Do have any opinions/resources about the situation in Niger? You’re the most knowledgeable of the people I know about French colonialism and that seems to be at the centre of the recent protests and coup.

First of all I am in no way or shape a specialist in the subject of French colonialism. I learned everything because it’s part of my family history (proud grand daughter and great grand daughter of freedom fighters) and the decolonization of all of Africa is part of the history of Algeria and therefore part of my history. Because you cannot learn about decolonization without learning about colonization I had to learn about France’s colonial history in the rest of Africa and eventually in the rest of world.

One thing to keep in mind when addressing military coups in Africa is that the military was created in a very different context than it was in the West. In Africa a lot of armies were created by freedom fighters who go fought against colonialism. It doesn’t mean that their modern version is not corrupted and that it is never used as a way to oppress the people. But unlike the west where the army was often created to protect the powerful, in Africa it often originated in groups of men fighting to protect the people from the powerful colonial power.

Anyway to your question! To use the words of Gabon’s first president after the independence in 1960 when he visited France after his election in 1961 “Gabon is independent, but between Gabon and France nothing has changed; everything goes on as before.” And this applies to too many African countries.

France refuses to accept the independence of African countries. They have a paternalist colonial behavior with us. Algeria is one of the rare former French colonies who manages to say fuck you to France and even Algeria is not completely free to say fuck you because of the consequences it could have on us Algerians who live in France. Because of France’s refusal to accept the independence and the desire to keep a form of control over the continent France has been involved in multiple assassination and coup d’Etat in the continent. They were also involved in multiple civil wars. They control the currency of some African countries. How can you be independent when your currency is owned and printed by the former colonizer?

Terrorism gives an excuse to France to send its army in the continent especially in the Sahel region and that same army pillages the region instead of actually helping against terrorism. Now when those countries decide that France’s presence is doing more harm than good and kick out France they are vilified. They are told they are controlled by someone else (depending on the situation their either accuse Algeria or Russia or both). It happened with Mali and Mauritania. And this is what’s happening with Niger.

Africa is a young continent in term of population. The youth kicked out colonizers in the 60’s and 70’s. Now the young generation wants to get rid of Neo-colonialism. African governments who are greedy and let the colonizers take whatever they want need to go. If it has to happen with a Coup d’Etat then so be it. That’s my personal opinion in general not specifically for Niger.

For Niger specifically I don’t know enough about Abdourahamane Tiani and don’t have enough perspective to decide if I support him personably but I have enough knowledge and perspective to support the demise of Mohamed Bazoum government and the decision to cut tie with France. France is still pillaging Africa and Bazoum was allowing it in Niger. The simple fact that the ECOWAS is standing in favor of Bazoum and willing to actually start a war should be enough to tell you that what is happening in Niger is bad for France’s interests. And if it’s bad for France’s interest if the new leader is not corrupted then it will be good for the country. The ECOWAS pretends to act in the interest of the continent but it only benefits France. The countries that were suspended are the same countries that are getting rid of French influence and Neo-colonialism. Corrupted African leaders who serve as France’s lapdogs refuse to have fair elections so the only solution to kick them out and gain real freedom is a coup or a revolution. It’s not an accident if all the latest coup d’etat in Africa happened in former French colonies. It’s not an accident if a big portion of the population support those coups. People are fed up by the control France still has.

(I actually read something very interesting about what’s happening in Niger yesterday but can’t find it anymore I will share a link later if I find it again)

Also I just want to add something off topic about terrorism in Africa and South West Asia. I find it extremely fascinating how countries where the US, France or the West in general came to “help” never managed to find a durable solution against terrorism. Meanwhile during the Algerian Black decade/civil war in the 90’s, Algeria refused to let France and the US send soldiers to “help” and we did eventually find a durable solution on our own.

Every few years Yugioh comes back and takes over my life.

And as I rewatch the anime I can’t stop thinking about a world where Jaden was raised by Yugi.

I don’t know if you all remember but a few years back there was a creator on here and they had an au were the Gx gang were raised by the Duel monster gang. But they are gone now and I can’t find their stuff😢 but it’s okay. I’ve got my own ideas on this!

Instead of having the whole Gx gang raised by the DM gang we are just going to focus on Jaden.

When Jaden is four all the drama with Yubel happens. His parents aren’t around very often, and Yubel is being Yubel. She sees Jaden fighting and losing duels so she lashes out at the other duelest because in the dark world if Jaden lost that duel he’d be dead. She’s just protecting him. He designs the Neo-spacians and they get sent into space, and his parents make the request for Yubel to be sent up as well (I know in the show it was Jaden but we’re going to say it was his parents idea first)

Jaden is now having horrible nightmares about Yubel and his shadow magic is lashing out. He’s four. He has so much power and no idea how to control it. So his parents, afraid of their child take him to get ‘help.’ Whatever it is that they do it blocks out Jaden’s powers and his memories. He can’t remember Yubel, he can’t see spirits. But it’s to late. He’s already branded a social pariah and his parents are scared of him and he doesn’t know why. His parents just can’t take it anymore and drop the kid off at a fire station (don’t know if this is a thing in Japan but in some states you can drop a kid off at any age at and just leave) or maybe they just die. Either way they are gone and he’s in an orphanage. Alone, scared, no spirits, parents, or friends.

Here is where Yugi comes in.

Our boy just graduated. DSOD just happened. (Jaden’s cards going to space were Kaiba testing things for his satellite thingy) Kaiba is AWOL. But Yugi doesn’t know why…yet.

Maybe he’s in town for a tournament, or college, but for some reason he’s in town, and what he does find is this kid dueling by himself in a park. No one will go near him and he looks so lonely. And Yugi knows that feeling. So he goes over and plays with the kid. Jaden is ecstatic, the king of games wants to duel him! Best day ever.

Over time the two keep running into each other until Yugi learns about the kids situation. No family, no friends, he’s alone in the world. And Yugi, he just can’t stand that. Yes Jaden is a little loud and over excited but he’s a great kid and Yugi can’t even comprehend why his parents would abandon him. So he makes the decision to go and adopt this kid.

But the adoption’s weird. He expected a lot of questions. He’s 18 after all, and while he’s got his grandpa’s support, he’s still 18 years old trying to adopt a 4 year old. But the orphanage basically throws the kid at him happy to be rid of the problem. (Everyone in that part of town knows what used to happen when Jaden dueled.) and Yugi is perplexed. He’s not mad, it’s the outcome he wanted, but why is everyone so scared of the kid?

He tries to find out but there are no records of Jaden. Who his parents are, or what happened. (Rich people have the ability to get certain records closed) so he goes to the one person he can think of who might be able to find those records, Kaiba. But when he gets there Mokuba is barely keeping it together. Yugi asked where Seto is and the kid just breaks down, telling him all about Seto’s trip to the afterlife to duel Atem and Yugi is floored. Why would he be so stupid. Mokuba begs Yugi to go after his brother. But Yugi hesitates, he’s got Jaden to worry about now.

“Who’s Jaden?” And it’s in this moment that Yugi realizes he was so wrapped up in adopting Jaden, getting him home, and trying to figure out why that whole town was scared of a 4 year old, that he didn’t tell anyone about Jaden! So he quickly explains to Mokuba who Jaden is and what is happening and why he needs Seto’s help.

Mokuba didn’t think he could like Yugi anymore then he already did, after all Yugi has helped him and Seto a lot, but now! After learning he saved a kid for an orphanage and an awful upbringing like he and Seto had, he adores this man. (Now if Seto would just get his head out of his butt and realize that Yugi isn’t just his rival but also a perfect match. He’s the biggest rivalshipper) but he needs Yugi to go after Seto, after all who else can?

So Yugi calls Joey to watch Jaden. And Joey is experiencing so many different emotions, having so many breakdowns. What do you mean you got a Kid Yug? What do you mean Kaiba went to the Afterlife to duel Atem? What do you mean you’re going after him? Why? I’m so confused!!

But he instantly loves Jaden. They both love dueling, they both have empty heads. Uncle Joey is in the house! He offers to go after Kaiba for Yugi, Jaden can’t lose him, but Yugi insist he go. He wants to see Atem, but he also knows he has a better chance than Joey at coming back.

So after Kaiba Yugi goes. Jaden’s safe with Joey and Mokuba.

And if this isn’t in the top 5 weirdest thing Yugi’s ever done, which is saying something.

He meets up with Kaiba and Atem. And Atem has spent the last month yelling at Kaiba for coming here because the man didn’t plan on how to get back. And here comes Yugi, Atem sees him and starts to lose it because, either Yugi is dead or he followed Kaiba here and he doesn’t know which is worse. Until Yugi starts yelling at Kaiba as well. Because “I had to leave my son to come get you!” And hold up now Atem and Kaiba are Floored because “son?”

Atem’s wondering if it’s been way longer than he thought and Yugi and Kaiba have just aged well, or did he miss something THAT big when he was with his aibou.

So Yugi has to explain who Jaden is. (Kaiba’s in love but he doesn’t realize it) and Atem is so proud.

Yugi drags Seto back down to earth but not before some adventures in the afterlife. That may end with Atem coming back down with them by accident. (A gift from the gods, Atem didn’t plan or ask for it, but he will forever be grateful for this second chance at life) Uncle Atem gets to meet his nephew and he’s pumped.

Jaden grows up so loved. Learning from the best. Seto finds out about Jaden’s past and Atem works with the kid on unlocking his powers once again while Kaiba tries to retrieve Jaden’s cards from space. (They are his soul cards, he’s suppose to have them, just as Kaiba is suppose to have Blue-eyes, or Atem the Dark Magician. And Seto just sent them to space!! Yugi was not happy when he found out, he doesn’t blame Seto, but he’s not happy)

Jaden grows up going to all of his dad’s tournaments. They give the kid a baseball hat and sunglasses so no one knows what the ‘prince of duels’ looks like.

Eventually Yugi and Seto get their crap together and start dating/get married. Seto is the most over protective Oto-san ever. Only rivaled by uncle Atem.

When Jaden is fourteen he’s ready to go to duel school. He enrolls are Jaden Yuki. His transcript does not mention his parents, as Jaden doesn’t want any special privileges at the school.

Yugi gives his son winged kuriboh on his way to his entrance test. The whole gang is there in a private sweet to watch the entrance exams and see Jaden’s duel against Dr. Crowler.

Seto is furious at his staffs behavior but Yugi and Atem are more focused on Jaden finally being able to see spirits again. They’re so excited. Seto less so, he’s happy for his son but he’s so focused on his employee bullying a child, his child. (Lets just say Crowler owes keeping his job to Jaden, he will have no clue of this until after Jaden graduates)

Gx is so much funnier because Kaiba is hearing about all the crazy things his staff is doing and he’s ready to fire everyone, but his son keeps saying he likes them, the school, the adventure. Jaden so desperately doesn’t want any of his classmates to know who his parents are, not wanting to be treated differently. So Seto can’t fire them, yet. But once Jaden graduates he is overhauling this school.

Yugi is at a cross between laughing at Atem and Seto being over protective and also losing his mind because who stored the dark lords at this school! “Seto, did you know about this?” (Seto’s never been more scared of his husband)

Season one is uninterrupted. But season 2 is close. Even Yugi wants to step in when the evil cult comes to light. But it’s season 3 that makes the family lose their minds.

If I have Taylor swift mutual, you’ve managed to avoid my criticism of her for years bc I tend not to post about her on here at all.

I don’t hate her, but I fucking loathe her brand and the following it’s cultivated. And it bothers me so deeply because she exploits her fans and society with victim narratives, which plays into white supremacy ideologies. If you’re skeptical of this claim, ask yourself why someone who doesn’t old nazi ideology has such a loud and vocal neo nazi/white supremacist following?

Usually this type of vocal support originates when the artist shares far right wing ideologies and is public about it. Taylor is a Democrat and largely support left wing beliefs. They didn’t randomly attach themselves to her, she exploited certain beliefs and identities and attracted the wrong type of fan.

But this post isn’t about those type of fans, but rather, why the way she operates is loathesome and I’m sick of how society, fans, and people coddle her.

This all started with a black man daring to say a blonde haired, blue eyed white girl wasn’t deserving of an award.

Before anyone says, “you’re defending Kanye.”

Fuck Kanye!

However, the 2009 mtv vmas conditioned people how to treat and perceive Taylor, which is as a victim.

Now I know someone is outraged and is thinking, “Taylor WAS a victim.”

While that is true, does anyone honestly think that moment should’ve been as big as it was? Let’s be for real. Should the media have milked that moment for an entire fucking year and people still talk about it 13 years later.

An award about a fucking basic ass music video. And I don’t care for the single ladies music either, so it’s not like I have any skin in the game.

It was a bad moment, but it should’ve only lasted a moment.

Y’all want to know why we still talk about it? Why Taylor can still milk and exploit that moment, which she does?

Because she was a blonde hair, blue eyed white girl and this was a scary, arrogant black man.

Back then, people argued that Kanye targeted her because she was a girl. That this would’ve never happened if it had been a man. The racial implications are clear.

This signified to the nation that she needed to be protected.

For those who are wondering why I’m stressing blonde haired, blue eyed white woman that’s because it’s important: it’s who nazis believe are the perfect and superior beings.

For people who believe that Kanye targeted Taylor for this reason, keep in mind: this the same man who said, “George bush doesn’t care about black people” on national tv in front of a bigger audience. Why would he specifically target Taylor or be afraid to confront a man if he literally called out the most powerful man in the world at the time?

If this had been James blunt who’d pulled that stunt, it would’ve died out. But it was fucking Kanye. And the media obsessed and obsessed about it. Because they already hated him and he was already polarizing, but still a fucking superstar. They made sure we never forgot what happened that night. And instead of people asking, “why are they making this such a big deal”, people ate it up. Like they were asking this man what he recently deceased mother would think about what he did when one: he was only drunk as a result of his mom’s death and his difficulty in dealing with it two: again, this man called out a president on tv, Taylor was small potatoes in comparison.

Like this moment should’ve been akin to when lil mama got on the stage with Alicia keys and Jay z. It’s a moment we randomly remember, but largely forget about.

Admittedly, taylor was young and presumably overwhelmed with everything that happened that night and what came afterwards. However, taylor never sat and thought, “although Kanye ruined my moment, that situation was completely overblown.”

No. I’m text, she constantly leans into or plays into that night whenever given the chance. She loves to play into narrative that Kanye hates her and is feuding with her. That’s she trying to ignore him and get over that ordeal.

Thing is: anyone who has listen to Kanye’s music can tell you that if Kanye is beefing with someone you’ll know it. He’s very obvious about it. Kanye flat out apologized to her, referenced the incident in a song, said he was pressured into apologizing a specific way, and then rarely if ever referenced it again until 2016. And that timeline is important. Because Taylor was the one making songs or references to him/that night, yet claimed that he’s the one who can’t let it go.

Now before we get to 2016, leading up to this, most of Taylor’s popular songs or moments was about her being a victim (of a bad relationship) or fighting bad against someone who “wronged” her. In some way, shape, or form there was a victim narrative happening.

She was very loud about the exes that wronged her, but when she was clearly and the only one in the wrong, she’s quiet about it with her music. She sings about it, but does make a big to do about it. It’s not the centerpiece.

During this time, Kanye sends her flowers, she presents him an award, and they have one or two other good moments—they also publicly compliment each other.

Then, “Famous” happens.

But wait, I’m going to backtrack again. Remember how people said she was receiving unfair criticism for singing about her relationships and exes and that if she were a man she’d be praised?

Funny enough, there’s a genre about relationships whether it’s failed, successful, reminiscing over whatever and that’s R&B. The R&B girls (and guys) have been singing about exes and shit since foreva and they didn’t receive any of this criticism. Hell, literally every Adele album is about relationships or heartbreak and, at least, three of them are about real relationships.

What’s the difference between them and Taylor?

We almost always know who she’s talking about and that a huge problem.

She’s lucky that most of her exes are famous—well, no, they’re lucky. Can you imagine being a regular Joe and being attacked because a relationship didn’t work out and Taylor wrote you out as the bad guy? Because lets be real, do we believe that every relationship (not every bc we know she did Tom and Taylor dirty, which she receives very little to no criticism about from her fans) she was not at fault for and they were the only ones to do wrong?

Because if you don’t believe they, you should have an issue with how she operates—no longer past tense—and that her exes get harassed and attacked because of her music. Because we sure as hell would have a problem if the genders were flipped.

Or how she wrote bad blood about some fucking backup dancers that left to perform for Katy, and then made a video with all her famous friends, which is effectively bullying. Yet, that’s ignored.

So we get to 2016 and Kanye calls and asks for her blessing. Taylor seems to be genuinely receptive of this conversation, which is important to note because people claim she was being agreeable not to anger him or whatever. When he asks her approval, she basically says that it’s okay for him to say whatever he wants bc it’s his music. And this conversation is important, but not for reasons Taylor stans believe.

When the song drops, taylor gives the impression that they didn’t talk or really talk, which is false. Kanye was trying to have that discussion with her and they did to an extent. He didn’t call her to just discuss her putting it on her Twitter account, her wanted her to be okay and not offended by it. Why would he ask her to put the song on her TL and expect her not to listen or be offended by it??? What sense does that make?

People make this about her being called “that bitch”, which is why her essentially telling Kanye he didn’t need her permission and that he should write what he wanted is important. She didn’t hear the added like, but she did give him carte blache to say whatever he wanted. This doesn’t mean she had to be okay with it, I get why she was offended. But she could’ve said, “we did discuss the song and I knew he was going to say some risqué things, but I don’t feel comfortable being called a bitch.”

This acknowledges that a conversation happened and she knew he was going to say controversial shit, but that revisions were made.

Also, the line about them having sex…she was completely okay with that during the phone call. Yet, when it was released not only did she fake outrage, she made a Grammy speech addressing it. And let’s be clear: fame doesn’t equal success or acclaim. For someone who is an acclaimed lyricist, she should know better and does.

This was her exploiting her image and goodwill vs Kanye’s image and perception.

She misrepresented that conversation and made up a narrative all while being asked to be kept out of it. Then to claim that Kanye secretly recorded her to embarrass her???

Although there was no way for her to know, presumably, that Kanye’s been recording his life since the fucking 90s to flat out confidently state that he only did that to hurt and harm her was deliberate. Like, she factually stated that as if it was known only for a documentary to be released 5-6 years later that proved Kanye did record all aspects of his life.

And for people who need this explained to them: part of the conversation around this time was how he was targeting and harassing her, which this “secret” recording was evidence of. Because when you actually listen to the conversation to understand and not take sides, this appears to be a communication issue, esp culturally.

Although it makes sense why Taylor would take insult at being called a bitch 1. Some women don’t 2. Rap is very misogynistic and bitch is sometimes perceived as a compliment as well as the idea that a woman would reward them with sex for whatever reason. But again, Taylor never objected to that line during the call. Was not offended and just said others (I believe feminists), but that she’d be in on it and would surprise people after it was all over. And we can say she was saying this to placate him, but wouldn’t you say that’s on her and not him. He asked her opinion and was genuine?

Despite this back and forth, who is the one writing and singing about this?

Taylor.

She says she wants to be left out of the narrative and left along, yet she brings it up.

And we have to ask why it’s so bad for others to discuss their dealings with her, but it’s okay for her to obsessively talk about her dealings with others. She wants to be left alone while not leaving them alone and knowing her fans will harass them.

Like she’s rehashing old shit (relationships) in midnights. Why??? I know the concept behind it, but it still seems childish, obsessive, and like she can’t let anything go, which her fans seem to be fine with.

And can someone tell me if she ever addressed slutshaming her ex’s then girlfriend who was then harassed by her fans? Because while she may have been going, thats still fucked up.

Or how that situation with her masters was not only misrepresented, but her later going on to discuss Scooter’s divorce is weird as fuck. And before someone argues about how she has a right to own her masters, my point of contention isn’t that. It’s the fact that most artists don’t own their masters and she tried to position it as sexism as to why she was denied to ability to own hers. And that the only reason scooter got investors to buy it with him was to spite her.

This is all her exploring white woman tears and white supremacy ideology. How is she both a shrewd business woman and a poor victim taken advantage of??? Can both exist? Sure, but not in the narrative that she’s crafted.

She always need some person, powerful figure, expectation to fight against and conquer. She may have taken a break with Evermore and folklore, but she’s back at it and people just eat it right up.

She’s petty, spiteful, vindictive, and refuses to let anything go, despite her success and not needing to relying on this shit.

And you can’t say shit about her without someone feeling offended and personally attacked.

Now some may think I’m a huge fan of Taylor’s because I know so much and have opinions or obsessed with her, but I’ve successfully avoided most of her music for years. I keep up with pop culture and can tell you a lot about many artists without actually listening to or keeping up with them. Esp when their fans obsess about their all of the time.

But ask yourself why you’re so protective of her in comparison to the other girls. Why is she the only one worth defending like this?

Their name is Shinji and they go by They/He/She, 20 years old

Often refereed to as “Cap” or “Jiji” if your close to him

She’s from the GOOD OL COUNTRY SIDE and never truly got used to the city. One of the reasons they were slow to make friends their age and didn’t mind going down a suspicious drain.

Even to this day he doesn’t feel like he belongs. But now it’s mainly due to the fact her special charge up is WEIRDLY fast and they now have a massive ahh scar on their face from the sanitization

They know about the spire but to a very limited extent, Marina shared some early demos of it to him and she was very impressed but at the same time super confused (sucks at technology)

Has no idea any of spire is happening and just knows 8 went to go on their own personal mission, thinks 4 is just up to the usual

Hasn’t actually caught up with her fellow agents in a while and is looking for an opportunity to do so

Was relieved they got an official weapon supplier (Sheldon) but despise the fact it had to be THE MACHINE YAPPER. But begrudgingly is eternally grateful for someone like Sheldon

Very active in the squidbeak splatoon but from time to time visits Plaza and Splatsville. They don’t like going to Square because it reminds them how behind with the trends they are despite only being 20. However enjoys visiting 4 and 8!!

Is VERY formal and refers to everyone except Callie and Marie as their agent numbers. Calls Deep Cut (and sometimes joking 4) “Marie’s lackey” or “Lackey (insert number)”

If she refers to someone by their real name that person knows their FUCKED

Doesn’t know he’s cool AF and is trying to reconnect with people their age. She overcompensates just a teeny tiny bit. Ends up intimidating a lot of new people she talks to. So their often the stoic, quietly supportive type.

Makes the rest of SquidBeak train with her. IT’S INTENSE. But she’s trying to be softer okay? Gets tips from 8 and Marina on how to be less… scary

Secretly admires and cherishes every other agent for one reason or another. Admires 4’s charisma and chill, appreciate 8’s honesty and kindness despite what the world has given her, and silently adores 3.5 like a little sibling

Has got groovy moves and is the ultimate dancer. THEY’VE GOT THAT BOOGY IN THEM. But has like… 0 motivation to do anything but sit around unless you give her a good reason.

Agent 4

His name is Soule and uses He/They, transmasc non-binary. AND HE’s FEELING 22-

Actually Cap’s cousin but they both have no idea lol. Grew up in a small town near the farm Cap was from. They talked occasionally but kept in touch. Cap told them if he wanted to find her to go down the first suspicious drain he saw

No nicknames beside 4 and “Marie Lackey #1”, is a “Grown ass man” and a “WOMAN IN STEM!!” At the same time

Just finished Undergrad!!! Moved to Inkopolis for college (engineering degree) and was surprised how fun city life was. Super into fashion and keeping up with the next big thing. He likes to tease Cap about how behind with the times they are.

Is super chill, goes with the flow. Happily enables Callie’s chaos and always has enough energy to come up with a silly jab or witty quip. Has the personality of spider man. Besides that their just a chill dude working up to repay student loans through turf wars and Grizzco (well maybe not Grizzco anymore)

Had a MASSIVE growth spurt between 2 and 3. Used to be the shortest (at least before Neo) but now is the tallest. Plus the clunky ahh boots add even more height. Had to get new hero gear and decided that safety matters and got actual knee and knee pads as their very sloppy and chaotic when it comes to combat

Isn’t active in the squidbeak splatoon but casually hangs out with everyone. Will sometimes forget their friends with THE FUCKING SQUID SISTERS AND OFF THE HOOK. Called for emergencies when they need backup

Doesn’t know Deep Cut that well but they bond over “Boss Marie”

3.5 hasn’t met him yet. All Neo hears about him is that he’s “the stereotypical comic hero” (<- Marie) and “the big shot” (<- Pearl, derogatory) Neo hears that they’d get along and probably make good friends. 3.5 sometimes nags Marie to learn more about him since he’s barely mentioned.

Soule knows Neo is the reason he’s unemployed lol

He’s not salty about it, it’s just he was super high ranking and one of the first few employees. Certainly the closest to ever meeting the big boss in person. Never met the real man himself tho

Marie still keeps up that journal about his turf wars and shares his stats. While at first he was incredibly weirded out and scared, now he uses it to track his income because STUENT DEBT.

Offered to use data/memory from him to be a sort of “security” system for Spire. Started out being less focused and then a strait up coma.

As the spire became more and more advanced it demanded more data from his memory (mainly his turf war battles) and eventually the blank slate “Security” started to look like him. Aka the leader of parellel canon. “Intensifying Harmony” is because it’s getting closer and closer to him as time goes on. He’s in the hospital rn.

Once 8 beat smollusk though he woke up. But his eyes look very tired and right now he’s on physical therapy so he doesn’t do missions. Rocking some crutches (if he’s gonna be in pain he might as well be serving cunt while doing it). Always sleepy but likes to drink surgery stuff so the sugar rush kind balances it out

Agent 8

Her name is Olivia and she uses She/Her. 21 years old

Nicknames include 8, Olive, Liv, Livy, and her (basically gamer tag) turf war name “Sandwich”. Gives everyone nicknames that make zero sense, at least to everyone else. No on gets her naming convention

Captain is “Trampoline”, Soule is “Ice”, and Neo is “Felt”

4’s roommate and incredibly worried. Not only about Soule but also about money because the rent is DUEEEEEEE. The medical bills have luckily been covered by Off The Hook. She doesn’t really want to have them pay the rent because she knows that’ll invite them to start spoiling her and Soule. She knows when they start they can’t stop

Speaking about Off The Hook, she offered to look into the program to see what went wrong in there and accidentally got swept up in the madness (aka found by “security” or Parallel Canon’s minions) leading to passing out and being found by Pearl.

Does casual and patrol missions which basically consist of being a vigilante stopping crime. Also called in if there’s an emergency and the crew needs backup

At this point is Off The Hook’s daughter. Is super smart and easily picked up on the ins and outs of inkling society. Currently working at Ammo Knights and exchanges casual design ideas with 4 and Sheldon. May or may not have had some… input in Grizzco weapons because of that.

Has met 3.5, and thinks their pretty swell. Taught them a few weapon tricks and fixes their weapons sometimes. Their relationship is sort of strained as 3.5 is part of “New Wave Octoling Culture” and they never had to really deal with Octavio and Octoling society

It the eccentric bubbly one. Always willing to help and very determined. But is sort of subdued and quiet. Very sentimental and talks in short sentences punctuated with faces or hand motions to better explain. Still kind of struggles with the inkling language (it’s like the difference between Chinese and English)

DUMPED her old gear. She hates walking around in heels 💀. New one resembles 4’s new gear because they decided it would be more convenient to get new ones together bc siblingsss <33

Her and Soule are the sibling dynamic ever. Quiet but crazy and Snarky but chill. It’s like you put the class clown and the nerd together and they do nothing but enable eachother. Quiet kid captain is suffering in the back.

Takes the squid beak splatoon very seriously and will refer to everyone using their “codenames” (aka her silly little nicknames for them) when in the job. She says them in this super serious tone. But besides that will use their “code names” as just affectionate nick names.

Became a lot more carefree once Octo Expansion was finished. But she’s got this intense ass expression on her constantly so people are usually surprised when she’s like… showing off her rubber ducky collection or her CDs. She looks like she’s gonna beat you up when really she’s just knitting (she has a ton of different hobbies)

Is the type of person to be super indecisive about the little things but makes big choices and never looks back. Bold decisions and zero regrets used to be the only way she could survive in Octoling society. Old habits die hard.

Super into electro folk. Got 4 into it and now they basically have raves together in their apartment. Despite the apartment not being that big (at least by inkling standards) they’ve turned it into an impromptu music studio. Half the main room is filled with instruments (some they made themselves) and mixers they bought. Olivia finds it insulting how much Ech0 0nslaught resembles Soule’s remixes and favorite songs…

Agent 3.5/Junior

Their name is Neo and is your local awkward they/them, 15

Was kind of a street kid until they got picked up by this big friend group who pushed them into modern society. Has never been happier

Often called “Junior” or “little dude.” Is honestly fine with being treated like the little kid they are because they’re so used to having to fend for themselves. They will happily be taken care of

Doesn’t get any pop culture references. Them and captain are cluelessly fallowing along when Callie and Deep Cut are talking in slang and meme references. Neo is just happy to be there.

Currently trying their hardest to hide the squidbeak from their friend group because they fear it’ll scare them all away. Is torn between each of their found families.

Admires the agents so much. They see a little bit themselves in all of them and looks up to them and a goal to strive to.

They’ve seen how happy Olivia is even though she’s had it much worse and wants that. They want to be as cool and powerful and captain. And Neo is just dying to know more about the “hidden” agent, the way he’s described as the “One hit wonder” dazzled them particularly.

They won’t press the matter as to why 4’s not here because they can tell it’s a wound in Marie and 8’s side. They can tell captain misses Olivia. And their gaydar is going off HARD when it comes to Deep Cut. Would probably be just as done with Pearlina as 8 and Acht are (if they knew them).

Kinda cheap and stingy with money. Sells autographed squid sister stuff and turns photos they took of Deep Cut into posters. Gotta make that bank yk? Splat land currency kinda sucks so the community is shifting towards the standard currency (aka the currency we use in game).

Does turf wars with Olivia. They use a splatana and 8 uses a range blaster. They’re a one two hit combo and 8 is contemplating adding them to the “family” chart. (A list of people including Marina, Pearl, and Soule)

But once again their relationship is kind of strained. Neo doesn’t see it though. 8 will talk about THE HORRORS of Octoling society and they’re TERRIFIED. They don’t really get eachother but hey, their trying to get closer.

Kind of smug af because “I WENT TO SPACE!”. Also thinks their good at turf war but they really aren’t. Both a girl failure and the coolest man around (lying) at the same time. Big Man suggests using any/all pronouns to them but Neo is still trying to figure out how to even refer to themselves as they/them

Will steal your pronouns AND your gender (keep them safe!!!). Actually steals a lot of stuff. Stickers, weapons, food for small fry, clothes even, all kinds of stuff. Like I said old habits die hard.

Small fry is really well spoken and read. While Neo talks in a more careful, almost taken aback tone. Like they’re trying to come up with what to say. Both of them struggle with knowing when to let others talk. They talk to eachother so quickly that no one understands

Is teaching everybody ISL (Inkling sign language) that they learned from one of their friends. It’s helping them since their HoH and their right ear is busted. Lost about 56% of their hearing in the left ear too due to living out in the Splatlands. They don’t talk about it… (Although the ISL is also helping 8)

General HCs:

Cap still participates in turf war but she prefers ranked. Their team includes Callie, Marie, and 4. He feels like a god compared to their opponents and it really strokes their ego. However whenever it’s tower oor calm blitz SHE GETS HUMBLEEEEDDDD

Has no idea how to dress casual and STILL sucks at hygiene so they’re just walking around awkward af in weird outfits and (too much) cologne. He needs A BATH

Calle still has the shades stashed away somewhere in her closet. They’re beaten and broken and overused. Marie and Sheldon worked on away to destroy it for a while and eventually just had 4 light it on fire and throw booyah bombs at it until it was shards.

While it was still working Callie would put it on a bunch, broke Tavio out, and they’d do the whole boss battle thing again. Became almost weekly and it was part of 4’s schedule at that point. He always joked and insulted Octavio during fight and did things just to annoy him.

8 HATES anything that look vaguely like a blender. There are no blenders in their apartments but they do have a food processor and frother. 8 also tinkers with their microwave and toaster. Her and Marina tried to turn their oven into an impromptu Octotrooper with their own tentacles (failed miserably)

Sometimes when her emotions become too much for her she and the other agents (not Neo though, she think their too young) go to random junkyards in the splatlands and hit trash with all they’ve got using baseball bats. It like a free rage room with friends!!

The agents got tattoos together after Octo Expansion. It’s their numbers on random parts of their body. Marie has a 1 on her left ankle, Callie has a 2 on the back of her neck, Shinji has a small 3 on their right wrist below their palm, Soule has it on the back of his left hand, and Olivia got it on her upper arm.

Secret hand shakes galore!!!! Callie is a particular advocate of the weirding shit you’ve ever seen variety.

Deep Cut are the team rocket rascals who are aggressively nice. They’re always around the corner to scare you or reverse pickpocket and such. They make great friends once you get on their good side

Everyone can tell that Shiver is secretly a girl failure. They all know she’s trying to be cool and failing. She’s besties with Captain and Neo is alway side eyeing Shiver when her and Frye are together. Especially when big man isn’t there lmaooo

Shiver and Frye had their whole world shatter when they ranted to Marie and Callie about how Big Man betrayed them for squid sisters and they revealed THATS THEM

Post side order Neo finally meets Off the Hook and Soule, and instantly gets ROASTED by Soule and Pearl after they say something a little too fangirly. Is the victim of so… so many your mom jokes and gets none of them

Neo and Deep Cut often take other agent’s thing and pull it out when that person asks where it is and have this “HAHA LOOK WHAT I HAVE!!” attitude. But had to permanently stop once Captain gave them a “stern talking” for taking Soule’s crutches and shoving a (Marina’s) blender in Olivia’s face.

Callie and Marie (more often Marrie) often look at the team and feel this sense of pride and accomplishment. Their all basically family to eachother and their the hidden world that everyone can come back to that no one needs to know about

Neo wants to start a ranked team with the other agents. Is patiently waiting for Olivia to mentally recover and Soule to physically recover but they all are already planning everything in advanced and have already officially entered their team under the temporary name “Platoon”

Even thought the squid beak is an undergound team, hidden away from society, it does leak out in certain areas. Mostly rumors from octolings who were there when Shinji and Soule fought Octavio. So there’s this sort of a faint “public perception” picture of at least Captain and 4. Although there may or may not be a certain group of youngsters trying to get a lead on these mysterious figures… 8 and Junior aren’t in the public eye however.

All the agents genders are weird AF. Even Olivia who’s cis and identifies WITH she/her really doesn’t care about pronouns and they will all refer to eachother with “ma’am”, “mister”, “queen”, “king”. They all recognize that part of it is keeping their identities hidden from the public so the fluidity of all their genders just conveniently helps with that

Everyone thinks that Marie is lowkey into Soule but he’s oblivious. Callie brings up the stats journal ALL the time. She even slipped Deep Cut a few dollars to spy on Marie for a few days when she went to Inkopolis square to visit Soule in the hospital and check up on Olivia for Shinji. 4 and Callie like to joke about what Marie’s said to both of them

As someone who can’t draw a straight line I be envious but I’ll stick to what I love. Which is why you’re here 🤭Let’s get into it!

Joker is used to you bent over your drawing pad, stylus in hand (wrist brace on; carpal tunnel ain’t no joke! I know from experience 👀) that the visual of you is second nature to him when he walks through the door

He knows when you have your headphones on and your tongue is sticking a bit out of your mouth, that it’s drawing time. He leaves you be until you come to him to ask for constructive criticism. J is always honest and tells you things no matter if it hurts

You shove the pad into his face and begin rambling about if the shading is off, are the lines too harsh? What about the anatomy because you HATE drawing (insert) maybe you should focus attention away from that by drawing a secondary figure?

“I could add more to the background or maybe soften the edges? What do you think? Should I just start over?”

Joker knows you’re the toughest critic regarding your own work so he genuinely tells you it’s great. The shading is amazing and he personally likes the outline still visible through your signature style. It makes the whole piece feel more natural that way than full on illustrated (he’d hate for you to be called out for using AI) 🙄🙄 he’d probably kill someone for real for flaming you

He subtly reminds you to add your watermark signature to the artwork in a unique way because you forget to when you critique your work so much.

You are constantly on your drawing pad day in and day out and it’s not the latest tech so… you run into a problem early on: it breaks.

You don’t tell Joker since you’re been saving up for a new one for a while now but…. you’re not quite at your goal. It’s all good, you take a break from drawing and focus on another skill

Rest assured Joker instantly notices you’re not drawing (how dare you; he adores your work!) and goes out and buys steals the most state of the art equipment for his bunny.

I’m talking a rig that the professionals use with all the bells and whistles. It’s already set up at your workstation the following morning and your head over heels thanking Joker with hugs and kisses

Joker fully supports your craft and knows it’s your source of income sooo he uses different accounts to commission you for the most random artwork so you stay getting paid and he helps you draw out of your comfort zone while ultimately improving as an artist

You are none the wiser and people start to notice your work with the endless flow of commissions Joker asks for. He may or may not leave your username/digital card in the most random places across Gotham. It’s free exposure at this point.

Joker doesn’t get tired of listening to lore about your OCs and their world. He knows so much about each character that Frost, Mac, and Neo are fully convinced they’re real people with how much J talks about them.

“OC’s name went viral the other day. I think it’s because of the new uhh, underwater.. ani-mation Y/n made. Very err crisp.”

“Is you talking about Y/n’s drawings?” Mac asked.

“It’s noT just a drAwINg!” Joker quickly defends your work.

Mac’s dumb comment prompted J to threaten ask them to pull out their phone and subscribe to your Pateron account. And it better be the highest tier or risk J’s wrath. He pays them enough to afford a monthly subscription and it’s worth every penny

The four of them spend the rest of the night scrolling through your online portfolio. They oo and ahh over the hard work you created. You are beyond talented.

A low level goon knocked on the door and got their attention but was floored by the illustration shown up on the projector. It looked like a literal masterpiece. It was so detailed and some elements were animated, he asked for the artist’s link.

Joker was forever grateful you used a pseudonym for your work so he had no issues of your identity being compromised by association

Neo provided them your username, lixh0useart on all platforms and told them to get back to work. They did while spreading your work like wildfire amongst the others

That same night you called J screaming in joy to tell him about all the new Paterons and commissions you got! You were on your way to being an artist full time and Joker couldn’t be more proud.

Isagirin meta part 5

Part 1 detailing Isagi's first meeting and match with Rin here

We're now at Part 5 of this meta/manifesto. This section covers the remainder of the Blue Lock vs U20 match, the chapters of the mini-holiday they get after that, up until Isagi and co. return to Blue Lock for the start of the Neo-Egoist League arc.

Second Half (C126 - 148)

Isagi and Rin walk out together, and Rin immediately notices Shidou's presence on the field. They have their usual spat, with Shidou calling him under lashes junior (fourth nickname now, and third from Shidou) and a brocon this time.

(Isagi's seen enough of their fights that he panics right away).

Sae kicks off the U20 team's offense, and they get through to the penalty area with Sae, Shidou and Sendou. Niko gets a yellow card from blocking Shidou, who almost loses his temper and goes after him.

Sae successfully reins in Shidou's temper, and when Shidou demands the free kick, challenges Shidou's thinking. He gives Shidou advice about aiming for the 'most realistically possible' and 'ideal' play. Hearing that, Shidou concedes the free kick to Sae, and dashes on to the field. Chigiri is the earliest to notice and react, but fails to stop Shidou from scoring.

Isagi realizes that Sae and Shidou's teamwork was what he's been aiming for since the Blue Lock Eleven tryout match, based on Hiori's advice. Niko and Chigiri then gets subbed out for Reo and Hiori.

Blue Lock pushes through again. While Aiku defends Rin, Hiori passes to Nagi, who then gets blocked by Niou, (he's uncharacteristically grumpy too, because he lost an opportunity with being able to use Rin as rare bait), then swiftly passes to Isagi who’s been shadowing Rin.

Aiku blocks, and the U20 team counters. Sae passes to Shidou, but it gets intercepted by Reo who copied Aiku’s moves and sent the ball out of the field. When Sae passes to Shidou again, Reo irritates Shidou and successfully limits his scoring chances (guess all those matches with Shidou after losing to him in the 2v2 paid off). Gagamaru sends the ball back to midfield, but its intercepted by Sae, who passes yet again to Shidou. Shidou tries again, and after Gagamaru’s dive, manages to get into flow and score his second goal. Shidou, elated from the goal, jumps onto Sae’s back, and in true anti-touch Itoshi fashion, Sae immediately puts distance between them by unceremoniously tossing Shidou off his back (lmao).

Rin seethes from seeing Shidou and Sae's interactions. Isagi, on the other hand, runs up to Ego for advice, and Ego responds that Blue Lock has already won by making themselves known in this match.

And his response is, well, lukewarm, to say the least.

'The future doesn't matter. Losing here is the same as dying. And we're not gonna accept death just yet...! I only care about being the best in the world...!'

Isagi at his fiercest thus far, for sure.

In response, Ego substitutes Otoya for Barou, strengthening Blue Lock's offense. Rin too, has the team change tactics, telling the forwards to rush in and attack as they please.

'We'll win, even if we have to crush each other to do so.'

Rin and Isagi trade passes, until Rin passes back to Hiori. Seeing Isagi open, Hiori makes the pass, which gets stolen by Barou, who fails his shot. Yukimiya picks up the stray ball, and his shot gets blocked by Aiku, who gets into flow. We get Aiku’s backstory, then Rin gets the stray ball again. While Aiku moves in to stop him Isagi comes up to support Rin, and it prompts Aiku’s monologue that ‘they’re a duo so good it pisses him off’.

Rin ultimately doesn’t manage to get past Oliver, and the ball goes, once again, to Sae. Karasu stalls Sae, and the defenders mark the U20 strikers. Reo blocks Shidou well enough for Gagamaru to then successfully fend off Shidou’s latest shot, and Reo steals possession of the ball, sending it back to Nagi who's at midfield.

With the field in disarray, Blue Lock pushes forward, and Isagi monologues about finding the ‘thread’ of this match, to score his own goal. Karasu comes up to help the forwards, and Isagi passes to Nagi, who has to pass back to Isagi because of the defenders rushing in to press him.

Then Sae comes out, seemingly out of nowhere, to block Isagi, and he identifies Isagi as the ‘heart’ of Blue Lock, even complimenting Isagi’s intelligence. Isagi pushes forward, and as he attempts to shoot Sae upsets his balance. Three guesses as to who comes running in to help.

"Isagi!! Look at me!!"

Isagi passes to Rin, but Aiku blocks him. Then from the sides, Barou rushes in, steals the ball, and scores the equalizer for Blue Lock. Blue Lock celebrates the goal, and Barou explains how he got to that point.

Barou: ‘I just moved from start to finish with the intent of devouring you. When my style of focusing on you was read, I moved on to the next stage of that. Meaning I have to hunt the plays you made ‘when you evolved’. Not that I can predict what you’ll do when that happens. But I know for a fact that there’s a guy who can. Itoshi Rin. That guy would definitely react to however you evolved. By targeting that relationship, I could get in front of the goal… and I waited for when you would pass to Rin.’

Isagi: ‘So if you’re supposed to be moving while focusing on me… how do you visualize that? Stuff like Rin’s movements, positioning and all that…?’

Barou: ‘Huh? What are you on about, scrub? You and Rin are so synchronized you already look like one and the same.’

Isagi: ‘What?’

Barou: ‘It’s simple, really.’

Rin [background]: ‘…’

Barou: ‘To me… Rin is just another Isagi.’

Isagi’s expression matched mine as I read this bit, honestly. This is the natural outcome of Isagi and Rin’s mind reading, everyone, brought to you by Barou Shouei. Melding so well with each other that they basically become the other person (in Barou’s Isagi-obsessed mind, at least). And he's not the only one to do that, either. Nagi did it in the 4v4 match. Nanase did it in the Blue Lock Eleven tryouts. It's a legitimate tactic, y'all.

Isagi comes to the realization that to beat the U20, there needs to be a chain of ‘trances’, and he needs to move believing in the others overcoming their own challenges. Meanwhile, Itoshi the elder handily nixes the U20 coach’s plan of a new substitution, and Itoshi the younger seethes with frustration over not scoring again.

Last 15 mins of second half (C139)

Rin understands that at some point, the team, and the game, has begun to revolve around Isagi – from Karasu’s pass, to Nagi’s, then finally Isagi’s pass to he himself once Sae blocked Isagi, that got intercepted by Barou, leading to their 3rd goal. Rin’s furious, but also stressed and straining – see the teeth clench here, telling himself that he won’t be devoured by Isagi.

On the other hand, Isagi’s thinking about the exact opposite, how Rin is still the center piece of the match. Rin’s presence soaks up the attention of the U20 defenders, allowing Isagi to move freely around him, and it’s when Rin gets into gear that the rest of Blue Lock starts amping up their offense as well. He also understands that he needs to replicate the phenomenon from earlier to score successfully. Then we have the iconic page of the both of them thinking that they’ll devour each other and become the main star.

In response to Barou’s goal, Sae decides to turn up the heat and his game play. He easily blitzes pass Nagi, Isagi, Karasu and Barou, dodging Rin’s sliding tackle as well.

This stresses Rin further. Isagi's growing presence in the match, Sae's superior skill, the game that's almost over but still tied, with the possibility of Blue Lock's defeat at hand. Rin thus chooses to ‘synchronize’ with Sae, and figure out his intentions and method of destroying Blue Lock. Rin then accurately predicts Sae’s pass to Shidou, even getting himself hurt (that was a nasty collision) to stop Shidou from scoring. Even Sae is shocked by it.

Karasu tries to get Shidou carded for it, though the referee disagrees (nice try, though, Karasu).

Isagi immediately notices the change in Rin, realizing that Rin's moving with the intention to block/defeat Sae, admiring him for it and understanding that Rin is now evolving (like a pokemon)

Reo passes the ball back to Nagi at the midfield, and Isagi latches on to the changing game flow and circumstances, with the current evolution of Rin’s play style. And after a very long time of minimal presence in-game, Bachira comes up again (yes, I missed him a lot, Bachira’s fun).

Isagi gets the ball, and Bachira surges forward, taking what is normally Rin’s place on the field. Isagi is mindful of that, so much so that Barou spots an opportunity and comes in to steal. That prompts Nagi’s dissatisfaction (‘Quit it! After all Reo went to get the ball back for us!’ be still my Nagireo heart), and Bachira gains possession of the ball again. He bypasses the U20 defenders and shoots, but Sendou blocks his shot.

Having yet to catch up to Isagi and the others in the front, Rin defends the pass route from Sae to Shidou. Sae passes to the other U20 forwards instead, and when the ball goes to Sendou, Barou and Nagi block it with a spectacular head crash.

Isagi’s back to defend against Sae, who passes to Aiku. But just like when Aiku blocked him earlier, this time Rin intercepts Aiku’s shot with a sliding tackle.

‘Can’t believe you reached that, self-centered captain.’

‘Sorry, but I’m the little brother of someone self-centered too.’

As the game resumes with a corner kick off, Rin thinks that he has to overlap his thought processes with Sae’s as he struggles to beat his brother. Yet he’s also conflicted: he’s the only one who can keep up with and stop Sae, and if he doesn’t stop Sae Blue Lock will lose. However, if he focuses only on beating his brother, he won’t be able to score his own goals either.

Note the focus on Isagi’s back here.

Then Rin’s reaction:

C144: Libido

*looks at chapter title* uhhhhhh.....

Hiori’s gotten the ball, and as he’s prepping to pass, Rin comes in and steals the ball from him, blitzing past the rest of his teammates and surprising them. Realizing that the person whom he needs to crush is himself, Rin undergoes an evolution – entering his own ‘flow’, as it were. Sae too, notices the change in Rin. Isagi comes over to match up with him, but Rin ignores him, focusing instead of breaking through the U20 defenders by himself. He gets through Neru. Interestingly, as he goes up against Darai, he passes back to Isagi, who then passes back to Rin as well. Here, also, he stops Darai from turning with a hand and uses a backheel trap to stop Darai, He bursts through Niou’s charge. At this point, Nagi and Karasu have also both cottoned on to Rin’s change. Ego then notes Rin’s flow – a football that destroys hideously, one that uses his opponents strong points against them. A clear parallel and antithesis to Sae’s style of football.

Facing Aiku, the last defender, Shidou comes in and helps to block Rin’s assault (also a new nickname, which brings the count to five now? I think?)

Isagi comes to back Rin up, but Rin ignores Isagi. Shidou also calls Isagi ‘lover-boy’ here. So, with shipping goggles on, and after so many instances and chapters of people remarking on it I’m going to declare that Isagi is Not Subtle At All where Rin is concerned.

Rin makes the shot, but it doesn’t go through, and Sae gets the rebound, with one minute left in-game. Sae bypasses Isagi, Barou and Nagi. Karasu stalls him, and in this moment, Isagi notices Rin going in for yet another showdown with Sae, and gets a ‘prediction’ or ‘premonition’.

Meanwhile, Rin, still in his ‘flow’, finally gets the conversation with Sae he’s snapped at Sae for in their first showdown, but Sae is still cruel and disparaging to him, telling Rin that that’s as far as his ability gets, and that Rin would have been happier if he stayed home and the best Rin can ever do is live in his shadow. Rin violently rejects Sae’s words.

C147 - 'last strike'

An evolved egoist Rin faces off against Sae, and wins. He gets the ball out of Sae’s possession, a feat no one in-game has managed thus far.

And that stray ball lands right into Isagi’s waiting arms (or legs, as it were).

Also the whole chapter??? A bomb in terms of the art. No words at all, besides the Itoshi siblings memory and the final narrative words declaring the end of the match, and consecutive double page spreads of Isagi making the shot, and getting the goal and win for Blue Lock.

C148 - C155 (After the end of the Blue Lock 11 vs Japan U20 match)

Blue Lock celebrates the win. Shidou questions Sae on why he didn’t pass to the front immediately. Aiku asks Isagi about his play. Isagi informs him that yes, he was aiming for Aiku’s blind spot, while looking for a place that he could score instantly. And finally, he believed that Rin would defeat Sae.

Rin watches Isagi shaking hands with Aiku, and Sae comes to talk to him again. But it’s not the talk Rin expects. Instead, Sae acknowledges and praises Isagi for being a striker that could even call forth Rin’s instincts, the striker that Japan was waiting for. Meanwhile, Isagi gets his moment in the paparazzi limelight, declaring that he would lead Japan to victory at the U20 World Cup.

In the locker room, Ego says that Rin’s awakening broke everything apart, and that only Isagi was able to respond to it, a mirror to what Barou said in the match about how he got his goal, about Rin being able to keep up with, and respond to Isagi’s evolved plays. He then tells them that things will get more heated in the future, and to prepare themselves. Anri informs them about the celebratory buffet she had prepared for them, and as everyone’s leaving the locker room, Isagi is the only one to notice Rin still lingering behind all alone. Bachira realizes this, then tactfully says that they’ll go on ahead, leaving Isagi to talk to Rin alone.

Isagi takes the chance to talk to an upset Rin, trying to comfort him, saying that the goal happened as much due to Rin’s efforts as his own trust in Rin… which, unfortunately, is the wrong thing to say to Rin right now. Rin declares Isagi his rival, and that he’ll kill him. Isagi maturely doesn’t escalate the situation further, telling Rin that he’s welcome to try and leaves Rin to cool down on his own.

Phase One of Blue Lock is thus complete. Blue Lock and U20 get two weeks off, and Isagi meets up with Bachira and Chigiri in Shibuya during this time. We learn that Blue Lock’s become famous, they run into what feels like half of the other Blue Lock members as well, jump Nagi at the arcade, come across the U20 team at karaoke, and have a bowling match with them. All in all, fun shenanigans.

[On a side note, Reo and co. were talking about a cutting-edge style summit, the stock market, and futures. This group is clearly the ones from the upper class.]

Halfway through the bowling match, Isagi leaves, and he meets up with his old friend, Tada, the one whom he passed to in the very first chapter of the series. When Tada says that Isagi was lucky in picking up the stray ball from Rin and making that last goal, it upsets Isagi, and he notices how he and his view of the world has changed significantly from Tada.

After this, we get the hint of Ego’s upcoming entertainment project with Blue Lock, phase two, before the story cuts to Rin.

Rin checks up on news about Sae, and muses over the match. He recognizes that he beat Sae, but he was one step short of something to score that final goal, and doesn’t know the ‘awakened’ him that beat Sae. He’s also still hung up that Sae acknowledged Isagi, and that Isagi ultimately ‘won’, and not him.

Back to Isagi: we see his parents supporting him, and Isagi, too, ruminates on his experiences in Blue Lock, before declaring that he wants to live in Blue Lock and continue pursuing his dream of becoming the best in the world. He gets the message of the restart of the Blue Lock project, and the arc ends with the Blue Lock members returning to the project’s site.

In summary for the Blue Lock 11 vs Japan U20 match:

The match’s main focus and character development was on Isagi, Rin, Sae and Shidou, with a bit of Aiku, though the rest of course gets some spotlight when they’re due.

We see Isagi and Rin’s developing teamwork on the field, as well as the increasingly fierce competitive tension in it, primarily instigated and upheld by Rin. Throughout the match, Isagi and Rin build up the team’s offense together, both through excellent teamwork initially, then ultimately, when the chance to score occurs, by pursuing their own thing. While Isagi targets Aiku as his main ‘challenge’, Rin’s focus from start to end, is almost solely on Sae.

Shidou subs in in the second half, and immediately, in combination with Sae’s plays, wind up putting Blue Lock 2 goals behind. It’s also the first time we see Shidou move so freely on the field, and enter flow. We learn his mindset towards the game, and though he falls off the radar somewhat after Barou gets subbed in as well, he still actively hinders Blue Lock’s efforts.

On Sae, we learn that he is clearly a step above the U20 members and the Blue Lock members. He successfully worked together with Shidou, the one person none of the other U20 and Blue Lock members could deal with. No one really successfully defeats him in this match, although Rin does become his biggest obstacle after Barou’s equalizing goal, and Rin’s win was at the very end of the match, after he awakened, and not, from the looks of C152, one that he himself can fully grasp the mechanics of. There are also many instances where Sae could have scored throughout the match, but chose not to.

Rin, too, is clearly still coming into his own as an egoist. Compared to the Second Selection Arc, and the pre-U20 matches against the World Team (where he was thoroughly outclassed) and tryout matches between the top six, this is where Rin is really pushed and challenged. As captain, he makes the tactical calls in game with the other Blue Lockers. He challenges Sae to a 1v1 and loses, and Sae mostly ignores him throughout the match up until the last thirty minutes. When the game clearly begins to revolve around Isagi, he starts to feel the pressure, further compounded by Sae choosing to step up his play. He’s pushed to his limits and is forced to choose – try to keep scoring himself and potentially lose the whole game, or focus on dealing with Sae for the sake of the team. He chooses the latter, which ultimately leads him to his ‘awakening’, but while Rin realizes that he doesn’t have to defeat Sae alone, as the rest of Blue Lock is there to back him up, he also finds it ‘disgusting’ (no power of friendship allowed here yet, folks). His choice to challenge Sae, and the added challenge his growing rivalry with Isagi causes him ultimately leads him to awaken as an egoist and get into flow.

Isagi on the other hand, is still very much the underdog here, despite how it seems with that last goal. He doesn’t get many chances at scoring a goal in the first half, and in 1-on-1 situations he never really comes out on top of anyone, and moves more as a supportive relay for Rin and the rest of the team overall. It’s only when Blue Lock gets cornered with Shidou and Sae’s combo, and Barou comes out, that Isagi gets to build up his plays to the point of getting to shoot a goal himself, which is reminiscent of Rin’s own play style in the Second Selection Arc. Even at that point, he loses to Sae (the shoulder tackle that broke his balance), and the equalizing goal ultimately went to Barou instead. In the last minutes, where Rin goes into flow, Rin also refuses his support and defeats the U20 defenders on his own, but fails to get the shot. He thus replicates Rin’s success in the 4v4 in the Second Selection Arc, by positioning himself accordingly to his belief that an awakened Rin would defeat Sae, and gets his day in the limelight as the hero of the Blue Lock vs U20 game.

The next part will be the final part of this meta, and details the ‘why’ of what draws me, personally, to the Isagirin or Rinsagi ship in Blue Lock, my opinions on the narrative importance of their relationship to the story of Blue Lock as a whole, and my own speculations and hopes of the future of Blue Lock's story development.

I tried to resist this one. I failed. I brought up on Reddit that the correct answer for Neo Champion Dawn, Lucas, and Barry is Dawn/Mesprit, Lucas/Uxie, and Barry/Azelf. I stand by this. But there’s a good chunk of people, I think, who view Barry/Uxie as the more obvious one, and therefore Lucas/Azelf. But this is dumb and I’m going to complain.

Thematically, the point of the aspects of spirit is that your protagonists embody all three. That everyone has all three in some measure, and that these are positive traits that you work on and improve at. Some are more aligned than others. For Barry, it’s willpower. His entire motivation is to become a great battler, and surpass his father; he is driven largely by his willpower. For Dawn, as the set protagonist for Masters lore, it’s Mesprit. Especially with Platinum, it’s made very obvious that Cyrus’ anti-spirit stance is a matter of emotions. Willpower and Knowledge are on the chopping block for the greater good, but as a tech guy who operates with high knowledge and a grand ambition, it’s pretty cleat that Cyrus’ problem is emotion. As the foil, Dawn’s emphasis is on emotions, aligned with Mesprit. This is why Mesprit’s the first thing you go after, and why it’s the one that hovers around you in the Distortion World. This leaves Lucas, the professor’s assistant, as the one aligned to knowledge. He helps you as you set out by teaching you basics, and is seeking knowledge to support the professor.

But there is significance to which aspect they’re sent to save. It’s just not the one they’re aligned to. Because Barry goes to Uxie, but the idea of Lucas with Azelf doesn’t align; Lucas, as the assistant, goes to Mesprit. Dawn, the protagonist, goes to Azelf. The question is, if that’s the layout, why is this significant for each character?

Because it’s their weak point.

Let’s start with Barry, the obvious one. Barry is very motivated by self-improvement, but is unflinchingly kind. He’s quick to offer letting you have a Pokemon even if he can’t, because he was the one to be reckless. He’s the one ready to rush into things at the drop of a hat, for the sake of a friend or a Pokemon in need. Barry’s mostly aligned to willpower, but is high on the emotional scale too. Barry’s issue is not thinking things through. Think about his approach to strategy: “Always hit your opponent, never get it.” Then later, “Remember that strategy I told you? It didn’t work for beans!” Barry’s not the type to think things through. He reacts. He’s a good person, and quick to jump to Uxie’s aid, but he’s unable to stop and assess what is needed or what he’s up against, and loses. Even faced with this, his approach is very aligned to willpower; the drive to improve and protect the things he cares about. He has to learn how to take things a little slower and be a little more analytical, but he never falters in being mostly about willpower.

Lucas is a bit more subtle, but his dialogue I think shows a similar profile. Again, he’s very knowledgeable, and he has a clear goal in supporting the professor. Lucas’ weakness is emotion. A lot of his dialogue is very downplayed or self-depreciating. “Yeah, I doing great. Not.” Stuff like that, where he compares himself unfavorable to the protagonist, suggests some challenge with managing negative emotions. When he tries to save Mesprit, Dawn will come to his rescue, and Mars twists the knife, asking as if Dawn were his girlfriend. And Pokemon does love pairing its protagonists, so there’s reason to suspect maybe this is something he feels, but being self-depreciating, doesn’t feel like he measures up. But it’s worth noting, when he makes his stand...he doesn’t talk that way after. He’s a bit more mellowed out. So again, his alignment is mostly knowledge, but going to Mesprit was to improve what he struggled with.

That leaves Dawn. The protagonist is silent, so we can’t really make clear assumptions, but follow me on this one. What is the protagonist’s goal? Beating the league, I guess. Then what? Don’t really have one. Effectively, you’re going through the motions, especially if you’re a veteran player familiar with the structure. Barry has the goal to surpass his father, and Lucas has the goal of supporting the professor’s research, but Dawn? Dawn doesn’t have a clear end-goal. Nothing specific drives her. Until you fail to save Azelf. Then the goal is stopping Galactic from hurting anyone else. Again, it’s refining the weakest aspect.

All three of them hold all three aspects of spirit, just like everyone, but they’re not all present in equal measure. Their alignment is pretty clearly Dawn/Mesprit, Barry/Azelf, Lucas/Uxie, but their rescue missions are allocated to what they needed to refine to be ready for the trials ahead.

Protag Teruya AU - Sora Design

Hi, Sora!

With Teruya as the Protag and Akane still alive and running around, Sora’s role and creation is very different compared to her canon counterpart. And because Mikado takes on the support role in the story, her reason for existence must also be different. So I thought, “Why not change Sora’s design? You know, for fun.” So I did.

Since AI!Mikado doesn’t exist in this AU as Mikado would have no reason to fuck around with the Alter Ego program (and Kokoro would probably keep him away from it so he didn’t catch onto her plans of reviving Utsuro through a killing game with said program), I ended up just...combining Sora and AI!Mikado together. She’s still the Sora we all know and love, she’s just more of a chaotic gremlin that likes to banter with her father, Mikado. And since their relationship in this AU is far better than the one in canon, for obvious reasons, I felt it was best to represent how close they really are by making Sora look a little like her creator. Her hair has a more wavy texture, her eyes are flatter and a paler shade of brown, and while her hair is blonde to represent AI!Mikado’s design, it still fades to gray like her creator’s hair. And as a nice little reference to Mikado’s mask, I gave Sora a punctuation mark underneath her eye, except it’s under her left eye and is an exclamation mark instead of a question mark. It helps make her design feel like her own while still having a clear connection to her creator. While her design is heavily based off of Mikado’s, Sora is still Sora with her low ponytail and scrunchie and her plaid collar, sleeves, and skirt.

Because Akane takes the role of the 16th student and Teruya is the Protag, Sora doesn’t get to participate in the Killing Game herself. But frankly, that’s probably for the best as there was a likely chance the Wheel of Fate would’ve sacrificed her at some point. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a role in the plot! If anything, she’s been trying to get into the Neo World Program from the outside to help stop the killing game or just contact somebody to try and help them escape with a reset code. I won’t go into further detail for spoiler reasons, but just know that she becomes a lot more important in Chapter 6.

Btw, her name Sora is actually an acronym. S.O.R.A. stands for “S.upportive O.bservant R.ecovery A.ssistant.” :]

My headcanons

I said I liked other dorms too and this is me trying to prove it

literally just the basics like where I think they’re from in our world equivalent and gender/sexuality type stuff unless I get inspired

also yay I finally worked out formatting

Heartslaybul:

Riddle: either a trans man or a trans woman I don’t make the rules. I feel like Riddle wouldn’t care much about gender so long as he loved someone but doesn’t know how labels work (sheltered childhood does that to you) definitely British. Ace: Either cis and supportive but will tease you or somewhere nonbinary and masc leaning. I headcanon him as biromantic (no preference) and Demi or grey sexual He’s Latinx but like specifically from Spain Deuce: Genderfluid. But is way too nice to correct anyone. Bisexual with a slight male preference (he likes big muscles) Latinx as well but specifically from Mexico Him and Ace 1000% argue in Spanish in front of their dorm to pretty much everyone’s confusion. It’s heightened by the fact that Ace is using Spain Spanish and Deuce is using Mexican Spanish Trey: Trans male in my brain but really he’s a token cis. Very supportive, though. Doesn’t really care what pronouns you use on him. Sometimes him and Cater will test pronouns for Cater by using them for each other so Cater doesn’t feel alone or like a burden for wanting “weird” pronouns. Identifies as bisexual. For some reason my brain sees Trey one of two ways- as pasty as canon and British like Riddle or black and German Cater: they/them nonbinary. They want to distance themself from the feminine cute but also don’t want to be a macho masculine man so when they discovered the label nonbinary they were beyond delighted. Online they probably go by neos but with schoolmates they are generally referred to be he/him and are too scared to correct anyone. I see Cater as French. Why? I don’t know.

Savanaclaw:

Leona: Cis man but also doesn’t care what pronouns you use. Identifies as gay but if he fell for a woman he would just kinda shrug and change it. Somewhere on the ace spectrum as well but is too lazy to find a name for it. can you tell I’m asexual from this- From around Namibia Ruggie: trans man. If asked what his sexuality is he would say something along the lines of “I’m attracted to a comfortable life and good food” He’s really demisexual. South African Jack: Gonna be upfront, Jack is my least favorite character so I don’t have much to say. This is a cis Good Boy who loves his partners (the first years) very much. Gonna preface this one by saying that since under the ocean gender, sexuality, and number of partners don’t matter much, the whole of Octavinelle don’t care much. In fact, when Floyd first heard about gender he asked if it was edible. If they absolutely had to put a label, this is what they’d go with in my mind Azul: Genderfluid but defaults to she/her. Pansexual and polyamorous. Italian/Spanish I mean look at his name Jade: Trans female. Bisexual with a female preference and polyamorous. Italian Floyd: Refuses to label himself at all for gender because he thinks it’s utterly stupid but goes by he/him. Can’t see a difference between platonic and romantic relationships so he just sort of. Loves everyone? He calls it romantic because what do you mean humans don’t just kiss each other for love? And snuggle? Only one person? Preposterous. Literally doesn’t understand that some people aren’t polyamorous and keeps flirting with everyone, much to the horror of Riddle and Ace when Riddle caught Floyd kissing Ace on the cheek while Riddle was dating Floyd. Floyd explained it and Riddle was a bit confused at first but realized he was also polyamorous upon looking into it. They are both dating Ace now. oh he’s also Italian.

Scarabia:

Kalim: trans female to the horror of her parents. She accidentally came out at a huge family gathering. Bisexual with a heavy female preference. Also has a very hard time distinguishing between platonic and romantic attraction so she just sort of treats everyone like a lover. Jamil is suffering. Jamil: Another definitely trans but I can’t say which. Bisexual and traumatized away from relationships. Also on the ace spectrum and probably the aro spectrum, though he’s not sure.

Pomefiore:

Vil: trans fem but goes by she/he. Really doesn’t like they because she feels it’s dehumanizing. A lesbian. Polyamorous but only in closed circles. German obviously, again look at the name Rook: also trans fem but is just she/her. Also like Kalim and Floyd has a hard time distinguishing and acts like how she is- a little in love with everyone. Though she’s not always the best about flirting and loves Vil and Epel just a bit more than the rest From Northern Africa Epel: yes I know it’s somewhat against canon but I headcanon Epel as nonbinary she/he in order of preference. Okay okay, hear me out. While Epel is super sick of just being seen as feminine and wants to be seen as masculine, seeing Vil makes her realize that being feminine doesn’t have to mean she’s weak and in fact can make her stronger. With that, he realizes he doesn’t have to reject femininity but also doesn’t have to be hyper masculine so people won’t just see him as a girl. Vil calling him a pretty boy AND a pretty may have also had a hand in it /j Norwegian

Ignihyde:

oh my god Ignihyde I have way to many headcanons for them keep it simple yes post crazy amount of headcanons later be warned I have feelings about Ortho Idia: Yet another character I can’t decide if I see as trans male or trans female but he’s one of these (though I tend to go for trans male) He is very bisexual with a female preference. He doesn’t mean to seem creepy in front of people, but he’s too shy to talk to anyone so when he does he comes off as a creep because he’ll shout something like “YOUR CHEST LOOKS GOOD IN THAT!” And run away. He meant it as a compliment but nope most people won’t see it that way Greek Idia is my passion. I will not be taking arguments. He definitely swears in an older form of Greek that STYX uses while gaming so people can’t get mad at him because there’s no way they know it. One time Lilia responded and oh boy panic lead to a deeper friendship OG Ortho: knew he was trans from a very young age, this carried over to the AI and later the combined Ortho soul thingy (post ch 6 ortho) POST CHAPTER 6 Ortho: asexual spectrum and unlabeled romantically. Definitely got a bit of a crush on Vil, though whether that’s aesthetic, romantic, or sexual, Ortho doesn’t know. Greek as well, duh

Diasomnia:

same drill as octavinelle Malleus: A literal dragon. Doesn’t care what you call him so long as you call him. Also doesn’t understand that oh my god Malleus you can’t just kiss (insert partner) on the cheek in plain daylight. Irish Lilia: Genderfluid and uses this to prank people. Has been with every gender and loves all equally Originally from the German area, but moved around a lot to the center of Briar Valley and now lives in Ireland Silver: Goes by he/him for others convince but when Kalim came out and started crying on him in fear after that dinner he immediately switched to she around Kalim and Jamil in support of Kalim. Views love the same way as Kalim, loving a bit of everyone. Born in Serbia but now lives with Lilia and Malleus in the equivalent of Ireland Sebek: cis male but doesn’t mind any pronouns. Polyamorous and unlabeled Half German half Irish

I’m in an Epithet Mood so I got to thinking- how would the rest of the cast react to Floof? Like would they get along with him?

I’m not gonna include Bliss Ocean or Naven since- they already adore him.

Molly - Molly would likely know Floof through Naven, whether it be seeing picture of him that Naven shows her and her friends, or him attending their interpersonal communications classes. Molly would like Floof, he’s quiet and helps out around the shop while the girls have their lessons. He’s also like a walking plushie you can hug- so long as you ask. She’s absolutely fallen asleep while hugging him

Trixie - Thinks he’s a baby werewolf. She’s given him so many charms to help him with his werewolf training, he kept them as gifts even though he doesn’t understand it. I like to think Trixie, after realizing Floof is not dangerous, would think he was lame for a while. She gets over it and likes him again when he makes the Neo Trio snacks

Phoenica - Was scared of him at first because he’s a wolf, and wolves are notoriously evil as fairy tales have said. They also eat sheep! She slowly learns he’s nice though, and comes around. Now she can’t stop hugging him when Naven brings him to lessons. While doing arts and crafts, she made him a friendship bracelet with a little wolf charm on it. She wears a matching sheep one

Giovanni - There are two opportunities where these two could meet. While Floof goes with Zora to Redwood Run, or during Prison of Plastic. Though I feel like he wouldn’t get a good look at Floof during Redwood Run, so we’re going the PoP route for this. Also thinks he’s a baby werewolf, though he does NOT listen to Trixie or Floof himself telling him otherwise. Defends his new werewolf friend. Anytime he sees anything silver, he gets rid of it in an instant. Howls at the moon for solidarity with Floof. Overall, thinks he’s cool and can’t wait to see the werewolf he grows into

Sylvester - In canon, these two wouldn’t meet. There’s no chance right now they’d have a run in with each other. Though if they did, I can see Sylvie approaching Floof as a wild animal to be studied more than a friend. Takes him a while to realize this. They’d get along though, sit in quiet while Sylvie realizes how comforting he is to hug. Takes a lot less energy than the sheep do.

Mera - Mera would pretend to hate Floof, but goodness he is so cute what the fuck? If alone I like to think she’d hug him pretty tight to help her through any spouts of pain she’s feeling. He’s a good support friend. Also wouldn’t likely meet in canon.

Indus - Has dubbed him the tiny warrior. If he brings lady Mera comfort, then he approves. Also he’s squishy like a plushie.

Ramsey - Likely already knows Floof through Zora trying to hunt him down. He likes the kid enough, but doesn’t get why he hangs around Zora. Though, him being around is usually a good thing since Zora refuses to kill anyone with Floof present. Sometimes if Zora’s gotten called into a job and she’s watching Floof, she’ll drop him off in Ramsey’s office and pick him up later. The two bond over their shared interest in art and Floof’s been showing Ramsey his improvement everytime they meet

Percy - Was under the assumption that he was a dog for the longest time. When she heard him talk she became wary of this strange creature. Though he proved himself to be an upstanding citizen, who unfortunately fit in with the wrong crowd. Likes that Floof sees how cool it is to be a law abiding citizen (he thinks her sword is cool and she doesn’t realize THAT’S why he thinks she’s cool)

Rick - After Naven hires Rick to work at STEM and offers him a place to stay, Floof became a babysitter of sorts for Rick. He showed him how surface world things worked when Naven was busy. Rick thinks he’s a normal surface world-er and not an animal- since he’s never seen a wolf. This is normal to him. Floof appreciates not having to explain to someone he isn’t an animal for once.

Martin - Thinks Floof is Naven’s dog, though maybe that’s a blessing in disguise since if he found out he was Naven’s son he’d begin asking who the mother was and making uncomfortable comments. He’s very touchy with Floof and our little guy doesn’t appreciate it, especially when he ruffles his fur. Doesn’t help that he’s not gentle as well. He thinks Naven should invest in a muzzle for his pooch since Floof keeps trying to bite him

Lorelai - She thinks he’s as annoying as Naven and her sister. She likes that he takes an interest in her fantasy world though- she’s even incorporated some of his own ideas in her worlds. In different circumstances, they honestly could’ve been friends. Too bad Lori’s got some issues to work out

Kiryu had never planned on actually going to the address that Yusei had given him. He wasn’t sure what changed; what made him decide to take the risk and go back to Neo Domino. He just figured that maybe he should at least try to see Yusei at least once, lest Yusei head back to Crashtown to pester him about “healing from trauma” and “you can’t let guilt rule you.” He considered bolting the minute he knocked on the door. Let Yusei think it was some pranksters. He wasn’t expecting the door to swing open and reveal a busty redhead. Not that he intended to notice her chest as the first thing about her - it was just an impressive chest. “Kiryu-san,” she said, bouncing on her heels. Her smile was brilliant, like a rainbow at the end of a storm. “Come on in!”

“Er, no thanks,” Kiryu started to say before her hand gripped around his wrist, far tighter than he could have imagined possible from such a slight being. It prevented him from heading back to his D-Wheel, and she dragged him in. “You’re… Izayoi, right?”

“That’s right,” she said, and Kiryu couldn't fathom how she could smile at him like this. Shouldn’t she be angry with him? His actions as a Dark Signer would have gotten her killed; would have gotten everyone she’d known killed… and yet she was still smiling at him like he’d done nothing wrong. Why? It put him on edge. “I guess Yusei must’ve told you about me, then?”

It made no sense how casual she was being. He glanced at the walls of the entryway she’d tugged him into. There was a photo of her and Yusei together at some restaurant, his arm around her shoulders in a relaxed manner, beaming at the camera. Another of a pair of twins, both of them tugging Yusei down what appeared to be a boardwalk of sorts with a ferris wheel in the distance with Izayoi laughing next to them. One of Jack with… was that Carly? Kiryu frowned, pointing towards the photo. “I recognize her.”

Izayoi looked at the photo he pointed to and nodded. “I suppose you would, wouldn’t you? Carly and Jack are dating now,” she remarked. She was still smiling. Surely it was coming, wasn’t it? At some point, she’d get angry with him for what he’d done. “It was tough for Jack when she didn’t remember his confession while she was a Dark Signer, but they worked it out.”

The casual mention of it made Kiryu’s stomach churn a little bit. Again, he wondered how she could just be so casual about this. Rage would be better. Rage he could understand. He didn’t understand her serenity. “Look, Izayoi, I’m -”

She shook her head, cutting him off with a quick, “Don’t worry about it.” His confusion must have been etched on his face, because she sighed. Her smile was gone now, and he regretted opening his mouth. No, keep smiling, he wanted to say. He wanted to cram back the words in his mouth. He glanced back at the photos on the wall, a group shot of her beaming with Crow, Jack, and Yusei sticking out like a sore thumb to him. “I.. I know what it’s like to be filled with anger. I… I wanted to hurt people because they’d hurt me. I know you did too. I’ve been there, but… it’s all gone now.”

This took him aback as he glanced back towards her, noting the framed drawing behind her that seemed to depict her and Yusei holding hands with the two twins from the photos on the wall with them. Right below it was a table covered in delivery slips, with a tacky looking paperweight on top of half of them. “But you didn’t try to bring about the end of the world, Izayoi.”

“No, but I did try to kill a lot of people,” she said, a wry smile appearing on her face. “I also tried to kill Yusei when I first met him, you know. I’m not sure if he told you that.”

This was, indeed, news to him. The way Yusei had talked about Izayoi made it seem like Izayoi had never done anything wrong in her life. He supposed that was just like Yusei, however. And then it occurred to Kiryu that perhaps the reason why Izayoi could be so at ease around him was because her perception of him was filtered through Yusei. Yusei, who never had a bad word to say about any of his friends. “He tends to leave that sort of thing out,” Kiryu finally said, followed after Izayoi as she continued further into the house. The hallway was lined with photos, and a new man was in them.

Kiryu noted the tall, blue haired man and wanted to ask Izayoi who he was before deciding it didn’t matter who he was. No, what seemed to matter more was the fact that not one of these photos hinted towards their Team Satisfaction days. This apartment was a far cry from the broken down hovels that they had used to live in. At least Yusei was doing better. He wasn’t sure why that brought him some sense of comfort. Perhaps it was merely the fact that it meant that he hadn’t held Yusei back. Yusei managed to make something of himself despite Kiryu’s shortcomings.

“Coffee?”

Izayoi’s voice broke his thoughts. She’d lead him into an open garage area. A new D-Wheel was in the garage, a red one that looked different from Yusei’s. It was the only one in the room, confirming Kiryu’s suspicions: Yusei must not be home. “No, thank you,” he said, staring directly at the new D-Wheel and trying to figure out who it could belong to. The garage also had a few action figures laying about, in addition to even more childish drawings on the table. Probably both belonged to the kids that Kiryu had seen in the photos.

And yet Izayoi already had two cups in hand, setting them on the table. “Tough, I made you some anyway,” she said, motioning for him to join her. She had a smile on her face like they were sharing a secret. Kiryu had the strangest feeling that he would keep any secret she whispered at him as long as she smiled like that. She winked at him, and Kiryu immediately took the chair opposite from him as she said, “Jack keeps this stupid expensive coffee laying around, and it annoys him when I use it. So I use it at every chance I get.”

She held a finger up to her lips, and Kiryu couldn’t help the soft smile forming on his face. The cup was warm and inviting and so Kiryu took a sip of the coffee. It was warm and soothing, like a long hug. “Who does the new D-Wheel belong to,” Kiryu finally blurted out, unable to hold the question in any longer.

To his surprise, Izayoi turned bright red, and rubbed the back of her neck. “Er, it’s mine,” she said. Kiryu didn’t take Izayoi for someone who was into riding duels, but he supposed it wasn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility. “I recently got my license and Yusei, Crow, and Jack surprised me with it. They built it for me, which was nice.” She moved a delivery slip aside, allowing Kiryu to get a better glance of the name of the company - Blackbird Delivery Service. “Are you still doing riding duels? Perhaps we can have one later! I need all the practice I can get for the WRGP.”

“I thought the WRGP was for teams of three,” Kiryu remarked. He would have thought that Yusei, Crow, and Jack would be on a team together. Unless… was Izayoi on a different team herself? “Yusei didn’t tell me much about what was going on here.”

Izayoi frowned at this, shaking her head. “I would think he would have, considering,” she said, getting up and retrieving something from the desk and bringing over a framed photo. She passed it to him, and Kiryu was surprised to see it was of him, with Crow, Jack, and Yusei. The good old days, the days that he’d wished he thought to savor. “He never shuts up about those days. I hope… I hope you two can properly repair things.”

“I don’t think that’s possible, Izayoi,” he said, placing the photo face down on the table. As nice as the memories were, it also reminded him of exactly how he’d screwed everything up. How he’d blamed Yusei for something he hadn’t done, how it’d nearly killed Yusei. And yet Izayoi still looked at him with such kind eyes, despite the fact it was obvious she cared deeply for Yusei. He almost wanted to hate her for it, but he had no one to blame but himself for Yusei leaving. “It ended for a reason.”

Kiryu expected Izayoi to have a counter argument, but instead she shrugged. “Everything happens for a reason,” she said, taking a long sip of her coffee. She didn’t seem to care about reassuring Kiryu that he was a good person, actually, and it made Kiryu like her just a bit more. If Izayoi had nothing but sickly sweet comments on his goodness, Kiryu might’ve just gotten angry at her. “The past is as it happened. We can only choose how we react to it, and move forward with hope. I made mistakes, you made mistakes, I’m sure even Yusei made mistakes he’d rather not admit to. But Yusei helped me to see that my past doesn’t define my future, and that the future is in our hands to shape.” She looked at Kiryu for a long time, and Kiryu felt as if those eyes were piercing into his very soul. “You also think that you don’t deserve a happy future, do you?”

His eyes went wide at the question. As much as he wanted to deny it, he found himself saying, “After everything I’ve done? No.” He flicked his hair out of his eyes, settling back on Izayoi’s D-Wheeler. Kiryu wondered if Izayoi served as a replacement for him, before deciding that was a mean line of thought. The most obvious difference was that Izayoi hadn’t actually killed anyone, as far as he could tell. “However… you’re a duelist in the WRGP? When did this happen?”

“Crow recently broke his arm,” she said simply, and Kiryu understood now. “I’m temporarily taking his place until he gets better… and thus I try to get in practice every chance I get. I need to be good enough to keep up with Jack and Yusei.”

“In that case,” Kiryu said, setting his coffee down. “Let’s duel.”

Izayoi’s eyes went wide. “Now? Really?”

“Yes,” Kiryu said, heading towards the door. “You want to keep up with Jack and Yusei. Who better to help you with that than me?”

He didn’t bother to look back to see what Izayoi was doing. If she was serious, then he’d meet her outside on their runners. If she wasn’t, then she’d still be at that table. Either way, Kiryu couldn’t stay in that garage, full of Yusei’s new life. He was unsurprised when he saw Izayoi already outside, in a new all leather outfit that Kiryu did his best to ignore. There was a look of apprehension on her face. “Yusei told me what kind of deck you use,” she blurted out, and then she looked away. “It just feels like I should at least tell you what -”

“No,” Kiryu said, cutting her off and shaking his head. “If you know something about your opponent and they don’t know something about you, that is an advantage. Don’t give it up because of misplaced honor.”

Izayoi tilted her head, looking almost like a lost puppy. He found himself torn between being angry at her for having such an adorable look and being charmed by it. He settled for ignoring her instead, settling in on his bike. Instead of pushing further, she instead asked, “Do you already know what kind of deck I use?”

“The most I know is the Signer dragon Black Rose Dragon is in your deck,” Kiryu admitted, figuring it would be pointless to hide his prior knowledge from being a Dark Signer. He kicked the kickstand, revving the engine. Behind him, he heard Izayoi do the same. “While we get to the highway, why don’t you tell me why you were picked to replace Crow on the team.”

Without the ability to see Izayoi’s voice, he was forced to rely on her tone. And worse, Izayoi’s voice directly in his ear from the comm link was doing strange things to him. “It was Yusei’s idea,” Izayoi said, and the fondness in her voice spurred a spike of jealousy that Kiryu couldn’t tell who it was for. “Er, I was second place in the Fortune Cup. Yusei thinks that if I could get that far into a tournament on my first go, I could do just fine in the WRGP.”

“But riding duels take a different skill set than a standing duel,” Kiryu remarked as Izayoi set Speed World 2. A brief glance over its effects told Kiryu this was going to be different from previous riding duels he’d been part of. Izayoi might actually have a leg up by being more familiar with its effects than he was. Heading onto the dueling lanes for a duel felt strange to Kiryu. Something that had once been out of reach to him was now utterly legal for him to do, with no fear of retaliation. He wished he could say it felt freeing but instead it felt like nothing. “Do you feel you can handle it?”

Izayoi sped past him almost recklessly, and Kiryu’s first notice was that she handled her bike the same way Yusei did. As a result, Izayoi took the first corner and the chance to go first. “I summon Evil Thorn in defense position,” Izayoi said, and Kiryu then realized what Izayoi must’ve been ready to warn him about. “I can release this monster to deal 300 points of damage to you.” Instantly, he took a hit. Not enough to make him lose control, but certainly surprising. “When I do, I can summon two Evil Thorns from my deck, but their effects are negated. I set a card, and I end my turn.”

Kiryu was surprised by the quick aggression Izayoi showed. He reassessed her, wondering just exactly how dangerous she was. A thrill ran down his spine at the mere thought of an intense battle, one where she could deal just as much damage to him as he could to her. He drew a card, and glanced at her two monsters and set card. He had no way to ditch his hand to truly make any use of what he had, so instead… “I set a monster and a card,” Kiryu said, glancing at the Speed World 2 effects. A grab bag of useful effects, but he’d need to gain speed to use any of them. “I end my turn.”

He could see Yusei’s impact on Izayoi in the way she was handling herself, but there was a stark difference. Izayoi was much more manic in her dueling and riding, almost like she was afraid. In fact, she glanced backwards at him, as if assessing him. As if assessing the danger. “My turn, I draw,” she said, and she took a moment before she finally moved. “I set a monster face down in defense and end my turn.”

Disappointing, he thought, examining the field in front of him and then the cards in his hand. If he drew a way to ditch his hand, then he could start dealing damage of his own to Izayoi. And he had an idea of just how to do it, if he could draw that key card. And the minute he drew, he knew that he had a shot at victory despite Izayoi’s unpredictability. He couldn’t be sure how Izayoi would react, and he was already at a disadvantage because Izayoi probably knew his deck as well as her own thanks to Yusei. “You hesitated in attacking my set monster,” Kiryu criticized, his eyes narrowing as he tried to figure out her motives for such a move. Three monsters on her field, and a set card and yet she did nothing. “I summon Infernity Beast,” he said. “And I attack one of your Evil Thorns!”

It did no damage, but Izayoi was clearly somewhat rattled. She glanced backwards at him, and there was a look in her eyes that let him know she didn’t have a counter. She turned away, saying, “Is that all? I expected more out of you.”

“If it’s more you’d like, Izayoi, I can gladly deliver,” Kiryu responded on gut instinct, and almost felt a spark of pride when it caused Izayoi to teeter. She was still new at driving her bike, that much was certain. Determination was good, but how far would it get her? “The real question is if you can satisfy me, Izayoi. I set two cards and end my turn.” That left him with one card in hand, and he just needed to ditch it to make full use of his deck. Izayoi would surely know this too.

“Okay then,” she said, and Kiryu noted that Izayoi seemed rattled now. “My turn, I draw!” Again, Izayoi hesitated. It was almost amusing. Part of him wondered if those powers she had were why she was holding back. Was she scared of hurting him? “I use Evil Thorn to advance summon Rose Tentacles,” she said. “And now I activate Ivy Shackles! With this, your monsters become plant type during my turn!And for each plant type monster on the field, Rose Tentacles gains an additional attack! I attack Infernity Beast! Thorn Whip!”

“I activate Depth Amulet,” Kiryu said. “By discarding a card, I can negate your attack.”

“But that only stops one attack since you only had one card left in hand,” Izayoi stated, seeming to find her confidence. “And Rose Tentacles has one more attack! Thorn Whip 2!” Not bad, he thought as his monster was destroyed. “That’s not all, Kiryu. When Rose Tentacles destroys a monster in battle, you take an additional 300 points of damage.”

Izayoi’s monster struck him, and Kiryu was amazed instantly by the sheer power. A small smirk formed on his face, and before he could help himself, he blurted out, “I see you like whips, Izayoi. I wouldn’t mind getting hit by that again.”

“You just might,” Izayoi said, though it was with a strange inflection he couldn’t quite pin down. “I end my turn!”

Kiryu drew, and he had a feeling it was going to be over. She’d done well to keep up with him, he supposed. “I use my face down to advance summon Infernity Destroyer,” he said, and with that, he had no cards left in hand. “Infernity Destroyer deals 800 points of damage whenever it destroys a monster. And it’s more than enough to take out your Rose Tentacles.”

“I activate Doppleganger,” she said, just before Rose Tentacles was destroyed. “I may take 800 points of damage, but so will you!”

Izayoi had 3100, and such a move would leave him with . “Well done, Izayoi,” he said, “However, I activate my trap card, Damage Translation. With it, I can halve effect damage thrown my way. The chain resolves.” Izayoi seemed annoyed. “I end my turn.”

She spun around, the same way Yusei might, specifically to glare at him. It struck Kiryu that Izayoi must’ve learned directly from Yusei based upon the way she was maneuvering her bike. Her dueling was different, but the handling was all Yusei. “My turn, then,” she said, spinning back to look forward. “I draw! I summon Twilight Rose Knight. Next, I use Twilight Rose Knight’s ability to special summon Dark Verger! Finally, I flip up Phoenixian Seed!” Three monsters, all adding up to level seven… a thrill ran down Kiryu’s back as he realized what was going to happen next. “A cold flame envelopes the entire world, black flower, bloom! Synchro Summon! Appear, Black Rose Dragon!”

“Black Rose Dragon,” he repeated, staring up at the Signer dragon in almost awe. Would she use its devastating board nuke? He had a way of dodging that. “I see you’re pulling all the stops, Izayoi.”

“That’s not all,” she said, pulling out a card. “I activate the Speed Spell - Rose Malice. With it, my Black Rose Dragon gains 600 attack and the ability to deal piercing damage for this turn! When it attacks a monster, it won’t be destroyed in battle but the monster permanently loses 600 attack! Black Rose Dragon, attack Kiryu’s Infernity Destroyer!”

Now there was a move he wasn’t expecting. An additional 700 points of damage his way, and his monster was now down to 1700 attack, same as his life points. It didn’t matter, though. Because she hadn’t destroyed his monster, and that was enough if he drew it. Izayoi was almost purring as she ended her turn. Clearly, she thought she might win. “You’ve done extremely well, Izayoi,” Kiryu said as he drew his next card, and smirked. “Unfortunately, it all ends here. I summon Infernity Mirage. I can release Infernity Mirage to special summon from my graveyard two monsters. I chose Infernity Beetle and Infernity Dwarf. Now I tune Infernity Beetle and Infernity Destroyer together. The dead and the living...The moment they meet at zero, the demonic dragon will be released from the cage of eternity. Synchro Summon! Come forth, Infernity Death Dragon.”

It was now Izayoi’s turn to be impressed. “That can destroy my monster without attacking.”

“Yes, it can,” he said, surprised Yusei had mentioned that to Izayoi. “While I may take 1500 in effect damage by destroying it, so will you. And that leaves your field clear for me to attack directly for game. Would you like to call it here, or are you going to see it to the end?”

“I’ll see it to the end,” Izayoi said, sounding almost brave as her Black Rose Dragon disappeared in a burst of vibrant petals. “I’m not one to chicken out.”

“In that case,” Kiryu said, “Infernity Death Dragon, take out the rest of Izayoi’s life points!”

Izayoi came to a stop, staring at her D Wheeler. “Be brutally honest,” she said, sounding a little nervous. “I’m not cut out for the WRGP, am I?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Kiryu said, yanking his helmet off. “You held your own, and if I hadn’t drawn Infernity Mirage when I had, you might’ve actually managed to win. The problem is that you start strong then start hesitating. When you hesitate, you give the opponent time to attack. You can’t give the opponent that gap. Have you ever seen Yusei hesitate?”

Izayoi glanced up from her D Wheeler, a look of surprise at the mention of Yusei’s name. “No,” she admitted. “Jack doesn’t either… nor Crow. And I suppose you didn’t either…”

“Exactly,” he said. “Let’s go again, and see if you can do any better this time.”

With each Duel, Kiryu watched a steady improvement over Izayoi’s skill level. She was a quick learner, and when they took a break, Izayoi had invited him to a cafe across the street from where Yusei lived. She’d insisted on paying, despite his objections. It was how he was now sitting across from a table in a cafe with Izayoi smiling at him from across the table. “I’m sort of top in my class at Duel Academy,” she said, shrugging off his mention that she learned quickly. “You don’t stay on top without being able to pick up new tricks quick.”

“A student,” he remarked, an eyebrow raised. “You know, I never really went to school, and yet I still beat you. I suppose that means that fancy school of yours can’t teach you everything.”

“Instinct isn’t a skill you can teach,” Izayoi said after taking a long sip of her coffee. “Hey… How long are you going to be in town for? I’m sure Yusei would -”

“I know,” Kiryu said, cutting her off. He didn’t need to hear from Izayoi of all people that Yusei would be happy to see him again. “But I got a good look at the life he’s got now. There’s not really room for me in it.” He forced himself to make eye contact with her. “I wouldn’t want to get in your way.”

Izayoi tilted her head, before reaching out to cover his hand with hers. “You wouldn’t be getting in the way, Kiryu,” she said, and it felt like a tidal wave had crashed over him. He was sinking, and he didn’t know which was to the surface. “Seriously, Kiryu. Just stay a few days.”

Her gaze was pulling him in, and he was certain that if he allowed it, she could shatter his walls entirely. There was just something in her that seemed to know him better than he knew himself. As if she saw the potential within him, and was determined to draw it out. It seemed fanciful, however. “I have responsibilities to get back to, you know,” he said, hedging his options. While he might have won on the Riding Duels, Izayoi seemed better equipped for this. “A few days is asking for trouble.”

“Really,” she remarked, a sly smile on her face. “I thought trouble was exactly what you’re looking for.”

There was a dare in her eyes, a challenge that she was putting on the table. And well, Kiryu never backed down from a challenge. “You have a point, Izayoi,” he said, sighing. “Fine. I’ll stay. Just a few days, though.”

“Right, right,” she said, and she looked just a little too happy that he was going to stay. Just what was she playing at? Honestly, he’d like to know. And when she winked at him, he had an idea. Game on, Izayoi.
