I've had this blog for a lil while and want to start posting original content asap but for now I'll try to make an intro post fisrt.
My blog is running on queue untill I gather some material to post. See you soon!
thank you @sleebyshiba for tagging me for the "9 people you'd like to get to know better" tag game :D
Last song: Bahlam Maak by Nagat Al-Saghira, her voice is absolutely stunning and dreamy and this song in particular reminds me of some julio iglesias songs my dad put on when i was younger
Favourite colour: in this season i will say blues of all shades ... but all colors are dear to me in some way like how can there be a singular favorite???
Last movie/TV show: Anatomy of a Fall; i'm a sucker for films that explore tensions within a family and Sandra Hüller's acting impressed me a lot and now i wanna watch her other films :O
Sweet/spicy/savory: savory foods that are sweet, but also i'm the type of person who doesn't like desserts that are too sweet yaknow?
Relationship status: single......
Last thing I searched: scholarships for grad school ;_; pray for me...
Current obsession: resident evil... ive been playing through the main games with a friend and its been so fun to see this series reinvent itself time and time again. i hate capcom but i love claire redfield ... what can i say i contain multitudes...
Last book: The Hired Girl by Laura Amy Schlitz; set in 1911, it's about a young girl who runs away from her abusive family and ends up working as a servant for a Jewish family. it's been a very long time since i've read a book aimed for a younger audience, and i was very taken with how much compassion and care Schlitz wrote the main character and the way she doesn't shy away from writing the tensions that come with the main character's position.
Looking forward to: for the immediate future, getting my enrollment for school squared away and done with!!! but also really looking forward to going to shanghai in march/april. i haven't been back since i was 12 so i'm excited to be able to travel the city as an adult this time around :3

I've briefly gone over one on the main reasons I study Mandarin Chinese in the past, as well as some of my personal study methods, however, this post really goes into a bit more depth about my motivation and reason to study as well as a few more of my main tips and strategies that I use to study and take notes.
gonna start trying to make a little daily update post/journal entry on here so hi heres day 1
cultural anthro got canceled so i scheduled a study abroad meeting during that time. i started my applications for summer 2024!!! i’ll be spending two months somewhere that ill reveal later when its all confirmed (ive wanted to go to this place for years now, my fingers are crossed so hard theyre gonna break). also started planning my spring semester since the course listings came out. spent most of the day on campus and explored the library a bit more, its 11 floors ??? and thats only 1/2 libraries on campus. made plans for my partner to come to campus w me one day to check out our museums and more of the beach/harbor.
currently at the dance studio i intern at, just took a class and am dying. but ! might be able to perform or be part of a project here soon :) gonna try and do some homework or reading while i wait to film for the next class then ill have to lock up and go home.
quick question before i go, can people tell me about their study abroad experiences? like where’d you go, how long, did you have scholarships/price of the program (if youre okay with sharing), etc
Hi there ! I'm an English speaking person trying to learn Chinese (Mandarin)
I'm an absolute beginner and was wondering if anyone who speaks Chinese or is learning it had and resources (eg websites etc) or tips for me ? I don't know anyone in person who speaks Chinese :(
You'll never ever guess who this guy was initially (it's my 2000s spamt concept but i turned it into an oc) so far he's based on and called Mandarin Orange. Not sure what bug he is but probably mosquito (no one ever saw this one coming)
So he's essentially like, Al from toy story 2. He's the type of guy to collect toys (2000s ones exclusively) and keep them in their packaging. However he always get 2 of each pet shop animals, because he wants one for his house and one for his car (glued on the center console, he can't drive without all his many lps bobbing their little heads). You can easily get him to passionately talk about 2000s movies he loves like Treasure Planet. Needless to say he's a big fan of the 2000s. But he has a problem: the 2000s don't really exist in his world, so people think he's a futuristic weirdo. It doesn't help that the dating sim world he lives in consistently objectifies him. Mandarin himself doesn't do anything outside of being passionate about his main interest; but the narrative seems to do what it wants with him due to him being initially programmed as a female character. The result is his animations and camera angles during cutscenes being out of his control, and it often makes him feel like a toy himself, played with in a scenario he doesn't want to be in. He does his best to detach himself from scripted situations and even occasionally ties to glitch out of events- which led him to be disliked by other characters in the game (they never like fruitbugs that play with the game's code). As a result he's kind of a (albeit passionate) loner who lives in a toyshop no one visits. But YOU could change that...
listening is going to be the death of me - trying to listen to chinese without some sort of visual component only results in me completely zoning out and missing everything being said and/or comprehending in the moment and then promptly forgetting what i just heard and/or thinking one word is another because of no context and then completely misunderstanding the sentence

how many languages do you speak? this is so random idk…
It's not that random, don't worry about it <3
And technically I can speak two languages. Chinese and English. But under the Chinese language umbrella, I speak both Cantonese and (though much less fluently) Mandarin/Putonghua. But Cantonese and Putonghua aren't really mutually intelligible? But I don't do linguistics so this is not really my place to speak on that. I also know very very tiny bits of French because I learnt it for a bit but stopped because of the pandemic... (so I probably forgot a lot of it orz so we don't count that)
I’m looking to start learning mandarin but I can’t afford an instructor at the moment.. does anyone have any self learning tips they can share with me? Or anyone willing to help a girl out 😁
