You know, it's rather interesting to me that Taylor Swift's parasocial relationship with her fans is honestly more akin to a YouTuber than a writer's. When I scroll through her tag on tumblr/Twitter, it's far more regarding the connection to her personal life/relationship developments than the actual metaphors/fictional story she might be telling. Everything comes back to how her songs reflect back on her relationships with Joe/Matty/Travis/Jake/insert ex-boyfriend here. And what fascinates me about it is that even though she complains about it, she leans into that very perception because it strengthens the parasocial bond.
The marketing for TTPD so clearly being about Joe Alwyn and the songs to Matty Healy. The marketing/video for Red TV so CLEARLY being about Jake Gyllenhaal, with so many of the new lines in All Too Well specifically being digs at him (I'll get older but your lovers stay my age, casting an actor that looks like him for the video, specific lines in I Bet You Think About Me). The fact that songs like Getaway Car and Bejeweled and Gorgeous and London Boy and Lavender Haze being picked apart at time of release and long after for signs of relationships crumbling. The way she uses surprise songs in relation to her relationship development with Joe/Matty/Travis. The damn TTPD "stages of grief" playlists where she deliberately undid/changed the meanings of old songs just to keep her audience speculating on her love life.
It's not sexist to point out that her wielding her love life is a marketing tool and that the strongest connection to her audience isn't the strength of her writing/the composition of her music- it's her deliberate crafting of a connection between her music and her personal life, leaving the audience invested in her music as an extension of Taylor the Person/Girlfriend rather than Taylor the Artist.

the issue with ttpd personally is that I love some of the songs but sadly I've been force-fed her personal life so much, these details keep coming and leaves a bad taste in my mouth
You can't say "1830s without the racist" after writing an album about matty healy
"So high school" is a cute love song, but it's about our xenophobic racist king tk
"I can fix him" have some elements I like but it's about mh and her getting offended she's being held responsible for her problematic actions
"guilty as sin?" is one of my favs, but it reads very different when you know (unfortunately) the context
"so long, london" is amazing, but just like "renegade" she blames joe alwyn for having mental health issues, but also out them to the world which is the worst part of it all
wishing I didn't know the context, but it is practically impossible to engage in any taylor swift space without knowing

“In light of everything that’s happened in the past three months alone, here’s some incredibly valid reasons to be pissed off at Taylor Swift, or simply not like her — as someone who loved her, and loved her music. First and foremost, Taylor Swift is personally burning a hole through the ozone with the amount of CO2 she uses. That’s not even the main point of this video; but this is a graph from 2022 of how much CO2 she produced of her 170 private jet flights, versus the average person. She has spent 70 grand on jet fuel alone. Taylor Swift, alone has used 170 tons of CO2 in the past 3 months. The average person only burns like, 16 tons. That’s not even the main part of this video. The main point of the video is the fact that she has not spoken up about Palestine. And the reason that is so fundamentally frustrating is that Taylor Swift has influence. Quote Brittany Broski, when she also didn’t speak up about Palestine — “if you have a platform, and you have people listening, you have to use it.” It’s criminal to not use it, and Taylor Swift uses it. This is from September 2023. Record-breaking registration numbers from one Instagram post. Literally stating, saying “I’ve been so lucky to see so many of you guys at my US shows recently. I’ve heard you raise your voices, and I know how powerful they are. Make sure you’re ready to use them in our elections this year!” They had a 72(%) increase in 18-year-old registrations. When it comes to Palestine, she’s completely silent. And now that it’s somewhat more socially acceptable to attend Pro-Palestine events, she’s been quietly going with Selena Gomez, but I for one, think that your Instagram is perhaps the best asset you have. If not, money. And I’m sure in a couple months, we’ll learn about how Taylor Swift was quietly setting up foundations for pro-Palestine, and that she was always for the cause and she’s always supported them, but all it takes is one fucking Instagram post. Especially when Israel Palestine is fundamentally a war of narratives. It’s whose story do you believe, despite the mounting evidence that proves that Israel has continuously been doing ethnic cleansing and genocide. They are still maintaining this narrative that they are not doing that. And all Taylor Swift has to do is say “hey, 22 thousand deaths in 3 months? The most in any modern war? This doesn’t seem right.” I don’t even want her to be that leftist or radical, but literally just to ask the question to her largely American audience, when US has bypassed Congress twice to sell millions in arms aid to Israel.  Just for her to be like “Should that many kids be dying, perhaps?” The bar is on the floor, but she still refuses to do it. And the reason why Taylor Swift in particular, not because of the influence that she has and not because of the platform that she has, but why her in particular, is because the IDF continues to use her songs. I know it was a public trend, but the fact that so many occupation forces felt comfortable and confident  to make like, dance edits to Taylor Swift’s music. I think it’s so important how an artist’s music is used because when the republicans wanted to use Eminem’s 8 mile track, he was like “absolutely fucking not, I do not give you consent to do that, and I do not associate with your politics. Don’t do that.” I feel like she should know that her music is being used as the anthem of the occupation forces as they go and bomb civilians. Her, and other artists like her, like Beyonce, who showed her film in Israel, and they’re all like dancing and singing, and saying “you’re not going to break my soul”, whilst they continue to bomb the shit out of civilians have said nothing. And I hope, as I’ve demonstrated in the video, for the people who are going to be like “What’s Taylor swift going to do? She’s not a politician.” Be serious. Be serious. She has a fucking chokehold on at least a billion people. She could’ve said and done way more than what she’s done, and also the CO2 levels." (from: this tiktok*)

posts that will probably get me mauled by feral hounds but I do find it funny how Taylor Swift has managed to somehow convince most of her fans that she is the most oppressed person on Earth when she is actually one of the most privileged. She's literally a white one percenter whose dad is so rich he just bought a chunk of one of the biggest record labels ever once she was signed with it just for funsies. And of course with the CO2 emmissions thing right now it's more obvious than ever that TS holds enough power over literally the entire world than most people can even begin to comprehend. Yet somehow all her fans are convinced that all the petty ego fights she gets in on twitter are actually a Misogyny Issue and she is overly criticized and hated on because she is a woman (which is super unique of her and definitely not something that over 50% of the industry also is)
Like obviously misogyny is real and Taylor, like every other woman, is subjected to it. But there is such a thing as context and when it comes down to it the backlash Taylor faces as a woman is minuscule compared to the incredible amount of privilege and entitlement she has as a white burgeois first worlder cishet able bodied neurotypical thin conventionally attractive etc etc etc etc celebrity, which actually makes her less likely to face consequences for her actions and encounter backlash, not more. Especially outside of a music industry/celebrity-only context
But because she is part of one (1) oppressed group she has managed to milk that for all its worth and convince her fans that actually she has no power, no privilege, no ways to shield herself from well deserved criticism and absolutely anyone who speaks against her in any way or context is just being an agent of oppression against her, one of the most sheltered people in the world. Unironically fascinating

Not Taylor Swift & her team buying fanmade merch during her Eras tour in Latin America and now cracking down on the latine creators that sell fan merch, deleting their accounts overnight WITHOUT any notice/cease & desist, or threatening with legal action so that they take down their accounts/stores on their own.

oh what the hell do you mean she copied olivia rodrigo for one of her songs and to like a super obvious extent. if olivia sues I better not hear swifties complaining bc what you all did to her for cruel summer/deja vu was diabolical and olivia would have every right

The subject of Taylor Swift and girlhood has been marinating in my mind for a while, but it's been amplified now that Israel's genocide of Palestinians has hit the mainstream once again. Becos, who is girlhood afforded to? Think about the adultification of Black girls, the Palestinian girls who are denied the privilege of clean period products and a life where they and their families aren't being bombed by Israeli forces, the many poor Black and Brown girls in the global south who become child labor force, trans girls esp Black trans girls who are often misgendered and the targets of transphobic hate crimes. Girlhood is a privilege.

And let me tell you, I don’t care about Kim Kardashian and her clan but for Taylor to revive an 8 years old beef about her when that woman has already divorced Kanye and mentioning her kids (who are CHILDREN!) is so immature. And the line of “my mom is a saint but she wishes you were death” might you this is a mother that hasn’t spoken your name in YEARS. Swifties be celebrating this then at the same breath paint her as a female activist. This isn’t Taylor coming on top, she’s pathetic and the only reason she’s bringing this drama again is because she’s planning on releasing her reputation recordings next and she’s getting her fans all ready and bothered to do the bullying for her. She’s an opportunist, uses her fan base for her battles and she loves the parasocial attachment her fans have for her and her private life.
Oh you're spot on there. Taylor brings up old beef like a high school mean girl who won't let go of your elementary/middle school awkward phase or screw up. And going after CHILDREN to serve as fodder for her petty squabble is just completely out of line. Most people in entertainment at least respect that rule - no matter how much beef you have with someone, their kids are off limits. Taylor has no such class.
She's absolutely an opportunist, though. That's why she never tells her fans off, even when they're sending literal death threats and spamming random people with racist and homophobic harassment. Because so long as she condones their shifty behavior, her loyal little clone drones will bully whoever Taylor even vaguely dislikes. All she has to do is vague tweet about someone, and her minors descend on them like vultures.
And honestly? She's created such a negative name for herself that unless she's fueding with someone or breaking up with someone, she has nothing to write about. Because nobody who actually does anything with their life/fame wants to hang out with her. So she's dredging up old fights because she's out of ideas, and can't let go of a grudge. She has to be the victim all the time, and because she's always the victim, any time she claps back if "obviously" justified. In her mind, anyway.
She's out of ideas, so she's going to bully another woman (real feminist of her, huh?) over a years-old feud just to get her kicks. It's honestly just embarrassing.

whoosh so taylor is releasing a song with ice spice of ALL people and you just know that some absolutely aloof swifties are gonna come out w some "see she's doing her best to salvage the situation" bullshit. this is a pr stunt at its best and it's way too fast to not be planned. before any of you say any of that they're trying to fix it, if healy even remotely wanted to fix his past then why the flying fuck is he making taylor do it for him? he's a grown ass man and if he truly felt any remorse he is fully capable of speaking for himself. if anything it's j taylor's latest version of performative activism.
edit: this post reached the wrong audience so I'm adding this bc i don't have the time to respond to everyone. #swifties dni

Stop. Stop defending taylor swift for things she did. Stop defending her for associating herself with a racist, sexist, antisemitic piece of shit, and CONTINUING to surround herself with people like that. Stop trying to make excuses and put down the feelings of poc fans during that time. Stop blaming people for holding her accountable to the words SHE said.
If you sit at a table with 10 racists, there are 11 racists at that table.

thinking about the goofy ass situation that is taylor swift’s nyu commencement address. take a walk with me for a moment.
you’re 22. you’ve just graduated from the new york university. you worked your ass off to get in, worked your ass off for the four years after that, and paid a FUCK TON of money because we live in a capitalist hellscape and it’s nyu. you’re on top of the world.
now it’s time for the commencement speech. previous speakers include the former president of the United States, a Supreme Court justice, and the attorney behind a key same sex marriage case. and who is it this year? taylor swift. ok. previous speakers also include pharrell williams and alec baldwin so maybe it’s just one of those years.
then, ms. swift proceeds to make a half an hour long speech in which she only makes profound observations if she can connect them back to her own music. she then references her next album and dips.
ok. that was… weird. but it’s over now (insert taylor swift reference here.) but wait, what’s this? taylor, musician and speech-giver extraordinaire, has suddenly been granted an honorary degree from the school that you just dedicated 4 years of your life and several hundred thousand dollars to.
Neat. Cool. Excellent. If I was NYU class of 2020, Taylor Swift would be to me as Tony Stark is to every MCU villain. The villain origin story. The final straw.

Why are you against taylor swift? I'm just curious.

OK! so basically
1. I just don’t like her music, like I find it rlly bland
2. Her actions rlly suck:
Like:
Saying she stands with victims of SA, even posing on a times magazine cover for #metoo but recently she’s been such good friends with Brittany Mahomes, who told victims of SA to ‘just shut up’ (for context Britanny’s brother in law is accused of SA)
Taylor, by hanging out with Brittany sm, has given her a lot more publicity, which is gross to me. Jackson Mahomes, the guy with all the SA claims against him, is someone who she’s also been seen buddying up with, taking selfies and high fiving
Taylor dated Matty Healy, a known racist, who said awful things about black and POC women. While Taylor broke up with him, she never addressed his behaviour.
She makes a choice to hang out with these people, people who harm vulnerable communities, which leads to her (majority white and young) fandom thinking it’s ok)
Taylor Swift, as you probably heard, has huge carbon emissions. Like huge. She unnecessarily uses her private jet for useless trips.
When 1 person tried to make her climate use more public, they allegedly got sued, claims TS hasn’t yet disputed.
Taylor also sued a blogger who demanded that she denounce white supremacy in 2017
Why was this blogger asking that she denounce white supremacy? Bc swifties, as a fanbase, has some very toxic elements
As a POC, I don’t rlly feel safe in swiftie spaces (especially the ones on Twitter) bc her fandom has a tendency to go after people who don’t like her, especially POC. (Luke going after travis kelces ex, being rude about the Latina’s who criticised TS response to a girl dying at one of her concerts)
I know, ofc that not every swiftie is racist and white, but her fanbase can be, and it does affect the POC who try to criticise her.
Taylor has also done nothing to stop the harassment of her ex Joe Alwyn, with some ven saying she leads her fandom on with the way she releases her songs. If ur fandom is telling ur ex: if I were u I’d kill myself?’ Let get a hold on them!
She’s a billionaire. Enough said.
All in all, you can like her music and vibe to it, TS is someone who you can separate the art from the artist pretty well, unlike some others (cough JK Rowling, cough) but be a critical fan.

“joe alwyn thinks he’s better than taylor” as he should?? he’s been using his platform to raise awareness about the literal genocide occurring right now while your favourite real world billionaire who is a fully grown adult at 34 says some inane shit praising her sexist racist bf and remains silent on the matter while also being complicit in the way the superbowl is being used to divert attention from rafah. and all the while swifties continue to hate on this man for the crime of having a moral backbone apparently. they rlly be acting morally reprehensible just like their fave

i hope people realize that taylor swift did not just have some epiphany on a random monday about dating a known bigot and how telling it was for her own complicity that she was okay with being romantically involved with someone like that. TS is a capitalist and a business brand who knows that continuing to date this man would have eventually significantly impacted her revenue in future album releases and concert sales by continuing to piss off her fan base. and like any large corporate business, she cut out the weak link so it doesn’t impact her future. that being said, if all of m*tty he*ly’s previous comments about black women and other disgusting remarks had been swept under the rug more effectively, i can tell you with almost 100% assurance that she would still be publicly dating him right now
