions, Asia, and Africa will break this report down. We wish to now necessarily be comprehensive but give a general state of the class warfare and solidarity of class warfare as it has happened between 2023 and now.

To begin, the first region we will be covering is Asia. Asia has been one of the most active regions in the past decades and the 2020s are no different, being a general hotbed of action. In Southeast Asia, conflicts have been smouldering. The civil war in Myanmar which started in 2021 after the Tatmadaw coup, where the military seized power from the popular bourgeois government in Myanmar. In 2023, the peoples’ war in Myanmar exploded with the various regional factions and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (the armed wing of the Myanmar National Truth and Justice Party) playing a leading role in challenging the Junta in Myanmar with its allies in the Northern Alliance. Other proletarian groups wage people’s war against the Tatmadaw, such as the People’s Defence Force and People’s Liberation Army, who are also fighting against the Junta. Various working class and bourgeoisie elements have united in this popular front against the Tatmadaw to restore democracy and, for many groups, to gain the autonomy denied to them by previous governments. Additionally, many groups in the Northern Alliance demand to separate from Myanmar and be allowed to be free and independent.

Elsewhere in Asia, typical petty imperialism continues to be prevalent. The reactionary government in Indonesia, which destroyed the revolutionary government in 1965 with the aid of the United States and United Kingdom, continues to wage its destructive and genocidal war in West Papua. The West Papua National Liberation Army continues its decades long war with the Imperialist Indonesian state. Proletarian activists, especially in Australia and New Zealand have begun to bring light to the issue bring the war and genocide in West Papua to be more than a niche geopolitical conflict that gets no attention and put pressure on the bourgeois who make millions funding Indonesias imperialist actions in the region.

In the Indian subcontinent, tensions continue to rise, especially around the occupied Khalistan. The movement has seen a resurgence, especially after the new head of the movement, Amritpal Singh returned to India to make further moves to fight for Khalistan. In 2023, the fascist Modi government arrested him and many of his associates as part of a larger crackdown on Sikh politics internally and abroad. The Modi government allegedly attempted to assassinate Khalistan activists abroad, including Hardeep Singh Nijjar, whom the Canadian government firmly accused the Indian government of assassinating. Meanwhile, in 2024 tensions only continue to rise in India as rebel groups from Khalistan and many other such as the Naxalites who continue to fight a people’s war in India target senior members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (Party of Prime Minister Modi), police and military targets with many smaller militias all over the subcontinent fighting Modi’s government for various reasons, India, in the opinion of many, is a powder-keg waiting to explode. With many smaller insurgencies only waiting to burst into a wider civil war like in the neighbouring Myanmar,

Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the working class actively fights against foreign influence and military corruption to secure justice for Prime Minister Imran Khan, who was arrested in 2023. Demonstrations and protests in Pakistan have been common, as many want Imran Khan released and restored as Prime Minister of Pakistan. He and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have been widely popular because of challenging the norms of Pakistani politics and making real changes to the corrupt system of Pakistan. These protests remained common all the way up till the recent Pakistan general elections. Where the working class accused the corrupt military of Pakistan of rigging the elections in favour of less popular parties. Which sparked widespread outrage and demonstrations which were suppressed by the military and police.

At the same time in occupied Balochistan, both Iran and Pakistan still suppress the region heavily in 2024 strikes being carried out against Islamist separatist militias in Balochistan by Iran, causing temporary tensions between Iran and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, in Asia, the true defining conflict of 2023 and 2024 has been the start of the Third Intifada, the subsequent genocide carried out against Palestine, by Israel and the regional conflict the war has exploded into. As we all know, on October 7th 2023, the militias of Gaza made the decision due to the continued Israeli blockade and the living situation in Gaza quickly becoming untenable due to population growth, all of which was reported by the UN in 2015. This led to the political situation in Gaza to be one of the necessary change and fast. Before October 7th already many Gazan survived on just three to eight litres of water per day. Which led to the opening battle of the third Intifada, the October 7th Attack. The attack saw various militias take the IDF by surprise and captured numerous positions and held them for many hours, only fully were the militias pushed back to Gaza a few days after October 7th. After that is when Israel cut off all resources to Gaza in what has since been declared by many workers a breach of humanitarian law. This was followed by‌ several weeks of bombing leading up to the ground invasion of Gaza and the beginning of the genocide proper by Isreal. Over the next six months, the conflict which started in Gaza had exploded to the whole region with groups like Hezb-Allah, Ansar-Allah and Kateb Hezb-Allah all striking Israel within weeks of the conflicts beginning and they still play an active and constant Role six months after the fighting has begun. But it is from Palestine and the genocide that many workers worldwide have seen hope still flourish. With statements from two factions fighting the people’s war in Palestine, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine have played major roles in the Third Intifada, making some of the most inspiring propaganda and unifying the working class in ways not seen in over three decades. And we wish to note that in all the countries and movements we have talked about so far, all of them have shown solidarity and unity with Palestine. Palestine has united the world in bravery and action. And even in America today we see the bravery inspire as students fight for what’s right in universities all over the Americas and world facing violence and repression like they did at CUNY with the NYPD forcefully beating and arresting many students at CUNY the night of April 30th.

Palestine has, with her actions for her freedom, inspired the whole world to strive for their freedom and to support Palestine in the same. This has led to a certain uptick in activity in Georgia experiencing protests by the working class against corruption and the Russian puppet government, and in Armenia against Azerbaijan expansionism.
