I know a lot of artist are speaking up against the AI thing for very valid art theft reasons.
But I think, as a portrait artist, one of the things that makes me sad is how much the portraits are all “idealized”
Which I get, as someone who grew up fat. There is something intoxicating about seeing your “perfect” self.
Except it’s not perfect. It’s generic. It’s some of the basic lines of your face graphed on to something that looks like everyone else. when you put an AI portrait post next to another of someone with similar coloring, they are suddenly much more clearly a fancy copy/paste.
And to me…IDK. What makes you beautiful isn’t how close you can shove your face to the air brushed golden ratio. It’s dimples and freckles and lash lines and scars that cut interesting chunks into eye brows and noses that define faces and eyes that tilt different directions so you always look like you’re a lil michevious and dawn soft violet bags under your eyes.
For me, I guess, art is about seeing who we are as beautiful, not pasting a generic beautiful on to us. And that’s more complicated but also WAY more fulfilling. Art for me is a way to reprogram from the idea that beauty is ONE thing, big shiny bright eyes and eeriely smooth skin and baby soft mouths on adults and nothing that shows a human is a living experince. Because we only THINK that is the only beautiful because we have been told to find it more beautiful then the delicate shimmer of a stretch mark or the luxurious rich folds of smile lines. In reality, it’s all beautiful, and I am sad that this is using art to push us away from that rather then help us see it.
Leaving you with this piece by oil painter Jenny Saville. her beautiful, delicate and messy skin tones always have called to me, the way you can see all the colors of the rainbow even in the whitest skin tones.
This isn’t a post saying to apperciate the ugly in you. This is a post to question if it’s really ugly at all.
