Sorry if this has been asked before, but are there any panels/comics that reflect/point to Matt's taste in music? I feel like there's maybe one or two, but I don't remember what they'd be... And if you find any, or don't, do you also have any personal headcanons regarding the matter? What do you think he likes listening to? If you're up to answering any of this, that is. I know it's maybe an odd question. Thank you so much if you're able to, and even if you aren't! I love your blog and have an awesome day :D

Hi! It's not an odd question at all, and it's something I really enjoy thinking about and haven't discussed in a while. Matt's taste in music is an aspect of his character that I'd love to see explored more, since it is compelling from both a character/personality angle and a sensory one (much like his food preferences, another woefully under-explored topic). However, it has been touched upon. Notably, we have evidence from multiple runs that Matt is a jazz fan.

Daredevil vol. 3 #5 by Mark Waid, Marcos Martín, Javier Rodriguez, and Joe Caramagna

He and Maya Lopez also go to a jazz club during their day-long first date in Daredevil vol. 2 #11. I love that this is such a consistent detail (having examples from three different volumes is pretty unusual for such a minor piece of trivia), and it makes a lot of sense. The complexities of jazz would likely appeal to him on an intellectual level and, of course, a sensory one.

There is a question I've always had about Matt's food preferences: Would he like foods with complex flavors, because he would be able to appreciate the nuances, or would he find them overwhelming and prefer bland foods? And I feel like this same question can be applied to his taste in music: For someone who can perceive beyond the range of normal human hearing, would the sub-sonics and harmonics of complex chords turn them into discordant mush for Matt? Or would they just sound extra cool to him, making simpler, more straightforward music styles boring? I don't have an answer, obviously, but it's a thought exercise that I enjoy because it's always fun to try to get into Matt's head. With this many creative teams implying the latter, I'm happy to accept it, and I love the idea of Matt being a jazz fan. Jazz is bold and spontaneous, just like him.

Another of my favorite music preference details is this funny moment from the DD/Black Widow era, in which Matt tells some members of San Francisco high society that he's a fan of The Who (I think that he, like Natasha, is having fun at the expense of their snootiness here, but I'm sure he does genuinely like The Who. He also seems to like the Police):

As far as dislikes go, Matt doesn't seem to like disco...though Foggy does.

This may be a topic for a whole other post, but I also wanted to say a little about Matt making his own music, because we have examples of that as well.

Daredevil vol. 2 #9 by David Mack, Joe Quesada, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Richard Isanove

There are a lot of great music details in this story arc, and this scene is one of my favorites because it explores the idea that the experience of listening to/playing music is intensely personal for Matt. You don't need super-hearing to associate specific chords with different emotions-- everyone does that-- but I love how this scene builds on that by drawing connections to Matt's other sense memories and the emotions attached to them. It suggests a visceral, intense experience of music that extends beyond just normal enjoyment. Matt is transported into his past when he plays the piano. (If you take this scene literally, it also could suggest that Matt has some degree of synesthesia, which is also fascinating).

Daredevil vol. 3 #1 by Mark Waid, Marcos Martín, Muntsa Vicente, and Joe Caramagna

This scene is wild and I love it. It's quite long, so I didn't want to stick the whole thing in here, but if anyone hasn't read the issue (What are you doing?! Read it! Now! Go! I'll wait), Matt teaches himself to play the violin within a matter of minutes. The mini-story that this excerpt is from features Matt showing off his hypersenses as he and Foggy travel around Manhattan. Its practical purpose is to introduce new readers to Matt's power-set; in-universe, Matt is doing this to prolong the trip and distract himself, because the destination is the cemetery where his father is buried. I don't think Matt makes a regular habit of playing every instrument he sees-- he's clearly stalling for time here. But he does seem to enjoy it! In any case, I wanted to point this out because it tells us some pretty major things about Matt's abilities. To be clear: this is superhuman. No one learns to play an instrument with any amount of skill this quickly. If they were learning the violin and had extensive viola experience, maybe. (I don't think Matt has viola experience. At least, not 616 Matt.) I'm also going to say that this requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, just like Matt swinging around Spider-Man-style without super-strength does.

With that said, here's what we know: stringed instruments require some coordination. One hand is doing one thing, the other is doing another. Matt is extremely coordinated-- not a problem. The tuning on stringed instruments is delicate. Your fingers need to land in exactly the right spot on the strings, with the right kind of pressure. There's also bow pressure and placement to take into account: putting just enough force and motion on the bow to get the right tone, and shifting the angle just enough to switch cleanly between strings (this is extra tricky on a violin, where the strings are very close together). This is a neat instance in which Matt would be applying both his enhanced hearing and sensitive touch to the situation. Armed with his super-sensitive fingers and proprioception, he is apparently able to figure out the pressure and bow placement issues. Tuning, though? This is solid evidence of Matt having excellent relative pitch. (Personally, I like to think he has perfect pitch as well, though I don't have direct evidence for it.) If anyone is unfamiliar with the distinction, perfect pitch is being able to sing a specific note (say, A#) without any reference point. Relative pitch is hearing A# and then being able to find other notes based on an understanding of the intervals between them. Matt's super-fast violin mastery suggests that he could play a note and then figure out where his other fingers needed to go in order to play the other notes he wanted. If you're playing an instrument you're not used to, especially a stringed instrument, in which the tuning is so tricky, it takes a while to get the hang of this at all, never mind making it sound good. But Matt, hypersensory badass that he is, just casually does it on a subway platform while waiting for the train.

...In any case, my point is that according to this scene, Matt's powers have rendered him superhumanly musical, and I love it. Join a jazz band, Matt.

Alternate Universes: breaking the limits of Canon.

An Alternate Universe is created when fans make changes to key elements of the source material, such as the main plot, setting, tone, or character personalities, roles and motivations. These concepts can evolve into more elaborate plots and create their own canon. AUs are often started by one creator, but some are adopted by the community as well, gaining popularity and different interpretations.

The concept of an Alternate Universe (AU) is prevalent in most fan communities, and Undertale is no exception. In fact, it is one of the more notable elements that both fans and outsiders have pointed out.

For the sake of this survey, and due to the nature of Undertale as a videogame with multiple ends depending on the player’s actions, we have excluded Canon Divergence, which follows canon until a certain point in the story, as a type of AU. The list of Alternate Universes we included in the survey is not exhaustive, and is based mostly on the AUs that have been adopted by a large number of fans, who’ve created their own ideas or “headcanons” to expand on each concept. Some AUs with more specific stories were included due to the popularity observed and their association with other AUs through fan content.

What are the trends of Undertale fans regarding Alternate Universes?

When asked about their engagement with AUs, a total of 2179 people stated that on some level they engage with content that is set in an Alternate Universe. This number represents 82.20% of our sample. Within this group, they seem to be evenly distributed when asked about the frequency they engage with AUs. The biggest group interact both with canon-adjacent content and AUs in an equal amount (813 responses, 30.67%), but are followed closely by those who interact primarily with AUs (718 responses, representing 27.08% of the total sample).

The remaining 17.80% are people who do not engage with or do not know of Alternate Universes in the fandom. Among them, the biggest group are those who do not plan on engaging with AUs (329, 12.41%), but a smaller group who is willing to try them out in the future (128, 4.82%).

We can conclude that Alternate Universes are massively popular among fans, including a significant amount who prefer this content in comparison to canon.

Type of AUs

In this survey, we included a list of 15 Alternate Universes. Most of them are considered community-shared, and some even have different interpretations based on the same (or very similar) concepts, such as Fellswap and Swapfell. Besides that, we included an option for AUs that were created by the person taking the survey, and an option for people who engage with AUs created by other people but not listed.

The top 5 listed AUs, listed with number of votes and percentage in relation to the people who engage with AUs (2179):

1.Underfell (1540 votes, 70.67%)

2.Underswap (1473 votes, 67.60%)

3. Horrortale (1159 votes, 53.19%)

4. Swapfell/Fellswap (967 votes, 44.38%)

5. Errortale (935 votes 42.91%)

According to the Undertale AU Wiki, both Underfell and Underswap had their first post a month after Undertale’s official release, meaning that they have had almost six years to develop. Both AUs are also community-shared which could factor into their popularity. Horrortale on the other hand started as a DeviantArt comic set in the aftermath of a Neutral Ending. The story takes on a darker tone than Undertale, and therefore the themes separate it from the source material. Swapfell and Fellswap are AUs based on similar ideas, which is Swapping a “Fell-ified” Universe or Fell-ifying the characters in Underswap. There are variations of these AUs by different creators, but for the purpose of this survey they were put together. Errortale, on the other hand, started as a tumblr ask blog centered around the character Error!Sans (or just Error, for short), but later includes other characters belonging to different AUs. The nature of this AU involves the existence of a multiverse, which is the reason why many people who like it also interact with other AUs.

Other facts worth mentioning is that the listed AU with the least votes is ALIVE, consisting of 188 votes (8.6%). Its inclusion was done due to its recent publication (May of 2020), and is an outlier. The purpose is to show an AU that is newer in comparison, and is centered around a main character that isn’t as popular as others. 56.3% of all responders interact with AUs we have not listed here, and 36.3% (790 people) have created Alternate Universes of their own. The creativity of the fandom has originated an immense amount of AUs, many of which have large followings of their own.

i know i say this a lot and have said it for years but if i ever fr end up in grad school i’m absolutely writing my thesis on how game mod communities reflect/uphold society’s oppressive beauty standards and the hierarchy of desirability because WHEW CHILE

it’s not that i thought ffxiv would somehow be different lol. cuz honest to dog this is decades of this kind of bullshit i’ve seen at this point, bc literally EVERY video game fandom w a modding community is like this. every single one, it doesn’t matter what the game is. i mean it when i say decades of it too, legitimately this is going back to the mods people were making for like, shareware mac RPGs in the 90s and og baldur’s gate. it just feels like groundhog day to me now and i can’t even be angry with it at this point because i’m numb to the predictability of it all. but i’m legitimately fascinated with it in a trainwreck kind of way from a sociological standpoint because it’s like the collective id of a deeply racist/colorist/(trans)misogynist society is displayed on a giant neon billboard in 256 pt blinking comic sans and none of these people even realize it. that’s the wildest thing like nobody even knows these dots exist much less ever connects them. somehow these same content trends, these same content preferences, keep turning up in community after community year after year. the only thing that changes is the level of technical skill keeps going up commiserate w the evolution in technology and tools available to modders. but like you can absolutely draw a direct line from the questionable portraits of woc ppl were drawing in like, corel paint 1 for baldur’s gate games to some of teh real orientalist lookin shit i’ve seen in the past couple weeks since i switched to the win version and have been downloading stuff.

Welp, I’m Going to Grillby’s: A Fanwork Analysis

Many fan works suppose Grillby set up a new pub (also called Grillby’s) on the Surface after the Pacifist ending. Cross-species patrons and booming business is only possible for monster-run businesses when anti-monster prejudice is low, and there are few reasons (other than prejudice) humans wouldn’t patronize Grillby’s. Therefore, in any work where anti-monster prejudice is fairly low, Grillby’s will always have some degree of popularity among humans. Thus, the success of Grillby’s, and how quickly Grillby’s-related problems are solved, is a useful clue or indicator of anti-monster prejudice levels.

Fan Works

GlitchTale

Camila Cuevas's GlitchTale (specifically Season 2) is very unusual for how quickly Grillby’s becomes very popular, as well as the low prejudice levels and speed of monster integration in general. To be more specific, Grillby’s business (and Muffet's business) is not only patronized by humans, but are explicitly the most popular restaurants in the city, and compete for customers. If Muffet, a spider-like monster who only ran a bake sale before, can have a thriving business, it suggests Grillby’s popularity isn’t a statistical anomaly of a sign of especially good food. That, and the fact the blue bunny NPC still sells Nice Cream, suggests monster food vendors’ success is part of a greater trend. Admittedly, the popularity of Grillby’s could be from the restaurants' very novelty, given the work’s time scale. Yet, the fact so many people are trying out magic food, made by a fire monster and a spider monster within less than a month after monsters’ reappearance, suggests people adjusted to living with monsters very well. Indeed, the time scale of Grillby’s suggests business-folk and lawmakers are also friendly to (or at least indifferent to) monsters, to the point Grillby and Muffet can both start businesses and get food vendor licenses very quickly.

The work’s very fast integration and positive sentiment to monsters would be very unrealistic, were it not for the fact GlitchTale’s world differs so much from Earth. Its socio-political, historical, and geographical details all make for a smooth path for monsters. Indeed, institutions (e.g., The Anti-Monster Department) and knowledge from the first war of humans and monsters even continue to the modern day. The result of all these differences is that monsters are (largely) very comfortable in human society.1

Charakterny Comics

Insanelyadd's Charkaterny comics show a world with slightly greater anti-monster prejudice. The comic has a small plot, set a year after the barrier was broken, in which a kid bought a hot dog from Sans and the kid’s mother “freaked out” and made lots of complaints upon learning it was magic. Due to some legal oversight, magic food apparently isn’t included in a normal food vendor’s license. Therefore, after all these complaints, Sans gets his food vendor’s license revoked for “violations” with the food. Papyrus (now an ambassador) suspects what happened to Sans could also happen to other monster food sellers (e.g., Grillby). While Grillby’s itself is not shown, other monster food vendors signing the petition suggests the success of Grillby’s isn’t unusual. Apparently, a significant number of humans like magic food and/or monster businesses, and they disapprove of the possibility monster businesses can be shut down for serving magic food. The petition is signed, and the plot is quickly resolved.

Undertale: Long Road

(As a fanfiction, Long Road does not have illustrations. The author of this article provided one)

WolvenOne's* Long Road* takes place a year after the barrier broke, and although things are fairly good for monsters, they have to deal with influential groups of anti-monster politicians and a monster-killing mage squad.

As its timespan is much longer than GlitchTale’s, the level of Grillby’s success and species intermixing is more plausible, by real-world rather than fictional standards. In this work, Grillby's explicitly has at least one human employee, who is happy to work there and with monsters. Since magical food “didn’t need to be digested, converted to energy instantly, could heal minor injuries, [...] and never made you fat”, it became popular among humans: “even humans preferred magically prepared foods, at least on the occasions that they could get it.”

The Anomaly

Coffelemental's The Anomaly’s has one of the more complex approaches to human-monster relations, with anti-monster levels varying by time period and region. Unlike most works, The Anomaly is explicitly set in real-world geographical areas, cultures, and time periods, putting more real-life-inspired context to the monsters’ struggles. Although Grillby’s is popular among humans in The Anomaly, there's no indication it's unusually so: it’s normal for a popular bar/restaurant. No other monster food shops are shown, but many monsters have gainful employment in a variety of professions[^2], suggesting being a monster food vendor is feasible. The twelve-year timespan means there has been plenty of time for monsters to integrate into wider human society, but also plenty of time for people to make anti-monster laws.

Deeper Down

Zeragii's Deeper Down treats monsters the worst: monsters were restricted to the forest around Mt. Ebott for weeks in encampments. While The Anomaly’s timeline also started with similar encampments, the actual story is set twelve years after the barrier breaking, when monsters have more rights and societal integration. Though Grillby still makes food in Deeper Down, he does not operate a restaurant: that Grillby's doesn't even exist shows the situation is very bad for monsters.

Conclusions

Based on the five works, one can make certain conclusions about the success and patron composition of Grillby's in a Post-Pacifist setting. (These conclusions ought to be taken with a grain of salt, due to low sample size.)

There is a negative correlation between the success of Grillby's and anti-monster prejudice.As prejudice goes down, the success of Grillby's increases.2

At a certain high prejudice level, Grillby's cannot exist. (No works sampled have Grillby's closing down due to anti-monster prejudice, though.)

If prejudice levels are very low (GlitchTale), Grillby's will receive human patrons very quickly. If prejudice levels are higher (The Anomaly, Long Road), Grillby's will receive human patrons later.3

There can be different prejudice levels among customers, lawmakers, and departments that give out food vendor licenses.

Anti-monster prejudice is still a problem...but the biggest threat isn't from a human. ↩︎

Presumably there's some limit to this. Otherwise, at the point where's no anti-monster prejudice, Grillby's becomes a chain restaurant that takes over the world. Extending that, if the prejudice gets into the negatives, where lots of humans absolutely love monsters, Grilby's would presumably become an international food conglomerate. ↩︎

In the U.S., sushi and Chinese food were once variously viewed as dirty, gross, bizarre or unhealthy (for special reasons), but they're very popular there now. Given how long it took for those foods to become popular on the national level, the time scales for Grillby’s popularity for all of these works is especially impressive. ↩︎

I Created From Fantasies (Exist Solely For You) (MCU canon divergent.) Comic book office AU.
