Close your eyes and trust me
(Max Mayfield x fem reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: One day, the party find you in the woods, fighting for your life. When you wake up, you meet a beautiful redhead that catch your attention... || request here Warnings: none a/n: Wow it took me so long I'm sorry really TvT (English isn't my first language, I'm sorry if there are mistakes or if something doesn't make sense TvT)
Living alone was hard when you didn't know much about the world. That was not a choice though, you didn't want to be alone, really.
Since you escaped the lab, you lived with an old lady that found you in the woods and brought you home with her. She treated you as if you were part of her family. She even gave you a name: Y/n.
That sounded better than Twelve, and was more normal. She also taught you how to read and write, and helped you improve your social (talking) skills.
But she passed away 3 weeks ago.
You had to call anonymously whoever you were supposed to call so she could have proper funerals, to which you were the only one to attend as she had no family left.
Since then you were on your own, trying to buy "good food", as you called it, with the money she left for you. You now lived in a little cabin close to her house.
Until that night.
You were disturbed by weird noises not far away from the cabin. You had a bad feeling about that, but you still went out to check.
The party was on the track of what they thought was a demodog. The track led them into the forest.
"Are we even sure it was a demodog?" Max asked
"No, that's why we're here. To kill it if it's one, and.. not kill it if it's not one" Dustin replied
They were walking for more than an hour when they heard fight noises. They ran in that direction, only to find a h/c girl, you, fighting the demodog.
Growing up in the lab gave you abilities similar to El's, thanks to which you managed to kill the creature without being hurt too much.
Th fight was still exhausting. You weren't used to use your powers that much, and it was visible; your nose and your ears were bleeding, and it didn't take long until you faint.
You woke up in a room that wasn't yours, still exhausted because of your fight with the demodog. You propped yourself onto your elbows, looking around, until your eyes fell on a redhead girl sitting beside you.
She was reading a magazine (or something like that). She looked up, probably alerted by your movements, and planted her gaze into yours.
She was so pretty.. stunning, actually. Her blue eyes, her freckles, her red hair... She was the prettiest human being you had ever seen.
Not that you had seen many, but you were sure she was prettier than every other girl on this planet.
You stared at each other for a little time without a word being said, until someone opened the door.
"Okay you can rest, it's my turn to watch her.. I even babysit strangers now, great.."
The boy stopped when he saw you were up.
"She's up? Why didn't you say anything??"
"I- I just- I don't know.."
Her voice was amazing.
"Where am I?" you asked
"Oh uh.. let me just-" he exited the room and came back with a brunette "She'll explain better than us"
He then gestured to the redhead to follow him out of the room, which she did after one more look in your direction.
The brunette sat beside you on the bed.
"Hi" she said
".. Do I know you?"
She had something familiar, but you couldn't figure out what.
She rolled up one of her sleeves to show you something on her wrist: a 011 tattoo. Now that you saw it, you started to remember her.
"Oh.." you said, not knowing if she was with Papa or not
"We don't want to hurt you Twelve-"
"I go by Y/n now. Are you with Papa? If you think I'm going to come back-"
"We're not with him. Quite the contrary actually. You can trust us.."
With that, she explained to you everything that happened to her and the party lately, before asking you your own story since you escaped.
The two of you talked for one more hour, until you finally asked the question.
"Who was the other girl?"
"Max? She's a friend"
" A friend..?"
"Someone you can trust"
"Like... you and I?"
She nodded with a smile.
"You have other friends?"
"Let me introduce them to you"
<><><><> ♡ <><><><>
A month or two had passed since you met Max, and your feelings toward her were confusing and confused. You didn't understand why you didn't feel the same way around her and around others, so you decided to ask Joyce, with who you lived since the party found you, as no one else had room for you.
"Can I talk to you about something..?"
"Of course!"
"It's about Max.."
"Did something happened? Did you have a fight?"
"No no! I- it's just that- I don't understand why I feel weird around her.."
"Weird?"
"Yeah.. I overthink everything I say or do, my heart beats faster, my stomach feels weird.." you explained
Her lips turned into a big smile.
"What? Why are you smiling like that?"
"Y/n, dear, you're in love with her" she told you
"In love..?"
When you really really like someone, more than a friend. Someone with whom you can picture yourself in the future, for example"
"Like... you and Hopper?"
"U-uh... let's say like El and Mike"
"And um... H-how do I know if she feels the same..?"
"Confess to her, tell her how you feel. Maybe invite her to do something, only the two of you. And tell her"
"I'm going to do that, yeah! Thank you!"
You quickly pulled her into a hug before going out to find Max, who was at the skatepark.
"Max!"
"Y/n, hey! What are you doing here? Finally ready to try a skateboard?" she joked, a bright smile on her face
You felt you heart missing a beat. Her smile was so pretty and she was so beautiful...
"I- uh- I found a great spot to um.. watch the stars.. Do you.. do you want to go there with me one day..?"
"Yeah sure! Would tonight be okay?"
"Y-yeah of course!"
"Cool" her smile got wider "Let's meet around 10 at the edge of the woods?"
"Okay, see you tonight then!"
"Can't wait to be there" she said, before going back to skating with a smile.
You stood there a little while. You were a blushing mess.
<><><><> ♡ <><><><>
You were waiting at the spot you were supposed to meet Max, all stressed out. It didn't take her long to arrive though. Her smile made your cheeks redden a bit.
After greeting her, you started to walk toward your secret spot, when she took your hand in hers. I got you all flustered. Her hand was warm. It was somewhat comforting and nice.
"Is this like... a date?" she suddenly asked
"A.. date?"
"It's- uh.. when you go out with someone you really like.. in a more-than-friends way"
"Oh.. then yeah, it's like a date!"
You smiled softly, even though you weren't sure to fully understand what it meant.
"So.. you really like me?" the redhead asked
"Well- yes"
"Cool.. because I really like you too.. since day one. I- it might be cheesy and all but- the moment I laid my eyes on you I felt something.. something good of course! What I'm trying to say is... I'm in love with you, Y/n"
You were new to that concept, but according to what Joyce told you earlier, you felt the same way.
"I- I don't totally understand feelings and all but.. but I think I am in love with you too.. I- you make me feel things I don't feel for others.."
Thanks to the pale light of the moon, you would see her blush at your words. She seemed happy to hear you say that; her smile was brighter than before, and she squeezed your hand softly.
"Can I- can I kiss you..?" then, seeing you slightly confused expression "It's something that you do with your lover, to show affection in a special way"
You nodded, as she stopped walking, turning around to face you.
"Close your eyes and trust me" she said, almost in a whisper
You did as she told you, your heart pounding in your chest in anticipation. When her lips finally met yours, it just felt so right, making butterflies grow in your stomach, fireworks in your head, and heart beating faster than ever.
When she pulled away, you could see her eyes sparkling.
"Can you do that again..?"

I’m Not Ready (I’m Right Here - Pt. 2) MAJOR VOl. 2 SPOILERS
Previous Part
Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
Max is sitting across from her girlfriend in the Creel House.
Running Up That Hill is playing so loudly into Max’s ears that (Y/n) can hear it from three feet away.
Max gazes at (Y/n) for a moment before she reaches over, grabbing her pad of paper and the accompanying marker. Hi, she writes, showing the pad to (Y/n).
(Y/n) smiles, picking up her pad. Hi! :) She turns it so Max can see.
Max smiles wider, her eyebrows scrunching cutely. I’m really glad you’re here, she writes.
(Y/n) beams, flipping a page on her pad to scribble, Me too! Max grins, rolling her eyes affectionately. Leaning back over her pad of paper, she flips the page. Arcade Date? Friday? <3
Max is quiet for a moment and when she holds up the pad, (Y/n) almost laughs at the horribly drawn picture. Two girls, one with shorter hair, and the other with long, holding hands in front of what (Y/n) can guess are arcade machines.
(Y/n) grins again, standing up and pulling Max to her feet.
Max studies her girlfriend warmly, stretching up to place a kiss on her lips. (Y/n) smiles into the kiss, letting her arms wrap gently around Max’s waist.
They pull away when they see Erica’s morse code.
(Y/n) full out her flashlight, flashing back.
“Okay,” Erica says into her walkie, “the lovebirds have copied. Max is moving into phase two: distracting Vecna.”
. . .
Max ties her red Vans, and she grabs her lantern. She walks towards the other lantern, which was pulsing with light. Max pauses, glancing at the lantern, before she swallows thickly, looking back at (Y/n) for support.
(Y/n) nods slightly and Max removes her headphones and finally pauses Running Up That Hill.
“Hey!” Max yells at the lantern. “Asshole! I’m here. No more music. No more tricks. Do you hear me? What are you waiting for, huh? Come on! Do you want me or not?”
The lantern buzzes, and then the light fades.
(Y/n) jumps when Max’s lantern buzzes loudly and the light strengthens.
(Y/n) follows closely behind Max as her girlfriend follows the pulsing light of the lantern.
The two girls creep up the stairs to the attic.
The light shines even harsher and (Y/n) winces at the brightness.
Max glances over, and she catches the worried look on (Y/n)’s face. Max sits down in front of a few wooden crates.
Suddenly, the light fades again and she glances at (Y/n).
“What are you waiting for, asshole?” Max asks softly. “Hmm? I’m right here. I’m right here! I know you can hear me. I know you can read my thoughts. Even the worst ones. Maybe mostly the worst ones.” Tears well in her eyes. The lantern buzzes steadily and Max sets it on one of the crates. She completely removes her Walkman and sets it on the floor beside her. “I thought about what you said. About how I wanted my brother to die. I thought you were just trying to upset me. To anger me. But you weren’t, were you?” she asks. “You were just telling the truth. Billy, he made my life living hell. Every chance he got. So, sometimes . . . when I would lie in bed at night, I would . . . I would pray . . . “ she sniffs heavily, “. . . I would pray that something would happen to him. Something awful. I knew that he drove too fast, so I would imagine him crashing. Dying in that stupid car. I just . . . I wanted him out of my life. Forever.” Tears slide down her cheeks. “I wanted him to disappear. The day that he died . . . I think that’s why I just stood there.” (Y/n) tightens her arms around herself, focusing her saddened gaze on Max. “Watched. Not because I was scared or . . . week. But because . . . I didn’t know if he deserved to be saved. And I’ve tried to forgive myself. I’ve tried, but . . . I can’t. I can’t. So now . . . now when I lie in bed at night . . . I pray that something will happen to me. That something terrible will happen to me. So that’s why I’m here. Because . . . I just want you to take me away. And I want you . . . to make me disappear.”
“Is that all true?” (Y/n) asks and Max looks up at her girlfriend. “You wanted Billy to die.”
“Why are you talking?” Max hisses.
(Y/n) turns to meet Max’s gaze. “You ever have thoughts like that about me?”
Max scrambles to her feet. “What?” she asks. “No, (Y/n), never.”
“Normal people don’t fantasize about killing other people, Max,” (Y/n) replies and Max visibly flinches at the look of disgust on her girlfriend’s face. “You realize that, right?”
“(Y/n), please,” Max begs.
“I thought you were getting better,” (Y/n) says. Taking a step closer to Max. “But you’re not, are you? You are sick.”
“(Y/n), you don’t mean that,” she takes a step back.
“Maybe it is good he takes you,” (Y/n)’s voice grows strangely void of emotion. “Maybe it’s for the best.” She steps even closer, backing Max towards one of the walls. “In fact . . .” (Y/n) begins breathing raggidly, “. . . I’m glad it’s gonna be you.” Her voice distorts. “You will be the be the chosen one. The fourth. The final sacrifice. It’s going to be you that breaks the world.” (Y/n)’s eyes glow cloudy, and void of life.
. . .
“Max?” Eleven watches as (Y/n) takes a knee beside Max, waving her hand in front of her lover’s face. “Can you hear me?”
“He has her,” Eleven tells Will, Jonathan, Argyle, and Mike.
. . .
“Max,” (Y/n) says, taking a few more steps forward. Max glances behind her. “Where are you going? Don’t be scared.”
“Stay away from me,” Max snaps, though more tears slide down her cheeks.
“Max, I thought you said you were ready,” (Y/n) takes two more steps forward, and Max presses her back into the wall. “Ready to disappear!” she yells.
Max grabs a bat and slams it against (Y/n)’s head.
(Y/n) grunts in pain, watching out of the corner of her eye as Max darts away.
When Max turns, she no longer sees (Y/n), but Vecna.
. . .
Eleven crouches down beside Max. “Max, it’s okay,” she says, placing a hand on her best friend’s shoulder. “It’s okay. I’m coming.” Max in the mind space shakes, trembling with terror. “I’m coming. Just hold on a little longer.” Max’s chest heaves.
. . .
Max runs through her prison of the Creel house, but every door she opens is barricaded with wood.
At the last door, she closes her eyes, the song Every Breath You Take begins playing in Max’s mind.
When Max opens her eyes, she’s in a different place. She looks around at the gym decorated for the Sno Ball.
Max sighs with relief. “Holy shit,” she murmurs; she chuckles slightly.
. . .
“Every move you make. Every bond you break. Every step you take. I’ll be watching you,” Max sways slightly to the song in her chair, but she jumps when the balloons explode, blood spilling out of them.
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing, Max,” Vecna says in Max’s head before he appears, about twenty feet away.
. . .
“You think I don’t see everything?” Vecna asks and Max closes her eyes. “You thought you could trick me? You thought your friends could stop me? I see them. I see your friends. Just as clearly as I . . . see you. I can feel them. I can feel them dying.”
Max’s eyes fly open as the clock chimes, though she can’t tell if it’s in her head, or real.
“It’s time, Max,” Vecna says.
Max panics, turning around and looking for Vecna.
Then she backs up.
“It’s time,” Vecna throw up his hand, pinning the girl to the wall about fifty feet away.
Max screams out in pain; she whimpers as Vecna walks towards her, his footsteps squlching, as if his feet were wet. She struggles against Vecna’s hold.
“You are brave, Maxine,” Vecna admits, looking into the girl’s terrified face. “Much braver than your brother. But in the end . . . you are weak and fragile . . . just like him. Like all the rest of them. And you will break.” He raises his clawed hand over Max’s face and she struggles even more.
All of a sudden, Vecna flies away from Max and remains suspended in the air.
Max drops to the floor, and she pants, rising to her feet.
When her friend walks through the door, Max’s mind goes to when they had first met - during her experience with the demodogs and when she’d walked through the Byers front door.
The figure’s hand is raised, keeping Vecna in the air. Flicking her wrist, Vecna turns, and he growls when he sees Eleven Hopper.
“You,” the demon hisses.
“Hi,” Eleven replies, and, with another flick of the wrist, she sends Vecna straight into the wood bleachers and he hits the grass outside, rolling slightly.
Eleven runs over to Max, helping her friend to her feet. “Max, are you okay?” El shakes her shoulder gently.
“Huh?” Max asks, looking bewildered.
“Are you okay?” Eleven repeats.
“Yeah,” Max’s voice quavers. “Are you . . . “ she taps the side of Eleven’s head, “ . . . real? Di . . . Did I make you?”
Eleven’s lips twitch amusedly. “I am real.”
“How?”
“I piggybacked from a pizza dough freezer,” Eleven explains camly and Max stares at her, looking utterly dumbfounded and her mouth drops open a fraction.
. . .
Blood streams from (Y/n)’s shoulder, and she clutches at the bullet wound.
Jason lies, passed out, on the floor, and (Y/n) almost feels bad for smashing the vase against his head, but then her broken nose burns with pain.
(Y/n) removes her leather belt, and slides it between her teeth. She reaches up, using the balls of her hands to reset her nose.
(Y/n) bites down harshly on the belt, a strangled cry leaving her throat.
Any thought of (Y/n)’s pain leaves her when Max rises into the air.
One arm snaps and (Y/n) flinches as the sound echoes through the room. Then another arm snaps; then both legs. (Y/n) moves over, placing herself under Max; Max falls to the ground a moment later, her eyes cloudy and unseeing, straight into (Y/n)’s lap. Blood streams from Max’s eyes and she gulps for air, struggling to breathe.
. . .
“I didn’t run away this time, right?” Eddie asks through clenched teeth.
Tears stream down Dustin’s face, “No, no, no, no. You didn’t run.”
“You’re gonna have to look after those little sheep for me, okay?” Eddie asks. “Especially those two lovebirds.”
Dustin chokes on his tears. “No, you’re gonna do it yourself.”
“Naw, man,” Eddie breathes. “Say, ‘I’m gonna look after them.’ Say it.”
Dustin sobs. “I’m . . . I’m gonna look after . . . them,” he echoes tearfully.
“Good,” Eddie breathes. “‘Cause I’m actually gonna graduate,” he chuckles weakly. “I think it’s my year, Henderson,” Eddie tells his young friend. He struggles to continue. “I think it’s finally my year. I love you, man.”
Dustin’s tears fall down onto Eddie’s face; his voice trembles, “I love you too.”
Eddie’s body stills.
“Eddie . . .” Dustin cries. “Eddie? Eddie? Eddie! Come on.” He shakes his companion’s body. “Eddie!” the boy wails.
. . .
Erica and Lucas dart up the stairs to the attic.
“(Y/n)!” Lucas calls.
“Need . . . doctor,” (Y/n) yells, Lucas crouching down beside her and Max. “Call an ambulance!”
Erica takes in the state of the two girls and nods, scrambling back down the stairs.
“(Y/n) . . .” Max murmurs.
“Yes, yes I’m here. I’m here,” (Y/n) replies, tears streaming down her face, mixing with the dried blood on her face.
“I . . . I can’t feel or . . .” Max gasps, “. . . see anything.”
(Y/n) cradles her lover’s body to her. “I know. I know. It’s okay. I’m gonna get you help, okay? Just . . . please hold on for me.”
“(Y/n), I’m scared. I’m so scared. I’m so scared,” the redhead stutters.
“I know. I know. I know,” (Y/n) replies tearfully.
“I don’t wanna die,” Max sobs. “I’m not ready.”
“You’re not gonna die,” (Y/n) replies forcefully, swallowing back her own sob. “Hang on. Please, Maxie. Hang on.”
“I don’t wanna go! I’m not ready!”
. . .
Eleven is crouched beside the three, (Y/n) sobbing over Max’s body and Lucas falling to his butt, looking so terrified that he can’t think of what to do to help.
“Just hang on!” (Y/n) orders Max, tapping her cheek gently. “Max. Max! Max!” (Y/n) lets out a scream, shaking her girlfriend’s body. “No, no, no, Max. Stay with me.”
Eleven sobs, grief and horror washing over her. “No!” she wails.
“Stay with me! Don’t go, Max!” (Y/n) shakes Max again. “Max, just look at me. I’m right here.”
. . .
Blood is streaming from (Y/n)’s nose and split eyebrow. “Help!” she looks uselessly over at Lucas.
Max’s eyes begin to close, tears welling in the formerly blue eyes - eyes that once been so full of life.
“Max?” (Y/n) asks, noticing the stilling of her lover’s body. “Max? Max? Max? Max, please, stay with me. Max, s-ay with me,” (Y/n)’s words were slurring now due to her distress and exhaustion and worry. Max’s eyes finally close and a choked, “No!” leaves (Y/n)’s throat.
. . .
“Max?” (Y/n) rocks Max’s body, sobs wracking her own.
“Max!” Eleven screams. She shakes her friend’s arm.
. . .
The floor cracks open, spilling the Upside Down into the world.
(Y/n) and Lucas grab Max’s shoulder and pull her out of the way.
Jason screams in agony as his body is split open.
(Y/n)’s body shakes with sobs, but her throat is so raw that no sound comes out.
(Y/n)’s forehead rests against Max’s and her tears drip down onto Max’s face.
. . .
“It’s been less than forty-eight hours since a seven point four magnitude earthquake rocked the quaint town of Hawkins, eighty miles outside of Indianapolis, in an event that seismologists are calling ‘a natural disaster of near-unprecedented scale.’ The death toll now stands at twenty-two. But with hundreds more filling Roane County hospitals and many more people still missing, officials expect those numbers to rise.”
“Hey, Nance!” Mrs. Wheeler walks out of her house carrying a box of old toys. “I found some more of your old self in the attic.”
“Mr. Rabbit,” Nancy gasps.
“It’s okay if you want to save him, you know,” Mrs. Wheeler says.
“No, Nancy replies, placing the stuffed rabbit back into the box ,”he’ll be more loved in a new home.” Nancy turns, to place the box in the back of her car.
“Someone order a pizza?” Mrs. Wheeler asks.
“Pizza?” Nancy asks.
The sliding doors of the pizza van open and five people step out.
Nancy moves around her car so stand beside Robin.
Robin glances down at Nancy and takes the girl’s hand in hers.
“Where’s (Y/n)?” Will asks Dustin after he and Eleven hug their friend.
“She’s at the hospital,” Dustin replies, his eyes gleaming with grief.
“Is she hurt?” Eleven asks.
“Well,” Dustin pauses. “Sort of, she’s . . . Oh, God,” he rests his hands on his hips. “You don’t know.
. . .
“‘He opened his eyes, and further words died in his throat’,” (Y/n) reads from the book. “‘He forgot about the need to sick up that horrible parody of wine. He forgot about his mother, and Uncle Morgan, and his father, and almost everything else. Speedy was gone. The graceful arcs of the roller coaster against the sky were gone. He could feel the hair stirring on the nape of his neck, could feel a goofed-up grin pulling at the corners of his mouth. Speedy! I’m here, my God! I’m here in the territories.’”
(Y/n) looks up from the book and casts her gaze over Max. The book falls closed and (Y/n) sets it on the floor.
The door of the room opens and Jonathan, Will, Mike, Nancy, and Eleven enter the room.
(Y/n) gets to her feet, and walks over wrapping Will in a one arm hug.
“You okay?” Will gestures at (Y/n)’s other arm, which was in a sling.
“Lucas’s basketball captain shot me in the shoulder,” is (Y/n)’s reply as she moves over to hug Mike.
Then, (Y/n) catches sight of Eleven standing behind the two boys; she steps forward, embracing Eleven.
“I’m sorry,” Eleven murmurs,
The sound of a heart monitor distracts Eleven, and she pulls away.
Will, Mike, Eleven, and (Y/n) turn to face the girl on the bed.
“Do they know . . .” Eleven pauses “ . . . when she will wake?”
(Y/n) wipes her eyes. “Um,” (Y/n) falters, moving back around the bed to sit in her chair at Max’s side, “no. Her heart stopped. For over a minute. She died. I . . . I mean, clinically, but . . . then she came back. The doctors don’t know how,” (Y/n) glances up at Eleven.
(Y/n) scoots the chair closer to Max’s bed. (Y/n)’s fingers brush Max’s and Max’s fingers flex slightly. (Y/n)’s gaze flies up to Max’s face. The redhead’s eyelashes flutter and her eyes open.
“Max,” (Y/n) murmurs.
The others leave the room to give the two young teens a moment.
Max’s eyes had unclouded and she flicks her gaze over to meet (Y/n)’s worried (E/c) eyes.
“Still on for that date on Friday?” Max croaks.
(Y/n) chuckles weakly, “I am if you are.”
Max’s lips twitch slightly. Her fingers flex again.
(Y/n) immediately understands and reaches over, stroking Max’s knuckles below her cast.

Die First
Max Mayfield x fem!Munson!reader
Warnings: cursing, st4vol2 spoilers (but also incorrect quoting so--), blood, vomiting, unbelievable amounts of angst (‘cause I like it for some reason), making out, happyish ending, reader has asthma
WC: 4.2k
Someone dies or someone gets hurt, but if one of us dies I hope I die first, ‘cause I don’t wanna live without you I don’t wanna ever learn how to fall asleep without you Tell me what’s worse: losing you now or later Maybe I can break the curse and I can be in love forever If I die first
Max was cursed. You knew that. But if anyone was gonna die, you’d want it to be you. Max had already been through so much and she didn’t need to be scared that she was gonna end up like Chrissy or Fred or Patrick. It wasn’t fair to her. If she rose in the air and her fragile bones broke--
“Hey, Y/n.” Max’s voice cut through the dim ringing in your ears and you snapped your eyes open to look at her. “You okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. A-are you?”
“I’m okay as someone hurtling towards a gruesome death can be.” Max shrugged. “You look like you’re gonna be sick, Y/n.”
“I’m okay, really.” You patted the seat next to you and Max sat by you. You started to reach a hand out to hold hers, but Lucas took the seat next to her, forcing you to retract your hand.
Max’s face broke into a smile as she looked over at Lucas, who smiled back.
“Max, are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Max smiled bigger as she looked at Lucas, making you feel like you were intruding. You silently got up and moved seats to sit by Robin, watching their exchange.
Robin looked between you and Max, then back again. She rested a gentle hand on your shoulder, “I know how it feels, Y/n.”
You startled, “I don’t know what you’re talking about?” You hadn’t meant it to come out as a question, but it was too late.
“The way you’re looking at Max, the forlorn expression on your face, how I know you wish you were Lucas right now… you like your best friend.”
“Wh-what? I do not!” You spluttered, red-faced.
Robin gave you a look. “I’ve made that face before. I’ve felt the same way.”
“Don’t diagnose my feelings, Robin. You don’t know what you’re talking about,” You pushed her hand off your shoulder. “I don’t like Max like that. I would know if I did.”
Robin looked down, hurt. “I’m not trying to tell you that you like her, Y/n.”
“Yeah? Well, stop. Stop whatever you’re doing. I’m not about to end up in Pennhurst because of your bullshit explanation.”
“Why would you end up in Pennhurst?”
“Because you’re freaking crazy, Robin. You can’t just yell out in an RV that I like Max. Someone will think I’m psychotic and they’ll send me away.”
Robin scoffed. “It’s an easy secret to keep, Y/n.” She folded her arms across her chest. “And there’s always a chance that this won’t work, so you’d better tell her.”
“Wait, you- you think this won’t work? You think that we won’t be able to save Max and Hawkins?”
“No, no, I didn’t say that.”
“Yes, you did! You think Max is gonna die, that we’re gonna lose, that Vecna’s gonna take over the world--” You began hyperventilating. Max looked up, hearing your loud breathing.
“Y/n!” Max moved quickly, grabbing your inhaler and placing it between your lips. “On three, okay? One, two, three.” She pressed the trigger on three and you inhaled the medicine. “Are you okay?”
You looked up at her, the sunlight haloing her head and glowing gorgeously across her face.
“Y/n?”
“Oh, yeah. Thanks, Max.” You avoided her eyes, choosing instead to look at Robin, who gave you a knowing look.
Max slid into the seat across from you. “Are you sure?”
“Yes. Thank you,” You continued avoiding her gaze, focusing on Lucas behind her. “You should get back to Lucas.”
Max frowned, “Uh, okay.” She slid out of the bench seat and went back to Lucas.
Robin opened her mouth to speak, but you cut her off. “Shut up.”
She grinned. “I wasn’t going to say anything. But you should tell her, Y/n.”
“No, I can’t. When we kill Vecna, she’ll avoid me. She’ll hate me, and if you couldn’t tell, Lucas is trying to get up the courage to ask her out again. Trust me, I know what I’m doing.”
“You’re suppressing your feelings--”
“Robin!” Steve called from the front. “Stop harassing a kid and get your shit together. Max, Lucas, Y/n, Erica, this is your stop.”
The four of you gathered the lanterns and pads of paper and moved toward the door. Steve caught your arm as you went out the door. “Good luck.”
You furrowed your eyebrows and shook your wrist out of his grip, turning to receive Eddie’s worried look.
“We’ll be fine.”
“Yeah, I know. Just be careful, okay?”
Your brother’s worry scared you, and you nodded. “Okay.”
You stomped down the steps of the Winnebago and Lucas shut the door behind you. Max pulled her headphones over her ears again and clicked play on the tape. You gave her a worried glance, which she ignored. Erica went up the steps of the Creel House as Steve pulled away from the curb. Twisting the knob, you pushed the door open and clicked your lantern on.
Oh my God, I’m so scared.
Max was looking around the attic when she was intercepted by Erica, who already had you and Lucas in tow. Erica held up the pad of paper. “I found him.” Max read off the sheet, then nodded and followed the three of you to the living room, where Erica’s lantern glowed bright and subdued shades of blue.
Erica deposited the three of you in the living room and then crossed the street to call Steve, Robin, and Nancy.
The awkwardness and tension in the air were almost palpable. Lucas shot Max a smile, who then scribbled something down on her pad of paper.
“Hi,”
“Hi,” Lucas returned, shielding his paper from you.
“I’m glad you’re here.”
“Me, too.” Lucas wrote, adding a smiley face. And, after a moment’s hesitation: “Movies on Friday?”
Max grinned and began to write something, hiding her pad when Lucas leaned over to look. When she showed him, you saw that she had drawn two stick figures holding hands, and immediately felt sick to your stomach. The three lanterns on the table suddenly went dim. Shit. Max stood, retrieving her shoes and tying the laces. You and Lucas got your lanterns and followed Max up the stairs in socked feet.
Max stood in the center of the attic, lantern shining brightly on a crate in front of her. “Come and get me, asshole. I’m right here. No music this time.” Max set her cassette player on the crate beside the lantern to prove her point. Then she sat on the floor and began to speak. She spoke of Billy, of how she was glad she wasn’t dead but at the same time wished she was, how she was happy that Billy was dead. That’s when her eyes rolled back in her head and Lucas dove to her side. You ran to the window and were flashing your flashlight toward the playground when you heard a loud thudding behind you-- someone was coming up the stairs.
Jason’s blond hair became visible first, then his bloodshot and tired eyes, green letterman jacket, and finally, the shiny, silvery steel of a revolver. You felt bile rising in your throat and swallowed hard.
“Sinclair,” Jason said, diverting Lucas’ attention from Max. “What are you doing? Wake her up.”
“Jason, I can’t.” Lucas stood, shocked, and moved away from Max.
“Why not? Is this another devil, cult thing? I said to wake her up!” Jason raised the gun and trained it on Lucas, loading the chamber with a click of his thumb.
“No, Jason, don’t!” You stepped out of the shadows. “You don’t understand, this has to happen.”
“Another Munson. I should’ve known.” Jason sneered, then turned his gun on you. “Why does it have to happen, freak? So you can open a gate for Satan?”
“We’re not devil spawn, Jason,” You scoffed, then realized how poor a decision it was to antagonize a person with a gun, let alone someone who seemed willing to use it on you. “Just… we can’t wake her up, but we’re not killing her.”
Jason let out a brutal laugh, then got down beside Max, making sure to keep his gun pointed at you. “Hey, wake up.” Jason shook Max’s shoulder lightly, attempting to wake her up from the trance. “Wake up!” You could tell that if he couldn’t wake her up, Jason would do anything in his power to force you to bring her out of it, including threatening you at gunpoint or possibly shooting you.
Jason stood and pointed his gun at Lucas again. “Wake her up, Sinclair.”
“We already told you, we can’t!” You shouted, trying to pull Jason’s focus away from Lucas. “Please, Jason, you have to trust us.”
“I can’t trust you if your cult killed Chrissy and Patrick. Especially if you’re planning to kill this girl.”
“We’re not,” Your voice broke and you could feel tears wanting to well up in your eyes, but you forced them away. “I would die for Max, I-I never want to lose her. Honestly, I hope I die first because I don’t wanna live without her.”
“Then wake. Her. Up.” Jason menacingly shook the gun at you and then Lucas let out a primal cry and tackled Jason. Their bodies collided with the crates, spilling the contents to the floor. The gun fell out of his hand and skittered across the floor, the shine lost in the darkness of the attic. Lucas punched Jason in the side and Jason returned a punch to Lucas’ face.
“Shit, shit, shit!”
The walkie crackled with static and you heard the front door slam, feet pounding up the stairs.
The doorknob rattled and Erica yelled, “Let me in!”
You attempted to get around the boys, but Jason’s arm rocketed out and tripped you. You fell and broke your chin and, to your horror, the cassette player on the splintering wood.
“Son of a bitch!” Bile again rose in your throat, forcing its way out of your mouth. You held back a cry of anguish. Blood and vomit leaked down your chin and stained the collar of your shirt. With a loud crack of glass breaking, the room went quiet. You spun, expecting Jason, but Lucas was keeled over, hands on his knees, panting heavily. He looked from Jason to you, to the broken player on the ground, then to Max, whose legs were uncrossing themselves as she rose into the air.
“No!” Lucas yelled, standing under her and reaching for her feet. Too late, Max’s eyes went almost white. She convulsed and then her limbs went taught, the bones in her arms and legs pressing against her skin harshly before snapping loudly.
You let out a dry sob and Max fell into Lucas’ arms, who was sobbing freely. You knelt by them and brushed Max’s hair out of her face, tears springing to your eyes. “Shit, Max, no!”
“L-Lucas? Y/n? I-I can’t see, I’m scared… I’m not ready to die, I don’t want to die!” Max’s eyes were white, thick drops of blood dripping down her cheeks.
“You won’t, Max, okay? You’re gonna be fine, I promise, I swear on God that you’re gonna be just fine,” You reassured, despite the sobs building up in the back of your throat. A sense of helplessness was beginning to overtake your body, starting in the pit of your stomach and rising to your head, echoing in your skull.
“Stay with me, Max, stay with me!” Lucas cupped Max’s cheek as he sobbed, brushing his tears off her pale face.
Max’s breathing began to slow to a painful pace and she heaved once, blood splattering her lips and chin, then stopped altogether. You and Lucas watched in agony as her eyes fell closed, hiding the white irises from you.
The ground split open, dark red light spilling from the fissure, and you helped Lucas pull Max away before following the fissure’s progress. It ripped through the attic floor towards Jason, who lay partially conscious near the bay window. He let out a pained moan as it tore through him, killing him almost instantly and disintegrating him, forcing you to turn away from Max and throw up on the floor. Your breathing increased in pace as you watched Lucas attempt to wake Max, as the dreadful realization settled on you- Max was dead. They hadn’t stopped Vecna. Robin had been right, and you still hadn’t told Max your true feelings for her. The door finally opened and Erica stopped cold at the sight of Max.
“Erica, call 911!” You yelped, nearly choking on the lack of air. “Hurry!”
Erica turned and rushed down the stairs, footsteps thudding loudly against the horrible backdrop of silence, save for your ragged breathing.
“Erica, help!” Lucas called in an earth-shattering voice, which caused you to sob against your better judgment, which knew you were having an asthma attack- but you’d left your inhaler on the RV, which was parked at your trailer. You gasped and clutched your throat, trying to avoid looking at Max or Lucas.
“Sh-shit,” You coughed, and then you could hear the sirens. Erica had called emergency services and they were close. Max let out a small gasp for air and you swiveled to her, still gasping. Lucas startled at the outburst and gently grabbed her wrist, checking for a pulse. You locked eyes with him and he gave a slight nod. However faint Max’s heartbeat was, it was there. Max was alive. It was impossible, unthinkable, you knew you had to be dreaming, but you thanked God nonetheless for the development and smiled softly, still hacking out breaths.
The EMTs rushed up the stairs, closely followed by Erica, and immediately transferred Max to a stretcher. They carried Max to the ambulance and attended to you and Lucas quickly. They put antiseptic on Lucas’ face and gave you a quick dose of albuterol before flipping the sirens and lights on then driving off, leaving you, Lucas, and Erica on the sidewalk in front of the Creel House.
Lucas held his sister close, the pair of them shell-shocked. You went back upstairs, ignoring the red rip in the floors and ceilings. Retrieving the walkie, you called Steve.
“Steve?” You choked out, noticing the dark stain of blood on the ground. “Robin, Nancy? We kind of have an emergency here.”
The walkie screeched once and then Steve’s voice came through. “I know. We’re going back through the gate now. Be there soon.” Then, nothing. Radio silence from the older teens. You went back downstairs after collecting the pieces of Max’s player.
You sat on the curb next to Lucas and Erica, “They’re on the way. I don’t know anything else.” You whispered. “I have a feeling that something really bad happened.” You coughed, hiding a sob. “And, Lucas, Max is gonna be fine, okay? She’s alive, and that’s better than--” You stopped short as car lights turned on across the street and someone wearing a Hawkins High letterman jacket got out of the car.
Hands deep in his pockets, Andy crossed the street and stood in front of you three.
“Where’s Jason?” His voice was deep as if he was keeping himself from crying.
You looked up at him, suddenly sympathetic, understanding of Jason’s motives. “He didn’t make it. I-I’m sorry.”
Andy’s eyes shot from his shoes to your eyes. “You’re lying. What did you do to him?!”
“I didn’t do anything,” You replied, somewhat calmly. “I’m sorry, Andy. Go home.”
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to punch you. Then he turned around, went back to Jason’s car, and got in the passenger side. You looked away as he started to cry, partially out of embarrassment and partially out of sympathy. Headlights glowed down the road and you turned to see the Winnebago turning the corner. You forced yourself to your feet, then pulled Lucas and Erica to their feet.
Steve parked the RV on the side of the road and killed the engine, to your surprise. The door swung open and you waited until everyone was out of the RV, but you only counted four pairs of feet, not five like you expected. Swinging your head up, you noticed who was missing. Where the hell was Eddie?
Steve’s eyes connected with yours, brimming with tears and sympathy. “Y/n…” He held out his arms and you rushed towards him.
“Where’s Eddie?” You held back tears, just as everyone else did. “Steve. Where’s my brother?”
“Where’s Max?” You heard Nancy ask Lucas.
“Sh-she’s at the hospital,”
“You might need this.” Steve opened his hand to you and you took your inhaler from his hand. “Y/n, I’m so sorry.”
“No, Steve,” A sob pushed its way out of your throat. “Don’t lie to me, it’s not a joke. Where’s Eddie?”
Steve shook his head and a tear traced its way down his cheek.
“No--no, you’re lying! You’re lying!” Air whistled through your lungs and you pulled the trigger on the inhaler, the medicine uselessly escaping into the air.
Steve lunged for the inhaler and snatched the inhaler out of your grip, despite your protest, and forced it between your lips. He pressed the trigger, forcing you to breathe properly, and hugged you tightly.
You pushed uselessly at his chest, “No, get off. You lied to me, I hate you, I hate you.” Tears streamed in an unbroken river down your cheeks, staining your’s and Steve’s shirts.
You could feel Steve’s tears wetting your hair. “I’m sorry, Y/n, I’m so sorry.” He comfortingly rubbed your back and you clutched at his jacket, clenching it tightly in your fist. When you finally pulled away, your fingers were stiff and you were sure that your face was tear-stained and red.
“Did you at least bring him back?” You watched for any sign that they had, an imperceptible nod of some sort, but Steve shook his head, forlorn. “You left him in the Upside Down?!” You shoved Steve backward. “You left him in that nightmare? What the hell’s wrong with you?!” You punched Steve’s chest multiple times until he grabbed your wrists and pulled you close again. “You bastard! You’re useless, I can’t trust you to do anything! Eddie trusted you to kill Vecna and you couldn’t even do that, he died and you failed!” The venom in your words stung, you knew, but you couldn’t stop, despite the guilt. “You failed and Max died, you goddamn bastard!” Your voice rose, words contorting into knife-sharp shapes as you continued to yell obscenities at the poor boy. “Asshole!”
A rough hand covered your mouth, forcing you to stop yelling. “Jesus Christ, Y/n. I know, you’re mad. I’d be upset, too. But that doesn’t give you license to swear at me on the sidewalk. Eddie was my friend. I’m just as mad as you are.”
“I-I’m not mad! I’m hurt and it’s not fair that you left Eddie there, in the Upside Down, all by himself.”
“What was I supposed to do? Leave Dustin there with his body?!”
“No! But you can’t leave by himself, he hates being alone, Steve. It’s not fair.” You took a deep breath and stopped crying. In a softer voice, you said, “You could have brought him back, at least.”
Six months later
Max’s breathing was steady, and her heart rate was stable. As far as you knew, she was going to wake up within the next year or so. Some coma patients could hear when they were unconscious, but the doctors didn’t know if Max could, so they assumed she couldn’t. That’s what they had told you, that she couldn’t hear. The whole town thought that Eddie had hurt her, had nearly killed her, but they knew that Eddie was dead. They assumed because of the “earthquake.” Lucas had stopped visiting Max after the first month and you had taken his place. You didn’t read to her or tell her about your day, you just sat by her side and wished you could hold her hand. The cast was no longer around her arm, but if anyone saw you…
Oh, screw it. You picked up Max’s hand. Her skin was warm and the weight of her hand in yours felt nice, but you didn’t know what Max would say if she were awake and you took her hand in yours. Then, the slightest bit of pressure on your hand. It wasn’t just the warmth and weight of Max’s hand, you realized. Max exhaled sharply and your eyes travelled up to hers. Her blue eyes glistened, and God, was she pretty, even under the harsh hospital lights.
“Y/n?” Max’s voice cracked, almost like a walkie-talkie. It was the first time she’d said anything in six months, so the words must’ve hurt to say, must’ve scratched her throat on the way out.
“Yeah, Max, it’s me,” You made to take your hand from hers’ covertly, but Max threaded your fingers together and squeezed your hand. “How you feeling?” You turned your head away from hers’ in an attempt to hide your blush.
“I’ve been… better,” Max smiled. “Y/n, l-look at me.”
You obeyed, turning your head to face her again. Her red hair seemed firey, her eyes alight. “I swear to God, you’re a goddess.”
Max’s mouth dropped open. “What?”
“Shit.” You dropped your eyes to the bed, “I’m sorry.”
“If you meant it, I’ll take it as a compliment.”
You blushed. “No, I mean, yeah, I did mean it, but I meant I’m sorry that we didn’t… save you. We tried, really, but I crushed your tape player. I’m so sorry, Max, I know it was probably awful.”
Max scooted over and patted the bed beside her. “It’s okay.”
You shifted into the bed beside her, trying not to sit on the IV or the medicine drip that was tucked into her arm. “Doesn’t make me any less sorry.”
Max squeezed your hand again. “What does this mean?” She raised your interlocked hands.
“I think you think it means something different than me,” You mumbled, looking down.
“I know what you think it means,” Max tucked a hand under your chin and turned your head to her again. “And I like you, too.”
You reddened. “I-I don’t know what you’re talking about--” And then her lips were on yours. Shocked, you pulled away. “But what about Lucas? You and him--”
Max put a finger against your lips. “Being in a coma gave me lots of time to reflect, Y/n.” Max grinned, “And I know now that I had wanted to go on that date with you.”
“With me?” This was unbelievable. The Max Mayfield wanted to go out with Y/n “The Freak” Munson?
“Only if you want to,” Max suddenly seemed smaller, more fragile, and she looked away. “Sorry.” Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“No, no, Max, I do want to go out with you, I was just surprised. I didn’t think you liked me like that.”
“I didn’t know until I heard Robin talking in the RV. The day that I… died.” You winced, but she continued, “And I was so confused. I thought I was just feeling normal best friend feelings for you, but then I remembered I never felt that way with El… Y/n, I love you.”
Your body propelled you forward, into her lips. She sat for a second, then she kissed you back.
Melting into the kiss, you pushed everything you felt for her into your lips as her tongue swiped along your bottom lip. Parting your lips, you felt her tongue on yours and-- the heart monitor went off, indicating that Max’s heart rate was above 90 bpm. You pulled away, grinning, and reached for her wrist.
“Feeling okay there, Max?” You could feel her pulse pounding, you knew it was going as fast as yours.
“Yeah, I-I’m okay,”
“And, for the record, I love you, too,” You were leaning in to kiss her again when the door flew open. In the doorway stood a dark figure. The person had dark, bloodshot eyes and a pained expression on their face. They stepped into Max’s room and grinned, showing bloodstained teeth. You took them in for a moment, then you flew to their side.
“Oh my God, Eddie!” Hugging him tightly, you could smell blood on his clothes, and in his hair, and the air suddenly wasn’t enough for your lungs. “Je-Jesus Christ, you’re alive!” You coughed, and then Eddie was leading you over to the chair you’d been sitting in and rooting through your bag for your inhaler. He triggered it for you because you refused to let go of him.
“Yeah, kind of,” Eddie rubbed your back comfortingly. “Hey, Red.”
“Hi,” Max’s voice was soft, her face red. “You didn’t--”
“See you guys kissing? No, no way.”
Your face heated up, “I hate you.”
“You were just saying how happy you were that I was alive.” Eddie kissed the top of your head.
“And I am, but I can still hate you. Don’t tell anyone, okay?”
“I won’t. I can’t stick around long, anyway.”
“What? Why not?”
“He knows I’m gone and he’ll assume that I went to warn you about his plan.”
“What? Who--”
“He, as in Vecna?” Max’s face was dark, her stony expression practically unreadable.
“Yeah.”

This shouldn’t hurt as much as it does.
Things could’ve ended far worse than they actually did. Hell, most of the couples in their school tended to make breakups as dramatic as possible, normally painting one half of the relationship as some kind if irredeemable monster, if not to paint them as this sympathetic martyr, than just to save face that it actually hurt.
In her case, Eddie Munson told her they just weren’t a good match and he wanted to be friends again instead. That was as healthy as they could possibly get. And in the best case scenario, too, she’d still be able to have him be a part of her life. She didn’t think she could stand the thought of seeing him in the halls and not being able to acknowledge him.
She’d fallen hard and fast for Eddie, embarrassingly so.
Given the heavy duty of designated driver for the little hooligans she’d somehow decided to adopt with Steve Harrington, she’d gotten accustomed to waiting in the high school parking lot, her nose pressed into the creases of her current novel while she waited for them to finish their important campaigns, all procured from the brilliant mind of Eddie Munson.
She’d known him before then, too, but only in passing. He’d often make a big spectacle of himself in the cafeteria just to bug the other students, and he held the record as super senior. But she’d never even talked to him until she saw him walk the boys out after a seemingly successful campaign, his arms wrapped tightly around Dustin and Lucas’ shoulders as he praised them.
He’d acknowledged her when he got to her car.
“My fair maiden,” he’d said, “I apologize for the delay.”
She’d blubbered out some kind of half-hearted response, good enough to make him laugh, and that made her heart go a million miles a minute.
It didn’t take long before she’d gotten the courage to ask him out, even if it was just for coffee. He was surprised, but he agreed.
It had been nice, he even drove her home after. She probably should’ve seen the signs then because he didn’t suggest a second meet up, she had instead. And he’d agreed.
It was about a month before they made themselves official, in Hawkins High language, practically married. But it really just meant she got to hold his hand between classes and get quick kisses goodbye when it was time to separate, somehow always on her cheek than her lips.
She’d thought their dates were fun; it was a lot of pressure since he always left it up to her, never having any other idea than lounging about her home and just watching TV. But she was the one who thought of renting movies for horror marathons, figuring it was up his alley. She thought of bowling and drive-in theaters and picnicking near the quarry for its desolate atmosphere, another thing she figured was right up his alley.
But things came to an underwhelming end when Eddie approached her at her locker on some random Thursday to tell her things just weren’t working out and he wanted to stay as friends. Despite how much even that had hurt, she agreed. She didn’t want to make him do anything he regretted.
She could still be friends with him, happily so. That meant she could still sit with him at lunch, hear his outlandish tales, and be able to admire him from afar, even if she was no longer able to touch him and hold his hand.
“Be honest,” she’d heard Gareth say as she approached with her tray, “what really happened? You know, most guys woulda killed to be able to take her out, the fact she stuck around for months is surprising enough.”
Eddie shrugs, chewing absentmindedly on a pretzel he’d brought. She would pack him lunches when they were together since he always forgot and resorted to eating prepackaged things instead. Since they broke up, it seemed like old habits really did die hard.
“To tell you the truth,” he starts rather dramatically, “no substance. Pretty face, nice voice, real sweet, but God, boring as all hell.” He runs a hand down his face. The other boys seemed surprised. Dustin and Mike share a look, but say nothing, clearly waiting to hear more. Because there was no way it could be just that. There had to be more. They knew her better than anyone, had been through so much with her. What could be the real reason Eddie broke things off?
“And?” Dustin coaxes.
“And what?”
“Dude, seriously?” Mike scoffs. “She wasn’t interesting enough for you?”
Eddie shakes his head. “Look, she’s a great gal. And I know you guys are super close, which is awesome, but we just weren’t the best match. And I felt like shit that she was putting in all of the effort when I wasn’t interested. Now she’s free to...I dunno...find someone boring, too.” He sniggers, elbowing Jeff beside him trying to get him to laugh, too, but he could see how upset Dustin and Mike were.
Luckily, for her sake, they didn’t notice her standing there, having overheard everything. Spinning right back around, she’d ditched her tray onto one of the trash bins before leaving the cafeteria completely before there was a chance anyone could see her tears.
God, it shouldn’t hurt as much as it does, she thinks again. He was more than welcome to have his own opinion, but why did it have to be something like that?
He was right, she wasn’t exactly Chrissy Cunningham or Heather Holloway, being this huge spectacle that made every new day more exciting than the last. All things considered, sometimes too much excitement frightened her. Having risked her life at least once a year for nearly four years now made her yearn for the more simple things. It was stupid of her to think Eddie would want the same. Eddie Munson, who liked to make scenes in the cafeteria and rock out in a bar with his band. He didn’t crave the simplicity of life like she did.
She didn’t go back into that cafeteria for the remaining of the lunch period. In fact, she’d decided to skip the rest of the day completely, knowing she shared three periods with Eddie and right now she really didn’t want to see him. She just wanted to get away, leave herself to her own thoughts to try to calm down.
Well, that really only lasted for ten minutes because she found herself pulling into the small parking lot into Family Video. She spots Steve’s car at the far end and knows he’s inside. It was childish of her to go running and crying to Steve Harrington, who she knew would take her side and say all the cruel things about Eddie that she couldn’t bring herself to because she really just needed someone on her side right now. Aside from Dustin and Mike, of course. She wouldn’t forget how they jumped to her defense.
The little bell rings at the top of the door as she walks in, startling Steve into consciousness, who seemed to be snoozing on the edge of the counter, drool pooled across his forearm. He wipes feverishly at his face and blinks unfocused in her direction, trying to situate himself quickly into his customer service face.
“Welcome to Fam-Jesus, you scared me,” he cuts himself off when he at last realizes it’s her. Confused, he turns to glance at the clock hung up on the wall. “Don’t tell me school’s out already? You beat Robin here.”
“No, I’m playing hooky,” she shakes her head, unsteadily moving towards the counter.
“What? You? I’m sorry, am I still dreaming?” Steve asks dramatically. “Since when do you, of all people, ever skip class? I’d sooner believe Nancy doing it than you.”
“Just...needed a break s’all,” she says with a shrug, looking around. “Keith not here?”
“Nah, he’s off today. Something about a new graphic novel he’s been dying to get. Says he’d have to wait overnight just to get one of the first editions. I don’t know, I don’t really listen to him unless he’s handing over my check,” Steve said. She leans up against the counter, trying to act casual. “Everything okay?”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t things be okay?”
“Well, for one, having to clarify that things are supposed to be okay when asked if everything’s okay is a pretty big indicator that things aren’t, in fact, okay.” Steve says with a laugh. “So everything’s not okay, then?”
“Everything’s okay,” she lies. “I just...can I ask you something?”
“Yeah?”
She isn’t sure how to come out and say it without sounding stupid. Better, she can’t figure out a way to come out and say it without sounding completely pathetic. But this was Steve, he was the king of asking her embarrassing things. He even called her once at three in the morning to ask how long you were supposed to leave cookies in the oven for. The follow up question was how to get the burnt smell out before his mom came home.
“Am I boring?”
Steve tilts his head. “Huh?”
“Am I boring, Steve? Am I boring?”
“No? Who gave you that idea?” Steve snorts, like he thinks it was a foolish thing to ask. “Whoever it is clearly hasn’t seen you handle a crowbar.” He was referencing when she’d nabbed a crowbar from the junkyard lot to fend off the demodogs with him, all to protect the little ones in the bus. She doesn’t want to remember that right now, not when it makes her feel cold inside.
“Nobody, I just...I dunno, I just think that maybe I’m not as exciting as, like...you o-or Rob or Nancy or, hell, even Jonathan.”
“Nonsense, you’re a badass! True story, you know I wouldn’t say that about just any...” Steve trails off, finally really looking at her. “Hey...hey, why are you really askin’ me that? Something happen? Someone say something to you?”
“No, Steve, I was just asking.”
“You’re lying,” he accuses. “Who was it, was it Byers? Nancy? Not Robin...”
“No! No, Steve, they didn’t say anything, please just drop it. I shouldn’t have asked.”
Steve’s face eventually relaxes, having realized he knew exactly who she was talking about.
“Munson.”
She shakes her head. “Stop it, Steve.”
“What did he say? I thought he just wanted to be friends, where’s all this coming from?” he asked. There were too many questions being thrown at her. She doesn’t want to cry, especially not in front of him, but as soon as she feels her cheek dampen that was it. Soon she was burying her face in her hands and trying to stop the little whimpers from coming out.
She doesn’t notice Steve leap easily over the counter. He pulls her close, shushing her quietly.
“Hey, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you upset,” he says. She sniffles, wrapping her arms around him. He’s petting her hair, kissing the crown of her head, trying his damndest to get her to calm down and talk to him. He was the perfect person to come to, she now realizes. Her subconscious knew Steve was the answer.
When she finally stopped crying, he at last let her go, giving her some space.
She rubs the tears from her eyes and wipes the tears on her jeans.
“Want me to kill him?” he asks jokingly. She laughs. He smiles again. “What happened? Can you tell me now?”
She told him what Eddie had said, the real reason he’d broken up with her and how she ran from the cafeteria and came here. Steve was reasonably upset, but he didn’t want to make it all about pounding Eddie into a pulp, he knew she needed her friend right now and he was prepared to be just that.
“Hey, screw him,” Steve scoffs, throwing an arm over her shoulders and pulling her back into his chest. “You’re far from boring, believe me, and honestly if you ask me you could do so much better than Eddie Munson. The guy picks his nose. I saw him once. It was gnarly.”
She’s laughing again, playfully hitting him.
“Thank you, Steve,” she says, “I’m sorry to dump all this on you, I just needed someone to talk to, you know?”
“Well, you came to the right guy. I can’t tell you it gets much better from public humiliation, but I can tell you that you find much better shit to focus on. Like this obviously stellar job. Robin. My new stereo I saved up for. And...well, you.” He playfully flicks her nose. She wrinkles her nose and swats his hand away. “Eddie doesn’t know what he’s talkin’ about. But I know he’s gonna kick himself in the ass when he realizes he lost a girl like you.”
“Yeah, you’re just saying that ‘cause you’re my friend.”
“Not true, I also wanna bug you for your famous cookies.” Steve winks.
“I can bring them to you tonight, then.” she said, patting his arm. “I should get going. Um...you clearly are very busy and I don’t wanna keep you from doing your job.”
“I know, such a bad influence. The gateway rebellion was skipping class. Now it’s job defiance,” Steve chuckles, rubbing the back of his neck. “Hey, um...if you want, when you come by tonight, maybe you could stick around? Was gonna rifle through the back, borrow some flicks to waste my evening away. Free to join me if you want? Robin flaked out on me, says she’s doing some band practice with Vicky. Didn’t ask for details.”
She thinks about it and smiles. “Sounds like fun. Girls’ night.”
“Invitation rescinded!” Steve shouts, turning away.
“No, I’m kidding, I’m kidding, stop!” she protests, giggling. “I’ll bring cookies and pizza, Steve. I’ll be there.”
“Alright, then,” Steve said. “Um...hey, don’t worry about Eddie, alright? He’s just being a dick. And honestly, apart from his relationship with the rugrats, he’s still gonna be a dick. He missed out on a girl like you. Clearly he’s a martian.”
“Doesn’t mean much when I’m from Hawkins. But thank you, Steve. I’ll see you tonight,” she says, squeezing his hand and finally leaving the store back to her car. She left feeling much lighter than she had going in. He was right. Forget Eddie. If he thought she was so boring he clearly didn’t need her around him. She had other friends, friends like Steve.
Smiling to herself, she climbs into the driver’s seat and turns the key into the ignition, hearing the engine roar to life.
Things would be just fine.

Lipstick Stains
Tumblr media
Billy Hargrove x Harrington FemReader
Summary: There has been some new gossip floating through Hawkins High. The gossip being that Billy has a lipstick stain that just so happens to match a certain girl's iconic shade.
....................................................................
You were a Harrington. You had a certain standing that you had to keep cause of the expectations of your parents. One of those expectations were not making out with Billy Hargrove in his car in the back of the school parking lot during lunch. But your parents were never home so you didn't really give a damn.
"Billy we have to go back into the school at some point." You said releasing your lips from his. As you tried to pull back he pulled you in for another quick kiss.
"Oh come on, we don't have to." He smirked to you.
"Listen Mr. Bad Boy, I know you don't like school but I have a test." You said to him. He gave you a small pout at your response to which you just laughed at him. "You also messed up my lipstick." You said as you flipped the visor down to use the mirror to reapply your dark red lipstick.
"That's not the only thing I can mess up." He joked. You just gave him the look, he knew the look. It didn't need a name.
"Well Hargrove I have to get going." You brought yourself close to kiss his neck then up to the apple of his freckled cheeks. You collected you things to go back into the school before the bell. Before you shut the door you look back at Billy to see the two kiss marks that you left on him. You just smiled at him.
"Love ya, see you later." You said then shut the door to go to the school.
Billy continued with his day like usual. Thinking that nothing would go out of the ordinary. He knew he was hot shit so people were staring at him as perusal but he didn't know what they were staring at. In each class he had stares his way, to which he had to tell some off for looking too long.
"Nice job man." Tommy Hagan laughed as he patted his back. Billy was just confused about what he was talking about but he continued as nothing was wrong. The bell rang through the halls to signal that the school day was over. Billy made his way to the doors top the parking lot to leave when he saw a certain Steve Harrington staring him down from his locker.
"You got a problem Harrington?" He asked.
"Yeah, not with you though." Steve replied slamming his locker shut to go find a certain sister of his. Billy didn't know that, he was just confused and thought nothing of it. He finally was able to make it to his Camaro to wait for Max. Students around him were still looking at him. Some girls looking in distaste, not at him but at the kiss marks on his cheeks. Some guys were just laugh in congrats to him. Billy just wanted to get the hell out and get Max home so he can go see his girlfriend. Billy looked over to see a certain red head making her way over to his car.
"Get in shit-bird, I got places to be." He said as he got in the drivers seat while Max got in the passenger seat. She just stared at him, more than she would usually. Which is not at all. Billy glanced at her a few times.
"What?" He asked annoyed with her staring.
"What's on your face?" She asked. Billy was confused until he thought back to lunch. He grabbed his sun visor to look himself in the mirror to see the two kiss marks on him. Just as he thought, one on his cheek and the other on his neck. He just laughed what he was looking at.
"Well that explains a Lot." He sighed starting his car to drive away.
Later that day Billy was able to make it to the Harrington house hold. Instead of parking down the street, he parked in the driveway. Instead of climbing through the window of his girlfriends bedroom, he simply knocked the front door of her house. Which, unfortunately, the other Harrington answered. He and Steve just stared at one another for a moment.
"Hargrove."
"Harrington."
"What are you doing here?"
"I think you know why exactly I'm here, or you don't."
"I do know why you're here." Steve stated sternly.
"Then tell me, why am I here?" Billy gabbed at him with a smirk playing on his face.
"Can you guys stop having a dick measuring contest for once." Your voice was heard in a very much over it tone. "Get out of here Steve."
"But-" You stopped him from continuing.
"Eh, I don't wanna hear any more then I already have. You're being a Buttface." You sassed at him. "Now I would like to talk to my boyfriend."
Steve just rolled his eyes and sighed. Walking away from his enemy and his sister in the same door way. You turn your head back to Billy with a grin on your face.
"So what are you doing here, handsome."
"Well, I am here to see my girlfriend that I have to have a small chat about." His voice going a slight octave lower. Something that you loved.
"And what do you have to chat about?" You stilled teased at him.
"Well I made out with this gorgeous woman at lunch, and after I thought my day would go by like usual. But I had people staring at me all day. I didn't know why until I looked into the mirror to find that the exact pretty girl I was kissing left some marks on me." He explained to you. "Now I am at said pretty girls house to get a reason why she did that."
"Well I think she just wanted to have a bit of fun with you, if you ask me."
"Well as much as I love that, I think I would love to have some fun with her right now."
"Well you'er gonna have to wait on that, handsome." You said." Big Bro ain't to happy with me, I've been getting an ear full for the past hour."
"I can wait." He reassured. "I will always wait for you, gorgeous." You just smiled at him and dragged him into your house.
"Is he staying long?" Steve's distant voice was heard.
"Shut up Steve." You yelled out to him. "Like I said, ear full all day."
You and Billy just laughed at the situation. But at least you both can enjoy each others company in the end.
...................................................................
I hope y'all enjoyed this. Sorry if it is short. I know I haven't been to active, writing wise, lately. I'm trying to get through school right now.
I will try to get more out for Boots and Trumpets, and Practically Magic later.
Thank you for reading.

More Than A Feeling
Tumblr media
This was just a random idea to distract me from revising for my exams. I'm slightly obsessed with him at the moment and just wanted to write some fluff that would make me even more sad than i already am. I know I also said that I would be doing a bucky barnes fic but... i got distracted and now can't commit to writing it. I'll probably write it eventually but i can't bring myself to do it right now.
I was also listening to More Than A Feeling by Boston when writing this so... it stuck.
Just a small fic of Steve Harrington and a bookworm reader girlfriend who is also Dustin's sister after their first time and the "chaos" that ensues.
Warnings: Fluff fluff fluff, Suggestive, Both Steve's and Reader's 'first time'
Steve Harrington x Henderson!Reader
Dustin couldn't understand how it all happened or exactly when you stopped disliking the King of Hawkins but he was convinced it would all end in heartbreak. He did like Steve Harrington after he protected them all from all the dangers they had faced over the years. But dating his sister was a different matter.
To say he is overprotective of you would be an understatement.
You had spent your entire life protecting him from bullies and assholes and now it was his turn to keep you from the possible heartbreak that was Steve Harrington.
So when he peaked through the door to your room and saw the two of you curled round each other fast asleep, he couldn't help but feel upset and scared for you. It clearly wasn't the first time Steve had snuck through the window without anyone but you knowing and the thought brought disgust to his gut. He had invited his friends round as your parents were away. He now regretted the idea and wished he had agreed when Mike suggested his house instead.
He wasn't being dramatic, he had every right to believe that you could end up like all the other girls.
Before he could wake you both up, though, his friends had pulled him back and disappeared back into his room to discuss what they had just seen.
Steve, on the other hand, couldn't be happier.
Your head rests on his chest, arms wrapped round his body. A sheet covers you and he brings his hand up and down your arm gently as he gazes at you asleep. He has been like this since he woke up to see you curled round him, hair a mess, no makeup on and breathing softly onto his bare chest.
What had happened the night before had surprised you both, if he was quite honest with himself. He had been ready from the second date with you but you had made it clear that you wanted to wait. He had thought he was ready when he dated Nancy but when the time came, he froze and ruined the moment.
But now, here you were snuggled up close with memories of the night before playing through your dreams as your boyfriend watches over you lovingly. He can't remember ever loving anyone as much as he loves you and all he wants is to tell you, and keep you by his side till the day he dies.
Just as his hand stops grazing your arm, you roll over off of him and wriggle onto your side, still facing him. Your lips pull up into a brief smile before dropping again. He shifts his body onto his side too and props his head onto his arms, watching as your eyebrows pull together and your eyes flutter open slowly.
A huge grin falls onto his lips as you look up groggily with a bashful smile.
"Morning, beautiful." His voice is still husky from sleep and a thousand butterflies take flight in your stomach.
"Morning." You rub a hand over your eyes to try and wake up properly, to no avail.
"I was gonna make breakfast, if you're hungry." He lifts his head off his arm to give you a playful look that is sleepily returned.
He gets up from the bed and tries to track down his trousers and socks before perching on the edge of the bed to give you a soft kiss that lingers longer than usual.
His blushing face then leaves your eyesight and you roll onto your back with a disbelieving laugh, quickly covering your mouth to stifle it.
You were still questioning how the two of you were even together, total opposites from different sides of the school. The King and a bookworm.
You suppose, in a weird way, you could thank the horrors that you had both witnessed over the past two years for bringing you together. But you don't want to give the Upside-Down any credit for your happiness given it was a hell like no other.
You can still remember how much you had disliked him at first, the way he acted, the way he spoke to people, the way he made you feel about yourself. His "friends" had given you hell for years and when he had finally stood up to them and broken up with Nancy, you had seen the better version of Steve Harrington who laughed and smiled and actually cared without any fear of being judged.
As you lie on your back, you cans still feel the gentle press of his hands on your skin, hear the whispered words "Are you sure?". Still feel his face buried in the crook of your neck, hear the hushed laughter when he first appeared over you with a bashful "Hello."
It couldn't have been more perfect and you could smile forever in your new bliss.
You wrestle your way out of the warmth of the bedsheets, grabbing the closest article of clothing to you: his navy sweater from yesterday. The sleeves fall over your hands and you bunch it up in fists as you open the door and walk into the hallway.
Dustin's door is still closed and you creep past, so as not to wake him. He wouldn't quit poking fun at you or Steve if he saw you now so it was better to be safe than sorry to leave him sleeping in. It was the holidays anyway.
You're suddenly startled by the sound of pots and pans crashing against each other, followed by the sound of a terribly hidden string of curses as whoever spilled the contents of the cupboard tried (and failed) to catch them.
When you reach the kitchen door, you can see Steve busy at the stove, pots and pans sitting haphazardly on the counter and floor. Without a word, you lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, and watch him attempt to work the stove. A smile plays on your lips and eventually, you clear your throat quietly to get his attention.
He whips round, only to notice that it's you.
"Morning... again." You murmur softly, still smiling.
God, it was like you slept with a hanger in your mouth or something.
"Morning," He turns away as his cheeks blush bashfully, and you can't help but feel warmth at the thought of making Steve Harrington blush. The thought nearly turns your legs to jelly and you walk over to the stove to keep them working.
You swat his hands away from the buttons with a laugh and stand in his place to turn the stove on, hearing his almost silent "Oh." as you show him how to work it.
His arms snake their way round your middle and his chin falls onto your shoulder, your face heating at the contact. He places soft kisses on your shoulder, then your neck, and you run your hands along his forearms.
"Steve." You feel him hug you tighter at his name and his hum of acknowledgement is disguised by another kiss, "Last night..."
You trail off and he laughs against your neck, moving away to turn you round. His nose scrunches as your hands move to the ends of his hair out of habit and he sways slightly.
"Yeah?" You can tell he's wanting you to talk more and you repress a sigh.
"I just wanted to say I..." You can't seem to finish the sentence as you gaze into his eyes, the whole scene perfectly homely. You didn't want to ruin it with a love confession that might be rejected.
He watches you with curious smirk and you open your mouth to speak again but he cuts you off with a sweet, slow kiss.
Your hands move further into his hair and his pull you closer by the waist. More memories of meaningful kisses and the whispered confessions whilst pressed close together from last night resurface in your mind. The feeling of his hands, his lips, just his touch made your head spin and your forehead falls onto his, not breaking the kiss.
"Oh come on!"
Your brother's voice startles you both and you break apart, Steve keeping a hold of your waist.
Dustin stands in the doorway, his friends lingering in the hallway, awkwardly watching the scene playing out. You feel your face burn and turn to your boyfriend for help, but he seems entirely unfazed.
"A bit of privacy wouldn't kill you, Henderson." Steve grumbles, ignoring the disgust on Dustin's face.
"I live here." Dustin replies matter-of-factly, crossing his arms.
"And..?" You can't help but hold back a laugh at your boyfriend's oblivion and he pulls a face at you which lets the laughter escape.
Dustin pulls a different kind of face, "Well, when you two are finished grossing everyone out, I'd like some pancakes."
You roll your eyes and walk over to him, placing your hands on his shoulders to turn him round. He begins to protest but gives up when you give him a sharp pinch on either side.
"Just go upstairs and do whatever it is you do together there," You give him your most serious look you can muster with a stomach full of butterflies.
"Fine," He stomps up the stairs, "But I'm serious about those pancakes!"
You watch his friends follow him up, quickly noticing the two girls and yell up a quick "Leave the door open!" before turning to return to the kitchen.
Max stops and gives you a look that makes you freeze and eye her curiously.
"Yes?" You ask quietly.
"I was just thinking that the sweater is real subtle." Her eyes move along the sweater and you shift uncomfortably under them.
"I-I don't know what you mean..."
She snorts out a laugh and runs up the stairs.
"Nice hickey, by the way!" She yells after her and you throw a shoe up the stairs that hits her legs.
"Teenagers." You mutter under your breath and turn back to the kitchen to see Steve leaning against the counter, a smirk playing on his pretty lips.
"Want to tell me what's going on in that head of yours, Harrington?" Your voice is quiet and he closes the distance between the two of you in four long strides.
His thumb grazes your chin, pushing your face up to his before he kisses you again, a contented sigh escaping him. Once again, your hands find his messy hair and he grips the sweater with a little more power than before.
"God, I love you." His words are almost hidden against your lips but you freeze and pull away slightly, out of breath from both the kiss and his confession.
A blush creeps up his face and you can't help but smile before giving him another quick peck on his lips, relief filling you.
How can you have thought this man didn't love you enough to say it when he had blushed and grinned the entire morning. You love him to Jupiter and back a thousand times and realise, you had always really known he feels the same.
So, when the words leave your mouth and leave him a blushing mess, you can't help but know that this is your future.
You and him.
"I love you too."

certified lover boy |modern!eddie munson x reader|
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
prompt: max tells eddie he's a simp for you, and maybe he is. no, he most definitely is.
contains: language, mentions of drugs, modern!eddie and reader, mentions to mature themes 18+
"Baby, you just tell me what you want, and I'll pick it up, alright?" Eddie cooed into the screen of his phone, eyes flicking from you back to the road. One hand gripped the iPhone, the other held the wheel of the mustang, cruising down the backroads of Hawkins.
Max snarled her nose in disgust, eyes cutting over to Eddie. "Ok. I think I want pizza. Do you want me to order it and get it delivered?" Your voice carried through the car's speakers, the shuffling of whatever task you were doing in the background.
"If that's what you want to do." Eddie replied sweetly. "Or we can go out."
"I don't think I want to go out." You sighed. "I'll order it. I think I just want pizza and maybe to smoke a teeny tiny blunt. Is that ok?"
Eddie snorted. "That's fine with me. I have some papers with me."
"Will you roll it for me?" You asked sweetly. The sweetest Max had ever heard you speak. She wondered if you knew she was in the car.
"I always do, baby." Eddie purred lowly back at you, giving you a dazzling, dimpled smile. Max gagged silently, dramatically over Eddie's shoulder but he ignored her. "I gotta drop Red off, and then I'll be over."
"Ok," You hummed. "You want your usual?"
"Please?" Eddie grinned. "I'll Venmo you for it."
"I got it, Ed." You snorted lightly. "My treat. You just bring the weed."
Eddie rolled his eyes playfully. "Ok, I'll see you soon. Bye, baby."
"Bye." You chirped.
Eddie's eyes flicked towards the screen. "Love you." He added.
You smiled through the screen. "Love you." You replied before the call ended.
Eddie pocketed his phone, Max's face disgusted, nose twisted up in repulsion. "You're down bad, Munson." She scoffed, shaking her head.
Eddie rolled his eyes. "What?" He shrugged, she gave him a pointed look. "Oh, I'm down bad because I'm in love?"
"Ew!"
"What?" Eddie threw his hand out.
Max shook her head. "You're just... I don't know, it's gross." She shuddered. "You're all simpy for her."
"Simpy?" Eddie gawked.
"Yeah, you're a total fucking simp. It's gross." Max laughed.
Eddie rolled his eyes. "Whatever. I am not a simp." He grumbled, defensive and a little huffy. He felt his phone ding in the center console, your name popping up followed by a string of emojis.
Max gave him a pointed look. "Really?" She asked sarcastically. "Really you're not?"
"Shut up." Eddie huffed, turning his phone over so she couldn't see the screen anymore. "Y'know, make fun of me all you want, but one day you're gonna be in love too-"
"-Oh, God, Eddie, please stop. 'M gonna be sick-"
"-I see the way you look at Sinclair. You think he won't make a move on you one day and you won't be the same way?" Eddie challenged.
Max blushed deep, the red on her cheeks nearly matching her hair. "Shut up. Me and Lucas are just friends you freak." She huffed.
Eddie snorted. "Right." He looked over at her playfully.
Max's eyes narrowed at him, blistering glare that Eddie just rolled his eyes at, he was used to it. "Whatever," She huffed, when Eddie pulled into the gravel drive of her trailer. "I'll never be a simp like you Munson." She declared smugly, reaching for the door handle.
"Right, you keep telling yourself that." Eddie snorted. "You just worry about selling that shit, you got me? We gotta settle up with Rick this Saturday."
"I got it." Max rolled her eyes, patting her backpack full of weed. "I'll have it sold by tomorrow. Going to a party tomorrow."
Eddie nodded. "You need a ride?"
"No," Max blushed, pausing for a moment. "Lucas is taking me."
Eddie barked out a laugh, clapping his hands together. "Oh really? Lover boy's gonna take you?"
Max huffed. "Shut up. We're just friends." She slammed the door to his Mustang. Eddie rolled down the window. "You go enjoy your pizza."
"Oh, I will." Eddie grinned, pushing the gear stick back.
"You're getting weak in the knees, Munson!" Max called from the steps. "Stand up, you fuckin' simp!"
Eddie laughed, shaking his head before pulling out of the driveway. If only she knew, Eddie grinned to himself, looking down at his phone. His heart rate picked up at your little message, 'on it's way. see you soon drive safe :)' so minimal- it had no business making his head spin the way it did, foot pressing further on the gas.
Probably for the best Max didn't know how in deep he was with you, she'd tease him relentlessly if she did. But how could he not be? You were perfect, Eddie was sure of it.
The way you always smiled so wide when you saw him, even when you had a bad day, your eyes lit up, grin crinkling up to your eyes. You’d hug him tight, muttering a quiet, “Hi, baby,” that always left him floating.
He’d bury his face in your neck, inhaling your scent deep. Your skin, your perfume- fuck, you smelled so good, intoxicating to him. He’d secretly spray your perfume, the pink, slender bottle on your nightstand, all over his clothes before he’d leave, pressing his nose to his collar when he wanted a whiff of you. Carrying you with him through the sweet scent of your perfume.
Or the way you’d hold his hand when you two would walk through the mall, lazily bumping hips while he carried the bags- he always insisted on carrying the bags. You’d drag him into Sephora or Aerie, and he’d just stand there with the basket, letting you pile it up and not complaining once.
He loved it the most when you’d go try things on. When he got to see you come out, spinning around and examining your body in the clothes. He had an excuse to gawk at you openly. You’d get frustrated when he’d tell you that you should get everything you tried on, that you looked good in anything you tried on.
He like it when you’d stop and smell candles, holding the open jar out towards him, giggling when he’d wrinkle his nose in displeasure at the scent. “No?” You’d raise your brows playfully, he’d shake his head.
He‘d get positively smitten when you’d sit at the Hideout with him, recording and snapping pictures on your phone of him and the boys to post later. Filming TikToks and hoping they’d go viral. One did, once, they’d gained some traction off of it and he was so thankful for you. Smiling proudly when you reported the video’s growth, and it spreading even wider across your face when the boys cheered you on for it.
He loved how funny you were, even when you didn’t mean to be. Pulling faces that left him shaking with laughter, or snarky comments that he couldn’t help but grin at. You were mean when you wanted to be, a little hedgehog with a prickly exterior and a soft underbelly. You were protective of him, he knew that. Saw it when you’d snap and sneer at the waitress who got too flirty, eyes daggers that scared her off. Just as venomous, if not worse, when some guy flirted with you at a party. Sending him retreating with his tail tucked between his legs, your hand on Eddie’s leg or wrapped around him, touching him somehow to show your claim. You usually would kiss him deep, trailing down his neck and sucking a deep bruise into the porcelain skin of his neck. It was more PDA than you usually would give, but with him, you didn’t care- it drove him wild in the best way.
He was glad Max or anyone else wasn’t around to see how soft he got around you. Especially in the intimacy of your relationship, when the two of you were alone. He’d lay on top of you, head in your chest, smothering himself into your breasts while you played with his hair. Twisting and twirling the ringlets around your finger, pressing kisses to his head while he laid there, letting himself be babied by you. He never expected you to be so caring and sweet like that, it had taken a while for that side to come through, but once you showed him a tiny shred of it, he was hooked for life.
Eddie liked how sweet you were then, but nothing compared to how sweet you were to him when he was between your legs, lapping at your cunt like it was his lifeline. Like his only purpose in life was to please you, and he was convinced it was. Your voice would lilt, nasally and high- nearing a whine. You’d sing his praises, back arched and writing while he devoured you. You were so sweet, tasted so sweet, sounded so sweet. To hell with what anyone else thought about you, Eddie knew you were sweet, his sweet girl.
And you knew him too, the Eddie that the world didn’t see- or he tried not to let see. The sweet, dedicated, lovestruck boy who bended to your whim. Who would do anything and everything for you, did everything for you. Eddie Munson, the simp- no, the certified lover boy. Your certified sweet lover boy.

Part 2
Eddie Munson x Henderson reader road trip au
Pairing: Eddie Munson x Henderson Reader
Warnings:none
Word count: 3,782
Tumblr media
An hour into your trip, you hear the first dreaded “I have to pee.” Of course, it came from Dustin.
"Really, come on, man, we’re barely even a town over,” Eddie groaned, pulling into the next gas despite his sentiment.
“I’m sorry,” he whined, dashing out of the car the moment Eddie put it in park.
“Maybe we should all try to and we can grab some snacks” Steve suggested Ever, the mother of the group.
"Ugh, fine,” Eddie groaned, throwing his head back. “But no drinks!” He yelled as your friends dashed out of the vehicle. “I mean it!”
“There’s no way they actually listen,” you told him, giggling as you got out of the car Eddie close behind.
“My lady,” Eddie said, smiling brightly as he opened the door for you, bowing slightly.
“Why thank you, kind sir,” you said, giggling and curtsying as you walked in.
After using the restroom, you were scanning the isles for a snack. Indecisive as ever, you finally settled on a bag of Cheez-Its, a pack of gum, and a nougat bar Dustin’s favorite for when he inevitably complains about being snacky (when he’s hungry but doesn’t want real food).
"This all,” the teen at the counter asked. Well, you think she was asking, but her deadpan tone made it hard to tell.
"Yup,” you said, smiling.
She looked up from your snacks, her unamused glare fixed on you.
“Hey sweetheart, spot me a pack of smokes?" You felt his arm before you heard his voice as he hung it lazily over your shoulder.
Casual touches like this almost fooled you enough to think that the boy you’ve been crushing on since you saw him perform at the middle school talent show actually liked you, or at least thought of you as more than his friends older sister, but then reality would always come crashing down on you when you remembered that Eddie was like that with everyone the pet names, teasing remarks, and touching. I mean, the boy was a walking ball of love to give, constantly looking for a new friend or a new lost sheep he could take under his wing.
No matter how many people teased him, judged him unfairly, or called him the most unspeakable things, he never gave up and always kept that signature Eddie Munson smile that simultaneously lit up the room and made you weak in the knees.
“Y/N?” Eddie asked, his concern-ridden face pulling you out of your thoughts as his arm slid awkwardly off your shoulder.
“Oh, yeah, I can,” you said, turning back to the unamused teen. “Uh, and a pack of Malboro Reds, please,” you told the cashier, surprised that the frown she was wearing could get deeper.
“You know my brand?” You could practically hear the shock in his voice—a deep blush taking over your cheeks.
"Yeah, I guess,” you mumbled as you paid for your things, purposely avoiding his eyes that were boring into you. “What?” You asked, turning back to look at him and handing him the cigarettes.
His doe eyes were soft, and there was a remnant of a smile he was holding back on his face.
"Nothing,” he answered through an awkward cough. “Come on, sunshine, the ass crack of America awaits.” He finished turning around to grab the door for you.
You quickly followed, telling the teen at the counter thank you and to have a nice day.
As you made it outside, Eddie broke off to go lean against the wall to smoke. As you finally made it back to the van, your cheeks were still ablaze from your interaction.
Everyone but Steve had made it back to the van, already getting settled in, to hopefully not stop for at least a couple hours.
After about 5 minutes, Eddie and Steve returned, Steve having two huge bags of snacks, so you wouldn’t have to get any more, hopefully.
"Alright, hellions, buckle up. We’re not stopping for a while,” Eddie said, pulling out of the gas station. “I’m just kidding. Of course, my van does not have seatbelts.”
***
"Eddie, I’m hungry,” Lucas whined, poking the boy in the cheek. “Can we please stop? You made us skip lunch.” He finished continuing to poke him.
"Sinclair, you poke me one more time, and I’ll cut your hand off and make you eat it. How’s that sound for dinner?” Eddie said it through clenched teeth and crazy eyes.
Lucas stopped his finger inches away from the boy's cheek cautiously after a moment of testing the waters; he seemingly gave up pulling his hand back.
Eddie let out a sigh of relief, unclenching his jaw, and everything was peaceful for about two seconds until Lucas decided that poking the bear was the best idea he could think of, poking Eddie’s cheek once more, smirking mischievously.
“That’s it!” Eddie yelled, pulling off to the side of the road, making all of you tussle in place as he abruptly stopped the car out of his seat as quick as lightning to tackle the younger boy to the ground. He was so quick, you almost missed the smirk fall off of Lucas’s face and the horror take over his eyes.
Which is how you found yourself in the driver's seat, looking out for a place to stop for dinner, with Eddie in the passenger seat slumped down, arms crossed over his chest as he pouted.
"Alright, let’s all get some food in us and stretch our legs, yeah?” You asked as you pulled into the first dinner you’d spotted.
Lucas and Dustin rushed out of the vehicle, the former fully recovering from the tackle he’d taken.
Robin Max and Steve took more time getting out, following the two rambunctious boys.
You, however, stayed in the van, waiting for the boy in the passenger seat to look anywhere but out the window quietly.
"Oh, come on, Ed's, you know you're hungry too,” you said, turning in your seat to face him fully. “And maybe your a tad hangry, and that’s why you tackled Lucas?”
"No, I tackled him because the little shit wouldn’t stop poking me,” Eddie snapped, finally turning to you, and while the vicious gaze of Eddie Munson was terrifying for most people, you thought it was adorable. He looked like a puppy trying to threaten you like a teddy bear with a knife.
“So you’re saying if it had been Steve in the driver's seat and he wouldn’t stop to get you food, you wouldn’t have done the same thing?” You challenged him, raising a brow. His frown softened a bit, a mischievous glint in his eyes, you assume, at the thought of annoying Steve Harrington.
"See, you’d think it was hilarious if it were Steve; your little sheep was just following in your footsteps.”
"Yeah, but they’re supposed to annoy other people, not me,” he grumbled, though you could tell he was starting to come around.
“Oh well, now you’re just asking too much,” you teased. “Now come on, I’ll buy you a milkshake,” you told him, hopping out of the driver's seat.
“Chocolate?” Eddie asked, head-whipped, to look at you.
"Ugh, fine, but I’m going to judge you for it,” you said, rolling your eyes as you shut the door and walked inside, Eddie following closely behind.
“Woah woah woah, sweetheart, are you trying to tell me you don’t like chocolate milkshakes?” Eddie asked, dramatic as ever, his hair whipping around as he shook his head.
“I mean, they’re fine, but vanilla is definitely better,” you said, shrugging. Eddie gasped loudly, clutching a hand to his chest.
“I can’t believe you just said that to me,” he said quickly as he pulled out a seat, gesturing for you to sit down.
You sat down flustered as Robin raised a brow at you, which only made your blush deepen.
“What’d you say to him?” Max asked.
“Get this, Red; she thinks vanilla milkshakes are better than chocolate,” Eddie scoffed before you could get a word.
Leading the table into a lively debate, with some taking your side while others took Eddie’s.
“You guys are all wrong. It’s obviously strawberry." Steve cut in your heads, all turning to him with disgusted looks.
"Okay, everyone can at least agree that Steve’s wrong, right?” Robin asks, eyes darting around the group as you all nod, “All right, it’s unanimous, Steve’s an idiot.” She finishes, and Steve looks offended while all of you laugh.
"Alright, I need to go smoke. You guys stress me out." Eddie shook his head, smiling.
“Those things will kill you,” you said, popping a fry into your mouth.
"Hey, you’re the one supplying me, so don’t get all high and mighty on me now, princess,” Eddie smirked as you rolled your eyes.
“That was a temporary lapse in judgment; I was distracted,” you shrugged, trying to play it cool, though the obvious blush on your face was giving you away.
"Aww, you saying I distract ya doll face?” Eddie asked, leaning in close.
"Ew, dude, are you really flirting with my sister right now?” Dustin interrupted, gagging immediately after he got the question out.
“See what I mean? Little fuckers are so annoying, I’m surprised I don’t smoke more,” he groaned, placing a cigarette between his lips as he stood up and made his way to the door.
“I’ve got to go to the bathroom,” you announced, getting up and speed-walking to the bathroom flustered.
"Really, Dustin,” Max scolded, smacking him in the back of the head.
"Ow, what was that for?”
“You totally just ruined their moment. Eddie was finally growing some balls, and you just stomped on them,” Lucas explained.
“What?” Dustin asked again, and the poor boy was obviously very confused.
"Really, Dustin, do we have to explain everything to you? You’re not a child,” Steve quipped sarcastically.
“What these doofuses are getting at is that Eddie has just now started shooting his shot, and you might have just deterred him for another what is it like nine years?.” Robin explained hoping the young boy would catch on.
"Wait, are you guys saying Eddie actually likes Y/N?”
“Oh my gosh, look at those boys. Sherlock finally figured one out,” Steve said, slow-clapping.
“Shut up, Steve,” Dustin seethed. “So Eddie likes Y/N? Does she like him?”
"Obviously,” Max yelled, quickly apologizing when most of the eyes in the restaurant turned to her.
“So all those times he’s called her hot, he wasn’t just doing that to annoy me?” Dustin asked, still bewildered by the new information.
“While I’m sure that is a perk,Steve started sitting up in his chair to pat Dustin on the back. “He’s got it; he's had it bad since his first senior year,Steve finished shrugging.
“I can’t believe one of my best friends has a crush on my sister, and none of you told me,” Dustin pouted.
“We thought you knew it was pretty obvious,” Max said, rolling her eyes.
“I don’t want to think about that; it’s gross.”
"Well, you better get used to it because our mission this trip is to get them together,” Robin told him as the group nodded in agreement. “And it was working perfectly without us having to do anything but put them in seats next to each other, and you might have just ruined it,” Robin grumbled.
“How am I supposed to know if you don’t tell me?!” Dustin argued.
“Tell you what?” Eddie asked, making the group jump and turn to look at the boy.
"Umm, uh, that there’s been something in his teeth for a while,” Lucas said as casually as he could.
"Nice,” Max complemented under her breath.
“Okay?” Eddie said, taking a seat and continuing to eat his food, “Hey, where’s Y/N?” He asked through a mouth full of food.
“She went to the bathroom,” Steve shrugged, sipping his milkshake.
Eddie’s head instinctively snapped towards the bathroom door, a deep frown falling over his features. When he was met with the beautiful sight of your smile and the crushing feeling that washed over him, he saw a guy, the one making you smile.
Eddie’s glare made everyone’s eyes shift to the bathroom as you giggled behind your hand at something the boy said.
And before the smart part of Eddie’s brain could even think of telling him to stay seated, he was on his feet, speeding faster than he could think.
You noticed him before he could even get a word out, turning to smile at him. “Hey Eddie, what’s up?” You asked, brows furrowed, man; he was so screwed if all it took was you smiling at him to turn him into jelly.
"Hey, sweetheart,” Eddie said, composing himself to smirk at you. “Who's your friend?” He asked, glaring daggers into the man in front of you.
"Oh, this is Chad; he saw me looking at maps and said he’s traveling west too,” you told him, smiling.
“How convenient,” Eddie bit out, his voice lashing in sarcasm.
"Yeah, man, a total coincidence,” Chad said, returning Eddie’s glare.
The two men stood in unmoving silence, glaring daggers at each other. You furrowed your brows, looking between them, rolling your eyes as far back into your head as they could go at your realization. “Oh my, are you two having a staring contest right now?” you asked, shaking your head in disbelief.
You took their unblinking silence as an answer: “Stop it, you doofus!” You exclaimed, smacking his arm lightly.
“Hey!” Eddie shrieked, “You made me lose!”
“Lose what exactly? What would’ve happened at the end of that contest? What would you have won?” You asked, arms crossing over your chest.
“I’m not exactly a hundred percent on the rules, but I’m pretty sure he gets you now,” Eddie deadpanned.
“Dude, I thought we were just asserting dominance.”
Eddie looked at the man with an expression somewhere between shock, disgust, and anger. “And that’s who won, thanks to you, sweetheart.”
“I’m not some prize, Munson,” you scoffed, walking back towards your friends.
"Yeah, no shit. I was joking that dude never would’ve beat me fair and square anyway.”
“I don’t need you to fight my battles or win me, and also, I was just talking to someone new. What is your issue?” You asked, turning to face him as you made it out in front of the diner.
“What’s my issue?!” Eddie challenged, “I don’t know, haven’t you ever heard of stranger danger? The guy was practically eye-fucking you the whole conversation.”
“So?” You asked, making Eddie scoff.
“So? So?” He asked back in unbelief, “You know what? Fine, whatever have fun getting murdered in the back of some creeps van!” Eddie exclaimed, arms waving, as he turned on his heels to stomp to the van.
“You’re unbelievable, you know that,” you said, stomping after him, “and stop walking away.” You grabbed his hand, making him turn to you and ask, “Why do you care so much?”
Eddie pulled you towards him effortlessly, pinning you up against the back of the van out of view of your friends.
His breath was hot and rugged as it fanned over your face, his doe eyes peering into your soul as he examined your face, his gaze darting between your lips and eyes.
“I care because I want you to be mine,” he whispered in your ear, his hand coming up to cup the side of your neck as you sucked in a breath. “You want that, baby?” Eddie teased biting your earlobe, and you whimpered.
"Oh, don’t worry, pretty girl, you will soon enough,” Eddie told you, inches away from your face, lips so close to touching as your body tingled in anticipation. Just as Eddie was about to close the gap, you were abruptly pulled out of your false reality by the very person you made it for. As he shook your shoulder gently, “Hey, wake up, pretty girl, we’ve got to get back on the road,” he whispered, moving some hair out of your face.
A deep blush set in at the pet name—the same pet name he had just used in your dream—coming into the front of your mind—that little voice telling you he knew but there’s no way he could know, right?
The existential crisis must have been showing on your face because Eddie was looking at you concerned. “You okay, sunshine, you look a little dazed. Nap that good?” He asked, quirking a brow.
"Yeah,” you said almost too quickly, "um, I didn’t even realize I felt asleep.”
“Oh yeah, you feel asleep on my shoulder a few minutes after you came back from the bathroom,” he shrugged.
"Well, you have a comfortable shoulder, thanks, pal,” you said, froging him in the arm, quickly getting out of your seat and speed-walking to the van.
“That was painful,” Robin said as she exited the diner behind you.
“Did I just call him pal and punch him in the arm?” You asked, your head falling on her shoulder.
"Yeah, it was pretty hard to watch,” she deadpanned. "Robin,” you whined.
“Right, sorry,” she said as she started to run a comforting hand through your hair. “What even happened to get you that flustered?”
“I kind of had a sex dream about Eddie,” you mumbled, your voice muffled by her shoulder.
“You had a sex dream about Munson, while you were napping on him,?!?” she said a bit too loudly for your taste.
“Shhh Robin”
"Right, sorry, you had a sex dream about Munson?” She repeated it in a whisper.
"Well, kind of, I was woken up before any actual sex happened, but that’s where it was leading,” you told her, finally lifting your head. “What am I going to do? I feel like a perv.”
"Okay, first of all, it’s completely natural, and second, maybe that’s your subconscious way of telling you to, you know, make a move,” Robin said, biting her thumb nail.
“You think I should make a move on him? Does he even like me?” You asked, pulling Robin's thumb away from her mouth.
“Are you kidding me? You were totally just drooling all over him in your sleep, and he didn’t even bat an eye at the guys.”
“I drooled on him.” You half asked, half whined, her head failing back into place on her shoulder.
***
“Did she just call me Pal?" Eddie asked through a dejected sigh, slumping in his seat.
"Yeah, she also drooled on you a little bit,” Dustin pointed out, poking a spot on his shoulder over the table.
“And I find that unbelievably adorable. I’m so fucked. I just got pal zoned. I think that’s worse than the friend zone,” Eddie whined, beating his head on the table.
"Oh, stop that. She didn’t mean anything by it. She just got flustered. She likes you, okay. Stop stressing and dancing around it flirtatiously and just ask her out.” Dustin told him, his eyes rolling as far back into his head as they could go.
“She said that?” Eddie’s head perked up like a puppy who had just been offered a treat.
“Not exactly, but I’m her brother, and a brother knows." Dustin shrugged, standing up. “Just go for it, man, she’s into you. I promise, just you know, maybe don’t do it in front of me because gross.”
“When did you get so wise?” Steve asked, hands on his hips, sassy as ever.
“I’ve always been wise; you deepshits just never notice,” he said, sticking his chin high as he walked off.
“No wonder his head is so big; it’s got to fit that massive ego.”
***
It’s been two hours since you stopped for dinner and 12 since you started the trip as a whole. Eddie had driven for another hour after you stopped before you made him stop and let Steve drive before he felt asleep at the wheel.
Steve and Robin were now in front. Robin passed out until Steve would shake her awake to ask for directions.
And other than the sound of Steve’s quiet humming and soft snores coming from the kids, the van was quiet.
Eddie was out cold the second his head hit the makeshift pillow of his waded-up leather jacket, stirring occasionally to find a more comfortable position.
You were in the limbo between resting and actually sleeping, not completely awake and not completely asleep, when you felt something touch your side. You turned your head, smiling sleepily at the sight in front of you. Eddie, who was already close due to the big group and limited space you had in the back of the van, had moved to lay on his side, one arm curled under his arm to replace the jacket that was now thrown over his body lazily, his other hand poking out just barely grazing your side. You could feel the coldness of his fingers through the thin material of your tank top.
You sat up frowning on the lookout for another blanket, but it seemed that every one was being occupied. After a few minutes of trying to plan in your sleepy state, you finally decided on just sharing yours with him. It wasn’t huge, but you think it could fit over both of you if you shifted a little closer.
You gently pulled the leather jacket off him, setting it aside, grabbing his hand, and moving it closer to his own body as slowly as you could, smiling proudly when you managed to do so without disturbing him.
After shifting as close as you could without actually touching the boy, you took your time situating the blanket, making sure it covered him as much as possible. You finally laid back down yourself, too tired to be anxious about the little amount of space between the two of you.
You had just closed your eyes when another touch pulled you out of your almost-sleep. This time it was more than a few fingers. Eddie was now curled into your side, arm thrown over your waist, head resting on your collarbone without even thinking you started lazily ruining a hand through his curls, making him snuggle into you further. You felt your body relax against him, starting to pull you down into sleep, finally letting it take you. You lay there with a sleepy smile on your lips, content to lay like this the rest of the night. Even if you weren’t really sure where this would leave you, when you wake up, you couldn’t find it in yourself to care. Relaxing in the heat, his body was now suppling, finally closing your eyes to let sleep take you.

a/n: well, um, it’s been a little over a month since you got a fic from me. i took a break from writing, but my mental health only got worse, so clearly it didn’t work too well. this fic was meant to be a way for me to work through some things, so beware of that. i thought maybe someone else might need it too, or might even understand, in some way. i know i don’t usually do specifics regarding reader, but this is really for me. also, the title is a reference to the song of achilles, but it seemed fitting. i hope this turned out okay. i know it’s a lot, but it’s something. <33
————
The wall behind you is starting to make your back ache. The chill you’d felt through your shirt when you’d first situated yourself against it is long gone. You pull your knees up as close as you can get them and wrap your arms around your calves.
Billy has pressed himself into the footboard of your bed. He’s staring at you and your obstinance makes you stare right back. He crosses his arms, and your gaze flickers to the way his biceps shift with the movement. He’d tease you if he weren't so determined to challenge your stubbornness with his own.
“How long?” you question, pressing your cheek into the skin of your knee and letting your eyes flutter closed.
“A week. Maybe two,” he answers.
You scoff and roll your neck so that your forehead can take the place of your cheek. “Oh, holy shit,” you say, voice muffled by your legs. “Yeah, that’s a no.”
Billy rolls his eyes, and even if you can’t see him, you can feel it. He runs a hand down his face. You have your moments, where you can be incredibly difficult, but this is something different. It’s almost like you’re frustrated in some way, and it frustrates Billy that he can’t pinpoint why.
“You sound like Harrington.” He pushes off the bed and lands a playful slap to the side of your calf before walking out of the room, hoping a bit of pacing might help him figure out what to do.
Billy has wanted to go back to California since he got to Hawkins, though now he seems to be content with a simple vacation, rather than being in a rush to move back. When he brought it up again today, telling you firmly that he is going, you thought it sounded lovely. That it’d be good for him, that maybe he’d take Max and they’d do some family bonding or something. But that’s not what he’d said.
He wants you to go with him.
And you hate the beach. With a burning, fiery passion.
Despite this, there’s a voice in the back of your head that tells you you’ll end up going anyway–just for him. But right now, the idea of going to California makes you nauseous.
Sitting in a hot car for the length of that trip, sweating your ass off, baking in the sun, being trapped on the beach for hours? What’s so fun about all of that? And then there’s the matter of a swimsuit. Billy has certainly never seen you in one, and he definitely doesn’t know that you got rid of the ones that were once in your possession.
He traipses back into the room, making you look up. It’s as if he’s somehow sensed that you were lost in thought, that you were being unkind to yourself. He doesn’t like it when you shit on his girl.
“Look,” Billy starts, leaning against the doorframe. “If you really don’t want to go, I’m not gonna force you or anything.”
He pauses, and you slide further down the wall until your back rests firmly against the mattress. You force yourself to make eye contact with him–only for a moment.
“I just thought it might be nice to have you with me. I wanted to take you home.” His mouth tips up in a grin at that last bit. He’s guilt tripping you.
“Goddamnit, William.” You slap your hands over your eyes, shielding yourself from him like he might up and turn you to stone. You’ve never fancied being a garden statue.
“I just…I don’t know, Billy. There’s a lot for me to think about.” You pull your hands back and his face is inches from yours. It makes you jump, but makes his mouth twist into a Cheshire cat grin. Contrary to the way his boots usually announce his presence, he’s partial to moving like a cat when no one else is around. “Jesus.”
He presses his palms into the bed on either side of you and sits so that his thighs bracket your own. This way you can’t run when he asks you why you’re so insistent about not going to California with him.
“You mean there’s a lot for you to overthink about.” His hands find your sides, thumbs sweeping over the soft of your belly. Your mind jumps to the pudge you know lies underneath your shirt, the very thing that prevents you from wearing the teeny bikinis Heather Holloway runs around in. Right now you can’t bear to have him touch you, and you push his hands off.
You give him an agitated look, and again that feeling, that he can’t quite pinpoint what’s going on, crawls up Billy’s abdomen and prods at his throat. “What? Like that’s not what you were doing when I came back in here?”
He goes to rest his hands on your thighs, the bare skin calling to him, skin he wants to grasp, knowing how pliant it will be, how it might move under his fingertips, but he stops himself. He thinks that you’ll just push him off again, so he settles for planting them back against the mattress, though close enough that he can feel the warmth of you–close enough that you’re still tangible.
You sigh. He mocks the sound, pitching his voice up just that little bit higher. You cover your face with your palms once more.
“Look,” Billy starts, “I’ll take care of everything. There’s really nothing for you to worry about. You know I’ve been saving for this since I got here.”
You nod behind your hands, and Billy recognizes it as a gesture you make when you’re about to cry. He swears his heart drops out of his ass.
“Hey, hey, hey–what’s going on in there?” He pulls at your wrists, a gentle grip, but more than enough to be firm. You let him move your hands away, and he sets them on your belly, but even that seems to be wrong. You’re quick to remove them, not being able to stand the squish of your own flesh.
You aren’t crying, but your eyes are a little glassy. Billy thinks whatever tears might’ve been about to spill, you’ve willed away. You inhale.
“Billy, I can’t just go to the beach.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because I don’t look like you.”
If you could manage to look at him, you’d see the way Billy’s brows meet, maybe even catch the way his breath hitches in his throat. He connects the dots, all at once. Suddenly he knows what you mean.
Last summer, when you were still just friends, you’d come and eat lunch with him on his break. But never once did you actually go swimming, always just taking off when he had to continue his shift. Billy had secretly hoped you’d stay and lounge, at least, during one of the many times you dropped Max or Dustin off. You never did.
He’s not even sure he ever saw you in something other than jeans then. Hell, you’re wearing shorts right now, in the comfort of your own home, but you don’t ever leave the house in them. Why hadn’t he seen it before? Why hadn’t the thought at least occurred to him?
He thinks about all the times you avoid mirrors, or looking at other people. How you never want to go shopping, how all of your clothes are just that little bit too big. He realizes it’s serving you a purpose. You’re trying to hide–from Hawkins, from him, from yourself.
Billy feels like he’s been punched, or maybe like someone’s poured ice water down the back of his shirt. Still he teases. He needs to.
“Well, contrary to popular belief, I'm really not that into myself. So I’m actually pretty damn grateful that you don’t look like me.”
He tracks your shaky inhale. The teasing has failed him, and he doesn’t want to see you cry.
Billy moves off of your lap in hopes that it might help pull you out of your head for a moment. “You wanna talk to me?” he ventures. You sit up, nodding. The movement allows the tears you’d been holding back to slip free, gliding down the apples of your cheeks.
Billy’s thumbs are against your skin in a moment, wiping them away. “Yeah?” He reciprocates your nod, more reassuring, supportive, than mocking. Billy holds out his hand for you to take. You bring it into your lap, tracing the many creases on his palm. It gives you something steady to focus on, grounds you enough that you can concentrate on getting your words out.
“I know it’s stupid,” you mumble, voice thick with emotion. Billy flicks his fingers upward to tickle your own, and it gets your lips to tick up just that little bit.
“It’s not stupid,” he says, tone dead serious. “What’s that shit you always tell me?” He raises his other hand, waving it around. “This is a safe space to share your feelings.” He says the words playfully, as if it might pain him, though he’s just trying to help you like you do for him. Your heart warms at the effort.
“It’s my body, Billy. I can’t just go to the beach because the beach means a swimsuit, it means people seeing me in a swimsuit, you seeing me, but I can’t wear one, and I—” You pause, drawing in a breath. Your eyes squeeze shut for just a second, another tear falling down, but you catch it before he can.
“I hate my body, okay? And I love that you want to take me with you to California, really it means so much to me, but I-I know that means tagging along with you, being out in hot weather, and I’m just going to ruin it all for you looking like this. Really you should be taking someone else. Someone who can maybe put on clothes without sobbing.”
When you finish and look up at him, Billy looks heartbroken. It immediately makes you want to take it all back. You never meant to tell him any of this.
“You sob when you have to get dressed?” he asks, almost tentatively. The way he says it tells you he’s not picking on you, but instead trying to understand. He’s picturing it, you struggling to simply get ready for the day, and it kills him. You shouldn’t have to feel that way.
“I have before, yeah. And Billy you’re hot. I know you know that. You should be with someone who’s equally as attractive. Not someone like me.”
You hiccup and release Billy’s hand. You start playing with a string on the hem of your worn-out shorts. Billy’s thumb finds your forearm, dragging up to press against the inside of your elbow. “Baby.”
You shake your head, forcing a sad smile to form on your face. “It’s alright. I told you it was silly.”
“Are you shitting me right now?” His grip tightens ever so slightly. He’s begging for you to listen to him without ever saying so. You meet his eyes, and he’s looking at you with so much concern, so much love, that you wish you hadn’t looked at all. This isn’t silly. Not to him.
“What is it about your body that you don’t like? Can you tell me that much?”
More understanding. More compassion. You can’t take it.
You bite the inside of your lip so hard that you draw blood. You press your tongue against the spot, hoping it will stop. You’re getting angry with yourself. For making this situation about you, for telling him about your stupid feelings, for thinking that you could ever make this work when clearly you’re not meant to even be in a relationship, especially not with him, and definitely not when you look like this–
“Stop. Take a deep breath, and talk to me.” Billy’s tone is unyielding. You’re working this out right now, and he’s made that decision for you. He knows if you don’t, you’ll just shove it right back under the rug and keep fighting this internal battle with yourself all while he’s right here.
You do as he said, and start again.
“I don’t like my tummy, or my hips, o-or my boobs. My arms are wrong too, and I’ve got all these rolls, and nothing is shaped right. I hate everything, and I can’t even look in the mirror anymore, and I want to go on this trip with you, really I do, but all of this is overwhelming me, and I-I’m just going to ruin it for you.”
“Look at me,” Billy says. You hadn’t even noticed you’d stopped, eyes glued to your bedsheets. You start crying again, warm tears spilling over your lashes. You can’t get them to stop, can’t get your thoughts to stop. It makes you want to press your hands to your ears, like that would help, but really it’s just you. You in your own head.
Billy takes your face in his hands. “There is nothing wrong with your body. This is just your mind fuckin’ with you. I know that every part of you is perfect, just as it is, and you don’t have to look like anyone else to be good enough.”
You shake your head and grab hold of his wrists. “See, but you can’t really say that. You don’t actually know what my body looks like because I don’t have it in me to let you see it. I know that if you did, you’d be grossed out, Billy. There’s so much fat, and pudge, and I–”
“Why are you saying that like it’s a bad thing? Because it isn’t and I don’t wanna hear you say that again, you understand?” You sniffle. He takes that as a yes.
“Baby, I know I haven’t seen shit. But I fucking swear that I’d be a goner for it. You think I mind having a little extra to squeeze on? ‘Cause I don’t.”
You’re trying so hard to believe him, but every cell, every nerve in your body is screaming in protest. He’s lying. He’s lying, he’s lying, he’s lying. But there’s a part of your brain that knows he isn’t. That he wouldn’t dare lie to you.
“My body is…it’s disappointing.” You sit up on your knees and wipe your nose. “Because I-I know what the world wants me to look like, and I don’t look like that.” You squeeze your eyes shut, and more tears slip out. He can’t stand to see you like this, and it’s killing him to know that this is what you’ve been dealing with for who knows how long.
“It’s not fair,” you cry. “It’s not fair because I don’t get to walk around with this amazing body, the kind of body that men clearly want, and I think now I want it too. I sit in my room at night and I think about how I’d love myself more if I had a different body.”
Now that the floodgates have opened, you can’t force them closed.
“Because I don’t have porn star tits, Billy. They’re sad looking, and they definitely don’t look like the chick’s on your bedroom wall, or the ones in your bedside drawer.
He lets out a scoff of a laugh. It’s not malicious, not even at all. It’s simply due to the fact that your mind, and the world around you, has led you to hating the body you were given. He laughs because he agrees with you that it isn’t fair. It isn’t fair that you’re feeling like this. But he has to make sure you recognize that you can’t compare yourself to fucking models.
“You know all of their tits are fake, right? Or strapped in somehow to get ‘em that high.”
You rub your nose, drag a hand down your throat. “Well, yeah but I’m sure there are lots of other women around here with better boobs than me. I know you like boobs, Billy. And mine are gross.”
“Yeah, that’s bullshit. They aren’t gross, and you shouldn’t talk about your girls like that.” He holds up a finger to prevent you from fussing about that comment. “I don’t care if they’re a little droopy or if they aren’t these round balloons, or if they aren’t porn star tits, or whatever it is about them you don’t like. And I know it’s only because you’ve been comparing your tits with some stranger’s, and that’s bullshit too.” You stare at Billy blankly, but he’s still not done.
“I wouldn’t care about any of those things. Because they’re your boobies, and that makes them my favorites.”
“Please don’t say boobies, Billy.” He grins and leans in until his mouth hovers above the shell of your ear.
“And I always end up thinkin’ about you anyway.” Your face starts to burn and you fight the urge to abort right then and there. “Not even Elvira can keep me from thinking about you, baby.”
Your face is burning. “What is wrong with you?”
“Oh, there’s a lot wrong with me,” he says, rubbing his nose against yours. “But there’s not a damn thing wrong with your body, and I’m gonna be right here until you think the same.” He gives you one chaste kiss and pulls back.
“But Billy, my ass is–”
“Amazing? I’ve seen it in those jeans you wear all the time. Shit is mind boggling, baby.”
“Jesus fucking christ.”
His giggles taper out, and then he’s looking at you all gently again, like you’re the most precious thing in the entire goddamn universe. “You gotta quit comparing yourself to other people, okay? Doesn’t do you any good, and I know that. This is the only body you’re gonna get, and you deserve to love on it a little.”
You run your hands down your face. “I just wish I believed that.”
Billy leans down and smacks a kiss to your knee.
“Hate seein’ you like this, you know? You’re the prettiest fucking thing I’ve ever laid eyes on. The way you’re told you should look? It’s all idealized and stereotypical bullshit, and it isn’t fair for you to look at yourself and pick every little thing apart because it doesn’t look like some chick in a porno mag or a comic book drawn by some horny, middle-aged man.”
He’s fired up now, genuinely hurting for you, and he’s talking with his hands. That gets you every time.
You might be snotty, your cheeks might feel tight from where the tears have dried, but seeing him be so passionate about making you feel better gets a little grin out of you.
Billy catches it, that itty bitty quirk of your lips, and he moves in until his face is inches from yours. It’s supposed to be intimidating.
“The fuck are you grinning about?”
Your grin turns into a full, teary smile.
“You expecting a kiss or something?” he teases, thumb dragging over your lashes, separating them where they’d clumped together with moisture.
“I was gonna give you one, actually.” Your eyes start to prickle again. “Because I don’t deserve you—”
Billy covers your mouth with his hand. “Listen, if there’s anyone who doesn’t deserve someone, it’s me—”
You do the same to him in an instant, only he smacks his lips against your palm, winking just for good measure. You roll your eyes.
Both of you remove your hands at the same time, and then you really do kiss him. A sweet press of your mouth that tells him…everything.
You pull away, and he’s still looking at you like you hung the fucking stars.
“I’m sorry for keeping all of this in, Billy. It’s so suffocating sometimes, and I get so angry with myself for looking like this. I just imagine that I’d be so much happier with someone else’s body.”
“But if you had someone else’s body, you wouldn’t be you anymore. You wouldn’t be my girl.”
You nod, trying not to let the voices win. Trying not to think about how you look in the mirror versus how you wish you looked. How if you had different features it might be better.
“Just can’t help thinkin’ you should be with someone that looks nicer than I do.”
“But I want you, okay? I love you exactly the way that you are.”
“Okay,” you respond, voice shaky.
“Can I hug you?” Billy asks.
“Yeah. Yeah.”
Billy pulls you into his arms, squeezing you tightly against him. He has this way of getting you out of your head, of making you feel like the two of you are all that matter.
You’ve both risen up onto your knees, the mattress dipping around you. Billy’s hands are rubbing all over your back.
He leans his head back a little, making sure he catches your attention before he dips his chin down to gesture at where the both of your chests meet.
“They don’t feel gross to me.”
You heave a sigh, pulling away from him completely, and trying to ignore how proud he looks of himself.
“We’re gonna keep workin’ on this, alright? I’m not letting you hate on yourself so much anymore.”
“Yes, sir.”
Billy rolls his eyes, but you give him a hopeful, yet sad, smile, all the confirmation he’s looking for. That you’ll try.
“So what else about the beach is it that you’re worried about? I’ll buy you a fucking umbrella, I swear. And if you go, I’ll let you drive.”
Your eyes widen, and Billy knows he’s just won you over. He knows that you have a soft spot for his car, and he’ll do anything to keep you happy.
————
“You aren’t upset that you’re not going?”
“No, not really. I mean, I like it there, but I’ve never had the same attachment to it as Billy has.”
Max slings another swimsuit over her arm. You decided that you really wanted to try and find one you might be comfortable in. Billy said you didn’t have to swim, even if he didn’t want you to overheat, but you’re determined to find something. And Max had happily offered to help you while Billy worked on finding you both a place to stay.
Every once in a while, Max will hold one up to you, as if contemplating the color, and then decide she wants you to try it on without asking, knowing you’ll argue with her.
“Do you miss it?”
She shrugs her shoulders, nodding towards the dressing rooms and leading the way. She’s holding substantially more swimsuits than you are, and you know you’ll be trying on every single one.
“Sometimes? I miss my family. And I think even for Billy it’s mostly about his mom. California was the last place he was sort of…happy. But I like Hawkins, you know? And even if he likes it better now too, I’ve never been as determined to go back as he is.”
You pause outside the dressing room, clutching the slippery fabric harder than necessary. “I understand. Anything you want me to bring back for you?”
Max opens the door for you and starts hanging up suits on the hooks provided. She grins. “I’ll never say no to a prize. Now stop stalling, and get in here.”
You do as she says, and make her choose which one to try first, just to make it easier on yourself.
Max closes her eyes while you change, but when she hears the shuffling stop and a sniffling replaces it, she moves her hands.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” She stands up next to you.
You’re crying, but you’re trying so, so hard not to let the tears slip out. “I’m sorry,” you say, pressing the heels of your hands against your eyes. “I just haven’t seen my body like this in a long time, and I feel like I look so ugly.”
She grabs your wrists and gently pulls them away from your face.
“You don’t look ugly. You look great.”
Max turns you so that you’re facing the mirror again. Your hands fly to your stomach, and you start to poke at it. She watches you pull at the skin of your hips, trying to see what it’d look like if there was less of it.
“Don’t do that,” she scolds you. You let your hands fall to your sides, and she catches the stray tear before it can slide down your cheek. She’s being much too nice to you.
“You don’t think that’s gross?” you question, criticizing your body in the mirror, comparing it to the stockpile of other bodies you’ve got in your brain.
Max puts her hands on her hips. “No, I don’t think it’s gross. I think you look hot.”
You scoff, pulling at one of the straps. It’s a one- piece, in a color you really like, because you’re too scared to show your tummy right now. There’s a voice in the back of your head that says it looks just fine, but you ignore it.
“You can’t really think that, Max.”
“Oh, but I can, and I do. So, you’re just gonna have to live with that. And Billy told me about your problems with your body—he’s got a big mouth, you know that? But I wanted to tell you that my hips look like that too. It’s normal.”
She’s standing like Steve, determined to have you believe her. Determined to be there for you.
“I think you should get this one,” she continues. “I know you like it.”
“I don’t know, Max.”
“Then try on a few more, okay? Don’t let your thoughts stop you from picking out something you like. As long as it’s comfortable, that’s all that matters. You have a great body, and you deserve to go to the beach with your boyfriend and wear a swimsuit.”
She flops down on the bench, an encouraging smile gracing her face when she reaches up and shoves another bathing suit into your hands.
Max Mayfield is very convincing when she wants to be. Not only do you keep the tears at bay for the rest of the trip, you also end up getting the first one, as well as one she slipped in your basket at the last second because it “Looked too kickass not to buy.”
————
“You make a very pretty passenger princess, you know.”
Billy rolls his eyes, and even if you can’t exactly see the gesture with your own glued to the road, you feel the disturbance. He smacks his hand against your bare thigh and leaves it there, even if it is too hot for skin-to-skin contact. You know if it weren’t for the air conditioning blasting your face, you might’ve shoved him out of the car.
“Turn up here, you little shit.”
You’ve made it off of all the main roads, now driving through beach town after beach town. Billy can’t even complain about your driving because well…you’re a good driver. He watches you eye the swankier resorts, the ones with pools and valet parking. He hopes you’ll be happy with the little house he found. It’s not too far from where he grew up, and he’d been pleased about being somewhat familiar with the area.
The sound of gravel under the tires makes you feel safe. Billy directs you towards your destination, and when you park the car, you feel like you might cry.
The house is small, sure, but it’s welcoming. The neighborhood isn’t suffocatingly full, either. Sure, there are other homes, some larger than others with their big balconies and wrap-around porches, but it feels…nice.
You turn off the engine and get out. Billy walks around the other side of the car and wraps his arms around your waist. “You wanna go look around? I’ll come back and get our shit in a minute.”
You spin around and smack a kiss to his forehead. If his cheeks weren’t already red from the heat, he knows they would be simply from your affection. You nod, and Billy takes your hand, leading up the little set of stairs to the door.
He bends over. “The lady on the phone said the key was under the mat.” He comes back up with the metal in hand.
“The lady on the phone?” you wonder.
Billy pushes the door open. “Yeah, it’s like an old ass couple renting this place out. She practically told me her whole life story the other day.” You grin and hook your fingers in his belt loops, letting him pull you around inside the house.
It really is cozy. One bedroom, two and a half bathrooms. Comfy little barstools and a sweet couch. The part you’re really excited about is the porch. Excited enough that you separate from Billy and pull the sliding glass doors open to step outside.
You can see the beach. It might take a little bit to walk down there, but you can see it. Which means you can watch the sunset.
“You like it?” Billy leans against the doorframe behind you. You can hear the smile in his voice.
“I really do.”
He pulls you in for a kiss then, lips warm and a little chapped against yours.
“So, I have this plan.” You raise an eyebrow, clearly a little frightened by that idea. He grins, and kisses you again, trying to shut you up, you know. “There’s a board shop not far from here that closes in…” He pauses, looking at his watch. “An hour and a half. I was gonna rent one so that I can surf tomorrow. Do you wanna go with me or stay here?”
You look over at the bench tucked into the corner of the porch. The cushion looks very comfortable, and you did bring a book. He knows what you’re doing to say before you even say it.
“I think I’ll stay here.”
“That’s cool, baby. I can pick up dinner?” He squeezes at your hips.
“That would be nice.”
You reach around and slip your hands into his back pockets. He won’t say it, but you seem a little lighter now that you’re here. Like you aren’t so panicked about the prospect of vacation, but rather content to be there with him. It’s as if you know he’s going to take real good care of you–which he is.
“That way you can explore, right?” he teases. You’re like a cat that way. You have to check everything out first before you really settle down.
“Right.” You press a kiss to the tip of his nose, and he pats around on your ass, looking for his keys. When he secures them, he gives it a firm smack, just while he can get away with it, and then he’s moving away from you.
But he’s right. You do feel a little more content. Maybe even comfortable.
————
“Be fucking still, William.”
“It’s cold,” he bites back.
You’re rubbing sunscreen all over his back, and even if you’ve already covered the rest of him in it, and helped him tie his hair up into a sweet little bun, he’s destined to be the whiniest man in all of existence. You know for a fact that it isn’t that cold, considering he’d put it on you minutes before.
“There.” You push your hand into the skin of his neck, making sure you’ve got every spot. You refuse to listen to him fuss about a sunburn. “I’m all done.”
Billy turns around to face you, placing his sunglasses up on the top of his head. “Ready to get going then?”
“If by ready to watch you eat shit, then yes.”
Billy aligns his face with yours, locking eyes and everything. “I’m not gonna eat shit.”
“Eh,” you shrug, slinging your bag over your shoulder. “I bet you will.”
He kisses your shoulder over the t-shirt you’re wearing. He still hasn’t seen the swimsuit you’ve put on, and you’re trying to postpone it for as long as possible. It’s a miracle you didn’t cry getting it on, but you tried to remember what Max had said, how sweet Billy had been when you’d come clean about your insecurities. It is comfortable, at least. You just feel all sorts of wrong wearing it. But you can’t let that ruin this whole trip. It’s not worth it.
“Come on, grumpy pants. Get a move on.”
When you finally make it to the beach, you’re so hot and sticky you could beat the shit out of him right then and there. There’s no way this is actually enjoyable for people. Definitely not in this heat.
Billy has left to retrieve an umbrella and a chair for you, insisting he can just sit on a towel. By the time he gets back, you’re full on pouting. It makes him laugh. You cross your arms and watch him work the umbrella into the sand.
He finishes and reaches a hand out to pull you up from where you’d plopped on top of the towel bag. “It’s so hot,” you whine, faking tears.
He just keeps laughing. “I know. That’s why you’re gonna come in the water with me, and then you’ll cool off and you can come sit here and watch me eat shit.”
He pulls his shirt off over his head. Your eyes wander all over his torso, soaking in every inch of skin, every freckle and scar. “I thought you weren’t gonna eat shit,” you argue, leaning in to kiss the raised patch on his chest.
You wish you could be as confident about your body as he is sometimes. Things got really hard for Billy after Starcourt, but at some point something just snapped, and he decided he should show off the messy scars. He takes care of them as best as he can, much better care than he ever thought he would, and they are looking better.
You even wish that you could love on your own the way you do his. But that’s just not the case.
“Yeah, well I probably will eat shit, so.” He gestures towards your shirt. “You gonna swim in that?” His eyes drop to your bare thighs. No one should be allowed to look that sweet.
“Um…no.” You tentatively grab the hem of your shirt and pull it off quickly, trying to rip off the bandaid. When you’re done, Billy has to remember to keep his mouth closed, his jaw having legitimately dropped.
“Holy shit. This is the body you’ve been so mean to?”
“If you don’t stop, I’m gonna put the shirt back on.”
He steps closer to you. He’s gawking. “No! Please don’t. You look hot, baby.”
You’re not sure anyone has ever called you hot before. Certainly not whilst in an item of clothing that doesn’t leave much to the imagination, even if you are pretty damn covered. It’s a little bit higher cut on the sides than you’re used to, but it holds everything in well. You feel exposed. If you think about it for too long you’ll probably just throw up.
You put your hands over your belly and tilt your head, smushing your cheek into your shoulder. “Billy,” you fuss.
He removes your hands and instead takes them in him, pulling you down the beach with him. When you get to the water, Billy watches you wade out until it’s knee deep, trying to keep his eyes away from your ass.
He thinks you look fucking radiant like this. And he’s never actually even said that word. You’re looking down, probably for sand dollars or little fish. Billy takes this opportunity to look at your body. Not in a judgemental way by any means, but simply because he’s never gotten to see it like this. You’re being vulnerable with him, and that means more than anything else could.
Billy wades out a little further than you and disappears beneath the waves for just a moment. When he emerges you think this is what people must have thought about Achilles. He is breathtakingly gorgeous, and it simply isn’t fair. You can’t believe that you have him.
Billy walks you back to your umbrella and gets you nice and shielded from the sun before he heads back out to attempt surfing. He might’ve been messing with you, but it has been a few years, and he really might get his ass handed to him by the ocean.
You’re eating a popsicle when he finally catches a wave, after having tried and failed for a little while. It’s impressive to see him up there like that, especially when you can’t even comprehend how he does it.
You might hate the heat, and you might hate the fact that there’s sand up your ass, but you think you could sit here and watch Billy surf for hours with no complaint. It’s like he’s in his element, way more than when he played basketball. You can tell that he knows what he’s doing, that he sort of listens to the water and obeys.
You allow yourself to imagine a future like this. One where maybe you can come back during the summers, just the two of you or maybe with Max and a friend of hers. You could never give up snow, so it couldn’t be permanent, but you could do it for Billy.
You could do anything if it meant getting to see him so happy. If it meant getting to feel so loved and so safe. It is your greatest honor to be loved by Billy Hargrove, a boy that everyone thought was incapable of loving.
————
“Motherfucker.”
Billy’s voice echoes in the bathroom, reaching you where you lay in the bed. You can’t see him from where you are.
It’s been a few days, and it’s gotten easier to put on that swimsuit. To look at yourself in the mirror. You’ve done a lot of thinking, a lot of listening. You might even say you’ve learned from Billy during this trip. Not that you’d boost his ego by telling him so.
He rushes out of the bathroom and flops down in front of you, holding his hand aloft.  “Baby, I need help. I got a splinter from your goddamn umbrella. I can’t get it out.”
“What do you say, Hargrove?” You sit up, taking the tweezers from him with an evil grin on your face.
“Pretty please?”
“That’s it.”
The second you get your eyes on the splinter, you know he just wanted attention from you. It’s big, and he could’ve just pulled it out with his fingernails. But you’re touched he wanted your help. That says a lot more than he probably realizes.
You grip the edge of the teeny wood piece and gently pull it out from under his skin. You place it in the palm of his hand. “Ta-da.”
He snorts, and you kiss the tip of his finger. “All better now?”
“Yep.”
He slips into bed with you soon after, and you can’t help but sit up on your knees, just so you can get a good look at him.
The freckles under his eyes have become loads more prominent, and they spread over his shoulders and collarbones like someone’s dumped glitter all over him.
He lets you look at him, too, just admiring you in the moment. You look sleepy, beat from being out all day, from driving around to see where Billy grew up, but he thinks you’ve never looked prettier. He tells you so and you use his hand to shield your face.
It makes Billy laugh, and he pushes your head gently, knowing you’ll go all dramatic and fall back, and when you do you end up in his lap.
You curl up like a cat, wrapping your arms around him so you can rest your head on his tummy and splay your fingers out over his warm back. You change positions quickly though, propping your chin up with your hands.
“Thank you for coming with me,” Billy says, swiping a thumb over the apple of your cheek. It’s a light enough touch that it tickles.
“Don’t have to thank me. I wanted to.”
He exhales. “I know, but I also know it’s been hard for you, being in your head all the time.”
“It’s okay. You’re helping.”
He smirks. “Oh yeah?”
“Mhm.” You scoot up and tuck yourself into his side. You might not even need a blanket with all the heat he radiates. “Much too good to me,” you mutter, kissing his chest.
“You deserve it.”
He feels you grin against his skin, bashful as ever no matter how long you’ve known each other.
Billy moves onto his side and entangles himself with you, holding you tight to his chest.
You reciprocate the hold, squeezing a little to tell him you love him. “Thank you for bringing me home. I can see how happy you are here.”
“I’d be happy anywhere as long as you were there too.”
You snort. “That’s so cheesy.”
“It’s true, though.”
“I know it is.” You’re silent for a minute before you remember. “We gotta get Max a prize before we leave.”
“Oh yeah, bring the little shit a gift.”
“She deserves a prize for having helped me pick out a bathing suit.”
Billy contemplates your statement. “Hm. Yeah, that works. So what do I get then, huh?”
“My eternal love.”
“Oh. I was hoping you’d like, take me to dinner or something.”
“Talk about being a little shit,” you mumble, sleep taking over. For the first time, you aren’t worried about going to the beach tomorrow. You aren’t worried about what squish Billy might be able to feel, holding you like this. You feel comfortable. Maybe you’re not completely in love with yourself, but with Billy around, you might get there one day. For now, that’s enough. It’s more than enough.
“Eternal love it is then.”

No matter how many houses you live in, sometimes you still end up without a home. Four walls and a roof doesn't automatically qualify. There's security. Comfort. Belonging. Love. All things that were absent in every Hargrove household. From California, to Hawkins, or fucking Timbuktu. If Neil was there, it wasn't a home. It was a nightmare.
Billy stuffed handfuls of essential items into the pockets of his denim jacket. Car keys, condom, sunglasses, box of cigarettes- where was that damn lighter? He felt around his jeans and even flipped over the pillow on his bed. No lighter in sight. Shit. At this rate, he won't make it out before Neil gets home. When his father wasn't out with Max's mother, he kept a predictable schedule. One Billy grew accustomed to maneuvering around, for minimal contact.
Like clockwork, the lock on the front door clicked and Neil entered the house. Even from upstairs, Billy could hear him grumble and slam his coat and keys down. Mood already soured. Great. "Billy!" He called out, voice echoing throughout the house. Billy actually contemplated how quiet he could be sneaking out the window, but there was no time. After just five seconds of not replying, Neil stomped his way up the stairs. Making a beeline for Billy's room till he stood in the doorway. "So what, are you deaf or just dumb?"
Billy's whole body went stiff, turning to face his father. Although the man constantly demanded eye contact (purely for intimidation), Billy never looked at him so much as through him. He mumbled. "I didn't hear you come in."
"Bullshit, but whatever. Your sister-" Neil purposely emphasized, just itching to get a rise out of him. "-isn't home. It's past curfew."
Knowing Max, she was probably running around with those little nerd kids from her school. Or you, the only other girl his age that caught the redhead's interest. She followed you around like you were the coolest thing. He found it kind of cute, in a pathetic way. Yeah…that's what it was. Not that he'd ever mention it.
"You know the Jane kid she has sleepovers with. Call her dad. I was already on my way out." Finally spotting his lighter peeking out from underneath one of his folded shirts, he leans over and plucks it from its hiding spot. Maybe if he walked while he spoke, Neil wouldn't stop him. So he took one step toward the open bedroom door. Toward Neil. Bad move.
Neil rushed him, grabbing him by the collar of his jacket and forcing him up against the wall. The force of Billy's back hitting the surface knocked over one of his posters. "What? You finally gonna make a move, pussy?!" He released Billy's jacket with a shove, straightening his posture to make himself bigger. To make Billy small in his presence. "Huh?! Come on, then! THROW A PUNCH!"
It was a nice thought. Finally having enough of the shit and smashing his fist right into Neil's face. Again, and again, and again, until his tormentor was unrecognizable. Until he could no longer see the traces of himself in that man's face. But it was a thought that stayed locked away. Instead, Billy wilted. Standing there frozen and waiting. Bracing.
Neil scoffed, standing back as if he were going to leave. That would've been too easy. In this house of horrors, Billy never got off easy.
○ ▪︎ – – 《 ◇ 》 – – ▪︎ ○
The atmosphere at your house brought back memories of warmth and nostalgia. Homemade cookies cooling in the kitchen, fresh squeezed lemonade in the fridge, and laughter so loud it drowned out the television. Truth be told, nobody was paying attention to it anyway. You, Max, and Eleven sat in a circle on your carpeted living room floor. Magazines and comics spread out, along with whatever makeup you could find in your limited collection. You didn't wear much normally, but sometimes you liked to play in it. Try different looks. Tonight the girls requested makeovers, so you flipped through your magazines for styles that might inspire something. At least you were, until you heard a firm knock at the door.
"I'll be back. Keep looking!" You said, standing up from your criss-cross-applesauce position. Your house was pretty spacious, so it took a bit for you to reach the door and open it. The last person you expected to see was Billy 'Fuck Me' Eyes Hargrove. You called him that because that's what he often gave you, whenever you met eyes with him during your time together at school. 'Fuck me' eyes. Those cold blues would undress you from across a crowded room like no one else was there. Like no one else was worth his attention. Nothing ever came of it. He never asked you out, or even just started a conversation. Perhaps you were just eye candy. You both graduated before either of you could figure it out.
"Hey, Y/n." The infamous blue eyes were now covered by an oddly large pair of sunglasses. More odd than that was the fact that it was dark outside. Why was he wearing sunglasses at night? He cleared his throat, momentarily covering his mouth with a clenched fist. The knuckles on his hand were red and raw, looking like they might bleed. Billy quickly realized his mistake and pulled his hand down to tuck them into his jacket pocket. The attention now drawn to his lips, and the trace of blood smeared from a fresh cut on the bottom one. "Your mother never told you it's impolite to stare?"
Caught red-handed, you immediately averted your gaze. "Sorry…" Yeah. Not how you expected your first conversation with him to go. "How uh- Did you need something?"
It wasn't the way he wanted to introduce himself either. Bitterness got the better of him before he could think of a better approach. "Yea, actually. Is Max here?" He winced a little, pulling the corners of his mouth up into a sultry smile. "If not, I could just take your number. Y'know.. just in case." Yikes. He was off his game tonight and he knew it. At this point he was better off shutting up and letting his physical charm handle the rest. Strong and silent. Heavy on the silent. His wounded pride had him questioning the 'strong'.
You looked over your shoulder and into the house, tilting till you could see the two girls chatting where you left them. "She's here. Me, her and El were havin' a girls day."
Billy had the audacity to snort. "Girls day?" He mocked, struggling not to actually chuckle. It already hurts to smile. "How cute." If television and movies held any accuracy, all he could picture was you three painting nails and braiding each other's hair. Laid out on your stomach, feet kicking while you talked about whatever stale Hawkins boy caught your attention.
"Yes. Girls day." Your eyes rolled, but you took no actual offense to his teasing. Concern still lingering over the cut on his lip, and the beginnings of a bruise on his cheek. Oh shit. "Is- Is she supposed to be home? She told me her mom said it was okay-"
"Well, nobody told my dad that. It's past her curfew. I gotta take the brat back home."
The sharp tone in his voice made it seem more urgent than he was letting on. Guess she must be in trouble. You opened the door wider, standing back so he could step inside. "Come in, I'll go get her." Without even waiting to see if he followed, you made your way back into the living room. Max met you halfway, probably hearing her brother's voice from down the hallway.
Usually Max would scowl at him, or force herself to appear neutral and aloof. The unexpected appearance must've really caught her off-guard. Her eyes widened looking up at him. Was it fear? Neil never laid a hand on her, but he still frightened her. Sometimes he was even a bit too nice. The implications of that thought made Billy want to puke and never take her back there.
"Max, you mind if I talk to Billy alone for a sec?"
The redhead shrugged. "Go ahead, take 'im." Practically throwing you in his direction.
His boots shuffled down the short hallway, past family photos and your framed high school diploma. The scent of chocolate chip made his mouth water the moment you both entered the kitchen. His eyes zeroed in on the tray of cookies, staring like he hadn't eaten in days. You caught him, picking the tray up and holding it out to him with a smile. "They should be cool by now."
Billy hesitated at first, then slowly reached out and took a cookie. They were still warm in the middle. The melted chocolate pulling apart as he bit into it. He almost came in his pants. The mmmh that vibrated through him was borderline pornographic. "Fuck, you made these?"
Your cheeks flushed. People enjoyed your baking, sure, but they never enjoyed it like that. It had you ready to bake him all the cookies he could ever want. "I do most of the cooking and baking here. My parents work a lot. Plus, it's just fun to me." He made a happy noise through his chewing, another cookie already pinched between his fingers. Your eyes drew back to his lips. Plump, moving as he chewed. His tongue occasionally sticking out to lick away a crumb. Even the way his adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed seemed to draw your attention. For some reason it made the back of your neck sweat. "Y'know… You and Max don't have to leave."
He finished swallowing the mouthful he had, licking over his teeth before he replied. "Sorry doll, but we do. I uh… I can't go back home unless I bring her."
You really really didn't want to pry, but the whole situation made you feel uneasy. Like the two of them going home right then and there just didn't seem safe. So you sat the tray down on the counter beside him and stood a little closer. You wanted to talk low enough so the girls wouldn't hear. "Max told me your dad isn't exactly a nice dude. She wouldn't go into detail, but I can tell that there's more." You raised your hand up toward his face, aiming to cup his cheek where the bruise was. Surprisingly, he let you. But he was statue stiff. Your thumb ghosted over the puffy discolored skin. It was hot to the touch. Very recent. "Did he…?"
Maybe it was the sweets. Or the concerned/comforting gesture. Due to all the people he slept with, Billy never really considered himself touch starved. Turns out, he was. He hadn't been touched like this since his mother was around. Soft, and caring. Tending to his wounds both inside and out. Initially he wanted to back away or rip your hand away from his face, but he was tired. Exhausted, and this simple gesture cooled the heat of his rage and anxiety. He didn't confirm nor deny what you asked. You didn't ask again.
He just lets you care for him. Stood there while you slid his sunglasses off and examined the bleeding scratch under his eye, and the swelling there too. Kept his eyes closed as you walked off and came back with a first aid kit. Cleaning and putting bandaids wherever they were needed. Even holding a bag of frozen peas, wrapped in paper towel, up to his face. Only then did he finally open his eyes again and look at you. Moisture still clinging to his eyelashes. They were such a beautiful sight, those eyes. This was the closest you had ever seen them.
"Look, if you're already kicked out of the house, then what's the harm in staying out longer? If you stay here with Max, then technically you are keeping an eye on her." You shifted the frozen peas, making sure the coldest area stayed against his skin. "Besides. We're a bunch of young ladies in this house all alone. My parents are staying out tonight. Maybe I'd feel safer with you here." You were half-joking. Your parents had a gun safe that you knew the combination to, and you weren't exactly a bad shot. Still, the idea of Billy being there to protect you made you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Not that he'd really give a damn. He barely knew you.
"Okay."
A sigh left his lips as he reached for yet another cookie. "You got a point. I'm just- I don't wanna deal with him tonight. Don't wanna deal with Max's attitude. And like you said…" He grinned as he took a bite. "...Can't leave you here defenseless, now can I?"
So he stayed. Max was absolutely floored, and El clung protectively close to her. Even when you reassured them everything was cool and Billy seated himself on the big recliner. His boots were officially removed and sat by the front door. He was here to stay.
The activities carried on as usual. Max and El settled on some makeup looks they wanted to try, so you opened everything up and started experimenting. Billy just silently observed. You were currently brushing blue eyeshadow across El's eyelids. It matched her blue shirt and black suspenders perfectly. Max sat and watched, shifting impatiently on her knees. That's when an idea popped into your head. "Hey Billy."
"Hm?" He was fully expecting to just be a part of the background. Out of the way until it was time to leave.
"Can you help Max out with this? I kinda got my hands full with El right now." You thrust an eyeliner pencil in his direction.
Billy gave you a look that said 'you have GOT to be kidding me', but you kept holding the eyeliner out toward him. He opened his mouth to protest, looking for some sarcastic remark. Until he looked at Max. The way the excitement in her eyes started to fade. That was his fault, and you weren't going to let it go. So he took the pencil and turned to his stepsister. "Sure."
She was hesitant to face him at first, let alone have him get up in her face. It took a little encouraging nudge from you before she settled herself in front of the recliner Billy sat on. He leaned forward, squinting as he started lining her eye. If there's one thing he took pride in, it was being exceptional at multiple things. A man of many talents. Even a bit (more than a bit) competitive. So he was dead set on making this come out right. "Stay still if you don't want me to poke your damn eye out." To his surprise, Max listened. Stilling and trying her best not to blink too much.
"Have you… done this before?" Max asked. Nervousness clear in her voice.
"No." He spoke softly, the gravel in his voice sounding more soothing than harsh. "I just- used to watch my mom do this a lot." He had her chin in his hand, moving it to keep her face where he wanted it. A little rougher than he meant to be, but Max wasn't phased. She had actually started to relax a bit. So he did the same.
You and him finished up around the same time and turned the girls around for a big reveal. Son of a bitch. His eyeliner work actually was better than yours. Even El seemed to agree as she nodded her head with a smirk. "Bitchin'." Max beamed, flipping her hair out like she was posing for photos. You looked up at Billy and noticed a little smile forming on his face as well.
The next activity you had planned was something you and the girls had thought up while you were all at the mall. It seemed like a fun game to play while the other boys weren't around. Fuck, Marry, Kill. Well, to be kid-appropriate you changed it to Kiss, Marry, Kill. Read about it in some teen-girl magazine. You didn't notice when Billy had joined you all in the carpet sitting circle, but there he was. Sporting an eyeliner makeover that Max insisted on giving him. Her technique definitely needed work.
"Alright, you first El. Kiss, Marry, Kill." A bowl of popcorn rested between your legs, and you picked out of it. Playfully tossing a kernel at Billy. He caught it in his mouth, giving you a wink as he chewed. You'd be lying if you said it didn't give you butterflies.
El furrowed her brows, tapping the side of her face with her index finger. "I would… Kiss Dustin, Marry Mike, Kill… Papa."
"Who is-" You held your hand up, cutting Billy's question short with a mouthed 'I'll tell you later'.
Max hummed, rocking back and forth. "Kiss Lucas, Marry Will, Kill Mike." She shot a mischievous look towards El, at the mention of killing her boyfriend. The two of them laughed and play-wrestled with each other.
"Marry Will?" You chuckled, since Max and him probably spoke the least out of the entire friend group. She shrugged. "Well, we had to choose from people we actually know. Or I'd be marrying Ralph Macchio."
Even Billy spared a chuckle for that. "We have got to work on your taste, kid."
Max's head turned in his direction, whipping her hair over her shoulder. "What's wrong with Ralph Macchio?!"
He held his hands up in mock defense. "Nothing, nothing. Honestly, I always thought you'd swing the other way."
You rained down popcorn kernels in his direction. Throwing them with as much force as the fluffy puffed substance could withstand. "Billy!" The girls joined in, throwing popcorn at him as he smirked and repeated. "I'm just sayin'."
10 minutes of cleaning later, it was now your turn. "Alright, Kiss Marry Kill. Uhhh… Kiss Billy, Marry Eddie, Kill Steve." Max's jaw dropped, which you assumed was over the choice to kill Steve. "What? Steve owes me twenty bucks."
"What about you, Billy?" El spoke up, drawing everyone's attention.
Billy shifted, running his fingers through his blonde curls. "Uh.. Kiss Nancy, Marry Y/n, Kill Steve."
"What is it with you guys and Steve?" Max asked, not really expecting a response as she stood and made her way to the bathroom.
"You heard Y/n. He owes my wife twenty dollars. Gotta defend her honor." He pointed his response mostly toward you. Staring you down with those gorgeous eyes.
The next hour flew by like it was nothing. Possibly because you couldn't pull yourself out of your thoughts. You hadn't thought about Billy this much when you were going to school together. Tonight you just couldn't stop. Picturing those eyes. Those lips. His hands. The sinful amount of chest peeking out from his half-unbuttoned red shirt. The way his jeans hugged his ass. Get a hold of yourself, woman!
The two young girls were snoozing, huddled together under a blanket on the couch. A Nightmare on Elm Street playing on the television. Perfect time to get some cleaning in before going to sleep yourself, so you quietly made your escape into the kitchen. Trying not to disturb anyone and letting Billy watch the movie in peace. Instead he chose to follow you.
The two of you stood in a comfortable silence for a moment. He just leaned against the counter watching you wash the dishes. "So… you're gonna marry Eddie?" He teased, scooting closer to you. "Yeah, I guess I'm the kinda guy to get 'kissed' but not married."
You didn't look up from the dishes when you replied. "Well, it's against the rules to pick the same person for more than one answer. Otherwise I would've done that."
"Oh." Billy almost sounded offended. "So he gets the ring AND my kiss."
"Nooo, stupid. You… You'd get both."
No way in hell you just said that. So openly?! You quickly rinsed off the last dish, cheeks and ears burning. With a small pile of dried plates in your hands, you tried to rush past him. Something stops you in your tracks. He blocks your path, putting his arm out in front of you. "I think I want that kiss now."
Every scenario you used to dream up back in high school couldn't live up to this. Your imagination didn't add in the smell of cigarettes and cologne. The way the muscles in his arm flexed as he leaned against the cabinet. Lowering his face to meet yours. He let you meet him the rest of the way, careful not to irritate the cut on his lip. It was sugary sweet, like the cookie taste that lingered there. Uncharacteristically chaste for someone with Billy's reputation. The thought of having him ravish you was something you held onto for another time. You could tell he was holding back from the way he clenched his hand around the edge of the counter. Like he was fighting the urge to put his hands all over you.
For now, this was perfect. When the kiss finally ended, he gave you that sexy grin. "Now about that ring."
"How about you take me on a date first."
"Friday night." Billy plucked the pile of dishes out of your hands and walked away to put them where they belonged. Opening cabinets until he found the right one while you stood there. Mesmerized. Tonight was expected to be just a cute little distraction. A short reprieve before he had to go back to Neil. Now there were plans to meet up again. You couldn't help but smile to yourself.
If he plays his cards right, maybe somewhere way down the line… he could have that ring.

max x werewolf reader. angst then fluff
Every part of you
(Max Mayfield x fem! werewolf! reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: It's the full moon, and you completely forgot. Being a werewolf, that announces nothing good, and your secret might not be one for so long.. Part 1 || Part 2 Warnings: angst (?) (English isn't my first language, I'm sorry if there are mistakes or if something doesn't make sense TvT)
You were fucked. You forgot it was tonight. You had to be quick. To run as fast as you could. Your lungs were burning. Your legs were getting weak. You didn't care. You had to make it there in time.
He was waiting for you. He seemed angry. Worried maybe. You didn't know, nor did you care.
You rushed into the cabin, stopping only to sit on the metallic chair in the middle of the room, out of breath.
"Where were you? You're almost late Y/n!" he said, tying you to the chair with big chains.
"I.. I'm sorry... I.. I know..."
He then grabbed a muzzle, to prevent you from making any noises that could draw attention to you, and so protecting innocent people.
He quickly made sure you couldn't escape, before exiting the cabin and closing the door, telling you he'd came back the next day.
You started to feel dizzy, ears buzzing, while your body started to hurt. Your vision was blurred, you could barely think anymore.
You felt the chains sinking into your skin as your transformation began, and everything turned black.
<><><><> ♡ <><><><>
The next morning, a worried Max was knocking at El's door.
"Have you seen Y/n?" she asked immediately after the brunette opened the door "I heard her sneaking out last night, I thought she would be back quickly, but she wasn't here when I woke up!"
Without letting El say a word, Max entered the house, just to stop as she saw you sitting on a chair, wrists red and marked by what seemed chains, with Hopper by your side, trying to bandage you.
"Y/n..? What happened? Are you okay?"
She rushed toward you, concern visible in her eyes.
"I-it's nothing I-I'm fine Max.."
She could see you weren't. You looked so tired. Like you fought all night long. Which wasn't so far from the truth actually.
"No, you're not fine! Look at you..! You know you can tell me everything right? Do you have problems? I can help you get through it, just talk to me.."
"I-" you glanced at Hopper, not knowing what to answer.
He nodded slightly, finishing what he was doing.
"Can we... can we go outside..?" you said, standing up
"Is it that bad?"
You didn't answered, and grabbed your girlfriend's hand, leading her outside nervously.
"Y/n-"
"Max. It's not what you think.. it's just- I-I don't even know how to say it.."
You took a deep breath, shaking slightly in anticipation of her reaction.
"I- I'm not like you.."
"What do you mean?"
She seemed confused, which was understandable.
"I'mawerewolf"
"What?"
"I'm a werewolf..."
"What...?"
"..."
You didn't know what to say. You felt bad, not having told her.
"So.. you're a werewolf..? The kind that transforms and go nuts and kills everything they meet?"
"No it's not-"
"You are a werewolf and you didn't tell me?"
The little shake in her voice wasn't concern anymore. It was anger.
"I-"
"We slept in the same bed! We spend night out together! You could've killed me, Y/n! Do you even realize you put everyone in danger?!"
"Max-"
You tried to grab her hand, but she jumped away from you.
"Don't touch me."
Your heart dropped at her words, eyes full of tears.
"I can't believe you lied to me."
"I didn't lie to you..! I.. I didn't know how to tell you..! But I love you! I would never hurt you Max! I can control-"
"Why where you here then? Getting bandaged by Hopper? Didn't your transformation went wrong?!"
"... It was the full moon..! It's the only day I can't control it! Max please I swear-"
"Enough! I don't want to hear more of that."
She turned around, and started to walk away.
"Max wait let me-"
"I don't want to talk to you why don't you understand that?!"
She had never raised her voice at you before, not like that. She hated you. You felt it. You felt your heart break into million pieces. You felt tears running down your cheeks.
You didn't try to stop her again, just watching her going away from you.
You heard someone coming in your direction, but you weren't in a talkative mood, so you ran away, eyes shut, tears blurring your vision.
You wanted to be alone. Alone with your pain.
You stopped running after you were sure to be far away in the woods, where no one would find you. Then, you sat against a tree, and cried. And screamed. And swore. You let everything go out.
You felt like you were stabbed directly in your heart. Multiple times. You should've told her. You knew it. But you didn't think she would be that mad... You felt empty, like you lost a part of yourself.
Since you met Max, your life completely changed. You found a reason to live, someone that mattered to you, a family.
And now she was gone.
Max was mad. Really mad. Mad at you, for not telling her you were a werewolf. Mad at herself, for not being here enough for you. Because if you didn't tell her, that meant you didn't trust her. That meant you weren't sure she would react in a good way.
She felt bad now. Because she yelled at you. Because you were scared, and she made your fears come true.
"Shit..."
She bit her nails, thinking she hurt you badly. She would apologise as soon as you got home. Because you would come home.
But you weren't here when the sun went down. She took her coat, and sneaked out of the house, decided to find you. She didn't know where you could be, so she went to the last place she knew you were.
But You weren't there. However, El told her she saw you running in the woods after your fight.
She was afraid something bad happened to you. Maybe you were hurt. Maybe you were in danger. Because of her.
So she ran into the forest, alone, with only one thing in mind: you.
You didn't realize it was that late, as you were lost in your thoughts, eyes red because of how much you cried. What brought you back to reality was her sent, coming from far away, and her voice, calling your name.
You stood up slowly, not believing your senses. She was here..? For you..?
You could hear her footsteps. It was like she was running. But she was so far away from you.. And so alone.. At night.. In the woods..
You started to run in her direction, worried. This was a dangerous place at night. There was a ton of creatures here. And they were hungry.
Thanks to your capacities you found her pretty quickly, and let at a sight of relief seing she was doing okay. As you took a step forward, a branch cracked under your feet, causing her to turn around suddenly.
"S-sorry... I didn't mean to scare yo-"
You could barely finish you sentence because of how tight she was now hugging you.
"I'm so sorry Y/n.. I shouldn't have reacted like that.. I love you.. every part of you.."
You quickly melted into the hug and held her close, relieved and happy that she didn't hate you.
"I should have told you sooner.. I'm sorry.." you murmured, not letting go of her
"No more secrets between us..?" she asked
"No more secrets"
You finally broke the hug, gently taking her hand in yours.
"We shouldn't stay here.. it's dangerous at night"
"Let's go home"
<><><><> ♡ <><><><>
You both arrived safely and immediately went into Max's room, only taking the time to put on your pyjamas before sliding under the covers of her bed. She wrapped her arms around you as you found a confortable position against her.
Neither of you talked much, simply appreciating each other's company in a confortable silence. The redhead was playing with your hair and planting soft kisses on your forehead, while you were whispering sweet nothings to her.
After a little while, you tilted your head up to look at her, only to find her already looking at you.
"Can I be the big spoon this time?" you asked
A smile made its way up to her face.
"Why this question, all of a sudden?"
"You're always the big spoon, I never get to pet you" you pouted
"Oh but I like petting you and kissing your forehead while you sleep.. And I just have to lower my gaze to see your beautiful face.. I'm not ready to lose that privilege, sorry"
She smirked at your reaction, thinking you looked cute.
"Maybe another time, but right now I just want to cuddle for the rest of the night, like we always do.."
"Yeah? Next time then!"
She kissed you lovingly, whispering a "I love you". You smiled, putting yourself back in your previous position, happy that things ended well.
People said wolves are in love with the moon, and that it's why werewolves are forced to transformed when it's full, to cry for a love they would never touch.
You found your moon. And her name was Max Mayfield.

I’m Right Here (Max Mayfield x Fem!Reader)
My first post surgery post! :)
This contains major spoilers for Season 4 of Stranger Things.
Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
Within another heartbeat, (Y/n) (L/n), Max's girlfriend of two years, follows.
Max opens the door to the back of Steve's car, clutching an envelope.
"Max," (Y/n) jogs up the hill to stand beside Max.
"(Y/n), please, just wait in the car," Max says, not being able to bring herself to meet her girlfriend's gaze, knowing that soon, they would no longer be together.
"Max, just wait. Max, please!" Max can hear the grief in her lover's voice and she stops.
"(Y/n), just wait -"
"Just listen to me. Just, please," (Y/n) turns her girlfriend and lifts Max's chin with a finger. "I know something happened back there with your mom," (Y/n) says, her hand falling to brush Max's cheek with a thumb. "Was it Vecna?" she questions, her tone softening.
"I told you, I'm fine," Max replies and (Y/n) meets Max's blue gaze. "Okay? I mean, as fine as someone who's hurtling towards a gruesome death can be."
This time, Max catches the pain that floods into her girlfriend's gentle (E/c) eyes.
"Max," (Y/n) says, her thumb brushing across Max's cheek again, "you know you can talk to me."
"Yeah," Max replies.
"Then why do you keep pushing me away?" (Y/n) questions. "I want to help. I don't want a letter," she shakes the envelope in her non-dominant hand. Her other hand drops to her side. "I'm right here. I'm here. I love you."
Max just stands still, blinking once before she repeats the last three words (Y/n) had spoken.
"I'll be right back," Max turns away from (Y/n), charging over to where Billy Hargrove was buried.
(Y/n), defeated, turns back and grumbles her way back to the car.
. . .
About five minutes pass when Steve finally can't take it anymore. He charges up the hill, to kneel beside Max.
"Max," he shakes her shoulder. Then he sees her eyes, rolled up in the back of her head, the blue of her irises barely showing. "Max! Max! Max!" He repeatedly yells her name, attracting the attention of the other three teenagers hanging by the car.
(Y/n) is the first to charge up the hill, almost tripping over multiple tufts of grass. She skids to a stop on her knees, roughing up and staining her jeans but she doesn't care about that now.
"Max!" (Y/n) shakes her girlfriend's shoulder roughly, hoping to pull her girlfriend out of her living nightmare.
. . .
Max is pinned up against the pillar, vines closing around her neck and pinning her arms and legs to the pillar.
Vecna stands feet away and he takes a few steps closer to her.
Max watches him out of the bottom of her vision, her eyes crossing slightly when he stops - less than a foot in front of her.
Max whimpers, struggling against the bonds to breathe.
. . .
Dustin charges back up the hill with Max's cassette player and all of her tapes.
"What's her favorite song?" Dustin asks, spilling the player and tapes onto the ground.
"Uh," (Y/n) scrambles through the pile, finding the correct tape. She jams it into the player, throws the headphones onto Max's head, and hits play.
. . .
Max's favorite song, Running Up That Hill, begins playing inside of Vecna's mind prison, and Max's eyes fly open.
Max can see that a portal had opened up over Vecna's shoulder and she stares at it, watching as her friends try to wake her.
"Max, wake up!" she hears Dustin yell.
"Max, I'm here!" (Y/n) adds, placing both hands on Max's shoulders and shaking furiously.
"They can't help you, Max," Vecna says, turning back to his victim. "There's a reason you hide from them."
Memories begin flashing in Max's mind - her and (Y/n) dancing at the Sno-Ball, their first kiss, Max teaching (Y/n) how to skate, her and El getting ice cream at the mall.
"You belong here," Vecna says.
"You're not really here," Max growls.
"Oh, but I am, Max," Vecna replies. "I am," he raises a clawed hand above Max's head and lowers it until it almost touches her face.
. . .
Sobs rack (Y/n) as Max rises into the air. "Max! Max!"
Her friends around her also begin screaming Max's name.
. . .
More memories flash before Max's eyes - riding her skateboard around Mike in the gym, trips to the arcade with her friends, scaring the party members on Halloween, cuddling with (Y/n) on the couch.
"I'd be running up that road. Be running up that hill," the lyrics pierce through the fog that had been closing over Max's mind.
"I don't want a letter," (Y/n) shakes the envelope in her non-dominant hand. Her other hand drops to her side. "I'm right here. I'm here. I love you."
Max forces her way through her bonds, stabbing Vecna in the shoulder with a rock.
As the bridge of the song builds, Max charges for the portal.
Vecna stares after the girl, then raising his hand, sending rocks and parts of the house to land in the water.
One lands directly behind Max, and she tips, falling into the water.
Max scrambles to her feet, continuing to sprint for the portal.
. . .
Max's eyes return to normal, and she falls to the ground.
Max pants, her eyes wild, and (Y/n) pulls Max into her arms.
Sobs wrack both girls.
"I've got you. I've got you," (Y/n) whispers, pressing kisses to Max's cheek and hugging her tightly.
"I'm here," Max gasps, grabbing onto (Y/n)'s bicep and running her fingers down (Y/n)'s arm, "I'm right here."
. . .
(Y/n) returns from the bathroom of Mike Wheeler's basement to find that Max had disappeared from the couch they had been sharing for the night.
(Y/n) rushes over to Nancy, who was talking on the walkie with Eddie and taps her shoulder, her eyes gleaming with urgency.
"Hey, Eddie, I'm gonna have to call you back," Nancy says and the two teens run up the stairs, (Y/n) taking them two at a time ad they relax when they find Max at the table.
(Y/n) sits down beside Max at the table. "Hey," she reaches under the table to rest a hand on Max's knee.
Max pulls her headphones down on her neck. "Hey," she says.
Nancy sits down in another chair. "You okay?" she questions.
