How to write a gripping beginning
by Writerthreads on Instagram
Personally, I find beginnings to be one of the hardest parts of the whole book because it's so important. The beginning is what makes or breaks your book. It's what keeps readers interested after they pick it up at a store, or when they first download it on their Kindle. Below are some tips, as well as some analyses, on how to perfect a story's beginning.
Introduce your main character and the setting: Mrs. Dalloway
By "introduce", I don't mean a giant 10-page info dump on royal family tree or the ten kingdoms the world is made up of. Rather, I'm thinking of a character in a place, or doing something. The best, and one of the most famous examples would be how Virginia Woolf started Mrs. Dalloway:
Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself.
Already, you have the titular character, Mrs Dalloway, introduced. She's doing something, too. She's saying that she's going to buy flowers herself, setting up a scene later where she's probably going to, or back out of, buying flowers. The pronoun "herself" suggests to the reader in Woolf's era that she's of a middle-class background and that somebody (eg. a servant) would normally be running errands for Mrs. Dalloway, but the character wanted to do this simple task herself.
I could go on forever about how each word in this simple sentence has implicit meanings and my ex-A Level Eng Lit teacher will probably be very proud of me, but that's not the point. The main idea is that in just a single sentence, a lot is being revealed to the reader without the writer having to info dump anything.
Allow me to continue to the second paragraph of the book:
For Lucy had her work cut out for her. The doors would be taken off their hinges; Rumpelmayer's men were coming. And then, thought Clarissa Dalloway, what a morning-fresh as if issued to children on a beach.
More characters are introduced now: we have Lucy, Rumpelmayer and his men. Mrs. Dalloway's full name is revealed, and so is her personality through her thought. It's childlike, whimsical and light, and that's why her name "Clarissa Dalloway" is used here instead of the stiff "Mrs. Dalloway".
In just two paragraphs, we are introduced to the titular character and some minor characters are mentioned. We also know bits and pieces of what's going to happen. Woolf artistically starts off the book with simple prose. Everything is well thought out, yes, Virginia Woolf is a literary genius, yes, but this is something that we can all do: write a simple introduction without weighting readers down with lots of detail we don't need, and get straight into the story.
Start in media res
Fun fact: "in media res" is also the name of our Discord Server!
When you start in the middle of an action, readers are transported straight to the story, hooking them in. For example, if you were writing a rom com, you could start with the main character bumping into a long-lost friend:
Emma saw a familiar cowboy hat bobbing in and out of the crowd in front of her. Emma found herself pushing through sweaty limbs into the crowd, trying to catch a glimpse of the person who wore the hat, trying to see whether it was really her friend who had ghosted her five years ago.
Obviously this isn't the best beginning in the world, but you get the point.
Try something interesting
A strong story opening makes you want to know more. Donna Tartt does this perfectly in A Secret History:
The snow in the mountains was melting and Bunny had been dead for several weeks before we came to understand the gravity of our situation.
What is up? Who is Bunny? What's so serious about their predicament? Tell us more!!! Bunny's death makes us want to know what has happened, while mentioning the characters' situation wants us to know what's going to happen. Tartt forces us to continue on to find out the full story.
Lead with a strong statement
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy:
Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
Tolstoy’s first line introduces the domestic strife that drives the story’s tragic events, using a bold, sweeping statement, while Dicken's catchy first sentence introduces us to the book's main themes.
There are way more examples of good beginnings that you can only learn from by reading. If you're a beginner, literally comb through a library shelf of the genre you're writing in and see how published authors have written their beginnings. Alternatively, you could go check out our post on the best story beginnings for more ideas!

Where do I even begin ?
Oh let’s start with the fact that your writing style was INSANE .I really love the way you describe things .Dark Alicent my beloved you were done justice in this .
And Alicent having Aegon to attend lessons ma then granting him so wine was such a goof bit and I do think that was in character for both of them .
Alicent played the dutiful way after Viserys died (“Let him rest!”) was such a delicious detail .I really felt for Aegon when he takes the throne and it’s such a nightmare but if he stays delusional his family (and any possibility of recognition)is dead .I SEE what you were doing with Helaena’s warnings and I love it .
The politics in this were all so delicious .Weird word for talking about politics but reading about the Black box and Corlys as hand and Lord Arryn and Rhaenyra’s pregnancy was so engaging .
Alicent losing three kids was a change that struck me ,and I find it interesting because a lot of women lost children in medieval times and now we don’t even know if they actually lost them or even had them so it was interesting in the historical sense .And really sad because the scene where she is caressing her empty belly really did something to me .I stared at the phone for like ten minutes .
Alicole in this was INSANE ,like wdym she literally said she wanted to have his babies ? What do you mean she’s PLANNING to make him hers ? Not that it makes me unhappy actually I was kicking my feet the entire time .
Alicent’s dream was such a haunting and good bit .Aemond being his cunty self my beloved .And you mentioning Daeron with Criston …the way you wiew Daeron is so heartwarming he is such a KID .
And ofc her last words to Viserys were so cunty and so hunting .The way she took his life and the only possibility to ease his guilt after what he did to Aemma was probably the best bit of the entire chapter .”See you in Hell” GODD
I’m so ready for the second chapter and I really thank you for this fic already because it made my day better .
YOU GO ALICENTSULTANA
Omg, thank you so much!
Lessons in exchange for wine is something that totally would happen, this is soft manipulation/motivation.
Alicent must be a cancer, I can feel it, it's in my blood. I have wondered for a long time what is a major manipulation feature one can express, and I totally would play dumb and heartbroken just to see the outcome and cover my actions, I gave her this to make her truly unhinged.
Aegon is doing it for his children and his siblings, this is the sole reason, wine also. I think he used Helaena's vision to justify his actions and feel less guilty about it, but don't worry, there will be no remorse coming.
I'm not a politics girl, like I don't understand anything about it, so in my head I always justify everything as "political undisclosed reasons", but then, Alicent is a politician, her father and life taught her the hard way, so she had, as queen mediator, to act. Including taking risks with helping Corlys raise to position - one snake + one snake = naja and coral. She must be suttle, must analyze everything, every step, no faux pas.
Corlys is playing for the winning team when is convenient, though don't ask me what he will tell his wife.
I also pondered who would be a major Lord who could prove himself against Rhaenyra, and who better than the brother of her mother. Throughout s1 she stroked me as being relapse and naive about the power of court women, while Alicent entertained them, Rhaenyra was mostly doing faces and throwing some tantrums. Who's to say she wouldn't offend, unknowingly, a member of her own extended family? The Arryns are a super important house, and are her relatives, losing them is losing the vale.
Let's not mention Viserys health deteriorating and her doing what? Thousands years of honeymoon? Alicent was pregnant and holding a child while the world was falling apart and pretty girl was doing what? This will be brought up again in the future. Viserys would 100% overlook and think nothing of it (as always).
I have an hc that she had at least three more pregnancies, though she would have lost them by natural causes, I decided to make her get rid of them herself, and lamenting it because obviously she wouldn't want to do it, but she couldn't bring herself to birth more children to an ungrateful crown. I believe after Aemond, she would often tell Criston like "oh, i wish they were yours" both because she lost faith in Viserys, but also because Criston was the dadTM and she's in love with him.
They are very much aware of their feelings, but my intention was to do it much more mature and heavy, more wild and on edge, they are certainly more touchy, more open, not that many notice or see it happening beyond some of her servants and Westerling (he have a keen eye).
But again, they would never be caught red handed (god I really want to post the second chapter, people will scream).
Even if he's already hers, Alicent doesn't content herself with halves, she wants the whole meal, the whole experience.
Daeron will always be a baby, he's not allowed to grow up, he stays in mini size, pocket size. Though she would want it, Alicent won't get pregnant again, she doesn't have the energy to do so, and she is Dowager Queen, she has an image to keep.
She hates Viserys, like, actively, fervently. Alicent wanted to say those words when he was alive but she couldn't risk him not dying.
I'm so glad this made your day better, this is always the major intent! Chapter 2 will come soon, I'll try to post it as soon as possible.
Thank you so much for reading and telling me what you thought of it!

All right, fellow MCU fans
So, after seeing the Marvels today, it got me thinking. Now, you probably don't know who I am. But I do happen to be a writer. Not a very good one mind you (several people would say otherwise, but shush, give me my self-loathing) Phase 4 (and the current parts of 5) is not that great. So I want to rewrite the Multiverse Saga. Yes. The entire thing. Even though it's not finished.
Very long blocks of text below. It's really the only thing that keeps me organized. Please read it though if you are interested. It'll be split up into sections, for somewhat easy perusal.
Now, I know this is an ambitious project, and one not done. I am no stranger to things like this, see my own game/show I'm making. (This is the only time I'm going to mention it. But I am pretty proud of it) So, for my very small amount of sanity, I'm stopping it at The Marvels, and Loki season 2 (Oops, still not finished with it yet). And I wanted to ask people what they thought was lackluster, or mediocre. Not the Marvel I and many other people grew up on. I do understand that it was flawed before, but when I recently rewatched most of them, I found that my childhood love for them had blossomed into something new. I was 6 when the first Avengers came out. I learned how to shoot a bow because of Hawkeye in that movie. And I think it deserves better, especially after watching the Marvels.
Now, this means everything after Endgame. So from Black Widow to The Marvels in terms of the movies, and the Disney+ series from Wandavision to Loki Season 2. I have a feeling it's going to take me a second to get through the remaining 5 episodes of Loki S2. My family wants to watch it with me, and they're all decently busy... Anyways, that's 10 movies, and 9 series. Although I don't accept Secret Invasion. Like at all. Anyways.
I have yet to decide what I'm going to publish this on. Probably A03, just because that's easiest for me. And I can organize much easier. Do let me know what you think.
So, before I get into the problems I've identified, feel free to stop here, and reblog or ask me your problems with the aforementioned shows and movies. I'm talking writing or character problems, as we've seen in the series. I am a fan of the comics, but you can divert from that, or stick to them.
Oh, and if you say something like "Make it more queer", I am a raging bisexual enby. I will already be making it queer as fuck, and can be convinced to ship pretty much anyone, if I can get a good reasoning behind it. Minors should be shipped with only minors. That's one of my few rules, if you send anything to me. So yeah, I'm doing genderfluid Loki.
Thoughts on everything:
This is just here so that I don't get a ton of repeats. I'll go movies first, then the TV shows.
Black Widow (2021) - Honestly, this is too late of a movie. Natasha deserved this before Endgame or Infinity War came out. But release dates aside, Taskmaster needs more screentime, and a chance to show how menacing they are. Natasha also needs more time with her family, and the parents need to be fleshed out a bit more. Belova is far too smart to be tricked by the lady in the post-credit scene.
Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings (2021) - I don't have any major problems with this movie. The Great Protector, or the dragon, and the supernatural creature, I think he's called Dweller In Darkness, kinda felt a little blank, and the Dweller shouldn't have died, only been pushed back. And I don't like Katy that much. Trevor is much better comedic relief in my opinion.
Eternals (2021) - Oh boy, where do we start with this one? You know it's bad if I can't remember any of the main characters names besides Ikarus. And that's because I was laughing my ass off at him throwing himself into the sun. There was also the Celestial I think it was? Anyways that thing broke islands up, and then just became a massive statue, and like no one mentions it? I don't remember much else about this movie, even after having watched it like 3 times. Oh, and the Ebony Blade was shown off. I like that if they can do something fun with that.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) - Dr. Strange feels a little shoe-horned in. The whole sanctum being overtaken by snow was pretty clever, but Strange being a father figure to Peter is not super well established. Could be fixed with a couple of rewrites. Or Strange and Stark being together. Peter is a dumbass, and the reason for him starting the whole plot... is so dumb. I understand, teenagers can be stupid, hell, I go to public high school, but Peter's shown he's a lot smarter than this. But I do like the crossover (Dafoe as Green Goblin my beloved) and the fact that the other Spidermen get to say goodbye in one last movie. Anyways, Ned's wizard connections need to be elaborated on as well.
Doctor Strange: Multiverse Of Madness (2022) - Alright, getting my biggest problem out of the way first. Wanda's corruption arc should have been shown. It should have been developed through the movie, and Wanda should have been with Strange and America. She can still be evil, and die after she realizes her actions, but this basically destroys the point of Wandavision. She was willing to say goodbye. Wanda has been a favorite of mine for years, and I read her comics religiously as a child. We need to see the power of the Scarlet Witch. What it did without Wanda. Her "No More Mutants" line sent chills down my spine the first time I read it. Sam Raimi directed this movie. Strange and Wanda should have had more horrific shit. And that one Strange with 3 eyes should have been the one from What If. We need horror in this. America also needs to be more fleshed out. I do love her, but we get like one scene of her being traumatized of basically growing up nowhere. Her moms get to stay though. I'm just going to ignore the last post-credit scene, because... that's setting something up I'm not sure of.
Thor: Love & Thunder (2022) - First up, Gorr has a great setup. He needed more screentime though. We need to see more of his god killing. They should rightfully be shitting their pants over this man. Thor leaving to save Sif was a good move, but that joke ruined the tension. She should have died there, proof of the god killer. Jane Foster is perfectly fine, and her arc is a lovely send-off. I would have loved some more stuff about the kids, especially Heimdall's. I don't even remember his name. He should have been shown doing something in Jane's return to Asgard, something that showed off his parentage. The meeting of the gods is a great scene, but there should have been people who spoke up, and then promptly getting thrown out, or even getting killed. Even more of a reason for Thor and crew to convince him. I think everything else is pretty good. Also Valkyrie is perfect in this movie. Bi queen. And her Loki knives are lovely.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) - I actually think this one just needs a couple of little tweaks. I understand why they couldn't have T'Challa show up in the spirit world, and Killmonger was great, but I still think something between the siblings would be good. Fuck, I love the funeral scene. It was a lovely sendoff to both T'Challa, and Chadwick. Namor seems a little rash though. Might just be the comics leaking through on that matter but I do like the Mayan inspirations in the movie!
Antman: Quantumania (2023) - I'm not really sure on this movie. I don't like Janet in this movie. She feels too secretive. She could have told them plenty, even lied that Kang had gone home. He'd gotten out somehow. Kang didn't seem scared enough of the others, but that might just be me thinking of that. Oh, and MODOK sucked. He shouldn't be a joke. But Darren could have done something else, because he is in there.
Guardians of The Galaxy V.3 (2023) - Perfection in every way. I'm not changing anything unless it involves getting everything I'm incorporating in. And the Christmas Special is also great.
The Marvels (2023) - Spoilers! Kamala needed more screentime, she just generally felt disconnected from the plot besides her bangle. And I also wanted a more menacing villain. That's been the problem with them recently. They don't make me think that they could actually beat them. I like everything else though. Flerkins were great as usual. I love these stupid creatures so much. That one scene was beautiful.
Now to the shows! These are going to be so much shorter.
Wandavision (2021) - I think this is good. No notes.
Loki S1 (2021) - Good, besides the Sylvie/Loki romance. They are siblings. I'm not sure if there's anything else that I really had a problem with. It's been a moment. Which is a shame. I love Loki (Also bi confirmation! I love it!)
The Falcon & Winter Soldier (2021) - I also think this is good, besides maybe having some problems with the villain. Bromance all the way.
What If...? (2021) - Also pretty good. Little self-contained story. I like the zombies.
Hawkeye (2021) - I also think this one's pretty well written. Macaroni is constantly referenced in my house. Lucky is also a pretty boy.
Moonknight (2022) - Honestly, god tier. Anyways, no one mentioned the stars literally turning in Egypt. But maybe it was just the people thinking that they were drunk as shit and seeing something.
Ms. Marvel (2022) - Second favorite being Moonknight. I also don't remember anything glaringly wrong.
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (2022) - Besides the tone of the show being inconsistent as shit, I think this show should have dove into some of the topics it brought up more. It just seemed a little surface level. Maybe a WWDITS style mockumentary would work better.
Secret Invasion (2023) - THIS ENTIRE SHOW SUCKS ASS. THIS WHOLE THING WAS DONE SO BADLY. I am not taking anything from this show
Loki S2 (2023) - Too distracted by another season 2 coming out, so I have yet to finish. I have heard it's good though. I've seen the first episode, and it's going pretty good so far.
Well, you made it to the bottom! Yay!
...This took me an hour to write. I did get the doc set up. And got a bit of an outline set up.

Happy New Year!!
Fandom: TF2
Characters: Engineer, Medic
CW: Drinking. A lot of drinking.
Summary: It's New Years Eve and the pair decided to go out for a drink or two. Thirteen hours later and with the other mercs joining in as well, they're still at the bar. It's fun, definitely, but Engie can't help but feel something a bit...off when looking at Medic.
Word Count: 2.7k
A/N: Violently sobbing and pounding my fist against the ground. I finally got to the part of my fic where this stupid chapter/scene happens. This has been rotting in my brain since December. Anyways, this is an excerpt from the most recent chapter of my longfic. You don't need to read it to understand anything. Enjoy.
Engie watched in awe as Medic pounded back his twenty-second glass of beer. By god it was impressive.
They'd been in here for a long while now. How long? To Engie, maybe an hour. But, he knew damn well it's been longer than that. He can see the light outside, or more accurately the lack thereof. They'd gotten here at ten and now it's deep into the night. He'd look at a clock, but things were rather hazy and hard to read now.
He wiped the residue from his lips. "Yet another one down, haha!!" he yelled. A quirky thing with him was how he lost any and all control of his voice the minute he got slightly intoxicated. Doesn't matter. The music's loud and Engie couldn't care less. The hangover and hearing loss was a problem for tomorrow.
Tonight? Why not have some fun? Relax. Kick his feet back and enjoy. He deserves it after all that nonsense back at the base. A nice full day out at the bar, bleeding the owner out of all of their supply.
Engie clapped in response. "Hell yeah! Number twenty-two! Think you could go fer another one?"
Medic bubbly giggled. His cheeks were rosy red and his face was fixed into a permanent smile. He looked so goddamn happy. Watching him was an experience all of itself, one that was elevated when the both of you are several drinks deep. Seeing him laugh like that made everything feel less important. Like the only thing that mattered was being with him.
...what the hell was that line of thought? It's what he was experiencing, definitely, but it was strange to think like that. That intense. Feelings. Hah. That's not what he should be thinking about right now. That just made things more confusing.
By the time the Engineer recollected himself, he noticed that Medic was rambling again. In German. He was going a mile a minute. Whatever he was saying was completely lost on Engie. He could barely understand English right now, much less this. The words slurred together into a homogenous slush of vowels and sharply pronounced consonants.
"Uh, doc? Doc?" He snapped his fingers a couple times.
"Und das ist der Grund– hm? Ja?"
"You're back in German mode again. I'd love to know what you're saying."
Medic clasped his mouth, feeling around. "Was I really?" he chuckled. His accent was more obvious than ever, though Engie didn't care. If anything, it was cute.
Engie joined in. "I'll drink to that." He raised his hand once more. "Jessie?"
"Another round?..." the bartender replied, a moderate amount of fear in his voice. "I've already served your booth over forty drinks–"
"Enough chat! I wish to see if I can beat my record time now." Medic rubbed his hands energetically. "Will you join me?"
He shrugged. "Why the hell not?"
Moments later, Jessie brought them more drinks. "Lovely night, I know, but I was wondering when you would both pay off your tab."
"Both? What about Py– Pyro?" Engie turned to see that they weren't there. Completely absent. Now that he thought about it, he couldn't remember seeing or hearing Pyro for a long while. Where'd he slip off to?
"Ahem, that's beside the point. It's getting close to midnight and I'm going to close up as soon as it happens."
Medic spat a little back into his drink. "Mh? What? You're going to kick us out?! What for? We are res– hic– responsible, you dummkopf!"
Jessie motioned to the rest of the bar. Engie saw that the place was trashed. Slashes and rips in the other booths. The floor was covered with beer and whiskey. A far cry from the clean and inviting atmosphere it once was hours earlier. The other mercenaries were loudly drinking and conversing, with the only one by himself being the Demoman at the piano. He was playing along with the jukebox, adding onto the keyboard section of whatever songs came on. It was a lovely addition if the Engineer was to be honest.
"I see nothing wrong with it," Engie said.
"It's been like this for thirteen hours. None of you have given me any money. Other patrons tried coming in only to be driven out."
"Sounds like their issue. Sorry that we can't help it." He shrugged. Medic snickered in response.
Jessie glared. "I'll have you know that I have been running this bar for–" He stopped to count on his fingers– "six years! I have a family to feed. It consists of me and only me. I'll have you know that I work very hard to get the right amount of lead and radiation in my brew–"
"Oh mein Gott!" Medic yelled, a wide smile on his face. "I love this song."
Engie raised his head to the radio, recognizing the tune instantly. Scout constantly played record after record from Tom Jones. It would be humiliating to not remember that snappy beat and trumpets from that song. "It's Not Unusual" was a neat little jig that he quite liked himself, though Medic seemed far more into it.
"I was talking–"
"Raus, schweinhunde." Medic pushed Jessie out of the way, getting up and over to the dance floor.
"What the hell's that idiot gonna do now?" Engie gave a light-hearted chuckle. He watched expectingly as his partner stood in the middle of it and began to snap along to the beat. He tapped his foot and began to sway back and forth.
He was dancing. He was imitating the signature Tom Jones moves. Pretty damn good as well, especially considering he's had over twenty lead-filled glasses of beer. He moved with grace, but also with enough of his own weirdness and off-beat charm. His own spin on this dance move. Engie sat there in constant silence, observing him.
Then, Medic looked back up. Eye contact. A flash in his eyes appeared for just long enough for Engie to know what he was about to do. Before he could get a word out, he spoke.
"Don't just sit there! Dance with me!"
"Oh, I dunno about that–"
"It'll be fun! Trust me." Medic approached him, holding out his hand. Engineer stared at it for a moment, considering his options.
Well, what's the worst that can happen? He grabbed it, instantly being yanked from the booth. He was dragged along to the floor, with Medic holding up both of his hands.
Engie was no stranger to dancing, especially with another person. One helluva dancer back in his university days. Could impress a whole group of girls (or boys for that matter) with his moves.
But, with Medic, it was a whole other beast. It was as though he'd been lobotomized. Any previous skill and technique he may have learned were just completely erased. At the mercy of whatever his partner had in store for him.
He stepped back, then to the left, back to the right two times. Engie followed along, slowly getting the hang of things. Didn't help that he was half a foot shorter, but he had fun regardless. It was a dance. It's not supposed to be proper and practical.
It must have gone on for a minute of this. "Ohoho! How exciting," he hummed as he repositioned his hand around his back, dipping the Engineer.
"Where the hell you learn to dance?" he asked, a coy smirk on his face.
He shrugged. "Nowhere! First time with a partner." Medic pulled him back right up, twisting him and then spinning him away. "That's what makes it fun, no?" he continued, doing his little dance now. He shook from side to side, shaking his arms in time.
Engie followed after him, doing similar upbeat and energetic moves. God, it knocked the wind out of him quite a bit, but he couldn't care. It was beyond magical. The sheer joy and happiness radiating from the two of them was unmatched. From the extra bit of piano from Demoman to the fact only they were dancing. It was a perfect moment.
Yet, as he looked at his partner, he couldn't help but feel something else. An odd twisting in his stomach. Could be from the beer, but usually they don't ache like this. It was a warm sensation, one that only grew more intense the longer he looked.
There was something off about himself, yet he couldn't quite rationalize what it may be. All he knew was that he was delighted to be around Medic.
Soon enough, the song ended, fading out. The radio host came back on. "Alright, folks, that was Tom Jones. Now, I haven't gotten a song up for you peppercats quite yet, but I'll have you know that right now it's approximately– hold on, lemme check my clock– fifteen seconds until midnight."
Medic straightened out, alert. "Mein Gott! I nearly forgot about the new year. Come, come, quickly! Raus! Everyone, together!" He grabbed Engineer by the side, pulling him closer. "Ten! Nine!"
The other mercs joined in, rushing over. "Eight! Seven! Six!"
They all looked towards the radio, huddled together. "Five! Four! Three! Two!... One!" Then, a jumbled cry of cheer saying, "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!"
The group began to clap. Soldier sang Auld Lang Syne along with the Demoman. Others clicked their drinks together. Engineer didn't have anything with him, but he had an idea. He fidgeted with his Gunslinger, switching the ring finger into a blowtorch. A warm blue flame erupted from the fingertips. He waved it around like a makeshift sparkler.
But, as he did so, some stray drops of whiskey and liquor from the other mercenaries' drinks flew at him, passing right through the fire. Without warning, they caught aflame. Mere seconds later, the burning spirit fell to the floor, spreading to the rest of the spilled drink. A fire started right before them.
On second thought, maybe the blowtorch wasn't that great of an idea.
"Oh, fire," Medic said absent-mindedly.
"Huh, that's new," Engie muttered. He wheezed, unable to control his laughter.
"Guess that's the cue to leave, ain't it?" Demo looked to the rest of them.
"I do believe yes. The fire has already spread to the whole bar. I argue this place has five minutes before it begins to care in. I'd rather not die here," Spy added, pressing a cigarette to his lips.
"Ight, let's book it." The Engineer shrugged. They turned around, Medic still clinging to his side. The burning inferno was the least of his worries as of now. He couldn't care less about it or the panicked screams and obscenities thrown at them by Jessie. I mean, it's just a bar. It burning down is nothing that bad.
"Did you do that?" Medic asked. Engineer noticed his weight becoming heavier, as he acted more like a crutch to Medic than anything else. His partner leaned on him, nearly tripping over his own feet as they stepped over the flaming puddles of beer.
"Think so."
He giggled. "Now we're talking!" They both exited the bar, walking into the parking lot. "Come on, Herr Engineer, do we have to go back to the base? Can't we just stay out? It's been forever since we've kidnapped somebody..." Medic's words were slurred and hard to hear.
"We've already been drinking for ages now, doc. Kinda just wanna go back home."
"Oh please! When has th– hic– that ever stopped anybody?"
"Christ, just how drunk are you?"
"I want to put myself in critical condition and barely still alive just so I can go to heaven and see God and spit in his face... Wouldn't that be funny?"
"...that answers that question." Engie was practically carrying Medic now. He was putting every bit of energy to keep him upright and from falling over.
Eventually, they came back to the car. Engie reached for his keys and tried the door, only to then see it rolled down out of nowhere. It gave him quite a fright, but he calmed down upon seeing who was in the driver's seat.
Pyro stared back at them, cocking his head to the side.
"Oh hey, smokes!" Engie grinned. "What are you doin' in here?"
Pyro covered his ears. "Mhh mhmn."
"Too loud? Can't blame you. God, I can already tell my ears are gonna be ringing like nothing else tomorrow."
"Who are you talking to?" Medic muttered. "Oh, hello, Herr Pyro." He waved. Pyro waved back.
"You mind drivin' us? I don't think I can walk straight, much less drive."
Pyro nodded repeatedly. He unlocked the back door, letting them in. Engie opened up the door and slid Medic off and guided him into the seat. "C'mon, it ain't that hard to sit down."
Eventually, Medic slipped into the car. Engie was about to close the door, only for Medic to tug on his arm. "Wait, don't leave me..."
Engineer paused. "What?"
He smiled back. Medic's eyes were cloudy and tired, yet full of life and joy. The toothy grin he gave was heartwarming in every way possible. A beam of light in the darkness of night.
"...oh, alright. I'll stay in the back with ya." Engie got into the back seat, closing the door. "Let's go, Pyro. Back to the base." He tapped on the headrest. Immediately, Pyro shifted it into reverse, jerking the car back before then driving off.
"Woa– oah!" Medic stumbled, recovering from such movement. He snickered and laughed. "Mein Gott, I'm so drunk right now..."
"I know, I know," Engie said calmly and relaxed. "Once we get home, I'm going to bed."
"No afterparty? Nothing?"
"Nah... I already have enough today." He glanced back at Medic. "Thanks for doing this. I really needed some time out."
"Mh? Oh, that was nothing, hehe." He waved his hand dismissively.
Engie felt his stomach tighten into a knot while looking at him. He still didn't understand what he was feeling. This was odd. He knew he'd experienced this sort of thing before, but couldn't remember where or how. It was pleasant though. Through all of this confusion, he knew that this was a good feeling.
The car ride grew silent. The calming droning noise of the engine humming while the wind blew by put Engie at ease. Some peace and quiet after all of that chaos at the bar. A little time to sit and think.
Issue was that thinking hurts to do. His head ached and his throat burned. His ears stung and his stomach churned. He was going to have to deal with the hangover of a lifetime in a bit. Sounds thrilling.
Yet, he couldn't care about that enough. He was still preoccupied with this strange feeling towards Medic. It wasn't just tonight that it happened. He recalled several times before when something like this bubbled up within him. This giddiness from being near him. This want to stay with him. What was it? What...what is it–
Right in the middle of his train of thought, Engie felt Medic lean against him. He looked back to see that his eyes were closed. Moments later, he was snoring and his neck rolled to the side. His head rested on him.
He was so close. So near to him. So warm. So cozy. It was right to be with him.
That's when it hit him. It was as though he sobered up in three seconds as the realization hit him. All it took was for his partner to sleep on him for him to finally get what he was feeling for that fog of confusion to clear up.
This was something different than being friends. Something that Engie had not felt for another person in a number of years.
Looked at Medic. He was so peaceful and cute. The way his glasses were slightly askew and his breathing was slow and relaxing. He could even feel the faint thumping of his heart.
Engie slid his right hand behind Medic, bringing him into a hug. He couldn't deny it any longer. Everything about him was perfect. He was the chaotic whirlwind that complemented his eccentricities. He was the odd madman that truly got what it was like to be an artist by using the sciences. He was the only other one to see his cold, dead heart and not be immediately disgusted. He was happy around him. He was free to do anything with him. He was himself at his absolute best.
He loved Medic. With all of his heart, he loved him.

5 things asks - Sanctuary and Stargate
Thanks so much for the ask! ❤️
send me a tv show/book/fandom and i’ll say the top 5 things i’d change about it
Stargate (I'm going to include a follow up movie here, because I got another ask)
5. Continuum didn't exist. There was no *real* point to it. I understand tying up the Ba'al storyline, but it became all about Mitchell. I especially hated the end, where we see the guys together, but not the girls, and then the last shot was Mitchell with his grandfather (think it was his grandfather? Can't remember). No. Uh-uh. You're finishing your storyline after ten seasons and two movies, you include everyone not just goddamn Cameron Mitchell.
4. Cassie would be more prominent. She needed to be in there more. Even if it was just more liberally mentioned by the members of SG-1. They all obviously had very good bonds with her, but she disappeared from the general storyline and only Sam was shown to be all that concerned about her after Janet died. She was great (especially for the team) and she was nudged to the side.
3. Mitchell did not become leader of SG-1. Sam was done dirty with that appointment (by extension I think Amanda Tapping also was). She had been there for eight years, was Jack's second-in-command, then Mitchell just waltzed in and whined his way into command and guilted everyone to come back. All he did to 'deserve' SG-1 was crash a plane. I would have appreciated him becoming Sam's second-in-command much more and I think it would have been better friendship if she'd been teaching him rather than following.
2. Janet. Fraiser. Lived. I hated her death. It was dramatic and I can kind of see why they went there, but no!!! They did not need to! She needed to live for so many reasons. Not only was she an awesome character in her own right, Cassie was orphaned again. Janet deserved so much better and they got rid of her character for drama reasons.
1. Sam and Jack got together in canon! I know that producers and such have said that they did after Threads, but I really would have liked to see them together in the show or one of the movies. All that build up and nothing to show for it. Such a disappointment. They even cut a scene where Sam eluded to it in Atlantis. They deserved a happy ending, at least a mention of it.
Sanctuary, Other than a Fifth Season (no numbered order, because they're interchangeable)
More Sally! I love Sally and I feel she should have been in the show more, because I think it was pretty obvious she and Helen were very good friends. She's been around the Sanctuary for an undisclosed amount of time, and has been there while everyone else has, so she knows them all, probably pretty well. Plus, mer are very cool.
More family dynamic between Helen, Biggie, Henry, and Ashley. They were a family long before Will, Kate, and anyone else showed up. We didn't really see the family dynamic between the four of them. Helen and Biggie raised two children together. Henry and Ashley were obviously siblings. There needed to be more.
More flashbacks of the Five. I LOVE the Five and there's so much untapped potential with them. James died in the second episode he was in and Nigel was hardly in there at all. But they cared about and loved each other and had adventures beyond the Source blood and the Ripper. We needed to see more of all that.
Less Will being an ass. I don't hate Will, but Season 4 did such a number on his character. There was no reason for him to be such an ass in Fugue about the situation. Then The Depths made it even worse. He needed to be nicer to Helen, especially after everything she did for him. He needed to be nicer.
Ended things with Druitt differently. I felt it was a complete turnaround on him to have him want to go to the past so he could be with Helen. I mean, he probably wouldn't have wanted to be the Ripper and staying with Helen would have been a result of that. I'm all for Teslen, but they didn't need to end things with John the way they did.
Had to think hard on these, but enjoyed really picking apart my views! Thanks for asking! ❤️

Do you like Nessian?
I don’t. He insults her, never stands up for her, forces her to wear clothes that she doesn't want to, locks her up "for her own good" and sexualizes her so much that it was uncomfortable to read. I truly hope Elain’s relationship is better, because neither of her sisters married men that are good to them.
Oh god, the ultimate question.
So, I stumbled into acotar right after acomaf was published. I wrote A BUNCH of Nessian fic (which is, I think? still some of my most read stuff but the sw rarepairs are hilariously catching up).
But I don't ship canon Nessian even a little bit.
For just....a huge list of reasons. I hated their book. It was, to me, not just bizarrely badly written (did she get a new editor in the last few years? did she get a more advantageous contract? WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY DO THE SEX SCENES READ LIKE CLICHED STRAIGHT PORNOS WRITTEN BY A DUDE IN HALF AN AFTERNOON), but also egregiously shitty.
You can't dedicate a book to recovery and then publish hundreds of pages about a vulnerable, grieving, suicidal woman being absolutely crushed and molded into someone else's expectations and call it a tour de force.
Nesta's not healed...she's trapped, and the physical safety of her situation depends on her submission. It's a nightmare, not a romance.
I think when we had these scarce details and searing attraction to go on, it was really easily to fill-in almost classic romance into what we didn't know. OF COURSE, Cassian likes Nesta along with wanting to fuck her. OF COURSE, he thinks it's amazing she's a powerful survivor instead of being so immature that threatens him. OF COURSE HE'D NEVER LET PEOPLE HURT HER- OF COURSE, he understands her pain and trauma having lived through similar things, OF COURSE HE LOVES HER-
And then, in canon, none of that was true.
Probably, I should have known from the first insane scene where Cassian is too scared to let Morrigan see him holding Nesta's hand that it was a ship doomed.
Which actually- can we talk about how axing the original plan for Mor's character fucks up...all the ships? Nearly?
Quick roundup: ACOMAF puts in the romance work for something...between Cas, Az, and Mor. It's not once, it's over and over again- there's weird jealousy! there's all three of them, dancing together in a mirror to Feyre dancing with Rhys all night. There's longing and touching and care- there are not people who had a romantic fallout five hundred years ago, these are people PINING-
and for about ten seconds, the narrative cannot decide in what direction that pining goes, which, I'm sorry, I love. Either bat boy being the (probably grossly)Conflicted Bi at least makes more sense than what we got.
But- and really, we'll never know- somewhere between the books we get Mor as a queer character. Which YES! GREAT, GIMME, IN FACT THAT MAKES IT BETTER-
But it's written so badly and weirdly that it reframes everything.
(sidenote but the idea of writing a world where immortal beings are fine fucking across species but cannot fathom queerness is just. deranged. these books are somehow straighter than books that don't even bother TRYING to include queer identities and it baffles me)
We go from Morrigan: shining bright defiant survivor to....Morrigan, who loves her found family but is afraid of them?? Who slept with Cassian and continues to treat him like her de facto boyfriend and vice versa but... isn't and has never been attracted to him or felt for him romantically??
Again, most of this is just bad writing. The unwillingness say lesbian leave us in the dark: is Mor bi? is Mor sexually attracted to more than one gender but romantically attracted to women? is Mor a lesbian who forces herself to have the relationships expected of her??
The narrative seems to lean toward the later, unfortunately. So: Mor/Cas... toxic bearding, cool. Mor/Az... creepy and an active source of fear. Mor/Az/Cas.... maybe not even a friendship.
And then it ripples out! Once Mor is written as queer (I'm sticking with the blanket term because really, I don't know and I'm unsure the books know), the story seems to lose track of her entire character and it effects all the other characters.
Az/Elain... is Azriel literally just. Fixing on Unavailable Blonde Women 2, psychic boogaloo?? Az/Gwyn... I'm sorry, you want a survivor to hook up with a man who has spent 5OO YEARS IGNORING A WOMAN'S WISHES/CUES/BOUNDARIES???
Cas/Nesta: IS THERE A GREATER RED FLAG THAN A MAN INSISTING YOUR TIME BELONGS TO HIM WHILE HE IS ACTIVELY IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH SOMEONE ELSE???
If we're supposed to believe Cassian is in love with Nesta and not Morrigan maybe he should prioritize her...once?
It's not even about Mor, but that's what breaks the fantasty of fanon Nessian- Cassian does not care enough to even, at minimum, be bothered his friends are horrifically rude right to Nesta's face. Its behavior a mature person might notice and be bothering was being directed at a stranger, much less the mystical true love of his immortal life.
As for Elain, I would like to say I have high hopes, but I don't. If the duel nightmares of both Azriel's and Cassian's POV say anything, it's that once a character is slated into Main Romantic Man they all morph into the same character....which is going to strip, most, if not everything, we like from Lucien.

How to Clear a Dating Sim as a Side Character - By Dalzo (6.5/10)
Tumblr media
Well, well, well. We have a real predicament here. First, this is a harem. Harems annoy me when they get too big. The only big harems that can work are comedic ones. Our heroine here seduces like ten men (and women). She is pretty cool but keeping track of everything and the huge cast is exhausting. Also. The second problem is uh...haha. Oops. I don't like the main love interest. I like the asshole prince character better.
What a mess.
Eveness Harin is the Saintess. She was sold to the temple by her family after her powers were discovered. She has no backbone, no desire for romance, and she's extremely conservative. She's the triple SSS hard route protagonist in a successful otome game series called Midnight. It's a very highly rated game. The developers added Harin's route as an Easter egg. It's not meant to be enjoyed. It's a challenge for hardcore gamers. Harin is doomed to fail and die 99.9999% of the time because her route is too damn hard. One day Harin awakens with a different soul. The soul of a gamer who died after a long otome gaming session. So now she has a higher chance of survival because she knows what the plot is.
Tumblr media
I wanna cry and scream. Eveness Harin was incredibly interesting. She was raised by an abusive high priest to become the perfect Saintess, and she did it. The people adore her. She is a symbol of morality and justice for all. Only she can cure the deadly magical disease that rips people apart (after they use too much magic). She's invaluable and beloved because she has saved thousands of mages from death. Her devotion made her into a weirdo. She fell in love with Prince Yuri, in a distant kind of way. She fawns over him and watches him from under her veil. Her route is near impossible because of course the Saintess can't get married. The prince would have to be willing to break the rules to have her, and he just finds her annoying. Harin became awkward, quiet, and weak because she's a hard worker. (and her life sucks)
Tumblr media
Her purification powers drained her energy too much. She can't even take a short walk without feeling ill. The other noblewomen think she's an ugly hag because of her veil. She's kind of a pushover because of her upbringing, so she never fights back. The abusive asshole who raised her gives her a potion. A mind control potion to use on the prince. She doesn't quite understand love but she wants his attention so she uses it and she's executed. The Prince does it gleefully because he thinks Harin is a willing puppet, but she never knew how evil the temple really was. They were using her good reputation and hard work to do evil crap behind closed doors....For the love of Jesus pisspants Christ please write the story I just described. Enough of this reincarnation harem crap.
I'll miss you Harin, but I have to talk about the actual plot we get now.
Tumblr media
Anyways the otome gamer girl boss is pretty good. She's ok, ok? She's alright. She knows the temple is evil so she immediately tries to run. The Saintess has actual duties to attend to so she can leave to work. She decides to romance Daniel. He's a really nice and religious man. He likes Harin but he's too faithful to see the saint as a woman. He develops a giant crush on her. It's pretty cute, and I completely understand why a relationship doesn't develop. He's too religious to kiss a godly woman.
Tumblr media
Harin was gorgeous under her veil all along. Hooray. The hardcore gamer gets to enjoy her face and power. Hooray. Beatrice, the true protagonist, almost immediately becomes her best friend. Hooray. Harin avoids the master of the magic tower because she knows how scary he is, but her cute stubbornness steals his heart. Hooray. One of the love interests actually gets turned into a plot device bodyguard, which is genuinely funny. Like he doesn't even get any scenes with her. He serves the master of the tower and he protects Harin on his behalf. He swoops in when the Master is too busy to swoop.
Lol.
Tumblr media
This is the harem in the original game. Beatrice is unrecognisable. In this plotline Beatrice just claps and compliments the new Harim. She's not a wicked foe or an enemy at all. Everybody is interested in Harim, because she changed. She's so much better now. She's not a spineless, religious, abused loser anymore. Hooray. It's not like watching characters heal and leave their abusers is satisfying or anything. Just give her body to a gamer girl boss. Who cares?
Tumblr media
Prince Yuri is the only character who doesn't immediately love gamer girl boss. His mother was murdered by the corrupt temple. Harin is the symbol of that temple. He knows she's evil. He can't let go. He tries to foil her (innocent?) plans. He stalks her while she rolls her eyes like a girl boss. He's genuinely worried about what this evil temple is going to do to his country. Harin is only interested in eloping to the desert with Daniel. Also she doesn't love Daniel. She's just using him to get away from the execution ending. It's actually pretty fucked up if you think about it. Like some of these characters have depth and emotional issues. There's actual political problems in the country, but of course new Harin just cares about her own survival. That's fine but uh...the world building here is half decent. I feel bad for these characters. I want Yuri to get his revenge. He wanders around outside sometimes. He sleepwalks and looks for his dead mom because losing her traumatized him too much. Harin just thinks he's an annoying jerk.....but they are the most similar pair in the harem cast. She hates the evil temple and he does too. Sadly, that doesn't mean anything because the master of the magic tower is sooooo hooottt.
Tumblr media
The main love interest isn't that bad. He's not boring. He's just too much. He has special eyes that can drive you insane if you look directly into them. He has every kind of magic. He's secretly a god. His puppet body (Duke Joshua) is currently the prime minister of the country. He hides from his subordinates because he doesn't want anybody to realize that one guy controls magic and politics.
Tumblr media
He starts to stalk Harin. I realized he was the yandere a little too late, because I didn't care. His love for new Harin is very...bleh. He seems to know that her soul is new, and he doesn't give a shit about the actual Harin that is gone forever. He and his lackey (pictured above) solve most of Harin's problems for her. It gets boring and I noticed something. Everything Harin does on her own is inconsequential. She never does anything relevant on her own. The Master (Adam) is always there helping if something important is happening.
I don't like that.
Tumblr media
Oooh! Sudden side plot! The princess is obsessed with Adam. Oooooooo. That's totally scary even though we already know that Adam is literally god and he can kill her no problem. Harin goes into the princesses salon in a pretty white dress. Yuri is there and that's when I realized I liked him. He's the better yandere. He has a really good reason to be obsessed with Harin. She's connected to his mother's death. She has a crush on him (in the other timelines) which disturbs him and repulses him. Which makes him obsess over her every move, because he's convinced that she's more evil than a demon. It would be so cool to see Yuri accept that she was a pawn who truly fell for him....but no. Gamer girl boss time.
Anyway. Master Adam starts..... slicing down trees???? Whenever Harin gets hurt or somebody flirts with her. Again. That's really lame yandere shit. He stays in the shadows and uh...chops trees when the Princess suggests that Harin should break tradition and marry someone. That is pretty yandere but it feels off. He also kills random dudes for her but...yawn. Feels a little eh...especially compared to the plot I could have enjoyed if Korean authors weren't COWARDS who think reincarnation is the only type of plot that exists....

for the ask game--top ten danganronpa characters? from across all the games! :D
I feel like my answers might be a little bit basic bitch... But, if I like them, I like them, I guess.
1 - Hajime Hinata, ngl I adore all the protagonists but there's just something about Hajime that makes me so mentally ill. Like, if I think about his story for too long, I will cry. Just... I dunno the fact that his lack of self worth lead him to make a decision like that is heartbreaking. The older I get, the more I realise just how stupid and damaging the Hope's Peak system is.
2 - Shuichi Saihara, look... I love shy, quiet and reserved male characters, I love blue haired characters, I love detectives... The moment I saw Shuichi, I felt as if he had been made for me, and goddammit it worked because I love this boy. His development over the story is so good and I love how he bounces off all the other characters. I don't even know how to explain it, I just love him.
3 - Makoto Naegi, yes the three protag boys are my top three but that's probably because we get to hear their thoughts on everything throughout the game and that adds so much personality to everything. But Naegi's such a sweetheart and he's so cute. I feel like, even though he's basically the main protagonist of the whole series and he matures a lot in the DR3 anime... He's still everyone's baby boy. Also, his inner monologues when you investigate everything are just so funny.
4 - Kokichi Ouma, I fucking love this lil gremlin man. It makes me a little sad when people call him Komaeda 2.0 because I feel like the only thing they have in common is that they're antagonistic characters but other than that... Not really similar. But he is by far one of the most entertaining characters in the whole series, he steals the show in every scene he's in. And he, along with Kaito, perfectly embodies the themes of V3, with the whole truth vs lies and faith vs logic stuff going on and then Shuichi right in the middle, it makes for really interesting conflicts and character moments. Also, I wholeheartedly adore both the English and Japanese dubs for all of the games, but I just say that Derek Stephen Prince's performance as Kokichi is one of the best I've ever heard, he is clearly loving every single second of it and it makes Kokichi all the more entertaining.
5 - Chiaki Nanami, let's get the obvious part out of the way: she is adorable. I love her design, I love her personality, I love her voice, I love her little "hey hey" voiceline... She's just so cute, okay? But she's such a great character because she and Hajime seem to be able to bring everyone together but in very different ways and despite her more laid-back personality, she will immediately step in to calm things down - like when she smacked Akane when she attacked Nagito. Plus she's honestly so intelligent??? Like she is usually one of the first people to figure things out... But she's also the same girl that ate glue. And I love that duality. And while I have very mixed feelings on the DR3 anime, Chiaki was fantastic, seeing her continue to wait for Hajime after he had signed up for the Project broke my heart... But not as much as that one episode I just can't bring myself to ever rewatch.
6 - Nagito Komaeda, where do I even start with this fuckin guy??? He truly is one of the characters of all time. I feel kinda bad that he's ended up as such a meme because he is genuinely such a complicated character, but with some of the shit he does throughout the series, I am really not surprised he ended up like that. I do really want to explain why I love him so much but to do so would require an entire goddamn essay, so I won't. Also just... Megumi Ogata's voice. That's all. I love her performances.
7 - Kyoko Kirigiri, I said it before and I'll say it again: I love detectives. Honestly, I adore Kirigiri so much... Like I played the first game when I was thirteen and I had the biggest crush on Kyoko, I honestly don't understand how it took me an extra year to figure out I like women... But seriously, I love her design and colour scheme, her voice is gorgeous and I just love her relationship with Naegi so much.
8 - Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu, again the character development for this guy is just so good. I really didn't think anything of him at the beginning of the game but by the end of the game I adored him. I love his relationship with Hajime and how, by the final few chapters, him, Hajime and Kazuichi are like a lil trio who stick together. And again, Derek Stephen Prince... Goddamn, his performance in the Chapter 2 trial ripped my heart out.
9 - Kiibo, I just love this lil robot guy. I feel kinda bad for him for all the stuff he goes through during the story. Like he keeps getting really excited to show off his features but then everyone's just like "... Is that it?" And let's not forget how everyone used him to a battering ram to break open that water tank and just fucking threw him at it. The boy's been through a lot, most of it from Kokichi tbh. But he's such a cute character and his pride of being a robot and love for his creator is so sweet. Also, that little section in chapter 4 where Monotaro gets confused and acts like Kiibo is his dad is really cute, I remember a manga anthology did a chapter about that scenario and it was adorable.
10 - Nagisa Shingetsu, I really like not as many people pay attention to Another Episode and I get it, it's a spin-off with a completely different playstyle. Hell, I prefer the main games over this game too. But wow, the Warriors of Hope make me feel so bad whenever I play this game. Like, y'know when something is so upsetting, it causes a pit in your stomach? Yeah, that's these kids backstories... All of them make me feel awful but I got really attached to Nagisa because he's one of the ones that stuck around the longest and he had that moment of allowing Komaru to escape but then basically everyone around him manipulates him to make him do what they want and completely mess him up and it just hurts to watch. And it's just disgusting that his father refers to him as 'the subject' not 'Nagisa' not 'my son' just 'the subject'... I just wanna give him a hug... He deserves one after all the shit he's been put through.

Gonna Be Okay - Brent Morgan
"When You lose faith in everything you ever knew, don't give up on you. When life gets overwhelming, relying on yourself is hard to do, but don't give up on you, no. If you've been lost and loney, ashamed to be alone with only you, with no one left to lose, If it is the last thing that you do, don't give up on you."
Super Fly - 24K
Well the lyrics aren't the thing I like about this one, it is more the feeling I get when I listen to the song. It pumps me up a little bit and is quite energizing.
Flowers - Miley Cyrus
My personal anthem 😅 I guess I don't need to explain this one as the most of you already know the lyrics. This song is just so perfect.
Rose Colored Glasses - The Collection
"So give me those rose-colored glasses When I look back at me and you"
It is a nice way to look back at a past relationship. We define what was good and what was bad, these are our memories and sometimes it is okay to look back and see the good and not only the bad things that lead to the breakup, as long as we don't forget there were reasons for the falling apart.
Candy - NCT Dream
The lyrics are...well...he wants to break up, but in the end, he tells her he just loves her...Well, I like the vibe of the song. It makes me smile, even though I don't really understand it.
Runaway to Mars - TALK
This is not a "I am doing fine song", but I love singing this one out loud! It feels SO good! And it is such a great song! I love his strong voice and the build-up and this whole song!
It only gets better - WILD
"Now I finally, finally, finally, finally know Who I used to be and where I wanna go Now I finally, finally, finally, finally know Ooh, woo, ooh, woo Oh, I can't believe it only gets better And better, and better Every single day of my life"
My mantra!
Leaves - Ben&Ben
Perhaps you know the series "Gaya Sa Pelikula" aka "Like in the movies". There is this beautiful kiss scene, accompanied by the song "Ride Home" by Ben&Ben and I fell in love with them. They make so good music and this one is just beautiful.
Alive - The Scarlet Opera
My second anthem and mantra! This song gives me life and energy and self love and happiness and all the fucking good feelings!
See the light - Stephen Sanchez
And again a song I just feel good listening to without listening too closely to the lyrics 😅 I love to sing (I don't care that I can't sing and my walls are thin like cardboard, my neighbours haven't complained, yet) and this is one of the best songs to sing along!
This was fun! And I haven't listen to any music for the last couple days, so I am really enjoying my good-vibes-playlist to the max right now 😅 Music is just one of the greatest things ever to exist in this stupid world!
For my tags, as always, just ignore me if you've already done this one or just don't want to 😊 And if you want to do this, you can do just one, you don't need to combine this like I have 🙈
I tag: @smittenskitten @talays-portkey @i-got-the-feels @piningintrovert @pose4photoml @pharawee @vera9 @ellsieee @maxescheibechlinichacheli @25shadesoffebruary

Ok, fresh thoughts (might change later because you know, fresh emotions are never the most reliable in the long term but still)
OOTD: well........ It's a disappointment. I mean you can find a bit of their rock signature but it's not doing for me for various reasons. Ironically Scream is my favourite TT and it's arguably their least Rock song, but their signature is still here. But here the song sounds messy. Why are music producers nowadays unable to give us a well structured song anymore???? I mean I know the answer, it's the tiktokification of music but I'm not gonna start that debate now, just no. The singing part are very good thoug, and I know now why they chose this part for the medley, because it's the best part. I love Yoohyeon and Handong parts, they honestly slay it and it's kinda new for me to find anyone having better "rock parts" than Siyeon. Anyway, I understand the need to do different stuff and renew yourself, and I'm probably too negative but usually when you renew yourself it's to do something different. And the problem is that while it's different for Dreamcatcher, it just sounds plain basic for the mainstream Kpop scene. Like sorry but many groups have done this. I'm not gonna say it's bad because taste is subjective (also I do listen to bp so I don't think I'm legitimate to say what's good or bad djdjdndjdns), I just don't expect this for them. And the lyrics.... That's the worst fucking part. Tbh it's not a surprise at all. When I saw "OOTD" I knew it was gonna be cringe. I just kept my mouth shut because I don't like giving an opinion on a 30 seconds snippet. Also I find 90% of the English lyrics in Kpop cringe, it doesn't stop me from listening, I just pretend I don't understand lmao. Also, Everglow could have pulled something with these lyrics tbh (no shade, I love Everglow, it's their signature brand and they do it better than anyone else imo). The MV goes well with the music so yes it's not mindblowing, and I was expecting something more after the hype they pulled before the comeback. Gotta say the editing is absolutely insane and whoever worked on it deserves more recognition. Also it's visually way more pleasing to watch than Maison or Vision. And no matter what the concept is, the girls are always pulling it flawlessly. They are genuinely so good at adapting to whatever they have to work with it. Also the choreography is interesting. Anyway, what I'm saying is that it's pretty basic and I guess that's the curse of loving an artist, it's that you always have higher expectations for them than anyone else.
Rising: I said it and I will say it again. It should have been the title track. I know there's little chance they will ever have a rock heavy song as the TT again because now they are more popular and they have to cater to the general audience and their sensitive ears. I mean Kpop, American music or whatever, heavier songs are always ignored by mainstream audiences. So yeah it's not a surprise that they decided to choose a sound that's already familiar for a general public, with just a bit of rock underneath to satisfy everyone and called it a day. At least I can listen Rising ten times a day if I want.
Shatter: I don't really have an opinion on it. I just don't have any comparison in DC's discography or my own music to say anything. They tried something different and I appreciate them for that.
We Are Young: they just are so good with nostalgic EDM songs aren't they???? I'm gonna need it when I feel down.
Anyway, overall the album is good, proof that the producers do in fact produce good music when we let them do so, I just think the title track is more made for general audience first. And I mean, it's a very competitive industry, if you want to survive you have to adapt to what the public is able to digest. What I really mean, is fuck capitalism.
Now that I've complained a lot, you are about to witness the biggest hypocrite move from me because of course I'm gonna reblog everything, gif everything and being always lovey dovey from them. You need to understand that my rational brain and my fan brain are two different entities lmao

The Alleged Con Log
(This isn't gonna be a full recap in chronological order, like my first one, and like many of the wonderful and amazing logs I've read thus far. Part of that is because I didn't end up "doing" all that much. But the larger part is that what I want to do here is talk about what it meant to me, more than what happened.)
(I'm also going to omit any names out of precaution, because I don't want to publicize anything without consent.)
(But, if you recognize yourself, hi! I enjoyed our interactions at the con and I am okay with you interacting with this post!)
So. I went to Charmed.
Now, I'm fairly new to this community; or I should say, to being active in this community. I fully delurked somewhere around summer or autumn 2020 (I wonder how many of us took the panini as incentive to chase after a dream?) but I've been around some of the spaces for a much longer time. Like, an "I remember when the MCForum started requiring logins" time. And from the first time I heard about the con scene, I knew I wanted to get there someday.
I say get there, because it felt so far out of reach for me, back in the day. I was rocking a fun mix of social anxiety, common-or-garden anxiety and imposter syndrome that led to me convincing myself that 1) I would never tell anyone about this interest of mine, and 2) even if I did, I would never be brave enough to actually join the community "for real".
(Goes to show that your brain lies to you, huh? Something something "you are braver than you think" etcetera.)
Given all that, I knew this con was going to be a Moment for me, like a huge one. I had gone online the past two years, but it didn't feel like enough. I knew that I wanted to be there. I had almost ended up going in-person in 2022, but pulled out at the last second in the face of COVID numbers and general travel uneasiness.
I promised myself it wasn't going to happen this time. Even while going through a bout of depression over the holidays, I focused on the idea that I wasn't going to miss out this time. To paraphrase the Mountain Goats song, I was gonna make to this con if it killed me.
I did make it, and I am so, so glad that I did.
I would spend the next few days doing my best to balance between gently pushing myself and respecting my energy. I didn't end up hiding in my room too much of the weekend, a fact I'm honestly pretty proud of. And I talked to people! Actual, live people that exist in real life!
(Sidebar: that part was a trip for me, initially, as someone so used to online. On the day I arrived at the hotel, within ten seconds of getting in I spotted a Famous Community Person and audibly went "oh shit". Fortunately, I met them briefly later on and was able to apologize. They told me they hadn't noticed. Phew! 😅)
The classes I went to were uniformly great; I came away with a whole bunch of notes containing actual, applicable advice. But for me the difference in being there were the people. All those I met were friendly and very welcoming to little old newcomer me. I pushed myself to engage in conversation in the hallways when I had the energy for it, and was rewarded every time. I even managed to link up with a few people from back home (there are ones of us! literally ones of us!), and talk about the possibility of local events happening in the near future.
Other highlights, in no particular order (linear time is boring anyway!):
Going to an induction class and realizing "Hey, I understand this. I could do this. I can do this."
One particular class resonating with me on a personal level (kinda took me by surprise actually) and leaving me with a very interesting reading list
Being dropped in front of a class – for the first time in-person, actually – and the person who did it reassuring me that everything was Okay™ afterwards and I hadn't imposed on them. Thank you for helping reel in my brain goblins!
Being invited to a lowkey room hangout that was exactly what I needed after a long first day – and meeting lots of positively lovely folk there and also I bought the coolest cat pin
Nerdy conversations about the state of the MCU on the way to the Gallery
Meeting several people in the community who were and are sources of inspiration, and noticing that they're all absolutely lovely humans on top of that
By my standards, I burned brightly all weekend, and by the end I was pretty spent. But I did it.
In closing, here's the part where I reassure my spicy brain that I Did The Thing Correctly. Going into this, I had these goals written down:
Learn Things
Be Social
Say Hi To People I Know From Online (As Much As Possible)
Go To At Least One Evening Event
Participate In One (1) Activity Related To Writing
Write a con log afterwards and post it somewhere (hey that's this one!)
(Bonus) Do Some IRL Trancing
Of those modest goals, I accomplished checks notes all of them. Huh!
(Well, at least one person I know from online I didn't get to say hi to. They looked busy, I didn't want to intrude! Next time, Gadget…)
Of course, there's things I wish I could have done, people I wish I could have connected to. Of course, I feel like my fears got in my way, more than a few times. Of course, I wanna do more next year. Because there will be a next year for me. Many of them, if I have my way. Hell, I'm even thinking about this summer…
But for now, I just want to focus on gratitude. Just existing in this space is life-giving to me, and I hope to be able to do it so much more.
Ice, you are officially broken.
Thank you for reading!

All this is making me think, if u want u should write a scene after the baby kicking when they finally talk and Jackson apologizes for the custody fight thing, for treating her like an inferior doctor, and it comes out the restraining order was because she was scared and didn’t trust the Avery’s because she heard Catherine. He can apologize for that too. Lots of apologizes w both and talking and more baby kicking. I also don’t think he’d want to leave her after the kicks either.
(second part of the prompt) For the baby kick thing I just sent, I also meant.. April is tired from a long day, and Jackson would want to get her home if she’ll let him. And she was also scared because she thought something was wrong, but he realizes that happened after they argued about stealing her patient. And he had no clue. he wants to help now, needs to help, and ask her please let him help
___
This baby can kick.
He's not a sap (his divorce seems to have hardened him way beyond measure), but these are maybe the best four words in all of the English language. The sensation of their child kicking against his palm is enough to bring tears to his eyes, and he spends the next ten minutes in a silent dialogue with the little one, trying to convey all the love he already feels for them. He could easily stand here all night, with his family, but April yawns and he suddenly feels selfish. She's pregnant, and she shouldn't stand in a parking lot for hours just to appease her ex-husband.
She gives him a tired, tentative smile, and before he can remember the restraining order, he blurts out "Can I drive you home?"
April widens his eyes and he shakes his head. "Sorry, I forgot, it's okay, I'll let you–"
"No, I'm so sorry about the restraining order, Jackson. It was really stupid. I was scared, and I overheard your mother, and the lawyer said so many things about you getting full custody, and I panicked. I should have gone to talk to you," but I don't know how to talk to you anymore, she adds in her head.
"I'm sorry too, about my mom. And well, I was an ass, too. I was just so lost and angry and I didn't know what to do, and..."
"And you kept remembering what happened last time?"
He nods, because she's the only person who can understand. It's a shame they're not good at communicating, because things are always easier when they just talk and find out they feel the same, they just express it in very different ways.
It's only later, when he drops her off and makes sure she's settled in their former appartment, finding excuses to stay, that he gathers the courage to ask if he can touch her belly, touch her again, because he's still unsettled and he needs to know their baby is fine. She lets him, and for the first time in what feels like forever, she opens up, telling him about how scared she was. How she thought the kicks meant that there was something wrong with this one too, and that this time it would be all her fault for not doing the necessary exams sooner. How relieved she was when Arizona did an ultrasound, how their little baby is already perfect. How she knew that she should talk to him and not fight, because their baby didn't deserve this. How she already felt like an inadequate mom, because I need to know I'm able to protect that child (and he wants to tell her she did everything to protect their brother too, but he doesn't, not wanting to interrupt her).
He doesn't say a word, but each sentence breaks his heart a little bit more. Because she was suffering and he had not clue, and he should have been there. He should have been there to freak out with her and rush her to OB for a scan, he should have been relieved with her, and what did he do instead? Cause her more stress and anguish that what she was already feeling, complicating an already complicated situation? Like he told her earlier, he doesn't like the guy he's turning into.
"I want to be better at this. To be here for the little one, be here for you. If you'll let me."
Her heart bursts, and she closes her eyes. The kick she feels (the baby seems to like their father's voice), that he feels too against his hand, is like a anchor, centering her, and for a minute, she can almost believe everything is going to be alright.

yayy you watched yellowjackets 💕💕 if you don't mind me asking.. do you already have fave characters /ships?
Sorry I left this waiting for a bit! I actually wanted to watch a second time before I answered, haha.
I'm SO obsessed with Yellowjackets, I've been thinking about it so much since I finished it. It only took me two days to mainline all ten episodes, and I was hooked from the very first scene. So thank you for posting about it, because if you (and a few others) hadn't, I never would've discovered it!
It's so hard to choose a favorite character, I love them all so much. They're all so compelling, and fucked up, and strangely likeable despite all of their very evident flaws. Even with how manipulative and single-minded they can all be, I still feel so much for them because of everything they went through as teens, and because the actresses (the adult versions and teen versions) are doing such an incredible job of making their characters believable.
My heart is telling me that Natalie is my favorite. I've always had a soft spot for jaded alternative girls (Octavia Blake, Effy Stonem, Nico Minoru, Rue Bennett - the list is endless) and I feel like Natalie is so tragically lovable. Getting to see that horrible bit of backstory about her home life, and her father's death, just made it so painfully clear why Nat was messed up before she even got on that plane. It makes who she becomes as an adult all the more understandable, and heartbreaking.
And yet, I think she manages to (at least, so far as the story stands post s1 and pre s2) maintain her levelheadedness, kindness, and compassion in places where the other girls resort to impulse, cruelty, and carelessness, especially when it comes to the way they all deal with their grief after the crash. Plus I just love a burnout druggie character, y'all. They hit me where I live, and when it's done well, I'm pretty much doomed to love that character regardless. (Let's not examine the "why" of that one too closely, lol.)
That being said, I still love all of the others. I don't really have anyone I truly dislike. The closest might be Misty, but I love how batshit insane she is, and how chaotic her character is, because it adds a lot more tension and conflict. But she's definitely the character I'd want to like, kick it with the least. I hope we find out more about Van, Lottie, Mari, and Akilah next season. I really like the core four, but I'm also very curious about the others who were in the crash.
In terms of ships, only a small amount of time in the Yellowjackets tags tells me that my tastes are very common. I LOVE Shauna/Jackie (god the angst and pain and absolute heartbreak,) really loved seeing Taissa/Van (the whole wolf incident + everything that happened after was so horrible and then so touching,) and have a very fun time imagining Natalie/Misty (adult versions) as a very chaotic couple.
I can't wait until s2, I feel so bad for everyone who has had to wait this long. I don't know how I'm going to manage with one episode a week! This show was unbelievably binge-able and such a wild ride, from moment one to the very end.
Thanks for the ask! I can't wait to chat with you about s2 soon!!

I haven't come here to SCREAM about the last couple of chapters, so I'm here to fix it!
An incomplete list of the things I loved about chapter 48:
EVERYTHING OMFG
Lmao no but seriously: the first part was so hard to read but so worth the wait!! I was clutching my phone without being able to look away because it was so we'll written and it broke my heart all over agai!
Max calling him for hours till he answered bc "They have always been equally obsessed with each other"😭😭
"What else to do but be consumed by Max Lightwood-Bane?" PLS SIR STOP I'M ALREADY CRYING
The whole fucking scene where David's tells Mallory she won't win because she doesn't have what it takes to love Max and telling her that whatever she does, he will undo and he will find his way back to him. I shit you not, I've read that part at least 7 times by now. I'M OBSSESED
The bit with the knife. IT MAKES SENSE NOW AND I WISH IT DIDN'T. GET THIS BABY A BREAK😭. Also now I understand why he wore the long-sleeved tshirts because it made AJ cry :)
I read that someone had a theory that Lance returned for his pink pony and that was why he was at the house and why David threw it away and I would like to personally congratulate them for guessing it tbh bc for me it clicked s second before jdhdkd
I love the way we see David's pain and his trauma from his POV as something he's still trying to understand and work around and how that pain only answers to him, so doing all this by himself was kinda necessary.
When Max asked him if he loved anyone else other than him, the answer seemed so simple. 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
"I don't need a reason to love you. I never have. You existing is reason enough for me to love you." Stay with someone who loves you for the simple fact that you exist 💙
David moved forward at that. He didn't know how not to. I love how he thinks this or "How could he refuse?" "How could he say no to that?" "How could he deny when it was Max who asked?" In every universe because YES HE'S NEVER BEEN ABLE GO LET GO OF THIS MAN
The fact that David is always refered as "greedy" because he never has enough of Max is everything to me and in this essay I will-
The whole scene where David was touching Max HOLY FUCK IT WAS EVERYTHING I COULDN'T STOP READING IT AND AT THE SAME TIME I FEEL I MUST LOOK AWAY BECAUSE ITS SO INTIMATE!
AJ GOT THE ROLE!!! FUCK YES I'M SO PROUD OF MY BABY🥺🥺
The fucking white lilies tattoo😭 and the only blooming one being all around David's name. You really said I'm not done with flower symbolism and I love you for that💙
Arthur walking in on them and being like why yes this make sense they just had a heartfelt confession will be in my top ten favorite moments jdhsjsjsj
"Goodnight, mon ange" I'm in tears right now ok?!? It's the second time we've heard present David say it (the first one at the Maldives counts?) And it just turned into my favorite thing 🥺🥺🥺🥺
This was what it felt like to be alive. He had almost forgotten. David chuckled to himself and covered his mouth. HE FEELS ALIVE!! I AM BEING SO NORMAL ABOUT THIS!!
The wink at lbaf left me looking at my ceiling for like 15 minutes so I think that tells you everything you should know.
I loved everything about it. The way you give so much emotion and intensity to a chapter and the beautiful way you write it mean so much to me. Thank you for this wind story once again 💙
Thank you. I cri 🥺🥺🥺
Here is a song I listened to over and over when I wrote this chapter (especially when I wrote the flashback scene) - Indila - Tourner Dans Le Vide

I've read only one multi chapter ff featuring Daniela and I LOATHE the way her character was written so I'm gonna collect those Dani moments you have prepared like shiny little rocks.
Honestly I'd read a fic entirely focused on the Dimis and their relationship. Idk how that would work tho but I'm starving coz capcom gave me NOTHING.
Onto the ch5 comments:
Waiting for the moment (well not really) when the Reader won't wake up to one of the daughters invading their personal space first thing in the morning 😭
Cassandra can you CALM DOWN I'm too gay for that.
Tumblr media
"She did pull Daniela off of you, didn’t she?"
Girl took her sweet time there 🙄
The "why was that so attractive? What is wrong with you?" questions after Lady D almost spiked the poor maid's skull with her claws and then licked off the blood are a BIG REL.
I'm excited that AUNTIE DONNA FINALLY CAME TO HELP. It was cut tho I wonder if it was successful at any rate.
I'm not even trying to understand what's going on rn. It is what it is 😭 we're vibing🤙🏼 Just looking forward to the moment it'll make the slightest bit of sense (the 8 chapter then?). Unless in the meantime I'll get more clues to think of sth.
THE KISS AT THE END
And the realisation that oh no THEY FELT SOMETHING
Tumblr media
i have a feeling i know exactly which fic you're talking about LMAOOOO. i hate that the fandom seemingly collectively just agreed to write Dani and Cass horribly and completely OOC. they do them both so dirty and it's hard to find decent fics where they're just themselves
(i know i make Dani a little coo coo at first, but she does get much better <3 she means well, she's just an overly excited bundle of nerves)
that would be wonderful honestly, but yeah, i don't really know how anyone would go about it. that's why i like seeing/writing little headcanons on how they'd react in certain situations :D
anyways, onto your comments >:)
*it does start to happen less and less, but that really doesn't last long from what i can remember BAHA. Cass just likes annoying them, meanwhile Dani's love language is physical touch and she will make sure everyone knows it
*Cass knows exactly what she's doing and she's proud of it
*LISTEN SHE DIDN'T KNOW. i had someone else mention that, and i feel i should clarify that that scene in chapter four only lasted, like... maybe ten seconds? everything was being described so it seemed longer, but it didn't last super long
*i'll be real, i feel like that would be a lot of us if that happened LMAO. like, you know these cannibalistic women are horrible people, but god why are they so attractive- (and being treated with kindness from them certainly doesn't help)
*she gets more time in the future, i promise!! i love Donna dearly <33
*chapter eight is the reveal chapter (and more gets revealed sparingly after), but simply vibing is also good B) i made it intentionally difficult to really know what's going on because there's just so much, but some people have surprised me with guessing accurately bahaha
*i am a massive sucker for the trope of, "i definitely don't feel anything for this person! i'm just crazy! kissing them will mean nothing!" *kisses them* "oh my god. oh my god i'm so doomed." LMAOSJDLFHS
hope you've been enjoying so far!! <333
