give me a blond haired blue eyed bloody-mouthed whumpee. someone who was born to fight and hasn't lost their innocence, their naiveté, yet. give me a boy who's worked towards becoming a soldier his whole life getting faced with the reality of death for the first time, give me a sweetheart swearing an oath to protect a friend experiencing true agony to save them, give me that little lost look in their eyes as their world comes crashing down around them.

Things to give your whumpees:
A working pocketwatch. Have them wake up with it the first time they’re kidnapped, especially if you’re sure they’ll never leave. Just…give them a way to tell the time and let their hopelessness sink in.
A mirror. Give them a mirror randomly throughout their captivity and watch them break down at how little they recognise themselves.
A stuffed animal. Offer it to them one time after a particularly bad session, and over the next few weeks/months watch them get more and more protective over it. You can then take it from them as punishment, or you can imagine their teams confusion when they see their youngest member defending a stuffed animal with their life.

What are your top five favorite whump scenes you've seen movies/tv shows?
Oooh, good question! Let me think...
Okay, so first off we have one of my favorite shows, Leverage, with season 2, episode 12, The Zanzibar Marketplace Job. Starting off with this one because as far as whump goes it's pretty tame, but I love it for how the characters handle themselves. Team leader Nate and his ex-wife Maggie are held hostage, and the villain wants the Fabergé egg the team came to steal in exchange for their release. What I love about this part of the episode (besides the fact that Nate and Maggie have been kidnapped and their lives are in danger, but they're too busy arguing about whose fault it is to really care) is how Eliot Spencer deals with the situation. He's been on just about every side of a hostage negotiation before, and he knows what to say and do in order to get Nate out, but you can see underneath his calm exterior that he's really worried about his friends.
Tumblr media
Second! Criminal Minds, season 4 episode 3: Minimal Loss. Spencer Reid and Emily Prentiss are FBI agents who go to a cult compound under cover as CPS agent in order to investigate allegations of child abuse. While inside the compound, the cult leader learns that one of the CPS agents is actually with the FBI (not knowing that it's actually both of them), and demands to know who, or he will kill them both. Emily reveals her status as FBI to protect Reid, and is locked up and beaten as a result. The whole episode is a tense hostage situation, with both Reid and Emily on the inside trying to stay alive and undermine the cult, while the rest of the team works to negotiate their release. One of my favorite episodes!
Tumblr media
Ok, Leverage again, because I just love it a lot, ok? Season 4, episode 7, The Grave Danger Job. While trying to take down a corrupt funeral director with ties to the Mexican drug cartels, Hardison is kidnapped and imprisoned in a coffin, which is then buried in a cemetary. The team races to find him before the claustrophobic hacker suffocates to death. Parker must stay on the phone with Hardison to keep him from spiraling into a panic attack and wasting more oxygen as they search for him, even as she herself is struggling to maintain composure while the man she's falling in love with is in danger. Great whump scenario all around, and also fantastic performances by both Aldis Hodge and Beth Riesgraf.
Tumblr media
Let's take a break from TV for a minute and go to a movie! Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, staring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. There's a scene where Holmes has been captured by Moriarty, and is tortured for information by being suspended in the air by a meat hook driven into his shoulder. During the torture, Moriarty sings along with a phonograph recording of Franz Schubert's lied "Die Forelle," which is about a fisherman trying to catch an elusive fish (this song serves as a metaphor for Holmes and Moriarty's relationship throughout the movie). A PA system for the factory they're in is also turned on in the room, so that both the music and Holmes's screams are echoing across the factory grounds. Watson does eventually rescue Holmes...by blowing up the tower he and Moriarty are in and pulling him from the rubble. Great stuff!
Tumblr media
And finally, an absolute classic that might just be my favorite of all time...
Tumblr media
Star Trek The Next Generation, season 6, episodes 10 & 11: The Chain of Command parts 1&2. This has it all! Physical torture of all sorts, HEAPS of psychological torture from a creepy whumper who specializes in breaking down the will of his victim, Picard is a defiant whumpee who, as the episodes go along, we see getting closer and closer to the breaking point. Eventually the whumper realizes that Picard doesn't know the information he's been trying to torture out of him, but he doesn't even care about the information at this point, he's determined to break Picard's will, just to prove to himself that he can. The crew also cannot just storm in and rescue him, as the political situation surrounding Picard's capture is EXTREMELY delicate, and in order to maintain peace for the entire federation, they may have to sacrifice Picard's freedom. It's a great two part episode, Patrick Stewart is phenomenal, and it's one of my all time favorite whump scenes! Thanks so much for asking!

Okay so a favorite whumpee of mine is any seemingly weak man, but he’s super smart and/or clever and weasels his way out of situations and gets poisoned and/or beaten a few times bc of his career path.
I am directly pointing at Patrick Jane from The Mentalist and Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds. Those boys raised me and also they were the first characters that I was like “I hope next episode, they get kidnapped.”
Should’ve known I’d get into whump lmaooo

Okay...
I've been thinking...
Do a lot of whumpers have, like... a type? Of whumpee?
Because the most common thing I ignore in prompts is a detail that's either or any combination of blue eyes, blonde hair, curly hair, bangs/long hair (I'm not as... I don't want to say annoyed, but kind of... by long hair. It just depends). Especially if any of these are implied to be the young, pretty boy kind of people that I see are commonly whumped, like MacGyver and Buck from 9-1-1.
I, personally, hate these kinds of whumpees. No judgement if you enjoy this kind of whumpee, obviously it's popular, but they are not my cup of tea. I prefer the wise leader character (but not if they're too old) and the tough person character (but not if they're that self absorbed kind of character if you know what I mean). I'm not into any particular appearance, but the character has to really speak to me if they have any of the characteristics I listed in the previous paragraph.
So, I guess the point of this post is to ask if I'm alone in this? I might be so adverse to that type of whumpee because everyone else likes it? I try not to be that person, but sometimes I can't help it, you know? Like, I see so much Spencer Reid whump, but I just. Don't like it.
I think it is also tied to my dehumanization dislike. It's always the weak pretty blonde haired blue eyed boys in those prompts and drabbles and stuff and I'm just. Not into that. Like, again, no judgement if you're into that, but I only even read past the first line of something involving dehumanization if I can apply it to a non dehumanization setting. I can tolerate aftermath caretaking because I can apply it to an aftermath trauma situation with some tweaks, but the master and pet stuff is not me.
Now that I went on that rant, am I alone in that as well?
What are you all's opinions and preferences?

What is your absolute favorite whump scenario? What was your first fandom? Do you enjoy visual or written whump more?
What is your absolute favorite whump scenario? I have to say coughing up blood. You know something is seriously wrong, be it a stab wound, gunshot, or illness, but in any case it’s not good. Plus, the blood dripping from the mouth looks really good.
What was your first fandom? That depends on how you define it. The first fandom I looked up and browsed through was Supernatural because I thought Dean was the perfect whumpee. However, the first fandom I actively participated in was Criminal Minds (for Spencer Reid).
Do you enjoy visual or written whump more? It’s close, but visual whump. I can’t be off-put by first person pov or bad description in a visual media. On the other hand, they always look just how I want them to and they can’t be bad at screaming in writing, so it’s close.
Thanks for the asks!

I'm looking for recs for media with a certain flavour of whumpee: male, sweet/good-natured personality, either low self-esteem, shy, or sort of humble/unassuming, and isn’t resentful of whumper at all (even better if he actively wants to please them). Any form of media (including fan works), any kind of whump, and any genre is fine. I'd really appreciate any suggestions!
Oooh that's a good question. I tend to lean more towards the stoic, dark, tough guys as whumpees but let me see if I can think of any that fit your description.
Okay these guys are all either shy/have low self esteem and/or are unassuming and kind/sofhearted. Not sure if they fit the not being resentful towards whumper bit though
Bruno Madrigal from Encanto
Newt Scamander
Natsume Takashi from Natsume Yuujinchou
Martin Crieff from Cabin Pressure
Yuki Sohma from Fruits Basket
Merlin from BBC Merlin
Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds
Hiccup
Bilbo Baggins
If any of my followers have suggestions, including if this fits your OCs or OCs you know of please add them in the replies!! Thanks!!

Just saw your recent post about lady whump and I wanted to thank you for hitting the nail on the head when it comes to lady whump and the problems with it. I couldn't figure out why my favorite whumpees were female but I couldn't enjoy ALL female whump despite my clear enjoyment of it. I'm much more picky about the females I whump than the men, even though my favorite characters are actually woman. I thought it had something to do with actor preference (which it does to a point) 1/3
but I'm realizing it has more to do with the style of writing for me and the tropes involved than the whumpee themself. Because you're so right about lady whump being written different than male. I'm not a fan of the damsel in distress trope but I love a broken strong character and those are almost always written for men.I'm a lurker in the whump community because my favorite whumpees are female (Regina Mills currently because she's such a well written whumpee) 2/3
and I just don't feel like there's a lot of love for lady whump. But preferences aside, it does make me wonder how much good lady whump goes unappreciated or overlooked simply because there's a stigma around it due to bad writing surrounding female characters and not necessarily because of the whump itself. Anyways I'm rambling now but thank you for putting into words some of the problems I've had. 3/3
------------- why did tumblr take away our line breaks --------------
Thanks for the messages, Nonny! I’m glad that post of mine helped put your problems and thoughts into words. It’s good to know I’m not totally in left field with my thinking on this, too, because it’s just something I’ve only started tossing around as a whump theory, but I think it’s got a lot of merit!
And the more I think on these subjects, the more I notice other aspects of it, too... Like, most shows have their different “types” of men - Say, Criminal Minds, how it has the more “physically weak/vulnerable” type like Spencer Reid but also the “physically average/stoic” type like Aaron Hotchner, AND the “physically strong/tough” type like Derek Morgan... and they coincide with the types of men we whumpers tend to like seeing whumped. Well, generally speaking... women tend to come in much fewer “types” in Hollywood. And those types are basically “shapely/useful” and “not shapely/comic relief”. Oh, and then there’s the “shapely/bitchy” category, usually reserved for villains and mean girls.
And I think the problem STARTS there, because let’s be real, most female characters fall into that chasm of interchangeability and lack of individuality, even today. It’s getting better, yeah, but it’s still not moved much beyond “So we have a team made up of the strong guy, the stoic guy, the smart guy, the funny guy, and the girl...” mode of storywriting.
And we know that whumpers who like male whump generally have a “type” that they go for - and will even complain about their frustration when a show whumps “the wrong one” for them. Naturally, whumpers who like female whump ALSO have a “type”... but if Hollywood’s never showing/whumping the specific “female type” that an individual whumper goes for then how would that individual ever even realize they LIKE ladywhump at all?
Anyway, in that line of thinking, I think this is why I’ve generally always found shows with predominantly male casts and “teams” tend to have crappy ladywhump. Shows like Once, built on more female-led casts, tend to have better ladywhump. And I happen to agree with you that Regina is an EXCELLENT whumpee, because she is definitely a strong, independent woman who doesn’t take any shit... which is, not-so-oddly-enough, the exact same “type” I go for in my male whumpees, as well.
I’m also getting fascinated by the lame whump in Lifetime movies. Lemme tell you, it’s lame as all hell, because these are like C class made-for-TV movies on a budget and all that, so it’s generally not “great” in the acting or staging or make-up departments... but because these films are MADE for a predominantly female audience, the “types” of female characters are a lot more varied and created more so to appeal to women. And I notice the exact opposite phenomenon going on in Lifetime movies - The male characters are all basically the same cardboard cutout Idiot Husband/Boyfriend/Murderer character, and the whump they get is generally stupid, like a 2x4 to the back of the head and we don’t see him again for, like, 20 minutes while the woman saves the day. Whereas when the women get whumped, you see all the spills and thrills and peril we normally associate with men getting in Hollywood. It’s really all very fascinating, and I find myself entranced by the different reactions I have to male whump and female whump when seen through this medium.
I gotta apologize if this post is rambly or lacking focus, because this really is just me spitballing here and throwing ideas out into the ether, because I’m thinking a lot about all of this, but I’m still not fully “locked in” on all the wheres and whyfores of it all. It’s sort of more like a jumble of ideas and thoughts at this point, less like a cohesive theory.
But yeah, the more I’m thinking about it, the more I’m coming to the conclusion that the lack of love ladywhump gets compared to malewhump has a lot less to do with US and a lot more to do with the differences in the whump that gets MADE of each gender and how it’s done...
Oh, and check out my Bonus Regina Whump tag if you haven’t already :D That’s where I very cleverly hide the Regina Whump stuff I’ve made ;)
