feels like so much of 2023 for taylor was unlearning central themes in the lakes. answering “take me to the lakes where all the poets (!) went to die” with “actually I can feel myself dying and it’s not worth it and I don’t want or need to retreat to my place of death yet”. answering “I don’t belong and my beloved neither do you” with “no, I do belong and I want to exist in the world!” and on & on & on. I don’t want to bath in insurmountable grief anymore, or find perfect places to cry, or let what should be over stay burrowed under my skin!!!

hear me out: the first time it’s about the song and something else. “drowning in the blue nile” is not only her name-checking the band the blue nile, but also a reference to how she felt like she was drowning in joe’s sadness - hence why she was moving on mentally and having this ~self-endeavor~ (thanks jaime)

the second time she says “he sent me downtown lights / i hadn’t heard it in a while” she’s saying he made me orgasm, i haven’t had that in a while! directly saying her sex life/intimacy with joe had been either nonexistent or at least severely lacking

going from ‘rusting my sparkling summer’ in the smallest man who ever lived to ‘who are we to fight the alchemy’ - and alchemy being the idea that you can transform something into something else, specifically transforming base metals into gold and real gold will not rust, is not lost on me. Going from things that rusted and tarnished easily to something that never will, and maybe her sparkling summer turned into something she couldn’t fight and let it change her, it seems for the better. She’s watching something turn to into something else in front of her, and shes not gonna fight it. She’s gonna lean into it. She’s ready for something better, she’s coming back so strong.
