Feedback Fest 2024: The Nanny recs!

It's International Fanworks Day today, and @transformativeworks is asking for fic recs! (for more information check out their post!)

The Nanny is a very small fandom, I have 1872 fics (from all sites, including RUNHP via the Internet Archive) in total, and just 407 of those are on AO3 (including crossovers in which The Nanny is not the main fandom).

But despite being a small fandom we are and have been blessed with amazing writers. I have had trouble limiting my recs to just 10. My recs cover both CC/Niles and CC/Fran as ships, most are rated E/M so check the rating if you care about those things. In no particular order:

what would you do (if they never found us out) (affectionately known as wwyd) by @groovebunker - CC/Fran - In Progress - CC and Fran cannot keep their hands off each other, starting with being locked in the wine cellar. They're together and figuring this relationship out. The writing is amazing, the characterization spot on and @groovebunker introduced and convinced me of CC/Fran as a valid ship and I am forever grateful to them.

i like you (a latke) also by @groovebunker (I recommend everything by them but want to highlight these two) - CC/Fran - Fake dating and a hanukah party at Sylvia's. So sweet. So comforting. So lovely.

Christmas Special by @7billionneedles - CC/Niles - An amazing advent project, publishing a chapter a day in December 2023. They are at least 60% responsible for getting me through that month. Also fake dating, a little mystery, a little adventure and so much fluffy loveliness. And long, I love long. It was great reading this a chapter a day, and rereading it was even better.

The Hell Of It by @7billionneedles - CC/Niles (ish) - Major Character Death - MCD is not my jam. But this one. This one. It is so beautifully heartbreaking. Making me cry ugly tears in just 1259 words. If you can handle MCD, read this one. Now.

With Luck Like That by @tayryn/Tayryns_tower (restricted) - CC/Niles - Niles accompanies CC to a weekend away to woo some backers, and instead they woo each other. All kinds of shenanigans, lots of spice, but also romance and fluff. A great comfort read.

In Vino Veritas by @seariderfalcon - CC/Niles - The summary covers it: Blame it on the alcohol. Six times Niles and C.C. let liquor loosen their inhibitions and one time they didn't need it. Many lovely kisses, eventually matching up with canon (yay, Dummy Twins).

How Will I know (If She Really Loves Me)? by @enchantedslothh - CC/Fran - In Progress - CC meets Fran in Flushing the day Fran is fired from the bridal shop. Fran goes to work for the Sheffields, and the story pretty much follows canon, but it is CC and Fran starting a relationship (and CC is a lot quicker than Maxwell). It is lovely to see canon through this lens.

Life As We Knew It by Aninsomniac1999 - CC/Niles - Lots angst, dating other people, not admitting that they belong together.

normal days on upper east side by uppereastsidegirl - CC/Niles - In Progress - Lots of scenes between CC and Niles, during canon. Great to see them in the spotlight. This fic is translated, so does have some grammar/spelling issues, but it is worth it.

So, a little over a week ago, @affectionatelyrs reached out to me needing a pinch hitter for New Traditions: A Red White & Royal Blue Advent Calendar Event, and since work was slow and I was sort of itching to write more, I was like -- screw it, I'll write a cute lil' fluffy fic!

Well. Ma Nature clearly had other plans, because from roughly 10:30 AM on Monday until about 5 PM on Friday of last week, I and several hundred thousand other people in my state had no power or internet thanks to a bomb cyclone. So instead of the little fluffy fic I had planned... it grew. And grew. And grew. And today, I posted it:

It's nearly 31k words words of partially epistolary angst, fluff, slow burn romance, and smut that take place over seventeen years. I basically wrote an entire Bildungsroman in a freaking week.

"For Christmas this year, all I would like is a best friend who doesn’t mind too much that I’m a prince. Most of my classmates poke fun because of who I am, or treat me like I’m too special to be their friend. I want a best friend who knows me as much as my family does and still likes me. I know that you can’t wrap a best friend up in a box and put it under the tree, but you’re magic so you know the best way to bring one." (Movieverse canon divergence; Prince Henry, age 8, writes to Father Christmas wishing for a best friend. A few weeks later, he finds one.)

aries: lucky jupiter does leave your sign this week amid a mercury retrograde ending again, but do not despair! along with a taurus new moon in a few days it all spells the beginning of positive financial/material changes for you.

taurus: although your sign is not known to be a fan of changes or being busy, uranus having been in your sign so long has warmed you up to the notion a bit. this is a week of changes. they are all fortunate ones, so don't be afraid.

gemini: all in all it's a good week for you. mercury retrograde comes to an end, which can be chaotic but IS the light at the end of the tunnel if it's been a tough one. jupiter pops into your 12th house, which is a big spiritual blessing, and by the end of the week, gemini season kicks off.

cancerians: you got used to pluto oppositions when it was in your sign. now it's in aquarius. mars is leaving your sign this week to oppose pluto from neighboring leo. maybe not a great time for investments, but otherwise refreshing in a way; conventionally malefic planets, this would have been exhausting from your sign. here you are an outside observer even if you are indirectly affected.

leo: some career or status development occurs, which will be very positive but might effect a long term partnership in a way that seems less than desirable. most likely this is temporary and if it is not, it is for the best. then mars into your sign brings a very enthusiastic aura to you, even if you're not sensing it yourself.

virgo: if you've have a hard time thinking clearly in recent months it all clears up starting with this week and gets a major boost with the advent of jupiter in taurus. completely new realms are auspicious to you - learn something new, travel far away, apply to go back to school, etc.

libra: there's a distinct change in focus, from committing to sharing. they're certainly related concepts and yet different, telescoping one out from the other. it's now about the depth of the connection more than the definition of it. they may not match as well as one might think at first glance, for better or for worse.

scorpio: so much is about to go down in taurus. that's your relationships/partnerships house - it's mercury direct, then the ingress of jupiter, then a new moon, and then by the weekend taurus season ends. these are mostly all going to be favorable things! but they do mean letting go of something you've outgrown.

sagittarius: your ruling planet moves into taurus this week. it's an energy you may struggle a bit to access and yet it pays to intentionally build taurean structure and pleasures into your daily routine, as little life-boosting rituals that will end up making a big jovial difference.

capricorn: any romances or creative projects that seem to have stalled recently pick up pace again as mercury goes direct and then a series of auspicious taurean activities proceed. something you thought was over or gone returns. but for real, not in the ethereal way that is so typical of a mercury retrograde.

aquarius: if you've been thinking about moving, renovating, opening your home to a friend or loved one, or any sort of 4th house project, the next year or so is fantastic for this with jupiter transiting through taurus. maybe you've already started planning for it, but this week after mercury direct and with the new moon in taurus by the weekend, it's great to set intentions around those themes at this time.

pisces: having saturn in your sign can make the world seem less magical. and yet that material, solid quality is a form of magic in its own right, and don't you forget it. plus, nothing can overpower neptune while it is home in your sign. mars trines neptune this week for a boost of energy you might need, if saturn has felt too heavy here since its ingress.

🎄Romance Advent🎄 Day 12: When the Duke Was Wicked by Lorraine Heath

One-sentence summary: After losing his wife and child, devoted husband the Duke of Lovingdon becomes a dissolute rake, only to be dragged out of his stupor by family friend Grace, who wants him to help her find a loving husband.

Why read it: I recommend this book a good bit as is, but in my opinion it's right up there with Lorraine's Greatest Hits (Waking Up with the Duke, The Earl Takes All, among the general Scoundrels of St. James) and doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's incredibly emotional, super sexy, and gives you that classic "local man won't say he's in love even though all he thinks of is her and they constantly end up doing sex acts in various semi-public locations". It also presents something you really don't see a lot of in historicals, and it really asks something of the hero on a very deep level. (Also: you can always read Surrender to the Devil to see Grace's parents fall in love, and Between the Devil and Desire to see Lovingdon as an innocent boy who I guess learned a lot of shit from his eventual stepdad, Jack Dodger.)

Prompt Advent Calendar 2023: Day 9

Santa doesn’t just have elves that make toys, they also have elves that look much more human in size and appearance and who do the more adult Christmas list checks - sometimes matchmaking, sometimes helping them get promotions, dropping off physical gifts in the mail since adults wouldn’t appreciate breaking and entering, etc. While Santa solely drops off the physical gifts for kids. Person A is an elf who specializes in the adult wishes, since they’re very good at problem solving and learning various skills quickly. But Person B is an adult who sent in a wish asking for better coworkers to work with them at their job. Person A struggles to find good applicants that are also looking for work, so ends up getting a resume in order for themself and applies and immediately gets accepted due to their many skills and glowing recommendations. Person A can’t let Person B know who they really are, but the two end up getting close naturally and bonding as the only competent employees. But Person A only has a year to stay in the job, or until Person B quits - the only problem is they’re starting to get very attached to Person B and doesn’t want to leave them after a year.

July is almost here and along with it, Christmas in July 2023!

This year's prompts are more detailed than previous years'. This event is open to every fandom, ship, and rating.

Have fun!

Advent calendar. Instead of chocolate, Person A is sent an Advent Calendar full of charming confessions, ending with "I love you" on December 24th.

It's better to give than to receive. Person A draws their crush Person B's name for Secret Santa. They're so concerned with giving Person B the perfect present that they don't realize their Secret Santa has done the same.

Binge. Single Person A spends a whole day watching Hallmark Christmas movies but instead of relaxing, they remind them that they are painfully single. What happens when Person B drops in out of the blue?

Make a wish. Person A does everything in their power to make Person B's dearest wish come true.

Naughty or nice? Being nice will get Person A in Person B's good graces, but being naughty is so much more fun.

Happy Holidays. Being forever single never bothered Person A before, but this year not having anyone to bring home for Thanksgiving rankles. Can they find true love before New Year's Eve?

Do you want to build a snowman? Person A and Person B would build snowmen together when they were kids. After they grew up, Person A moved away from their hometown for work. When they come back years later for the holidays, they're awakened one night by a snowball hitting their childhood bedroom window.

First snowfall of the season. Everyone's forgotten how to drive in the snow, including the guy who rear-ended Person A. Thankfully, Person B knows how to calm them down and will give them a lift.

Home for the holidays. Person A thought they'd be alone for the holidays but Person B (their secret crush) invites A to spend the holidays with them and their family.

Comfort and joy. It is Person A's first Christmas since a major loss and Person B does everything they can to make it a good one.

Make it sparkle. "You wrapped presents today." "How can you tell?" "The table is covered in glitter." "Ooops." "Did you wrap anything for me?"

Nobody loves you like family. Person A has been home for the holidays for all of one day but their family is already getting on their nerves. Person B offers them a chance to escape.

The most wonderful time of the year. Grinchy Person A hates Christmas. Can Christmas-loving Person B change their mind before Christmas Eve or are they a lost cause?

It's become a tradition. Perpetually single Person A and their equally single best friend Person B escape their respective families every Christmas Eve and spend time together. What happens when Person A brings someone home to meet their family?

Silent night. Person A has laryngitis at Christmas, it's up to Person B to take care of them. Thankfully, they know Person A so well that words aren't necessary.

White Elephant. Person A gets something at a White Elephant party that they neither want nor need, but they know Person B would love it.

Ghost of Christmas Past. Person A regrets breaking up with Person B years ago and is determined to win them back.

Office romance. Person A asks their SO Person B to host their office's holiday party but Person B would rather have a root canal without anesthetic.

Under the mistletoe. Person A is the last person Person B would want to kiss, so why does everyone try to get them under the mistletoe?

Peace on earth. Person A steps outside to get a breather from the boisterous gathering only to run into Person B doing the same thing.

Joy to the world. Person A goes to Person B to tell them some very good news.

Taste this. Person A is making their first big family Christmas dinner by themselves. Their SO Person B offers encouragement but is hopeless in the kitchen so they're the designated taste tester.

Blue Christmas. "Who breaks up with someone December 23rd?"

Do you hear what I hear? Person A is awakened to the sound of caroling outside their window, led by Person B.

It's a Christmas miracle. The least likely thing to happen, happens and at Christmas, no less.

A candle in the window. It's a cold December night and Person A is lost driving around an unfamiliar neighborhood. A candle in the window of a house convinces them to stop and ask for directions. The homeowner is their acquaintance Person B.

Winter Wonderland. Person A is snowed in with their crush Person B.

Many happy returns. Person A runs into Person B in line to exchange unwanted gifts.

Become one with the couch. Laid-back Person A convinces perpetual-motion machine Person B to just chill with them a couple of days after Christmas.

Milk and cookies. Single Person A leaves cookies for Santa as a joke. Someone ate them overnight and left a present under the tree. Could it be … their best friend Person B?

Out with the old, in with the new. Person A breaks up with their less-than-worthy SO on New Year's Eve. Does a kiss at midnight from Person B foretell a better year ahead?
