I hate it here is central to the story because she makes up lunar valleys in her mind, spends all her time there, and ultimately gets ‘saved’ by someone who she actually thinks is like a skylight/alien from another planet. the romanticism doesn’t have to be limited to her inner life anymore! she can express it! she has cosmic love in real life again! until she doesn’t lol.

i hate it here // mattheo riddle x fem reader
playlist : i hate it here - taylor swift
"im there most of the year cause i hate it here"
summary: you and mattheo find yourself laying on the rocky edge of the black lake , giving you a moment of serendipity to show him there is a world beyond the cold castle behind you.
y/n , no specific house , fluff , short!
masterlist tppd series masterlist
you allowed the sound of the waves to drown out all of your thoughts as you found yourself laying amongst the rocks of he black lakes shore , mattheo riddle doing the same besides you.
"do you ever worry theres nothing beyond hogwarts?" he said softly as a silence followed , "i mean i hate it here but what if these are the best years of our lives and we're wasting them hating a place that isnt so bad afterall?"
you listened to his soft , anxious rant before simply turning your head to look at him , mattheo doing the same.
"i like to imagine everything i could do after hogwarts. when im in herbology i imagine my life travelling the world and collecting plants and discovering new ones , in defence agasint the dark arts i imagine chasing a death eater through the streets , i imagine the feeling of catching them - the euphoria. in charms i imagine being a professor , inventing new spells , teaching or working for the ministry." mattheo silently stared at you as you spoke , "the point is , there so much more out there mattheo , not even in the wizarding world , in the muggle world too. it may sound stupid but doesnt being a muggle singer sound fun? or a librarian protecting the acient words that are around me every day , lending people the knowledge of a well known poet or showing them the new world of a fiction novel."
he began to smile as you listed every opportuinity , the adventure of every posibilty flickering in his eyes.
"life doesnt end at hogwarts , thats where it begins." you smiled at him.
he grinned at you , seemingly happy with your response , "no matter what happens when we leave this place , ill be with you. even if you work in a muggle cafe or become the worlds greatest quidditch player , ill be there. i hate it here but i will never hate you."
"good because what we've got going on is a forever thing!" you both laughed as mattheos heart fluttered at the thought of it.
"forever" he smiled.

i was watching chats and reacts, and i do still fully think i hate it here is about taylor and her life and how she feels in general, and that she is indulging in maladaptive daydreaming despite knowing maybe it’s not the most productive, BUT now i do think there is a double meaning. ofc we all picked up that secret gardens and lunar valleys being folkmore and midnight, but they went a step further and interpreted “here” as a metaphor for joe. how he felt tortured in his career because he has to play the game, and he is the one telling her “something awful.” he is the consolation prize because being with him can’t be the real prize, right? she is a popstar, but scared to go outside because of the implications within their relationship, and how she feels trapped so she has to escape this and not write about it by immersing myself in a fake victorian world (reminiscent of 1800s, but it’s painful there too because folkmore is filled with tragedies), and then she goes into midnights because now she’s trying to escape again by dissecting her past.
also, i personally think all of this made her feel stifled in her art, not because these albums aren’t stepping stones (she managed to flourish despite everything), but because she couldn’t have felt she gave it a real try if she wrote about how it’s already over. and this is not to say that she shouldn’t have tried because that person is literally your partner and it would be unfair to give up easily (ignoring how it was unfair that he didn’t try), but that also doesn’t mean it didn’t come with a price.

I think nothing exemplifies this site's commitment to bad faith takes of Taylor Swift better then fact that everyone is circulating that '1830s without all the racists' line as proof that Swift is out of touch and vapid for glorifying the past uncritically/romanticizing it, and then when you actually go and listen to the song, this is the full verse-
My friends used to play a game where
We would pick a decade
We wished we could live in instead of this
I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists
And getting married off for the highest bid
Everyone would look down 'cause it wasn't fun now
Seems like it was never even fun back then
Nostalgia is a mind's trick
If I'd been there, I'd hate it
It was freezing in the palace
And it turns out that Swift is lambasting the very thing people are claiming she's doing- and talking about the experience of making people deliberately uncomfortable by drawing attention to their rose-colored view of the past, while rejecting the idea that nostalgia is anything but a fantasy we use to comfort ourselves without engaging with the reality of what it was like.
Like you don't have to like her music or this album or even her as a person, but when your playing out the 'Coolsville sucks' meme unironically, it might be time to take a step back and think more critically about what is driving your anger at this person.

Feelings are denied, emotions are unseen, and thoughts are considered useless, yet I felt my heart dropping, my stomach turning, and my hands freezing. How much of it is just in my head?
