Anniversary Whump!
It could be the anniversary of a character's death, their loved ones reeling with the reminder of the terrible loss.
It could be the anniversary of Whumpee's capture, a reminder of the worst trauma of their life, or maybe, they're still going through.
It could be the anniversary of Whumpee's escape, whether it be on their own or with the help of Caretaker or Team.
It could be the anniversary of Whumper's death or demise, a bittersweet celebration of a victory that still aches with old wounds.
It could be the anniversary of coming home after a war, Whumpee forever changed even as their home remained the same. Can they even call it home anymore?
So many options!

Whump Concept
TW: DEATH
Whumpee, a character with powerful magic but a human soul, dies. It's bloody and painful and far too early in life, and they die wishing they could tell their friends, their family, their lover: Caretaker who holds them in their arms as they bleed out, that they love them.
After a certain amount of time in the afterlife, they come back, having used their magic to make a deal to come back. Their fatal wound is now a shimmering mark, and they are very much alive. The consequences are entirely up to you.

Can I have uuuuuh the gals rescuing the guys?
Don't get me wrong, I love it when the gals need saving. But the guys need help from their gals too.
I wanna see a badass gal with noncombative guy (platonic or romantic!) I wanna see the gal save the guy from distress. I wanna see the gal kick ass, free the guy from his bonds, and carry him to safety like a knight in shining armor, but it's the knight who needs saving.
Let me see badass gals save the dudes. Please? 🥺

Ring
Whumpee did their best to stifle sobs and keep still as Whumper set down the tattoo machine with a clack. He'd made it very clear what would happen if Whumpee allowed their hand to shake. It wasn't so much that it hurt- the pain of the needle was nothing compared the torture they'd endured these past months. This pain was deeper than the prick of the needle.
"There," Whumper crooned.
He wiped away the excess ink and began to unbuckle the restraint that held Whumpee's hand flat against the table, fingers splayed out delicately.
Whumpee attempted to snatch their hand to their chest, but Whumper held their wrist firmly, twisting it around to admire his handiwork.
A thick band with delicately drawn chains twisting around it was now inked on Whumpee's left ring finger. A fucking wedding ring, they thought bitterly. It matched the identical design on Whumper's own left hand.
"No more questions who you belong to," Whumper stated. He pulled whumpee's hand closer, curling their fingers into a loose fist. Whumpee bit back a tearful snarl as he pressed a kiss to their knuckles.
"You are mine alone to cherish until your death."

Prompt:
Whumpee, trying to avoid a really bad situation, is 'saved' by Whumper, who puts them into a worse situation as their pet/employee/whatever you want, but if they leave, their team/family will suffer even worse, and Whumpee just can't let that happen.

TW: Implied Abuse, Strong Language
Caretaker couldn’t find Whumpee anywhere. They'd been searching the seedy part of the city— this is where they lived?— all night after they had stormed out after an argument, and still nothing. Caretaker didn't like this place, all grimy and full of faces that smiled with too many fangs to be human. The bars clamored with the worst type of clientele, and though their coat did little to protect from the cold, and the warmth enticed them, they ignored it.
They heard some murmuring from a small crowd, and their stomach turned to lead. They pawed their way through the crowd, glaring up at the jostling gossipers. They parted through the sea of people, finally able to see.
Whumpee laid there, still dressed in the less-than-winter-appropriate outfit from earlier, blood matted into their hair, skin all scraped up and bruised. One of their eyes appeared swollen shut, blood dripping from their split lip as they trembled in their unconscious state.
Caretaker shoved the people around them back. "Get the fuck out of here! Don't you have places to be?!"
The crowd grumbled but dispersed upon seeing Caretaker's gun. They crouched before Whumpee, cautious not to touch them. They didn’t want to scare them, instead letting Whumpee see their hands.
"Whumpee?"
They let out what sounded like a whimper, eyelids fluttering but never fully opening. Caretaker had a million questions, but sighed, pinching the bridge of their nose. They already knew have the answers, and besides, they weren't going to get much out of them like this anyway.
Caretaker stood up, shrugging off their coat, thankful for the thick top they had on underneath. They laid it over Whumpee, holding back a cry at how small they looked like that. They weren't supposed to be small.
"Whumpee, I'm going to pick you up now. I'm going to bring you home, alright?"
Their face scrunched up, voice too hoarse. "Whumper... No, please..."
Caretaker knelt back down, eyes burning as Whumpee's arm flailed, not hitting anything, just revealing more bruises and cigarette burns.
"I'm here now, Whumpee. Whumper won't hurt you while I'm here. I'm right here."
They gingerly scooped Whumpee up into their arms, wincing at how hollow they felt, like a strong breeze would blow them away. Whumpee's face nestled into Caretaker's shoulder, and as Caretaker carried them back home— their real home— they let that act as the smallest insurance that they might be okay.

Caretaker Respecting Whumpee's Consent
We all know the trope of Caretaker overpowering Whumpee for their own good - restraining them so they won't hurt themselves, forcing life-saving medical procedures, forcing them to work through trauma, etc. But let's also appreciate the sheer consent-focused kindness on display when Whumpee begs Caretaker not to do something and Caretaker respects their wishes.
Whumpee doesn't want Caretaker to speak to them so Caretaker is silent.
Whumpee doesn't want Caretaker to touch them so Caretaker doesn't, even when they're almost frenzied with the desire to hold Whumpee.
Whumpee doesn't want to be touched OR spoken to. Caretaker just makes themself available nearby, like they're waiting for a feral animal to trust them.
Caretaker wants to ask something but doesn't because they know Whumpee isn't ready to talk about it yet.
Caretaker is the only one who lets Whumpee work through their trauma at their own pace.
"Okay, cope how you need to cope. I know it's not healthy but I trust you not to go too far."
"It's your choice."
"You don't have to trust me."
"You don't have to talk about it. Just know that I'll be here if you ever want to."
"It's okay, I'm not going to touch you."
Caretaker refuses to answer questions about Whumpee from people who have no business asking what happened.
Caretaker covers Whumpee's face and hiding their broken body from view as they rush through a crowd of prying eyes.
"No, I won't tell anyone about this. I will never use this against you."
"This isn't just about what's best for you. I'm asking what you truly want."

Just thinking abt other characters finding out abt whumpee's trauma bc for unrelated reasons whumpee gets sick enough that they just don't have the same sort of filter on their words or actions or what emotions they show as they usually would, so ooops all the stuff they've been keeping secret is coming to light... :)

"Whumpee asked for you specifically, A. I'll let you in to see them," Whumpee's medic and lover, Caretaker, said.
A couldn’t believe it. Whumpee wanted to see them? Before their best friend, B? After they sacrificed themself and were tortured by Whumper for months because of them?
They followed Caretaker, refusing to let them down, even as their face burned with shame, guilt gnawing at their insides.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leader Whumpee sat in the wheelchair, whiteboard sitting across their blanketed lap as Caretaker opened the door for A, the younger, sibling-like member of Team. A's breath hitched, eyes widening.
"They’re okay, A," Caretaker assured them. "Their throat is still healing, and they're still weak, but they're going to be okay."
A nodded, Caretaker letting out a deep breath. "Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to give the two of you some privacy. I have some things to attend to." The door shut behind them, leaving A standing before Whumpee, unable to meet their eyes at the sight of matching wounds from Whumper.
Whumpee's eyes burned with the shame of being unable to even give A a hug, or tell them that none of this was their fault. They attempted a smile, scribbling on their board.
"I missed you."
A's eyes welled with tears. "I'm so sorry, Whumpee," they whispered, hands curling into fists.
Whumpee shook their head vigorously, scribbling big letters on the board before tapping it when their marker. A looked up, hiccuping when they saw the message.
"It’s not your fault. They would've just killed you and taken me anyways. It's not your fault."
As A sank to their knees, they wrapped their arms around Whumpee in a hug, holding back tears as they pressed their face into the blanket.
i never realised how many whump tropes were in my story until i scrolled through one of these whump blogs and realised, "oh wait, i've done that. oh, i've done that one too. oops, that one as well."
But how can the characters recover and be happy if they don't experience horrific and horrible circumstances first? :(
exactly! I was into whump ever since I was a kid, long before I knew what whump was or its concept. I just knew I had a thing where I’d imagine my favorite characters going through hell just so that they could be cared for / comforted later. I mean, people enjoy whump for various reasons, of course, and while some may prefer whump with no comfort (completely valid), I think one of the reasons why I’m in the whump community is because I also live for the comfort that comes after the hurt.
also, I think you and I are alike, because I’m not into stories where characters just get to be happy without any challenges, like where’s the fun in that if everything is rainbow and sunshine for them? precisely what you said, “how can they recover and be happy if they don't experience horrific and horrible circumstances first?” so true, my friend.
I think things like hallucinations/illusions are underappreciated in whump. Especially if they can be manipulated or controlled by an outside force, there’s so much you can do with it.
Flood whumpee with illusions of their worst fear. I wrote a bit about a young man with a crippling fear of bugs/insects/anything creepy crawly so that was used against him (it was. A bit graphic ngl). Throw their fears back in their face.
Plague them with visions of loved ones who died or left for one reason or another. Extra points if whumpee blames themselves for the loss of said loved one. Plague them with the voices of those they feel they’ve let down, confirming that fear.
Make them hallucinate being rescued over and over again. Break them down with every disappointment of a fake rescue. Eventually they fight the hallucination, even going so far as to physically attack an actual rescuer because they can never tell what’s real anymore. Do whatever it takes to make them be suspicious of the ones they used to trust with their whole self.
Event Info & Rules
~ Please read our extensive event info posts before sending us an ask ~
WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. The 'theme' of each day is the line of lyrics.
The prompts are merely to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don’t have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is "flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be related to the 'spark' of a relationship. It's truly up to you!
In total, there are 4 prompts for each day: there's lyrics, an object, a trope and a line of dialogue to choose from.  We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks.
Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.
When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag the with:
#whumptober2023 …..(the event tag)
#no.1, #no.2, #no.3, …..(day number)
#lyric, #bruises, #stabbing,  …..(the theme or specific prompt you chose)
#fandom or #OC, … (ironman, originalcontent, oc …)
#medium …..(gifs, fic, podcast, art, etc.)
#teeth, #gore tw, #etc …..(trigger warnings & any additional tags. Add "tw" AFTER the trigger/content warning. )
#nsfwhump …..(only for nsfw content)
#your own tags go here
PLEASE BE DILIGENT WITH YOUR TAGGING. Only properly tagged posts are considered for archiving on the official @whumptober-archive blog. They must be tagged in the order above. An elaborate post about our tagging system can be found [here]
Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants in recent years, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts from all genres will be reblogged each day.
Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed the event. You do not need to post anything you have created, we rely on trust and we will not check this.
Questions not addressed in one of our many event info posts can be directed to this blog. We will not answer any questions that have been answered in the FAQs or rules already.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How does this year’s prompt list work? What do I have to choose?
You can create something based on:
The overall theme/lyric of the day
Prompt 1, 2 or 3
One or several of the alternative prompts
A combination of the above
Q. Is [specific anything] allowed?
When in doubt: JUST DO IT!
Q. Do I have to do all 31 days?
Participate as much or little as you like! Just be sure to tag your posts properly (ex. #no.7, #radio silence). If you create works for 31 total theme days you will become a completionist. But apart from that, there are no repercussions if you don’t fill prompts for each day.
Q. Can I post early/late?
Yes, you can post whenever you want. We will only reblog posts during October, but you can use our prompts all year round. The day you post will only affect your probability of being reblogged.
Q. Will you reblog my post?
Due to the sheer number of content posted during Whumptober we can’t promise to reblog every single post. We will make a random selection trying to capture a wide variety of content. The following will increase your chances at being reblogged:
tag your post properly
post within 2-3 days of the theme you want to fill: if you fill the prompt for Day 1 your chances of being reblogged during October 1st to 3rd are highest and will go towards zero afterwards.
Q. What if I don’t understand a prompt/theme?
Send us an ask! We’re happy to help with wild, unhelpful clarifications or brainstorming. That being said, the themes are entirely up for interpretation. Don’t take them too literally. For example: You can be choking on a cherry, someone else can choke you or you could be choked up on emotions, etc.
Q. What kind of content can I make? Can it be NSFW?
This is a MIXED MEDIA event! You can write fic, post meta, doodle or paint, create a gifset or photo edit, link a song, or get crafty with video - anything goes. As for NSFW, make what you like, we just hope that you’ll tag your work accordingly so that others participating in the event can stay safe.
Q. Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges?
Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.
Q. Can I upload/repost my Whumptober content to other social media platforms?
Of course! You can post your own content wherever you like (or you can opt to not publish it at all). Additionally we’ve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there. It can be accessed here. The tumblr blog @whumptober-archive is the official archive, so please respect the boundaries of any closeted whumpers in your social circle.
Q. Can I use prompts to write a new chapter for an existing fic?
Yes.
Q. An existing fic I am currently writing contains many of the Whumptober prompts, can I use it?
If you are actively writing this fic at the moment with the Whumptober prompts in mind, yes. If you’ve previously posted something that checks the boxes, we ask that you not include it retroactively for this current year. You can, however, add new chapters relating to one or more of the prompts.
Q. What kind of characters can I write for?
Fandom characters, OC characters, human, furry, alien, cyborg, RPF, whoever you like. You can use the generic “whumpee” character or have specific ones.
Q. Does it have to take place in a specific fandom?
No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want.
Q. Can I use a prompt multiple times?
Yes, but it only counts once towards being a completionist.
Q. If I’m not comfortable with one day’s prompts can I use a prompt of a different day as a substitute and still be a completionist?
No, you can’t exchange prompts for different days. However, if all four prompts of a specific day make you uncomfortable, we have created an alternate prompts list that you can draw from. You can exchange any prompt with these, but please make sure not to use them twice.
Q. Where can I post my work?
Post where and how you want. You don’t have to (cross)post it to Tumblr or at all. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive.
Q. Can I start posting early?
You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? That being said, you can post early, but we won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st.
Q. Do I have to finish a fic I started/can I post WIP’s?
Yes you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish it in October for it to count towards being a completionist.
Q. Is co-writing allowed?
Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you.
Q. Do I have to create 31 standalone pieces to be considered a completionist or can I write one continuous story?
One continuous story is fine.  The challenge is to write something for 31 prompts. If that’s spread over 31 fics or just one, you are still considered a completionist. (The same goes for every other media you choose.)
Q. Is there a min/max limit on word count?
There is no limit.
Q. Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many?
No limit and combine as many as you’d like.
Q. Is a hc/angst/emotional whump focus ok?
Of course! We are not going to establish a threshold for whumpiness. If you think it’s whumpy enough, then it’s whumpy enough. It can be physical, psychological, emotional, or any combination of the three.
Q. What’s considered nsfw?
See this post
Q. What is whump?
Typically the genre includes situations where a fictional character is hurt, be it emotionally, psychologically, or physically. Fanlore provides information here.
Q. My interpretation of the prompt isn’t whumpy at all, does that count?
If you don’t think your interpretation is whumpy, then it doesn’t count for Whumptober. Remember that whump comes in many forms, though, and that we don’t have a whump-checker or a threshold for how much whump needs to be included. If you think your interpretation contains enough whump to count, then it does.
Q. Can I start working on the prompts before October?
Absolutely! That’s why we post the prompts a month in advance. We recognise how difficult it can be creating for 31 days in “real time” so feel free to start creating early!
Q. How do I tag triggers?
tw at the end of the word, ex. #gore tw
Q. Do I have to use your tags?
Yes, if you want your work archived on the blog. If not, feel free to use whatever tags you want.
Q. Does combining prompts count towards completion?
Yes
Q. Can we @ you?
Yes but we mostly rely on the #whumptober2023 tag.
Q. Is there anything we are absolutely not allowed to write?
There are no rules, but please make sure to properly tag your trigger warnings. And keep in mind Tumblr’s policies if you are posting it here (or the policies for whatever site you use).
Q. Where can I go for brainstorming help?
Here on Discord or come into our ask box.
Q. My characters are minors, is that ok?
Yes, but as with everything else, use clear and descriptive tags.
Q. Can I cross post on other blogs?
Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable. You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once.
Note: This is a creation challenge, please don’t repost your old work under our tags (unless it’s been changed or edited for the event).
Thanks for reading, and happy whumping!
