I’ve read like almost all the angsty stucky fics (i’ve been doing this for years), so I just want to know if there’s anything new? Thank you so much.

Hello there!

(1) You've read almost ALL the angsty Stucky fics out there? HOW? I've been diligently working on that goal for years and I'm nowhere near close to achieving it (also it's kind of a moving target, so you know...). Do you ever sleep? Eat? 😜 (2) How new is 'new'? Any particular preferences? What level of angst are we talking here? Give me all the information, please, so I can find you the perfect fic!

Anyway, as always, I tried my best. Here we go:

All of these are fics that were either completed in 2022 or are so fresh out of the oven, they are currently being posted.

Prisoner One by ancientreader | E, 134K

Author's summary: Captain Steve Rogers is assigned to evaluate the security arrangements for an unusually dangerous prisoner. Of course, nothing is what it seems.

A truly original AU in which almost everything is the same: Steve is Captain America, Bucky is the Winter Soldier, they were both born in the 1910s & grew up in Brooklyn. Everything is the same, well, except for the fact that they never knew each other before the war. What happens when they both meet for the first time in the 21st Century, where everyone has an agenda and seemingly no one can be trusted? This is one of those fics that, even while your heart is hurting for the characters, makes you squeal with delight because it is so full of smart ideas, little details, and bits of characterization that subvert both canon and fanon interpretations.

Author's summary: Did he mean to—did Steve know, during that long march back from Azzano, that he slept the whole night with a hand through the open neckline of Bucky’s shirt? Each time Bucky woke, heart racing, he felt that heavy, certain weight against his chest and remembered who he was, and where he was supposed to be.

Bucky wanders between DC and Bucharest trying to understand himself, outrun his ghosts, and hide Steve from both. Steve won’t let him. And certain ghosts won’t let up.

A "classic" post-TWS Recovery/Up All Night to Get Bucky fic--and I mean that in the BEST way possible. Gorgeous writing, intense emotions, and a great understanding of the characters and their dynamic. The first part in particular floored me in a way that I didn't think could still happen to me after reading millions of words of Stucky fanfic. This story looked me in the eye and said "oh, so you think you've seen everything? You think you've become immune? Well, watch me as I tear your heart right out of your chest." To be fair, it then proceeded to slowly, gently put it back in again.

Bea is one of my top 3 all-time favorite writers for this ship and a self-described "peddler of smut and hard-won joy", and that's exactly it. Like all of her works, this is a smart, mature and empathicly written story about people who've endured horrific things, but who've persisted and kept a tight grip on their own humanity even in the face of unspeakable atrocities. It's also funny, and tender, and hot. An incredibly satisfying read that reminds you to never lose your sense of wonder in the world.

Which is why following Fury to the moon, passing on the shield, and leaving Bucky to discover himself seemed like the right answer. A beautiful, introspective story about Steve's state of mind post-Endgame. So quiet and yet so intense, with a lovely, soft ending. Featuring a Steve who has to figure out himself and how to be brave enough to truly live, and a Bucky who knows him, has always known him, and ultimately helps Steve to save himself and find happiness.

Hello! I accidentally deleted my pages for writing so I'm just gonna pin this post with all the info for the very few fanfics I have written and also anything I am going to post on here. MARVEL Bucky X Reader #1: After losing his arm in a car accident, Bucky Barnes struggles with every day tasks but after already having some hired help, he refuses to get more. Natasha however, isn't having any of it and goes out of her way to hire him a private chef.

#2: I don't like tea and other lies Bucky tells himself. Bucky wakes up in a strangers house after passing out on their doorstep after a particularly bad fight. He is resistant to their help but this stranger isn't having it and takes it upon themselves to get his stubborn ass back to the Avengers Tower

#3: This is not a safehouse. The mission goes horridly wrong to no-one's surprise and the safehouse is destroyed. Steve and Bucky follow Natasha to another safehouse, except that it's not and now it's time to meet Natasha's "old friend".

#4: Lessons in apologies and being a disaster by Bucky Barnes Being a superhero is hard and Bucky can't catch a break, he's just trying to get by and start enjoying his life. But a tense encounter with a person he mistakes as a reporter makes his relationship with his new neighbour all the more strenuous that it has to be. It's Sam to the rescue.

#5 An egg for a brain. (I fucking love this one and do intend to continue it.) Bucky is well versed with Murphy's Law but this is one of those times he thinks the world is just out to get him. An accident causes Bucky to lose all his memories except for those from before World War 2. Steve is the only person he knows, he's lost in a modern world that he dreamt of living in, is struggling with the fact he can't remember shit about who he is (everyone is quick to chime in though) and to top it off, he can't seem to face the woman he fell in love with. #6: A Serious Problem It's Tuesday and portals open above New York. Again. The first on the scene is not the Avengers or even any of the other local crime-fighting vigilantes. The first person appears seemingly out of nowhere, brandishing rebar and a fiery attitude. Of all people, it's Spider-Man who they say hi to while sprinting past covered in alien blood.

Stucky - Steve Rogers x Bucky Barnes (my beloved ship omg)

#1: Shit My Soulmate Listens To (The story of how Steve Rogers loses his mind, just a little. (Another one I intend to finish cos it's gonna be so good). It's not that Steve is a snob. Really, he isn't. It's just that he has good taste. And his Soulmate certainly does not. And he swears if he has to hear the same damn song one more time, he's going to punch someone.

#2 Becoming (My post-endgame somewhat fix-it that finally tackles the abandonment of Bucky by Steve). This is a story about heartbreak, grief, healing and self-discovery. Bucky knew that Steve wasn't returning after he put the stones back, but that didn't stop it from it hitting him like a truck. He takes a break from being a superhero, learns to be Bucky Barnes again and learns that some endings are actually beginnings.

#3: Doom. Or how Bucky Barnes got fucked over, lost an arm, went to Hell and came back laughing. (A Marvel and Doom video game crossover) Bucky Barnes has been imprisoned on the Mars UAC facility after defying his CO. He's not imprisoned though, he's a fucking test subject for a squirrely scientist named Arnim Zola whose didn't stop to think about the consequences of messing with Argent energy. After a mysterious explosion destroys the facility and leads to the worst infestation known to man, SHIELD sends the Avengers, a Rapid Response Tactical Squad led by Steve Rogers to gather intel and lock down the facility.

#4: A roommate AU Bucky responds to Steve's ad for a new roommate. It turns out food isn't just good for the soul but a fast track to the heart of the hottest man Bucky has ever met. #5: Atlas Shrugged All eyes are on Steve who frankly does not give a shit. His eyes instead are on the shield, the gaudy thing they insist is his and expect him to pick back up again even thought he doesn't remember a thing about why he picked it up in the first place. Bucky says it was because he's an idiot and never knows what's good for him. But Bucky is the only one who is against him picking it up again. "It's not your job." Bucky had said one night when they both couldn't sleep. His metal hand nursing the bottle of Vodka while he looked downright miserable. Undecided Ship #1: A Marvel and Fallout crossover, staring all the Avengers but my main man, Bucky Barnes The second the platform stops moving, Bucky’s knees buckle and he drops to the ground hard and grasps at his chest. Just like the platform, his breathing has all but stopped, panic setting in.

He gasps and gulps and tears flow quick. In all his years he has never felt desperation and grief as he does right now. All he hears are his own choked sobs on top of the silent hill and it scares him how silent everything is. Anywhere he looks there are signs of death and destruction despite the regrowing nature. Skeletons litter the ground, all the families he had passed on his way to the Vault all those years ago, and all the workers, even the Vault-Tec guy.

Instead of standing, Bucky scrambles over to the dirt around the platform, searching desperately for any signs of footprints, of life.

There are none.

summary: It's 1994 and Bucky Barnes is stuck in a dead-end job at Blockbuster trying to figure his life out. That is until a recently unfrozen Steve Rogers walks through the door and asks him for movie recommendations.

"You lookin' for something for your kid or your niece or… the kid you babysit?" The employee's nametag reads 'Bucky', and in a smaller font underneath is the word 'Manager'. "No." Steve frowns, then follows his glance up towards the sign that reads: CHILDREN'S. He picks up Snow White and shows it to the employee. "Found it." "Alright, dude. Whatever floats your boat. Lemme know if you need anything else. Your Cinderellas and your Sleepin' Beauties. That Jasmine chick from Aladdin is a pretty big hit." Bucky crosses his arms over his chest and that polo stretches a little. "Unless it's the dwarves that getcha goin'." Steve opens his mouth and then shuts it. "Um, what?" "Look, if you're gonna perve over cartoon girls, can you wait until you've rented them out? This is a family establishment."

Steve turns back to his friend, who seems to have lost his train of thought whilst ignoring the other soldiers, staring again at the leaves of the tree-canopy above. He’s clutching at Steve’s jacket sleeve. The light of the fires reflect through the trees onto the arches of his face, drawing even more focus to his glassy eyes and dilated pupils.

“What did you wanna’ talk to me about alone, Buck?”

Bucky turns to look blankly at him for a moment, as though he’s forgotten, before hissing in a breath, eyes clearing as much as they can in their drugged haze. He looks over Steve’s shoulder, tugs him unsuccessfully and unsteadily by his arm away from the truck at his back. “Pal? What are we-”

Bucky clenches his fingers tighter, and pulls him until he follows, stumbling against a tree farther away from the hustle. He lets go to practically hug the bark of the tree, looks up at the canopy and around him again. Steve, thinking him delirious, reaches out to check his temperature. Bucky’s eyes shoot to him as he does, bright and possessed.

“Is this real, Steve?” He asks, sounding like he’s almost begging. “Is this real? It feels real, like, like the tree and ---and you,” he clenches a hand around the zip of Steve’s jacket, digging the metal into his palm. “But not you at the same time. But you feel…Is this...? Tell me it’s real.”

Steve feels his face collapse, “God Bucky, yes, yes, this is real. I’m real. The tree is real, you are goddamn real, pal.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. I promise.”

“So I’m not…am I dead? It can be real - or feel real - if I’m dead with the after-life and all. Sister Judith always said-”

“You are not dead.” Steve says as firmly as he can before Bucky can start rambling, trapping Bucky’s sweaty head in between his hands until he looks at him properly. “You are not dead.”

PoliZ’s Bucky Barnes Bingo Round 3 Masterpost

This is my masterpost for round 3 of the @buckybarnesbingo - I am both delighted and a bit astonished that I got a blackout!! (Even without counting the two adopted squares from the Discord parties) I did swap out my AU: Coffee shop square for Canon Compliant at another party, and the Round Robin collaborative stories were a huge help as well.

All but 2 fills are fanfics - one is a Stuffed Marvels photoshoot and the other is a moodboard that accompanies a ficlet. Overall I wrote 22,289 words that counted towards this bingo, with 18 fills rated General, 4 rated Teen, 4 Mature and 6 Explicit. My Top 10 Ships of 2020

It's been a weird year but I've seen other people doing this. Plus this year I've been way more into gen fics (love a bit of found family especially in clone wars and marvel) than anything shippy. So I genuinely don't know what imma put on here aside from two ships for sure. Sorry this post is super long idk how to do the below the cut thing and I've had this app for 5 years...

10) Viktor Nikiforov and Yuuri Katsuki - Yuri!!! On Ice

It was a real toss up between this, supercorp, kanera and wolfstar cos they're all very integral ships to my fan heart but this son because of the Yuri on Ice fandom's rebirth this year. I've never stopped shipping this, never stopped reading fanfic of them for any extended period of time, they're still my most bookmarked ship on ao3 (although I think now star wars - all media types may have overtaken them for fandom). They were one of the first things I watched where the queer ship I loved became canon and I can't wait for the film (and hopefully someday a season 2). Heck I even made my mum watch Yuri on Ice with me so I think that says it all.

9) Edelgard Von Hresvelg and female Byleth - Fire Emblem: Three Houses

My first fire emblem game was fates when I was like 14 (and finally gay awake lol). I was so disappointed that I had to be with a guy character because the only female option was kinda creepy and also I wouldn't get the character of kana. So when three houses came out I was so happy because finally there were beautiful incredible female characters my female byleth could romance (I'm so sorry mlm you deserved so much more than you got). I got the game as soon as it came out (had to search a lot of shops let me tell you) and started on black eagles. I was actually kinda disappointed back in 2019. I didn't like the explore the monastery bit (still find it kinda tedious) and the battle mechanics weren't quite the same as fates (no pairing up?! Aka my main battle technique for protecting the weaker units). So I got like 20 hours in and put it down. Came back to it in lockdown and finally finished it! I'm so proud of myself I virtually never finish games. And I fully fell in love with the useless lesbian edelgard in the process. When I started back playing in 2020 I was like eh I wish I'd picked a different character to romance (like shes an emperor that's morally very shady) but then the romance stuff started with edelgard and I fell the heck in love.

8) Cory Matthews and Shawn Hunter (and Topanga Lawrence) - Boy Meets World

Disney+ was released in the UK this year and I finally got the opportunity to watch boy meets world in its best quality (aka not on YouTube). I watched it back when I was like 12 or 13 and it's such a nostalgic show for me. Watching it again I still absolutely adore it (and my bi ass was low-key crushing on Shawn especially in chick like me - I'm 18 btw and I got so scared for a sec but rider strong was 18 when chick like me came out so it's fine woah). And of course now I see the possibilities of the beautiful Cory and Shawn relationship like they were so bromance it was basically romance and throw in topanga it's the perfect ot3 (but I'm also fine with just Cory and Shawn or just Cory and Topanga). Read some good fanfic for them this year. My favourite was one about Shawn stealing makeup and stuff and exploring gender (need more fics like this I'm biiii).

7) Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes - Marvel Cinematic Universe

I rewatched all the MCU films this year too. And got really into Peter parker whump and irondad. Plus my eternal obsession with identity and relationship reveals of course led me from Spiderman identity reveals (and found family cuteness) to stucky coming out. Especially when it involves the internet and social media. Not my favourite ship but it's been significant to my year due to the sheer amount of marvel stuff I've read.

6) Satine Kryze and Obi Wan Kenobi - Star Wars

I rewatched clone wars in prep for season 7 and wow Satine's death was sad and sudden. She first appeared in S2 E13 I think and just the sheer sexual tension of their bickering. "The sarcasm of a soldier. The delusion of a dreamer." Just ugnnhhh my bi ass can't take much more of this. And Anakin just sipping his wine in the background grinning. And I fully believe korkie is a Kenobi.

5) Commander Cody and Obi Wan Kenobi - Star Wars

I am very much an Obi wan multishipper. I don't really have a favourite but I fully believe he was with satine and Quinlan in his life. I don't think be would've actually done anything with Cody because of the whole superior officer thing. And this probably isn't even my favourite Obi wan ship - that honour probably goes to quinobi or obitine. However the most popular ships in the fandom are codywan, quiobi and obikin. No offence to anyone who ships these they're just personally not to my taste, but I can't stand quiobi, and obikin I find only slightly more tolerable and I think that's just because there's so much obikin content so if I like the concept of a fic that happens to be obikin I'll read it. I'm just not a fan of the mentor/student relationships. So I generally favoured the codywan fics when there was shipping involved meaning I read a lot of them this year. Needed that nice fix it content post season 7.

4) Zuko and Katara - Avatar: the Last Airbender

Again I am a multishipper I have nothing against zukka it's cute. But I'm a zutara shipper first and foremost because when I first watched avatar I was like 13 and denying my gayness and gayness in general so I shipped the straight things and the straight things only. Most of these ships I stopped shipping - dramione, spuffy, some my little pony ones which we don't talk about. Zutara stayed. (I have nothing against any of the things I used to ship I just stopped shipping them so much/shipped new things more). I've continuously shipped zutara since I first watched avatar even if I didn't necessarily spend that much time on it it has always been here as one of my favourite ships. It has such good fanfic I swear including my favourite ever fanfic from any fandom - love thy enemy. Plus like the black games (reread this for the millionth time this year), a delicate subterfuge (which I read for the first time this year and damn it's so good) and so many more. With the avatar resurgence this year I haven't actually rewatched avatar aside from my normal random episode every now and then when I feel like it. But there's been a lot of avatar on my dash from people I follow getting into it and people I followed for avatar returning so naturally I returned to the fandom and read quite a lot of fanfic. I also read just a lot of avatar gen fics which were great at the whole found family thing I've been so obsessed with this year.

3) Catra and Adora - She Ra and the Princesses of Power

Catradora is canon! They kissed! What more is there to say. Arguably they should've been top but I never shipped them that much since I was always very much a multishipper when it came to she ra so yes I was very happy it became canon because we actually won for once but also I've never read much fanfic for them etc. But they are very much a dynamic I love and watching she ra all again in prep for season 5 I really enjoyed the build up of their relationship. The other two only go above because Buffy is my favourite show ever and damn there's some good fuffy fanfic and Aphra and Tolvan is both fresh in my mind and star wars owns me. Would love some catradora fic recs btw if anyone has them tho.

2) Buffy Summers and Faith Lehane - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I didn't realise it was last year that I got super into them but according to my ao3 bookmarks it was lol. 2020 I swear it's lasted an eternity. I got into them about a month before lockdown (which feels like another lifetime). I've loved Buffy since I first watched it when I was 13. It's arguably still my favourite TV show. I've been through a lot of ships for Buffy - bangel to spuffy and now fuffy. I still think angel and her were a beautiful ship back in season 2 and especially in the angel episode I will remember you. But faith and Buffy had so much chemistry in season 3 - she would've been a fresh start for Buffy and the amount of fix it fics I read I swear. My favourite has to be one where they met in LA during Anne and how that changed everything feat Buffy's internal homophobia.

1) Cheili Lona Aphra and Magna Tolvan - Star Wars

I read Darth Vader (2015) and Doctor Aphra (2016) for the first time at the end of 2020 (got a comic subscription which has served me very well already I've nearly finished the star wars canon comics). Just to see canon queer ladies in star wars was so magical for me as a queer lady. I didn't think star wars would be so overt yet as to have a queer kiss in canon (even if it's in the comics) and especially not with the main character of arguably their main comic series. Now we just gotta hope that we'll get it in live action someday soon. They weren't the ship I consumed the most content of in 2020 but they were the highlight of my 2020 because star wars did that and I finally found out about it

(Those last four are ones I've shipped forever some of my og ships but nothing particularly big has happened for me this year with them so)

I got Disney+ this year so rewatched a fair few things from my youth and though hey my obsession with that character may have been a little gay.

Thanks for the ask! To my equally great joy and despair I do indeed read A LOT of fanfic…and yes, I have spreadsheets, folders, lists…it’s a whole (slightly insane) thing. So my first reaction to your question was hysterical laughter. One? I’m allowed to pick only one? *makes big sad eyes at you*

Ok, well. Hm, let’s narrow it down. I kind of consider my AO3 bookmarks my unofficial faves collection (but I haven’t updated that in quite some time, and I almost never put WIPs on there and I can think of at least 2 very strong contenders in that category right now that I should definitely list, so take that with a grain of salt.) In my bookmarks I use the tag ‘All Time Favorites - Top 10 - Best of the Best’, and scrolling through those I just noticed that not only have I used this tag for 11 fics (go figure) but I’m also not even sure about my selection anymore. Ask me again in 3 months what my top 10 are and you’ll probably get a different answer again. Ok, I realize I’ve been waffling on and on in a desperate attempt to not have to make a choice, but I cannot pick just one. Have three instead (even that is painful). TFATWS episode 1 rewatch commentary

The first scene was so beautiful. I loved that we didn't start directly with the fight sequence. It feels way closer to the quiet beginning of CATWS and I love it so much.

The title is also SO NEAT, music's on point too but hey it’s Henry Jackman the one thing I’m sure it’s going to be great overall is the score.

The choreography is AMAZING, really well shot. Sam shielding himself with only one wing was MA-JES-TIC.

I did feel so uncomfortable in regards to the military aspect of it. Not that I was expecting anything else, but both here and in Captain Marvel the military we're good guys < 3 propaganda is so blatant and ugh:/ At least there wasn’t a literal recruitment spot like with CM.

Also, pretty good summary of CACW from the public's perspective, although one of the things I always wanted to see explored was the public's reaction of the fallout of them going into hiding after Civil War (which I'm hoping we'll get to see a little bit of in Black Widow).

Interesting point about the 70 years without having Captain America. Clearly the sacrifice play wasn't enough this time to fuel the nationalism so they went with a squeaky clean John Walker instead.

Without a doubt the most brutal TWS fight scene there has been, People involved in Punisher and John Wick are involved in this and it SHOWS.

For the record, still stands that the only time we've seen him chocking someone with his right hand instead of the metal arm remains the Maria Stark assasination. I know it's probably because of blocking and the way the shot was composed but the implications are still bone chilling. God.

Uhhmmmm I'm very ambivalent about the "Hail Hydra". On one hand, it was 100% fanservice and the internet is probably going to go insane over it, and the dead way Sebastian Stan delivered the line. Good shit. Buuut what I love about CATWS is the way Bucky never, ever ever, mouths Hydra rethoric, and even when Pierce tries to gaslight him with it, it's just an empty effort. The Winter Soldier isn't doing anything because of ideological loyalty to Hydra, even if it's product of brainwashing, it's just sheer dehumanization. They don’t need him to say the words because he’s just An Asset. There are people who have put it more eloquently but yeah, I rather go with the fanon interpretation of that aspect.

ANYWAY CONCLUSION THAT EPISODE WAS SO FUCKING GOOD LIKE HOLY SHIT. I love them so much. The balance between the personal conflicts and the political aspect (although the military aspect is still very much yikes) was on point and it was overall a joy to watch.

Weekend Reading Recs

Here we are again! Bonus longer rec list for the long weekend. Fun, shortish fanfic recs for your weekend.

1) Pretty much anything in the Team Stegosaurus vs. the Universe series by follow_the_sun. It’s mostly crossovers featuring Bucky (and friends) post-TWS, starting with Jurassic World. There’s also Warehouse 13, Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and Night at the Museum. Night at the Museum is the only one I’ve actually seen, and I still enjoyed all of them. I also read them mostly out of order and found it all comprehensible. They are very funny, but also have flashes of serious and meaningful character insight, skillfully interwoven. Here are my top three:

A) The first one is the Jurassic World crossover, which basically takes that premise that Bucky is hunting down Hydra bases and reanimating dinosaurs is exactly the kind of bullshit Hydra would get into, especially with the genetically-engineered new dinosaur because the ones that actually evolved aren’t scary enough. Features the Agents of SHIELD too. Pretty cohesive for something the author was apparently largely making up on the fly (one of the chapter notes is basically, “I could have ended this by now in a sane and reasonable way, but instead, have an underground volcano lair and Bucky punching dinosaurs”) and just fun.

B) The Night at the Museum one is just a hoot. This one is post-Civil War and diverges from canon in that Steve thinks a space rock in the Museum of Natural History might have an Infinity Stone in it and somehow that would help Bucky get de-programmed, so they bring him out of cryo and go on a heist. (“They” being Team Cap, including Scott, who fits perfectly tone-wise with the Night at the Museum characters.) Turns out the museum is a little busy after hours. Oh, and that there are displays of certain people because supersoldier serum is science.

C) “You Called Her Dot” is much shorter than the others. Bucky wasn’t trying to impress the girl by winning the stuffed animal at Coney Island. It is sweet.

2) Bucky Barnes' Birthday: 1934 by dottieapple, orphan_account

Cute pre-CA:TFA getting together Stucky fluff.

Official summary: Written about Bucky Barnes' birthday, 1934, for Bucky Barnes' birthday, 2020: in which Becca Barnes is an analogue for the fandom because she sees it before Steve and Bucky. It all starts with a hand-drawn birthday card, some cake, and getting stuck on a fire escape.

3) Steve Rogers’ Guide to Approach-With-Caution by velleities

NOT a coffee shop AU. Steve is looking for Bucky and finds him working in a coffee shop. Totally different thing. (No, really.) Because they are both awkward doofuses, the easiest way to handle this unexpected public meeting is to...pretend they don’t know each other, apparently. It’s cute and funny and fluffy.

Official summary: Steve might only be pretending to be fine, but he’s pretty sure he isn’t hallucinating the person standing before him, and he’ll be damned if that person, clad in a coffeehouse apron, with a glove covering his left arm, isn’t Bucky.

Or: Coffee Shop Non-AU. Steve finds Bucky working at a coffeehouse in the middle of nowhere. Both of them recognize the other. Neither of them says so. Bucky decides to mess with Steve - just a little. Steve decides to play along.

4) Exclusive by copperbadge

An absolute delight written as longform journalism by a reported hanging out with the Avengers for two weeks. Set in the glorious “post-Avengers, everyone lives in the tower” era that may have never happened in canon but fanon was there first and will not die.

5) all things to all people all of the time by dirgewithoutmusic

Not as lighthearted as many of my Weekend Reading Recs are, but a really thoughtful and compelling character study of Natasha.

Official summary: The Winter Soldier did not waste bullets, time, or death. Natasha told herself that and fingered her scar.

The Winter Soldier did not leave witnesses, but he had left her by that cliff outside of Odessa. Was Natasha an exception? Or did she not count as a witness? Had he looked at her and seen the same black button eyes reflected back at him, the on/off switch, the tick of clockwork?

Years later, Natasha watched the Soldier slam into the freeway concrete. The bullet holes in her abdomen had healed, and she knew this thing did not consider itself a person.

They were animate objects, both of them, useless in the witness stand. He hadn’t pulled the car transmission out, after all, hadn’t stripped the cell phone in the victim’s pocket, or shot up the rocks at the side of that road outside Odessa. He hadn’t shot her. He had left her there, breathing, and the Winter Soldier didn’t leave witnesses.

On cold nights, Natasha dreamed of ballerinas: porcelain, exquisite, their ribs jutting out stark under their skin.
