Why did my brain randomly dump story lore on me. Do you really want me to make a sad one piece ripoff
#it was basically about this girl who had a little brother and her dad dies in the future and she used a memory she had to manipulate time#or something#to talk to her dad but she was too nervous she started shaking the boat a lot and the enemies came on#her dad was a slow fighter because he was confident about being the strongest#he got killed before he could use a syringe or something and then the enemy kills him#the girl knew the enemy was coming and they only got a split second longer#the enemy didn't want to kill the kids despite the enemies pets wanting to eat them#and left them to die on the ship#they sailed away i guess and went to this world and met a baby who was obsessed with them#and the baby grew up like idk three years. and kept trying to hangout with them#and they are like 'i lost my brother and father once i won't do it again'#basically the ''''one piece'''' is a journey of bringing her dad back#which was just me venting about how i miss my dad a lot#the baby became named Cadence Persistent of the Sea and went back home to see the MCs parents#and Cadence owns a dinosaur my childhood fav BTW#the girl MC is about 30 but she's stuck in her brain or something and she's a kid so her brother doesn't die#bc he does die like the dad but for some reason the enemy didn't kill him too#even tho she was canonically 31 in my dream i might change it bc she generally acts childish#(she IS her child self so i could twist this to be her also '''' regressing '''' back into it)#i would 100% try to put my faith in here somehow. Cadence becomes a nun and her Dinosaur is still her best friend and she's a boss that#never marries#who knew it was that easy to pump out lore i got a huge chunk of it after sleeping this is awesome

Anxiety’s One Hell of a Problem II
It’s the fourth and everyone’s there. Julia, Adam, Jeremiah, Conrad, Laurel, who also brought Cleveland, Belly, Steven, and even a couple of Belly’s deb friends were in town.
The party is bustling with some in the pool, conversation taking place all over the property, and their catered food—since Susannah always did all of the cooking—being shared amongst the people.
Everyone knows it’s different. They all can feel it in the air, the tension, the awkwardness. But Conrad wasn’t only feeling the tension in the air but in himself. He keeps thinking back to Steven saying, ‘have you ever thought of therapy?’ That singular comment has been taking up his mind for days and he can’t seem to shake it.
“Hey, Conrad! What’s up, man?” Cleveland greets, handing Conrad a plate of crackers and various cheeses.
“Oh, hey, Cleveland! How are you? How’s that…uh…book coming?”
“It’s good! You know, those sailing lessons or yours are really coming in handy. Very informative.”
“I uh…I didn’t know you’d be in town.”
“Laurel actually invited me and I thought I’d stop by and say ‘hello’ and see how it’s going.” Cleveland says. Conrad sees that Cleveland has started growing his beard back, with the little stubbles of gray hairs coming in along his mustache and chin area.
“Oh! Laurel, huh.”
Cleveland lets out a nervous yet amused laugh. “Yes, Laurel. I don’t know yet but—“
“Well, you didn’t hear it from me but I’m really rooting for you guys.”
“Are you now?”
“Yeah! Laurel likes you and you clearly like her too.”
“Clearly?”
“Yeah! You’re all goo-goo-ga-ga over her.”
“Says you! I’ve been seeing you stealing glances at Belly all day—“
Conrad’s heart stops for a moment as he clenches his hands onto the platter. “It’s not like that. She’s with Jeremiah.”
Cleveland clears his throat uncomfortably, a pang of guilt hitting his stomach. “Hey, I’m sorry, man. I didn’t know.”
“No, no it’s okay. I’m just going to—“ Conrad sputters looking in the opposite direction towards some people near the pool.
“Hey, Conrad?”
“Yeah?”
“If you ever need to talk, you can always call me. You know that, right?”
“Yeah, I know that. Thanks, Cleveland.”
“You know, when I was dealing with really bad depression, talking to someone—just being able to vocalize that… pain—was really helpful. Losing someone is really hard and—“
“Yeah, I know, Cleveland. Thanks.” Conrad says, cutting Cleveland off. He couldn’t take hearing one more person trying to be his personal psychologist and overanalyze him. Sure Cleveland helped him through his first panic attack during that hot summer day on the boat—one of his weakest moments in Conrad’s opinion—but he wasn’t about to make this all about him. He knew he meant well but he wasn’t about to abandon Jeremiah and Belly when they needed him. Not now and not ever.
Conrad nods and nervously walks off. He takes a breath, rubbing his chest with the heel of his palm and heads for inside where he sees Steven talking with Taylor. Steven is slyly smiling with her as she throws her head back laughing.
Conrad was planning on just walking past them, as they seem to be preoccupied but then Steven spots him and waves him over.
“Hey, man! Sup?” Steven greets, handing him a glass of some beverage, noticing Conrad’s hand rubbing his chest. He hands him his cup of water. “Thirsty?”
Conrad takes it, noticing that his throat has suddenly gone dry.
“Yeah. Thanks, man.” He takes a sip, letting the water cascade down his throat. “How are you? Getting ready for college?”
“Yeah! I’ve been shopping and visited the campus a couple of days ago with my dad. You ready for Stanford?”
“Yeah, yeah. Gonna drive over a couple of weeks.”
“Babe, I’m gonna go find Belly but I’ll see you later, ‘kay?” Steven nods giving Taylor a quick peck before she walks off.
“So, uh…how are you doing, man?”
“I’m good—“
“No. How are you really doing? Like, for real, man.” Steven asks. “You seem…nervous, worried.”
Conrad forces the muscles around his mouth into a carefree expression, though his eyes telling a very different story.
“It’s okay— to feel on edge. The fourth has always been Susannah’s thing and I—“
Conrad leans in swiftly, his muscles in his jaw tensing. “Can you stop? Please. I really can’t do this right now.”
“Conrad—“
“I have been having essentially a 2 hour long anxiety attack, trying to get through this day, okay?! I really can’t take this right now.” He lets out a shaky half-of-a-breath, breaking eye contact with Steven.
“Exactly. Which is why you should at least consider therapy! This isn’t healthy. This suppression, constant anxiety. It’s okay to ask for help, Connie.”
Conrad froze.
Connie.
His mom used to call him that. And at that exact moment, he felt his breath stop. The tremors in his hands become visible, his vision blurring.
Though his mind is in a fog, he feels his feet carry him. To where? He has no idea. Just out of there, away from that conversation.
He ran up the stairs. He felt himself bump into people as he stumble into his bedroom, slamming the door behind him. He leans his body weight against the wall, muttering to himself, “It’s okay, it’s okay. Just breathe.” He attempts at a deep breath though it fails, only making him weaker. “Dammit. C’mon, c’mon. It’s okay. It’s just a-a. A—“ He begins pacing in his room. As his hands begin curling up he spreads his hands as wide as he can, to prevent cramping later. God, you can’t even say what it is! If, you can’t say what it is how are you supposed to stop them?! They’re never gonna end. They’ll just get worse and worse and worse and worse. And Jeremiah will find out and you’ll know how weak you really are. You aren’t any role model. You’re a weak, weak, coward who can’t even breathe—
Conrad’s spiraling was cut off by the sound of someone’s voice. At first, he doesn’t hear, however when they touch his shoulder he feels himself practically jump out of his own skin.
“Conrad? What’s wrong? Is everything okay?”
“T-Taylor?” He sputters, his voice shaking like crazy.
“How about we sit down, yeah?” She gently guides him to the bed behind him. “What’s going on? Do you know what’s happening?”
“I’m having a p-p-panic attack-k.” He stutters over the word and Taylor smiles and nods sympathetically.
“May I?” She asks, hovering her hand over his chest.
Conrad nods and she places her hand over his heart.
“Just try to take some deep breaths, okay?” Conrad nods, following Taylor’s exaggerated breathing. “See? Your heart rate is already slowing down.”
“Yeah.” Conrad replies, his throat scratchy and shaky.
“So have you had that happen before?”
“Um…yeah. A lot, actually. I really should’ve seen that coming.”
“How long?”
“Since last summer.” Conrad pauses to look at Taylor. Her usual snarky smile has been replaced with a calm and sympathetic expression. “I only had one last summer but when I got to school, they got worse, and the longer I was away from home, the more frequent and severe they got.”
“Conrad, I had no idea.”
“How would you? I didn’t want anyone to know.”
“Am I the only one?”
“No. Steven knows, helped me through one earlier this summer and…Belly is aware of one but she doesn’t know…”
“How often they are.”
“Yeah.”
“You gonna come back down or?”
“I think i’m just gonna stay up here for a bit.”
“Yeah, of course.”
“Oh, and if you ever need to talk to someone or feel your anxiety get worse, you can always talk to me but I would highly recommend talking to a professional.”
“Like a therapist?”
“Yeah. It really helped me through my parents’ divorce. Working out all my shit and stuff.”
“I‘ll think about it.” Conrad says. “And Taylor?”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for helping me. I know you’re not my biggest fan so it means a lot. Truly.”
“No sweat off my back. Plus, this kind of helps.”
“How?”
“Well, now I know you’re not just some random dick, you’ve got shit.”
Conrad chuckles, almost smiling. “Yeah. I’ve got shit for sure.”
Taylor leaves, closing the door behind her, leaving Conrad in his bedroom.
After a moment or so, Conrad looks up “therapists near me” in the google search bar and starts looking through the results.
He then changes his search to “therapists near Stanford University.” and finds a therapist that’s not only near the university but works through the school so he gets it free of charge. Part of the school’s mission and such.
Though there’s still a slight pull on his chest. A new feeling starts to form. Hope. Hope for a happier future, lighter heart, and hope for freedom from all the shit that’s happened to him in the past year and a half.
Could Conrad be…happy? free?
There’s only one way to find out.

——————————————————————————
“she’s a kook jj, i mean, you aren’t seriously crushing on her? are you?” john b looked up at jj, and frowned when he saw he wasn’t laughing. “john b, i don’t know what it is man, but she’s different. i just know it.” john b cackled, “she’s not different. she’s a kook, i mean come on… she hangs out with topper. that says enough.” jj rolled his eyes, obviously annoyed. “you just don’t like her because she associates with sarah’s ex.” he shakes his head. “no, that’s not the reason jj. your mind is just fogged up, because you clearly aren’t thinking straight.” jjs anger was boiling up, and before he did something he would regret, he decided to just walk off.
jj stormed away. he continued walking despite john bs attempt of calling out to him to stop. he was trying to clear his mind, he genuinely liked you, so much that he felt the need to tell john b. jj wouldn’t usually be this upset, but when john b of all people disapproves because you are a kook, when the girl he is dating is sarah, it angers him. after ten minutes of air, and chilling out, he returns to john bs house.
once inside he sees you and kie. he was completely caught off guard. “oh? you’re here.” jj spoke to you, causing you to look up. “hey jj. yeah, i decided to stop by before my shift. do you want to join us? we’re playing uno.” your smile immediately lifts a smile to jj's face. “sure i’ll play some uno.” he approaches the table, and you deal him seven cards.
kie was the only one who semi liked you. obviously she wasn't ecstatic about you, but she was open to tolerating you. as time went on, she started to enjoy your company, she realized you weren’t that bad, and despite being a kook, the two of you related on many things.
“first card is a yellow two. jj can go first.” you stare at him, waiting patiently for his move. his heart was beating fast, as he tried to pick a card. as he placed a yellow seven, john b walked in. “why is she here?” you didn’t miss the sharp tone that lingered in john bs voice. “oh, i decided to stop by. i’m sorry, i should have asked.” you stand up, reaching for your jacket. “that’s right. you should have asked. you can’t just show up to someone’s house randomly. it’s weird.” you frown, not realizing until now that he didn’t trust you enough to even be considered an acquaintance.
“she’s welcomed here whenever she wants to be, john b.” jj spoke up for you. kie backing him up by softly saying yeah. “no. she’s not. it’s my house jj, and i don’t appreciate you inviting random kook strangers over. she’s not a pogue. she’s not like us. meaning; she’s not welcomed here.” you frown at his words. you quickly feel out of place and you rush to the door, pulling your shoes on. “i’m going to go.” you spoke up, grabbing your purse. “good. see you!” john b exclaimed, watching you walk out the front door and down the steps.
“what the fuck bro?” jj stared at john b waiting for an explanation. “what?” jjs eyes narrowed on his, he couldn’t be serious could he? “why do you always do that shit bro? i mean honestly. what makes her any different from sarah?” john b shakes his head. “don’t even compare them. they aren't similar.”
jj scoffs, “oh they’re not?” jj begins to expose the similarities but john b shuts it down immediately. “jj i’m not going to explain myself to you anymore. i don’t like her, and i don’t want her over here.” jj groans in frustration. “if only you got to know her man, then you’d know how amazing she is. i mean ask kie. kie thought she was annoying at first and now they can be in the same room without being in a yelling match.” kie nodded, listening in but staying mostly silent.
“fine. the only reason i’m agreeing is because you hate kooks too, which means you might be right. about her.” john b sighs, giving up. “thank you. please, even if you decide you still don’t like her, please just consider getting to know her.” he pleads, “i already said i will.” john b rolled his eyes, jj smiles, “okay. we should invite her to hang out with us after pope gets off work.” they all nod in agreement, planning something so they could see if they wanted you to join their party.
the pogues had planned on inviting you to the wreck, and then to a mini trip on the hms pogue, for a boat ride. you were ecstatic, excited that they wanted to actually hang out with you. you think hard, trying to find a perfect outfit. you didn’t want to overdress, or underdress, and you didn’t want to look bad. after deciding on a simple outfit and swimsuit, you head to the wreck.
you see the group in the back corner. when you walk inside, jj is the first to spot you. a smile spreads to his lips, as he waves you over to join them. you sit down by john b, jj sitting on the other side of you. “hey.” you say shyly, not entirely sure if this whole thing was a set up. you were hopeful it wasn’t, but you could never be too sure.
“hey, thanks for coming.” pope said. you smile brightly at him, “thanks for inviting me.” pope nods. your stomach was hurting by how nervous you were. jj made small talk with you, as you guys were waiting for kiara. you weren’t entirely sure what they were planning, you were just glad to be a part of it.
“alright guys. here’s the scraps.” kiara walked to your table, setting down a bowl of fries, and then a plaster of burgers. you smile softly, jj and john b immediately grabbing the food. you wait, not entirely hungry since you ate before you left. jj offered you a bite of his burger, “oh thanks!” you laugh slightly as you bite from where he had bitten, enjoying the taste, “hey you actually have mustard right there.” you smiled as you spread mustard on jj’s face. you couldn’t help the giggles erupting from you, as jj’s mouth opened wide in shock. “oh really? well you seem to have some ketchup-” his finger rubbed ketchup on your cheek. “all over…” he gestured to your face. “hey! give me a napkin.” you ask for a napkin and jj laughs. “no.” you immediately look over to pope, giving him a smile. “may i have a napkin?” you ask. he smiles, “sorry jay.” he hands you a napkin and you wipe the ketchup off your face.
“thank you pope. i like you. unlike some people at this table…” you look at jj and he’s just smiling like a maniac. pope laughs. “glad that you think so highly of me just because i handed you a napkin.” you nod, eating a french fry before glancing at john b. he was awfully quiet. “john b?” you question. he looks up at you. “yes?” annoyance already rolling off his tongue. “are you okay?” he rolled his eyes. “yes. even if i wasn’t, i wouldn’t confide in you about it.” you frown.
you wait a second, trying to think of how to lighten the mood. “you know what we need to do?” you look from pope to jj, to finally john b, poking at his arm. “what?” john b looks up at you. you tap jj’s stomach, indicating to him to stand up. he stands up, making room for you to be able to move out of the booth. you poke john bs side. “we need to dance.” you grab john b's hand, doing anything possible to lighten his mood. his frown was still hung on his lips. he hesitated and followed you to the middle of the restaurant. jj and pope stay back at the booth.
you lean over the counter, asking kie to play a song she knows john b would enjoy. “john b. you just need to calm down, and relax. you just need to dance like nobody's watching.” he stares at you, shocked. “it’s okay. i’ll do it with you.” his favorite song started playing, and you began to awkwardly dance. he laughed at your ridiculous moves. he held back from joining in, he didn’t want you to win. you began to break out dancing, and he can’t help but laugh. you look up as someone enters the restaurant. a smile flies to your face. “sarah!!!” she runs up to you.
“hey!!! i didn’t know you guys would be here.” you smile, still swaying slightly to the music. “sarah i would have definitely invited you if i knew you were free.” she nodded at your words. “all good girly, we still good for monday?” you smile, “of course.” john b stared, confused by this whole interaction. not only did you know sarah, you were actually friends with her. you had plans to hang out with her. maybe he was wrong, maybe jj was the one who was right. maybe, you actually were similar to sarah.
“do you want to join us?” you ask, sarah grabbed your hand spinning you around before breaking out in a fit of laughter. “stay another minute here with you losers… i’ll pass.” you jokingly act offended, “hey!” she shakes her head. “only kidding. i definitely would, but my dad wants me home. he claims he has a fun night planned but it’ll probably just consist of watching a movie and eating from here.” you nod. “well have fun with that.” you spoke, she smiles, “you know i always do.” you roll your eyes at her joke, she walks away grabbing her to go food before she disappears from the restaurant. “hey i’m gonna go take a sip of water.” you move back to the booth, jj refusing to move so you end up sitting on his lap. you sip water as you catch your breath from dancing.
john b heads straight to kiara. “how long have they been friends?” he asked abruptly. “her and sarah?” kie questions, pointing at you. he nods, “yeah.” kiara laughs, “they’ve been buddies for years. they didn’t get super close until a month or two ago.” he nods at her words. he was still shocked. he looked back at the booth, seeing you sat on jjs lap, his hands held firmly around your waist. you were speaking to pope, and he actually looked interested in what you were saying.
john b had just realized that he had the wrong idea of who you were. whether sarah made him realize that or not, he definitely didn’t want to hold a grudge with you, especially if sarah was your friend. john b walked back to the table, his attention on you. kiara had followed swiftly behind him. “let’s raise a toast.” the group was confused but they lifted their cups of water anyway. “to the newest member of our club.” his glass pointed in your way, his cup clashing with yours. you smile. john b was the only one you were worried about, and now he was saying he welcomes you.
the group cheers as you smile brightly. “thank you guys! i’m so excited for our future adventures.” you drink from your glass. the group waited for kiara’s shift to end before taking the hms pogue for a ride. you were sat by jj, pope to your left. kiara and john b talking as they directed the boat.
“well, welcome. you made it.” pope smiles, laughing slightly. “i did, isn’t that crazy. john b hated me like 6 hours ago.” jj laughs, “classic john b for you.” you nod at his words. pope, jj, john b, kiara, and you, talked all night, watching the stars as you guys got closer. it was so much fun, and today’s events allowed you to become a permanent group member.

Previous Part || Series Masterlist
It’s roughly a week before he sees you next.
Right on time too, according to the briefings he had received. Once a week you’d come up with your next batshit crazy idea and someone would be sent to make sure you didn’t execute it.
It was more of a babysitting gig than anything. Most people would do one, maybe two assignments before asking to not be sent again.
He was not most people. He volunteers to go again. His afternoon is relatively free and he’s bored.
Also, and more importantly, he needs to get out of the house before Sam finds out what he did.
“You’ll find her near the Statue of Liberty.”
“How do we know?”
“Oh, she tells us.”
“...she tells us where to find her?”
“Most times, yes. She says it’s time efficient.”
Absurd. He thinks you’re absurd.
Bucky finds you in line to board the ferry. You’re dressed to the nines like an obnoxious tourist, even though you were a local, topped with binoculars and a bucket hat.
On an unrelated note, he thinks that maybe the mission today is to kill you for daring to wear sandals with socks like a suburban dad. A shudder runs through his body when he sees it.
He’s wearing all black and a baseball cap. Somehow he’s standing out more than you are.
He boards the ferry behind you, keeping a close eye on all your movements. You take your place near the railing, a seat near the front of the boat.
His phone rings. He answers it, expecting Sam to screech at him for painting Redwing neon pink again. He should have known it was coming after he shoved Bucky off the quinjet before he had time to strap his parachute on properly.
“I thought I told you to bring a cape.”
He quickly looks up at you but you’re not facing him. You have your phone held up to your ear, however.
“How did you get this number?” he asks icily.
“I knew you’d show up again.” Your head tilts to look at the statue in the distance. “Also, thanks for the door money, but I’m not sure I appreciate how you think the least creepy way to give someone money is to drop it off anonymously at their doorstep.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.” He swiftly gets up, stalking over to where you’re sitting. He was advised not to do anything aggressive. Advised was a flexible word.
“Because I wasn’t going to answer it.” You look up at his figure looming over you. “Oh, hey.”
The phone is still pressed to the side of your face even though he’s right beside you. He cuts the call, shoving it back into his pocket.
“Allow me to introduce my pl-”
“What are you doing here?” He cuts to the chase.
You send him a glare. “I was going to say it before you told me to. And sit down before everyone thinks you’re going to kill me.”
“Why are you going there?” He doesn’t have time for this, he thinks. He has important things to do. Like watching the reruns of Masterchef Junior.
He sits in the seat beside you.
“Look at us.” You grin at him. “Me with the evilest outfit I could think of, you with your... Addams Family cosplay. We’re like, two peas in a po-”
“Start explaining,” he interjects.
You roll your eyes. “I’m going to shrink the Statue of Liberty and use it as a keychain.”
“What?” It’s probably the most benign plan he’s ever heard in his life.
“I’m kidding.” Oh, good. “I’m not using it as a keychain, I’m taking it to class.” Nevermind.
“What?” He finds himself repeating his previous question.
“I’m shrinking all the statues I can find. I want to use it in my classroom to teach the kids.”
“You’re... a teacher?” He blinks.
“You got a problem with that?” You look offended, to say the least.
“No.” It’s not what he would peg your occupation as. He didn’t think you had one at all. “How are you planning on shrinking it?”
You rummage through the ugliest fanny pack he has ever had the misfortune of seeing. You pull out a small ring box, complete with a bow tied neatly on top.
“I was saving this for our third anniversary, but-” you offer him a nervous laugh.
His stony expression doesn’t change, not even a blink.
“Fine, Jesus, you’re no fun,” you huff, dropping the emotional act when he doesn’t look amused.
You flip open the lid. Inside there are a few small disks. It looks familiar, he realises.
“Your friend Ant-Boy didn’t file a patent, so I just took his whole shtick.” He wants to defend Scott’s honour; it’s Ant-Man not boy. He doesn’t. He’s too transfixed on what you have in your hand.
“Pym particles.”
“The diet version.” You pick up one of them carefully. “A ripoff, but effective. Just gotta attach it to the thing I want to shrink and give it a few minutes.”
“You’re going to steal the Statue of Liberty,” he says, frankly a little taken aback that you were serious.
“Would you relax? I’ll put it back.”
“That’s not the point,” he damn near exclaims. “You can’t take away the Statue of Liberty just because you feel like it.”
“I literally can.” You point to the chips in your hand. “That’s the point of this, keep up.”
He feels exasperated. He didn’t sign up for this when he became an Avenger.
“Give me the box.” He makes a grab for it but you yank it away from his reach.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
“I don’t have time for this.” His reruns would begin in an hour.
“That’s my problem, because...” you trail off.
He rolls his eyes, makes a grab at the box again. His tactic is different this time. He stealthily pins one of your arms down so that you’re basically incapacitated.
“Hey! Stop that.” You fumble against his reach, shoving him with your elbow.
“Just give me the thing and we can all go home for the day,” he huffs, unfazed by your squirming.
“No! Over my dead bod-”
He doesn’t immediately notice what goes wrong in the scuffle.
Until you look at the ground near your feet. A disk lay there, undisturbed.
“Is that-” All of a sudden, either he’s getting taller or the ceiling of the boat is getting lower.
“Oops,” you say, not remorseful in the slightest.
“Are we going to-”
“I’d give it five minutes max.”
Great. He was stuck on a boat that was beginning to shrink. The other passengers were either oblivious or ignorant to seats that were starting to become too small for them, but Bucky’s heightened senses and extreme reflexes made it hard to skip.
He nudges the piece of tech with his foot. Maybe he can kick it off the boat.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” you warn solemnly. He wants to disagree but doesn’t know enough about the device to dispute you.
“Fix this,” he hisses, panic slightly rising. His fingers find their way to his phone to send out an emergency text requesting backup and mass evacuation.
“I think it’s a rather lovely day for a swim, don’t you?” You stare dreamily at the waves that were inching closer up the boat.
Or you were inching closer to the water. Technicalities were frivolous.
“There are other people on this boat.”
“River’s big enough for all of us, I reckon.”
“Fix it.”
“Or what?” There’s a wicked gleam in your eye. “We both know I have the upper hand here.”
“Or I call the entirety of the Avengers here and haul your ass to prison.”
“Will they bring snacks?”
You’re insufferable. You know it. But you also are the fastest way to get out of this situation and right now, he didn’t want to be responsible for a shipwreck simulation.
“Fine. Tell me what you want.”
“I like soy chips.”
“Soy chi-” He nearly throws his hands up in frustration. “You know what I’m talking about.”
“I want one historical artifact so I can impress the kids. They think I’m the cool teacher and I want to keep that reputation alive.”
“What makes you think I can arrange for that?”
“You’ve been alive since goddamn dinosaurs roamed this earth, I’m sure you have some connections.” You pause to assess his face. “You know, you don’t look a day over 29. Dermatologists must hate yo-”
“I’ll get you an artifact, now fix the fuckin’ boat.”
“You promise?” You grin brightly.
He stares at you. You are unyielding.
The boat’s uncomfortably small and people are beginning to take notice. Worried murmurs fill the air behind him.
“Yes.”
“Okay.” You shrug simply.
You kneel over, picking up the chip from the ground. You do nothing else for two minutes, instead turning away from him to look at the Statue of Liberty that was coming closer.
It takes him a while to realise that half his body isn’t hanging off his chair anymore. The ceiling is moving further and further away from the top of his head.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” He wants to strangle you.
Why did he listen to you when all of this would have been over the minute he kicked it off the ship.
“You can drop it off at my lair on Monday and pick it up on Friday.” You gather your belongings, leaving him steaming behind you. “Nice talkin’ to ya, Sergeant.”
You step over him, flashing him a quick smile before walking off the boat with the rest of the tourists as if nothing had just taken place. When he looks down, the stupid ring box is on his lap.
He sits there, unmoving, eyes fixed on the container.
The ferry conductor asks if he’s going to get off the boat.
He simply shakes his head.

Taking Chances Ch. 23: Stealing the Batmobile (Alt Prompt Driving)
AO3
Prev
Marinette looks at her little brother with an amused expression before asking:
“He really stole the Batmobile?”
“Yup. Claimed he was a better driver than me.” Dick says with a snort. Marinette winces.
“To be fair, he’s probably right. You’re kind of an awful driver.” She says with an apologetic smile. Dick clutches his heart and sniffles loudly.
“My own flesh and blood!” He cries dramatically. Damian scoffs.
“Tt. She is on my side, Grayson. As she should be since she is <i>my<i> flesh and blood.” He says with a scowl.
“The pain!” Dick cries, throwing himself off the couch and onto the ground. Jason just sighs and shakes his head, while Tim looks on tiredly. The five of them had decided to hang out at the manor together earlier, which had somehow shifted into telling stories about each other and funny things that had happened. Marinette loved hearing stories about her brothers from when they were younger.
“Out of all of us, I am likely the most competent driver.” Damian says, glancing at Marinette before nodding once. “And I assume Marinette would be the second most competent.” He adds. Marinette’s face instantly turns red- she’d never driven before. Her little brother (who was two years younger) was already a great driver. And she…..was not.
“Oh, uh, I’ve actually never driven before.” She admits. Damian frowns.
“Wait, you’re almost fifteen and you’ve never driven before?” Jason asks, leaning forward. “Like, ever”
“Well, no. You can’t get a license in France until you’re eighteen. So no one in their right mind is going to let a fourteen year old drive around the city.” She explains. She watches as a thoughtful look crosses Damian’s face before settling back into a neutral mask.
“I require your assistance with something. Follow me.” He says, standing and walking out of the room.
“Er, okay.” She says, furrowing her eyebrows. “We’ll be right back.” She reassures her other brothers. She walks quicker, trying to catch up with Damian who was practically running at this point. He glances at her and raises an eyebrow.
“Did the others act as if they would follow?” He asks. She frowns, but shakes her head. “Excellent.” He says, opening one of the entrances to the Batcave. She follows him, but freezes as they walk in and she sees where he’s heading.
“Damian, we’d get into so much trouble.” She says, planting her feet and freezing in place.
“Not if we aren’t caught. Which we will be if we don’t leave soon.” He says, rushing into the changing room. She stays where she is, glancing down at Tikki peeking out of her purse.
“Marinette, your father would not like this.” She warns. Marinette bites her lip.
“I know, but Damian seemed so excited.” She counters, with a small smile. Tikki gives her an unimpressed look. Marinette watches as her little brother walks back out, dressed in his uniform. He nods at her once and then climbs into the driver’s side. She hesitates, weighing her options. She could go with and attempt to drive the Batmobile, or she could watch her little brother drive away and know that no one knew where he was. Crap. Pushing away every instinct telling her this is a horrible idea, she rushes after Damian and hops into the car, calling her transformation as she does. She grins at her brother, her Ladybird suit had started giving her more confidence than her Ladybug suit. It was odd, but she loved it. He immediately slams on the gas, driving out of the cave and into Gotham.
“Ukht, will you be driving as well?” He asks and she hesitates before nodding. It was the Batmobile, what could go wrong?
---
Okay apparently a lot could go wrong, she thinks, watching as the Batmobile slides into the Gotham river.
“How the fuck did you guys manage that?” A voice asks. She whirls around, wincing when she sees Jason, as Red Hood. She can’t see his face but she can just imagine the look he’s giving them.
“In my defense, we were left unsupervised.” She says. He scoffs.
“You little shits left us!” He reminds her.
“Ladybird had never had the chance to drive before. It made sense to make sure that she could drive and to train her in case she ever needs to utilize a vehicle on patrol.” Damian reasons. And yeah, the reasons are sound. But the Batmobile slowly sinking into the river kind of makes his reasons weak. Just a bit.
“And driving into the river was, what, to see if she could drive a boat?” Jason asks, crossing his arms.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Hood. That’s a car.” She says, the words tumbling out of her mouth. She regrets it, but only for a second because then she hears Damian snort. Score! Every time she was able to make her angriest brother laugh, she gave herself a point. She was so close to double digits.
“Well B’s gonna be ready to go on patrol in less than an hour. Either of you two geniuses have any ideas on how to get the car out of the river and back to the cave?” Jason asks, pulling Marinette from her silent celebration.
“We could call a tow truck.” She suggests.
“Tt. That is unwise. The Batmobile is not a regular car.” Damian argues and she huffs.
“Okay well, last I checked you didn’t have any bright ideas either.” She quips, annoyed with him again. They were good at that. Laughing one minute, then annoying each other the next. She figured it just meant they were doing something right as siblings.
“Ladybird might actually have a good idea, Robin. Unless you want to call Superman here and have him rat you out to B.” Jason says. A devious smirk stretches onto Damian’s face and Marinette suppresses a shudder. She was definitely glad the kid was on her side. Most of the time, anyway.
“Excellent point, Hood.” He says, clearing his throat slightly before yelling. Well, not really yelling. Just talking slightly louder than normal. “Jon. I require your assistance.” A few moments later a boy flies down and lands in front of Damian. If she didn’t know any better, Marinette would assume the boy was another of her dad’s kids. Dark hair, blue eyes. But this kid had a huge smile stretched across his face. So maybe not.
“Hey Robin! I haven’t seen you in ages!” The boy says cheerfully before waving at Red Hood. He turns to her and his smile falters slightly before it’s back full blast. He sticks out his hand. “Nice to meet you! I’m Superboy.” He says. Marinette grins, shaking his hand back.
“Ladybird, and likewise.” She says.
“So what-” Jon (Superboy?) starts, glancing at the river, eyes widening at the car. “Did you steal the Batmobile again!?” He yelps, obviously shocked. And concerned. Which she understood. It’s not everyday you see the Batmobile slowly sinking into the Gotham river.
“Er, temporarily misappropriated.” Marinette says, glaring at Jason who snorts at her response.
“No, they definitely stole it. And Ladybird here decided she’d try to drive for the first time. What I’m not understanding is why you knuckleheads thought it’d be smart to drive so close to the river?” He says.
“Obviously I wasn’t thinking clearly, Hood. Can we please just focus on getting the car out of the river before I’m murdered by Batman?” Marinette rambles, looking pleadingly at Jon. It was odd, begging a little kid to drag her superhero dad’s super car out of a river, but it had to be done.
“Oh, yeah, of course!” Jon says, his earlier shock replaced with a wide smile once again. He flies over and grabs the car, gently pulling it up and placing it back on the road. Marinette winces at the water pouring out of the car. She was so grounded.
---
Walking into the Batcave, Bruce frowns at the lack of Batmobile. He’d passed Tim and Dick on his way to the Cave, so he knew they didn’t have it. Which left his two most mischievous sons and the daughter they had so easily corrupted. Hopefully they were just getting fast food or something again. Hopefully nothing bad was happening. He winces. That was unlikely with his children. He rushes over to the computer, tracking the Batmobile and accessing the cameras near the car. The image in front of him makes him pinch the bridge of his nose and grit his teeth.
“Just one day, one day is all I ask.” He mumbles under his breath. Because of course traffic cameras would catch Superboy lifting the Batmobile out of the river. Of course. He sits in his chair and watches as the kids argue for a few minutes before getting in the car and driving off. He tracks them all the way until they’re past cameras, and then he waits. Knowing it’ll only be moments until they’re in the Cave. He sits, silent as they get out of the car.
“No, seriously, he’s gonna know.” Marinette is saying, obviously looking nervous.
“Then beg Tikki to take all the water out or something. It’ll be fine, Pix.” Jason says.
“She’s gonna be so mad at me though. She warned me that it was a bad idea.” Marinette says, and Bruce decides to speak up.
“She was right.” He says, turning his chair to face them.
“SHIT! Goddamn you Bruce, why the hell would you sneak up on us like that?” Jason huffs out, glaring at him.
“Perhaps it’s the same reason that you three thought it was a good idea to steal the Batmobile.” Bruce says, crossing his arms.
“Uh, fuck that. I wasn’t in on it. I went out to try and find the little shits when I realized they were gone.” Jason argues, crossing his arms too.
“Ukht had never driven before. I believed it was a useful skill that she could utilize on future missions or patrols.” Damian says simply, his calm demeanor the complete opposite of Marinette’s current demeanor. She’s obviously panicked and anxious, avoiding looking at him. He feels his former resolve soften slightly. No one was hurt, they obviously felt bad. And Marinette obviously felt bad about it. But still….
“You’re benched for the night. Both of you.” He instructs. Damian grits his teeth but nods, while Marinette looks confused.
“But I’m not even-” She starts to say, stopping as Jason throws a hand over her mouth. “Well, well, look at the time. I’ll take them upstairs and tuck ‘em in before patrol.” Jason says, rushing away with Marinette and leaving Damian behind. Damian turns to Bruce and frowns.
“It did not go unnoticed by me, Father, that you benched the one child you do not allow to patrol. You may have done this in an attempt to not punish Marinette, but make no mistake she will remember this. And she will be on patrol later this week. After all, you only benched her for tonight.” Damian says, nodding at his father before walking away. Bruce sighs. He hadn’t thought this one through.
---
“What was that for?” Marinette asks, frowning at her brother as he drags her to the house. She drops her transformation as they walk, wincing slightly at the ‘we’ll talk later’ look from Tikki. Oh yeah, she was definitely getting lectured.
“He just benched you for tonight, right?” Jason asks, a smirk on his face. Marinette huffs.
“Yeah, but I’m not even technically allowed on patrols.” She reminds him.
“Except now, you’re technically allowed to come tomorrow. He said you were ‘benched for the night’.” Jason points out. Marinette opens her mouth to argue, then closes it. She blinks before a wide smile stretches across her face. Was she really gonna get to go back on patrol on a technicality? Suddenly, she no longer regretted driving the Batmobile into the river.

Tumblr media
'Shes a big fluffy teddy bear, and loves hugs, even if Shes crushing me~' henry froze hands quivering nervously over the keyboard. You replied? You actually? Holy shit! He bit his lip sitting up straighter with a grin and smoothed his hair back. He wasn't sure why it made him so happy but? He had a reply, and actual reply from a person! A woman!
Now what?
He wracked his brain and frowned. What does he say? Does he ask questions or just talk about dogs? He didn't know all he did know is that he had messaged a complete stranger and she had messaged back.
'I can imagine moving her must be hard work if she's comfy'
'Yeah but on the plus side she's always warm~ a huge hot water bottle'
'A numb but warm set of legs then😂'
'Absolutely! That sounds like the talk of a man who's been there?'
'Yes I have an American Akita, a very snuggly boy that gives me atleast one dead leg a day😅'
'Aww I love Akita's, I was going to get one but them Amii sort of fell into my lap, and has stayed there ever since'
'Big or small a lap dog is a lap dog'
'Definitely😂' Henry paused. Shit what does he do now? Does he just ask questions? Explain a bit more about himself? Both seemed a little too juvenile... And it was scary... Awkward he wants a nice chat, for conversation to flow naturally. He didn't want to fuck up. There was another ping as you typed another message.
' I have to say I'm surprized I got a message on here, only been on here for a few days😅' henry was thankfull, you wasn't going to judge. You were both in the same boat. Both nervously talking to a stranger in the hopes of there being something more. It made replying a little easier, he hoped that things would get less awkward after breaking the ice.
'Really? I made mine today... not sure about all this new online stuff but will figure it out'
'Well I'd say your doing alright,  at least you had the courage to message someone, i made the profile then chickened out😅'
'I almost did, your the first profile that caught my eye'
'Was it Amii?'
'No, as cute as she is you lacked a duck face selfie, and you look very sweet and have kind eyes' henry froze after sending the message. Shit, shit! That was fucking cheese! Cringe and just a fuck up! He quickly wracked both hands through his hair and cursed trying to think of a way to get out of this but nothing came to mind... And then he saw it the tiny y/n is typing... At the bottom of the screen, he winced dreading the reply he was going to get. He bit his lip worried he hopes he hasn't tripped at the first hurdle.
'Thank you that's kind of you to say. And is a missing duck face that strange?🤔'
'Every woman has a duck face'
'Well I do not have a duck face'
'Really?🤨'
'Well not a good one 😅My duck face is sub par more a fish face, call me guppy😂' he chuckled, you did have a sense of humour which was good. He liked making people laugh and not having them take everything so seriously, it meant he could relax and let loose. To just have fun! He heaved a big sigh unconsiously petting Kal as he sat up and leant on his leg. He quickly began typing once more finding it easier chatting with a stranger with each message.
'🤣🤣 I got to admit I'm not sure what to talk about, this is my first time🤔'
'Well that makes us both online virgins😅lets start with the important things shall we?' Henry froze panicking. 'Oh god! Oh god! What ere you going to ask?!' He thought watching the little dots on the screen holding his breath dreading you'd ask for picture or something. He was put out of his misery with a tiny ping sound and your message popped up. He threw his head back and laughed outloud seeing the all important question.
'Who's your favourite superhero?' You were definitely a geek girl, just like he wanted. He bit his lip and typed without needing to think of the answer.
'Superman, afterall he is the grand daddy of all superheroes. You?'
'Oh your not gonna like this~ I love batman🤗' henry smiled at the screen and leant back wiping his mouth trying to massage the ache from his cheeks. He really was grinning ear to ear just from speaking to you so... Unguarded he was just being himself and it was freeing!
'Oh no!😱can I ask why?' He typed quickly not wanting you to think he was going to keep you on read? Was that what they called it nowadays?
'He proves that at 30 you can have a dramatic goth early midlife crisis and that regular assholes can be heroes too, all you need is money🤗🤗'
'🤣🤣 oh god! You know I never thought of it like that!' henry shook his head laughing out loud as he replied
'But you'll be happy to know supes is number three on my list'
'Well he makes the top three so that's salvageable😆'
'Yeah... Two is Captain America though'
'Rich goth with issues, man with an expensive tea tray, then supes got it 👌👍'
'Omg yes!😂that's sums it up beautifully🤣' after that the conversation moved on which he was a little thankful for. Not that he disliked geeking out but... it'd be easy for him to slip up on that subject. Luckily though he didn't have to think of a change of topic as you began chatting away casually about your day and he did in return before long the conversation was over too soon as you stated you really had to get on with filling out these payslips. So the chat drew to a close with promises of speaking tomorrow.
Tumblr media
And you kept your promise. For the next week you both spent your evenings chatting away at one another becoming fast friends. That was when he decided to let his family know in the new weekly face time zoom chats.
He looked to the screen fidgeting as his family spoke amongst themselves trying to find the right moment to break the news. But his mother had noticed and asked him out right, leaning closer to the screen watching him worriedly.
"Henry? Are you alright your looking nervous?" The others stopped speaking at the question and henry heaved a sigh nervously twisting his fingers.
"Yeah yeah I... I just have some news... Is all" he said swallowing trying to find the words. He was worried, it had been a while since he'd tried to introduce someone new into his life and his family. He didn't want to alarm them but... he wanted to forewarn them that he was on his way to hopefully sharing his life with someone.
"News? Oh its nothing bad is it?" His younger brother asked, but his oldest paused straightening up with a smile already guessing his brother had taken his advice.
"No nothing bad... Its really good actually... I'm sort of... well I'm speaking to someone online... A woman"  he stuttered rubbing the back of his neck and called Kal onto the sofa with him stroking his fur trying to calm himself and fend of the huge grin that seemed to spread across his face everytime he thought of you.
"You did it?" His eldest brother called out clapping his hands excitedly. A ripple of confusion washed over the others and they frowned looking to one another unsure what had happened between the two.
"Did what love?" His mother finally asked not understanding what her sons were talking about
"I made an online dating profile" he said plainly drawing gasps from everyone.
"Oh gosh love are you okay? Your not being hounded are you?" His mother jumped immediately concern etched deep in her features. His father looked uncomfortable-hell they all did! Each worrying over him. He wasn't surprized they had seen fans both love and hate on him and his partners.
"No mum its fine-better then fine I'm really carful... I've covered my ass and no one knows its me, she doesn't know" he said trying to placate his family but instead he was rewarded with disappointed faces, tutting and small, cringing hisses. Fuck.
"Oh god Henry you haven't made a fake profile? Tell me you didn't- please tell me your not lying to this poor woman" his father scolded sternly. His dad may not be up to speed with all this new age online dating shenanigans but he did know that it was wrong to lie to a potential partner. Just thinking that one of his boys were doing just that left a bad taste in his mouth. If he could he would clip his son around the ear!
"Well no not exactly- its me and I'm myself on there I just... changed my name to Hank... And crop my photos so she can see me but not recognise me that's all! I swear I'm not lying or-or anything!" he explained willing then to understand but with the deep sighs and unimpressed looks he got it would seem they didn't understand or approve.
"Are you sure about this? What will she think if things get serious and then this young lady finds out you've been lying?" he father spoke up again wanting to hash this out. Henry faltered for a moment, he worried about that too. He was frightened that you'd get angry and leave him without even giving him a chance!
"I'm not lying, I just? just omitting certain details about my life, I'm being me I'm showing her the real quirky geeky side of me- this is? Its my one shot! The only chance I'm going to get to have someone look at me, not what they can get out of me... I'm not going to blow it or hurt her... if we get to that point then I will explain things- she'd understand she's really thoughtful and is logical" henry pleaded trying to convince both himself and his family. He cant ignore it, he was worried and had been telling himself over and over you'd understand. But he also knew it could really shake you up. But what he was doing wasn't wrong! It couldn't be helped, he thought they would understand!
"Well I hope so because you could break her heart son... And I want you to understand that, this woman could fall for you. You could really upset her when she finds out" his father finally spoke drawing the issue to a close not wanting to argue, but he still wanted henry to know what ever happens was his own fault good or bad. Not everything ends with a happy ever after, but he didn't need to voice that out loud. Henry knew, they all did.
"I know dad, I've only been speaking to her just over a week anyway, for all i know she will ghost me or something" henry nodded calming a little not wanting to fight but still it was clear to everyone henry hadn't appreciated the lecture.
"Ghosting?" he mum perked up trying to diffuse the situation not wanting this to blow up. Tensions were high and no one needed a family spat at the moment.
"Its when someone stop talking to you and ignores you for no reason" his brother revealed explaining the term to his parents. They both ahh'd in realisation but were still a little tense. So his younger brother spoke up deciding to try and be more supportive to him. And henry was thankful.
"Well how about you tell us about her henry. What's you lady freind like? What does she do?" henry quickly grinned forgetting the irritation. His family watched the sudden change as henry got the chance to boast about the woman who had caught his fancy. It was sobering to see, he was glowing with pride and excitement, overjoyed from just thinking about this mystery girl.
"She's just? God where do I start? Shes amazing and funny and wholesome... She doesn't live too far away- Shes pretty much on my doorstep! Shes really funny and nice we talk everyday and have soo much in common its amazing we like the same music and tv and just- everything! Its like talking to a female version of myself! And Shes a fan too" his family all seemed to warm to the idea of this woman until his final remark. Everyone paused. And so did he, what was so wrong about her being a fan? Why was that a red flag for them and not him?
"A fan? Henry... are you sure she doesn't know? If she's a fan she might know and be... making her answers more favourable" henry bristled at that and visibly leaned back brows furrowed and eyes glowing, showing as much anger as he dared show his mother who had spoken out against you.
"What? No! No she doesn't mum she hasn't got a clue- Shes not a fan of mine per say but? She likes my work, she's a huge lover of DC and fantasy so has seen the Witcher and she loved it! Shes really just like me! Is that really hard to believe? That there are women like me? That enjoy the same things?" what had started as a panicked explination quickly became heated and sour. His words slowly becoming uncharacteristically venomous. But Marie Ann new it was just him getting defensive, he was frightened. He had this silly belief he was an abnormality, that his interests will make him forever alone. The thing that did stand out was just how defensive he was about you. A woman he'd probably not even met yet, someone he was only chatting to. It wasn't like henry to take to someone soo quickly. It made her hopeful, that he really had found someone, found his soulmate. But she was a mother and couldn't help worry over him, no matter how old or huge her boys got they were just that. Her boys. And she will always feel the need to look after them.
"Henry please don't get angry, I didn't mean to upset you but... I worry" she said slowly trying to calm him before he got himself into a tizzy. She could see much more then he wanted her too. And right now he was anxious, probably questioning himself over this woman and the way he was approaching her. She could only hope her son was right and had covered his ass and that this woman was as understanding as he said. Otherwise henry was about to get a wakeup call like never before. It wasn't everyday a well known actor fakes a dating profile. It'd be a media shitstorm that he may not recover from.
"I.. sorry I didn't mean to- y/n isn't like that I... I just know alright she isn't after anything" henry apologized smoothing back his hair taking a huge breath and leant back once more relaxing.
"So why don't you tell us a little more about her son? You've been speaking for a week so must know a little more then her name and were she lives?" she said moving on wanting to coax more information about the woman.
"Well she has her own successful business that caters to dogs, walking, grooming and rehoming and is a kc registered breeder. Shes thirty years old and... Absolutely stunning- and no she hasn't filtered any photos either...wait here! See?! Isn't she beautiful?" Henry gushed quickly bringing up your profile picture he had saved on his phone and holding the phone to the camera. He heard a few compliments but could still see the worry in his family. He understood but he just new. He new that you were real, that you were honest and everything you said you were. You were blunt and didn't have time for games, you said life's too short for that crap. And he agreed.
"You have a photo saved already?" henry faltered at the question that had followed a round of compliments and quickly pulled his phone back flushing embarrassed he hadn't even thought of how that would look
"I.. w-well yeah... I'm gonna ask for her number soon and want a photo for my phone... We decided to stick to messaging for a while first and" he tried desperately to dig himself out of the hole he'd just unceremoniously swan dived into. But his brothers burst into laughter making whipping motions making him flush and shrink further. They were definetly going to busting his balls for this. But with a quick shake of his head he continued to gush about you wanting to side step this whole premature photo saving incident.
"she doesn't have Instagram or snapchat... she's just... I can't explain it she's just funny and sweet and genuine... I really like her.. I could easily fall for her" silence reigned after his admission and everyone saw just how serious and devoted henry was to trying to make this relationship work. His mum nodded with a smile, this was just a watch and wait scenario. This woman would either make or break her son, and all she could do was hope to god it was the former.
"Okay then love. I'm happy for you henry just be careful okay?" she finally drew the curtain on the subject and everyone sighed in relief.
"I will, I promise but you have nothing to worry about, I just wanted to let you guys know that i might have someone for you to meet in a few months" henry said eagerly, like a small boy waiting on Christmas eve. He was full of life and enthusiasm. It was nice to see this side to him again, she'd dare say he was well on his way to being loved up! Smitten.
"And we look forward to it henry, but take your time. There's no rush just enjoy yourself" one of his brothers spoke up jumping in on the conversation wanting to make it clear they all had his back whether this ended good or bad. For now they were happy for him.
"I will, we decided were wont meet for a while and just see how things go for the time being but... I have a good feeling, she's everything I've been looking for I'm really excited" henry preened trying to pace himself, he didn't need to be daydreaming in a family face time. Luckily he was pulled from the edge of his own fantasies by another question.
"You said she had a company?"
"Yeah here I'll send you the link its called Puptown! She's actually handled Kal a few times, I send him there for his nails and teeth" henry said quickly sending the link to his brother. He wasn't stupid they were going to look you up, they were worried. He might aswell sent them the link. There was a tiny bio on there of you- the owner on the staff page that had all the staffs qualifications and roles on there.
Tumblr media
You moved through the groom room Amii was curled up under your desk fast asleep as you began taking a stock list. Recently you'd been getting more and more white dogs in for their groom so needed to top up on the bright white shampoo and it was tick season soon so had to double check you had all the tick removal forceps, and ear powder- lots of ear powder the poodle clients had doubled over lock down after all the new puppies bought in lockdown. Every dog deserves a professional groom. But poodles needed them.
"hey boss! You doing another check?" Mandy called as she hoisted a tiny black poem into the bath. Bella a regular and very few people could actually groom her out of the five staff only two of you dared to try. And you didn't blame them this dog was a tiny savage, but the trick was not to show fear.
"yeah, trying to prepare for summer already, you know i think this will be our busiest yet especially with lord whiskey." you muttered nibbling the pen and moving a few bottles about. Flea treatment and some dry skin conditioner were quickly added to your growing list.
"lord whiskey?" Mandy asked louder over the sound of the shower instantly Bella began snarling like the hell demon she was. On walks and about the place she was a little soppy loving lap pup, but when it came to bath time? Different dog. You cant help thinking she had a bad experiance before she came here. You sighed and placed the pad and pen down standing along side the bathe and began petting the tiny dog.
"yeah they are the vet clinic for lower incomes... They want to set up a new clinic and have reached out" you explained you had to admit the request came out of the blue and you hadn't had chance to tell everyone yet. The staff meeting was on Friday.
"that would be good!" she said slowly wetting the snarling prom that was trying her absolute hardest to frighten you both off. But alas she was no great wolf, but a teeny cute little raging fluff nugget, and to her utter dispair neither you or Mandy found her scary at all. Even if she was trying to foam at the mouth.
"yeah that's what I thought, having a vet on site... We're still talking but if everything goes acording to plane we will have the mobile vet out front while setting up the small clinic... I was thinking in the old groom rooms? They had water and electricity already and its a littl out of the way so the unwell puppets can be separate from the healthy customers" you shrugged moving around Mandy to help tend to your most vocal customer.
"so business will be booming?" Mandy said moving to rinse underneath the small feral beast. You giggled and stood Bella on her back legs as she seethed but in between her savagery she was actually licking at you, showing a hint of the sweet girl she really was. You pet her praising her promising chicken treats and snuggles afterwards. You might even pop Amii in with the others in the small day care pen. Bella liked laying on her using the huge dog as a fluffy bed.
"yes hopefully, i mean were not taking anything for them, they are a charity but hopefully we will get a few visits in the shop? And the more people know about us the more likely they are to use us!" you said you had been weighing up the pros and cons about the new venture. More people visiting the premises, more footfall in the shop and hopefully you can draw enough people to have a little pet café. Your business was right on the edge of the huge woodland park you'd always wanted a small café that serves both animals and people you want a little empire to become a franchise company and give the little guys a chance.
"And how about you? Any luck on the online dating front?" she asked with a small smile. You sighed you half regretted telling her about it. Mandy has been with you since the beginning, she was your first employee and most trusted freind. And she has been hounding you about your love life for a while now. She wants you to take a step back from Puptown and find some time for yourself, and now that the business was established and ticking over nicely it was the time to do it.
"Ooo! Oh my god your blushing!? Bitch spill!" she squealed excited as you flushed and looked away not answering her. And by doing so answering her at the same time.
"I'm talking to someone~ Hank.. He is... Funny and charming we've been chatting each night for about a week" you revealed quietly making her beam at you. Thankfully Bella chose that moment to make a mad dive over your shoulder but you managed to catch her and pop her back into the tub.
"ooo yes get in girl, you have been pouring too much into this company! Its about damn time you focused on yourself" sandy began as she washed Bella lathering the pup with a rather expensive de-sheading anti tangle shampoo.
"Please don't start, I'm doing it now and that's what matters. He is... He messaged me first and things are going good and that's where I'm going to leave it okay? I will update you as we go... I promise" you said releasing the now wet pup as Mandy began rinsing her down. You stepped back to the shelves full of half empty bottles of product. needing to change the topic to avoid daydreaming and fucking up your orders. As great as the wholesaler was this was still expensive stuff and you didn't want to unbalance the books and get more then you needed.
"Oh Bella?~ baby girl its so bad isn't it? Being brushed and washed and massaged? Then getting yourself a blow out and having a nap in the nice cosy play room?" you called over your shoulder condescendingly at the pup who was still snarling out her displeasure. She really was a little brat in the bath.

Another week passed and you were lazing around the house having a duvet day, snuggled in bed with Amii on your lap. Normally your days off were all housework and finalizing orders or paper work but this week was different. With lord whiskey agreeing to taking the old groom room you decided to finally get an extra set of hands in management to take care of paperwork. It was strange at first but worth it. You now hade someone else to rely on, not that you didn't have managers to help out before but now you had a full time employee that's whole role was to take care of the business side and alleviate the pressure. So instead of the normal made rushes and mountain of paperwork you were in bed chatting away with henry.
He had just finished his work out and was relaxing, having a cool down before having yet another painfully boring sounding meeting with his own bosses. You sympathised. Practical work was the bomb! But the theory and paperwork kicked everyones asses. Risk assessments can eat shit! I'm a person and can asses the risk and decided to do it, why answer to a tick box system? But then again everything needed a tick in a box nowadays. You shuffled about grunting as Amii played dead on your lap so you couldn't move her from the comfy slump she was in over your thighs pinning you down.
'Soo you said you game?'  was the message that changed the subject, thankfully choosing to move on from speaking about work.
'God yes, when I can'
'What do you play? Sims and stuff?'
'depends if I'm on pc or xbox I'm more into fantasy and historic rpgs, but if I'm on my switch its little farming sims sometimes I branch out to things like shooters but not often, I like the big immersive fantasies!'
'So you really do mix and match are you playing anything atm?'
'I'm doing a re-run of skyrim with a load of mods just to spice things up. And just restarted Witcher wild hunt again'
'You like Witcher?'
'I adore it, Witcher skyrim and dragon age are my all time favourites, do you? Sorry I realise I'm just takeing over, I just get excited, I never really talk about this stuff 😅😅'
'No, no its fine I'm the same, I never really get to geek out anymore with work and stuff. I'm happy to have the chance, and I do love the Witcher too fantasy is my thing😄' henry paused for a moment. Should he? I mean you just said you were replaying it... Would it be big headed? To ask what you thought of the show? Of his performance... I mean it'd be an unbiased view, you wasn't going to try and butter him up you still didn't know it was him.
'So you've watched the show on Netflix I presume?' he typed and pressed send quickly before he lost his nerve.
'Absolutly, I binge watched it a few times.😅'
'You liked it? I know a few people didn't' henry couldn't help but dig a little deeper, he desperately wanted you to have enjoyed it.
'I loved it, but I think it was easier for me to watch bc I new what was roughly going on before hand. Most people that struggled thought it was going to be an easy watch? Like got'
'Oh come on, there must be something you didn't like?🤔🤔'
'😞okay you got me, I was a tad disappointed with geralts eyes you can do the toxic eyes and cat eye potion at least give me a teeny cat eye just a smidge🤏🥺'
'Yes I see what you mean, their could have been a little frame of it but there are always sacrifices when going from books to the big screen 😅'
'But henry's portrayal more then made up for it! That man was on point! I was so happy when they anounced it was him playing Geralt there was no way he was going to fuck it up!' henry stopped breathing. You liked it? You actually like him playing Geralt? His heart swelled and he laughed out loud for some reason you enjoying his work just... It meant the world to him! He was over the moon. Quickly his attention was drawn to his tablet again as another message pinged on screen.
'And I have a little fan theory over the whole eye issue😏'
'Hit me with it I'm all ears'
'Geralt has complete control of his eyes right? And is a softy deep down so my idea was he is always holding his pupils open so he doesn't scare anyone'
'🧐that is brilliant! It makes so much sense! 🥰🥰 its also nice to know I have a little conspiracy fangirl on my hands😁'  henry frowned heart clenching as you went quiet, he waited and waited minuets seemed like hours. His mind immediately jump to conclusions terrified you had caught him, that you'd figured out just who you were speaking to. Sweat formed on his brow as he frowned praying he hadn't got a little to close to home and given himself away. Then the dots appeared. You were typing.
'So I was wondering I know we agreed not to at first but since we've chatting every night I thought we could maybe exchange numbers? Only if you want to! No pressure. I'm just excited' henry slumped, melting into his seat. Thank fuck for that! His relief quickly became excitement at the prospect of hearing you! Actually speaking to you properly having an actual phone call? Fuck yes!
'😊😊I was actually trying to find the time to mention it myself, i know its only been three weeks but it feels much longer.'
'Omg thank god! I thought you would think i was rushing you😅here xxx xxxx xxxx' henry was quick to pull out his phone and type the number in, not wasting any time in creating your contact info into his phone book. And whislt doing that also replied to you putting you at ease.
'No not at all, I'm excited I cant wait to hear you🥰'
'Oh god don't build your hopes to high I don't have the most attractive voice it may be the deal breaker😅'
'I doubt that anything could put me off you love, your gorgeous, smart, funny, kind everything I could of dreamed of and soo much more'
'I'm glad its not only me Hank, I have to say I was frightened by how quickly we have become friends, but I suppose it makes sense we are two peas in a pod' henry grinned reading the message and nodded to himself pressing the small green call button and held the phone to his ear feeling confident as he re-read your last message.
Tumblr media
You hummed nibbling your lip, chewing it nervously after giving out your number. You couldn't help your mind dredging up all the horror stories of Ted bundy-esque creepy ass psycho killers, luring in prey on the internet... Fuck you were a bigger girl so easy to sweet talk. You whined and snuggled into the massive furry lump on your lap, lacing your fingers into the dogs thick fur. Petting her as your over active imagination conjured scenario's that could end up with you in a eight foot hole in someone's basement ,being told to 'put the lotion in the basket'. Jesus Christ. But it was fine right? He wasn't weirded out or anything? He seemed happy. You were sensible, or at least you thought you were.
You yipped at your phone suddenly vibrated in your hand, you almost threw it across the room. The screen lit up with 'unknown number' you swallowed eyeing the device then nodded answering the call heart beat thundering in your chest your breath picked up you made to speak but couldn't quite make sounds, unable to force the words to roll off your tongue. There was a deep chuckle, gorgeas and rumbling even if it was quiet.
"You have no reason to be frightened darling I'm just as eager to move on" you gasped as the thick voice spoke in slow syllables, calling you by the nick name he had taken to calling you. You'd asked a few girls at work about it, worried things were going to fast. But they had calmed you down saying it was his way of avoiding being freind zoned. You had to admit the cute little names always made you grin and blush, but this? God this was better then anything! His low timber and slightly more eloquent accent uttering the name sent a shiver up your spine.
A surprizing reaction in all honesty, you'd never really thought about voices much, never had a voice kink or really thought anyone could have an attractive voice. Well not a real voice anyway, sometimes characters on tv with low raspy voices got you going Geralt and Alcide to name a few. He almost sounded like the former if you thought about it... Just more refined? A regal soft lilt.  It was definetly a voice you could listen to all day, this man could read you a bloody take away menu and you wouldn't even gruff at the extortionate prices. You wet your lips and dug your fingers into the warm dog in your lap breathing deep, filling your lungs with air trying to ease yourself and draw in some courage.
"O-oh your? Really there? Really.. real?" you stuttered slowly. You chided yourself for sounding so silly, so childish. But you couldn't help it you felt completely unprepared. Which irritated you because it was you who'd offered your number, what were you expecting him to do with it? Use carrier pigeon? Of course he was going to call you.
"I'm most definitely real love" he spoke again with a small chuckle, he was clearly amused by your flustered question. You blushed and squirmed on your seat trying to breath quietly, you didn't want him to hear just how on edge you were.
"Oh gosh that's.. wow I cant even, I don't know what to say" you huffed trying to think of something- anything else you could focus on rather then the absolute sex that was his voice, then he spoke once more
"Now, now don't be shy love, I want to hear you, your voice is just as I thought it'd be" henry tried encouraging you wanting to hear you and revel in your sweet voice, wanting to commit it to memory.
"Oh? And what's that then?" you asked trying to be playfull but in all honesty you wasn't hitting the mark, you were to nervous. You'd never really thought about your voice, was it attractive? Or too high? Deep? I mean you were normal, you spoke normal and if anything sounded common.
"Pure and delicate, playful and charming all in one just like the woman it belongs to" henry's breathing hitched as you giggled. The sweet tinkling laugher warmed his heart and made him huff out a chuckle himself. He was so happy he could have cried. It was just so overwhelming to hear you finally, to put a voice to the amazing woman he was slowly falling inlove with. He sometimes grew wary thinking you were too good to be true, that you were a catfish yourself. But here and now he knew. You were as real as him and all it did was solidify his resolve, he was doing the right thing. He was falling for a genuine woman. A real woman with no strings attached, and with any luck you were feeling the same.
"well I think I just found my mans flaw~" you giggled once more blushing under the weight of all the compliments. He was really smooth, smoother then you'd thought and that was saying something.
"really darling? Care to enlighten me?" he quipped playfully you usual banter and teasing between you both flowing just as effortlessly as it had when messaging each other.
"your clearly deaf! Well have no fear, i will talk a little louder and learn some sign language for you~" you laughed out loud he joined you low echoing chuckles that sounded as if they came from a deep wide chest. It was enough to drive you mad with lust, but that may be the new found voice kink brewing.
"well its nice to know you are so committed to your man and his disability love" suddenly you froze and trembled panic and anxiety washed over you clogging  your wind pipe at his words... Fuck!
"oh god- no I? Your not really deaf are you? I'm sorry I didn't mean to make fun-" you began apologizing not quite picking up on his sarcasm. Henry was quick to cut you off and stop your guilty rambling.
"No love I'm not deaf I was just pulling your leg" his voice was strained as if he was trying not to laugh at you, but you couldn't really say anything. You were the one nervously crack jokes then immediately trying to take them back. Stumbling your wat through the very first real conversation with a man you were crushing on. God you were such a dweeb!
"oh Jesus you scared the crap out of me" you heaved a sigh wanting to bury yourself into the covers and hide despite knowing he couldn't see your glowing face.
"I apologize darling, I have only the purest of intentions... Well maybe not that pure~ but I don't want to scare you" he grinned when you gasped at his little flirtatious comment. And he wasn't kidding, he found you incredibly attractive and wanted to do all manner of very filthy things with you. It didn't help when you were sending him photos of you drenched nipples hard and drawing him in like a moth to a flame. You probably hadn't even noticed that and he was thankfull for it because you wouldn't have sent it otherwise. It was his favourite photo, apparantly it had been a husky escape from the bath as you switched his lead to another hook.
"your fine, I'm just a little nervous is all" you huffed finally somehow managing to sort yourself out and think clearly overcoming your excitement and nerves.
"I understand but just remember its just me love. So have anything else planned for today?" henry hummed sweetly before giving you a chance to change the topic, you'd never know it was because he was barely holding himself together. He was almost bursting at the seams wanted to laugh and cry and shout all at once. He was completely overwhelmed with joy and relief and wanted to listen to you as much as he possibly could.
Tumblr media
Both you and henry then began the nightly ritual of phone calls and texted all day. He even had a new nick name. Puppy. And he couldn't be more thrilled you'd said it was because he made tiny cute puppy whines when you teased him. But he didn't care, he would happily be your puppy anyday!
The weeks became one month, then two and before you knew it you were one week shy of three months. And that was when it happened. Those fateful words left his mouth as he spoke to you just before bed. He had asked to meet, he was certain and confident he wanted to meet you and take this further, and he hadn't really planned to ask it just happened.
"So your really letting lord whiskey in your old groom space? That's incredible, I'm so proud of you for letting them in love. It says volumes for you and your business, that its not all profit driven" henry spoke down the phone as he stirred his tea getting ready to go up to bed.
"I mean it just seems right... No matter the income everyone should be able to get medical care for their animals. And I'd be lying if I didn't hope some people will come into the shop or realise that we are here and come back for our facilities." he smiled at that. You wasn't just trying to make a great profitable business, you cared and wanted to give everyone a reasonably priced alternative to pooch care. And he was right behind you, he loved that you were trying to give owners the chance to spoil their fur babies without breaking the bank. In slashing your prices you'd attracted more customers and been making a great profit, so much so that you could afford to just give away your old groom rooms to the charity for free.
"shop? You have a shop?" he pondered padding about the kitchen giving Kal his nightly biscuit treat and motioned for him to take it upstairs. Which he didn't need to do, Kal new the jig and was already carrying the treat to the stairs.
"yeah it opened last year? The year before maybe? Its small but here with food and treats a few toys and leads... I try to use smaller businesses the brands that you wont see in the bigger shops" you said slowly and he heard a small yawn and rustle of paper. You had said you were packing up and heading to bed for the night soon.
"I may have to pop over with the bear~" he teased coyly humming to himself as he sipped his tea.
"pop over? I.. Well you could I suppose?" you hummed quietly, henrys eyes almost popped out of his head were you inviting him to ask you out? He coughed quickly trying not to choke on the mouthful of tea and then rocked his head from side to side. I mean he could come over and see you.
"I'm only ten minuet's away darling, Kensington... I've actually used your grooming service once or twice getting the bears nails and teeth done"
"oh?! I didn't know that." you said trying to picture the owners of the akita you saw, but honestly? You had soo many customers now it was hard remembering everyone, that and you wasn't really front of house now, you had more and more to deal with back of house, even with the new manager.
"well you do now sweetheart... So? Do you want to meet up tomorrow?" he asked placing his tea down in favour of crossing his fingers hoping he had read your signals right.
"Yeah of course I'm covering for walking duty tomorrow... So I can't really do anything in the morning or early afternoon" henry fist pumped and grinned faking a silent shout of victory as he managed to wrangle a date.
"That's fantastic actually... I could meet you in the park? I'll bring the bear with me and we could walk the dogs and grab a coffee or something?" he said somehow managing to quell his excitement enough to arrange the date properly, placeing a hand on his heart as it beat wildly. The realisation that he could see you- meet you face to face!
"Yeah that sounds like a brilliant idea, will noon be alright? That's when we do a switch over and go back to feed the dogs in day care so I'll have an hour lunch break" you said stuttering a little when it began to sink in that this was happening!
"Its a date I will see you tomorrow at noon love" Henry anounced eagerly suddenly tomorrow couldn't come soon enough!
"See you then puppy, good night sweet dreams" you said needing to hang up and squeal into a pillow or something.
"sweet dreams love" as soon as he hung up he was already scrolling his phone selecting the number he was after and called in a tizzy.
"Piers?! Piers! I'm? Oh god- were meeting tomorrow and fuck- I'm freaking out already! What do I say? What should I wear- kal's coming too do I put his halti on or just his collar- fuck I don't know what to do!? Please help!" he yelped down the phone to the unsuspecting man drawing a deep sigh from him before he began talking him down.

Hurting
JJ Maybank x reader
⚠️: angst, sad, abuse
Tumblr media
JJ had been knocking on your door for the past seven minutes. The two of you got into a fight about JJ being too wreckless. To which JJ got defensive and Y/n got even more mad.
JJ later realized that all she wanted was to keep her boyfriend out of jail.
So he came to...apologize. Or at least attempt to.
But he knew you could be stubborn, and since you weren’t answering, he was going to leave. Until the door opened. And your step father was standing on the other side.
JJ had never met your family. From what you’ve told him, they weren’t around much.
“The hell are you?” The man asked, he seemed busy. He was on the phone, and seemed impatient with JJ.
“Uh..I’m Y/n’s boyfriend,” JJ said, somewhat confident.
The man was instantly surprised, his eyebrows furrowed, but then he backed away from the door. Then gestured for JJ to come inside. So he followed.
Your step father was working, JJ guessed if he was a lawyer or some other businessman type. He had computers open on the kitchen island.
JJ stood still, he was going to wait for you, and not look too comfortable.
Before JJ could go upstairs to get you, your step father ended his phone call and invited him to sit down.
“So what’s your name Son?” He asked.
“JJ.” He shrugged.
He chuckled, “what’s your real name?”
JJ wanted to scoff, but he tried to be respectful, “that’s what they call me,”
“So Y/n is your girlfriend?” He asked as if he didn’t believe it.
Your step father wanted to know things about you, it didn’t matter what. And JJ wasn’t supposed to be here.
“Yes. She’s my best friend. Sweetest girl I’ve ever met,” JJ answered.
“Any other reason you like her? Her and I don’t have the strongest relationship. However, I know you don’t just like her because she’s ‘sweet’,” your father asked. Insinuating something else.
JJ was offended, and as far as he could tell, this man is an asshole.
JJ scoffed, “she can hold her own,”
Your step father responded with a chuckle, “I’m sure. But what I meant was, are you two having sex?” He said as more of a statement.
JJ didn’t know what to say. So he just resorted to what he would say to anyone else.
“Yeah we are.” JJ responded bluntly.
Your father sighed, his eyebrows raised, “Are you two at least being safe?”
“No sir. Very unsafe.” JJ joked, but it came off in a way that he wanted to provoke your step father.
“What’s going on down here?” Your voice could suddenly be heard. You were standing at the bottom of the stairs. Your voice was soft and angelic, but concerned.
“Y/n go to your room,” your step father said strictly.
JJ expected you to argue, but you didn’t. His stomach dropped when he saw your eyes fall. You nodded and didn’t even look at JJ.
JJ couldn’t be the reason your father was taking anger out on you. He wouldn’t let that be him.
He got up and grabbed your hand before you walked away.
“Hey, baby, I came to say sorry, about before,” JJ said, not letting go of your hand.
“What were you thinking? He’s gonna kill me,” you whispered.
“Why?” JJ asked.
“Because..I’m not allowed to...you know,” you suggested.
You looked back at your father who was in the kitchen, staring at you both.
JJ has never seen you more tense.
“He’s mad because of me, Y/n. I’m sure he won’t take it out on you. It’s not your fault.”
“Oh you’re sure? Huh,” you sighed, “you’re an idiot sometimes JJ,” you scolded.
You were right, JJ was beginning to feel guilty, “well then I’m staying here. I’m gonna protect you from my mistakes,” JJ said.
“You think...” you were about to insult him, but you realized it was no use, he should just leave before he makes things worse.
“I think I’m staying.” JJ stated.
JJ has known you long enough to tell what you did when you were nervous or scared. You would play with the rings on your fingers, or avoid eye contact. And if it was really bad you would struggle with your words.
Now, you didn’t know what to say. JJ was stubborn, and always has his mind set on protecting you.
“J, I can handle him,” you told him, pushing him gently towards the door.
“Has he ever touched you before, y/n/n?” JJ whispered.
Your throat immediately went dry, “What?” You nearly coughed. You understood why JJ would assume that based on his own life, so you weren’t offended.
“Has he ever layed a hand on you?” he repeated, “you know what I mean.”
You felt your heart rate pick up, “no. He’s just strict. You should leave,”
“Y/n, don’t lie,” JJ pleaded.
“I’m not talking about this right now. You need to leave.” you told him.
“I’m only leaving if you come with me,” JJ proposed.
“I...I can’t,” you mumbled.
“Yes you can, baby,” JJ pleaded.
You stepped back from him, “stop treating me like I need pity. I don’t. Please just leave. We’ll talk tomorrow.”
“I’m not waiting a whole day to find out if your hurting,”
“I’m not hurting. I’m fine, JJ. Come on,” you nudged.
JJ stepped backwards out the door, “will you forgive me?” JJ asked, he wanted his girlfriend to be happy like she always was, he was truly sorry.
“You need to promise me something, though, okay?” You asked.
JJ nodded, “what is it?”
“You can’t come back here. Okay? Just...I’ll come to you.”
“No. Not a chance. What if something happens to you? No way.” JJ shook his head.
“Please. Nothing is going to happen to me! I told you. My step dad and I are fine,”
“Wait, your step dad? How long?” He was shocked he didn’t know.
“What?” You asked, gripping the frame of the door.
“Y/n, I don’t like this. How come you’ve never told me-“
“Jesus! We’re fucking fine,” you whispered the last part.
“Well I don’t belive you!” JJ retaliated.
You almost started crying right there, but you didn’t, you couldn’t do that. You decided to push him away.
“I hate you.” You said sourly, then closed the door on his face.
JJ was hurt. But he left your house anyway.
You turned around and nearly collapsed crying. But instead you immediately ran into your step father.
“So...my little girl has a boyfriend. And I didn’t know about it?” he shook his head in disbelief.
You frowned, looking at the floor, “I was going to tell you...but we weren’t really serious.”
“I think having sex is very serious.” He stated.
Your stomach dropped, “excuse me?”
“Yes, I know about that. That boy is honest, I’ll give him that,”
“It’s not true...um we’re not..we didn’t have..it,” you tried.
Suddenly he slapped you, his hand swinging across your face and colliding with your cheek. Bound to leave a bright red mark.
“If I wanted my daughter to be a slut I would have picked up a whore at the strip club,” he spit.
“I’m not your daughter,” you muttered. Trying to step away.
This angered him, you knew you shouldn’t have said that. He grabbed your hips tightly and pulled your frame into his body. Then he gabbed your butt and gripped it hard.
“No one, but me, touches you. Got that, you little bitch?”
You nodded slowly.
“I said! Do you fucking get it?!” He screamed in your face.
“Yes...yes sir,” you responded, every part of you shaking.
He didn’t say a word after that, just let you go, and resumed his business. You ran away up the stairs. Drowning in tears.
“She told me she hates me? Did you know that?” JJ asked John B and Pope.
They were discussing yours and JJ’s fight. They all heard the first part, and were mostly on your side. But they knew you would come around and forgive him. So that’s why they don’t understand why you’d don’t forgive Jj.
“Well did you say something to her? Other than “I’m sorry’ ?” Pope asked, logically.
JJ kicked a rock on the floor.
“Yeah, maybe...” JJ shrugged.
“What did you say?” John B interjected.
JJ frowned, “Just some bullshit about her dad,”
“Dude! Her dad is out of the picture! that’s a low blow, what if some chick started talking shit about your mom?” John B defended.
“No! Not her real dad. Her step dad. He’s living at the house with her,” JJ explained.
“Y/n has a step dad? Holy shit how did I now know that?” Pope paused in disbelief, “What’s wrong with him?” Pope asked.
“He’s just an asshole. I mean, he made it seem like I only date Y/n because we have sex? And when I asked her if he touches her she totally freaked! There’s definitely something going on there,”
John B face palmed, “you told him that you and Y/n had sex? Are you kidding me bro, no dad wants to hear that about their daughter,”
“Yeah and if I was Y/n and you said that I would totally freak. Are you...maybe..just assuming that becuase your dad hits y-“ Pope said but was interrupted by JJ.
“This is not about me! Okay?! Something wrong is going on there and I’m going to find out!” JJ exclaimed, frustrated at his friends.
At this moment, Kie arrived in her car. She hopped out quickly holding beers.
“Brought some refreshments, boys!” She shouted cheerfully. John B and Pope cheered, but JJ was about to leave anyway.
He walked near Kie and was going to use his bike to get to your house.
“Will you stop him, Kie?!” Pope called.
Kie nodded, “JJ where are you going?” Kiara asked him, putting her hand on his shoulder.
“To Y/n’s,” he shrugged.
“Why? She’s not home,” Kiara told him.
JJ paused what he was doing, “what do you mean she’s not home?!”
Kiara was startled, “um..I just saw her at the beach. She waved to me. I tried to invite her over but then she started surfing...so I didn’t. Is something wrong?”
“Surfing?” JJ asked, trailing off.
“Is everything okay?” Kiara repeated.
JJ sighed, “Kie...do you think Y/n could ever hate me?”
“What did you do?”
“I...I fucked up. I gotta go see her,” JJ blurted, then hopped on his bike and headed to the beach. Your favorite part of the outerbanks.
You weren’t catching any more waves. They weren’t big enough for a total wipe out and that’s what you thought you deserved.
You sat on your board, staring off at the boats miles away, wishing you were on one.
JJ saw you, in a black wet suit, just sitting there.
He grabbed the neck of his shirt and pulled it off, then, grabbed his board and started swimming out to you.
“Hey,” he said once he finally reached you.
You turned and saw him, “oh, hey,”
You avoided eye contact. There was something wrong. And JJ knew you would deny anything unless he acted as if he already knew.
“What happened after I left?” JJ said, copying your position on his own board.
You felt that rush of pain through you, the feeling you get when your about to cry, “we had an argument. I’m not suppose to come back until...until I break up with you,” you mentioned, trying to take deep breaths as if that would help contain the tears.
“No. No, no, no. Y/n, hey, can you look at me? Please, baby,” JJ could feel your suffering, and he didn’t know why.
“I’m tired JJ. So tired of it. I’m not good for you,” you croaked out, your voice cracking.
JJ’s heart broke, “yes you are. You’re the best thing I’ve ever had,”
“It has to be over,” you said in monotone, tears rolling down your cheeks in slow motion.
“Why.” JJ swallowed his urge to yell.
You shook your head, then the tears fell right into the ocean, “you were right. And I hate you for it. I hate it.” Your voice was shaking.
“Right about what? Y/n, whatever it is we can talk about it. Your safe with me,”
“I don’t want you to know! Can’t you understand that!?”
JJs eyes remained on you, but he couldn’t bare to see you crying. That’s when he noticed small circular bruises decorating your inner thighs. From the pattern, he could tell they were from fingers. And they wrapped around to your butt.
“He touches you there?” JJ almost whispered, his hand gently resting on your leg.
You tensed under his touch.
You didn’t respond, JJ moved your leg so he could get a better view, there were dozens. And some only beginning to heal.
“How could he do this to you, baby? It’s not right,”
You sniffled a bit, chest rising and falling quickly, “it’s my fault...I ...I did it to myself. These are .. it was an accident,” you mumbled, coming up with excuses still. Even when JJ knew the truth.
“Let’s go to shore, yeah?” JJ suggested.
“No. No. I’m not...I’m leaving J. Say goodbye and let me leave,” you begged.
JJ didn’t know if you were planning on drowning yourself or running away. He wasn’t going to let you leave.
You were falling apart. But JJ knew a little bit about being broken.
He pulled your board closer to him, until you eventually agreed and paddled to shore.
JJ helped you up and immediately pulled you into his chest. You were frozen for a minute, you didn’t hug him back. But then, you finally felt him, and hugged him back.
You were shaking from the cold of the water, JJ wrapped a towel around your back and kept you warm.
“I can’t lose you. I love you, Y/n. Never forget that, please,” JJ whispered.
You didn’t let go of him.
“You hear me?” JJ followed up, “Y/n, baby, I need you to tell me.”
“I...I love you too...” you sniffled.
JJs held your head in his hand. Shushing you, telling you everything is going to be okay.
Part 2
🤍 thankyou so much for reading! I am so greatful for 900 followers! hope you liked seeing JJ in this light, it was difficult to write on my part. 🤍

Adoption Papers
Rating: Gen, General Audiences
Part 2 of Camila is Hunter’s Mom Now
Camila officially adopts Hunter and Vee
Might be a little hard to explain where they came from, though.
Direct Sequel to “Another Shot at Life”
Ao3
“What’s a social security?”
“What do you mean an ID?”
“Why do we have to do a bunch of paperwork to live here? Luz just lived in Eda’s house for months!”
Camila pinched the bridge of her nose. “Things work differently here than in the Boiling Isles. And if the two of you don’t want me to get arrested for kidnapping, we have to fill out paperwork, and I have to officially adopt you.”
Vee sniffed the papers. “But I’ve already been living here!”
“Yeah, pretending to be me,” Luz reminded her, “Gonna be a liiiiiitle hard to explain why there’s two of us.”
Hunter squinted at the documents. “I used to do paperwork for the coven. But I have no idea what any of this says.” It was all a lot of technical stuff—with a lot of words he didn’t know the meaning of.
Camila sighed. “I’ve filled out most of it, but… we’re going to need to explain where the two of you came from. And ‘wandered in from another dimension’ isn’t something I think we can tell people.”
Luz bounced up. “Ooo! I’ve got it!” She waved a hand. “Vee is my twin sister, separated at birth!”
“Luz, sweetie, the hospital records will say otherwise.”
“Okay, okay, how abooooout… we say that Vee was a home birth, maybe a year younger than me, but Dad took her away with him when he left, and we assumed he’d do all of the registry, but apparently he didn’t? What are they going to do, track him down and ask him? They haven’t managed that yet. We can say that Vee ran away and came home to us.”
“That might work. What about Hunter?”
Luz grinned at him. “We found him living feral in the woods, he was raised by a pack of wolves.”
Hunter stuck his tongue out at her.
“Yeaaah… I don’t think that one’s gonna fly.”
“How about we tell them the truth?” Vee asked, “We say he ran away from a bad situation, and we’ve been taking care of him.”
“What if they start investigating? They’ll ask him questions, definitely, and if they try to figure out who his family is-!”
Luz jumped up and down. “Oooooo, tell them your horrible family chased you, and tried to push you off of a cliff, but they slipped and fell off and died!”
Hunter felt sick. “Pass.”
“Let’s stick to something simple. You and your… uncle… traveled, didn’t have a home, and you slipped away one day. You were camping out in the old abandoned house to hide, Vee found you there and brought you home, and you’ve been living with us ever since.”
“What if they try to figure out who his family is?” Vee asked, “I mean, uncle sounds a lot like he might have just kidnapped him.”
Hunter shrugged. “I’ll tell them my whole family was already dead. Freak boating accident, bodies never found. They were recluses, no one noticed they were missing. I’ll say uhhhhhhhh, I don’t remember their names, because I was a kid, and my uncle never told me our last name.”
Luz squinted at him. “What is your last name?”
“No idea.”
Camila sighed. “This is getting complicated. What if they start trying to figure out where your family lived?”
“Mexico,” Luz said immediately, “But Hunter was born over the border.”
“Does he look Mexican to you?”
“Okay, fine, Canada, whatever!”
“Let’s just… keep it simple, okay, Luz? Hunter, what do you think? This is your story, you have to be able to tell it.”
His story. Okay, who did he want to be? “I think… I think Vee’s idea is good,” he said slowly, “Ran away—I’ll just say he was my uncle. And we were homeless, so there’s nowhere they could track him down to. Even if they DO start looking for my birth family, it’s not like they can actually pull anything up, because I’m not from here. Okay. So, I ran away, made my way to Gravesfield, camped out in the abandoned house for a bit, then Vee found me, uhhhhh…”
“A week ago,” Vee offered.
“Okay, yeah, a week ago.”
“And if they ask for details about your uncle?”
“I’ll just talk about Belos. It’s not like they can find him.”
Camila nodded. “Okay! The closest adoption agency is out of town, but I already scheduled an appointment for tomorrow. First hurdle, guys!”
“First?” Hunter echoed.
“Oh, yeah, we have to get the two of you enrolled in school—”
“School?!”
Luz laughed. “Ohhhhhhh, you’re gonna hate it, Mr. Prodigy.”
“I don’t need school!”
“Yeah? Do you know how to do algebra? How about chemistry? Physics?”
“No?” Hunter looked to Luz. “Those are fake, right?”
She shook her head. “Unfortunately, they’re all very real.”
“I don’t need those.”
“We’ll discuss it later,” Camila interrupted, “For now, let’s just… focus on the adoption, okay?”
She looked… nervous. Which made Hunter nervous.
“What… what happens if they don’t believe me?”
Camila rubbed the back of her head. “I… I don’t know, mijo. If they dig deeper, I… but it will be fine.”
Still, Hunter didn’t sleep that night, his mind running through every possible way that this could go wrong. The next morning, when they loaded up in the car, he could see dark circles under Camila’s eyes, too. It did not make him feel better.
Hunter tossed his palisman gently out the window before they set off, the bird fluttering around his head. “You can’t come with us. Stay here and protect the house, okay?”
The bird chirped in affirmation, flapping back to sit on the roof.
Vee fell back asleep, leaning against him, and he resisted the urge to shake her awake and demand to know how she could possibly not be worried about this.
Hunter hadn’t ever gone outside of Gravesfield, and it was hitting him just now how… huge… the human realm was. He watched countryside flash by outside the car window, and even still, they didn’t seem to be getting anywhere.
And then buildings loomed in front of him, huge and imposing. Hunter pressed his face against the window. “Is this the capital of the human realm?”
“Ha. No. We’re not even in the capital of Connecticut.”
“Seriously?!”
Hunter watched the streets go by. This world was enormous, and he wasn’t entirely sure how to feel about it.
They had the key on this side, and since he was here, Belos was down one coven head—hypothetically, his uncle couldn’t complete his day of unity plans. But if he did, or if he managed to get back through, somehow…
Hunter was almost confident that this world was big enough for him to hide in.
They pulled up to an office building, and Camila took a deep breath. “Okay. Here goes nothing. Come on, kids.”
They all followed behind her into the building, and Camila approached the desk. “Hiiii. I’m Camila Noceda, I have an appointment about a couple of adoptions?”
The desk attendant glanced behind her at the three of them. “Down the hall, first door on the right. Right on time.”
Camila gave the attendant a nod. Hunter and Vee both crowded close to her as they filed into the office. “Hello?”
The woman at the desk looked like she hadn’t slept in a week, a thermos on a table covered in papers. “Hey. Paperwork.”
Camila tentatively handed her the packet, and she disappeared into a back room, coming back out after about ten minutes.
“So, neither of these kids is in the system?”
Camila shook her head. “Neither.”
The woman squinted at Vee. “Certainly looks like your other daughter. Why didn’t you report her father taking her?”
“We… we were separating. We thought he’d already filed everything.”
A grunt. “Alright. You. Other one. Hunter. C’mere.”
Hunter looked to Camila, and she gave him a little nod. He followed the woman into the other room, where she read over his form again. “Tell me about your uncle.”
“What? Why?”
“We need to see if we can find him.”
Hunter’s blood chilled. “I’m not going back!”
“Hey, it’s okay. We need to find him because we just don’t know enough about you—not even your last name. So we need your uncle for more information.”
“You won’t find him.”
“Uh-huh. Let us try, at least. Physical description?”
Hunter sighed. “Tall. Blond but greying, long hair, blue eyes. Old.” Face creeping with slime, occasionally turns into a puddle of goop, can’t miss him.
“His name?”
“Belos.”
“There’s one you don’t hear every day. Last name?”
“Dunno.”
“Right. Of course not. Where was the last place you saw him?”
“I don’t know.”
The woman sighed. “You’ve got to work with me, here.”
“Why?”
“Because this whole adoption will go a lot more smoothly. Where was the last place you saw him?”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay. Fine. How long ago did you see him?”
Hunter struggled to remember. Kind of hard to tell when he didn’t know how much time he’d lost falling down into a cursed prison of darkness.
But according to Luz, that had only been for a couple of hours, even if it had felt like forever.
“Two weeks,” he said softly.
Two weeks since he’d been rescued. Two weeks since the worst time of his life.
“And you… ran away?”
“Yeah.”
“Can you explain why?”
Hunter shuddered. “Because I was miserable.”
“Specifically?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“We can’t take you away from your uncle if he wasn’t a bad parent, Hunter. If we don’t have any indication he did anything wrong, then he can reclaim you any time he likes, and we are obligated to try to find him and return you to him. I understand that it may be painful to talk about it, but we cannot proceed without information about your past life.”
“Fine,” Hunter snapped, “He hurt me, and he locked me up, and he made me run errands for him and would punish me if I failed, happy?”
A slight pause. “What kind of errands?”
Hunting down palisman so he could drain them of their magic. “Uh… picking up medicine for him.”
“Medicine? What kind?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“I just picked it up. I didn’t ask questions, it wasn’t encouraged.”
“But you ran away, ended up in Gravesfield, where Camila found you a week ago?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay. Wait outside, send Camila in.”
Hunter shuffled out. “She wants you.”
Camila nodded, disappearing into the other room, closing the door behind her. Vee nudged him. “Are you okay?”
“She was asking about Belos.”
“I’m sorry,” Luz said softly.
Hunter paced back and forth. “What do you think they’re talking about?” He crept closer to the door, pressing his ear to the door.
“Hunter,” Vee hissed, “Get away from there, it’s rude!”
“I want to know what they’re saying,” he hissed back, “Shhhh!”
He pressed his ear to the door again. The voices were faint, but he could make out what they were saying.
“Obviously, if Vee is your biological daughter, there isn’t any reason for us to keep her from you. I don’t think there will be any difficulty with the transition. But Hunter… Ms. Noceda, you may be rushing into more than you can handle.”
“What do you mean?”
“You don’t know him well. We don’t know where he came from, or what he’s done.”
“What he’s done?”
“He’s a liar, ma’am, you wrote that he was homeless, but he claimed his uncle would lock him up. Those two aren’t exactly compatible. He very obviously isn’t telling us everything—and I suspect he may have been part of a drug delivery system without knowledge. If I can believe him that he didn’t know what his uncle’s ‘medicine’ was.”
“Okay, well, let’s just say that I am really, really, really determined to adopt him anyway.”
“I’m really advising you not to. Let us get him into the system, foster him out, see how he does before you go all in on adopting him. He might not even be separated from his uncle—they might be planning to rob or hurt you and your family.”
“Hunter,” Camila thundered, “is not going to hurt us. And I don’t think it’s a good idea to foster him out.”
Hunter pulled back from the door, feeling sick. “Luz, what’s fostering?”
Her face paled. “It’s… it’s when they sort of send you out to different families to take care of you.”
“I don’t want to go to a different family!”
“You won’t,” Luz soothed, “Mom won’t let them take you away. And you can just run away if they do.”
Hunter started to pace, his chest getting tight. “I can’t start running away here, too! That’ll just make all of the adoption stuff harder, right?”
Vee grabbed his hand. “Hunter. Look at me.”
He did, the fingers of his free hand tapping restlessly on the side of his leg.
Vee gave his hand a squeeze. “It’s going to be okay,” she said firmly, “We aren’t going to leave you behind. Promise.”
He took a deep breath. “Okay.”
“Good. Now sit down, and just think about other stuff. Like school.”
“I don’t want to go to school.”
“I’ll teach you algebra,” Vee promised, “They had a whole course on it at summer camp—it’s not so bad. And I’ll introduce you to my friends, too. You’ll be a couple grades older than us, but that’s okay.”
Luz bounced up. “Speaking of school, Hunter, is there any chance I can borrow Red? I know we’re worried about using the portal, but Eda and Amity and King and Gus and Willow will all be so worried about me!”
“Use your little…” Hunter clicked his fingers in the air. “Your little yellow thing.”
“My—you think that will work between dimensions?”
He shrugged. “Worth a shot. Might as well try before we open the portal and risk Belos getting in.” Hunter tapped his fingers against the chair. “If there’s natural titan’s blood veins in the Boiling Isles, then there’s a place here where it connects, right?”
“Right. That’s how Phillip—he wrote the diary I was using to figure out my portal—got into the demon realm in the first place.”
“So we might not need the key portal if we can find a place on this side where the worlds intersect.” Hunter’s stomach roiled. “Except that if we can do that, that means Belos has another way to get blood.”
“If I can just get in contact with Eda, she might be able to figure out my portal and then we don’t have to—”
The door to the other room burst open. Camila grinned, her hands behind her back. “Okay, Vee, Hunter, close your eyes, and hold out your hands!”
Vee did what she said, and Hunter followed suit, a little more hesitantly. Something paper settled in his hand. “Okay, open your eyes now.”
Hunter blinked at the paper in his hand.
Hunter Noceda.
Vee bounced up and down. “We did it!”
“They’re still finalizing everything—social security, birth certificates, all of that will take a bit more time. But you two are legally part of the family and under my care, now!”
Hunter Noceda.
The words felt… odd, in his head. But a good kind of odd.
Luz slung her arms around Vee and Hunter’s necks. “Whoo! Two new siblings! I didn’t use to have… well, any! I mean, I had you, but legally!” She shook Hunter slightly. “See? Nothing to worry about, I told you Mom could handle it!”
“Hunter Noceda.” He had a last name, now. A family name. “Vee Noceda.” It felt more natural to say her name—but then, she’d already seemed to be part of the family.
Luz cackled with glee. “Aha! You know what that means? Now the two of you have to wear ugly sweaters for family Christmas card pictures!”
“Ugly sweaters?” Vee questioned
“Christ-mas?” Hunter echoed.
“Ehehehe. Welcome to the Noceda family. You two have a lot of family tradition to catch up on.”

PREVIOUSLY ON RELIC KEEL
Dorcas meets up with Marlene at Marlene’s house and Luke is there—we figure out Marlene and Luke are cousins. Luke, as it turns out, has a neglecting mother (as well as a father who has been taken to jail, Marlene’s father doesn’t want her dating Dorcas because she’s from Salazar, and Marlene still hasn’t told Dorcas that she got into college.
Saint goes to wait for Logan at The Carrows in Salazar, where he restocks his Crucio supply.
Lily and James are painting one of the Potter’s old boats together. Lily is confused and frustrated—and in love with James. James, already hurt and trying not to cause himself further harm but also not wanting to lose Lily entirely, lets Lily kiss him but ends it there. They’re both nervous about college.
Instead of Logan, Saint runs into Luke first, who, as a last resort, is going to the Carrows for Crucio. Luke seems to have some surprises up his sleeve—a love for books that Saint shares, perhaps. When Saint does spot Logan, he makes Luke get into his car so as to not alarm him, and steals his dad’s gold watch in the process.
When Saint goes to fetch Logan, they run into Amycus Carrow, who tells Saint that Logan owes them for using their stash of Crucio without paying—but they won’t tell Saint or Logan how much Logan owes.
As a result, Logan gets it into his head that he can pay off his debt if he finds the treasure of The Voldemort, the one that Leo’s dad died looking for. Logan tries to get Saint to help by asking what he wants most, and when that doesn’t work, asking what he hates. Perhaps Saint is one for revenge, rather than need.
Sirius and Dorcas finally get Saint talking about Logan and his time at Saint Clair. Saint reveals that there were harsh punishments for bad behavior in Saint Clair. He also reveals that, for reasons he can only guess at, when kids turn 18, the age at which they could leave the orphanage, they decide to stay. Saint believes Crucio has something to do with it. He has memories of being extremely tired at night, and having vivid dreams—he doesn’t say what these dreams were about. Saint believes that many of the kids, if they arrived young enough, don’t know how to tell the difference between a Crucio-filled mind and a Crucio-free one. The scene ends with them receiving an invitation to a party at James’ house.
Logan finds Leo at his family’s workshop and says he wants to help him find The Voldemort. Leo wants to finish his father’s work, Logan needs the money—Saint shows up, seeming to have found his motivation, too, whatever it may be.
***CW: mentions of taking drugs and being drugged, brief mentions of blood, brief mention of death of a father***
part vi
In his dream, Finn was in a house. There was a woman sitting at the table, a man at the stove, and a boy leaning against the counter. Everything was murky at the edges, even their laughter.
Finn knew what family was. He’d read about it. He’d thought about it. With Logan, he’d felt it.
What he didn’t know, what he could never be sure of, was whether he’d seen it. What it looked like. What his looked like. Every time he thought he did…he’d wake up.
They had begun as pills—vitamins. But pills could be kept on the tongue.
Powder couldn’t be kept from food.
Finn, sweetheart, the woman said in his dream. How was school today? Is Logan still coming over for dinner?
Your boyfriend, the other boy teased, smiling. The man turned from the stove and laughed, reaching over to tussle Finn’s hair.
Yeah, Finn heard himself say. He is.
He looked at the woman—his mother, maybe—and she looked different than she had a moment ago.
We can play pick up, the brother said—but he wasn’t anymore. There was a sister, and now a brother again, now two brothers. And then his mother was at the stove and his father coming in from the yard, and then there was a younger sister sitting on his lap, and then he was the younger brother and his dad was coming home from work, briefcase in hand, closing the front door, giving his mother a kiss—
Finn woke up. His throat was dry and his eyes were, too. He used to wake up crying when he was younger. And Logan had been there, both of them not understanding.
Finn didn’t know if Logan understood now. Finn hadn’t figured it out until after he’d gotten Logan out, not entirely. Not about the Felix. Just about the kids that weren’t leaving. Something was keeping them here, and all he had wanted was to protect Logan and himself from that. Now that he knew that it was Felix that kept them here…Finn couldn’t see why they wanted it so bad. He didn’t want these false glimpses of family. He didn’t want Felix. He wanted Logan. Logan was real. His only comfort was that Logan was free of it. Of this place.
Finn blinked slowly up at the walls of the solitary room. His eyes were heavy. His head, his limbs. He hadn’t eaten anything in almost a week now.
And the dreams still came.
Maybe it wasn’t anything but his own head that was doing the imagining now.
He knew what was real, and this wasn’t it.
~
Luke looked across the deck at his mother in her lounge chair and pinched the Felix, within a small plastic bag within his pocket, to make it sift back and forth. A sound only he could hear. That, and the ice cubes in his mother’s whiskey. The sun was hot on his bare chest, drying the water droplets left from the pool quickly. He couldn’t stop rubbing the place where his father’s watch had been. Just thinking about it, about Saint and his quick fingers, made him snarl.
His mother’s ice cubes rattled.
“I want to start going through your father’s things,” she said airily from beneath her floppy sun hat. “There’s just so much of it. His papers, and all those fat books he has. God, that stupid treasure obsession.”
“It wasn’t stupid,” Luke replied as evenly as he could. “And he’s not dead. He’s coming back.”
His mother laughed. “Oh, sweetheart.”
She had cut her hair very short after Luke’s dad had been taken away. Luke couldn’t get the images out of his mind. Her, walking back through the door the next day, with her long blonde hair cut to her chin, curling just beneath her jaw. She had smiled at him and given her head a shake. Like it, mon lumière?
My light, she called him. When he was little she’d kissed him goodnight with that nickname every day, turning on the small nightlight that he kept—he still kept it. He’d tried not to, but every time, every night, the dark was just too dark. He was almost mad at her for giving it to him in the first place. If he had just gotten used to the dark…maybe he would be more prepared now.
Since his father, she’d been moving about the house like nothing had changed. Or, rather, like something had changed, and she was all the better for it.
His father’s leather chairs were gone from the living room, replaced by two baby blue couches that made Luke sick to look at. The pirate ship wheel was gone from the wall, too.
Luke didn’t know this mother.
Not even the island knew this woman. They knew the bake-sale-bringing, strict-rule-making, no-nonsense-grounding mother that Luke had known his entire life. He’d spent so many nights furious in his room after she’d caught him sneaking out or drinking.
And now, here his mother was, offering him a glass of whiskey at eleven in the morning.
Luke pinched the Felix between his fingers more harshly.
“No, thanks,” he said, and squinted back out towards the ocean.
“If you’re sure,” his mother said. “Well, I just said so because I’m tired of looking at it all.”
“Don’t get rid of it,” Luke said, trying to keep the pleading out of his voice. “I like his office. Mom, it reminds me of him.”
Luke had spent hours in there, laughing with his father, talking about history and literature, sneaking the rare puff on his cigar.
Then, they had taken him away, and his mother had gotten a hair cut, and suddenly Luke didn’t know anything anymore.
“Excuse me,” Luke mumbled, and left his mother in the sun with her drink and the pills that were no doubt already within. She was getting high more than he ever had now.
Luke could barely see anything inside the house after the bright day outside, but he didn’t need to see. He could have found his father’s study, and everything in it, blind.
He was still damp when he sunk down shakily into his father’s desk chair, the plush leather smelling of cigars, and took the bag of pinkish powder out of his pocket.
Just to see him again.
Just for something else to have happened.
Just not this.
~
Remus met Sirius in James’ kitchen again. The large glass doors were flung wide, opening out onto the porch and the pool beyond where a projector and screen were set up, along with chairs and blankets. Lily had set out the floating lanterns that the Potters put in the pool during their dinner parties and they floated idly back and forth in the evening breeze, giving out a soft yellow glow to mix with the dusky blue that came in from the ocean. The palm trees leaned over the house’s surrounding gate, swaying.
The counter between Remus and Sirius was covered in food. Pizza and nachos from Thomas’ family’s restaurant, chocolate chip cookies, chips and salsa, sodas and liquor.
“If you’re gonna do it, do it in the house,” Mrs. Potter always said.
Sirius looked the same, but fresh out of the ocean. His dark hair was damp, dripping onto the collar of his faded t-shirt. He looked like the ocean had the same effect on him as it did on Remus. Sirius’ eyes looked brighter. His shoulders looked more relaxed. He looked up from where he was pouring some whiskey into a cup and even managed an easier smile than usual.
“Hey,” Remus said, taking a paper plate from the stack. “How’s it going?”
Sirius’ eyes found his, then he looked down, stoppering the bottle. “Pretty good, you?”
“Pretty good,” Remus said, and then took a breath before testing the waters. “Had a nice sail this morning, clocked a shift at the museum, can’t complain.”
Sirius glanced up quickly, and Remus suppressed a smile as he loaded his plate.
“Oh,” Sirius began. “I mean, yeah, I saw.”
“You like sailing?”
Sirius nodded. “Kris lets me take one of his out sometimes.”
“Kris?” Remus questioned.
“Oh,” Sirius cleared his throat. Remus watched some of those ocean washed walls begin to go back up. “Yeah, he runs the boat rental shop over in Rowena. I guess you wouldn’t know given that you have…you know.”
Remus tried to side-step the awkward shift. Sirius seemed to have ideas about him already. Remus wished he had some clue about Sirius, beside his ocean-eyes and guarded expression.
“Well, that’s cool of him,” Remus said.
Sirius nodding from over the brim of his cup. “Yeah, it is.”
“Hey, well—” Remus shrugged. “I mean, I’m sure you do it on your own all the time but…you know if you ever wanted to…”
Sirius raised an eyebrow. Remus hadn’t finished his sentence.
“I mean, if you ever wanted to,” Remus began again, and was suddenly nervous. Sirius didn’t even like him. It looked as though he didn’t like Gods in general. He’d probably think this was charity. He’d probably hate Remus for offering. “Go out.”
Sirius’ eyebrow raised further.
“On my boat,” Remus said, all in a rush. His cheeks were hot. “Go sailing on—my boat.”
Remus didn’t know what he was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t for Sirius to do nothing at all. He stood there, frozen and off guard.
“Only if you want,” Remus said hopelessly. “I get up pretty early.”
“So do I,” Sirius said, and there was the slap of flip flops from behind Remus.
“Look who I found at the kid’s table,” Saint’s voice came, and he leaned on the counter beside Remus in his tank-top and shorts, taking a nacho off of his plate. “Hello, Remus Lupin. You’re looking flushed. Sirius, are you making him blush?”
“Um,” Sirius said.
Remus just shook his head and reached for a soda. He felt idiotic, and now more so, after being interrupted. He could hear the others talking and laughing over the movie and wished he was over there—wished he hadn’t tried to hit on Sirius Black, of all people. He didn’t know if Sirius liked men. He didn't even know Sirius.
“Re, Saint, Black, someone bring me back a drink!” Marlene’s voice came over the chatter. She was tangled with Dorcas on one of the blankets, leaning back into her chest.
“Why do you look like you’ve done something?” Sirius said, drawing Remus’ eyes back to him.
“Well, I haven’t yet,” Saint replied. “But just watch.” He leaned closer to Remus. “Fruit-Loop, I need you to get me into that museum of yours.”
Remus looked at him warily. “How do you know I work at the museum…”
“A friend,” Saint said.
Remus looked at the hand Saint was resting his chin on. He was fairly sure that was Luke’s father’s watch.
“Get you in?” he asked. “Why not just go?”
Saint looked at him like he was entirely put upon, like he couldn’t believe Remus hadn’t caught on yet. “Because I don’t think what I’m looking for is on the floor, as they say.”
“Saint,” Sirius said incredulously. “What…what?”
“Can you help?” Saint looked at Remus. “You know, I could just take it.”
“Let you take something from the museum?” Remus laughed. “No.”
“Fine,” Saint sighed and pushed up from the counter, taking Remus’ plate from him and beginning to walk away. “I was just giving you the option to make this a little easier.”
Remus stared after him, then looked at Sirius, who shook his head before Remus could even ask.
“No idea,” Sirius said.
~
Saint didn’t actually know that many movies.
The movie theater was fine, but old. Grimmauld didn’t have a TV. It definitely didn’t have a large projector screen and James’ laptop. There was dancing on the screen. The actors were some place warm. He didn’t recognize it.
Books, on the other hand. Books, he knew.
He spied Luke resting on his forearms, long legs stretched in front of him on a blanket near that back of their group, and smiled.
“Deveaux,” Saint said as he sat down, placing the plate between them. “Pleasure to see you again.”
Luke rolled his eyes. “Oh Jesus, who invited you.”
“The peace keeper named James Potter,” Saint replied. “Not sure what sort of peace he thinks there is to keep. I, for one, think he’s made it all up in his head.”
Luke grabbed Saint’s wrist, the gold of his watch beneath his rough palm.
“This is mine,” Luke said. “You little thief.”
“Is it?”
“Saint,” Luke’s eyes were dark in the dying light and flickering screen. “Give it back to me.”
“What will you give me?” Saint asked, and leaned in.
Luke snarled and let go. “I’m not bargaining for my watch. You stole it.”
“I steal a lot of things. Your mother has good taste, by the way. So does Mrs. Potter. Unlike some of these God mothers. Do you think they know their husbands buy them the fake stuff, and save the goods for their mistresses?”
“Fuck off.”
Saint broke part of a cookie off. “Those are your two favorite words.”
Luke just shook his head, his jaw tight and angry, eyes remaining on the screen. Saint chewed slowly.
“What’s this?” Saint asked, jerking his chin towards the screen.
He felt Luke look at him. “You don’t know?”
“I just asked, didn’t I?”
“What?” Luke scoffed. “It’s Mamma Mia. You’ve never seen this movie? Where the fuck have you been?”
Saint looked at him steadily.
“Right,” Luke nodded. “Fucked childhood, and all that.”
“That’s one way to look at it, thank you, tweedle.”
“What else haven’t you seen?”
Saint flicked the hand with the watch on it. “How the fuck should I know?”
Luke’s eyes followed the gold for a moment, and then he looked back out towards the others. Saint did, too, laughing softly. He could practically feel Luke trying to decide how to get the watch from his wrist.
“Irish wrist watch,” Saint whispered. “Irish wrist watch, Irish wrist watch…”
James was sitting with Lily. Marlene and Dorcas were to the side, dancing along to the music with Thomas. Sirius and Remus had followed him out of the house and were, to Saint’s surprise, sitting awkwardly beside each other. Sirius seemed to be asking about the movie, too, and Remus explaining it to him.
Fucking Gods, Saint thought as he looked around at the glowing pool, the mountain of food in the kitchen. Fucking Gods and all their careless lives.
He wondered if maybe he should have brought Leo along, if his sob story about his dad might have gotten Remus to help.
Remus works at the museum, Leo had said. Me and Logan heard him say, him and Layla—her family owns it. If there’s any chance of seeing another copy of that map, it’s the History Museum.
“I’ve never seen you be quiet for this long,” Luke’s voice interrupted.
“You’re the one who ruined it.”
Luke reached between them for the plate and plucked up the other half of Saint’s cookie. “I was just saying.”
“I’ve never seen you not glower for this long—oh, there it is.”
“Give me my watch back.”
“For what?”
Luke paused, then said, “Books.”
That made Saint look at him. Luke’s eyes were on Saint’s wrist, but Saint remembered him in the car, reading James’ copy of Shelley. Saint felt stormy again, a familiar building in his chest that always simmered.
“Excuse me?”
“Give me my watch and I’ll give you—”
“So, you are bargaining.”
“You seem to like hand-outs,” Luke bit back. “You take books from James, don’t you? Not to mention this,” Luke shifted towards Saint. “You take a lot of things from people you claim to hate.”
“Ouch,” Saint said, and it really had hurt. Waste of space. He smiled.
“I can do you better,” Luke said. “Tell me what you want.”
“You mean your daddy could?”
Luke’s expression went cold all over. Lightning, over the strike of green in his right eye, nestled among the deep brown. “What’s his is mine now.”
Saint wondered if Luke had Crucio in his system right now. He didn’t have the tired look of it. Come to think of it, Luke never had that look, not like Logan did. He must take it at night, Saint thought. To sleep, maybe. Some people used it like that. Some people thought it let them control their dreams.
Saint didn’t think anyone could control their dreams, their wants and wishes—waking or asleep. Even if they wanted to.
“Was this his, too?” Saint looked at the watch face.
“God, just—” Luke broke off, shoulders tense, and rubbed his eyes. “What the fuck do you want? Money? Just tell me and give it back.”
Saint checked the time, then looked back at Luke.
“One-thirty. My bedtime. And I don’t need shit from you,” Saint said breezily, and patted Luke’s thigh before pushing himself up from the blanket.
“Saint,” he heard Sirius say faintly, but nothing from Luke, and he kept walking through the Potter’s house.
~
Sirius was almost angry at Saint. Or, maybe, he was angry at himself for wanting to stay at the Potters. He knew why he had been invited, why James had wrapped an arm around him, told him to help himself to the food, why Remus had talked to him, sat beside him, offered…well, he wasn’t sure what Remus had offered.
Pity.
At least, he thought he knew.
Though talking to Remus had felt far from pity. Remus laughed with his eyes squeezed shut, and it had taken Sirius off guard each and every time. He was angry at Remus Lupin. He was angry at him for his words when they were eleven.
Are you okay? Sirius, right?
As if he didn’t know Sirius’ name, and of course Sirius wasn’t okay.
But now Remus Lupin was talking about his boat, and this movie, whatever it was, that Sirius had never seen, and smiling at him as though he’d done nothing wrong.
Or, at least he had been, before Sirius had followed a blank-faced Saint out of the house.
“What are you doing?” Sirius asked Saint’s retreating back as they jogged down the steps to the driveway.
Saint had merely held up something that jingled over his shoulder. The car keys glinted as much as the watch on his wrist which Sirius knew wasn’t his own.
“Taking Luke’s car.”
“Saint, come on,” Sirius sighed. “I mean—that looked pretty fucking civil. Non?”
Saint turned on him. “Oh, yes, and you could hear every word? Non.” Saint kicked one of the tires. “Fuck the Gods, and fuck their shiny cars, too.”
Sirius shook his head. “What’s this—museum stuff? What’s going on? Saint, just talk to me—”
“You took Lupin’s side,” Saint breezed as he chirped Luke’s car. “You don’t get to know.”
That stopped Sirius in his tracks. He took a step back. “Since when do we do that?”
Saint slammed the door, sitting in the driver seat.
“Not tell each other things?” Sirius pushed forward. “Since when?”
Sirius watched him through the rolled down window as he ran his hands over the dark leather of the seats, the shiny black of the dash.
“There’s a lot you don’t know,” Saint said softly. “There’s a lot I don’t know.”
“What do you want from the museum?” Sirius tried again. “Is this about…Saint Clair? Logan? Ever since he showed up—”
“Orphan!” came from the house just moments before the front door blew open. Luke zeroed in on Saint behind the wheel instantly, sandy hair casting shadows over his forehead and eyes. “What the fuck is up with you and taking my shit?”
“See you at home, sweetheart,” Saint said to Sirius, and started the car. Luke brushed past Sirius and tugged fruitlessly on the locked door.
“Hey,” Luke only just managed to bang on the back window as Saint screeched out of the Potter’s drive. “Saint!”
Sirius watched as Luke stood there in the humid night, watching his own taillights disappear. He cursed again, running a hand through his hair, and then turned.
Luke looked at Sirius. They stayed a few feet apart in the driveway.
“Do you know where he’s going?” Luke asked, breathing heavily.
Sirius did not like Luke Deveaux.
“No,” he said, and turned back into the house to find Remus.
~
Leo looked over at Logan. They were sitting on the curb outside The Lion, waiting for word from Saint, and Logan was quiet. Not that Logan wasn’t usually quiet, but this felt different. He was picking at an old scab on his knee, taking his hat off and putting it back on again.
“Are you okay?” Leo asked, and Logan didn’t look up when he nodded.
“Is it,” Leo hesitated. “Finn?”
That snapped Logan’s head up. “How did you…”
“You said his name to me,” Leo said softly. “The first night we met. You were…” but Leo didn’t really know the word. High? Hallucinating?
“I know what I was,” Logan sighed.
“Do you want to talk about him?” Leo asked. “I mean, you don’t have to I just…I know it helps to talk about my dad sometimes.”
“Finn isn’t dead,” Logan said harshly. He took his hat off, pushing his hair back, and put it back on again.
“I know,” Leo said. “I know, I just meant—never mind.”
Leo, in a way that Logan would probably hate him for, was dying to know more about Saint Clair. Saint had been around long enough that Leo sometimes lost track of the fact that he’d escaped. Others were around the island, doing work and looking normal enough that Leo could forget about them, too.
But he couldn’t forget Logan. Logan, who was tortured and rough and missing someone in a way that Leo could feel, that Leo could recognize.
Beautiful, with his green eyes and rare smiles, that Leo knew he should steer well away from. Because Finn. Finn sounded like—
“He’s my—” Logan began, then shook his head. “I don’t know what to say. Boyfriend sounds—small.” Logan shifted, looking at Leo. “He’s all I have. He’s all I’ve had for a long time. Since I can remember. My entire life.” Logan ran a hand over his face, and when it came away, he looked exhausted. “I’m just repeating myself, but do you get it?”
“Yes,” Leo said. “I get it.”
“And now he’s—and I’m out here, and…”
“And you want to get him out, too,” Leo finished for him. Logan looked stricken.
“He got me out,” he said softly. “When it came down to it, he chose me. But I didn’t have time to choose him. It was all over so fast.”
Leo rubbed the colorful bracelet on his wrist. Boyfriend. “And when you say you’re looking for him…Waiting for him…”
“I know where he is,” Logan said. “And the waiting part was a lie. I’d be stupid to wait. I need to get him. He—“ Logan swallowed. “There’s a courtyard. Where I can usually see him. But he hasn’t been there.”
Leo watched Logan’s throat bob again. He was picking at his nail beds, at the scab. Leo lay his palm over his restless fingers, and Logan looked up, eyes bright.
“He needs my help.”
“Okay,” Leo nodded. “Okay.”
“Lovers on the wharf,” came a voice, accompanied by thumping music. Saint pulled up in a sleek looking car—that definitely wasn’t his own. He leaned out the window, grinning. “Deveaux has terrible taste in music.”
“You stole this car,” Leo said dryly. “Didn’t you.”
“Yes I did, Knut. Yes, I did.”
“Let's go,” Logan said. He sniffed and picked up his backpack.
“Who’s got shot gun?” Saint asked.
~
Remus stopped in front of the gallery heading that read Madness On Hogwarts.
He hadn’t asked his mother about it yet. He wasn’t even sure how to ask. But, there it was. The name Lupin was there. He didn’t have to look far. It was there, telling about the slow demise of the mind.
Part of Remus had always wondered when his own would begin.
Another part of him felt like it already had.
He was, after all, standing beside Sirius Black on the dark museum floor, looking for a rogue orphan from Saint Clair.
“It seems pretty quiet, to me,” Remus said. “You really think he came here tonight?”
“He stole Luke’s car, didn’t he?”
Remus snorted. “Yeah, but…”
“So, that’s very get-away-ish of him. I mean he blamed it on hating Gods but—“
Sirius cut off, swallowing, realizing what he said.
“It’s okay,” Remus said and smiled a little. “I…it’s okay.”
Sirius cleared his throat. “It’s just that ours doesn’t always start up.”
Remus’ tried to ease the tension. “Get-away-ish?”
Sirius just shrugged and ducked his head, but Remus thought he was maybe smiling, too.
“Why didn’t you tell James where we were going?” Sirius asked instead, shining his flashlight over a model of a great merchant ship, its sails molded to seem like they were filled with wind. Remus could practically feel it.
It was Remus’ turn to duck as they walked around the exhibits, listening. “James Potter and sneaking anywhere? I don’t know about that.”
Sirius did laugh this time, and he looked almost surprised with it. “I guess you’re right.”
“Besides, he and Lily looked cozy.”
Sirius nodded. “Yeah, that’s been almost happening ever since I can remember.”
“Right,” Remus laughed. For a moment it felt like they did know each other. As though they had been going to school together since they were little. As though Sirius hadn’t left school one day and never returned.
“Can I…ask you something?” Remus said hesitantly.
Sirius made a non-committal sound, and Remus figured that was as good as he was going to get.
“When you left school,” Remus began, then hesitated. “Well, I guess I mean, how? Didn’t your parents…or the police, even…”
“My parents don’t want a son like me,” Sirius replied easily. “As far as the law goes…I’ve never been bothered. I assumed they told the Academy I was being homeschooled. When I say someone like me, I guess I mean they don't want anything to ruin their reputation.” Sirius sighed. “Whatever that may be. Otherwise, I don’t know.”
“But you weren’t homeschooled,” Remus said. “You’re in The Hollow?”
Sirius’ smile was a little challenging. “Surfing every morning. Hanging out with my friends every night. I get work where I can, but I don’t need much.”
Remus nodded. “I guess that doesn’t sound too bad. I guess you’re not going to college, then.”
“That stuff isn’t for everyone,” Sirius replied.
“Oh,” Remus began. “No, I wasn’t, like, judging, I was just—”
That was when they heard a thump and a curse. They jolted, looking at each other.
“The archives,” Remus whispered.
“He did say it wasn’t on the floor.”
Remus took off towards the back rooms, Sirius on his heels. He fumbled with his keys for a moment, then shoved the correct one into the lock and pushed the door open.
“Saint,” Sirius panted.
Remus looked from the pried open window, to the boy peaking his head through the glass—Logan, he remembered—and then, finally, to Saint, crouched on the floor and pulling flat drawers open, one after another.
Saint just looked over his shoulder at them, flashlight between his teeth, then back to the file drawer he was rummaging through.
“If you were hoping to catch me, maybe don’t leave your big flashy car out front, Lupin.”
Remus narrowed his eyes. He hadn’t even thought of the car.
“Look, I can’t let you steal something,” Remus said.
Saint scoffed. “Look, if it means that much to you, I’ll put it right back, we just need to look at it.”
Logan dropped in through the window, then, hissing as he cut his forearm on what looked like a stray nail. He looked up, seemingly mindless of the blood dripping near his fingers.
“We’ll just take a picture,” Logan said. “I promise.”
“Who says I’ll let you?” Remus said.
“Because I’m limber like that,” Saint said. “I can get in and out of here, and I can certainly slip through your sailor hands.”
“Yeah, is that something you worry about?” Sirius said, and Saint’s head snapped towards him. The light fell over Sirius’ face. “Being able to make the escape?”
Remus thought the words sounded menacing, at least he thought Saint thought that, but Sirius’ expression was softer. Worried, even.
“Very funny,” Saint finally replied, and his smile had a bite to it around the light. “Ha, ha.”
Saint Clair, Remus realized. Sirius was talking about Saint Clair. He looked at Logan again. Logan was watching Saint almost eagerly.
“What are you even looking for?” Remus asked.
There was a grunt as a third boy piled in—Leo, from The Lion.
“Leo?” Sirius said, looking between the three of them. “Jesus, Saint, what’s going on?”
“We’re looking for something,” Saint’s words were marred by the metal between his teeth. “Merde, aren’t you listening?”
“I told you no,” Remus said.
Saint pulled open another drawer. “And I told me yes.”
Remus and Sirius looked at each other. Remus shook his head, at a loss, and Sirius sighed.
“At least tell us what it is,” Sirius said, and went to crouch beside Saint.
Remus watched as Sirius put a hand on his back, low and firm. It was a familiar and comfortable gesture, and Remus thought Saint maybe pushed into it a little.
Remus tilted his head, looking at the soft splay of Sirius’ fingers.
“A map,” Leo said, and Saint all but hissed at him. “What? We’re not taking anything. I don’t even know why we broke in, really, we should have just asked—”
Saint took the light from his mouth. “I’m nothing if not a showboat.”
“Anything?” Logan asked, peering closer to what Saint was looking at. Saint had two papers in his hands, but he tossed them down roughly—too roughly for Remus’ liking.
Saint ignored Logan with a long sigh, and turned to Remus, bumping one of the flat drawers closed with a hip. “We are in need of a treasure map, Lupin.”
Remus blinked. “Excuse me?”
“Don’t tell me the mad-house you grew up in didn’t have tales of The Voldemort.”
Remus felt his blood spike, heat draping itself around his neck. “Don’t fucking—”
“What Saint means,” Leo stepped forward, eyes apologetic. “I…my dad was looking for it. He was close and…and he’s—Saint and Logan agreed to help me find it. I didn’t know we’d be doing this. They know how much it means to me—”
“If your dad’s close to finding it, why not just use his map?” Remus asked.
Leo glanced up at him, then down at the drawers. “It went down with him and his boat.”
“Oh,” Remus stuttered out. “I…”
Leo just shook his head. “I remember what it looks like. I’ll know it when I see it.”
Saint waved his hand, and Remus noticed Luke’s watch again. “What’s it going to say, Knut, the ancient treasure lies here?”
“It’s not to The Voldemort,” Leo said. “It’s to a trading post, a stop point just off of Hogwarts. In the Cradle. People thought that it might have been a sort of cover operation, that maybe someone found the gold and was using it as a way to smuggle it out unnoticed—”
“So, it’s not even there?” Logan asked.
Leo splayed his hands helplessly. “I don’t know!”
Remus looked at Sirius when he laughed. “You’re kidding.” Sirius knocked Saint’s shoulder. “You’re looking for the fucking Voldemort? Since when?”
“You’re the one who wants to leave this island,” Saint said lowly. “To do that you’ll need money.”
Sirius’ expression changed in the dim light. The moon was high now, and he looked silver and shadowed—and surprised.
“What?” Sirius said faintly. Saint wouldn’t meet his eye. “But you don’t want—”
Logan stepped forward, eyes still on Remus. “Look. We’re not crazy. Leo wants this for his dad, and I—I need to help someone. I told you when we met, didn’t I?”
“You said you were looking for someone,” Remus replied.
Logan nodded quickly.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Saint said and rose, turning to Logan and pointing the light towards his chest like an accusing finger. “Hold every single one of your horses. This is not about Saint Clair, and this is not about Finn. This is about your stupidity and The Carrows.”
“No,” Logan said. “This is about getting Finn out.”
“The Carrows,” Leo repeated, looking at Logan. Logan glanced at him, then rubbed a hand over his face.
“Then help me with Finn,” Logan said, louder this time. “I made a mistake with The Carrows, fine, but are you going to be my next one?”
“No,” Saint all but snarled back.
Logan shoved him, hard, sending Saint crashing back against the files, making them rattle.
“Hey,” Sirius said lowly, and then he had a hand wrapped up in Logan’s shirt, pushing him back.
“Stop,” Remus said, putting his hands out. “Jesus, not here. Maybe you all don’t give a shit, but everything in here is old. It’s precious.” He turned to Leo. “A map, you said a map, just tell me so we can all leave.”
Leo bit his lip, gesturing towards the drawers. “These are labeled?”
Remus nodded and watched them all warily as Leo took the light from Logan and crouched to read the writing on the drawers.
Saint and Logan were still staring at each other. Remus could practically feel some unsaid words between them. Sirius had let Logan go, but Remus didn’t want to keep the three of them in this room together for much longer.
“Here,” Leo said suddenly, and the sound of one of the rattling drawers filled the room. “It’s—oh.”
“What?” Logan asked, shoving around Sirius’ body towards the drawer. Remus followed, glancing back once. Saint and Sirius had their heads close. Sirius had his hand on Saint’s neck, and they were talking softly but quickly to each other.
Remus looked away.
The label read, Cartography. C. 18th. Commerce Port, but in place of anything that the label suggested, was an index card with neat handwriting on it.
On loan: Victor Deveaux
“Deveaux,” Saint said, clucking his tongue. “Deveaux, Deveaux, Deveaux…”
“No,” Remus heard Leo breathe.
“That’s Luke’s dad,” Remus said. He stared at the name. “Oh. That’s…”
“What?” Logan asked. “What do you know?”
Remus shot him a look. He seemed even more on edge than a few moments ago.
“I’d sort of forgotten with everything. Everything that happened to Luke this past year, but,” Remus said. “Luke was always sort of obsessed with the treasure. Only because his dad was, though. When we got older, me and James sort of made fun of him for it, but when we were younger, Mr. Deveaux used to hide little trinkets or candy for us somewhere in the house, and then write out clues for us to work through.” Remus smiled at the memory. It was happy, and it was sad. It seemed like too long ago. “It was fun.”
“So, he has the map,” Logan said. “Can you take us there?”
“Can you relax, speed racer, thanks,” Saint snapped.
“We need the map,” Logan barked back.
“It’s almost three in the morning,” Remus said.
“All the better,” Saint replied and closed the window they had come through before opening the museum door.
“Can’t this wait until morning?”
“Luke won’t just hand it over,” Sirius offered.
Remus turned to him. “What do you care?”
“Saint cares.”
Remus blinked. Sirius was all walled up again, eyes silver.
“Lead the way, Sailor,” Saint said.
~
Luke’s house was large and pristine, but it looked abandoned somehow. Saint stared up at the white walls, the stone chimney that he couldn’t imagine ever got used. He wondered if it was as grand as the Potters’ house inside. It certainly looked that way, manicured and vast. But it lacked the warmth. It seemed to shift in the night wind.
“We can’t just knock,” Remus broke the silence.
“We should wait,” Leo said somewhat nervously.
“I’ve got this,” Saint replied, chin tilted up towards the large house’s windows. “Which one’s his?”
Remus laughed. “You’re not serious.”
“No, that’d be him,” Saint said, clapping Sirius on the back—who rolled his eyes. “Now, tell me.”
“What are you going to do, climb up the drain pipe?”
Saint shucked his flip flops into the grass. “Yes, sir.”
“You could fall,” Sirius warned.
Saint looked at the windows, set deep into the house’s frame. The rough painted sides and stray vine climbing the surface. He looked at the tilted roof. “I won’t. Now which room is his?”
Remus, behind Saint, was quiet for a long time. Saint kept his eyes forward, squeezing his hands into fists, and then letting them out again. His heart beat hard in his chest, as if remembering a memory his mind wouldn’t.
“He keeps a light on,” Remus finally sighed, and pointed. “That window there.”
The metal and stone were cold beneath Saint’s feet. The pipe was sturdy, but every time it creaked he could hear the others whisper from below. The higher Saint climbed, the more the wind picked up. He closed his eyes letting it push his hair off of his forehead. The summer night was humid, and the moon was high.
“Saint?” he heard Sirius whisper from below.
Saint didn’t respond, just kept climbing. That was how climbing worked. Maybe, if you were lucky, you could rest, but the real part was pushing through the aches and the fear.
What do you hate so much that you’re helping us? Logan had asked him in the car on their way to the museum, and Saint had said something silly, as he always did. He’d smiled. Logan hadn’t laughed, but anyone else would have.
Saint thought of Sirius’ hand, low on his back in the archives rooms.
But you don’t want to go, Sirius had been about to say when Saint told him why they needed the gold. But you don’t want to leave.
If they had been alone, Saint might have actually told him the truth.
But you do, he would have said. If there was anything that wouldn’t be wasteful, it was getting Sirius Black off of this island and away from his own, terrified self. Saint might be a waste, but Sirius wasn’t.
Saint reached the roof and crouched, breathing hard. He could see the light from Luke’s room below him, the slates of the slight, pointed arch above the window frame. It was a short drop. He made it soundlessly, glancing down at the dark shape of the others as he swung himself onto the wooden sill. He could see the source of the light now.
It was a small bulb, plugged in low on the wall by the bed. Simple and cheap, with some sort of picture lit up. A sea shell, Saint thought. It didn’t illuminate much, but Saint could see Luke’s face. He was turned towards the window, on his stomach with an arm beginning to fall over the side of the mattress. He was bare to his waist, where the sheets pooled along his lower back.
Saint pushed at the top of the window until it cracked enough for him to curl his fingers beneath the frame. Luke didn’t stir, not even when Saint let the humid night air meet the AC, and set his bare feet softly on the hardwood floor.
Saint still didn’t know if Luke was a snoop, but he certainly knew that he was.
The floor was stacked with books. They were shoved over to the sides of the walls, near the desk beside a tangle of laptop chords and phone chargers. The bedside table was littered with old water glasses and coffee mugs, clothes occupied more of the floor than the open closet. There were small, empty plastic bags littered throughout the room. Saint picked up one, looking at the few grains of remnants.
He let it flutter back to the floor.
Everyone needed to control something, or at least think they did. Saint, for one too many times since Logan arrived, let himself think about Saint Clair. They’d taken clarity from him. He didn’t know how The Voldemort would get him that back—maybe nothing would. It would certainly take Sirius away, the only constant.
But everyone needed to control something. Or at least think they did. If Saint was going to be alone, he wouldn’t let it sneak up on him. Not again.
Saint was as good at tricking himself as he was at tricking others. And he liked gold. Part of him liked Luke, too. Stubborn. Mean. Beautiful. That would never change.
Saint looked down at Luke’s sleeping form. He looked younger in his sleep. He was dreaming. Saint could tell, there was a flicker beneath his eyelids. The bruise on his cheek was slowly fading, but a faint purple still graced his cheek.
“Tricky bastard,” Saint said aloud, and Luke stirred, cracking an eye open.
There it was. The sleepy look of Crucio, the haze. The lack of will, or maybe the abundance of it.
“You,” Luke mumbled. “You’re…”
His eyes flickered over Saint’s shoulder. Saint wondered who he was seeing. Saint crouched beside him and stroked a hand through his hair. Luke leaned into it. A loved one, then.
Luke blinked at him, and his expression shifted. He scrambled backwards, cursing.
“Saint,” Luke said, blinking. Saint laughed. He sort of liked that Luke couldn’t tell if he was really there or not.
“Hello, tweedle,” Saint said, and held up Luke’s father’s watch. “I need something from you.”

Chapter two - The First Kegger
Tumblr media
"C’mon John B. Why is she taking so long?” Kiara complained.
“I don’t know she told me she was ready” said John B while looking at the dock, waiting for Sarah.
“Bullshit” JJ spoke, lying on his back with his red hat covering his eyes.
“She’s coming she’s coming” John B. said as he saw Sarah running in the dock.
“Sorry guys” she hopped in the boat laughing.
“What happened?” Pope asked as he started the engine.
“Rafe has been high and drunk since the party he threw three days ago and my dad and Rose arrived today so I was watching the show” she answered.
They all laughed at Rafe’s misery, Pope was boating the way to the marsh, when Kie pointed something out.
“Someone moved to the Carte’s house” as she speaks the five turned their heads to the house.
“New Kooks” said John B.
“What a fucking nightmare” JJ rolled his eyes.
“You know them?” Pope asked Sarah.
“There’s nothing to know Pope, Kooks are all the same” JJ stated.
“Hey!” Sarah complained “anyway I don’t, but I heard she went to Rafe’s party”
“She” Kie, John B and Pope said at the same time.
“Yeah, I heard Rafe and Topper say she is the new Kook princess” Sarah rolled her eyes.
“New Kook princess, is jealousy what I hear Sarah” JJ teased, a smirk forming across his face “She might go for Topper”
“She has a boyfriend, and I’m not jealous I’m good where I am” she said leaning towards John B and kissed him.
The other three whined about the demonstration of affection. They spend the day in the marsh, drinking, swimming and smoking, mostly JJ, as usual. Later, in the afternoon the guys went buying some beer for the Kegger, while the girls went home to get ready.
“Don’t know man, the last Kook princess turned out to be fine maybe this one too” said John B. while looking for the beer.
“Shut up man.” said JJ “you’re just so whipped that you think every kook is good”
“I don’t know, maybe the new kook won’t be like the kooks we already got here, don’t know if that makes sense” Pope spoke, and john B nodded, agreeing with him “But he is right though, you are whipped"
“You two can think whatever you want” JJ rolled his eyes “don’t know why you care anyway”
They were driving back to the Chateau, music out loud and JJ making some blunts in the back.
“Dude didn’t you just smoke like five minutes ago?” Pope said looking at JJ.
“Relax dude, this are for tonight” JJ said with a smirk in his face.
They arrived at the Chateau and went straight to the porch, JJ got first and sat on the hammock, the other two sat on the chairs, making time to go get the girls. Silence reigned between them.
“I think I’m going to make a move on Kie tonight” said Pope suddenly, making John B spill his beer and JJ choke with the smoke.
“You what?” they both said.
“I’m going to make a move on Kie” Pope repeated.
“You sure dude? ” JJ asked.
“Yeah, I mean we have been so close lately, like you don’t even know” said Pope.
“That’s good man” said John B.
“I don’t care if she rejects me” Pope said but it felt like he was trying to convince himself “But I have to try right?”
“Totally” the other two said nodding.
“We are here for you man” said JJ from the hammock.
The time arrived and they got into the van to go get Kie and Sarah. The sun was almost set when they parked in front of the Boneyard and there were already a lot of people. They placed the beer and started drinking, JJ disappeared in a matter of minutes, but that was normal, he went hunting, probably some tourons, Kie and Pope were talking to another group, and John B. and Sarah were dancing.
“Oh I forgot to tell you” said Sarah “I’m pretty sure my brother is coming with the kooks”
“Well they are welcome you know that” John b said raising his beer.
“I think he’s coming with the new kooks” she said.
“Don’t tell JJ” John B and Sara laughed.
As they continued dancing, at the other side of the Kegger Pope was trying to calm himself, he was really nervous, but Kie kept talking with the strangers, and he wasn’t sure when to make the move, he didn’t even knew what he was going to do, he got a little speech prepared but he was nervous.
More into the night the group was almost all together again, JJ was still missing, they were hanging around with others and about to start playing beer pong when he finally arrived.
“You assholes were going to play without me?” JJ shouted “you want to lose or something” he hugged Pope from behind “You did it?” he whispered is his ear.
He shook his head and JJ palm his back.
“Ok let’s play” he rubbed his palms together “Fuck no” JJ said rolling his eyes.
They all followed his glare and saw Rafe and the group arriving.
“Guess those are the new Kooks” said Kie.
The six pairs of eyes went on you and Liam they examined you from the distance.
You were a little nervous; Rafe said all kinds of trash about this place, you didn’t even know why he wanted to go so bad. You saw around and the only thing that made the difference between them was the less fancy clothes, you rolled your eyes and thought all that hate was stupid. The beach was full of people, the screams traveled with the wind, longs and bonfires decorated the sand. Rafe was looking for his sister and deep inside you didn’t want him to find her, he was so intense in the car saying that you are going to make his sister a kook again.
“Sarah” Rafe shouted and you wanted to die, couple of seconds later a girl came closer, she was beautiful, and you could see they looked alike “hey sis, wanted you to meet y/n” he dragged her towards you.
“Sarah, nice to meet you” she said, obviously uncomfortable with her brothers attitude.
“Nice to meet you” you shake the girls hand and when you two noticed you were left alone “sorry for that Rafe insisted”
“Sorry you have to deal with him” she said “that was your boyfriend?”
“Yes, he arrived here couple of weeks before me so I think he already knows his ways around” you said looking for Liam.
“Well when you are a kook you have to know how to move in Pogue territory” she said smiling, she was so nice.
“Why all the nicknames?” you asked “not wanting to be rude but I think it is a little stupid, I mean we are all people at the end, I still don’t get why all the hate” she smiled at you with surprise in his eyes, and you regretted what you said, thinking she got offended or something.
“You are right, but I think there are some people that are way into it and won’t change, my brother for example” she said.
“Yeah I kinda notice that at the party the other day” you rolled your eyes and she laughed.
“Hey let me introduce you to my friends, I think you will like them” she said and gave you a smile.
You glanced at the group she was pointing and noticed they were looking at you two talking, you started to walk with her towards them felling already nervous, but the group of girls from the other night came in the middle, half screaming and half hugging you, you couldn’t understand any of them, you saw Sarah and mouthed “maybe later” she nodded at you smiling and disappeared as you were being pushed away by the girls.
Sarah went back to the group of curious people that was waiting for the information.
“So?” John B. questioned.
“She seems nice, I think you guys will like her” Sarah happily said.
JJ scoffed rolling his eyes and said nothing.
“Why?” Kie asked.
“Well first of all I got the vibe that she kinda hates Rafe” said Sarah.
“That happens often” said Pope.
“And she told me she found stupid all the Pogue versus Kook stuff”
“No way” Kie smiled.
“Of course she thinks is stupid she’s a fucking kook” JJ sighed “she already has everything”
“She said, and I quote “why all the hate at the end we are all people”” Sarah smiled.
“I think I already like her” said Kie.
“We are going to play or not?” said JJ losing his patience “because there’s a hot girl giving me a naughty look right now and I wanna know if I’m losing my time here” he shrugged his shoulders.
They all rolled their eyes at JJ.
“Let’s play” John B spoke.
They played a couple of rounds of beer pong making people to gather around them, after the third win in a row from JJ he glanced at the girl that has come close to him and excused himself out, taking her to somewhere more private. The others kept playing a bit more.
You saw Sarah with her friends in the distance; they were having fun, you smiled at that, from where you were they seemed nice, at least nicer than Rafe and the guys. The girls around you kept talking but you zoomed out of the conversation a while ago, all the screams and the squeaky voices were giving you a headache. Right now you were trying to find Liam in the distance.
“So you are coming tomorrow Y/n?” said one of the girls putting his hand on your shoulder, Rebecca.
“Sorry what?” you said.
They laughed “you want to come with us shopping tomorrow?” she asked.
“Um…” you didn’t like to go shopping, but if parties here are every week you needed more clothes “Sure”
They all screamed happily and you smiled at them. You excused yourself out and went for some beer, founding Sarah was there too, and she smiled at you when she saw you.
“The girls know you escaped?” she questioned.
“They were giving me a headache” you said laughing, and hear someone laugh behind Sarah.
She looked back at the girl that was with here “Y/n this is Kiara” she introduced you to her friend.
“Kie” said the girl.
“Nice to meet you” you said smiling.
“I pity you, having to be with those girls” Kiara said and took a sip of her beer.
“And I think I agreed to go shopping by mistake, I wasn’t listening” you closed your eyes and sigh.
They both laugh and you smiled, even if you just meet them it felt easy to be with them. Sarah took your empty cup and pours you more beer.
“Come, let me introduce you to the rest” Sarah looped his arm with yours and guided you.
“Guys this is Y/n” the two guys turned around and gave you a big smile.
“I’m John B.” said the brunette.
“I’m Pope” said the one with darker skin.
You smiled back at the guys “Nice to meet you”
“So you are new here” spoke John B, it wasn’t a question.
“Yes I arrived last week”
“And you have a boyfriend right?” Pope asked.
You glanced at him, asking how he knows that.
“There are no secrets here y/n, words travel fast” Kiara said.
“Yes his name is Liam” you said smiling “but I can’t find him right now” you looked over your shoulders hoping you will see him in the distance, but you didn’t.
“We heard that you are the new Kook princess” said John B. teasing you.
You rolled your eyes “Don't get me started in that” they looked at you with curious eyes so you continued “I find it stupid, no offense I’m new here, but I don’t know, there is more in people that just the amount of money they have”
“We are so going to be friends” said Kiara and you smiled at her.
The rest of the group smiled at you and offer you to play beer pong with them, you accepted.
Sarah and you sighed as you two lost again.
“Nothing personal girls” said Pope laughing.
John B came to your side of the table and kissed Sarah, just in that moment you realized they were together, and that made you thought about Liam, you felt guilty for forgetting him.
“I have to go look for my boyfriend” you said to them, they all smiled at you.
“See you around” Kie said and you waved at her.
The place was full of people but Liam had to be somewhere, so you started looking at the groups trying to see a familiar face. You saw Kelce first and came close to him, asking if he had saw Liam.
“I saw him a couple of minutes ago, I think he went for beer” he said.
So you turned your way back to the beers, there you saw Topper and Rafe, and asked them the same question, but they didn’t know. You kept looking for him, about to give up you realize there was a place close to some trees that had way less people, so you went there, the people was smoking weed, and you thought about the first and last time you smoked, three months ago, just when your dad told you about the moving, you were so sad that you went to your best friend house and ended up smoking with her. “Maybe I’ll do it again” you thought. You got closer to some trees and heard people were behind them, you got even closer and regretted it immediately, there was a couple kissing passionately, and to your bad luck just at that moment the girl opened her eyes and saw you, stopping everything.
“Oh my god I’m sorry” you said quickly “I was looking for my boyfriend”
“Well I’m not him so you can leave” the guy said stepping back.
“Sorry” you said again totally embarrassed.
“Yeah we heard” he turned around; it was the blond guy you saw before with Sarah’s friends.
“Y/n?” you heard and turned to find Liam, finally.
“Liam”
“What are you doing here?” he asked confused.
“I was looking for you, I looked everywhere” you said.
“And privacy is dead” the blond said “c’mon” he called the girl, then he looked at you and Liam and rolled his eyes “of course, the new kooks” he said with scorn is his voice “you kooks always ruining everything, you guys know this is our fucking side of the island right”
Liam was about to speak but you did it first “Don’t” you told Liam, you knew he was going to make things worse, it was his gift; he looked at you and nodded.
“Yeah listen to the girl man” he joked “she’s the princess” a smirk was covering his face, you rolled your eyes at the comment and turned around “admit it you know your boyfriend can’t with me”
You grabbed Liam’s arm, and kept walking away.
“It’s not worth it, he is a miserable Pogue” he said, the comment made you angry.
“He is such a hypocrite” you thought but didn’t say anything to avoid a fight.
You continued the party not letting Liam out of your sight, you ended up with the girls again, you were having fun, but deep inside you wanted to go with Sarah and her friends.
This time you got home sober, thanked Liam for the ride and kissed him goodnight, but before stepping out of the car he grabbed your wrist.
“What were you doing with the Pogues” he asked.
“I told you, I ran into the blonde because I was looking for you” his jaw clenched.
“I wasn’t talking about the blonde” he said, obviously mad “the other ones, you were playing beer pong with them”
“Those were Sarah’s friends, Rafe sister” you explained.
“I know, I don’t like them” he shook his head.
“Why? You don’t know them?”
“I just don’t, and I don’t like the blondie either”
“Well I kinda do like Sarah’s friends, so if you excuse me, goodnight” you freed your wrist from his grip, and got out the car.
You went straight to your room, mumbling Liam’s words for yourself, you rolled your eyes and decided to forget it, you lay in bed and the moment your head touched the pillow you fell asleep.

Years ago
Isaac looked out over the surface of the lake, the ripples moving over it with the gentle breeze that ruffled his hair. A good day for sailing, his dad always said, and then chuckled like he’d made a joke.
It was a nice day. The sun was high in the sky, not too hot. The trees on the shore seemed to almost shimmer as the wind shook their leaves, and Isaac watched a seagull slowly circle above him before it settled, floating on the top of the lake like a duck, close enough to the tiny rowboat for him to see the oil-like shimmer of its feathers.
Isaac had no idea how far away the sea was, and he’d never even seen it – so he wondered how, exactly, the ocean bird had found his lake, so far away from its home. He took a final bite of his sandwich and flung the crust towards the bird. It squawked and flapped its wings a few times, bigger across than any bird Isaac had gotten close to on land. It snapped up the crust and swallowed it whole.
He turned and grinned at his father, checking to see if he was watching. His dad smiled right back and brushed the crumbs off his hands, looking out across the water.
“You ready to keep rowing, bud?” he said.
Isaac nodded enthusiastically, and his father’s smile felt warm as he grabbed the oars in both hands and leaned back, pulling them through the water. Isaac’s heart pounded faster, both from how hard he was rowing, and with the excitement of starting to move so fast, and it was because of how strong he was. He thought he must be rowing faster than he could run on land. He’d have to ask his mom to try racing him down the pier, next time she came to the lake with them. Her on the walkway, him in the boat. He figured he might not be able to beat his mother, but… maybe another kid. Maybe if his friend Lacey could convince their parents to let him bring them…
The muscles of his back and arms burned, and he welcomed it. There was something about this: leaning hard into the oars, sending the boat all but flying over the water, with his dad watching with approving eyes. He was a good rower. His dad said so. He might even be as good as his dad one day, once he started growing. ‘Filling out,’ his mom had called it once, and ever since then he’d been asking for more meat with dinner. If he was going to fill out, he needed to fill himself with something.
“Hey, look at that,” his father said, pointing over Isaac’s shoulder with excitement in his voice. Isaac stopped rowing for a moment, looking behind him for what his father was pointing at.
His eyes went wide. Flying low over the surface of the water was the biggest bird he’d ever seen, all neck and wings and seemingly little else. His mouth gaped open and he shot a glance behind him at his dad.
“What is that?” he asked, his voice low with awe.
“I think it’s a crane,” his dad said, shading his eyes with his hand. “Or a heron.” He chuckled. “Not sure what the difference is. Still, that’s pretty cool, right? I didn’t know they lived in this area.”
Isaac abandoned the oars and turned fully around to get a closer look. “Whoa,” he said, as the bird beat its wings a few times and landed in the shallows all the way at the edge of the water. It stood on two spindly legs, looking like it was standing on stilts. “A crane.”
“Or a heron,” his father said with a snort. “We can look at pictures when we get home.”
Isaac rose up on his knees for a closer look. “Yeah,” he said softly, squinting as the sun shone brightly off the surface of the water. He pushed himself into a crouch, feeling the tiny boat wobble under him.
“Whoa, buddy,” his father said, his hand shooting out towards Isaac. “Hey, sit down. You’re too big now to be standing up in the boat.” His voice was still warm, soft.
Isaac glanced back at his father, his lips pulling into a wide grin. “I can keep my balance.” He stood up a little higher, feeling a thrill as the boat wobbled again – but he stayed on his feet.
His father huffed, and his smile fell slightly. “I know you can, buddy,” he said, his voice showing a hint of tension. “You’re just… making your dad nervous. Have a seat, we can see if we can row closer.”
“But I can see it from here!” Isaac said, standing all the way up. The seagull in the water near the boat started, and took off from the water with a flurry of wings. The sudden noise made Isaac jump. He felt the boat tip under him and he pitched to one side, his hands flying out to catch himself. He tripped on the lunch box in the bottom of the boat and fell hard, the side of the boat hitting him right in the stomach. His mouth gaped open with the burst of shock and pain.
“Isaac!” his father shouted, and Isaac felt the boat lurch even further to the side.
Stunned, he flipped over the side and fell face-first into the cool water.
Water rushed into Isaac’s open mouth. All around him he could feel cold water and see fractured light, a wash of blue-green. He couldn’t tell which way was up – black spots danced in front of his vision from the crush of pain. He felt paralyzed, like the blow had frozen his muscles. Water poured into his throat. It burned in his nose and suddenly, he could move again.
His limbs shot out in frenzied panic. He could feel the water filling his shoes, dragging on his clothes like they weighed a hundred pounds. He could swim, he could swim, but… the terror clutched at his limbs and crushed his chest. He let out a scream in a stream of bubbles, and the sound seemed miles away. His vision clouded as he opened his eyes. He distantly saw a circle of yellow, floating above him in a green sky.
Not the sky.
He shuddered as the water crept inside him, forcing out the air. His stomach felt like someone was squeezing him. He kicked hard, one last desperate attempt to reach the surface.
A hand closed around his hair and dragged him upwards.
He threw his head back and sucked in a gasp of air as he broke the surface of the lake. The water burned in his chest and he coughed, his eyes wide, his fingers clawing for something to grab onto. His nails dug into his dad’s arms, and his dad let out a hiss.
“I-Isaac,” his dad heaved, his voice twisting like he was crying. Isaac clawed at his father’s shirt, pushing himself up, desperate to breathe. “Isaac, buddy, I got you, I—” The words were drowned out as his father’s head slipped beneath the surface of the lake. Isaac sobbed and grabbed at anything he could to keep his own head above water. His lungs burned like fire lived inside them.
His father broke the surface with a gasp. “Isaac, it’s okay, just, just hang on—” His father’s hand shot out to the side, and Isaac felt the water slide past him. He turned his head and saw the side of the small boat, overturned now. His father heaved him up onto it, and he struck the keel, forcing more air out of his lungs. He dug his nails into the wood and clawed to stay on. His father remained in the water, clutching the side of the boat.
“Hey!” his father roared, waving his arms at a nearby boat. “Help! Help!”
Isaac moaned and coughed out another mouthful of water. His eyes slid shut and he slumped, exhausted. He couldn’t breathe. The water rattled in his chest. He slipped off the side of the boat, back into the water.
“No, no no no no,” his father gasped, and heaved him back onto the wet wood. Isaac wailed brokenly and dug his fingers in again.
He could hear something, a scream, maybe, or a siren. Or the wind. He could barely lift his head to look. There were lights on the shore, flashing in red and white. His vision blurred again as water dripped into his eyes. His head thumped back down onto the boat and he drifted, his heart hammering in his chest. Every cough took his breath away, wracked through his body until he felt like he was drowning again.
Distantly, he heard the sound of a motorboat. Getting closer. Closer. Then voices.
“Is he— Is he…?” A woman’s voice.
“I, I d-don’t know,” his father shouted, and his voice broke. “P-please, help…” Isaac felt his father’s hands under his armpits, lifting him, and another, unfamiliar pair of hands dragging him over the side of another boat. He shivered as his clothes clung to his skin. The boat wobbled, and another body landed beside him— His father. The boat lurched and started to move.
“Isaac,” his father sobbed, and Isaac felt his own heart twist at the sound. “Isaac, please, please… Talk to me, buddy…”
“Get him on his side.” The order came with a shaking voice.
Isaac hung limp in his father’s arms as he was rolled. Water came trickling out of his mouth. He convulsed weakly, sucking in lungfuls of air. It didn’t help. His chest felt heavy.
His father’s voice again. “Isaac? Oh, god. Isaac, Isaac! Breathe, buddy, come on…”
Isaac coughed, and obeyed. His throat felt like it was spasming shut.
His father’s voice faded. “Did someone call 911?”
A pause. “Y-yeah, I, I think so…?”
Isaac shuddered and started to cry. “D-daddy,” he whimpered, his hands reaching for him. “Daddy…”
Tears mixed with the water on his face as his father dragged him up off the bottom of the boat and crushed him to his chest. “Isaac, buddy, I’m sorry, oh my god, Isaac…”
Isaac coughed weakly, gasping at the air that didn’t seem to be going in. “Daddy…”
“I got you,” his father sobbed. “I got you.” There was a bump, a shudder, and Isaac was being carried. He clutched to his dad’s neck, trembling. “Th-thank you,” his father said with a shaking voice. The world tilted around Isaac. The sun shone in his eyes. He raised his head again and blinked as he saw someone coming towards him, brown hair pulled back in a ponytail, brown eyes that looked at him steadily, wearing dark blue clothes and a badge that shone on her chest. He clutched harder at his father as he fell to his knees in front of the woman.
“What happened?” she said crisply, very serious.
“H-he just f-fell out of the boat,” his father sobbed, shaking. “I d-don’t, it happened so fast, he f-fell and the boat tipped over and he… he h-hasn’t been acting right, he—”
“Did he hit his head?” Still in his father’s arms, Isaac felt hands move through his hair, pressing down on his skull, pressing on his neck.
“I d-don’t think so? I… I didn’t see… He wasn’t breathing right, please, please—”
“Hey,” the woman snapped, and his father fell silent immediately. Her voice softened. “What’s your name?”
“J-Jonathan,” his father whimpered.
“Okay. My name’s Charlotte. I need you to breathe for me, okay? I need you to stay calm for him.” Isaac’s father took a shuddering breath. “What kind of boat?”
“A r-rowboat,” his father croaked. Isaac’s mouth gaped open. His lips felt numb.
“Hm. Looks like you took a swim, too. Where he fell, was it deep enough that you could reach the bottom?”
His father was silent. He shook his head.
Charlotte shrugged. “I mean, that’s good. Hey, buddy.” Isaac whined as Charlotte squeezed his arm. “What’s your name?”
“Isaac,” he whimpered, his chest heaving. He couldn’t breathe.
“Did he lose consciousness at any point?” Isaac flinched as something cold pressed to his chest under his shirt, then moved, to the other side of his chest. “Take deep breaths, buddy,” Charlotte said. The cold circle moved to two spots lower on his chest. “Yeah, sounds like he inhaled a lot of water.”
“Lose c-consciousness?” his father said, distantly. “No… no, I, I think h-he was… awake…” His arms tightened around Isaac. “Wh-what, what should I—”
“Well, he definitely needs to go to the ER,” Charlotte said. “I’d recommend you let us take hi—”
“Yes,” his father said hollowly. “Can I… c-can I come with him?”
“Yeah, of course. Our cot’s right over here, can you carry him?”
“Y-yeah. Yeah.”
“Did you get hurt, or anything?”
“No.”
“Okay, good. This is my partner, Ethan. This is Jonathan and Isaac.”
“H-hello.”
A man’s voice, now. “We’ll take good care of him. Hey, Isaac. Yeah, right here.”
Isaac whimpered as his father put him down on a small bed with wheels, sitting just outside the ambulance that was parked by the pier. Its lights were still on.
Charlotte looked at Isaac’s father. “Dad, can you get his shirt and pants off? He needs to get dry. I can grab a blanket for you in a sec.”
“Sure,” his dad said flatly, as if from a million miles away. He reached out and gently guided Isaac’s soaking wet shirt off over his head.
“Daddy,” Isaac whimpered, panic creeping back into his chest. He clawed at his neck, his throat spasming shut, opening again. “C-can’t, can’t—”
“I know,” his father breathed, gently removing Isaac’s pants. A blanket was immediately spread over him. “The, the, the EMTs are gonna take good care of you, okay?”
Isaac’s fingers wound in his father’s shirt. “Dad…”
Ethan, the other EMT, put his hand on his father’s shoulder, and he stepped away. Isaac whimpered softly as Charlotte pressed a button on the end of the cot, and it lifted into the air. The cot shuddered as they pushed it towards the ambulance and loaded it in.
Isaac’s tears stopped when his father climbed into the back of the ambulance and took his hand again.
Behind him, Charlotte was talking. “Hey, dad. He needs oxygen.” Ethan clipped something to his finger, and behind him, a beeping started. It was fast. “Oh, yup. Eighty-eight percent. Ethan, let’s get a line started, too. So, Jonathan, he might not like the mask at first, so I need you to help me. Just hold it to his face. Once he’s used to it, we can use the strap to keep it on, but for now, just hold it up. Okay?”
His dad looked at Charlotte with tear-filled eyes, and nodded. Charlotte passed an oxygen mask into his hand, and he held it to Isaac’s face.
It was smothering. Isaac sobbed and turned his head away, tears rolling down his cheeks.
“Hey, buddy, no,” his dad said gently. “It’s oxygen. It’ll help. It’ll help you breathe, buddy, okay? Can I give you the oxygen?”
Isaac looked back at his father. His lower lip trembled and he nodded, slowly. He did his best to hold still as his father held the plastic mask over his face again.
Panic spiked in his throat, and he squirmed under the blanket. He shivered and suddenly realized he was freezing. Cool air blew over his face, smelling almost like the beach ball his friend Dakota brought the lake sometimes when they wanted to picnic on the beach. Slowly, he felt his breathing come easier. The beeping behind him slowed down. The ambulance started moving with a lurch.
“Ninety-five percent. Much better.” Charlotte shuffled along the other side of the cot, smiling gently. “Hey, buddy. Feeling any better?”
He could breathe better. He dragged in a deep breath. He could feel the water rumbling in his chest. It felt like when he’d gotten sick a few years ago, and his parents had taken him to the clinic and left with a bottle of pills that made his stomach hurt. Still, they made him better.
“Do, do I need antibiotics?” he said weakly.
Charlotte laughed. It was a nice sound. “Maybe,” she said. “But not until we get to the hospital, at least. Dad, we can probably just use the strap now. Isaac, if we put the strap on the mask, can your dad let go?”
Isaac nodded, and shivered again under the blanket. The ambulance bounced as it rolled over a bump.
His father patted his pockets, then drew his cell phone out of the pocket on his pants. It was dripping wet. “Shit,” he hissed, then glanced at Isaac apologetically. “Um, M-Ms. Charlotte…”
Charlotte glanced up from where she was assembling something on the counter, something with tubes and what looked like a needle. “Mm-hm?”
“Can I, um… c-could I… borrow a phone? I n-need to call my wife. I… what hospital are you taking us to?”
“Boulder City General is the closest,” Charlotte said, reaching in her own pocket for her phone. She passed it to Isaac’s father. “We’ll be there in about twenty, if you want to tell her to come in the main ER entrance and go to the check-in counter. They’ll take her back from there.”
Isaac’s father took the phone and dialed the number with shaking hands. He held the phone to his ear. “C-Carol-Ann?” he said, his voice weak. “Um… You need to get to the general hospital. Isaac’s okay, but… we had an accident at the lake, and… no, no, he’s okay. He’s alright. He fell out of the boat but he’s okay now. The E-EMTs are giving him oxygen. Yeah, he’s… he’s awake. Carol-Ann, listen to me. He’s okay. He’s doing okay. Just… scared me.” His father’s fingers moved slowly through Isaac’s wet hair. “Yeah, I’ll tell him.” He held the phone away from his mouth. “Mom loves you, buddy.”
Isaac nodded, another cascade of tears rolling slowly down his cheeks. “L-love you, mom,” he rasped, and coughed harshly.

Streetlight - JJ Maybank
Request: Could you do a reader x jj where she’s a shy bookworm kook with no friends, jj is doing some work at her house and she finds him intimidating, he’s curious about her. He sees her getting picked on somewhere by some other kooks and he protects her somehow and comforts her. I dunno something like that, your so good at writing I know you can make this so much better that how I explained it ahah

The compromise was one night out doing normal teenage things to reassure your parents that you had friends and weren’t missing out on all the fun summer stuff people were supposedly doing this time of year and you could have the Grove Press first edition unrevised version of On The Road that someone was selling on ebay. It was a necessity, a collectible item that you would treasure for the rest of your life and it would look amazing in the glass cabinet that you’d gotten from ikea at the beginning of the year.
“One party and you can have the book.”
“I hate kook parties,” you tried to reason, eyes drifting passed your dad to the boy cutting your lawn. It was stupid and never in a million lightyears would anything ever happen but you had the smallest, tiniest, barely there crush on JJ Maybank, the pogue your dad hired to do odd jobs all summer. Clean the pool, mow the lawn, wash the cars, wash the boat, service the boat, service the cars, whatever he needed done JJ did it. For an extremely good deal, your dad definitely paid better than most. But you’d gotten used to seeing JJ around all summer. You hadn’t spoken to him but you knew of him and his friends. They threw epic parties.
“It’ll be fun.” Your dad replied.
The mower cut and JJ stopped to wipe his face on the shirt he’d taken off and hung over the handle of the mower. When he looked over your eyes went wide and you turned your attention back to your dad to pretend you weren’t just staring.
“It won’t be fun but fine.” You agreed. It was the only way to get that book and you wanted that book. The agreement was in place and your dad, satisfied with your decision to give into his compromise, switched gears from hassling you to focusing on lunch. He’d been claiming for the passed three days that he was in the mood for something pizza related but now he was debating between frozen pepperoni or frozen plain.
“Thoughts?” He asked, standing in front of the fridge, holding the two pizza boxes in hand.
You shrugged, “I don’t know, whatever you want?” You were working your way through a Whole Foods fruit salad and trying to organize your planner for the upcoming school year despite it only being the beginning of August.
Your dad nodded, laying them both down on the counter and turning the oven on to preheat before walking over to the French doors that lead out to the backyard.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting a second opinion.” He replied. He opened the door and shouted for JJ over the hum of the motor. When it finally cut out JJ turned to look at him, slightly startled.
“Yeah?”
“I’ve got some pizza for lunch, you want some?”
“Uh sure, is that okay?”
“Of course, I’m offering it.” Your dad replied, “should be a few more minutes, finish up and come on in.” He let the door close behind him as he walked back into the kitchen. You had turned in your seat to watch and you followed your dad’s movements back to the oven to put the pizzas in. “What? You complain about ‘kooks’, you don’t like those kids either.”
“No. I didn’t say anything.”
“He seems like a nice kid.”
“I’m sure he is.”
“He’s obviously not sitting at home alone all summer either.”
“I’m not sure what you want from me.” You replied, “don’t get in trouble but also you don’t have enough friends so find some’.”
“I just think you’re a great kid and people don’t get to see that. They think you’re snobby and rude when you don’t talk to them.”
“I’m not.” You insisted. You didn’t have a problem with JJ or his friends. It wasn’t that you didn’t talk to them because you thought you were above them. You just didn’t like talking to people.
“They don’t know that.”
“What happened to not catering to other people and their perception of me?”
“An important rule…one you’ve clearly mastered sitting here doing arts & crafts while other kids your age have jobs or go hang out with friends.” He pointed out.
“It’s my day planner. Sue me for wanting it to look nice.” You huffed.
The door opened and both of you looked over as JJ came in. You turned back around quickly and refocused your attention on copying out the class schedule you’d been emailed that morning to avoid looking at a shirtless JJ as your dad pointed him toward the bathroom to clean up for lunch.
“Schedule in being more sociable.” He teased.
“You’re so funny.”
JJ came back into the room and you sucked in a breath, already feeling like you were starting to clam up with him so close to you. Especially when he sat down beside you at the island. You pushed the plastic container of fruit more toward him, avoiding eye contact as you spoke.
“Fruit?” Not the most astounding of questions but you couldn’t help it, he always made you nervous.
-
The kook party was as awful as you had imagined it being in your head. People you suffered through at school crowded in the first floor of someone’s house while music blared through surround-sound speakers. The party overflowed to the pool and you managed to find a quiet spot away from everyone, sitting on a lounger reading by the light of a tiki torch that was a hazard without the gathering of rowdy, drunk, teens. Not everyone was a kook, you’d spotted JJ and his friends almost instantly, obviously here because of Sarah and Kiara but you ignored all of them in favour of finishing the book you’d been working your way through for the last week and a half. An biographical look at the life of JD Salinger through the eyes of his daughter, you’d been more than thrilled when you managed it find it at the little bookshop on the island. Better than having to go to the mainland and suffer through the idiots that worked at the only Barnes & Noble in a 25 mile radius. You’d been making headway too when the book was pulled out of your hands and someone yanked you out of your seat.
“Hey! Give me that back!” You tried to pull away from the person holding you but you couldn’t get loose. As you struggled Scarlett flipped through the first couple of pages in the book, pretending to read it.
“What is this dumb trash anyway? Dreamcatcher?” She laughed.
“Just give it back Scarlett!” You insisted, pulling against her boyfriend once more. Other kooks had gotten wind of what was happening and stopped to watch.
“You shouldn’t bring books anyway…accidents are bound to happen.” She said, grabbing a few pages in her hands and ripping them out, watching as they fell to the ground.
“Stop! Seriously, please stop.” You nearly cried as she continued to rip pieces of the book out.
A small break in the crowd had JJ pushing through with his friends to see what the commotion was. If he was being honest he didn’t know you very well despite working for your dad all summer. He had seen you around and you’d always been polite to him but never quite friendly. Kiara had told him you were shy though, and that you hated stuff like parties or crowds. This was torture already but now you were standing at the poolside, Scarlett’s boyfriend holding your arms so you couldn’t get away as Scarlett tossed the book into the pool.
“No! Fuck, are you kidding me!” You yanked against Scarlett’s boyfriend and he laughed.
“You wanna go in too?” He taunted, “go get it.” And he shoved you forward, both of them laughing as you tripped and fell into the pool.
JJ ran over without thinking, pulling off his shirt and jumping in the water. He grabbed your waist, helping you to the side of the pool as you sputtered out breaths, too upset by the whole ordeal that you hadn’t been able to focus on actually swimming. Kiara and John B helped you out of the pool while Sarah grabbed a towel for you, wrapping it around your shoulders as you sat on the edge with your legs still in the water.
Despite the warmth of the summer night you were shaking from the sudden chill that came from being wet. JJ pulled himself up on the concrete beside you, pulling his boots off and tossing them behind him before placing a hand on your back, rubbing up and down.
“Are you okay?” Sarah asked, kneeling down beside you.
You nodded, “I’ll be fine. Thanks, but I should go.”
As you started to stand up JJ stood too, grabbing his t-shirt and boots, casting one last look at the unsalvageable book Scarlett had tossed into the pool. “Let me walk you back?”
“You don’t have to, you should stay and enjoy the party.”
“I don’t want you walking home alone. It’s already pretty late.” He reasoned. It was already dark and your house was three blocks away. Not a bad walk but you were still soaked from the pool and wouldn’t hate the company, even if you did get tongue tied whenever JJ was around.
“Okay.”
You kept the towel around your shoulders as JJ led you away from the party, Scarlett shouting after you about your taste in pogues and Sarah telling her off. You were too in your head to say much even as you got away from the party and the blaring music and the crowded rooms. Walking through the streets with JJ, both of you barefoot and carrying your shoes. Soaked still from the pool, he had his shirt draped over one shoulder.
“I’m sorry.”
“What for?” JJ asked, glanced over at you.
“You having to dive in and get me out of the pool and walk me home. I ruined your night.”
He shrugged, “not really a fan of kook parties anyway, Sarah wanted to go so…”
You watched as he pulled a tin out of his pocket, rattling it for a moment before opening it up and smiling, holding it so you could see the blunts rolled up in colourful paper, a lighter and juul wedged in next to them. “Are they dry?”
“Yeah, this thing is waterproof. Bought it last year cause I always forget to empty my pockets when I surf.”
“Well I’m sure all the fish are happy. Probably trippin’ out.”
JJ laughed at the joke as he picked out a blunt and lit it up, “you want some?”
“No, I don’t smoke.”
“Do you care if I do?”
You shook your head. You were almost home anyway, then he could leave. Or were you supposed to ask him to stick around? Offer him some clothes from your dad and dry his wet shorts since he’d been nice enough to dive into the pool after you.
“So…you and Scarlett aren’t exactly friends huh?”
“I’m not exactly friends with a lot of people, Scarlett is just one of many.” You replied. “I was only there tonight cause my dad made me go…he says I need to socialise more.”
“You don’t really go out much.”
“I obviously have a good reason.” You said, looking down at your wet clothes.
“Not everyone’s like Scarlett.” He replied, blowing out smoke as he talked. “We’re going on the boat tomorrow, you should come.”
“Maybe.”
“I’d like it if you did.” He admitted, shrugging his shoulders in attempted indifference.
“Okay, but I’ll think I’ll stick to not swimming, if it’s all the same to you.”

Ezra goes on his first date
One of the kids (probably like Cal or Celia) feels like their parents done love them as much as they love the others / that they don’t get as much attention as they others
Obv u don’t need to use any of these prompts if u don’t want to, these are just some ideas
I loved your fic !!!
I Love You
Set in this universe, Nessian fourth child feels like she’s isn’t given the same amount of love her parents are showing her siblings and after a particularly bad day goes by, she bursts.
A/N: The ages: Ezra (23), Cal (19), Nora (14), Celia (12) and Andra (10). Nate is (18) and Iria (Emerie and Azriel’s firstborn) is (13).
It was hard to write this one, cause if one of my children came to me like this, telling me what Celia is going to say, I would probably kill myself you know. Hate these situations:(
Also, I’m definitely gonna write the other two too, cause they’re interesting and I think you all want to read about Ezra’s first date. So don’t worry, we’ll see them camping and struggling with love some more!
Enjoy!

"Cal, can you help me with my homework?" asked Celia as she entered the boys room.
Her brother didn't even spare her a glance, waving a hand in mid-air, "I can't right now Cece, I'm playing with Nate and I can't pause, sorry." then burst out laughing at something his cousin had said to him through his earbuds. He cast her a quick glance over his shoulder, "Maybe when I finish."
The girl huffed, muttering a don't worry and closed the door behind her. She walked down the hallway, towards her room and Nora's. She didn't bother knocking, but froze in the doorway, staring at her sister with hopeful eyes. She knew she wouldn't find help there either when she heard her say Iria's name into the phone's microphone.
She could feel that she might be about to let out a scream of frustration.
She was about to leave the room when Nora noticed her, "Iria wait a second," she put a hand on the phone, smiling at Celia, "Do you want anything? I can leave the room if you need to study in silence," she offered her.
Celia shook her head, "I can't do this geometry problem." she said furrowing her brow as she looked at the strange figure on the sheet her math teacher had assigned her. She looked up at Nora and she had a bored look on her face. Celia had confirmation of what she had thought as soon as she walked in. Before her sister could find an excuse to escape that task, she smiled and said, "Don't worry, I'll do it myself."
Nora didn't even try to retort and resumed talking to her cousin, yelling at Celia to close the door when she left.
"Yeah, I'll close the door for you," she muttered to herself.
She didn't want to go to her mom and ask for help with her homework because she knew it would end with one of them yelling, but she had no other choice. Huffing for the millionth time, she headed downstairs, mentally ready to face an intense math session with her mom.
When she entered the kitchen, Nesta was leaning on her chair with her knees and half lying on the table, holding a yellow pencil and coloring one of the suns on Andra's exercise book.
Her sister was the first to see her, "Hi." she said in a flat tone.
Celia snickered, thinking "we're in the same boat sis". Doing homework with mom had always been tiring, whether it was math to solve or simple drawings to color, Nesta had the ability to squeeze their little brains to their last nerve.
Cassian had always told them that one day they would thank her, but Celia hadn't reached that moment yet. She was sure Ezra, who was finishing college, hadn't thanked her yet either for making him maintain that level of consistency in his studies.
"Mom," she called hesitantly, "could you help me with this problem?"
Andra glared at her, frowning, "She's helping me."
Celia knew she didn't mean it in a bad way, she knew she was probably just as tired as she was at that moment. After all, it was seven o'clock on a Sunday night for everyone, and if Andra had found herself finishing studying so late too, it was because she too had been given too much homework. She ignored her, waiting for Nesta to speak.
When he didn't answer her, Celia pushed with more annoyance in her voice, "Mom."
Nesta's head snapped toward her, and even this time, Celia knew the answer would be no. The weariness clear in her features. Nesta closed her eyes, scratching a temple with the tip of her pencil, "Can't you ask one of your siblings?"
"Nora and Cal are busy," she let her know, "I don't know where Ezra is."
Andra pointed her to the back door, "He's out with Dad, they're working in the gazebo."
Celia nodded, "Thank you." Nesta gave her a tired smile and then went back to coloring in the sun.
She clutched the book and notebook to her chest as she pushed the door open and the cold outside made her shiver. She could hear the hoarse laughter and low voices of her dad and brother, but she couldn't see them anywhere.
She stepped barefoot into the grass and wiggled her fingers through the blades of grass and then there was silence and Celia was suddenly afraid. If she turned around she could see Nesta and Andra at the table, but in front of her there was only darkness and silence, until a loud bang came from the gazebo and then she heard Cassian cursing, before Ezra burst out laughing.
She grinned, tiptoeing towards the two men.
As soon as she moved the curtain that was the door to the gazebo, a dart flew past her head and she jumped back, eyes wide. She felt her heart in her throat.
"Celia!" had shouted Ezra, sprinting toward her. His eyes, too, were full of fear and he had grabbed her by the arms. Cassian immediately behind him stroked her hair, checking to make sure he hadn't poked her in the face. They both let go a breath of relief when they saw that she was okay.
"Cutie you have to be careful when you come in here, you know that," her dad told her with a carefree smile on his face, "If I caught you, mommy would skin me alive."
All three cackled, Ezra pulling himself up and removing the darts from the board.
"Did you need anything?" asked Cassian.
Celia nodded, remembering the real reason she had gone there, "I can't do this problem-" she started to open the notebook, but Ezra interrupted her.
"Dad and I are just finishing up fixing this actually," he told her with a apologetic grimace, "Could you wait a half hour?"
Celia looked at Cassian hopefully, but her dad was already back handling tools and nails.
She turned to her brother, "But you were playing darts." she said impassively.
Ezra shrugged, "We were just taking a few minutes off, we've been working for hours." then turned to Dad, "Where's the wire?"
Cassian pointed to a spot on the other side of the gazebo and Celia took that gesture as her cue to leave them alone again.
"Nevermind." she whispered, closing the notebook and leaving the gazebo.
She eyed the table at which they ate breakfast every summer morning, thinking that if she started studying there maybe she would die of hypothermia and finally someone would deign to help her. Laughing at how extra she could be at times, she walked back into the house, passing her mom and Andra in silence and heading back to Cal's room. She was going to wait for him to finish the game and then force him to solve the problem for her.
She threw open the door and Cal let out a shriek, startling her.
"God, Cece you scared the shit out of me." he breathed, bringing a hand to his chest, finishing pulling on his pants.
Celia furrowed her brow, "Weren't you playing with Nate?"
Cal nodded absentmindedly, looking around, "See my wallet?"
She pointed it out to him. "Where are you going? You said you'd help me," she said in a whiny tone.
"I said maybe," he smiled slyly at her, "and Raina called me and I'm spending the night at her place." with that he turned and opened the drawer, pulling out two aluminum foil envelopes. As soon as Celia realized what they were, she brought her hands to her eyes.
"Gee," she sighed, then turned around shaking her head, "I didn't need to see that."
Without looking at him, she raised a hand, smiling tightly at the empty space in front of her, "See you tomorrow, have fun."
Cal chuckled as he walked past her and darted down the stairs, "Sure will. See you tomorrow."
Celia shook her head again and then again, trying to erase the image of- she walked back down the hall, opening up the door to her room.
Nora in a completely different position was still talking on the phone and when she saw her she rolled her eyes, telling Iria to wait yet again. She turned on her stomach, raising an eyebrow, "What is it?"
Why is everyone so grumpy today?
Celia was fed up with that attitude and raised her arms to the sky, "Nothing, whatever."
Then they stared at each other for a few seconds and Nora nodded her chin, "Could you please go out? I'm talking to Iria on the phone and-"
"This is my room, too," Celia retorted, pointing out the obvious.
Nora huffed, leaning her head back, "Yes and I'm asking if I can please talk to our cousin in private."
Celia was getting even more nervous. "If you would help me with this problem I could go mind my own business in the living room and I wouldn't have to bother you every five minutes anymore."
Nora stood up, grabbing her by the arm and pushing her out of the room, "I'll help you when I'm done talking on the phone."
Celia didn't even have time to realize that her sister had literally just thrown her out of the room that the door behind her had already been closed. She wanted to go back in and throw herself at Nora and work it out the way they used to work it out when they were kids, when they could still hit each other if they fought - not that their parents ever let them go beyond the first slap or hair pull.
She walked into the bathroom in the middle of their rooms to see where Cassian and Ezra stood, but from the second floor it was impossible to see inside the gazebo.
She went to Andra's room so she wouldn't risk running into condom wrappers and having to breathe the testosterone-smelling air of her brothers' room and sat down on the bed. She opened the notebook on her lap, rereading the problem statement aloud.
"A rectangular parallelepiped has basic dimensions that measure-" then she stopped.
It was pointless. She couldn't figure out what formulas to apply to calculate what was asked of her in the fourth question. Rereading the text wasn't going to help.
She brought her hands to her hair.
Why is this so hard?
She heard Nora laughing down the hall and felt anger sizzle under her skin.
Ever since she'd gotten the phone for her fourteenth birthday, there hadn't been a night that was one in which she hadn't called Iria. And it had only been a few months since she'd started high school, but Celia didn't understand how those two things had managed to change her sister like that.
She knew Nora still cared about her, but it was getting harder and harder to spend time with her, and Cal was always out with Raina and the twins and it was possible that she didn't see him for days at a time. Although that last part had become an occurrence in recent years.
Nesta had explained to her that it was normal, that they were just growing up and there was nothing to worry about, that they'd get closer once she got older too, but it had hurt Celia to lose Cal in many ways and now she was just scared that the same thing would happen with Nora.
She had nothing against spending her free time with Andra, but she was still little and still liked to play with dolls and Celia would rather hang herself than pretend to be a Doctor Peluche one more time.
She chuckled again this time, imagining herself announcing her death to her parents after her little sister asked her to play.
Then she heard Andra scream with happiness and run up the stairs. She was just in time to get out of the bed and out of the room that her sister was at the top of the stairs.
"I finished my homework!" she yelled, balling up her fists in the air.
Celia smiled at her, "Great."
Then Andra sagged, "Now I'm going to go take a victory nap."
"You've earned it." she walked past her as she yawned and headed down the stairs two steps at a time.
"Mom!" she called skipping the last three, "Can you help me now?"
Nesta made a frustrated sound, turning to her with a bag of frozen green beans in her hand.
"I just finished with Andra, is there any way we could think about this after dinner?"
Celia was about to start crying, but nodded anyway. She went into the living room when her mom resumed cooking, turning on the TV and putting on a channel where they showed how food is made.
When her dad and Ezra came back into the house they were so dirty that Nesta sent them straight to get washed up with the threat of not letting them sit down if they didn't smell flowery and clean.
Celia would have gone along with her mom, adding a sassy retort to make it even more dramatic, but at that moment she couldn't speak.
Cassian had passed behind the couch to go to the bathroom and shower, ruffling her hair and leaving a kiss on her head.
Even there, Celia didn't respond or say any "I love you too" back.
She didn't realize until a few minutes later that she wasn't really watching the show, and when she felt she was about to start crying - from too much accumulated stress and frustration throughout the day - she decided she needed to find a place where she could blow off steam.
Her room was apparently off-limits, Andra's was occupied and she couldn't hide in either her parents' or her brothers' room because both Ezra and her dad would go there to get dressed after their showers.
This only added to all the bad things of the day and on top of all the crap, she knew her mom was going to go to sleep right after dinner. When Nesta was this tired there was no way she was going to be able to stay up a minute longer and even if she could convince her it would just be hell.
Doing math with a calm and rested Nesta was already a nightmare on its own, she didn't want to think about what it would be like to do it with a cranky and tired Nesta.
She silently opened the door that led into the tavern, where the brothers normally spent their Saturday nights with their cousins and friends. The girls still weren't allowed to go down there when everyone was there, and Celia was looking forward to high school so she would get a free pass to attend their nights.
That is, if they would accept her.
She closed the door carefully behind her and ran down the stairs, turning on the light first.
She threw herself on the couch and then hugged her legs, sobbing once. And then again and again until a liberating cry was wracking her body.
She didn't know if it was just the math assignment she couldn't do or if it bothered her to see how much everyone didn't need her at that moment. Andra had mom and Ezra had dad and Nora and Cal had their respective friends and Celia… she felt so lonely right then.
She sobbed particularly loudly and clamped her mouth shut with her hand when she heard her father's footsteps pass by the tavern door. She didn't want him to hear her, it would worry him for nothing.
Yes, it was just because she couldn't get a stupid math problem right. She was overreacting.
She didn't need her parents. Or her brothers.
Or her sister for that matter.
She was sure all of her classmates were getting the exercise done.
She loosened her arms from around her legs and lay down on the couch, closing her eyes and clutching one of the pillows to her chest. It had a vague earthy smell to it, but it smelled like Cal too, and it angered the girl even more as she grabbed a corner of the pillow and threw it across the room, yelling not too loudly.
She didn't know how long she'd been down there, but when Nesta called the family to let them know dinner was ready, Celia sprang to her feet. She pulled the sleeves of her shirt over her hands and ran them over her face to remove the residue of the crying in frantic movements.
She took three deep breaths and then walked slowly up the stair
s. She opened the door just as Ezra walked into the living room and their eyes met.
She immediately lowered her head, so he wouldn't see her face, but her brother put a hand on her shoulder, "Lia..." the silent request to look at him clear as day.
"What?" she replied too surly. She cursed in her head when she noticed her brother stiffen. It was as if she could see his surprised expression.
So much for playing dumb.
"Are you okay?" he asked, then squeezed her shoulder, "Why were you downstairs?"
She moved to escape his grasp, then ran a hand over her face, huffing, "I was looking for something." she replied evasively, trying to make her way to the kitchen. Ezra grabbed her wrist, spinning her around, at which point Celia was forced to look at him.
Ezra had a conflicted expression, somewhere between angry and worried, "What happened? Why are you crying?" he asked, in a tone that didn't allow for a non-answer.
Celia remained silent, her brows knitted in a frown as she tried to swallow the knot that was forming in her throat.
Perhaps he had spoken too loudly, because Cassian's figure appeared in the kitchen doorway, "Who's crying?"
Celia looked towards her dad and it only took a second of seeing him for the crying to return, only harder.
Cassian's face turned completely as he moved Ezra from in front of his daughter and hugged her, lifting her off the ground. Celia wrapped her arms around her father's neck, hiding her face between the crook of his neck and his shoulder, and only sobbed louder as Cassian's hand began massaging her back in circular motions.
She didn't care if she would be thirteen in a few weeks. She didn't care that her father was rocking her like he used to when she was little, she just wanted him to hold her close.
She wrapped her legs around her dad's waist and heard Cassian take a shaky breath, "Ezra why don't you go ahead? We'll be right there."
Celia didn't see or hear her brother's response, but she was grateful to her dad when he moved to the couch, settling down and bringing her to him. She pressed herself tighter against him.
"Lia, what happened?" he whispered in her ear. This only made her sob more loudly, "Ssh, cutie," he murmured as the little girl's breathing became more erratic, "It's okay."
"Celia." her mom's voice made her sit up and Nesta was there, who with only a few steps was behind the couch. She'd seen Andra and Nora's heads pop up from the kitchen as well, but Ezra had called them back and they were gone immediately.
Nesta took a seat next to Cassian, her arms outstretched toward her daughter, but her gaze fixed on her husband's. Celia launched herself at her mother, but kept an arm around her father's neck and Cassian took her hand, squeezing it in his.
The child's tears had soaked his pajama shirt and Nesta's chest tightened. She brushed Celia's hair until she had a clear view of her daughter's face, "What's wrong?"
"I have-" she sobbed, "I had to solve a problem and I couldn't and no one-" every breath she tried to take was broken by a sob. She sniffled, "And then Nora kicked me out of the room and Cal- Cal didn't want to help me and he left and you were-" she ran the hand that wasn't clasped in Cassian's over her face, "You were helping Andra." then she turned to her dad and started crying again, "And then you and Ezra sent me away."
Nesta felt tremendous guilt and was about to apologize to her, for ignoring her, but then Celia said something that completely broke her heart.
"You don't love me like you do the others," she sobbed into her mom's chest.
"Oh, Lia." murmured Cassian, in a hurt tone. He slipped a hand between Nesta and his daughter's stomach and pulled her away from her mother, forcing the woman's arms off Celia.
Cassian sat her back down on his lap and looked into her eyes, leaning down just enough to be at the same height as her. His brow was furrowed and she could see how upset those few words had made him.
"That's absolutely not true." he whispered in a firm tone, watching the redness of his little girl's face, the tears that continued to fall undisturbed.
Nesta stroked her hair, "Your father is right." she added.
"You are all on exactly the same level. There's no such thing as loving one child more than the other," he repeated, "It's not possible."
Celia took more shaky breaths, struggling to speak, "Cal and Nora hate me now."
Nesta felt bad for her little girl. She didn't dare imagine how long she had kept those doubts to herself, couldn't imagine how she could think those things. How she had let one of her children feel that way without even noticing.
"Cal could never hate you and you know it. He loves you too much. Exactly like me and Mom and Nora too, even though it might not seem like it." said Cassian. Then he ran a thumb under her eyes, wiping her cheeks. "I'm sorry if we made you feel left out today, that wasn't our intention, okay?"
Celia nodded, but resumed crying.
"We're a family, we all love each other so much, but we're also numerous," Nesta tried to explain, "It may happen sometimes that no one is available to help you at that moment, but that doesn't mean they don't love you or care about you less than the day before."
Cassian squeezed her hips, "Why didn't you tell us this before?" he asked her, later clarifying, "That you were feeling this way."
Celia shrugged, resting her hands on her daddy's chest, just as she did when she was little.
"I don't want it to get to a point where you can't hold back anymore and you have to hide to cry, okay?" said Cassian to her. Nesta looked at him and saw that his eyes were glazed over. She placed a hand on his leg, but the man's attention didn't shift from his daughter's face. "If you feel that Mama and I and anyone in this house are misbehaving with you, you come tell us and we'll talk about it, without the need to yell at each other and fight." he gave her a hesitant smile. Then he wrapped her up and pulled her against him, kissing her temple, "Please don't think I love you any less just because I'm a stupid, clueless big man who can't manage his time optimally, okay?"
Celia nodded against his neck, starting to play with the end of his hair strands.
"And I'm sorry if I made you think that for even a second," he closed his eyes as he whispered those words to her.
"I love you dad." said Celia in a muffled voice.
Cassian held her tighter to his chest, "I love you cutie."
Nesta cleared her throat, laying a hand on her daughter's back, "I'm sorry if I didn't pay enough attention to you today too and if I sent you out of the kitchen," she murmured, urging her to look at her. Celia broke away from Cassian, getting off his lap and launching herself at her mother, who caught her and stifled a laugh at the sudden weight.
God, she was growing up so fast, too.
"I love you, Lia." she whispered to her, "Don't ever doubt that, please."
"I love you mom."
They stayed rocking their baby girl for a few more minutes, then Cassian made a joke about the food that was getting cold in their plates, and all three of them got up from the couch and walked into a particularly quiet kitchen.
Nesta took a seat next to Andra and kissed her forehead as she took a green bean from the serving plate with her small hand.
Cassian glanced at all his children present and blew out a cough, "Maybe we should talk about eavesdropping as well."
Ezra turned to Celia, who was wiping her face with her napkin despite the fact that it was already dry, "Sorry for making you feel that way." he smiled at her, "I love you."
Celia nodded, focusing on her food.
"I want to apologize too," Nora said more softly, playing with the edge of the tablecloth. "I shouldn't have kicked you out of the room like that, and if you want to later I'll help you with the problem."
Her sister looked at her and opened her mouth, then closed it, then opened it again, "I would love to."
"Sorry." said Andra, with a rather cute frown on her face. She probably didn't quite understand what had happened, but Celia appreciated either way. Even as she gave her the widest smile as she said, "I love you."
Celia looked at everyone at the table, swallowing noisily, "I love you."
She would talk to Cal another time.
They ate between jokes and pranks and after dinner they all jumped on their parents' bed, cuddling until they all fell asleep there. Cassian and Nesta were forced to give up their room for the night, taking refuge in the guest room instead, but not before showing their children how much infinite love they felt for each of them.

Parings→ peter Parker x reader
Warnings→slowburn, fake dating, fluff
Summary→when you lie to your mom about having a boyfriend before vactation peter steps in to help. But being in a fake relationship isnt as easy as you thought. especially not easy when you two have feelings for one another.
A/n→ here is part two of seasick! @spectacularlyspidey made me this lovely moodboard, I love Ren 🥰 I hope you guys enjoy it and I’m going to try and post it more often if that is what you guys want💗
Tumblr media
Toothbrush, Peter, you need your toothbrush.” May helps him pack. She seemed more excited than peter. Peter placed his clothes into bens old suitcase as if it was a chore. Hes scared, beyond scared. What if your family hates him, what if they think hes less of what they expected, what if they catch on? All the ideas and scenarios ran through his head.
“May, i've got it. I'm 19 not 14.” he reminded her and she pouted. She knew the whole plane, he had nothing to hide from her Anyways.
“You know that you can still say no.” she comes over to run a hand through Peter's hair. She knew when Peter had a crush, she always did. Although normally he'd get scared of going on a field trip with one or a study date, never a summer vacation.
“She needs me to do this. I told her i would and were setting boundaries on the plane so when we get there its not weird.” he told her and she hummed.
“I know you really like her, like more than a friend. I have a tingle too.” she teases and peter scrunches his face. “But think this can be a start, you maybe could start something here.” she kisses his forehead before leaving him in his rom to finish packing. He looks over at his phone to see the time, he sees how you’ll be at his house soon and picking him up for the airport. The airport where you'd meet your family in Florida where you’d go out to sea.
He shuts the suitcase and listens to the sound of it zipping up before flopping on his bed letting the time run out.
-
8 hours, it was an 8 hour flight filled with anxiety and fear. You had both agreed on a list. A list of things to do around your family
-forehead kisses are allowed(kisses on the lips not necessary unless needed)
-holding hands as often as we can
-snuggling up to one another
-going places together like the pool or restaurant
-pet names
-make up stories about each other
-hands always on one another
That was about it. That's all you two had to do and you'd keep it up for a week. Then when the two of you get home things go back to normal. Normal. That word hurt peters ears. Normal meant there were no real feelings and he'd have to let go of you.
“I-i can hold your bags.” he offered as you two got off the plane. He wore his Columbia hoodie with sweats, probably not the best option for landing in Florida but he was so nervous.
You give him a warm smile and nod. You were nervous too, for almost all the same reasons as peter. You wished you could have just taken ned, ned or another friend who was just seen as your friend. Someone you didn't have to think so much about kissing. Someone you didn't have to think about pretending to hold. Someone you didn't have to worry catching feelings for.
“Wait,” you stop him and he looks at you with soft eyes. “My mom is really....touchy. She loves hugging and she might kiss your cheek. It’s nothing to intentionally make you uncomfortable but i'm really sorry in advance.” you warn him.
He nods as from a distance your mom shouts your name. She's wearing a sundress and sandals, ready for a vacation. Your dad is next to her smiling ready to hug you, now he knew it was real. All of it was now real. If your mom and dad intimidated him he was scared to see the rest of your family.
“Oh sweetheart i've missed you so much, ugh New York is such a small yet big state. We wished college did hog you so much.” she kisses your cheeks.
“Mom, dad, this is my boyfriend...Peter, the one I've been telling you about.” you hold his arm and he's already smiling and going in to shake hands. Your mom takes him for a hug and gets pink lipgloss on his cheek.
He sees how much you look like her, the hair, the eyes, the smile that's so contagious, but the personalities are completely different. She was bubbly and happy all over the place while you, you were a little more reserved and only showed the good side to your friends. Save the best parts of you for the best people.
“Ugh i was starting to think she'd never get one, especially not one so handsome and smart.” she holds his arms giving them a squeeze. “Wow he works out too you can really tell.” You quickly take him back before he gets uncomfortable.
“Mom…” you warn and she scoffs.
“Sweetheart, you know I'm teasing. Your sisters are already boarded and waiting so we can leave when you two are ready.” sisters. You never told him about sisters. He didn't even know you had any siblings. He thought you were always an only child. You never talked about any siblings or really family except your mom and dad and occasionally your aunt.
But he can tell by your facial expressions that you were already dreading it more than him, dredging sisters but he didn't know why. He wasn't going to push it either. By the shift in your body he knew it was best to just question when you two were alone.
He willingly followed your family into a cab where you four set off for a week of one of the hardest masks he had to put on, the mask of pretending to love you when he really did but could never tell you.
-
Never being on a cruise ship before he had no idea what to expect. His bare knowledge being the titanic—which did not help his fear of the ocean—even for the smartest kid, normally, he didn’t know much about boats. He never even considered himself to be on one, until last summer he never even thought he’d be in Europe for his senior year of highschool. That’s how he had to think of this, Europe. Semi-relaxing, regular peter, Europe. This was a once and a lifetime opportunity for him to be on a cruise with no Spider-Man activity, No stress, nothing but the sun on his skin.
“So we eat dinner at 7pm, you kids can get all settled in...maybe find yourself at the spa or the pool. Don’t be shy to order room service, ugh the boy is handsome but skinny.” Your mom comments once again. You give her eyes and a groan as you follow her down the hall to your room. “Oh please, you eat too, you're starting to lose your color.” She picks up your arm and you take it back.
He didn’t think the teasing was that bad, sure the appearance comments were too soon but he thought it was all a part of her bubbly personality. May teases all of them to eat when they’re over. May has teased all of them but always in a nice way.
When Peter dated Gwen—his ex girlfriend—last year she was the same. Always telling Peter about his appearance but he never really cared what she had to say. He just really needed someone at the time to move on from you.
“Here is your room, you kids have fun.” She hands you the card and kisses your cheek. “Wear the sundress your sister picked out, don’t be late.” She warned and walked down the hall. Only a few hours in and you wished you would’ve made some crap excuse about having a late final or actually telling the truth.
You two enter the room and Peter is shocked. It’s a gorgeous beach themed room. If he were a child he would already be jumping on the bed and touching everything. You seem to just drop your bags on the floor and immediately go to the bathroom. He leaves you be, taking in the beauty of the room, the California king bed, the wall hung T.V. The view of the ocean that made him slightly nervous but he didn’t mind. There was a dress on the bed, the sundress your mom wanted you to wear.
“Oh fuck.” You rub your face seeing that there’s the one bed. You thought maybe she’d at least use some sense and get two beds, that or a two roomed hotel. “I’m sorry pete, I thought she would maybe get us two rooms or—“
Another thing he seemed to notice was how money didn’t seem to be an issue for your family yet you never seemed to come off as well off. You lived in a small apartment like peter, your clothes were mostly thrifted or old, you ate ramen about three times a week and if it wasn’t that it was cheap pizza. Just like the rest of the group. You never came off as rich, it shocked him to even hear about a cruise, it shocked him even more that you could just say about how they could’ve gotten two rooms on a ship.
“It’s a California king,” he gestures. “We’ll fit without touching each other.” He calms you with a soft smile seeing how stressed you were.
“You’re not too scared of ships are you?” You ask him remembering how he said something about being afraid of the water.
“Well...Uh...no but yes, it makes me nervous but—“ your hand places itself over peters for comfort and he freezes up. You notice and quickly take your hand away.
“It won’t feel like anything trust me, you don’t feel the ship rock or anything. It’s not the titanic.” You reminded him as you picked up your phone and looked at the time. You two had plenty of time to get yourself ready.
“So….” he clasp his hands together and you look over to him. “For dinner how should I act?” He questions. You’re getting comfortable in the bed already while he’s still scared to touch it.
“Just be Peter, um...maybe a hand around my shoulder at one point or hand holding? Just like our list said. Really sell it. They’re gonna ask a lot of questions of how we met and stuff like that but I can do all of them if you want.” You tell him and he nods.
“Right,” he responded thinking the best thing to do was just be peter, the peter you knew, not the peter who was totally in love with you. “Just be peter.”
And that’s all he had to do.

CONTINUED FROM!!
Nose is back to the Zhaang grindstone! @theboyfrommakapu let me borrow their tough little nut Mizuki, and as 2021 can and should be the year of Dad!Zhao (and Flame was instrumental in the effort ✨)...
Aang bent the cord around his finger, waiting, in much moroseness, for the line to answer.
“Chief Beifong speaking.” A soft chuckle peppered the other end. “Did you know I’ve started tapping into the wires? Copper, silver - they run all over the place, tingle a little when someone flips a switch. I can almost tell you’re nervous, Twinkle Toes. Quit fiddling with the cord.”
How did she...?
Nevermind. Toph’s abnormally dense interconnection with the world would prove useful another time.
“I...” Aang cut to brass tacks. “I lost him.”
“What?” -a creaking desk, then a stern officer folding over the cheeky old- “When? His bending’s diddly-squat in the surface world. Isn’t that what you told me?”
“I know, I know. It was-”
“Don’t expect my men to find your prized fossil and return it to the Zei Museum. You’re the one who begged me to keep this under wraps.”
He squeezed in a smile, hoping to feign confidence. “I wouldn’t pain you with the paperwork, Toph. Besides, it’s out of our hands. Bumi’s handling it. Well, he worded it differently, but... he promised the search would be short. In the meantime, just - keep an eye out, will you?”
“Aang.” The voice turned from scratchy to uncomfortably firm, clear as if she were right behind him. “You said he wasn’t dangerous. Now you’ve got top-notch eel hounds on his scent.”
You had better expect a visit, were her last regards. The line snapped shut, leaving him with a limp cord and heavier phone than when he’d dailed.
Aang shifted, lips tightly pursed before the air was sucked out of him in a groan. “Monkey feathers...”
Trees.
For a handful of miles offshore where he’d dragged his weight off a humble boat, lower half caked, gritty, and buried to the soles in sand - trees.
It was a relief.
The city was a noose. Like he could sense its tailspin out of trajectory as the safe haven of the world risen from the four nations… now a reeking, hot swamp.
Not of smell - of lost souls. The indebted, distressed, heartbroken, restless. Even a switch sent ripples. He heard enough from his own mind.
Climbing over a rock as the wind rustled and sun warmed his hands (oh, how the sun felt on his skin) Zhao found his urgency suddenly depleted. He was well inland, well surrounded to muffle the thick of civilization.
The sun’s touch grew cooler by the time he sorted out the dissonance; someone had been weeping - the lights were too bright - traffic had blared and their shrieking carried over. It was a noise he expected to see printed in the… called the… newspaper, if Zhao could be so bothered.
He finally stirred when a faint ringing sharpened to a painful, yet balanced point - smoothed to exude an artful control. In the whirlwind settled one thought:
Fire.
He fumbled out of the way (apparently so inert that a mistaken frog squirrel scampered off his chest) just as an arrow planted in his sleeve.
Zhao yanked it out on the third tug. Before his senses were aligned he was sprinting for cover, because if nothing kicked in, training did - the fletching provided the revered accuracy and spin of the fire swan… to the extent of his years, found nowhere else.
If only training brokered with his physical state and found some hidden reservoir of adrenaline. Compared to feet gracing the treetops and sailing within range in seconds, he was a leaf trying to escape a stone. His shoes dunked in creek water, turned nonsense corners to bewilder the immovable upon him. Arrows plunged in Zhao’s trail - the first one hadn’t pierced him.
It could have, easily.
So, at least one person in the world preferred him alive-
The denounced admiral lost his head start; his ears pricked at the ripping of a seam before his back lodged to a tree. “No—!” He was their pin cushion before he could recognize the grate of bark.
A group of less than dozen descended from the canopy, their focus as deathly still as Zhao was forced to hold - nocked like the bow, even now. Then the leader swung down in front of him, ten steps short of her squad.
Lithe. Tightly bound hair. Unsettlingly familiar eyes.
“Pathetic. No wonder you were the last candidate for the Natural Leadership Award.” The what? “It went to Admiral Tung - he couldn’t start a fire without his hands.”
He must have stared in a way that made their distance transparent. Her frown aged her, too much.
“What’s the blue smear on your forehead?”
No answer. The archer struck him over the temple, hard; the resulting darkness wasn’t as merciful as to be dreamless.
… Two hours before the commander made landfall, he served (against his will) as a conduit for the last ten decades, lobes picked clean.
The encampment was secluded, scattered in the trees with stuffed straw rooted in rows. Arrows that had pierced already split targets, embers in the dark where game was strung over pits. Somewhere over the treetops was the crash of indolent waves.
Zhao would have made his peace with the circumstances if it weren’t for the rope affixing him to a tent’s post and the incessant girl.
An ambush squad; the leader seemed to be convinced Zhao was so ancient that he hailed from Szeto’s time. Or she was mocking him. At this point, he had a sinking feeling he wasn’t as well-preserved as the Avatar led him to believe. The Spirit World reject’s head pounded. How was he tracked this far?
“Were you eligible for the land grants after Minister Szeto’s relief fund was exceeded by thousands of ban? Did you move to the islands? Do you have family there still?”
“I’ve never-”
Her brows settled knowingly. “Ah, so you were one of the needy who joined the warring clans to survive. Did Szeto show you mercy? Did he use Firelord Yosor’s stamp and feed your hungry for months?”
“No! I was-”
“You’ve never stood in his presence?”
“I haven’t, I don’t plan to, and unless you have some sort of incentive I’ll resist throwing myself at the Avatar’s feet and begging him to contact his however-many-past-lives so you’ll shut your mouth.”
“Ai,” her lip twitched, “Grandfather Zuko did that already. Szeto was busy tallying entries in the spirit world on his famous abacus. Did you know? It was carved from-”
“I did not!” He snapped, and until his thoughts caught up with him, Zhao was just short of fuming. He heard it then - and balked.
“G… Grandfather?” His eyes flickered, the weight of the crown steeping the room like a tea prepared with lead. The archer blinked innocently, folded forward on her stoop. “Who are you?” Zhao demanded.
“I think you know.” She stood up, stretching idly. He was no threat - not to the Yuyan, not to a princess. “You talk in your sleep. Almost confessed to putting thorns in Uncle Aang’s shoes. Other than that, dragons, Firelords… my father. How do you know so much?” The archer muttered to the side, “and so little…”
Maybe he should run from the island more often. Next time he could shake hands with the president. “I didn’t- wasn’t aware… you were…”
But he did see things, didn’t he? For the same reason he’d fled the city, and the Avatar’s tour of the park backfired before he could point out his favorite birds in the trees.
Zhao, at least, could figure where he’d seen those eyes.
The same boy who reached out when he could have let him fall - the same old man who’d tried to guide him from a spiraling path. Wise in ways the all-powerful Firelord was not. Strangely, his lips moved on their own.
“He does care.” Zhao’s arms were chafed and mosquitos had taken to vintage blood like a honeypot - what did he care, for one? “You don’t have to believe me. I’m not the Knowledge Spirit - now that one was a pain in the ass - but you heard it from me, and I know what I know. He… is fond. Of you.”
Finally… a moment of quiet. Though it pressed like a blunt tip to his pulse.
Her resemblance wasn’t striking, not in the sense of royalty Zhao had known. The girl’s hair was lighter, her features sharp to a gentler fault - and no one capable of the royals’ level of skill would choose a bow over raw fists.
“Who?” The princess’s voice turned severe.
The bygone soldier blinked. “I think you know.”
She looked affronted, or twice as curious - stormed from the tent with the blazing corona of esteem and shaken pride dimming like her steps. The Yuyan were rumored to be silent as the spirits… Suppose some things made you mortal, made inescapably of flesh and burden.
Ages had passed since Zhao was in such a presence. He’d forgotten the family of condensed sunlight - forgotten his mission and how low he bowed at their feet.
He almost unconsciously straightened when she re-entered later with ease, a mask pinned tightly over the face that beamed in recitation of Szeto’s legacy. What’s wrong? Zhao wanted to mouth (before recoiling at his own instinct).
A tall, middle-aged man bolstered by boots and a shining coat ducked in suit. Instead of lowering a distasteful greeting on a lowly captive, he cracked a wide smile. “Got your steps in?”
“I haven’t seen Dad in such knots to find someone since Kya lost her lop-eared bunny. Hell-raisers,” he chuckled, “what can you do but keep an eye on them?”
The princess’s eyes narrowed, twin points tensed on a bowstring by themselves. Zhao swallowed.
“Uh… your daughter - was good company.”
Commander, Firelord - he acted like neither! - slid his hands in his pockets as men brushed past, hauling Zhao off his legs as blood rushed to receive him. A sideways wink was his answer, and while it baffled the Yuyan’s catch of the day, it bounced right off his child. How couldn’t she know she was adored? The commander gave off delight in overwhelming, sunny waves.
The Avatar’s son?
… Made sense.
Zhao’s hand slipped from under the soldiers’ hold, motioning with his fingers; a short goodbye, if anything. The young archer didn’t so much as glance over.
To think he’d set out to find quiet… He wanted to seek out the loudest voice he’d met since.

The Beginning
Alright, I wanna talk about the Hp au, so all my my followers are going to be subjected to another post about it!
Today, I think I’m gonna talk about some plot points for what the beginning of the ‘First Book’ would be! (From the beginning up to the collecting of the wand)
First, a few fun facts to get you interested, though
- The first fic’s title would be The Brothers Who Lived (Maybe, I’m not too sold on any title yet)
- It would mainly be told with Dewey at the focus
- Though this doesn’t mean his story would be an exact replica of Harry Potters
- Specifically, he lives with Gosalyn and Drake, who love him a lot
- Though his stay at Hogwarts would be a different story
Caught your interest? Well, continue reading under the cut for more ;) (be warned: it’s a bit long)
-  We start off with Drake Mallard going about town
- He keeps running into weird people saying that ‘She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is dead!’
- This confuses him but he’s seen weirder, they don’t seem to be hurting anyone, so let them be odd, as far as he’s concerned
- He ends up running into this old man, who strikes him as one of those weird people. yet he seems a little sadder than the rest of them
- He is holding a bundle in his arms
- Drake talks to the old man, and he seems nice enough
- They part ways, and later Drake the bundle the old man was carrying in his kitchen
- He opens the bundle to reveal a one year old child, with a note that says ‘His name is Dewey Duck’
- He knows he should contact the authorities, and try to find that old man, but until then, he’ll take care of the kid.
- Fast forward about ten years (specifically about a week before then) and Dewey and his sister Gosalyn are enjoying their summer break by playing video games
- The mail comes and Drake goes to collect it
- He’s surprised when he sees a letter for Dewey tucked into the usual junk mail
- The surprise turns into concern and worry when the address has Dewey’s bedroom on it
- He decides to just it away and pretend it doesn’t exist
- Cuz that’ll solve all his problems
- He ‘nonchalantly’  talks to Dew and Gos about whether or not they’d like to go on a small vacation for Dewey’s birthday
- The next day he gets two of those creepy letters
- He once again pretends that they don’t exist and burns them
- Dewey and Gosalyn start getting a little suspicious
- A day goes by without any letters
- Drake thinks that’s the end of it.
- Then they get a full eight letters
- Cue Panic
- He makes Dew and Gos make a pack and then they head out for ‘vacation’
- They are thoroughly suspicious of him by now
- Gos calls Drake out, but he dismisses her and they go by boat to some run down house on an island
- Drake is sure that’ll be the end of it
- The night before Dewey’s birthday, he decides to stay up until midnight
- Gosalyn joins him and they talk about stuff
- Dewey admits that he wishes he knew about his birth family
- Drake’s only ever told him that he was given to him by some old grandpa
- But both Dewey and Gos think he’s joking about that
- Gosalyn kinda understands, because she knew her grandfather
- She still thinks of Drake as her dad, but she finds comfort in knowing about her biological parents
- So she hopes he learns eventually
- The clock strikes twelve
- Dewey turns 11 (and the same age as Gos, but only for a week)
- And suddenly the door gets busted down
- Gos and Dew are, obviously, pretty fucking scared
- home invasion and all that
- Drake swoops in with a punch to the dudes chest, and nearly breaks his hand
- The strange large man apologizes for knocking down the door, saying that he just wanted to knock
- He says hi to Dewey, introduces himself as Launchpad, and goes to sit down
- Drake shows a lot of confusion at this turn of events. Specifically, he wants to know how Launchpad knows Dewey’s name
- Launchpad express’s his own confusion at this, and realizes that Drake, Gosalyn, and Dewey know nothing about the wizarding world
- So he gives Dewey his Hogwarts acceptance letter (and a cake, which already has a Launchpad-sized bite taken out of it) and explains -sort of- about how he’s a wizard, and what that entails
- He also tells Dewey a little bit about his family, which 100% sells Dewey on the idea
- Drake, understandably, does not believe him, until he gives them a show of magic
- Which kinda freaks Drake out, but makes Dewey and Gosalyn way too excited
- Drake decides to allow Dewey to give this ‘Hogwarts’ a try
- But he does tell Dewey that he’ll love him no matter what happens
- So the group makes plans to go to Diagon Alley with Launchpad in a few days
- A few days later, the group meets up with Launchpad outside the Leaky Tap
- Drake doesn’t notice the Leaky Tap, but he’s the only one who can’t
- Of course, he can easily see Launchpad, so it doesn’t really matter
- Drake is still a little wary about the whole thing, but he is quickly warming up to Launchpad, which helps to put him at ease
- When they enter the Leaky Tap, everyone (sans Launchpad) is surprised at how everyone inside seems to know Dewey
- They even recognize a few faces as some of the strange people who’d wave or act like they knew him sometimes
- Drake never really liked those people
- Launchpad explains that Dewey and his brothers are kinda famous, and he’ll tell him more later after they get him his stuff
- They leave the Leaky Tap out the back entrance, and enter Diagon Alley
- Cue shock and amazement from everyone
- Especially Drake, as he can no longer deny that this actually a thing that is happening
- The kids run off, looking into the shops at all the amazing and mind bending things in them
- They are quickly enthralled
- Drake is initially worried that they’ll get lost, but Launchpad assures him that it’s fine, because the place they need to go (Gringotts) is straight ahead, so they probably won’t get lost
- He and Drake talk for a little bit (Drake is still annoyed about how the letters had Dewey’s  f r e a k i n g  bedroom on them) and Launchpad gets Drake to calm down a little
- Just in time for them to enter Gringotts Bank, and thusly, the mine-cart roller-coaster
- Drake hates it, the others love it
- Launchpad picks up a mysterious parcel, which the kids are immediately intrigued about
- Then they get back on the mine-cart to go to the vault Dewey shares with his brothers
- He learns that both his brothers have already accessed the vault earlier that week, which means that he won’t be running into them until the school year starts
- Which he’s kinda bummed about
- All sad feelings go away when he sees the inside of the vault, and the massive amount of Galleons in there
- Which means that Dewey’s rich
- Which Gosalyn immediately comments on
- After they shake themselves out of the money stupor, and Dewey grabs a fair amount of money, the group goes back outside of Gringotts and begins the trek for Dewey’s school supplies
- Dewey and Gosalyn try to go on a spending spree, and the get the most impressive/expensive stuff
- Which leads to Drake confiscating the gold pouch
- At least until after Dewey gets all his school supplies
- They get most of them, including getting Dewey fitted for robes (which both Dewey and the seamstress hated - Dewey cannot stand still for the life of him) until it gets to the wand
- Dewey and Gosalyn go in, but Drake and Launchpad stay out, saying that they wanted to get him something
- The shop is run by a old duck by the name of Olivander
- He is immediately excited to see Dewey, one of the ‘Chosen Three’
- Though he does spare an intrigued glance to Gosalyn
- He gets right to it afterwards, fitting Dewey with wand, after wand, after wand
- None seem to be right (which makes Dewey nervous)
- Until Olivander finally picks out one special wand, which Dewey immediately knows is right with barely a touch
- He picks that wand, and Olivander explains that it’s core is a phoenix tail feather
- And that the phoenix that gave him that tail feather gave him one more
- And that one had been placed in his mothers wand
- Filled with awe and respect, Dewey pays for the wand, and he and Gos head back out
- And they find Drake and Launchpad waiting for them, with an owl for Dewey
- Gosalyn decides that that’s unfair, until Drake explains that it’s so that Dewey can write to them
- Dewey, overcome with emotion, decides to name his owl Darkwing, for the show that his family was raised on
- Which makes Drake emotional as well, and he does a poor job hiding it
- Drake makes Dewey promise to write every day while he’s gone, and he tells him again that he’s already so proud of him
- And he does end up caving to Gosalyn’s demands and promises to get them a puppy while Dewey is off at Hogwarts
And that’s it for how it would begin! Honestly, the length kinda got away from me, so next time (if it doesn’t get away from me again) we’ll talk about The First Meeting and Beyond! I hope you’ve enjoyed!
