Hey, I could see on mobile that I had an ask but my inbox looked empty when I clicked, so I'm just seeing this now on desktop! I soooo ship it. It's nascent gay Mulder and Scully, it's snarky yet supportive, it's two really hot people who deserve so much better than they've gotten. I love them.

One of my favourite ways to get into the headspace of writing Excellence (my first war AU dorcissa fic) is putting This Is What Makes Us Girls by Lana del Rey on repeat and just imagining cute little tragic videos to go with it.

Just. Dorcas and Narcissa, and with them Emma and Emmeline and Elaheh (my OC), are Struggling trying to find places in a world where they either know they don't have one, aren't sure they want one at all, or just don't know if they can take the seat reserved for them and still live with themselves.

Dorcas is the perfect only child of a good family, who knows she'll never marry because she refuses to marry a wizard just for the sake of marrying. She doesn’t know how much longer she can live up to her parents' lovingly placed high expectations, and doesn’t yet know that her parents will love her regardless.

Narcissa has lost her whole plan for the future, and is now trying to figure out how to get back in her family's good graces, figuring out where to go from here and how to get back to being the perfect child she failed to be. Her family is falling apart, and the friends she makes don't understand why this is so important to her. She hasn’t figured out yet that she ALSO doesn't know anymore why it's so important.

And then the other girls, their dormmates, who are all so fundamentally different and Struggling in such specific ways, and everyone is feeling lost and alone in their own special ways because these aren't things they talk about with any of the others. Emmeline is slowly realising that with some of her friends, she doesn’t even know if they'd help or stand by if their families tried to take her life. Emma just wants people to forget she's halfblood at all, and if that means marrying someone who'd want others like her dead, so be it as long as she's not on the list. She hasn’t realised, yet, that she's setting herself up for danger. Elaheh just wants her life to be easy, filled with joy and love, and the closer the war gets the more terrified she is that none of what she wanted can come true. She wants marriage and her friends and refuses, as of now, to accept that any eligible husband won't accept her halfblood best friend. Her smile really is the bravest thing about her.

And lowkey the lyrics to that song don't even match, but something about the vibes just feels perfectly right. They're five girls figuring life out with a war approaching that might very well be the death of them and everything they hold close is starting to feel so fucking fragile and they can't even find ways to talk about that with each other, so how are they to make sense of it all?

There's just something about teenage girls growing up in a war while their families determine they're on different sides and they choose other ways? I love it? The angst and the strong emotions are all I need ngl.
