Ruby is a rare type of protagonist
This is gonna be long, you’ve been warned!
I am a grown ass adult woman. I like female protagonists, I prefer watching them and relating to them, and always have.
I’ve watched a lot of animes since my teenage years, upwards of 400 last I counted on MyAnimeList a few years ago. I’ve been to Tokyo - twice - and spent at least 20 hours scouring the anime stores of Akihabara. I paid the Japanese mailing service to send a Saber figurine back to my home country since it was too big to bring in my luggage. (This one!)
Why does this matter and what does it have to do with Ruby? Read on:
During my years of being an utterly anime fanatic, I started to grow bored. After 400 animes, you’ve seen most of the plot twists. Most of the stereotypical personalities. All the classics have been watched and rewatched. The story beats, even if presented in a new packaging, becomes predictable.
You start to see the patterns, so to say. I’ve been hyped more times than I can count, only to be disappointed when yet another promising series took a predictable, cliché turn with its story or characters. It may not be sudden, sometimes it happens several episodes or even a few seasons into the show. So you never know for sure until having spent a lot of time watching.
There are a lot of GREAT animes with male protagonists, but how rare isn’t it to find one that does NOT build towards the guy being needing to become stronger than his enemies and winning some important final fight? (as is common in shounen in general)
As time went by I found myself getting more and more picky with what I wanted to spend time watching. I prefer shows with the cool, badass, strong girls, since those are the ones I enjoy watching and them being girls makes it easier for me to relate and enjoy their achievements.
Cool...
Tumblr media
Badass...
Tumblr media
...strong girls.
Tumblr media
These are what I want. Finding them, however, can be tedious work, especially in the role as main protagonists.
In the anime world, there are some common tendencies with strong female characters:
1) The badass female character is either a side-kick to the male protagonist, eventually become overshadowed by a male protagonist, OR in some cases by some new girl, because heaven forbid any of the cool girls get developed beyond their one single character arc. (ex. Fate/Zero, A Certain Magical Index, Shakugan no Shana, Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, any anime with a harem, and so many others - they can still be good shows though, that’s not the point!)
2) There are great animes out there with great female protagonists, however they are usually either a) sexualized (ex. Kill la Kill) or b) shows geared towards kids (ex. Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, The Owl Hourse (yes, I’m putting this here even if it’s not an anime) or c) romance focused (ex. Revolutionary Girl Utena). I love these shows for other reasons though!
3) The actually great action animes with badass female protagonists that are allowed to develop and not be overshadowed by their crush/secret male protagonist etc. do exist, but are sadly few and far between. (Soul Reaper is pretty great with Maka, although BlackStar steals a lot of space, and I prefer the anime for this exact reason. A Certain Scientific Railgun was my fav for a long time, but sadly Mikoto is in love with the harem protagonist of the main show and gets overshadowed whenever he’s involved.)
And it doesn’t matter if the show is named after the girl(s) or not!
Here are two girls, each with their own anime named after them (Railgun/Index). Guess who’s the most important character who actually drives the main story?
Tumblr media
Shakugan no Shana: Yes, Shana is the name of the girl. Guess which character gets the most power-ups and biggest development?
Tumblr media
There’s nothing wrong with liking these shows, I mean I watched them too, and I enjoyed them for the most part... but sometimes I just... whish the dude would stay a side-kick?
So, first impression of RWBY was... cautious optimism?
When I first watched RWBY, because an online friend suggested it, I was surprised to find four strong female protagonists - and Ruby presented as the main protagonist what with the very first episode being named after her and there was no guy in sight.
Seems good? Even if the animation is super wonky. Ruby is cool. I like her. She has an awesome weapon too and is competent with it. She even bites back at people instead of becoming submissive. She gets saved in first episode yes, but it was by an adult woman after a woman took over the fight from Roman.
Also no fanservicy panty shots, suggestive angles and what-not? Seems promising.
Tumblr media
But I’d seen this before. A show starts out with a cool, interesting, badass girl as the main protagonist. Then at some point some guy gets introduced, and it turns out he’s special, and she crushes on him, and then he gets stronger, and now she’s his side-kick, and more girls come along, and everything keeps scaling upwards forever (except the original girl), you get the idea.
Then the show turned into some hybrid of Harry Potter x Sailor Moon x high school anime spinoff wannabe with questionable quality? Okay, but maybe with these interesting girls and some cool plot it can work?
The Jaundice episodes seemed to fulfill the prophecy and I lost interest halfway through. Yes, even if the episodes were just 6 minutes long.
I dropped RWBY and didn’t touch it again for several years.
By this point V4 had just finished. I was bored one day, and I decided to give RWBY another chance.
Got past V1 and V2. It was better than I remembered. Got to V3 and... oh no, is Pyrrha gonna do the “stealing the protagonist role” thing?
Ugh. I hate when shows trade out their main characters for new ones because they can’t figure out how to develop the ones they already have. Pyrrha is fine, but I’m already commited to team RWBY you know? Pyrrha is so OP compared to the others, it won’t be fun watching her just demolish every single foe ever, especially if she’s gonna have magic as well. It’ll just be her special story along with her romantic story with Jaune. She is going to overshadow team RWBY and then what, is Jaune gonna come along and do the same to her eventually?
With little faith left, I pressed on to episode 9, 10, 11, and... holy shit.
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT!
Tumblr media
They really did that, didn’t they? They really made me think they were incompetent, cliché writers and all that. That they were gonna focus on Pyrrha and Jaune going forwards because they had no idea how to tell a compelling story with the girls they’d already established as “main protagonists”.
And then they a) Killed off the “ace student” promised for greatness and b) destroyed the High School setting and c) Allowed the bad guys to win and d) Introduced an actual competent villain AND e) Gave new depth to team RWBY and Ruby in particular.
Tumblr media
I was HOOKED. I realized RWBY is a show that allows its protagonists to take a backseat now and then, only to hit hard with the actual meaningful stuff. Developing and letting side characters shine as well, so that it doesn’t seem like team RWBY are the only characters with purpose in this world.
Cause no matter how special or strong or high on the political ladder they are, no character in RWBY has all the answers, nor do they have any means to actually stop Salem.
They still don’t!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby has her silver eyes, but they didn’t “save” Beacon, or Pyrrha, or Penny, or Atlas. Actually, they may be more a curse than anything, now knowing about the Hound and what Salem can do to silver-eyed warriors. Not even a meaningful curse in the “I’ll become a cool vampire” type of curse, but just... horrible! No! Do not want this! Actually bad curse!
Ruby can’t solve this alone. She’s not all-powerful, she isn’t the shounen protagonist who always powers up in a pinch, she’s not the Maiden of all Maidens, she doesn’t always have the answers, she’s not Ozpin’s host or Salem’s Chosen or any of those clichés. That’s not the point of her character and the story we’re being told.
Ruby, like everyone else in this story, has to train, and learn, and fail, and do mistakes, and be wrong, and correct herself, and try again, and do better next time, and trust, take risks, experience loss and helplessness, and we have not seen the end of her development. I’m hyped for V9 not because of new fights, power-ups or what-not, but because I’m excited to see what Ruby has learned from their failures so far, how they’ll pick themselves up, and how they’ll try to approach the defeating of Salem.
Because at this point in time, they have no idea how to do any of it, and that’s what excites me most about RWBY and Ruby’s character in particular.
Ruby does not have all the answers, but she’s trying anyway, because the alternative is to give up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’s 17 years old and has been thrust into war against a foe that can’t die, into a role of leadership she has no grasp on how to handle. She’s trying to learn from those around her, imperfect human beings as they too are. She’s doing her best, and although she happens to have special Grimm-melting laser beam eyes, that won’t stop Salem. It won’t save Remnant from the gods.
“What are you?” is going to be a very interesting question to explore in V9.
Ruby is a rare type of protagonist because she’s not the answer to every problem, she’s not the Chosen One solely able to save the world. Yet she’s also not overshadowed or sidelined by someone else. Her story intrigues me more than anyone else’s, in any other show I’ve seen.

An imperfect, but still interesting ending to a rather good show
I don't consider the ending to be perfect by any means, but I think I'm far more ok with the ending than some people are. My mind is seeing this with the thought of it being some chaotic tragedy thriller.
I think it's primarily bc most (but not all!) of the things that people are frustrated with don't bother me as much. I'm ok with New and White dying. Am I upset? Oh yeah. Especially with White. That was hard to watch because I could see where it was going and I did not like it. He did not deserve to die.
At the same time, him surviving is the most obvious choice? It's satisfying. The good people live. That's how it should be. But you know who was good and died? Non. So in a way this just parallels the tragedy of Non dying. In a typical story White would live, but I guess they didn't want this to be a typical story and I respect that.
New dying and having Phee, Jin, and Tee "survive" means his revenge failed. Frustrating for the revenge enthusiasts. On that side I was never for or against it. I'm just here for the thrill of the ride, and a thrill it was. So him dying is kind of a "well that's an interesting choice" for me @ the writers. He did take people down with him in the process, so thats a positive. Tragic brothers I guess. Though New is far less innocent.
However, was it all really a failure? The ending directly states there's a strong possibility that they never actually survived for real. They don't remember escaping. So just like Non's script, nobody escapes. So at this point, it doesn't matter who "lives". They're all victims of the narrative here.
Also with the open ending.... Yeah I'm actually 100% fine with having an open ending. It's not the way I saw an open ending be portrayed (and honestly I got scared when I saw the time skip), but ok, I guess I can work with it. It leaves a lot of questions, which... isn't necessarily a bad thing, for me. Some may want closure, but I'm ok with not really knowing what happened to them.
Now for the people who survived... Tee I'm ironically the most ok with cause I predicted he'd live. For the sake of him being haunted by his regret. I originally thought it'd be more Non dying regret since all the emotions would resurface. But him stabbing his own bf to death... yeah that works ig. That's close. Probably still plagued with Non regret too, but I get White would be at the forefront of his mind.
Phee and Jin... So if this was a typical bl they'd be alive purely for shipping sake so they'd have an endgame ship. But DFF is not a typical bl, it's barely a true bl at all. They're questionably survivors. So is it about them being endgame??? I'm not sure. Is it about them bonding over realizing how they both hurt non and so they get to be aware of non haunting them. Maybe idk. Not sure what to think about them living honestly. I kinda put them as a 50/50 on surviving.
I get the frustration though. Half of me is sad my favs died. The other half is happy at seeing chaos. The two sides are fighting and I have decided to choose that enjoyed it more.

Fanfiction Tropes Tier List (Reader Edition)
Thank you for the tag, @deliciouskeys! (Here's their tier list!)
I tag: @fuckingpajamas, @phtalate, @tzeentchs-secretary-tea-time, @digitalbath1988, @vanshoundd, @tocadoguara, and anyone who wants to do this! I’d be very interested to see how y’all would rank ‘em :) but ofc no pressure if you don’t want to or have already done this!
…So I feel like I need to give some context🧍🏻‍♀️ The tl;dr is: I will read almost anything, but I have certain standards/ expectations that must be met in order for me to continue.
Tumblr media
I tried to organize these tropes from top ➡️ bottom, have strong feelings about (would more likely read) ➡️ am less passionate about going from left ➡️ right. For the bottom tiers with asterisks, I arranged them from “this specific trope represents the tier description” ➡️ “eh, it fits here but I don’t really hold strong opinions about these” from left ➡️ right.
⬇️Expand for a detailed breakdown below the line break ⬇️
Tumblr media
My Tier List for fanfic tropes I consume as a Reader differ in some areas from tropes I’d like to write or would be open to writing as a Writer. As a reader, I usually give almost every fanfic a chance with my own arbitary criteria—although what I read is very ship dependent according to their canon dynamic (for example, I will devour Enemies to Lovers for one specific OTP in one fandom, but would NEVER read that trope applied to a different fav ship of mine in a different fandom). I also tossed in some danmei BL tropes, for funsies and because I want more people to know about them <3.
And remember, if you like any of these that I personally don’t, that’s great! Everyone has their own preferences. Please don’t take offense. These are just how I view these tropes specifically according to me, haha. It says less about you and more about me being picky with what I like to read and gives context about what kind of bibliophile (person who likes reading) I am.
Tier 1 (SSS Level)
Slowburn: Just as context, I regularly read light novels (hetero, danmei, and baihe) which can easily range from 100ch-300ch each. So slowburns is the quintessential demisexual experience for me, and I love it when they’re long fics where we get to see characters grow and relationships develop, with worldbuilding and an interesting plot. I think the longest I’ve ever read was +2.8K chapters of a story I was addicted to. Typically if I see it’s a slowburn, I know I’m gonna have a good time.
Fix-It Fic: As much as I love canon of the original source material, there are certain canon story decisions and/or plotholes that hurt me—so it’s always great to see someone write their own interpretation to try to “fix it.” You get banger fics and it’s just so creative and a nice catharsis.
Canon Divergence: Same as how I regard a Fix-It.
Dark Fic: Irl I obviously do not condone any of the things that typically happen in Dark Fics. But as someone who has consumed your usual wholesome healthy Lifetime Original style romance stories for a loooooong time, that type of milquetoast wholesomeness has become bland and predictable for me—which is why the wild and crazy shenanigans that happen in Dark Fics spices things up for me and I like that it keeps me guessing. I don’t want to read about things from my life. I think screwed up characters can offer so much more interesting stakes than a Good Guy. I like the tension and uncertainty. Ex. this is why I tend to prefer the protag/villain ships over the protag/childhood friend ships; it’s why a princely character who is secretly yandere is so much more interesting than a sidekick character with a bland and forgettable personality. The writers of Dark Fics, 9/10 times, produce something so interesting that I can’t put my phone down and I just have to binge through their entire fic because the suspense is k*lling me.
Conspiracy & Schemes: Mysteries? Political intrigue? Palace drama? Yes, please, inject it into my veins.
Strong Protagonist & Strong Love Interest: It’s similar to how I’ve come to prefer reading Dark Fics. The market’s too oversaturated with the damsel in distress trope being saved by his/her prince charming. I’ve read too many novels and fanfics about that dynamic, it’s gotten a little stale for me, haha. Give me the clever, scheming, morally grey or villainous MC with a strong backbone. I like badasses. As for the ML or FL, I also prefer them to be strong or scheming as well so they can be a power couple with the MC—and curb-stomp the world and their enemies. …*holds face like a blushing maiden* Don’t they sound like the equivalent of a fairytale couple?
Mutual Pining: Yes, yes, yes. It’ll never be not good.
Revenge-Rebirth: I love underdog characters plotting their secret machinations and getting their revenge. Pair it with a rebirth, where a previous villain(ess) or cannon fodder who’d suffered before learns from the mistakes of their previous life and uses their second life to faceslap their enemies and turn their destiny around? Yes, yes, yes.
Survival Game: I love the Infinite Flow (survival horror/ death game) genre, what can I say? If you’ve read the famous ones, you know why. The writing is almost always superb and so interesting (seeing all the unique horror instances that the MC has to figure out in order to survive). It’s just so imaginative.
Obsessive Love: Same as how I regard a Dark Fic. I do not condone it irl, but an unhealthily codependent partner in my fictional romances? Yes. I want them to be even more obsessed with my favorite character and fall deeper and deeper in love.
Misunderstanding: There is a difference between how I view misunderstandings versus how I view miscommunication (which can grate on my nerves if not executed well). I believe you fundamentally cannot have a good long fic without some misunderstandings that the MC or Love Interest has to clear up, and it’s always so good once the cat is out of the bag and the truth is revealed.
Isekai/ Transmigration (World-Hopping): Yes. Gimme. It’s like 10 stories in one. I like it when your ordinary layperson gets transported into a different fantastical world or pseudohistorical world or into a different modern world of much different circumstances depending on their new identity. I like these duck out of water stories.
Historical AU & Royalty AU: There’s just something about pseudo-medieval settings that can be so charming and interesting to read. If you’ve got royalty thrown in, there’s the additional seasoning of power struggles between members of royalty and aristocracy, and political intrigue, and seeing how a kingdom is run. Writers tend to do a good job worldbuilding these types of stories with characters I like moved into this new setting.
Established Relationship: The domesticity and PDA of it all can make my heart go dokidoki (especially if they’re a powerhouse couple). It can fall into the danger of coming across as bland, so this depends on the plot and writer’s execution of their relationship. I gotta have some stakes.
Enemies to Lovers: I love it for certain pairings.
Forbidden Love: It’s the tabooness of it that makes it interesting to read.
Friends to Lovers: As long as it’s not milquetoast or bland, I think most of the time this is executed well. It’s a step below an Established Relationship, so they’ve got wiggle room to develop into that.
Soulmate AU: It’s inherently romantic, what can I say? I will REALLY LOVE it though if the writer gives it a unique twist.
First Kiss & Sharing a Bed: It’s tender and sweet (or hot) and I will never get tired of it. You can’t go wrong with it.
Magic AU & Fairytale AU: It’s a fantasy world. As long as it’s not bland and there is a serviceable magic system, I will generally like it. (One caveat: it cannot be a HP AU. C’mon. As much as I like HP, you can do better as a writer than transporting these characters into the HP universe. Come up with your own magic system.) For fairytale AUs, it’s basically your Hans Christian Andersen/ Disney fairytale with your favorite characters. I don’t think you can go wrong with it. I just love any AUs in general.
Huddle for Warmth: Same as First Kiss & Sharing a Bed & PWP.
Tier 2 (A Level)
Fluff: Oftentimes reading cute fluff (like sneaking quick kisses or holding hands) can make me blush and giggle more than reading p0rn or smut on my phone in public. HOWEVER, unlike a oneshot where I can tolerate it, for me fluff has be spread sporadically throughout if it’s a long fic. If the long fic is just too fluffy and sweet all the way throughout (force-feeding me “meng” and “dog food” (PDA)), I get the equivalent of a sugary overdose and any interest I have for the fic dries up into “ugh, that’s enough”—which usually ends up with me dropping the fic if the fluff had oversaturated everything (all sugar/ fluff, no real meaty substance). There’s only so much cutesy uwu, descriptions of someone’s soft coquettish voice scratching the Love Interest’s heart like a cat’s paw, etc that I can stomach at a time. It’s like junk food; I can’t eat too much of it.
PWP: As a connoisseur of all things slowburn and a demisexual irl, I have to be in the mood to read a PWP. It’s p0rn without plot; I don’t expect to be reading much plot (although it’d be a pleasant surprise if the p0rn came with some serviceable-enough plot 👌). It is what’s written on the tin. I’m not here expecting a Shakespearean masterpiece. A writer was gripped by the h0rny and decided to share, and this was the result. I’m here to turn my brain off, have fun, and read about two of my favorite fictional characters banging each other stupid.
Im Vino Veritas (Drunken Confessions): Yes, gimme. I’m picky about the execution and the follow-up scene that comes after the drunken confession though (after the drunk character sobers up). The writer has to be skilled enough for me to root for the character and not cringe (unless the whole point is to cringe at the drunk confessing because it’s established they’re a cannon fodder character who won’t get together with the MC or Love Interest).
Missing Scenes: I generally like it when writers come up with a What-If scenario that happens between Point A and Point C of canon. It can be fun and believable—especially if they get the characterization right. Then it’s like reading a little bonus content (like, you know it’s a person’s headcanon but, dang, it’s written so well I could almost believe it was canon).
Office AU: I love me my rich Sugar Daddy AUs and doting CEO husbands pampering and spoiling their lovers. I enjoy reading about a business expanding into a powerful corporation and the power struggles that come with. It’s a guilty pleasure. (I do have to try not to think about HR though.)
Showbiz AU: It’s a guilty pleasure. Sometimes I learn something new about the acting or modeling or fashion industry, and it’s interesting. I also like seeing the journey of the unknown underdog MC rising like a phoenix from a nobody to a well-respected powerhouse of their industry.
Reincarnation: Same as how I regard almost other AUs here (inject it into my veins). With reincarnation though, I usually like to see the rebirth have an affect on the story. It’s an important plot device after all. If it seems like the whole rebirth part could be omitted and it wouldn’t even impact the story with that aspect removed, then…well, sorry, the story didn’t execute it well.
Cold Love Interest: Depends on the execution, but I like it when you have this character who’s known to be cold slowly be thawed out the more and more they start opening up to the Main Character—until they inevitably fall in love. It’s essentially reading about an ice cube that has melted into warm spring water. The transformation can be so beautiful and moving, because you’ve been following them on their journey of self-discovery and finding happiness. (However, my tolerance toward Cold Characters does have a limit; they can’t be irredeemable at the start. Because if it’s the equivalent of the Wife Chasing Crematorium trope, where the Love Interest is a cheating (?) murderous (?) selfish abusive assh0le who has essentially traumatized the MC and still gets together with them at the end…….ugh, 9/10 times I will dislike it even if the ML or FL realizes how much their actions have hurt the MC and tries their best to make up to it for the rest of their lives.)
Dense Protagonist: A protagonist who is oblivious to the Love Interest character pining and simping hardcore after them can be hilarious. However, I am generally picky about its execution. It can teeter the fine line between endearing and dumb/ annoying. At some point, their denseness can become too much (to the point where it’s no longer funny or amusing) that my suspension of disbelief drops and it’s no longer fun to read the story for me personally.
Unrequited Love: Depends on the context. Is it the writer’s intention to make it bittersweet and unresolved? Is the character pining after their unrequited love, and it’s the early stage of the story where the MC or ML/FL have yet to reciprocate? Is the intention to make me cry? For all of these, I usually like to know before I jump into a fic—because I’m a sappy woman who gets easily teary-eyed and I easily get touched by moving depictions of the human connection. So I don’t want my young glass maiden heart to be hurt too much, haha; there’s only so much abuse my heart can handle.
Crossover: At some point, I run out of fics (the good ones) to read for the specific ship I like. So I turn to crossovers, to see how my favorite MC can be shipped with someone else. If the writer’s good, they can blend the worlds and these cast of characters together seamlessly. It’s like a brain puzzle—so I have countless admiration for those who can execute crossovers well.
Time Loop: This is your usual Nicholas Sparks’ (a romance writer) type of story; a time loop is basically Groundhog Day where the MC has to figure out how to break the time loop—and I’m usually invested in the mystery of how they’re gonna pull it off. I’d like to say when I’m in the mood to read this, writers tend to execute the trope well (my logic: if you’re going to introduce a plot device, make it relevant to the story; if it can be omitted and it doesn’t detract from the experience, then it doesn’t need to be there).
Hurt/ Comfort: To an extent. It’s the same as Fluff or Angst for me. Moderation is key.
Sex Pollen & Bang or Die: Similar to how I regard PWPs.
Arranged Marriage: Generally I will like if executed well. I almost put this in Tier 3, because I more often than not don’t usually click on a fic if I see this trope tagged (because my brain thinks about the irl implications). BUT…it is the premise of almost every transmigration (isekai) light novel or manhua/manhwa I read—and they work because it’s a fish out of water story where the MC finds out there they have an arranged marriage to a king, prince, duke, noble, knight, etc with a certain cruel or perfect reputation, and you get to read about them learning about their real selves and falling in love over time with their fiancée/fiancé. And it’s so cute. This is my expectation when I read fics with this trope: a fairytale-like romance, where the arranged marriage managed to work out in this couple’s favor instead of it being loveless.
Baby Fic & Pregnancy Fic: I would not go out of my way to read oneshots where the whole premise is specifically only about either of this. It has to be just one of the ingredients in the whole long fic. Writing children is tougher than you think (you have to be so careful writing about them because you can toe the line between making them precocious and making them annoying), and some people are unable to respectfully write pregnancy characters, choosing instead to focus on the humor of pregnancy stereotypes—but the gags can come across as shallow writing than giving it the proper respect it deserves. So it depends on 1) the execution and 2) my mood. I’ve read a couple good ones, but that’s because the writer is good at delivering the concept that is easily digestible and frames the whole process of birth and child rearing as a beautiful process of nature and life.
Tier 3 (B Level)
A/B/O: I will not intentionally go out of my way 99/100 times to read Omegaverse stories. Shocker, I know. It’s just, for me, I tend to find a majority of these general A/B/O fics…shallow and of little substance. Most of the time, I find the writing can also be a bit distasteful, especially when it comes to the omega and alpha dynamic in this kinda story (in the wrong hands, the writer can make their story come across as r@pey and sexist/ misogynistic, especially if an alpha’s being aggressive and forceful with the MC because they’ve been affected by the smell of an omega’s heat—and now I’m reading descriptions of the omega character sobbing and crying out “no, no, no” and “please stop” and I’m in disbelief why people find this hot). I also don’t like the submissiveness of the omega character where it’s like I’m reading about a milquetoast wet rag who has all their fight drained out and has no personality other than being a hole that produces slick and blushes constantly. Also, for me, predictability is not something I like; if I can predict everything that’s going to happen in a fic, I will become bored. I need some kinda serviceable plot for me to be emotionally invested in an A/B/O fic or there’s some kinda hook that keeps me coming back. I can enjoy the rare one A/B/O fic out of one hundred similar A/B/O fics, but I am INCREDIBLY PICKY about what I choose. The premise itself is also very important to what makes or breaks an A/B/O fic experience for me (for example, if it’s a Dark fic, then I can be more forgiving because it’s expected for there to be dark themes).
Miscommunication: For me there’s no in-between. I will either hate or love this trope, depending on its execution in the fic. On the extreme end of hatred, I am ticked off when a conflict in the story can be easily resolved had the character(s) communicated properly—and it’s just so incredibly dumb. On the opposite end, miscommunication can be done well as a funny gag or a plot device that shows how differently characters can interpret a situation or words. So depending on which one of these the fic delivers, it determines how much I can enjoy a fic.
Love Triangle: See my opinion on Harem Fics, and now make my aversion less strong. I’m a wee more forgiving on this trope because it’s a love triangle where you start off with the MC, the ML/FL, and the love rival—and the story is about the MC choosing one of them. The other Love Triangle I’m okay with is if it’s obviously a poly ship where the MC ends up with two people—but it has to be executed well (I generally have to like both options for the MC). I’m more of a monogamous soulmate type of gal, so I’m kinda picky on the execution when a story focuses on the love triangle. It can’t drag on to the point where I find it to be insufferable. The danger with a love triangle is I, your reader, might come to like the Second Male Lead or Second Female Lead—and think they were a better fit for the MC than the actual Fe/Male Lead that was chosen just because this character was the writer’s favorite. In this case, the moment the wrong candidate is chosen, my interest in the fic dwindles and I feel like I’m reading a lesser version of what initially drew me to the fic in the first place. So now it’s the writer’s responsibility to show me why their choice is the correct one.
Angst: It’s like junk food; the key is moderation. I can’t have too much of it—otherwise it’s too angsty and the poignant emotional knives become laughable.
Humor: Humor is subjective, and differs for each person. What the writer finds funny might not be what I find funny. I’m more of a subtle gal. So if a fic’s meant to be funny throughout, it runs the risk of teetering towards me feeling secondhand embarrassment and cringing—because it’s too much and unfunny. But if a writer genuinely writes something surprising that makes me laugh, I do appreciate their talent at grasping the opportunity and having the know-how to effectively inject some lighthearted humor.
Fake Relationship: …My enjoyment level HEAVILY depends on its execution. It’s the characterization, their chemistry, and plot that have to save it for me.
Amnesia Fic: See, I understand it’s a plot device—which is why I’m a lil more forgiving. But don’t you hate it when all of a sudden a character gets memory wiped after all that progress? (I feel like I wasted my time just as the story was turning good, and now they have to start over? Kinda feels like unnecessary filler and it can drag on, and I feel like banging my head against the wall.) On a lesser extent of my pickiness, I don’t like it as much when it’s used as an exposition framing device, with the MC or Love Interest having no recollection of anything—and they’re lied to at the start about who they’re supposed to be…because you know there will be a dramatic fallout happening when they inevitably find out and that predictability (they fall out, and then you know sometime later something will bring them back together…the fakeout dramatic “breakup” is just so contrived and mechanical and formulaic) is what turns me off. (I don’t mind the amnesia trope as much if it’s used in a psychological horror/ thriller story though.)
Shizun F*cker: It’s your master (teacher) x disciple Chinese classic. I went through a phase of binging these stories and I find they’re generally all very good, but there does come a point where you start seeing similarities and not enough freshness with this trope and they all blend together (especially if it feels like it’s a pale imitation inferior copycat version of certain shizun f*cker classics). Nowadays this kinda premise has to be accompanied by something fresh and unique in order for me to keep reading—and turn my brain off from thinking about the irl teacher-student implications.
Secret Identities: If executed well, I like the reveal of their true identity in the story. It’s like you have this lowkey cute crush who has been helping you all this time—and you find out he’s, like, a mafia don or the CEO of a conglomerate or an international spy. It’s the gap moe contrast of who they pretend to be versus the secret badass they really are. It does come with the risk of some predictability for me though which can ruin my immersion (y’know…the typical MC’s outrage when finding out their Love Interest’s real identity: “You lied to me?! How can I believe you now when all you’ve done is lie to me?!” ➡️ A genuine apology ➡️ Fallout ➡️ Some sort of dramatic reconciliation after the MC or ML/FL was kidnapped).
Tier 4 (C Level)
Dubcon: It’s teetering on the verge between what I find tolerable and what I find unacceptable. As long as it does not fall into the Non-Con territory and isn’t written distastefully, I can read dubcon stories where the consent is a blurry line between these two characters.
Major Character Death: I usually don’t seek this out—because I’m a big weepy baby and I don’t want to grow attached to these characters and bawl at the end when the inevitable happens. But on the super rare instances where I do click on a fic despite this warning tag, it means I have mentally and emotionally prepared myself to get knifed in the heart.
Mary Sue Fic: As much as I love power scaling fics and OP MCs, it does get boring if there’s no setback or conflict for the MC to learn from. I mean, sure, it’s fine for them to steamroll over everyone but if I’m reading +1K chapters of them just steamrolling, they’ve become a Mary Sue. I want flaws. I want setbacks. There’s only so much chuunibyou I can tolerate. There’s only so much descriptions of how ungodly beautiful or how shockingly genius the MC is at everything before I start rolling my eyes. Fatigue has set in and the OP character has become an insufferable milquetoast Mary Sue/ Gary Stu who can do no wrong. My suspension of disbelief has finally been worn away into nothingness. This can also apply to the Love Interest character (I understand their role in the story is to satisfy the ideal dream lover trope—but please give dimension to the character). I want three-dimensional characters with backstory and flaws and an interesting personality, not Mary Sues or Gary Stus.
Y/N (OC Fic): If I’m reading fanfic about my favorite character(s), I don’t want to spend my time reading about a writer’s Original Character or Self-Insert character being shipped with my favorite. I went in to read stories with my fav ship—and only that. There have been the few exceptions to this—but me liking a Y/N or a fic with OCs is ultra rare.
Breakup: Similar to my thoughts on Unrequited Love. But taken up to a hundred. If there’s been a breakup between the main couple in the fic—and it’s not in the beginning exposition chapter where we don’t yet know enough information about these characters—in the middle or near the end, chances are I think the relationship is f*cked anyway and therefore lose interest in the main ship itself in the fic. Even if they get back together at the end, I just think, “Honey…you can do so much better than him/her.” Which is why I usually don’t like reading breakups between the main couple in my fics. (And if the breakup is because the MC or Love Interest is in a precarious situation and they think pushing them away is the best way to protect them, it’s a cliché that makes me roll my eyes because it’s been so overdone and ugh, why pretend to be awful INSTEAD OF COMMUNICATING?)
Body Swap: …It depends SO MUCH on the execution. I cringe so hard if a character (usually the guy in the body of a girl) is feeling up their developed chest like a perv. There’s only a handful of Body Swap stories that do this trope well. If two characters are swapping bodies, I want to read about how they’re trying not to OOC (lol) and see how this body swap impacts the story and cast of characters in any meaningful way.
College AU: I’ve long since graduated from college. Nuff said. Might give a fic a try if it’s well-written or a short PWP (it is what’s written on the tin) but, as a working adult, reading about petty school drama wears on my patience. There has to be plot to keep me invested. Might also read if it dives into college controversies or campus scandals—but the suspense has to be executed well. Most of the time, it works if there’s some kinda big mystery like there’s been a crime committed. Because now you have a whodunnit mystery. And that’s so much more interesting than reading about students studying and doing homework, going to parties, crushing on the professor (also, here, yikes…if you want me to turn my brain off and not think about the real life implications (the teacher’s immediate suspension (hopefully) and losing their teaching privileges and license), you gotta reel me in with the plot or characters), or the typical student college experience.
Gen Fic: It’s bland, milquetoast, mid and forgettable. It’s like sucking out all the fun elements out of a fic—and that’s not my idea of a good time. I think the only way to pull this off is if it’s a Character Study fic.
Tier 5 (F Level)
High School AU: Give me real men or women; get out of here with the kiddy stuff. I’m outside the age range to be able to enjoy this. As a working career-woman, I really don’t want to spend my free time reading about minors and teen romance and teen drama. And if there’s adult content, sorry, just—no. My brain more often than not associates it to underage s3x—and it squicks me out. It’s also so much harder for me to suspend my disbelief that this inexperienced kid from high school is like this super genius hacker or ultra cover model beauty whom grown wo/men salivate over. (Because…god no, I DON’T want to read about a minor’s “milky thighs” or “coquettish voice.” They’re, like, 14-16 y/o. Who wants to read about a predator who has designs on a teenager?) Also, unless it is at the hilarious peak levels of highschool romcom like Kaguya-sama: Love is War but in fanfiction form, reading about two high school students crushing on each other is 99/100 times so boring and milquetoast to me. I am not the target audience for this trope.
Non-Con: The real life implications ruin any chance for me to want to do anything with this trope. Consent is king, y’all. Non-con is a personal squick—and therefore I will not read if it’s what’s gonna happen between the main couple no matter how sweet and regretful the ML or FL acts after the act. It’s r@pe; I do not find SA and being forced sexy in any way. The moment I see that there’s non-con between the main couple, that’s ruined any chances of me enjoying that ship in the fic. (The only exception I can think of for this is if the ML/FL was mind-controlled or didn’t have autonomy over their body due to some kinda magic shenanigans. Or if it’s non-con framed as a horrifying traumatic experience between a character and the unimportant cannon fodder who’s there in the story to be punished as a villain and won’t be forgiven in any way.) I will not seek it out if I see a fic’s been tagged with this. And if I encounter surprise non-con in my reading, I will immediately drop the fic.
Unhappy Ending: I have a glass maiden heart. I tear up easily when characters die or suffer in a book. I don’t want to get emotionally invested in a story and its characters, only to end up with an Unhappy Ending at the end. It just feels so unsatisfactory, like I’d wasted my time on this long fic when I could’ve spent that time productively reading something else that has a much happier and better conclusion.
Crack Fic: Now, the one exception to this is if a writer jokingly says their story revolves around a crackship, but the writing’s so dang unbelievably good you don’t even think it’s a crackship in a crack fic (it’s a bonafide good story). But aside from that, 99 out of 100 times, I will not read crack fics. A crack fic is a writer’s attempt at humor. And humor is so subjective. What they find funny or entertaining might not be what I find funny or entertaining. Most of the time, it’s also of little substance and random and the writing is all over the place (which…y’know, I get it; I notice a lot of people mention they had a wild dream about this and that’s the reason why they’re writing a crack fic.) I’m happy that they’re writing what they find funny and I’m hoping it’s fun for them, but crack fics are not my cuppa tea.
Coffeeshop AU: It’s so mid and blah to me. It’s the most milquetoast Meet Cute out of all the Meet Cutes they could have chosen. I think the only one I recently read in, like, years, is because of a Art & Fic Exchange Bang I’d participated in. It’s so long ago. Basically unless it’s a stalker or secret identity or psychological horror story to make it interesting, I’d rather read anything else than a bland Coffeeshop AU.
Next Generation: Similar to how I regard OC Fics or OCs in general. I’m here to read fanfiction to read about canon characters of a show or book. I did not come here to read about a writer’s cast of Original Characters or Self-Insert characters. If 99% of the fanfic is about the OCs who are the sons and daughters of the canon characters, I just won’t read it. Won’t touch it. Won’t come anywhere near it. They might as well have written an original story of their own instead of a fanfic. (But 99/100 times, it’s poorly written and you can tell it’s written by a younger writer…eeesh. The good thing is, the more they write, the more practice they’re getting, so the better their writing will be.)
Bonus (F Level)
Cheating/ NTR: my brain automatically associates irl with this—and I find it despicable. The 1% chance I would read this trope is if the MC/ Love Interest is shown the consequences of their actions and the story promises that the person who’s been cheated on breaks up with them. Or if it’s a Mindlessly Self-Indulgent PWP oneshot—so I know to turn my brain off and lower my usual standards coming in.
Harem Fic: It’s Love Triangle—but taken up a notch. It’s so hard to write stallion (er0tica) protags that come across as endearing and not a playboy scummy f*ckboi. It annoys me if I’ve developed attachment to a ship or character and am interested in their relationship development (my waifu or husbando), but the story suddenly shifts to Side Character No.50 whom I couldn’t give two hoots about. The only exceptions to this, for me to keep reading a harem fic, is 1) if I like the storytelling, worldbuilding, and/or protagonist or main ship that makes it worth it. It’s very rare but there have been handful of writers who have actually made a harem where I care for and like ALL of the waifus. 2) I also enjoy harem dramas where the MC face-slaps every love rival, evil concubines, white lotus conniving mistresses, jealous queen/ mother, etc—and gets The Wo/Man.
Fanfiction Tropes (Writer Edition)
I’m much more open-minded writer usually 😅, so I’m usually open to try almost anything—but my criteria of tropes I will write for the story depends on my mood and the story’s premise. They usually have to pose some relevancy to the fic (which depends on its premise and characters) and satisfy my want to contribute something fresh/ interesting to the fandom if I decide to write that trope.
The biggest two changes are: 1) I’d move most of these tropes up into Always Down to Write and a few into If the Plot Calls for It. I’d also probably reorder a couple tropes if I look at them from a writer’s perspective (left ➡️ right, arranged from tropes I feel strongly about ➡️ the tropes I consider mid and don’t hold much strong opinions about). 2) I’d change the categories to:
Always Down to Write tier (probably 90% of these)
If the Plot Calls for It, or if I’m Curious and Want to Try Experimenting with It tier (I typically don’t go out of my way to read these, but would be willing to challenge myself and see what the writing experience would be like)
You’d Never Catch Me with My Pants Down Writing It tier (fun fact: there’s only maybe 4 or 5 of these I’d put here)
If you happen to be a writer whose tropes fall into ones I do not like and you know I’ve gushed about your fic before, know that you were one of the rare exceptions and I hope knowing this makes you happy. ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

Ok, time for the long and probably incoherent reaction to what I saw. Just parts of the story mode, a bit of character endings though I tried to avoid it, and a bit of the menus and stuff. Under the cut
For reference, I started at what seemed to be Ashrah’s chapter and went until Kuai Liang’s. Conveniently my favs!
The girl was indeed Khameleon!! And she looks so pretty! If I had any doubts I needed the dlc pack, they’re gone now
The dlc (non guests) and kameos seem all to be un story mode? I wasn’t expecting for this. This is nice
Jerrod is in Ermac! That was it, right?? He’s there! We always knew but I don’t think we had anything as explicit as he calling for Sindel
(Then again it wasn’t actually said so it may end up being contradicted by something I didn’t see)
So Liu Kang’s plan to avoid shit was making the bad guys he nobodies. That was smart. Or would have been had it worked. Quan Chi isn’t even a demon anymore
(I bet it’s not a coincidence Shao was born disabled too, huh)
You know Shang is good when you want to punch his face when he is just standing there. This Shang is very good
Reptile ate a bug!!! I got one prediction right!! I really wanted him to do it!!
I may have to redo that poll now that Baraka is an Edenian. It’s only fair
Kenshi and Johnny are so gay. I was neutral on the ship and I didn’t see the beginning but what I saw was enough for me to get it
Talking about gays, my favorite scene was Mileena and Tanya obviously flirting and Kitana being like “no she has her vows!!” and Mileena asking who told her. Girl. You are not as discreet as you think you are
Only now I see what you guys were saying about Bi-Han’d voice. Not gonna lie I find it sexy
I know that Lin Kuei chapter was probably a disappointment to everyone and while I would also have liked for Bi-Han to be less of a dick but it’s Mortal Kombat, guys, the characters don’t usually step out of their boxes often. His box is of a bad guy. The chapter was pretty much what we all could have expected. In fact, I think everything there was successfully predicted without any leaks
That being said, it was hilarious that you could see the gears turning in Bi-Han’s brain as soon as he saw the money. I never saw him as someone that cared much about money. Power, yes, obviously, but not money. Then again I best know him after death and I guess money doesn’t matter when you’re dead
Kuai got the scar!! And I think that only after seeing it my brain finally accepted that that man is really Kuai Liang. Like, I knew it, and I think he was always called by his name, but he looks so different that it hadn’t really clicked. Until the scar
Smoke is lovely
Holy shit, Havik
They mentioned Sektor and Cyrax and since a lot of other kameos are in the story, I guess they likely are. So… are they just cybers from the start? Are we in the middle of the cyber initiative?? Can I have hopes of seeing them in human form??
(Kameos have skins, btw!! And gear!!)
There’s more that I am certainly forgetting, but let’s end this with Kenshi in sunglasses from the tower ending. He looks so nice
Tumblr media
Anyway since this post will likely get more views than the last one because of the tags, I will say it again: if anyone can tell me where to watch the whole thing, I will love you forever

Ⓐ Here for my fav ship 🏃🏼‍♀️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
Huehuehue ❤️ and also thanks for being here Lina, I really appreciate that 😭
Somewhat nsfw content below the cut (nothing explicit, but it's only fair to warn those who wish to avoid the content altogether). Additionally, suggestive content and explicit will be tagged as #nsfw-ish and #nsfw on this blog, so block those tags if you wish to avoid them!
Send me Ⓐ and my muse will rate yours
Attractiveness:
repulsive || hideous || ugly || not attractive || unappealing || not unattractive || meh || no preference || ok || mildly attractive || nice looking || cute || adorable || attractive || pleasant on the eyes || good looking || hot || sexy || beautiful || gorgeous || hot damn || would tap that || perfect || godlike || holy fuck there are no words
Mishiro: He's pretty nice to look at, with and without his veil on. I had no idea he had such a pretty face though. You can imagine my surprise when I saw it, haha~
Either way, it was a little embarrassing... That I was so, uh, I guess the word is awestruck just at the looks.
Personality:
grating || irritating || frustrating || boring || confusing at best || awkward || unreasonable || psychotic || disturbing || interesting || engaging || affectionate || aggressive || ambitious || anxious || artistic || bad tempered || bossy || charismatic || appealing || unappealing || creative || courageous || dependable || unreliable || unpredictable || predictable || devious || dim || extroverted || introverted || egotistical || gregarious || fabulous || impulsive || intelligent || sympathetic || talkative || up beat || peaceful || calming || badass || flexible
Mishiro: Truth be told, I find him somewhat annoying at times. But he's somehow always interesting at the same time. Besides, he's incredibly intelligent and well-informed, and he is kind of cool when he wards off people with a simple look of disdain~
I'll have him know that's not gonna work on me, though~
How likely they would have sex with them:
not if they were the last person on earth and the world was ending || fuck no! || never || no way || not likely || not sure || indifferent || I’m asexual || maybe || probably || it depends || fairly likely || likely || yeah sure || yes || would tap that || hell yes || fuck yes! || wishing that could happen right now || as many times as possible || we are already having sex
Mishiro: Ahhh, well... This is embarrassing, but... I can't say I haven't considered it? Because I have... And I think it's a possibility depending on where our relationship is headed?
My God, I'm so awkward for no reason. Usually I have no trouble talking about such matters... Is it getting hotter in here?
Level of Friendship:
never in a million years || worst of enemies || enemies || rivals || indifferent || neutral || acquaintance || friendly toward each other || casual friends || friends || good friends || best friends || fuck buddies || bosom buddies || practically the same person || would die for them || true friends || my only friend ||
Mishiro: It's... kind of strange, honestly. I am not sure whether we tolerate each other or... In a weird way, get along? I guess that lands us in sort of kind of friend territory? Haha, I'm honestly not sure.
First impression of them:
I hate them so much || I don’t like them || I don’t trust them || they annoy me || they’re weird || I’m indifferent || meh || they seem alright || they’re growing on me || truce || I think I like them || I like them || I’m not sure if I trust them || I trust them || they’re cool || they’re genuine || I think we’re going to get along || I really like them || I think I’m in love || oh fuck they’re hot || I love them
Mishiro: I'm going to be honest, when I first saw him, he absolutely got on my nerves with his remarks. Condescending and even rude, I didn't think we would make it past the first hour...
But... The way he talked about his homeland and how devoted he is to his duties and home is... Admirable, at the least.
Current impression of them:
I hate them so much || I don’t like them || I don’t trust them || they annoy me || they’re weird || I’m indifferent || meh || they seem alright || they’re growing on me || truce || I think I like them || I like them || I’m not sure if I trust them || I trust them || they’re cool || they’re genuine || I think we’re going to get along || I really like them || I think I’m in love || oh fuck they’re hot || I love them
Mishiro: I'm, again, not sure where this whole thing is headed... But I can say he still manages to be annoying every once in a while. At the same time, he's much more knowledgeable and dedicated than I first thought. And much smarter than I first thought...
Everything is so complicated about him, and it's kind of fun to see his reaction to certain things I do and say~ who knows? This might be even going somewhere more fun that now, haha!
How good of a kisser:
worst kisser ever || terrible || bad || awkward || just okay || alright || pretty good || good || makes me moan || excellent || exciting || oh god they’re good || I dream about it || fucking amazing || absolute perfection || we haven’t kissed
Mishiro: We haven't touched lips just yet, but I do wonder how it will feel... Sometimes I linger on that thought a little too much-
Ahhh, I really need to stop talking now unless I want to embarass myself even more!

I am going to be predictable and ask you 003 for Yates, but also, just to spice things up - 003 for Jo as well <3
OK EHEHEHEE be prepared this might be super long.
yates-
how i feel about this character- yates is my everything. he’s so funny and so sad and so relatable i genuinely can’t put into words how much i care about him. i project onto him really hard he’s legitimately just ogh. oughg
romantic ships- really just benton tbh, i think they really have a great dynamic that’s a perfect mix of genuinely healthy and hilarious banter, earnest care for one another, and gut wrenching angst. one of my fav things about them is how much they say without actually saying anything. right from the get go (honestly forget which episode it’s in but one of yates’ first) he’s missing and unit doesn’t know where he is, and benton asks the brig and there’s such deep worry in his voice and eyes idk. i was sold from that point on. there’s many other moments i could talk about but yeah they’re so fucking good and a really interesting show of two characters who clearly care about each other but are not able to adequately express it in their work setting imo. also i have a theory that the tom yates is dating in PROSE happy endings is tommy from planet of the spiders just cause it seems like the truth to me and they’re ok but not like benton/yates.
fav nonromantic relationship- YATES AND JO. you know this. i’m so insane about them they have such a close loving friendship it’s so cute. they’re almost dating but he’s gay so they’re not dating it’s really real. they care about each other so much i’m obsessed with them. also such a small moment but when jo checks the time on yates’ wristwatch in the dæmons. it’s so cute they function as 1 entity sometimes
unpopular opinion- i don’t know if enough people care about yates for there to be popular/unpopular opinions about him tbh. that being said maybe that i absolutely see where he’s coming from with the operation golden age thing. like being not-fully-recovered from violently painful and traumatic brainwashing and being approached by a group claiming to be trying to save the environment, anyone would do what he did imo. also the fact that he was fully prepared to die, maybe even expecting it, maybe even wanting it, makes it really hard for me to understand how people see him as a heartless villain in that scenario. like nah bruh
something i wish had happened in canon- i guess maybe just more content. even when he played a major role in stories, he didn’t get much screentime, and his struggles were very infrequently focused on. i would have liked to see a bit more care put into the depth of his character (in an overt sense, cause it’s definitely there in subtext/implications/throwaway lines)
crossover ship- tbh i don’t do crossover ships, i just don’t get it
jo-
how i feel about this character- MY FUCKING GIRL. jo. jo. god. she’s genuinely my everything, and my second fav doctor who character closely after yates. it takes another kind of likability for an entire episode to basically come down to jo being such a loving and selfless person that her pure kindness destroys the sci-fi equivalent of the devil. she’s just so fucking good. also it’s hilarious how dumb she is but it still doesn’t dictate her character. yes she’s stupid, but that’s a trait that’s sometimes good, sometimes bad. she has other traits and skills that balance it out. she’s pretty much the world to me.
romantic ships- ok they never met but i’ve always loved the idea of jo and liz. i think their personalities really balance out perfectly, and they’d have a hilarious and adorable dynamic- jo being very forward and openly sweet and liz sort of being out of touch and closed off, trying not to let her feelings show. i also kind of like cliff and jo. i hated it initially cause her exit is so… 😕 like it is in character for her to marry a guy she just met but idk how i feel about her dropping everything and leaving all her friends for his scientific endeavors, it seems out of character. however, i think they’re funny together and i love the idea that everyone at unit hates cliff.
fav nonromantic relationships- YATES AND JO AGAIN!!!! but since i already talked about it it’s also worth mentioning jo and benton, who are just fucking adorable friends (especially in the three doctors, hugging and holding hands when they’re nervous, it’s so cute and silly). also jo and the doctor are the father daughter dynamic of a lifetime and the scene in time monster when they’re in jail and he tells her the story of how he started seeing the world in color has made me cry before.
unpopular opinion- again idk how many opinions i know. i think a popular hc is that she’s a lesbian which is so unreal to me she’s the most bisexual character of all time. BUT that’s a very little one that i don’t really have that strong feelings about. i guess people often think she’s sort of a typical damsel-type companion which is so far from true, she’s such a whole character with such a fleshed out personality with strengths, weaknesses, interests, and feelings. i will never understand the argument that jo is a weak character.
something i wish had happened in canon- honestly i thought she was a really well done character with great relationships with everyone she interacted with. i genuinely think the only thing that could really improve the viewing experience when it comes to jo is a couple more seasons tbh, although i completely get and respect manning not wanting to do the show anymore after delgado passed away
crossover ship- again. maybe i’m missing something but i don’t really get it

May I please have the companions of New Vegas (Arcade especially, he's my fav 🥰), reacting to the courier that has a bad knee? Like they had to turn old Brotherhood tech into a brace and they sometimes have a hard time with stuff. They're still badass and chaotic but some people think they'll pick on the "easy target". Thank you so much please take your time!!
...Well, I certainly did take my time. I'm sprinkling in some prompts from my backlog as well as answering new ones, so I'm very sorry to whoever sent this in before my recently-ended hiatus.
Raul, on some level, feels a sense of weary kinship with the Courier, never complaining when they struggle or need to take breaks more often than most- he's just grateful for the frequent opportunities to get off his feet himself. "What've we got between us, boss? One working knee? Ah, I can see Caesar shaking in his boots already."
Boone makes the mistake of underestimating the Courier, relegating them to spotter duty- it's only when they prove that they're more than capable of taking care of themselves that his attitude begins to shift toward grudging respect. "NCR would have drummed you out, but... Okay. I guess you can take point from now on."
Veronica, predictably, thinks the Courier's brace is just the coolest shit ever. She tinkers with it whenever she has the opportunity, adjusting it and making upgrades- even if the Courier has to reel in some of her more... outlandish ideas. "Ooh, what if we put in a missile launcher? Like, you could flex, and- No? Okay, I'll meet you in the middle and install rocket boosters instead- Come on, at least let me paint flames on it!"
Cass simply doesn't touch on it much, figuring that her heart problem gives her little room to talk. Around the campfire one night, though, after a little too much whiskey, she does point out the grim humor in them both having potentially deadly conditions. "You know what's fucked up? Anyone could take us both out with a goddamn pothole. You'd trip like a baby bighorner, and then I'd drop dead from the shock. Just... watch where you step."
Arcade, despite the Courier's insistence that they're fine, really, can't stop himself from worrying. Anytime they make a stop, he pulls them aside to fuss over their knee, and the much-dreaded tiny rubber mallet soon becomes a fixture in their relationship. "You know, despite all the oblique historical allusions and self-deprecation, I am a medical professional. If I can't even help you, how am I going to help Freeside?"
Lily, dimly remembering facing a similar problem in her former life, decides to help in any way she can. Ultimately, what she ends up with is a walker crudely fashioned from a shopping cart, utterly unusable for anyone who's not a super mutant... but it's the thought that counts, right? "HERE YOU GO, DEARIE. NO NEED TO THANK ME, IT'S WHAT GRANNIES DO!"

he also found out that you're into anime too
he may try and quiz you to test how into games/anime you are
his eyes light up and his heart pounds but he plays it cool
after a long interrogation conversation, he asked if you would meet him back at the cafe next week
he lent you the latest issue of a light novel that you never got around to reading
now he would have an excuse to see you again
a few months later one of your favorite animes was being played in the theatre once so you both went on a date to see it
if its a sappy rom-com he will 100% deny that he cried and brush it off as an eyelash caught in his eye
but he totally did
to be fair you did too
though he may prefer light novels over anime most times
he will totally sit down at watch the new season of an anime you two enjoy together
prepare for a brain malfunction if you tell him you're into cosplaying
"oh yeah I cosplayed them a year ago"
"y-you wouldn't happen to have any pictures, w-would you?"👀"
*cue nosebleed*
"That's it, I've found my soulmate" he says he's kidding but actually means it
ANYWAY
him being a weeb
Ichiro is also well versed in rhythm games
he will tell you if your waifu/husbando is trash or not
you both have your own little superstitions and rituals you do before gacha pulls
you might use a certain finger to click the screen because that's the lucky one
Ichiro turns the volume up and closes his eyes before clicking
"What no way!! CLICK MY SCREEN! YOU'RE LUCKY TODAY!"
"AHHH thank you y/n! Look at them! They're so cute!"
you both marvel over the cute characters
he is totally impressed by the songs you can do on pro/master
"NO WAY A FULL COMBO?!?!! You're amazing!" 😍
he will totally challenge you to see who can get a better score
but you always win
he did come close a few times
but gets flustered and flubs it up at the end when you're watching over this shoulder
he finds it cute when you're humming along to the songs while DESTROYING the beat map
Bonus+
*you unbox a package left on the doorstep to find a scanty cosplay* "Ichiro, what is this?!?" "What? I thought you would look cute in it" ;p "I'm not dressing up as your favorite idol!" "wh- babe why not?!" :"( "ok maybe..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jiro Yamada
Like Ichiro, Jiro is a big nerd too
you two met in a soccer match of all places
you were taking a break during halftime when you quoted a line from some weird obscure anime
"No way you watch ___ too? I thought I was the only one!"
you haven't seen each other before because you're on different teams from rivalling schools
after the game he gives you his number then the rest is history
you two end up messaging each other all night talking about other animes and games you enjoy
he likes sports animes along with action and adventure
you also found out he plays rhythm games too
after a while, he'll invite you over to the Yamada household and show you his collection of light novels and games
"There's more where this came from, my big bro is a bigger nerd than I am."
you'll sit down on his bed and show each other your cards and play a few songs
"Jiro why is your tap sound louder than the music!?!?"
"I need to hear the beats or I'll fail the stage!!"
He might challenge you to see who can get a higher score
you both play on hard
but you're pretty evenly matched
"Haha! That's a point for me, y/n!"
"No fair! I don't know that song very well..."
If you don't have the best gacha luck Jiro will cry with you during your loss
he's not much better...
"NOOOO I PULLED THE WORST ONE"
and because of that, this boy spends all of his allowance on gacha...
"Jiro, don't tell me you actually bought a gacha pass..."
"I SPENT ALL OF MY GEMS TRYING TO GET THEM SO I HAD TO!"
"JIRO!!!"
"Y/N PLEASE, I NEEDED THEM!!" (╥_╥)
Bonus+
"Here Jiro I got you this." He excitedly opens the package. "No way! A ___ Figure??!" "They're your favorite right?" "YESS" He sets the figure down and bear hugs you. "Thank you y/n, I'll treasure this forever!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saburo Yamada
Saburo picked up anime from his brothers
they would all watch action animes together as kids
until Saburo started a fight with Jiro and they tried to one punch each other out of existence
"HEY GUYS CUT IT OUT YOU'RE NOT FRIKKIN SAITAMA"
ahem. moving on...
Saburo is a nerd too
but he may be a bit more casual (in his own way)
he spotted you playing a rhythm game in the corner of the hall during lunch break
"Is that _____? I play ______"
"Oh really? Whos your favorite?"
"What? you like them?!? You have no taste..."
"W-what?! Shut up! their cards always have good stats!"
"But look how pretty this one is!"
you two quickly become friends and meet up every lunch and discuss things like your methods to preserve gems
Saburo likes making charts and spreadsheets to predict what event will be next and what characters are featured
"Haha! look y/n I totally called it!"
He likes collecting cards and comparing the stats
cause that's fun too I guess :/
He must assemble the best possible unit
I can see you two having competitions to see who can get the best score
or who can rank higher in an event
Saburo is very good at analyzing the beat map at first glance
he will also point out patterns he sees to try and help you understand the rhythms
he usually plays on hard and pro
while you do pretty well on normal or hard
he likes a good action/fantasy anime
but he likes sci-fi too
maybe even mystery
he was nervous asking you over to his place to watch anime
because you suggested a slice of life rom-com
does this mean he makes a move or you just watch it together and that's it O_o
Bonus+
"Yes! New high score! Y/n, did you see that?" You giggle. Good job Saburo. You lean over to kiss his cheek then see the smoke coming out of his ears. "Y-y/n!" *blush blush* "Hehe, you're so cute when you're nerding out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Samatoki Aohitsugi
Rio invited Samatoki out to a neat cafe because they offered cool exotic blends
When they walked in Samatoki was intrigued spotting your crazy colored hair and tattoos from the corner of his eye
which was weird cause that's not his type
or maybe it was
After ordering the coffee and sitting down Rio noticed that he was distracted
"I see you staring, why don't you go over and talk to her?"
"I wasn't staring! But there's just something about her..."
you were sitting in the corner of the cafe reading manga when he approached you a few minutes later
"uh hey, I like your tattoos"
"Oh thanks! Do you watch___ too?"
*casual panic* "Oh yeah totally, what are you reading?"
You knew he was faking it but continued anyway
"Eh, what's the difference?" 😮 "The difference is--"
He didn't know much about what you were saying but he loved watching you talk about something you were obviously passionate for
through an hour or so of conversation, you realized you both had more in common than you thought
he asked if you would like to do something like this again and gave you his number
You were happy to explain plots of random animes and games to him
Samatoki may not get the appeal but he likes seeing you happy
You go on a few dates and make your relationship official
he's absolutely fascinated by you and your nerdiness
"BABE!!!" "What is it?! Are you ok!?" "I JUST GOT A SSR CARD OF (insert favorite character here)"
Tch, *rolls his eyes. "That's good, right?" "LOOK HOW CUTE THEY ARE!"
he may get a little jealous watching you fawn over you your fav
"Hmmph, why would you want a fictional character when you have a real man right here?"
*author sobs* :")
you let him try a song on normal difficulty
but it is still hard for him
"What the hell! Why are these notes coming at me so fast?!"
He doesn't pick up any manga or light novels
but he likes watching anime with you though
preferably a good action and or adventure one
he may become more interested when the female lead shows up on screen
hey, eyes up here buddy >:(
he won't say it but he secretly likes romcoms
maybe cause Nemu used to watch them growing up
I can see him getting so invested he'll yell at the characters
"Are you stupid?? She's trying to confess to you! Moron..." he huffs
(he does this with cooking shows too)
Bonus+
"Samatoki come on! The next episode of ___ is airing! You rush into the bedroom. "Hey, have you seen my pho-" "Shut up, I'm trying- to win." You laugh hysterically at him stealing your phone to get a full combo. "You got this babe, I believe in you!"
Thank you for reading!
Detention time
Pairing: Dean Winchester x fem!reader
Summary: They're high school students, Reader gets a detention and Dean, not wanting to be alone, joins them.
Warnings: Some insults, but nothing bad. Just two baddies idiots fooling around in school.
Word count: 2.4k
A/N: My very first spn fic,,, I'm really excited about this!!!!! Although, a person with whom I talk of spn, would be surprised that my first fic isn't with Sam as he's my fav 😂, don't get me wrong, I love Dean too, but Sam- 👁️v👁️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"y/l/n, detention." A male voice announced which had basically become the anthem of the class considering how many times it was told, to her, or even, by the other troublemaker of the class, known as: Dean Winchester.
They both were called the detention duo, whether they'd have detention the same day or not, they'd always somehow have one in the same week.
But that day, only y/n had gotten one. The reason? Calling the teacher a moron, incompetent -and a bitch-, but she didn't hear it.
She'd probably have a nice trip to the principal, along with a possible one week exclusion.
She was...well known for her original words that would definitely be followed by a detention as soon as it was told.
Let's say that...she had her own behaviour that would make her ‘unique’.
This could kind of be seen as a show to the class, mostly from y/n's side, as all the teacher could say was a bit of complaining, and the famous sentences well known, to annouce the detention.
It was definitely funnier when coming from the teacher y/n just called a moron.
For Dean, it'd depend.
Sometimes it would be because he had called them a pussy, or just because the teacher had decided that he had annoyed them too much for its liking.
He'd even have the talent of getting detention when he was out of class.
So, thinking it'd be fun to bring back the detention duo, Dean decided to add his own spice to the party, doing it with another one, who hated him as much he hated y/n.
Dean would usually annoy him on purpose, but that time he just did it without realizing it, it had basically become a habit that he wouldn't even think of doing it, he'd already be doing it.
Not really any of the class could have predicted it, even if it hadn't become surprising coming from him at some point.
The hour had almost gone by calmly, and just a few minutes before the end were left.
But when Dean's remarks, and the lack of these because he wasn't doing anything was enough to the teacher, soon the whole class knew what was coming.
And, as if Dean hadn't fallen deep enough, he finished his answer with 'bitch'.
The final touch.
"Winchester, since I guess that you seem to have free time, and have disrespectful behavior, you'll be joining Saturday's detention, with a small trip to the principal beforehand?"
"Sounds good."
Result; both found themselves on a Saturday, each sitting at a spot across the room, not really knowing what to do.
As much as they were known as a duo, and possibly friends, y/n didn't like him a lot.
She was...kinda friend with his brother, Sam, but never really talked with Dean, even if they’d both been in detention quite a few times.
But Dean, just…being Dean, actually wanted them to be friends. He had tried multiple times to, somehow, have a chat that would last longer than one minute, which failed until now.
Today might be a good shot, and he's gonna try again, even if she might not be open to it.
Detention were a loss of time, they'd give either give you a stupid paper -which, by the way, wasn't even checked-, so whether you'd do it or not, they didn't care.
Or, in this case, they'd just have someone watch over you, they would have a glance, go out for a bit, come back later, or literally at the end of the detention…which could be the case right now.
They had left god knows where, leaving the "detention duo" to themselves, which didn't change much.
Whether the guy watching them was here or not, the room was so silent that you could hear a door opening from across the hall, even the first floor.
“You’re still going to be on silent mode, as usual?” Dean asked, glancing at the girl. “You could at least say hi, be polite, you know?”
“Fuck off Winchester.”
“I said polite, not asshole mode.”
“Since when am I supposed to talk nice to you as if we were pals?”
“You don’t necessarily have to be friends with someone to be nice, it’s just basics.”
“Well, I don’t really give a fuck about your basics. What about that?”
“Woah, chill. I was just trying to be nice, which you aren’t.” He muttered.
“Oh, because you’re nice? Aren’t you sitting in detention with me right now for calling the teacher a bitch?”
“He deserved it, and you kind of did the same thing as me, let me remind you of that.”
“He also deserved it, but, did I deserve to be annoyed by you though?”
“No, but my plan was totally different, I didn’t want to annoy you, on the contrary.”
“Hm, it seemed like it to me.”
“It’s just you seeing things that way instead of what they really are.”
“Oh really? You’re kidding, right Winchester?”
“Why would I be?”
“You’re always here, saying shit, that at some point it’s kind of complicated to know if you’re being serious or not.”
“I hate to admit that, but you’re...right, but just in a way, not completely. I can be serious if asked to.”
“Oh, because you can be? I never found you serious once.”
“Are you saying that I’m a fool?”
“I never said that, you just assumed it yourself right now.” She spat.
“No, I was just trying to guess what you meant when you said that you didn’t find me serious, that is all.”
“Oh, you should have told me. I thought you were trying to ask me how I was seeing you, and I just told it."
“Did anyone ever tell you that you can be...quite indirect sometimes? No?”
“I’m just pointing out the truth, what I think. What’s wrong with that?”
“What is wrong, is that it’s not necessarily what people want to hear from you, especially when they’re being nice, like with me.”
“I didn’t notice you were trying to be nice, you’re such an ass with teachers and some nerds that I didn’t even think there was an ounce of sweetness in your head.”
Touché.
“Well uh...people can be...nice, just because they’re, not really nice to some, and can seem...a bit intimidating, it doesn’t mean they can’t be nice to others.” Dean blurted out, desperately trying to find arguments.
“You’re a dick Winchester, face it.”
“I wouldn’t go that far to the point of being categorized as a dick, but okay, I can be...mean.”
“You forgot one adjective.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“You sure?”
“...annoying.”
“There ‘ya go.”
“Is there anything else to add to the list of defaults you’ve noticed about me, or are you done?”
“Unless you want a four page long essay, I’m done...for now, at least.” Y/N said, tapping her pencil against the table. “Why? Do you want more? I can keep going, I have one week free.”
“No, I’m uh...I’m good.”
“Hm. I got nothing to talk about then, too bad.”
“There's a lot of stuff to say other than me.”
“Which is?”
“I don’t know. What we like, what we hate about these teachers, or even random stuff we have. I know you like to talk about me, but we can switch the subject.”
“Me, liking to talk about you? You’re kidding. You just annoyed me, and I responded to you.”
“You seem quite enthusiastic and well informed.”
“No, I was not.”
“If you say so.”
“There’s no ‘if you say so’, as I said, I was just splitting out facts.”
“...that, again, seemed to be interesting enough for you to waste five minutes.”
“I regret answering you in the first place now.”
“No, you don’t. You love talking with me, I know you do. You should feel honored to have Dean Winchester talking to you, I don’t do that with many people.”
“Honored what? You’re not a star, you’re just the school’s brat.”
“You’re not as innocent as I am, I could call you a brat too, but I’m staying polite.”
“Oh, because you were being polite? I didn’t notice, you should have told me, I would have tried to take things differently.”
“I’m being polite, since the beginning of the conversation. You just didn’t notice, as you said.”
“Okay, you were a bit more polite than usual.”
“That’s a great compliment, coming from you.”
“Probably the only one you’ll receive.”
“The only one? You sure? I’m kind of...handsome. So, you should have some things to tell.”
“Am I supposed to see it as a joke or not?”
“...it wasn’t a joke.”
“I thought it was, because you're mostly an ass to me, not a handsome guy.”
“I know you don’t make jokes usually, but I think it’s one, no? Come on, you can’t say I’m not as handsome as all of these actors you see at TV and all.”
“What am I supposed to say in that?”
“That you find me nice, and all, you know. I know you got lots of things to say.”
“No, and even if I did, why would you deserve to hear them?”
“Because it’s...about me? You had a lot of...not really nice stuff, so it shouldn’t be a problem to say the opposite, if you happened to think that way.”
“Do I look like I want to waste the week I have to say that?”
“Maybe.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Come on, I’m not asking for a whole week, just like...a few days?”
“That’s even worse.”
“Okay, one day.”
“Less worse, but not better.”
“You don’t even have one day to spare for your favorite classmate? I’m charming, funny, nice...sometimes, I’m cool to hang out with, I got a nice brother, and plus, as we’re both Winchesters, it’s even funnier. I’ll pull him out of his books and drag him outside.”
“If I do agree, do I get to drag him outside too? I have to warn him though, I won’t be delicate.”
“You get to drag him outside, I’ll even let you do it, from start to end.”
“Then, I guess I can spare some time out of the free week I have.”
“Yeah, we don’t give a single fuck about the assignments.”
“Sam will help us on the last day.”
“True, we can threaten him too.”
“For once, you have good ideas.” She pointed out.
“What can I say? I’m a Winchester, so that’s pretty logical for me to be talented, creative and smart.”
“I said that you have good ideas, that’s all. I didn’t ask for you to brag about yourself.”
“You tempted me, and...by the way, since we’ll be stuck together for a week, might as well become less formal?”
“You mean...with our names? Me calling you Dean, and you calling me y/n?”
“That’ll be a great start.”
“It’s a bit weird though. I’ve always been calling you Winchester, it’s weird to call you Dean all of a sudden.”
“See it as a small privilege, not that many people get that chance.”
“Do any other people get the chance of getting annoyed by you?”
“I’m not annoying, just like to chat a lot. Come on, y/n, it’s not that hard to call me by my name, you gotta get used to it to preserve your privilege.”
“You’re lucky that the only knives we have here are plastic ones, and totally harmless. I would have already stabbed you by now.”
“You’ll be way too sad without me here.”
“Not at all Dean.”
“I doubt so, y/n.”
“I’ll have Sam with me to replace you.”
“Nah, not even Sam can. I’m Dean Winchester, no one can replace me.”
“I spent a lot of time with Sam, and it was as nice as when I’m with you.”
“You mean, book talk? That’s not what I call fun.”
“It’s more interesting.”
“It’s boring.” Dean said.
“Boring is what I say when I happen to be with you, which is right now.”
“Nah, you had fun.”
“Yeah, 1%.”
“I’m sure it’s a bit more than that, we've been here for one hour already.”
“Okay, 1,000001%. Is that better?”
“Not really.”
“I was being nice by adding all of these zeros.”
“It made it just a bit worse. It should have been 50% at least.”
“50% is a bit too much, would have given 20% maximum.”
“I guess it’s better than 1%.”
“I’m being generous, I gave 19% more.”
“I better get a piece of paper to remember it, it’s quite rare coming from you, I’m honored.”
“Watch out, I might get back on my decision to waste my precious time with you.”
“Okay, okay, I’m going to be extra nice.”
“I’ll make sure to have my phone and record it, I might not believe it when I’ll happen to think about it a bit later.”
“I said that I was going to be nice, that applies for you too.”
“Fine, Dean.”
“See, it took one hour for us to get along, and for once, it wasn’t a bad detention. You even ended up calling me Dean.”
“If you say so, and yeah, it was better than usual. We should try to get another, but outside of the class, like being late three times when we get back next week, and maybe add something to not just get detention.”
“Yeah, ‘could be nice. Our parents are going to be pretty pissed off at that.”
“To be honest, did we ever care about that?”
“Not once, as long as I can recall.”
“Exactly.”
“It might get us kicked out at some point.”
“I never liked studying anyway, I won’t mind getting out of here.” She admitted.
“Who likes that?”
“Sam.”
“Oh, he’s always been a nerd. But, a nice one, and not really annoying.”
“Yeah, he’s kind of like us, but...a bit more strict. Bet 10 dollars he’s going to lecture us.”
“Bet.” Dean answered.
“Okay deal. Now let’s get the fuck out of here.”
“They’re going to annoy us for that.”
“They said we’re out for a week, we’re just leaving early.”
“I guess it’s okay then.”
“Hell yeah it is. We have one week to waste ahead of us.”
“I’ve never enjoyed an exclusion that much before.”
“That’s normal, I wasn’t there to make it fun. Now we’ll spend these together, it’ll be a nice one instead of a useless one.”
“Let’s get to it then.” Dean announced, as he crossed the door after her, sneaking out to walk in the direction of the hallway.
Guess that detention wasn’t that bad after all.
hello may i dump every idea i'm too lazy to write right here -they are very unoriginal, do what you want with them. Plus, you might not like them at all since my fav is hashirama and i guess urs is madara (and I used to prefer him too, but something in me changed when i went to look up the tag madara/hashirama on pixiv and discovered smithsan- such a great artist. okay i'll stop telling my life, but honestly it made me understand how ships worked so much, to switch points of view like that. anyway)
- three words: mokuton cancer cells (but it shows up before he's an old man)
- european medieval au (totally the idea of akatsukiarts but i'm shamelessly asking a talented author to write it :D)
- u probably prefer bottom madara -i've read all ur fics lolol and have i tell i love them all? cuz i do (which i totally get! we can't choose which one we're projecting one) buttttt may i ask for kinda nasty dom madara and obedient sub hashirama? (i'm again going on a tangent but it's so funny how people get "vibes" for who is top or bottom when it doesn't work like that. I mean yeah, u can get clues, but you could turn those clues totally upside down. The opposite situation is soft dom hashirama and bratty sub madara and it fits them just as well - according to me, because opinions are personal-. But that's what i'm getting at. It usually goes from "the sexuality u feel fits the character" -> finding the clues indicating it fits the character. And not the opposite direction. ANYWAY. I'M TALKING TOO MUCH.)
- tajima lives au; what does it change? -probably nothing. I'd like to hear ur opinion hehe (or worse; butsuma lives old au. what happens?)
- do u write hashitobi? i feel like i read one of urs but i might be confusing with another author. Anyway, idea: yandere/dark tobirama (honestly i feel like im so predictable it's not even funny, sorry for those awful ideas this is the worst)
- au where it's tobirama with the mokuton and hashirama (so without mokuton, to be clear).... well u tell me, but i doubt he would fit the scientist role.
okay, i think im done because the rest is even worse and u probs won't use them but here we go! do what u want with these! thank you for the opportunity to share ideas with u! bye now i'm going to hide in a ditch somewhere. urgh why did i write that. :(
Oh Anon, this is a treasure island or a minefield of ideas depending how you look at it!
But first of all, I have to say that if I have to pick one favourite, it is Hashirama and I do project to him maybe a tad too much. That’s why I like to write him from different aspects and see him suffer now and then. Let’s not dwell on this too much hehe.
(Smithsan is indeed a great artist!)
Mokuton cancer cells sounds way too sad! Not that I can’t see Hashirama turning into a tree or something, not knowing how he actually died and all that, but I’m not ready for it!
European medieval AU! Now that sounds a whole lot of fun, especially with some fantasy elements? Dark magician/warlock Madara and knight in shining armour Hashirama? But I do love akatsukiarts lovely arts there, will need to check them again. I fear this might be something longer winded than I currently have the capacity for atm!
I’m all for switching, but yeah, I do picture Hashirama toppier and Madara bottomier. Which makes bottom Hashirama all the more fun to write. Spice things up and all that! While S/D isn’t necessarily my cup of tea, I do like to play around with the dynamics. I actually really getting into the obedient sub Hashirama idea as I can clearly picture him struggling big time with that role, while Madara, I can equally see him struggling with being all dominant (though probably not with being nasty!). Anyhow, this can be gold for The Awkward Sex Scene I Always Wanted To Write, But Never Got Around To Do It.
I have maybe half a page started on a Tajima (and Butsuma) lives AU! It’s one where H&M managed to achieve peace pretty early on and their biggest concern is introducing the other as their boyfriends to their family. I wanted to write it for that one scene where Izuna tries to set Hashirama’s hair on fire with the Katon over family dinner as he can’t stand him having his hand over Madara. Not sure I’ll ever write it though!
I did on one (okay, two, it had a sequel) occasion wrote HashiTobi and I killed myself with it. I’m not saying never again but anything that comes to mind is rather sad and dark. (wow, you’re asking for Dark Tobirama and it’s Dark, who would have ever thought so.) Never wrote any misuse of Edo Tensei (bringing back Hashirama temporary) kind of story, so when I feel I’m in the mood I might go for it.
And nothing loads in my mind when I think about Tobirama and the Mokuton, but knowing me, this will wake me up one day 3 am hehe.
I’m really happy that you took the time to share all these ideas with me. I absolutely don’t promise anything, but I have two weeks before starting a new job and I plan to spend it as any responsible adult would, with playing video games and writing fanfic.
Wangxian modern au drabble where one of them gets a little jealous?
Ahhhh, okay, okay! I know this one isn’t everyone’s fav trope, but I personally don’t mind it as long as there is a healthy resolution to the jealousy. So yeah! That’s what I’m going to do here!
I’m also using this as an opportunity to explore one of my headcanons! Since “Wuxian” can translate to “no envy”, I think it would be neat if Wei Wuxian was just... completely immune to jealousy. Like, he doesn’t understand it at all. Which would naturally lead to conflict with Lan Wangji, the king of jealousy
Anyway... I hope you like it, anon!
Dating Lan Wangji is like a dream come true. Wei Wuxian has never been happier. Between their blossoming romance and getting to raise A-Yuan together, Wei Wuxian thinks his life might just be as perfect as it’s ever going to get.
A couple of months in, though, Wei Wuxian notices a strange little habit Lan Wangji has taken up. Or, rather, Jiang Cheng brings it to his attention.
Specially, the fact that Lan Wangji often bites the soft underside of Wei Wuxian’s wrist.
The first time it happened, Wei Wuxian had yelped and accused Lan Wangji of acting like a dog. But he didn’t tell Lan Wangji not to do it again, and sure enough, it became a thing between them.
Wei Wuxian thinks it odd, but charming. Lan Wangji is often both odd and charming.
It doesn’t occur to Wei Wuxian that the new behavior could be a response to something, until he notices that Jiang Cheng can predict, with alarming precision, exactly when Lan Wangji is about to chow down. Wei Wuxian knows this because Jiang Cheng always looks away right before it happens.
They’re at an end of the summer barbecue at the Jin-Jiang house when Wei Wuxian decides to determine, once and for all, what Lan Wangji’s biting means.
Most people have gathered by the grill to socialize, since it’s already getting a bit chilly outside. A-Yuan and A-Ling are chasing each other through the yard, with swords cut out of construction paper. Besides the kids and their guardians, the friends present include Jiang Cheng, Jin Zixuan’s three siblings, Qin Su’s girlfriend Zhao Zhiruo, Mian Mian, Wen Qing, Wen Ning, Lan Xichen and his wife Nie Yuyan, Nie Mingjue, and Nie Huaisang.
Wei Wuxian strategically waits for Lan Wangji to head back into the kitchen to grab them both another can of iced tea. As soon as his boyfriend leaves his side, Wei Wuxian rushes to Jiang Cheng.
“Hey, dearest Didi?” Wei Wuxian asks.
“Gross,” Jiang Cheng scoffs, “Don’t ever fucking call me that again. What do you want?”
“Tell me how you know when Lan Zhan is going to bite me.”
Jiang Cheng reacts predictably, which means he flinches away and scrunches up his face like he’s got a mouth full of lemon. “Excuse me, what?!”
“You know, when Lan Zhan does that thing.” Wei Wuxian demonstrates by nipping his own wrist.
Jiang Cheng’s nose scrunches up even further. “Ugh, you mean that gross power play thing he does? Why do you think I would even want to discuss that—“
“Power play?” Wei Wuxian is so lost.
They both spot Lan Wangji at the sliding glass doors to the patio. Jiang Cheng yanks Wei Wuxian close to whisper into his ear. “Try getting all cuddly with Wen Ning and see what happens.”
When Jiang Cheng releases him, Wei Wuxian is even more confused. What does an occasional bite to the wrist have anything to do with Wen Ning? And why did Jiang Cheng refer to it as a “power play”? A power play for what?
This obviously merits further investigation. Wei Wuxian decides he needs to find Wen Ning.
Wen Ning is a little off to the side, watching the children play. He has a soft smile on his face, which widens even further when Wei Wuxian throws an arm over his shoulders.
“Hey there,” Wen Ning says, “How are you enjoying the party?”
“It’s good,” Wei Wuxian replies, “How’s the apartment hunt going?” He and Wen Ning used to share, but ever since he moved into Lan Wangji’s place, Wen Ning has struggled to pay the rent all by his lonesome.
Wen Ning shrugs gently. “It’s not the best,” he admits.
An idea tickles the back of Wei Wuxian’s mind. He’s recently more or less moved into Lan Wangji’s room, leaving his own room empty night after night—
But the thought is only half formed, and then Lan Wangji swoops in, completely derailing Wei Wuxian’s train of thought.
“Your iced tea,” he says, and offers it to Wei Wuxian.
“Thanks,” Wei Wuxian says. He lets go of Wen Ning and reaches for the can, only to have his wrist snatched by Lan Wangji’s free hand. “Wha—“
Lan Wangji lifts the wrist to his mouth, gives it a kiss, and then a bite.
Wei Wuxian watches the teeth clamp down into his skin. The pressure is just enough that it kind of stings, right on the edge of pain. Lan Wangji’s teeth leave behind pale marks which fade after a few seconds.
Wei Wuxian glances off to where Jiang Cheng stands. He watches his brother roll his eyes and turn away.
Then Lan Wangji lets Wei Wuxian’s wrist go, and places the can gently into his slack palm. He holds the cold metal against Wei Wuxian’s racing pulse until he regains his senses enough to establish a firm grip on the tea.
It was just as Jiang Cheng said. Wei Wuxian had gotten “all cuddly” with Wen Ning, and then Lan Wangji bit him!
Wei Wuxian frowns. He decides he needs to experiment some more.
Wei Wuxian spends the afternoon trying different things. He finds excuses to become physically affectionate with others, and waits to see if Lan Wangji bites him.
So far, he’s found that physical affection is, in fact, the trigger. However, it doesn’t work with everyone.
Wei Wuxian can get as clingy as he wants with Jiang Yanli, Jiang Cheng, A-Ling, and A-Yuan, and Lan Wangji doesn’t bite him. In fact, any interaction he has with the kids seems to have the opposite effect. More often than not, it will prompt Lan Wangji to lean over and kiss his temple.
Some results are less conclusive. Jin Zixuan, Lan Xichen, and Nie Yuyan fall into this category. After contact with any of them, Lan Wangji will kiss his wrist, but no bite will follow.
The rest definitely produce bites. For some reason, Lan Wangji seems to bite the hardest when Wei Wuxian gets affection with Wen Ning, Wen Qing, Mian Mian, or Mo Xuanyu. Those four seem to be in their own category.
After dinner, Wei Wuxian tries to figure out some sort of pattern. Children earn him a kiss on the temple. That one is easy enough. His siblings have no effect whatsoever on Lan Wangji’s behavior. But, for some reason, Lan Wangji’s own sibling does, only he only prompts a kiss on the wrist.
It’s all rather puzzling, and Wei Wuxian is starting to think maybe it’s more random than he’s giving this strange behavior credit for.
But then Lan Wangji pulls Wei Wuxian aside, hand clamped tight on his wrist.
Wei Wuxian waits for a kiss or a bite, or both, but nothing of the sort happens. As soon as they are out of earshot of the others, his wrist is released.
“No more teasing,” Lan Wangji says.
“What?” Wei Wuxian’s head spins. His boyfriend sounds... angry? But he can’t think of any reason why.
“No more teasing,” Lan Wangji repeats.
That doesn’t help Wei Wuxian at all. Had he been teasing anyone? More than usual, anyway? He doesn’t think so. He rubs his wrist, which is getting a little sore after all of the biting it’s received. Over time, Wei Wuxian has learned that sometimes Lan Wangji needs to be asked clarifying questions, or else he’ll just keep repeating himself.
“Okay, so.... who am I teasing?” Wei Wuxian asks.
Lan Wangji’s eyes narrow. “Me.”
“You?” Okay, now Wei Wuxian is unsure if he’s dreaming. Has Lan Wangji been experiencing an entirely different barbecue?
“Me,” Lan Wangji repeats, “Making me jealous.”
“Jealous?” Wei Wuxian repeats the word, as if it’s foreign to him. In truth, it’s not an emotion he has much experience with. All his life, he’s tried to be grateful for what he has. It always felt selfish to wish for more.
“Yes. Jealous.”
Wei Wuxian watches his boyfriend. The gears in his head start to turn. It takes a second, and then Wei Wuxian suddenly understands everything.
“That’s what the bites are about?”
Lan Wangji’s face twists. His hand takes Wei Wuxian’s wrist again, lifts it to his mouth. But he still doesn’t kiss or bite. He just speaks into the sore skin there. “You... you just realized?”
“I guess so.” Wei Wuxian wonders if he’s dumb for not figuring it out sooner, or if Lan Wangji’s dumb for expecting him to figure it out at all.
“Yes.” Lan Wangji’s eyes dart up to Wei Wuxian’s face, but he continues to partially muffle his words against Wei Wuxian’s wrist. “When I get jealous... I want to remind myself.”
“Remind yourself of what?”
Lan Wangji’s eyes dart to the side. “That... you are mine,” he mumbles.
There’s a sharpness to Lan Wangji’s words that sends a delicious little spark of warmth down Wei Wuxian’s spine. He laughs nervously, startled by his body’s unconscious reaction. “Of course I’m yours,” Wei Wuxian blurts.
“Hence, the reminder.”
Lan Wangji’s voice is so husky... Wei Wuxian wants to kiss him. But that would be bad, right? They should probably talk about this.
“Right,” Wei Wuxian says, “But, when you say you get jealous... are you worried I’m going to cheat on you or something?”
“No.” Lan Wangji’s answer comes quick and firm. “You are a virtuous person. You would not cheat...” His voice trails off, and the ‘but’ goes unvoiced.
“But?” Wei Wuxian prompts.
“You could... fall for another,” Lan Wangji finishes, “Love someone else.”
Wei Wuxian barely holds back a snort. He knows it would be inappropriate, but the idea seems so outrageous to him! Who else would Wei Wuxian love, if not Lan Wangji?
“Lan Zhan,” Wei Wuxian says, “I’ve been in love with you since the first day we met. I didn’t know it at the time. I was young and I misunderstood my feelings for a long, long time. But now I look back at that time, and it’s so obvious to me! I’ve been in love with you since day one.”
Lan Wangji’s eyes lock onto his, as if searching his very soul.
“It’s true,” Wei Wuxian insists, feeling frantic, “Lan Zhan, do you know how many people I’ve gone out on a date with?”
The question seems to cause Lan Wangji physical pain. “A lot,” he grits out.
“That’s right! A whole lot. Mostly girls and in college even a couple of guys. And how many have I kissed?”
Lan Wangji’s breath hitches. He doesn’t reply, though.
“Only one!” Wei Wuxian is so desperate, and he knows his voice is climbing high because of it. But he needs Lan Wangji to know. Wei Wuxian feels like he’ll suffocate if Lan Wangji doesn’t understand. “I never kissed any of them, because I... I always got cold feet! And I never knew why. It just didn’t feel right. But with you, I didn’t hesitate. I’ve never hesitated with you! I think it’s because I’ve been holding out hope for you, this whole time!”
Lan Wangji does kiss Wei Wuxian then, right on the lips. It’s a little too rushed, and the angle isn’t quite right.
But Wei Wuxian feels the warmth of Lan Wangji’s breath on his lips, and the simple sensation melts away all of his hysteria. He kisses back, to remind himself. To remind himself of their deep bond.
Wei Wuxian thinks he may understand where Lan Wangji is coming from, after all.
They part soon after, both aware of the fact that they are outside, and that they have friends and family waiting nearby.
“Do you... dislike it?” Lan Wangji asks.
“Hmm?”
“The biting...”
“Oh.” Wei Wuxian pauses to think. It’s a good question to ask, actually. He knows if he says he dislikes it, that it won’t ever happen again. And Wei Wuxian suddenly really doesn’t want that.
“I don’t dislike it,” Wei Wuxian says, “I dislike thinking you don’t know... that you doubt my love.”
Lan Wangji gives him another, more brief kiss. “I’m sorry. I... don’t want to doubt. But it’s been so long.” His words come slowly, like he has to drag them, unwilling, from his heart. “All this time, I thought my love went unrequited. Ten years. Ten years of unrequited love.”
Wei Wuxian lets that sink in. He can’t imagine the pain. He’s been blissfully unaware of his own feelings this whole time, happy just to get Lan Wangji’s undivided attention once in a while.
Lan Wangji takes his silence the wrong way. “I’ll stop biting,” he says.
“No,” Wei Wuxian protests, “I like the biting. Please don’t stop the biting. But maybe...” A metaphorical light bulb flickers on within his mind. “In the future, can you only bite me when we’re alone?”
Lan Wangji blinks. “Alone?”
“Yes, alone.” Wei Wuxian smiles weakly. “You can even count them, the bites you want to give me. And then, while you bite me, and remind yourself that I’m yours, I’ll remind you, too. I’ll tell you just how much I love you. Over and over again, until you have no choice but to believe it.”
“Yes,” Lan Wangji breaths. He sounds incredibly in favor of the idea. “Yes, Wei Ying. I’d like that.”
“Good.” Wei Wuxian nervously peeks back towards the party. There is definitely at least one person pretending not to look at them. “How about one more kiss, and then we go back to the barbecue?”
Lan Wangji smiles, and nods. And then they kiss.
for the character ask meme: sauron?? >:3c
How I feel about this character: evil twink. terrible. i love him. for real tho i think fandom has woobified sauron to angband and back, and while i get people who are frustrated by us forgetting he’s a villain....like....he’s just so FUN, you know? he’s done so many things, he’s so complicated, why wouldn’t you want to play with what’s going on in his head? i know i do! there are days i want to just sit down and rewrite the entire legendarium from sauron’s POV, because he was there for all of it, causing trouble the whole time. my version of sauron is Evil And Loving It almost the whole way through - but he did it out of love, for melkor at first and then for himself, and while that’s no excuse for evil it’s a fascinating motivation.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: i mean, melkor, obvs. angbang’s probably the second biggest ship in the fandom after russingon, and it’s a GOOD ship. my particular flavor of angbang isn’t the abusive/controlling melkor kind, i like it when it’s reciprocated and sincere - though there’s still absolutely room for evil and possessiveness. idk, healthy(ish) angbang is just more interesting to me? like there’s gonna be a power dynamic there, but i’m so much more interested in mairon having almost equal footing in his relationship than him being some pawn of melkor - i think that makes the times where he has the harsh realization that he’s not equal, just almost equal, even more impactful. like, he can tell melkor “no” and melkor will listen - except when he doesnt. idk, i like that more than him being afraid of saying no at all. (though i certainly do enjoy other versions of angbang! this is just my favorite) Like, i think Sauron carries his love for Melkor through everything he does after the first age. At first he’s doing it all for Melkor, thinking about when he breaks his master out of the void, and then slowly starts to realize that wait, that might not happen. but he keeps going anyway, with melkor as his grounding for what he’s doing, as he becomes more invested in his own future.
THAT BEING SAID i also love silvergifting because im PREDICTABLE. again, my flavor of sauron is one that’s in love with melkor first and foremost and always intentionally planning to fuck celebrimbor over, but the trope of sauron being like “i’ll seduce Tyelpe into evil, it worked when Melkor did it to me” “didn’t Melkor fall in love with you though?” “SHUT UP” becomes Annatar in a way that he almost forgets who he used to be, which is also interesting, but i’m the kinda person who wants Sauron always consciously aware of every thing he does to Tyelpe-  I want him feeling guilty about it by the end, but, importantly, doing it anyway.
[cw rape] Sauron/Maedhros is also really fascinating to me, especially since it’s (almost) always nonconsensual... it’s a good reminder that sauron is at the end of everything evil and practically irredeemable. and i’m more interested in mae’s feelings on this ship than i am sauron’s, considering sauron is abusing him because melkor wants him to (and he probably wants to toy with maedhros too) and isn’t particularly apologetic about it. ALTHOUGH. sauron maybe fucking with Maedhros to the extent of actually pretending he cares, that he’s genuinely here for Mae - that is also some really fucked up interesting shit especially as foreshadowing for Silvergifting.... [that being said! i linked a fic up there that has consensual sauron/maedhros and oohhh boy is it good! heed the warnings, and it’s a modern AU ft. abusive!melkor, but definitely check it out if you’re interested in these two!]
I can get down on other Sauron ships (like him and the Nazgul, him and Ar-Pharazon) but most of those are Sauron playing a game of chess - but, critically, not making the same mistakes he made with Tyelpe. he keeps himself detached and distant, not actually falling in love.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Eonwe!! I looooove headcanons about him and Eonwe having been bros in the past! makes everything at the end of the war of wrath so much more tragic :)
Sauron and Aule are also great, I think Aule was fatherly toward him and heartbroken to lose him. Which leads me to: Sauron and Curumo/Saruman, considering they were both disciples of Aule - and perhaps Curumo tried to replace Mairon after everything went down, but never quite could... Them having been friends puts their collaboration in LOTR into a different perspective, too. it’s sooo juicy to think of Saruman coming to Middle-earth determined to be Better than Sauron was, to prove to Aule that he’s the superior Maia, maybe even hoping that he can convince Sauron to repent...and then falling into the same trap of evil, being outsmarted by the friend he always wanted to impress, being cast aside and defeated.
AND i’ll also throw in that he and Thuringwethil were definitely best buds in Angband, sorry I don’t make the rules. she’s an exasperated lesbian vampire who has to put up with his disaster gay stunts all the time, less of his lieutenant and more of the friend who tries to keep him out of trouble!
My unpopular opinion about this character: idk, he’s evil? like unrepentantly evil. we woobify him, and i’ve done a lot of that in this post already, but it’s worth really making it clear that he IS very evil. [cw rape] and i definitely think he raped maedhros, and probably tyelpe and a lot of other people too. which is just awful awful awful no matter what way you slice it. so like yeah, i feel for the dude, and it’s hard for me to wrestle with how fun and sexy i think sauron is but at the same time be a huge maedhros stan. it’s strange how we as fandom can excuse murder and war crimes and torture and shit but we draw the line at sexual abuse (which!!!! is bad and shouldn't be excused!!!). like all of the other things are horrifying and terrible and aren’t condoned irl, but in fiction i guess it’s like “meh, violence is fine, i stan a villain” but then this other violent thing is Not Remotely Ok because it’s also sexual. (again!!! not saying that we should be ok with sexual violence!!!!! more like...questioning why we’re ok with other kinds of violence, why sexual things in any form is more taboo. tho im saying this as a person who enjoys a good gory fic, so. yeah. im ramlbling at this point)
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: frankly i dont KNOW, he did SO MUCH in canon already?? i want a more fleshed out, detailed version of everything he did (remember when i said i daydream about rewriting the legendarium from his POV??) but i think events wise he’s done EVERYTHING he could do lmao.
“No. No. No. No. No. NO. NO. NO.
I try to breathe in, but I can’t.
And suddenly the switch inside of me changes. Instead of pushing him away for the last few weeks, I want him. I want him to come and save me.
The laugh that falls from my lips surprises the both of us. “You can’t hurt me anymore.”
The swarm of voices that crowded my ears from before is now gone. A soft chatter of voices occupies the conference room now, around an hour after the festivities had begun. Now the fun is over and the last few of us clean up the forgotten plates, take down the streamers donning the walls, push in the chairs, vacuum up the crumbs, and everything else required to return the room to its former glory.
“Hey, you stop that,” somebody says from behind me. “This was yer party, yer not s’posed to be cleaning it up,” they finish as I turn around to find Harry pushing a lock of hair out of his eyes as he grasps a wet rag in the other hand.
“No, I want to help. Please,” I reply, turning back to the table and picking up the spray bottle. I spritz the plastic top and run the wet rag over the spot, repeating in sections until I finish the table.
“Fine, I guess you can help,” Harry huffs and I smile to myself in triumph as I return to my cleaning. “So, what did ya think?”
“It was a lot of fun and very nice of all of you, thank you so much again,” I tell him trying to circumvent having a conversation. I move to the other end of the table as he begins on the next one over.
A few male coworkers fold up the table to my left and carry it out the door, probably to place back in storage. My eyes life to find Harry leaning over the table he scrubs and he must notice my pause because he meets my eyes. But I can’t look at him, not today.
“I’m glad ya had such a good time, ‘m sure everybody else did too . . Everybody’s going t’ miss ya, ya know,” he comments, and I nod with a small smile. I don’t know how much more of this awkward small talk I can put up with, especially as the domino that caused all of this is gnawing at my insides. Particularly the part where he could have stopped it coming to this.
But he didn’t.
The rest of the clean up consists of few words between Harry and I, or anybody else for that matter. We cleaned tables, folded them and carried them away, stacked chairs, vacuumed, packed things away, and carried more things away. The room was now bleak with its new emptiness and quiet, all of the people previously filling it returning to their lives. Luckily I found my escape shortly after the room was all squared away.
“All done?” a voice asks me. I look over my shoulder and find Asher tying up a bloated garbage bag. My stomach drops all of a sudden with disappointment at who it is, and who it’s not.
“Yep.” I nod. Then I feel bad for being disappointed. Oh it’s just a never-ending rollercoaster, isn’t it?
“I can’t believe you helped clean up. The whole point was having other people do stuff for you, and then you helped them?!” Asher laughs with a disbelieving shake of his head. He happens to pull a giggle from my unsure lips. I sheepishly nod at his words, and I give him another laugh when he almost trips over the garbage bag.
“Are you on your way out now?”
“Yeah, I think so. I just have to drop off some last-minute things - keys and keycards, that sorta thing. But now I can’t find the person to give them to . . ,” I confess, losing my words as I scan the room for those green eyes and that mustard top.
“Hmmmph, well it’s getting late. Maybe he left or had something. You could leave them with Myles or Jennings, I’m sure if you wanna get outta here. I know you’re just dying to get those drinks with me tomorrow,” Asher quips, turning my lips up with his words.
I leave him with a few words, telling him I’ll see him later. I say goodbyes to a few people as I leave the conference room and begin my hunt to find Harry. One I’m not sure how I want to end.
I find my desk empty and many others as well. Glancing at my watch, I find that the hours have flown by. Many people jetted out of here as it’s five o'clock on a Friday afternoon. The cushion welcomes me as I sit down in my chair for the last time, but I don’t miss its welcoming squeak. The squeaking continues as I spin my last spin in the chair, feeling hot tears at the back of my eyes at the finality of my actions. My mug of pencils- no, it’s not my mug anymore. It never was mine.
A polar bear post-it note holder invades my -not my desk - along with framed pictures of strangers, a bright pink day planner, candy apple lotion, and other foreign objects belonging to the new owner of this desk. Who isn’t me. A long sigh leaves my lips as I release my hands I didn’t know I was clenching.
“It’s now or never,” I say aloud, willing myself to stand.
Okay, Becky, we can do this. This isn’t even the hard part.
But it is, I think to myself as my eyes glance up and memories that took place at this desk spin through my head. Making Harry laugh for the first time. Silly arguments with him about which was the better movie. How easily he made me smile by bringing me coffee out of nowhere and- Stop, Becky, you can’t do this now, I tell myself as I swipe a hot tear away from under my eye. I exhale as I get to my feet and feel for the ring of keys in my pocket. Good, they’re still there.
The hallway is dim, but the light from the London evening comes in through the many windows around the office. His hallway. A hallway I will never walk again. Fuck, am I really sure I want to do this? How can I not see him again? You can and you will. You have to, Becky. It was too hard sitting there day after day wanting him. And him not wanting you back. I nod to myself, trying to affirm those words to myself. They don’t do that good of a job, because of the person I see around the corner.
“Oh hey, bug. A-are ya leavin’?” Harry stutters, his furrowed emerald eyes falling on me. He comes to a stop in front of me, running a hand through his mop of curls.
“U-uh yeah. I was just going to drop off the keys with you and go over a few things.”
“Yeah yeah, sounds good. I jus’ really gotta take a leak, so ‘ll be back in a minute, ‘kay?” He asks with a pat on my arm. I nod with a soft ‘okay,’ as I turn to watch him walk away. Nodding with a thumbs up, he gives me a small sad smile before turning around and walking down the hallway. I watch until he’s gone.
Almost done. But now for the hard part. Leaving him for the last time, I contemplate with a pout. I shuffle my feet to his door and twist the knob. Immediately, his familiar woodsy scent hits me. Suddenly, all of my senses are inundated with him. His messy desk. His blazer draped over his chair. Bookmarked biographies dotting his desk. Empty mugs of tea taking up empty spots. The essential oil diffuser in the corner humming as it mists Sandalwood. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 trickling from a Bluetooth speaker in the corner. Harry. It’s all him. And my reserves begin to fall. Can I really do this? No, there’s no way I can. Even if I have to sit at that desk day after day trying to love him, it’s better than leaving him.
Yeah, and then what about when he marries Amber or somebody else that’s not you?
I gulp, trying to get rid of the lump in my throat and at the same time pressing my fingers against my eyes, willing them to dry.
“Wow, are we getting a little teary-eyed on our last day?” a voice snarks from behind me.
No. No. No. No. No. NO. NO. NO.
I try to breathe in, but I can’t.
And suddenly the switch inside of me changes. Instead of pushing him away for the last few weeks, I want him. I want him to come and save me. To save me from her. And to see her for the monster that she is.
The laugh that falls from my lips surprises the both of us. “You can’t hurt me anymore, Amber,” I snap, turning around to face her with a wry smile coating my lips.
“Oh I don’t know about that, I still can. But hey, I won, and don’t you forget that,” she retorts. Amber’s blonde curls shake as she stomps her foot and points a tanned manicured finger at me. How can he even comfortably hold hands with those daggers?
Her blow hits me, and she knows it. I can’t hide it, because I’ve lost it. The last few weeks or even months have taken everything from me. My grandpa dying, my mom’s abusive treatment towards me, Harry’s bipolarness, and Amber’s physical and mental attacks. I lost.
“I don’t care,” I croak, throwing up my hands in defeat. The keys on the ring twinkle with movement in my hand.
“But you do! I know you do!” she cackles, excitement twisting her plastic face into a Cheshire grin. “You wanted him, but you couldn’t have him and so you gave up! I won!” Amber continues, stepping towards me in her flowy scarlet blouse and skin-tight black jeans.
I instinctively step back and away from her, but I stop when I think I hear a noise. It’s a loud squeak on the floor that makes me stop, but it doesn’t stop right away.
“I don’t care, Amber, you can have him! I told him what you did to me and he didn’t believe me because of whatever spell you put on him. So you can keep him and live a wonderful, happy life together. I don’t care anymore, and I hate that I ever did,” I announce with weight to my words, willing my feet to lift from the carpet, but they won’t.
Amber chuckles, crossing her arms with a pleased smile of satisfaction painting her face. “I can’t believe you had the nerve to tell him what I did to you,” she mutters in disbelief, shaking her head. “As if Harry would believe that I’d do such a thing. He probably thinks you made it up. Hell, for all I know I never laid a finger on you and you just imagined the whole thing.”
“You left marks on me, Amber,” I spit out through gritted teeth.
“Yeah, and apparently that wasn’t even enough to convince Harry. God, I really do have him wrapped around my finger,” Amber sighs happily. “I can’t do anything wrong in his eyes. He hasn’t even noticed how much I’ve been gone lately, or how often I’ve been texting this new bloke I’m fucking on the side.”
“You slut!” I exclaim, not being able to hold it in. “Harry loves you and would do anything for you! He built this firm from the ground up! He’s sweet, he’s kind, he’s giving, he’s funny- he’s amazing and that’s how you treat him?!”
“Excuse me?! Who here was throwing themselves at my boyfriend right in front of me?!” Amber argues, taking another frightening step toward me. She’s no longer laughing, but instead, her drawn-on eyebrows have fallen into a point above her glassy stare.
“How dense are you?!” I laugh, feeling the anger rise warmly in my chest. I really don’t care anymore. “You have such a huge problem with that - which never happened, thank you - but you think it’s okay to cheat on your boyfriend?! My god, you really are fucking dumb!”
“You just had your last laugh, bitch, because I’m going to slap that smug smile right off your face,” she snarls, taking several steps before I can almost see the flames rising in her eyes.
“No, you won’t!” a voice announces.
I take my eyes off of Amber to see who said that, but it’s a second too long that lets her clawed hand accost my face.
the whole thing but i think esp how oh-aew became more and more sure. the hammock scene is really something cause before he even says it, he’s touching him (tay) the whole time. on the couch before when they were like looking at each other. it was really refreshing? almost to see him be so direct. i’m going to have to think of why he leaned in in their room. i guess to evaluate and test himself, which is fine, but he definitely already knew. the way he rejected that open invitation was fascinating stuff like truly. really good subtext. “you know. you don’t? but i think you do” and “i think you’re jealous” — maybe it’s because tay is a sure thing always (or officially?) but oh-aew’s got himself all tied up in knots if he can do the whole thing to get to where he wants to go but he’s sure with tay. which is fun to see, nice, intimate, sensual etc. it’s nice to see him have firm command over something. unfortunately, life isn’t that easy.
the music  and sound design were really good this ep and i’m glad they changed it up. i have one critique which isn’t a critique so much as it would be impossible to do, really, and wouldn’t attract us as much. it’s obvious that though they are not too far from 18 (3 years out) they aren’t teenagers anymore. the way oh-aew acts whilst approaching someone is confident with the hesitant parts. it’s better this way; it’s not fumbling or annoying to watch but it is obvious in contrast. i would say it helps the story and i suppose, in a way, it does but you can’t really replicate certain parts of understanding yourself and the way we  learn how to enact sexual cues and sensuality and stuff definitely becomes better with age. it’s easier to be hesitant about leaning in then doing certain things (touching, crawling, etc like when i was a teen i would never do any of that like that even if i knew the dude liked me. and i’ve been in these situations since them as a full grown adult and it’s still ridiculous. on the other hand, tay isn’t a liar like any other men i have liked (girls i don’t usually have this issue lmao) so)
i can safely say that from what we have witnessed a well-rounded and happy ending should be imminent. if not, i will critique it and be irritated. one good thing about story is that we don’t have to keep predictions. i hate watching television for this reason. these are 5 odd hours of a show but it’s like one and done. given the writing, it would be a waste to just let them seperate or something for the sake of coming of age. the heaviness is solidified now and unfortunately there’s all these signifiers that they’re fated to be in each other’s lives and share the same friends.
it’s good tay was so caught up in his day he wasn’t like “oh hold up i told tarn i couldn’t today” but also sad. i mean i’m not sad for her and bas, that’s what being on the other end of heartbreak or liking someone is like. we all go through it (or if we haven’t we know people who have) so it’s interesting to watch.
for some reason i thought there would be different clashes. but it wasn’t a big to-do at all. the confession. it seems like it will have to be tay who kind of comes to this conclusion on his own. i struggled with my sexuality but i never had another person to spur it on. the acceptance you extend to other people doesn’t always involve yourself which is another interesting piece. had he never thought of it before? had he only known one person to make his heart leap? is it his expectations?
if i’m reading it correctly hoon’s friend is probably his “close friend” or his girlf but regardless there’s an outsider coming in. there’s all these ideas of like duties as a child of a parent especially who you love etc so i wonder if that will come up.
also want to casually mention that i noticed that it’s a  “french and thai food” place. it may not seem like a big deal but thailand was never colonized by europe (i just learned.) i was thinking about it because there was french vietnam basically. if you don’t know the history of vietnam the french are the first to “own” vietnam, then they discuss it with the british and when the US is formed, then we have the vietnam war—this greatly affected all areas around them in SEA especially laos and cambodia. HOWEVER, they only had missionaries visit and it is chalked down to “relations”—colonizers ruin everything but i guess they were never officially colonized.
it helps add to the story of why their town looks the way it does, how small it is, and just how far their understanding of the world is yet. it’s contained but it doesn’t mean they are free from outside influence (IE tourists, hoons friend etc) and not all outsiders or differences or a bad thing (in this case, the french are a bad thing but they lasted and isn’t it funny what remains.)
them not kissing is alsooooo a note i liked. because kissing makes it real, and it’s new and weird, and it would mean a lot to oh-aew if he got his first kiss. but tay realizing he’s not like, touching or caressing breasts (LOL) is just wild to me. he’s the type to go if you want it, do it, but damn. that shit runs deep. being young fucking sucks.
also i abhor and i mean abhor call me by your name. like every part of it but the DP was thai, too, just a lil reminder. however, if it was as nice as this show. this show was what i think a white person wanted to imagine on film but simply couldn’t. it portrays the really weird shit about growing up and desire in such a digestible way. it doesn’t rely on precociousness or ridiculous situations or even money to hold the story up (one of my fav critiques of CMBYN is here) but this team really impressed me. i am not so easily moved.
ANYWAY that was a lot of fun and it was nice. they have great chemistry. i hope bkpp stay friends forever and i hope the cast and crew are proud of themselves. the writing in this one really surprised me and as usual the DP and editor did great. unfortunately, i know expect this level in everything i watch. there’s a lot less resources in newer industries but it is clear that hwen you are on a mission you can make something amazing with what you have—no matter what—and luckily they found investors (obviously) but sincerely this should be the level all these shows are at. that’s why capitalism sucks and BL as a genre is simply inadequate nowadays.
on an endnote: i hate the DNC and i don’t like our options in the USA and when i have the energy i will get back into organizing. i finished editing something really important though and it looks like biden might win. though that means nothing now, it’s better than what we have. so we went from fascist to  person who won’t reverse anything and is just okay. but it looks like we have at least that. so i thank the week for being mild and surprising and i’m going to pray that we have one idiot over the other.
