I was deep-diving through tvtropes and-
Tumblr media
I have no idea how accurate it is because I never played episode Ardyn. But please consider.
AU where Ifrit wakes up, sees daemonified Ardyn and goes "Wait, that was NOT the Plan". And proceeds to burn Ardyn (and most of the lab) in the Holy Fire, purifying him and accidentally-on-purpose giving him Ifrit's Blessing. (It was totally on purpose)
(Canon and the Prophecy are Yeeted out of the window)
Been sitting on this, because this? This is brilliant. Raven, you have no idea how badly I want this.
Ifrit's been dead-ish (you can kill an Astral as hard as you like, they just come back like a bad gil) for thousands of years by the time the Scourge surfaces in Somnus and Ardyn's time. Being dead or sleeping doesn't prevent an Astral from knowing things, so Ifrit is aware of House Caelum, is aware of Bahamut's plan to deal with the Starscourge.
(What does Ifrit think of the Scourge? He once loved humanity, may still love humanity despite Solheim's betrayal. Does he regret that he is not there to help? Does he weep for the children he once nurtured, taught, and cherished? Does he weep for the lives that will be lost?)
(Or does he laugh? That the only one to help humanity combat the Scourge is Bahamut, wholly unsuited to face an enemy that cannot be killed with a blade? That the ones who spurned him will now die to something he could have would have saved them from?)
But Ifrit doesn't care to watch Bahamut's flawed plan play out (doesn't care to watch the children of his Sparks waste away in the night) so he turns away from the goings on.
It's the chill (the feel of his lover's kiss) seeping into his bones that wakes him. He wakes, furious, because how dare she, how dare she after she sided with the rest of their kin, with those traitorous humans.
Only, it's not Shiva.
Through the fire and fury coursing through his soul, Ifrit doesn't recognize where he is. It's a human lab - not the same as Solheim's once were, not the same architecture, not quite as advanced.
He recognizes the son of House Caelum.
Bahamut's Chosen Sacrifice.
And here's the thing: Ifrit is the god of Knowledge. More than the other Astrals, Ifrit's power is to know. Anything and anyone, anywhere and any time.
So when Ifrit looks at Ardyn Lucis Caelum, he knows.
He knows this man's love for his people. The lengths he went to help his people. His love for his lover and his kin. His kin's betrayal. His lover's death. Bahamut's rejection. His own people abandoning him.
Two thousand years locked away in the dark with naught but memories and grief.
Ifrit knows how that old Soldier thinks. Bahamut is War. Bahamut is Duty and Sacrifice. Bahamut will sacrifice this healer alongside whoever his new Chosen one will be.
Ifrit hates humanity. They burned him and time hasn't healed that wound.
But... he loved them once. Mortals who burned as bright as they burned short, sparks of ingenuity in their eyes as they took the first staggering steps he helped them achieve and figured out how to run.
Thousands of years later, a little healer took a gift and used it to save lives in a way it was never intended.
Ifrit looks at Ardyn Lucis Caelum. He sees himself staring back.
Ifrit hates humanity.
He hates Bahamut more.
In the mere second after laying eyes on Bahamut's discarded Chosen King, Ifrit burns the lab in Holy Fire.
His new Spark burns with him.

is. is betty still mortal in this?? WILL SIMON, MARSHALL, AND MARCY OUTLIVE HER????CD SCAIBASI
also, considering marshal and marcy are twins- does that mean all the genderswaps are twins too? (e.g fionna and finn, gary and bonnie- not sure abt jake and cake but it would be funny if they were very salty exes /j)
SORRY ABT ALL THEW QUESTIONS IM ASKING I JUST LOVE THIS CONCEPT SO MUCH HUADIJBSKNFAFD1!!!!!!
So as for Betty, as soon as she realized she was gonna croak faster than her family, she did everything she could to find out how to live forever. Which, eventually, led her to finding out about Prismo. It took her years to finally reach him, and maybe she went a liiiittle nuts learning magic specifically to live through the ages with her husband and children but hey! It worked eventually.
Tumblr media
As for the rest!!!!! Princess Bubblegum, before making her family members (Gumbald, Aunt Lolly, Chicle), did a test run. She made some gum from a tree, not wanting to risk the result of gross genetic mutations from her own dna, and tried to create life from it. And it worked! Gary was created. And once the rest were made, he was the only one that stuck by Bonnie’s side and, you know, didn’t wanna spray her with lobotomy sauce LMAO. So she appointed him to be her royal advisor!! (I’d also like to add that I can’t take credit for his cute little head accessory, he was designed by a friend of mine :) )
Tumblr media
Finn and Fionna are siblings, but not twins. She’s a little younger than he is. Martin waited a bit longer to escape the island with Finn, and Minerva was pregnant with Fionna when he left; she got sick after she was born. Fionna went on to have her own adventures and everything (with Cake ofc, it wouldn’t be the same without her!!) and after the death of their mom, did some traveling of her own. They find each other eventually!

The funniest bit of the entire Fire Nation royal family is how stupid some of their decision are, yet somehow they keep working out in their favour?? Like Sozin loses his boyfriend (the Avatar. The one who keeps the balance) by suggesting the Fire Nation goes to war, and then the Fire Nation goes to war anyway. Ozai’s nephew dies in a presumably horrific way and he believes that’s a brilliant moment to ask his dad to make him next in line to the throne, and when that backfires, his wife saves him and their kids and he manages to become Firelord anyway. Iroh decides the best place to lie low and start a life outside of the war is to hide in the city he, personally, laid a 600 day siege on and become a renowned tea maker, and this would’ve worked out had his niece not taken over the city. He also wants tea SO BADLY while on the run that he canonically takes his chances on a potentially incredibly deadly plant (it’s the deadly plant) and he survives. Zuko’s numerous Impulsive and Arguably Bad Decisions that Somehow Work Out Anyway compile into a list so long I’d have to add a readmore to this post. Iroh II proceeds to prove he really is Zuko’s grandson and thinks it a good plan to firepunch a bomb, before deciding to take down a whole squad of airplanes by like, figuring out how to fly one as it’s flying and doing some good firebending to destroy the planes, and he somehow manages to make it work.
Azula appears to be the only one in the family who didn’t get the strong version of the “Make Impulsive and Dumb Plans that can Never Work Out but Do Somehow”-gene (thanks to Ursa’s DNA probably) and she still lost, largely because of elements outside of her control. Imagine being the spawn of the family who fosters all of the ‘best’ traits present in the line (resourceful, highly intelligent, physically powerful) and you still lose to the uncle who thought it brilliant to become popular in a city that hates him and the brother whose plans can all be summed up as “fuck around; find out; success”, because you didn’t plan for something that ended up occurring but you couldn’t ever have expected. I, too, would cry.

am i worthy of this gift?
shuri x reader
summary: after the birth of your newborn daughter, shuri makes a promise to her, she’d always be there.
ib:
it was around 3– maybe 4am, you and your wife, shuri were laying in bed, soundly asleep, until the sound of your daughter, amani’s, cries interrupted your slumber.
ever since the bundle of joy was born, it seemed like you haven’t gotten any rest, and it looked and quite literally was taking a toll on you. as you groaned and prepared yourself to get up, shuri stopped you.
“lay back down, umfazi, i’ll get her.” she reassured you softly, giving you a gentle kiss on your forehead and throwing the duvet off of her while you laid your head back down on your silk pillow.
shuri steadily walked up to the crib, “hey, hey..” she whispered to the tiny one, picking her up and softly bouncing her in her arms, making her way to the large accent chair.
catch me i’ve fallen in love for the first time
she rocked amani close to her, letting her hear the steadiness of shuri’s heartbeat as she took slow, calm breaths, softly rubbing her back and kissing her atop her head.
soon the girl’s cries turned to hiccups, then to coos.
for you i drop the tough guy shit, on this bus i sit
the queen chuckled to herself, “made all of that fuss.” she teased, smiling down at the little princess. she studied the infants features, god she had to be the most gorgeous baby she’d ever seen, or maybe she was just biased.
“hi omncinci” she whispered, gently wiping off the tears from her daughters chubby cheeks with her thumb.
“you were waking mommy up, you know? she’s been really sleepy..”
amani only stared up at her with her big brown eyes.
the royal shook her head, “i don’t know why i’m talking to you as if you can even comprehend words.” she exhaled, watching the gummy smile spread across the princess’ face. the sight only warmed shuri’s heart more.
reminisce when you came out the womb
“what am i going to do with you omncinci?” she spoke, mainly to herself.
she was blessed with the intelligence to be able to grant the gift of the both of you, two females, to create a child with both of your combined dna. but she feels like she might waste it.
what if she isn’t a good mother? what if she doesn’t know how to help you when you need her? how to connect with the little bundle of joy once she grows and matures? will they both fight? will they even like each other?
the soft giddily screech of her daughter snapped her out of her thoughts.
she brought amani up to kiss her over her face, she couldn’t laugh just yet, but shuri could tell she was trying, it made her giggle to herself.
“are you trying to laugh? are you laughing at me encinci?” she mocked, tickling the infant in her stomach, causing her legs to squirm.
tears of joy i think filled up the room
she could remember the day that you both had announced the birth of your daughter to the nation. they called her the kingdom’s gift, and that she is. she was something, someone, you all needed.
shuri remembered the spark in your tear filled eyes as amani was brought into your arms. she hadn’t cried when she came out of your womb, she merely looked around, after just coming into the world, she was curious little thing.
you told her how perfect she was, how beautiful she looked, she had shuri’s skin complexion but had your eyes, with the longest, prettiest lashes. a mop of curls set atop her head. and she was so little, almost as if you could crush her if you held her too hard.
she truly was perfect and had to be the most gorgeous baby you both had ever laid your eyes upon, and the kingdom agreed.
you are now the reason that i fight
it had seemed like time had slowed down as shuri had first seen the baby girl. she had never cried that much since the death of her mother and her brother.
but now she was blessed with the gift of a family of her own.
“i promise you,” her voice cracked, as a single tear fell down her cheek, “i’m going to be here for you, i wont ever let you go.”
i ain’t never did nothing this right in my whole life
“i always give you a shoulder to cry on, then i’ll dry your tears, i’ll clear the skies when it rains, i’ll make sure you never feel anything but joy, i’d give you the moon and stars if you asked me, i’d move mountains for you, i’d keep away all the big bad wolves that would even dare to mess with you, i won’t ever let any harm come to you, sithandwa.”
got me thinkin’…
“i love you.”
am i worthy of this gift?

I'ma be bold! Marvel Time!
Wakanda has Vibranium. An impossible mineral that does not see like it could form naturally, right? Or there would be far more in the wider universe then just the few bits we see.
You know what ELSE is impossibly rare, minerals wise?
Ectoranium. The disasteroid. And! From Wakandan oral history? The two seem to have appeared in the EXACT SAME WAY. Out of no where. Through, very possibly, the EXACT SAME rarely opening portal. If? On the other side? There was an asteroid belt of some kind?
It would only take things aligning just right, for one to slip through.
We KNOW materials from the Zone effect the living world in strange ways. Vibranium could very well just be the dead reflection of a mineral from a different, more durable, universe. The Zone is Infinite, so it would mix pretty much EVERYTHING together into a chaotic mess.
So there could be a considerable amount of Vibranium asteroids just hanging around.
But! And more importantly! Getting hit by, then LIVING OVER, a massive fuck off Zone Rock? Would expose Wakandans to generations of Ectoplasm. ESPECIALLY with how Vibranium, by nature, holds a "charge" if you will. It would be a heat lamp of Limnality. Making everyone near it?
Better.
Not superhuman. Not fully Limnal. Because Vibranium HOLDS a charge. That Ectoplasmic energy would be stuck INSIDE the metal. Unable to truely effect anyone who isn't directly touching it. Even then, BARELY seeping into them. But? It WOULD leech, slowly, into everything around it.
The air, the water, the soil.
The PLANTS. That precious, precious, SACRED Herb.
Over time? It would loosen the ties that bind. Those pesky human limitations. Sure, it would say, grow smarter. Stronger. Live longer, better lives. Knees that ache less, backs that do not bend, bones that do not succumb. You're still human! Your DNA no different.
It's just the strength of your SOUL poking through.
Would anyone notice, if it happened slowly? Over enough generations? It's normal. Everyone here is like this. It's not superhuman. Just... HEALTHY, right? A good diet and plenty of exercise? That is what makes our skin clear and eyes sharp, teeth strong and feet sure. Right?
That healthy diet of... what was it again?
Ah yes, Ectoplasmicly charged plants? Sweet fruits and healthy vegetables. Water purged of contamination by the Ectoplasm to devours all but itself? So very crisp! Is it not?
Houses made of materials charged with it. Resting in beds, beneath covers and cloth, woven with it. Walking upon streets paved with it. What in Wakanda is NOT touched by it? In some form? Some way? Gently bathing all who live there in its unseen light?
And, tell me, WHERE do you go again? When you fall? When you join your Panther God? Mmmhmm, pockets within pockets. Lairs and territories. The Zone itself may be green, but a Lair can be what ever it's Master chooses.
But! Why do I bring this up? That the Afterlives are no doubt connected? After all, it's not like the Master's of those Lair's, the Gods that are worshipped, would just... LET people leave. It defeats the purpose of creating an "Afterlife"!
But, again! Consider! The Panther God loves the Wakandan Royal Family. They are loyal worshipers. The Panther Gods responsibility. And? The rather newly dead T'Chaka, former monarch (and thus rather informed of all the major concerns of a nation) of Wakanda, has informed the Panther God that? Gasp!
The Vibranium is, at generations long last, about to run out.
Their people are in danger.
Please! Do something!
The God can not. Buuuut... the "ghost king" of the space between, can. He must go, on a Dangerous And Heroic Soul Pilgrimage(tm) to meet with this mysterious king. Negotiate for his son and people. T'Chaka, a brave and dignified king, will of course face this challenge with all that he is.
It's very Alice in Wonderland. (The poor man.)
But the Black Panther manages to get to the still under construction castle none the less. Lead by a delightful, if mischievous, young girl by the name of "Dani" (with an i). Who reminds him, somewhat painfully, of his daughter Shuri when she was younger.
The King of the Between is a... young man.
Busy putting constellations on the ceiling, he pays them little mind. Until Dani calls out to him. Revealing that exactly like Shuri, she was a princess all along. He can see the resemblance.
He explains his issue, prepared to argue his case for however long he must. Instead he is just met with long soul searching look, a glance to Dani (who appears to vouch for him), and a nod. He is baffled. It... so easily?
People need help, he is informed. That's reason enough. Besides, Dani says you're not a fruitloop. And the young king trusts her judgment.
Let's go get your people some rocks.
(You can imagine, the ABSOLUTE SHIT STORM. Mentally, Emotionally, Politically, when the GHOST of the FORMER KING just? Shows up! Broad daylight! In the royal yard in from of the palace with a GIANT piece of Vibranium and a foreign King of The Dead.
Father... WHY. Don't get T'Challa wrong, he is about to cry he's so happy to see you. But? In PUBLIC, Father? In front of his delicious Wakandan Salad? Stop being so amused you old cat! This isn't FUNNY! Now I have to deal with this! T^T )

Thinkin more on the Xeno au and about the family. And mostly about what everyone would be. Like of course they'd start out as chestburster-esque with more flesh-colored exoskeleton that'd be really soft like skin and mostly only a long tail. And then grow into other things, but there's several castes that even basic runners and drones can grow into.
Bruce: Drone -> Warrior -> Praetorian -> Queen (Winged)
Barbara: Drone -> Warrior -> Alpha Warrior
Dick: Runner -> Carrier
Jason: Runner -> Prowler -> Crusher
Cassandra: Runner -> Prowler
Stephanie: Drone -> Warrior -> Praetorian
Tim: Drone -> Warrior -> Praetorian
Harper: Drone -> Warrior
Duke: Drone -> Warrior -> Tusked
Cullen: Runner -> Aquatic
Damian: Drone -> Warrior
Carrie: Drone -> Spitter
Terry: Runner -> Prowler
Mathew: Runner -> Prowler
Random fun facts & rabmbles:
Tusked were, well, tusked xenomorphs specifically bred by yautja to act as forced attack dogs, and the ones we know who were released and escaped were accepted by a queen as her own
Alpha warriors are canon and are slightly larger than other warriors, can command other warriors, and in some cases are more intelligent too. They're almost between warrior and praetorian in ranking.
The praetorian caste is also known as royal guards, because that's what they are in most cases. They protect the nest and eggs and queen, and if the queen dies they may replace the queen.
Canonically there was a comic where Batman fought against a giant crocodile alien (no it didn't come from Killer Croc thankfully lol) that he defeated by bleeding it out until the floor collapsed into lava
The xenomorphs have had a civil war before on their home planet for the Royal Jelly, the black xenomorphs and red xenomorphs both fighting each other for their queen to become the next Queen Mother
Did you know there's further castes beyond the queen? A queen can become a Matriarch, then an Empress, and then a Queen Mother
Tumblr media
Crushers are the equivalent of praetorians for the runner castes, and are canonically the most armored outside the queen castes themselves.
There's a theory about the spines on the xenomorphs' backs, where the longer they are the stronger the xenomorph, at least for basic castes. However there's another theory that this is an age thing. Neither is confirmed.
Did you know that xenomorphs have worked with others several different times when they're under threat, especially the queens or young.
Xenomorphs have Eidetic memory, and can even access memories from previous xenomorphs along their bloodline.
Normal xenomorphs can eventually become queens, but a xenomorph can be born as one from a Royal Facehugger, which unlike normal facehuggers have two embryo: a queen and a drone/runner to protect said queen
There have been exotic xenomorphs that are individuals such as the tusked or the winged queens, usually altered genetically or with an incredibly rare host (for example a winged queen has canonically come from a vampire in the comics before)
All xenomorphs are female, save for a single individual created using human dna and other genetic manipulation that was known as the king xenomorph.
Other genetic hybrids have been created as well, the most well known being the Newborn but there have been more balanced ones as well such as Eloise (a vat-grown android-xeno hybrid) which can have abilties of both species
Fun fact: A chestburster will not emerge in someone with leprosy, staying dormant, and other xenomorphs will not attack the people due to them carrying said chestburster.
Yautja hunting parties will hunt hybrids more enthusiastically than normal base xenomorphs for both the challenge and in some cases thinking they're abominations, such as a Predalien (in which case elders are usually the one to hunt them)
However they will also use xenomorphs as mounts, attack dogs, and other such things. For example one yautja rode a xeno-rex in ancient times as a hunting steed.
@phoenixcatch7 I summon thee mutual lol

November, 2017. Thanks to public interest in its youngest members, the Armorican royal family is riding high on a wave of unprecedented popularity. Support for the monarchy is at all-time high, but life under the microscope could push them to the limit…
Previous | Chapter Start | Beginning | to be continued…
Crown Princess Rosalind asks her father, Andre, King of the Armoricans for permission to propose to her girlfriend, Mary Yokoyama. Andre accedes to the match, and an elated Rosalind carries her joy into a meeting with her best friend/professional underling Theo Adams (who is also her younger brother's ex). From Theo, Rosalind learns that she is the subject of a new book by famed royal journalist Kristina Greene.
Meanwhile, Prince Frederick and his girlfriend Lady Emily are staying in Uspana and aiding in preparations for the Armorican's upcoming state visit. Emily is eager to become engaged, but Freddy is distracted by his frustrations with his family, particularly his younger brother, Prince Jacques.
Jacques has pulled out of the trip last-minute, but his wife, Vivienne, Duchess of Laye is still attending. He berates her for her clothing choices as she prepares with the trip, and the argument culminates in an incidence of physical violence, the first in their marriage.
Things are similarly strained between Andre and Queen Elise. Andre is planning to use the Uspanian trip to spend time with his mistress, Leonor Reyes, a princess of Uspana. Elise delivers an ultimatum: if Andre does not end his relationship with Leonor, she will file for divorce. Shaken but unable to defend his actions, Andre spends the night alone.
After arriving in Uspana, Vivi strikes up a conversation with the charming Julian Reyes, grandson of the formidable Queen Beatriz of Uspana. While Julian's uncle, Crown Prince Arnaut, scolds him for engaging in a dangerous flirtation with a married woman, Andre meets with Beatriz who suggests that he abdicate.
That night, the families convene for a formal state dinner, followed by a dance. Freddy and Emily share a tender moment on the dance floor while Vivi and Julián dance and flirt, deepening their attraction. Andre attempts to council Rosalind about the seriousness of her position and her relationship with Mary, but she grow suspicious when he begins to speak regretfully of the mistakes he has made in his relationship with her mother.
Andre and Leonor retreat to his room and have an intimate moment while Rosalind calls Mary, who is in Aducia, tracking down Freddy's ex-girlfriend Kelly Farrier and her young son, Arthur Farrier. Having illicitly secured a DNA sample for a paternity test, Mary is due to join the rest of the Armoricans in Uspana.
The next day, Freddy has a meeting with Theo. The two tour the museum exhibit he worked to create and rekindle their friendship, ending on a playful, affectionate note. Mary, meanwhile, is ambushed by the paparazzi at the airport -- someone has leaked news of her relationship with Rosalind and the sordid details of her first marriage, which ended with the mysterious disappearance of her still-missing husband. Pursued by the press, she flees to the safety of Nakawe palace, where she takes refuge with Rosalind. The two agree to an engagement but decide that they must find a "bigger story" to bury the scandalous story about Mary's past. The couple meet with Freddy and Emily, urging him to propose to divert media attention away from themselves. Freddy is reluctant, but ultimately decides to propose after a heart-to-heart with his father. Emily accepts, and the couple announce their engagement to the delight of the nation.
Mary and Rosalind attend their first public event as a confirmed couple, but most of the media focus remains on Freddy and Emily. Leonor persuades Andre not to veto the couple's relationship. After a false start, Vivi and Julián act on their attraction and have sex in her hotel suite.
The next morning is the Armoricans' final day in Uspana. Leonor and Andre part on a melancholy note, unsure when they will see one another again.
After returning to Armorica, Theo ends her relationship with line cook Rob Lewis. He goes to a bar to drown his sorrows and drunkenly agrees to an interview with Kristina Greene. Vivi returns to her marital home, and reconciles with Jacques. Andre returns home to Elise and informs her of his decision to end their marriage.
In the epilogue, Rosalind and Mary break into Kelly's apartment. DNA testing has confirmed that Arthur is Freddy's son, and the two break into her apartment to coerce her into signing an NDA and accepting a large annuity in exchange for her silence.

I cannot ignore this line no longer, dear travelers, for I have that aching feeling in my gut…
Tumblr media
I have said this before and I shall say it again, I have a terrible feeling about this line and the latest trailer for Diasomnia has me worried.
Malleus mentioning the “Spinning Wheel Curse” and how no one could break it is especially interesting- yes, he is likely tied to Maleficent herself (likely by bl00d), so I suppose it makes sense. However, with the latest information in TWST there is room for me to believe that this was no mere coincidence- as the saying goes, there is a reason for everything and everything has a reason. Yana is smart, she would not just add something like this just to poke fun.
Tumblr media
Silver is shown asleep in the trailer, as he usually is, sleeping peacefully and dreaming the day away- but, have we all forgotten that he is very much like Princess Aurora herself? His birth parents even gave him a ring in the shape of her tiara and the colour of the crystals were Aurora Coloured- definitely not a coincidence. Is it also a coincidence that he immediately felt sleepy after touching the ring? No, I don’t think it is.
Lilia even commented about the colour saying that it is just like Silver’s eyes, “the colour of the aurora”…
As I play through the game it is undeniably easy to see who he is “twisted” from or rather likely related to. If he is indeed a prince (a lost prince for that matter) and related to Aurora and Phillip no less, then the curse that never technically broke would be in his DNA right in the form of a genetically modified trait?
Can magic, strong fae magic, have genetically modified the DNA of the human royal family starting with Aurora? I mean, he certainly has the good looks… gift of beauty no doubt, mate!
Tumblr media
Anyone else notice how the string breaks the second Silver awakens and that the green glow on the spindle is no more? Perhaps the curse breaks? But the question remains as to whom will break the curse-
Simps, this is your chance to line up and take a try at breaking the curse! Step right up and kiss the boy!

Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey #2 (May 1994)
At last, we find out Doomsday's secret origin! And then kinda wish we didn't, because it's pretty gnarly. In fact, this might be the most disturbing character origin in all of DC Comics, including Vertigo and that "Dark Multiverse" thing they were doing a while back.
But, before getting to Doomsday, Superman has to deal with the mess he left in Apokolips last issue. Thanks to Doomsday's rampage, the Cyborg Superman has taken over the planet and plans to turn it into a new Warworld so he can take it around the universe, conquering other worlds. Yes, he wants to turn the worst planet in existence even worse.
The Cyborg has easily taken care of Darkseid's Parademons by transmitting a frequency that melts their brains. But where's Darkseid himself? He was last seen taking a good beating from Doomsday, and when Superman runs into him, he's... not in great shape.
Tumblr media
"DARKSEID IS. TIRED."
Superman is briefly tempted to leave Darkseid to die, but he ends up dragging him to safety and using the Mother Box he borrowed last issue to heal him, because Superman gonna Superman. Just when Superman is lamenting the fact that he doesn't have enough time to go back to Earth for help, Waverider shows up... only to instantly remind Superman that he can't help, due to his sacred vow as a protector of the timestream.
Superman, however, basically tells Waverider to nut up or shut up and use his temporal powers to give him helpful information about Doomsday. Waverider finally succumbs to Superman's bullying and shows him a vision of a "distant planet" circa 250,000 years ago. The planet seems to be uninhabited except for some spiky monsters who kill anything in their sight and a group of scientists inside a reinforced dome. The leader of the scientists is an alien called Bertron who is obsessed with creating "the ultimate form of life" by any means necessary. Including, we soon find out, baby murder.
Tumblr media
Following Bertron's orders, the scientists launch an alien baby into the hostile atmosphere and just sit by and watch while the spiky monsters tear it apart in seconds. Then, they scare the monsters away with their weapons, send someone out there to scoop up whatever's left of the baby, clone a new infant from that DNA, and repeat the whole process.
After 20 years of doing that every day, the baby has evolved to the point that it now takes minutes to be torn apart instead of seconds. Also, it's now considerably uglier.
Tumblr media
Within 30 years, some of the scientists are starting to show reservations about working at the baby murdering factory, but the progress is undeniable. By now, the baby (more like a large bald dude) is able to survive in the hostile environment indefinitely and actually fights back against the spiky monsters... who kill him every time anyway, but still. Progress!
An indeterminate number of decades pass, and the "baby" has turned into a big, hulking creature that Bertron calls "The Ultimate." The minutes of survival have stretched into full years as the Ultimate walks across the planet hunting the spiky monsters until none are left. Bertron is ecstatic that his creation has finally become an unkillable killing machine. So... what now? Well, suffer an ironic death at its hands, of course, because it turns out Doomsday remembers the thousands of deaths Bertron put him through.
Tumblr media
According to Waverider's narration, Doomsday might have wiped out all life in that planet if he hadn't stumbled upon Bertron's supply ship. He ended up bouncing through the universe like a murderous ping pong ball, until he reached a planet called Calaton, whose royal family had gained metahuman abilities through the amazing power of inbreeding (that's not a joke about royal families, that's in the comic!).
After years of being unable to stop Doomsday, Calaton's royals gave up their lives to form an energy being called the Radiant, who looks like Silver Surfer but powered by cousin porking (miraculously, he seems to have all his limbs). It took a week of fighting and an explosion that destroyed a fifth of Calaton, but the Radiant finally managed to kill Doomsday. Unfortunately, the Calatonians have a strange custom that says they can't destroy the bodies of planet-killing aliens and must instead dress them up in gimp suits...
Tumblr media
...and launch them into space, which is how Doomsday ended up crashing into Earth in that capsule he finally escaped in Man of Steel #18. This concludes Waverider's presentation.
Back in the present, Darkseid wakes up from his healing nap just in time to recognize that the Cyborg has launched some missiles at Apokolips' food pens to starve the population, because that's what he'd do too. Superman doesn't feel great about teaming up with Darkseid, but he'd feel even worse if innocents died, so he slows down the missiles while Darkseid gets rid of them with his Omega Beams. Darkseid tries to Omega Beam the Cyborg away, too, but he actually survives the blast (that's two people who CAN "withstand the unsurpassed force of the Omega Beams" in as many issues).
Although the Omega Beam hurt him, the Cyborg uses surrounding machinery to repair himself and, while at it, become a giant mecha. Superman hits him with the full force of his heat vision...
Tumblr media
...but once again, eye lasers prove ineffective against the Cyborg, since he just rebuilds himself again, even bigger this time. Darkseid, however, claims he was still recuperating from Doomsday's beating before, but he's in tip-top shape now -- and proves it by hitting Giant Mecha-Cyborg with the REAL strength of the Omega Beams, completely disintegrating him. Sorry for doubting you, eye lasers.
With the Cyborg out of the picture, Darkseid thanks Superman for his help by telling him to get off his planet and go chase Doomsday wherever he is. Deesad reveals where he teleported Doomsday to last issue: Calaton, the planet where they already beat him once, figuring they can just do it again -- but Waverider points out that it's exactly the opposite. Because of Bertron and his gang of baby killers, whenever something kills Doomsday, he evolves to surpass it... which means Superman has no chance against him, either.
Everyone present agrees that Superman is pretty much screwed, but Superman says he doesn't care... while his inner narration shows the opposite. In fact, he's terrified, but he's still going after Doomsday to stop him or re-die trying. TO BE CONCLUDED!
Beard-Watch:
It's coming back! You know a Superman story is getting intense when he hasn't had time to shave in a while.
Tumblr media
Don Sparrow points out that Superman's "tough guy stubble" seems to come out of nowhere after Waverider's flashback sequence, but I can think of two explanations for that: A) Superman was affected by some minor chronal energy that caused him to age extra fast, at least around the face, or B) that was a long-ass flashback sequence.
Plotline-Watch:
Okay, disregard what I said last time about this miniseries being hard to place in the continuity: Superman explicitly says he's "stronger" and "better" before blasting the Cyborg with his heat vision, so this is definitely happening during the "super-charged powers" storyline. The only hitch is that this is supposed to be taking place during the period when Superman was constantly breaking things and shooting off his heat vision without meaning to, and there's nothing like that here, but that's for the best because 1) that stuff got pretty annoying and 2) minis like this work better if they're not that tied to the ongoing plotlines. No one wants to see five pages of Jimmy Olsen trying to renew his driving license in the middle of a Doomsday fight.
One reason Waverider decides to get off his ass and help out is that he remembers the time he had to watch Superman get beaten to death without doing anything, so he kinda owed it to him. That happened in The Legacy of Superman #1.
Tumblr media
There are a couple of references to Armageddon 2001, the 1991 crossover that introduced Waverider: he mentions he was an "activist" before he became a golden being with a flaming head (he even vandalized a statue of Monarch, his original timeline's super-dictator) and when he shows Doomsday's origin to Superman, we see the same psychedelic effect shown in Armageddon whenever he'd touch a superhero to snoop into their future.
Tumblr media
What isn't referenced is the time Superman lived in Apokolips for a while, first as an amnesiac anti-Darkseid revolutionary and then as his mind-controlled "son" (in 1987's Legends crossover), but that's understandable since all those memories were wiped from his mind at the end of that storyline.
Did Darkseid really kill the Cyborg, as Superman seems to think? Nah. We'll find out what really happened soon enough.
Waverider's narration claims that, after Doomsday left that unnamed planet where he was created, the natives found Bertron's lab and became obsessed with genetic experimentation, "sending them down the path of a unique and disastrous future." On that note, Don Sparrow says: "I love the detail on page 27, explaining that had he stayed, Doomsday would have killed the entire planet. It’s like, who cares about some random planet?" Yeah, why are they giving us so much detail about that place?! Weird.

Art-Watch (by @donsparrow):
On one hand, the concept of each of the covers just being a step by step sequence of the two main characters streaking into battle has a certain power and simplicity. But on the other hand, there’s little to differentiate them (particularly these first two) and it can feel a bit repetitive.  Another detraction is that the computer generated background on the last issue looked like a wall of flame, but shifting the colour to green just looks like a tie-dye pattern, which doesn’t make sense for the story. Still:  Great drawings of both characters.
The first few pages are another good showcase of Jurgens’ unique very tall panel layout, and while it’s mostly exposition (helped a lot by the gradient colour background representing the timestream) there are a few interesting, if odd details about Vanishing Point.  First, what the hell is that pediment on the window of Vanishing point?  It looks a little like Legion villain Validus, but not perfectly so.  Secondly, it’s so eccentric that the time viewer Waverider looks at here is an animated piece of parchment, complete with feather quill pen.
Tumblr media
Further along the silhouetted image of an injured Darkseid is very cool.  The colouring is a real star throughout, but I particularly like the gold rim lighting on the red metal of the Cyborg’s face.
As we see Doomsday’s origins, it’s interesting to see how Bertron ages.  He looks like a malevolent E.T.!
Tumblr media
The image revealing Doomsday’s final form is a classic, even if he’s starkers.  They also can’t seem to keep his physiognomy straight—if he’s solid mass with no organs, why does he need a belly button?  The ink spatters indicating his killing blow of Bertron are a restrained way of showing something gory is happening.
Calaton looks a lot like the fake Krypton from Adventures of Superman #500, though there’s a lot of nice design that went into a fairly short section of the book.  It’s funny that a story featuring Hank Henshaw, himself an alternate take on Mister Fantastic, would birth the Radiant, who visually is virtually indistinguishable from The Silver Surfer, who also made his debut in Fantastic Four comics. [Max: Ha! They should have brought Inbred Silver Surfer back for the Superman/Fantastic Four crossover featuring the Cyborg...]
Tumblr media
Explaining the containment suit and metallic block where we first find Doomsday is a nice touch.
We talked in a previous review about how Image-comics-inspired the colouring is on this mini-series, but how badass Superman looks throughout is also vaguely reminiscent of Image titles at the time.  The cross-hatching and tough guy stubble appearing (quite suddenly—he had none before his Waverider trance!) makes Superman look pretty tough-as-nails. However later in the book as Superman flies off to confront the Cyborg, his face shows so much concentration he begins to look vaguely like Manny Pacquiao—so you know it’s gonna be a good fight!
Tumblr media
The image of the Cyborg shaking like a ragdoll upon the impact of the Omega beams is a great, electric effect.  The single panel the most similar to Image comics must be on page 43 where Superman’s eyes glow red before blasting the Cyborg’s rebuilt body away.  While the “eyes glow red because he’s mad” effect is done to death today, when this was published, it was rare enough to be pretty exciting.  Darkseid’s march, and dialogue is pretty awesome as he takes care of the threat of the Cyborg Superman.  In that way, this is an odd issue—Superman has almost no effect on the outcome.  It’s Waverider who fills Superman in on Doomsday’s origins, and it’s Darkseid who destroys the missiles, AND dispatches the Cyborg Superman.  I suppose none of that would be possible without Superman’s mercy, helping Darkseid heal, but Superman mostly stands around watching the action in this issue.  Lastly, Waverider on page 46 looks a lot like Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it’s fun to think of his thick Austrian accent trying to make its way around all the timestream techno-jargon Waverider spouts. [Max: "Get to da Vanishing Point!"]
Tumblr media
SPEEDING BULLETS:
Wait, did the Cyborg just flat out kill Desaad?  I guess not, but it was a cool line. [Max: He's alive by the end of the issue, but wasn't there a story that revealed Darkseid is constantly killing and recreating Deesad? Maybe he did that off-panel.]
Tumblr media
Do you agree with Superman’s hectoring Waverider about giving him information from his unique knowledge of the timestream?  Superman would have some trouble with the old Prime Directive if he were in Starfleet.
Kinda nuts that the female scientist waited THIRTY YEARS to voice her objection to killing an infant all day every day!  There’s a lot of unanswered questions about these scientists.  What are they paid?  Do they get time off? [Max: I always got the impression that these scientists were aliens too, but this time I noticed Bertron says "this world of yours" to them... So I guess they're meant to be [SPOILERS] Kryptonians, from a habitable part of the planet? Their clothes do match the wardrobe in the early parts of World of Krypton, especially that one lady's earrings. Knowing their race, they probably did it just for the love of science... and launching babies.]
Tumblr media
I find myself interested in “the beasts” that Doomsday combats while he’s developing.  We’ve never seen them before, or since in any stories set on… that particular planet. [Max: Same here. I like their cartoonish look, too. DC Nation should have done some Roadrunner-type shorts featuring Baby Doomsday escaping the spiky monsters and dying in some wacky new way every week!]
Tumblr media
Page 23 they kind of bury the lede, just casually mentioning that if killed, Doomsday revives, evolved past whatever killed it.  That’s a pretty insane power level.
Bertron getting murdered by his creation was actually a pretty good metaphor for Krypton’s scientific community—coldly experimenting for science’s sake, with no thought to the consequence they may face in the future.  More on that in the next issue.
What kind of food do the food pens hold?  Like grain and stuff? [Max: Didn't a Darkseid-themed cereal box show up as a variant cover recently? Yep, found it. It's probably that.]
Everyone--hero and villain--all telling Superman he will for sure lose to Doomsday has to be a knock to his confidence!

DP x DC AU.
Danny Phantom has been the King of the Infinite Realms, a halfa, and hero for thousands of years now. He, by all accounts, is considered a god or Eldrich abomination (or both), which means his power levels are par to few/none. Under his reign, his planet Earth found massive peace (religious wars were stopped simply by asking people there, pre-meditated murder went out the window when the risk of them coming back as a ghost was very real, and Fenton Technologies compounded with Ghost Zone technologies had completely changed the course of human evolution).
Danny learned how to rule and does so well. He does it so well that the afterlife basically runs itself now. Sure, disputes still happen, fights still break out, but they're small affairs compared to how things used to be. As the King of the Zone, his mere presence has healed much of the cracks and fissures that had occurred under Pariah, and, even in a place where death and life mix as well as his own DNA mixes with Ectoplasm, where one minute there's a sudden influx of the dead just as a new species is born from the mythos of old, it's quite a content place to be. With the dimension's growth, so, too, has Danny, now looking like a man in his thirties, lean and strong but comforting all the same (he can never quite die due to his halfa status, but he stopped aging normally around the time he turned thirty-three - he now can appear however old or young he feels, and, after his family passed, he reverted back to his younger man days, which he felt was when things seemed to settle around him).
But, well... Danny is bored as hell.
Now, he's been looking to stretch his legs in the land of the living again. He's been a Zone Body for nearly 2500 years now, only making trips to his own dimension when called upon for input and to sit in on galactic meetings, but, even then, he's got tons of people who can stand in for him. Danielle, appearing as a late-twenties, early-thirties woman usually going by Ellie or El these days, is considered the Princess of the Realms and leads up exploration teams on different dimensions that have either pinched off from the realms, forming fully-living or fully-dead places, and better charting the healing process and anything they need to step in personally (while considered the 'land of the dead,' the Infinite Realms is more akin to a purgatory, connecting, well, infinite dimensions where life and death exist more exclusively, acting as a bridge, a binding agent, between time and space).
Danny decides to appoint his top advisors (largely still Sam, Tucker, and Jazz, who have become ghosts and, as royal appointees, have access to all afterlifes and free pass to go and come as they please, as well as some trusted long-time allies like Clockwork and Pandora) to keep eyes on everything for him while he takes a 'short scouting mission' with Danielle (i.e. maybe take a break).
Ellie and Danny head off to the next dimension on the list, and, as soon as they hit the ground running, it's immediately clear that this one is filled with issues.
While the general rule is that they don't meddle in dimensional affairs, this dimension, right off the bat, REEKS of stale Ectoplasm. Like it's been broken off and re-attached incorrectly to the Infinite Realms, and thus the normal flow of ectoplasm has stalled. This can cause a lot of complications, especially for people who come into contact with said ectoplasm. It's also a dimension of heroes and villains, which immediately kicks Danny's protective instincts into high gear.
Ellie manages to keep them on track... until they find out about a clone who's been treated horribly by both of his 'parents' even though he's done nothing wrong.
Then... yeah. She doesn't mind staying a little longer.
So yeah, they may be meddling, but this dimension needs help! They swear!
(The Justice League doesn't know what's about to hit them when two new, absolute power houses come on scene, one instantly going out of their way to adopt Young Justice, but mostly Superboy, while the other starts spearheading global unification in the most convoluted of ways. Well, except Constantine, who takes one look at the two heroes, INSTANTLY recognizes them, and nopes the fuck out. He's heard stories of the Ghost King and Ghost Princess, and, while pillars of goodness and justice, they are also known to be absolute hellions, and he's dealt with actual hell creatures).

Removing the titles will also make them win because she will be able to call herself Princess Henry… In any case, the royal family has tied a rope around its neck and it will never end. This massacre had to be stopped much sooner.
But what if DNA shows H is not KC son. Come on we have all long suspected it. It's been kept quiet to protect Diana. We are over Diana now. We loved her then but came to understand she was human. I won't love her less if Harry is the spawn of James Hewitt! In fact it would explain a lot!

Viking historian Nancy Marie Brown’s new book, The Real Valkyrie: The Hidden History of Viking Warrior Women, explores what life might have been like for the warrior woman of Bj 581. Using more evidence from the recent tests conducted on the remains, Brown traces her journey from Norway to the British Isles to Kiev then, finally, to Birka. Brown imagines the unnamed warrior meeting other prominent Viking women, such as Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, or Queen Olga, ruler of the Rus Vikings in Kiev. She also explores the Viking sagas and contemporary sources with a new lens.
Atlas Obscura spoke with Brown about her new book, valkyries, and the assumptions that underlie the history we think we know.
How did you initially get interested in Vikings—and female Vikings in particular?
When I went to college, I actually wanted to study fantasy writing and, you know, learn to write like Tolkien. I learned very quickly that that was not appropriate for an English major in the 1970s, so I decided to study what Tolkien studied, and he was a professor at Oxford University, teaching Old English and Old Norse. So I started reading all of the Icelandic sagas that I could find in translation. And when I ran out of the English versions, I learned Old Norse so that I could read the rest of them.
One of the things I liked about [the sagas] the most was that they had really interesting women characters. There’s a queen in Norway who appears in about 11 sagas, Queen Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. She led armies. She devised war strategy. And then I was looking at the valkyries and the shieldmaids and thinking, you know, these are really interesting people that have always been considered to be mythological.
So when I learned in 2017 that one of the most famous Viking warrior burials turned out to be the burial of a woman, that just absolutely dazzled my imagination.
Is this the first confirmed grave of a female warrior that we have?
This is the one that has the best proof. There are one or two others that have since been DNA tested and proven to be female. But in each of these cases, it’s hard to say if the person in the grave, whether male or female, actually was a warrior, or if the object that we are interpreting as a weapon was used for hunting or for some other purpose.
Tumblr media
What do we know about the life of the Viking warrior woman in Bj 581?
In 2017, by testing her bones and her teeth, [scholars] could say she was between 30 and 40 years old when she died. They could also tell that she ate well all of her life. So she came from a rich family or maybe even a royal one. She was also quite tall, about 5’7”. By the minerals in her inner teeth, [scholars can determine] she may have come from southern Sweden or Norway, and also that she went west maybe as far as the British Isles before her molars finished forming. She didn’t arrive in Birka until she was 16.
We also have her weapons and a little bit of clothing that were found in the grave. And these link her to what is known as the Vikings’ East Way, which was the trade route from Sweden to the Silk Road.
We can link, through the artifacts and through the bones, that she could have traveled from as far west as Dublin to as far east as at least Kiev in the 30 to 40 years of her life.
How do we know that there were Viking warrior women?
They are mentioned many, many, many times in the literature. In most cases, they have been dismissed as mythological because, of course, we know warriors were men. But we don’t know that. That is an assumption that is based on traditional Victorian ideas that because women are mothers, they’re nurturing, they’re peacemakers, and they don’t fight.
That’s not historically true. Women have always fought. And they appear in most cultures until the 1800s, when Viking studies and archaeology pretty much started. So we sort of have this problem of bias in our earliest textbooks.
Tumblr media
There’s this assumption that the warrior men of myth must have been based on real people, but it’s not the same for the mythical warrior women. Why is that?
It’s just an assumption based on what people think women are like. Most of the material we have from the Middle Ages was written by men, and most of the material we have until the 1950s was written by men, and women are slowly making their way into the field of Viking scholarship. But many of them are still working under the assumptions that they were taught.
I noticed when I went back and reread some of the sagas in Icelandic that there wasn’t this clear distinction between the warrior women being mythological and the warrior men being human. When you actually look at the old Norse text, there’s a lot of words that have been translated as “men” that actually mean “people,” but it’s always been translated as “men” because it’s a warrior situation.
Tumblr media
Is it possible for historians to remove all of those biases?
No, I don’t think it is. I think we all are looking through our own lenses. But we have to revisit those sources every generation to see past biases. So when you have layer after layer after layer of removing biases, you may get closer to the truth.
What most surprised you in the course of researching your book?
One of the controversies right now in Viking studies is should we really be talking about men and women at all? Maybe there were all kinds of different genders. We don’t know if there were more than two genders in the Viking age. Maybe it was a spectrum.
If you look at this one group of sagas called the Sagas of Ancient Times that are often overlooked because they have all these fabulous creatures in them, like dragons and warrior women. It’s really interesting [because] these girls grow up wanting to be warriors. They’re constantly disobeying and trying to run off and join Viking bands. But when they do run off and join the Viking band, or, in another case, become the king of a town, they insist on being called by a male name and use male pronouns.
So it was very shocking to me to go back and read it in the original and say, “Wow, all this richness was lost in the translation.”

Holy crap I didn't think about the Ars Goetria feeling more royal than the Sins themselves! And Andre mentions that Stolas has legions and such? Okay, how does someone lower than the rulers of hell themselves have armies but the Sins don't? Or maybe they do? Idk the world building in this universe is shit and makes me want to scream into the void? Honestly it'd make more sense that Heaven has some control over Hell in regard they're not allowed to have armies due to a fear of another war and why no one stops the Exermations. I'm not saying it's a perfect solution but that's worldbuilding at least! At least make an effort for things to make sense, Viv!
As for the club owner thing: I don't fully mind them having ventures outside of their royal duties. Heck, Mammon was even a rock star on top of being a ruler of a ring and building a business empire. They're the rulers of hell that lived for thousands of years, they can do whatever they please. Even then tho they should at the least give up some sense of royalty at the same time? Idk I'm barely awake still lol
I have no idea why she chose to create a hierarchy of demons, incorporate racism and oppression…it’s not executed well at all. Royal demons are worshipped by all, especially imps like Moxxie and Fizz to stolas. It’s bizarre. If stolas has legions of soldiers, why does he demand that a single group of three imps to serve his every need? Why do these three serve and protect him without question, and yet stolas is the one we have to feel sympathy for? Not them? Millie was almost killed, Moxxie was almost crushed, Strikrt almost died, all for Stolas. Who merely got stabbed once and was perfectly fine in a week. It was his first time experiencing an injury….boohoo??
The sins should technically have more legions than stolas but can you imagine them commanding any authority of that nature? All they do is throw parties. Maybe you’re right and that’s why Lucifer agreed to the extermination?? But it annoys me when fans have to do the heavy lifting for world building.
I’m fine with them throwing parties if and only if, it’s a break from their usual duties. And what is Asmodeus’ duty…? Making sex toys…seems a bit disrespectful to such a respected feared powerful demonic figure in the texts. Asmodeus is a leader of the Ars Goetia apparently, and stolas fears him, there must be a reason. One of the things Asmodeus could at least be in charge of is arranging the marriages of the Goetia kings and princes. Imagine that kind of twist? It would tie up the stolas blitz and fizz Ozzie stories nicely. Those four are all deeply interconnected now.
Why have the absolute heads of the monarchy and all of the oppression be these sweet kind soft people who we have to know everything about their romantic life. Why are the rich, kinder and more revered than the wild savage poor people? This really screams to me like it’s a pro monarchy message. Striker isn’t a supremacist in this narrative, Stolas Goetia is. While Blitz is yammering on about stolas lovingly following his sinstagram and fizz is defending royalty from striker and saying he’s no better than them, SOMEHOW, but meanwhile Oz and stolas are calling blitz “that feisty imp” “This imp” and later, fizz works with Ozzie to kill a lower class demon for threatening him and being part of a lower class mafia trying to make money off of a king.
More pro monarchy agenda. Rich people forget that injustice creates crime. Especially organised crime like the mafia. It’s Not that “inferior” beings are simply more prone to crime as part of their DNA and need to shut up, play nice, and pick themselves up from the bootstraps. What’s next?? Fizz saying that money will trickle down of you be patient and work hard?
And why have the main “love” story being an imp forced into the love life and family life of a royal demon explicitly against his will? Constantly putting him and his family in danger since he was a young boy?? Even in Hazbin, the royal character is served by lower castes. It’s bizarre.
Also, by isolating the sins from sinners and from other royals, they have no choice but to mingle romantically with mortal citizens, so it doesn’t make any sense for people to be surprised. Who else can they date? Who cares??
Oh that’s without getting into the idea that Rich aristocrats having top secret interspecies BDSM between upper and lower class people is somehow activism against oppression “racism” (implied) and classism….yikes..
