What is a ‘wug’?
If you’ve been to linguist tumblr (lingblr), you might have stumbled upon this picture of a funny little bird or read the word ‘wug’ somewhere. But what exactly is a ‘wug’ and where does this come from?
The ‘wug’ is an imaginary creature designed for the so-called ‘wug test’ by Jean Berko Gleason. Here’s an illustration from her test:

“Gleason devised the Wug Test as part of her earliest research (1958), which used nonsense words to gauge children's acquisition of morphological rules‍—‌for example, the "default" rule that most English plurals are formed by adding an /s/, /z/ or /ɨz/ sound depending on the final consonant, e.g., hat–hats, eye–eyes, witch–witches. A child is shown simple pictures of a fanciful creature or activity, with a nonsense name, and prompted to complete a statement about it:
This is a WUG. Now there is another one. There are two of them. There are two ________.
Each "target" word was a made-up (but plausible-sounding) pseudoword, so that the child cannot have heard it before. A child who knows that the plural of witch is witches may have heard and memorized that pair, but a child responding that the plural of wug (which the child presumably has never heard) is wugs (/wʌgz/, using the /z/ allomorph since "wug" ends in a voiced consonant) has apparently inferred (perhaps unconsciously) the basic rule for forming plurals.
The Wug Test also includes questions involving verb conjugations, possessives, and other common derivational morphemes such as the agentive -er (e.g. "A man who 'zibs' is a ________?"), and requested explanations of common compound words e.g. "Why is a birthday called a birthday?" Other items included:
This is a dog with QUIRKS on him. He is all covered in QUIRKS. What kind of a dog is he? He is a ________ dog.
This is a man who knows how to SPOW. He is SPOWING. He did the same thing yesterday. What did he do yesterday? Yesterday he ________.
(The expected answers were QUIRKY and SPOWED.)
Gleason's major finding was that even very young children are able to connect suitable endings‍—‌to produce plurals, past tenses, possessives, and other forms‍—‌to nonsense words they have never heard before, implying that they have internalized systematic aspects of the linguistic system which no one has necessarily tried to teach them. However, she also identified an earlier stage at which children can produce such forms for real words, but not yet for nonsense words‍—‌implying that children start by memorizing singular–plural pairs they hear spoken by others, then eventually extract rules and patterns from these examples which they apply to novel words.
The Wug Test was the first experimental proof that young children have extracted generalizable rules from the language around them, rather than simply memorizing words that they have heard, and it was almost immediately adapted for children speaking languages other than English, to bilingual children, and to children (and adults) with various impairments or from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Its conclusions are viewed as essential to the understanding of when and how children reach major language milestones, and its variations and progeny remain in use worldwide for studies on language acquisition. It is "almost universal" for textbooks in psycholinguistics and language acquisition to include assignments calling for the student to carry out a practical variation of the Wug Test paradigm. The ubiquity of discussion of the wug test has led to the wug being used as a mascot of sorts for linguists and linguistics students.”

accommodations i’ve had approved as an autistic college student
helloooo today i finally had a meeting with the disability office and have accommodations after 2 years of being in college without them. im autistic and have cptsd/dissociative issues and had a hard time finding what was even available to me to request for accommodations so i wanted to make a list to help anyone else who might be having trouble.
• Priority registration
i get to register for classes earlier each term to make sure i can create schedules that’ll work for my routine
• Extended time on assignments
self explanatory i think? was also offered extended time on tests or a separate room to take them but testing isnt where i struggle
• Flexible attendance
as long as i email beforehand i dont have to stick as strictly to professors attendance policies
• Alternative formats
if i buy a physical textbook i can request the ebook/pdf/audiobook for free to have multiple methods of studying depending on what works for me on a given day
• Note taking
allowed to audio record class and send to a service called messenger pigeon who will give me a transcript of the class and professional notes based on it
• Access to lecture notes
able to access professors lecture notes prior to class/instruction
• Devices
allowed to have phone/ipad/laptop for social buffering and notes in classes that may have policies against electronics
• Flexible participation
no cold calling, option to work alone for group projects/assignments, not required to present in front of class

Saw a video about how Duolingo works and apparently the weird sentences are made by actual people on purpose, because 1- it's fun, 2- something unusual is easier to remember and 3- even if you're not gonna use "the bear talks with a lawyer" in real life you're probably gonna remember the grammar structure when using actual sentences. So whenever you see a Duolingo phrase that maker you go "WTF?!" Know that someone probably had a lot o fun adding it to the app

learning japanese update: i’ve been practicing writing down sentences and trying to understand the sentence structure. linguistically, japanese and turkish have similarities, so i can say that it’s been going well and i’m having sooo much fun!!

You can find loads of free books on there! I recommend it a lot!

IRODORI is a useful website made by The Japan Foundation. It is a series of 3 textbooks, with audios and materials completely free, focusing on developing skills useful for life in Japan.
Whether you are planning to come to Japan in the future and want to learn what you should be able to do before you arrive, or whether you are already living in Japan and wish to check your Japanese ability and increase the number of things you can do, we sincerely hope that this textbook will help you achieve your goals. - "what is irodori" website page.
The textbooks are super organized, divided in: starter (A1), elementary 1 and elementary 2. Finishing elementary 2 means having an A2 level [At A2 level, you can hold short, basic everyday conversations on familiar topics.]
I recommend styling your learning method with the goal you have in mind. You can understand more about it reading the post I made.

Tip for people using duolingo:
There is a website called duome.eu! On it you can see fun stats about your profile and progress, or even other people's profile and progress! But that is not the point of this post.
On duome, you can see the tips and notes for all courses.
Yes, you heard me right! All tips and notes, all courses! Here's a screenshot with the english and spanish lists, for example:

Why does this matter? Aren't tips and notes useless for most languages???
A: no they are not!
Hypothetical question above is probably from someone who never knew these existed before. See, before duolingo's most recent redesign, you could see (at least on desktop/web) tips and notes on the skill you were working on! These are those!!!! Here's an example with verb aspects from the ukrainian course (with a picture of my cat to squish it down):

How to build a language self-study plan

So I’ve noticed, upon combing through pages and pages of youtube videos and google blogs, that rarely does anyone ever actually tell you what you should be studying. There’s a reason for this ! Everyone is different and at a different level, different motivation. It’s impossible to create a study plan that is perfect for everyone... which is why it can also be agonizing to make one for yourself. 
“How am I supposed to know what’s important to study, if I don’t speak the language?” 
Well that’s a good question! You need to gauge how far you’ve come so far and how far you’d like to get. It’s easiest when you are starting from zero because you can learn the alphabet, numbers, basic phrases, and basic grammar. Easy peasy. You can go cover to cover in a text book. 
Here’s a check-list to create the perfect study plan special to you. 
1. What do I know already? What do I need to work on?
- is it worth starting a textbook, if you feel like you already know half of it? It might be worth completing the given exercises and if you achieve an 80% or higher (or you could give that lesson to someone else) then you can move on from that specific point.
- create a list of the points that you still need to master
2. What do I need to include in a study session?
- naturally there needs to be a focus or a few different focuses of a study session, whether it’s a specific activity or a grammar point. I recommend creating a list of things you want to get done (a.) every day, (b) every week, and (c) every month. These goals must be quantifiable. For example, every week I read two news articles in German. As a reflection, I then write a summary of the event of the article as well as a personal opinion. That’s an easy box to check.
- you need a reflection. It’s important to really take time to reflect on how you feel about the time spent and the materials used. What could you do better next time? What went well? 
3. When is the best time to study? 
- are you more active/focused in the morning or in the night? The key is consistency. If you have a routine, you’re far more likely to adhere to it. I know that my own schedule is highly changeable and that can make it very difficult, but I’ve found if I wake up in the same period of time every morning, brush my teeth, make my bed, and then sit down to my work, I feel far more productive. 
- how much should I study at a time? The recommended period is 25 minutes from the Pomodoro Method with a five minute break. You can research time-management techniques but ultimately it comes down to you. 
4. How do I take notes ?
- IT”S ALL ABOUT YOU! What I do is take messy notes in classes or on my own and then I transcribe the finished page to my Notion page. It gives me a chance to make the notes neater and also to review a little bit. I will say though statistically, you will remember better if you write by hand. 
- I like to have a column on each page for words I didn’t know

How to learn a language the fun (and easy) way:

1 - Watch native films/dramas
This is not only fun, but will also help your ears adjust to the speed and tones of native speakers. You will start to differentiate individual words and sounds. This is not a voice over or language teacher speaking - these are natives who speak rapid-fire, and with lots of slang thrown in. You'll also learn about the country's culture, etiquette rules and general way of life.
Matt vs Japan (YouTube) learnt Japanese through watching anime. You can also learn through native resources like manga. And this is how babies learn naturally - through an endless stream of language input. Eventually they recognise word, intonation and grammar patterns.
For free Korean/Japanese/Chinese dramas check out Viki, or you can find a variety of languages on Netflix, or even YouTube (good for Russian ones!)
2 - Find a translated version of books/films
If you know a book series by heart, find the translated version and go through them slowly. Since you already know the plot, you'll associate new words with their meanings much faster. You can also do this with films you've watched repeatedly, like the Disney classics.
3 - Chat with natives
Use apps like HelloTalk, Tandem or Hilokal to chat (for free!) with native speakers around the world. Honestly, this is the fastest way to learn, especially because they use everyday expressions/slang. It's also the most fun way because you're essentially just making foreign friends.
4 - Browse the internet in your TL
YouTube, twitter, Tumblr, forums, whatever. Google a recipe in Spanish. Check the news in German. Create a YouTube account specifically for Arabic. You can also make Spotify playlists in your TL, and listen to them instead of your usual native ones.
5 - Create content
Compose a song
Keep a diary
Start a blog
Create a YouTube channel
Write a passionate essay
Write a short story
...in your target language.
6 - Latch onto something cultural you love
Fall in love with Russian literature and start wading your way through Crime and Punishment. Get obsessed with Hindi Bollywood movies, or Italian opera, or Japanese anime/manga. Research into your TL country's history in that foreign language. Binge Korean dramas or kpop idol interviews. Anything, as long as you're passionate about it.
