AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: KARIN SLAUGHTER
Why am I choosing Karin Slaughter for this week’s author spotlight?
Compelling, Original Characters – The lead detective in her Will Trent series is functionally dyslexic.
Perfect Pacing – When you pick one of her books up you simply can’t put it down.
Unique/Relevant Cases – Each book has a different case and is told in such a way it is almost impossible to guess the end until you’re there.
Well Researched – The author has taken the time to research her novels and it shows in the level of detail that she provides. This also adds to the realism in the books, making them even more enthralling.
Recommended Reading:
Triptych – First book in the Will Trent Series - When Atlanta police detective Michael Ormewood is called out to a murder scene at the notorious Grady Homes, he finds himself faced with one of the most brutal killings of his career: Aleesha Monroe is found in the stairwell in a pool of her own blood, her body horribly mutilated.
Cop Town - Atlanta, 1974. As a brutal killing and a furious manhunt rock the city, Kate Murphy wonders if her first day on the police force will also be her last. For life is anything but easy in the male-dominated world of the Atlanta Police Department, where even the other female cops have little mercy for the new girl.

Trailer just dropped for the TV adaptation of my favourite book series of all time (the Will Trent books by Karin Slaughter) and I think it looks maybe not good? Like I'm gonna watch it bc I'm interested how they're going to do it (ie from the trailer the first ep at least seems to based on the second book with Will in (I suppose arguably he's not a main character in the first book he's in, Triptych, but then one of the characters in the show is someone that's only in Triptych so I have no idea what we're doing timeline wise???) And I dunno Wills characterisation doesn't feel right, he feels like generic cop show man whereas in the books pretty much everyone he meets comments on how he doesnt act/look like a Fed.
IDK it's impossible for me to be objective about this because Karin Slaughter is my favourite author and Will is one of my favourite written characters, I've read all her books so many times it's never going to live up to what's in my head, but I'm gonna give it a chance.

AUTHOR EXTRAORDINAIRE
Tumblr media
'I am hard-pressed to find a successful writer who doesn't have a similar story to mine - transformation through the public library.'
Tumblr media
'Good crime writing holds up a mirror to the readers and reflects in a darker light the world in which they live.'
Tumblr media
'The plot is very important because writers have to play fair with their readers, but no one would care about the plot if the character work wasn't there. So, basically every book I work on starts with me thinking not just about the bad thing that's going to happen, but how that bad thing is going to ripple through the community, the family of the victim, and the lives of the investigators. I am keenly aware when I'm working that the crimes I am writing about have happened to real people. I take that very seriously.'
Tumblr media
'First and foremost, I want people to have a good read, because I want everything I write to entertain people. There are always different layers to the story, though, so if you want to think about social justice, or sexism or racism or homophobia, or really drill down into why the world is a better place when the police force looks like the people they are policing, then that's there, too.'
Tumblr media
'Reading is not just an escape. It is access to a better way of life.'

Books on the docket!
Tumblr media
‘Lolita’ by Vladimir Nabokov
‘The Virgin Suicides’ by Jefrey Eugenides
‘The Bell Jar’ by Sylvia Plath
‘Triptych: A Will Trent Novel’ by Karin Slaughter
The first book I’m reading and currently on is ‘Lolita’ because it is known as one of the most controversial and misunderstood books to have ever be published. I’m currently on page 20 and I’m already so deeply disturbed, but very very intrigued. As to not spoil anything too much, you can tell Nabokov has an extreme talent for characterization and descriptive storytelling. He writes an acceptable unreliable narrator and he makes it obvious his intention of the book in the first 3 pages of the story. Maybe I’ll make a post about the book to explain more of what I mean later on.
‘The Virgin Suicides’ and ‘The Bell Jar’ are also well known classics that I’m excited to read because it seems that these books are most book lovers stepping stones to becoming better readers.
I have read works by Karin Slaughter before like her book ‘Pretty Girls’ and The Grant County Series, and I was interested in reading the Will Trent series since there was a TV show out now about it. The Grant County Series was definitely a personal favorite of mine and I’m wondering how differently the Will Trent series is gonna be.
Let me know your thoughts and what you’re reading now too!

So I saw an ad for "Will Trent" when I was watching a different show, an went "oh yeah, ok i'll watch an episode of a detective show. my fave." So I did. And I liked it enough to watch the second episode. And went "based on a book series huh? bet." And now I have a pile of books on my coffee table.
The thing is. The thing is see, I'm aromantic (among other things). I have historically *hated* crime/detective series that have to have a romantic subplot thread throughout them as an overarching story (my favorites in this genre are "Columbo" and the original Sherlock Holmes stories so uh. yeah.). I have stopped watching/lost interest in more than one series when the romance started taking center stage.
But.
I got to "Fallen". And. CW for self-harm but, well.....:
"You know, one of the things Angie said to me the other night was that I would never do that for you - never cut myself like that - and I think she's right." There was a sadness in his smile. "Not because I don't care about you, but because you would never put me in that kind of situation. You would never ask me to make that choice."
.....
"Sara felt her mouth open in surprise. She was just as guilty as the rest of them. She had been so desperate for Will to fight for her that it had never occurred to her that Will was waiting for Sara to fight for him."
..............
And like. Listen y'all. I'm gonna be, SO NORMAL about this just SO ABSOLUTELY NORMAL it's fine I'm totally fine.

Will Trent show is okay (it will never be perfect for people that read the books)
BUT
Will raises his voice to often. Like Book Will is quite and rarely let his temper slip. When Will pops off in the books it’s a big deal.
Don’t like that they are making me like Angie and Orewood. Like please don’t
Betty is prefect and I love her.

I'm trying to get back into reading at the moment. I've always been such a prolific reader (averaging over 100 books a year at some points) but I sort of lost it last year. I couldn't finish anything or engage with reading.
Anyway I started doing this thing where I watch an ep of something and then read a chapter of a book, rinse and repeat.
The book I'm currently reading is Karin Slaughter 'Triptych' - it's the first in the Will Trent series. All I can say is, she is blowing my fucking mind with all the twists she is putting in there.
Honestly OMFG!!! Usually I can see a plot twist coming a mile away but this is masterful, like I have serious writer envy here.

I have been taking advantage of the school library and have been reading physical books which I value much more than reading them electronically. I completed so far this month, Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter.
